Donald Legreca
Don, one day you're not gonna play football anymore. And if there's a God up above, it'll be soon.
Peter Rosenberg
Han, huge.
Donald Legreca
No, but big. Yeah. And Rosenberg.
Peter Rosenberg
I didn't listen to anything you just said.
Donald Legreca
This isn't North Dakota, this is New York.
Peter Rosenberg
This is Don, Han and Rosenberg on 880 ESPN and the ESPN New York app. Well, I guess, Don, it's Don and Rosenberg today. Cause Alan is dealing with a family issue today. But I am. Peter Rosenberg, that is Donald Moore, Marco Legreca.
Donald Legreca
There you go.
Peter Rosenberg
We are here till what time, don?
Donald Legreca
Here till 6:30, and then our coverage begins of Rangers Devils at Madison Square Garden. I'll be on the pre. Kenny and Dave on the call. End of the game is Igor Shusturkin's back. Matt Rempe's back. The Rempe crowd's all excited because I guess he'll pound the Devils into some.
Peter Rosenberg
I know everyone's got. Everyone's got their. Is getting emotional because they're getting very.
Donald Legreca
Oh, very emotional.
Peter Rosenberg
Very emotional.
Donald Legreca
And I'm talking like an Alan Hahn emotion that.
Peter Rosenberg
Me, too. I know the Rempe people. They got a Rempe in their pants. However, we also have. They're gonna repeat themselves before. And I had Face Off. They might Rempy themselves.
Donald Legreca
That could become a thing, man. If he could stick in the lineup and not constantly get suspended. I rempied myself.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. Also, guys, you're not gonna hear me say this every day, but we have a big college football game tonight, and it's all over ESPN's airwaves. Notre in Penn State in the Orange bowl, aka the College Football Playoff semifinal, is tonight. The telecast is. There's so many different ways to consume the game.
Donald Legreca
So many.
Peter Rosenberg
It's crazy. ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN News. I think there's one at, you know, Pat McAfee's cousin's house. I'm making that up. But every version you could possibly imagine. Lee Corso's grandmother, presumably, is no Longer with us based on.
Donald Legreca
We don't know that Lee's age.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, she has to be 165 years old.
Donald Legreca
Yeah, I think we would have heard something if we were still alive.
Peter Rosenberg
But guess what? If you want to listen to the games, 10:50am will have both the Orange bowl tonight and the Cotton bowl tomorrow, its entirety. And on 880, right when our Ranger coverage is complete, I'll get through the.
Donald Legreca
Post game as quick as possible for this one.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, Donald, blow through the post game and we'll get right to it.
Donald Legreca
Now, I know you're not a huge college football guy.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, that's described that way at times.
Donald Legreca
But if this doesn't get you, then I guess nothing will. I mean, this is a very, very attractive matchup. Penn State, Notre Dame. Penn State's kind of New York adjace. It's not that far away. I know it's not close.
Peter Rosenberg
Holtz versus Joe Pop, but it does.
Donald Legreca
Have a lot of cachet. The subway Saquon vs Rocket Ishmael, the Subway alumni here in New York. There's a lot of people that love Notre Dame. Our Pinheads suit. John Winthrop's a big Notre Dame fan. He's actually saying he's going to spring for wings tonight when he watches the game.
Peter Rosenberg
Really?
Donald Legreca
And date is a great story. I thought they were going to fold up shop after the whole Sandusky thing. They've gotten off the mat and now a couple of wins away from a national championship. And these are two pretty sexy programs. And this is fun. No offense to Texas, Ohio State, I think that's going to be a great game tomorrow, but I think this is the game that everybody's really excited about in this area.
Peter Rosenberg
Certainly.
Donald Legreca
What's Aler going to do? Is he going to come out? Is he going to stay at Penn State? I would really think that would be dictated by how he plays tonight and potentially in the national championship game. He said he's going to go back to Penn State for a senior year, but his tweet was somewhat cryptic, like, my plan is to go back. So many pundits believe that if he has a couple of big games here, that maybe he'll change his mind. And if he does, does he get into the conversation with Sanders, with Ward as a possible option for the Giants? We did hear Joe Shane is on his way and will be at the game. I mean, that's just doing your due diligence.
Peter Rosenberg
Have you gotten to watch Aller much this year?
Donald Legreca
Just I watched it in the Penn State game again. Nothing that I go, I have to have him. But I can't say that about Warder Sanders either, quite honestly. But he's got big stats. He's got Warren the tight end who's got 1100 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. There's a defensive end that's also a great player. There's potentially three players on Penn State that in the top 10. Notre Dame's got some players, too. So if you're a Giant fan and you're in the business for a quarterback, there does seem to be a lot of traction around this kid possibly coming out depending on how he plays.
Peter Rosenberg
Tonight I'm going to say something positive for college football. And by the way, we'll open up the phone lines. 1-800-919-3776. We're going to get to what's happening in Los Angeles, the craziness, the tragedy and also how it's the sports implications. We'll get to that in a moment. Don, just hit a little bit of Rangers. We'll do some more there. We'll also talk about a Knicks win last night which had some good but also had some bad. But the phone lines are open on whatever you want to talk about, including tonight's college football semifinal. Let me give it up for college football. All right. I've been hard on college football a lot. I had periods in my life where I was more into it. Certainly recently I've not been a huge fan. The fact of the matter is they're making me eat my words because my biggest problem with it fundamentally was the way that they crowned a so called national champion. I just thought it was ridiculous. And then I thought this litany of bowl games with no meaning, you know, the Uporn.com bowl, none of it made sense to me. I just didn't understand. Yeah, no, it didn't make sense. It was about making money and none of it was really about crowning a champion. It bothered me to now be sitting here where you're going to get two absolutely iconic, historic franchises or universities playing in a semifinal game. Don, I got to give him credit. This is what the point was. This is meaningful. You now have on a Thursday night and a Friday night, two awesome matches with four historic colleges. Listen, it may not be my cup of tea. They're going to get me this weekend and they should. This was the whole thing.
Donald Legreca
They're doing it right. And then you always looked at those like the Boise State story and say they never get any love because they're never going to be ranked in the Preseason, they're never going to have a schedule that's going to give them an opportunity to play for a national championship. And then when you would get to just the four teams, you wouldn't be able to get them. They expanded. Boise State gets in and Boise State gets bounced. But at least they got the opportunity to try to prove themselves. It didn't work out, but at least everybody gets an opportunity. You got the upset you were looking for. Number one, Oregon got trounced by Ohio State. But this is the way you want to do it. They'll probably expand it again. That's just the way it goes. Because as you said, it's all about money.
Peter Rosenberg
Did you say trounced?
Donald Legreca
Maybe I did. I don't know. Yeah, either way it was bad, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, I think it's trounced. And you said trounced.
Donald Legreca
I'm not even sure what I said. It'll be repurposed at some point. The ends at 4:30.
Peter Rosenberg
We'll have to find out. No, it's, it's. It's very cool, man. I'm in. I am in tonight. Listen, I'm. Let me guess. Kickoff is what time again? 7:30 or coverage? Kickoff? 7:30. So the game should probably end about, you know, 1:15 or 1:20 tomorrow morning. But I'm going to enjoy every bit of the 5 hours and 45 minutes of football that we get tonight.
Donald Legreca
It is a lot, but it's the start of something big, right? It is if you're a football fan. You got tonight, tomorrow you got Ohio State, Texas, and then Saturday. You've got Saturday, Sunday and now Monday.
Peter Rosenberg
It's crazy.
Donald Legreca
We won't know where Monday games is. Is it in la? Is it in Arizona? But we're going to have five days of meaningful football here.
Peter Rosenberg
And let's get into that now. But before we get into the serious part of it all, how do you feel about the Monday night playoff game? I don't know if I need it.
Donald Legreca
I don't, I don't. I don't like it.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm not. Why am I not into it? Like, I don't like it either.
Donald Legreca
I don't know whether it's the traditionalist in me or just like, it feels unnecessary because you get Saturday football, you get Sunday football. Like, is it like. And it's a standalone game? I don't know. It doesn't do what it's supposed to, I guess everybody gets excited. Why not more football? I don't know. It just doesn't. It doesn't move me at All.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, listen, obviously we love espn. We love. We get a Monday Night Football game with Big Joe and Big Troy. But yeah, there's something about the actual, like the way the weekend lays out that I'd rather get the three game Saturday and the three game Sunday. This just, I don't know why it's funny. I'm into the Sunday night though. Like, I'm cool with Sunday night because we've always had that. But, but the. It just feels a little bit odd. Anyways, speaking of that Monday night game, which is the Minnesota Vikings and the LA Rams in Los Angeles, we learned within the last couple of hours that they are still planning and attempting to play that game in Los Angeles at SOFI Stadium. They have Arizona on lock as a backup. But Don, as of right now, even though with some of the fires there's still zero percent containment, and it should be noted some good things did happen overnight. For example, the fire that was starting off Sunset in Laurel Canyon, that fire was contained, which is obviously incredible news. But you've seen Don up and down the Pacific coast highway, just complete destruction all the way to Malibu and evacuations all over Southern California. How do you feel about the fact that they're still intending to play the game in la?
Donald Legreca
Yeah, I mentioned this yesterday because I guess that's when the NFL issued the statement that they're monitoring the situation. And I just think, listen, I understand NFL playoff football is very, very important, but it pales into comparison to what's going on to those people. And friend of the show and I feel terrible for him. Billy Crystal, you know, lost his house, the house that he's lived in since 1979, lost everything. There are people that are lives have been completely destroyed. Five are dead right now. Zero percent containment. Lee Goldberg said that they may catch a bit of a break today because the winds are supposed to die down. So hopefully they'll be able to get some containment over the next 24 to 48 hours is probably what the NFL is hoping for when they're monitoring the situation. But I don't know, Peter, with zero percent containment, lives lost, the amount of attention that Southern California has to commit to this, does it make sense, even if we're moving in the right direction on Monday to allocate resources for 80,000 people to be at SOFI Stadium for a football game when you can get out front, move the game to Arizona. The people that have tickets now have a way of being able to go to Arizona if they need to, sell if they have to, rather than waiting until Saturday or Sunday, find out they can't play the game. And now you've really made matters worse as far as trying to get the game that play. Play that game at Arizona on Monday. So for me, considering that, you know, lives have been lost, resources are being used for that, and it's 0% contained right now on the Thursday before the game. If I were the NFL, I would just announce we're moving to Arizona.
Peter Rosenberg
You also literally don't know which direction the wind's going to blow here. I mean, you're talking about. We have no control over where this fire goes and whether or not it could go towards Inglewood and SOFI Stadium. We have just no way of knowing. We know that the NBA and the Lakers have agreed to postpone the Lakers Hornets game tonight.
Donald Legreca
Last night's Kings Flames game was postponed.
Peter Rosenberg
So we're going to talk to our colleague from ESPN, L.A. john Ireland at 4:00.
Donald Legreca
And they were off the air.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. By the way, you want to talk about how serious it is, they're not on the air. I don't mean they're not doing a show and they're playing Best of. They're not able to use their transmitter, which don't I be serious. I gotta ask John about this when we have him. I didn't know that was a thing that happens in any emergency where the transmitter is like not use. I always think of radio being the one thing you always have in an emergency. That's such a crazy thing.
Donald Legreca
So that's how scary this is. So what's the worst thing that can happen, Peter, is that they decide to move the game to Arizona. They play it on Monday and then they find out, you know what, we could probably play it in la. You got some egg on your face. Right. But the worst case scenario, the other way is that we get to Sunday and they have to now move this thing. The matters are getting worse and now you're really inconveniencing things by having to move things 24 hours instead of 72 hours, which. Or 96 hours, which what you have at your disposal right now. Again, NFL football is important, especially playoff football, but it pales in comparison to what's going on there. And I just think you've got a lot of resources that right. Are needed in that area. Is anybody right now thinking about a football game, as meaningful as the game is, Peter, is anybody right now on Thursday afternoon in Southern California thinking about Rams, Vikings, or are they thinking about loved ones or their own home?
Peter Rosenberg
Don, you could argue that on A regular week with no fire. Nobody's thinking about the Rams.
Donald Legreca
And that's the dirty little secret there, too. I mean, it's not the char. If this were the Chargers, I would say probably 75% of the building would be rooting for the Vikings. But considering the Rams relocating there a second time, there's probably a ton of Minnesota fans. So when you're talking about inconvenience, you're inconveniencing people in Minnesota that have to change their flight from LA to Arizona or change their hotel reservations, or people that live in California who are Viking fans that are gonna be trying to make the trek and just wanna know where am I flying to Arizona or am I staying here in la? So that's the dirty little secret, like how many people are really being inconvenienced? What percentage of Ram fans are gonna be 75%, 60%?
Peter Rosenberg
Listen, it's going to be really interesting to hear what John Ireland has to say. He's obviously very close to things, literally and figuratively, so we'll speak to him at 4:00. Also, hope we hear from some of our listeners in la. We certainly hope everybody is doing well. Safe was able to evacuate if you had to, and if you had to evacuate, that you're able to get back home soon.
Donald Legreca
Well, that's the thing, is that whenever there's an earthquake or a hurricane, the first thing you do is, all right, who do I know that lives in that area? And reach out to them. And I've been doing that today, you know, and I got a friend who lives outside of Burbank, and he's fine, you know, but like we said, we found out that, you know, our friend Billy Crystal lost his home. A lot of people did.
Peter Rosenberg
Billy's statement was him and his wife moved into that home in 1979, raised their children there, raised their grandchildren there. They're okay. But obviously they lost their whole life in that house, you know, and obviously we're thankful for everybody. Listen, fortunately, they did a really good job, it seems, in LA, of getting the word out. I mean, you hear about any deaths, it's absolutely tragic. The last number I heard was five. I don't know if it's gone up since then, but generally speaking, it seems they're doing a really good job getting people to evacuate. But, man, Don, to have people lose just everything. The visuals of the Pacific Palisades, that area, the level of wipeout that we're talking about, I've never seen anything like it.
Donald Legreca
No, it's incredible.
Peter Rosenberg
Have you seen the video before and after, like people just driving down the streets, obviously, you've probably heard of the Pacific Palisades Mall, right? It's a really well known suburb of Los Angeles. And it's gone. Like, it is gone. The restaurants are gone. Like, we, we just have not seen anything. And we were talking about this before we went on the air last night when that fire off Sunset was getting close to West Hollywood. Listen, I think there's always going to be a before and after with this fire. I think it's going to be that big a deal. Like, hey, that's how things were before the fire. Then after, Don, if that fire burns Hollywood proper and West Hollywood, you start having a conversation about, like, will Los Angeles ever recover? And I, as it was moving towards the hills last night, I really was thinking, I was like, oh my God, is LA not gonna make it? Like, so they caught a break last night. They got full containment on that one. But like you said earlier, Don, there's still a couple fires they don't have any containment on. And you don't know which way the wind is gonna blow this thing. Hopefully. Anthony was saying in our meeting that Lee Goldberg was saying on the news today was a chance with wins diminishing a bit, that hopefully things will get better. But it's terrifying and we send love to everyone out there.
Donald Legreca
And if that's the case, maybe the NFL has it right. Hey, let's wait till tomorrow. Maybe if things do get better, we can keep it. If it's worse, that still gives us a couple of days to be able to shift it over to Arizona. They've at least found Arizona. I don't know why Vegas isn't an option. We were speculating Vegas because it made more sense.
Peter Rosenberg
But could there be anything in the stadium?
Donald Legreca
I wouldn't think so because, I mean, you only found out a couple of months ago whether the Raiders would have a play out or not. So I would think they weren't booking anything for the, for that weekend for that purpose, but maybe, I don't know. Did the Raiders say no? I don't know how it works, but I would think Vegas would be a lot more convenient for people in LA to commute to than Arizona. But at this point, is that even into consideration? I just need to find a building where we can play this game and I'll win.
Peter Rosenberg
And I'll tell you one thing, whether it's in Arizona or the games at Sofi, the fire is going to be hanging over this entire game like that. Like, listen, Once they start playing the game, obviously you're playing the game, but, Don, before the game, it's going to be about that. They're going to be talking about it throughout the game. There's no question this is going to hang over all of it.
Donald Legreca
And also, we don't consider things like, I don't know, are there any players that live in that area that don't want to think about having to, you know, go leave to go to Arizona because they're trying to keep an eye on what's happening with their family? I don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
Wouldn't. Presumably they all have homes there, right?
Donald Legreca
Well, I'm just talking about that particular area, but yet still they have to have homes in LA proper that could still be in jeopardy over the next 48 to 72 hours.
Peter Rosenberg
That is a fantastic question. We don't know where the Rams players live. Tom, there could be players who've already evacuated. Do they really want to have to think about, I'm leaving my home. I'm not sure if it's going to be okay. I have. I. So that makes it complicated, too. Oh, that's, it's, it's a lot to think about. Let's. Let's go to the phones. 1-800-919-3776. And let's start off with Ira in Staten Island. Hey, Ira.
Donald Legreca
Hey, Ira. Uh. Oh. That's never happened in the history of Iraq. Him not there.
Peter Rosenberg
Is this, is this worrisome click?
Donald Legreca
It's a microcosm of the jet season.
Peter Rosenberg
When. That's not what you want from Ira.
Donald Legreca
I don't ever remember that happening. No. Super unusual that I've, I've taken Ira calls. I've heard Ira phone calls. Him not there.
C
It happened on DNR earlier this week.
Donald Legreca
Really? He was a IRA at first, and.
C
Then he disappeared and they were very concerned.
Donald Legreca
So it sounds like it's an IRA problem.
Peter Rosenberg
They believed he passed away.
Donald Legreca
Well, it's on the table.
Peter Rosenberg
I just spoke to him.
Donald Legreca
You know how important it is. Well, you don't know what happened.
C
That's fair.
Donald Legreca
You know, it's on the table. We hope it's not the case, but Ira, please call us back. Confirm.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's go to good old Griftster in Connecticut. Hey, Grifter.
Donald Legreca
Look at that.
C
Wow. That's never happened with Kyra.
Donald Legreca
I know. That's weird. I'm nervous.
C
I'm like, he's not there. Okay, you are. If you, if you do have a chance, please call back because we want.
Donald Legreca
To know you're all right.
C
I want to talk about the college football game tonight. Don, when you said this is an interesting game, I think it is, too. The, the reason I think there's more than tomorrow's game is both teams have the same formula on how they want to win games. Both teams have great defense, both teams have a great running game. So it's both teams with the same formula on how they want to win games. It's gonna, I think, be a very interesting game. I think both teams, Quarterbacks don't really do a lot, so to meet which quarterback can do more. Because to me, if whatever quarterback can.
Donald Legreca
Do more, I think is going to.
C
Be able to will their team to victory because both teams do the same thing.
Donald Legreca
And you're right, it's. What is it? A point and a half spread? Notre Dame's the favorite. I mean, that's close, man. This is, I think this is just a fascinating game when you consider the history of the two schools. Really just. It's been a long time since either one has been like this relevant. What was ND's last championship? 88. You know, I just think it's a fascinating, fascinating game.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. On paper, it's, it's, it's dead sexy. Let's go to Mo in Jacksonville. Hey, Mo.
C
Hey, guys, how are you?
Donald Legreca
First of all, I wanted to congratulate you guys on the new show. I've been listening since Monday.
C
Two questions.
Donald Legreca
What do you guys think of either.
C
The Giants or the jets using Mac Jones as like a bridge quarterback? Because he'll be cheap.
Donald Legreca
He's played in the playoffs and, you know, he has, he has starts under his belt. And then my second question is, have.
C
You guys received your interviews yet for the GM job for.
Donald Legreca
And head coaching job at the Jets? Because it seems like they're interviewing anyone with. Oh, my God, what is the total up to? What is it? 28 that I, that I saw. Oh, listen, they're doing their due diligence. There's no question about that. So hopefully they understand needing to get that right. I don't know. Does Mac Jones do anything for you with the available quarterbacks? You know, who we went over yesterday, whether it's Winston Fields, Kirk Cousins, there's a bunch. I just, I know he played in the playoff game, Peter, but I don't, I don't know if he moves me at all.
Peter Rosenberg
And not. Not me. No. I'd say Mo. It's a no for me. Doug. No, I haven't, I haven't seen enough. To me, there are other options out There if you want to, like, toy around and find someone. Like, if you're looking for a stopgap quarterback, someone just to be there for now, I'd get a veteran.
Donald Legreca
When you. Bridge quarterback, it's such a loose term, right? Like a bridge quarterback. I guess you define saying. All right, this is our temporary holdover until we can figure something else out. But isn't also their hope that your bridge quarterback could be more. It's like you're dating the girl with no intention of marrying her, but you don't rule out the possibility that you could fall in love and. And the relationship, you can progress. Do you really think Mac Jones is going to work out?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I don't.
Donald Legreca
Maybe, but I don't. I don't know. It's a thought. It's a name that I hadn't heard before you got that going for you, which is nice.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, good news. Ira is, in fact, alive. Hey, Ira. All right.
Donald Legreca
We were worried about you there, buddy. What happened?
C
Hey, change rooms. And I lost a wife.
Donald Legreca
You got to stop with the flip phone, man.
C
No, no, I. I still have the flip phone, but I call on the iPhone.
Donald Legreca
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
What do you. What do you hold on to the flip phone for?
Donald Legreca
Nostalgia.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, no, no.
Donald Legreca
Yeah, he wanted the phone. You know, you wanted to hold on to the phone the last time the jets were in the playoffs. That's what it is, right?
C
That's right. I had that phone when they were in the playoffs. So two things for the California. You know, we're thinking about people out there. Horrible. And the NFL is dropping the ball. The game should have been moved already, but, you know, as for the jets search. Yeah, they're doing their due diligence. Listen, everybody knows Rabel was the number one choice. It's not going to happen. And I tell you, ultimately, I have to agree with Rich. I think it's going to be Aaron Glenn, and I don't have a problem with it. I would much prefer somebody with experience. And real quickly on the quarterbacks. Listen, Justin Fields, he has the arm, the legs, and he has the size. I think if he gets. I know it's hard to say that if we just landed with Pittsburgh, you get the right coaching staff and the right coordinator. I still think this kid has a lot of potential, and I would roll the dice with him if I was a new GM and a new head coach.
Donald Legreca
I feel like you're right. Of the guys that are available, I think the upside potential is way better for Fields than anybody else. But you've got to get this coaching staff.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Donald Legreca
All right. Aaron Glenn, fine. He's a hot property coming from a winning organization, but he's a defensive guy, so you got to get it right on the offensive side. And he doesn't have any experience as a head coach. Same thing with Rex. Yeah. Rex checks a lot of boxes. Offense isn't one of them, so they're gonna have to get these hires. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, I'll say this. I should have given this probably a little more credit when we first brought up Aaron Glenn. He does check a couple of really important boxes, though, in my opinion, which are? A, you're coming from a great franchise who's clearly gotten it right.
Donald Legreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And B, you have a real history with this franchise. Those are two. I just know nothing about his demeanor as a coach. I don't. And none of us do. Like, none of us have seen the defensive room in Detroit. I have no clue. But there is something appealing about that.
Donald Legreca
Yeah. I mean, listen, he's done a great job on the defense. Right. They've had a ton of injuries, yet they're still very good. It's a winning organization. Championship game last year, possibly a championship this year. So I got no problem for the defensive side. But do I know he can run a team? Do I know he can handle offense, make this in game decisions? These are a lot of things that you don't know, that if you get wrong, then you're starting all over again. At New Balance, we believe if you.
Peter Rosenberg
Run, you're a runner, however you choose to do it.
Donald Legreca
Because when you're not worried about doing things the right way, you're free to discover your way. And that's what running is all about. Run your way@newbalance.com running.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. I didn't listen to anything you just said. Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. Why can't I remember what this is? What is this?
Donald Legreca
Sounds like something.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh. Cradle to the grave, Bob Deep. Yes, yes, yes.
Donald Legreca
Thank you.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you. Appreciate you. I was just thinking about this, Don. Actually, I wasn't. Why am I lying? My wife just texted me. She was listening to the show. Regardless of how anything goes with the fires, Don, how could the air quality be good enough Monday to ask people to be outside in the stadium?
Donald Legreca
Like, even if you so. But you still need the people to travel there.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a full dome. Yeah, it is a full dome. That's part of it. But still, everyone's outside. You're walking around, you're asking people to be outside.
Donald Legreca
I just don't see how this makes any sense. I understand the inconvenience. I understand from a competitive standpoint, the team that deserves the home field isn't getting it. But you know what? I don't even look at it that way because if they receded that wouldn't be the case. Minnesota lost three games this year but the Rams won their division. So they get the, they get the game in lake was Minnesota. But still the way it works is they're supposed to get the game at home. But I don't think you think about things like that when you've got a Nash nat a natural disaster going on. I mean you don't have the luxury of just having everything being perfect game isn't that important. You have the option to move it. Move it.
Peter Rosenberg
So if I opens up or. No, I believe it does it just.
Donald Legreca
Kind of a waste of LA if it didn't. Of course it does.
Peter Rosenberg
Although. Although it is weird. I mean aside from this, what's the point of really having a dominilla for football?
Donald Legreca
Does the excessive heat. I guess there could be a hot day, I guess but like LA during.
Peter Rosenberg
Football season doesn't usually.
Donald Legreca
I mean there's other events there, you know, concerts, you know what, what am I arguing?
Peter Rosenberg
I think any smart stadium should have it on yourself.
Donald Legreca
And in this situation it works out well if they do play and the air quality is bad. But I, I just, you know, Ira said drop the ball. I, I'm not going to beat them up. There's probably a lot of logistics that they want. They could take another day to wait. But I don't know, something just bothered me. Maybe I just need to get over it. The whole where we're monitoring the situation, dude, I don't know. I guess there's other ways to say it just feels like. It just makes it feel like this is way more important than it actually is in the grand scheme of things.
Peter Rosenberg
1-800-919-3776 oh, hey, it's JJ in North Carolina. Hey JJ.
C
Hey, gentlemen. It's been a while.
Donald Legreca
How are you going on?
C
Good, good. I tried calling, you know, before the, the actual case show ended, but before I just wanted, I never got to say, I just wanted to thank you guys for everything you do. I've been through a lot. I've been. You guys have helped me get through like breakups, work problems, passings in the family, a whole bunch of things. So when I was, when I was really down in the dumps, you guys. I would just put it on, and you guys always brought a smile to my face somehow, some way, but I never got to say that. But thank you, guys. This new show has been amazing. Han has been a great addition and. Yeah, but.
Donald Legreca
Yeah, this, this, this. Honestly, this change, jj, worked out very well for you because the one guy that didn't care for you is now no longer on it. And the two guys that did care about you were still here.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a good point.
C
I was gonna. I was gonna say when I was at the beach bash, Alan Hahn recognized and he actually brought me up. So I think Han was actually. Would go to me usually, no ill will to Michael. I still love him, but, you know.
Peter Rosenberg
He just doesn't care for you.
C
Right? You know, it's funny. You guys are talking about the. The picture for the show, right? I mean, you. Don.
Donald Legreca
I.
C
You know, I think we're close enough. I can take a jab. Peter and. Peter and Alan look like the freaking Blues Brothers over here. And Don, I don't. I don't know what's going on with the jeans and the. The leather jacket. Look like you're working at, like, a. Like a body shop for, like, a front for the mob or something. It's just an odd.
Peter Rosenberg
That's. That's.
Donald Legreca
It's. That's not nice at all.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, I know.
Donald Legreca
I mean, that was what we were.
Peter Rosenberg
Kind of looking for. Oh, man.
C
It's a good. It's a good look. It's just funny. It's just the. The odd resemblance of it, but you look sharp. You look sharp.
Peter Rosenberg
No, jj, it's. It's too late. It's out. The. The. The. The ship is out of the. Whatever. The barn.
C
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Trains out of the barn.
Donald Legreca
I look like Tony Soprano. I mean, I would. We. I. I didn't have that outfit. We. We said that just kind of how.
Peter Rosenberg
I'll decide to look, by the way. And it turned out perfect. It got Exactly. I don't know why it's perfect, but the picture that we're talking about. And by the way, if you're listening to us right now, whether on the ESPN New York app or on the radio, and you have not subscribed to the podcast or hit follow. Go to your podcast app, go to Spotify. Wherever you go, search for Don Hahn and Rosenberg. Hit that subscribe button if you already done it. Rate us five stars. Leave a review, please. That would mean a lot. But that photo. That's the photo we're talking about, Don. Allen and I should say are both wearing like kind of an open, unbuttoned black tie sort of look. And Don is just wearing like jeans and a leather jacket.
Donald Legreca
What a dress. What a white dress shirt.
Peter Rosenberg
It just, it's perfect. I don't know why it's perfect, but it wasn't that perfect. That was so Kay of him. You showed him love and what did he do? He stomped on you and then he.
Donald Legreca
Tried to make up for it, but everything he said after that were just lies to try to make up for the critique, which was honest and I didn't agree. But it's preference.
Peter Rosenberg
Have you ever heard a more sheepish fake follow up than him being like, no, no, but you look good. It was, it was disturbing, Don.
Donald Legreca
Yeah, troubling. I mean, these are the reasons why. I think maybe Kay had a point. But I still, I still love the guy because he's dedicated to the show. He drove from North Carolina to the beach bash. How do you not love that?
Peter Rosenberg
Now let's go to someone who is a fantastic caller to the show and someone I was thinking about earlier because he's in Los Angeles in the area, and that is Jonathan in la. Hey, John, how are you, buddy?
C
Hi, guys. Thank goodness, bro. I live more towards the Long beach area. I mean, I'm still a bit far away from where all that is happening, but I'm really getting, we're all getting covered. All the part of Southern California, especially me right here by Long beach, we're all getting covered by bad air. And at first, Don, I didn't really agree what you were saying, like, oh, they should move the game. And I was like, nah, you know what? By Monday it should be fine. Hopefully there's no fire. But no, no, Don, yesterday I went to work. I deliver, I deliver for, from Home Depot to houses and I deliver towards the Manhattan beach area close to Englewood. Let me tell you, man, I was out for four or five hours driving my truck in and out. And those four or five hours, man, like, I don't know if you can hear it from my voice. My throat is really raspy. It is really bad, man. The air quality here is pretty, pretty bad. And I could just imagine, I mean, England wood to, to the Palisade. It's about, I'll say 18 miles, 10 miles. So it's pretty close from there.
Peter Rosenberg
And also, Jonathan, I mean, you said you would have felt like in Manhattan Beach. I had a friend who evacuated to Manhattan beach. That was a better place to go to. So, like it's only worse from there. So we're glad you're all right, man. We appreciate the update and this is one of the more interesting things I've ever seen in the history of the show is we say goodbye to Jonathan from la and we go to Jonathan in la.
Donald Legreca
Really?
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, Jonathan.
C
Hey, man, how's it going? I used to be, I was telling Anthony, I used to be Jonathan from Toronto. I called you guys a couple times from Toronto, but now I live in la. So shout out to the other Jonathan from la. He's the og. Jonathan from la sound alike.
Peter Rosenberg
You're kind of a sound alikey for him too. It's true. So where.
C
I don't know if he's also from New York, but yeah, you know, I'm a transplant for sure.
Peter Rosenberg
So where, where in LA are you?
C
I'm in the Valley.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
C
I'm up in Tarzana. So you guys, you guys been here? So I'm close to like, let's say Woodland Hills, Calabasas, Trimming Oaks. I'm on the other side of the hill, right? I'm on the other side of like past Beverly Hills and all that, past the Palisades, where, where everything's going on and it's. I don't understand how they're gonna play. Like, I don't understand how that's even, how that's even like in the running. How that's even a question. The air quality is horrible. Horrible. It's absolutely horrible. I'm fairly, let's say I'm probably 10 miles out and it's terrible. Like you can't go outside, like all the kids, there's no schools and even we have the kids inside because we can't take them to the park, we can't do anything. It's terrible outside.
Donald Legreca
Now maybe the NFL knows something that logistically they can wait the extra day and still be able to move everything conveniently on Friday for the game on Monday, just to see that maybe if they can get it somewhat contained over the next 24 hours, the air quality will be better and then it'll be more feasible to play the game. But Jonathan, the way it feels right now, I think it would really take a miracle for everything to turn around in 24 hours. So we'll see what happens by the time we get to tomorrow. But it just doesn't feel like. Listen, I hope and pray it happens. Nevermind for the game on Monday, just for the, for the betterment of the, of the people there that they're able to get it contained. With the winds dying down tonight and, and get, get in front of this thing, man. But when I hear 0% containment, you know, people not being able to breathe, five lives already being lost, I, I just don't know how anybody there could be thinking about a football game. As important as the game is how anybody can be thinking about that right now in la.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks, Jonathan. Yeah, you know, and like you said, he's. He's in the Valley. Not exactly where the fire was at its worst, but close enough to see just how bad it was. It's. I just don't understand the logic here. Also, you know, God forbid the NFL just like, if this does inconvenience people financially, whatever, Don, God forbid they just take something on the chin and just like do right by people who would somehow lose out. Now they could, they could do it, Don. They could make this game entirely free, pay for everyone's travel and hotels. It still wouldn't dent the NFL.
Donald Legreca
Let's not even pretend they care about inconveniencing the fans, all right? They don't care. This is the same league that charges PSLs. They could care less about you. All right? They like your money and the tickets are already paid for, so you know what? They're not even thinking about you. What they're thinking about is the disadvantage it puts the Rams in and the inconvenience of teams preparing for a game in one venue and the game being played in another. All right, let's. Well, let's break that down. Both are domes, so there really isn't any kind of advantage there. The only thing is the Rams will lose home field advantage. You would think, because instead of playing in the comforts of their own building, they're going to be playing someplace else. All right, first of all, boo hoo, who cares? Second of all, listen, the Vikings are the better team anyway. Rams happen to win the team, win the division, so the semantics give them the home game because Minnesota is a wild card team. But Minnesota finished 14 3. And it shouldn't be something you worry about, but I am going to go. I'm going to be a different person in 2025.
Peter Rosenberg
How so?
Donald Legreca
I am going to give the big company, the big NFL, the benefit of the doubt, where they probably know they have these 24 hours that they can move the game to Arizona on Friday just as easily as they can move it today. And they're going to take those 24 hours to see what happens. And they'll announce sometime tomorrow morning or tomorrow afternoon we're moving the game that still gives people Friday Saturday, Sunday to change their plans. I'm hoping that's probably the case where the NFL knows they're probably going to have to move this. But they were probably told, hey, give us another 24 hours to see if we can contain this thing, and then we'll make a decision. And if things are the way they are tomorrow, Peter, I think they'll move the game.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. My name is to anything you just said. Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. How did we go from mob deep to this, though, Jacob? That's my question.
Donald Legreca
And we're. What am I on the pain no mind list?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. And what about poor all of a sudden?
Donald Legreca
Peter's in the main chair. Let's take care of him. You know, this isn't for me. No, no, no, no, this isn't for me. Yeah, yeah. This was just a Bounce Back song. Well, it certainly ain't for me.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it's not for me. Do you. Why we don't know. What were you thinking? What you just hit.
Donald Legreca
Did you hit the wrong button? Doing somebody a favor? No, I was just scrolling through and that was the first one I came with.
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, Don, what are you speaking of music?
Donald Legreca
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Our friend Ballard, okay. When he heard our idea for the Pick segment, thought that it. We should theme it. Pick them all based on the Metallica Kill Them all album.
Donald Legreca
Yes. And you showed me that.
Peter Rosenberg
And him and my friend Elliot made a little graphic.
Donald Legreca
Right. Pick them all but their first album. Kill Them All. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And I'm thinking, Don, we should choose a song from it with good instrumentation that you're into and make it the themes. The one he sent me today that I will say I liked quite a bit, he sent me to get me in the zone. Seek and Destroy.
Donald Legreca
Okay. That's one of. Yeah. Seeking. The big songs on that album are Seek and Destroy, Search Him, Seek and Destroy. Right. The other one's the Four Horsemen, which is one of my favorite. The Four Horsemen ride. Coming to take your life. All right, and then you've got Am I Evil?
Peter Rosenberg
Those would be the three you'd consider, you think?
Donald Legreca
Yes. Which is an old Diamond Head song, by the way.
Peter Rosenberg
So maybe next time let us come back with one of those. Or if you don't mind there, Jacob.
C
Oh, I got to get destroyed.
Donald Legreca
Ready? You do.
Peter Rosenberg
Let me hear. Let me get a little taste of it, see if this would. This would. This. The idea would be this being the theme for the playoff pick Segment where we're picking every single game. Let's look. A little taste here. I dig this.
C
It works.
Donald Legreca
Not bad.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I think that's it.
Donald Legreca
There's a lot of good songs.
Peter Rosenberg
Can you. Anthony, can you cook up a little? There's. There's football. We're playing football.
C
I already got the request out for.
Peter Rosenberg
The voice work, so we're good to go. All right.
Donald Legreca
So.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. So, Don, how are you feeling about this, a pick them all segment?
Donald Legreca
Oh, listen, I just like that. I like the fact that it's themed, but. But I. I'm. I'm not sure about the song. It's not one of my favorites on the album. Four Horsemen's probably my favorite. Jump of the fire is a great song. Am I evil?
Peter Rosenberg
Whiplash? Let me hear Four Horsemen, see if that's even better. Let's see.
Donald Legreca
There. We ready?
Peter Rosenberg
This is much better.
Donald Legreca
Now it kicks in. Ready?
Peter Rosenberg
I like the other one better. I like that one better.
Donald Legreca
Now get. Get blitz creek in there. Get that in there. Get to work. Get to steppin'so.
Peter Rosenberg
Far, I think the first one is the better intro, like, for a theme song, but.
Donald Legreca
Whiplash. Try that. That's gonna be easier.
Peter Rosenberg
Make up your mind. Which one? Whiplash.
Donald Legreca
Whiplash. It's easier to find. Why can't I? You know, you tell me to swing it around, and all of a sudden I start feeling it, and you tell me to stand down.
Peter Rosenberg
I thought, come on.
Donald Legreca
You keep telling me, here's Don McGregor. You should be able to be demanding. All of a sudden, I get in a groove, and the first instinct is, shut your mouth.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's hear Whiplash. This is the ascap.
Donald Legreca
Don't let it kick in here. I don't care. I'll pay the ascap. Is that still a thing?
Peter Rosenberg
Pick them.
C
We're gonna find out.
Donald Legreca
Oh, football.
Peter Rosenberg
They're playing football. Freddy Keefe.
Donald Legreca
Now this. I think this is it. It's gonna kick in right here. Here we go.
Peter Rosenberg
Anthony, you're still with me. It's the first one, right?
C
I like all three of the instrumentals for the purposes of what we're trying to do.
Donald Legreca
Thinking.
C
Knowing how you guys are gonna have to pick.
Peter Rosenberg
I do like the first one best. For I. I enjoy all the songs. I still think the first one fits the theme song.
Donald Legreca
I don't have a problem. It's. It's my least of the ones that were offered up, but I could still live with it.
Peter Rosenberg
But listen, you came to work today not thinking a thing, and you just found out that I was going to come in and go, hey, let's theme the whole thing around Metallica. You're feeling good no matter what.
Donald Legreca
No, I'm feeling really good. I need to know my role a little bit. You're right. No, your first instinct was right. Like, Don, calm down here. But no, seek and destroy is good because we're seeking to destroy each other in the pig. See, it's all coming together.
C
I was so happy.
Donald Legreca
I always wanted to interview Metallica about. It's one of my favorite albums.
Peter Rosenberg
Kill them all has to be off.
Donald Legreca
Of Megaforce Records 83. That album's over 40 years old.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, if it's a dead.
Donald Legreca
They were kids, but some of the biggest songs in their repertoire came from this album. They were kids. Like, do they listen back to that album and cringe? It'd be like listening to like you DJing in college. No, like listen to me. Something that I put down on Audio in 1988.
Peter Rosenberg
That's so different about music because so many. Yeah, cuz so many artists make their best thing when they're kids and no, I'm not saying. But.
Donald Legreca
But do they look back and go, God, I got a chance to record that today. It'd be a hundred times better.
Peter Rosenberg
Sure. But like, it doesn't change the fact that the songs were written the way those songs are written. Like the songs are made. Yes, maybe their performance could have been better, but the concepts, the ideas, they. They had to come at that time.
Donald Legreca
It's a great question. Do you know who wrote most of the material for that album? A former member of the band that people forget was in the band. Dave Mustaine from Megadeth. And they had a falling out. He left. But if you look, he was one of the riders of Four Horsemen jumping the fire Phantom Lord Metal militia.
Peter Rosenberg
And you know, it's now real quick before we. Because we've now turned this. This could turn into that day when you interviewed. Who'd you interview again?
Donald Legreca
Rob Halford.
Peter Rosenberg
We don't want to turn into a Rob Alfred day. Let's pick up Shlomo in Baltimore.
Donald Legreca
Hi, Shlomo.
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, Shlomo.
C
Hey, Peter. Don. How's it going? I love this new show. I with I'm coming in. Michael leaving. It's both addition by addition and addition by subtraction.
Peter Rosenberg
That is not nice, but thank you.
C
No, I love Michael, but I wish you guys would have gone with Ph.D. get smart. You know, for Peter Hinds on Not the point. That was considered.
Donald Legreca
That was considered PhD.
Peter Rosenberg
The problem is I mess it up because no one calls Me, in radio, I'm not known as Peter, Right? It just I firm. And I'll let you hear other points, Shlomo. But, like, I firmly believed Don could pull off either name because he's known as legreca and he's known as Don. In fact, when you say legreca these days, with his brother's success, it might be more confusing than Don because his brother's a warrior.
Donald Legreca
There really isn't anybody in radio that's a Don, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Not anymore.
Donald Legreca
Not anymore. No. Don Imus is no longer with us. But other than that. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
So my point was Don could go. Cause Don said, I don't know, maybe my last name. I said Don. In New York sports, everyone knows you're Don. Like, you're good.
Donald Legreca
Except for the ones who think I'm Dom. But this might hopefully clear it up, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, hold on. If we get to a meeting and someone high up goes, we're so excited about Dom Hamm and Rosenberg, we've got problems.
Donald Legreca
But do you think there are people out there that see the new show that thinks. Think that I'm gone because some guy. Now Don is on the show.
Peter Rosenberg
He replaced Dom. All right, Shlomo, what's your other thing?
Donald Legreca
Chris Mullen.
C
This is why I love this show. Peter, I have one bone to pick with you, and that's last couple enns, right? You're. You're defending Rothenberg. You know, I appreciate that I'm leap tagging out Leap baum or anything like that. But then yesterday you told Jews that we can't paint our kids rooms or put together cribs. So I just. I want to make sure that, you know, you pick a side in defending us or not. And one last thing. With ENN, I would love for it to be back at 6, but if it is still at 430, needs to change to a N after afternoon news. Love you guys.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you, Shlomo. I appreciate that. Well, hold on. Just to be clear and defend myself, I did not. When I got attacked a little bit yesterday by. By Alan, it was not really done. I got a little bit attacked for having someone paint my daughter's room. God, it's still so weird for me to say the word my daughter, Don. I've probably only said it out loud. I've probably only said the words my daughter a handful of times. Yet in my life, it still hits me like it's crazy, but. So she's coming anytime. My doctor said 10 days before the due date to 10 days after the due date is when we're really looking. So that window would start in six days. But we had someone paint the room. It was offered as a gift. But I also pointed out when talking about it that yes, sometimes our people, the Jewish people, sometimes we are apt to hire someone to do a job like that rather than do it ourselves. Now I completely recognize that there are handy Jewish people out there who get things done. My father in law can do anything. He can paint things, he can fix an air conditioner, he can install, he can do it all. That's not my background. My experience from Chevy Chase, Maryland. And now this would be where you know, people would go, oh, because you're born with a silver spoon in your mouth? No, I wasn't rich, but I just didn't have fixity parents. I didn't. My dad's not like that. My dad's a writer. My mom's speech, he edited a book. He'd fix up a McGovern speech in a heartbeat. Kidding me. But yeah, it's just. But that does not mean that there are not people out there who are of the Jewish faith who can fix a light. I'm just not one of them. And just because we can't fix a light properly doesn't mean that someone should call Dave Rothenberg. Dave Rothstein.
Donald Legreca
No. Did I. We didn't speak about this.
Peter Rosenberg
I did reach out to Melusas and what'd he say?
Donald Legreca
And he was devastated. They said they.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, that's a strong way of putting it.
Donald Legreca
No, tell us when we get back.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's break because we have to get to John Ireland too. But no, I didn't know you heard from Maloose. This is big. It is 880New York. Don Hahn and Rosenberg.

Because it's Infiniti's most luxurious full size 3 row SUV. It's full of customizable and advanced features. I'll tell you all about the great speaker system. The fact that you can take calls that say isolated to the driver's seat. So it's personal. You don't have to have the whole car, hearing your conversation. That's awesome. There's all kinds of customizable things in it as well. And by the way, so you know, my youngest daughter plays hockey and so we have tournaments to go to, we have practices to go to, and we always carpool with other families. We had three hockey bags, three girls from the team, and of course my wife, myself and my other daughter all in the infinity, all together, all comfortable going for the ride, watching some hockey. And Callie had a hat trick, by the way. She was player of the game. So that's the kind of thing I'm talking about. This is the perfect family car. So I just gave you a few of the many amazing new features available on the all new Infiniti QX80. But how about you discover you just right? In the January 9, 2025 episode of Don, Hahn & Rosenberg, hosts Donald La Greca (Don), Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg delve into pressing sports topics, particularly focusing on the College Football Playoff semifinal between Notre Dame and Penn State, and the tumultuous status of the upcoming Monday Night Football (MNF) game amid severe wildfires in Southern California. This comprehensive summary captures the essence of their discussions, notable insights, and key conclusions.
The episode begins with a brief introduction where Peter Rosenberg informs listeners that Alan Hahn is dealing with a family issue, leading to a dynamic between Don and Peter for this episode. Don mentions their schedule, highlighting coverage of the Rangers vs. Devils game at Madison Square Garden and the anticipation surrounding upcoming sports events.
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to the highly anticipated College Football Playoff semifinal between Notre Dame and Penn State, also known as the Orange Bowl.
Program Relevance and Resurgence:
Donald Legreca emphasizes the renewed competitiveness of both programs:

(03:35)
Broadcast Diversity:
Peter Rosenberg highlights the extensive coverage across various ESPN channels:
“There's so many different ways to consume the game. ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN News... every version you could possibly imagine.”
(02:14)
Key Players and NFL Implications:
Discussion revolves around standout players like Saquon Barkley and Ishmael Hyman, their performances, and potential NFL careers. Don questions Aaron Rodgers' future:
“If he has a couple of big games here, maybe he'll change his mind. And if he does, does he get into the conversation with Sanders, with Ward as a possible option for the Giants?”
(03:58)
Evolving Perspectives on College Football:
Peter Rosenberg reflects on his changing views:
“I've been hard on college football a lot. ... This is what the point was. This is meaningful.”
(05:10)
The core focus shifts to the controversial decision to hold the MNF game between the Minnesota Vikings and LA Rams at SoFi Stadium amidst ongoing wildfires with zero percent containment.
