The afterparty. FOREIGN welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode. A little thing we like to call the after party. This is the show after the show. The party. After the party. The bridge to get you from one full episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard to dig into the dirt. Our mission, to uncover the truth, to confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode, we're talking about our Part 2 story on LED Zeppelin that just hit your feed. We're rewinding back to our Peter Tosh episodes, previewing next week's story on Pentagram. And we get into your voicemails, text, DMs, and as always, a whole lotta Rosie. This is the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers who know that the best history is the history that gets buried. Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want told. The kind you'll end up telling someone else. All right, discos, let's get into it.

I often pose this question and statement to Disgraceland listeners. It's this. It's if you feel like today's music culture doesn't reflect what you care about, you're not alone. You belong with the discos. Now. That's not just marketing spin. It's sincerely how I feel. And I know it's how a lot of You. Most of you guys feel as well. When I talk about modern music culture, I'm talking about the artists populating the Billboard charts and Spotify, new release playlists, that sort of thing. Music history, the myths, the legends are just more interesting to me. And it's not that I don't love some modern bands. I do. Geese, Turnstile. I've talked about these guys before, others. I've even had some of them on, on the show. It's just that. Well, you know what I mean? And I don't want to belabor the point here. I only want to set the stage for this conversation that I want to have. Because in the last few days, a lot has been made of Jay Z's choice of artists to perform at this season's super bowl halftime show. If you aren't aware, Jay Z, whose company Roc Nation, has a contract with the NFL to program the event, chose Bad Bunny. Okay, now, it's hard for me to find anyone who is excited about this choice, like, genuinely excited, like, going like, yes, fucking he did it. Chose Bad Bunny. Okay, Now, I say, I say it's hard for me to find anyone who's excited. That's weird because Bad Bunny is literally one of, if not the biggest artists on the planet. Like, you look quantifiably, it's just true. It's a fact. We're talking like Taylor Swift level huge. Now, I'm probably not seeing the excitement because my feeds are calibrated to show me what I'm interested in. And, well, I'm just not interested in Bad Bunny or his music. But a lot of people are. The question, however, is, are those people NFL fans? Bad Bunny is one of the most streamed artists on the planet. He sells out stadiums, he's got three Grammys, sells too many records to count charts hits. But do you hear Bad Bunny when you walk through the stadium at Orchard park in Buffalo on Sundays while Bill's mafia is tailgating? All you yinzers out there, are you. Are you bumping Bad Bunny on your way out of the stadium after watching Aaron Ayahuasca Rogers on Sunday afternoon? No. You guys have sticks as Renegade stuck in your head. Just like Bill's fans have the killers, Mr. Brightside, Pat's fans have the outfields. Jose's on a vacate, you know what I'm saying? Like, that's the. That's football, man. That's professional football. Anyways, the live fan experience is about classic rock and sure, some hip hop, but man, Eminem, Dr. Dream, Outcast, even Jay Z, they might as well be classic rock. They scratch the same itch for Generation X and elder millennials. Bad Bunny is about the future, okay? Which is fine. The NFL is an. Is internationally minded as a major corporation in America can be. There's only so many football fans in the United States. This is why there are now tons of international games. The league is trying to expand, but in. In my view, they're doing it in a. In a really lame way. They're sacrificing the needs of their current fans for what they perceive are the. The desires of their future fans. I can't stand it when brands do this. It drives me crazy and, and I don't really fully know how to articulate it, but you kind of know it when you feel it. Anyways, the next Super Bowl. This is. This is the kind of maddening part here. The next super bowl is in San Francisco. Now I'm not saying that the NFL should have chose locals like Dead and Company or Journey, who I'll I'll admit though more interesting to me than Bad Bunny. They are. Those bands aren't as relevant on the mainstream stage as Bad Bunny is. They're from San Francisco, sure. And it would be great for home hometown team to play in San Francisco. What's it called? Levi's Stadium, for the super bowl this year instead of Bad Bunny. But those guys just aren't. You know, how do you. If you. If you put Journey there instead of Bad Bunny, then you're really just. Then you're going too far in the other direction. Then you're really catering to the old people and that's not a good thing. Dead. Dead. Same goes for the Dead. Dead and Company. Excuse me. However. However. Dude, Metallica. Metallica. The choice was right there. It was perfect. It's a chip shot from 15 yards out. Jay Z. Metallica is from San Francisco. And Metallica is still completely relevant. They're still not just selling out stadiums, they're selling out stadium tours. Okay? Entire tours, years in advance. Metallica also has a huge international audience and I would argue, and I think quite successfully, that Metallica has way more appeal with NFL fans than. Than Bad Bunny. But does Metallica have that appeal with future NFL fans and that I do not know. Maybe they don't. Maybe they do. I don't know. Is Bad Bunny the worst choice the NFL could have made? No. And this is where things get really interesting because this sort of like super bowl halftime show, like the, the unveiling of the artist and all that, everything's eventized these days for social media. But I'm old enough to remember a time when this, the halftime show wasn't that big of a deal. You never, you didn't even think about it. It was small potatoes compared to the game. Now, for, for like my wife, it's the whole thing, you know what I mean? You ask her what her favorite super bowl was the last 10 years and she's going to talk about the one with the Maroon 5 dude and his shirt off. And I don't blame her. You know, dude was looking good that day. Anyhow, I'm wildly off track. If you go back, this is where it gets interesting. If you go back in the not so distant future and you start to see how the halftime show is programmed and it is fucking awesome and it's hysterical and you won't believe some of the things that the NFL was trying to pass off as entertainment. I don't know, I just. I just. I Can't get by Metallica all right, I got to move on. In the exclusive section of this after party, Seth and I are going to be recommending to you guys some of the weirdest and wildest super bowl halftime performances. Some that are going to make you feel better about the season's bad bunny choice even, but most are going to make you feel like you normally do, which is something along the lines of, man, I didn't realize how good we had it back then. I think about that a lot. All I gotta say is Prince. That's it. All right. You gotta be a Disgraceand All Access member to hear that though. It's five bucks a month. All right, guys, all this super bowl talk and it's barely October. Spooky season has arrived and we've kicked it off with a bang this week in our Part 2 Led Zeppelin episode about the haunted Headley Grange where Jimmy Page and the boys recorded many of their biggest. Well, I don't want to say hits songs, I should say. And we paired that episode with a mini episode on what, or shall I say, who was haunting the home of Jimmy Page. Hint it was not Aleister Crowley. Mini episodes are available for All Access members as well. Like I just mentioned, coming up in the rewind slot this week though, which is next in your feed, we've got our episodes, our two part story on Peter Tosh, and it's a particularly horrifying event that hopefully you never experience. Hopefully I never experience as well. And if you're a, you know, just to, you know, help out our sponsors here, if you're a SimpliSafe member, you'll never experience this horrific event that we detail in the Peter Tosh episode. You're gonna have to listen to find out what I'm talking about. Anyhow. Coming up next week in your feed, our episode on metal band Pentagram. Now, what's more Halloween than an episode on a band named Pentagram? The answer is none. None. More metal. Okay, when you're listening to this episode on Pentagram and you're hearing the story from the point of view of Teddy Pentagram, the cool older dude at the record store, be thinking about who your musical Sherpa was, okay? Who turned you on to great music when you were a kid? Was it an older sibling? Was it someone at a record store? Was it your cousin who smoked you up on Thanksgiving? Who turned you on to great music as a little Te age punk? Who was desperate to find the next great band? Whatever it was, who was that person? We want to know. Shout them out. Give them some love. Give them some appreciation. Show them some gratitude. 617-906-6638 Leave us a voicemail. Is it Mike and the Mechanics? What the hell was even happening? There was backwards mohawks. I don't understand. As you hear in this week's Led Zeppelin episode, Genesis makes an appearance. I think it's high time I dive into this. I will let you know, Michael, that in the exclusive section of this here after party, you will hear us talking a little bit about Phil Collins. I'm. And Germ here in the 619 hit us up on both issues.

Hey, Jake, this is germ the 619. Hey, brother. First of all, I'm listening to this and I heard more about that David character and I've heard on and I'll call him out on kfi. That's where I usually get my news because it's fairly legitimate most of the time, but still biased. But nonetheless, I thought that was brilliant because he gave me more information and Less words. And then you're talking about spooky. For Halloween time, we would have to have a freaking sit down conversation. I got more spooky stories than a human should have. I've done house cleansings. Our house is haunted. We just shot a video for one of my bands called Morningstar, which is exorcist themed, and we chose my place because it's haunted. Nonetheless, keep up the good work, brother, and enjoying the podcast, I guess. That's about it, man. I gotta get back to mowing lawns. Talk to you soon.
Jake Brennan
Jerem, thanks for the call. We got a little mini update on David this week. Turns out that the body and the back of the car that was allegedly registered in David's name, the body of that young woman, was apparently had been dead. I don't know. How do you say this? The person who they found dead in the back of that car had been dead for weeks before the body was put into the car. That's what investigators said. I believe yesterday they broke that news. So we're learning more slowly. And I find it really interesting that David hasn't been charged. Okay. That. I don't know what that means. It's gotta mean something, though. Or maybe it means nothing. I'm just reading tea leaves. I have a feeling we'll know more by the time we talk next week. Germ, you sound totally unfazed from living in a haunted house. Our house in Massachusetts, an old colonial from 1763, was so haunted that we sold it. I'm too scared to even really talk about it, and maybe I will, though, as October progresses. I've. I've never really talked about it publicly. Talked a little bit about it once on Instagram, but that was more my wife kind of pushing the issue. Good luck out there on the mower, Germ. Appreciate you. Thanks for calling in. Looking forward to seeing the new Morningstar video. All right, let's hear from Dave in the 801 in Salt Lake City.
Caller
Hey, Jake. Dave from Salt Lake City calling. So I was at a friend's house, and spiritual guy, this friend of mine, one night I left his house and went home. And right when I walked into my place, I felt this really evil presence. And I was just chilled. I didn't know what was going on. I didn't know if I was some sort of irrational fear, whatever. But right when I felt that, the phone rang and it was my friend who, confident, just left. And he said, how you doing? And I said, I'm not doing real well. He says, I know, I Said, what do you mean? You know? And he said, I got this feeling from God to call you and walk you through this. And I said, all right, well, what does God suggest I do? And he says, pick up your car and sing a song to Jesus. So, okay, I'll do that. And he says, I'll call you when you're done. And I said, okay, I'll call you when I'm done. He said, no, I will call you when you're done. Okay. So I did as he said, sang a song to Jesus. And just as I was playing the last chord, I hit the last chord. I was thinking to myself, this is the last chord I'm gonna play. And I. I did. I played it, and the phone rang right away, and it was my friend that hit. And he said, now go to bed and you're gonna dream. You're gonna dream about Jesus. You're gonna have an incredible dream. Now, I don't know if that was, you know, a suggestion that I took and ran with or before we saw the teacher or what I. I no idea to take. But anyway, I did. Did as he said, had an incredible dream, woke up the next day and forgot about the whole thing until later on in, you know, my day that I realized what had happened and it just tripped me out. So love your show. Appreciate all you do. It's been a great journey with you. Thank you, Dave from Salt Lake City. Have a good day, my friend.
Jake Brennan
Dave, first of all, Jesus has your back, as, you know, as he does for all of us, which is great to hear. No surprise. Thanks for sharing, Dave. I remember last year, similar to your story, when I was reading the Exorcist, the book, the Exorcist. And I was thinking about faith, because that's the theme of the book, faith in the larger sense. My faith, just the concept of faith. I was thinking about it daily, and I was thinking specifically about pride, the sin of pride. I was walking around for days, trying to come to terms with understanding how my own pride was sinful. I was trying to understand the concept of pride. I was really struggling with this. And I went to sleep one night, and I had this dream that I was being toyed with by a lion. A massive, giant lion with these huge paws. It was just pushing me around, just toying with me, just playing with me. And I wasn't scared. I was weirdly comfortable. And I woke up the next morning, and I thought, lion pride. Pride of lions, pride. And as that thought hit me, I was also hit by a wave of. I don't even know how to describe it. It was like elation. It was comfort. It was security. It was the opposite of fear. It was a feeling of everything's gonna be okay, dude. All right, I've got you. Just chill. You're gonna be all right. Now, this has nothing to do with hauntings. It's kind of the opposite. But Dave and Salt Lake, your call reminded me of this, so I just thought I'd share. Everything's gonna be all right, Dave. All right. Everything's going to be all right. Even if you live in a Haunted house from 1763. Let's check out Scott in the 6 to 3.
Caller
Hey Jake, it's Scott from the 623. Was just listening to the Depeche Mode episode and I was there. I used to be an assistant music buyer for Warehouse Records and happened to be dating a girl that worked for K Rock, the world famous kroc. And we were at the Warehouse Records on La Cieneca the night that the incident happened with the Violator album release. Definitely one of the scariest nights of my life being right in the middle of it as it happened. We were inside the store helping facilitate the band and things happening and people started breaking through the windows. Then stuff was being thrown in the store and then it just. All hell broke loose. Just a crazy, crazy night. Just incredible thing to be a part of. I was very fortunate to attend a lot of music events over that couple of years that I worked for the Warehouse Records. Great episode. Rock and roll, Scott.
Jake Brennan
Thanks for sharing, man. I love, love, love when folks who are at the events that we're depicting and describing in our episodes call and connect with us on their firsthand experiences. Appreciate you, Scott. Sounds scary, but at least you get a good story out of it. And Scott of course is talking about the Depeche Mode episode that we released last week for our All Access members and Patreon. You want to hear that Depeche Mode episode? You got to get over there, become a Rocka Roll a member for five bucks a month, you're going to get ad free. Well, all right, let's do this text. First of all. 617-906-6638. Forgot to mention that. 617-906-3638. You want to hit me up on voicemail and text and I don't even know if I gave you that number when I read the question of the week, which is going to be, you know, who's your musical Sherpa? Who shepherded you into all that great Music as a teenager. What was their name? What was their method? How do they do it? 6, 1, 7, 9 0, 6, 6, 6, 3, 8. That's how you're gonna let us know. Playing hurt today, guys. Not gonna lie. Had a late night last night. Sox won. We'll get into that later. Four, two, five. Writes in. Hey, Jake. Jules from Seattle. Just listening to the Led Zeppelin piece takes me back to the fabulous forum in 1977. 17 years old and totally psyched. First thing we see upon entry. Bodies passed out along the curved wall. Stupid suckers too wasted to see Led Zepp. The show was totally unbelievable. Mind bl. Thanks for your great storytelling. Rock on, brother. Jules, just incredible, man. Incredible. I cannot imagine what it was like to see led Zeppelin in 1977. FOMO. I am jealous. 615 texts in. Jake Brennan. I just finished. We Begin at the End. And now I'm sobbing thanks to you guys. Getting a lot of messages about this book. I talked a lot about this book because this book is freaking amazing. We Begin at the End by Chris Whitaker. It's fantastic. You don't believe me, ask Dr. Lundy. Or just listen to what the615 said there. Fantastic book. I just read the Power and the Glory by Graham Greene and I have lots of thoughts. I'm going to get into none of them here, but if anyone wants to talk about that, hit me up on Patreon. I'm reading now. Finally, Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. And wow, this guy's a special writer. Special writer. It's. You have to kind of. If for anyone who hasn't read Cormac McCarthy before, I read the Road back in the day, but this one, it's similar style, not exactly the same, but you just gotta kind of submit to this dude's style of writing. It's. Just go into it knowing this isn't gonna be a normal novel. Okay? It's gonna be different. It's like Frank Zappa fans. That's a bad analogy. What's a better analogy? It's. I don't know. It's like, I guess Metallica. You go to a Metallica concert, you can expect that it's going to be loud. You read a Cormac McCarthy book, you gotta. You expect you're gonna be pulled into the slipstream and he's in charge. He is just. He's got you. He is the current. And you're just. You're just a leaf and you're just floating along, man. You can't fight it. You can't go against the current. Does that make sense? I think it does for me anyways. 617-906-6638. You want to get at me about anything music related? Question of the week, books, whatever, hit me up. Voicemail and text. And I'm always available in the Patreon chat as well. Now I saw an incredible television series. I finished it last week. I want to talk to you guys about it in a minute, but I can take a quick break. Back in flash. The new Popeyes and Hot Ones menu is fire flavor. Trust me, because I'm about to eat it. I finished watching Black Rabbit on Netflix starring Jason Bateman in Jude Law and I just don't know that I've seen a better limited series on television than, than this show. Now I, I know it's, it's like they almost it the makers, the filmmakers, sorry, the television makers, the showrunners, the writers. It's almost as if they took me and they put me in a lab and they studied exactly what would appeal to me and then they went off and they made a television limited series about it and they came back with Black Rabbit. It's perfectly calibrated to make me of all people love it. And if you're a music fan, if you're somebody who spent a lot of time in, in New York, if you're Gen X, this is just, you know, if you have friends who work in the service industry, if you've, you've, you've played in restaurants, it's just, if you were in bands, it's just all the things, man. Plus all the charm of Jason Bateman and Jude Law and incredible propulsive storytelling. Just fantastic. I want to talk about all of it, but I don't want to spoil it for you. It's got me thinking too. I had this idea about doing a Hollywoodland episode on Jason Bateman and Jude Law because Jason Bateman and Jude Law both had these mid career dips at different ages, I believe for both of them. Bateman goes into it in great detail in, in his Marc Maron interview from about five, six years ago or whenever that was. It's hysterical. But I thought I had this idea in. Seth, if you're listening and I know you are, where we do a Hollywoodland episode and it's, it's on both these guys, it's a joint episode and we track both their careers and their mid career dips and then their comebacks at the Black Rabbit, which I thought would be very. Black Rabbit is a restaurant for those of you who don't know. That's why I said at the Black Rabbit. And the series is called Black Rabbit. So there you go. And there's some strokes involved. I'm not going to give it away. Just the strokes. Okay, all right. But that, I don't know. That sounds, that sounds difficult. But that hasn't stopped us before. Maybe we'll get into it. We have tons of stories though from the Annex of Hollywood and true crime happening over in the Hollywoodland feed with Dr. Lundy, who I just mentioned, who's taking your voicemails and texts in the wrap party bonus episode. And if you're not listening, here's a taste of what you're, what you're missing. Go ahead, Matt, play him the clip.
Dr. Zeff Lundy
I'm just going to jump right into it here at the top of the block here and give you a couple of quotes from Robert Mitchum because they're just, they're so great. I want to, I want to start with this. Okay, here's one. I got three expressions. Looking left, looking right and looking straight ahead. Number two, movies bore me, especially my own. And then number three, third quote from Robert Mitchum, maybe my favorite, there just isn't any pleasing some people. The trick is to stop trying. Which, that last one reminds me of something my mom always used to say to me, which was, who cares what other people think? You're never going to see these people again. Right. It's like some of the best life advice to get from a person who was full of great advice, but I was never personally able to take that advice and run with it. I am so un Robert Mitchum at heart. At my core, I am a people pleaser and I can't not care what other people think, nor can I stop trying like Robert Mitchum said. And why is that? I don't know, Doc, how much time you got? But enough about me. I want to talk about Robert Mitchum. I want to talk about the attitude of Robert Mitchum. The swagger, the defiance. I mentioned this briefly last week, but Dennis Brennan, Jake's dad, who helps us with some research here at Double Elvis, when he did research on Robert Mitchum, he's, he came back and said, this is like this guy was the biggest misanthrope in Hollywood. And it got me thinking. As I was thinking about Robert Mitchum over the weekend, preparing to, to, to write and record this episode, I wonder how a guy like Robert Mitchum would fare in today's social media landscape.

All right, so subscribe to Hollywoodland. Just do that on Apple, Podcasts, on Spotify, on whichever podcast app you use. It's Wednesday as I'm recording this and you're likely hearing this on Thursday, the day that it's being released. I just watched last night an incredible playoff matchup between the Red Sox and the Yankees. Try saying pick up a pumpkin spice five times fast for your five hour energy shot. Again available online at five hourenergy.com or Amazon. And I got to say, this is one of those moments where I don't even know that I can rant. I mean, the Sox won a barn burner of a high stakes pitching duel in the opening playoff game last night against the Yankees. The Pats did what a great football team is supposed to do last Sunday and they destroyed a crap team at home. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm kind of afraid to rant. I'm afraid to complain because I don't want to upset the Boston sports karma that we have going into tonight's Game two against the Yankees. How pathetic is that? A New Englander who can't find anything to complain about. Who even am I? Okay, I know what I'll complain about. The damn. Well, I guess I could complain about not being able to get the shot off before the buzzer but I won't. That was a sports rant sponsored by five Hour Energy's new Pumpkin Spice flavor. These new Pumpkin Spice five Hour Energy shots are fall in a Bottle and bring that classic pumpkin spice flavor that we all know and love. Our favorite fall drink. In an energy shot, you can pick up a Pumpkin Spice 5 Hour Energy Shot available online at Fiveourenergy.com or Amazon. Are the Patriots going to make it to the super bowl this year? Highly unlikely. But that's not going to stop Zeff Lundy and I from talking about the halftime shows from the past that were just bonkers crazy. All right. And some, of course that featured some great music. But to be honest, I got to say I'm more interested in the 50 yard line magicians. Phil Collins is halftime cargo pants, Michael Jackson's bizarre disappearing act. I'm more interested in that stuff than I am Prince tearing it up in the rain. This bonus "Afterparty" episode of DISGRACELAND is a lively, interactive dive into the intersection of music myth, spooky folklore, infamous Super Bowl halftime shows, and the personal musical journeys of listeners. Host Jake Brennan riffs on the state of the Super Bowl’s musical choices, teases upcoming episodes about haunted musicians, and invites listeners to share their musical “Sherpas.” The show leans into its October “spooky season” vibe, featuring ghost stories, mysterious band lore, and first-person tales from fans who were there for some of rock’s wildest moments.
Timestamp: 02:36 – 10:52
Modern Choices vs. Classic Expectations:
Jake laments Jay-Z and Roc Nation’s selection of Bad Bunny as the next Super Bowl halftime performer, noting the disconnect between the artist’s global popularity and the tastes of core NFL fans:
"Do you hear Bad Bunny when you walk through the stadium at Orchard Park in Buffalo on Sundays while Bill's Mafia is tailgating?... That's football, man. That's professional football."
(Jake Brennan, 05:10)
San Francisco’s Homegrown Talent Overlooked:
He suggests local legends like Metallica would have been a more culturally relevant choice for the game’s Bay Area location:
"Dude, Metallica. The choice was right there. It was perfect. It's a chip shot from 15 yards out, Jay-Z. Metallica is from San Francisco. And Metallica is still completely relevant."
(Jake Brennan, 08:30)
Commentary on Corporate Expansion:
Jake criticizes the NFL's efforts to appeal to “future fans” at the expense of their core audience, reflecting on when the halftime show wasn’t such an event:
"They're sacrificing the needs of their current fans for what they perceive are the desires of their future fans. I can't stand it when brands do this."

(Jake Brennan, 14:04)

This Afterparty episode delivers the trademark DISGRACELAND blend of offbeat music history, real-life drama, listener participation, and genre-mashup storytelling—for listeners who want both the stories the industry would rather forget and the sense of belonging that comes from obsessing over music’s strangest dark corners. As always, the tone is curious, irreverent, and community-driven, insisting: this isn’t just content, it’s a movement.
