Two virgins working in one room together. A lot can be accomplished.
Don Hahn
Han, I just got excited.
Alan Rosenberg
And Rosenberg, Alan just expressed theoretical arousal about the Dolly Parton puppet.
Peter
This isn't North Dakota. This is New York.
Don Hahn
This is Don Hahn and Rosenberg.
Caller
The best threesome I've ever heard on.
Don Hahn
880 ESPN and the ESPN New York app.
Peter
That's right. This is New York, baby. This isn't North Dakota. This is New York.
Don Hahn
This ain't even Boston.
Peter
Go, New York. Go, New York, go. That's right. They take game one, survive and advance. Got to feel pretty good about the Knicks today. All right, I know the series is long from over. I understand the.
Don Hahn
But at least it's not short to over, which is, again, you lose game one. And then the way that was looking, there was this sense of this could be quick. Like, there were again, a lot of Celtics fans that were, hey, this will be quick. This will be over quick. And so this now gives you a sense that, okay, this, this is. We're dug in.
Alan Rosenberg
I'm sorry that you don't have one of those yo yos on this show. I know you're disappointed. It would have been more fun today if I was some yo yo moron from Natick who showed up here today going yesterday screaming about how dominant the Celtics were going to be. But the truth is, the Celtics, like in the words of Don Lagreca, say it. They could be had. No, no, no.
Don Hahn
They bat the bunny.
Alan Rosenberg
I'm not saying that. No, no, no, they didn't bat the bunny.
Peter
They could be had.
Don Hahn
Now, what gives you the sense that they could be had?
Alan Rosenberg
Number one. You have some version of an injury to three of their best players, right? And we. And by the way, oh, then a fourth one just left the game.
Don Hahn
Porzingis got sick. So sick he had to leave a playoff game.
Alan Rosenberg
So he and never came back. So in addition to the fact that at some point during these playoffs, Tatum's been hurt, Brown is beat up, Holiday just started playing, right? That's. That's basically their core three, plus poor Zingis who leaves the game sick. You never know. They could. This is a year where maybe they could be had.
Don Hahn
Let's.
Peter
Let's talk turkey.
Alan Rosenberg
I love turkey.
Peter
Everything you said is true, but you have to take advantage of it. And the Knicks are built to take advantage of it. Because despite what everybody says about them not being a physical team, they're mentally tough. They've got grit. You're down 20. It's so easy on the road, nobody expects you to win anyway. Put your tail between your legs. Go live to fight another day. We'll get you on Wednesday. We're just looking for the split in Boston anyway. It's not our night. But the Knicks didn't go away. And then clang 3, clang 3, clang 3. And then the Knicks, because they hung around mentally tough, didn't give up, were there to pounce. Make no mistake, guys, the knicks are up one nothing in this series because the Celtics couldn't hit a three to save their life. 15 for 60. They just kept taking them because that's what they do. So what do we say before the series starts? They're going to need help to beat the Celtics from the Celtics. Celtics helped them, but the Knicks put themselves in a position. Allen. To take advantage of it because there's a lot of teams down 20 in the third that would have just wrapped it up mentally and then not taking advantage of that opportunity. That's the positive. Celtics helped, but the Knicks were there to take advantage.
Don Hahn
That had to happen, right? Once you got to a point where the game was there to be had, you had to win that game. When Brunson missed that little runner at the end of regulation and you saw him just look up and then he kind of grins like. Because they knew, too, they could feel it. We have to win this game. And they did. You saw it. So that's what shows you the difference from what Boston has had to face last year in their Eastern Conference run and then even in the first round this year. Inexperience, injury riddled teams. They had a easy path. You can't bat the bunny against this next year. So one thing I said, don't do that against them. Don't leave the door open, because this team is not going to melt down. This team has been through all kinds of adversity. They've been told how many times during this season you know that, what, they're not good enough. You're not last year's team. You're not tough enough. All the stuff that's been said about them, don't you dare leave the Door open for him. That's what happened last night, is they saw the door open, and there's not a single guy on that court that wasn't like, oh, okay, you saw OG Anunoby turn it up. Hart turned it up. By the way, Brunson in crunch time turned up. And then Mikhail Bridges, who everybody just wants to kill.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, for good reason at times, not.
Don Hahn
Yesterday was just fantastic.
Alan Rosenberg
Valuable.
Don Hahn
So this first game, remember what I said? I just said, I want to see how game one goes. And for the first two and a half quarters of game one, it felt like all the other games we saw this regular season, they just weren't on the same level. But then the Celtics got greedy. They missed 10 straight threes.
Peter
I know. 10.
Don Hahn
Like, they couldn't help themselves.
Alan Rosenberg
But for the record, that's who they are.
Don Hahn
Stop shooting them.
Alan Rosenberg
But that's who they are, Alan. And it's not a really great way to play basketball. No, it's not.
Don Hahn
The problem with them is they're like a fiend. It's like they start missing them and it's like, no, no, just one more.
Alan Rosenberg
Just. This is the one more bet.
Don Hahn
This one's going in. This one. I'm gonna nail it. I'm gonna get it. And they just couldn't hit him.
Peter
Jack City.
Alan Rosenberg
No, they're pooping. It's calling. The threes are calling.
Don Hahn
It's calling me. It'd be calling, but.
Alan Rosenberg
But in.
Don Hahn
I try to take a layup and it'd be calling.
Alan Rosenberg
That's the thing.
Peter
I gotta kick it out for another one.
Don Hahn
Drew Holly had a layup and he threw it out to three.
Peter
Like, what are you doing?
Alan Rosenberg
No, they don't play. I'm just pointing.
Don Hahn
How beautiful was this for a Nick fan of watch?
Alan Rosenberg
They don't play a great brand of basketball every night. And if you have a night where, let's be honest, if guys, if. If Tatum is 5% less garbage, they win the game.
Peter
He was pure hot track last night.
Alan Rosenberg
That's the scary thing, that's the hard.
Peter
Part, is that, you know, Brown.
Don Hahn
Wasn't that an NBA game?
Peter
Brown 1 for 10. Tatum, 5, 4 for 15 from 3. White 5 for 16.
Don Hahn
Think about it. 16 of his 18 shots were threes. Tatum, 65% of his shots were threes. Brown, half of 10 of his 20 shots were threes. They couldn't help themselves.
Peter
Now, if you want to tap yourself on the back, if you're a Knick fan and say, well, that's the way you defend. No.
Don Hahn
Oh, hell, no.
Peter
No, no, no. Did you see the stat? 45 of the 63s were not contested.
Don Hahn
Yes.
Peter
And they missed 32 of them. They were 32. That's ridiculous. So that math was 17 of 45 from uncontested threes.
Don Hahn
Yeah. Like you, you, you are looking at that and you're saying there's always the one game they're going to give you in a series. They gave one to Orlando. This is what they do. Even like, remember two years ago, they were, they, this was. See, they won a championship last year and they did it in the Eastern Conference finals because the Pacers gave them games early in that series. And then it was a joke. They had a. Pacers were awful late in games, so. But the Celtics have had a reputation before this group of giving you games. And when you, when they are giving them. So you got to take them.
Peter
Yeah, they did.
Don Hahn
And the Knicks took one. Now here's the question.
Alan Rosenberg
Here we go.
Don Hahn
Can the Knicks. Now you were given one.
Alan Rosenberg
Can you win one?
Don Hahn
Can you go win one? Now? Can you take one?
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
And all you got to think about is this. How many people have said, can they get it to six? Right? Well, now you got it. You know, you're going to five.
Peter
Now you're going five.
Don Hahn
You got two games at home coming up. Now, game two is game two. You know, obviously you try to win that and all that stuff, but you got two games at home this coming weekend. You get one.
Peter
You know, there's a game six, game six in your building.
Don Hahn
And then once you get to that point in the series, the longer it goes, I think the more pressure goes on the substance.
Peter
That's the scary thing, if you, if you want to be negative, is that it took atrocious three point shooting. 15 is 60. Yeah, right. And you had to, you had, you win the game in overtime. All right? So that's not going to happen every single night. And the Celtics are not going to shoot that poorly. No, but you got one. And what do we say going in? At least what I say going in is like, you're here, you're in the second round. Well, now you're up one. Now you're guaranteed at least to be in a best of five series with home court. Now the scary thing is the Celtics are unbelievable on the road. The Knicks have not been that great at home, especially in the playoffs. You know, the Knicks are what, four zero on the road?
Don Hahn
Four? No, first time they won four in a row. Crazy on the road. The only six have a franchise history. But the first time they've won four straight on the road in the playoffs since.
Peter
94.
Don Hahn
No, 99 though.
Peter
Okay, so still the Finals.
Don Hahn
And that was. Yeah, that was another finals team. So it's a veteran, tough, you know, minded team.
Peter
We can analyze it. I think everybody logically looks at it and says that, you know, the Celtics did not play well, but the Knicks could certainly play better. I mean, they were down 20. So you didn't see the best from the Celtics. You certainly didn't see the best from the Knicks. You won. There's no apologizing. Right. There's no judges holding up cards with numbers on them. On the style of things in the playoffs. You're up one nothing in the best of seven series. You stole home court advantage. You've got a chance on Wednesday. You're telling me there's not pressure now? Even more pressure on the Celtics. As good as they are on the road, they don't want to go to the Garden this weekend. Down two games to none.
Don Hahn
Remember they did this two years ago with Miami. Lost their first two games, then went down to Miami and everybody's like, well, you know, they're getting a road. Then what happened? Then they lost. Like they, like, like that's how that series went. They lost. They went down three. Oh, that game three was embarrassing in Miami. They were not even ready to play. So they're down three zero. And then they had to win the next three just to force a game seven. And so much work to get to that game seven. What happened? Everybody got hurt and that's right.
Alan Rosenberg
They couldn't. They couldn't handle Derrick White.
Don Hahn
Saved him in game six. Otherwise it wouldn't even gone to seven.
Alan Rosenberg
I have.
Don Hahn
So that's.
Peter
They've.
Don Hahn
This is in their DNA.
Alan Rosenberg
I have a. Take that. I think I have to give it right now.
Peter
Okay.
Alan Rosenberg
But it's, it's. I'm teasing that I'll expound upon it more and let's talk about it.
Don Hahn
So you're gonna drop it and then come back later?
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, it's an hour from now. So let's talk about it too. That's 4:30, right?
Don Hahn
Let's give me a little tease.
Alan Rosenberg
So I'm gonna hit it right now. It needs to be said. I have. I have bad news. I'm afraid I've got a bit of bad news for a rather loud contingency in the city. It's over. Tibbs is back.
Peter
I thought the same thing.
Alan Rosenberg
It's done.
Peter
I end the conversation.
Alan Rosenberg
He's back.
Peter
I thought the exact same thing when they won that game, I said, I don't think there's a scenario now where you can find. I mean, if they lost the next.
Alan Rosenberg
Four games, so what? So if they, if they. Okay, I suppose if they lose by 35 in the next four games and we never talk about Dom, we could maybe revisit, but that's not going to happen.
Peter
So.
Alan Rosenberg
So it's over. Like, he. They already are up one. Oh, on the Celtics in the second round. He saved. They must have done a group hug after that game yesterday, because that is a huge moment for him and this team. And by the way, you're talking about inches. I mean, if, if the foul on Brown is an eighth of a second later, he's shooting three free throws at.
Don Hahn
The end of the game.
Alan Rosenberg
Like, that's how close this thing was. But in the end, in all of the spots where over the last really month of close games, the Knicks have wilted. They didn't. And they weren't forcing isoball every time. They had offense that actually resembled an.
Don Hahn
Obi for that three, that put them up. Oh, yeah, like that. That. That was some play.
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, gee.
Don Hahn
How about you? How about the. The. The potential game winner by Brunson, the floater. That was a side out of bounds to towns, back to Brunson, and Brunson cuts up and then goes back door because it was a holiday. Or white that cheated.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, it was white.
Don Hahn
And then he's got. And then Horford, it comes. If Horford doesn't get there sooner, I think he makes that shot. But Horford made him shoot a little too high. That's why he missed. But that play on a side out, what a tremendous.
Alan Rosenberg
What a beautiful play that was. And I know Brunson's kicking himself because he hits that nine times out of 10 with Horford's arm extended. It's basically 11ft in the air. You're trying to get the ball.
Don Hahn
You gotta go a little higher up off the glass.
Alan Rosenberg
Is Horford a freak or what? The guy, no matter how old he gets the playoffs go. His minutes are up, five minutes a game. And if you watch every play, he's beating everyone up and down the court.
Don Hahn
But he was exhausted late. You could see he couldn't move.
Alan Rosenberg
He goes so hard.
Don Hahn
Yes, he's a man.
Peter
And then also.
Don Hahn
But I like what you said. I like what you said because I'm hoping people recognize the adjustments that started to happen in that game. And it wasn't as simple as take away the three, which is what Orlando was doing. It was more or Less change. The way they were playing pick and roll and they were pressing up and that was forcing Tatum to realize I got somebody in my face. And also getting Brown in one on ones. And Brown can't help it either. He gets a one on one. It's like, here we go, I'm going to take it. And they never wanted to just go like blow by to the basketball because the Knicks weren't giving up the drive. They were basically saying, you want to take step backs, take a step back.
Alan Rosenberg
Right. We'll live with that.
Don Hahn
And they.
Alan Rosenberg
And they had. And they had a historically bad game from behind the three point line and.
Peter
No poor Zingus pretty much in the second half.
Don Hahn
Big story.
Peter
So. But again, no apologies. You got one. And as every game goes by, a little bit more pressure on The Boston Celtics. 1-800-919-3776. We got a huge show. Let's talk about a Tuesday. That's what that is.
Don Hahn
Yep.
Peter
Names, rebranded, but still the feeling is.
Alan Rosenberg
The exact same feeling.
Peter
Right? Like.
Alan Rosenberg
Right. Like you love it.
Peter
Playing like every New Yorker loves to do.
Alan Rosenberg
And it's great when you're rebranding something because you got a sponsor. That's what you're looking for in radio.
Peter
It's the essence of radio.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah. If you want to have a job.
Don Hahn
Big guest today.
Alan Rosenberg
Go ahead.
Don Hahn
Spike Lee at 5.
Peter
Oh, I thought you were going to say big fraud.
Alan Rosenberg
No, no.
Don Hahn
Yeah, so. So Mike Greenberg this morning said something about Spike Lee that I have to tell Spike Lee about. And he needs to know what was said.
Alan Rosenberg
Badmouth him.
Don Hahn
Well, it wasn't a bad mouth. It was more of a like. Because we know Spike Lee wasn't at the game last night in Boston. He was at the Met Gala.
Peter
Exactly.
Don Hahn
Here in New York City. Now, I can tell you he was watching on his phone the whole time. So we know he's a psycho fan, but he did not go to Boston because of the Met Gala. And I'm gonna let Spike know what Greenie said that he needs to do as a true fan. Okay, for game two.
Peter
Now, Timothy Chalamet is somebody you would think would be at the Met Gala, right? Big Nick fan. No, he stayed home, watched the game.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, he didn't even go.
Don Hahn
Yeah, too big. Didn't go to Boston. I mean, he's not used to.
Alan Rosenberg
He didn't go to Boston.
Don Hahn
They were in Detroit then. Yeah, he stayed.
Alan Rosenberg
He was in Detroit.
Don Hahn
No. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. Timothy was there. Oh, no.
Alan Rosenberg
For the games.
Don Hahn
Yes.
Alan Rosenberg
Okay.
Don Hahn
Detroit, for the games. In that I don't know.
Peter
Spike doesn't need to go to the Met Gala. I mean, he's established.
Don Hahn
Well, I think he had. I think they were. There was something important happening at the Met Gala. Yeah, he needed to be there.
Peter
So something important happening in Boston. See, here's the thing.
Alan Rosenberg
You do have to. You do have to clear this first so we don't look bad. Because the theme of the Met Gala was the thing about black fashion last night. So Spike might have felt the word dandy.
Peter
Dandy.
Alan Rosenberg
What's the black dandy? Or whatever. So maybe Spike felt some sort of specific connection or they reached out. Now, that being said, we have to get an answer from though, because there's no way it was easy for him.
Don Hahn
We need to find out.
Alan Rosenberg
And was he watching on his phone at the table?
Peter
Yeah, it's fraudulent behavior.
Don Hahn
He was wearing that. He's of orange in his outfit to make sure everybody knew that he had his fandom.
Peter
The Knicks appreciate.
Alan Rosenberg
Or was it, you know, or was it a situation, like we said, where Michael would be stuck going because Jody would want to go? Like, is it one of those situations where he just had to go.
Don Hahn
I think he probably had a, you know, he committed previously and it just didn't work out. But he's going to join us at five and we'll get to the bottom of all that stuff. And also if he's going to be at Game 2 and how he's feeling about things this early, pretty excited about it.
Peter
Let's. Let's get to the fans because I love it. Excited, let's go. I don't even have to give the number because the numbers are jammed right now. The lines are jam. Jimmy in Connecticut started here on Don Han and Rosenberg. What's up, buddy?
Caller
Hey, guys. So listen, I was watching the game transpire last night, and I went into last night's game thinking, okay, as long in any way we can get a split in Boston, we're good. But I said to myself, we're never going to get another opportunity this series where Boston's going to miss this many threes, they're not going to shoot 25%, probably for another game. So I said, now we have to win this game. Now we talk about they're not going to be cold, but, yeah, I want. There's something you should think about. The Celtics have played a lot of basketball over the last three years. Could it be catching up to their legs and could that make them not shoot threes at the rate that they maybe did in the years past or this regular season? And my other point is this question. I'll let you weigh in. Alan. Would you consider starting Mitchell Robinson so he's not in when they're. So he didn't. When they're not in the penalty and then getting cat in maybe like midway through the first quarter.
Don Hahn
I'll answer your last question first. No, I wouldn't change anything right now because that's the rhythm that they're in. You don't want to disrupt anything at this point of the playoffs. So that's the answer to that one. It's a very interesting point you make though, about fatigue. Remember Tatum, even though he didn't play a lot, was on the Olympic team. Drew Holiday, right? Derek White, they were all, you know, they, they didn't have as. Remember, they went all the way to the finals, then they went right to training camp for the, for the Olympic team and then played in the Olympics. So their break was short. They had a long summer where it comes to basketball because they went all the way to the finals. Is that a contributing factor? I, I don't know. They just had what, what, six, five, six days off.
Peter
They played last Tuesday.
Don Hahn
Yes, I, I don't want to get too caught up in that, but they are banged up. They some stuff and you know, it could be something that once again, as Peter mentioned, the tibs factor, Tibbs builds up your calluses throughout the season. So when you get here, it's not a shock to the system that you're playing 45 minutes a night every game.
Peter
And that's, that's certainly going to help them. And we also talk about Porzingis being out and they missed threes, but they missed him. Cat was in foul trouble. I mean, you know, Chu was in the game in the first half. I mean, there's a lot of things. The Knicks can play better too, but.
Don Hahn
The fact is their turnovers were brutal. They could rebound better. They had a bad first half and they were managed to survive it.
Peter
Let's go to Dave and East Meadow. You're on espn New York.
Caller
Hey, guys. So really pumped up about last night. I mean, I think part of the reason Boston shooting these threes, we've seen them play us all regular season and they killed us with the three. I mean, Tatum even, he buried us in one of our last games this year by hitting it like an unconscious three. I just think that they've got so much self confidence in the three. Plus they had a layoff after Orlando. But I got to tell you on our end, I mean, Reggie and Harlan, they were so good on the game. And Reggie kept pointing out over and over, Josh Hart's energy, like tipping balls, keeping balls alive. He was an animal last night. And then when Brunson looked like he got a little tired at the very end, that's when other guys stepped up and Monica McNutt pointed it out to you guys. Allen on the post game. Now all of a sudden, bridges with a 3, OG with a 3. I mean, the Josh Hart pass to Anunoby, that where he dunked it and got the N1.
Don Hahn
The long rebound. Yeah, Hart got to long rebounds, and they were able to get some transition. It's exactly what happened. So it was a 20 to 5 run to end the quarter after they went down.
Peter
Right.
Don Hahn
And that run was all an obi and Hart. That's what that run was. It was just. They turned it up. You got a couple of quick buckets. The Celtics started settling for threes and missing, and it was like a. It was a perfect storm. And that's what. The example you gave Don, is a team that. A lot of teams at that point, after losing four games in the regular season, being in Boston, you know, it's game one. All the stuff that you feel. Sometimes teams let go of the rope, but this team doesn't have that in them. They don't let go. And they kept fighting. And the Celtics, with what they did, they almost seemed. The Celtics almost seem to be like, all right, let's go. Cruise control. We're up 20. We own this team. And that was the dangerous thing that happened to them. And that's why you want to watch what happens in Game 2, because you don't expect them to shoot as poorly. You don't expect the Knicks to play as poorly as they did in the first half, either. That's a lot of things to watch now in game two. I just feel like there's so much pressure now on Boston to win game two that if you're the Knicks, you can play free and almost try to see if you can apply even more pressure and see how they handle it.
Peter
Yeah, I think you just got to go for it, right? And you can't be like, all right, we got our one. Just keep playing the way you're playing. That's all Tibbs. Say what you want about Tibbs. The fact is he gets his guys ready. They never give up. And that style of player. But that also is learning from the coach who just never lets up. That's the. I've said it time and time again during the course of the season, the one thing I hate about the NBA is that there's so much load management teams not caring. The Knicks always bring it every single night. And that's something that I think is very rare in the NBA. Most teams would have just folded up. Shop will get you on Wednesday. Not the Knicks. They put themselves in a position. And that's why then I go away. You went to the Garden to do the pre. We were talking, it was eight and a half point spread. I took the Knicks. The Knicks just don't go out easy, man. They get blown out. They've got blown out by the Celtics. But down the stretching, big moments in the playoffs, much to the chagrin of a lot of fans, these games always seem to go down to the nub. So I took those eight and a half points and a couple of bucks.
Alan Rosenberg
Good for you.
Don Hahn
That's good. Yeah.
Peter
David in Elizabeth, you're on ESPN New York. What's up, David?
Caller
What up, Don? What up, huh? What up, Peter? Yo, yo, yo, before we get. Before we get into it, Peter, yo, I ain't gonna talk smack or disrespect. I know you're a big Celtics fan. You know, a lot of flowers out to you for that. But I'm gonna be honest with you, man. A wind's a winner. We're gonna take it, man. And yo, did you see that barrage that Brunson put on with the three? Man, I was doing laundry with my girl. Yo, everybody just staring at me because I'm yelling three pointer. I'm yelling all types of pro language. It's crazy, man.
Don Hahn
So wait, David, David, paint me the picture. So you're at the laundromat?
Caller
Yes, sir.
Don Hahn
Right. All right, so you got like. You got like two machines going, right? Paint the picture for me of exactly what this looked like, because we're talking.
Alan Rosenberg
About you on the phone.
Don Hahn
It's like 9, 30, 10 o'clock.
Caller
Yeah, I was watching it. Yep, I'm watching it on my phone. Me and my girl are folding clothes. She keeps looking at me like, do not go crazy. If they score and we're down 20, all you see is just runs in a barrage of threes. OG Coming back, defense, I'm. I'm kissing three pointers in the sky. I'm yelling. The lady at the laundry mat's looking at me like, what is wrong with this guy? And then when we tied it. Oh, man, you should have heard out loud. I was cursing. She's like, my girl's like, yo, channel chill. You're gonna get his band here. No, we're not. We paid money to come here, David.
Peter
So it was just beautiful, one Jersey guy to another.
Don Hahn
I love it.
Peter
Nick, playoff. Nick, playoff game. Nick's are in the playoffs, second round, and you're at the Laundromat with your girl. What did you do wrong? What did you owe her? You had to be there last night. Tell me. Tell me. I won't tell any.
Caller
I'll be honest, Don. You know, it's funny. I told her to listen to me while I talk to you guys. She's not. So I can tell the truth. If I didn't go, I wouldn't hear that. And if I didn't go, I wouldn't hear the end. I kept telling her that, yo, please, I gotta watch Nixon. You watch Nixon next every night. I'm like, yo, come on, please. And she's like, no, the kids got uniforms to watch. So I'm like, all right, man. I'm like, yo, I could watch it.
Peter
On my phone, you know?
Alan Rosenberg
You know, that's the. That's the. That's the smart piece there. You know, it's like. It'd be very easy to kill him on, like, how. But the truth is. And I do think happy wife, happy life can be an overrated line because people can use it as an excuse to just be completely whipped and weak and do nothing. Yeah, but in this case, you have your phone. It's game. Freak out. Bring your phone.
Don Hahn
It's definitely a. Now, did you leave at halftime for this, or were you the whole game?
Peter
Yeah.
Don Hahn
Oh, we let him go.
Peter
We're up against the clock. I just.
Don Hahn
Yeah, he gets so, like, look at him, all wrapped up in the clock stuff now.
Peter
I knew he's a professional.
Don Hahn
See this?
Alan Rosenberg
You didn't know this. I don't.
Peter
Just always barking orders at me, like.
Don Hahn
Bray, no one's yelling. Click.
Peter
There was a story. It wasn't like, oh, I. I could just bring the phone and do laundry with my. My. My girl. I don't know if it's his wife or his girlfriend.
Don Hahn
Is that his girl?
Peter
His girl? It was because he. He. He used all his chips, right? Too many regular season Nick and Met games, and now it cost him a second.
Alan Rosenberg
But by the way, that is a thing. Your lady, if she's not a big sports fan, may not understand, like, the difference between games. And you're like, oh, it's playoffs. And it's like, yeah, but if every night you say there's something you gotta do. And now if he's smart and he's done that he better be saving his chips for a game six or a game seven.
Don Hahn
Well, he just did.
Alan Rosenberg
So that's game one's a good one.
Don Hahn
By sacrificing tonight last night, that was smart. Now game five or whatever, she can't say a word to it.
Peter
Or she's like, oh, well, you can do that. So why can't you do that all the time? Just bring your phone. Now he's, now he's apple picking during the NFL season. See what happens. You know how I feel.
Don Hahn
What's. What's wrong? Well, we should play the Q Tip version, which is way more updated and way better. There's also Curtis Blow, who. Who also did a version.
Alan Rosenberg
Was it. No, no. Dougie Fresh.
Don Hahn
Dougie Fresh. Dougie Fresh.
Alan Rosenberg
That. The Dougie Fresh one?
Don Hahn
That's fairly new as well. Q tip's more like 10 years ago. Yeah, but it's good.
Alan Rosenberg
I liked it too.
Don Hahn
So can we find those versions?
Peter
Jay, Everybody's song is cool.
Don Hahn
This is Dougie Fresh.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, this is the one this year.
Don Hahn
Yeah, this is the commercial with Clyde. But anyway, I completely understand the guy who did the original song. Everybody knows the story, right? Yeah, he was from Long island and he was making jingles like. He was. He was. He called himself Jesse James. He was. He actually was a rapper. Yeah, but he was like a Vanilla Ice type rapper. It was like pop stuff. He did have one song that kind of had a little bit of pop somewhere. Yeah, yeah, but. And he came up with this, like, because he was a big Knicks fan and they loved it. And then he. You know how much money he made off the NBA? Because the NBA caught wind of it and NBA entertainment was like, hey, can you do some other stuff for us? So, you know, what was the NBA? It's fantastic. Was that the. In the 90s?
Peter
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Don Hahn
He did all the commercials for that. Made a ton of money. You know, he's one of the owners of the Atlanta Hawks now.
Alan Rosenberg
He's One of the owners of the Hawks.
Don Hahn
Yes. Jesse Itzel.
Alan Rosenberg
I know he's rich. I didn't know he was one of the.
Don Hahn
Yeah. Like, he. All off of that.
Peter
But they're all corny.
Alan Rosenberg
No, no, no, no.
Don Hahn
He starts off that way.
Alan Rosenberg
What's amazing is it shows how if you're smart enough.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Alan Rosenberg
You could have literally no music talent whatsoever and still make money off of music.
Don Hahn
Well, it's marketing.
Peter
Yeah.
Alan Rosenberg
No, he figured something out.
Don Hahn
There was a jingle.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah. He basically figured out jingles.
Don Hahn
He literally made a jingle.
Alan Rosenberg
Very.
Don Hahn
It's pretty good stanza.
Peter
Yeah. Just. It's just getting. It's all nostalgic. We've had this conversation many times.
Alan Rosenberg
I'm not gonna fight it.
Peter
I listen to the 80s channel. Songs that I would never even think about listening to in the 80s I listen to now, and I'm like. I enjoy it because it takes me back to a simpler time.
Don Hahn
You know what I heard today? Love that space. Space age love song. It is. It is like one of these weird songs. It's like an earworm.
Peter
Right.
Don Hahn
And it just, like, the song stayed in my head for the rest of the day.
Peter
It gets you, right.
Don Hahn
I think there might be eight words in all the lyrics. And he says it over and over and over again, but it just stuck with.
Peter
Well, you know what I heard this weekend, because it was the. It was the top 40 from 82. Oh, that's a good year. Club. Did he.
Don Hahn
Oh, my God.
Alan Rosenberg
Genius of love.
Peter
Yeah.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Alan Rosenberg
It's a bizarre song.
Peter
It's a bizarre song. Like, there's a member of the.
Don Hahn
But it's in a commercial now.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, no, it is.
Peter
I think they said they introduced it. It's like one of the most sampled songs.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, it became huge in hip hop. Hip hop made it huge. But when you hear the song alone.
Don Hahn
Did Mariah. Did Mariah use it? Try as a sample. Yeah.
Peter
James Brown, like, it's just. It's a very weird song, but it's got.
Alan Rosenberg
Does that. It has the. What you gonna do when you get out of jail. That's in there, right?
Peter
Yes.
Don Hahn
Yeah, I know.
Peter
I don't know.
Alan Rosenberg
And then. And then he who shall not be named. When he used that song with Mariah Carey.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Alan Rosenberg
When it got to the part what you gonna do when you get out of jail? You know, he was always whispering every song. I just is the corniest thing ever. He was like. He was like, I'm going to make a remix. It was found, but by the way, give. I don't care. History can't change anything. Did. He killed it with that remix, though? It really was. That was. That was during his era of every remix was.
Peter
Because you're seeing, like, the sketches now of the trial, like, he's gray. I don't.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, I guess it's just as simple as dress. You're not. Well, you're not doing anything.
Don Hahn
He's not having any work done.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, he can't do. He's not. They're not giving him his stuff, wherever.
Don Hahn
He is right now. They're just letting him get ashy and gray.
Alan Rosenberg
He's in his 50s.
Don Hahn
He's human.
Alan Rosenberg
So, yeah, he's in. He's a guy in his 50s who's just gray.
Don Hahn
He's human.
Alan Rosenberg
But it looks so astounding because he looked like him when he left, and now he's like, already. And I thought about that yesterday. I'm like, wait, the Met gala is happening where he would always be there. And now you're sitting there getting sketched.
Peter
In court and just a couple of miles away.
Alan Rosenberg
Miles away.
Peter
It's so crazy.
Don Hahn
It is so close, yet so far.
Peter
Let's go to Chris in the UPS truck here on ESPN Europe. What's up, Chris?
Caller
Hey, what's up, gentlemen? Man, listen, I am having such a great day at work. I'm not even sweating while working. It's just a good day. You know, I already called earlier and spoke to Bart. I handed him one Peter I'm a little more lenient with, because Peter plays both sides and he does it very well. And I'm actually a big fan of Peter. I let him rock a little bit, but I hear the nervous in his voice. Yeah, but I. I got. I got kicked out my house last night by my wife. You know, when. When. When Brunson started killing Horford for those threes, you know, I woke my son up and I said, yo, you gotta see this. You know, my son's three years old. He doesn't know what the hell's going on. So my wife. My wife kicked me out the house for that. But let me tell you, we are here. No game's gonna be perfect.
Peter
We.
Caller
We. Every game is different. Like you guys say all the time. But at least we punched them in the mouth first. Now we're going to see how they respond. And let's go. I'm still going. Nixon 7. You know, I hope. I hope we get another one. But we got our foots on their throat. We got to just keep it there.
Peter
No, that's exactly the attitude you're supposed to have you're up one nothing. I have to apologize for it. Don't get too deep in the weeds analyzing it.
Don Hahn
Just feel good about it. Feel good and see where it goes next. But I love the fact that you get a day just. Again, people are going to start having. Tomorrow we'll have the anxiety about game two, but today you got to enjoy it.
Peter
Why is the instinct to, like, be skew negative while the Celtics handed it to him?
Alan Rosenberg
No.
Peter
Poor zinc.
Don Hahn
Come on, Don. You know how it is. It's bulletproof vest, you all. Well, I think about it. This is what you do. Because when you. When you skew negative, it's like protecting yourself from the inevitable failure that you're expecting. That's literally what this is about. It's a protection. That's all it is. You don't want to expose yourself to optimism because you know that once you do, you are basically opening yourself up to just being carved up, and you don't want that.
Peter
Or is it? There's also a segment of the Knick fans who believed blindly going into the series. Now they feel emboldened and think, like our last caller, they're gonna win in seven. And the instinct is, oh, let's just pump the brakes, all right? Let's relax here. It's just one game. You know, it's just odd.
Don Hahn
Players are saying that, which is a good thing.
Peter
Well, you want the players to say that, but from a fan base, I think just. Just revel in it, man. Have fun. You got to rub it all over yourself because there'll be a point on Wednesday where you're not going to be thinking about Monday, and it's all going to be about living in that moment. Yeah, let's go to cull him in the Bronx. You're on espn.
Don Hahn
I know he's all fired up.
Caller
What's going on? Don Peter, Hollywood, Han. Yeah, I am fired up. I'm still on cloud nine after. After that win. That was exciting. You know, I was getting close to being. You know, that was a full nude game on that comeback. Like, I was just. I was just revel. I was just reveling in it. But, you know, the. Like you guys said, you guys made it, like, a lot of the points already with. Obviously, the Celtics didn't play their best game. They are the champs. You're not going to see them miss all those shots all the time. But people are doing a lot of the complaining about Mitchell Robinson. Obviously, he's going to get targeted with the rebounding. I mean, with the free throw shooting. Situation. Yeah but you look at the box score he had the highest plus minus on the team. I think his positives outweigh the negatives.
Don Hahn
And I think the factor call they said they stopped doing it.
Caller
They stopped doing it later in the.
Peter
Game they stopped foul.
Don Hahn
It didn't make like think about it. The guy couldn't make a free throw. It was innocent. He was three for 10. It was in his head and it was working because he was making their defense better. So they would have to get him out of the game. That's why Achua came in because tips is like we can't keep doing this.
Peter
No.
Don Hahn
I need somebody that can make a free throw. So you took him out of the game and then they just stopped doing it. So Robinson came back in the game. They would not go back to following him on purpose to get him out off the court. So that that's.
Caller
I'm not really sure why they did it. I'm not really sure why they. Why they stopped doing it and everything but his him being on the court allows you having a true anchor center on the court and it allows OG and Bridges to stay outside and do what they do best and they don't have to constantly come inside and assist on the interior which in allowing more open threes.
Peter
Now listen they didn't defend the three well us so many uncontested threes. But what did this game and the last game they played in the regular season have in common? Robinson was in both games and both games really came down to both were in overtime. Celtics won the one then the one last night and the fact that Robinson was in the game and the Celtics.
Don Hahn
They didn't have any without poor Zingis. Robinson was the biggest player on the floor so they had to always put two people on him to keep him from getting rebounds and he was tapping and that's what Cullum was saying. Then the Wings Hart on and Obi Bridges could run to the long rebounds and get to those rather than go inside to help out on the inside.
Peter
And the last regular season game I think they were 19 for 49 from 3. It wasn't as bad but again just 19 threes and 15 threes this time.
Don Hahn
Where they teamed a lot like remember the first game of the season opening night 29.
Peter
Right.
Don Hahn
Remember they missed their. They missed their last 11 or something to they were one shy of the record.
Peter
Yeah.
Don Hahn
And they couldn't make one the rest.
Peter
Of the game think was the number 29, 24 and 27. It might have been those three in the, in the blowouts, it was that high?
Don Hahn
No, 29. It was 29. And then after that it was like 17, 19, 17. The only one that got over 20 was out.
Peter
Okay, but, but they shot much better. Three.
Don Hahn
Oh yeah.
Peter
The percentage wasn't great in the last meeting. No, Mitch was in low 30s. It went to overtime. So. So I guess now can we throw away the first three meetings because of the fact now the last two have been close and Mitchell Robinson was in both games.
Don Hahn
Yeah, the first game was the ugly one. The second one got away from them.
Peter
Yes.
Don Hahn
And then the third one they had the lead and gave it away.
Peter
All right, 1-800-919-3776 again, lots coming up at 4:30. Let's talk about it Tuesday. Ian at 6, Mike Lee at 5.
Alan Rosenberg
Come on.
Peter
Got to get to what happened to the Yankees last night.
Don Hahn
Well, it was one thing happened, a bad decision and a guy that's just starting to let us know that this is not his stage.
Peter
And the Mets had a winlon doorway to big night. So there's a lot going on up until 7:00 here on Don Soto Smile.
Don Hahn
Well, was Soto happy?
Alan Rosenberg
If he wasn't happy.
Don Hahn
If not, the wind doesn't mean anything if Soto doesn't look happy.
Peter

Game time is brought to you by Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey because. Wait, it's game time, fellas. Am I gonna have to do it myself? Yes, I'm gonna have to do it myself. It's Tully time. You got me all revved up. They got a phrase for that now. There's a phrase for what just happened to me.
Alan Rosenberg
There's a phrase.
Peter
Yeah, I was just about to scream Tully time and they pulled the plug. I'm gonna have to jump in. A cold show.
Alan Rosenberg
It's the. The.
Don Hahn
I feel like we need to redo it though.
Alan Rosenberg
But the Tully time he hit was so shocked.
Don Hahn
You needed to like almost carry the time part out too. Like, you know.
Peter
But I thought I'd tell it, you know, a little something different. Right? Kind of.
Don Hahn
That was good.
Peter
Leave him. Guess I'll do it again.
Don Hahn
I know you will.
Peter
The Mets continue their series with the Diamondbacks with coverage immediately following the Dan Grassa show on 880 at 9 o'clock. And the Yankees will attempt to continue their series with the Padres at 7:05. That was obviously written by Anthony is not thinking that the rain is going to cooperate. Tullamore do the original triple distilled triple blend in a triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a telemore do or try the new Tullamore Dew Honey during tonight's action. Glasses up to enjoying Tullamore do responsibly.
Don Hahn
A little bit of rain tonight, but it should.
Peter
We should be okay There was a typhoon almost.
Don Hahn
It felt like last night. Last night.
Peter
Because again, this is like they were.
Don Hahn
Pairing up two by two at the stage.
Peter
Right. And the Yankees probably wish the game was postponed the way that it ended.
Don Hahn
Well, think about it. They wanted to get to a point where they can get the game in so it can count. Radon came back out after the short 25 minute delay.
Peter
Yeah.
Don Hahn
And he was good. He was. He was really good. And at that point, what you wanted, you know, if God loved the Yankees like we all believe he does, then the heaven should have opened again. All right, call the game. But instead it was just a mist. Wasn't so bad. And so, you know, not gonna happen.
Peter
Very average after the Torpedo Bat series with the Brewers. Right.
Don Hahn
Remember the Torpedo Bat era?
Peter
It's so unfair.
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, I remember. I remember those days.
Don Hahn
Remember that era?
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, I remember those days.
Peter
Well, knowing baseball, since they don't tell you anything, they might have confiscated those bats and not told anybody.
Don Hahn
No, I. You see them.
Peter
I'm. I'm joking.
Don Hahn
Oh, I'm sorry.
Peter
I'm just saying that baseball never let us know that they existed. And then all of a sudden, the Yankees hit a billion home runs. And it's not really. It. It just. They're just. They seem a bit off. But you know what? They're in a league where Just a bit off. It's probably good enough to go to the World Series.
Don Hahn
I've got it. I got to talk about it. I've got it now. I have one.
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, you. You didn't have one.
Don Hahn
I didn't have to talk about it. Oh, I got.
Peter
Not now.
Don Hahn
4:30. I've got one. I'm gonna come up. It's gonna come off bad, but I'm sorry, I gotta be me.
Peter
You glanced up at the TV and then I.
Don Hahn
And I'm just. I'm done. I'm so done.
Peter
Oh, okay.
Alan Rosenberg
So don't forget right now.
Peter
Let's talk about it Tuesday. Wasn't that.
Don Hahn
If it was Canadian, would it be. Let's talk about it?
Peter
Yes, it would be. Definitely. Let's talk about it.
Don Hahn
I like that. I like that better.
Peter
Let's go to Jim in the car. You're on espn, New York. Hi, Jim.
E
Hey, guys. Longtime listener First. I'm calling. It's a new show.
Don Hahn
Cool.
E
So happy for you guys. Peter, congratulations. I know that's long overdue. You're probably sick of hearing it. But I don't know if congratulations is necessarily for your new baby daughter or that you have the best wife ever to Let her name the baby's middle name after a football player. I don't even know if that's the case, but if it is the case, God bless her and God bless you.
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, no, that is the case. And it was my wife's idea. I just want to be clear about that.
E
Oh, okay. So she's even cooler.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, she won some points.
E
And then we have.
Caller
Good.
E
And then, Han, congratulations again. I listened from the very first show where you guys got together, and from then until now, the it has gotten better and better every single day. So awesome.
Don Hahn
Awesome.
E
And again on the next broadcast. Amazing.
Don Hahn
Thank you.
Alan Rosenberg
Thanks, man.
Don Hahn
You're saying it was really bad to start now shut up. Now it's finally.
Alan Rosenberg
Will you stop being such a baby for five seconds? That was a compliment. And new shows do take time and it has been sounding great.
E
Flowers. I want to give you guys flowers all the time. I never have the ball is to call up and give it to you guys. Sorry, but very nice. Don, Just keep leveling up. Keep leveling up. You are so steady and everything you do, you're talking about minutes now on the show, like, you know what's coming next is the Rangers. Seeing that face on screen. That's what's next.
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, well, your mouth to God's ears.
Don Hahn
Yeah. Efforting, efforting.
Peter
Thank you, Jim. I appreciate that.
E
All right, Sorry, guys. The reason that I'm calling, Han, you said it perfectly. Best before. The protection against the inevitable feel of failure. That is exact. I went through yesterday's game. Oh, okay. Positive. We win on the road. Great first game of the entire series. Amazing. Right again, Brunson.
Don Hahn
Great.
E
We have a great minutes from Anunoby. McBride had some good minutes in there. Like, I look at all the pods and I'm like, oh, but wait, there was no kpop. One of the worst shooting nights historically ever. Celtics.
Don Hahn
You're protecting yourself.
E
It didn't have. Yeah, I know. You had Drew Holiday. Does he even have another leg? Jaylen Brown doesn't look that good. Is he going to bounce back? Is he going to get better through the series? I don't know what to feel. I'm happy that they won game one. That gives me a lot of confidence, to be honest. But I still have that inevitable feeling of if they're just going to get it right, they're going to hit more threes. Right? Like they're going to get.
Peter
Okay, well, because so what?
Don Hahn
You got one. But.
Peter
But here, here the things.
Don Hahn
They gave you one.
Peter
And thank you for the phone call.
Alan Rosenberg
All right.
Peter
I don't expect them to shoot like they, like, shot in Game one. They'll probably be lights out, but you now know they're capable of being this bad.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Peter
Is it possible they could do it three more times?
Don Hahn
But you got to see a lot of things that they want to do and got a win out of it.
Peter
That's it.
Don Hahn
Like, that's how I look at it. I look at it as we got a blueprint of what they want to do, and we got the win as well.
Peter
Now they're.
Don Hahn
That's.
Alan Rosenberg
That's a.
Peter
That's optimistic. They're going to go to work and they're going to take the Knicks a lot more seriously. I would. And. And I would expect a much better Celtics team on Wednesday. However, I expect a better Nick team.
Alan Rosenberg
I was going to say, because, I mean, look at. Look at the shooting percentage. I mean, didn't even shoot well.
Don Hahn
The foul trouble early. Hart was saying, do we have it? Hart was saying that. He's like, we got beat with bats for six games. We brought our bats here and realized we don't need them. Like, the physicality is not the same as the Detroit series. They were playing extra physical, getting called for fouls, and they're like, oh, okay, that's how this series is going to be. And they needed a minute to adjust. You ever see the movie Brothers McMullen?
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, it's been a long time.
Don Hahn
Such a good movie, right?
Peter
Probably saw it like in. I don't think I've seen it since. Like, would it come out, like 96, probably 90s? Yeah.
Don Hahn
But my favorite quote from that movie. I keep quotes from movies and stuff that just whatever reason. And it made me think of it while we were talking about how fans are. And he said, I like being a pessimist. It helps me deal with my inevitable failure. That's Barry, the main character. Like, that's literally what you do as a fan. You be a pessimist because you feel like it helps you cope with the inevitable failure you're expecting of your team.
Peter
You know what? I just thought about that movie. Two different movies. But the way Jersey people love Clerks is the way Long island people love Brothers McMullen. Right. It's the same kind of like you're from Long Island.
Don Hahn
Such a Nassau county area. Like, all that stuff. It was so great. Great.
Peter
Yeah, that was. That was an awesome. But I. I should see that again. It's been a. It's been a while.
Alan Rosenberg
There's so many things I have to see or re. See. I got a lot to deal with. It's Brothers McMullen. Worth putting at the top of the list.
Don Hahn
Oh, yeah, that's. No, no, you'll get a lot out of that. It's very good.
Alan Rosenberg
All right, Don, Chick, let's go.
Don Hahn
Wow.
Alan Rosenberg
Come on. He's not sure compared to the movies he hasn't seen. You think about the stuff that's on the list. What was.
Peter
What we just rated the two last.
Don Hahn
Oh, I'm sorry. That.
Alan Rosenberg
Big ones last week.
Don Hahn
You mean of movies you've never seen?
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, that would be. I don't think.
Don Hahn
And this guy's talking about.
Peter
I was trying to get a reaction out of you, but it's still Taxi Driver. Yeah. No, there was no.
Don Hahn
What was it. You saw that. What was the one that you said last week? Oh.
Peter
Oh, no, no.
Don Hahn
Was it.
Peter
Was it Fast Times?
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Peter
Never saw Fast Times.
Don Hahn
That's. That's. That's all right.
Peter
But there was another one that I.
Don Hahn
Was like, yeah, there's a classic he hasn't seen.
Peter
You don't remember, guys?
Alan Rosenberg
Was it One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest?
Don Hahn
Oh, my God.
Alan Rosenberg
And that. And that's what led me to say to Natalie, we're going to go on a jack bench.
Peter
I.
Don Hahn
Excuse me.
Alan Rosenberg
A Jack binge.
Don Hahn
Oh, really?
Alan Rosenberg
Not Jack Daniels. I'm a fan of that also.
Don Hahn
I was thinking you thought something was not on that.
Alan Rosenberg
What the hell is that?
Don Hahn
I was asking you what that is. That.
Peter
Something new. Goes back to 16.
Don Hahn
