App 301 of the big city Don on and Rosenberg with you till 7 o' clock on a big day. If you're a major league baseball fan, probably football is the only sport and it's starting to rev up a little bit. That doesn't prioritize their deadline where it's like a big deal for fans. This is like Christmas day for baseball fans the way it is. You know, hockey and basketball, when their trade deadline comes, especially if you're a fan of a team that's active, that feels like they might be a trade or two away from really legitimately winning a championship. And the Mets and Yankees both feel that way. And really over the last 24 hours, Alan, I think the Mets and the Yankees have made deals. The Mets just reimagined their bullpen and so they kind of stalled a lot yesterday, especially after their 5 nothing loss, to at least have something positive come from what was a lost day on the field. But now the Yankees have joined the fray and listening to the shows coming in, primarily Jake Aspen, that the feeling was, all right, what's going on with Brian Cashman? What is he doing? Well, it looks like David Bednar is a Yankee. That's the breaking news. Finalizing deal. Jeff Passen had it first. Now it's starting to come down that this is inevitable. Bednar's got to clear a physical closer for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres early in his career. And he's lights out, right, Allen? I mean, he's got all the tools you want. Now the question is, he's no postseason experience. How is he gonna handle New York? You know how difficult it is here in the big city. We found that with Devin Williams coming over from Milwaukee, you know, look at all these cameras. Look at all these people. Every time you blow a save, it's the end of the world. You know, that kind of stuff. We'll see if he can handle it. But from a stat standpoint, Allen, this is a really nice get for the Yankees here and still three more hours to go before the deadline.
Peter Rosenberg
A two time all star with 39 saves for a losing team and 60, I think it was 66 appearances two years ago.
Don La Greca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So, you know, obviously does have the closer stuff. You're right though, about everything else. I mean, closers are tested a lot of times when the pressure's really there. The must win situations. Right. Is the only thing you say is, you know, Pittsburgh has not really been involved in real winning, but he has been successful. He has a high strikeout, low, low walk pitcher, which is exactly what you're looking for. And I'm curious to see this like it. Look, he's also under control for another year and I'm telling you, I think the Yankees are not in the business of going for it for this year. Any move. I was saying this the other day. I think Ty was here, I don't know if you were here. And I said any moves that they make should be about 20, 26. That should always be in mind. And so that's why I think this is interesting because he's in control. He, he's under contract into next season. And that is something that you want because you know, Devin Williams can walk. And Devin Williams, by the way, I mean after last night, that was just only a second blown save. But it was like he's always seems to be teetering. Even in the games that they have survived, it always feels like teetering and they need to make sure that they have somebody that can lock it down. That has been the history of the game.
Don La Greca
You're just not going to know because of the pressure of the situation. Right. I mean, they went out and they got Devin Williams, you know, traded for him. They needed a closer knowing that he could walk at the end of the season. And the general consensus was, you know, he's one of the best closers in baseball outside of what happened in the postseason. Giving up the Alonzo home run. And he's been better lately, but actually lost his job and it seemed like he was a little overwhelmed by the moment. We've seen that happen, so we're going to find out. Araldis Chapman came here, threw the ball 105mph and then all of a sudden the moment got a little bit too big for him. So we're going to have to find out. But right now, agreement with you is an area that they felt like they needed to improve. You can slide Devin Williams into the setup role and if this kid is the way that he's been in San Diego and Pittsburgh a lights out closer. The Yankees really help themselves and also help themselves next year. One thing I'll disagree with you. Unless your, your wording was incorrect about it can't be all about 2026. It's got to still be about 2020.
Peter Rosenberg
You know what I mean when I say this. You're making a move that has 26 in mind. Not, not just this coming year.
Don La Greca
Absolutely. Because I think, you know, there's still a lot of question marks. Is this team championship caliber? I know everybody's thrilled about the victory yesterday, but you see the holes and why what they're doing is not going to be sustainable in the postseason. You know, you know, the blowing elite, you know, coming, you know, coming back and tied the game and, and, and the way they were able to take advantage of the situation, but also blowing a lead, it was so crazy, maddening game and it was a lot of good, a lot of bad came from it. But at the same time, it's all right. Where is this team right now? And the reality is this division is still very winnable after you've seen what's happened with the Blue Jays over the last week. But at the same time, you know, Brian Cashman, he is not going to put the future in jeopardy to sink all his eggs in the 2025 basket. If I can go out and get a player like Bednar who can help me this year, but also can help me next year, great. Because they're going to be looking for a closer anyway because Devin Williams is going to be afraid.
Peter Rosenberg
They knew he'd walk, so he's probably going to walk.
Don La Greca
Or maybe you didn't want him because of how he said, yeah, right. So I think the point is they went out and got themselves a big time closer. We'll see if he can handle the situation. But statistically, it was the best guy on the board after Miller got traded to San Diego. That this was Mason Miller, that that was the pivot that they were going to have to make. And they probably didn't have to give up nearly as much as San Diego had to give up to get Mason Miller.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, and that, and that's the key.
Don La Greca
Cashman's going to be frugal guys, and he always is because, you know, he does hoard these prospects. And that's what's frustrating for Yankee fans because then they come up and they don't live up to the expectations. You know, it's not just, it's not just the Dominguez coming up, it's the Martian. You know, so you're, you have a certain expectation Volpe is going to be the next Derek Jeter, Spencer Jones is raking home runs in aaa. We got to hold on to these guys. Well, they either get landlocked by other moves or they come up and they don't live up to the expectations. That's what frustrates Yankee fans. But at the same time, that hasn't stopped them from making the necessary moves to try to improve. We'll see if it works out. So Mets and Yankees still have a little less than three hours on the clock to get something done. We're hearing a lot of rumors the Mets are in all likelihood going to add another bat. That will not be Harrison Bader. Bader got traded to Philadelphia. So I know the Mets and Yankees were both kind of kicking the tires on that, especially the Mets, because they needed to try to get a better bat than what they have in center field right now. Not only is he off the table, he goes to the rival in Philadelphia. San Diego, as I just mentioned, made some interesting moves. So that affects the Mets. If the Mets get kicked down to the wild card and don't win this division, and even if they do, it might be a Padre team you face somewhere down the road. But we still have, what is it, 2 hours and 53 minutes to get this all sorted out.
Peter Rosenberg
I feel like the Yankees are, though, sending a little bit of a message to the team and to the fan base because it does feel like. And you know when you look, a general manager will look at his team during a season, when you get to a trade deadline and sometimes that team will tell you whether or not you want to invest in this season. Obviously it's the buyers and the sellers, right? We know how that delineation is made for the Yankees are rarely going to be sellers. But you also know it's not really a season to be all in buyers. Why? Well, the Judge injury is just the latest red flag. The injuries to starting pitching like Clark Schmidt and obviously Garrett Cole, that tells you something as well. They will be getting Luis Heal. He's on the mound Sunday. That's a good sign now. But you don't know what you're getting from him and you have no idea what he can give you. But what you do, what you want to do, is you still want to make moves. If you can improve the team because there's so many holes to fill. But the team is telling you this year is not worth it. See, if this year was worth it alone, Chino Suarez would be A Yankee, right? He'd be a Yankee. Yeah, because it's a one year rental. But it's a big bat instead Seattle does it because Seattle's going for it. So there. So it's a different mentality, I think what the Yankees are doing here versus what we're seeing from the Phillies and even from the Mets. Like, like I asked this question, Don, after seeing last night, Ryan Helsley was a hell of a. No pun intended, a hell of a pickup.
Don La Greca
No, it was. And on top of the Rodgers move earlier, they really straight.
Peter Rosenberg
So they got three bullpen pieces already. And I asked the question because it looks like them and the Phillies were going neck and neck on, on the arms race. And after getting Helsley, I thought did the Mets win the arms race? Because everybody, all of the true contenders were, were trying to get the best relievers, build up their bullpen, especially Philadelphia.
Don La Greca
That's their Achilles heel.
Peter Rosenberg
That's their Achilles heel. But at the Mets as well, they wore out their bullpen. They had to refresh it. They have done that. Stearns, I think has done a phenomenal job in refreshing their bullpen and making it formidable. They're not quite done yet. It would be nice for them to get an outfielder. But Don, I asked that question and I'm going to ask you. Do you think the Mets won the.
Don La Greca
Arms race right now? It looks like it. Of what they were able to acquire, they got much better not just in yesterday, but also bringing in Soto to a lefty to help out with the bullpen. They needed to reconstruct it. And on all earmarks are that Holmes is eventually going to join that bullpen.
Peter Rosenberg
And he'll be in the bullpen because.
Don La Greca
There'S no place for him in the postseason in the rotation. And he has not looked good over his last three starts but.
Peter Rosenberg
And he's an experienced bullpen guy.
Don La Greca
Exactly.
Peter Rosenberg
So he knows what he's doing.
Don La Greca
So I think they have now passing just tweeted out and I think Jake might have had this before he left, but Rafael Flores is the guy that gets traded to Pittsburgh for Bednar along with a 19 year old prospect. But Flores is a guy that we had on to promote the Somerset Patriots deal and he had been promoted to aaa.
Peter Rosenberg
Good framer. Right? We talked good framing with him.
Don La Greca
But is that a skill set that you're gonna need once we get the electronic strike zone?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, again, one thing the Yankees have in their is catcher depth.
Don La Greca
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
They got a lot of cat. Remember Ben Rice is a catcher. They had him playing first Right. They could move Escara down now and make Ben Rice more of a full time catcher or backup catcher with Wells and that would be something that they have so many catching prospects that you can make a move like this. You know, you mentioned Spencer Jones and a lot of the talk is that the Yankees are refusing to like teams are asking for him and a lot of moves that they would, they were in on and they have made it clear we're not trading him unless it's Paul Skeens, we're not trading him. And that you might think that that's the wrong thing to do. But I'm telling you that screams even more that they're saying that because this season's roster and this season, everything, all inclusive, meaning the injuries and everything else, is not worth it for us to give up on a high end prospect that maybe in the off season or next season, if you needed to make that, that put you over the top.
Don La Greca
What's interesting about Spencer Jones is this is what frustrates Yankee fans. He's, he's 24 years old, May he'll be 25. So at some point we need to see him.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don La Greca
Now he is not, I think you'll.
Peter Rosenberg
See him this year.
Don La Greca
He has not been an option to be called up despite the fact that he's raking in Triple A.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, yeah, remember he had a sore back. He had back issues.
Don La Greca
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
So they wanted to rest him. I think we're going to see him.
Don La Greca
But because they've had, they've added some, you know, Slater who was in the lineup today, had an RBI adding to the outfield, Rosario adding to the outfield. And a lot of that is because we don't know if Judge is going to be able to play the field once he comes back from this injury. But if a guy's hitting as many home runs at AAA as he's hitting them, is he, is he ready to get called up? And I'm hearing Michael K. Talk about how there are people in the Yankee organization off the record who says they're not sure he can hit major league pitching just yet. So maybe it's a case of they don't believe in him, but there's still enough teams out there that do and they're just going to hold him for the right moment. But if he's here and you didn't trade him for a chance to get better, then the fans are going to want to see him come up as a Yankee and be big time. And you brought it up yesterday. The frustration lies where you build up these prospects and they don't live up to the expectations outside of Judge.
Peter Rosenberg
Yep.
Don La Greca
Is Jones going to be one of those guys? Is Debing as on his way with only eight home runs to being that disappointment? Volpe, who had the big home run last night but also committed his 16th error. You know, that frustration continues. But again, that was a money home run and a big win for the Yankees that they desperately needed. Didn't want to let that one slip away. And that didn't thanks to Volpe hitting that home run to tie the game up at three. So you take the good with the bad there, but still not living up to the expectations. So that's what people want to look at. Mets and Yankees both on the board. We got a fun day today. It's Intern day.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don La Greca
And we talked about National Intern Day. National Intern Day. That our interns here in the summer. Their last week is going to be coming up next week, but Alan and I are both going to be on vacation. So we had a nice little pizza party for them earlier and we promised them that they're all going to get their moment in the sun here on the show. Now all of the interns are here, all five of them, and they're going to get their moment to come into the studio. Now, they're not going to co host and they're not going to take up all the time from us talking about the trade deadline. But we wanted to give them their opportunity to be able to just come in and just want to celebrate them.
Peter Rosenberg
They put in summer working with us.
Don La Greca
You interned, right? I interned at KROC back in the summer of 1990, and it led to everything that ever happened to me.
Peter Rosenberg
I interned with the New York Islanders. 1995, the lockout season.
Don La Greca
And how did it work out for us?
Peter Rosenberg
Led to.
Don La Greca
Led to Newsday and so opportunities like this. So we want to be able to say goodbye to them and give them a chance to kind of just introduce themselves to the audience and what's lying ahead for them. And a couple of them have some sports.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, no, there's the hot takes are flying.
Don La Greca
We had one that refused to come on the air unless it was after the trade deadline. Because he wants to be able to analyze things. Post.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah.
Don La Greca
And we had others that just wanted to get it out of the way, but some really wanted to dive into this. And we're looking forward to it. But we gave them pizza today. What was the name of the Pizza Limited. Good. Right. I had the meat lovers. I think there's some Prosciutt on there? I'm not sure.
Peter Rosenberg
There was definitely.
Don La Greca
I just ate it. It was good.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, you're. You're making this sound like they're. They're like children. Like we had.
Don La Greca
To me they are. We had a 7 years old. 57 years old.
Peter Rosenberg
So cute.
Don La Greca
So the.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don La Greca
You have to understand something. I'm grown men. Seven years old.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don La Greca
They're supposed to be my children. If everything's the way they're supposed to be, my kids should be their age, not 7. A 57 year old should not have 7 year old twins. A 57 year old should have 22 year old.
Peter Rosenberg
But you're a virile man.
Don La Greca
They break through when they break through. Right. You know, you just, you keep handing off at the goal line until. Until the referee puts their hands up.
Peter Rosenberg
Just tap it in.
Don La Greca
Yeah, but there was a. I got to tell you, it was a. It was a whole life of defensive holding penalties to give you a fresh set of down. Because it wasn't just the four fourth down. No wait, we got a defensive hold. First and goal. Let's do it again. So there's at least seven or eight defensive holdings, see. But eventually got through, scored the touchdown, finally broke through. But if I got to pull the.
Peter Rosenberg
Goalie every now and then, get the empty.
Don La Greca
You know, if I had the Air Coryell offense from back in the day with the Chargers and then these would.
Peter Rosenberg
Have been my something. You're looking at the greatest show on.
Don La Greca
Turf right here because how old you guy collect like what, 22, 20. Some of them can't. 22, 20.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don La Greca
21.
Peter Rosenberg
There we go.
Don La Greca
This should be the age of my children. So if I'm, if I'm talking about.
Peter Rosenberg
The age of my children.
Don La Greca
Yeah, the age of your children. Well, you're kind of both way.
Peter Rosenberg
You're a nine year old children.
Don La Greca
All right, so listen, Alan, there was, there were several different drives. There was a, there was a first quarter touchdown and there was a fourth quarter.
Peter Rosenberg
We had two early scores in the first quarter and then we had one before the half. We didn't need it, but we scored anyway. We love it. That was our favorite touchdown.
Don La Greca
You meandered through the third quarter and then late in the fourth you scored again and we're all winning.
Peter Rosenberg
That was attack on score.
Don La Greca
So we're going to have some fun with that. 4:30. We've got the, the Thursday rewrite which has got a baseball kind of theme to it.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm excited for this one.
Don La Greca
Anthony Pusick will be joining us coming up at 6 with ENN. But let's get to your busy phone calls as we keep an eye on what's happening with the MLB trade deadline, which is less than three hours away. 1-800-919-3776. Let's start with David and Elizabeth. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Dave? What up, Don? What up, Han? You know what's so crazy? Real quick, before we get into my next point, I got a question for both of you, because both of you used to work at msg. Well, you know, Han still does work with the Knicks.
Peter Rosenberg
So does Don.
Don La Greca
I'm an MSG employee.
Peter Rosenberg
Don's a Devil's play by play man. On msg.
Don La Greca
On msg. Oh, nice. Oh, so Don still got his credentials to get in the building? You know what? You know what? So you know what's David the only.
Peter Rosenberg
Man in the Tri State area that doesn't know that you got the devil job?
Don La Greca
You find out? No, he knows Double job. He didn't associate it with msg, but I. I found out this is big.
Peter Rosenberg
What's big?
Don La Greca
I don't have to hand in my MSG credential because I'm going to need it to go across the street and stuff. So I could still, you know, I could still swing by those Nick games.
Peter Rosenberg
We could still. If we needed to see a show, we could.
Don La Greca
Oh, well, listen, I don't want to. I don't want to, you know, blow up our spot here, but, yes, if Metallica's playing at the Garden, I might be able to find my way in there. But.
Peter Rosenberg
Go, go.
Don La Greca
Go ahead, David. So we're. We're both still with msg. Awesome. Appreciate it. Gentlemen. There's a pizzeria on the corner. Huh? I'm forgetting the name of it. Oh, my God. Every time I'm in Manhattan and I'm coming down corner, where I gotta corner. It's on the corner of the Garden. Like if the Garden is to our level, that's. That's raised, right? It's not a famous raise, but it's a raise.
Peter Rosenberg
No, not raised. No, no, I know what he's talking about. It's called suprema, right? It's 8th Avenue and 30. 31st.
Don La Greca
8Th and 31st.
Peter Rosenberg
Isn't that.
Don La Greca
That's. That's. That's one of them. No, I think it's Bravo or something with a B. I think I have.
Peter Rosenberg
I have not.
Don La Greca
You ever tried it?
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Don La Greca
Oh, my God. Their slices are amazing.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, you say so, but yeah.
Don La Greca
I wanted to see if you guys ever been in that pizzeria? Because you guys work right next door. You know, I thought that you guys would go. But it's a good piece to make, gentlemen.
Peter Rosenberg
We'll definitely give that a shot. Yeah.
Don La Greca
I know, Han, you're probably, you know, pretty happy with some of the acquisitions you guys made today, but, Don, I'm really happy with what we did today with Stern, but the question I have for you, Don, is this. Where do you think Stern and our organization should be focused on to make a good playoff push so we could be competitive and maybe we could, you know, take the wild, wild west, which is the nl? I would like to see another bat. So if they could find a way to get another center field or another.
Peter Rosenberg
Bat, you would have liked Bader, right? Bader would have been a good.
Don La Greca
Nice. Because he had been here before. Remember, he had all those home runs for the Yankees a couple of years ago when they beat the Guardians in the first round. That would have been a nice thing to have again. I don't think it's the end of the world. I said from the very beginning, first, second, and third, most important things were addressing that bullpen, and they did that. So now you start to get, all right, well, if we can. If we get another bat, is there another starter? A possibility. So these are things I'd like. I do. I will be a little disappointed, I'll be honest with you. If the Mets are done now, I'm not saying there's got to be a home run, something that blows me away, but I'll be a little disappointed if you're telling me this is it, because that'll leave me a little bit empty as far as not having that bat. Not maybe addressing the rotation a little bit, considering the health issues that they've had with those guys and the length of that you get from those guys, I would. I would like to see them be in on something else.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I am sure that's probably going to be the next. You know, before we get to the deadline, the efforts will be to find one more bat and hater ended up going to the Philly again. The Phillies and the Mets have been neck and neck right now.
Don La Greca
Well, because honestly, I just. I have this feeling that the winner of this division is going to have an excellent chance to win the World Series. I. I feel you got to win your division. Can you get there through a wild card? Yeah, sure you could.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. But you're taxing your bullpen. You're taxing your starters. Like, by doing that.
Don La Greca
I love The Mets chances against any team in the National League, you saw the way they play against the Dodgers. All right, the Padres didn't do, they didn't do that great against the Padres, but still I like their chances in the postseason. Coming out as a division winner and trying to be one of the top two teams, that to me is going to be important because I want to try to avoid the wild card. If I'm going to have to play the wild card, at least give me those games at home. But I'd like to still believe that they can be one of the top two teams. And right now when you look at the national league, the Mets 62 and 47 flat footed tie with Philadelphia. That's two games, three back of the lost column of Milwaukee, one back of the lost column of the Dodgers as far as being one of those tops. So right now there are still a game back of being a top two seed and avoiding the wild card. That's what I'd like to see them do. And if they can do that, I think that really increases their chances of going to the World Series.
Peter Rosenberg
I love the fact that they are in a deadlock right now, right Ty? Because this does really put a little more emphasis on the deadline because it's almost as if who, who makes the right moves at the deadline to fill whatever holes you need that gets to where you want to be. Like you said, getting the division, getting the higher seed, the top two seed. So that you are avoiding the wild card round. Like that's all, like that's what makes us. It's not, you're not chasing or you're not being chased. It's deadlock. We won't know trade deadline results. You'll never know them until October. You're not going to know them until.
Don La Greca
And sometimes the one you yawned at turns out to be the guy gives.
Peter Rosenberg
You the biggest inning you ever needed.

Yeah, he was. Fred.
D
I don't think any relationship, but that's the relationship.
Peter Rosenberg
But not Greta. No, Greta's. I don't think Greta's related.
D
No, it was a song came out in 2021. They came out. They came in the scene a few years ago. They're kind of like the. Everyone called them, like, the knockoff Led Zeppelin.
Peter Rosenberg
Little vibe. Okay.
Don La Greca
Yeah.
D
But I always stuck with them. And then that album means a lot to me, just because I kind of grew up on my dad's music and really didn't follow it into a lot of new music until Greta Van Fleet came along. I remember that album Battle at Garden's Gate came out during the Pandemic, and it was kind of the first album that I, like, waited for. Like, something that my dad like.
Don La Greca
Oh.
D
I waited for this album to come out.
Don La Greca
What was your dad's music?
D
I mean, a lot of classic rock. I mean, big Zeppelin guy, big Huey Lewis fan. Jimmy Buffett.
Don La Greca
Wow. Wow. He just threw my head. Just went back and forth like I was watching tennis. He threw three.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, classic rock, you know, like Led Zeppelin. Okay. Led Zeppelin.
Don La Greca
Huey Lewis.
Peter Rosenberg
Huey Lewis. That's over here, right? That's up here.
Don La Greca
That's very eclectic, but I like it.
Peter Rosenberg
But Dad's like us. He's like us. Right. We're all over the map, too.
Don La Greca
So we wanted to give each intern a chance to have their moment on the air. So what is first and foremost on your mind right now?
D
First and foremost on my mind. I think just first off, thank you to you guys and everyone here at GKB for allowing us, all of our interns, to be on the air today. Celebrate National Intern Day. I mean, it's been so much fun. Of course, when you find out you're going to intern for ESPN New York, your first thought is, this is amazing. And then you come here and we're on week seven of eight, and this has blown all the expectations out of the waters for what we've been able to do. You know, whether it's on the marketing side, whether it's working with the shows and the content to create stuff in that avenue has been just incredible.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, you're a New Jersey guy.
D
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. And you go to Penn State.
Don La Greca
Yep.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay. You have your own podcast.
D
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay, so you want to be an on air guy, because I know out of the five of you, not all want to be on air, but you're one. That's why you let off, because you are somebody that hopes to do this one day. What is your podcast about? And are you also at Penn State doing things like this to get the experience that you're going to need?
Don La Greca
Yeah.
D
So it's through Penn State. So I'm with Comradio, which is Penn State's student run Internet radio station. And my show last semester was from Monday to 3 to 3:30. It was called the Motorsports Minute. And a big auto racing guy. So kind of filling that niche demographic of talking about what's going on in the world of auto racing.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
D
And then also on this and then beyond that in the station, doing a lot of play by play because that's probably my dream aspiration.
Peter Rosenberg
So you call some of the college games?
D
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay. What sports have you called?
D
I have called football, hockey, basketball, field hockey, volleyball, soccer.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay. That's what you pretty much done it all. Yeah. Make sure you run the gamut, get all the experience you can. Your favorite to call is I think.
D
Just for the spectacle and because I know it the most. Football. I think I called the white out game against Washington last year. And just being there, feeling the press box literally shake is one of the coolest things in the world. Probably the sport that I've fallen in love with the most though is volleyball. I think especially with Penn State winning the national championship last year. Katie Schumacher collie being the head coach, battling breast cancer during that time.
Peter Rosenberg
What a story.
Don La Greca
Incredible story.
Peter Rosenberg
You know whose daughter is going to be there, I think next season?
D
Patrick Ewing.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
D
And Joe Jarovicious daughter. Both of her daughters there as well.
Peter Rosenberg
Done so again, Gracie, my middle daughter, 17 year old, she plays volleyball. And what I've learned in going to these national tournaments is so many professional athletes, NFL, NBA, daughters play volleyball. And it's unreal. Like you just turn around and everywhere you look there's a former professional athlete watching his daughter play. It's one of the fastest growing sports among women. And it's incredibly like entertaining to watch because unlike the men's game, which is basically bump, set, spike, you know, point.
D
Over 70 mile an hour serve, you.
Peter Rosenberg
Can'T stop that so fast. This is. It's a lot of back and forth and it's a lot of hustle and a lot of effort. It's a lot of fun. So. And Penn State's one of the tops, obviously. Wisconsin, those big Nebraska's a tremendous conference. Oh, it's unreal.
Don La Greca
And that's gonna be.
Peter Rosenberg
That's a fun sport to call.
Don La Greca
But most of you have difficult too because you can't possibly describe every volley because it goes so fast. So how do you do that?
D
I kind of sit back on t. I've done both TV and radio for volleyball.
Peter Rosenberg
This is a great experience for tv.
D
You kind of just sit back and watch it play out, give some stats. You Might mention a few names. One of my broadcasting idols is a guy by the name of Paul Sunderland who played volleyball in college and now does. He's done NBC, espn, Big Ten Network. And the way that he's able to describe it is just sit back, let the tv, let the picture do the talking and then kind of describe it as it's going on. Whether. And that can be for both someone that's new to the sport or someone that's a diehard fan of the sport. For radio it's a bit hard. You kind of just have to go.
Peter Rosenberg
With the flow as most you can though. But obviously you got to keep up with it.
D
Yeah, radio is really the same regardless of the sport because I think you're, you're calling it. You got to call the location, you got to say who has the ball, the score time and score. Everything. That is the fundamentals of radio, of radio play.
Peter Rosenberg
You're learning. That's a great, like you're lucky because you're, you're getting this hands on experience while you're in school calling big, you know, big time college games. Which, which is, which is great for you. Now you became a subject on I think the morning show.
D
I did.
Peter Rosenberg
Because you have a special skill. Don, do you know about this skill?
Don La Greca
No.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, Don, you'll love this. I want to hear because you know, you know Stump Rothenberg, he has an answer for everything. Sometimes he Googles, sometimes he doesn't.
Don La Greca
Right. More times.
Peter Rosenberg
And you always feel like you could challenge him. But Jack, Don, ask Jack. Oh, who want like just come up with a Super Bowl. Name one super bowl off the top of you.
Don La Greca
All right, well, Super Bowl 5.
D
Well, 5. The Colts beat the Cowboys. It was off of a game winning field goal by o'. Brien.
Don La Greca
Jim o'.
D
Brien. And the MVP was Chuck Howley who was played at West Virginia and is the only MVP of the losing team or the only losing team.
Don La Greca
Cowboy. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Isn't that incredible?
Don La Greca
That is amazing.
Peter Rosenberg
Like just throw another one out. It's just random. All right, Super Bowl 21.
Don La Greca
There you go.
D
Well, 21. The Giants beat the Broncos. It was the Giants first Super bowl and I believe. Does Phil Sims still have the record for highest completion percentage by a small.
Don La Greca
Do you remember what it was? Not the completion percentage, but total passes and completions?
D
I don't know. The total pass, was it around 87%?
Don La Greca
Probably. Well, whatever 21 for 25 is, yeah, it's probably incredible.
Peter Rosenberg
Completion percentage.
Don La Greca
That's pretty amazing. I heard about this because Dan Grasso was asking him, location. And who played halftime. Like, Dan wouldn't have it. I'm impressed by this.
Peter Rosenberg
How could you not.
Don La Greca
Not only.
Peter Rosenberg
He gives.
Don La Greca
You just mentioned he wasn't even born.
Peter Rosenberg
He just gives you the Google. Like, that's the. Because what would Google give you when you. When you just. Who won Super Bowl?
Don La Greca
That.
Peter Rosenberg
Whatever. It gives you a little synopsis. He gave you a synopsis. He doesn't just tell you who won. He gives you a synopsis. Now, who sang the national anthem? Get out of here. I kick you out of the room if you start asking that question that.
Don La Greca
Everybody knows is valuable.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, yes.
Don La Greca
Whitney Houston.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes. But still like that.
Don La Greca
That's very.
Peter Rosenberg
That's good stuff.
Don La Greca
So I wish you nothing but success.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you. Well done, Jack Rachinsky. Yeah. So you are on your way. Your first experience on the air on New York. How does it feel?
Don La Greca
Good.
D
It feels awesome. I mean, I remember my dad's probably listening, and I think his office is having a listening party right now for this.
Don La Greca
Give him a shout out. Shout out.
D
Jay Rachinsky, shout out. Team law in Clark, New Jersey. I know you guys are all listening. I really appreciate all the support. And I remember, like, driving to kindergarten with my dad and his blue and gold 2004 Mercury Mountaineer, and we listen to Mike and Mike in the morning and can't believe it. Fifteen years later, look at this. I'm here.
Peter Rosenberg
That's awesome. Now you're here. You know, and we won't hold it against your dad for making you, like, you know, a Penguins fan in front of Don here. A Jersey guy rooting for the penguins, Don McGregor, the voice of the dragons.
Don La Greca
That's from Dr. Occupante, my dentist.
Peter Rosenberg
Occupante. Of course. Yeah.
Don La Greca
And then he decided to be. Well, listen, they're going nowhere, and they really should have traded Sid, in my opinion.
Peter Rosenberg
Should have.
Don La Greca
But they didn't. So now you're stuck.
Peter Rosenberg
And now you have Aaron Rodgers. So good luck with that, too.
D
Thank you. Wow.
Don La Greca
All right.
D
Yeah. I'm just saying, it was 21 years between 84 and 05, between Lemieux and Crosby. 21 years since 05 will be next year. Gavin McKenna, Penn Stater, consensus number one overall.
Peter Rosenberg
He's got it all figured out. All right.
D
Just saying starting might align.
Don La Greca
And since you went to Penn State, you must have a working knowledge of Greg Buttle. That's, like, probably a prerequisite, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
C
Yes.
Don La Greca
You can't move forward. The thing that impressed me about this is all the other interns on the other side of the glass. Like, literally cheering.
Peter Rosenberg
Cheering right now.
Don La Greca
Like, I've never seen, like, fist pumps. There's such a tight un.
Peter Rosenberg
They are adorable.
Don La Greca
There's no backstabbing, fun little. They're all rooting for one another. That's really cool, man.
Peter Rosenberg
That's what you like.
Don La Greca
Good karma did a great job selecting you.
Peter Rosenberg
Well done. Be hard to be hard to match this group.
Don La Greca
Jackman best of all.
Peter Rosenberg
Wait so much.
Don La Greca
Very good job.
Peter Rosenberg
Well done.
Don La Greca
Well, more of the interns a little bit later on. No trades. Didn't. Since that conversation was happening. Because we can actually multitask. Okay. We can talk to one of the interns and still be on top of what's going on.
Peter Rosenberg
There's a lot going on.
Don La Greca
Let's talk to Griffin in Connecticut. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Griffin? Hey, guys, before I get to the trade that the eight made, I have.
D
Some update that I heard for the Yankees and Mets, if you want to hear.
Don La Greca
According to Joe Sherman, he doesn't think.
D
The Yankees are done.
Don La Greca
He still thinks they might get a.
D
Starter or a reliever. And the Mets are high on Kendrick Mullins for the Baltimore Oreos.
Don La Greca
They've been in contact with him yesterday and today, so they want to try to see if they could get a deal done with him. Well, he's the guy that, I guess it was yesterday made the big play stealing a home runaway the day before. They have to make another deal for bat. And I'm not surprised to hear reports that neither of these teams are done.
Peter Rosenberg
So Anthony Decomo is reporting that Mullins is going to the Mets.
Don La Greca
Oh, now, okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, so we'll wait for that to be fully confirmed. But yeah, that, that, that's not nothing.
Don La Greca
Yeah, passing has it now as well. He credits Anthony Decomo, the Mets, by the way, Griffin.
Peter Rosenberg
Well done by Griffin.
Don La Greca
Cedric Mullins bringing it to the table. So that, that. And that's. That's not nothing. I mean, he's. He's a good defender and I like the fact that you're bringing. You're not. You're not done. I told you I would be disappointed if they were done. Taking a look at his stats so far this year, 15 home runs, 49 RBIs. Spatting 229. Historically, not a great batting average. Guy's got a.250 batting average for his career, but he has hit 30 home runs. That was back in 2021, the only time he made the all star team. But otherwise he's got, you know, a pretty big bat. Listen, and he can defend. And here's the thing, he's an upper. Much better than what you had at seven.
Peter Rosenberg
Absolutely.
Don La Greca
Tyrone Taylor's fine and he can come in for depth off the bench. But much like the move the Yankees made with McMahon at third, the stats may not blow you away, but it's much better than what they were getting out of center field. So we didn't see what the Mets gave up. The Mets did get a center fielder, but that's what I'm seeing so far from Jeff Passon. I guess Tacoma will eventually have more information.
Peter Rosenberg
Raymond Gomez, Anthony Nunez, Chandler Marsh going back to Baltimore.
Don La Greca
What was the first one I saw?
Peter Rosenberg
Nunez, Marsh and Gomez. Okay, so.
Don La Greca
And that's the Nunez that's actually hurt right now, too. So, yeah, I didn't give up anything that I think hurts right now. The Mets are going to be more apt to be maybe sacrificing their future than the Yankees are. Because quite honestly, I don't know if you agree or disagree with this. I think the Mets are closer. Even though the National League is tougher. I have more faith that the Mets can make a run than the Yankees make a run. Is that fair?
Peter Rosenberg
I do. Yeah. I firmly believe that. The Yankees also Jack Curry saying the Yankees picked up another relief pitcher, Jake Bird from the Rockies.
Don La Greca
Okay, another. So they got a nice thing going with the Rockies there.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, the Rockies sending them. Yeah.
Don La Greca
So we're on top of all this. More things coming down. Mets may not be done. Maybe a starter, maybe a reliever. Yankee still with one work to do as we now have 2 hours and 18 minutes left of the trade deadline. It is Don. It is Han. It is Rosenberg. We got lots coming up here on ESPN New York. Don La Greca
Should fit like this.
Peter Rosenberg
My jeans need to check a lot of boxes.
Don La Greca
Fit first, trend second. They need to go with whatever I'm.

Don La Greca
I'm not feeling the music of the interns. I'm. I listen. I love what they're doing. I love the work they're doing.
Peter Rosenberg
This is an emotional song.
Don La Greca
Whose song is this? They didn't even turn the mic on.
C
Empire State of Mind. This is not my song.
Don La Greca
All right, this is. This is actually what we do. Jake song.
C
He did the wrong song.
Don La Greca
All right, so this was.
Peter Rosenberg
This was. This was Gabby's song.
Don La Greca
Was it, Lily? There we go.
C
That's more like it. That is more like it.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, that's different.
Don La Greca
All right, so Lily Abel is here, and this is her song again. I'm not a fan, but it makes a lot more sense than whatever the garbage was playing before. So, Gabby, get ready. Get ready, Gabby. Because when it's your turn, you better change the song back up again.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, my goodness, Donna.
Don La Greca
Because I'm not. I'm in no mood for country.
Peter Rosenberg
Worse.
C
That was not the song.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, any mood for it. So, Lily, you go to Indiana?
C
Yes, I do.
Peter Rosenberg
Hoosier.
C
Hoosier. For the first time 60 years, we have a mascot. Hoosier. The Bison.
Peter Rosenberg
Who's the Bison?
Don La Greca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Why?
C
You know, we used to be a farm girl, and now we're finally good at football. So good.
Don La Greca
Finally good at football.
Peter Rosenberg
Finally good at football. Did you go to any games? Last year, because I know that was probably a hard ticket to get, honestly.
C
I went to two. I did the football pass for the first time because I didn't expect the outcome. But it was hard to get tickets. Everything was sold out. You went from getting $20 tickets to now 200 tickets.
Don La Greca
Wow.
Peter Rosenberg
Isn't that amazing? Like a Big Ten football team, just normally dormant. Not really a perennial contender. Have a great year like they did last year. Their coach is terrific.
C
Yeah. Signetti seriously saved us. I was not expecting that at all. No, no one, really.
Peter Rosenberg
No one saw that coming, Literally.
C
And no one saw it coming. So, I mean, having college game day there, having all these people to come and support, it was amazing.
Peter Rosenberg
And it helps when you know, oh, it makes you. Basketball. The basketball wasn't.
C
But basketball wasn't great this year. But having one sport.
Don La Greca
So is football your sport?
C
I guess so now.
Don La Greca
So what is your sport then?
C
I mean, personally, me, I love watching football, but Hoosiers are good at basketball. Usually.
Peter Rosenberg
Usually, yeah. But not recently.
C
Not recently.
Peter Rosenberg
My good friend Mike Woodson tried to revive the program.
C
Tried.
Peter Rosenberg
Things did not go well, and now they have to try again.
C
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, how's this experience been for you? We were just talking with Jack, and he was. For the camaraderie you guys have built. None of you knew each other when they started? None of us knew each other seven weeks ago. Right.
C
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So what. What has it been about the group you've been working with and the internship experience here that has created what is. Seems like you guys are gonna be friends when you go back to your school. You're gonna stay in touch.
C
Walk. Walking in here. I mean, I don't have a big. I'm not. This is all new to me, so walking into a radio and speaking on the radio. We have two of our other interns who are used to it, and they are so supportive there. I know they're always there for me. I can ask them anything. We all help each other out, so support each other. I feel like that's the more important part. But, yeah, I'll definitely always talk to them. The internship in general. Everyone is so kind to us, you know, gkb, the values are, you know, being supportive, being free there for each other. And I think that walking the office, everyone says hi to you. There's not one person that will not sit at our intern table to talk to us during lunch.
Peter Rosenberg
The cool table is the cool kids table.
C
Yeah. Yeah. We see it every day yesterday, so, I mean, all welcoming.
Peter Rosenberg
So Jack wanted. Wants to be on the air.
C
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
That's not your goal in, in this career. What do you want to be?
C
Yeah. So advertising, media, brand partnership, make the money. Yeah. I mean, I love people person, love talking to people, sales. So I don't have an exact path right now, but I do love, you know, selling products, partnerships, brand marketing. But this is also. Is awesome to me too. So this is like, this could be a cool career.
Don La Greca
So you are from the D.C. area and now living in Indiana because you're going to school there.
Peter Rosenberg
Commander's fan Rosenberg should be here. They would talk us through the break.
Don La Greca
The one consistent thing about the month of July is he hasn't been here for all of it. Today is July 31st. We celebrate the trade deadline and the fact that July is over. And we're all very upset about that. But what is your impression of New York?
C
I love it. I mean, I've been coming here as a kid forever. And most important part, black and white, cookie and a bagel. Those are honestly, I mean, what's better than that being being in the city of bagels for me is. But I love it here.
Peter Rosenberg
But she learned quick, right, Don?
Don La Greca
I know, right?
Peter Rosenberg
And it had the pizza today. So, you know, you had the best pizza.
Don La Greca
That's good.
C
That was amazing.
Peter Rosenberg
That was good pizza.
Don La Greca
That is very, very good pizza.
C
I love New York. There's always something going on. You're walking down the street, you'll see things that you will never expect to say.
Don La Greca
Now, he's true.
C
Good and bad.
Don La Greca
We still have today and then the rest of next week. But what's been the highlight so far of internship. Yeah.
C
Oh, I would honestly say today. But this, this has been an amazing week. We know we got. We got some hats from Rick yesterday. We had some mascots come in randomly toenail clippings. I mean, random things going on in the office.
Peter Rosenberg
We got to get to the bottom of this. We might have, by the way.
C
Oh.
Peter Rosenberg
But those listening that actually care about this story, which I cannot believe how many people care about the toenail gate.
Don La Greca
And we're going to talk about that.
Peter Rosenberg
We might have video evidence of who.
C
We may have security cam footage.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don La Greca
It's not what you think. It's not.
Peter Rosenberg
No. It is not who you think.
Don La Greca
But I think this has been exposed.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don La Greca
Wow. Yeah. So we're going to have big news. Big news.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
C
Emergency press conference later.
Don La Greca
But really, it was a pleasure to meet you and get to know you. So I'm glad that this was a highlight.
C
Amazing.
Don La Greca
And thank you so much. And this goes For Jack again, goes for you and everybody else that's going to come on. Stay in touch with us. We want to be able to follow what happens with your career. And if we were able to be a small part of that, I'm really happy about that.
C
Both are a big part of my internship program. The experience has been amazing, and I want to thank you both for having me on.
Peter Rosenberg
Most people, more importantly, let's get her hired so she can make us some money.
C
Yes, please.
Peter Rosenberg
Really? She wants to sell. She wants to market a station. Let's do it.
Don La Greca
All right. We want hustlers in turn to employee right away. We'll see. No pressure out there, but I'm gonna.
C
Be a senior, so next up, there we go.
Don La Greca
Good luck in your senior year.
Peter Rosenberg
Well done.
C
Amazing.
Don La Greca
Lily Abel, intern number two of the five. We got three more to go. We'll spread out throughout the rest of the show. And I just love the fact they're all. At one point during the interview, they all Justin Bieber heart.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, yeah.
Don La Greca
Which was annoying, but it was what it did show, though, how tight they already.
Peter Rosenberg
How about this, though? Buying them hats.
Don La Greca
I gotta be honest.
C
Oh, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
What is that?
Don La Greca
I was fine with Gabby doing it. Jack did it, and I got to take him aside and say, listen, you've had a perfect day so far.
Peter Rosenberg
He do it too.
Don La Greca
But, man, you. You. You pulled the Volpe, man. You hit a couple of home runs, but one went through the wickets there.
Peter Rosenberg
But look at it. They're all there.
Don La Greca
Jake. It just looked. Look, Jake looked more comfortable doing it than Jack. But anyway, that was. I just thought that was pretty cool. So thank you, Lily, for that and. And congratulations on everything that you got. Absolutely. Because you can have a great career.
C
Thank you so much.
Don La Greca
Rock Riggio and left hand Ben Shields goes back to Colorado for Jake Bird.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Didn't give up a lot again. Bird is it. Look, you know, when you have. Whenever moves are made by a team for the deadline, especially this close to the deadline, a lot of times you're going to get that initial reaction of, okay, there's a guy, there's a guy. Jake Bird's a guy, right? Would you agree? He's a guy.
Don La Greca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, you're going to have him there. You got him. You got Fernando Cruz, you've got Tim Hill. You're just trying to get some guys. He is not somebody that's going to blow you with his numbers. You know, you bring him in, you hope he's useful in the kind of spot you want, and you're getting him off a team that's losing and you're hoping that it rejuvenates him. He's not a. He's a guy that starts the season off well and then little by little kind of like dissipates. And I don't know if that's because the team sucks, but you know, like let's. We don't want to overreact to some things. This is just, it's an arm. They're trying to replenish some of the arms in their bullpen. But you have heard this be said about the Yankees and I'm telling you and you heard Boone say it. Do we have the sound when Boone's talking about the trade deadline and he's bringing up names of players who are coming back from injury that they are looking at as additions as well. And that screams to me we're not really going to do anything too dramatic because we have guys coming back from injury that are supposed to be part of the process, part of the plan and that's what they're and heel is the first guy, Luis, he's going to pitch for the first time for the Yankees on Sunday. That's. That's a return that you want to watch because that could add a quality starter to a group that obviously a starting group that has been injury play.
Don La Greca
This was not. We didn't have the audio, but we have the call. Boone said. We're going to improve, improve in some areas. I do feel like hopefully with some of the people on the horizon coming back for us with the heels, lighters, cruises and Yarboroughs of the world.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, Yarborough's coming back to. That's right.
Don La Greca
Hopefully are big deals for us. Meaning that they're going to get a lot of guys. They're going to come back. But when you got guys coming back from injury, that's what I was saying about. Oh, we're good at starter because heels coming back. Okay, what is heel coming back look like? First of all, he was rookie of the year. Is there a sophomore jinx? Is he going to be able to come back from this injury? How long is it going to take him to stretch out and give you innings? So it's still a question mark. Even though he's going to come back, there's just so many question marks around him. You just want that insurance policy. But it's not going to come at the expense of the future. And so far all the deals that have happened have not come at the expense of the future.
