Don LaGreca
The kids are still at practice and I have no idea what's for dinner. You can get a rotisserie chicken and two sides for just $15 in as fast as an hour with Walmart express delivery.
Peter Rosenberg
Who said that?
Don LaGreca
Who's in my house? Don't play with me.
Peter Rosenberg
Cause I'm not the one.
Don LaGreca
It's just your friendly Walmart announcer. This is a commercial. Oh, okay. You were saying dinner for a family was just $15?
Peter Rosenberg
Yep.
Don LaGreca
It'll be at your door by the time you get the kids home from practice. Order now. Welcome to your Walmart. Subject to availability restrictions and fees apply. Now that was a helpful commercial.
Michael Kay
Don.
Peter Rosenberg
She fell in love with the sex. Don. Sauce was everywhere.
Michael Kay
And Rosenberg, if you want to stay up, he's got the energy that matters.
Peter Rosenberg
This isn't North Dakota, this is New York.
Michael Kay
This is Don Han and Rosenberg.
Don LaGreca
John Frenchy Fuqua on 8 80, ESPN.
Michael Kay
And the ESPN New York app. Well. Well, I'll tell you what, pop me up even hotter, Jacob. I'm still coming off the injury, for God's sake. You know what I mean? Still, give me a little. Go ahead, talk to me.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't believe. There you go. That's like you're Mitchell Robinson. You can't play. Second of back to backs yet, by the way. First of back to backs.
Michael Kay
Exactly. Whichever one it is. But no, I feels very good to be back in a room with Don McGregor. It feels very good to be here during the start of a baseball season. Is this a real thing?
Peter Rosenberg
It's happening.
Michael Kay
It's that beautiful baseball weather you dream about. You know what I said today? I think you're gonna love this take from me, by the way. I think you're gonna completely be in lockstep. Go ahead with how I feel. I was texting with my Maryland friends about Maryland basketball, and I'll get into that after 4:00. An absolute crazy situation over there and I was complaining about something and a friend goes, hey, well, let's talk about something good. Baseball season started opening day, and I said, can I be honest, Don? I'm curious of whether you're gonna disagree with me or be in lockstep. I said, let's be honest. March 27, 30 degree baseball is basically the equivalent of the hall of Fame game. The first week of the season's like the hall of Fame game to me. This doesn't even feel really. It doesn't feel like interesting. I'm sorry, Don. Even if you had tickets and you're going today, you're seeing the Mets or the Yankees? Does this feel like opening day? It's freezing and horrible.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no. It's always that way. That is opening day. It's supposed to feel.
Michael Kay
It doesn't feel worse than. It's March 27th.
Peter Rosenberg
It's awful. It's not open on April 14th. When I was a kid. Yeah. Then you had a fighting chance of it being warm outside. But, dude, this is kind of what it's been for the last 20 years.
Michael Kay
It's so nonsense getting underway early.
Peter Rosenberg
But listen, there's a lot. There's a lot going on. We were just, you know, trying to figure out what the Giants were going to do at quarterback. You got the Knicks positioning themselves for the postseason, Rangers trying to make the post. It's not like we don't have things to talk about.
Michael Kay
Oh, things.
Peter Rosenberg
And things aren't going on. There's things, but now it's on, man. Because the thing about baseball, and I've used this analogy a lot, baseball's like the uncle that. That uncle that you like a lot. And he's coming over to stay. And he's coming over to stay for a while. Think about it like, you know, if you're a hockey fan, basketball fan, your team plays maybe four times a week, usually three times a week. So the uncle's in and out. He swings by, eats dinner, then he leaves. Sometimes he doesn't come back for a couple of days.
Michael Kay
Uncle Steve.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. And. But then he comes back later on and it's like, yeah, he's kind of in and out. Not a big deal.
Michael Kay
Actually, we can't use Unki Steve because that's Steve Cohen. Let's call that Uncle Doug.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. Football's once a week.
Michael Kay
Uncle Brian.
Peter Rosenberg
So that's the uncle that swings by for, like, Sunday dinner.
Michael Kay
I love Uncle Brian. But he doesn't live here. No, he doesn't live here. He flies in from LA once a year.
Peter Rosenberg
It's like, hey, we'll talk to you next Sunday. Save that for the conversation next week. Baseball's the uncle that's coming in. He's there every day. Uncle Dave, right? He's. He's. He's hanging in tight. Tighty whities on the. On. On the shower curtain. He's making himself at home. Okay. He's got his feet up on the couch.
Michael Kay
After a while, you're saying, uncle Dave, do us a favor. Put some pants on.
Peter Rosenberg
Come on, will you do something at the table? You know, it's one thing if you want to walk around in your room with your pants down. But, you know, can you come to the table at least with some. With some pants or shorts on? That's baseball. Baseball is here to stay. So it's going to be a daily conversation. But the reason it's so exciting and so much fun is, is that it's not. These teams have the top two of the top five odds of winning the World Series. We're just coming off a football season where both teams were putrid, Right? We got one basketball team that's good. The other basketball team's tanking, you know, so now you come in where both teams that represent New York are expected to do a lot of good things. So, yeah, there's a lot of excitement around. I was feeling it all day today. It's crazy. You're feeling it. I went and got my beard trimmed and I got a. Enjoy the games today because they're great over there. I'm walking down the street. Everybody's got a met hat on or a Yankee hat on. I'm here. Hey, it's opening day. Like, you get a feel like it's almost a holiday, so.
Michael Kay
Well, let me, let me.
Peter Rosenberg
Both teams being good, coming off an awful football season, I think people are more excited about this baseball season than ever, in my opinion.
Michael Kay
So I agree and disagree.
Peter Rosenberg
Good.
Michael Kay
I agree.
Peter Rosenberg
That's radio.
Michael Kay
I agree with you with regard to the Mets. I do not think Yankees fans are excited. And guess what? I don't think they should be. I don't think this team's going anywhere.
Peter Rosenberg
Wow.
Michael Kay
I'm sorry, when I say going anywhere, I don't mean being good. Of course they'll be good. They are designed to be good. They will win you 90 games this year. We know that. That's what they do. I heard Michael was on the air earlier already handing them the AL east going to the World Series. So no matter what happens with this team, we operate now in a world where you sign a $40 million a year pitcher who's your ace, who's now gone, Nothing changed. They're going to the World Series. Not happening. I'll bet with K right now they're not going the World Series.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, listen, World Series is tough because the Texas Rangers are back, so. And they won the World Series two years ago. And I think they got the best manager in the sport. And you. Nobody can make any kind of bold predictions because the Dodgers by far have the best odds. If I'm not mistaken, it's plus 250 for the Dodgers to win the World Series.
Michael Kay
That's insane.
Peter Rosenberg
Next up is at plus 800, like so. They are the favorite by far. No one has been this big a favorite. Vegas odds wise to win the World series in since 2002, when the Yankees had the best odds and they made the playoffs, got bounced very early. But we're talking for the first time in 23 years we've seen a team that have this kind of odds. And yet it's only a 25% chance, Peter. I mean, if you, if I told you Dodgers are the field, you would still take the field because there's still a 75% chance somebody other than the Dodgers are going to win. And the Dodgers are by far the biggest favorite. So it's so tough to win. That's what Yankee fans and even Met fans are preparing themselves for. Just being the best team, just spending the most money, having the most stars, having Vegas predicting you to win doesn't mean Jack. It's a long season. Things can happen now. You're right. Having Cole out, having Heel out, having Stanton now does take a little bit of the buzz out of it. But you saw the Mets last year. They were out of it. Done. I was on the air saying sell in June. Well, they'll have Heel back by June. Michael was talking. They think they might be able to get Stanton sometime in May back and they are equipped to see if they can find a way to navigate through coal. So I think there is still excitement around the Yankees because of the fact that it's the Yankees and people are excited about opening day. They went to the World Series last year. You get a chance to see Judge.
Michael Kay
But you're really feeling that, though, like, I'm not feeling it.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not the same as the Mets because the Met fan is excited because it's not that often you're excited that your team's that good. They got one of the biggest stars in the sport donning a Met jersey.
Michael Kay
After exceeding all expectations last year.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. And then, you know, and a lot of Met fans are excited that Alonzo's back. So there's a feel of newness to the Mets. So you got. You put your chest out. I don't know if Yankee fans are excited to see Goldschmidt and Bellinger. They're not to the ranks of Soto. So some of them are licking their wounds that they lost one of the best players in the sport and the injuries that they suffered, but it's still the Yankees and I still think it's baseball.
Michael Kay
And Max Freed is excited. That's nice player to add.
Peter Rosenberg
Absolutely. So they went out and got a stud. It was great in the world series in 21. So I hear there might be a little bit more buzz and anticipation around the Mets because of Soto, but I'm still, at least in my world, and I run different circles than you do. I probably hang with more baseball fans, but just being in the city today, walking around, I got a vibe that nobody needed to tell me that it was opening day. And it wasn't just all Mets. It was, I think, a lot of Yankees. The Yankees are home today, so there's that kind of thing.
Michael Kay
I've been getting an overall excitement about baseball, for sure. Like, people have been mentioning it to me as well. I just mean in terms of the teams. And you know what? It's beautiful because we have phone lines. 1-800-919-3776. Maybe I'm dead wrong. My feeling is the Mets base is much more excited than the Yankee base right now. Yankee fans prove me wrong. But to me, I came away this morning, and I don't know if you saw it yet. Did you watch the Lindora commercial? New Balance commercial? So during the. During our next break, I'm gonna show it to you.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Michael Kay
And the New Balance commercial with Lindor is basically, it starts out as him saying dear Queens, and it's about being welcomed to being the Mets, to being a Met. But specifically, it's about Queens, and it's about the people, and it's him walking around Queens, talking to people, going to a bodega, watching kids play baseball in the winter, in snow in New York. And I'll tell you what, at least from a branding standpoint, and maybe it's all just branding. Although, Don, I have a feeling it's not like I'm buying it. I feel like the commercial in a weird way answered my question to how he rose yesterday. I asked, Howie, Soto's the better player, sure. But Lindor has been the guy here, and he stepped up last year, just when people were finally, like, down on Lynn Dore, like, is he going to be the guy we need him to be this year? He ended up being all that and more. He's been fantastic for this team. He's signed to be here for a very long time. So I asked, like, whose team essentially, is it? From a branding standpoint at least, Lindora clearly wants the narrative to be, it's my team. I'll show you the commercial. Creatively, it is a, I'm here. I'm going to be your Met. And we all love Soto. He's a great player. We Also know, guys, he's the definition of a hired gun. That's who Juan Soto is now. Maybe he'll be here for a very long time.
Peter Rosenberg
15 years at least. The contract. Yeah.
Michael Kay
So maybe they become the Bash Brothers together and he's here forever. I don't know. But I do think if you're a Mets fan and you've watched the Lindor commercial, it's gonna put a warm feeling in your heart that he doesn't just want to, you know, show up here and make a lot of money. He loves the culture of this thing. And I thought that's a pretty exciting, fun thing to see. Whether it's a commercial or not. When you see how it's done, it's pretty cool.
Peter Rosenberg
See what I take and I hear everything that that message is sending, but I look at it as. Listen, he's a really good player who came into his own last year. Remember before last year, was they overpaid for him? He's not living up to expectations. And then here we are. Not only did he have a great second half of the season, especially when they put him in leadoff, but he had big moments in the postseason too. I mean, that. That grand slam home run against the Phillies was epic. And not. Not as epic as the Alonzo home run because, you know, it was earlier in the game and it was. It was. Weren't facing elimination like they were against the Brewers. But he had his moment. Yankee fans will tell you it takes a long time sometimes for a player to come over and have his moment. Lindor had his moment, and I think both could be true. I think this can be his team with Soto on it. Now that can change because Soto can go out there and hit.350 and 40 home runs, 130 RBIs. Lindor have an off year and that Mantle could change. But by the way, now there is.
Michael Kay
Still incumbent, but there is still a world. Tell me what you think of this. If Soto bats 350 and hits 45 home runs. Right? There's still a world to me, even in an off year where it can be Lindor's team, depending on how he carries himself and just what the team camaraderie is like. It's not all about. Listen, I know the guy who Mashes is the guy.
Peter Rosenberg
No, you're right.
Michael Kay
But there is a different thing sometimes to leadership. It's not always just that.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not apples to apples because Curry was drafted by Golden State, but clearly kd, when he was in Golden State, was a better player. Than Curry, of course. But it was still Curry's team, correct?
Michael Kay
That could be the case. It's not a bad way of putting it.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. I mean, listen, Judge, I think was better than Soto, but, you know, Soto Younger came in. It was still Judge's team. I mean, Lindor is the incumbent. He was in a lot of ways the face of that run last year. He became the leader. Both could be true, but what you get excited about, it's not just, ooh, we got Juan Soto, we got Lindor coming back, we got Alonzo coming back, we got Diaz when he's on one of the best closers in the sport. I mean, there's a lot, A lot to be excited about with the Mets, but I still think there's. Even though I'm with you, I think the Yankees might struggle a bit. Listen, Stanton being out is not nothing. I know in the regular season he's had his injuries and stuff, but, you know, let's start getting used to a Yankee fans. You know, Stan's not going to be here forever. And you're starting to see the signs that maybe this is the beginning of the end, where maybe he's not going to be somebody that's going to bail you out in the postseason like he has in years past, I guess. Will Goldschmidt stay healthy? Will Bellinger rake, Will Volpe take the next step? What's going to happen at third base? Is Austin Wells, the leadoff going to work? How are they going to survive without Cole all year? How are they going to survive the first three months without heel? Like, there's a lot of question marks around the team, but the American League is not great. Boston and Baltimore have to prove to me that they're ready to take over the east, which I'm not sure. And outside of Texas, who you have to respect because they won the World series in 23, who else scares you in the American League? I think the Mets are a better team than the Yankees. I do. But unfortunately for the Mets, they're in the National League and they've got two teams in their division that might be better than they are. So they might not even win their division. The Yankees, if you were to rank teams in Major League Baseball, might be behind the Mets, but the Yankees are going to have a much easier time going to the World Series than the Mets because of the American League. So doesn't that balance it out to you? Yeah, they lost Soto. Yeah, they've got injuries, but that American League is going to make it a lot easier. I think for them to navigate through than it's going to be for the Mets.
Michael Kay
I guess I find it frustrating though, when you can learn all these things in an off season, all the things that the Yankees don't have, and in the end it's still Yankees win al, Yankees win. World Series is still the pick. What are we even talking about then?
Peter Rosenberg
It is odd.
Michael Kay
Like what? Nothing mattered that's happened the last month.
Peter Rosenberg
Can you explain to me, Vegas, I'm not a gambler, okay? I mean, I partake, but I am. I'm not a gambler. And I'm not saying you are, but you're. You're much smarter than. Than I am. That's been proven on this show time and time again. They lose Cole, they lose heel to start the season. Stanton hurt odds didn't change at all for the Yankees. So is that just trying to suck the fan base into betting on the Yankees? Is that it? Or is it just, hey, this American League stinks. You're going to have to really do a lot more damage to the Yankees for them to think that they're not going.
Michael Kay
I mean, they've got the second.
Peter Rosenberg
They got what, the second or third best odds to go to the World Series. And they just lost. They just, they just lost two future hall of Famers and Stanton and Cole and Soto out the door. Like, how is it not your odds at all?
Michael Kay
So here's. I can justify the Stanton thing because you're used to him not being great in the regular season, okay? And when he shows up in September and October, he mashes the Cole thing and is very odd to me. The heel thing, to be down two starters, including your ace and have that not impact. And by the way, it's not like Cole's coming back.
Peter Rosenberg
Not coming back.
Michael Kay
He's gone for the postseason. So wait, it doesn't even matter to not have Cole in the post season?
Peter Rosenberg
All right, so this, this is post Cole's injury, all right? Meaning this didn't happen before Cole's injury. Dodgers plus 240. Braves plus 850. Yankees plus 900 third best odds to win. To win the World Series and the best odds to go in the American League.
Michael Kay
Okay?
Peter Rosenberg
So they are still the favorites to go to the World Series according to Vegas in the American League after everything.
Michael Kay
After makes no difference. But I wonder, you have to also factor, in addition to whatever it says about the way they view this Yankees team, that obviously Vegas views the Yankees, is that regardless of what happens, they will put it together. It's kind of like respect for Cashman and Boone to some extent, by the way, they will be there regardless. I think it also says something about the betting public. Don, come on, you go to Vegas on a given day and there are people sitting around betting baseball, Don, at any sports book in Vegas, what percentage of them are betting Yankees? They're the Yankees, man. People still put money on the Yankees.
Peter Rosenberg
It's just that's part of it too. And that's why that if you devalue their odds and people start to start hammering that like let's say you made them, I think The Mets are plus 1000 and so they're right up there too. But if you all said, well let's make the Yankees plus 1500, we think they're really, Yankee fans are going to bet that. And then because of the money and because of they're still a really good team and the American League's wide open. But still they are still very much in the conversation. I would worry about the Red Sox. Red Sox fine tune that rotation. Although they're going through injuries, Baltimore's won like what, a combined 192 games over the last two years. So they're certainly a team that contend with. But at the end of the day I still think the Yankees are going to find a way to be able to get there. But I would be a little concerned that it may not necessarily be winning the division and they may not be the best team in the American League when it's all said and done.
Michael Kay
Game time brought to you by Tullamore Dyer Swisky because when it's game time, it's Tully time. It's, it's opening day. As you know, Mets astros coverage on 880 starts at 3:30. Peter Rosenberg
So we're in these new digs and it's really cool, the studio, and we're getting to meet a lot of people, and there's life here. We haven't had life in a studio since pre Covid.
Michael Kay
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And even then, it wasn't to the extent this is. They've got a little office pool going. $2. Who's going to hit the first Yankee home run?
Michael Kay
Oh, that's fun.
Peter Rosenberg
I was the fifth person that was asked. Four Yankees were already gone. Aaron Judge was still available, so I took him. Who? What? Are you overthinking it? We're five deep and Judge is still available.
Michael Kay
Wait, wait. Come on.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm being serious. I went over the table. Like, who was ahead of me? Do you want to go? I think Austin Wells.
Michael Kay
No, no. What? What people chose ahead of you?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know all the people.
Michael Kay
I don't even care who the players are. I want to know the human beings who didn't pick Judge.
Peter Rosenberg
I think they're overthinking it, aren't they? Oh, I'm gonna be cute, man.
Michael Kay
That's. Yeah. Come. Come show yourself right now. It's like the people who aren't willing to vote, who didn't. Whoever didn't vote for Jeter, first ballot, hall of Fame. Come show yourself.
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, listen, I'm not used to this because even back in the old place, we were a rumor to the rest of the staff when we were on air, but they can hear me right now.
Michael Kay
Wait. Austin Wells. It's over. Austin Wells. Is that you? Anthony? You got us someone, dude.
Don LaGreca
All right.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, there you go.
Michael Kay
That is hilarious.
Peter Rosenberg
I just wasted $2.
Michael Kay
That is hilarious. Austin Wells goes yard for the Yankees.
Peter Rosenberg
First Yankee ever. First Yankee ever to be a catcher. And lead off. And he leads off with a home run. How about that?
Michael Kay
Wow.
Peter Rosenberg
So that was a fun. I was going to invite these people to come and grab a mic and explain why they. But somebody had Austin Wells and someone had Wells. How about this? How about this for karma? You ready?
Michael Kay
Go ahead.
Peter Rosenberg
Are you ready for the karma?
Michael Kay
I'm ready, sure.
Peter Rosenberg
Austin Wells leads off the 2025 season with a home run. His number is 28. What number World Series are the Yankees trying to win this year? Oh, the odds just went up. Odds? Watch Judge going to hell. I'm running. I'm going to be like, man, I missed out. Check this out on FanDuel. So FanDuel has the Dodgers at plus 240 to win it all.
Michael Kay
I love FanDuel.
Peter Rosenberg
Braves plus 850. So second place is plus 850. Yankees are plus nine. Hundred. Phillies plus 1000. Mets plus 1100. Orioles plus 1600. So you go from the Yankees plus 900 to win the World Series. The next American league team is plus 1600. So the Yankees are by far the favorites to win the American League by far.
Michael Kay
I mean, the Orioles are used to being disrespected by anything related to the Yankees, but damn, the odds are twice as high. Should we grab a phone call?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't see why would. You wouldn't.
Michael Kay
Let's. Let's talk. Let's get. Let's get Corin going. Hey, Corin.
Don LaGreca
Hey, what's up, guys?
Michael Kay
How are you?
Don LaGreca
Happy opening day.
Michael Kay
You, too.
Don LaGreca
I'm good. How are you guys?
Michael Kay
Good.
Peter Rosenberg
Good.
Don LaGreca
There's a few quick things I want to say. First of all, Peter, how can you not be excited about opening day across the league when every stadium has bunting?
Michael Kay
Wait, wait, say it again.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not happening unless there's bunting.
Don LaGreca
They're like, you know, the banners, they hang up around the red, white and blue. The bunting.
Michael Kay
Oh, if that's true. That is true. I mean, that's something. I haven't seen the bunting yet. I haven't been corum that.
Peter Rosenberg
That might be a New York thing. Was that not a Maryland thing?
Michael Kay
What?
Peter Rosenberg
Bunting.
Michael Kay
The phrase.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Michael Kay
No idea what it was when she said it, but I pretended.
Peter Rosenberg
You know what it is now, though, right?
Michael Kay
Yes, now. Now I'm sure it looks like essentially. It looks essentially kind of like the Yankee logo in a weird way, but hanging out.
Peter Rosenberg
It's like an American flag.
Michael Kay
It's like a reverse American flag. The blue's slightly different, though.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know. It's a lighter blue that I've ever talked about. Bunting.
Michael Kay
So bunting is that. We know what you're saying, though. All right, Cora, what are your thoughts? What are your predictions for.
Don LaGreca
Remember a show last year when you guys were all talking about the bunting and making fun of it? But another thing I want to say, so I think the biggest thing for the Yankees to succeed, they're going to have to rack up a lot of wizard division, because that's clearly the strongest in the American League. You could do well against all the. Against, you know, the AL Central, the AL West. But if you're losing a lot of games in your division, that's going to make it a little more tough. And lastly, dark horse pick for NL Cy Young. Very bullish on Clay Holmes this year. He's someone to watch.
Peter Rosenberg
While Clay Holmes has developed a couple of new pitches. What she thinks that Clay Holmes can win the National League Cy Young.
Michael Kay
Am I, am I like. Am I, do I take crazy pills? We're going to go from Clay Holmes being what he was last year to wins the Cy Young in.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, she did say it's a dark horse.
Michael Kay
It's very dark.
Peter Rosenberg
Can't see it.
Michael Kay
It's. It's purple. It's very, very dark.
Peter Rosenberg
I like what you did.
Michael Kay

Woman in the Yard don't let her.
Peter Rosenberg
In where does she come from? What does she want? When will she leave?
Michael Kay
Today's the day.
Peter Rosenberg
The Woman in the Yard only in theaters March 28th. You don't wake up dreaming of McDonald's fries.
Michael Kay
You wake up dreaming of McDonald's hash browns. McDonald's breakfast comes first. Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. I didn't listen to anything you just said. Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. I guess the song's over.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, it should be over anyway. I don't have these things.
Michael Kay
Carry over was.
Peter Rosenberg
That was last year. This is a different year, man. But he's all. Iglesias is no longer with us.
Michael Kay
That's right.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, at least with the Mets. I should phrase that differently. I'm sorry.
Michael Kay
Now let me ask this question. Are you telling me a team song has never lasted beyond the year, though? Like when it's one of those kind of songs, not like a official song, but when it's like a thing like that, does it never carry on?
Peter Rosenberg
Now when. When there is something, whether it's a song or something that a team kind of rallies around. What was Anthony was. Didn't the Yankees have like a turtle a couple of years ago that was like in the room and they said you do that.
Michael Kay
Oh, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And then. And then it goes away. It should go away, right? Come up with something different. Different year. You turn the page, man. It's a brand new year. Different players, I guess you're. And also the player that. That got it going. And really how often do you not got it going and it's informed by the guy that made the song is no longer on the team. That would be silly.
Michael Kay
It's nice for him though, because like, depending on what happens with his career and obviously he's sort of a. Sort of a fledgling player. If he doesn't have a great career, he'll probably get the opportunity to make some money coming back for the Mets at random events to perform his song.
Peter Rosenberg
I think he makes some money doing that for a career.
Michael Kay
It was pretty good song.
Peter Rosenberg
That wasn't bad, right? I mean, it was. It's not my cup of tea as far as that genre of music, but it was catchy. Looked like he knew what he was doing.
Michael Kay
I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it. Oh, you are now listening to us exclusively on 10:50am or the ESPN New York app.
Peter Rosenberg
And we need to explain this to people and like drum it into their heads. During the spring, the Mets would be on our air and we would be off. We wouldn't be on 1050. We wouldn't be on the app. If you go to the app, you'd get the network. You go to 1050, you'd get the network. But starting today and moving forward, we are going to be. If we're not on 880 because of the MADs, we will be on 1050 and the app. So should just download the app and listen through that so you don't have.
Michael Kay
To worry about the 10:50 signal is.
Peter Rosenberg
A little, little iffy and, you know, respect. You'll always be able to get it. No matter where you are. You can travel with it. So get in the habit of just always knowing that we are going to be there. We were not during the spring because we were just toying with a few things. But now that we're in the new studio, it's all got sorted out. So that goes for Michael and any other, you know, show before 7:00 is that you're going to be able to listen to us on the app. So have fun.
Michael Kay
It's a beautiful thing that we've done. Let's go to, let's go to the phone lines. 1-800-919-3776. We're talking start of the baseball season. I don't even know how Don feels about this, but I'm sorry. At some point after 4:00, we got to get into the Stephen A. LeBron thing a bit because this is now going away. It's not going away. We can argue. It's ridiculous. People, whatever angle you have, we need to talk about it. And we have a lot of Stephen A. Audio to play. I haven't heard it yet, so whether people are interested or not, Don, I need to hear what was said. I'm very curious to hear how Stephen A. Responded today. So we'll do that. Also, guys, not sure if you're aware. Sweet 16 tonight. Hello. I love a little opening day plus Sweet 16 action. And my Maryland Terrapins have a big game tonight against Florida that I'm incredibly geared up about. Let's go to Nick in New Jersey who wants to tell me how wrong I am about something.
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, Nick.
Don LaGreca
Hey. So, Peter and Don, I've been listening to you guys for a long time. Don spent a whole career, excellent sports knowledge and Peter has really shown that he's not just comedy relief or the sidekick that, you know. You have really solid points as well.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you.
Don LaGreca
Can't be wrong on your take this morning because it's your take and it's how you feel. But you have never been more wrong. When you thought Don was going to be in lockstep, when you like geared it up like Don, like a gentleman.
Michael Kay
Fair enough.
Don LaGreca
Gentlemen was nice about it. Because I'm like this. Oh, this man. Cause Don should have been like, you're an idiot. I love baseball. I live. We all know that he does.
Michael Kay
No, but Nick, listen, you're right. You're right and you're wrong, okay?
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, interesting.
Michael Kay
You're right because I completely got it. Got it wrong by even suggesting Don might agree with me. So, Nick, you're 100% correct. Here's how you're wrong, though. Don's a fraud. Don's a fraud.
Peter Rosenberg
What do you mean I'm a fraud?
Michael Kay
I don't think you're really that excited. I think you're like, I'm as excited.
Peter Rosenberg
As a 57 year old with twins can be. I mean, as you start to get older.
Michael Kay
I don't even know if I'd say that.
Peter Rosenberg
Like, I'm envious of the guys, the younger guys out there that are going to the games, they're fired up, they can't sleep the night before. It's like life gets in the way. No, but hear me out. I'm knee deep in Rangers, but that's what I'm saying. Just got a quarterback. Like, I love baseball, but there's a lot of other things going on. I'll be excited, I'll be engaged at 4:00.
Michael Kay
But hear what I'm saying. You're not admitting that you're a fraud. You're fighting it. And I respect it. And the old you, the old Don appreciates that. But the truth is, whatever feelings that you're going to have about baseball on a Saturday in July when the kids are home and you guys are outside, you're playing wiffle ball, the game's on in the background, you're making hot dogs. You do not have that feeling today on March 27th. You just don't. You don't have that.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, let's see what the Mets are doing because that might be a big game that might be playing well. I might completely be disengaged because they're 20 games under.500 and I'll be disgusted.
Michael Kay
That's on the table too.
Peter Rosenberg
But you had mentioned about you're not feeling like it almost you got a sense like that maybe this was not as big a deal that you weren't feeling the excitement. I personally from the Yankee fans.
Michael Kay
Well, two things. One, no, I do not feel Yankee fans are that excited. And even though Michael got on the air during the Michael K Show, which you can hear before us every day, 1 to 3 got on the air and basically said, what if you know what happened this offseason, Al done. They're going to the World Series. I hear you, Caster. I don't think the gen pop is feeling that way in New York right now. I don't think people are going, we're going to the World Series this year. And maybe it's just. Maybe that's part of the problem though. Don, is it possible that the same reason I don't get the sense of excitement for the Yankee fans is the fact that even when they have major, major issues with their personnel, it's still just they should make the World Series. Like what even matters with this team then? So they just go to the World Series.
Peter Rosenberg
But isn't that kind of the expectation?
Michael Kay
I guess so. It all goes together though, because I sense way more excitement for Mets fans. And it's not like the Mets fans had no issues this off season. Things aren't perfect, but you certainly expect that they're going to compete, right?
Peter Rosenberg
But I do think there it's a different excitement. I think there's apprehension, but I think with the opening day comes excitement. I didn't realize this because we're on the air when it happened, but according to the gun show, our guy that Joe Buck said, see you.
Michael Kay
Another home run for the New York Yankees.
Peter Rosenberg
Joe Buck said, see you with a tip of the cap to Michael K. Who isn't making the call this year for opening day because the Yankees don't have the game first time that their nationally televised game doesn't have at least a piggyback with yes involved. So Joe Buck, who's friends with Michael, made sure he said, see ya on the Austin Wells home run as a tip of the cap to our guy.
Michael Kay
K. Well, two things. One, Volpe goes yard in the second inning. Two, nothing.
Peter Rosenberg
Everybody's going to home or butt judge.
Michael Kay
That's apparently so. That was a meatball served up. Smash ola for the kid. Can we get at some point the Joe Buck audio? We're illegally allowed to play that we have.
Peter Rosenberg
It's on our air.
Michael Kay
It's espn. No, it's espn. Come on.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I just saw a little shake of the hand. Like, let me check. I don't know. Last I checked, I see a little Mickey Mouse at Disney on my check. I just went to the Disney offices today, got a brand new id Because I wanted to go to the State of the Art cafe to have lunch today.
Michael Kay
Look at the picture on.
Peter Rosenberg
I got it. Isn't it beauty? You could see it now. The other one was all smudged. This old picture.
Michael Kay
See this picture, Jake?
Peter Rosenberg
I am a Disney employee.
Michael Kay
I know.
Peter Rosenberg
And so is Joe Buck. So you're telling me, fellow Disney employee to fellow Disney employee. I can't play his audio? I'll walk out if we can't. Because then that's telling me that one of us is not real. One of us are not members of the club. And I've been a member of the.
Michael Kay
Club going on 24 years.
Peter Rosenberg
By the way, this is a very important answer.
Michael Kay
No, no, no. I just want to say something right now. This is telling about Anthony as a person. The level of excitement that he had to pick up his headphones tells me he's right. And we're not allowed to play it.
Don LaGreca
I hope you have everything packed.
Michael Kay
Why are we not allowed to play it?
Don LaGreca
Highlights are embargoed till after the game. And by the way, that's not just our boss, you know, the boss boss is here. Justin Craig from the Tippy top.
Peter Rosenberg
What are they gonna do?
Don LaGreca
What are they gonna do?
Peter Rosenberg
No. Would they escort me out? No. What would the article. What would the Raceman article be? Former Don legreca fired from ESPN for promoting espn.
Don LaGreca
Former Michael K. Co host.
Peter Rosenberg
How would that age, Peter? How do you think that age? Don LaGreca trying to forward ESPN TV promotion let go for such act.
Michael Kay
Now, here's the real question. If that were to happen, that you were fired because you insisted on playing ESPN Audio on espn, you were fired. My only question is, and this is a deep. What I'm about to ask you guys is like a deep metaphorical question, philosophical. How does Mushnick handle this? Because his number one obsession is about Disney promoting Disney. Now you're fired for promoting Disney. What is. What's Mushnick's angle on that?
Peter Rosenberg
I think I'd be a hero.
Michael Kay
So is that what it would be?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Because whenever somebody loses their job for the better good, that's what. That's what Mushnik is hoping for. Does Justin realize that this is not the Joe Buck from Fox?
Michael Kay
This is our Joe Buck. That's right. Now, real quick, if Don were to be fired for promoting ESPN on espn, Anthony, where is the room in the article for Doug Adler this weekend? Because he has to write about Don now. Two columns.
Don LaGreca
Two columns.
Michael Kay
You got to write two. What happened to Doug Adler? What happened to Don? Lagreca. He'd be a hero to Mushnik. Well, we'll never know.
Peter Rosenberg
We'll know because they won't believe me. If I had the ability to play the audio now, I would. Just to see what would happen.
Michael Kay
Let's go to Javi in Queens. What up, man?
Peter Rosenberg
What up, baby?
Don LaGreca
Going on, guys. Thanks for taking my call. Before I get into my unhappy opening day. Of course.
Michael Kay
Oh, yeah.
Don LaGreca
Before I get into my. Before I get my baseball. Peter, I just need to report something to you from the morning show. I wanted to turn. Turn back the clock to when we had the list of the COVID songs and somebody called in about Post Malone's cover of Only Want to be with you by hooting the Blowfish and you rightfully almost threw up, like, immediately hearing that this song existed.
Michael Kay
Thank you.
Don LaGreca
They play. They played that song as an opener for one of the segments of the morning show. So, like, I think Ray picks the music. You may have to have a conversation with him.
Michael Kay
But he chose that for no reason. Like, was. What was the.
Don LaGreca
It wasn't a mistake. I don't know. It was just a play in song. But it hurt my feelings that they would play such terrible music.
Michael Kay
A Post Malone cover of Hootie and the Blowfish is special, Anthony.
Peter Rosenberg
That's almost like ESPN promoting espn. Right?
Don LaGreca
Thinking that Ray heard it on this show implies that Ray's awake at this time. I think this is where Ray Banks is sleep.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a really, really no reflection on our ability to entertain it just his hours are sick.
Don LaGreca
No.
Peter Rosenberg
You think Peter's hours are set. Forget.
Don LaGreca
I know the songs are always going to be on point. That's never in. You know, I always know I'm going to get the good stuff here. But listen, with the Yanks, I don't feel great about the season. I think they can make the playoffs. I'm watching nothing. You know, baseball started cheap home runs. You know, it's a good day. But I just want to recognize that this is John Sterling's first time not calling an opening day in a long time. And I just want to wish Dave Sims well on. On his first calls this year. And I hope John's having a nice retirement.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I listen. He's going to be missed, there's no question. But I think Dave Sims is going to. Is going to do it. He's always done well in everything that he's done. But, yeah, it's a little odd. It was odd not hearing him do any games. The guy never missed innings, Peter. Never mind games. So it is a different era of Yankee baseball on the radio for sure.
Michael Kay
Let's go to the Griftster in Connecticut. Hey, Griffin.
Don LaGreca
Hey, guys. Before I get to my point, Peter, what's your plans tonight?
Michael Kay
Any.
Don LaGreca
You gonna order any wings or something? Because you know what? You guys can make the Elite 8 for the first time since 2002.
Michael Kay
Now, Griffin, listen, it's a great, great question by you. I'm excited that you asked the question. So the reason I was off a couple of days ago is because our night nurse, who is going to help me while Natalie is traveling, is sick.
Don LaGreca
Yep.
Michael Kay
And she's still sick, so. So tonight, my parents come to town, which I'm super helpful for. I love you, Mike and Mindy, thank you for coming, but it's their first night. It's the first night of just me and my parents. I can't just hand them the baby and go watch the game. So I canceled. So I canceled my plans. I had plans with my friends Jeff and Carly. Jeff went to Maryland. Carly went to Florida. The three of us, Don, we're going to maybe go to Blondies like gentlemen and women and take in the game. But I canceled with them because the truth is, I'm going to be half feeding Maya and doing stuff during this game, which means. Which means, Griffin, the Terps have to win. So Saturday, I'm able to, like, by then, my parents will be settled in, and I think I can hand them the baby and really focus. But tonight, it's going to be a mixed bag. But you know what? I will order wings for you, Peter.
Don LaGreca
For you. We hope they went for you.
Michael Kay
I appreciate it.
Don LaGreca
I have a question.
Michael Kay
Go ahead.
Don LaGreca
I saw a video on YouTube of this high school coach that pulled the this girl's pony ponytail after they lost a close championship game and then yelled at her in the face. I'm wondering if he really pulled it. I'm wondering, you two have daughters. What goes through your mind if that was your daughter that got yanked?
Michael Kay
I gotta see this.
Peter Rosenberg
I'd be yanking him out of a job. I could tell you that. Listen, and we just heard he was fired, and rightly so. But if Jalen was playing any sport and the coach yelling at her, that's. It really depends on the situation and the coach and all that. And the youth level of the. How old was this child? I don't know. But the pulling of the pony. Anything physical, Peter, just cannot be tolerated at all. In any level.
Michael Kay
Well. Oh, my God, he looks like an old curmudgeon lunatic. I mean, what did you.
Peter Rosenberg
Where'd you find?
Michael Kay
Right here. Take a look. He looks like. Imagine if Jerry Tarkanian came back from the dead and started coaching high school. Here you go. Now, listen, I don't think he.
Peter Rosenberg
The way Griff described. I don't think he yanked the ponytail that hard. I think he was just trying to get her attention. But still, you can't do that.
Michael Kay
It's completely inappropriate. But again, by the way, you couldn't do that. You really shouldn't be doing that with boys players if you're a male coach at this point, that's.
Peter Rosenberg
No, but it would be the equivalent of grabbing a guy by the shoulder of the face mask and pulling it. I don't think she was in any kind of pain. It wasn't, but it freaked her out. But it's still not something you do. You just don't do it. So I'm not gonna sit there and grade the level of the yanking of the ponytail. The way Griff described it, though, I think was a little exaggerated.
Michael Kay
No, I mean, it's a full grab, though. That's what I assumed it was. I didn't think he dragged her to the floor. But you can't grab. Get someone's attention by.
Peter Rosenberg
No, you can't. I'm not defending the act.
Michael Kay
And you could see the girl sort of recoil and when her teammate kind of like was hit, he screamed at the other guys. I got news for you. Bob Knight is dead.
Peter Rosenberg
Woody Hayes, same thing. Remember Woody Hayes, coach of Ohio State?
Michael Kay
Yeah, exactly.
Peter Rosenberg
Clemson. Interception punches. No, those days, even then, even when that happened, what was it, 1981? It was egregious and wrong. Now listen, if that's. If that's the way you coach, then you know. Coach. You don't coach.

Did you just say.
Michael Kay
Yeah, it happened. We were just talking about him during the break. It happened. How do you feel?
Peter Rosenberg
There'll be more on that.
Michael Kay
Well, Don. Wow. I said that and Don's microphone literally just went limp.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I don't. I don't. Was. Was. Rick, for some reason, likes the microphone, I guess low. So you see how yours is turned up and mine for some reason is turned out, and it just won't stay. It's just. It's. Listen, this is first world problems. We'll get through it.
Michael Kay
No, no, I found it annoying. I find. When I'm in that seat over there, I find it annoying, too. This is the best Mike situation is the main seat.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, this is much. Oh, this is much better.
Michael Kay
You feeling good now?
Peter Rosenberg
Animals.
Michael Kay
Oh, and by the way, he's former athletes. I'll tell you, Ballard. Ballard came through with an important text. He's absolutely right. He said, you got to eat Lido's pizza tonight. I gotta. I gotta. I gotta order Lidos. I'm gonna. I'm gonna do the. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, you don't get that reference. Lido, Boss Gags.
Michael Kay
I. Oh, Lito. I do know that.
Peter Rosenberg
I do that in their advertisements.
Michael Kay
I do know that. There's a song called Lido by Boss Gags.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, he'll play it. Jacob will play it. I don't know if he'll bump into the 4 o'clock hour with it, but if he'd be aggressive, if he had any ability. We hear it within the Next minute.
Michael Kay
And a half, four o'clock hour. By the way, we're going to hear from Stephen A. Smith what he had to say about LeBron. We're going to hear from Brian Windhorse, who ended up catching strays from LeBron yesterday. I didn't expect that.
Peter Rosenberg
And apparently it's. It's off. He was. He was wrong that LeBron was wrong. That apparently was off of something that actually was never said by Wendy. I don't think LeBron had the greatest of day. I'll leave it at that. We'll talk about it coming up for. I don't think that was a Great spot by LeBron.
Michael Kay
It was an interesting choice. I'll tell you what, though, he had a great. He had a great moment, though. The tip in for the win last.
Peter Rosenberg
Night, it blew me away.
Michael Kay
His first as a Laker, first winner.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I think. I think the stat was like he was over 18 from the field and like shots taken in the last certain amount of time at the end of game. Like it was something like really. I don't know if Anthony can find it, but some kind of ridiculous stat as a Laker. He had never done that. And that helped the Knicks or hurt them, depending on what you want to have happen.
Michael Kay
That's true. But also interesting that he got one and it was literally a tap in from one inch away. Did you see, by the way, the Joker pass that I sent to the group chat last night?
Peter Rosenberg
It's unreal. I mean, I've never been that enthralled by a pass in a basketball.
Michael Kay
Listen, I know. Let's talk about the group chat for a second. There's Anthony, whose job is to send links, so he sends a lot of them.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Michael Kay
There's Alan, who it's not necessarily his job, but loves to share. Loves, yeah. And just loves to text in general.
Peter Rosenberg
Hell, yeah. And as.
Michael Kay
And as you know, I hate him on text. He's gotten slightly better, but still barely sufferable. And then there's Don and I, who don't really send links to the group chat.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks.
Michael Kay
When I send a highlight link, I promise you it'll always be something you need to see. The pass that Joker threw last night, I can't describe it, except to say when I was a kid, there was an NBA Superstars video that I had on vhs. Okay. Magic was first. His highlights were to the song Control by Janet Jackson. Larry Bird was second. His highlights were to the song Small Town by what's His Face, My man from Indiana, whose name I'm forgetting, John Mellencamp.
Peter Rosenberg
John Mellencamp, my man, my man from Indiana.
Michael Kay
And then boys, John Mellencamp, Red boys, Miller. And then the third song was Michael Jordan. Was Michael Jordan to take my breath away. Don, the reason I'm saying this whole thing is that pass gave me feelings of what the Bird and Magic passes used to give me when I watch that highlight.
Peter Rosenberg
But this seemed.
Michael Kay
It's insane.
Peter Rosenberg
Better though, these. These were.
Michael Kay
No, no, I'll show you some of the magic ones. They were absolute madness.
Peter Rosenberg
All of them, like, in the air like that. Like, I've seen bounce passes that. Like, this was.
Michael Kay
But magic has ones, you know. You know what the best ones are in the magic. He'll grab the ball off a rebound, take one step, baseball pass, one bounce the length of the court. It's stuff like that. This was like magic backwards, forwards. I don't know what he was doing.
Peter Rosenberg
The first angle that you showed, I didn't know how the ball got there, how it got there.
Michael Kay
I know.
Peter Rosenberg
And then you needed the one from behind the opposite end of the court, where then you saw the direction of the pass. But it was almost like, AI. Like magic. Whoa. How did he get the ball into the basket like that? And he wasn't even looking at him. That is such an underrated part of his game.
Michael Kay
If you've been a fan, like all of us are, of Jokic.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah.
Michael Kay
It's the one from behind that shows how it goes by Brook Lopez. The way it goes over Lopez's head is so hilarious for a guy who's had literally an MVP career. I would say, Don, for me, in my opinion, as amazing as Jokic, his career has been, I would call this, like, the defining play in my eyes. Like, this is. This sums up what makes him just an absolute freak.
Peter Rosenberg
You gotta watch, like, a rogue game in March. If that had happened in the playoffs or in a really monster game, it could be the defining moment.
Michael Kay
I'm retweeting it right now if you want to see it.
Peter Rosenberg
Really cool.
Michael Kay
It's fantastic now. We will after 4:00. Don. Yankees are into it up to one right now on Milly Walk A, which.
Peter Rosenberg
Would gonk one for the good land.
Michael Kay
That's right. And we, of course, have the New York Mets in action against the Astros starting a few moments, mere moments. So listen, the hardcore baseball fans, let's be realistic. Most of them are probably watching baseball.
Peter Rosenberg
But the one thing about baseball, and I don't mean this as a dis.
Michael Kay
Go ahead.
Peter Rosenberg
Is that you can multitask during baseball.
Michael Kay
That's a great point.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. You could do your taxes, which I'm sure a lot of people are doing now. Balance your checkbook. Call a radio show. Ideally, why not have the game on? All right, you're not missing Michael Buck does a good job. But listen, you get him all throughout the year anyway, during football and all that. Have the game on. Listen to us call in real time. We'll be talking about it. We're on the game.
Michael Kay
Exactly. We're going to keep you completely locked in.
Peter Rosenberg
You're not gonna get lost. You're not gonna miss anything.
Michael Kay
Brian tweets five seconds into the show. And Peter is an absolute clown. Show. What a bozo. Insufferable. Like, let me just ask a question. If you're out there and you hate me, can you call up and tell me I understand, like not liking certain things about me so far. What's been insufferable? Like what? What was the big crazy take I had?
Peter Rosenberg
Well.

In case you didn't know, these young men are driven. They are prodigies, the savants, the ones we've been waiting for. Like Damien Lillard, for instance. He doesn't seek guidance or mentorship. He's a leader. He isn't waiting for the baton to be passed to him. He's taking it for himself. He's relentless in a pursuit of greatness, always pushing to one up himself. He is accomplished, but far from satisfied. He embodies what it means to have an unstoppable drive and are shaking up the status quo in their community and beyond. And Damian Lillard drives a Toyota. A new generation of Toyota drivers are here and they want you to know one thing. You can't stop my drive.
