And this week we hear from Claire, who found a new way to be embarrassed for being in bands.

Okay, this is a very embarrassing story. My name is Claire and when I was, let's say 15 years old, I still had a tooth that I didn't lose and it needed to fall out. And I played the trumpet in my school band because we all had to play an instrument. And I was playing the trumpet in our holiday program concert in front of a big crowd. And as I was playing the trumpet, I knew I was playing the right notes and following everything correctly for the song. And all of a sudden I start hearing the wrong noises and I'm wondering what am I doing wrong? And then I'm like, wait, something's in my trumpet. And all of a sudden, there goes my loose tooth flying out my trumpet. It was so embarrassing. So I had to run off the stage and I couldn't find my tooth. And it was even more embarrassing to say I was still losing a tooth at that age, but for it to come out of my even worse.

[Alan Bersten]

Honestly, it's impressive. I'm impressed.

[Danielle Fishel]

Claire, were you worried about the tooth fairy?

[Kerry Brownstein]

Why?

[Danielle Fishel]

Did you feel the need to find your tooth?

[Alan Bersten]

Yeah, I feel like at that point you just pretend it never happened.

Just ignore it. Just Latooth lives where it lives now.

And there's so many. You can say that you knocked your tooth with the trumpet.

Oh my gosh. A tooth fell out. Not my baby tooth that I still had.

Even if it is small. But no one's gonna find it.

No one's gonna find it. No one's gonna touch it. Everyone's gonna be like, oh, I see

a tooth on the ground. No, my. I would say the most embarrassing thing that happened to me, I didn't even do. I was invited to like a party for the first time in high school. Yeah, okay. And like, definitely did not fit in well. And they. This, they bullied me. Guys, they pushed me into the pool.

What?

[Danielle Fishel]

Were you fully clothed? It wasn't A pool party.

[Alan Bersten]

It was not a pool party. I turned it into a pool party, I think.

Did other people then jump in?

Well, we were tour mates this past year on the big Dancing with the Stars live tour. And that opens up an entirely new set of ways to potentially embarrass yourself.

Yes.

I know myself doing the same routine every night, barely remembering which city you're in. Do you remember anything in particular from tours that felt like your tooth flying through the trumpet moment?

[Alan Bersten]

Oh, for sure. I mean, there's so many. And on tour, it's the best because it's like. It's a fun environment.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yes. Everyone's super supportive.

[Alan Bersten]

Exactly. And the thing about, you know, both the show and the tour are both unbelievable. There's no stress on tour.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Alan Bersten]

No one's going home.

[Danielle Fishel]

Right. No one's being judged that fast.

[Alan Bersten]

Exactly. Just by the audience. But that's it.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah, that's it.

My first tour, I was actually with so youo Think youk Can Dance and I ripped my pants. And I've ripped my pants a lot on tour, so I feel like that's a bigger issue we gotta get into. I ripped my pants. And I was like, oh, I'm gonna turn around and show everyone that I ripped my pants.

[Danielle Fishel]

Cause it'll be funny.

[Alan Bersten]

Embrace it. Everyone was like, what the hell are you doing? I was like, I got off. I was like, yeah, probably shouldn't have done that. That was not the right choice. Cause I just, like, flashed everyone. Yeah.

[Danielle Fishel]

Were you wearing underwear?

[Alan Bersten]

Yeah, of course. Thank God.

[Danielle Fishel]

I was like, what, did you forget? You weren't enough underwear on.

But there's so many times that you, like, fall on stage.

Oh, yeah. I saw a video before I went on tour. I looked up videos. Cause I was like, I want to see what some of these tours have looked like. And one of them came up, and I don't remember what happened, but there's

a really good one of me and Lindsey Arnold.

[Danielle Fishel]

You and Lindsey Arnold? And you fell just flat on your feet.

[Alan Bersten]

It was really cool. I felt like Shaq, you know, when he falls down and there's, like, the thing like, he can't get up. I was dragging Lindsay, and I don't know if I tripped on her foot or what happened. And I just brought her down with me. Oh, my gosh. And then I quickly pushed her up, and I was like, oh, God. Keep up. It was really cool how I recovered, but it was. There's videos of people like, oh. I was like, yep, definitely did not look natural.

[Danielle Fishel]

The funniest was that when I saw you next, I said, oh, my gosh, Alan, I saw that video of you from tour. And he goes, which video of me? And I go, the one where you fell. He goes, no, I fall in a bunch of times. I don't know which one.

[Alan Bersten]

You're falling.

[Danielle Fishel]

And I was like, oh, but you're right. I mean, now that I've been on tour.

[Alan Bersten]

Yeah.

[Danielle Fishel]

It is impossible to do that many shows, and not for everyone. The amount of times we mess up in a show.

[Alan Bersten]

I'm trying to think now. I don't think I had any bad ones this last tour.

[Danielle Fishel]

You were on me.

No, there was one where me and Daniella had a mismatch or a miss grab misgrab.

And then what happened?

She kind of rolled to the ground, and we got right back up.

Like, if you don't know, you don't know. It wasn't like a, oh, I fell or I dropped her or anything.

[Danielle Fishel]

How long does it take you to get used to not being able to make a face when, like. Cause for me, when I would mess up, it's. The very next thing that happens is I go, yeah. And Pasha would say to me, nobody knows until you make that face.

[Alan Bersten]

Yeah, I would say, nobody knows 100% until you make that face. I think it depends. Like, if I'm doing something by myself and I fall, I'm gonna make the face. Of course, if I'm on the show or if it's, like, something important. Yeah, no, you won't know. And I feel like no one would know your dance.

[Danielle Fishel]

And that's what Pasha would say. Pasha would be like, I could have told you to do that. I could have. Like, it could have been a thing. And I'm like, but I literally don't know how to make my face. Not do that.

[Alan Bersten]

Yeah. I think it's just because you're, like, the scary Part is when you're on the TV show and you mess up, you're like, yeah, am I gonna be able to get back on?

[Sam Jae]

Right.

[Alan Bersten]

And I think that's where muscle memory comes in. And it's like, trust yourself.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Alan Bersten]

And, like, your partner's there for you.

[Ari Chambers]

Totally.

[Alan Bersten]

But, yeah, no, that is definitely. I think you just gotta, like. It's just trust knowing that you know it. And on tour, it's, you know, the tambourines. I feel like everyone messed up 100% a bunch of times, but it's such a fun moment that it's like, who cares?

[Danielle Fishel]

Exactly.

[Alan Bersten]

There's so many times Val's just like, oh, my gosh.

[Claire (Listener)]

Val and the.

[Danielle Fishel]

Val and the Tambourines is one of my favorite things ever.

[Alan Bersten]

So it's like, there's moments where it's like, whatever.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Alan Bersten]

And there's moments where you're like, you don't want to mess up. Obviously.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yes, obviously. There are very important moments, especially where you do lifts. Yes. It's like, okay. You can't take your chances when you're lifting somebody in the air. Did you like doing tour? You did over 90 shows, and I can't imagine how anyone did that.

[Alan Bersten]

Yeah, we did 97 shows this tour, which was a lot. I think everyone was kind of feeling it. I will say, I love it.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Alan Bersten]

And I have Emma on tour. I have my dog Jeff on tour.

[Danielle Fishel]

I know Jeff.

[Alan Bersten]

I know he's the best. So it's like, to me, it's like I get to do what I love in front of thousands of fans every night who love the show, who love us. It's truly a dream come true.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Alan Bersten]

So even though it can get really tough by the end of it, and, like, your bodies are hurting, to me, touring is one of the best things. Cause you get to connect with that audience. And again, there's no stress.

[Danielle Fishel]

I wouldn't say there's no stress. You just mean there's no stress of being voted off.

[Alan Bersten]

There's no stress of, like, having to create new dances and getting voted off and having to, like, the competitive part of Dancing with the Stars.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Alan Bersten]

Like, the competition part is one of the hardest parts.

[Danielle Fishel]

You're right.

[Alan Bersten]

You know, the dancing of it and learning a dance and being in the rehearsals is almost fun.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Alan Bersten]

You know? Yeah. It's a lot of hard work, but it's not scary.

[Claire (Listener)]

Yeah.

[Alan Bersten]

And I think when you're scared, that's the hardest part of anything. And on tour, I feel like you're not scared.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah. You're not Afraid of anything.

[Alan Bersten]

Yeah. So, yeah, it's very stressful to live on a bus and this. But, like, you know, you never have to cook.

[Danielle Fishel]

I know, but that's hard too, to not have your own space. Space. Your own comforts of home. Even as far as, like, taking care of your body, you're always like, is there a gym? Can I go to the gym? You know, and then trying to figure out, like, when do I get up and do I explore the city? And for the first couple of months, it's freezing everywhere.

[Alan Bersten]

That's also the hardest part is, like, when we're touring on the east coast in January and February and it's negative 5 degrees.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah. And you're in and out of hotels occasionally. And now you're dragging your luggage occasionally. Occasionally. There's an occasional hotel here and there.

[Alan Bersten]

No, it's very tough on the body.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah.

[Alan Bersten]

But to me, I'm like, it's so rewarding.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yeah. Yeah. I can see how it pays off.

[Alan Bersten]

For sure. I love the tour.

[Danielle Fishel]

I mean, trust me, I loved it too.

[Alan Bersten]

You're coming back next year.

I wish. And that was one of the things that I loved so much, is that I think it was so easy for me to love every second of it because I was like, this is my one and only chance. They're not gonna ask me next year.

Yep. Now, I mean, this is one you could have a bone to pick with me here because I did have a 99 year old man on the ballroom floor and he did not dance.

Yes. Which again, I loved it. The nostalgia of that.

But some other people, like, they were like, oh, you made a strong choice by putting Lisa Ann in your dance. I was like, they told us to. They told me to. I'm so glad we did. I loved it.

But I'm like, they should have been like, hey, you really took the challenge and you. Yeah, you did it.

Was having Lisa Anne as a part of that dance one of the inspirations for your dance you did on tour with Jenna and.

No, no, no. But I will say it was awesome having Lisa Anne.

You know, first of all, she was in the audience every single week.

Color coordinated. She would ask Elaine what color her dress was and she would show up in it. She was also filming Abbott elementary at the time.

So she was like telling them, like, guys, I have a heart out. I need a beat. Which is insane.

So cute.

But it was so nice having her there. I know Elaine really benefited from having that support there.

But having Lisa in the dance was just awesome.

You know, like, it honestly made the week, like really carefree.

Even though it was even more stressful. Cause there was another person. But you could just see Elaine and Lisa having so much fun that I was just like, oh, my God.

Yeah. You can tell their friendship really lightens them up and makes them.

And it was great. So I'm glad I did that for dedication night.

I did because I got to do a Sabrina Carpenter song. And obviously, yeah, that was very fun for me. But in general, as a theme, it was not my favorite.

See, I kind of liked it. Cause it was the first time we did it. I mean, none of my opinion matters, but like, it would have been like, when you do some, it's hard to qualify. What is a TikTok night? Like a TikTok song.

You know, so I feel like if they do it again, they should try to do like more just narrow it down. Narrow it down. But then it's like if you're not on TikTok, you don't know what it is. So it's hard. But I think it was a. It was a cool night to do random music.

Yeah. You know, and it allows you to be on TV and learn this thing and then mature a little bit and grow up. And so I feel like Juniors was such an incredible show. But yeah, no, Isabella, my niece, she's so great and she's really loving it and I hope the show is around for. I think she's 13 now, so five more years for her to be able to be a pro.

[Danielle Fishel]

If you could give her one piece of advice, what would you give her?

[Alan Bersten]

Good question. Honestly, trust yourself and do it cause you love it, you know, and honestly, that do it cause you love it. I learned from Sky Brown, like, and it's so simple and it's so true. Just do things because you enjoy them, don't do them for a goal. You know, you might have a goal in mind, but don't make that the reason why you're doing something. Enjoy the thing that you're doing. And if something good comes from it, great. And if it doesn't, great, you're still doing what you love. So I would say to anyone, if you're dancing and your goal is to be on Dancing with the Stars, if you don't get that goal, at least you're still enjoying dance. So do it because you love it.
