That was quite the sports weekend from which I am still recovering. To go from the experience of that World Series Game 7 and all of the ups and downs and the inches and the maybes and the possibilities and the improbabilities and take a nice deep breath and then have a memorably exciting Bears game. It's not going to be remembered as an important Bears game, but it's going to be remembered. I. I believe I saw this. The Bears have never won a game in which they've given up that many points.
A
Oh wow, that's exciting. Yeah.
B
Like welcome to the way the NFL is being played right now and having an offensive coach that can win a shootout.
A
Yeah. And it's really difficult to win football games. So to get a win is great no matter how it looks at the. I mean we talked about this already this season, Dan. After it's done, it's either a W or an L and that's all there is to it.
B
However you get there.
A
And this was a W. And if.
B
You want to look at the win expectancy chart on this one. Yeah.
A
Want to make yourself crazy with it, go ahead.
B
Zigzagging. Because we lived it and we certainly know how all of how that graph felt as we were riding that thing up and down. Dan Bernstein, Unfiltered is presented by my bookie and we're going to talk a lot about that Bears game. Also the our experience watching the World Series. I want to talk also about a change in the Heisman odds. The Cubs have three more Gold Glovers, so that's pretty cool. The Bulls got their first loss and we'll finish up with DBU picks. I have a couple things across the world of sports to give you tonight to have a little bit of fun with some of that action. Bears are 5 and 3. They are technically a half game off the lead with the Lions holding the tiebreaker because of the head to head victory correct over them right now. But enjoy it, enjoy the stuff and enjoy games like that and enjoy the the aftermath. But boy, it just Takes a starch out of you. I will say, too. It's been a long time since I have jumped up and screamed at a. Like a. Hell yeah. For what was going on with the Bears game. I. You know what it reminded me of? The Brian Greasy Musin Muhammad touchdown at Philly. That was the one after which Brian Greasy said, oh, yeah, we were. That we were just going by the seat of our pants. I called that play and Ron Turner got all mad and he had. Remember, Greasy had to come out and apologize and say that.
A
Sorry, Coach.
B
Say Ron Turner actually did call that.
A
And he's the best coordinator.
B
Exactly. Do you remember that?
A
Yeah.
B
How ridiculous that was.
A
There's no. There was no scenario. I would have called that.
B
Obviously him.
A
Yeah. I didn't do anything.
B
Yeah. Remember how pissed he was? Just some stupid Bears crap that was going on. But. But to jump up and be like. When you realize that Loveland wasn't down and apparently he realized it, too. To love. It's like, oh, I'm.
A
I'm still up.
B
And then he's aware of the clock, thinking if he keeps going and lands at the two, they lose because they don't have time to clock it at that point.
A
Yeah. We'll have full audio on Ford progress today as we get, you know, deeper into the game itself. But, you know, I was really proud that I was sitting on the edge of the couch closest to the TV with my notepad on the. On the table there, and I had, you know, I had my drinks and I'm watching the game, and I didn't yell, I didn't scream. I didn't get mad if I reacted. I just. I put my. My face into my hands. I shook my head. I went back and I'm like, all right, the Bengals are going to give it up again. Like, don't worry about it. They're going to. You know, and it was. It was. And I'll be honest with you, it was fun to watch Joe Flacco. It was. It was fun to watch him throw the ball. Because watching him throw the ball to Jamar Chase and T. Higgins, really, T. Higgins was a man yesterday. That was just fun to watch. It's fun to watch a guy get the ball and know exactly where he's going to go and to be able to make his first, second, and third reads almost instantaneously and then check it down.
B
Yeah, it's nice to.
A
Also fun to see that.
B
It's not fun to see the lack of an opposing pass rush. I. Let me counter that opinion. I Understand, in a vacuum, you're absolutely right. But when the Bears pass rush is getting stood up and stonewalled at every turn, with rare exception, other than Montez Sweat and Austin Booker, when there's just a couple spasms, don't forget cj gj that's true. Spasms of competence in there. It was immensely frustrating for me to watch how much time your guy, Frankenstein's monster had.
A
He had a lot of time, but again, he's quick, though, getting the ball out because he knows where to go. And this is a guy who's been with this offense now a few weeks, but he knows where to go again. It doesn't hurt to have those guys when you have one in five that you're throwing to right?
B
That.
A
That doesn't hurt. That makes it pretty easy for you. But he still can throw a good ball, makes really good decisions. He knows any kind of pressure. I mean, he's throwing the ball, he's like, no, I don't hit me. Don't hit me. I'm not going to get tackled.
B
Don't worry, I'll go down just right. That's what I'm telling you.
A
When C.J. gardner Johnson sacked him, he's trying to tug him down from his waist and.
B
I'm down, I'm down.
A
I'm good, I'm good.
B
You got me the gentleman's sack at that point.
A
Well, that's like dab in the backyar. All right, I'm good.
B
Okay, you got me. Kids, do your sack dance.
A
You're not bringing me down to the ground.
B
Dad's good in the grasp, as they used to say. You got me.
A
But it was just, it was fun to watch. For me, Dan, it'll be a game that I do remember this season only because it's the Ben Johnson factor season, his first year with Caleb, and it was a game for Common Unguy to remember for the rest of his life. Get gets his start, carries the load for the carries. And it was a guy that, you know, we've been critical of the whole running back room for, you know, the start of the season, it was bad. It was bad. And they've. They've got it together. And, you know, when Ben Johnson said, it's going to take some time for the old line to gel, it's going to take time for these guys to get to understand what we want them to execute. And it was, it was really fun. I felt really good and felt really happy for Kyle Manon Guy, a seventh round pick from Rutgers, to have an impact on this game. And I felt terrible. He didn't score a touchdown, though. But I.
B
And I think I mentioned this too, yesterday. And I apologize if I don't remember some of what I said yesterday.
A
A lot of heavy breathing.
B
I was in a bit of a fog. I was struggling a little bit.
A
And then I realized the open to our postgame show. If you did not watch it was Dan doing this.
B
I'm serious.
A
And I'm like, all right, talk.
B
Yeah, but right, right. I needed to collect myself. You needed the oxygen. And then you know what I realized as part of this whole sports roller coaster? I forgot to eat.
A
Seriously, I didn't eat.
B
And then all of a sudden, so, like, the Bulls game was on. And I'm like, well, the Bulls game starts at six. I better go to the store. So I text Zoe and Beth. I'm like, I'm headed to the grocery store. Please text needs. And Beth texts speed. And Zoe texts w. She's like, huh, didn't get the joke. Like it's a Top Gun reference.
A
No. You Beth do that for my own pleasure.
B
Is. No. She's as big a fan as you. Is she really? Yeah.
A
She feels the need. The need for speed.
B
Yeah. So that was her. I said, grocery beads, and she just said, speed.
A
Love it.
B
But maybe she wanted drugs. That's what I said. I said, you want me to pick up amphetamines for you? I can, like, I don't know if they have that at Mariano's, but I could probably find it in the back. And I don't know if they have the discount.
A
Stay away from those.
B
You think? Yeah. Where the sell by date's getting close.
A
You're looking, sir. Can I help you find something? Where's the. The discount rack of drugs?
B
Yeah. Where's the. Where's the crystal. The crystal meth? It's behind. Yeah, you can go find it there.
A
Oh, another member of the show too, who Crystal meth.
B
So I. I was very happy they won the game so Kyle Manunguy could enjoy his breakout day. Otherwise he would always have that football.
A
Yeah.
B
But he would remember it as a loss and it would have been a.
A
Footnote like you said yesterday. Which. Yeah, I didn't want that for him, but I really wanted him to score.
B
And I hope it's not like other Bears breakout rushing games, because I. Maybe we should do that for forward progress and look at obscure. Like I always go back to the brock forsey game. 100 and some yards against the then Phoenix Cardinals, I think. But. And that was that was the you can't fire Dick Jaron, Brian Baldinger game because Brock Forsey went crazy. And I also. I think it's okay to say this, that the reason why Menungi got the start is because DeAndre Swift has been dealing with this hip groin thing, or a groin. It's DJ Moore with the hip groin thing. And they figured we don't necessarily need our number one running back in this game because anybody can run on the Bengals. It's okay to recognize that it's okay to. For that to be true and also give credit to Manunguy for the game. He did it.
A
Yeah. He's supposed to go out there and avoid the tackles, which the Bengals are happy to provide.
B
Oh, no, they'll. They'll try and then they'll kind of fall. That is a terrible tackling.
A
I mentioned this to you yesterday. Going into that game, 84 missed tackles led the NFL. The second worst team in the NFL had 65 missed tackles. So they're averaging 10 missed tackles a game. That's just. That's that. That.
B
That's.
A
That takes effort.
B
And that's under a new coordinator, isn't it?
A
Yeah, he. He didn't look long for that job, though. They kept showing him on the sideline.
B
Al.
A
Yeah, he didn't look.
B
Al, how are you?
A
Bad.
B
Not good.
A
Guys.
B
Right. I didn't like the cutaway where he was actually packing his suitcase. I think that's kind of a bad look.
A
So I didn't see him packing. I just saw that he had his roller bag next to him.
B
Yeah, at one time he was like putting his toothbrush in his dopp kit and trying to find a. Zip that into the one compartment.
A
Al, we need a play here. Packing.
B
I'm busy. Hey, you know the one guy in your group chat that hits a five leg parlay week one and then you gotta hear about it the rest of the year? You probably still are. We're midway through the season. Well, it can be you. You can be the annoying guy, because my bookie makes it ridiculously easy to get in on the action. That's NFL. That's college ball. That's super contest Survivor pools. All the spreads, the player props and in game lines you could want. And it's all under one roof. I'll give you an example of that when we do our DBU picks with my bookie at the end of this program. If you're new to my bookie, don't forget the code dbu, those three letters for Dan Bernstein. Unfiltered and any bet you choose up to $500 is fully covered. Make your play. If it doesn't hit you get it right back when you opt in using the bet back bonus token. So do that. DBU is the code. No better time to jump in. No better place to play. Football is back. Let's make some money with my bookie. George McCaskey. Yesterday almost had it. He almost had it. He was so close. If you've seen the video the team put out, it is a field level camera shot from like a tunnel. From the tunnel from the vomitory there. Of.
A
I've watched a lot of Bears games from there. The vomitory.
B
Well, but that's what it's called, technically, that there is a. There's a shot. You see George McCaskey's back as he's standing on the field watching the final play, watching the Nishan Wright interception of the worst Hail Mary pass anyone has ever seen. So his fist pump was good. That looked like a genuine sort of athletic enough. It was a. I thought George McCaskey and outstanding grade. If I'm critiquing. There was a kind of a double fist pump there. It was genuine. It was. It didn't look dorky. He didn't look like his late brother Michael. And he had it. So cut the video there. He walks off. There's like a Jordanesque high five, which is not a compliment because Jordan is the worst high fiver of all time. He gives like this weird sort of.
A
He'd rather punch you in the face.
B
Exactly. Kick you in the nards. You are. So then George breaks into a quote, unquote run. That ruined it. You had it, George or editor, leave well enough alone. Yeah, just go with a fist pump. And after he gives like a. Yeah.
A
Woo.
B
And then he gives the high five and fade to black right there. Because then off he goes in this mincing little half run. That ruined it. He had it. Just. Just a little bit of free advice there. Everything looked awesome.
A
All right, I. Now I need to go back and watch because I. I was. I saw the video of it online and I checked out of it after the fist pump.
B
Yeah, it's. It's a fist pump. It's another thing. And then he. As he's coming towards the camera, he's coming toward the camera. He gives like a little high five to somebody there. And then. And then he starts scampering.
A
Okay.
B
He was. He was.
A
That's too bad.
B
All he needed was a basket of flower petals.
A
So if you're looking at his Credibility meter.
B
Right? I mean, nothing is worse than the Michael McCaskey attempt at the fist pump and the barking.
A
Oh, yeah.
B
Woof, woof.
A
That was always. That was very uncomfortable.
B
Yeah. You don't want to be that ever. And you don't want to be Patrick McCaskey singing to the. You know, anyone or, you know, twirling in the Alpine forest or whatever he's doing, like Julie Andrews. So I would say keep that fist bump. Edit out the running. Just advice, that's all.
A
The Bear special teams yesterday almost cost the game when that. What was your. Your feeling? Opening kickoff goes back 98 yards for a touchdown, and the Bears are immediately down to the Bengals 7 to 0.
B
I first thought, gotta be a flag. There's always a flag. I'm like, oh, no flags. Thought to be flagged. Okay. All right. I guess that's real.
A
What did you think?
B
Then I thought shootout.
A
Okay. You did okay?
B
Yeah. I didn't think it was. It was. I didn't have my usual existential dread at that point.
A
Okay.
B
Because I was laughing. I thought it was just kind of funny. Okay.
A
All right.
B
Okay. I guess we got one of these.
A
I got. I clinched a little tighter because I thought right there that the Bears have to score now. Like, you have to score a touchdown. You can't do a field goal. You can't leave, you know, you can't do a three and out to start the game and then be down 70 and give.
B
And they did.
A
Frankenstein's monster, the ball.
B
And they did.
A
Yeah, they did. So that's. That's where I got. I got really tense right away. I'm like, this is not the way I didn't. Maybe I want to start.
B
Maybe I wasn't quite. Because I was. I Woke up at 6 in the morning, and then I kind of got on my phone and I was up for an hour, and then I fell asleep again.
A
Oh, See, I slept late yesterday.
B
And then time change, and you rarely do, so I rarely do. So then I realized I was. Time changed. I'm okay. And I was. I got really. I got anxious because yesterday was my first day with that new microphone.
A
Oh, yeah.
B
I was gonna test it on Saturday, but then I went fishing, and I'm like, oh, shh. I didn't test the mic. And then I got kind of nervous about the mic then. So I got up at 10:30. I'm like, oh, my God. Okay, I've got to test the mic. I've got to work out. I've got to get. I want to get the work out of the way. So I texted you like, we got to make sure we test the mic. And I was all worried because Marcus.
A
Mike test.
B
Yeah, Marcus did all these things in the computer and I. So I was freaking out about that, but everything was okay. By the time the game started, I was still a little fur mished. So I got my computer set up and everything together and I was all right.
A
Yeah. But the Bear special teams. And it was funny that we had highlighted coach Hightower from his Thursday press conference on Fridays, Friday show about the circus. The circus that can be the special teams and about the hurricane play and to come on out and to add another layer of just bad special teams play in this season. 192 yards. Nothing was good from unpunt kick.
B
Except. Except the one punt by Tori Taylor. The 69. I saw 71 and then I saw. It was 69.
A
No, he had, you know. Oh, yeah, we had one amazing punt.
B
The field flipper. Yeah.
A
Oh, that was a good one. Yeah. And I said. And it was on kick return yards. 192 yards. Just not good. Not good. And then the Bears have a hard time just getting any yardage. It seems like every. Every game I watch, guys are returning the ball 25, 30, 30 some yards. The Bears are averaging somewhere around 20 or so or just in the low 20s. But it just. It doesn't look. It doesn't look blocked as well. It looks like it's more. I made a guy miss. This guy didn't do his assignment. And not really blocking. And as much as dumb stuff. Adam Marcelotta said yesterday he made a comment on that opening kickoff where it was a masterclass in blocking and it really, really was. And I don't know if you knew this about the game yesterday, but did you know going into that game that Joe Flacco had a sprained AC joint? I'm not sure if you knew that or not.
B
Did you know that? I need to.
A
Because I didn't know that. But when Adam Archuleta told me that the 45th time in the game, I was like, oh, Joe Flacco has an AC joint spray. Okay.
B
He's not a hundred percent.
A
All right. I didn't know that at all. Except that was being mentioned over and over as well as Adam Marcellotta wanted Caleb to run every single play.
B
I would like to know what the reckoning is regarding the special teams and if there is an acknowledgment of that being unsatisfactory. That's how special teams coaches get fired. It's not always in the immediate aftermath, but that's how you build a case to not work somewhere anymore.
A
I mean, we've had blocked field goals, we've had missed field goals. We've had lots of yards given up.
B
On turns, penalties, and I think onside kick.
A
Oh, that onside kick thing.
B
Come on, man.
A
Unbelievable.
B
Come on, man.
A
First of all, the ball, it's got to go 10 yards unless it hits your foot. What are you wrestling with someone for eight and a half yards deep? What are you doing? Like, that ball cannot hit your foot. Like, it's just. There are, there are, there are plays. You can make mistakes. That is not one of them. The ball needs to travel 10. If it hits you before 10, we need to cover it. You can't let it bounce off your foot and you're dancing with a dude.
B
The significance of that is only the outcome of the game.
A
Right?
B
You win the game if you don't do that.
A
I just, I, I can't. If you had told me the scenario of that game and how it played out, I would have been like, there's no way. It was not going to give up an onside kick and then, and then give up 15 points in 49 seconds to give up the lead. There's no way, like you have a two touchdown lead late in the game.
B
Especially after the called back interception returns. Yeah, like that. See, that made it worse because it kept feeling like first Bayard breaks out and there was the pass interference by McLeod, then Edmonds. So it was like all of these moments, it's like, okay, well, at some point this thing's going to be over and it's still not over. Oh, my God, they're going to lose someone. Oh, my God, they're going to lose.
A
So many firsts in a game. I mean, you had, you had three different occasions where a Bears defender was returning the ball the other direction and it didn't count. Andrew Billings, Bayard and Edmonds. You had four guys attempt to pass, three completed a pass in one game.
B
We'll talk a lot about that.
A
They gave up 15 points in 49 seconds. They lost an onside kick.
B
And let me just. This is also. I don't think I am ever against a trick play. I don't care when or where.
A
Okay?
B
And this is. And maybe I'm going to exonerate Pat Manly for the Garrett Wolf bad fake that he called. But anytime, anywhere, anytime anywhere more, you'd.
A
Be nice to Pat Manley.
B
Oh, I love Patrick. Any trick plays are always fun. Yeah, I'M especially, like, the stakes. And for a coach to just be like. Look at his card and be like, fuck it.
A
Hot potato.
B
That's great. He's doing that in an actual NFL game. He's not playing in television. There's actual people that have to do what he has in his mind. They practice it. He's like, let's do the thing where you flip it to the guy and he throws it to the guy.
A
Yeah. More. They've been practicing Hot potato for a couple weeks now. And I'm telling you, I mean, Ben Johnson is being prepared, knowing that. And he even says it in his. In his press conference about having younger players on the outside edges for the Bengals. Get those younger guys get their eyes on something to be distracted and not. And not follow the quarterback out because there's no one covering the quarterback in man coverage. You get the right coverage. He sees it. He knows it. You make a good pass. You have four guys who attempt passes in one game.
B
Raise your hand if without injuries. Raise your hand.
A
Four guys without injuries are attempting passes.
B
Raise your hand if you sang the Wiggles version of Hot Potato when you knew the name of the play.
A
Did not.
B
Hot potato. Hot Potato. Nothing.
A
No, I did not.
B
I'm so far removed from it and still. Cold spaghetti. Cold spaghetti. Nothing.
A
No, not really.
B
On the mashed banana. Yeah. No mashed banana.
A
I know. Worldwide phenomenon.
B
Potato, potato, potato.
A
No, no, no, I know it. I know it. I just didn't sing it.
B
All right.
A
I did have Wiggles whenever. Never a thing for Abigail.
B
She didn't.
A
She didn't get into the Wiggles as.
B
Much, so I'm live. We got those tickets. That's, like, the hardest ticket at all. State Arena.
A
Yeah.
B
To get Wiggles tickets.
A
Or maybe she loved the Wiggles and I just. I hated them, and so I just. I blanked that out of my mind. I can't remember. I remember watching a lot of dinosaur cartoons when she was young, but I don't recall too many Wiggles and Teletubbies. Oh, man, those were the worst.
B
Try Teletubbies. I remember I was recovering from my knee surgery, and I was only for a couple of days out of my skull on painkillers.
A
And you watch Teletubbies.
B
Teletubbies was right there, man.
A
Okay, well, that sounds about the only way it would.
B
Sunrise, sunset.
A
Yeah.
B
When you are. When you are absolutely stoned to the bejesus belt on opiates, Teletubbies make sense.
A
They speak to you.
B
It doesn't have to. It's Just. You vibe it. It's all.
A
Everything vibes with Teletubbies.
B
Yeah. When you're. When you're full of hydrocodone. Are you. Are you kidding? And I had to get off of that stuff fast. Like the moment. The moment I was down to Advil and whatever. That other one they gave me with the COX2 prostaglandin inhibitor that now they think causes heart attacks or something, but. Yeah, just two days on that. And then I was.
A
I did Vicodin one time when I had separated cartilage in my rib cage. And then I. I stopped doing it because I didn't like. I didn't like. I didn't like the Viking.
B
I only liked it if I took a lot of it. Yeah, like. Like a lot. And then it was great.
A
My prescription's empty, sir. It's been a day.
B
I know. Yeah.
A
Been a rough day.
B
And then there was one night with the Raleigh Bullfrogs when we got into the trainer's bag and we took all of Vicodin.
A
Oh, God.
B
And that was the night I ended up in Muskegon, Michigan. We started in Grand Rapids. I forgot how I ended up in Muskegon.
A
Was this with drinking, too?
B
Oh, yeah.
A
Okay.
B
So drinking Vicodin and opiates.
A
Okay.
B
And I ended up in someone's house in Muskegon, Michigan, with members of the hockey team. No, we ended up somehow with the Muskegon Fury pro hockey team.
A
Oh.
B
And I ended up in, like this. In a bedroom, in a house. It was memorable.
A
Sounds like it.
B
And good tell. And one of the culprits on that trip who was with me is a current NBA coach.
A
Oh, really?
B
Yeah. That was a night. Oh, I would say it was a night to remember, but it's only in these sort of blurry flashes of memory that things may or may not have happened. All right, I'm gonna stop talking about that.
A
Yeah, please do, because I think I'm getting uncomfortable.
B
Yeah, you probably are. Let me remind you that something that's, you know, it's not blurry new windows because they're made of a custom made, low emissivity treated glass with all of this awesome polymer, little expander spacer thingy in it. You know, Russ Armstrong explained all this to me about how awesome my new windows are gonna be when they put them in. You can have the same ones, and they make a huge difference in your heating and cooling bill, because Chicago window guys will come to your house, they'll give you the estimate, they'll make the windows here. In Chicago, that's where the factory is. There's no subcontracted labor. It's all Russ crew. So the same people installing mine are gonna install yours. And you're gonna get the best deal with Russ. Call him 847-302-9171. Check out the five star reviews at ChicagoNowdownGuys. And look, cold weather's coming. So don't wait. You want to make sure that you are doing this with alacrity and just have Russ over and he's not going to try to say like, oh, you got to do every window. Maybe you just want to do the main room where you spend all your time. That's how we did it. You can do it in stages and sometimes you say, hey, let's start here. You're going to have an incredible experience and then you're going to call them again and you're going to say, hey Russ, we got, you know, next time around we're going to do these rooms and these rooms and these rooms and they get it and they're really cool to work with. It couldn't be easier. Chicago window guys, they'll explain to you why all these 50% off or buy one get one free is not what these other big window companies say it is. He's going to give you the best deal and he'll match any price. 847-302-9171 chicagowindowguys.com I'm trying to figure out this Heisman race at the moment. I'm proud to remain a Heisman voter. And all of a sudden Julian sayin or when the announcers say it, it sounds like Julie insane. Julie insane. What happened? Why is Julie insane? What did Julie do? What happened? Is she okay?
A
She deals with men.
B
What can we do for Julie? But Julian is your new odds favorite in most of the betting houses right now at + 175. And Fernando Mendoza of Indiana is second and Ty Simpson of Alabama. Alabama is third, I believe.
A
Correct.
B
So I'm trying to get this.
A
Well, keep going then. Marcel Reed from Texas A and M.
B
I'm not going all the way down to your guy on the five.
A
The top, you mentioned the top five in the Heisman of every race.
B
Pavia. Yes.
A
Is number five right now.
B
Every chance. Okay, don't, don't roll your eyes. The quarterback, he's no arm.
A
He does have an arm. 5 8.
B
Yes.
A
That's the issue. And they got screwed too this. And you know what? Texas is trash.
B
They didn't get Texas is trash.
A
You Want to go in there, they're trash.
B
So the advice that I've always been given and I've had, I've had this vote for what, 20 long time, 20 some years, I think. And whose year is it? Who's the story? It's more than just stats. It's whose year is it? And as far as that sort of narrative idea goes, it's much more Mendoza because of what Indiana is doing. Is that about the coach? Is it about the team? He didn't have the greatest game. But I, I put it this way, like I want a reason to vote for Mendoza just because I think it's a he. Like, that's, that's the story. He's the best player on the team. That is the story of the year. Outside of the bad teams and the firings and everything else, what really isn't being talked about is what Indiana is doing.
A
Right. So how do you, how do you evaluate then.
B
Then. I don't know.
A
As a voter, do you. Do you look at as a guy or as. As a team that wouldn't be where it's at without that guy.
B
That's the whole thing, like valuable and all that. It's not mvp, it' the most valuable college player. It's not the highest paid, it's not the highest draft pick. The one thing I like about the Heisman is some of the ambiguity and some of the way of looking at it. So the answer is, I don't know. I don't know. And we're going to be.
A
It's like a gut thing, just how it feels right. Like this guy feels right for my vote.
B
I think there's some of that. But sometimes regionally it's difficult. And I always go back to the vote that I regret the most. And I don't want to repeat it. I should have voted for Christian McCaffrey and I didn't because I guess I just. I saw highlights and I saw some of the big games, but I didn't see, day in and day out, just what that kid was and that he was. He was the best college football player in the country. And I. To this day, I regret.
A
Who'd you vote for?
B
I think it was. Was it Mark Ingram? It was one of these. I think it was Mark Ingram who just felt like this default Alabama guy. And I don't want to do that again. Last time an Ohio State quarterback won, it was Troy Smith, and that was another year. There was just kind of a. I guess he's the guy.
A
Well, I think if you want to do the right thing and not regret your vote. You know, five, 10 years down the road, you should vote for Diego Pavia.
B
Okay. Noted. Heard. Jeff.
A
Okay. Thank you.
B
Heard. Congratulations to Chicago Cubs Gold Glove winners, plural this year, second baseman Nico Horner, left fielder Ian Happ, and pca, the center fielder. Second time in Cubs history that there's been three Gold Glove winners in the same year. That is the second for Horner, who had 10 runs prevented, 14 outs above average. The first time he's ever led everybody at his position in both of those. That is four in a row for Ian Hap. You're getting to some short lists right now when you're talking about guys who've won. And I know it's. It's. It might be bittersweet for a left fielder because it is the least important defensively of the three outfield positions because of the direction in which the bases are run, but it's the most ever for the Cubs for an outfielder, and it is the second longest streak for any Cub behind only Ryan Sandberg. Wow. Pretty cool for Ian.
A
That's historic.
B
That is pretty cool for him and pca. Get used to this. He led everyone at any position in runs prevented. He had 22. He led all defensive positions individually and outs above average with 24. And of any ball hit his way, that was that. On which he could have made a play. He made 95%. Wow. And that's not just. It's not errors on the other 5%. It's all. It's just ones that he couldn't even. He couldn't get to. So that's pretty incredible. That's pretty spectacular. And you can go into the individual catch probabilities and some of that stuff, but this is exactly what Jed Hoyer wanted to be, is that they wanted to be a defensive team because they assembled a pitching staff that didn't miss enough bats. There were going to be a lot of balls in play. You have to convert as many of them as you can into outs. I'm not sure that it's a model that I would replicate, but they've chosen this path, and that is a validation to have three Gold Glove winners out there. Now, should you say. Should. Can you push this further? Can you do more than win one playoff series? We'll see.
A
Well, it depends who you ask about. About pitching and balls in play, because some guys would prefer to have balls in play and to not have bats, you know, missing the balls. So, you know, he would really want good defensive players because he wants the balls in play.
B
We can talk about this now.
A
We want what. I don't. What are you getting at?
B
I'm just.
A
I was making a general comment.
B
I know. Are we going to do this now?
A
We can talk World Series. I would love to.
B
Okay. That was a. I'm going to miss baseball. For the first time in a long time. I'm really going to miss baseball.
A
I agree with you. This has been one of the most fun playoff runs of anything that I've watched. And I thoroughly enjoyed watching this World Series so much more than I thought I would.
B
It was a fun Cub season all the way through. And I'm really. I'm gonna feel it this year. It's been a long time since I've had to go and maybe. Cause it's. For me. It's also timing up with fishing. I'm losing two things at the same time that I'm gonna have to sublimate. I'm gonna have to find a new hobby for a little while. I'm gonna have to find some sort of other distraction or something else to do. But the idea of coming home to a baseball game, you know, it's. That was great. And going out like that with. With literal inches, the catcher's toe and home plate and the improbabilities of who's hitting these home runs. At least John Smoltz is out of my life for a little while. I'm very happy about that.
A
Yeah, I know his. His commentary did a lot to you. And I really focused on him in game six and game seven. And I wish I hadn't.
B
I'm sorry.
A
No, it didn't. It didn't get me the way it got you. But I have one. One question that I ask of Fox. How can that be your number one team? Like, you're. You're at the pinnacle of the sport, the pinnacle of the broadcasting. It's the world.
B
I couldn't believe he.
A
And that's your number one team. I just. I don't understand it.
B
I. I couldn't believe, like, of everything he said about how you don't want to walk. And then the guy gives up a home run that apparently isn't as bad as a walk. He. Smoltz refuses to understand what a. He. What a home run is and does. He hates home runs. He would much rather see bunting and sequencing and trying to tie together multiple events to score a run than have a ball hit over the fence because that's.
A
That's real baseball to him.
B
He doesn't understand. And swinging softly is better than swinging hard was.
A
I just think because anybody can hit a home run, but not many guys can manufacture runs. It is.
B
It is.
A
It's harder, Dan.
B
Backwards.
A
It's more baseball.
B
It is nonsensical. It's pining for something that isn't true or real, that has been objectively disproven. And I don't understand why. It's like, well, they're just solo home runs, but when you stack them together. Yes, because each one is worth a run. A run.
A
That's how a World Series game seven was won.
B
And then he also doesn't like strikeouts. I don't think he doesn't like. He doesn't like power hitting or power pitching and then saying, this has to be an action ball. He was about a pitcher. This ball has to be put in play.
A
No, you don't want it put in play.
B
No, never, ever, ever. A ball in play is something that happens while you are trying to strike somebody out. It's an unintended consequence. All you're trying to do all the time is miss every bat.
A
Because hand to catcher's glove, swing and miss, that's the ideal outcome.
B
Ideal. You never want contact, ever. If you get it and you happen to miss in an area that generates weak contact or contact on the ground instead of in the air, great. But all you want every single time is a strike.
A
And then we had game seven, had a bench clearing situation. And to see the bullpen guys come running out and the bullpen catcher from Toronto, like, chasing from behind, it was just great. I mean, it. Game seven gave you everything you absolutely wanted. You had starting pitchers coming in left and right. You had a bench clearing situation. You had home runs, extra innings, questionable.
B
Calls, Famers on them. How met, like between Kershaw and Scherzer and Ohtani. Look how many hall of Fame Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, hall of Famers, right?
A
And how crazy that the last six World Series have had someone on the roster named Will Smith. That funny. The last six World Series rosters have had a guy named Will Smith playing in the World Series. And then I want to talk about one specific play, because I know John Schneider bunted a lot and I know how we feel about bunting.
B
I thought he had a bad series.
A
He got out coached, that's for sure. I thought Dave Roberts managed an exceptional game in Game 7. I thought he did an unbelievable job.
B
Well, everything came up Roberts.
A
It sure did. When he puts Pajes in and he makes that. I mean, that play, that mean he shouldn't be making that catch. And the thing is, I think Hernandez might have had that ball, too, which is unbelievable.
B
And he obliterated him.
A
Yes, he did.
B
He.
A
I love that he ran off and then realized, oh, shit, he's still down. He might be hurt, but he got up. I. But I'm. As much as I hate Hernandez, like, what a. What a great effort that was in pies with an unbelievable catch. I do. Not at all. And I know we text and I text and I can say this. I texted you immediately when it happened. When he took Bichette out of the game for a pinch runner. Yeah, I get it. I understand.
B
I said no choice there, but you do.
A
And I just. I hated it. I did not like that decision. It hurt him because it's extra innings. You could possibly have extra innings. It's. It's game seven. Win, win the World Series or lose the World Series. Right now, you don't want that guy's bat out of the lineup. You just a few nights earlier, you played 18 innings. You don't want that guy's bat out of the lineup. And then you get Guerrero with a leadoff double in the 11th, who comes up, the pinch runner who was 1 for 16 in the world Series instead of Boba Shet. I get it. I get that he wasn't running. I understand it. I understand it. But sometimes you just can't go by the playbook. Sometimes you have to go outside of that and think outside of what's the right baseball thing I normally would do. Like I said, I get his decision. You understood it. I just didn't like it. Not in that situation.
B
I'd like to close this little base.
A
And by the way, Boba shot would have gotten the third without having to run anyway.
B
I know.
A
Maybe. And you had the fast guy who still got out at home. I just. I don't like taking one of your best bats out of the game in a win the World Series or lose the World Series game.
B
The best paragraph that I have read about this World Series came from an unlikely place, John Smoltz. And I thought I would put a bookend on it with this. I absolutely love this. And this is a. I want to save this, of all people. This came from the Irish Examiner. And this is Colin Sheridan writing in the Irish examiner after Game seven. And in that pause between pitch and contact, longer than logic, shorter than hope, we remembered why baseball existed long before we judged a sport's value by viral moments and betting apps. It's the romance of failure, the mortal beauty of trying and missing seven times out of 10 and still being considered great. It's the only sport where patience is a weapon and panic the surest death. You cannot simply run out the clock in baseball. You must face it pitch by terrifying pitch until it finally releases you. Colin Sheridan of the Irish Examiner.
A
You know, if there's one meal I usually skip, it is breakfast. Now, I know, Dan, I shouldn't do that, but I'm not usually hungry in the morning and most days I don't have time to put something together. Well, now, this is exciting. I have a new breakfast routine.
B
Daniel.
A
And it all starts with Huel. And they're ready to drink meals. That's H U E L Huel. Each container has 35 grams of protein, 27 vitamins and minerals, and 6 grams of fiber. It's such an easy way for me to start my day. And the best part, they taste amazing. Now Huel Complete Ready to drink meals are gluten free and there are no artificial sweeteners. They are available in strawberry banana, chocolate iced coffee and chocolate peanut butter. And I can't decide which one's my favorite. This morning I had strawberry banana, but I do, I keep reaching for that chocolate peanut butter. It's so good. It's so good. I got them all right back there. All the flavors. Don't touch those.
B
Mine are.
A
Those are mine.
B
Got it.
A
I love them. They're so good. Okay, dude, Sorry. I'm sorry. Was that too aggressive? I'm sorry. I like my Huel drinks.
B
It wasn't aggressive. It was kind of immature.
A
Oh, really?
B
Mine. I don't mind.
A
Oh, that.
B
Don't touch it.
A
That's rich. That's rich. Like the great chocolatey flavor of the Huel ready to drink meal. Huel also helps me with my midday pick me up with their blueberry, apple and peach flavored Daily Greens drink. I'm drinking one right now. What do I have right now? Right now I have the peach and hibiscus. I love it. It's so good. Now, I was blown away by the taste. I was never a guy to go for a green drink. It was never like my thing. But I do love the Huel Daily Greens. They are full of vitamins, minerals, superfoods, electrolytes and antioxidants. They're developed by registered nutritionists and dietitians. B
That's Huell.com DBU the Bulls are no longer undefeated. They fell to the New York Knicks 128 to 116 in the road back end of their back to back. And there's no shame in losing in Madison Square Garden to a team that very likely could win the entire East. And that looked like a different Knicks team with a little more rested legs Friday night. Little more rested legs because man, Carl Anthony Towns also when they're calling the game the way they're calling it or lack thereof, when, when that, that big fella, that's a load, man. When he's shoving people around down there and moving people off their spots. And Brunson is getting back to being Brunson with his 31 points. We had a little regression of the mean on three point defense. If you want to call it three point defense. You want to call some of it just luck that some NBA teams are going to have good shooting nights and bad shooting nights. Bulls had a great shooting night and they still lost because the Knicks were just bombing away. They had Brunson hit four and Anobi was three out of seven. Towns hit both of his Bridges was two for five. Jordan Clarkson three of six. Landry Shamut hit all three of his. Josh Hart even hit one and he can't throw it in the ocean. They had, they just had outstanding shooting. Even a lot of them were contested. Hell, I saw Josh Giddy closed out in the corner with that long arm. He was making an effort. I don't think the Bulls lacked for effort. I thought they lacked for talent. And having to play Isaac Okoro for 21 minutes. I know he's sort of like the Keith Bogans of this team, but I don't need him taking 11 shots. That's too many. They missed IO to sumo tremendously. If you want to, if IO's agent wants to put some tape together and say, you know, see how much he matters in slowing down an opposing lead guard. That's, that's the tape to show him. I, I loved the job that Josh Giddey did, man. He 23 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists, two steals. And he's, he's Learning how to foul hunt a little bit. He's at his best when he's at the free throw line and he only got there a couple times. I'm not blaming officials for anything, but the Bulls just didn't shoot enough free throws in this game. They, it's hard to come back when you're not shooting free throws because it's a great way to score where the clock stopped. And I need get. He did a better job of not getting in the air without an idea of what to do. Tre Jones did that once, by the way, where he jumped up in the air and then he didn't know what to do and then he landed and that's a no good.
A
I'm glad he landed.
B
He landed. He didn't stay right now he landed, but he still had the ball and he didn't do anything with it.
A
That's not good.
B
We need to, I know you're looking for that. And everything's coming off of penetration in this five out set, which is great. There's a lot of that. Sometimes figuring out when to finish, when to draw that foul and when to kick it out for a three. It's going to be a balance in understanding. Do not kick it to Isaac Okoro for the three. We always say, know your personnel, know your own personnel, know that Isaac Okoro is open because the other team wants him open. They want him. That's a defensive win. And Isaac Okoro Corner 3 means the defense has won that possession. Even if it goes in. That's the shot they want every time. So your rotation is going to bring it to him because they're not guarding him as closely. Yeah.
A
Now I don't know how far the Bulls, this Bulls team, the way it's, it's made up, can go in this NBA season. And I've watched more Bulls on the TV this season than I have several years because of, because of you. And that game Friday night. I, I, I'll be honest, I didn't check, I checked in a few times yesterday, but with football going on, I was more tuned in. But that game Friday night, Halloween night, that was a fun game. Yeah. And they, they, they, they really move the ball, they really space really well and there's just a lot of constant hustle and movement and it's not, and I know it's, maybe it's, maybe it is this simple of not having guys that just are black holes when it comes to the ball. And it just, it, it just, if it's, it's more entertaining. It's Just more fun to watch. It's the freaking ball move around and even, even, even vouch. Moving, like moving differently and, and being used differently. It just, it seems like again, I don't, I don't know. I don't watch as much as you do.
B
Yeah, he's going to tire out. I was.
A
But it's, but it's, it's enjoyable to watch. And that, that's not always the case. When I've checked in on NBA games, it's just not. At least Bulls games, I should say. You know, I'll watch some of the premier games, the holiday games, you know, the big matchups. Those are fun with the fun superstars. But Bulls games, lately, it just, it's, it didn't look like this, but it looks like now.
B
You know, what they're also very good at so far is the wearing bright yellow shoes. The second pass, not the. Necessarily the outlet after a rebound, but the one after the outlet. They've got a great sense of how much the ball advanced. I'm sure there's a metric they can show the actual distance of it. But gaining advantage, it's. There's some hockey principles and how that.
A
Translates into points too.
B
Some hockey breakout principles. When you're looking at how the, when they're really getting it out of there and the transition from defense to offense and running the floor, staying in your lanes, creating, putting defenders in conflict. Just, just like in football, that second pass is really mattering. Regardless of who's making it and however they're. They're drawing up, whatever their rules are, they seem to be in decent enough shape because that's the other aspect of this. You can't play this brand of basketball unless you're in superior cardiovascular condition. And that also will tire out a team and make them struggle shooting late when they've been trying to keep up with you playing at this crazy pace. So keep it rolling. I've also one last thing and we're getting into this tomorrow, so looking forward to having a special guest on Organizations Win Championships, which by the way, is doing great back out of the box. Thank you. Thanks to everybody, you know, longtime fans, longtime listeners, for being there. I know it popped up in your RSS feed again. If you're new to OWC covering the Bulls, come hang out with us because we're having a. We're having an absolute blast. Modest Bouzelis has got to learn some acting skill. There were. I counted at least twice yesterday when Karl Anthony Towns flat just shoved him in the back underneath the basket and that happens. And good veteran bigs know how to do that. And usually it's with your hand low and not high. And it's a short travel. It's usually a quick little push right above the ass. Just shove them out of the way. Just learn how to evince that. Give me that big and fall down. That'll get called, but you got to show it.
A
Yeah.
B
You don't have to be a tough guy in that situation. When the guy pushes you out of effective rebounding position and too far under the basket with that little nudge, fall down.
A
One thing I will say about Friday night's game, and maybe it's just me, but that floor hurts my eyes.
B
Yeah. Those NBA cup floors. Yeah.
A
That gray floor. I just, I don't like it. It's not. It's not enjoyable to look at.
B
There's worse.
A
Yeah, it hurts my eyes. Yeah. You know, I watched a lot of.
B
I shouldn't say a lot.
A
I watched several Indiana Fever games because of Caitlin Clark. And that, that floor is just. That's rough. It's really hard. Like if it's not. It's not enjoyable to watch on the screen and it bothers my eyes. Like, don't do it.
B
Just.
A
Just use a regular floor. Like, we don't. You don't need a special floor.
B
If you're waiting for Sunday to start betting, you're missing half the fun and half the money. College football is already well underway with all sorts of exciting stuff and you, you're starting to get a sense of who's good and who's not. And maybe some of these numbers are starting to make a little more sense to you now that we have a large body of work and we're getting into that pre playoff positioning time. And we also know that there's a lot of major programs in complete chaos and that makes things crazier and higher variants. So my bookie is your place to go to take advantage of all of it. You can hit everything you want, game lines, player props, everything you need before the pros even kick off. So when Sunday rolls around, you are already up. My bookie has everything there. It's all under one roof. You can win big on survivor pools or NFL super contests, but everything you like about the college stuff is there. And if you're new to my bookie still, this is still active. Our code, dbu. If you've been waiting to get on this, do it because you set up your account. It's just a few keystrokes. Get your deposit in and you're off and running then any bet you choose. When you opt in using the bet back bonus token with the code dbu, My bookie is where betters win together. Bragging is good. Cashing in is better.
A
I want to pay off my. My bets from my plays from Friday.
B
Okay. Say my DBU picks and mine lost.
A
So I was, I gave you four games, four college games. And I was one point away from either breaking even or winning.
B
Okay.
A
And it was Virginia Tech. They, they, they, they, they got me here.
B
That's why you were mfing Virginia Tech earlier.
A
Yeah.
B
Okay. Okay.
A
When I gave him a new name, a new mascot.
B
Yes, you did. I don't think they're going to adopt that one.
A
I doubt it would make for a good mascot though. You know, college kid in a uniform like that. I, I gave You Virginia Tech +11 against Louisville and they ended up losing. Virginia Tech did 28 to 16. So with the points, we lost 28, 27. But I did give you two winners. Ohio State minus 19 and a half against Penn State. They covered that. Memphis minus 13 and a half at Rice and they covered that as well. And then my vandy pick, they, they finished out even because they lost 34, 31. You were getting three points. Vanderbilt at Texas in a game that didn't. I didn't think it was to get that, that close, but Vanderbilt had an onside kick opportunity that went through two of their players hands and then rolled out of bounds.
B
All I had to do was hit a foot.
A
Oh yeah, we need Hardy there to stop it for him. So I gave you those. So two. Two of the four hit, one didn't and then one one broke even. But my DBU pick for today, Dan, Looking at Monday night Football, just looking at the game itself and I was going back and forth a little, a little bit on this, but with Dallas hosting the Cardinals and the Cowboys averaging 41 points a game at home, we're going to go with Dallas minus three and we're going to take the 53 and a half over. We're going to go over 53 and a half and Dallas minus three. Little something extra to watch. A game that I probably wouldn't want to watch to begin with, but have a little play on it. Dallas - three over 53 and a half. Hosting the Arizona Cardinals.
B
My bookie presents DBU picks and I'M going to go with, with what you're saying regarding some of the high scoring possibility and I'm going to go against the Matt Eberfluss Dallas defense. Marvin Harrison Jr. Has had his issues in his young career. It's been a rocky start, but I'm going to go over 60 and a half receiving yards for Marvin Harrison Jr. Jacoby Brissette has been a more than capable, slightly above replacement level backup to Kyler Murray and I think they can get it into the hands the young receiver. So that's one thing I'm looking at Marvin Harrison Jr over 60.5. The other thing is the Knicks have a quick turnaround against the execrable Washington Wizards. The Knicks are at home against the Wizards. The Wizards are really bad at basketball because they're trying to be and that's fine. They have some prospects and they're, they're, they're rebuilding. I'm going to take Josh Hart to get over three and a half assists. He's not much of a shooter. I think on the second night of a back to back he might log a little bit more time because there's no reason to. Brunson also took a shot to the knee early in the game against the Bulls. Might be a time to see if you can buy him some minutes on the second night of a back to back and just take it easy on him. So maybe Josh Hart will have the ball in his hands. He doesn't want to shoot it. They should get some easy basket opportunities. So by that logic, I'm going to take Josh Hart to have four or more assists in tonight's Knicks game. And those are DBU picks. Lock in your picks now with my bookie. Bet on anything, anywhere, anytime.
A
You know the Vanderbilt Commodores, they play this weekend. They, they host Auburn, Auburn Tigers who also fired their coach. So another, another job opening.
B
I buy Hugh Freeze.
A
Hugh Freeze let go. I think they lost 10 to 3 or 13 to 3 against Kentucky over the weekend. So he got launched yesterday.
B
See, Hugh Freeze isn't like me now that I don't have baseball or fishing. We know what Hughes going to do. He's got the escort services in his phone, right? Wasn't that his thing?
A
I hope so.
B
I hope so now.
A
Yeah, I do.
B
I got to look that up now, make sure I'm not getting sued. Yeah, pretty sure.
A
You know there's a hiring freeze on Hugh.
B
Yeah. Former ole Ms. In 2017 made at least 12 calls dating back to 2014 on his university phone. So you had it right to Numbers linked to erotic services.
A
You sure it's not exotic, like he's looking for pets?
B
It's erotic services. Dialed at least 12 numbers associated with online advertisements for female escorts.
A
You know, sometimes they do massages, though, and stuff, and, like, they help you stretch and.
B
Maybe they just want talks.
A
Yeah.
B
Need somebody to listen.
A
Yeah. I mean, there's other numbers to call if you need someone to talk to. I wouldn't do that. That's probably. Would be more expensive. There's probably free ones you can call if you need a friend to talk to.
B
I don't know. Maybe Hugh has a particular set of.
A
Skills, certain set of fetishes.
B
I don't know. Maybe. But he's got at least something to do with his time.
A
He should maybe take up fishing.
B
Happy to show him.
A
All right. Wow. But I'm glad you were right, though.
B
I am too.
A
Don't have to take that out.
B
I'm more glad than you are. Save you the edit. That will do it for Dan Bernstein. Unfiltered it is. Presented by my bookie.
A
Oh, no. Oh, boy. I hit the wrong button.
B
Dan.
A
Wanna try it again?

This episode dives into the Chicago Bears’ wild 47-42 home win over the Cincinnati Bengals, unpacking everything from the adrenaline swings of the game itself to broader implications for the Bears run game, special teams catastrophe, and defensive struggles. Dan and Matt also touch on the World Series Game 7, Bulls' recent action, college football and Heisman odds, and offer plenty of biting humor and Chicago sports honesty along the way.
“In that pause between pitch and contact, longer than logic, shorter than hope, we remembered why baseball existed long before we judged a sport’s value by viral moments and betting apps…” [41:33]

Dan and Matt’s authenticity makes every moment both entertaining and insightful, especially for fans who crave the full, unvarnished ride.
For die-hard Chicago fans or anyone hungry for sports talk with both edge and heart: this episode is a must-listen.
