Well, it was an interesting day at jets camp because David Bailey, second overall pick in the draft, had a huge day.

He's everything that we expect him to be. It'll be really exciting once we get the pads on. I think we all understand through these acclimation days we're still in shorts, but just to be able to see the energy and the speed and the quickness off the edge and the ability to hold a strong edge and the way that he wants to play the run game is everything that I imagined from that player. And it was actually just more than him. You saw J.J. inkambari. All right. You saw him. He was pretty active today playing on the edge. So I'm happy with all those guys. Will did some good things also today, you know. So when just comes to that edge group, I thought those guys did a pretty good job today.

Apparently they're having interest in Terry and Arnold. So where do we stand with that Ag?

Nothing has changed when it comes to how me and Mooch operate at man. We're Always going to look to add guys that, that we feel like that can help us. And when I say, I mean look at guys. Guys, let me, let me take that back. We always looking at guys that we feel like we can help them and we do our due diligence and listen, that doesn't mean that we're going to bring everybody in. The thing is, man, we're just going to turn over every stone to make sure that is this a guy that can help us, man, with everything that's going on, which we don't know and I let those guys figure that out, it will be a good fit and we're going to do this no matter what. No different than Russell Wilson, no different than anybody else that we look at now.

He was released by the Lions and he's a corner. So he's an area of need. And of course because he comes from Detroit, Aaron Glenn's got intimate knowledge of him. So that's why people are putting two and two together. The other thing to kind of get excited about Peter around the jets is that they've got a grown up in the room on the offensive side of the ball and that's Frank Reich. I don't know how good a head coach Frank Reich is. Matter of fact, if I had to guess, I said not a very good head coach.

Well, listen, he won that huge come from behind game against Houston. People forget that that was not Jim Kelly. But the point is, is that he's an offensive guy. So whether it's developing the next quarterback or working trying to get the most out of Geno Smith or whoever, you know, Frank Reich being here I think is a really good thing for this offense. And Aaron Glenn, what are, what were conversations with Frank Reich like?

The conversation just, just throughout, just checking on me from his words of man, listen, I know exactly who you are as a person, as a man, I know as a football coach, I mean you just keep your process and keep going straight ahead and don't let anything on the outside just deter you from what you're trying to do. And that's encouraging, especially come from him. And I don't know how much you guys know him, but he's a man of faith. Been married for a number of years, have a beautiful family man. It is, it is a luxury to have men like that in your life because we all need men that we can lean on. So from a former teammate to somebody I've competed against to now being on this staff, those conversations were nothing but positive. And we've always just talked football. Just hearing what his philosophy is. I would always think, man, I feel the same way, man, how can I do this as his job as a head coach? How can I navigate myself this way? And he would always give me his opinions on that. And it's been good. It's been good, man. And I'm glad he's here. Glad he's here.

All right. Joe Tippmann is over at guard after playing some center. So Glenn talked about that Versatility.

Yeah. And when you say move the round, I think it's only been from center to guard. So I don't want to say it's a lot of moving, but I would say this. And it's no different from what I said last year. I mean, he was a guy that coach, whatever you needed me to do, need me to do, I do it. And I think he's really embraced playing the guard position now. Listen, obviously we signed him because we know what type of player he is, we know what type of leader he is and type of man he is, and that's one of the reasons why he's here. And we want to continue to build this team with men like that. So very unselfish, communicates very well, does a good job of getting along with his teammates and does a really good job in the locker room. So I'm happy, I'm happy to have him where exactly where he's at.

All right, Aaron, what are the expectations for the three first round picks?

Well, the expectations is for all those guys to have a role, but they have to decide that themselves. You guys have heard me say this before. We're out there trying to compete and no one's given anything, so they determine that role. And I'm always be honest with those guys in that aspect. Listen, here's what we need you to do. Here's how you can do it and here's how you got to compete to beat this guy out because that guy's not going to let you just have it.

And I want to create that type of environment here, you know, so the expectations, yes, they have a big role, but they have to decide that themselves.

All right. And Cabe club Nick, not a first round pick, but a fourth round pick. But what did you think of his second day?

Man, he made some throws today, didn't he? Listen, we knew exactly what we were getting. We understand his trajectory when he got the Clemson. How when he came into Clemson isd, I think he was the number one recruit when it comes to a quarterback. And then he has some issues, you know, but then he picked himself up. So we know that the heels that he's had in this college career, and that's the thing that we're intrigued by him because he was able to bounce back and continue to go. And to me, that shows leadership too. When things went down, man, he continued to go. So I thought he made some really good throws today. He's still improving on what we asking him to do and again, we look forward to see how he progressed during camp.

Well, obviously it's. Anytime there's a quarterback in camp and you don't really have a quarterback of the future, there's always going to be eyeballs on him to see can that be the next Tom Brady? But the draft seems to be where they're going to get their quarterback, it appears. But there could be an avenue, Peter, for the jets next year to get another quarterback. Go ahead. So we're talking about who the next quarterback of the jets could be. And Carlin and Dan talked about this and. And Jake talked about it as well on his show. Baker Mayfield wants a new contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and things are not going well. Peter, he feels he's being disrespected over this new deal.

[G]

I wanted the deal done and set the deadline and told them it was going to be all ball after that. And I did mean that. And I don't know if they thought I was just going to take some of the offers that they gave, but I'm at the point of my career and understanding what I've brought to this franchise. One, I'm very, very thankful for the chance they gave me. Do not get me wrong on that. But I've also know I really know what I've brought to this franchise, leadership wise and even play wise. It's been some of the best years of my career and I think it's only going to trend upwards just being comfortable and feeling that. So disappointing in that regard to not have, you know, to feel disrespect a little bit. And that's really the disappointing part, to feel undervalued after, you know, thinking you've earned it. This is not a poor me thing. It's. There's a lot other people that have it way worse off.

[B]

I'm not sure what the issue would be. Now he is 31 years old, but I think we've seen in the NFL you're not overly concerned about quarterbacks in their early 30s. And it's not like he's got a ton of work on him. He's only played in 123 games since 2018. So he had that amazing 24 season through for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, a little bit less last year, certainly just a shade under 3,726 touchdowns, 11 interceptions. The year that he's through 41 touchdowns, he did throw 16 interceptions. He also fumbled the ball 13 times, lost it twice. So he's a bit of a renegade. But listen, he's. Why would you not. Why would you want to get out of the Baker Mayfield business? Would be my question. And he says he's not going to negotiate with Tampa much longer.

[G]

It's disappointing to say the least, but it's all ball here and I know I'm going to have a good year. I know this team, the things that we went through last year put us in a good spot for this year, depth wise. A lot of guys being thrown to the fire to be able to grow and learn fast and it didn't go the way we wanted. But it's new season and it's going to help us in the long run this year. Added some new pieces and so I'm excited about it. It's all ball from here. You know, after today, like I'll answer a few more questions about the contract, but after today I'm not answering anymore because I'm not negotiating anymore.

[B]

Now it's probably the case, Peter, in a salary cap sport and there are other players that they've got to get taken care of as well. Is that all right? He took a step back last year, threw for almost 1,000 yards less through 15 less touchdown passes. So is it wrong for Tampa to say, all right, let's see how you play this year. And if we still don't know, guess what? We can franchise tag so they can buy themselves this year and next year with the franchise tag. So what would you do? Would you want to wait and see whether he's trending in the wrong direction because he had the drop off from 24 to 25. Or would you just say I can't take any chances. There's only a handful of quarterbacks in this league that can win games. I'm going to hold on to this guy. What would you do?

[A]

I think Baker may feel that this point is sort of a you do whatever you have to do to keep him done. Like you just talked about, age wise, he's not in a place that you're worried about him yet, right? Overall, overall, health wise, pretty good. Only has been going the right direction. Seems like he's got like legitimate moxie and shows up in big spots. He's in an era when everyone thought you would fall off of a cliff because you were in the post Brady championship era. Don it see, tell me that didn't just stink of we are now going to end up just being nothing for the next five years. We got our championship, now we're garbage. Instead, they've become the perennial favorite to win, albeit a bad division, their division every year. I'm doing everything I possibly can to get Baker Mayfield and if I am a team like the jets, who we assume will not have anyone going into next season. Don, he is the very rare coming along at the right time where he's in the absolute sort of crux of his prime and you could get him for like a five year window. They don't come along every day.

[B]

And of course, the big name that Tampa's dealing with is Vitavia. Same age, he's a nose tackle and they want to give him a contract. He's already demanded a trade. The problem here, Peter, is you're going to probably have to pay him north of $50 million. And I can't blame Tampa for saying, okay, I might be ready to do that. But he threw for 1,000 yards less than last year. So let me, let, let me take another look. He'll be motivated to go out there and have a big year. I've got control of him. I could always franchise tag him if I'm not sure. Yeah, I run the risk of having to give him even more money if he has a monster season. But if he ends up having a bad season, I'm going to be happy to say, okay, we can part ways with him because he's trending away now. He's going to be 32 coming off of two seasons that weren't even close to what he did in 24. I can't blame Tampa for trying to buy another year. But the problem is is these guys have feelings. Now he's in his feels okay. He's got Tampa being a perennial playoff team. He's had some big seasons and he's not feeling the love. Now you throw it to the Jets. You're the New York Jets. You play this season and you have a 7 and 10 season, maybe even an 8, 9 season or maybe a 6 and 11 season. Whatever it is all on the table. It's an okay season but certainly not bad enough for you to be able to get Arch Manning one of the big guns coming out of the draft. And now you've got to have to trade your draft capital to move up to get the quarterback. Or do you offer Tampa one of your first round picks and say let me take Baker Mayfield off your hands. You have to worry about franchise tagging them. You don't have to worry about giving them a contract at all. I will give you a first round pick next year for Baker Mayfield. If you're the Jets. Would you do that?

What's the point of first round picks? On what are you, what are you aiming to get?

[B]

Trying to get a quarterback that's exactly right for you.

[A]

Get one for five years, maybe six

[B]

years and I'm going to get a quarterback that I know what he's going to do right away, not plug him right in. I hope Arch Manning can adjust from college to the NFL. I hope he could be like his uncles. I hope he could be the next franchise quarterback. Now you do take the chance that Arch Manning or whoever is going to be way better than Baker Mayfield. But I know what Baker Mayfield is going to do. He's going to throw for 3,500 yards and 30 touchdowns for my team. Why wouldn't I want that? And I still have two first round picks. I think that just feels like a no brainer to me. And when you take a look at the jets history of success, when they've drafted a quarterback like a Namath, like you know, Kenny o', Brien, they had some success with him and Sanchez. They went back to back championship games. I can't say they did that because of him, but he was the starting quarterback. But I could also tell you they could have won a Super bowl with Vinny Testaverde. They went to a championship game with Vinnie and if Vinnie doesn't get hurt in 99, they're the odds on favorite to represent the AFC in the super bowl with a veteran quarterback. Brett Favre was 8 and 3 with the Jets. If he doesn't get injured, they go to the playoffs and maybe they do some damage in the playoffs with Brett Favre. We never knew what Aaron Rodgers could have done. But if he doesn't tear his Achilles, we're talking about the jets being a playoff team. Even Fitzpatrick didn't go to the playoffs in 2015, but he won 10 games. He's the last starting quarterback to win double digit games. Or he's have a winning record for the jets in a season. So they have a track record of going in this direction. Makes a lot of sense. He's, he's got talent to work with on the offense. He's got Frank Reich to work with. And I think that that would make, I think, I don't think he'd mind coming here

[A]

if you have a real chance to do this. Don, I would do everything I'd give. Let me ask you this. How much more would you give than a first round pick?

More. I understand. But like if they said, hey that's cool, we're almost there, we need a little more, would you give a little

We give a second round pick for the next year.

Yeah, I, well, I need to see what it looks like in 26. If, if Mayfield continues to trend downward, then I think all bets are off. But if he's throwing for 4,000 yards again and 35 touchdowns, hell yeah. Hell yeah. Because he'll only be 32 in April of 27. So he'll go into next season being 32 years old. What's the matter with that?

Also remember Mike Evans was out all of last year. Basically, you know, they weren't as good a team and they still threw for 3,700 yards, 26 TDs, 11 picks, QBR of 61. I mean he's been.

[B]

And the jets picks are their pick. They've got Pittsburgh's pick and they got Indy's pick. Now I don't think any of those picks, Peter, especially if I'm telling you the jets are going to 7 and 10 are going to be at the top of the first round of the draft. If I think the Steelers and the Colts will be pretty good football teams, right, that you're not. None of those, none of those picks are producing first overall. But your hope is that maybe you could take all of those picks and package them to move up if you wanted to draft the quarterback. I think this is a no brainer. And I like Baker Mayfield. He's built for New York. To be honest with you.

I'm doing my quick math here.

I love quick math.

And I'm just basing it on the Baker that we now know post getting to Tampa. Right. We're assuming that the first four years of his career was, you know, AI Slop. I don't know, Howard, how we got there. But Don, you're talking about, I believe, 96 touchdowns and 37 picks. Since he got to Tampa, the Jets haven't sniffed no starting quarterback play like that was. You know what that was. If you were to get Baker in 23, which was 4,000 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 picks, that's what the jets were dreaming of. When they got Rogers, they were dreaming of 4,000 yards, 30 touchdowns. Of course they, you know, didn't come close to that. I know, I know. The last year Rogers was here, he ended up sort of like, you know, gathering stats that resembled something half decent by the end of the year.

[B]

But when you watched it, you knew it wasn't that and you were doing it with a, with a, with a 39 year old quarterback you were hoping you'd squeeze a couple of years out of. You're talking about bringing in a guy that's 32 and they can give that to you for the next three, four years when you, if you give him a contract. And the most impressive thing I ever saw Baker Mayfield do was when he was let go in Carolina in 22. Signed with the Rams on like late Monday, early Tuesday and played in their Thursday night game.

Yeah, I remember that now.

[B]

They lost the game, but I'm like, the fact that he was able to get all that information, I don't care how much he knew ahead of time. That was, that was I. That really floored me.

[A]

There's another piece to that too. And I know you said this, but. So his birthday is April. Right. So he's not 32 until the draft next year.

[B]

Right.

[A]

But he's also with the ups and downs that he's had and the markets he's played in and you've watched how he handles interviews and like he's gotten into it with different people about different things. Dude, he can handle here. I think he can handle this market. I think he knows how to be a quarterback in New York. I am not sure that either of the guys tap to be the starters here this coming season. I'm not sure yet that either of them have that. And if we go back, how many have had that? Rogers was fine to handle it, but he just didn't have the play to back it up, so it didn't matter. Daniel Jones actually handled it, you know, I thought pretty well. Wasn't a good enough player. But he didn't, he didn't actually ever cave under the trash talk or any. He did pretty well. But generally speaking, we know that's a real thing you have to think about. Can you handle what it takes? I think Baker Mayfield, he is a big time sort of quarterback. I mean, I know now I'm getting like, you know, all the way fantasy land. I know this sounds like a bit of a reach, but there is a certain genesis quoi, a swag like appeal that like in the lineage of Namath. I don't hate Mayfield as a Jet. I like, I like the feel of him. I like the cut of his jib for the Jets.

The only negative is, is that I, I don't think MetLife is a nice enough stadium for him to live.

[A]

No, you can't live there. He's not, he's not living there. No. They'd have to do a lot of work. Yeah, he'd sooner live in the Red Bull Stadium. He's not living there. Well, please. Now, now the real. Really the only thing that worries me, if I'm a Jets fan and I'm curious how you guys, you know, Jet fans would feel about this, you just. This never works. Like you, like Don mentioned, it's been a while now. Well, it's been, it's been a long, long time since it almost worked.

And it always almost works.

It always almost works. And that. This is why you buy into a curse. Why didn't it work with Testaverde? Because he tears his Achilles Week 1 in 99 when everybody thinks they're going to go to the super bowl, he gets hurt. Far. What happens to Roger? Hurt. Farve hurt. Like it, it could have worked, but these guys got hurt. But.

[A]

And the scary part is, even though he has been pretty healthy, this, you know, 32 is pretty young in this day of, of NFL quarterbacks.

Let me see.

And here's the least games Baker has ever played in a season is 12. Okay, so he plays.

And that was probably 22. And he was.

[A]

It was between the two teams. That's right. So the guy plays, he doesn't miss games. But you get hurt, you get a lower leg injury, God forbid, something like that. At 32, it still is a problem.

[B]

Vinny Testaverde got hurt. He was 36. Favre got hurt. He was 39. How old was Rogers? 39 when he got hurt, you'd really have to think you're cursed if you trade for Baker Mayfield, he gets hurt at 32. Like older quarterbacks get hurt. That happens. You're taking that chance. You'd be getting a guy, I wouldn't say in his prime, but damn close. Not where you're holding your breath going, I know these guys. 32, he's going to get hurt. We felt that with Rogers. We felt that towards the end with Testaverde and certainly with Favre. Like he didn't think of Farve's age because he played forever. But you know what? 39 year old quarterbacks get hurt. That happens. And the Fitzpatrick thing, that was just. He was not that great a quarterback to begin with. He just had a great year. So it has worked. It's just that the damn age of these guys just never worked out. But this just. It makes too much sense. What do you think?

Like, so do I think it's going to happen? No, I'd still lean towards probably not. But this, this is way more realistic than I think the Joe Burrow or really when, when Favre was first thrown out, it was like, yeah, give me a break. And then all of a sudden it happened.

You're right. You're right. This, I'd say on the surface, this is more realistic than when Farve started. Real quick, before we talk to the

storying out there, where are the other places that could legitimately also want to get in this game? The Vikings are unsure, but they think they could have something. They think they could have a Well, I don't know what they believe in Kyler, but they think J.J. mcCarthy could be something. Cleveland, I suppose is always in the conversation.

Oh yeah, but they're not going. Although, you know, you never know.

The good news is we're going to get to LaGuardia. But the bad news is they have an hour and a half lockdown due to. Due to weather. So I thought, can we move the plane back another seven feet, open the door again so I can go back to the bar and have. No, we have to sit there for an hour without moving. Very frustrating. By the way, we got home safely.

And for the record, Danny, consider yourself lucky. These days you hear stories about people getting stuck on the tarmac and ends up being four and a half, five hours.

And flying out of LaGuardia, by the way, is like when I used to take lightning, lightning loops as a kid. I mean, it is like, you know, watch out for the Statue of Liberty, duck behind City field, drop out, drop like a rock. Drop out like a rock the last thousand feet and hit the brakes or you'll be in Flushing back. It is an adventure. But listen, Baker was my fantasy quarterback the last two years. So as Iceman said, that man could be my wingman anytime. He's got the moxie, he's got the arm, he's got the balls. If I'm about to say that he runs, he scrambles. He. The reason his production was down last year is because they had two top of the line running backs they developed and he didn't have, quite frankly, have to throw the ball as much. And half the wide receivers like Evans were out half the year. But, you know, all of a sudden you hit tight ends like Kyle Otten. He makes stars out of wide Receivers. The third wide receiver suddenly comes out of nowhere and he's catching 30 or 40 passes. I don't know if he's top five quarterback, but he's definitely in the conversation for the second table, top 10 because he just has everything you need. I would trade him for Aaron Rodgers and my two first round to my other two quarterbacks on the roster for Baker Mayfield. And I would cut off both my pinky toes just to throw it in.

And I think you won't even have to do that because again, you now have the privilege, privilege of paying the guy $50 million a year. See, that's why I think this can happen because now he's upset Tampa doesn't know if they want to pay him. I, I think this has a real shot of taking place here. Now, originally just bet just on the information on the call said the Tampa Bay won't trade him. They may not have no choice. I mean, if he doesn't want to sign there, if he gets really ticked off about the negotiations.

[A]

But it sounds like he's playing.

[B]

No, he's. Because he's under contract, he's got a play and he could get franchise too. But if he makes enough of a stink, they might be like, listen, let's get rid of this guy while we can get something for him.

[A]

By the way, being franchised isn't the worst thing in the world either as a quarterback, as Kirk Cousins can tell you.

It worked out for you and you could still get I if 34 years

after he'll end up 34 years old

after two years being franchise. If he wants to go. I think Tampa would probably supply that exit strategy for him. But it's going to cost and it's going to cost the first round pick and it might cost your highest first round pick. What would you do if one of those picks is top 10? You still do it? I do. Let's say Indianapolis just has a complete garbage.

You know. Or do you say, hey, listen, I got, I got a top five pick. I'm going to roll the dice and see if I can't get one of these quarterbacks out of the draft. That might become a possibility too.

If you tell me there's an opportunity to get a real ready to go quarterback. Particularly if you think you have other pieces on a team that are ready to go. Don, you're not kicking. If you had Baker Mayfield as your starter next year, you know what you have next year. Anything else out there you don't know?
