Hey, Daniel. My name's Hillary. So, thankfully this didn't happen at school, but I was in. In Disneyland back when they had the Rainforest Cafe and I was with my mom. We were at dinner and I went to the restroom and I got locked inside. I could not get this door to open. I briefly considered crawling under, like, on the floor, but I wasn't gonna fit. My mother ended up. So I called her and I told her what was happening. My mom told the waitress what happened. She obviously looked at my mom like we were both crazy. And then I did eventually free myself, but not before the lady in there decided that she didn't want to help. She just wanted to laugh. Anyway, that's. That was my teen story.

Do you have either of you ever been to a Rainforest Cafe?

[Mark Hoppus]

I know the one she's talking about.

Oh, you do?

In Downtown Disney. Okay, I know exactly which one. I'm a Disney frequent.

[Dan]

I think I fly to the Rainforest Cafe when we were in Orlando at the is. They still have one at Disney World, do they? I'm pretty sure.

[Mark Hoppus]

Yeah.

[Dan]

I think I went.

[Mark Hoppus]

I took the one out here. Yeah. I didn't get stuck in the bathroom, though.

[Danielle Fishel]

Oh, that's good. You managed to. Yeah, yeah, I. I got stuck in the bathroom when I was a real little kid and my. I screamed bloody murder. My mom was just outside the door, and I tried for one second to open the door, couldn't do it, and just went to immediate 100. And my mom was calm down. I was like, two. I could definitely crawl under. Didn't think of that. Just screamed. So at least I wasn't there. I do want to ask you guys, what do you think the biggest difference is between adult grown man Dan and Doug making music? And just outta Agora High School Dan and Doug in the studio.

Probably overthinking.

[Mark Hoppus]

Yeah, I was gonna say overthinking. The good thing, I think this is a compliment to us at this moment is that high school Dan and Doug writing music and all the chemicals in our brain, all the dopamine, and everything is going because of what's happening right here. We're pushing buttons on the four track and we're playing, and everything's exciting and we want to show our friends, but even then, it's just exciting in the moment. You know, hearing our demos in the car on the way back from, you know, wherever, like, that was so exciting. And then somewhere along the line, it becomes methodical. Like, it becomes like, well, is this. Is this. Is this lyric relatable yeah. Is this blah, blah, blah, you know, and. And ironically, it takes the one thing that probably made you successful out of it, and that's the honesty and the authenticity of who you are. And it becomes like writing by committee.

Yeah.

[Mark Hoppus]

Same thing, like, is that maybe you should put another guitar part on top of this thing. And you're like, why? You know, and I feel like we've gone through that gambit and tried to recreate, you know, sounds and successes that weren't totally in our control in the first place. And I think you kind of have to go through it to eventually let go of it all. And which brings me back to the newer stuff. It kind of just goes like, you know, this is fun. I like doing it. And although it's not as completely free as Dan And I at 17 and 18, it feels a lot freer to me than a lot of previous music that we put out that felt like we would do what we want and then either we would self censor or somebody would come in and be like, maybe it's too long. Cut this and blah, blah, blah. And what do you mean by this? I don't get what you're saying. Like, that's only relatable to you and not to like, who is this song for?

Right.

And I kind of feel like now it's like, you guys, it's for us, it's for us. It'll find its audience, but we're not going out looking for the audience, you know?

Exactly. I felt like I stumbled across the

1 out of 100 that's like, you guys suck. Yeah, that's the one that's going to stick. So why, why even bother? Like it's a, it's a fruitless endeavor.

There we are. Back to saliency. You know, like huba stinks. You know, it sticks, Topanga, it sticks. Those negative comments, they're the ones that stick. So I'm really happy that our friend who sent in the, the audio clip mentioned Disneyland because you mentioned that you are quite a Disneyland repl. Yeah. And if I don't bring this up, my researchers will kill me. Are you rockin Space Mountain? Well, I grew up in original. Before Calabasas I was Yorba Linda. Okay, So I grew up. My grandfather lived close enough to Disneyland that we could go out there and watch the fireworks every night. And yeah, I grew up going to Disneyland. Now I have kids of my own who are age appropriate for Disneyland. But I try to avoid it cause they're still pretty small and it ruins my life to spend time in lines.

There's a lot of people there.

So many people.

There's no non crowded days anymore.

None. It used to be that you could go in February or October. There were windows, there were no more.

And I would have forgotten. Honestly, if I don't get reminded every few years, somebody will send me like a clip like, did you guys know that Let it out was on that thing? And I'm like, no, I didn't know that. That's pretty cool. Shouldn't I get free passes for that? Or like.

Exactly.

Come on. Dis. They're so cheap. You would think.

Listen, when I was on an ABC show, we got a certain number. It was enough that it felt like it was endless. We had certain number of times we could go and bring big parties with us and we got to go for free. And now I am a director for the Disney Channel and I get zero.

[Mark Hoppus]

What's up with that?

Zero.

[Mark Hoppus]

And they probably are more profitable now than they've ever been.

Yeah, I know.

Are you a frequenter, Dan? Do you like Disneyland?

I grew up going there all the time. Would drive from Calabasas with my family all the time. And I am not into it. Yeah. I'm not into big groups of people in lines and waiting. We've recently, over the last couple years, have done the Orlando. Orlando, right? Yeah. Epcot, the Disney World. They have like a lot of bands from like us and Yellow Card and Newfound Glory and Bowling for Soup.

[Danielle Fishel]

Yep.

[Dan]

Do these like two days weekend shows. Yeah, weekend shows there. And it. That's been cool because they put us up there in their resorts.

[Danielle Fishel]

Right.

[Dan]

They. They give us a ton of passes so we could have our families come out.

[Hillary]

Great.

[Danielle Fishel]

That's nice.

[Dan]

But every. It wasn't until this last time we did it that I went out and walked around like a little bit and I was like, yeah, I'm. I mean, I.

Plus the weather sucks.

[Dan]

Yeah.

Like a thousand degrees and humid.

I know.

[Dan]

I mean, my memories of it are great. Are amazing. Yeah. I'll come across photos or something, you know, from that time. But I happen to go there one year on Christmas and it was the most crowded I've ever seen. Disneyland.

[Danielle Fishel]

It was really.

Yeah.

I wonder if Thanksgiving is crowded there.

[Mark Hoppus]

Probably, you know. Probably. I have nothing but amazing childhood memories and early teen memories of Disneyland. And then like anything there's like a window where you don't really go as much. Dan and I were camp counselors at the ymca.

[Danielle Fishel]

Oh, cool.

[Mark Hoppus]

So we took some kids there over the summers and stuff.

[Dan]

That's right. Yeah. So we went all.

[Mark Hoppus]

We would go there with Kids and let them run around and here, meet at the statue at three o' clock. And then once you're there, all ten of you here. Okay. Meet back here at five o'.

[Cal Penn]

Clock.

[Mark Hoppus]

You know, that kind of stuff.

[Hillary]

Right.

[Mark Hoppus]

Um, but then there was like a lull until I had my kids and

then

it turned back on and honestly, even stronger than it was when I was a kid. Really, like, reliving it through my kids has been so much fun. Like, it's crazy. Like, I like Disneyland in my adulthood, like more than I did in my childhood simply because of my kids.

Yeah, my kids. I think you either get a kid that is into it or. Or you don't.

[Mark Hoppus]

I think I forced it on them. They didn't were like, hey, I want to go Disneyland. Like, I have. I have video or, you know, images of my son, who's 12 now when he's like a month old.

[Danielle Fishel]

Right?

[Mark Hoppus]

Okay, two months old. And we're on Winnie the Pooh, you know. Oh my God, that. Now think about that. The first time I took my son to Disneyland, I was wearing him like in a Bjorn, you know, and he up the back. And by the way, I tell him the story every time we go there. I'm like, dude, right here.

By right here.

[Mark Hoppus]

It is right here. Do you realize at 10 o' clock at night, whenever this place is shutting down, I was like, oh, dude, he pooped. And then it started coming up, up his back and onto me. And I had to like, put you down on a bench and like strip you naked and wipe you full bath with everything and just wipe a full thing of poop. Wipe. Just like.

[Danielle Fishel]

And by the way, you had tons of changes of clothes for him. You didn't think about the change of clothes for you. Because that's what happens. You're like, oh, they're gonna poop themselves. You don't ever think they're gonna poop.

[Mark Hoppus]

Maybe I did, maybe I did. But I remind him that all the time. So if he happens to hear this at any point. Can you believe that?

Can you believe it? We have a great picture of us at Chin Chin holding our. Our newborn. And I remember saying to Jensen, take a picture of us. And as he took the picture, just in the picture, our son is L. And I'm like, I can literally point

to this photo and be an honest reaction.
