Dan Bernstein, unfiltered.
B
Unfiltered on three.
A
One, two, sports.
B
What are they doing here now? The answer is whatever the hell we want. We figured there was a lot going on yesterday. There's going to be a lot going on today, so we are bringing you a bonus. Dan Bernstein, unfiltered here on 312Sports, brought to you in partnership with my bookie. I'm Dan Bernstein, and that is Matt Abaticola, author of A Win Yesterday for the Libertyville Wildcats. Congratulations on that. To start everything off.
A
Thank you. Yeah, it was. It was a fun day. But, buddy, I've got some. I got some stories for you about some insects. I have insect stories in my life.
B
Not insist. Okay. Insects, not incest. Okay.
A
Insects, buddy. So I text you yesterday that I had my first bee sting in my entire life.
B
Yeah.
A
Okay. What I didn't tell you, though, was the good part of the story. So Libertyville High School had their homecoming dance last night. Homecoming game Friday night. They beat Mundelein 177 on Saturday morning. There's always a homecoming parade, and the youth football program gets invited to walk in the parade and be a part of it. So I've done it the previous three years as a head coach. I walk with the kids. So yesterday I'm walking and the kids get to toss out candy because a big majority of the community comes out to line the streets and watch the parade. And so I have a sucker that one of the kids was handing out, and I'm eating a sucker, talking to one of their coaches as we're walking down the streets and the suckers is down at my hand, you know, and.
B
I'm gonna be in your mouth.
A
Did you b. Lands on the sucker? I didn't know. Put it in my mouth. The thing stung my tongue.
B
Okay, first of all, was it a B or was. It's probably a yellow jacket.
A
I have no idea what it was.
B
It's very unlikely that it was a B.
A
Something that stung me on my tongue. My first ever in my life, pal, and it's on my tongue.
B
That's brutal.
A
It was awful. I had. The good news is yesterday, the only.
B
Good thing about getting stung there is mouth stuff heals faster. Lips and tongue and gums. It tends to heal because of the blood flow.
A
Yeah.
B
So you're gonna go through the healing cycle quicker there than if it was like, on your finger or toe.
A
Oh, I feel completely. I mean, I feel completely normal today. My tongue feels normal. Everything's fine. Yesterday, though, not so much. I mean, we took a visit to the immediate care as well, because I just, I was not feeling well.
B
You don't know if you're allergic, right?
A
I have no idea.
B
Yeah.
A
So I go, you know, I start with Benad with the Benadryl, which about made me want to fall asleep. And then I'm like, am I sleepy because something bad is happening or am I sleepy because of the Benadryl? So we go to the doctor and I get a steroid prescription and a prescription for an EpiPen because the doctor's like, hey, in case, you know, this reaction continues, like 72 hour window is what we're looking at for your first time. I feel completely fine today.
B
Good.
A
First sting ever in my life. It's on my tongue.
B
But it's possible because we're in a 72 hour window. Nobody should miss a minute of either DBU or forward progress because you could swell up like a pin cushion and any point.
A
Right, Right on camera. Absolutely. So I told. So we had the game yesterday afternoon. So this is after the bee sting. I told the guy who runs our program and the trainer, I'm like, hey, here's what happened to me today. If I just collapse on the sidelines. Here's the reason why.
B
So if you were a real coach. If you're a real coach. And first of all, by the way, pull your camera down a little bit so we're evened out a little bit there. That's so much.
A
Oh, yeah, I have my stuff messed up. My moved around.
B
Sorry. Yeah. Thank you.
A
There we go.
B
So I think a real coach would have said, kids, I don't know if I'm going to make it. This could be it for me. If you ever, ever had needed to have the game of your life. For everything I've done for you, I don't know if I'm going to survive. But this, you've got to do it for me. Do it for my memory. Because I don't. I don't think I'm going to last.
A
You know, it's funny you say that. Natalie's told me a story and I don't even remember where it was up here in this part of the state. But a coach did like a self inflicted gun wound prior to a game to inspire the kids. If I have that story correct, I'll have to double check with her and ask her, but yeah, I think that sounds right about.
B
Wait, fake or real?
A
Like a real, like self inflicted kind of real gunshot wound in the head. Right in the mouth. Kids.
B
I might not make it.
A
All right, so Listen to this now. So we're sitting here. We've had. And we've been in this house over three years and have never dealt with any stink bugs.
B
Oh, they're fun.
A
So right now we're kind of being overrun with stink bugs for some reason, obviously. Time of the year, end of summer, beginning of fall. I guess they come inside to seek. To seek shelter.
B
Yep.
A
So yesterday we're sitting on the couch, and there's, like, four of them climbing up the chimney. I noticed it, like, on the. On the chimney. And I'm like, what the hell is going on? There's no windows. There's no doors that are an issue. So I'm like, all right, I know the flu's closed, but they're getting in through the chimney somehow. So I take care of the four that I see. We see two more. And so I'm like, all right, here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna light this puppy up.
B
Oh, no.
A
So I turn the fireplace on, and the second I turn it on and the flames shoot up. About two dozen fell from, like, with. It's inside the chimney onto the chimney floor.
B
Well, it worked.
A
And then it's just like, snap, crackle, pop. And then there's a little bit of a smell. And then there's this more, and then there's more, and then there's more.
B
Leave it on for a while.
A
Yeah, we left it on for a little bit yesterday.
B
Okay. As long as there's not, like, possums or birds in there.
A
Raccoons and stuff. Yeah, no, but that was my. My day yesterday with. With insects.
B
Awesome. Well, you know what I did yesterday is. Is I got up and it started watching Illinois and usc, and I was kind of puttering around, and, like, you know what? So Beth was working all day, and I text her and I said, hey, I have to go see One Battle after Another.
A
Okay.
B
Would you be mad if I saw it without you? She said, no. I had the theater almost entirely to myself. I had my favorite seat in the very back row, right in the middle. There were maybe seven other people in the theater for a 12:15 matinee.
A
Okay.
B
And I'm going to withhold my review for tomorrow.
A
Okay. For tomorrow. Because we saw it last night at 7:15, so.
B
And then I get. So later in the night, I get a call from my dad. He's like, hey, your mom and I just saw One Battle after another. We're leaving the theater right now. There's so much stuff I gotta talk about. This movie is so I've just. It was all right, we'll save it for tomorrow because there's basically my entire day.
A
I tried to view it through a Dan Bernstein lens as well too. Not, you know, like taking a movie. But there was, there was things I was trying to just pick up on. Things I normally wouldn't focus on in the movie. So yeah, we'll save it for tomorrow. Save it for tomorrow. So I thought it'd be great to get together and just. And just hang out this morning. We have a bunch of people already online with us. Some not so well wishers and some well wishers about my incident with.
B
Why are you making me turn you on to the warning? I hate you. I hate doing this on purpose. It's the funniest.
A
You know. And here it is.
B
You guys are awful. I went out of my way to sit in front of a computer and watch you because you suck.
A
That's fine. And thanks for being here. We do appreciate that. It's. It's the final day.
B
I get it a little bit in radio. A little bit in radio. I understand. It's like.
A
Because there's no choice. Yeah.
B
And it's there and it's on. But if you. But for podcasting, you have to make the decision to tune it in. That's on you, bro.
A
That's correct.
B
If you hate it that you. That's a you problem.
A
So I thought it'd be fun just to get together quick here and have a little Sunday morning live session. With the final day of Major League Baseball taking place today, all the games starting today between 105 and 120 Central Time. So everyone plays all together. Know how, how things are going to. Are going to really break down. Especially in the American League. A lot more to figure out. Their National League still has one team to figure out who's going to make that that final spot in the wild card. There's an NFL game going on right now. The Steelers are taking it to Minnesota. It's 14 to 3. Late in the second quarter there was a touchdown called back on a fumble return for the Steelers. So there was. I mean Minnesota does not look good at all. And the Steelers defense, fumble recovery and interception. DK Metcalf had the longest touchdown run in NFL Europe history. He's just a beast. So lots of good stuff there to watch for.
B
For Vikings and Steelers actually doing something called NFL in Europe history.
A
Well, that's what. So when the. I can't remember who's doing it with Greg Olson the play by play this morning on NFL Network. But he said that the DK Metcalf touchdown reception was the longest in NFL Europe history.
B
Okay, but. Nope, they gotta stop.
A
I didn't say that. I didn't, I don't.
B
That's what, our brains are fried enough that the last thing we need is to keep track of records of games played there rather than here. Either they count as regular NFL games and they're regular NFL games.
A
Okay, that's okay, because I, I started a website about NFL stats, about NFL Europe stats, and I have your name on it. So I'll, I'll go. Great. I, I'll change that. Sorry about, I just thought you for sure you'd want to get in on it.
B
Thanks so much.
A
Have a spot.
B
Watching the college football was fun yesterday. I, I, I think I'm done with Garrett Nussmeier for a while as a Heisman candidate. I don't get it. I know that the LSU quarterback for a while was looked at. Well, it's Doug Nussmeier's son. And boy, if you're, if you're Doug Nussmeier's son, you better be good. I, I don't see it, but I'm not quite sure. I'll tell you the other guy, that Trinidad Chambliss, that when he started against Tulane, and I knew he was the backup and I thought, well, if this guy's the backup, how good is their starter? This guy's better. And this guy is their new starter. So say, remember that name. Remember the name Trinidad Chambliss for a while because you're going to be hearing it. Your guy, Diego Pavia is, is, is rising like a rocket up the odds, as he should because of a yet another spectacular performance. How tall is he really, by the way? Because he's listed at 6ft, I would.
A
Say maybe at most, if he's lucky, five, ten.
B
That's what I thought at, at most.
A
And that, that might be a stretch, too. Stretch. Get a bear. He could be 5, 8 or 5, 9.
B
Also, I watched last night's Penn State game and the, they kept to the white out, the white out, the white out. And I don't like the fact that Oregon chose those uniforms because you had all of these neutral colors out there. When I'm so used to making it easy to know when I glance at the TV when I'm up cooking and looking back, that it's, that it's Oregon. But I'll tell you something, that young man is a pro prospect.
A
Oh, for sure, for sure. And you know what? If you beat Penn State at Penn State, I don't care if you're out there naked, I don't care what uniform you wear. Just go out and beat Penn State anytime. That makes. Always makes me happy.
B
Oh, it was. And I thought it was over. I was with Dan Lanning because I thought that thing was well over when they went up 14 late. But then things get weird in college football, as they always do. And just watching Dante Moore is a freshman and he's got some moves, man. He's, he's got some, you know, change the throwing platform a little bit. He's got a great frame to him. So keep an eye, keep an eye on, on what that young man is doing. Are you allowed to, to enter the draft after freshman year? You're not, right?
A
You're not.
B
Okay.
A
It's a minimum two, isn't it?
B
Yeah. I didn't know if they changed that.
A
Maybe. Who knows? Maybe they did. I mean, rules are changing in college football all the time, so.
B
But yeah, there's nothing. There's something like 100,000 Penn State fans miserable. Yeah.
A
Yeah, that's a, that's a great day. Yeah, that's a really good day. And then I loved. I was hearing a lot of the commentary prior to yesterday's Ohio State at Washington game and how Washington really was going to show like, is Ohio State for real? That was, that was a narrative I kept hearing no matter where I was getting in information. Like, are they really for real? Are they really for real? Going to Washington is going to be, is going to be really hard to play. It's a hard place to go and play. They kicked their ass. Wasn't even close. So it was, that was, that was interesting to hear about the number one team, ranked number one team. If they're, if they're for real.
B
That'S just so badly ridiculous. And the other one is, is Alabama back right under Kalyn DeBoer? Are they back?
A
Are they back? Yeah, because they had a, they had a nice, nice win yesterday at, at Georgia, obviously. 24, 21 win over number five Georgia. Yeah. My guy, though, Diego Pavia. 26 of 34 yesterday. Dan. 321 yards, five touchdowns, one interception. And that, that I put on the receiver that's not on him. He also had nine carries, 79 yards for a touchdown in Vanderbilt's 55 to 35 win over Utah State. Still too many points on defense, but it's fine. I mean, they're putting up so many. That's 125 points in the last two.
B
Weekends for Vanderbilt, 125 points and two. Okay. And then their conference schedule is going to tell the tale.
A
Yeah. I mean, their SEC team, they'll start playing those. You know, they already took down the South Carolina Gamecocks. Although we saw on ESPN's website it was South Carolina.
B
Yes.
A
Not Carolina. Yeah. But anyway, yeah, that schedule is going to change. And then. Yeah, you started watching Illinois. They got the win yesterday. What else happened?
B
I started watching Illinois until I could be. Feel. I could somehow feel the projection of that movie, like, in the air. Like, I felt like I was missing out. Like it was live somewhere. And based on some recommendations that I got from people I trust who said, see this movie as soon as you can see it as soon as you can see it as soon as you can. Like, I don't know, the trailers make it look bad. It doesn't look like Paul Thomas Anderson. I don't know. It's like, fine. I, I'm gonna, I'm just gonna go and I will tell you all about my experience.
A
Yeah, I can't wait. I can't wait to hear because. Yeah, I have lots, lots of thoughts on it as well, too. And just to answer this question to our commenters, that there will be a post game today after Bears Raiders, we'll do a forward progress post game show, right?
B
Not this show, right?
A
Forward progress.
B
Correct. Forward progress. The all Bears show that we do. And there were a lot of people responding to the, to various Raiders that we had when we did our 10, our top 10 Raiders of all time. And so I was on the phone with my son and a couple of his friends, one of whom, one of his roommates is a huge Raiders fan. And I said, you know, on our show, we did, we did the top 10 Raiders of all times. Like, yeah, who's on your list? Like, I guarantee you, you forgot some because I know all about the Raider. I said, okay, well, just. And I texted the link to the show and I hear. And I said, I just want you. You can object to anything. I just. He didn't know what he was getting into.
A
No.
B
So, okay, Mr. Raider, Mr. Biggest Raiders Fan of all Time. You listen to our top 10 and honorable mentions, you tell us we missed anybody.
A
Well, if he's Jason's Buddy, he's probably 20, 21, 22. He probably thinks we're complete idiots. And I get. He. I would say he bailed after two or three minutes.
B
Well, yes, I would hope so. I don't know if he did or not. He probably didn't well, you know how you send something to a 20 year old and they say, please watch this. And they say okay. And then a week later. Did you watch that? No. That's my experience.
A
That's cute that you even ask, right? That's cute. Yeah.
B
Did you. Do you remember that video I sent you? No. Well, go look. Go scroll. Oh yeah.
A
Did you watch it, send it and then assume he's never going to watch it? Don't even know. Bother asking.
B
Right. If I do get something back, if I do get a note back that he actually washed it, it's generally a surprise. But we did have the Cubs go out of their way to put an exclamation point on their season. It's so funny that the Cubs ended up exactly where they were predicted, right around where they 91 wins, 92 wins. This is exactly from day one. Whether it was Zips or Joe Sheehan or any of the the algorithms said, okay, this looks like about a 90 win team that should make the playoffs. And and through all of the silliness and all the roller coaster to get another reason don't ride the roller coaster. Look at larger trends and roll with it and you'll get where you should be. And they did. I do think it was an outstanding job of managing within all that by Craig Counsel, never really knowing what his circle of trust in the bullpen was going to be from. From even today, which is pretty especially.
A
I mean after losing your, you know, one and two starters. You're one for the year and showed up, goes and misses a couple months. But he's come back, had a rough outing, his last outing, but lots of fun stuff in Major League Baseball today. The Blue Jays Dan can clinch the AL east and the als, number one seed with a win or loss by the Yankees. So that's up for grabs. The Yankees can clinch the AL east and the AL's number one seed with a win and a loss by the Blue Jays. Guardians can clinch the AL Central with a win or loss by the Tigers. The Tigers can clinch the AL Central with a win and a loss by the Guardians. And the Reds and Mets are fighting for their playoff lives. And the Reds can clinch with a win or a Mets loss. The Mets need a win and the Reds to lose. So the Mets are the furthest team out.
B
Correct. They lose the tiebreaker. Now. The Astros limped out of this thing.
A
They're done.
B
I also found it hilarious. What it There were two things depending on how baseball or how generally literate one may be. There were two things that the end of the Guardians game brought to mind when they clinch on a basis loaded hit by pitch.
A
Oh, that was worse. I saw that. A walk off. A walk off win with a hit by pitch did that.
B
What? Okay, so what. What do you think of when you. When that happens?
A
What do I think of?
B
There's the Simpsons episode. Oh, right. Wasn't. Wasn't. Wasn't a hit by pitch that allowed Mr. Burns's the power Plant softball team to win. If I remember correct.
A
One of our. One of our commenters will know.
B
And the other one, for those of us who have read the book the Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach, very similarly, I believe it's Henry Scrimshander who, when he makes his comeback, is similarly hit by a pitch to win the big game at the end. So those are the two things I thought.
A
You thought of. Yeah, that's good. I mean, and if you haven't read.
B
The Art of Fielding, what's wrong with you? You should read it. One of. One of the.
A
Well, I'm still working the art of the deal.
B
How's that going for you?
A
Oh, my God. So good. I mean, I'm. I'm close to bankrupting my third business, so I'm doing really well. I. Is that really. Is that the worst case scenario you could think of as a pitcher? Like a bases loaded walk off hit by pitch?
B
No bases loaded. Bach.
A
Oh, okay. Bach.
B
At least the ball got out of your hand.
A
Okay, that's a good point. That's a good point. Yeah. Okay. All right, I'll give you that one. That's a. That's a good one.
B
But that's pretty. I'm just. I'm happy that the Tigers found their way in one way or another. That it's not a complete collab. It's still.
A
They're in.
B
It's still a pretty hellacious collapse, but they're in. And the Cubs have themselves home field advantage. It hasn't really helped in the wild card series, though. Home field advantage has. Not mathematically yet, historically, and maybe leaving out over time, it hasn't shown to really matter.
A
No, it hasn't. And what's locked in right now is the brewers of the number one seed. They have the home field throughout the playoffs, including the World Series, if they make it. Now, listen to this, Dan. They've earned their. They earned the first playoff spot of all Major League Baseball teams this year for the second consecutive season. So they were the first team in this year. They were the first team in last year while winning The NL Central for their third straight season as well. So they host the winner of the Cubs Padres series. The Phillies are the 2 seed with the home field in the NLDS. They'll host the winner of the Dodgers and either the Reds or the Mets wild card series. And in the American League, all in Blue Jays, Yankees, Red Sox, Guardians, Tigers and Mariners. So congrats to the, the, you know, Cubs north for winning their third consecutive NL Central title. First team to make it in. So big, big congratulations to them and enjoy your. Your first, your first round exit too. Well, second round exit, but first series exit. Yeah, it'll be the Cubs because the, because the Cubs get to go there after they dismantle the Padres.
B
That's gonna be fun. Yeah, that's gonna feel like a World Series before the World Series locally, isn't it?
A
Yep, absolutely. And then, you know what you have now too came, came through in the American League for me. Red Sox at Yankees wild card. And then you're going to have Detroit at Cleveland or Cleveland at Detroit. So that AL Central matchup will happen in the wild card. And then Boston goes to New York for that wild card round as well.
B
There's one other, actually two other college football notes that I, I wanted to add on Friday night. Did you happen to watch the Virginia, Florida State fourth quarter and end of game?
A
I did not watch the fourth quarter. Saw highlights of.
B
It was. It was the entire thing, I thought outstanding television. I thought that everybody involved on ESPN did a really, really good job with that. Especially in the chaos of the post game. The fans stormed the field pretty violently, pretty intensely. You know, there was no ill, there was no ill intent, but apparently there were a couple students that were stretchered off that were injured in the melee. And I have a feeling that there's going to be some repercussions, but the meatball in me absolutely love that. Just loved it. Just, just was watching and they did an amazing job. They kept panning further back and further back and further, further back and widening the scope to show you everybody on the field. They could not find the post game interviewer. She got. She was so lost in there, the camera could not find her. She was unbelievable in getting a, an interview with the Virginia quarterback who was Chandler Morris. Is that his name? He like, in, in all that chaos, did one of the better post game interviews I've heard in a long time. That wasn't just clich. Where he was really saying stuff and then eventually the camera kind of found where she was and you could barely see the top of her head. And I don't know everybody who was on the crew because, you know, you just. You tune these games in and you see them and they. I don't know that they identified everybody that was involved, but just a terrific piece of television. The other thing that I was laughing about was the Florida State kicker is Weinberg.
A
So you, Lieutenant Weinberg.
B
Yeah, you. So I kept laughing because there was that. The great. The Sorkin writing in A Few Good Men. When you've got Colonel Jessup up there and just the anti. Semitism is just trickling out of the sides of his mouth. Who's gonna be on that wall? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? Like they cut to. There's Kevin Pollock there. Like, you might as well have had, like, a beard and a tallis on at that point when they show him what. I could be on the wall if you want. And so same thing. Who's gonna make the field goal? You, Weinberg.
A
That's great.
B
Yeah. You know, you don't see a lot of Weinbergs wearing football helmets. So I. I just thought that was not.
A
Not during a football game.
B
Not during a game. Yes.
A
One of our commenters said. Yes, it was. Homer was hitting the head.
B
Yes.
A
So there you go.
B
Right. Remember, they take the picture because he's.
A
No, I don't remember. He's not conscious. Yeah.
B
There's like a snapshot. He's knocked unconscious and the team standing behind him at the plate. He's out cold. Lying on the plate.
A
Okay.
B
Lying in the front of the team photo.
A
Well, there you go. Congratulations to the other college.
B
Note the Oregon right tackle.
A
Okay.
B
Number 71. Find his name. Who's that guy?
A
All right. Why is he good?
B
Monster. Like, he. He was a brute squad. They lined him up all over the place. They lined him up at left on a key play. They put him at wherever. Whoever that guy is finding. Is it like Mackie or Oregon? Number 71.
A
All right, this says number 71 is George Silva.
B
Wrong. Okay, that's wrong.
A
All right, so this is the 2024 roster. Did you mean the current roster?
B
Yes. Okay, so I was watching this game from last year. Apparently.
A
No, Alex Harkey is Alex Harkey. There you go. All right. He's a sophomore offensive lineman.
B
Where is he on the prospect lists? Because he looks huge. He looks like he's like 6, 5 and 3, 30. And there was one play where he took. He took an edge rusher and literally with his left hand, smacked him out of the play completely.
A
Oh, seriously, then.
B
So first the edge rusher the guy was rushing out of like an eight technique. And he comes at him and he sees him and with his cross hand, knocks him 5 yards toward the sideline. And then he's like, all right, you're gone. And then he sees a guy in front of him. And if I were that guy standing in front of him, I would have turned and run in the opposite direction as quickly as possible, possible, because he, and not only did he bury the next guy and not only did he bury the next guy, stood over him and yelled at him. And I, I'm just, I'm. This, I'm watching him. I, I. Because that, that was. And this, it's a real team too. You know, you're playing, you're not. The Penn State defense is no joke. Like, there's real guys there. I understand that happens all the time when you're playing your early non conference schedule and stuff like you would. You're on the road in a critical moment. And they kept running behind him. They. What did you say? Alex Harkey.
A
Alex Harkey, yeah. So he came from Texas State, where.
B
He came from the pits of hell. That dude is a menace.
A
Yeah. So this, he's 6.
B
6. 6, 6.
A
Wow.
B
Okay, 6, 6, what, like 3, 4, 47.
A
Yeah, this has him listed or says at 327.
B
Okay. All right. Because. Yeah, that's. I, I saw.
A
Is that a guy?
B
I don't know. I just, I just know that I, from then I started watching him after that play, I was watching him on every play. And, and, and I, you know, obviously I haven't done film work on him, but I'd love to know what a. Dane Brugler or, or.
A
Well, here's a scouting report on him. His strengths are run blocking instincts and hand use. His weaknesses are pass protection and balance in space.
B
Balance in space.
A
Above average run blocker. Average and pass protection. As a run blocker. He is above average. Displays a quick first step. Fires forward nicely to the second level. Runs feet on contact and creates vertical push. Has great hand placement and strike timing. Is a very good puller who can find color at the second level. Well, he shouldn't see color. Effective blocker on screens. Can move and run.
B
Okay.
A
Will sometimes wind up on the ground on his own in space.
B
Wait, what?
A
Will sometimes wind up on the ground on his own in space.
B
What is he, a fainting goat?
A
He just creates space and then falls. Wait, hold on.
B
I've got space. It happened again. Okay, well, that's bad.
A
All right, well, we'll keep an Eye on him.
B
Just, just watch. Watch that guy. 71 and Oregon Alex Harkey.
A
All right. So this is a projection is likely a mid, mid round low day two or high day three.
B
Okay, I, I will take the over on that one. I, I mean I, I will take the. However you define the higher in the draft than that because a tackle that can do some of the stuff he's doing, I, my, my guess is he will rise from that scouting report. Okay.
A
And from the I tell you too that my hot streak ended yesterday. So I apologize.
B
Oh no. Oh I gotta remember my bets today. I wrote them down about I don't have in front of me. I believe I have Travis Kelsey. This is.
A
Yeah.
B
Over 50. You my bookie bet on anything anywhere, anytime with my bookie that I have Travis Kelsey over 50 yards receiving in the late game today. And then I also have Cole Comet scoring a touchdown for the Bears today.
A
All right. So my hot streak ended with the. I had the Boston College Eagles giving six and a half and the over a 52 and a half taking on Cal. Well Cal won the game outright 28 to 24. So I lost that. And then the over or the under came in at 52. So sorry. And you know Boston College was up 14 nothing late in the first quarter and then they ended up losing their 28 24. So sorry about that if you followed me along on my bookie and if you haven't done it yet, why not make your account, make a deposit, start getting along on these games with us on my booking. Speaking of that, I this morning I did take the Bears point and a half. The Bears were getting a point and a half in this game.
B
Why are you feeling better about the Bears today?
A
I'm not. I just decided to take them because people think I hate the Bears. So point and a half and, and take the over 48. So that was on my book. I did that this morning.
B
The over unfortunately 48. Okay. All right. I just, I, I do think the Bears should win this game. When I really look at the quality or lack thereof in important aspects of the way the Raiders are going about their on field business right now.
A
No, I, I agree.
B
Secondary sucks. I think the offensive line sucks. And the, the wild card is the fact that Theo Benedict is going to be starting and Max Crosby lined up on him. Could you're talking about strip sack, fumble and game changing plays. Look at that comment.
A
So good.
B
He didn't say dramatically.
A
It didn't.
B
That way if a scouting report said tends to fall dramatically on the Ground by himself. Like, how dramatically would that be? Oh, Elizabeth, it's the big one. Oh, he does the wind up of the drop.
A
Yeah. But if you. If you look at it, though. Yeah, there you go. If you look at it, though, that on paper, the Bears should win this game, but they have to show up and play, so we'll see.
B
I'm still laughing at. Falls dramatically on the ground. Like, do you remember my other favorite one is Pete Postalwait as Fergie in the town at the very end when Ben Affleck's character shoots the security guard in the head and he comes upstairs and then Fergie ambushes him, goes, prick. And actually, the sad thing is Pete postaloi was actually dying when he made that movie.
A
From the gunshot wounds.
B
No, of cancer, but he was actually dying. So he certainly got the most. I don't know how many takes they had to do, but that is as scenery chewing a death as you're gonna get the way he kind of falls slowly and then. Yeah, tell him who clipped your nuts for you after he goes over and shoots him in the dick at the end. You don't see that part. But they, they, they, you know, insinuate that they.
A
Yeah, sure.
B
So, yes, that would be falling dramatically. That was a long winded way of talking.
A
So that's what your guy Alex Harkey does. He falls dramatically to the ground.
B
I'm on the. I'm on the Alex Harkey train. He's. He will be a minimum third round pick.
A
All right, we're going to keep an eye on him. I'm calling when we do our special draft day shows. We can see where Alex Harkey is going to land.
B
Yeah, we should get that started now. The special draft specials.
A
Oh, we're definitely going to start it once the Bears season's over, whatever part of the season that is. We're going to start our draft day shows.
B
Okay. Can we talk about. I know we may hit this tomorrow as well, but can we mention the absolute embarrassment on all levels that is the Ryder Cup?
A
Historically bad.
B
Not just the. The golf. What they're doing with this mc, trying to rile up the fans. I mean, it's. It is so cringe. They had this woman trying to organize the fans. Excuse me. Into these, like, European style chants. Mm. And nobody was paying attention or playing along. And then, like, the fans have been behaving horribly. Like, at least be clever, you. It's supposed to be raucous, but when this woman is leading a chant of fuck Rory McIlroy. Yeah, like that's not clever, it's not fun, it's not interesting, it's not in the spirit of healthy competition. And like the little dust up they had with Justin Rose and Fleetwood and DeChambeau all seemed silly. Like you're, you're getting clobbered and you're reacting because of the way somebody talked to a caddy. Well, this, this whole thing has been a massive embarrassment. So it was appropriate that the President was there.
A
Yeah, I'd say it seems very, very American for right now, so.
B
Oh, it was, it was quintessentially American right now. Just over the top. Just classless, jingoistic embarrassment. Yes. Perfect. Perfect for where we are right now. Gross.
A
One other thing on baseball too, Dan, because I wanted to just share real quick. I wanted to look at this morning. I looked at where Nico was at in all the races, nl, the hits. Luisa Rise, he's got that one pretty much wrapped up. Trey Turner's couple behind him. Trey Turner won the average, so he's at.305. Nico's at.297. He's not.
B
So that's it. The batting. He won the batting title or there's, there's one more game.
A
Yeah, but he's not going to catch him. It's a, it's a, it's a seven point difference.
B
Right. So if he was four.
A
Yeah, you can do the math on that. Home runs for National League. Kyle Schwaber is two up on Shohei. Rbi. Kyle Schwaber has got that wrapped up. He's six ahead of Pete Alonzo. American League, Bobby Witt, he's got that done at.183 because Boba Shetz. Boba Shet hasn't played since September 6th. He's two behind Bobby Witt.
B
Wow.
A
Yeah. Average for the American League. Judge, he's got that wrapped up at.331. Bichette and Jacob Willis in three. So Bichette. Bichette is second in hits, second in average and hasn't played since September 6th.
B
Well, for, I mean, average.
A
Average. It helps, obviously. Yeah. Home runs. Cal Riley's got that done with seven ahead of Judge and then RBIs. Cal Riley has 125, Judge at 114. And a special shout out here on DBU Sunday Morning Live to Vinnie Pasquatino, who has 113, one behind Pasquatch. So our guy Nico just not going to get there. Not going to get there in average or hits as he.
B
No, but there's a lot of good signs for a lot of great Signs. A lot of good signs for who's hot on the Cubs. You know, the fact that Bush is hitting the way his hap is really starting to hit.
A
Yeah.
B
And. And obviously the rediscovery of the Sea of Suzuki power stroke.
A
That works.
B
I. I can't tell you enough. Again, once we start these playoffs, the two things to remember. Excuse me. And I will. I will obviously repeat this. The variance rules. All. At this point, it's the bad teams can be good teams, good players can be bad. Bad players can be good. Mediocre players can be either. Over the course of a short series.
A
Yep.
B
Hit home runs.
A
Ball.
B
Go far team, go far. Hit home runs.
A
Yeah. And I think we kind of buried the lead too. We didn't mention the fact that Kate Horton is on the 15 day DL will not pitch for the Cubs.
B
So. No, I don't see him coming back at all.
A
I.
B
That seems like a pipe dream. The guy's got a broken rib.
A
Yeah.
B
And you're going to risk that? The quality of that. A guy who can be an ace pitcher to push him even. I mean, they just got to be ridiculously careful. Maybe he'll pitch in the World Series and that would be fantastic.
A
All right, so you start Matthew Boyd, game one.
B
Do you have a choice?
A
No, you don't have a choice. Boyd's one, and then who's two?
B
It can't be tyone yet. I'm trying to count the days here. They start Tuesday.
A
Yeah, they start Tuesday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Who would. So if you have Boyd's Tuesday, Tuesday.
B
Oh, Jesus.
A
You got tie on in game two.
B
That's short rest. That's one day short. Right.
A
So is it. Who's it then? Is it Colin Ray?
B
It's not good. Whoever it is.
A
This is not the way you want it lined up. No, not at all.
B
No. But that's. That's this time of year.
A
Yeah. Oh, for sure.
B
You do whatever you can do to get in. And now you rest, everybody. Obviously today is all low. Leverage everything and just let everybody have their fun. I was a little pissed at Ali Marmole for walking Michael Bush yesterday.
A
Yeah.
B
Come on. You're out of the game. It's the last game of the year. You're not playing for anything, Right?
A
Do you play Tucker today or Tucker set or does he get swings?
B
Up to him. Okay, up to him if he feels he needs it. Or maybe you let him get two plate appearances.
A
Okay.
B
It's not all or nothing. I think you ask him. Look, do you want to. You want to just. You Know, knock the rust off a little bit. Get a couple out there and then we'll. Then you can, you know, take your, your spikes off.
A
Yeah, I would hope that he gets at least one at bat and get some swings out there.
B
Yeah. Just have a dialogue with him. He's old enough. He's got enough autonomy and agency to decide what is best for him. Consult the trainers. Yeah, well, clearly, maybe, maybe like at least, at least prepare to play and you know, get, get your whole body in the routine and see how you feel and if everything feels okay, maybe play a little bit. But I just. Did you hear somebody actually emailed us and asked if Ali Marmol's comment constituted irony because Ali Marmo, when asked about why he didn't pitch to Bush, he said, I'm here to win something effective. I'm here to win baseball games. I'm not here for anybody's amusement. So I don't, I think his inability to understand where baseball fits in the larger picture of society. Of course, you hear from me. You're a baseball manager, right. You're out. Oh, you're all trotting around in tight pants hitting a ball with a stick. Entirely for our amusement. That's what you're here for. That's what you do. You, you are a pastime. You are amusement. So I do think that the lack of self awareness is funny. I'm not sure it constitutes irony.
A
I don't think it's. It's irony. It's. It's just silly. Speaking of managers in uniforms, I. The Cubs Friday uniforms, those. Their alternate jerseys here. I love, absolutely love have a light blue, light blue with a white pants. I love it looks great on Pete Crow. Love seeing it. It is the worst, one of the worst uniforms on a manager I've ever seen, though. It just, it does not look good on a manager. For some reason.
B
All uniforms bad on most managers.
A
Yes. This is what, this is one of the worst ones though.
B
Although I've been thinking about this.
A
Okay.
B
Do you know what is in a lot of ways now something you don't see anymore? Like when you watch even stuff from the, from the 80s into the 90s, certainly in the 70s, base coaches are in much better shape. Like all the base coaches used to be fat.
A
Well, Dan, baseball players back then when base coaches were fat, didn't look at.
B
I understand they weren't. But the idea, like you used to presume that most coaches were just, you know, big fat, farting drunks.
A
Yes.
B
And now they're, they're even the Old guys look more athletic. It's like what happened to referees when you start looking like every NFL referee is jacked. Every NBA referee. They all look like swimmers.
A
Yeah, that's what, that's what Sean Penn is morphed into. He's like. He's. He's like. Old man Jack looks like a referee. Well, in his tight T shirt.
B
It makes for a great exchange in the church. Really uncomfortable, but like perfectly executed. Awkward exchange.
A
He's got that. He's got that jacked old man with all the veins popping out loud.
B
Yeah, well, you know why? Well, yeah, because actors can inject whatever they want. Because it's not a competitive environment there. If you actually.
A
Yeah, it is.
B
They test every before every shoot that you. How old is Sean Pence? 62.
A
I think he's older than that, actually.
B
Seriously? Because that is as.
A
He's more than 10 years old than me.
B
Okay. That is as HGH. And it's on purpose, like, because that character, of course, would be out of his skull on all of that stuff. All the retail stuff.
A
He's 65.
B
He's 65. And he's. The guy's got. I mean, that, that's what. That's the best advertisement for steroids and human growth hormone you're ever going to see.
A
Oh, yeah. I just ordered some online, so.
B
And I was. I was talking with Beth about this last night. He'll have to get nominated for supporting. Even though he has almost as much screen time as Leo. That he's. He won't get a best Actor now.
A
No, he shouldn't. He shouldn't. He's not. No, he's not the lead. No.
B
Okay. Okay.
A
It's not his story. Yeah, he does have a ton of screen time. He's a very important figure.
B
He's going. He's going to be nominated story. And I'll tell you right now, if. If he. He will be nominated and he'll lose to Delroy Lindo from Sinners.
A
Oh, yeah. That's your. That's your. Your pick right there. Yep. Yeah, and we'll have those on our Academy Award night show too, as well.
B
Oh, and our fashion preview.
A
Yeah. Oh, my God. I can't wait.
B
You know what? I swear to God. We should do a red carpet show.
A
We are.
B
What do you mean we should do an Oscars red carpet show?
A
We're going to. We're going to do one and we're going to do one live on dbu.
B
I'm not kidding.
A
I'm not kidding either.
B
It's scheduled that's right. Because the great thing I'm learning about this show is like, okay, we should tell people exactly what happened. So I slept late because I was.
A
Is that normal for you? Because I. Seriously, I would I have you pegged as, like, an upper up early guy?
B
Well, on Saturdays and Sundays, I liked. Unless I'm going fishing. And I only did a little yesterday by the river. So if I don't have plans, I do like to sleep in. And I was up a little later last night. Oh, and I. And I ate. I mean, I made a huge T bone steak and eggs stem made steak and eggs. And I made my own hash browns. Like, scattered, smothered, covered hash browns with onions and cheese.
A
This morning?
B
No, last. Late last night, I did like a home, like, Waffle House thing. And this was a huge T bone steak. Covered it with a 1. I made everything try to be just like Waffle House. And so I was up, you know, just watching crappy movies and crappy college football. So I got to bed a little late and I figured, you know, what the hell? So, yeah, I slept in. And I get up and there's a text and you sent me like this. This, like, worksheet of everything that happened in sports so far this week. I'm like, wow, is this just something you get up and do? You're like, no, I texted you to see if you wanted to go on and do a live DBU. Oh, yeah, you did text me.
A
Yeah, it's 6:58.
B
I'm like, okay, I could be ready in 10 minutes or so.
A
Yeah. And I heard. I heard back from you at 9:15. Yeah.
B
So I figured, what the hell? All I got to do is come downstairs.
A
Oh, I know. No, I'm just saying, like, I put.
B
I'm wearing pants.
A
Check your phone.
B
I be up earlier Sunday. I don't. I don't have to. Although we are going to be on later. So a reminder that even though we're here on Dan Bernstein unfiltered immediately after the Bears game forward progress is going to be here and we are going to be live breaking everything down.
A
Yeah, this is just a special Sunday morning live edition. Because I was up early and I thought, what the hell? Why not? I'll text Dan and then hear back from him three hours later. So we'll be good to go.
B
Well, I'm not going to apologize for sleeping in on a Sunday. Why shouldn't I?
A
How much A1 did you use?
B
A lot.
A
Okay, good.
B
Yeah, because I pan fried the steak I bought and I rescued the steak from the bargain bin, it was kind of gray and crawling away. That's fine. But it's perfect. Because if I'm trying to do Waffle House, I don't want too good a steak.
A
Right.
B
And I seared it perfectly in the pan. I rested it perfectly. And then you know what I had for dessert?
A
Murder cake.
B
It was something that it was. No, it was something. I had ice cream two nights ago. It was something I had in mind because of our discussion about the top 10 Raiders.
A
Oh, you remember?
B
Yes. I had an entire bag of fun sized Twix bars.
A
An entire bag? Yes. Like, how many are in a bag?
B
20.
A
Okay, so you had 20 little individuals.
B
25.
A
What is that? That probably makes up four or five regular, like, packages.
B
Maybe they're like half said one, two. Yeah, something like that.
A
Okay, that's getting after it.
B
Are you judging me?
A
No, not at all. I'm honestly quite impressed.
B
I'm not even angry. Are you threatening me? No.
A
You ate the entire wheel of cheese. No, I'm not even angry. And then. So you did that like last night doing.
B
Doing Cornholio over the headphones.
A
Headphones.
B
That's a problem.
A
Yeah, that's a. That's a tough look there.
B
Now I've got it.
A
All right.
B
Are you threatening me now?
A
We have threatening me. We have our screenshot for the thumbnail. So that's perfect. There we go. You have to do every show, like, oh, for our red carpet show, you have to wear a T shirt like that. You need a tuxedo T shirt and wear it like that.
B
I need TV for my bunghole.
A
Okay.
B
All right, then where I come from, we have.
A
Did you have that whole bag of Twix before we went on the. On the show?
B
Here?
A
Is that when you ate them?
B
Okay.
A
Have you been to sleep yet? Is that okay, hold on.
B
Ow. Ow. It caught. Hold on. There we go. There we go. All right. All good. All right, guys.
A
Apologize for that. That scene there.
B
This is fun.
A
Yeah, it is.
B
We're not doing this every Sunday, are we?
A
No, we're not. Today was a special Sunday morning. Sunday morning live. That's what it was. Because again, I was up early. I was up early and I thought, you know what? Dan will be up by six. He's old like I am. He'll be up soon.
B
Well, I didn't prepare anything, so I'm completely all over the map.
A
It's fine. Oh, I prepared for you. That was the whole point of it. That's why I emailed you four sheets of Stuff.
B
I haven't really looked at it, but thanks for doing the work.
A
That's fine. I looked at it for myself.
B
No, I know. It's really more about preparing it than it is using it. It's sort of like when they let you have that three by five card of all the formulas for your physics exam.
A
Yeah. It's also like cooking too. Like when I'm cooking a big meal, I generally, if I have people over, I don't like eating. I know, like Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving. I barely eat. I barely eat Thanksgiving.
B
Every time I will make for like a one of the holidays where I'll make chicken soup and by the time it's like, oh, I gotta eat this chicken soup.
A
Yeah. Because it's a lot of tasting as you're cooking.
B
And I've been breathing it, like every, every aspect.
A
Especially like Thanksgiving because I make everything, all the sides and, you know, a couple different kinds of turkey breasts. And it's just like tasting everything as you're going through. When it comes time to serve, I'm like, I'm kind of full. I'm over it.
B
And then, and then after everybody leaves and I just want to eat everything at that point, that's when I get hungry.
A
Yeah, I'm not, I'm not a good Thanksgiving Day leftover eater. Oh, I'm really not. I know. It's. I'm a very small minority. I get that. I agree.
B
I haven't eaten. Are you all right? I'm gonna go eat.
A
Yeah, I'm gonna. I gotta go. I gotta go.
B
I got things to work out and then I'm. We're gonna get everything ready for our. For our post game.
A
Yes.
B
And I'm gonna figure I'm gonna get my mise en place all set for the Bears game and figure out what I can throw at the wall when Ashton Genti runs wild on them.
A
All right, well, good luck with that. All right, guys. Hey, thanks for jumping in on the. The live stream today here and all your comments. We do appreciate especially the help of the Simpsons since I don't. I don't want.
B
Yes, thank you.
A
Question. So that's it, Gary. Go do your stuff. I'm going to do my stuff. We'll see you back. Forward progress live once the Bears Raiders game concludes. And that's up to us. It could be third quarter, it could be fourth quarter, it could be after overtime, it could be right when the final whistle blows.
B
We never, we decide when the game is over. When we're here, that means the game is over. And I also want to say that Dan Bernstein, Unfiltered, is brought to you in partnership with my bookie.
A
Dan Bernstein. Unfiltered.
B
Unfiltered.
A
On three. One, two, sports.
Podcast: Dan Bernstein Unfiltered
Host: Dan Bernstein
Co-host: Matt Abbatacola
Date: September 28, 2025
Produced by: 312 Sports
This special Sunday morning live episode of Dan Bernstein Unfiltered brings the signature unfiltered takes and banter from Dan Bernstein and Matt Abbatacola to an unscheduled live stream. The show, brimming with the duo's humor and sharp sports analysis, covers a grab-bag of Chicago sports topics and national headlines, recaps a chaotic Saturday in sports, and previews a pivotal Sunday in MLB and NFL action. The hosts mix in lively personal stories, engage with live commenters, and offer their candid reactions to everything from youth football bee stings to the “embarrassment” that is the Ryder Cup.
Matt recounts his first-ever bee sting—on his tongue, during a homecoming parade (00:34). Dan gives practical advice about healing but mostly finds the situation “brutal.”
The story ends with a trip to immediate care, Benadryl-induced drowsiness, and Matt securing a prescription for an EpiPen (02:30).
Matt also shares his household’s current battle against a sudden invasion of stink bugs, culminating in the amusing (and somewhat grisly) solution of turning on the fireplace (04:47).
“I had my first bee sting in my entire life, pal, and it’s on my tongue.” – Matt Abbatacola (00:51)
“You guys are awful. I went out of my way to sit in front of a computer and watch you because you suck.” – Dan Bernstein, mocking detractors (07:19) “If you hate it that you—that’s a you problem.” – Matt Abbatacola (07:46)
“The Cubs ended up exactly where they were predicted… and through all of the silliness and all the roller coaster… look at larger trends and roll with it and you’ll get where you should be.” (16:06)
“Our brains are fried enough that the last thing we need is to keep track of records of games played there rather than here.” – Dan Bernstein (09:04)
Breaking news: Cubs pitcher Kate Horton is on the 15-day DL with a broken rib, casting doubt on a postseason return (37:17).
The hosts try to sketch out the Cubs’ makeshift rotation, echoing the anxiety of many Chicago fans (37:51).
“This is not the way you want it lined up. No, not at all.” – Matt Abbatacola (38:24)
“Not just the golf. What they’re doing… it is so cringe… just over the top. Just classless, jingoistic embarrassment. Yes. Perfect for where we are right now. Gross.” – Dan Bernstein (34:45)
“That dude is a menace.” – Dan Bernstein (27:13)
“I haven’t really looked at [the show notes], but thanks for doing the work.” – Dan Bernstein (48:36)
On Bee Stings & Homecoming:
“If I collapse on the sidelines, here’s the reason why.” – Matt Abbatacola (03:10)
On Cubs’ Consistency:
“Another reason don’t ride the roller coaster. Look at larger trends and roll with it.” – Dan Bernstein (16:06)
On the Ryder Cup:
“It was quintessentially American right now. Just over the top… classless, jingoistic embarrassment.” – Dan Bernstein (34:45)
On Ridiculous Sports Stats:
“Our brains are fried enough… the last thing we need is to keep track of records of games played there rather than here.” – Dan Bernstein (09:04)
On Draft Prospects:
“He came from the pits of hell. That dude is a menace.” – Dan Bernstein on Alex Harkey (27:13)
The conversation is candid, irreverent, and laced with Chicago-centric humor. The hosts keep it quick, occasionally self-deprecating, and freely share personal stories and strong opinions on sports, pop culture, and life’s little crises. Good-natured ribbing, inside jokes, and audience engagement cut through the sports talk, creating an off-script, friendly vibe that appeals to loyal listeners.
This episode is lighter on deep-dive analysis and heavier on quick hits, sports miscellany, and the hosts’ infectious chemistry. Perfect for Chicago sports fans looking for a few laughs, relatable anecdotes, and sharp, honest hot takes on the day’s sports news.
Listen to Dan Bernstein Unfiltered for sharp debate, old-school radio chemistry, and the best of Chicago’s unfiltered sports talk.
