I have at some point you you just have to understand when you're watching something special in sports, it's not often. And I do think that there's been amid all the other inflation in our world for years there's been what I would call classic designation inflation. And this ESPN is largely guilty of this. When they started creating things that they would call, they had ESPN Classic and then they would say instant classic in any good game or exciting game or anything with Gus Johnson screaming would be referred to as an instant classic of some kind. And we really did lose sight of the size of certain moments and understanding when things are truly meaningful and truly big and sometimes you know it. And I, I hope you didn't go anywhere last night. I hope. But here's the thing. I'm not going to get mad at you if you, if you turned it off because it's a 29 point lead. Our lives are difficult and complicated and you can get on with what you're doing. I'm not a shamer in that respect. Or the people who want to jump on you on social media for being angry. Angry. And you know, I went back through my texts and some group chats to see last night who was just saying, well, okay, that's it for the Knicks and James Dolan and the whole president thing doomed the Knicks. Okay, go, go ahead. I get it. It's natural. It's normal as fans because those of us who understand likelihoods and you want to do everything you can do about win expectancy and what would have to happen the Knicks to come back. Nobody. He would be the most historic NBA Finals comeback and it's not going to happen. The. The crowd is absolutely silent. You could even understand if people were were heading out into the New York night. But oh my God. Sports did a. Sports. And sometimes you. We can analyze it all we want but, but before we get into all of the what the hell was that? Why did it happen? How did it happen? Can we just celebrate the fact that it happened and that this is what we're all here for, stuff like this. And I don't. I have a strong rooting interest in this at all really. And it's fine. I'm not mad at anybody. I'm not yelling at coaches. I mean, I've got some thoughts on Mitch Johnson being at the wheel of one of the, one of the great chokes because it's not zero sum. And we'll get into that. I'm going to put a pin in that. Sometimes you understand that you're really seeing something special that you're going to talk about for a long time that there are a lot of little kids who are Knicks fans, who are spurs fans who are never, ever, ever, ever in their lives going to forget that game. The star power just adds to it. Seeing the everyone so swept up and it's very easy. And for a long time it's been here. I'm wearing a like a Chicago pride shirt. I'm wearing the Dylan Thomas everything dope comes from Chicago shirt. I didn't even think about that. But you got to give New York. It's due to. You have to. I love Chicago dearly. It ain't New York. And when you have sort of the.

A city that contains that level of energy that is the epicenter of something that we know happened with a capital H man. It's different in the Garden to have that shout out Wu Tang. That. One of the theories going on is as much as James Dolan tried to sabotage his own team's vibes, that somehow that the. The exorcism performed at halftime by Wu Tang Clan. The. And there were people out after that game. There were people sage smudging and doing everything to clear evil spirits and trying to but credit Wu Tang. It is believed that. That they. They came in and changed the energy somehow to allow that to happen and allow the Knicks to take a 31 series lead. A 107, 106 win after being down 29 points. There are some games that you're going to turn on and re watch. However you do that and feel even knowing the outcome, even knowing what actually happened, you're somehow not going to believe it. We. We did this in college. The only the. The game that stands out for me is. Is when Duke beat UNLV in 1991 after being pantsed by them in the national championship game in 1990. And you look it's. And something I always said about that game was the number of ways you can connect an outcome to so many individual points in the game. If this doesn't happen, if this doesn't happen and look at your list from little occurrences. If Victor Wembanyama doesn't miss those free throws. If on the very final play. Have you watched the baseline angle? Have you watched the low level angle? Cat tipped the inbounds pass because Mike Brown decided that he was going to have Cat be the garter of the inbound. It mattered. He tipped it. It threw off the timing of the play. They had their play. They probably had a decent shot, but the ball was tipped. And of course had de' Aaron Fox understood that he didn't need to score, he didn't need to take the ball to the basket. He didn't need to have a shot blocked. He didn't need to give the possession, just pull it back out, get fouled, just dribble, turn around, they win. The moment they're up one, the ball's knocked away at half court. He's racing for the ball. That's it. The game is over. You are now then limiting the number of ways the number of opportunities the Knicks could have to roadmap some kind of improbable victory. They almost disappear at that point. But no takes it to the basket, gets the shot blocked possession change was an unforgettable win in an absolute basketball mecca that was still and I have not been since they did the renovations, but pre renovations it was in covering specifically the Bulls Knicks playoff series there. And I've done play by play for games in that building I mentioned I've actually hit a three pointer in that building because I had to say I did that. There's nothing like it. There's nothing. The swing. The moment you heard the crowd come back in the second half and when I think they cut it to like 19, there was a Brunson 3, there was an Anobi 3 and you're Brunson 3. And then all of a sudden there was a sense in the crowd of all right, one, we'll give you one more shot here. Where everybody was tired of wallowing. Everybody in that building was like, all right, it's a site. There's a lot of basketball left. And basically give us a reason, Nicks. Give us a reason to think anything might kind of be possible. They were waiting and waiting and waiting and sticking around. And because they've had their. However long their. Their Uber ride was there through horrible traffic to get there. Not as bad as the other game, but they. It's as if the crowd is like, just give us something to hang our hat on here. And they did. And it started building. And don't think it didn't get to the Spurs. Victor Wembanyama is going to have a lot of confetti in his hair when all is said and done. There's going to be. There's going to be plenty of rings and plenty of confetti for that young man if he stays healthy. And maybe this year, this series not over by a long shot. This series is very much not over over at 3 1. So I wouldn't. It felt like they won the championship last night, but they're. There's a lot of basketball left and there's going to be a lot of eyes on the basketball that's left because this is. It's just delivering so magnificently that it felt like they won the title and everybody seemed to feel that way. But the moment the. The crowd said, hey, we're going to get behind you. We know it's unlikely, but we're going to get behind you. And then. And then the spurs got a little lazy and the spurs got a little tired. That's the first time with Victor Webignana playing 44 minutes and 44 minutes of. Of wrestling. It's. It was another crew. This was the Zack Zarba crew. So now we've had Scott Foster, we've had Tony Brothers, we've had Curtis Blair, and now we've had Zach Zarba. And every crew settles in a little bit differently. I thought they did a pretty good job, but, boy, are they beating on each other out there. I. You can take that whole thing about NBA basketball and you can stick it. That, that, that whole. Yeah, they don't play defense. You don't play Echo. And I watch games. They didn't do the hand checking grab guys and know these guys have it easy. Okay. All right. Okay. Good luck officiating some of this stuff with the, the sizes and speeds of. Of everybody out there. But it is. I thought Wemby finally, finally started to wear down a little bit late in those 44 minutes, because what. Luke Cornet played four minutes and all he did was run out there and get three fouls. It was just enough for second there. And you know, KELTON JOHNSON Only 18 minutes. I don't think I've quite seen anything like that. And, and somehow Jalen Brunson, who is able to play larger than his height because of his understanding of angles and his ability to make plays with his fingertips and what he can do at the full extension of every bit of length that he's got, which is not much, but he can. He can make his. The very end of his reach still effective. I don't know if that is just hand strength. I don't know if it is just an innate understanding of how to. He uses the. The. The front of the rim to catch some of his layups. He trusts the, the ability of his own ability to put the ball off the glass relatively hard where the ball's going to catch on the front rim because he has to move so fast to beat that. That defensive hand, whoever it is, whether it's Wemby or somebody else that is coming up either on this side of the basket, the other side of the basket. He. He uses every bit of that glass with an under is. And maybe he's. It's. I would like to look at some home road splits. If he knows those rims better than he does some of the road rims. But every time when he gets an angle, if he drops that shoulder and he gets an angle, there is going to be something soft enough up on the rim just the stuff you start to expect, the stuff you start to look for when you're, when you're learning the rhythm of these teams plays and how they're being defended and who's where. Just a remarkable, remarkable game. Any one of those things, any tiny little missed shot, an angle on a screen allowed the Knicks to thread the needle of improbability and come away with a victory for the ages. Already the New York media is trying, trying desperately to find a term, a name, a something for what that is. You know, the shot probably going to be the comeback. But is it in. In New York lore, is that gonna stick? Everybody's fighting with each other, right? Somebody said, I guess Carl Anthony Towns referring to OG Anunoby's put back as the hand of God. Well, you can't have the hand of God game because isn't that Diego Maradona, the, the handball that wasn't called. And you've got an entire nation's self image that was hanging on that. I don't think you can call it the hand of God game. That wasn't luck, by the way, that tipping by Anunoby. That, that's, that's not just arms flailing, batting at the ball, hoping for the best. That's a. The old Runway there where it's like, okay, you're not going to put a body on me. Cool. I'm gonna put this back. And if you. Shades of Lorenzo Charles after Derek Wittenberg missed the long jumper in the 1983 national championship game. And there was, there was low C grabbing the. Realizing he has the basketball and dunking it. Oh, we just won the national championship. Anunoby made that play. That ball didn't find him, as happens in a lot of these situations. He found that ball and look at the people over whom he jumped to get that. You're going to see that forever in NBA highlights and. Yeah, well, it's New York and of course they're going to think it's bigger. No, that's. They're entitled. Everybody's entitled. It was bigger. It was bigger because it was in New York. That's okay to say. There was. There's a lot of net worth that was sitting around that, that court where they went from surrender cobra early on in the game to the. Oh my God. What else do you say? What else do you say? Everybody had the same look on their face like, did we see that? Did we. Did you see Mariska Hargitay who I, I believe she is friendly with OG Anunoby. I don't Know what the story is there. And then you find out that she had done. She's doing a one woman show on Broadway right now. I think she replaced. Was it Daniel Radcliffe in, in this one person show. It's a limited run. She didn't just do one show yesterday, she did two. She apparently did the matinee and then the early evening show and then booked it over. It's not that far from the theater right to the, right to the game. And was there with her buddy OG Anunoby. I thought that was kind of cool. That that's a long day right there. It's sort of like what, what was the, the Lynn Bramer double header back in the day? And that would be. Was it Cubs game, Cubs day game, Nighttime rock concert. Two hours of sleep and then waking up and doing a morning radio show. That's, that's, that's not easy. But I just want to appreciate the fact that sometimes we know when we've seen something in sports that is unrepeatable that we'll never see again and there's more, there's more of these games. The numbers are going to be just staggering. The numbers are going to be ridiculous. Now back to what I mentioned before about it not being zero sum between the positive of a comeback win and the negative of a choke. All of it can be true. All of it. Can it be meaningful where one team did it because the other team let them do it? Both things have to be done. Yeah, that was, I don't, I don't understand why at some point early in the third quarter, Mitch Johnson didn't say, hey, hey, stop taking threes every time. The possession can end in a three. But let's, let's work a little bit of the clock. And then they started doing, they started trying to foul off the ball. Just play, keep playing and keep guarding. The turnovers killed them. They had, I believe, 10 second half turnovers. You knew the shooting numbers were going to come down. You don't have to be a longtime basketball observer to say that's not sustainable. Nobody's going to, you know, shoot 60% from three for a whole game. That's going to come down. It's going to come back to him a little bit. NBA games go like this. They are, they are games of runs. I can't ever quantify what, what a crowd does for a team. Can't do it. You don't. But it sure felt like when, when that crowd engaged, it didn't just energize the Knicks, the Spurs got shaky they weren't. They were uncharacteristically careless with the basketball. They looked like they were tighter in some of their judgments. And what when the spurs optimize what they're doing and, and when that Death Star arms itself, which I don't think it has yet, even if they win the title this year, they're going to need something other than de' Aaron Fox to be their secondary shot creator and or bad shot preventer. That's gotta be Dylan Harper. In their long term plan Harper's their lead guard going forward. Fox is the, is the guy right now because of age and experience and we heard all the cliches last night. Well Harper's not really a rookie. Even though he's 20, he's still 20 and he's still a powerful talented player. But I don't think that he can be trusted at this point to have the. To be pounding a dribble to be able to look at people and say no, not you right now. Nope. Get out of here and do those kinds of things. Those kinds of. It's. We used to call it, you know we used to be a point guard and it used to be your guy who was your point guard and your commander and somebody who could do that for you. A lot of modern teams don't necessarily believe in that but in these situations on a very very young team and it's great to celebrate their youth and young men's game and all but sometimes you just need on the floor because the coach wasn't doing it. I Mitch Johnson was just there doing a lot of clapping and a lot of waving and you know the challenge early changed the game. Got the towns out with those two fouls made and once he got back in the game it's without him they're in real trouble because of his size speed, length slap as our guy would would describe it. As we know the the Chicago Bulls have the the was strength speed, length, athleticism and what was the P was it wasn't personality but it's physicality. You have all these interchangeable pieces. At some point you need somebody there to be able to understand score and situation and dear and Fox is, is quick and good and all that but he was not that guy last night and at one of the most important moments in franchise history to be able to take home court advantage back tie it at two. Now you are on the brink of elimination. As long as long as you want to be until you can get it to the brink of victory and they didn't have it. They didn't have it on the bench. They didn't have it on the floor. That's a choke. Doesn't take anything away from the Knicks because you have to take advantage of a choke. You have to make the shots. You have to. So it's not. They didn't. They didn't win it. The other team lost. It's not zero sum. It's not zero sum. It's all of those things. It's all of those things. So when I heard Johnson say, I don't want to take anything away from our opponent, but I believe that these outcomes, that we decided these outcomes in these games, for better or for worse, that's okay. That's a good message for your team. Doesn't bother me at all. For just to let them. Let them feel ownership and agency in this and say, it's worse for them to tell them, well, there's nothing you could do. The Knicks just came back and beat your ass. It's a better message to say if you do even just each of you did one more positive thing or one less negative thing, that's a win. And this thing is 2. 2. Think about that the next time we go take the floor. But just incredible. Incredible. And now tonight we get the hockey game. That's been great, too. And I don't. And I care even less. So it's almost more fun. I don't really have a strong rooting interest. I just like to say Aho every time Sebastian Aho has the puck. I've also. I'm also learning. I kind of like Ray Ferraro. I hadn't heard a lot of Ray Ferraro. To me, it's just. It's really all always Eddie Olczek in a lot of these big games. I think Ferrari's been really good. I've actually been learning stuff about hockey and about these guys. And Aho. See, now you're going to do it. Now you're going to watch the hockey game. And every time there's Sebastian Aho, I'm not allowed to do it. I have to leave the room where I have to say it to myself because I got in trouble. Every sports fan has an angle. The team you trust, the favorite you want to fade, the player you think is due. That moment you feel coming before everybody else sees it. And you know what? On my bookie, I should have checked the money line down 29. I bet that there's some crazy Knicks fan that is still running around with his pants off drinking champagne right now. A 9pm start Friday for the U.S. soccer team. And I don't. I don't. I'm not really sure for whom I'm rooting in in this turnout. I know I'm not rooting for the United States because that's. That's cheesy. But I'm. I'm always down to pretend to be excited about the World cup because it's big in its sports. And I think I said when the. The Last final that Argentina won, was it Brazil and Argentina in the final? Last time, I forgot who they beat, but it was messy and it was. It was Argentina. And I remember loving watching it. It was great. It was. It was another fantastic sporting event.

Yeah, it's What I will say about a soccer is it's not that hard to be able to trust your eyes. You can see speed and size, and you don't have to know everything about an offside trap or the way they're setting up their set pieces or where the spot is in the wall that you're trying to bend the free kick, who's screening whom on a corner, you can see who's tilting the field, you can see who's got more possession. You can see it's. It's a sport where. And also the games are fast. There's not a lot of commercial breaks. The games move along. It's frustrating to not know exactly how much time is left, but that's just a. That's a quirk of the game. You're gonna have to get used to a lot of the. The flopping and acting and the, oh, my leg fell off. Oh, I'm okay, you know, right now. But we get it. You know, the NBA's got plenty of that, too, so we're getting used to that as the NBA has become sort of international footballized in the way that even my wife said something last night. She's like, oh, so in the NBA, do you have to fall down every time you shoot now? I said, yes, yes, you do. It's mandatory. I shot. I'm sitting down. She's like. She goes, this is weird. She goes, every time somebody shoots, they sit on the floor. It's like they shoot it and they sit down like a children's game.

For me, as far as just the excitement for just anyone here in Chicago, as someone who's not a big soccer player fan at all, I mean, if I wanted to get the best experience or maybe a cool atmosphere, I mean, A.J. hudson's over on Ashland, it's like one of the biggest Soccer.

And I always see people spilling out of there. So it's. And it's just funny to me. Like, I. I was in Madrid the day of the Real Madrid FC Barcelona game, and when. When you. When a major international city and they tell you it, like, it shuts down, it shuts down. It's. It's. No one's do. Everyone in the city is watching the game. Everywhere. You can't get a cab. All the cabs are parked on top of each other in a giant pile near all the bars. That's just you. You. It's like, where's the cab? And the. The bellman at the hotel is like, laughing at it. He goes, oh, you're not. The Madrid Barcelona game. You're not getting. You're not going anywhere. You're not doing anything right now. Wait till the game is over.

Was it Luis Figo? Was he on the. As I remember, we. It was. It was great. I was having, you know, you know, wine and almonds and olives, and then we got these awesome, like, sauteed fish croquettes that we were dipping in like a Romescu. Whatever. Oh, my God, it was incredible. And. And, you know, I didn't care about the game just like this. I'm just. I'm just gonna enjoy. But yeah, every time they show a commercial for. With a World cup, something, this is when I need a rack powing. I need, like, I know who Beckham is and that I got. But he Iraq pose himself. He goes like, he gets the cup. And he's like, oh, it's me. I got the cup with me on it. I'm. I'm David Beckham. I was a famous soccer player, okay? But I say I need that. You. You got to tell me who the Ronaldo's. And Ronaldinho. Ronaldinho is the ugly guy, right? He's the guy whose face looks like a Picasso.

And then there's. But there's Ronaldinho, who is the Brazilian, like, dribbling futsal star. And I don't know. I can't just look at somebody's face and know who they are. You know, like Paul Pogba or Pogba or something. Maybe Messi. Yeah, yeah, I know. I know. Lionel Messi. Yeah. Yes, I can see. But. But I'm just. I don't know if I. I'm feeling it yet. I will. And I'm. I'm looking forward to it. We don't have to get up at weird times. Mm. Because the games are here, but this country. I heard a survey this morning, something like 60% of American adults say they're. They're not interested and. Or more than like, the people actually did some polling of interest numbers, and I don't know, maybe part of it is just internationally, everything feels heavy because everything becomes one of these incredibly tiresome, exhausting proxies for reductive bot screaming wherever you go and just all the same, just stupid.

Well, no, because the World Baseball Classic, the US Contributed to that by being dicks and they just. They made that awful because they embraced that. And then I had to. I, I showed my girlfriend and then she was like, you do realize this is AI. And then I look back at it and I scrolled down. It was just like it. The account wasn't very old and it was, it was just Spider man stuff. And it, it had all these pictures of him with like other actors. Actors or actresses from other Spider man movies. And it was, you know, something nostalgic. That gets people like me and they got you. They got me. Yeah. But the algorithm knows me. The algorithm knows that I'm excited about the, the next Spider man movie. So. Yeah, you're an easy mark. Yeah, I'm an easy mark on that one.

My wife, Allie and I founded the Safe at home foundation in 2002. And their foundation is.
