Don
Don cool, man. Han Don holding his hammer. And Rosenberg Rapug.
Alan
Don doesn't hold a candle to that pumpkin pie haircut. I'm a freak. This isn't North Dakota. This is New York.
Don
This is Don, Han, and Rosenberg.
Peter
The best threesome I've ever heard on
Don
ESPN New York and streaming live on YouTube. It's Friday, Peter. It's Friday. It's Friday. I'll say it again. It's Friday.
Alan
You bet your ace it's a Friday.
Don
There ain't no Friday like a summer Friday. It's the. It's the. Of all the Fridays. I mean, there's good Friday.
Peter
This is a.
Don
This is special Friday. Summer Fridays hit different, don't they?
Alan
Well, summer football Fridays, you're talking about the ultimate.
Don
Throw that in.
Alan
It is the first sort of football Friday of the year. Because they did something yesterday I didn't watch. It was a rumor to me until I saw the highlight moving around on social media at the end of the game. But there was a football game played last night. They will induct people into the hall of Fame this weekend.
Don
They will.
Alan
So to me, that means football. We're playing football.
Don
It's football now. Playing football. My son was like, shouldn't you be watching this? I'm like, there's a lot of other things to be doing. Right.
Alan
Yeah, it's all anchor.
Don
You and I were so excited about it yesterday, talking about the fact it's going to be a game. But then when you said, you know, it's the Arizona Cardinals versus the Carolina
Alan
Pep, oh, my God.
Don
But it ended up being an entertaining game. Well, so you heard. Are you ready for the Beckoning?
Alan
Oh, Carson Beck.
Don
The Beckoning. They're calling.
Alan
The Beckoning is here.
Peter
Also.
Alan
Are you ready for the fact that next Thursday. Thursday, there will be seven games being played? That's how we're doing it. Next Thursday.
Don
Yeah, we're getting right. Like, this is today.
Alan
Last night was.
Don
We're going to break the seal. Thursday is now just open the faucet completely full.
Alan
Is that. Is that continuing? Yeah. No, no, no. No, Week two of the preseason.
Don
Yeah.
Alan
Has two Thursdays and three Fridays.
Don
Okay. Well, you're still getting a lot of. A lot of middle of the week football.
Alan
More and more middle of the week football. And then week three, the last week, they do four Thursdays and a lot of Fridays and only two Saturdays. So football is here, folks. A version of football is here. And. And it's perfect timing because yesterday to end the radio program.
Don
Yep.
Alan
Alan had a conversation about Odell Beckham Jr. And this wide receiver room for the New York Giants, which has a few Wiley vets trying to make the team. You got juju, Smith, Schuster, you got Braxton, Barrios, and of course Odell Beckham Jr. Who I certainly believe will make the team. And I think the Giants, I think if all things are equal, you're taking Odell Beckham Jr. Because I think they do recognize sort of the history here. You know, let. Let people dust off their old 13 jerseys and bring them back to the building. I think all things considered, they hope that he's on this team. And it sounds like, based on what you were saying, Al, that people are saying is that he's had a couple of good days of practice, which to the point you made, and I thought it was a good one. That may be a nothing burger of a good day in practice when you're like a year 5 vet, but when you're someone who's coming off a year of not playing football, when you, when you've been out of the league for a couple of years, good days of practice in August mean something.
Don
Of course it does. Now you can't. And he explained. That's why I like the way he explained it is you can't be. You can't expect it to be the Odell that you knew, you know, when the last time he wore a Giant uniform and he's making spectacular catches and he was. Look, all the things you want to say about Odell's time with the Giants, and I'd outline that he was part of really how it all fell apart. The end of what the Giants were, the Giant standard went out the door when Tom Coffin went out the door. And Tom Coffin went out the door because it was basically going to be it's me or him, and the franchise was choosing him. And so Coughlin knew it and he left. And the Giants really haven't been the same since. But this is a different Odell like Odell was in that time. A player that you just couldn't take your eyes off on the field sometimes. Good Sometimes bad, but he definitely was compelling. He's not that guy anymore. And he used a LeBron example. Not comparing himself, of course, to LeBron James, but more or less saying, like, you see a guy later in his career who's using his, his wit and wisdom more than his athleticism, but every now and then he can let you know, I still got, I still got a little something in the bag, but a lot of what I do now is off of my experience and my smarts. But I'm not going to be that guy that relies so much my athleticism anymore. So Odell's not going to be the spectacular catch Odell, but he still could be. The experience is valuable. And if his body can hold up when the Giants are looking for guys in that wide receiver room that can give Jackson Dart some options beyond, you know, when, when Malik Neighbors is ready to go full on in pads against defense, which we don't know when that's going to be. If in a real game you anticipate it might be week one, but we don't know. But you're going to. You need some guys that can still be threats.
Alan
And now Odell could be that. And that part's fun, but another part that it brings is a storyline to follow, a fun story to follow if you're a fan. I mean, I think, I think even if you have the highest expectations for this Giants team, people are not thinking super bowl this year. And so it's. What are the different things that are intriguing? Obviously we know storyline number one and Alan and I are in lockstep on this. Storyline number one is the development of Jackson Dart.
Don
Oh, it's the kid. No doubt.
Alan
Do you have your franchise quarterback? That is no doubt the number one storyline of the New York Giants. Some people would maybe argue that it's the, it's, it's how the head coach does. I think we would agree the head coach is. The second storyline you want to follow is, yeah, what is John Harbaugh? Yeah, but like, but I think there's a gap there because the fact of the matter is it's not a make or break year for John Harbaugh. It is a make or break year for the Giants. By the end of this season, they will be making a decision on cool. Our future over the next few years is just Jackson Dart until we give him his big contract. That's our plan. Or at the end of the year you went, whoops, thought we had a guy. Let's see, is Baker Mayfield answering the phone? You know, like, so It's a. This. That is what this year is. I mean, you're talking about a kid last year, had a really good season. I think just enough promise to make you go, we think we have the guy. His development this year is everything. So you have the quarterback, you have the head coach, but then you also have this Odell Beckham Jr. Story that's a lot of fun, a redemption story. The prodigal son returning. And when he left, it wasn't on the best of terms. And as you so eloquently put it at the end of the show yesterday, his maturity, or lack thereof, absolutely played a part in the end of Tom Coughlin and this great run and sort of this last great era of the Giants, the boat party and the disaster in Green Bay, all of those things. The idea of coming back a Super bowl champion, a changed man who can now help develop young players and be a role player, really fun story. But, Allen, you also can't forget, we cannot go to sleep on the Cam Scatter Boo story for this team because that kid, his season ended with a gruesome leg injury. This is not your number one overall draft pick, right? Like, this is a guy who is going to have to grind and work to be a really effective player in this league. Seeing that he can still be that guy in year two after that injury, Allen, to me, that's another big story to watch.
Don
And also because what he's, you know, Scatter Boo was already last year an interesting story of a guy who sort of has come out of nowhere, even though he was a known college player and a known high school talent, this wasn't somebody that people were clamoring about in the draft, right? But they. They realized they had something special in him. And also when you think about it, the chemistry that he and Dart instantly had and how the two of them have become sort of like a, you know, a stepbrothers kind of thing, a goofy buddy cop film. Sometimes off the field, that's all fun. But that also adds to a vibe to a team that you're like, okay, this thing's starting to turn. So, yeah, I'm with you. On. On his story. Cam Scatterable is another guy I'm watching as well. And the one thing else that I would add to this that I think is now getting overshadowed and it really shouldn't, but because we focus so much on offense, and for the Giants, offense is everything, right? Because you got to know is Dart, that guy, they don't really have a ton of weapons. I don't think he's going to be a guy that's going to throw a lot. I think they're going to be a line of scrimmage, beat you up, run the ball like they're going to be that team time of possession. That's what they're going to want to be. But defensively, Peter another story with the Giants to watch this season, and it's already developing, is I'm going to give you four names and all four of these guys all have probably going to compete with each other more than anything. Brian Burns is one, right? We already know that. Kayvon Thibodeau, who you know, is another who's continuing to have to prove himself now even more. Abdul Carter is the third name and the fourth name might be the most you talk about. Jump off the page. Orville Reese if you ask anybody around the Giants, Orville Reese has been the guy that every day somebody is saying something remarkable about him, whether it's a coach, a teammate or especially someone on the offensive line or somebody that's trying to run like he is. Everywhere, they're saying everywhere. Athleticism for days, his anticipation, his motor that could make the Giants also a very, very compelling story. Because he's special. They, they knew they were getting something special out of him when they drafted him. Right. Like you knew everybody talked about all the.
Alan
That's easy for you and me to
Don
say, especially when you're trying to talk fast. Shouldn't do that. Should always breathe between words. That's right. But those four guys could really tell you something about what the Giants can be on it on the defensive side, which to me takes them back to what they when the Giants are good because their defense is elite and has guys that get after the quarterback and has big hitters and the Giant defense for a long time has really not been that.
Alan
Also, how is Isaiah likely back to the offensive side of the ball for a moment. And do you have someone to fill what has been a void on this team for the most part at tight end over the last several years?
Don
That's true.
Alan
There's a lot of fun stuff to watch. And on the flip side for jets fans, you know, there's a multitude of stories to watch there as well. Again, none of them, I think, lead with the jets going to the end with the jets going to the Super Bowl. But Alan, I personally am in Vaz an outsider. I am invested in the Geno Smith story.
Don
I am don't, don't go any further. Why? What is it about the Geno Smith part of the story that has you invested in what he's going to be,
Alan
because there's certainly a world where obviously it doesn't work out and they move on and they try, you know, club Nick or whatever they end up doing. No, that's. That's certainly on the table.
Don
Right.
Alan
But the idea of a guy who. Man, you think Odell Beckham Jr. S time ended badly here. Geno Smith got knocked out by a teammate, man. Like, it couldn't have gone worse. He was. He was literally a punchline. Okay. And then goes on this redemption arc where he ends up becoming a legitimate NFL starter who puts up real numbers, wins lots of games. Like, no matter what we think about Geno Smith, and I understand it's probably hard for some people in this market to accept it, Alan, he turned into a completely different player. And yes, last year, he was down, but last year he was on a team that was barely an NFL team. So I would love. I just. On a personal level, whether it leads to them going 8 and 9 or somehow they have a miracle year and go over 500, whatever it is, I just think it would be really cool because more than anything, those of us who love sports love stories. You're telling me it wouldn't be cool to have a year where Geno Smith was somehow the belle of the ball and surprised everyone and was a great New York Jet. Alan, that would be tremendous.
Don
Another one of those full circle. Well, what you're doing, Odell coming full circle, Geno Smith coming full circle, going back to the teams that drafted them, where it ended poorly, and then having some type of a renaissance to help the. Both teams. Like, those are both the same type of stories, just with both teams here in this market. And look, Gino is. Was he 34? 35. Right.
Alan
He's no spring chicken.
Don
No, he's not, But I think 34. But Frank Reich, who's the. The O.C. he comes in to take over an offense.
Alan
35.
Don
35. Okay.
Alan
So.
Don
So, yeah, he's been illegal.
Alan
He'll be 36 this season.
Don
Okay, but listen to what Frank Reich. You have that on your page in front of you. What? Frank.
Alan
Sure, here I do. He's Frank Reich on Geno Smith. Geno's a leader. He's a leader of the offense. Make no mistake about it, in every way, shape and form. And to me, what has come crystal clear to me in this early time in training camp, the attribute that sticks out to me is his laser focus. This man is laser focused. Like, people don't understand, like he comes to work. He comes to work and he is locked in. And I feel like the whole offense plays off of that. That's a really big deal.
Don
And that's, That's. That sounds good if you're a Jets fan.
Alan
Oh, you love to hear that if you're a Jets fan.
Don
But I, I've. Here's the thing, though, that I keep going through because I said I would not be fooled again, right? I'm not drawn in. Like, I need to see it for real because there's a million question marks about the Jets. I cannot question the roster makeup and the build, the building that Darren Muji's done. I can't question any of it. That's intriguing. I feel like from a personnel standpoint, the jets are in a good place. But there's so many times in training camp where you hear things like this and you really start to get drawn in and you feel like maybe this is the year it kind of starts to work. And then of course, the jets always jet and find a way. And with Geno, I'm going to be skeptical, just like I'm going to be skeptical with Don's good friend ag I got to see it. I. I cannot buy in completely. But Frank Greg, I don't feel like Frank Greg's a guy that's going to throw around hyperbole that easily. And if he's really. If. If one of the things he's impressed with the most is that I got a veteran quarterback who's come in and he's. He's locked in. Now, Geno's had a bit of a sketchy off season. He's had to deal with some things, but if he comes in and he's locked in. They have weapons on this team and they can fly under the radar, no pun intended, with the fly thing. But if they can come in flying under the radar and not have great expectations and get off to a good start, you know, that's the good feeling and that's the start. Then you start getting the buy in. And now I'm really, I'm really curious to see just how good this team can be. But I have heard that Aaron Glenn is bouncing around, around training camp and he loves the culture and the vibe that they've got going on there. He's got a grown up coaching staff because he knows he built a bad coaching staff last year. They. They did not have the culture they needed to have this year. I think he learned from his first year, made the adjustments and it sounds like they feel really Good about everything they have there, but it's still a build. It's going to take time, but a good start, especially for Gino, is critical for them to. Just for anyone to want to truly buy in. But on the Giant side, it's. It's a completely different story, I think, because it's the beginning of what is a. A rebuild. And it starts with a new coach who might need. Maybe he needed a change of scenery, too, right? After all those years in Baltimore. Maybe this is giving him a little bit of a rejuvenation, and that could be also, like you named Harbaugh as one of the top stories along with Dart. I'd put Harbaugh number one, not Dart, because he has a lot riding on him in this first year to show that he can have the intangible impact on a franchise that has been, let's be honest, wayward ever since Tom Coughlin walked out of the room.
Alan
Wayward is kind.
Don
It's the best way to describe it, right?
Alan
No. Yeah.
Peter
No.
Don
Rudderless.
Peter
Right.
Don
Like, that's really what it's felt like. They've. They've kind of just been throwing things at the wall, hoping it'll stick and changing it up every two years. New coach, new gm, new change, this and that. Like, this feels like a guy. A guy comes in, he's got to bring stability and just get them. As Don always says, just don't embarrass me. And that's really what John has on his plate right now, is this season for the Giants has to be one where they look like the stability is. Is finally back and there's no more turbulence and no more, you know, embarrassing moments and them just looking overwhelmed or, you know, even. Even the year that D had success and he won coach of the year, like, there still was always things going on on the periphery. John's got to really put all that stuff away and just be a just respectable, functioning franchise that. That looks like it's heading in the right direction. You know, discipline. We're already seeing some evidence of that. You do have some of the goofiness, but, I mean, you do have young players. You're going to get that stuff. It's New York. Everything's going to be magnified. But if what his. If his excitement about Dart, like, we heard him talking about Dart, I know that's on your page, too. One more thing to leave with the listeners before we get to calls is, I feel like let's remind him this is Harbaugh. The excitement in his voice about working with this young quarterback who we do see as sort of a playboy, a guy likes to be out and about, have some fun and all that. But just like what you heard Reich say about the veteran Geno Smith being locked in. Listen again to Harbaugh said this, I think a couple of days ago or maybe even a week ago about dart and what he likes about working with him.
Alan
Here we go.
Don
Guy's a competitor, man. He's a competitor. I think I already knew that, but I've seen it firsthand. I've seen it play to play day to day in the meeting room. Charismatic leader, loves ball. I mean, you know, from when you're from afar, you don't always know all the ins and outs of a guy, but this guy is obsessed with football. You know, he wants, he wants to know everything about everything all the time. You like that new quarterback? Yeah, that's something that I think for him as a veteran coach, it's almost like maybe this is like rejuvenating for a guy like Harbaugh. Right. Learn and I love to teach.
Alan
Well, he's coming off a year where, you know, it seems like Lamar was done learning from John. Yeah, that's my point, that that relationship had run its course. Yeah, he was no more Miyagi, no more wax on, wax off for Lamar Jackson. He felt he was good. So, yeah, no, he is going to be excited by. And if you're Jackson, dart, you know, a lot of mixed feelings about the ability or lack thereof for the last regime to lead. So maybe having this leadership really will spark something in Dart as well.
Don
Both franchises desperately need the fan bases, desperately need a reason to buy in.
Peter
Right.
Don
Not, not the superficial reason to buy in. Young quarterback. Right. Or, you know, the talent on the, on the jet side of things or you know, what you're hearing about Reese, like, I'm just a Giants fan or I'm just a Jets fan. So I'm like, that's superficial stuff. Now you got to have true buy in. Not that you, you know, it's not about. If this is what I said about the Mets yesterday, you just want to have a reason to think that it's going to be okay and this is heading in the right direction and that it's not a house of cards or that Lucy's not going to pull the football away because it always happens. And I think, you know, John brings that kind of stability. And as a Giants fan, I think that's what you're looking for. It is. Don is joking, but he's not just don't embarrass me anymore. I want to feel like I'm in the league again, like I'm a Jets fan and that's all I ever asked for. I just want to feel like we're, we're at a relegation and we're actually back in the NFL. When I, when I watch Red Zone, I don't want to make it feel like I'm on the outside going, is that what the league looks like?
Peter
Right?
Don
Is that what it, is that what good football looks like? Because I don't get to watch that. Like, you want to feel like you're just, you're back in the league. It's not going to happen overnight. It's not going to flip. When you're as bad as these two franchises have been for the last couple of years, save for that one season with the Giants, but when you're as bad as that, you're man, you're going to be, you want to just feel like it's heading in the right direction. Will both franchises give us that? Or at least one? And if we're a picking only one, Peter, which one's going to, which one is it going to be by the end of this season that will be able to say that with full confidence, like, you know what, this thing is heading in the right direction. This team is on the rise. Like when that second year with, with Dan Campbell in Detroit, long time laughing stock franchise. But all of a sudden you watch that team at the end of that season and, and you went, you know what? Detroit's no longer a joke man. And next season there'll be a team.
Alan
Well, I'm sorry, we can get into this further and we will because now we got a break. But, but to me, the obvious, there's an obvious answer of who that's more likely to be. Shohei Ohtani's interpreter was fired today. Ippei Mitsuhara ran up gambling debts to a Southern California bookmaking operation.
Don
The inside story of the biggest scandal in modern baseball.

He was absolutely bananas.

You know what? That's really good. Oh, no. First of all, it's adorable. Second of all, it really does work for a lot.
Alan
I know.
Don
All right, so on that, you know, we talked about everybody. Everybody's kid has a drop except my kids.
Alan
That's right.
Don
We had a discussion over dinner last night about. Yeah, I love that. And. And so I was saying, like, hey, you know, I need you guys to step up.
Alan
You guys, all the other children.
Don
Yes. So Callie is now self conscious about her Starbies thing, and she doesn't want to do it. I'm like, but it's hilarious when you say it. She won't do it. Gracie be at her age 18. Everything she replies to is bruh. Like, that's her response.
Alan
Really?
Don
Yeah. If something's great, it's bruh. If she doesn't want to do it, bro. Like, it's just. But she says it in this way. Teenage girl.
Sponsor/Ad Voice
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Alan
Okay. Did you get it? Did you get it?
Don
No. Oh, no. Like, I'm like, no, wait, we need this. And she's like, I'm not doing that. I'm like, come on. That would be the most utilized one.
Alan
No, bruh would get really. That would be really useful.
Don
Yeah. Yeah.
Alan
And so you got a tricker now. Do you know how we got this? I got a record. Natalie. Natalie miked Maya with one of my portable USB mics. That's why it sounds this good.
Don
That's high quality.
Alan
Do you hear? I mean,
Don
there's like two. Oh, nos there.
Alan
No, it's three. The full drop. The full drop is this three.
Peter
Oh, no. Oh, no.
Alan
Oh, no.
Don
See, but the first two are the same. Like, they sound so similar.
Alan
Sound similar. So the last one's.
Don
The last one is the Earth urgent one. It's like, you know, it got real. Like, it's real bad now.
Alan
No, it's gonna be. Get ready for football Mondays after a Jets game. Oh, no. Oh, it's so good.
Peter
No, no.
Don
You know what it is? It's, hey, the Mariners released a righty catcher who hits 175, and guess who signed him. The Yankees. Oh, no.
Peter
Yeah.
Alan
There's levels to it. It's like the Mets hired a guy who does splits.
Don
Oh, no.
Alan
You know, Judge's injury. It turns out he's out another couple of weeks.
Peter
Oh, no.
Don
Right?
Alan
Oh, my God, the Jets, week one. There's levels. There's levels to the. Oh, no.
Don
Yes. That's what I love about the drops. It's great. All right, now I'm really.
Alan
So now you really got to get. Get her involved here.
Don
Callie. For sure. But. But Gracie, I'm going. You're right. It has to just be done on a video.
Alan
It's. Yeah, you just, just, just fix it.
Don
I'm telling you, nobody drops a bruh like she does.
Alan
Speaking of. Oh, nos.
Don
Everybody talked about all of her. All the. Yeah, listen, I was sped up a little too much.
Alan
No, you're so. You're hyped up. You're all. You're all.
Don
I've been talking football.
Alan
You're like. You're all high up Mountain Dew. Let's. You want to talk to Ira?
Don
Of course we do.
Alan
If we're talking jets, how do we not. Ira. What's up, buddy?
Peter
Hey, what's happening, boys? You know that drop on the oh no drop. That is classic. You definitely. You haven't. Hopefully you won't be using it for 17 weeks, I hope. Alan. I don't. And I think you both bring up really good points for both teams. The Giants, of course, ahead of the jets, because I do believe that their franchise quarterback. I think they have a star quarterback. But with Peter's point, with Gino, you know, I think everything comes full circle and there's some redemption. And I think he's really coming back here to prove that on his way out was really not what he's all about. And as much as I said I would take Baker Mayfield in the second if it was possible, I think Gino's going to have a good year. If he could say healthy. It doesn't mean playoffs, it doesn't mean I'm giving him a five year extension, but I think he's going to put up numbers. I think he's going to be somewhere, you know, 38, 4,000 yards, he'll get his 25, 30 touchdowns is 15 interceptions. And the jets quarterback play, the bar has been set so low. That could turn out to be a really good season. The Jeff fans.
Don
Yeah, that's. You started out. Yeah, I think what I was saying there. And thank you, Ira, is with the bar set so low and that's kind of the point I'm making on the jets side of things is what you're looking for. I think there's only one story, Peter, really. There's only one story that matters by the end of the season. You know, the story is going to
Alan
be the only story that matters by the end of the season.
Don
I mean, there's. Yes, there's multiple stories with the jets, but the only one that matters is by the end of the year. Do you feel good enough about the. What the jets look like? Record is record. You're going to be out, talented, you're going to. There's always going to be something. But by the end of the year, are you like. No, no, that's a good football team. Like they're, you know, they're well coached. You need to know that. Right? Like if you, if you know, Gino's not your long term solution. He's Mr. Right now, he's not Mr.
Peter
Right.
Don
But if you don't know about head coach at the end of this year, you got to start having a conversation again about finding the right guy.
Alan
I believe that is a fantastic and unfortunate point at the same time.
Don
Yes.
Alan
Because you wish you already knew that AG is the guy. And now I'm going to say AG all the time to drive Don nuts. But the truth is Aaron Glenn has to show promise this year. They have to take a step forward no matter who's a quarterback.
Don
Yep.
Alan
It could be Geno, it could be Cade Klovnik.
Don
Yeah.
Alan
It could be Frank Zappa, whoever, the other one, Bailey, Zappi, whoever it is, it doesn't matter. You have to take a step forward. You can't be the same or worse. Don Alan or it's over.
Don
Or Don or Don. Either one of us. Yeah, still a good point, right? Oh, no, that's exactly right.
Alan
Go to. Let's keep the calls going with the foosball and go to David, who wants to talk Giants for a moment. What do you got, David?
Peter
Well, first and foremost, I'm a Jet guy. I just said like, you know, to. To answer Allen, it's going to be the Giants because they have the quarterback and the coach already. Even though I want my jets to do well. And like Allen just said, Gino is the right now answer. And like you said, AG I'm gonna be honest, Peanut Chew, he's getting fired, bro. I'm just calling spade a spade. He's not gonna be able to each time, you know, they question him. He has cliches of superpowers. Is that the third? Oh, man, it's going to be a blender when he fails. But before we. Before you guys let me go. Did you guys hear that national anthem the other day? My man Rick and Dave were giving it and the person I could think of. Oh, well, I know for you, bro, I know that once you heard It. That was laughter city, bro.
Don
You need that.
Peter
That, that with the band. Oh, yeah, that with the band. Alan. Oh my God, bro. I had to pull over. Almost crashed.
Don
Yeah, that was Crash.
Peter
Laughing so hard.
Alan
It was.
Don
Because it really is another example of like, it's the, it's the symphony now. It's. Yeah. Now can you throw her voice in over it.
Alan
To the east?
Don
There's a way we can mash this up.
Sponsor/Ad Voice
Dude.
Don
Dude, she makes.
Peter
Don.
Alan
Don sounds like Natalie Merchant. I mean, the, the songbird of a generation next to poor Martha Reeves. And then we saw the video come out the next day that she was yelling at people, telling the backup singers, you know, I don't need you. Don't mess me up.
Don
That. So remember we wondered did they. Did they rehearse or did this. They put this poor woman out there and find out that she can't sing and did. No, they knew she couldn't sing and no one had the sack. Go, Martha, we're gonna, we're gonna change the plans here. Don't worry. Keep, keep the, Keep, keep the payment that we were going to give you for this. Don't worry about it. But we probably. We're going to let you just go.
Alan
Yeah, we. Listen, we respect you.
Don
We respect you so much that we just don't want.
Alan
We can't let you do this to
Don
yourself or us or the land of the free.
Alan
She had to know at that point when she was forcing it and rushing it into that little two second spot, she had to know what was going on.
Don
Well, you know, I think she was competing with the backup singer.
Alan
You think that's what it was?
Don
Yes. When you watch the video of it and like she would look at them, put her hand, like there was like. She clearly was trying to stay ahead of them for whatever reason. Oh, boy.
Alan
And the rock is red glare. No, she can't. No part of her could have thought that was good. There's.
Sponsor/Ad Voice
She's.
Alan
She was a real. She's a real recording artist.
Don
Was.
Alan
There's. I'm sorry, it's impossible. There's no way.
Don
What is this the sports equivalent to?
Alan
There's no. I don't know if there's such a thing.
Don
It's just like Tiger Woods 30 years from now is playing in like some celebrity golf outing and he hits everything into like every single. Like he's.
Alan
Yeah, like that.
Don
He's just chunking it.
Alan
Yeah. Like, like literally every shot to where people like, oh my God.
Don
Like, yeah, his swing looks like Barclays and he just chunks it yeah.
Alan
Every time people are like, is that Tiger woods or Chris Carlin?
Don
Is Carlin bad at golf?
Alan
I imagine he is. I know he likes to play, though.
Don
Why would you imagine he's bad at golf?
Alan
Well, does he just. He doesn't strike you as a great athlete now, does he?
Don
I don't know. He's got huge, huge calf muscles. It's a great point something.
Alan
He is very. Is.
Peter
Is that right?
Alan
He's strong on the calves, is what you're saying.
Don
Very big. Big on the calves. Hey, update. Family Affair written by.
Alan
Yeah.
Don
Mary JJ. Blige.
Peter
Yeah.
Alan
Dr. Dre.
Don
No. Well, Dre, I'm sure did the.
Alan
I mean, he produced it, so he has a credit, I'm sure. But.
Don
Yeah, right. But you know who else?
Alan
Jadakiss.
Don
No, you won't get it.
Alan
Hold on. Are you sure I won't get it?
Don
No. Yeah. I don't think you know this name.
Alan
Oh.
Don
But when I tell you who he is.
Alan
Who is it?
Don
His name's Bruce Miller.
Alan
And.
Peter
And.
Alan
And what else?
Don
Miller is Mary J. Blige's brother. Oh, no. Yeah.
Alan
It was her brother who wrote that with her.
Don
So he probably came up with the dancery.
Sponsor/Ad Voice
Yeah.
Said he wrote the core lyrics.
Don
There you go.
Alan
Wow.
Don
Mary, Mary, Mary, I got a banger. Mary, come here.
Alan
But no, by the way, by the
Don
way, this is gonna be a hit.
Alan
Joke's on us, cuz. It was a smash.
Don
It was a smash. So, did you know the islanders used to play this song after Winds back in the day?
Alan
Well, it's a. It's. I mean, it's. It's a heater like you hear in
Don
the coliseum in the locker room. My man. This was not.
Alan
I believe it.
Don
No, I believe in a thing.
Alan
This was. The locker room was their favorite song.
Don
And they would play this song that was like their song after games.
Alan
I mean, listen, it was a smash. I don't know how high it went on the charts, but it was a smash. So. Well, let's be honest.
Don
That beat, though, of course, that part's good.
Alan
And the remix with Jada Kiss on it is great. I'll take the rapping on it all day. But the. Her lyrics on are just. Listen, It's a hit. It's a great record. She did great. But, well, when you. Because you notice it, you're like in the dancery. You're like, what? Wait, what is a dancery?
Don
Wait. There's more to this, though.
Alan
There's more to the story.
Don
More to the lyrics, though.
Alan
Also, a lot of people are saying Jacob I don't know if you're familiar with song. A lot of people are saying that oh no sounds like Red Rat. You know the Red Rat record, the dancehall record?
Don
If I hear it, I probably don't
Alan
look during the break for Red Rat's biggest record, by the way, I missed the artist Red Rat at the time, but the record's big and everyone's saying the oh no is unmistakably the same. Tight up skirt, tied up skirt. Yeah, you might have to pull that up for the rejoin as you know, managing maintenance, repair and operations is never easy. We've been talking briefly about Family Affair by Mary J. Blige and why she decided to use the word dancery. And Brian in Sleepy Hollow has. Wants to add to the conversation. Brian.
Peter
Hey. Yeah, so like 20 years ago, I worked at this conference center, and my buddy. I'm still. I still talk to him today. Mazi. Shout out. Mazi. He's. He was Iranian. He just moved here, like, a couple years before that. Yeah, like, he was, like, very confused by the lyrics. Like, what is the dancery? What is. What? What is. So, like, we used to show up to work and we'd have to make coffee, and we'd be like, hey, let's get it percolating. And one. One day he actually. One day. One day he actually, like, printed out the lyrics. Yeah. And we all, like. We. We all, like, went out to a bar later, there was like, a dj and we handed it to the dj and where he was like, what. What the hell is this? But, yeah, we still talk to each other, like, you know, let's get it crunking. This dancer eat.
Alan
I think. Thank you, Brian. I think a lot of people deal with this, the dancery situation. I don't. I don't think right when I said it. You know, a friend that of many of ours, who we know, our guy, Kyrie Williams, texted me and he goes, oh, my God, my wife hates the song. She can't stand the dancery. So it's not just Natalie that's bothered by getting crunk up in the dancery. A lot of people apparently are bothered by this.
Don
I'm looking through the lyrics. I also. I told you, leave your situations at the door. I like that line, too.
Alan
Leave your situations out.
Don
Situations at the door, meaning don't. Don't bring your drama.
Alan
And by the way, we didn't even get into. Don't need no hateration. Toleration.
Don
Toleration. Yeah. Like, it's just hating. Don't be yelling. And you. We don't need any of that in this dancery.
Alan
You're not. Well, certainly not when you're in the dancer. And that's the last thing you want.
Don
No, you never want that stuff. The hateration. You don't want.
Alan
Well, I know when you add the
Don
holleration, that's completely Ruined.
Alan
Yeah, that's like gall becoming unmitigated. Golf can't have it. Now, how about.
Don
Were you gonna go somewhere? Because I have a quick little news.
Alan
No, no, please, go ahead. Give me a quick little news.
Don
So Variety is has this story that Netflix is expanding its interest in Major League Baseball. As you know, they had the, the All Star ceremonies, right?
Alan
I do, yeah.
Don
The Home Run Derby, you know, this time though, it's a scripted drama. The streamer is developing an untitled drama series about the storied New York Yankees baseball team. MLB Studios, Jason Bateman's aggregate films and also writer, director, producer Josh Wakely are all on board. So Jason Bateman, noted Nicks fan, is in the middle of this thing. So details about the project are minimal so far, other than the fact that the series will take on one of the most decorated franchises in American sports and take place across the team several eras.
Alan
You know, I'm not think this could
Don
be like a drama about the Yankees that goes throughout its history. It's a drama series, so it's, it's interesting in a way. Like how they, how they would. How they drawing you. Like, what is it going to be?
Alan
Well, there's so many ways to go, but like think about what HBO did with winning time and the Lakers. That's what I was thinking. You can, you can totally run that play with George Steinbrenner in the New York Yankees. There's a lot there.
Don
But if they're going through all the errors, is it. So do you take the Steinbrenner part and then have flashbacks to Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, like the build up? Because the best era to take would be the Steinbrenner era, right? Because that you talk about drama, you go from the Bronx Zoo to the core four. There's a lot going on there.
Alan
There's a lot.
Don
The drama of the, of the late 70s Yankees feels like that would be the centerpiece of a drama series. No.
Alan
Is that a better place to go than the six, the early 60s?
Don
I think so.
Alan
But you wouldn't. You would be interested to see stories on the inside of a team that was, you know, Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris.
Don
All right, you tell me what would sell more in today's world as a drama series? Something about the crisp, clean, you know, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, that era of Yankees or the Bronx Zoo, the 70s, the Bronx is burning. New York City, bombastic owner Reggie Jackson, straw that stirs the drink. Billy Martin fighting people, all that madness on paper and Then you're doing flashbacks and flash forwards of things all related on paper.
Alan
It's a no brainer. You're right.
Don
Yeah.
Alan
But I also don't know, I mean I have never read like, are there any great, like monumental historical books on the 60s Yankees that say there's more than meets the eye there or is it all pretty straightforward?
Don
That's a, that's a K question.
Alan
Yeah, because K K would be actually
Don
biographies, like of all the different guys. You know, the Mantle book is really good and, but you know, that's, that
Alan
is fun stuff either way. That is fun stuff though.
Don
Yeah. How about that? I, I, I'd watch. I've always wanted to have something like that. I thought about like an NBA one that would be, you know, a really interesting one to do that is not really a Laker one, but more, I think I've said this before. You're taking a player from like you, you get a LeBron James character and you, he, he, he falls into some type of a, you know, space time continuum and winds up in the 50s in the NBA. And he's living the life that those guys had to live that way after living what he, you know, because it's fun too. All based off of what, right. LeBron said about how, you know, this era and it, it's harder to play now than it was back then. And I can only imagine Bill Russell shaking his head at that. Like, are you serious? Did you see the sneakers we were wearing? Did you see the hotels we were staying in? Did you know, without. Sometimes we had to climb in a car and drive from one city to another.
Alan
I know what like bonkers.
Don
And still play at a high level. So like that, that would be kind of a fun, a fun thing to do too, if I could ever just, you know, take two years and write it.
Alan
Well, show us something now real quick.
Don
I don't, I don't have enough jobs.
Alan
How long is the Netflix deal with Major League Baseball? Do you know?
Don
No, they just really went into this world. So I haven't looked up the terms of their, their relationship with them. But Netflix is diving.
Alan
It's a three year arrangement.
Don
Okay. We're in year one,
Alan
so we'll see, we'll see where this goes. That, that's pretty neat though.
Don
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.

This episode marks the kickoff of "Football Friday" on Don, Hahn, & Rosenberg—a celebratory, summer-infused dive into the return of gridiron action for the year. The crew—Don La Greca, Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg—unpacks the beginnings of preseason NFL excitement, focusing on the New York Giants and Jets. They explore roster drama, redemption arcs (Odell Beckham Jr., Geno Smith), positional battles, and the greater emotional state of New York football fandom. The show balances football analysis with classic banter and pop-culture tangents, including a lengthy riff on Mary J. Blige’s “Family Affair."
“Odell’s not going to be the spectacular catch Odell, but he still could be. The experience is valuable.”
“The Odell story brings a fun story to follow if you’re a fan... a redemption story. The prodigal son returning. When he left, it wasn't on the best of terms.”
“Do you have your franchise quarterback? That is the number one storyline of the New York Giants.”
“The beginning of what is a rebuild... It starts with a new coach who might need a change of scenery, too, right?”
“Guy’s a competitor... charismatic leader, loves ball... this guy is obsessed with football.”
“More than anything, those of us who love sports love stories. You’re telling me it wouldn’t be cool to have a year where Geno Smith was somehow... the belle of the ball and surprised everyone and was a great New York Jet.”
“Geno’s a leader… what has come crystal clear… is his laser focus. He comes to work and he is locked in.”
“There’s so many times in training camp where you hear things like this and you really start to get drawn in… and then the Jets always Jet.”
“Aaron Glenn has to show promise this year. They have to take a step forward—no matter who’s at quarterback.”
“I just want to feel like I’m in the league again… like I’m a Jets fan and that’s all I ever asked for… I just want to feel like… we’re actually back in the NFL.”
“To me, there’s an obvious answer of who that’s more likely to be…”
This episode sets a perfect tone for the start of football season in New York—balancing cautious optimism, fan fatigue, and anticipation for storylines (Odell’s return, Geno’s potential, rookie breakouts, coaching resets). The hosts blend detailed sports analysis with trademark humor, music hot takes, and insightful calls. If you want digestible but nuanced insight into the Giants’ and Jets’ biggest questions—plus a laugh about “danceries” and the pains of New York fandom—this episode is an essential listen.
