Rosenberg
Time I gotta divorce my wife and have my kids bleed out. No, because the Giant game's on.
Peter
No.
Don Hahn
Otherwise I'm not a real fan. What kind of fan are you?
Rosenberg
Not a good one.
Don Hahn
And Rosenberg, the Peter haters who call stupid. The Peter fans who call very bright.
Rosenberg
This isn't North Dakota, this is New York.
Don Hahn
This is Don Han and Rosenberg.
Peter
The best threesome I've ever heard on
Don Hahn
ESPN New York and streaming live on YouTube.
Rosenberg
Oh, Dolly, I'm hot today. 301 of the big city Don Hahn and Rosenberg. And we're missing a Han. We looked everywhere. He's not here. Allen's got the day off. He'll be back for the big Beach Bash tomorrow starting at noon and on the air at 1. But the doors are going to be open at noon at Bar A, Lake Como, New Jersey for the big Beach Bash. We're looking forward to that, but We've got a four hour full frontal today up to Ty Butler at 7 o'. Clock. But Peter's here. We found Peter.
Peter
And.
Rosenberg
And it sounds like a member of Peter's family is within microphone distance. There it is. Listen. I was replaced by a stuffed animal once on the Michael K Show. This is much better.
Don Hahn
Oh no, this is much cuter. Maya, what do you want to say to Don Hanna? Rosenberg? She's gonna follow the tradition of every child in the history of the show. Get a microphone, say absolutely nothing. Maya, what do you want to say? You want to say hi? Isn't it crazy? She never stops talking. By the way, the dry boogers is not the best look for the tv, Maya.
Rosenberg
Well, actually that is a spot on an impression of Alan Hahn when he gets upset with a caller.
Don Hahn
Yeah, she's doing, she's doing her best. She just gave a wave though, to everyone, by the way, which is as good as I can give you here.
Rosenberg
There you go. Something's coming out.
Don Hahn
Yeah, there you go.
Rosenberg
Steve Cohen talking about the state of the match.
Don Hahn
You know what? Thank you. Maya, listen to me. So the Mets owner Steve Cohen spoke and he said that no matter how things are going, David Stearns, the general manager, will be here next season. No matter what what are your thoughts? Yeah, well, similar. Similar feeling to many Mets fans out there. Yeah, well, wow is right.
Rosenberg
Yeah, there was a lot of wow.
Don Hahn
By the way, Mitchell Robinson, no longer a Knick, he signed a deal with the Celtics. What are your thoughts? Yeah, again, speechless.
Rosenberg
Those on YouTube saw the look of disgust on her face, though.
Peter
Yeah. Yeah.
Don Hahn
And that's not just the dry boogers. That's the feeling. And we have a lot, Don. Can you believe though, on a random July 1st, we have this many, like, potent local stories. And that doesn't even get on a classic with Harry Kane just scoring two goals for England to send them on to play Mexico on Sunday in the World Cup. But just locally, there's so much stuff happening on a day that's normally dead as a doornail.
Rosenberg
Yeah, we've got lots of NBA and NHL free agency to get into. Rangers pick up another player. We'll get into that a little bit later on. We'll get your pulse on. Now it having meaning tonight when Team USA takes on Bosnia. No longer pool play. Oh, no. It's win or die. That's it. I mean, you've got to either win and advance or it's all over. And are people starting to pick up the vibe, especially here in New York? It was brought up yesterday by Griffin. This is the perfect storm for New York, right, to fall in love with this game because the Mets and the Yankees are playing in the afternoon. We're already in reruns with most of the shows that you probably watch and so sit back and watch a very meaningful game as Team USA looks to advance later on tonight. So are people starting to get into it. And as you mentioned, Steve Cohen spoke and we've got quotes from him and David Stearns isn't going anywhere. And I've got lots to say about that. And I know Peter, Peter does as well. But I think the biggest news of the day, not that it was a big surprise, but where he went the bigger surprise. And that's Mitchell Robinson, no longer on the champion New York Knicks. He's now a member of the hated Boston Celtics. Three years, $4.74 million. So he got his bag. We talked about because of his age and his injury situation, this was probably going to be his last big chance to get big money. And he lands in Boston with the Celtics and I'm sure a lot of Nick fans. And based on the reaction on social media, not happy to lose him and certainly not happy to lose him to the Celtics.
Don Hahn
Yeah, I mean, listen this. We, we. If you've been paying attention to this show. We have been pretty bullish on the fact that Mitch was going to be the piece of this Knicks team you didn't have. So when you looked back and celebrated this team, you're pretty sure he's not going to be at, you know, he won't be at Banner Night. Is was pretty clear, I think.
Rosenberg
Well, unless the Celtics happen to be the team they play, by the way, raise the banner. That wouldn't be a bad idea, would it?
Don Hahn
And maybe they do it for a variety of reasons. It works, right?
Peter
But.
Don Hahn
So I don't think there's huge shock in that regard, but there will be sadness and disappointment because of like how pivotal a role he played. Can I just say that as a Celtics fan though, I, I'm not like jumping up and down. It's like, it's cool that they filled a need. This is a team that has been without length, minus Horford, minus Porzingis. They're not very physical, they're not very big. And you gain that in Robinson. But Don, I know him too well to be excited because like, what is the likelihood that he's going to have back to back years where he's completely available at the right time for like a 40 game playoff run?
Rosenberg
Well, you got to do what the Knicks have done and that's manage him. No second of back to backs. You know, there's going to be load management. He played 60 games this year, which was a lot over recent vintage. You have to go back to 21, 22, I believe when he played 72 games, that's the most he's ever played in one season in his career. But you're going to have to manage his minutes. And the Celtics are a team that knows unless something amazing happens and they do not, you know, they don't get back a haul if they do trade Brown or that becomes a situation that brings them down. But you figure the Celtics are a playoff team, right, so they can manage his minutes and then once they get to the playoffs, hope that he's a guy that's going to be able to give you, you know, between 15 and 20 minutes a night and come up with key moments like he did with the Knicks to help you advance. So I'm with you. It could be a disaster where just when you need him, he's on the shelf. But I think if they manage him right, then that should not be an issue come playoff time. That's why I don't think teams that weren't sure if they're making the playoffs would be interested. That's why Detroit was poking around to see could he be a backup there and get a chance to play. So it was either a team that didn't need a starter or a team that knew they can live with managing his minutes in the regular season so that he can play all out or all out from what he could bring in the playoffs. So I'm not saying the Celtics are the Knicks, but in the sense of they know they're a playoff team, they like to think they can make a run and they will sacrifice regular season minutes to make sure that Mitch can give him at least 20 in the postseason. So.
Don Hahn
But it's also, I guess it's. It's one of those things that if you think your team's far away, it depends how far away you believe the Celtics are. If you believe they're far away based on the fact that they're basically considering blowing up their nucleus, then you know, to me, Mitch isn't anything to like jump up and down about. However, if you believe if that they're just another piece, you know, you get the right. They get Drew Holiday back and they feel like, hey, well, now we got sort of the physicality, the clutch, the, the offense defense from Drew at the point to go along with Derek White, who you hope has a bounce back after a bad playoff. And then we added the, the, the size, the physicality with Mitch. And you feel like you're basically right there, that it's a great pickup. If you feel like you're still a ways away. Mitchell Robinson doesn't get you very close to a championship, believe me, Knicks fans will be the first to tell you. But do the Knicks win the championship without Mitchell Robinson? Probably not. And not just because he had the defensive rebound to end the season when he grabbed that board against San Antonio
Rosenberg
in Game 5, you know, and you're going to get to the hack of Mitch stuff now you'll be on the other side of that where you'll be making sure he goes to the foul line. Listen, you've been talking about how you don't think Celtics, Knicks is really a thing because really the only.
Don Hahn
In my lifetime, in my lifetime, I don't think it's been a huge.
Rosenberg
Last year it was a thing, Knicks beat them. And then you hear, oh, the Celtics think they have no chance. They would have gotten boat raced according to reports if they had played the Knicks this year. Now the Knicks have the target on their back. Boston gets a nick to try to spice it up a little bit. I Think this could be a lot of fun. The east is.
Don Hahn
Agree, agree with that.
Rosenberg
By the way, you would like to see a guy like Mitch go out west and not be bothered by him. But now, not only does he stay in the east, he stays in your division. And it might be a team that the Knicks play in the postseason. So it hurts from that standpoint. And this one hurts too, because he's one of the guys, right? He's. You hate losing champions, and especially in quick order. I remember when the mets won in 86, it was like right away, Ray Knight signs with Baltimore and all he was was the World Series mvp. And it hurt to see, you know, to lose somebody as significant as that immediately, you know, they're just scooping up the, the ticker tape from the parade and he's already a Baltimore Oriole. That kind of got the feeling here that Mitch, who was the longest tenured Knick, right, and had maybe didn't, you know, contribute MVP wise, but he contributed to a team winning a championship and now he's out the door and that kind of stinks. Hawk Porter, you can live with that. You're going to lose guys, but Mitch hurts a little bit for sure, especially in Boston. And we'd like to hear from you at 1-800-Now-193776. How do you feel about. You can't blame the Knicks. The Knicks couldn't give him.
Don Hahn
How about this, though? Can I, Can I give you a silver lining?
Rosenberg
Yeah,
Don Hahn
if you're going to lose Mitch, aren't you glad you lost him now and not one year ago at this time?
Rosenberg
Oh, listen, you don't want to title without it.
Don Hahn
You got him. You got him for what you needed and it happened. Can you believe it?
Rosenberg
No, that, that, that's. But this is the price of doing business. I mean, this is what. You know, as much as I advocate for Major League Baseball, going to a cap, and I think a cap is a fair system where everybody's using the same money. This is the casualties you have back in the day if there's no cap. And the NBA's had a cap longer than anybody. But you know what I mean, Peter, you would have, you would have. All right, I'll give him 40 million. I don't want to. I don't think he's worth it, but he's part of our core championship and we don't want to see him go. But you can't do that in modern day sports anymore. You can't give out gold watches. You know, unfortunately for the Knicks, they get to give out a gold ring during the off season, and he'll get the first time the Celtics are here at Madison Square Garden. But this is just the price of doing business. And I can't fault him either. As much as you love to see him take a discount, this is the team that he played his whole career with. I'm sorry, that's a lot of money to turn down. So I can't. I can't blame the player, especially where he is in his career, where this was like, literally the last bag he's going to be able to grab.
Don Hahn
Yeah, you can't. You can't be mad. And again, how much, really, Knicks fans, how much also are you willing to sacrifice to keep Mitch? That's another question you have to ask. You know, this is. This is a balancing act. The money here is a balancing act. It would be a. You know what, Don would be an interesting game to play, too. Of the pieces that you found out are coming back, would you have rather had Mitch than Alvarado? Maybe. Maybe. Some would say yes. Well, would you rather have Mitch than Shamet? I don't know. By the way, he's more money than them, so it's not really. It's not apples to apples anyway. But my point is, you got some pieces that you thought could be gone. And I thought Alvarado brought so much edge that this team needed and spunk and character that they did not have. Plus a guy to have running things and on the floor when Brunson's getting a. A breather. So I think he's pivotal. Shame. It obviously hit huge shots for this team. So let's say you don't want to lose any of them, But Mitch is a big one.
Rosenberg
That's the answer. Anybody that says that are mad at Mitch or. Or mad at the Knicks, you didn't want to see anybody go. You want them to just come back completely intact. But that's not going to happen. Listen, they want to win championships, but when you win championships, you contribute to championships and you become a free agent. This is the money that you have to spend. And for the people that say, well, then go to the second apron, who cares? We're New York. We could be able to handle it. Don't sit on a bunch of money. You'll be the first to complain. And all of a sudden, there's a need that you can't fill because you decided to bring everybody back. Right? So you can't have your cake and eat it, too. As you said, somebody was going to have to leave. It's better now than last year where it hurt you. Everything feels a little different after a championship, but this is just the way it goes. And I don't think you just get mad at just, hey, isn't it better to go through these things coming off a championship than just missing a championship and seeing the rival Celtics, a team in your division, get better, then you're still chasing after the ring. Everybody's now chasing down you. And because you won a championship, you've got the right management. You've got to feel confident that Leon Rose and company are going to find a suitable replacement and do something that will work out. And not that you'll forget Mitch, but you won't mind it as much as, because the powers that be at Madison Square Garden will do the right thing.
Don Hahn
You know what, you know what big boy teams do? Big boy teams win and let go of guys that you really love because they know when it's time and they know how to play with the money and they know we got as much juice for the squeeze with Mitch Robinson in this last year than we're ever going to get. It's time. That's it.
Rosenberg
That stinks. It stinks.
Don Hahn
But, yeah, but I'm curious to hear from Knicks fans. 1-800-9193776 I am curious to know the level of stink, like, if you're a true, true Knicks fan.
Peter
Are you.
Don Hahn
Were you like, oh, man, like, is it a true gut punch or are you, like, so happy in general that you're just like, all right, man. You know, I am curious to know the tenor from true Knicks fans.
Rosenberg
I think true Knick fans saw the writing on the wall the second the season ended that he was likely a guy that they were going to lose. I think they're mad where he went. I think any emotion right now is about the fact that he's a Celtic, not that he's gone.
Don Hahn
Right?
Rosenberg
I mean, Alan was telling you that he told you a couple of he told you on Monday he's likely gone. Get used to it. He's going to go and I don't know, Peter, you're closer to it than me. As far as being a Celtic fan, we. Was this on your radar? Was this a destination? I didn't see it.
Peter
No.
Don Hahn
I'll be honest. Like, I haven't been super dialed into Celtics free agency except the Jalen Brown of it all. But I had not heard. Come on. We would have discussed this at some point this week if we thought this was, like, right There.
Peter
But.
Don Hahn
But real quick, you know, reminder. There may be no one better at this stuff than the Celtics. So they are. They are really good at, like, chilling in the background. And all of a sudden you look up and you go, I mean, do you remember Don when they moved Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis? And I was like, everyone's like, oh, you should be so happy you got Kristaps Porzingis. And I was like, oh, okay, I'm not that excited. And then, not only does Porzingis turn out to be the best version of Porzingis, but don't forget Don. They then replaced Marcus Smart with Drew Holiday. So, like, they've always. This is what Brad Stevens does. He's very good at this. So I'm not surprised we didn't see it coming.
Rosenberg
And that's what good teams do. And it' especially in the NBA. You know, you brought up Marcus Smart as an example. What number team is he now playing on since he left the Celtics?
Don Hahn
I don't. We don't need to.
Rosenberg
No, I'm just saying that the four.
Peter
He.
Don Hahn
It's three. He went. He went. Memphis, Washington, at last check, Los Angeles. Now, what I do want to see happen, though, is what my guarantee was when he moved around a second time, I was like, all right, you know, he's coming home. Like, at some point, he's coming home. We'll see if that actually happens, depending on what they do at la. Oh, he's going to Houston. Oh, he's a Charger now. Oh, he's a Ram. When's he going to Houston? Literally, right now, Jake.
Rosenberg
It was today.
Don Hahn
Wait, so it's Memphis, Washington, Lakers, la, Houston.
Peter
Yep.
Don Hahn
But this is Don and by the way, separate conversation. It is one of those things about sports. If you're. You can be a certain level player where you're still really good, and you're on one of those teams where you're like a core culture kind of guy. And isn't it crazy, Don, like, your life is every day one thing. You're just a Celtic. That's what you do. One trade happens, and before you blink, you're a frigging journeyman. And you're all over the league. It's. And we. We talk about athletes and their money and how great their life is and all those things, but you don't ever really spend time talking about the guys who do everything right, but they end up in a collateral, in some sort of deal and a money thing. And then all of a sudden, Don, your whole life is Just flips upside down for years. Years.
Rosenberg
And. And what kick would a Mitchell Robinson have or Marcus Smart have when. How many teams does LeBron James play for? How many teams has KD played for?
Peter
Right?
Rosenberg
How many. How many teams has Harden been on? Like, you're talking.
Don Hahn
Well, I mean, in LeBron's case, everyone's. It's different when every single one's a choice. When every time you leave, it's you going, you know what? I want to move to Miami.
Rosenberg
You know what? I got to tell you.
Don Hahn
Go. Going back to Cleveland would be great. You know what? I'm starting a production company. I'd love to spend some time in Los Angeles. I like Kobe.
Peter
You know what?
Don Hahn
But you're right. I mean, it's part of what the game is, and they do get paid handsomely for it. I'm just pointing out I find it fascinating. And, Don, I don't know what your list is today. One day, it would make an interesting list. Now, it's complicated. This is very inside baseball. Sports, nerdy, but Christ, that's what we do. A list of people who were integral to a team, and then once the first trade happened, they just bounced around till it was over. And you go from being like this guy who everyone that you know their number, you know who they are, and then all of a sudden, they are. You can't keep track of where they go anymore.
Rosenberg
Yeah, especially in the. In the cap world, where you just become a cap casualty and then your contract becomes an albatross. It goes from, we love it. We can fit it. Now you don't fit anymore. Not as a player, but from a financial standpoint, and you get rocked around a bit. 1-800-919-3776 let's hear from you, Ant. New gets us started here on Don Allen Rosenberg.
Peter
What's up, Dom? Peter, I'm kind of bummed that Allen's not here, because I wanted to get his opinion on this move. Boston Celtics fan here, by the way. Peter, I think you're wrong on this, man. I think Boston Celtics fan should be jumping and screaming because Mitchell Robinson is what we've needed for years. Me, personally, I've been clamoring for this guy going back four or five years ago because he's low maintenance, high production. He's a guy, you don't got to give him the ball or you don't got to run plays for him. And we have a dynamic doing that, by the way. Listen, this Jalen Brown thing, it's a smoke screen. Celtics are not gone. This is smoking. They just putting all this stuff out here playing along because they let. They were irresponsible a little bit. They're not perfect. They let it get out that they were trying to get Giannis so now they got to scramble. Jalen Brown's not going anywhere but intact with those three guys. And you got Derek White, Peyton Pritchard. That's promising. But to keep it nicked because I'm on New York Sports race to keep a mix of it all. Where do you think this pulls this? The power structure in the Eastern Conference. I know Knicks are going to jump out as the favorite to begin because defending champions of course, but I think Dawson might have something to say about that man. And then you got Miami, you got Detroit making move. It's going to be interesting.
Don Hahn
Let me ask you this. But let me ask you this.
Peter
You still there?
Don Hahn
Let me ask you one thing. So. So you think if the Jalen Brown thing is a smokescreen and nothing else happens, you think simply what Mitch brings is enough to go from. You don't think they can win a title so they compete with the Knicks for a title?
Peter
Well, me, I'm a very bullish boss. I think we always have a chance to win a title as long as we have those two guys. That's fair. Yes, yes. Because you know what else Mitch brings? You know those 20, those 20 point comebacks that the Knicks were always doing? Oh yeah, he brings some of that that the Celtics struggle with because we go up 20 points in the fourth quarter and we just forget how to play basketball. So I know it's only one guy, but it could help.
Rosenberg
Now listen ant but you are looking at it and thank you for the phone call that everything works out, that he's healthy, he'll be available for every playoff game. That is not a guarantee. It's not a guarantee at all. So you can't go from reports that the Celtics felt they would have gotten boat raced by the Knicks in the playoffs to all of a sudden Mitchell Robinson goes from a Knick to a Celtic to now. It changes everything. First of all, Peter's right. It doesn't change everything. It makes the Celtics better and it's a hit for the Knicks. But is he going to be available for every playoff game? He was available for 18 of the 19 this year in all of last year because you had to really reduce his minutes in the regular season. There's going to be a time during the length of this contract that maybe his availability is going to be questionable.
Don Hahn
Also I love having him. And by the way, that guy knows ball and he makes some good points. But does Mitch Robinson be there? And I'm asking this in earnest because maybe a real, real smart basketball mind can explain to me how this makes sense. But does Mitch Robinson be there, being there all of a sudden make three balls go down when you're shooting 45 in a game and making 12?
Rosenberg
Well, there you go.
Don Hahn
That's the part I'm not sure about as a Celtics fan.
Rosenberg
Absolutely. But it is a hit for the Knicks and it helps the Celtics. But how much we're going to find out certainly next season because I think both teams are going to to the playoffs. Rosenberg
You know, it's really scary to watch the Yankees in a state that they're in right now. And again there's reasons for it with the injuries to Judge. But Judge spoke and talked about how the team needs to play better and be a little bit more focused and engaged. But they're being too hit right now in the top of the eighth inning. They're getting shut out at home against the Detroit Tiger teams. That's well under.500. It's just, it's crazy. So we're keeping an eye on that Mets underway. You can hear that game on 880. We've confirmed that Sami Zayn, WWE Champion will join us at 4. We've got a list at 4:30. Jam packed show. Allen's off today. He's going to be back for the Beach Bash coming up tomorrow. Looking forward to that.
Don Hahn
He doesn't, he doesn't believe in being on air conditioned shows. He only wants to work if he can melt. That's what that's he wants to be in the heat of the action. Literally.
Rosenberg
But it is wow, it is a hot one today. It's one of those the feel likes it's like 96. Feels like 110 in some places in the tri state area. So stay hydrated. Be inside if you can. You know, get into a pool if you can. But it is ridiculously hot outside. And a lot of Nick fans ridiculously hot at the fact that Mitchell Robinson is no longer a Nick goes to the Celtics. Three years, $47.4 million. And let's hear what Kurt on the Jersey Shore has to think about this. What's up, Kurt?
Peter
What's going on, boys? How are you? Happy fourth of July weekend. Yeah, I just want to. I just want to say one thing about Mitch, right? Like this should all be all love for Mitch today, you know, not that he went to the Celtics, not that he took the money. This guy has been everything we needed. We won the championship with him. But let's talk about this from the Nick perspective. And really, Leon Rose, right? The Knicks could not have gone over the second apron for him. You know, it's not OG it's not Brunson, it's not Cat. It's a limited guy who does good things what he. Right. He does specific things. Good. But. But 14 minutes, you know, a game in the postseason, missing games, you know, maintenance and stuff like that. You know, it's not about the money for Dalton. It's about hamstringing them with. You can't aggregate for trades. You can't. You know, you're going to lose draft picks. You can't sign in trades. Like, we can't do that for Mitchell Robinson. If that was for OG Anunoby, then you go to the second apron. But you know what, Mitch, Great job. We love you. Standing ovation. People are saying today, opening night, the banner night, could be the Celtics now with the Knicks. You give him a standing ovation. Oh, yeah. Thank you. You want to get your money and let's go.
Rosenberg
Yeah, absolutely.
Don Hahn
And very reasonable take.
Rosenberg
That's a very reasonable take to me. I think, Peter, it's the only take, you know, show your love and then he'll be the enemy moving forward. I would not be surprised at all. Even before this, that opening night would be Nick Celtics national team, usually the defending champion, gets that NBC game. Now, like that. Now, I think for sure you're going to see that. And you give him his props and you give him his moment, and then once the game gets started, it's on. You know, that's just the way it works. But I think Kurt speaks for the bright Nick fan who sees the forest through the trees. He is a flawed player because of his physical situation. And if this were OG, if this were Brunson, different story.
Don Hahn
But Andy's a free throw liability. While we're at. While we're naming the flaws, I'm just saying. While we're naming the flaws, I don't
Rosenberg
want want this to be about picking apart. It just made sense. All right, you can't keep everybody. And I'm not going to sit there. I don't even completely understand the second apron. But what I do know, that there's a lot that goes with going over that. And you've heard Jim Dolan, the owner, whose money it is, says they didn't want to do that, and the Knicks clearly didn't want to do that. And if you don't want to do it, Mitchell Robinson is not the player to break your word on it. And I. And you got to have faith that at the end of the day, they're going to figure out a way to replace him. Devin's in Westchester. You're on. Don Hannah, Rosenberg.
Peter
Devin, what's going on?
Rosenberg
It's all happening. Yeah, what do you got?
Peter
Hey, what's going on, gentlemen? I mean, the signing, it hurts more that he's going to the Celtics. I'm very happy for Mitch. I think he deserves to get paid. But I think it catapults the Celtics to at least the number two team in the. In the east, especially with those two top 10, top 15 players and Tatum and Brown. The big question mark is, can Mitch play 30 minutes every night? And if he can't, then I don't really see them getting past the Knicks with just this signing, especially if they come off of Jaden, Jalen Brown.
Rosenberg
I don't. I don't see it either.
Don Hahn
But you know what?
Rosenberg
I also don't see Devin. And thank you for the phone call. I don't understand the whole. They would have gotten boat race by the Knicks. Do I think the Knicks would have beaten the Celtics? Yes, I do. But boat race suggests that they would have just been the same victims at the end of the Atlanta series that the Hawks were. That what the Sixers were and what the Cavs were. I don't think that. I think it would have been a hard series. I think Knicks would have probably won in six, maybe seven. I think they would have won the series. But the boat race thing, I'm not getting. And that was apparently coming from the Celtics. Now, was that just exaggerating to try to show, hey, we really need to make moves here? I don't know what that report was about. But as much as I don't think Mitchell Robinson all of a sudden makes the Celtics better than the Knicks, I never really thought the whole boat race thing made sense anyway.
Don Hahn
It felt like revisionist history. I felt like. Well, because they ended up blowing. And be clear, they blew it against Philly. They blew it. I mean, that. That was a series that looked like they would win easily. Don. We were talking about whether they would be hanging out waiting for the Knicks. When the Knicks were up to. When the knicks were down 2:1 to Atlanta, there was a conversation about will the Celtics get done very quickly and, like, be waiting? And then the Celtics ended up blowing it. So I think it feels like revisionist history. And I'll say, oh, no, we always knew they just didn't have it. I don't really, really believe that.
Rosenberg
No, I don't get it. But listen, they know the team better than we do. But.
Don Hahn
But sometimes these narratives go out with a purpose and they start making their way around me.
Rosenberg
Or, you know, maybe we're reading into it the wrong way. Maybe it was just where their head was out at the time, that they just weren't in a good place to beat the Knicks, just where they. Because look what happened, right? They completely fell apart against the Sixers. So maybe the. Maybe the feeling was where they were as a team.
Peter
You.
Rosenberg
If they did get out of that series with the Sixers, they would have had nothing against the Knicks. Maybe it was just that moment in time, but with an offseason, a tweak here, tweak there, get the. Get the whole Tatum Brown thing worked out, that maybe it'd be a different story. So maybe we're not. Maybe. Maybe we're looking at it too broadly. Maybe it was just that specific Celtic team at that particular time of the season. Maybe it's that.
Peter
It could be.
Don Hahn
It could be. But either way, I'm with you. We're in lockstep about that. I think this is a narrative that came later, but let's be.
Rosenberg
Steve's out in California. You're on espn. New York. What's up, Steve?
Peter
Hey, what's up, guys? Hello.
Don Hahn
Yeah, hi.
Peter
Yes, hi. This. I have two points. Just wanted to piggyback off of what Peter said, that what makes a good general manager is to be able to move off of players, you know, like Mitch Robinson. But I see another example in New York City, the New York Mets. The general manager moved on from players last year, and he replaced them with chocolate soft serve. And so, you know, you got to be able to replace Mitch Robinson's productivity, you know, the rebounds, the offensive rebounds and stuff. And also, I just wanted to have another point for another question for Don.
Rosenberg
Yes.
Peter
Yeah. So my wife is pregnant, and she's due any day now. And so, you know, I just have a question, like, should I put soccer in the delivery room so that I can, you know, tell her, hey, you know what? Like, there's a little bit of extra time. Why don't you close your legs until, you know, the game's over? Or should I put on a Met game? Should I put on a meth game to let her know, you know, so that till the ending's over?
Rosenberg
Steve, Steve, do you know the sex of the child?
Peter
Yes. It's a boy.
Rosenberg
Okay. Do you really want to have your son enter the world with a Met game? Or if you're a soccer fan, and I don't believe this, but I've been told this. The beautiful game of soccer or football, as they say, with a you. How do you want your son to first see the world? In filthy or beauty?
Don Hahn
Thank you.
Peter
I just want my wife to be happy, so.
Rosenberg
Right.
Peter
Well, you know, why would a mess
Don Hahn
thing have anything to do with someone being happy? Someone to be happy.
Peter
Okay, let's change it up. How about a Knicks game with two minutes left, with all the timeouts left and all these ticky tack files that happen? Which one finishes first, the soccer game or the basketball game?
Rosenberg
Oh, wow, that's a good question. Um, I still think the. The basketball game ends quicker, but, Steve, good luck with the child. This is amazing where you are right now. I think you got to get in a better headspace that this is the things that you're concerned about. But I think.
Don Hahn
Yeah, let's focus.
Rosenberg
Nervous. But again, your child only gets to enter the world once.
Don Hahn
That's right.
Rosenberg
Do you really want it to be in front of a Met game? And this is coming from a Met fan.
Peter
If you want.
Don Hahn
By the way, if you want tonight, when Bear. If Bear goes number two, I can video it for you and you can run it on loop when your child's being born, or you could just watch the Met game. Whatever you want. But why on earth would you want to do feces when you're. When your child's being born and if
Rosenberg
his son is going to be a great human being? Well, see, I don't want to enter this world until this game is over and you're just prolonging the inevitable.
Don Hahn

We're keeping an eye on the Mets and the Yankees. Blue Jays up 1 nothing on the Mets at last check. That game is still very early on up in Toronto. Toronto up one nothing and they are batting bases loaded, one out in the bottom of the first inning. And the Yankees are in the top of the ninth inning down to nothing as the guardian. As the Tigers back. It's crazy. Again, we talked about this earlier when the last time that Detroit played like, they look like the. They look like the Orioles. I don't know if you have the game on, Peter, but they. They look like the Baltimore Orioles. This is the Detroit Tigers, man. They've been around for 100 years. They have a distinctive uniform, and now they've got these stupid black jerseys. And I'm sure it's red, but it looks on television orange, doesn't it? And the way that they spelled Detroit in script looks like Baltimore in script. I mean, at first blush, it feels like they're playing the O's. Come on, man.
Don Hahn
Come on.
Rosenberg
Let's get with it. Let's go to Jose. He's in Connecticut on espn. New York. What's up, Jose?
Peter
Hey, what's up, guys? About this Nick stuff, man. Like, I'm conflicted because let preface by saying it's early. Free agency just started, so we can all just like, probably be okay in a couple. In a week or so. But as of right now, I can understand some people getting upset because I look at it this way, Mitch, we're better with Mission without and the Celtics are not better. Say what you want, they're better with him than they are. So I'm just. I'm a little concerned that if we knew Mitch was leaving, we did not do any. We did not utilize those draft picks that we had. We kept trading away and not taking any. Any bigs. So currently right now, again, I trust Leon. He might. He might just come through. But right now we have no centers outside of Cat. And the way the roster is right now, we're not repeating. But again, subject is a change. But I want to just use Don saying, show me something. That's it.
Rosenberg
Well, a bunch of things, Jose, and thank you for the phone call. First of all, you've got an organization right now that is going to be able to show you something. They just came off a championship. Rose has built this team. And unlike some organizations in New York, not only does he have a plan, he has a plan. That works. So maybe you don't know what it is. I'm sure he does. They made moves with the picks to free up salary. So maybe there's a free agent out there that they're going to get that it's going to look a lot better. Maybe he won't be Mitch, but guess what? He might play more minutes than Mitch. He might not have to load. Management like Mitch will go out there and play his, you know, 70, 80 games and be available to play more than 19 minutes a playoff game. So let's look. Let's see what it looks like. I did it with the Mets and got burned. I said, let's see what it looks like with the Mets. I trusted Stearns and I got burned. But I think Rose has enough of a track record here in New York with the Knicks that you should be allowed to trust him. This isn't a David Stern situation. The call that we had in the last segment talked about sometimes you got to pivot and I had no problem with the pivot. But what the Mets pivoted to was an embarrassment. They're going to have a pivot. They're going to have a game, a plan B for Mitch. And I think Leon Rose deserves the trust that he is going to pivot to something that's going to help this team go out there and at least give themselves the best chance to repeat as possible. This will not be the reason, Peter, they don't repeat his champions next year.
Don Hahn
No, I agree. I agree. I was just looking around to see what else has happened. Porzingis extended with Golden State, so you have to imagine he's staying there. That would have been a fun story that some people flirted with the idea of when you think about bigs that you could potentially go out and get. But that seems like that's. That's going to be him staying out there. But things are going to open up and you'll see. I mean, listen, big men are not common. There's a reason why a guy who cannot hit a shot outside of 10ft, including a free throw done, is still able to get $20 million a year. Because you don't find guys at 7ft rim protectors who can do it even. That's why a guy who even plays 50 games a year for you seems valuable in Mitchell Robinson. But that being said, things change. Teams give up halfway through a year. People move on. There are ways to find pieces and replace bodies. We'll see.
Rosenberg
Rosario solo home run. One out, bottom of the ninth inning. Yankees cut the deficit. In half to 2 to 1. So we're keeping an eye on that. Also, there was a lot of momentum towards Golden State for LeBron James when we left the air yesterday. Now it seems like there's a little bit more momentum going back to Cleveland, so we'll see. That's. That, that, that's huge. And obviously it's a lot for Nick fans to take a look at, too, because even though LeBron James is clearly near the end, he's still a fabulous player, then he's a winner and that's going to improve Cleveland. So I think if you're a Nick fan, as much as I don't like the whole super team thing, if you're a Nick fan, you want him to go to Golden State and worry about him possibly in the Finals, rather than him go to Cleveland and be maybe another obstacle. That would be something, right? If we're having a conversation about the Celtics improving with Mitch and CLEVELAND Improving with LeBron James. This is why it's so difficult to repeat. This is why the NBA has had eight straight different champions. Because it's hard. Not because of the failures of the team that win, but everybody's got the ability to retool and get and get better. And that's clearly what can end up happening here with, with the teams in the Eastern Conference all trying to see if they can do what the Knicks did last year. But at least you know you're a playoff team and you got Bronson and you got cat like you've got. Come on. They did not lose. They lost a piece, Not a pivotal piece. I know they were a team and everybody contributed in their own way, Peter. But
Don Hahn
you're not repeating. You're not not repeating because you lost Mitchell Robinson and you weren't able to find anybody to do anything close to what he did. That that's not going to be the reason the Knicks don't repeat as world champions. I agree.
Rosenberg
1-800-919-3776 where do you think LeBron James is going to go?
Don Hahn
I really. I really tend to think it's Cleveland. I know there has been. I was having a conversation with my boy King Louie today, who does social on the ELR show in the morning, and we were talking about the supposed mending offenses between LeBron and Pat Riley and. Thank you, Maya. And is there a world in which Miami could be interesting? Putting LeBron with Giannis, which. Which, by the way, Don, I wouldn't completely throw that out the window, is something appealing. Obviously, there's a history there Obviously that team is another team like the Celtics that's good at figuring out how to retool quickly and make something work. But for me, when you think about how long this will last, which my guess is a year or two and then it's got to be the end. Doesn't it have to be Cleveland? I just cannot picture LeBron essentially closing out his career playing second fiddle to Steph Curry. I can't picture it.
Rosenberg
And go, I know he's gone back to Cleveland and got them a championship. So there's this sense of been there, done that with him. But they need him and they're not
Don Hahn
that far off, Don.
Rosenberg
And you don't know what happens in the season. They just played the conference final, right? I mean, and he, and he must look at that and go, that, that's not nothing. At least maybe my last year could be playing meaningful games deep into the playoffs. Maybe I don't win a championship. Maybe I get him back to the conference final. I play in a couple of game sevens. But Anthony Pusick, while he's watching this Yankee game, they've got the tying run at third. Jazz is at third with one out. Volpes up has got something else to tell us.
Don Hahn
Admittedly, I'm on the NHL free agent

Episode: Hour 1: Knicks Lose Mitch
Date: July 1, 2026
This episode’s central theme revolves around the major news in New York sports: Knicks center Mitchell Robinson has signed with the rival Boston Celtics, ending his tenure with the championship Knicks. Don, Hahn & Rosenberg break down the implications for both franchises, the emotional reactions from fans, and the broader context of NBA free agency. The show contains a mix of passionate sports analysis, realistic business insights, and listener participation, all while maintaining the trio’s signature wit and camaraderie.
Quote (Don Hahn, 05:07):
"If you've been paying attention to this show, we have been pretty bullish on the fact that Mitch was going to be the piece of this Knicks team you didn’t have… he won't be at Banner Night.”
Quote (Peter, 05:40):
"I know him too well to be excited because, like, what is the likelihood that he's going to have back-to-back years where he's completely available at the right time for like a 40 game playoff run?"
Quote (Rosenberg, 14:26):
"Big boy teams win and let go of guys that you really love because they know when it's time..."
Quote (Rosenberg, 15:12):
"I think they're mad where he went. I think any emotion right now is about the fact that he's a Celtic, not that he's gone."
Quote (Don Hahn, 40:50):
"You're not not repeating because you lost Mitchell Robinson and you weren't able to find anybody to do anything close to what he did. That's not going to be the reason the Knicks don't repeat as world champions."
On fan sentiment for Robinson:
“You hate losing champions, and especially in quick order…It kind of got the feeling here that Mitch, who was the longest tenured Knick…contributed to a team winning a championship and now he's out the door and that kind of stinks.”
— Rosenberg (09:39)
On managing expectations and cap casualties:
“You can’t have your cake and eat it, too. As you said, somebody was going to have to leave. It’s better now than last year where it hurt you. Everything feels a little different after a championship, but this is just the way it goes.”
— Rosenberg (13:06)
On sustainable success:
“Big boy teams win and let go of guys that you really love because they know when it's time and they know how to play with the money.”
— Don Hahn (14:26)
On whether Knicks fans should be upset:
“This should all be all love for Mitch today, you know, not that he went to the Celtics, not that he took the money. This guy has been everything we needed. We won a championship with him.”
— Kurt (Listener, 25:29)
The episode maintains an authentic, conversational New York sports talk tone—honest, sometimes brash, with a blend of optimism, realism, and humor. There’s affection and respect for Mitchell Robinson’s contributions, but a practical understanding of NBA business realities. The hosts balance passion and pragmatism, involving listeners’ voices and emotions throughout.
“Knicks Lose Mitch” is an episode that perfectly captures the high and low emotional swings of modern New York sports fandom. The crew’s mixture of basketball knowledge, empathy for both the player and fans, and clarity about salary cap realities offers context that helps listeners process the changing team landscape. For die-hards and casuals alike, it's a must-listen for understanding not just the aftermath of this pivotal signing, but the evolving nature of team-building in the cap era.
