Oh, I've never been better, honestly. How are you?

[Peter Rosenberg]

I'm, I'm fantastic. I'll take that for what it is. How, how does it feel this, this time around? Does, does, does winning a title, a world title, ever get boring for you?

[CM Punk]

No, no, not at all. You know, that means you're at the top of your game. It means you're the best in the world, means there's pressure on you. And I feel like I operate much better at a higher level when I have that pressure on me. So it's. It, it seems it doesn't get any easier, but it gets sweeter. Like I really am proud of this, honestly.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Now we, we had Sammy on several days after won the title, I guess the Friday after Saudi and one of the ways I complimented him and said I enjoyed his win was that, you know, seeing guys like him on top of. And I put him in a category of people like yourself and like Bryan Danielson, guys who were true students of the business who absolutely love professional wrestling. And maybe when they first started, people doubted could make it to the mountaintop. I thought Sammy's title reign was sort of another thing like that obviously was not short lived. And you guys had an incredible match in which you came away and as champion. Did any part of you feel for Sammy's reign being so short? Did you say anything to him about that? Obviously you know what it's like to have very long title reigns. I don't think you've ever had one remotely that short. But did you have any sort of conversation with him about that?

[CM Punk]

I had one that was much shorter. I had one that was like, maybe two minutes long. I understand.

Oh, yeah.

[CM Punk]

I understand how Sammy feels.

[Alan Hahn]

Yeah.

[CM Punk]

I don't have anything to apologize for. It's. The fantastic thing about sports in general is people have their favorites, and they will root for them, and they live or die by that. So when your team stinks and you're.

[Alan Hahn]

You're.

[CM Punk]

You're still pulling for him, and you still have that hope. I know what it feels like. I'm a. I'm a Chicago Cubs fan, but I. I don't have anything to apologize to Sammy about. If he wants a title shot, he can come get one. I'll gladly give him a rematch.

[Alan Hahn]

I want to. You mentioned the Cubs, and that's something I want to ask you about because it's relative to something that I just experienced. And I know you're a huge sports fan, obviously a big Cubs fan, a big Chicago sports fan. So when 2016 happened and the. You know, that. That drought ended, the. Almost the. The. The unthinkable happened, I'm sure. Right. Like, I just went through that with the Knicks, and them winning an NBA championship was something that, for many fans, it's like, I'm never going to see this in my lifetime. So when you. When you see the Knicks win, is that something that for other franchises, especially one you root for in the Cubs that have been through so much in so many years and how they were almost the, you know, the lovable Cubbies who just were never going to win, like, did. Is there an appreciation that you have for another team, another franchise and fan base that has been through it?

[CM Punk]

I love to see it. Now, obviously, I'm a Chicago Bulls guy, of course. Yeah, we had a dynasty, you know. You know, I'm a Chicago Blackhawks guy. We had a dynasty. And I think what happens is after your teams win and you win multiple championships, you wind up paying the price for it, you know, and then there's the rebuild and then the retool and all that.

Man, I'm stoked to be at the Garden tomorrow night tagging with Cody, and it's going to be kind of like a celebration of the Knicks winning the championship and the fans being able to attend a parade, come to the Garden, wear your Knicks colors. You know, like, I'm going to be wearing Knicks colors because I want to celebrate that team winning that for the fan base. I think it's an amazing thing. I'm happy to see it.

[Alan Hahn]

What'd that feel like for you to watch the Cubs win the World Series? Like, was there that moment where it Hit you. Did you get emotional? What was that like?

[CM Punk]

So emotional. I was crying my eyes out. I was sitting. I was there. I was in Cleveland. So I got to see it live. And when it happened, it's just the closest thing to an out of body experience I think I've ever had. You know, like, you dream of it, you hope for it. You know, people that were older, that had passed away, that didn't get to see it. There's so many things going through your head and you're watching Bryant throw the ball to Rizzo and Rizzo holding his hands in the air, and it's just like you can't believe it. And then you look down and your wife's playing Pokemon on her phone.

She's an adopted Chicagoan, you know, it's different. It's different.

[CM Punk]

I, I love her to death. And that's exactly why I love her, because she's not going to change.

I think it's brilliant. She just goes to sports games with me for the food and, you know, the activities.

[Alan Hahn]

I'll tell you what. So my wife is more of like, she's a hockey fan. She loves hockey and basketball. Just never really can. Like, she just, you know, she knows that was the biggest last 20 years for me. That's what I've covered. But I met her actually through hockey, believe it or not. So it's always been her thing. Our kids play hockey, so she's never really watched. She. She's actually. Yeah, she grew up a Rangers fan.

Okay.

[CM Punk]

And so you got to see that 94. I don't think she's ever going to see it again.

[Alan Hahn]

I always tell her that. But. But it's funny how, like, I've been. I've been doing Knicks games for years and you know, like, she'll have to remind her, hey, I have a game tonight. Like, she's not following, but this run, it's amazing that she's text me, like never used to text me during games. Now she's like, you know, that's a foul on Brunson. They don't give him calls. Like, she. I'm looking at her like, whoa, whoa, you're suddenly into this? Like, I found that to be. That was actually endearing and also part of me. It was like, I like you better when you're apathetic. I don't.

[CM Punk]

Well, it's the benefit of having a big, large market team, you know, march towards the championship. I think it gets nation.

[Alan Hahn]

Everybody into it.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Yeah. I mean, this Knicks thing became gigantic, and obviously it's already been promoted that Jalen Brunson, at least Jalen Brunson. I sort of have a hunch there will be more than Jalen Brunson, but at least Jalen Brunson will be representing the. The Knicks at MSG for Saturday night's main event tomorrow night. A few tickets still available. Um, how would you. You were just gone for a little while, obviously. You know, the second CM Punk is not on television for five minutes, the Internet starts going crazy, and I never thought very much of any of it except. Have you watched wrestling recently? People go away for a little while, people come back, and of course you're back and you're now world champion. How was the time off? How was it coming back? And are you as enthusiastic and as pumped and as at this stage of this WWE run as you were in the first year of the comeback?

[CM Punk]

Yeah, in my business, in this company, for me to be able to say that I had time off and it wasn't due to injury or a surgery is remarkable. And it was the first time in my career I had time off without having to go get a surgery or be injured. I just hung out with my wife. You know, I had a. I had a. I'm not going to say a rough year. You know, suffering is relative. Like, I was heavyweight champion over on Raw for quite some time, and during that entire time I was champion, I had at least three or four people that were very close to me pass away. And each time I was at work the next day, you know, I didn't talk about it publicly. I showed up partially because it helped me. You know, being here amongst my road family and being able to connect with the fans on that level helped me get through it. But there was still some stuff I needed to process. So, you know, my time away was just to kind of reset. And one day away from my wife is one day too many, you know, so, like, I been with her, like, every single day. And now that I'm back, I'm champ and I'm on the road and I'm as full time as full time gets. If you're upset that I was mourning some. Some dead friends, I think you check yourself.

[Alan Hahn]

That's a new problem.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Yeah, we should.

[CM Punk]

We should celebrate people taking. Taking some time for themselves.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Well, especially you, of all people. You were such an advocate. You know, when you left, obviously was a very different time. You were very outspoken about the things that you did not like. And it is a Remarkably different place. And it is interesting that people don't see it that way and take the moment to celebrate that. Yeah, I'm sure people notice some certain corporate things that they can point a finger at and say, I don't like the logo in the ring and I don't like this or that. And everyone has the right to do that.

Like, we all love this thing. Think whatever you think, but you got to appreciate the improvements that have been made to the well being and lifestyle of the, of the workers.

[CM Punk]

And of course there's always going to be more improvements that need to be made, but it's, it's a far cry from what it used to be that that's for certain. I can tell people that it's a different place and they can either take my word for it, they can see for themselves, you know, like, I mean, even April, my wife, you know, like, I couldn't convince her. I didn't even try. Like, this place is different. It's something that you have to witness and experience for yourself.

[Alan Hahn]

With that in mind, I saw something that you said and I've been trying to find a reason. So I want to ask you how you did it and what it, you know, what it's done for you. And that's simply saying, I'm done with Twitter. You know, like, Peter brought up what people are saying, right. And how you just basically like, I'm, I don't need it, I don't want it. I feel like in our business, we need it for promotional things. There was a time where a lot of us wanted to use it as a way to get our voice out there, get our opinion out there and all that stuff. Then you just realize that so many things, even if you said something nice, there's always going to be miserable people to make it miserable. So what brought you to the real people anymore?

[CM Punk]

I honestly think it's like bot farms and they just attach onto whatever the hell an algorithm is, and they repeat and regurgitate what other people are saying. So it winds up just being like this cesspool of negativity. And it's pretty wild and it's pretty unhealthy.

[Don Hahn]

I.

[CM Punk]

The thing that got me to abandon Twitter was I shattered my foot and, like, I just saw somebody say, like, they were happy about it. And I just went, oh, it didn't hurt my feelings. I just went, oh, this is not a comment that I would have seen if I didn't look at Twitter. So I'm. I'm just gonna stop looking at this yeah.

[Alan Hahn]

Yeah.

[Peter Rosenberg]

And I read, though, that you still have been finding yourself on your phone too much. So what are you doing on your phone too much with the social media gone? Or at least less of it?

[CM Punk]

Words with Friends.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Okay, that's okay.

[CM Punk]

Researching coffee shops, gyms in the cities that I'm flying to. I am on Instagram and I'm constantly sending friends videos of dogs and seals are big on my Instagram algorithm. All kinds of crazy animals. Food is a big thing, too. And I read a lot of scripts for outside activities.

[Peter Rosenberg]

None of this sounds unhealthy. This all sounds pretty good. Yeah.

[CM Punk]

But when you get that alert that says, like, oh, you were on your phone, like, six hours a day this week, or whatever it is, I feel like that's Apple shaming me. I'm on the phone too much.

[Alan Hahn]

You know, imagine Apple telling you you're using your. My product too much and shaming you into using it. Where everything else is always about drawing you in more. But that sounds so relatable, because my kids are, like, tired of me sending them Instagram reels that I think are funny, and they don't find them funny, but I'm like, oh, they're going to love this.

[CM Punk]

My wife probably doesn't find the stuff I sent her.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Well, who sends more? Who sends more videos to each other? You to AJ or AJ to you?

[CM Punk]

It's definitely me.

[Peter Rosenberg]

You know. You know that you are breaking the norm, right? Like, the. The going joke in the algorithm is videos of wives just sending husbands, like, a hundred. My wife sends me 40 a day, and then punk. When I don't respond to them, she will make me sit in bed with her and watch them with her.

[Alan Hahn]

Oh, my God, that's so true.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Like, we gotta go through these together now. You gotta see this work. Did you not watch it?

[Alan Hahn]

Oh, come watch it with me. Oh, my God. All right, let's watch it. It's such a real thing. Hey, so performing again, you performed at some amazing venues, right? I always ask this too, because, again, I'm privy to it and it means the world to me. So. And I love asking anybody who's in the entertainment world and the sports world about this is. What is it to you to. To perform at the Garden?

[CM Punk]

I think it's still everything. You know, I always say it's funny when you're. When you're a pro wrestling fan and you get into the business, it's always the Garden. The Garden. There's a lot of famous buildings in pro wrestling on a couple of different continents, but The Garden, the world's most famous arena for a reason. A lot of great wrestling history has happened under that roof, but, man, New York City, listen, the first time I saw Madison Square Garden on my calendar, when I got here, 2006, maybe, I was very excited. The second time I saw Madison Square Garden on my calendar, I was not excited. You gotta pay to park, you gotta hotel fees. And right now, like, World Cup's going on.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Oh, yeah.

Yeah.

It's a pain in the ass to get into the building. It's a pain in the ass to get out of the building. Like, all the. All the real world stuff that almost kind of like dims it a little bit. But once you're in there and you hear the roar of the crowd and the show starts and the lights dim and when your music hits, forget about it. Like, yeah, I'll pay for parking all day long. The magic that happens when you're at the Garden, and I think everybody kind of ties their boots on a little bit tighter. You know, I think you. You have to show out at the Garden just because of the past and the history, you know, it's. It's a special, special place.

[Alan Hahn]

You shouldn't have to pay for parking at this point of your career. At that point.

I have the privilege of being a very close punk. One of your biggest moments in the Garden 2011, Alberto del Rio for the championship. And if you go back and look at the video, I don't know if you ever have from that great moment, my stupid ass wearing a Redskins hat and a Hot 97 T shirt, slamming the title. One of the. One of the great punk moments in

history in the Garden. How crazy is that? Yeah, dude, that's so great.

[Peter Rosenberg]

It's, it's, it's. And, and, and.

Punk. Do you like. Do you agree with this assessment? I feel like wrestling fans in the Garden are sort of like watching a hockey game in Chicago or Toronto or Pittsburgh or the Garden, like, where you can just tell based on the way the whistle's blown and the crowd reacts, that it's a smart crowd. Is it that same way with wrestling fans in the Garden?

[CM Punk]

Yeah, I think so. And I think we have always said, you know, so goes the Garden, so goes business. You know, the fans at the Garden were for decades the barometer of where we went, you know, to the future of our business. So they're definitely on the Smarter side. But, you know, it's a generational thing, I really feel like, because they ran the garden, like, 1st and the 15th of every single month for so long. And you saw such superstars, like the ethnic superstars that really captivated what New York was as a melting pot, you know, like Pedro Morales and Bruno Sammartino. And, you know, you, you had all these, these immigrants that were coming. Wrestling was like, really, truly like a blue collar sport.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Yep.

And they came and they supported.

They saw themselves on the television, they saw themselves in the ring, and it was a representation that really, like, brought the fans there. And I think that's another special thing about our business is you can have people from all different kind of races and religions and creeds, and they can turn on the television and they can see themselves represented. And that has never been more true than what's gonna happen in Madison Square Garden. I mean, you got, you got Bailey versus Lyra. You know, Sammy, I'm sure there's a lot of kids worldwide. He's. He's a Syrian Muslim. I think you can, you know, like, there's so many people that can see themselves in the ring, and I think that encourages them to come out to the shows and, and to watch and be fans.

That is such a New York thing too, what you just said. That's perfectly.

Well, that was Chicago too, brother. Like, you know, like I, you, you walk up and down the streets in Chicago and it can be a very segregated city, but it's because people find their people and they build communities and you can't be afraid to go to those communities and, and explore and learn about other people's culture and other people's food and other people's customs. That's what makes it great. I love that there's a Little Italy and a Chinatown and, you know, I can go to Pilsen and have like the best tacos I've ever had in my life. I love experiencing all these little pockets of culture in New York or in Chicago or anywhere in the world.

And it is fascinating too, because people would. People a, don't have that appreciation of, as you mentioned, the Bruno Sammartino thing, the Pedro Morales thing. My grandparents ran from the Holocaust and had, you know, there was no Jewish character on television at that time. But my grandpa Danny, you know, he didn't understand English that well. And what he understood was Bruno Sammartino the character, the immigrant, you know, and it really is such a big thing. And I don't know if you have this experience punk I think people who don't know the wrestling business make assumptions about how wrestling fans would be and they're way off about sort of the way that pro wrestling fans see the world and just how open minded our fans are in my opinion.

I mean there's definitely some people that fit the stereotypes but yeah, more often than not you can't judge an entire fan base or an entire group of people based on one stereotype. Yeah, like pro wrestling fans to me I've always found are. They can also be hardcore sports fans and they, they're very well traveled, believe it or not. Like they, they often.

As a rookie, Cincy Red named Pete Rose dropped a fungo ball in warm ups. We sort of jeered and teased. He flashed the bird at our entire seventh grade class. What fun.

The pigeons in the rafters crapped on a kid's hot dog. Hilarious. The newbie New York jets sent starting tackle Sid Yunkelman, of course, to the LL Awards dinner. He was a. He was a big fellow. That's how I've gained a lot of weight. By the way, speaking of health. Yeah, I was in the MRI tube Today.

How's that? You like that?

I'm not a fan. No, Not a fan of the MRI tube. I was deciding whether I could do it. Yeah, the great Dr. Jay Shaw wrote me a prescription for some, like, Valium or Xanax or something if I needed it. But I didn't end up getting the prescription in time, so I just went and did it. I didn't love being in the tube. I'll find out what the results are. But I did an X ray also, Al. And this is all on my back because my back's just been hurting in general.

[Alan Hahn]

Gotcha.

[Peter Rosenberg]

And right away, the X ray tech, like, the second I finished was like, yeah, I see a few things going on here. Nothing crazy. All things that could be, you know, helped with therapy, he said. But, like, no, not mental therapy. Physical therapy.

[Alan Hahn]

Oh, okay. I didn't know the tech was.

[Peter Rosenberg]

No, no, the physical therapy. But apparently my neck. My neck is, like, completely straight. And your neck's not supposed to be completely straight. Your neck's supposed to be, like, curving

[Alan Hahn]

back, little bit of a curve.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Little bit of a curve to the back. And mine is straight.

[Alan Hahn]

Is that this thing that's happening now with people on their phones?

[Peter Rosenberg]

Well, I think in my case. Let me answer. Yes. I think with me, it's being hunched over a desk every day, But I think, yes, it's. He said they're seeing it more and more because of the phones, because people are just have their head tilted down at their phone all day.

[Alan Hahn]

Right. I can't put, like, today's a great example. So I also had just stress test today. Just the, you know, the usual thing you do once in a while just to make sure everything's working right.

Yeah, the whole thing. So it was time for me to do one. I did one this morning. And in the. In the doctor's office, it's third floor, so I can't believe it's three floors. Got on the first floor. There's only three floors. Get on with a couple, and the first thing they do. Phone comes out. It gets an elevator. I know it's a little awkward because we're all strangers, but I couldn't believe how fast they were to pull the phones out, drop their head straight down.

Oh, yeah.

And have the phone. And for whatever reason, we just do this thing now instead of holding a phone up, we hold it against our. Like they. People hold it against their bodies and

just dip the head. People with bad eyes do that a lot. I noticed that old people.

[Alan Hahn]

That's why your neck is the way it is.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Yeah, you're turned all the way in, but not what you want.

Strange. Like, I'm way too busy to talk to you, stranger. Like, I'm really busy.

But nobody talked to you. It's not like I stare at you going, hey, how's your morning? You know, I didn't do that. I just sat there. I just stood there.

People have started to use that as their way to feel like I don't have to feel like I should be polite. Even though no one expects you to be polite like that. Anyway.

[Alan Hahn]

It's such a strange.

[Peter Rosenberg]

And I just. I kept thinking it was going to get better one day, Alan. It's only getting worse.

[Alan Hahn]

No, the problem is that because adults are doing it, their kids are seeing them do it. Now kids are doing it. It's a very uncomfortable. It's a strange thing with these kids. Like, I've see it with kids, too, how the minute they're in a place like I see it with, you know, when even athletes, the minute they get in a place where they don't know anyone. I'll put my bag down and I'm waiting to go into the locker room. But I don't want to just stand here and I don't want to walk up to anybody, so I'm just gonna grab my phone and fumble with it. Like, yeah, you got some big emails you're looking at, right, Sonny? Like, come on. Like, what. What is critical that you got to get to? Nothing. But you're using it as the crutch because we can't have social connections anymore or we just can't be comfortable in silence.

[Peter Rosenberg]

Yeah. That's the main thing. No one's comfortable.

[Alan Hahn]

So it's strange, but that I saw that with adults and I see the way their heads. Their heads are bending down. So therapy.

I feel like when you stand to do a show, you have way more energy than when you're sitting.

When I did the shows from home with Bart, we weren't on any type of video vehicle. I always stood up.
