Interviewer
here is take me well each week I ask my listeners to send over an embarrassing story from their lives in hopes that their shame and possible repression can make us all feel more human.
Co-host
So this week we are hearing from
Interviewer
Leah, who had an unforgettable school trip.
Leah
Hey, it's Leah from Pennsylvania. I wasn't going to share anything, but I heard a previous story that reminded me of this time in high school. I was on a French class trip to Europe and the first full day there, we were getting on the metro and I was the last of the group to get on. And in the middle of boarding, somehow the door closed on me, left a nice big bruise on my arm and my teachers had to yank me and my bag out of the door. After that, anytime we would get on a metro, the teachers would usher me to the front to make sure I was the first to get on. And then the next day I threw up on the bus. No good rhyme or reason. I love to travel, don't get motion sickness, so whatever. And the bus had to stop to clean. And I took the opportunity to go to the store and get water and Tic Tacs. And of course, nobody chose to sit with me on the bus for the rest of those two weeks.
Co-host
Oh my gosh, we're all human.
Co-host/Guest
Oh.
Co-host
Hearing Leah's story did make me think
Interviewer
about how much traveling you have done
Co-host
all over the world.
Interviewer
Do you get motion sick? Do you, do you travel well on a bus?
Maya
What kind of bus?
Co-host/Guest
This is the question.
Maya
Tour buses are heaven, okay? You can get the best sleep on a tour bus.
Co-host
Yeah, I did sleep very well on
Interviewer
the Dancing with the Stars tour, but I only had the little bunk. You know, they have that big nice room, but I think it's more bumpy back there.
Maya
Honestly, I prefer the bunks versus the bed in the back because it rocks you to sleep anything in the back. You know, you're probably bouncing up in that up and down. Sprinters are Horrible. For traveling. Okay. You're belly flopping.
Co-host/Guest
Even if they have, like, a little bed, right? Or the seat turns into a bed. He did not want to do that on tour.
Maya
Okay, Horrible. But tour buses are actually designed for sleep. Yeah, but I do prefer, like, tight spaces versus big spaces.
Co-host
Me too. I love my little bunker. Dancing with the Stars.
Maya
I love it.
Interviewer
Oh, it was so great. I'd, like, get myself in there. I also sleep a little like a vampire. Anyway, I sleep on my side with
Co-host
my arms up like this over my shoulders.
Interviewer
And I didn't move. But I didn't need my white noise machine because the sound of the ground underneath you is your white noise. You get to fully black out that little window in there. And only being 5:1, I got to keep a, like a suitcase that my
Co-host
feet still had plenty of room.
Maya
I was wondering for the guys that might be like six one and up. Well, how does that work for them on tour?
Interviewer
I know.
Co-host
I don't.
Interviewer
I don't think the bunks could be possibly as comfortable for them unless they have custom length buses. Okay, so you travel well on tour bus. Do you get motion sick at all?
Maya
So I do get motion sick mostly on boats.
Interviewer
Okay.
Maya
You know, if it's like a cruise ship of some sort or like a yacht.
Co-host/Guest
So Kim and I did something called Girls Trip.
Boost Mobile Announcer
Okay.
Co-host/Guest
A reality show, and I got sick.
Maya
Now, fortunately, I did not vomit because Chili was actually on the show, too, and she passed me. I think it was ginger ale or soda. Okay, good. It did help.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Maya
But I forgot to take Dramamine. You know, But I do get motion sickness if I'm working on my laptop or a phone as a traveler in a car.
Interviewer
Yep.
Maya
Bad news.
Interviewer
Do you have the dots on your phone now? Have you seen that?
Co-host
Okay, good.
Interviewer
My husband gets motion sick sometimes, and those dots have been a game changer for him when I drive.
Maya
Oh, I have to share.
Co-host/Guest
This motion sickness story is hilarious.
Co-host
Yes, please.
Co-host/Guest
Yes, it is on a boat, but it's not a yacht.
Co-host
Okay?
Co-host/Guest
It is. It's not a cruise ship. So here's the rugged girl. Okay, so I have a little show in Hawaii, right? It's an intimate show, and I'm doing this, like, I don't know, reward for fans.
Boost Mobile Announcer
Okay?
Co-host/Guest
So I bring fans along for this experience, and I book a.
Maya
A. What is it called?
Co-host/Guest
A cage dive with sharks.
Audiobook Narrator
What?
Co-host/Guest
Right. Okay, so we go cage diving. I've always wanted to do it.
Maya
I've seen it on National Geographic.
Co-host
You go cage diving with fans in Hawaii?
Co-host/Guest
Yeah, with sharks. Great.
Maya
White sharks.
Odoo Announcer
What?
Co-host/Guest
Yes.
Maya
So I have a fear of dark water because of an experience when I was like 8 years old in the Bahamas and I.
Co-host/Guest
Dark water, like, yeah, I have to
Maya
get over my fears. Wait, what did the fin do? It touched you? It swam in between my mother and I when we were like playing water volleyball or. Anyhow, I couldn't even get in my
Co-host/Guest
above ground pool when I was 8 years old when we got back to
Maya
Maryland because, you know, I couldn't see the bottom because of that one experience. Anyhow, fast forwarding to just like maybe 2014, 2015, something like that. I'm in Hawaii doing a show. Fans were going out on this boat
Co-host/Guest
for this shark diving excursion to get
Maya
over my fear, right?
Co-host
You're like, listen, I'm a twofer. I want to do a fan experience. I need to get over my fear cage diving with great whites in Hawaii.
Co-host/Guest
Who wants to go? Right?
Maya
So, my goodness, we're all in the cage. I have a GoPro and everything. And you can actually hear whales at the bottom of the cage. You know, it's wonderful. But that cage is moving back and forth, back and forth. And so I go back on, you know, I try to get back on the boat, but I don't make it back on the boat. And so I have to literally step up one notch. The cage is. Of course, the top of the cage is above water. So I'm leaning over the cage to vomit.
Co-host/Guest
All of a sudden all these sharks come out.
Co-host
This feels like a feeding frenzy opportunity.
Co-host/Guest
Oh, my goodness. Oh, oh, my goodness. Yeah.
Maya
And so we experienced lots of sharks surrounding us. Yeah. For the first time, I think I got over my fear.
Interviewer
Were you the first person to go into the cage? Were there multiple people in the cage with you at the same time?
Maya
I think I was the first.
Co-host
Okay.
Maya
I think I might have been the third. Yes. There were multiple people. Oh, I think four max.
Interviewer
I wonder for those fans of yours
Co-host
who are like, gosh, I love her. Not sure I could do cage diving.
Maya
Oh, they signed up for it. They wanted to go.
Co-host
Oh, yeah. No, I'm thinking of the people who are like, I can't sign up for that. But boy, would I like to meet her, though.
Boost Mobile Announcer
So.
Odoo Announcer
Wow.
Co-host
I. I need to think outside the box for my fan experiences. I'm. I'm not thinking big enough. I'm just not. Oh, yeah, that's pretty amazing.
Maya
Pretty awesome, though. They're very peaceful creatures. I learned.
Leah
Okay.
Maya
Yeah, not like the movies.
Co-host/Guest
Okay.
Maya
Yeah.
Co-host/Guest
Certain parts of the world you can
Maya
actually free swim with them with no cage.
Interviewer
I'm good, I'm good.
Co-host
Thank you.
Audiobook Narrator
I am too.
Co-host
Yeah, okay. I'm good on that.
Maya
Than.

Kal Penn
hey everyone, it's Cal Penn, host of Irsay, The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast I'm sitting down with Lily Chu, the author of the Audible original romantic comedy Just Kiss Already. It's a story about a forensic anthropologist who secretly writes mystery novels, an actress who adapts his book into a film, and what happens when a meme and a media tour collide with a slow burn romance. It's performed by Simu Liu and Philippa Hsu, and it is an absolute blast.
Audiobook Narrator
When you actually hear the performance, you realize that other people are taking your words and what you thought was kind of a straightforward sentence like the cat in the corner is black. In my head it's the cat in the corner is black. Not the dog, not the gerbil. But someone else might say it, the cat in the corner is black. That's always fascinating to me how they just bring in all these different nuances and really make it fun and interesting and distinctive.

Talking about touring and all the different
Interviewer
ways you travel, do you always.
Co-host
I. I felt like on when I
Interviewer
was on the tour, showering in the venues is not always lovely. Do you also have to occasionally shower in venues or do you always have a nice hotel room you get to shower in?
Maya
It depends. But I don't care.
Co-host
You don't care?
Maya
I don't care. I mean I'm always prepared. Shower, shoes, toiletries.
Co-host/Guest
You're good.
Maya
I'm such a boy.
Co-host
You're like, I'm fine as long as I'm clean. When I get out, I'm happy.
Co-host/Guest
Yeah.
Maya
Okay, now I have to be showered to like really feel like I can get a good night's rest. Same and feel great when I go to sleep, but I don't really care where I shower.
Co-host/Guest
Okay.
Co-host
Yeah.
Interviewer
There were just a few venues I was in where I was like, this is.
Co-host
I could be, I could, I could
Interviewer
be enjoying this more.
Co-host/Guest
Yeah.
Maya
White locker rooms and all of that stuff that doesn't bother me.
Co-host/Guest
You're used to It, I've done like, I've seen rest stops.
Co-host
Okay.
Co-host/Guest
Like, okay.
Maya
But I've also like stayed in villages where we shower with buckets. Oh, yeah.
Interviewer
Okay.
Maya
You know, staying with villages, like remote places because that's just their way of life.
Co-host
That's their way.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Maya
You know, I'm, I'm good. Okay.
Co-host
I'll stop complaining about that weirdo locker room in that random town I was in where I was like, this is weird.
Co-host/Guest
No, it's not like a five star hotel or anything. But yeah.
Maya
As long as the water's clean.
Interviewer
I also think a lot because I seen these dancers.
Co-host/Guest
Yeah.
Interviewer
Having to perform when they have a physical ailment or when they're sick. Now if you aren't, if you're truly not feeling well, you can send out a post about needing to reschedule. But back in the day as artists. Well, I mean you've seen it occasionally where an artist is like, I'm sorry, I have to reschedule the show. I am under doctor's orders. I can't perform. But that happens very few and far between. You guys have to perform sometimes when you are really not feeling well. How do you get through that?
Maya
Well, yeah. There are days that you're not vocally the best, of course. And the problem is the first thing that goes when you don't sleep is your voice.
Interviewer
Right.
Maya
I can do a 90 minute set and just sing and dance the whole time. You're just not going to get the best vocals. Yeah.
Interviewer
Okay.
Maya
Or the best anything. But it's when you lose your voice and people are paying their hard earned money.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Maya
And they don't get to experience you. What do you do? So I have often seen artists that are doing 30 dates or more back to back to back pre record their vocals where they can chime in and out. And I think it's smart because there are hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake with investment or venues etc, and of course schedules of your supporters, ticket refunds and just business in general can be hindered when you do have to reschedule.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Maya
So some want to cancel so that they can really give the full authentic live experience versus lip syncing. But sometimes the show must go on.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Maya
And often doctors come backstage. Some artists choose to get steroid shots or whatever concoctions they might be. IVs for dehydration or maybe, you know, no media that day. Vocal rest that day. Cancel the interview so that you can perform. Perform and not have to cancel the show. Yeah.
Interviewer
How do you take care of your Body. When you're on the road, what are some of your go to things that are like, these are my must haves for me to stay healthy and feeling good.
Maya
Well, when it's a tour, I must be able to sleep. Yeah, yeah. So if the tour doesn't allow or the budget doesn't allow for tour bus, that can be very taxing on the body because you have to wake up five hours before your flight. First of all, because you have to get to the airport. Yep. You have to be there on time. Bags, lots of bags. And you know, collect your bag. Landing, you know, there's traffic, there's all kinds of things. And that you waste time. You waste so many hours doing airport tours. It's not feasible and it's not healthy. So sleep. What I do is put sleep first and foremost. If I'm not going to be able to sleep, then you're not going to be able to get a tour out of me.
Interviewer
Right.
Maya
So let's figure it out. Yep. You know, and I don't want to lip sync.
Co-host/Guest
Yeah, that's not an option.
Audiobook Narrator
Right.
Maya
That's number one. Now my diet is very important on the road, so I will not do a lot of things that cause inflammation. Okay. So lots of carbohydrates as well as gluten.
CarMax Announcer
No.
Maya
Okay. Some, but not every day. No bread, no pasta, no rice. I can't. My body will not do that. Yeah. You know, well, processed food, I have to eat more natural. Whole foods, even though I'm vegan, has to be less processed.
Interviewer
Okay.
Maya
Because it takes a toll.
Interviewer
Yeah. It takes a toll on the body.
Maya
Yeah.
Guest Singer
Wow.
Interviewer
That feels like you've got a very specific writer around food then. Like you can't just walk into a place and take whatever's there. Catering.
Guest Singer
Yeah.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Maya
But you can also let catering know in advance.
Interviewer
Exactly.
Maya
Restrictions, Allergies. You have to kind of understand what your body does and then cut off cutoff hours.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Maya
When you're going from time to zone to time zone, it matters.
Co-host
Yes, you're right. You're right.
Boost Mobile Announcer
Yep.
Co-host
Crossing over. We're crossing over.
Interviewer
Changing time zones today.
Maya
And one of the things that is really great when you don't necessarily get a full night's rest, sleep sounds.
Interviewer
Oh.
Maya
So I can literally feel like I took a six hour rest in a 30 minute power nap because it'll put you into deep REM sleep with the right frequency.
Interviewer
Is it like a white noise or. Or a specific.
Maya
There are some that are white noise, but some are specific hurts that literally put you out 30 minute, 60 minute, 90 minute design by NASA, by the way. Great. Yeah. And then I can just get up and go do my show.
Interviewer
I'm ready to go. As if you got a full night's sleep. Ooh, I love that. So we've mentioned a couple of times, Broadway for you. You've never actually done Broadway. You were prepping to be in Chicago for a nine week run in 2008, and then you broke your foot during rehearsals and the rescheduling never worked out, but you were in the movie Chicago. So I really want to manifest this for you. Can we get a real Broadway debut for you, please, in 2027? Is. Can we make that happen next year? Yeah, like right around the corner. I like to manifest fast.
Maya
I'm open to all things.
Interviewer
Yeah, yeah. Oh, man, I would love. I would love to see that you. If you are made for it, Chicago or not, you. You have to be on Broadway next year.
Leah
Please.
Co-host/Guest
Next year.
Interviewer
Next year, 2027.
Maya
I will keep that in mind.
Interviewer
Okay.
Maya
For you.
Interviewer
And please. And then the second it happens, can I be one of the first people you tell just because I will buy my tickets. I will.
Maya
I want to.
Interviewer
I will be screaming your name. I will be so excited. Outside of Broadway, you've had such an incredible, illustrious career. Is there anything still on your list that you're dying to do?
Maya
I am just getting started.
Interviewer
I know, I know.
Co-host/Guest
Oh, my goodness.
Maya
Like, everything was an education before. I feel like I was in grade school.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Maya
Learning the landscape and then graduating to the next phase. Now we're in junior high and high school and now. Okay, you've learned some things in college. Now you have your degree.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Maya
But there's still, you know, four more years to put in for your PhD.
Co-host/Guest
Okay.
Maya
There's still more work to do before you start paying it forward and really serving. But it's. It's all been beautiful and I can't believe it's been 28 years because it doesn't feel like it. But it's so fun now. It's amazing. I'm very proud of that young girl that just went for it, you know, weathered the storms and found the joy in it. And nothing has ever destroyed or come in between my love for music and the head. Head is on. Right. And I'm just really excited for what's to come. Even the albums that are already done.
Ryan Seacrest
Yes.
Interviewer
Yes. Yeah.
Co-host/Guest
Okay.
Co-host
I like that little.
Maya
It's my best work as a true songwriter, true vocalist and just human being that I can't wait to share with everyone.
Interviewer
Well, we cannot wait to experience it. You have always been such an inspiration. So beautiful, so sweet, so thought provoking, so smart. I absolutely love being around you now twice.
Co-host
I think we are hottest.
Interviewer
Hottest four years ago.
Co-host
Yeah, it's just a couple years ago. I was gonna say what are we hottest, hottest 45 under 45 or something.
Maya
It gets greater later.
Co-host
It's absolutely right.
Leah
Ding.
Co-host
Thank you so much for spending your
