Ariana Maddox
It was literally like get in a car at midnight, go outside of Vegas to some suburb dance studio. Pasha's there. We rehearsed from midnight to three in the morning.
Will Loftus
Ariana and I were definitely texting during the show.
Scott
No way.
Will Loftus
So I know that she was definitely watching live.
Scott
Really honored I got to do it on the show and in such a fun way. It's such a big moment. We've been excited to start a family forever, and that was, like, such a cool way to. To go, I guess.
Podcast Host
Hello and welcome to the Dancing with the Stars official podcast. Tonight was Wicked night, and the performances were thrillifying. Nine couples are dancing through life and into next week. We are now officially halfway through the season and the pressure is on. Whitney and Mark and Jordan Ezra were defying Gravity and landed the top spot in the leaderboard this week. But I am sad to say Scott and Riley will not be moving on and have been eliminated. They are on their way backstage right now to chat with me later, so stay tuned. I'm also going to chat with the wonderful Will Loftus, who is an associate choreographer for the Wicked and Wicked for Good films, and he has also been a music video choreographer for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. We'll be talking about his experience on the films and how he got his start right here in the Dancing with the Stars ballroom years ago. But my first guest is someone you know and love from the shows like Vanderpump Rules, Love island, and for a leading role as Roxy in Chicago on Broadway. It's season 32 finalist Ariana Maddox. Hi, Ariana. How are we doing?
Ariana Maddox
Hi. How are you?
Podcast Host
I'm great. I'm so happy that you're here. How are you feeling after tonight? I feel like you've been in the ballroom a few times. This.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah, this season so far. This is my second time in the ballroom this season. I feel like I, like, was screaming, crying, throwing up, sweating off all of my makeup that I. You know what I mean?
Podcast Host
You look great.
Ariana Maddox
You, like, come out and you're like, you know, it's an experience.
Podcast Host
We'll get into Wicked night, but first I want to talk about your experience on the show. You obviously coming off of the show came off of a public breakup, and it was one of those things that I feel like it came at the right time. Can you talk about what this show meant to you and what it's done for you since then, too?
Ariana Maddox
Oh, my God. I always talk about to people how much Dancing with the Stars literally changed my life. I think, like, something that Gets, like, very much. I had a very public situation going on, but something that gets, like, very, very overlooked of, like, during that time that was actually, like, I think much, much more of a struggle was that I had lost my grandma, you know, kind of like during that time. And so her not being able to come see me on the show after she was at front row of all my school plays with my mom and my, you know, my family. So, like, that was like a huge, huge part of it. And I think too, you know, it changed my life because, you know, I have a degree in theater. You know, I went to school for theater. I did theater my whole life. But then I, you know, as much as I was, like, working on being an actor, that connection to your body and the ability to express your feelings and emotions almost like, physically through the body is something that there's no other outlet for that. Right. Unless you're actively, like, going and taking dance classes. And even then it's not the same. Right. You don't have, like, a partnered up with a professional, amazing pro who's going to, like, take you through all these styles. You know, that's not real life. That never happens. So I'm so, so lucky I was able to do this show. And to be able to do it all the weeks, that was my big thing. I wanted to do all the weeks because it was able to connect me back to that part of myself. You know, I've dealt with anxiety and depression a lot over the years, and I think part of what kind of triggers that or when things start to get a little sticky for me mentally is when I don't have that connection physically to my emotions coming through my body. And I feel like it came for the. At the right time for me because I was able to move, move through so many different things, feelings and emotions and things that I was, like, going through at a very, very chaotic time in my life and come out the other side. I feel like truly like a different person.
Podcast Host
You can tell too, how much it meant to you, and I think that's so special that you use that time to really harness your emotions and make the most of it. When you look back on your experience with Dancing with the Stars, is there a certain week that you come back to or something that was, like, really pivotal for you?
Ariana Maddox
Yeah. So the music video week, I did a Cha Cha To Slay for your by Britney Spears, and that was the same week as bravoc. So I had to actually go to Vegas. Contractually obligated to go to Vegas that weekend.
Podcast Host
Oh, no.
Ariana Maddox
So Pasha came out to Vegas. We had to do. There was this a little, like, award show that we. I was a part of, and I had, like, a little bit where I presented an award and I sang a little thing. And then it was literally like, get in a car at midnight, Go outside of Vegas to some suburb dance studio. Pasha's there. We rehearsed from midnight to three in the morning.
Podcast Host
No way.
Ariana Maddox
And looking back in total, I think truly, I had, like, three days, really, to rehearse that before camera blocking. So, like, it was crazy. And then when you watch the clip, like, as they're saying, like, dancing the cha cha, the look, I'm like, I'm breathing pure fire because I was just. Just running on e. Running on e. And I'm like. Like, I'm just ready. And then it's like I blacked out. And I think, like, honestly, it was truly one of the best moments. I can't believe that it actually worked out and I didn't just bust my ass on tv.
Podcast Host
That's crazy to think about because you. I feel like in the show, people don't understand how much time you have. It's honestly sometimes doesn't even feel enough in a normal week. So to then take that away and have other stuff going on, that's actually really incredible.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah, it would be nice. You know, like, I always feel like, wow, it'd be so cool if, like, during that time, like, you don't have to do any other work. You don't have to do anything. You could just do this. What a joke. That would have been a dream.
Podcast Host
Yeah. I'll be honest. I will say that was me. I did nothing else in my life but dance.
Ariana Maddox
And look what he got.
Podcast Host
I think it helped a little bit. I, I can't complain because what people are able to do and to hear stuff like that, that's actually a true climb.
Ariana Maddox
Oh, thank you. Thanks.
Podcast Host
But I, I, I do like that you said that your goal was to get to the end of the competition. Was there ever a time during the experience where you were worried, like, that wasn't going to happen or what was that like for you? Because that's a usual goal. That was a goal I had, too, is I just want to be here the whole time.
Ariana Maddox
Want to be here the whole time. I want to do every single style every, like, all the weeks. You know, I didn't want to have that. Like, oh, I missed out. Yeah. Honestly, I think, like, in the beginning, because I. You never know. Yes, of course. Like, you're Gonna work as hard as you can to get the. Do the best as you can and have the best scores that you possibly can. But the voting and everything, that is just completely out of your hands. And you just hope that people are connecting with you and what you're putting out there. And so I think truly, like, in the beginning, I had no idea if that was gonna be the case or not. And then every week when you're standing up there and the lights are all red, you're like, what if it's my time? What if it's it?
Podcast Host
You never know. You really don't know. Also until the finale where you were the whole season because that was a scary part for me is we went to the. You're good. I felt like at the end, I was like, well, I made it here, but I don't even know where I was at in the votes. Like, I don't know if I was actually close to the bottom every week because they can't show that.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah, that's so true.
Podcast Host
That was always scary for me.
Ariana Maddox
Did they do a scary semifinals thing for you guys? I don't remember if they did it.
Podcast Host
For both of our seasons. Yeah, I wasn't in it, so I didn't have to sit there. Were you. Where were you at?
Ariana Maddox
It was me and sochi at the end, and it was going to one of us. And I was like, what the actual f. No, I was. And I. My heart was in my butt. Like, I thought, like, it was so terrifying.
Podcast Host
You think it could be you that's not moving on well.
Ariana Maddox
And I thought for sure, you know, she's. You know, I. This is. I feel like around the time that tik tok was starting to really pick up and she was super active on tik tok, and I was like, I haven't been posted on tik toks. I haven't been doing. They're not voting for me.
Will Loftus
This is it.
Ariana Maddox
I was like, I'm not. It's not going to be me. And then, of course, they were playing a very mean and cruel trick on us.
Podcast Host
Is there a performance you look back on that was your favorite from your season?
Ariana Maddox
I feel like our semifinals foxtrot. And that was the first time pasha had ever gotten a perfect score. And so it's, like, really meaningful to be able to be a part of that. That was, I think, my favorite, I think, because of the scores. And I have a really hard time. Like, yes, I wanted to get to the end. I wanted to do all the weeks, but I have a hard Time saying that I want to do things for me. And so something that really helped motivate me throughout the season was, like. Was Pasha. And, like, wanting to do things for Pasha. I'm like, I gotta get that 10. I gotta get those perfect scores. Cause I gotta get it for him because he works so hard, and he deserves it. And Nikita's a tiny little baby, and she, you know, like. Like, she's the best parents ever. You know, like, I had this extra motivation, and I think that's part of also what made the dance so nice. I feel like, to me, I don't know, when I look back and I watch the choreography of that, too, it's very much this, like, thing where I was like this. To me, I'm doing this for him in this dance and trying to be the best ballroom dancer I possibly can for the best ballroom teacher ever. And that was that one moment for me.
Podcast Host
You could feel that. I could see how much you guys built that relationship. And it's true. Like, once you really get connected with your partner, you try to do it for them. Like, I. I think when I won, the first thing I said was, this was for Jenna, Because I was like, she deserves this. She gave so much time and energy. They do so much for you that people don't see, and they fully deserve all of that credit when that happens.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah, people don't even know.
Podcast Host
Well, one other thing I want to talk about before we go into ton was it's so amazing that you came off of the show and then had this ability to be on Broadway with Chicago. And the fact that you were a theater major, I'm sure that was like, a dream of yours. How did that come together? And how was dancing a big kind of pivotal part of that?
Ariana Maddox
I mean, so Roxy is a big. You know, dance is kind of like her big thing within the show, and at least just, like, having that movement, being able to be connected to your body. I mean, it's Fosse choreography, right? So it's very specific, and it's crazy. I left. I walked out of the ballroom. Well, I limped out of the ballroom at the. After the finale, straight to my trailer and got on a red eye flight and had to go, like, announce it to the world. And I was like, this is actually the most wild thing ever in my hair and makeup for the night before. And it was. It was a really, really amazing experience. It was my dream, my whole life. And there, you know, they had expressed, like they had kind of put out a feeler, but I had to go through here and do workshops, like, you know, vocal workshops. I had to do a dance workshop. I had to do acting workshops and prove my abilities. And then I think, you know, them being able to see me on Dancing with the Stars is something that really kind of solidified their. Oh, okay. Like, she can do this. She's committed to this kind of thing. And to be honest, learning a new style and performing it live, kind of similar to theater, you know, except that it's recorded for all posterity and for millions of people. But having that, I feel like, you know, with Broadway and with Chicago, I learned the one show, so I was able to perfect it week after week, which would be so nice if you could.
Podcast Host
It would be really nice if you could do that. But that's amazing. I think the fact that you got to take this experience and then build that into something that was a dream of yours. And I will say, I know it's a dancing forward role. I've seen you sing. I could never. That is incredible, actually. You have a beautiful. And I'm sure that was such an amazing.
Ariana Maddox
Do you sing? You could do Billy Flynn.
Podcast Host
Hell, no, I can't sing. All right, well, let's kind of stay on the theme of Broadway here, because tonight was unreal. I love Wicked as a musical. The fact. The movie. And now that we have the new movie coming out soon, like, what was it like being in the ballroom tonight? Because I know you're a huge Wicked fan.
Ariana Maddox
Oh, my God. Yeah. Huge Wicked fan. Love the musical. So it's funny. I've heard some people have seen the first movie and they haven't seen this, which is crazy, but they haven't seen. They're not familiar with the show, so they actually don't know what's gonna happen in the second movie, the second act, which is very cool and exciting for them. I love the musical. I think it's so much fun. I think the movie. The first movie was so, so, so, so, so good. But there were so many amazing things tonight. I. The fact that John Chu was there.
Podcast Host
Unreal.
Ariana Maddox
I thought, he's so handsome.
Podcast Host
He's also an incredible judge. He did.
Ariana Maddox
He was a great job.
Podcast Host
I thought he did a really good job, like, talking about what the purpose of the song is and how it was the dance kind of, like, had that feeling in it.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah, he was really good out, you know, storytelling a lot, which I think is super important on the show because, you know, you get so into the minutia and the technicalities and want to get everything perfect. Wanting everything. Right. But when it comes to, like, Showtime, you got to tell that story, and you got to connect emotionally. Yeah.
Podcast Host
How does it make you feel?
Ariana Maddox
It. Exactly.
Podcast Host
That's important.
Ariana Maddox
By the way. I felt a lot of things. I was crying.
Podcast Host
Good. I want to. I wanted to ask about that. Which ones made you feel the most things? Let's get into it.
Ariana Maddox
I was screaming. Okay, first of all, Elaine and Alan, I. If there is a. There's. There's. It's possible there's a wide shot of the ballroom. I'm in the corner by the band, jumping up and down like. Like. Like I was watching.
Podcast Host
We need to get that wide shot. It was your Super Bowl. You were jumping.
Ariana Maddox
It was my Super Bowl. I was so excited. I was screaming for her. Absolutely incredible.
Podcast Host
Yeah, it was incredible.
Ariana Maddox
It was. You know, I know that that lift at the end of the song, it's such a risky thing to try to. Try to pull off because you have to run over there. You got to make sure everything's, like, gonna work. Just technically, you know, with the staging and everything.
Podcast Host
A lot of moving parts.
Ariana Maddox
And it was such a huge. You know, they say huge risks, huge reward, and it was a huge reward. My other big standout, of course, I know I'm biased, but I am also right is Danielle and Pasha with that Argentine tango.
Podcast Host
What a night for that.
Ariana Maddox
It was hot.
Podcast Host
It was great.
Ariana Maddox
And there was pyro, so it was literally.
Podcast Host
No, it was actually hot. You were on the left side T shirt. Isn't it crazy? I don't think people understand how hot that pyro actually is. Did you have that for one year numbers before?
Ariana Maddox
I don't think I had pyro. I had the fireworks.
Podcast Host
We had. We had pyro for when we did hair metal night. And we were up there and I was on the, like, drums, and Jenna was behind me, and I was like, jenna, you might catch on fire. Like, I can feel it on my wig right now. I was like, is. Am I going to be coming out to a. Literally a blazing tango in a second?
Ariana Maddox
Yeah.
Podcast Host
It's crazy how hot the pyro is.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah.
Podcast Host
But that dance of them was incredible.
Ariana Maddox
So good. And there's steps. She did some steps that I was like, oh, my God. I remember when I did that, when I did Argentine tango. That are so difficult. The flicking of the feet and that rotation that they did in the beginning like that. It's so difficult, the lifts. Getting her legs around like that, that was absolutely incredible.
Podcast Host
Insane. And I think people forget in Argentine tango because it's such a violent dance. And I mean that in a good way. When you hold a lift, it's really hard because there's so much power that's coming into this move. And you have to hold this picture out of nowhere just like that.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah.
Podcast Host
And that was the hardest part for that dance for me. And I thought they did such a good job at creating little pictures in the dance in the middle of this, like, fiery, fast moving dance.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah, it was really cool. I mean, honestly, like, I could talk about every dance. I thought Robert with the book on the floor and the feet on the book and then slinging it off like that, absolutely brilliant. I thought Andy, when he hit that group choreo with the arms, crushed it. Tonight killed was amazing. And I honestly okay this. You know, people. People are like, you know the whole thing about, you know, he's like, oh, I'm older or this. And I'm like, babe, you're doing it.
Podcast Host
He's doing it.
Ariana Maddox
You're doing it.
Podcast Host
And again, tonight being the night where he, I think for the first time stayed on music the whole time.
Ariana Maddox
Whole time.
Podcast Host
And never actually made a mistake in the dance because it's hard. You're gonna make a mistake most of the time. He hit his choreo and he stayed in the pocket the entire time.
Ariana Maddox
So good. Ezra and Jordan, unreal.
Podcast Host
For. Did you do a rumba?
Ariana Maddox
I did.
Podcast Host
I hate rumba. I had to do it twice on my season.
Ariana Maddox
Twice.
Podcast Host
Yeah, we did an instant dance. I had to. I had to do a rumble. I didn't even know the song and we had to go do a rumble.
Ariana Maddox
Thing was actually.
Podcast Host
That's really hard.
Ariana Maddox
That was messed up.
Podcast Host
Rumba is a really, really hard dance. I think I give a lot of credit on a night like tonight where there's so many, like, big numbers for both Danny and Dylan and for Jordan and Ezra to do like quality rumbas on a night like tonight is hard.
Ariana Maddox
It's really tough. I think rumba was the week that actually was most pain. Physically painful because you're having to do all that, like trying to do the.
Podcast Host
Figure 8 and actually move your body. Because you're watching right now. This is how mean look when we're doing.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah, it's like. And then you have to cut. Do like the cutting into the. Oh, my God.
Podcast Host
I'm impressed for tonight by those two doing that.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah.
Podcast Host
Because that was. Those are hard dances.
Ariana Maddox
Those are really hard dances. I feel like there was, like, more that stood out. Honestly, I just like, I've blacked out at this point, because I've had, like, a breakthrough out there.
Podcast Host
It was an experience. You got to see the performance of Wicked in a atmosphere of a ballroom that you love. And I think that's so special in.
Ariana Maddox
Front of the director.
Podcast Host
Yeah, Like Big John. Menstruation.
Ariana Maddox
Star Trek. A starstruck. A starstruck.
Podcast Host
I love it. Well, Ariana, we really do appreciate you coming in. Thank you.
Ariana Maddox
Thanks for having me. I'll talk about Dancing with the Stars any day.
Podcast Host
Hey, we can keep going.
Ariana Maddox
Come up to me on the street. I'll talk about Dancing with the Stars.
Podcast Host
Oh, we can do that. And don't go anywhere, guys, because Scott and Riley are headed over from the ballroom right now. And I'll be chatting with them later. But up next is Will Loftus, who is an associate choreographer for both Wicked films right after this.

Podcast Host
My next guest is someone very familiar with the world of Wicked. Please welcome one of the associate choreographers from both Wicked and Wicked for Good, Will Loftis.
Will Loftus
Hello. Hi, Will.
Podcast Host
How you doing, man?
Will Loftus
So good. Thank you so much for having me.
Podcast Host
I'm stoked that you're here, man. I think it's so cool that you have a connection with both the world of and also Dancing with the Stars. How was it for you being here tonight?
Will Loftus
Yeah, I mean, it was crazy. I mean, even pulling up today in the parking lot, like, just walking outside and seeing all of the Wicked props all over. The Dancing with the Stars set was so crazy to me to see that those worlds come together.
Podcast Host
Yeah, I think it's so cool that the worlds came together. And I want to start asking about your Dancing with the Stars experience, because if I'm not wrong, this is Kind of where your career started was with this show, right?
Will Loftus
Yeah.
Podcast Host
Can you give me a little background on what that was like and how you came into this world?
Will Loftus
Yeah. So I moved to LA when I was 2009, I want to say, and I think one of my first jobs I ever did in 2010 or 2011 was dancing on this show.
Podcast Host
That's amazing.
Will Loftus
So I danced a couple random times for different numbers and things. And then Mandy, which I know, you know Mandy Moore, she's the best.
Podcast Host
We got her on an episode earlier this season.
Will Loftus
I've seen it. She's the best person in the world. But I was assisting her for a while on the show, and then she started working more consistently on the show. So then I was kind of here with her for a full season or two. Yeah. And then I just kind of started choreographing more the numbers and working on the tours and whatever. So I've really, like, grown up with these people.
Podcast Host
And now I think you. You have to take a second and realize what you've done in these past few years and how cool it is to be an associate choreographer for films like Wicked and the new movie coming out, the Wicked for Good. I feel like that's crazy to be a part of that experience. What was it like being able to be a part of that?
Will Loftus
I mean, I. If I'm honest, I still don't think it's like, hit me because, you know, we just had so much time working together on the projects that, like, same as here, we kind of just became a family. Yeah. So I think. I don't know. When you live in that bubble for so long, it's kind of hard to see outside of it, you know, So I don't know. I still think I'm sort of.
Podcast Host
It's still coming together.
Will Loftus
Yeah, kinda. Yeah.
Podcast Host
So how was it working with choreographer Chris Scott and director Jon Emcho?
Will Loftus
The best. I mean, Chris and I have worked together for, like, over 10 years. And same with John. Actually met John through Chris probably a decade ago. So just to see them and their relationship evolve and see them both as individuals evolve and just for us to kind of full circle, end up back in this moment together is really crazy, and it's really awesome. It's insane.
Podcast Host
And then I think it's cool that from this experience you've created some relationships with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. What has that been like since the show and what's kind of come out of that?
Will Loftus
Oh, my God. I mean, look, they, you know, not only. Obviously, they're the most talented people, like, ever, but they're also just like the coolest, nicest, most grounded, hardest working people. So I don't know, it's been cool to. Like I said, I think because we worked together for so long, we just kind of became like a family pretty instantly. So sometimes I forget, like, you know, who. Not who they are, but kind of in a way, you know, they just feel like my friends.
Podcast Host
Yeah. So you also, with Ariana, you choreographed her? Yes. And video, Is that correct?
Will Loftus
Yes.
Podcast Host
How was that experience?
Will Loftus
I mean, yeah, it was incredible. We had finished filming and had a couple months off, and she FaceTimed me out of the blue. I knew that she was making music, and so I knew that there were songs coming out. But, yeah, she just FaceTimed me and asked me, and I was so honored, and, like, we both cried. And I don't know, it was just a really, really, really beautiful experience to be able to do that with her. And, yeah, I feel very grateful to have had that time with her.
Podcast Host
When you and Ariana came together, you connected initially. Was there anything you guys have done in the past or anything like that?
Will Loftus
So, you know what's funny about that is the only time that we had actually worked together was here on Dancing with the Stars.
Podcast Host
Really?
Will Loftus
Yeah. I was assisting Mandy years ago, and Ari was coming onto the show to do a performance in the finale, and they just needed someone from the show to kind of coordinate with her team. Like, I think we wanted to incorporate some of our dancers into the performance, and so I kind of helped organize the performance from, like, the Dance with the Stars side with her team and kind of put our worlds together. We didn't really even, like, interact or, like, hang out that much, but I definitely was, like, on stage with her.
Podcast Host
That's so cool.
Will Loftus
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Podcast Host
I feel like that's a really funny way that you guys have this, like, shared experience. It comes back to Dancing with the Stars, and that's how you knew her. And now to see where your relationship is now is so cool.
Will Loftus
That's crazy.
Podcast Host
And then I know that tonight being a night where the Wicked and Dancing with the Stars comes together, did they any of them actually, like, tune in or watch the show? Do you know they're watching at all?
Will Loftus
Ariana and I were definitely texting during the show, so I know that she was definitely watching live. I know Cynthia's in London right now, so she might be a little bit. Her timing might be off, but. But I know that for sure that they were watching. And are so in love with it.
Podcast Host
That's so cool to see that. What did. What did Aria. Ariana think of the show?
Will Loftus
Oh, she loved it. We were, like, live tweeting to each other, basically. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, no, she loved the whole show. And. Yeah.
Podcast Host
Let's talk about tonight. Cause I think it's so cool that you have this background of the movie and you also understand what it's like choreographing on the show, being a dancer on the show. Yeah, yeah. What did you feel when you came into tonight and you saw the first dance and everything else coming in? Like, did you feel the magic of Wicked tonight when you were out there?
Will Loftus
Yeah, of course. Well, and also the magic of Dancing with the Stars.
Podcast Host
Yeah.
Will Loftus
You know, they're both very, like, powerful, like, forces, so I think having them two come together is just. Is crazy. And. But, yeah, I think you definitely felt like the second you pulled up to the studio today, and you see, like, the tulips outside, and you see, like, a bunch of green and a bunch of pink. It's like.
Podcast Host
There's a lot of green and pink, too.
Will Loftus
Yeah, yeah. Like, really transforms the world. Yeah. It's crazy.
Podcast Host
One of the performances I want to talk about was Alex and Val. They did. What is this feeling? They did a jazz to that. What did you think about that number and how it kind of.
Will Loftus
It was amazing. Like, she. First of all, I literally. I saw her from across the room today, and I was like, is that Ariane?
Podcast Host
Like, who. Like, she looks like Linda.
Will Loftus
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But no, it's just. And, like, they did, like, the book choreography, which is so cool. And I don't know, I feel like she really embodied Glinda in, like, such a fun, beautiful way. So, yeah, it was cool to see.
Podcast Host
I thought it was cool. That was one of the numbers tonight, too, that they really did have a lot of, like, giving the musical number to the camera. Like, they were mouthing out certain moments, and you could feel like you were in the musical when it was going on.
Will Loftus
Well, also, that's, like, one of the most catchy songs of all time.
Podcast Host
So catchy.
Will Loftus
So. Yeah, yeah. No, I loved it.
Podcast Host
What'd you think about Whitney and Mark with their quick step that they did to Popular?
Will Loftus
Oh, my God. Incredible.
Podcast Host
Yeah.
Will Loftus
I mean, they were amazing. But also, I just have to take a second to shout out, like, the set design and, like, all of the work that all these departments put into making this night happen was insane.
Podcast Host
Did you know that tonight there was actually props from the movie?
Will Loftus
That's Cra. I mean, I thought. I wondered.
Podcast Host
It looked familiar.
Ariana Maddox
Yeah.
Will Loftus
Because I was like, either they've completely replicated this, like, perfectly, or it's from the film. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Podcast Host
I was told. I think there's a. There's a moment. Alfonso and Julianne were like holding wands. And those were actually from the movie. The cart that gets pushed was from the movie as well. So there's a lot of things in the show tonight that actually came from the movie too. Talk about bringing the world together.
Will Loftus
So crazy. Yeah.
Podcast Host
What did you think about the idea of doing like a quick step, an actual ballroom dance like that and changing it to that number? Because I thought that was one of the more ballroom forward dances of the night. With a number like Popular. Did you like seeing those worlds kind of come together?
Will Loftus
I mean. Yeah. Cause it's definitely not. Like, that's not the expected choice, I think, but I thought it was really cool. Well, and also they pitched the tempo up.
Podcast Host
I was gonna say they changed the music. It was a really unique way of it.
Will Loftus
Yeah. So it was cool to hear that version of the song because I think it fit the style for Quick Step really well.
Podcast Host
Exactly. No, I thought that was co. That there was a little shift in it for that one tonight also.
Will Loftus
Can I shout out? The singers are amazing.
Podcast Host
Please. We can shout out everyone.
Will Loftus
Oh, my God.
Podcast Host
I thought the music was unreal to me.
Will Loftus
Like, what? And also to sing Popular, that speed and that, like, it just was really impressive. One thing I learned about being on the show is like, because it does feel there's always the next episode. Always the next thing. It's like these people that put the show together are like insane. They're like some of the most talented.
Podcast Host
People in the world and they have their own lanes that they work so hard in. And it's crazy how it all comes together. It feels like it just happens, but they don't realize how much goes into it to make it so seamless.
Will Loftus
Yeah.
Podcast Host
No, it's special. Another dance I want to talk about, cuz I was with you and I saw your reaction to it. Andy and Emma doing the. Obviously doing one short day jazz.
Will Loftus
I love it so much.
Podcast Host
Oh, I think you said right. When it happens, like, give him a 10. Give him a 10 right now.
Will Loftus
I just, you know, it just the joy in my heart watching that number. You have no idea what that did for my spirit.
Podcast Host
It was so special.
Will Loftus
No, it was so special. And I love Emma and he's amazing and it just. It was so beautiful to see that come Together and literally just brought me so much joy. It's crazy.
Podcast Host
It was with the troupe coming in and then I think it was right when they started doing the full group number and the choreography started. You were losing it.
Will Loftus
Well, it's also Emma Slater passing out right when she walks into Emerald City was so good to me. Yeah, Yeah. I love it.
Podcast Host
There was cool. I thought there was a lot in those dances tonight. Little nods to the movie.
Will Loftus
Like, you talked about the little things.
Podcast Host
So cool that they brought that in and they had those moments. A little Easter eggs throughout today.
Will Loftus
Yeah, yeah. I'm pretty sure I saw a holding space moment at some point.
Podcast Host
That was in. I think the one of the biggest ones was Jordan and Ezra. They actually put it into part of their dances where there would usually be, like, a wrist holding the rumba. Instead, they did a little finger hold. I caught that. It was pretty good.
Will Loftus
Yeah. Yeah. I really like that.
Podcast Host
It was pretty good. Another. Another dance I want to talk about too, because I thought it was cool that we went into some of the new numbers that are going to be coming in the. In the new movie wicked for good. What did you think about Jen and Yan's dance? They did the fox shot to as long as you're mine.
Will Loftus
Yeah, no, I. I loved it. And I think what you were. It's like I think the two different movies have such different kind of feelings. I mean, obviously it's the same world, but movie two definitely has a different sort of feeling and mood. And I felt like they really embodied the feeling of the second movie in such a beautiful way.
Podcast Host
I agree. I think they did a great job. And you are biased on someone in this competition. You let me know that you were a big fan of Danielle Fischl. You said that she's one of your favorites.
Will Loftus
Yeah, love.
Podcast Host
Tell me a little bit what you felt about Danielle and Pasha because this was her best score yet. This was one of her best dances. How did you feel about that?
Will Loftus
It was incredible. Like what? Like even just that opening, like, moment, the opening, like, thing that, like, I just felt like the intensity was so beautiful and same. That was another routine I felt like had so much content in it as well. But you still felt them, like, owning it. It didn't feel like they were getting lost in the piece.
Podcast Host
Yeah. Again, man, we appreciate you coming in. I think you had such a unique perspective to understand the movie and the dance with the star side, so we appreciate your time.
Will Loftus
Oh, my God. Thank you for having me. I'm so honored. Thank you so much.
Podcast Host
Seriously, well, don't go anywhere, because up next, we have. Scott and Riley will be right here to chat with me about their experience this season right after this. Joining me now is a couple I am very sad to see go. It's Scott and Riley. Hi, guys.
Will Loftus
Hello.
Podcast Host
Even you just gave me puppy dog faces. I don't like it.
Scott
Oh, my gosh. I feel like you have such a hard job having to interview people getting limited every week.
Podcast Host
You know, it is. It is hard. But I think one of my favorite things about it is that it gives you guys the floor to talk a little bit more about how important and special this experience is for you, because I think it happens so quick on tv. And what I love is really just giving you the floor, and I want to do that now. Scott, like, I can say how you're feeling. I know it's sad, but, like, what is the first feeling that comes to your mind right now after tonight?
Scott
Honestly, the first feeling really is gratitude. Like, I love this show, and I wanted to be on it. It's such a big season, and Riley and I got along instantly, and we got to do six weeks of it, and so I feel like I really got to experience it. Announcing a baby on it, like, all of it was just really, really special. And I've made lifelong friends on the show, but I'm obviously really heartbroken because I just, like, I'm just disappointed because I know I could do better, but just anxiety gets the most of you out there, and some people can handle it and some people can't. And I feel like I really went out there very confident. I felt good about this dance, but I just, like, blacked out and just didn't kill it, but. And I feel bad. I feel bad for Riley. She worked so hard.
Riley
Do not feel bad.
Scott
But I. But I'm proud of what we did, and you should be, and I'm happy that it happened for you.
Podcast Host
There's a lot to be proud of, and we'll get into that. But what about tonight, too? Like, why did you maybe feel like it wasn't the best that you could have done tonight? I guess with that number, it was.
Scott
Kind of this weird, like, freak accident. Like, I. Like, we were doing the number. I've done it a million times, drilled it, and then I just blanked. Like, I missed a move, and then I could not recover. So I was just kind of, like, moving my body and watching Riley and trying to, like, get back on. And then there was, like, a moment where we, like, run and that, like, locked me back In. And then right when after we run, we, like, I, like, do the lift, and, like, her dress just covered everything. So I was like. And then. And then I was like, all right, not going amazingly. I was like, so I'm gonna smile big. But then we locked in, and the end was good, and I'm glad it ended well.
Podcast Host
Yeah, there were a lot of moments. And I can speak firsthand. I hate lifts, dude. I think they are so hard to be able because, like you said, it could everything be going so swimmingly, so well, and all of a sudden, one little movement and you feel like you're almost off time. Is that kind of a feeling for you in that dance, too?
Scott
Yeah. Yeah. Like, I feel like it was even before the lift. It was like, right when I go down the stairs at the beginning. I don't know what it was. It was just like. Like, my brain just didn't fire something. I was like, nothing. No thoughts in my head. And I was, like, suddenly very aware I was out there. And I was like, I'm out here on the ballroom floor, and I don't know what dance moves I'm doing. And it, like, really flustered me. But hopefully it didn't read too bad.
Podcast Host
It didn't, though. That's what I was just going to say is you actually still. It's because you are a performer. You were so lit up on the dance floor again. You can tell. You guys have so much fun when you dance. It really is obvious to see. Riley, I loved at the end tonight. You just let out, like, the most pure. I love you. To Scott, what has this friendship been like for you that you guys gotten to build in this amount of time?
Riley
Just the best. Scott, like, seriously was so kind from the start. And immediately when he walked in the room, I felt like we just got along so well. And I'm so proud of you.
Scott
Oh, thank you.
Riley
You did so amazing. And we really just. I became best friends with Scott and obviously his husband Mark. I was a part of such a big announcement of their pregnancy, and so I just feel lucky.
Scott
Yeah.
Riley
Yeah.
Scott
I love you.
Riley
You're awesome. Yes.
Podcast Host
That's so special. I think it's important to realize that this is obviously a competition. You get this ability to do something so crazy, like ballroom live on tv, but you really connect because you spend so much time with your partner. How was it to be able to have, though, this, like, announcement of announcing your kid with Mark on TV with all of this? Because I. I can tell how much it meant that you guys got to do this all together.
Scott
Oh, my gosh. It was.
Riley
Was.
Scott
It was like one of the most special moments of my whole life. Like, I'm just, like, really honored I got to do it on the show and in such a fun way. It's such a big moment. We've been excited to start a family forever, and that was, like, such a cool way to. To. To go, I guess. And I'm so honored you were a part of it. And it was just, like, a really beautiful experience filled with so much love, and that's why I can't, like, have any. I mean, I'm obviously sad to go, but, like, I'm so glad we got to experience a month and a half of it and, like, and got to do that really special moment. It was like, I just feel really lucky.
Podcast Host
You are. You have so much to be proud of. I want to talk a little bit more about some of your favorite performances. I know it's a little bit one of those things. Like, we're sad to go, but there is a lot we can reminisce on. So what was one of the performances that you think back on in this experience that you are so proud of and you can't stop thinking about? I guess.
Scott
Well, I mean, definitely the foxtrot to parallel that was so cool in the announcement. But I would also say, like, Jenny.
Riley
Yeah, that one was so fun.
Podcast Host
You guys seem confident in that. That was a different level for you guys.
Scott
Yeah, that was like that. That dance. That type of choreo is like, what I love about dancing. Like, that's like when I'm learning a TikTok dance or learning anything I like, it's like always, like, that type of dancing. So I felt like really in my element, and we were so connected on that one.
Riley
Yeah.
Scott
So I'm proud of that one.
Riley
Yeah. I feel like another really fun one was our bop to the top one.
Scott
When we were riding Charlie.
Riley
I feel like when we were just, like, be characters and characters that we kind of are like. Like Ryan and Sharpe, it was so fun, but we've had some fun ones. Like, genuinely, I felt like every single week with you, I felt proud of what I created. Like, I genuinely felt proud of the choreography I had and the performance we had. It's just a crazy, tough season this year, and that's what it came down to. But I think that you did an amazing job. And every single week, I was so, so proud of what we created.
Scott
Oh, thank you, Michael. Another. And the side by side in Abracadabra. Abracadabra. Slade, too. I'm proud of that.
Riley
That little section.
Podcast Host
Were you stoked to see. I wanna come back to the Ryan Sharpay. Were you stoked to see that people caught onto the hat changes the entire time?
Scott
Oh, my God.
Podcast Host
Yes.
Riley
So good.
Scott
It's so funny. I had more hats to come. I had a graduation cap that was gonna be next, but I got stopped.
Riley
Yeah, he put on the graduation cap and they're like, he can't do that.
Scott
We're gonna draw the line there.
Riley
Yeah.
Scott
No, I was so excited. Cause I was wondering if people were gonna notice.
Podcast Host
They did.
Scott
I love that.
Podcast Host
If you guys didn't catch that, definitely look back on it. Because they had a moment where there was just a little in the background every single moment. They would go to Julianne, you would just see Scott was in the back with a different hat and just smiling and happy to be there. And it was so good.
Riley
Literally, I remember you pitched that idea to me. You're like, I'm going to order a bunch of hats that Ryan wore, and then I'm going to wear them for every commercial break. I was like, oh, I don't know about that, Scott. That could be risky. I don't know if they'll let you. And he's like, I'm going to do it.
Scott
I'm like, it's easier to apologize.
Riley
Yeah.
Podcast Host
I want to talk about something tonight, too, because a little birdie told me that you're a big John M. Chu fan, and I was told you had something you want to tell him, and I feel like this is the perfect space to do it. You have as much time as you want because I know how much you love Wicked and apparently John M. Chu. So please, the floor is yours.
Scott
I love you for setting that up. Now, this is me trying to manifest, but I. If there is a third installment of Wicked, whether it's a prequel, Elfie Rick, like any. Any part of the lore, I will play extra number seven that you see in the background waving like. That's how bad I want to be in the movie.
Riley
Oh.
Scott
Or any movie you do, because everything you do is amazing.
Podcast Host
All right, John, you heard that? That is coming straight from the source right there. So don't forget that you can see the man can perform tonight. He realized that, too. Was there any dance throughout the competition that you felt at least the style of it was a little bit more challenging? Because I do think it's crazy to think about how difficult ballroom is to learn in such a short period of time. Was there any ones you like? Look that you felt were pretty tough.
Scott
Yeah, I mean, they're all really, honestly tougher than I expected. Like, when you watch it on TV and they make. Everyone makes it look so effortless, you're like, I can do that. I can dance. I can do a jazz square, too. But no, there are so many layers of thought. I mean, you know, like, it's like your foot being pointed and your chest being out and your shoulders being back. And I have, like, two giant curves in my back. I have, like, really severe scoliosis. And, like, it was just. Just like, so many things to think about. And then it's like live television. Go. And it was just. It was a lot. I was expecting not to be as anxious. And I was like, it was really, really hard. And I would say the tango is probably the hardest one because that had the nerves of the week one. And I didn't really realize how perfect you have to be.
Riley
Yeah.
Scott
I was like, yeah, we got it.
Riley
Yeah, it'll work out.
Scott
Yeah, we'll put our arm out and walk.
Podcast Host
Yeah. I think that's a really good segue into what I want to talk about next. And you can touch on this, too, Riley, because you've been on the show a bit now, but it's so different to see someone like you, who is a natural performer. Like, it's obvious that you can do this and you can perform. Get into a scenario like this of ballroom, and sometimes it just doesn't give you the same level of confidence you would expect. Oh, no, what was that like? Because you feel more comfortable with this, with a mic in front of you and the ability to sing. Why. Why do you think that is such a. A difference that it. Sometimes it can't always come together as you would expect?
Scott
I mean, that is the, like, the biggest realization I, like, made on the show. One of the biggest. I'm like. I felt. I've had people tell me, like, you don't even, like, seem like yourself. Like, you're so nervous and, like, I'm just like. I don't know. It's so different. And I feel like it's a beautiful thing in a way, because it was, like, bringing up insecurities of my, like, childhood. Like, I was, like, shyer than normal. I mean, like, if you come to a Pentatonix concert, I'm just, like, on the fly, winging it. Like, just not nervous, like, walking around an arena, but, like. But this was so different. It felt, like, vulnerable in a way that I have not been in years. And I think that that's what was so great about it is like, it threw me so far out of my comfort zone. It, like, shook me. I feel it's like life changing in ways.
Riley
Yeah.
Scott
And, yeah, I just feel stronger because of it.
Riley
That's awesome. I love that.
Podcast Host
Bry, did you see a lot of the growth throughout the year? Because I know I did. I'm sure you can speak on that with, like, the level of confidence that you had, because I do remember week one coming up. You and I was like, that's not the. That's not the Scott. I know this man is petrified to get out there right now. Yeah, it's different. But can you talk about what you've seen with, like, the growth of that with Scott from.
Riley
Yeah, no, Honestly, each and every week, he got better. Not only did he, like, let his anxiety just kind of, like, flow out of him, I remember week one, it was just there was so much nerves, which makes sense. This is so scary. I can't imagine if I've never danced before, and I would go out there and try and do it. So I felt those nerves went away. But at the same time, you applied and you adapted to the technique of the dance and got better each week. It's interesting. Cause on the show, it's a different style each and every week. So it's not like you can prove that you'll get better at the tango or the foxtrot, but you still apply the critiques that you'd got on the dance and applied it to the new style, which you don't really see that often. And I think it was really cool to see that and to feel your investment in all the technique after each week. It was just really awesome as a teacher.
Scott
Oh, thank you.
Podcast Host
Yeah, you guys are just too cute. I really do think that's a huge testament to how much you were committed to it, too. Like, you could tell you were all in it because that doesn't happen by accident. You have to be putting in the hours to it. Can you talk about how long the process is and the hours? Did you expect it to be what it was?
Scott
Yeah. I mean, everyone had told me going in, like, it's really intense, a lot of hours. So I did expect it in ways, but I didn't expect it to be such a roller coaster, like, emotionally, too. Like, physically it was really hard, and I was just like. Like feeling amazing one day, and then one rehearsal, I'm, like, all of a sudden crying, and I'm like, sorry, I don't know what's happening. I'M crying. It was just, like, really. It was really intense in that way. I didn't expect that, but I loved diving into it because, like, just learning a new skill and trying to master it was just, like, it made me. This is so cheesy to say, but, like, it makes you feel alive. I'm like, this is so thrilling. It makes me want to, like, just try to new things and start learning new things. And it was so cool to, like, become best friends and, like, meet new people and, like. And, like, even the crew and the people who run the show are just like, everyone's so lovely. That it was like, I just love diving into this world. And it kind of was like, a different world than normal. Like, I literally haven't checked my text in, like, weeks.
Podcast Host
What do you guys think you're going to miss most? I know it's sad to, like, think of that it's over, but it's also. There was probably a lot you were looking forward to as well.
Riley
Honestly, rehearsals every day were just so fun.
Scott
They were fun.
Riley
Even if we had, like, the hardest rehearsal ever, the dance was just, like, super difficult and it was a hard day. We still had so much fun, and I laughed so much. You're, like, genuinely the funniest person ever.
Podcast Host
Oh, my gosh.
Riley
Like, just so fun to be around. So I feel like I'm just going to miss, like, seeing you every day. I need to, like, make sure that we see each other all, every single week.
Scott
I plan on still coming every day to Dancing with the Star set. Not getting my all Access pass back.
Riley
Or we could also rent a studio every day and let's just, like, make up our dances that we were gonna do.
Scott
That actually crossed my mind. I was like, yeah, we should just still put the dances online. Be like, this is what we would have done.
Podcast Host
Yeah, no one's stopping you guys. I'm game for it. I'll be tuning in if you do.
Riley
It, so that would be funny.
Scott
I should love that.
Podcast Host
But seriously, it's been great to see it. Go ahead. Sc. I know.
Scott
Oh, no, I was just gonna say I'm gonna miss it all. I'm gonna miss it all. Like, like, every detail of it. From, like, saying hi to security, walking into rehearsal, laughing with Riley, the tiktoks we always would make. And then, like, the live show days and making friends and, like, it's just really special experience.
Riley
Oh, I love you, Scott. You're the best.
Podcast Host
I think that's a perfect way to end it, guys. We love you too. You really were light in the ballroom. And it's gonna be, it's gonna be tough to see you not here every.
Scott
Week and six weeks a long time. Yeah, I glad I got to experience it. Like.
Podcast Host
Yeah, there's a lot you got to experience. But we'll miss you guys and we'll see you dance in the finale. That's one thing you can look forward to as well.
Scott
And I'll be locked.
Podcast Host
Oh, heck yeah.
Riley
You'll be the shining star.
Scott
Of course they're going to be like, we made a big mistake.
