Give me money for cigarettes. I'll never leave your filthy bed. I stay the night and one night we can.
Bowen Yang
Two or three years, the kids are not all right.
Danielle Fishel
But that, that's okay. Cause no one here is. So every week I ask my listeners to send over their own horror stories from childhood in the form of a voice memo. And I gotta be honest, realizing we are not alone feels good. This week it is Mandy from Maryland who almost killed a boy by breaking up with him. Let's play the clip. When I was in eighth grade, I was going out with this boy for a few weeks. And by go out, I mean only seeing each other at school and then instant messaging each other from home. Definitely a low stakes relationship. I ended up breaking up with him at a school dance. And later that night he had a seizure and was ambod out from the dance, which was crazy. Thankfully he was okay, but everyone blamed me for it and I felt super bad. So we got back together, fast forward a couple more weeks and he broke up with me by taking I love Mandy out of his AOL instant messenger profile. If you know, you know. Oh my gosh. First of all, did she fake us? I think she should have faked a seizure when he broke up with her. She did. She can't get him back. Fake a seizure, get ambulance, get to the hospital.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
That is insane. And do we know if he faked the seizure? Like was that legit?
Danielle Fishel
I mean, I don't know. You're right. Good point. I can't believe that everybody, everybody was like, this is your fault.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I remember, you know, back in the day, what'd she say? She was in eighth grade. Yeah, like that's like how you had a boyfriend. Like you didn't really talk to them. It was more of just like high and bye, like a quick hug. But it was more like talking on aim.
Danielle Fishel
Totally.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
You know, doing that. So. But breaking up at a school dance,
Danielle Fishel
I mean, I know there are, there are Better. Better times, too.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
They should have did it before the chance.
Danielle Fishel
Exactly. Do you have any terrible breakup stories?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I don't think so. I feel like all my breakups were, like, nice.
Danielle Fishel
That's good.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I think I only broke up with one person, and it was just like, hey. And it was right before I went on the show. Okay, well, no, I got dumped before that, but before that one, I was just like, hey, like, I'm turning 21. I just want to, you know, just live a little, you know, And I love you. I think you're great, and let's just be friends. And. And he respected that. So I think all my breakups were, like, very mutual and nice and, well, I don't know, mutual on his side. But it was. It was not mean and it wasn't, like, dramatic and drama, Man.
Danielle Fishel
I used to. I think as a kid in my teens and twenties, even thirties, having to break up with somebody almost made it not worth it to get into a relationship. It was like, I would stress about it for weeks, I would think about it for months. I. I would mentally checked out of a relationship long before I ever actually had the conversation, just because I couldn't get myself to have the conversation, to be like, I don't think we should be together anymore. And I would very similarly to Mandy, if they guilt tripped me or begged me to stay. I would always end up back together with them before the breakups. Never stuck because I would just feel bad. I'd be like, okay, I guess we can be together.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Yeah.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. But I'm so. I mean, very rarely do you hear from people that most of their breakups were respectful and mutual feeling. That's so nice. When you were a cheerleader as a teenager, were any of your boyfriend's football players?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
No, no. They were all my best friends. I mean, I'm sure that's the dream. Like, you're the cheerleader and you got the football boyfriend. Yeah, no, I. I think in high school, I dated, like, the older ones.
Danielle Fishel
Okay.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
And they weren't in football, but. Yeah, but they were all my best friends, so it was kind of like we were just all a big best friend group.
Danielle Fishel
Was your high school football team good?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
They were decent.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. Yeah.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
They weren't. They weren't, like, sucky, but they weren't, like, going to the playoffs. They made it to the playoffs but never actually won, so we had a decent football team.
Danielle Fishel
Okay. Sounds better than mine. I went to Calabasas High School. We did not. There were a few years, like, before mine that were pretty Good. And then I don't know when. By the time I got there, we, we weren't, we weren't doing any winning. Do you think you're ready to start thinking about your kids dating?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Well, yeah. I mean, my son, he's 13. I think when he was 11, he came home and he's like, mom, I have something to tell you. And I'm like, what? Like, I have my first girlfriend. And I started crying and he started cracking up. He's like, mom, why are you crying? I was just thinking about his, I was thinking about like him getting married and oh my God, like, there goes my baby. But then I was like, so proud of him. Like, oh my God, your first girlfriend. Like, do you want me to do anything? So it's a bunch of emotions. It was crazy. And he's only had one girlfriend and it's been nothing since. And I keep asking, like, do you have a girlfriend yet? Like, you're in seventh grade, right? Can she come over? Like, you know, let's cook her dinner. Like, I'm.
Danielle Fishel
Is he still with the same girl?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
No, they broke.
Danielle Fishel
Okay.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Girlfriend. Since that.
Danielle Fishel
Okay.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
So I'm just like, come on. So I think he's just like best friends with a lot of the girls. Yeah. No girlfriend. But when he did tell me about it, I broke down. I felt my knees in dramatics. He's like, mom, why are you freaking out?
Danielle Fishel
I will probably be the same. Although right now, because I still feel like it's so far off for me. I have a, an almost 7 year old and an almost 5 year old, so I still have some time. But I, when I do think about them, them getting into relationships right now, I just feel so, so happy about it. Like, I just can't wait to see who the girls are or who the people are that they pick to be in relationships with. And I really hope I like them because I can't wait to like welcome them into the family. As somebody who doesn't have daughters, I'm like, listen, if you guys end up being straight and marrying women, I have so many wonderful purses and jewelry and things to give to your future spouse. But I better like them because if I don't like them not giving them anything.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Yeah. I want to picture it like I. Me and my mother in law, like, I'm obsessed with my mother in law. She's everything and amazing and I feel comfortable with her. And yeah, we're just, we're very, very close. And I'm like very close to Gianni's sister. Like I consider her one of my best friends and we talk every single day. So I want that. Yeah, when you know, my, my son's eventually, you know, get married, like I want, I want everyone to get along and just have like a great relationship.
Danielle Fishel
But totally. I also had a wonderful relationship with my mother in law and she was like an absolute dream. I know most people are surprised to learn what OCD really is because pop culture has spread the idea that it's just about being super neat and organized. But that's not accurate at all. My husband has OCD and I can tell you it is so much more than that. Real OCD is a serious condition where you get unwanted distressing thoughts called intrusive thoughts. They're stuck on repeat in your mind, often focusing on people or things we care about like relationships, identity or character, making them hard to ignore. And then you feel driven to do certain behaviors called compulsions to try to make the anxiety stop. This obsession and undying desire to make it go away can completely derail you for decades. Jensen ruined his own life and the happiness of those around him purely because he couldn't make the repeated worry go away. But he'd eventually learn it doesn't have to be that way because OCD is one of the most treatable mental health conditions. Once you get the right kind of specialized therapy. OCD needs ERP therapy. That's exposure and response prevention, which is proven to be the most effective treatment. Regular talk therapy isn't recommended and can actually make OCD worse. NOCD is the world's leading OCD treatment provider and all of their licensed Therapists specialize in ERP therapy with NOCD is 100% virtual, covered by insurance for over 138 million Americans and includes support between sessions so you never have to face OCD alone. Kal Penn
everyone, it's Kal Penn. I'm the host of Irsay The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast, I am sitting down with Ray Porter, the narrator of Andy Weir's audiobook project, Hail Mary Massive sci fi adventure about survival and science and what happens when you wake up alone, very far from Earth. I really had to make a decision because I caught myself getting that frog in my throat and starting to get teary as I'm narrating some of these sections. And it's like, okay, yo, yo, yo, is this indulgent? And I really thought about it. I was like, no. At this point it would kind of be betraying the trust the author and the listener have in telling this story if I don't go through it. But there's places in this book that that deeply, emotionally affected me and I left it on the mic. That's great because it served the story. People will say like, oh my God, I cried at the end.
Public Investing Platform Announcer
It's like, yeah dude, me too.

So I know another thing that we have in common, something maybe more upbeat than sharing cancer in common is a history of with it being involved in professional wrestling. You actually yeah, well, I Mean, I haven't been a part of it, like, quite like you. I mean, you actually competed at WrestleMania, which, I mean, I find your performance to be wildly underrated. You were great and got to tap into that cheerleading background. How did that all come together for you?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I don't remember. I feel like.
Danielle Fishel
Do you remember what the training was like for that?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
So I don't remember how that came about, but I was like, absolutely, yes. Like, I know how to do a back handspring. I could do all these flips. Like, let's go. So, yeah, I trained for it. And they started putting me on Raw, and I would do, like, these random, like, fights with the girls, and they taught me how to, like, make it real. And I was like, oh, my God. But then, like, once you're in the moment, I'm, like, actually, like, really trying to hurt them, and I'm like, I'm so sorry. Like, I'm on stage, like, performing, and I'm really, like. And then I'm like, oh, my God. I'm like, are you okay? Like, I really just pulled your hair. So I got into the moment a little too much, but it was one of the best moments, like, I always say. Like, what's the best moments of my career? Like, what I did. And I always say WWE, WrestleMania and Dancing with the Stars, like, top two, like, incredible moments that I would do over and over again.
Danielle Fishel
I'm glad to hear you had such a wonderful experience on Dancing with the Stars, because so did I. That was just, like, an absolute time of my life experience.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I was on season 17 for a long time ago, but I was. I always wanted to do it. And I was such a fan, like, watching it with my mom, and I was like, there's no way they would ever ask Jersey Shore kids to do it. And then they asked me, and I was like, oh, yes. I was like, yes. Immediately, like, right when I got the call, my heart was pounding out of my chest, and I'm like, oh, my God. Like, always wanted to do this. And, yeah, that was Sasha. I know. You know Sasha. Yes.
Danielle Fishel
The best.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Yeah, so he. I was his first year, so when he walked in, I was like, oh, I don't know you, but you're spunking cute. Like, let's go. And we just hit it off right away. And, yeah, like, best friends immediately.
Danielle Fishel
So, yeah, I can definitely see your personalities clicking really well.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
All we did was laugh. It was hysterical. So, yeah, it was the best experience of my life. Dancing with the Stars and WrestleMania, like, amazing.
Danielle Fishel
Did they have the Tour. Back then, did you go on tour at all?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I don't remember.
Danielle Fishel
Okay.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I didn't. I didn't go on tour, but I think the tour was just starting.
Danielle Fishel
Okay.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I remember two seasons after they had the tour, and they came to Jersey, and I just, like, ran there. I was like, hi, everyone. They become family, which is crazy. That's literally all you do for, like, a month and a half.
Danielle Fishel
Yep.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
So when it's over, it's just like, oh, my God, now people again. So it's weird. So when they were on tour and they came to Jersey, I ran there. Literally ran there.
Danielle Fishel
I love it. Okay. Before I let you go, I wanted to show you a few iconic outfits from the first run of Jersey Shore, and I want to get your feelings on them now. Any backstory you can give me. So remember, everything is coming back into style. So we are trendsetters. All right, let's pull up the first picture. What is the backstory with this outfit?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Yeah. So this is in Florence, Italy.
Danielle Fishel
Okay.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
And I think I was trying to. I was walking to our work. We worked at a pizzeria, and I think I was walking to get Dina out of her shift because I wanted to have a meatball day, and I was just bored at the house, and I'm like, let me go grab Dina, and we're gonna go drink somewhere.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
This was, like, my meatball day outfit. Like, ready to go. Our furry boots, which I don't know why we kept wearing them, because it was so hot out that by the time you took them off, it was like taking a cast off. It was just, like, sweat everywhere. Disgusting. I don't know why we kept wearing them. Yeah. I just. I love those glasses with the chain. I always had something in my hair, whether it was like a poof or like a bow. Always had something in my hair.
Danielle Fishel
I love these furry boots. And you saying, like, it was so hot. Why did I continue to wear these furry boots?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Yeah. And they were actually cozy. But, like, you were in that damn Gucci bag. That's the bag that I got arrested in. I just. I brought it everywhere, even to jail, literally.
Danielle Fishel
It's been every. Do you still have it?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I still have it. It's so dirty. I refuse to wash it, because those are the memories.
Danielle Fishel
There they are. Don't wash the memories out. All right. I don't want you to feel alone. I brought my own horrible outfit. Pictures to wear as well, so we can try to figure out what we were thinking. Let's pull up my first picture.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
It's probably a cute 90s outfit.
Danielle Fishel
No. Oh gosh. A dog in a purse on a red carpet.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Oh, is that lingerie?
Danielle Fishel
It is not lingerie. It is. It does kind of look like it. I remember buying this dress. I don't remember what exactly. I was thinking what do I have in my hair? Am I wearing like a flower tiara in my hair?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Yeah, that looks like a floral like headband.
Danielle Fishel
Oh gosh. What a nightmare. Okay, so here's what I will tell you most importantly about this picture is that I had just moved out of my parents house and was living on my own for the first time. And within days I went and and got a dog. Which is not the most responsible thing to do when you are newly living alone, have a full time job and also like to go out every night because puppies.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
That's why you brought your dog?
Danielle Fishel
I brought my dog because literally the dog could not be home alone. I what you don't see in that by the way she sheer black lace purse is a, A pee pad. I brought a doggy pee pad with me. This is a movie premiere. And when Anna needed to that was on my dog. Anna, her full name was Anastasia Blanca. When Anastasia Blanca would need to go to the bathroom, I would just pull out the pee pad and put it down on the floor and she would use the pad.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
So at least you were a responsible mom. So like you took your kid out and you brought the diapers like you were good.
Danielle Fishel
Exactly. I, it's, it feels a little like the mom who brings her kid to for her, you know, like not really sure exactly what I was doing. But, but okay, let's. You're right. I thank you for making me feel better. I did at least bring the diapers. Didn't let the dog pee in the movie theater without a pad at least. All right, let's go to another. Another Snooki picture. Oh yes. Oh, and more fuzzy. These are slippers.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
What? I just, I love my slippers. Yeah, I'm wearing slippers now. I'm just obsessed with my slippers.
Danielle Fishel
Slippers are amazing.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Yeah. So this is the day I got arrested.
Danielle Fishel
Oh.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
So where's the beach outfit? So the night before obviously we're at Karma and I don't think I went to bed till like 5am and I had the, the morning shift so we would work from like 10 to 2 and then the night shift would go in from like 4 to 9:30. I don't know, whatever. But I knew I had to work that morning and I was like, I'm not going. In my head, I was like, I'm not going. Yeah. And then just were like, you have to go. Like, you. You have to go. So I'm like, oh, my God. So I woke up and that. The dress. So you have the orange tank, but there's the dress underneath it. That was the dress from the night before. And I literally just got up and I took a blanket over. Over myself, and I walked to work in the. In the slippers. And I'm like, hi. Like, do you want me to work like this, or can I go home and shower and go to bed? So he was like, no, you have to stay here. So I'm like, fine. I'm just going to keep it going, because if not, I'm going to. I'm going to die. So, yeah, I ended up running away. And, like, I got like a beer at the. At the bar, and then I came back, and then that's when I threw on the. The shirt because I was like, I'm still wearing my dress from last night. Someone sees me. Yeah, I crazy. So let me throw on something. And then I put the hat on because my hair was greasy. I was just trying to make it work right. Dying inside. And then, yeah, I went a little too hard and then got arrested.
Danielle Fishel
Man, I can't believe the Gucci purse isn't in this picture.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I think I probably lost it, and then someone gave it back to me some.
Danielle Fishel
It's come back to you all. All these years. You've had it this whole time. Let's get to Nicole's final picture. The purse.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
See the purse. The purse is everywhere. The purse is everything. And in purse, like, I always had, like, my bronzer, my spray tan, my hairspray, maybe like a little thing of vodka or wine flask. Yes. I was prepared with everything. So this outfit, I was actually going to work in Italy at the pizzeria, and I was headed to work, but I was pretending that I got into a car accident. That was Mike's brace after he got into a fight with Ron. I was like, can I borrow this? And I put it on, and I told him that I got injured and I couldn't work. And I think it worked.
Danielle Fishel
Yeah.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it worked. And I just left work, and then I had a meatball day with Dina. So because you could see, I'm ready for meatball.
Danielle Fishel
You're ready for meatball day with the furry boots on.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I got the outfit on. Like, I got my glasses, my poof. And I was ready to go. I just had to tell them, listen, I'm injured. I can't work today. And it worked.
Danielle Fishel
How many pairs of these furry boots did you have?
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
I want to say like six. And they were all colors. So I had black, beige, white, pink, and I think I had like a leopard rainbow one.
Danielle Fishel
Did you always wear them with something short, like shorts or a mini skirt? Okay.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Yeah, that, that was like the look that we were going for me and Dina. It was like, show your cute legs and then like fuzzy boots. And who knew that we were like making a statement?
Danielle Fishel
Yeah. I mean, you guys are absolutely trendsetters.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi
Thank you.
