Kohler Cast Iron Ambassador
When Kohler, global design leader and luxurious kitchen and bath products, asked me to be their ambassador for timeless, elegant, durable cast iron, I said, I'm in. Soon after, I was in their Kohler Wisconsin foundry watching molten iron, poured enamel applied by hand, and the beautiful finished pieces ready to ship. Since 1883, Kohler cast iron has been crafted by incredible artisans, and seeing it firsthand gave me a whole new appreciation for their craftsmanship. Now I am proud to lend my stamp of approval to my favorite Kohler cast iron products for their durability, beauty and enduring style. Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Welcome to Teen Beat. We are taking a week off for the holiday, which gives you a moment to catch up on some of the episodes you may have missed. As you know, every week I sit down with interesting people who've done interesting things, getting into how they've become who they are today, awkward teenage years and all. Here's a clip from our first guest ever and the man behind the Teen Beat theme song, it's Blink 182's Mark Hoppus. So what were those early Blink 182 shows like? Were they always? Did they always feel like a success?
Mark Hoppus
Yes, at least to us. I mean, when Tom and I are on stage, we really perform for one another almost more than we perform for the crowd. Like, if I can make Tom laugh, that's a good thing. If I can make Travis laugh, that's a big thing. And so Tom and I, we leave on tour and we start joking around and we try and say some outrageous stuff. But then the next night it gets a little further, and the next night gets a little further and the next. Like, I remember at one point we were on tour and our manager pulled us aside because we were on a tour called the Mark, Tom and Travis Show Tour. And Tom had this idea that if you took a vocal effect that pitches your voice down an octave, you can grab a microphone and you can act like you're Satan talking directly to the audience. And so I remember we were on tour one time, and after the show, our manager's like, hey, can I talk to you guys for a second? And he calls us into his office and he goes, I think you're taking a little far. We're like, what are you talking about? He's like, well, when Tom gets on the microphone, he acts like Satan and he says, hey, kids, I'm here. To your blood, it's a little too far.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
That is the line.
Mark Hoppus
That's the line. And we're like, okay, that makes sense.
Drew Lachey
Got it.
Mark Hoppus
Roger. Copy that. No, your blood. Got it.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
And if you want to laugh, check out the hilarious Nicole Byer. What is the most amount of trouble you ever got into? Like, in high school.
Danielle Fishel
Ooh, in high school? Was I still in high school? I got arrested at Old Navy. Which is crazy because they, like, pay you to take the clothes. But I love shoplifting. Still love it.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Okay, have to, have to. I'm assuming you have to force yourself to not do it.
Danielle Fishel
No, I still do it. If I go to gel, since I'm taking a treat, if there's a self checkout, I'm not scanning all of it. Yeah, I don't work here.
Kohler Cast Iron Ambassador
It's not.
Danielle Fishel
Also, Gelson's is so expensive.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Right.
Danielle Fishel
There is grapes I want. And they were $50. Are you kidding? But they went on sale for 14.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Still too expensive.
Danielle Fishel
They're K grapes. They're from Korea.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Oh, my gosh. K Beauty is now crossed over into K food. We have K pop, K Beauty, K, K fruit. Okay.
Danielle Fishel
But I think it was the summer in between my junior and senior year. No, it was senior year because my mom had passed away already. So I used to play a game with my friends Nick and John called grandma, what's in your bag? Meaning we would get back into Nick's car, and they go, grandma, what's in your bag? And I'd pull it off.
Yvette Nicole Brown
Stuff I stole.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Oh, my gosh.
Danielle Fishel
So I was in Old Navy. I think I was by myself. And, yeah, I was by myself, and I was just, like, doing my thing, taking things. And then I got stopped, and I was like, oh, no. And then I was being not cooperative.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Right, right, right.
Danielle Fishel
And I got them to say that they would release me to anyone over the age of 18. So I called my friend Caitlin, and I was like, can your older sister Courtney pick me up? And she was like, we're on our way. So then, Courtney, they're also white. So they were like, these aren't your parents.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
I guess I am.
Yvette Nicole Brown
These are.
Danielle Fishel
They're very young. Like, is 15. The other is 21. Like, what? So, yeah, she was able to sign me out of Old Navy jail.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
And one byproduct of having your own interview podcast is that it gives you an excuse to catch up with old friends. Here's a snippet with the great Kat Dennings. How did you then end up in a Hanson music video later on? And what.
Kat Dennings
What.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
What must have that been like for your little brain in your heart?
Kat Dennings
To this day? It is probably my best. My biggest accomplishment in my career. And I'm not joking.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Right? Right. It's a. That's a true statement for you.
Kat Dennings
This is called manifestation, folks.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yep, you're right. You. You were doing the Secret before anyone had heard of the Secret.
Kat Dennings
Secreting that since I was.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
How old?
Kat Dennings
What is this, 11? Yeah.
Rachel Leigh Cook
I don't know.
Yvette Nicole Brown
Okay.
Kat Dennings
I was Pinteresting before Pinterest. I was vision boarding my life, my ceiling. Isaac's on my ceiling.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
I love that.
Kat Dennings
Okay.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
I love that.
Kat Dennings
So, look, I Don't know how this happened, but once Twitter rip came along, you could follow these people that you never could have access to. I mean, this is good and bad, as we know. That's very. But you could suddenly, you could have access to the thoughts of these people. So, of course, I followed Hanson, Zach and Isaac or whoever was on there. And I think I had been quite vocal ever since I was doing interviews about how much I loved Hanson. Okay, listen, they're great.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yes, they are.
Kat Dennings
So I had been vocal about how much I loved them many times, and I think two Bro Girls was. Was. Was popular or something at that time. So they. They saw something about it, and I straight up got a. Got a dm.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yes.
Kat Dennings
Taylor Hansen. And he was like, hey, you ever. I was like, yeah, we'll do it for. I will pay you.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yeah, Yeah. I will do anything you want. I will clear the calendar.
Yvette Nicole Brown
I will.
Kat Dennings
Whatever. Yes. So I got to be in a handsome music video with my friend Nikki Reed, and it was one of the best days of my life. It was so surreal. It was so surreal. And I know that you know this, but, like, when you're a teen, I'm just gonna say girl, because I don't know what it's like to not be that.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yeah.
Kat Dennings
Like, your obsessions are so important.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yes.
Kat Dennings
Like, my love for Hanson at that time was. Was so, like, important to me, and it. They were a part of my daily existence in a really pure, precious, like, sweet way where.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yes.
Kat Dennings
You know, so as an adult, you kind of, like, your brain finally, like, closes up or whatever, and you.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yeah.
Kat Dennings
Like, being insane.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Right.
Kat Dennings
Or maybe not, in my case, less. A little less demented. Not. Not completely, but, like, you know, I don't have obsessions, and I don't feel the obsession that I did as a young kid.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yeah.
Kat Dennings
But something, like, opened up in that day where I was fully able to, like, close the circle and, like, recognize how, like, magical and crazy it was that, like, this person got to, like, be in a music video with them. That's just. It's just nuts.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
And I don't just sit with friends of today. I reunite with friends from the past. Here's someone I've known for almost 30 years. Rachel Leigh Cook.
Rachel Leigh Cook
You've opened up your diary to me. I will open up my memory diary to you.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Thank you.
Rachel Leigh Cook
Here's what I can. Here's what I can give young Danielle Ryder and I were. First of all, I probably did not understand him all of the ways that you did. He's the most romantic, like, Beautiful, like very deep. Know yourself toe deep. Like, just like I'm struck. I'm like the image of like the front of the Titanic.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Just like.
Rachel Leigh Cook
He just. He's such a beautiful. I'm not doing good words for this, but you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
I know what you mean. Yes.
Rachel Leigh Cook
Ryder's the most poetic soul we've ever met. Yes. And I remember this moment. He had, like, come to visit me in Italy, and there was this, like, field of sunflowers on the way to where we're going. And he tells the driver, stop the car. And he looks at me, puts out his hand, and I'm like, oh, no.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Oh, no, what are we doing?
Rachel Leigh Cook
We have to run into this floor.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
We have to go run through these flowers. Like really spooky.
Kat Dennings
Spiky.
Rachel Leigh Cook
Spiky looking flowers.
Mark Hoppus
Like a movie.
Rachel Leigh Cook
And I knew in that moment that I was just like, I'm not.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
I'm not the person for you.
Rachel Leigh Cook
What he's like, ultimately gonna need. And I tried, and we got a little way into that field, but I was just like. I don't know about this, but the thing that I can definitely give to young Danielle is that even though we were each other's first lot of things, I remember he one time made the. I feel bad sharing is lightly personal business, but I feel like he would be okay. He's very open and warm and accepting and loving to his younger self. I remember one time he said to me, like, if you weren't with me, you know, who would you want to be with? And I realized in retrospect that he was probably thinking I'd be like, oh, I don't know, James Dean if he was still alive or something like that. But instead I say the name of my ex boyfriend and he takes it on the chin. And I was like. I realized that I've probably answered wrong. And then I say, well, what about you? And he goes, danielle, what?
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Stop the presses.
Rachel Leigh Cook
Think I didn't remember.
Kat Dennings
Yeah.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
So then did you not like me after that?
Rachel Leigh Cook
No, of course I still like you.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Well, not now. I mean now, now, now I'm sure. I'm sure it's fine. But at the time, were you, like.
Rachel Leigh Cook
I remember directly trying to figure out if I was in trouble first because I was just like, ruh, Ro. Um. Which I was not. Respectful.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
No, no. But, yeah.
Mark Hoppus
Awkward time to ask this, but. Hey, did you download the trail map?
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yeah, no, I don't need to.
Mark Hoppus
I. I don't understand. You're trusting your signal out here.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
I'M trusting T Mobile. They have the best network and if we end up in bumtots nowhere, well, we've got T Satellite for backup.

Cal Penn
Hey everyone, it's Cal Penn, host of Irsay The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast I'm Sitting Down. Lily Chu, the author of the Audible original romantic comedy Just Kiss Already. It's a story about a forensic anthropologist who secretly writes mystery novels, an actress who adapts his book into a film, and what happens when a meme and a media tour collide with a slow burn romance. It's performed by Simu Lu and Philippa Hsu, and it is an absolute blast.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
When you actually hear the performance, you realize that other people are taking your words and what you thought was kind of a straightforward sentence like the cat in the corner is black. In my head it's the cat in the corner is black, not the dog, not the gerbil but someone else might say it. The cat in the corner is black. That's always fascinating to me how they just bring in all these different nuances and really make it fun and interesting and distinctive.

Me slow when network is busy. See terms. It wouldn't be teen beat if we didn't have a boy bander. Here's a clip with my vacation chaperone, 98 degrees. Drew Lachey. Thank you for doing the show. I think this is now at least the second time you've been forced to hang out with me. The first time being in Cancun when I went to visit Lance. And then the minute I got there, Lance and the rest of the NSYNC boys left to do a random new opportunity to perform a show somewhere. And I was basically solo in Cancun and Lance said, here, it's no problem. I'll just set you up with the 98 Degrees guys. They're the greatest. And you'll just hang out with them. And I literally just followed you guys around for like at least 48 hours.
Drew Lachey
Yeah, there was some random booze cruise in there somewhere. And so there was. I don't, I don't even remember what we were down there for, but yeah, those were.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
It was spring break.
Drew Lachey
Well, yes. We weren't supposed to remember it. Yeah, no, it was a, it was a blast. You know, those, those opportunities, so many of them came along and it's when you look back on it, like, there are so. There was so much that was just condensed into those, you know, couple years. It's. It's really kind of this crazy whirlwind of a ride.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Do you remember then ever feeling like, why did Lance just pawn this girl off on us?
Mark Hoppus
Did you.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Did you ever. Did you ever wonder that you guys. If so, you never let on. I have told everyone I've ever spoken to about you guys, about how incredibly kind and nice you were, because you just took me in like I was one of your family members. And you made sure I never walked back to my hotel alone. You made sure I always had plans for dinner. Like anything you guys were doing. You guys just made sure I knew I was invited.
Drew Lachey
Well, it was either stare at the other three schmucks that are in the group or look at you. So it was like, what was. I mean, you. You were an upgrade to the other three guys. And I'm sure. Me? Me? You know, No, I think we just, you know, we're guys from Ohio, so.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah, you're.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
You're gentlemen.
Drew Lachey
Yeah. You want to take. Make sure everybody's taken care of, Especially if a friend says, hey, you know, this is somebody that's important to me. Look, look out for her, then. You're gonna look out for her, you know?
Rachel Leigh Cook
Yeah.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
We ran into each other at a Janet Jackson concert, which, honestly, is where I'd like to meet everyone in my life moving forward. Check out my talk with the very talented Yvette Nicole Brown.
Yvette Nicole Brown
When I was in seventh grade, it was this guy I really liked. I thought he was the cutest thing I'd ever seen. Now, I will not say his name because I do still know him. Okay. I won't say his name, but I thought he was great. And there was a girl friend of mine. She's now a friend, but she was really mean to me on this particular day.
Rachel Leigh Cook
Okay.
Yvette Nicole Brown
She used to date this guy.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Date Exactly. When you're 12. Yeah. They once looked at each other across the.
Yvette Nicole Brown
They once held hands at recess. But she used to date him, and they had broken up, and she knew that I thought he was super duper cute. And so one day she came up to me and she said, so and so likes you. And I said, no. She said, yeah, he likes you, and I think you should write him a note and ask him if he likes you too, and you should give it to him tomorrow. And I was like, oh, my God, he likes me. Like, I never thought he would like me. So I'M talking to my friends, and they're like, okay, well, you should wear this shirt. And one of my friend let me borrow her. One of my friends let me borrow her little earrings. I remember I had this black and white. I'll never forget the outfit. Black and white striped shirt with these poofy. It was the 80s, right?
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yeah, right.
Yvette Nicole Brown
And she gave me these spot. These plastic spiral earrings that were also black and white. So I'm ready. I got the outfit. Penmanship is on point. I'm writing the note. Dear so and so I. I really like you too, you know. Would you like my number? I don't even know what I put. The note was a blur because it was so traumatic. So I get to school and I have lunch. I either had lunch first or study hall first. I had lunch first, then study hall. So I go to lunch, and he also has lunch first. And then study hall. He's there. He is gorgeous across the room. It's my moment. So I walk up. He's talking to his friends. I walk up, I give him the note, Danielle. I give him the note, listeners. And he said, what's this? And I said. And he didn't say, like, what's this? He said, what's this? And I said, you know, oh, that's so confident.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
She really. You never for a second did you think. Did you think maybe she's doing something to screw me over.
Yvette Nicole Brown
Oh, no. I thought, this is. This is a lovely thing she's doing. She sees the love is supposed to happen, and she's about to happen. So he opened the note in front of me, read the note. He laughed at the note. He showed the note to the friends with him, and then he passed the note around the lunchroom. And the bottom line was, how dare she think that I would ever. So I, of course, am face on the ground. I scurry out of there. I've never scurried in my life, but
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
I scurried, scurried that day.
Yvette Nicole Brown
I scurried out of there. And I got to the bathroom because I didn't want to go to Study Hall 2. I went to the bathroom, pulled my feet up on these things, locked the door, in the stall, just like, okay, what just happened? Like, I couldn't process. I was 12. I couldn't process that level of cruelty. I did not understand because, again, I'm the one that's like, everybody can sit with me. So I don't understand going out of your way to harm.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Correct.
Yvette Nicole Brown
I've never understood. So I'm in there and then people are coming in, girls are coming in, and the only topic is me.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Everyone's laughing, and because your feet are up, they don't even know you're there. So they care. They're just still talking about you.
Yvette Nicole Brown
You're hear, you believe Eyvette was dumb enough to think, blah, blah, blah, just, oh, my God, he would never like her. I can't believe I'd be. I die. I'm so embarrassed for her. So I then have to go to study hall, because lunch is over. I have to go to study hall, check in. I get in study hall and I just put my head down on my desk and I'm just like, I'm, I'm crying. It's bad. The girl that did this to me comes and sits in front of me and she leans down and she goes, I can't believe you thought he would ever like you. How dumb are you?
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
And finally, fresh off the return of Malcolm in the Middle, I chatted with Frankie Muniz, who may just be the most interesting person I've ever talked to. Here's a clip. What age did racing become an interest for you? You said you were always interested in cars, but when did the idea of racing them?
Frankie Muniz
I, I, same thing. I remember being a kid, I. My family did not like racing, so that's not like I went to races with my dad or they didn't watch it on TV, but I always woke up at like, 4 or 5 in the morning, even when I was 5, 6 years old.
Yvette Nicole Brown
Yeah.
Frankie Muniz
And, you know, I go in the living room and I put on the TV. And on the weekends, the Formula One races would be on at like, 5am because it's, you know, they're in Europe or whatever. And I remember watching those. And I watched the IndyCar races and I watched NASCAR races and I remember loving it. But, like, it never crossed my mind that I ever would be a race car driver because, like, it's like saying you want to be an astronaut. Like, yeah, it's a dream. But, like, how do you, how do you do that? Like, right. You know, no one really does that, you know, So I actually, I thought about this the other day and I. And it was the first time I thought about it. The reason why I'm a race car driver is actually because of Bryan Cranston. And I don't think I've ever said this out loud to, like, on an interview.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Frankie Muniz
So he did. He and Chris Masterson, who played Francis on Malcolm, they got invited to do the Toyota Grand Prix of long beach pro celebrity race. And this was like, 2002 or 2003. And Brian came back from that, and he goes, it was the most incredible thing I've ever done in my life. And if you. Because he knew I loved cars. If they ever ask you, you have to say yes. He's a. But you have to be 18. I think I was 17 at the time. So the following year, they asked me. I was like, yeah, I'm gonna do it. And they send you out to, like, palmdale, and you, like, train at willow springs raceway for a few weeks. And it is a very serious. It's a pro celebrity race, but, like, it's very serious. You're still going.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
There's still a risk of death.
Frankie Muniz
Yes. 100. Like, yeah. And I just remember loving it, but I didn't think I'd be good at it. But I ended up winning the race.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Oh, my gosh.
Frankie Muniz
But that feeling. I mean, I've experienced a lot of cool things in my life. That feeling of crossing the finish line first is unlike anything I've ever experienced, because, like, as an actor, I could dedicate my life to a role or to a job and put in what I think is the best performance I've ever done in my life. And people see it, they're like, it was okay, right? Some people love it. Some people hate it. So, you know where in racing, if you're the best, you win, and if you're not, you don't. You know, it's right there, you know? And I've never had something that I've been a part of that. That's the case.
Teen Beat Host (Danielle Fishel)
Yeah.
Frankie Muniz
So winning. That was amazing. A pro team approached me after that race and was like, hey, we'd. We'd love to just put you in the car just for fun. Like, just for a test. Just come down, fly to Houston. We'll put you in the race car. You can have two fun days, and that'll be it. I was like, okay. And I remember sitting in the race car, they were molding my seat because, like, they molded your body, and I was trembling. I was so scared because I was like, I don't know what I'm doing. Like, I have no idea what I'm doing. And cut to the end of the two days. I was faster than their, like, professional driver. And they were like, we didn't really think anything of this, but, like, you. You should do this. Like, what's your experience? I go the pro celebrity race in long beach, you know, and so they signed me to a two year development deal and the next thing I knew like a month later, not knowing the rules of what the race of the racing or what I was doing. Kohler Cast Iron Ambassador
When Kohler, global design leader in luxurious kitchen and bath products, asked me to be their ambassador for timeless, elegant, durable cast iron, I said I'm in. Soon after, I was in their Kohler Wisconsin foundry watching molten iron poured enamel applied by hand and the beautiful finished pieces ready to ship. Since 1883, Kohler cast iron has been crafted by incredible artisans and seeing it firsthand gave me a whole new appreciation for their craftsmanship. Now I'm proud to lend my stamp of approval to my favorite Kohler Cast Iron products for their durability, beauty and enduring style. Shop my curated pics@kohler.com as the Kohler Cast Iron Ambassador, I say long live Cast Iron.
