B
Todd, this isn't Vietnam. It's Radio Hanh.
A
I mean, he had a handful of twig and berries and Rosenberg.
B
Everything about it was pure, unadulterated ass.
A
This isn't North Dakota. This is New York. This is Don Han and Rosenberg. The best threesome I've ever heard on 8 80, ESPN and the ESPN New York app.
B
Oh, boy, it is a beautiful, beautiful Tuesday.
A
Gorgeous day.
B
19Th in the trih state. Peter Rosenberg, Alan Hahn.
A
You know what it felt like? It felt like last night, walking the dogs last night. Like what about 9,30ish?
B
Oh, yeah. Felt like fall felt like football.
A
Like, you know, my son's going back to school Thursday. And he came out, walked the dogs with me, and he was like, this feels like it's time to go back to school. Like the way. Like the chill in the air, a little crisp. Had a little autumn, you know, flavor this morning. Same thing. Anybody that was up early enough, you felt it. I mean, under 60 degrees in Long Island.
B
It got under 60.
A
Yeah. Yeah. We're at 57 in Huntington this morning.
B
Wow.
A
Yeah.
B
That's a bit too far, but.
A
No, it's perfect.
B
No, it's a bit too nice.
A
And then we got this for August.
B
For August, Alan, that's a bit. I like.
A
Nice little break when. You know what I mean, what we've gone through. Right.
B
Well, but really, have we gone through that much, though? If we're being honest, we barely. Dude, let's not. Let's not fall into recent. We barely got summer. It barely kicked in.
A
Just because you were in France. That mean. Wasn't hot here. Are you crazy?
B
It was just.
A
We. We haven't been on the roof for a meeting since June. It's been that gross. The air is unbreathable. It's been humid, disgusting.
B
But you're the New Yorker, Alan. Welcome to New York. That's called summer in New York.
A
You just said we didn't have a summer.
B
That's not what I'm saying. We did. It was still just short. Let's not act as if we've been like in the thick of it for three months.
A
The guy who was gone for six.
B
Says it was short out of the country for two weeks. Two whole weeks.
A
This did not feel like. This has been a long hot summer.
B
Hold on.
A
And that's great. And we still have two weeks.
B
But this is a really interesting study on the human psyche.
A
Why is that?
B
You guys don't remember the. Okay, when's it actually going to now turn into summer? Okay. It's still 58. I'm still wearing a sweatshirt. We were wearing sweatshirts to work into May have spring.
A
Right.
B
We skipped. We skipped spring. But I'm talking about. It went so far.
A
By the way. We're going to skip fall. Have you heard we could have snow in October. This is going to be.
B
But that's my point.
A
Snowy, cold, winter.
B
If you were going to tell me. If you were going to tell me, Alan, that we could get the yesterday weather and keep it through October, I take that trade right now.
A
I mean, I'll take today's.
B
Take it. Let's go. Yeah, but that's probably not what's gonna happen. And yesterday. Yeah. Was probably really a precursor to us getting winter in October. Although you can't trust anything these days.
A
The Farmers Almanac is pretty. I mean that's. That's pretty reliable at this point.
B
I bet I would be surprised if the Farmers almax out of business. They may have given up.
A
You think they gave up?
B
I think they have no clue what's going on anymore.
A
They've actually been very. It's been very accurate.
B
They'll like they predicted what's been happening the last couple of years.
A
Yeah, it's been very accurate.
B
By the way, how are we doing with regard to this hurricane? It's completely missing us. We're all right.
A
Well, missing it depends on like we're not getting hit as far as landfall, but the beach is going to be riptide. Very dangerous. Yeah.
B
So this weekend people should not plan on going to the beach.
A
Well, go to the beach. I wouldn't swim.
B
No, you can go sit at the beach and cold.
A
You can go. But I don't think swimming is a great idea. Rip currents are a real thing.
B
I mean, listen, that's. That's supposedly what killed Malcolm Jamal Warner.
A
Sad.
B
Absolutely tragic.
A
Thanks for bringing that up.
B
I'm sorry. This is one of the moments of the talking weather.
A
Then all of a sudden, here we go. You just.
B
People need to understand the ocean is undefeated. I do not play around with the ocean.
A
Don't.
B
The ocean ain't to Be played with. It's. That's Water scares me.
A
Yeah. Of all the things, right, like you think about all the different ways to go. Drowning feels like one of the worst.
B
Oh my God.
A
Like clearly the worst.
B
Oh my God. Yeah. I have a. I had a friend who drowned. It happens like this. This really. Anyways, the. That is be. Be safe this weekend.
A
Yes.
B
Because we're not going to see it, but it's going to affect the beaches in a big way. And as much as we say it out loud, Don, there are going to be some people like, oh, waves look crazy. Let's go out there. No, they are saying to stay away this weekend.
A
Is Don here with us? Don? Don. Is Don here?
B
Why'd you say that?
A
I thought you said it. I thought you were addressing Don, so I thought he was here.
B
I didn't just call you Don. I didn't just call you Don.
A
I thought he was gonna make a surprise, like parachute into the show thing that you were bringing them in.
B
I did it again.
A
I was excited.
B
Well, you know what? Since I brought him up, I do want to give a big shout out to the big Mark Sasso softball game Saturday. Again.
A
Thank you.
B
Saturday, August 23rd. Was that a Don, thank you?
A
Yes, it was. Thank you.
B
Yeah, you're welcome.
A
Thanks.
B
It's at Wagara Ball Field, 289 Waggeraw Road, Hawthorne, N.J. or as Michael would say, Hawthorne. Or as you know, Don Lagreca and his many, many, many All Stars at 4:30.
A
He knows a lot of all stars. I walked in, I said, these are a lot of all stars.
B
But it's always a great time.
A
You know, I was an all star.
B
For the annual Mark Sasso softball fundraiser game. So that's going down in Hawthorne this weekend. I just saw a headline here.
A
Okay.
B
Talk about your all time letdowns. And I know, see, this is. This is what I'm. This is what makes me great. I know that no one would have recommended this be the first sports thing I say, but I also know that Allen Hahn is a basketball junkie. So he won't be able to resist.
A
John Wall retiring, which I didn't know he wasn't.
B
But where does that rank though, among the all time for ceiling talent? Wise to where it landed. Disappointments. He had such a moment where you thought this guy could be super duper star.
A
He was one of the fastest players basketball with the ball you've ever seen, ever. Just. He was a blur. Like, you think about it. There's people who can run 94ft on a basketball court. Fast but with a basketball while being defended. No one.
B
No.
A
I've never seen anybody as fast as him with the ball. That includes Derrick Rose who was very fast, but John Wall was just a different level of fast. Injuries, man. Like that's, that's a, it's, it's another, it's, you know, the sad case of a player who just the body couldn't keep up with the demand. And I don't want to say it means that you should play less and load manager. No, the demand he put on his body for the way he played, that's, that's what happened to him. And then he went, you know, he went through a lot of other stuff too.
B
And then of course, wasted years in Washington. Well, like your career goes to die.
A
This is like you think about Trevor Lawrence, right? Like we talked about him yesterday. I've said this about the draft. It's, you go to a, go to some of these franchises and you have no chance. And that I hate seeing that I hate seeing a player. Zion Williams is a great example. He goes somewhere in the minute he's drafted. I'm like, you say to yourself that's not going to work out. Like that's the worst place he could go. Like I'm trying to think of a bad team that a great player at in the college draft went to and transformed the franchise.
B
That's, that's a real. You know what think about, you're making me think about a list.
A
I mean, you want to give me Joe Burrow and the Bengals because did you, I mean you, I know you watched him last night. That defense was Keystone Cops for the kids, by the way. Keystone Cops was like something from like the twenties old timey kind of cartoonish comedy where it's just kind of like, you know, they were bumbling, stumbling, embarrassing, but funny. So yeah, slapstick comedy. That's literally what the Bengals defense looked like. The starters, I mean, and let's not pay Trey Hendrickson, of course, because, you know, why would you need him that they, that defense looks so bad. That team is not good. Their offensive line, he was running for his life. It's unreal. So Joe Burrow. Yes. Did he take the Bengals and take them out of Bungles land and you know, get them to the super bowl early in his career? Yes. But overall though, is that going to being a worse place for him to go, A guy of his talent to be there?
B
Oh man, it's, it's, it's terrible. Now speaking of which, and I know you Want to get to some of the baseball, which is. We got three hours, plenty of three hours to do it. We're up till 6, 6:05 today before we get you to Mets baseball against the Nationals. Now, it has been confirmed that Daniel Jones will be the starter for the year for Indianapolis.
A
And that's the key, key phrase for the season. So the competition's over, right, With Anthony Richardson.
B
So. So, Alan, tell me it. Well, first of all, this could just be an indictment, of course, of the Colts quarterback room, no question. But, man, can you imagine? I normally don't agree like Michael K used to love to focus on, oh my God, it'll look so bad if this person plays well. And sometimes I think he overstates it. But as much as we've talked about all the things that could happen with the Giants and the development of Jackson Dart, that could really make this coaching staff look good. Alan, I'm sorry if for some reason Indy breaks something out of Daniel Jones we haven't seen, that would look horrible for the Giants.
A
It would, but I, I think there's a.
B
You don't think it's happening?
A
There's a very low probability of it. I think what we've seen out of Daniel Jones is the best you'll see out of Daniel Jones. I don't think there's like another gear. I don't think I. It's one of those. We know who he is. There is no getting better from where he. I think he reached his peak two years ago. Like, I think you saw it. Okay, he can be good, but I don't know if he's that next level good because he is one of those players that is flawed. Now, we saw Baker Mayfield, right? And Baker Mayfield is always the. He's the new example of a second chance kind of guy. And Gino, yeah, I remember Gino. It took a couple of years as a backup to get there, though. He had to mature. It wasn't until he was well over 30 before Geno, then suddenly just looked like a guy that understood how to be, you know, a leader in the, in the huddle and to run an offense capably. Daniel Jones has shown you he can run an offense capably. The problem with him is he. He is so turnover prone. Like Baker's problem a lot of times was a. He was small and that worked against him. And also he was too brash. He would do things that you'd say like, you know, it's almost like the irrational confidence kind of thing. With Baker Mayfield, Daniel Jones will like, give you face palm moments. Two plays after he gives you a incredible athletic moment. Like, he just seems to have that. He's just that kind of player. So I don't think. Look, first of all, Anthony Richardson is an Instagram quarterback.
B
Can we just say it with the big arm?
A
Yeah. He threw through 60 yards on his knees, and everybody just salivated. It's like Zach Wilson throwing across his body. The throw. The pro A season before that draft that year, and they all went crazy against zero defense, and he's throwing down the field across his body. Everybody just went, oh, my God, look at this kid's arm.
B
Right.
A
But what about from the neck up? Zach Wilson can't process. Just can't. He can have all the arm talent in the world. Can't process. Anthony Richardson has all the athletic physical ability in the world. Absolute beasts as a quarterback because he's got a big arm and he also can run you over. The problem is another guy can't process.
B
Doesn't seem like it's just a real thing.
A
Browning Nagel. Jets fans know this name. Go back to the 90s. Monster arm. I mean, he could throw it through your chest. Can't process. And also couldn't put touch on the ball. So his receivers were like, dude, just dial it down about 10 miles per hour. So, you know, just drop it in the basket.
B
A butterfly with sore feet.
A
But he just couldn't do that. So I think a lot of times we fall in love with these quarterbacks in pro days and preseason workouts and all that stuff. It's now the Instagram quarterback, the guys that just look the part until it's time to actually process. Which is why, again, I think Shador Sanders is going to be a great NFL quarterback. Because from the neck up, it's all there for Shador.
B
It's all there. I. I do agree with that part. You. You're looking good.
A
Yeah.
B
Your feelings on that have. Are aging early on. They're aging so far.
A
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So far. But it's not there yet.
B
Listen to these numbers, though. For Daniel Jones, if I want to get excited as a Colts fan, no one is excited.
A
The Colts fans are not excited.
B
57 starts, 2135 and 146 touchdowns, 35 interceptions, pass a rating of 83 and a half. He's. He's also lost the ball in the ground 26 times.
A
But wait, wait. So 26 fumbles, lost how many interceptions?
B
35.
A
So think about turnovers to touchdowns. Because you said the touchdowns, he was already minus, what, nine? Just touchdowns up he was up.
B
He was up 45, right?
A
It was 45. So do quick math and tell me what's the. What are you minus when it comes to Turnovers?
B
He's up 11. So now he's minus 15 because he was up 11. But now you add the fumbles, he's minus 15.
A
I mean, damn. Now that's fumbles lost, right? Not just fumbles.
B
No, no, I have the number for. Number for both. It's. Let's lost because. Because putting ground total. Total times is. There's. It's a bigger number. This is lost.
A
See that.
B
That 11, his rookie season, if you remember.
A
Yes. Yeah, that was.
B
And then six. It went down. Now listen, it got much better.
A
Remember, they killed him for his hand size.
B
11, 6, 3, 3, 1, 2. No, Jones didn't get killed for his hand size.
A
I thought he was.
B
No, wasn't him.
A
Who was it that got killed for the hand size?
B
Tiny hands.
A
Oh, Kenny pick. Kenny pick.
B
It's another jabroni.
A
No, no, but what was. Bart used to say something about Daniel Jones at turnover.
B
When I shook his hand, I went, that's a man's. That's a quarterback.
A
Oh, he called him. Did he call him Junior Whopper Hands? Yeah, he would call him Junior Whopper.
B
What the hell? Okay, can you speak Bard Ease and explain?
A
I would just nod. There were some things that Bart would say that you figure I just got to get through the segment. So he would just say Junior Whopper Hands and that the Bart E's meant. He's talking about Daniel Jones like, you understand, like he had a name for everyone, but it wasn't exactly their given name. It was his name for them. So just hearing him say Junior Whopper Hands, I knew who he meant. That's. That's. That's the hands thing that I was, I was referring to. But no, like, this is more an indictment on Anthony Richardson and their inability to. To develop him or his inability to develop the. The game. And he does get hurt a lot too, which goes back to the Stanton question I had. You know what I mean? Like, physically just looks the part, but physically unable to do things without getting hurt. And so I think for Richardson, that's the frustration with, with the Colts. Listen to sty. Here's Shane Steichen, the coach of the Colts. Now he's also up against it. Remember, you know, there's. There's a whole ownership now situation there. So the, the daughter has taken over. So now she's assessing everybody there. So for Shane Steichen, like, this is you know, I. I need to win. I need a capable quarterback. And Daniel Jones came in and proved, as he has with the Giants, that he can run an offense. So Steichen was then asked, like, what went wrong then with Richardson and the development of him into what should have been your future quarterback.
B
Part of that is, you know, we threw him into the fire early as a rookie and had some injuries and, you know, been battling some injuries, and I think that's all part of the development, you know, of his game. I think everyone's journey's different, and for the first time, this is an opportunity for him to sit and learn. You know, he's 23 years old, and if his number gets called at any point in the season, I believe he'll be ready to roll.
A
Okay, so now, as a Giants fan, you are listening and thinking about Daniel Jones. I don't think you're worried about Daniel Jones suddenly taking off and becoming Tom Brady or. Or even Baker Mayfield, and you're sitting there going, what do I got? Because, you know what you got. You got Jackson dart, and you know you love him. But did you hear what Steichen said about what went wrong with Richardson, throwing him in there too early. The urgency that we have in this sport to just throw these young quarterbacks to the wolves and hope it works out, because what would you say is 10% of the time it works. I guarantee you that it's got to be. It's definitely above 75% of the. Of the quarterbacks that are drafted in the first round, that are forced into playing in the first year, end up failing. Has to be. And this would be another situation. So they're realizing he was not ready to run a team, but because he had such physical tools and everybody was excited about him in that preseason. I remember it. I believe, if I'm not mistaken, was Flacco there. There was a veteran there that he ended up beating out.
B
But anyways, in Indy, the first time.
A
In Indy, yes, there was somebody there that I know that, like, he ends up beating out. Everybody was just so excited because he was just. Physically, he was all. He was tough. He couldn't tackle him. And they thought, you know, they got excited about him, but then he got hurt, and you could see that he had trouble processing. And so Steichen said it. It was too soon. So now, if you're a Giants fan, that's why you have to just. You got to hold your horses when it comes to dart. And as everybody is, I just. I listen to the experts. All of our NFL people, especially at espn and all of them have their, their different takes about the situation and what, what the Giants should do with Dart. And there's a lot of Chris, Katie's going to join us at 4 o' clock and CC's been all over this as well. He's obviously got a Super bowl ring on his finger with the Giants, so he's got a lot to say. But this is why yesterday I kept telling everybody that this is perfect for the Giants. And the situation with Daniel Jones in Indianapolis is exactly the cautionary tale that you should be paying attention to. Not to say that Richardson and Dart are the same type of player.
B
Not to say took the job from Minshew, by the way.
A
Okay, it was Minchu, so it was a veteran guy. But this is exactly why the Giants are in such a good spot because they have Russ, a veteran who can just get you, it can, he can get you off the ground, he can get you in the air. And then from there you figure it out, how does the season go and you decide. If you really think Dart continues to progress, he should be QB2 because he needs to get reps in practice. I think for Jameis Winston there's a reality that's going to come here and I think it's a real thing. And you don't force him in just because there's excitement or just because like Mike Tannenbaum, Marcus Spears, others have pushed the idea you got to play him. I think you got to play him. You got to play him, you got to play him. And I know Dan Orlovsky and some others are in that place saying, no, we have Orlovsky.
B
Here's Orlofsky on why you shouldn't start Jackson Darth.
A
Here's my concern when you make the comment he's athletic enough to cover it up. I always say this for the young super talented quarterbacks that are athletic, you actually want to develop a little bit of their game to be less reliant upon that. Because we all get to a point where we say you have to play from the pocket in the NFL to be consistently good long term. And I think what happens with the guys that are athletic that get shoved onto the field right away is while their athletics athleticism gives them a chance to survive a little bit, it never really allows them to like develop a proper way because they're so reliant on it. And so for me, yes, the athleticism matters for Jackson Dart, but if the offensive line is poor, I don't want him thinking, well, I'll just continue to run around and not develop the necessary in pocket stuff that he does have to develop. Just, it's all about patience. And I know everybody's excited. This is perfect for the Giants. And if you're a Giants fan, think about it. I said this yesterday, I'm going to repeat it because it's true. Last year you had nothing demoralized. Saquon was gone. Your franchise let him go to a rival and then he went and had an mvp. He played great last year and they won a Super bowl last year and you had to sit there and watch that. It was a demoralizing year to be a Giants fan. And a lot of fans really got like complete apathetic. And I don't blame you. The apathy was real last year. People weren't even pissed off anymore. It was just like, we suck and that's it. Like apathetic. But you got this guy now and that's a good thing because there's an excitement, anticipation. But I like what the Giants are doing because they are not going to rush it. Russell Wilson showing you he still has some tread on the tire is very, very important because let him again, let him just get the plane off the Runway, get it up in the air and then see where it goes. Jackson Dart, he talked. Let's hear Jackson Dart. Just talking about what the long term plan is for him with the Giants. They've done it with so many other quarterbacks. I trust them in the process. So I'm really just focused on each and every day. How can I get better? I've said this before, when I first got here, like, the amount of knowledge in that quarterback room was, you know, very humbling. So, you know, I'm just trying to, you know, catch up on a lot of information. You know, I want to get on the same level as the guys in my room. So, you know, I'm continuing to try to chase that each and every day and you know, just listen and you know, I have great guys around me, great coaches who have won and done at the highest level. So I just look forward to learning each and every day. Doesn't he just get it? Like, doesn't he get it? He totally gets it.
B
Okay, okay, okay, okay. Settle down, buddy. We can see you're visually excited. Yes. It sounds like he gets it. He gets it early on. It's what it seems like. I like what we're hearing. I like we're here from Shador too. There are some young guys who are winning at the podium, which is very, very Important. He seems to get it. I just want you to calm down.
A
What do you mean?
B
What does it mean? Don't go full Michael K Putting Joe Judge in the hall of Fame because he likes the sound of the cut of his jib.
A
Easy, easy, easy, easy.
B
He sounds good. I like the sound.
A
This is. That's an awful comparison, by the way. Awful comparison. Why putting Joe Judge in the hall of Fame off of a press conference versus what I've seen from Jackson Dart from pre draft to all the way up to this point, even with hype surrounding him, how he just, he gets it, his answers are right and the way the franchise is handling him. You know the one mistake he made, he said, we've seen them do it with others before. They haven't done it since Eli. They haven't developed a quarterback.
B
Yeah, not a lot since. Not a lot.
A
I mean, like the Giants. It's a one problem the Giants have had that they had Eli for forever, so they didn't have to worry about it. But that's how they, they handled Eli Manning in the exact way they need to handle Jackson Dart. It's the exact thing they have to do. And that's what I am excited about from a Giant perspective because this can't be about. But, but he needs to play right away because you need to see him. No, you don't need to see him. You need to put him out there when you know he's ready. This is not throw him in the lake and say swim. That doesn't work in the NFL. A majority of the time it fails the quarterback. And what we learned in Indianapolis, what they admitted there is that's what failed Anthony Richardson and why Daniel Jones is their starter.

Now, of course, I'm guessing you're playing the instrumental here, Jacob, but a lot of conversation about this song, imaginary Players by Jay Z, because Cardi just did a really, what amounts to a cover of it.
A
She did like an updated version of it.
B
I mean, but it's like I would go as far as calling a cover, you know, it's not even like she sampled it. It's she, she did. She took his flow on it. The vibe of it. The beat is a note for note replay. It sounds like, but it's not bad. I enjoy it. I enjoy it. I didn't love it, but I like it. I don't think it's gonna be song of the summer.
A
No, not at all. I mean, it's a 4.0 to a 4.6.
B
See, exactly. Well, hers is a 4.0, his is a 4.6.
A
Exactly.
B
That's what you're saying. Very impressed by you, Jacob, for a youngster. A lot of the youngsters didn't even know the Jay Z version. They thought it was a brand new original.
A
You're not new to Jake, are you?
B
Come on. This is Jake.
A
He's. He's got range. Very impressed with him.
B
1-800-223. Nope. That's hot. 97. 1-800-919-3776. Song of the summer. Football, baseball. It's all on the table now, Alan. We started out with the football and we'll bounce back and forth, by the way. I thought I had some sort of like freakish dream or something because I had a bunch of things going on last night, but I, I had the start of the Commander's game. I watched like the end of Monday night Countdown and then watched the, the first quarter and like, I was like, pretty sure. I watched Jaden Daniels play and score a touchdown. And then I looked up, I was like, let me go see, let me go see the line here. And I go to the box score of the Commander's game and see that he did not complete a pass.
A
Didn't even.
B
He's not.
A
I don't think he threw one.
B
He didn't throw a pass?
A
No.
B
He ran for a touchdown.
A
Did not throw a Pass untouched, by the way. 14 yards. Just a joke.
B
Listen. But. But on the last one, I mean, on the last two defenders who saw him on the way in the end.
A
Zone, they let him go.
B
They let him go. Not gonna hit like that was. Actually, I have to say, I appreciate the respect. You're not. You're not killing someone in the preseason.
A
Well, Washington's. Washington's front line almost tried to kill Joe Burrow. That was unreal. Yeah.
B
You know what? It's a fair point.
A
If you were a Bengals fan watching that, weren't you? Like, oh, my God, get him off the field. Like, there had to have been. Like, why didn't he just go down? Because he's Joe Burrow. He doesn't do that. Like, I'm not. I'm not. I'm not giving up. He was determined. But damn.
B
But doesn't. You alluded to this yesterday. You talked about how if you're a fan of this Bengals team, you know, we can talk all about what they could do with Trey Hendrickson, but it's about the O line, and if they're going to have Joe Burrow running, it's not going to be a team that does.
A
Well, it was definitely scary. Scary moment there. But their defense is not very good. And that's going to be, you know, again, what do we say? There were six. Right. Six. Shortest odds to win a Super Bowl. And. And yet when you looked at that defense, again, just the starters, they weren't in for long. They probably were doing a lot of vanilla stuff. Who knows? But if you heard Troy Aikman, like, you hear the broadcast, you hear what's said after that game by those watching, there was a lot of. The Bengals could be in big trouble if that's their defense this year. So it's, you know, like, anything can happen. But. Yeah, so. So Jaden played foot four, a handful of snaps.
B
Yeah.
A
And they got him out of there, which was smart. I know you heard Dan Quinn say that he wanted to. He wanted to play more. And Dan Quinn's like, now we're all set. Like, no way are we putting you back out there.
B
Yeah, I think we feel good about where this thing is.
A
Do you feel kind? I know you and Ty talked about this, because this is Ty's take, but I didn't get a chance to talk it out with you. Week one home opener, coming off of a year that you dream about using your terminology, and you're hosting a Giants team that the more people talk. You heard what I said about them yesterday. And the more others talk about what they've seen from the Giants, the more people are saying this Giants team is going to be a handful. They might not be a great team. They might not be a team where everybody starts talking playoffs, but they look like a team that after you're done playing them, you're going to feel it. And that in week one is the. That that's the team you don't want to face because they don't know they're bad yet and they're healthy.
B
Yeah.
A
Right.
B
Fair point. Yeah. I mean, assuming. I assume Dexter Lawrence will be good to go and I would say everything should be fine.
A
Right.
B
No, they worry me, especially because you're coming off of such a high with the commander season. They always play the Giants close and bad. So I don't think it's some sort of. They do. I mean, I'm just being honest.
A
And bad is a great way to describe it.
B
Is Right.
A
Arrival.
B
Even. Even when the Giants are. Even when the Giants are bad, the commanders play with them. So I. I don't love it. I don't think it's the hottest in the world. And obviously on the field. Have they. Have they. Have they worked that out of. In the preseason or gets a tough. I don't care. He's supposedly doing the work. He's. He'll be fine. Let's not forget this is a guy who's caught ball from every person who's ever played quarterback in history.
A
Yeah.
B
So he'll be on the same page.
A
Pete, you're struggling, so we're just going to let. We're going to try to get the signal right. In the meantime. But what. Again, what. What you're talking about, obviously is making sure that you get everybody you need to get signed. And he's the most important. Like look around the league. Micah Parsons, Trey Hendrickson and obviously Terry McClaurin. And if you think about it too right. How important Hendrickson for a defense that isn't very good, how important Micah Parsons is for a Cowboys defense that if he's not there, they could be. They could be the worst team in the division. They could be. You'd put so much on Dak Prescott and then obviously McLaren, you finally found your quarterback that everybody believes. Your quarterback of the present and the future and his most important weapon. Now you're like, you're going to start penny pinching there. You're crazy.
B
But they.
A
There was a guy that jumped off the page last night, Mitchell Tinsley. This kid. Now, I know it's preseason and everybody's going to say that stuff. They roll their eyes. But I'm not the only one that said it. The catches this dude was making last night insane. What. And his story's a great story, too. Like, it's. It's such a great story. The fact that he came up with the Bengals and they let him go and he ends up there. But Peter. Yeah. Mitchell Tinsley, what he was doing. I'm sorry. He came up with the, with the commanders and he's on the Bengals now. And you know, they already have, obviously Chase, they have T. Higgins, they paid them both. But if this guy doesn't make the roster, which he's got to make the roster, the catches he would make him, they were insane. If he doesn't all. I kept thinking to myself again, I'm always very. I'm very myopic. I'm very New York centric when I watch the NFL. And the first thing I thought of was both teams in New York. If this guy suddenly is either going to get caught or whatever it is, you better grab this guy. The Giants could certainly use more playmakers, but. But the jets, you have Garrett Wilson and then what. What do you got?
B
So, no, he's. He's good, man. And this had a.
A
He's had a great preseason, but he has been special. That. The way, the way, the way Zach Taylor spoke after the game or at halftime, I think when Lisa talked to him. Or was it. I forget it was Lisa or, or anyways, he made it sound like, oh, yeah, you know, we know we got here. Like he's got to make it. But what a great story that is. That's what I love about preseason. You get those. You get the Victor Cruz kind of stories. And that's what I think Mitchell Tinsley did last night on Monday Night Football.
B
Well, that's really the only thing that makes the preseason worthwhile.
A
Yeah, it's those stories. It's Wayne Crabbette. It's those stories. The guy I mentioned, Victor Cruz, there's always going to be the guy that no one saw.
B
Bart Scott, dude, I don't remember this guy at all.
A
Yeah, he was on your roster last year. Two years ago. Two years ago and got cut.
B
I have no memory of him being.
A
I think he's another. I think. Is he an undrafted? He might be an undrafted, but man, he could. He's. He's got hands. Body control is everything you want. Tough.
B
He played two years at Western Kentucky, then went to Penn State.
A
Yes, at.
B
Now listen, in year two, it went college. I'm going to try. By the way, I haven't made this announcement.
A
Okay. Not going to make it official yet.
B
I don't want to make it official. And Anthony's going to. Either Anthony's either going to get very excited and enjoy following this, or he's not going to believe it and just ignore it.
A
Okay.
B
I'm going to make an attempt to follow college football a little more this year.
A
Whoa, no, no, I'm going to try. I don't know. I'm. You're dubious. I am not buying this at all.
B
You're dubious.
A
No, I am not. You're selling. I'm selling. I'm not. I'm not investing in this whatsoever. I'm out. That's a good job.
B
Wait, why? Why? Why? Why?
A
Because. Because, you know, for some people, like I say this about soccer. For some people, you have so much going on in your life. There's always that one thing that's, like, that'd be cool to get into, and then you try, and then about two, three weeks in, you realize, I can't do it. I can't. And you just know that. I get. This is why I'm not into it.
B
But I have something working for. For me.
A
What do you got? Other than Maryland doesn't really have no bleep Maryland.
B
That doesn't matter. I mean, I. Listen, if they end up, you know, last year, they ended up having a pretty fun year, so they can help draw me in, certainly. But it's that my wife will not let me watch wrestling with the baby. Not yet. She.
A
She's.
B
She's fine with the baby. Like, once we can communicate with her.
A
Once you can explain oil men. Wrestling is like, literally, it's okay.
B
Like if we're. If they're two.
A
If she's two, can explain.
B
But as an infant, she doesn't like the idea of her just taking images of fighting in. I respect.
A
Get it.
B
Football. She won't really know what she's seeing. Right. It's just lots of running going on. So on a Saturday where, you know, Natalie now has things to do and is like, finally, Peter's here all day. Here, take the baby. Saturday, I could get some good quality time, you know, sitting the baby next to me, throwing on a little college foosball.
A
Yeah.
B
And taking in a little bit.
A
So you're not gonna pick a team? You're just gonna watch. No, no, no. What's. What's, like the big games. What are the big games? Right. Every week we have what's the big game? Right.
B
Okay. You want truth or do you want. You want me to fudge the truth or tell the truth?
A
Well, I mean, we're always about just being open books and being honest. Right. Genuine is, to me, the most appealing thing to an audience.
B
If I'm going to continue to make my little appearances on First Take, I can't say I'm out on every college football subject. No, I'm out. Can't do it. Got nothing. I can't. I got to at least say if there's a massive SEC story going on from the weekend before.
A
I got it. By the way, we're in week zero. Yes.
B
Right now? Yeah, it's week zero now.
A
Week zero.
B
Wait, wait. I got to get it now.
A
What you watching Saturday, Peter, what you watching?
B
Oh, my God. Iowa State, Kansas State. Like you dream about.
A
Dublin island, noon on espn. What's better than that?
B
Well, hold on. So that's the first. All right, and then we get a break till Thursday. Boise State, South Florida.
A
Well, I'll give you the game if you want to start the season off. Rock. Oh, yeah, I know where you're going, Alan. You know the game you got to watch.
B
Texas oscm, of course. All right. Out of the gate.
A
Not. Not. It's Fox, but Big Noon Kickoff. Big Noon Kickoff. Wait, so you're watching Portnoy on Big Noon Kickoff.
B
Wait, wait, hold on. By the way, the best part of this is you guys know that's the day before Clash in Paris. So I'll be in Paris. So.
A
So you got a phone, don't you? Yeah.
B
Six o' clock in Paris. My. Hold on real quick. My wife's birthday in Paris. Baby, baby, we'll have dinner later. We got. I got a dial in. We got Texas, we got. We got Big Ten action like you dream about. Well, Big Ten, Big 12. What the hell's going on?
A
Big Ten, SEC.
B
SEC. SEC.
A
SEC.
B
Wait, Texas SEC now SEC.
A
Yeah, you got to catch up even on that.
B
What year do we move to the SEC now?
A
Last year.
B
Okay. I'm not that far behind.
A
UCLA's in the ACC. That's probably the one that I enjoy the most.
B
Can you, Anthony? So at some point today.
A
Yes.
B
As I build towards this college football reawakening, of course. Can you just write down the biggest changes that I'm definitely going to have wrong?
A
Okay. I'd rather. I'd rather we do it this way. We just keep a tally as you go. What conference does this team play like you with Barkley, who he played for? I think that's what we're going to do with you.
B
What conference is this?
A
Where they play. Oh, I like where they play. Like, do it like this. Where they play. Like. Like who he played for where they play. So Texas, where they play.
B
Well, apparently the SEC.
A
That's right.
B
I said Big 12. I thought.
A
Well, you had it two years ago. You were dead on. You were right. Two years ago. Yeah, but I mean, all you need to know about Texas and why you want to watch Texas. This is this one brand name.
B
Vince Young.
A
Yes, Vince Young. No, it's the other brand name. No, even Peter knows this one. I mean, this is. This is the big one.
B
The. We're finally seeing the kid.
A
That's right. Golden Arch, debut game.
B
That's it.
A
Well, he's played debut game.
B
Wait, no. Has he. He started to the Arch.
A
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yours got hurt. He had to fill in for yours last year.
B
Got it.
A
And then he showed. He showed some magic.
B
This is the beginning of the Arch era, right?
A
Yeah. This. This. Right, Exactly.
B
This is must see tv.
A
This is the march for Arch like we're gonna see in the NFL. By. By October. We'll know who's. Who's in play for Arch, by the way. Yeah, I don't know where Archie got that from. I haven't said anything about whether I'm not coming back or coming back to college. I'm keeping everything open because he'll take a massive pay cut. You know, your rookies in the NFL, they don't make really a lot of money. Not compared to what I'm making at Texas.
B
Yeah, but what about good old Eli Brickhandler? I'm just looking at the Ohio State quarterbacks. I don't even know which one's the starter.
A
Don't worry about it. They probably named somebody. But once again, what about Mason Mags?
B
Sure, I feel about him.
A
I don't tell me.
B
And Trey Robinette.
A
Oh.
B
Oh, my God. So, anyways, it's going to be a work in progress.
A
Yeah, we lost track of time.
B
Yeah, we got to take a break.
A
We do.
B
Let me talk to you guys.
A
I think it's saying that's the starter, by the way. Just so you know.

A
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
B
I didn't listen to anything you just said.
A
Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcast. You know, I finally got to consume during the break. Peter, let me.
B
Hold on, let me think. The I'm gonna go with the yacht rock documentary on hbo.
A
Correct.
B
You like how I guess that based on this hint.
A
Well, it's pretty obvious really. I think so.
B
Playing Nate Dog.
A
No. Well, no. The hearing the sample from. But still I keep forgetting which is one of the most famous yacht rock songs ever. I figured you're smart enough to have figured that out because Don had suggested I watch it it and. And I had not had time and I found time. That and the Billy Joel dude.
B
I still haven't finished Billy Joel and I loved the start of it.
A
It's so I give him credit because it's really raw. Like it. It's not glorifying him whatsoever. It just shows you the grind of a life that he went through things I didn't know about him. I have greater respect for him now, honestly.
B
So. But yeah, I'm excited to finish it. Right. We.
A
But you know the great thing about the yacht rock doc is at the end they give like it's a whole segment on how hip hop brought the genre back because there were so many like bluesy, jazzy beats that were made that were sampled into famous songs which. That was a cool part of the documentary.
B
Yeah. It's funny, I. I have such mixed feelings on that Particular record Regulator Regulators is a really fun song. Yeah, it is cheesy to the point of like, ridiculous. I mean, what it's about, of course, the whole Regulators, the singing style is almost like a musical and a mission. Trying to find Mr. War and Jesus.
A
But that's what makes it listen.
B
It literally sounds like a musical.
A
It's a fun, dark song. It's a fun song about almost getting robbed and then just, you know, meeting some girls and hooking up. It's like, you know, a wild night.
B
It's a wild.
A
Like, that was a wild night. Let's put it to song.
B
Let's put it to musical. That's it. It is. It's like the idea for any musical. Like, oh, my God, what if we did that while singing?
A
Yeah, but this. Yeah, exactly.
B
Still great. It's still great. And the sample, obviously, is the funds.
A
It's a fun. I think that song is a fun song.
B
Now. Happy Birthday, Nate Dog. That is the reason it was played by Jacob. You know, there's always a reason.
A
Yeah.
B
Now if you were to go. If you were to say your favorite Blue Eyed soul sample, because I don't. I don't really appreciate the name Yacht Rock Fair. If you were to. If you were to say your favorite though. Is it. Is it De La Souls sample Peg by Steely Dan?
A
I absolutely love that song.
B
I knew that would be in your wheelhouse.
A
That's one for sure. Yeah, of course.
B
Is it. Is it Steely Dan in Lord Tariq and Peter Guns, which is pretty iconic. Black Cow.
A
Yeah.
B
Iconic.
A
I.
B
Is it commons use of Bobby Caldwell?
A
Yes, that's the one I was going to.
B
That's the one. Right.
A
Because it's a great song. Both versions, obviously, but that's. That's pretty. It's pretty good. There's also MC Lights, Georgie Porgy that uses Toto's version, by the way. Really good.
B
I. I like what you've just done.
A
Is that a good.
B
You just elevated yourself. That's a good. That's a solid, solid pull.
A
Because it's really. It's almost like the same song, just in her version about a guy. And it's like, I. And I just. I think it sounds great, but there's a lot. There's a lot more than you think, too.
B
Yeah. You got to kind of keep digging. Right.
A
Because there are some where it's like they just take it and then they change the sound, but if you listen carefully, you're like, no, no, I know what that song is. That's. That's Almost like the game you play. Like there was a song nice and smooth used Tracy Chapman's fast Car.
B
Did they really?
A
Well, not everybody listening knows this.
B
Sorry.
A
Yeah, I know you do.
B
Damn right idea.
A
But I'm saying for most people. So the first time I ever heard it, my roommate who was from L. A, he's like, you're going to love this. And I'm like, why am I going to love this? Watch. And it starts now. It starts like. It sounds like fast car. And I'm like, oh, I know this song. He goes, no, you don't. And then all of a sudden, it's, you know, sometimes I rhyme slow, sometimes.
B
Around all the way back to then.
A
Yeah.
B
When it happened.
A
When at the moment I heard the first time I heard.
B
Which was fascinating, by the way, because they sampled it immediately after. Like, it was such an interesting. There were two examples of that that happened back to back. You had. You had some times where I'm slow sampling fast car immediately. And you know the other one that I'm going to give you. You're going to know when I tell.
A
Go ahead, say it.
B
You're going to. Brand newbie and sampling Edie Brickell.
A
Slow down.
B
After.
A
Slow down. Hey, baby.
B
After what I am came out.
A
Yeah. So great point.
B
That was a time. Also, we didn't mention Bobby Caldwell. What you won't do for love.
A
Love that song.
B
Big sample as well. There. There are a lot of. Anyways, listen, it's so let's dead of summer right now. Why not spend a lot of time?
A
We love music. And we asked the question, what's the song of the summer? I asked on Twitter. So my friend Ben asked me this while we were having a few last week at the lake. He's a big song like song of the summer guy. We called all of our older kids. None of them had an answer.
B
No one?
A
No. We asked the entire New Hampshire women's soccer team who was heading home on the bus after a game. My son's girlfriend Elaine is on that team. And I was like, all right, let's ask the team. They gotta know. They didn't have an answer. So I was like, okay, there might not be a song this summer for the first time ever. And I know you're a music guy. People have to know what's a song this summer. We've had them, you know, again, the bar. So Shaboozi last. I was like, that's a summer song of the summer. The fast car cover song of the summer. Taylor Swift's Cruel Summer, obviously A song of the summer, right? Like this the last couple of years. There's been.
B
Kendrick had not like us last year.
A
Not like us was last year too. Very good point. Like there's been song every year. It feels like there's levitating Dua Lipa in 21.
B
Jacob. The. The. The Drake Baby Girl. What's that called again? I don't know.
A
I hate that song so much, though.
B
It was big this summer, though.
A
Yeah. I was gonna say what did I miss? Was probably the song that everybody was thinking from Drake.
B
Really? More than Baby Girl.
A
Oh, no.
B
Kia is. I think no Kia Nokia is bigger than that one. Then what did I miss?
A
But you just keep going back like the weekend had a song of the summer. I mean, Old Town Road was a song of the summer, right?
B
That was summer.
A
I don't know.
B
It was.
A
Yeah.
B
You sure?
A
Despacito. Clearly a song of a song.
B
Despacito.
A
Come on. Everybody sang that song again. You might not like it, Peter, but if it was on pop radio every hour, how it makes it the song of the summer? Doesn't any.
B
Any of the new. No, you're right. That. That's correct. But what about anything off the new Bieber? Anyone messing with UConn?
A
I don't know. All I know is I asked people who are the absolute like, this is the target audience of Song of the Summer of pop stations, you know, 18 to 25 year olds. None of them had an answer. It suggests to me there really isn't one this year. Right. Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
B
I don't want to know how the.
A
Sausage is made, man. I just want to know. It's good. Hear more more of Don Allen and Peter weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers.
Date: August 19, 2025
Hosts: Alan Hahn, Peter Rosenberg
Podcast: ESPN New York
This episode kicks off with the hosts reveling in the early signs of fall and quickly pivoting to a range of topics, including the unpredictable New York weather, beach safety, NFL quarterback controversies (with a long discussion about Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson), the pitfalls of rushing rookie QBs, college football changes, and a spirited search for the elusive "Song of the Summer." As always, the show blends sports expertise with New York attitude and a flair for pop culture detours.
The conversation is lively, banter-filled, and distinctly New York, combining witty sarcasm, sports nerdery, and cultural asides. Rosenberg’s references span sports, hip-hop, and family life; Hahn brings the sportswriter’s eye and a touch of sentimental nostalgia.
