This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Don LaGreca
That sounds like heaven to me.
Alan Hahn
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers. 403 in the big city with Don Lagreca and Peter Rosenberg. I'm Alan Hahn. 800-919-3776 is the number. So we were just looking up. Is NFL Network doing this right. They're showing a little Brady versus it's got Brady Manning AFC championship game from Broncos Patriots. So sort of the throwback.
Peter Rosenberg
Of course they're warming us up this weekend. Although I got news for you.
Alan Hahn
What do you got?
Peter Rosenberg
Tom Brady and Peyton Manning aren't walking through those locker room doors. You know what I mean?
Alan Hahn
You don't think so?
Damian Woody
No, no.
Don LaGreca
Quite the opposite.
Peter Rosenberg
Not Bo Nix isn't even walking through the locker room doors.
Alan Hahn
He cannot.
Peter Rosenberg
Good lord.
Alan Hahn
But it's going to be this an interesting weekend. First and foremost on NFL News, Brian Dabel just completed a interview for the head coaching position with the Buffalo Bills. That's an interesting situation right there. Isn't it like that whole thing, how that plays out? Do they really go to him, bring him back and make him the head coach? So something to watch. But the Bills did just announce that that they have completed their head coach interview with Brian David.
Don LaGreca
I didn't think about it. Gary Myers did and tweeted it out earlier. If the Bills hire Dable to be their head coach, it would be the first Giant coach fired that was hired by another organization. Dan Reeves nearly 30 years ago. That's the last time a Giant coach was fired and rehired by another team. Was Dan Reeves by the Falcons.
Alan Hahn
It's amazing, but it's true because TC ended up. He worked for another organization but he wasn't a head coach.
Don LaGreca
Wasn't a head coach. Fossil never got another chance to be a head coach. And obviously we know the litany of guys that were fired previously.
Alan Hahn
Where did Reeves go after the Giants?
Don LaGreca
Atlanta.
Alan Hahn
So he was super bowl, you remember? So we were talking with Booger and Booger said nobody ever gets a third third time around. Right. He was talking about McCarthy.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, yeah. I mean.
Alan Hahn
All right, well, we talked with Booger yesterday. Let's talk with our good friend Damian Woody who's with us right now. And why don't we just dive right into what's happening up in Buffalo. D. Wood was firing Sean McDermott justified and all the things have now come out after all that stuff. What is happening up in Buffalo in your estimation?
Damian Woody
Yeah, I mean, listen, I look at the Sean McDermott thing. And I think Sean McDermott is an excellent coach. Obviously, he changed the culture up there in Buffalo. He's done a lot of really good things, not only on the field, but off the field in the community of Buffalo. But sometimes, you know, you hit your ceiling. And I kind of liken the situation to, you know, in a couple situations. Andy Reid in Philadelphia where he knocked on the door but he could never break through, and Tony Dungy in Tampa, where, you know, those teams in Tampa were good, but they never broke through. And then obviously Jon Gruden comes along and obviously wins the Super Bowl. So I just feel like, you know, there was, it was time for a change. Sometimes the message can get stale. You hit your ceiling. But I think that, I think what's really important now is this hire. Because going from Sean McDermott, like, you're going to have to have a hell of a hire. I don't know who that person's going to be, but there's some stuff going on in Buffalo that draw that gives me pause right now.
Don LaGreca
You know, we asked Booger McFarlane yesterday about Mike McCarthy, like, what is it about McCarthy? Almost an identical resume to Harbaugh. Couldn't seem to get a sniff there. I mean, wouldn't he be a good fit in Buffalo? He's worked with big time quarterbacks before, won a Super Bowl. Or do you think Dable would be a better choice?
Damian Woody
Oh, man. Like, listen, I think, I think McCarthy would probably to be, you know, the better choice because again, you go from Sean McDermott and I. Brian Dable is a friend of mine. But going from Sean McDermott to Brian Day Ball, how do you sell that to the fan base? Can you really sell that to the fan base? I can say what Mike McCarthy, he's one super Bowl. You can say a lot of different things about Mike McCarthy. He's, he's developed quarterbacks, he's won a Super Bowl. He was pretty successful in Dallas, so. And in Green Bay. So I think that would have a. That would be an easier sell in Buffalo than Brian Dabel, in my opinion.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, we're obviously reaching the end of the conversation now. It's Thursday, but we haven't, we haven't spoken to you yet. Damien did.
Damian Woody
The answer is no. The answer is no. I have, I have. Not yet. No. That wasn't what I was going to.
Peter Rosenberg
Ask, but thank you for hurting our feelings. I was going to ask you catch your interception, but now you just threw it in our face. You still, you still.
Alan Hahn
I know you know, it's on his mind. So he knows.
Damian Woody
I've been sweating this for a while, man. Like, I've been sweating.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Damian Woody
I'm like, you know what? Let me just. Let me just get ahead of it now.
John Harbaugh
Yeah.
Damian Woody
And so that's. That's just what I did. I just got ahead of it.
Alan Hahn
I respect that.
Peter Rosenberg
I respect it. I respect it. I think Don. Don's finished with you. He might have checked out, but it's okay.
Don LaGreca
Rephrase the question. Do you respect. And the answer would have been the same. No, I don't.
Alan Hahn
No.
Don LaGreca
And the fact is that you are a liar, too, because you're not sweating this one bit. Because if you. If you had any sweat over it, you would have watched it. You have no intention of watching it. You have no intention. And I'm gonna keep asking. I'm gonna keep asking, knowing what the answer is going to be. Bad guy.
Alan Hahn
This is sad.
Damian Woody
You know, I'm so. I'm so hurt that I disappointed Don, but some of this stuff you got to take up with my wife, man. Like, no, it's. It's. It's like. It's like that, man.
Peter Rosenberg
It's like, listen. Don't know.
Damian Woody
There's no hold me hostage.
Peter Rosenberg
Listen, there's no Don. I say this respectfully. There's no one more whipped than Don, okay? The man can't make any free choices in his life. But if you asked him to watch a movie, he's watching the movie.
Alan Hahn
Yep.
Don LaGreca
That's the bottom line. Or maybe very early on, you could have just been honest and say, listen, there's no shot. I'm watching this movie, guys. I've got no time. I've got no life. I've got football to watch. My wife dominates the tv. You could have been honest up front. You're like, okay, I'll watch it, knowing damn well you were never going to watch.
Peter Rosenberg
This is so tough, man. Well, Damon, we're going to keep this thing going because I want to see. I think one of these weeks, he's going to surprise us. He's going to jump on the air and just start quoting Napoleon Dynamite.
Alan Hahn
Right?
Peter Rosenberg
But until then, let me ask you.
Don LaGreca
Was it vote for Pedro T shirt next time?
Peter Rosenberg
Was it a catch or an interception in your eyes?
Damian Woody
I actually agree with the call, to be honest with you. And I know in the. We don't know. We don't know what a catch is, but according to the letter of the law, that was an interception because he didn't finish the process of the catch. Like, Literally, he. It was bang, bang when he hit the ground and the defender from, from the Denver Broncos had the ball. And so like, to me, it's just, we can cry and moan and do all this stuff. But he didn't finish the catch.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, that's how Don. Now you've won Don back over and you've lost me. I'm a catch guy. I just. You know what, you know what it was for me.
Alan Hahn
Everybody has a different opinion on it, which is.
Peter Rosenberg
I know it is. It is so split.
Don LaGreca
Right.
Alan Hahn
Booker said it wasn't.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Booger's with Booger's team catch.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
For me, the problem, Damian, was, was I can't sit here and tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt it was a catch, obviously, because it ended in the defender's hands. What I can tell you is, and this is where me and Don really disagree, your eyeballs as referees are not good enough to have been 1000% sure of that. That they forced the coach to call a timeout that should have been looked at for a couple of minutes instead of them just walking right back out to the line. That was my biggest issue, the whole thing.
Damian Woody
I totally agree with that. And I thought it was malpractice by the refs in the NFL that that play was too big not to have some type of replay at that very moment. And the fact that Sean McDermott had to blow a timeout, just so they look at it, that is egregious. Agreed. And I think for a bigger, a bigger point, I think the NFL, NFL has an issue with, with refereeing right now.
Peter Rosenberg
They do.
Damian Woody
I think that's something that they, they really need to address because I think it's going to be a sticking point, sticking point with fans.
Alan Hahn
Well, let's get into the games this weekend, if we could.
Anthony Pusich
I'll move on.
Alan Hahn
D. Wood. Yeah. I want to ask you about a rematch. Anytime division opponents face each other in the playoffs, but especially at a, you know, this, the penultimate game, Rams, Seahawks, and we remember how wild of a finish that was back in December when they were last in Seattle together on a Thursday night. Like, do you expect this to be another one of those, you know, high scoring, high flying games? Do you, do you think Sam Darnold can orchestrate another type of game like this against the Rams defense?
Damian Woody
I think he can. I will say this, the Seahawks aren't asking Sam Donald to do a lot because they've been running the ball really well. And so, you know, if you can minimize the chances of turnovers by playing Complimentary football, running the football, playing great defense and your quarterback just got to go out there and manage and not turn it over. You know, they're a hard team to beat. Now with that being said, you're playing a team for the third time within your division. You're not, you're not fooling. Either side is not fooling. They're not fooling each other. You've seen it all. They know the personnel, pretty much the plays that they're going to run. It's just going to be who's going to out execute the other team. And I think playing up in Seattle with that crowd noise and that defense, that's going to be a tough, tough place for the Rams to get a victory.
Don LaGreca
You give Denver a shot.
Damian Woody
Of course I give him a shot. I give them a shot because they're playing at home and they have that defense. They have a fantastic defense that can get after the quarterback. They got guys that can take away the football. And so when you have that playing for you, you're going to have a shot. Now obviously the quarterback situation is definitely not ideal for Denver, but again, if you just play turnover free, you will have an opportunity to win that, to win that football game.
Peter Rosenberg
This, to me, this playoff is sort of opened up the question, I guess we've been talking about a lot with the hiring of Harbaugh as well, because I don't know if you saw men, but the, the win total for the Giants went up to eight and a half when they got Harbaugh. And this is a team that, you know, cannot win more than four games in a season it seems. So. We were thinking so much about quarterbacks and Josh Allen and then it got me to thinking, is Sean Payton the most important player left in this playoffs? And is he, is he the man so much so that he could will this team to victory against New England?
Damian Woody
Well, I mean, listen, at the end of the day, Sean, Sean Payton's not on the field. The players ultimately got go out there and execute. But I will say like he's going to have to earn his money now because you know, you're an offensive minded guy and you've done a lot of really good things, but now you're going up against this Patriots team as well. Listen, when we talk about the Patriots, not all people talk about the fact that the Patriots have one of the best defense in the league. Yes, the Denver Broncos have a great defense, but the Patriots defense isn't a slouch either. So how are you, Sean Payton, going to manage your Your backup quarterback, Jared sent him. How are you going to get him to play good for. No, get playing good football knowing that he's going to be. He's playing opposite a potential league MVP in Drake.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, that's exactly right. That's what makes us a very, very tough spot. What do you think's the most exciting potential game left for Super Bowl?
Damian Woody
You asked me if what kind of super bowl matchup? Yeah, I want, I want to see New England Seattle like, I want to see New England Seattle like, I think. I think those are the two best teams remaining right now.
Alan Hahn
Does it make like, does it blow your mind as we talk so much about parody in the NFL that the Chiefs of the Patriots have been in a championship game for the last, what, 15 years? That's crazy.
Damian Woody
It is crazy because like you talked about, we talk about parity all the time and here we are and the same two teams have basically dominated the afc. So I love that we're getting fresh new blood. But it looks like the Patriots are back at it again. Once, once again.
Alan Hahn
It's like the NCAA tournament. It's different players, but the blue bloods are always going to be there. You always expect to see them somewhere in the tournament. All right, so we mentioned John Harbaugh, D. Wood, and he had a press conference and Peter felt like the press conference was grade worthy, B plus.
Peter Rosenberg
I thought it was very good, which.
Alan Hahn
He says is very good. But I want to ask you, D. Wood, if you heard him say this, I'm going to play it for you. You got to tell me whether you're. You're one of the guys that would stay or one of the guys that would go.
John Harbaugh
We need guys that love everything about football. They love the games, they love the practices, they love the weightlifting, they love the meetings, they love the dining hall. You know, they love every part of football, man. And if you love football, guys, if you love football, you're going to want to be here, you're going to want to drive in that parking lot every single day. You're going to want to walk in.
Don LaGreca
That through those doors, you're going to.
John Harbaugh
To walk up in those halls, you're going to want to get in front of that tape and watch tape every single day because you're going to be around a bunch of guys that love what you love. They love football because that's what we're going to be doing. Football, football, all the time, every day. And if there's guys, you know around that don't love football, Joe, we're probably Going to let those guys go play somewhere else. Because if you don't love football, you're not going to love it here. Because we'll be doing football. That's the plan.
Alan Hahn
All right. Football.
Peter Rosenberg
They love football.
Don LaGreca
He loves football.
Alan Hahn
Do you love football?
Damian Woody
Well, listen, some guys don't love football. They love what the game of football can do for them. And so, like, I like, I love it. I love what John Harbaugh says. Like, we need a bunch of dudes up in here. We need a bunch of guys that love the game, that sleep the game, eat the game, all of that stuff. Because once you get a bunch of guys like that, that's how you build a winning culture. So, yeah, like, I'm with that. Guys who love what the game has done for them, get them the hell out of the building. And make sure you. You're filling up the building with guys who just loves the game.
Alan Hahn
So you had to. And I won't ask you to name names unless you want to play with guys that didn't love football. And I would think anybody in a sport like that that's around that doesn't love the game like, that much as you just heard what Harbaugh said about. You love coming to the practice. You got to love watching film. You got to love just sitting in the cafeteria. You got to love it all. That's dangerous. Did you have guys where you looked and you're like, he does not love this. You can tell. And how did you feel about it?
Damian Woody
Oh, absolutely. I mean, I think everyone who's played has been around guys who love what the game has done for them. Not necessarily loving the game of football. And, you know, that's just the nature. Nature of the beast. You're going to have guys like that. The whole point of it is, like, you want to make sure that you, you know, get enough guys who love the game of football that you ultimately weed out those guys and they. And they move on elsewhere, man. But, yeah, man, there's guys that get caught up in, you know, the money, the attention, and all the wrong thing. All the wrong things that. That at the end of the day, doesn't even matter. Like, when you win, everything else will come with it. And I think there are some guys out here that. That prioritize the wrong thing. Instead of winning, they would always get.
Alan Hahn
To talk to you. Enjoy the games this weekend, and we'll talk to you next week.
Peter Rosenberg
We hope you prioritize, you know, film, at least.
Alan Hahn
Uncle Rico.
Don LaGreca
Our friendship.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, and our friendship.
Alan Hahn
I do.
Damian Woody
I do. Prioritize the friendship. And I'm just. I'm not going to say anything else about Napoleon Dynamite. I'm just gonna. I'm gonna surprise you guys. So I'm gonna just leave it at that.
Peter Rosenberg
All right? All right. All right. Well, it would be a surprise.
Alan Hahn
Appreciate you, man.
Don LaGreca
Tune in next week.
Peter Rosenberg
He won Don back, though, with the interception.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
It didn't take.
Alan Hahn
He sided with Don.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. That's all.
John Harbaugh
Once.
Alan Hahn
Once he did that, we're all easily fought.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm rooting.
Don LaGreca
I take him as they come, you.
Alan Hahn
Know, that's all it's about.
Peter Rosenberg
Don's rooting for Don.
Alan Hahn
It's about that.
John Harbaugh
And that's what we're gonna be doing, football all the time, every day, so.
Peter Rosenberg
So real quick. I'm glad you played that. We have about a minute here before we break.
Alan Hahn
Every day.
Peter Rosenberg
Just every day, every stinking day. I do want to say this.
Alan Hahn
It's coming out of your ears.
Peter Rosenberg
So, like, in hearing that again, though, I really do think it's funny. It's a funny clip, and I'm sure it comes from a sincere place.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
But I really don't think that, like, I sound crazy if I think that even just clips like that where he's kind of just going on with these somewhat silly football isms.
Alan Hahn
Do you hear him at the end?
Peter Rosenberg
Kind of brings you down to a B for me.
Alan Hahn
When you hear him at the end.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
At the very end of the clip. He chuckles. Yeah. He knows what he was doing.
Peter Rosenberg
So he knows he's being a goof.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. I can't fast forward it because I don't want to play the whole 36 seconds. But at the very end, as he's done, he's like. He knows. He just said football 10 times.
Peter Rosenberg
So, Anthony, you loved it. You said you.
Anthony Pusich
I couldn't disagree with you more, Peter.
Peter Rosenberg
Why?
Anthony Pusich
The last 24 hours have shown you. I don't think even we understand how bad this is. You think it's easy to say, we want guys in this building that love football, and we think, well, duh, and John Harbaugh's going, no, there are guys in this building that either don't know football or don't love football, and we need to get rid of those people.
Peter Rosenberg
But how could he?
Alan Hahn
Haven't you noticed that already? They've already starting to make changes within the organization. Have you? Look, we. Our beloved Anthony Pusick. We love him. We do.
Don LaGreca
Right?
John Harbaugh
How?
Peter Rosenberg
Doesn't make him out of sight.
Alan Hahn
How broken was he during the football season?
Peter Rosenberg
Completely. And he's been every broke.
Alan Hahn
He's broken during the Rangers season.
Peter Rosenberg
He's broken during every season.
Alan Hahn
Rangers, all of it. Have you seen his attitude involving the Giants over the last couple of days?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, he's buying in.
Alan Hahn
He's all in and he's buying in.
Peter Rosenberg
No, he's in and he loves that they're firing people because he said, Anthony.
Alan Hahn
Tell him what you told me this morning because we had to go side chat because we knew you guys always side chat. No, we had to because the phone buzzing, especially with Don on the west coast.
Anthony Pusich
Listen, on Sunday when John and Peter were going back and forth, I thought to be like, hey, guys, a little too much text.
Alan Hahn
Okay, you guys, there's too much camaraderie.
Anthony Pusich
And like, and people liking each other in this chat. We should probably dial back for the record.
Peter Rosenberg
Hold on. So this is. Now you brought it up.
Alan Hahn
I'm way too.
Peter Rosenberg
Don just.
Don LaGreca
He overdid it.
Peter Rosenberg
No, because. Let me explain.
Anthony Pusich
No, no, no, no.
Peter Rosenberg
Me and. Me and John jumped in in the middle of like a football moment that the entire sports world is watching. Oh, they're going back and forth. Alan and Anthony will have a full on podcast, you know, at 2:30 about God knows what.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
This is a different kind of conversation.
Anthony Pusich
Podcast for 500 people for three years.
Alan Hahn
Yep.
Peter Rosenberg
So why not do it for four on our. On our group chat?
Alan Hahn
Why not?
Anthony Pusich
Listen, Peter, you won't hear from me helping.
Alan Hahn
That's not.
Don LaGreca
See, this is what happens with Anthony now.
Alan Hahn
He just completely records for the record.
Peter Rosenberg
That's why he's so in on what the Giants are doing. He wants destruction. So let's see what he lives for.
Anthony Pusich
What would you like?
Alan Hahn
Oh, hang on. I want to get back on track because now we're all just yelling at each other. But you said something in our sidebar that I found to be. That's exactly what. So the Giants have started making moves like John Harbaugh has looked at. Not the front office, but the entire office. And they've already started making decisions on some coaches and personnel. A trainer who's been there for 45 years making some moves. People that have been there forever and, and saying how very doge of him. We're all set. Well, but what he's saying is though, is we're gonna make some changes here. And Anthony, what you said about what if he didn't do any changes? Right. You'd be more concerned.
Anthony Pusich
Well, there's a couple things. One, if he didn't make any changes, said, yeah, this all looks good. I'd be A little concerned. Second thing is, everybody thinks that when John Harbaugh said, me and Joe are on the same page, we're getting along great, I might actually agree with him, because I bet Joe Shane was sitting in meetings with John Harbaugh one on one, going, I got to tell you, man, I can't. This guy, I know he's been here forever. I don't like this guy, and I can't get rid of him. John loves him. Steve Tisch loves him. I can't do it. And John goes, why don't you let me worry about that? Gone.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Anthony Pusich
Red Wedding. Came of thriving.
Peter Rosenberg
At the Red Wedding. I don't recall at the Red Wedding, them giving them other jobs and moving them to a different room. It's not exactly the same thing, but.
Anthony Pusich
That was also clarified, Peter. They didn't give him a different. Ronnie Barnes is still going to be the VP of the training staff.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Anthony Pusich
It's just that there's going to be a new head trainer.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. That's what I'm saying. It's Red Wedding.
Alan Hahn
He ain't.
Anthony Pusich
He ain't here anymore.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, he's gone. Remember how Rex Ryan came in and brought a lot of Baltimore people with him? He brought a lot of Ravens people with him because he wanted that Raven's blood in the building. Harbaugh wants to do sort of the same thing. He's already being told, well, you can't talk to any of our coaches. But they won't let him bring lateral move coaches over with him. So that's not happening. But he did tell the defensive coaching staff, we're good.
Peter Rosenberg
I know we got a break. We're talking about two separate points, though. Anthony is happy about the bloodbath, and he should be.
Alan Hahn
Oh, he's happy.
Damian Woody
No, no, no.
Alan Hahn
Yes, he is.
Peter Rosenberg
No, don't change it. He wants changes in. I get it. That's what I'm saying. Is this started about the press conference? The only thing I'm arguing with Anthony about is the mumbo jumbo football. Love football. That had nothing to do with cutting people.
Anthony Pusich
Perfect way.
Peter Rosenberg
That's two separate things.
Alan Hahn
We have that guy Thursday coming up, but here's John Harbaugh at the end. Great job by Jacob here. Listen. You hear the chuckle? He knows what he's doing here.
John Harbaugh
Let those guys go play somewhere else, because if you don't love football, you're not gonna love it here because we'll be doing football. That's the plan.
Alan Hahn
All right. He knows I just.
Peter Rosenberg
Either that or he's just out of his gourd? It depends.
Alan Hahn
I don't think outside of his gourd.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know. I read his note when he left Baltimore. No, I listen, it's a very good hire. I'm very excited about it. I'm not going to tell you guys it's an A plus because it was a B plus.
Alan Hahn
All right?
Peter Rosenberg
That's the bottom line. The Stone Cold said so.
Alan Hahn
See if he changes his grade by the end of next season.
Peter Rosenberg

Alan Hahn
Or know that one person I'm here with, my family who can't help but be. He's not cool.
Peter Rosenberg
His voice is weird. He's kind of a dork. His brother's a tool. His girlfriend's annoying that guy.
Don LaGreca
I didn't know it was banner night.
John Harbaugh
We won't be out for that.
Alan Hahn
It's time for that Guy Thursday. Hey, guys, anyone want to play some ball with Don Han and Rosenberg?
Commercial Narrator
He's just being that guy.
Alan Hahn
So it's that Guy Thursday. And I don't know if this counts as a that guy, but it's sort of a being that guy comes full circle. I think that's probably the best way I could put it, right, because as we all know, on Monday we had a. An epic national championship, right? Kurt Signetti, who's the head coach at Indiana, who has done something remarkable with basketball school turning into a football school and 15, 0 national champion. But you remember a few years ago when he said, I win. Google me, right? Which sounded like that guy kind of thing to say, because in everywhere else he was. As a head coach, he did win. But it's one of those, like, where. You know what I mean? So Anthony went to Google and he googled Kurt Signetti. Okay, you want to read for me what it says at the very top of the page? At the top of Google, when you.
Peter Rosenberg
Type above everything in a place where you'd normally never see words, it says. It says, yup, he won.
Alan Hahn
Go ahead and Google it, folks. Those who might be near a computer, have a phone in your hand. Whatever it is, go ahead and Google it. Go to Google, though, and type in his name. C, I, G, N, E, T, T, I. And it says.
Peter Rosenberg
It drops down. Yep, he won.
Alan Hahn
So he was being that guy when he said, I win. Google me. And he won. Now Google said, yep, he won. He won.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, you have to admit that's.
Alan Hahn
That's kind of cool, right?
Peter Rosenberg
And also that guy.
Alan Hahn
I love it.
Peter Rosenberg
Can it be both?
Alan Hahn
It's. That's why I'm asking. He was being that guy. But the fact that. That now it actually says it is phenomenal, man.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm just. I'm just looking up his overall stats. This guy. I mean, it is pretty inspirational. This was IUP, is where he started. The hell's IUP?
Alan Hahn
Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right.
Alan Hahn
That's Division 2.
Peter Rosenberg
IUP.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, Division 2, that's right.
Peter Rosenberg
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Alan Hahn
That's right.
Peter Rosenberg
He was at IUP from 2011 to 2016.
Alan Hahn
Yep.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, 2011. That's 15 years ago. So he was late. He was in his late 40s already when he got that job. Did that for six years. So you're 49, you get your first college head coaching job. At 49, you go to IUP and you win. There he was 53 and 17.
Alan Hahn
Think about it.
Peter Rosenberg
At IUP.
Alan Hahn
Indiana, University of Pennsylvania, Penn. And then he goes to the actual Indiana University.
Peter Rosenberg
That's crazy, too. Didn't think about that.
Alan Hahn
Isn't that funny?
Peter Rosenberg
2017, he goes to Elon College.
Alan Hahn
Sure. Elon.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, I know. Well, because underachieving kids from my high.
Alan Hahn
School would go there.
Peter Rosenberg
I say that respectfully.
Alan Hahn
Okay. Respect.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I added respectfully. Don, when you say respectfully.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. You know, when you say no offense. Yeah.
Don LaGreca
You mean offense.
Peter Rosenberg
So at elon, he was 8 and 4, and then 6 and 5. And then in 19, he ends up at James Madison. Stays there for five years. And over that time, at James Madison, he was 52 and 9.
Alan Hahn
Right. Keep in mind, in between, he did spend some time at Alabama working under Bama. Nick Saban.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, there's not really any time.
Anthony Pusich
2007 to 2010, before he got head coach, he was a wide receivers coach and recruited a man named Julio Yones.
Peter Rosenberg
I've heard of Julio Yon.
Alan Hahn
Pretty good.
Peter Rosenberg
So. So, okay, so that's important.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
It led to getting the IUP job.
Alan Hahn
Yes, yes. Right. He wanted to be a head coach. So that was his first opportunity.
Peter Rosenberg
52 and 9 at James Madison. And he's just grinding Indiana.
Alan Hahn
Just grinding. But. So he's introduced at Indiana, right? It was.
Peter Rosenberg
Did he say, I'm here with my family?
Alan Hahn
So signing day press conference, December 20, 2023. And that's when he uttered those.
Damian Woody
Who are you talking about?
Don LaGreca
The high school guys, the transfers, Who.
Peter Rosenberg
All of the above.
Don LaGreca
I mean, how do you. It's pretty. Yeah, it's pretty simple.
Commercial Narrator
I win.
Don LaGreca
Google me.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, that. Don, that is. And then to go. I drive a Dodge to end up from that to the national championship.
Alan Hahn
I have great respect for this man.
Peter Rosenberg
Now it's. It's hard not to because.
Alan Hahn
Especially because Google decided to go. You know what I mean? We should probably acknowledge this. There you go. Have you checked the page, Don, Just so you can confirm that.
Anthony Pusich
I did.
Don LaGreca
I did. I saw it. Pretty cool. Yes, I did.
Alan Hahn
Yep. He won. So that's my. That guy.
Peter Rosenberg
Don, do you have a guy?
Don LaGreca
Yeah, I'm going to stick with the same theme. Indiana football. Oh, and I'm going to call no Mark Cuban. That guy Mark Cuban was asked after the championship win, was this the most unlikely championship in American sports? His answer was ever, Ever. Even the Miracle on Ice. I don't think there's anything that compares to this.
Alan Hahn
Okay. You get that?
Don LaGreca
Really?
Alan Hahn
That lost me.
Don LaGreca
Stop it. Listen, I'm just going to file it under maybe. Maybe it's not that guy. Just. You don't know.
Alan Hahn
Well, no, he's being that guy.
John Harbaugh
He is.
Don LaGreca
Right. Because. Let me just educate people. Indiana, you know, thanks to Mark Cuban, was able to go out and get significant players, and that's why they were able to jump from basketball school, the national championship. They didn't break any rules. It's all cool. I mean, I don't. I don't love that that's what college football has become. They were a 9 1/2 point favorite in the championship game. All right, now, nobody had Indiana winning a national championship, but when you see the roster that Cuban's money was able to procure, it's not that surprising. If you want to try to find that equivalent of what Mark Cuban did with Indiana would be like, I don't know, the USA team having NHL players on its team. Oh, yeah. An all star NHL team played the Russians before the Olympics and got creamed. And then that same team took on students, as the Russian players called them students, and they beat them and then go on to beat Finland and win the gold medal. Nothing will ever touch. Listen, it's just not being a hockey guy. This is not being pro America. This is logic. There will never be an upset. There will ever compare. Don't even utter. Don't even have the conversation. Don't tweet me and say, what about Super Bowl 3? What about the Giants beating the Patriots?
Alan Hahn
No.
Don LaGreca
What about the Revolutionary War? Whatever you want to bring up.
Alan Hahn
Well, hold on. The Revolutionary War was. That's a massive upset.
Don LaGreca
We have no footage.
Peter Rosenberg
What about this one? Now you going team sports only, Don you on team sports only.
Don LaGreca
Don't even go Buster Douglas.
Peter Rosenberg
It has to.
Don LaGreca
Can't touch it.
Peter Rosenberg
You can't say can't touch it.
Unidentified Speaker
You can't.
Don LaGreca
I just said it.
Unidentified Speaker
You can't.
Don LaGreca
I just said it.
Alan Hahn
He just went MC Hammer on you.
Peter Rosenberg
You can't.
Don LaGreca
No, he did MC Hammer because they were both boxers. They were both professionals.
Peter Rosenberg
Was Buster Douglas. I mean, he was.
Alan Hahn
Of course he was.
Don LaGreca
He was a professional fighter.
Alan Hahn
Oh, you mean he was a professional.
Peter Rosenberg
Fighter, but it was.
Don LaGreca
He was tomato amateurs against paid professional athletes that had paid under the idea that they were in the military.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
No, no, listen, I'm just telling you, you can have your fun. You can tweet me, you can write me. You can. You can have your Fun.
Alan Hahn
Call in 800-919-3776. Bigger upset than Miracle on Ice. We dare you.
Don LaGreca
It just can't do it. I won't have it. Have your fun. What's your breath?
Alan Hahn
Oh, I'm sure we can look up the odds.
Peter Rosenberg
What?
Alan Hahn
Yeah, we can look that up.
Don LaGreca
So Mark Cuban is that guy.
Alan Hahn
So Mark Cuban. Mark Cuban's a good one for saying that when he knows. See, again, you're being that guy when you know it's not right, but you're saying it because you want to, you want to like, kind of fluff your story. And so you're going to do that even though you know, you know you're wrong to know he's wrong.
Don LaGreca
But you know what's interesting? He, he, he makes my point about the upset by going there. Like, Mark Cuban's not a hockey guy, right?
Alan Hahn
No.
Don LaGreca
And, and, but he's old enough to know, right? He's old enough to know. But I'm saying we're talking about something that, like, literally happened going on 46 years ago. It's still the go to.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
Right. So even for Mark Cuban, like, if you're going to come up with an upset, if you're going to try to go there, you always naturally go there.
Alan Hahn
Did anyone say miracle? When Indiana won the championship, when they got the interception that closed the game? Was miracle uttered no, no. A miracle championship. No, no.
Don LaGreca
You know what? The miracle. Here's the thing. You know what the miracle would have been on Monday?
Alan Hahn
What?
Don LaGreca
Had Miami won? They were the nine and a half point dog. They were the ten seed. Indiana was the one seed.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, they were. Yeah, I agree.
Don LaGreca
Now I understand he's talking about the overall.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, the fact that most losses for a college program and all that stuff.
Don LaGreca
Like, I understand he's not saying Miami was the upset. I get that.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Don LaGreca
But let's not, let's not. Again, no rules are broken. He did, he did right by his school. But let's. There's a reason why Indiana became great. If Indiana had been the typical Indiana that was never competitive and then all of a sudden won the national championship, then we could have a conversation, Right. If Boise State ever won the national championship back all those years ago on the blue field, where they go into the playoffs and get beat by 48 points to the point where they had to change the system. Please don't let Boise State back in again, then we'd have a conversation. Well, that guy.
Alan Hahn
Not that I want to disagree with you.
Don LaGreca
Interesting.
Alan Hahn
But coming up, there is one that might be in the conversation. And when I. Oh, and let's not.
Don LaGreca
Let'S not forget, I, I booked this. We got Rachel Herzog.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, Rachel Herzog. Is coming up next.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, but you have one that beats Miracle.
Alan Hahn
I don't know, but I know it'll you will absolutely blow your top when I see it.
Don LaGreca
Me getting the devil's job.
Alan Hahn
No, I would never do that to you.
Unidentified Speaker

Alan Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Peter Rosenberg
I didn't listen to anything you just said.
Alan Hahn
Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. Rachel Herzog, the terrific, the terrific talent from MSG Networks on the Devil's broadcast, who basically carries the broadcast, but you know, we'll get into that for another day, is going to join us momentarily. But before we bring her in, Don, I just wanted to offer to you one potential on the level of a miracle on ice type of thing. Are you aware of Leicester City in the Premier League?
Don LaGreca
I've heard this, yes.
Alan Hahn
5,000 to 1 odds to win the league championship and then they beat Tottenham to win the league champion.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, I remember it. And it was on the Case show. We were 26 covering this.
Alan Hahn
Remember Don, 5,000 to 1. It's like pretty massive. Were they going to get relegated or something like that? Yeah, the year before they were. They were going to get relegated. Like, come on, that's like you were about to be sent to hell and they won the whole damn thing. Don't you got to give them. If you're not letting them in the room, you got to at least acknowledge.
Don LaGreca
Them through the window because they're in the same league. What about the Miracle Mets?
Alan Hahn
They call Them Miracle Mets for a reason.
Don LaGreca
Black Cat 100 loss team to a team that wins 100 games. And as embarrassing as they were for the first seven years of their existence and then winning the World Series. Amazing.
Alan Hahn
The Mets. They look like the Mets. Remember that. Come on, that's a pretty good story.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, well, I want to argue.
Alan Hahn
More with all that aside, but yes, let's bring in the. The lovely and talented Rachel Herzog from MSG Network, who has not only got a lot of work to do on this long trip to carry a broadcast with Don Lagra on it, but now we are asking her to do something this evening as the group goes out to dinner. Don has never experienced sushi before. He has told us you are a sushi connoisseur, in fact, that you dared to have sushi in Winnipeg, of all places. So with that in mind, like, can we get an idea of what you think would be. I suggested take it slow. Little Gateway would be like California roll. Peter says no, you got to go a little bit harder than that. What would you say?
Rachel Herzog
Yeah, well, first of all, thanks for having me on, guys. This is a pleasure, of course, all of you, but this is something Don brought up when we were in Calgary, I think, and you've probably mentioned it earlier on in the year, but I didn't know that you had never even had a lick of sushi in your life. And I almost shed a tear. I've been eating sushi since I was, I think, seven years old.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, your culture.
Alan Hahn
There you go. Right? Yeah.
Anthony Pusich
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
You were raised, right.
Rachel Herzog
I was a kid in second or third grade that said my favorite food was sushi, and all the kids were like, ew, she eats raw fish. She's nasty. No, we make it at home and everything.
Peter Rosenberg
Wait, hold on. The Herzogs are chefing up sushi at home?
Alan Hahn
I love this.
Rachel Herzog
Oh, yeah. I make it in Jersey, too. It's something that once you get a rhythm with it, it is super easy to make if you take the time to do it. So. Yeah, we've been doing that our whole life. When we were growing up, if we got good grades, we'd have a big sushi night, whether we went to all you can eat or we would make it at home. So it's been a fan favorite for us, her dogs back in Minnesota.
Don LaGreca
So she's like Molly Ringwald and Breakfast Club Club. They're bringing it to school for lunch.
Alan Hahn
That's all right.
Peter Rosenberg
But Rachel, let me. Let me ask you this. So. So tonight, do you know the place you're going like, have you been there before? The place you're going tonight?
Rachel Herzog
So last year we went to this place called Miku, and it was delicious. But I'd like to try something different. I'm sitting here at the Devil's Morning Skate. I was looking up some restaurants near our hotel, trying to find the best fit for Don and his first experience.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, this is big.
Rachel Herzog
You need a wide variety, right?
Alan Hahn
Yes, yes.
Rachel Herzog
I was thinking you got to start small. The generic California roll, the crab, cucumber, avocado.
Alan Hahn
Oh, that's perfect.
Rachel Herzog
Then maybe a shrimp tempura. And then we're gonna. Don, you're gonna have to try the raw fish at some point tonight.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, listen, Rachel, here's my theory. This is what I'm saying. I think that Don. This is my respect for Don. He's never done it, but I believe if he's going to do it, wants to do it right, I think you can get to. I think he'll. I think he'll be able to do, you know, a yellow tail spicy tuna. I think he'll be fine. I really, I mean, listen, I don't. I wouldn't go eel with the guy, but I think he'll be good with the regular spicy tunas. The yellow tail shrimp tempura, certainly not a problem. I really think you'll be okay.
Rachel Herzog
Oh, yeah, I 100 agree. I know. I'm. I'm a big salmon fan and salmon is big here in Vancouver, so I think that's a must try today. I don't know. Don Roland's favorite sushi is eel. He might be forcing. Forcing your hand in that.
Don LaGreca
So now I'm being. This is not performative at all. I am, like, legit nervous about this. I'm really legit. I'm legitimately nervous.
Alan Hahn
Rachel, we need a camera on this, please.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, we need pictures.
Alan Hahn
Rachel, we're going to need post, we're going to need video, but please help me.
Don LaGreca
If this does go, send them your way.
Rachel Herzog
It's going to be on the broadcast. I already got this all.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay. There we go.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, this is going to be fun. Tomorrow, stay up late, drink your coffee. 10 o', clock, start local. But if this goes sideways, can I. Is there a steak? Is there something I can have for dinner? If this is just something that doesn't.
Peter Rosenberg
Rachel, he hasn't heard of anything on the menu. Just so you know, we were saying earlier, like, oh, you could have some, like, rock shrimp or tempura or. Or, you know, get some edamame or gyoza Nothing. Rachel, he's heard of none of it. Doesn't know anything.
Alan Hahn
Understand. So Miku. Miku is actually a Japanese restaurant. So they have steak there, right?
Rachel Herzog
Yes, yeah, I believe so. They're very well known for their sushi too. But yeah, I think we had Gabby, our social media girl for the Devils, So I think she had, like, fried rice and steak or chicken of some sort. There's always a options at these restaurants. Kind of look like a loser if you're not ordering sushi.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right. That's right.
Alan Hahn
You don't want that. Make sure you let them know, like, side eye him, like, come on, let's go, like, get in the game.
Rachel Herzog
I honestly like those basic rolls you're gonna like. I mean, if it's not raw. You like crab, right? Have you had crab?
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Don LaGreca
Crab. I can eat crab then.
Rachel Herzog
Yeah, Yeah. I think those will be just fine. I think you're gonna be pleasantly surprised. It's not overly fishy. It's not gonna smell bad. I think it's a very neutral flavor, honestly. So I think you're gonna be pleasantly surprised with the experience. And then you're gonna get your wife to try it out. I know you said she doesn't like it.
Peter Rosenberg
Before you know it. Before you know it. Before you know it, Don and Nancy jumping on the first thing, smoke into Tokyo.
Don LaGreca
I guess that's my question. Like, what, what odds would you put on? All of a sudden, I become a sushi guy?
Peter Rosenberg
You know, you guys, I love the odds. I, I honestly, I, I, I truly will be surprised if you don't come away.
Alan Hahn
You're gonna love enjoying it. At least one thing you're gonna go, I like that for.
Peter Rosenberg
He's gonna dig 100%.
Alan Hahn
You're gonna like that.
Peter Rosenberg
And now are you gonna. Rachel, are you. What's your soy sauce wasabi sort of situation? You're gonna coach him that way as well?
Anthony Pusich
Oh, yeah.
Rachel Herzog
I mean, I love everything spicy. I, Everything that I eat has red pepper flake hot sauce. You name it. All the good stuff with you, Don. You like spicy food?
Don LaGreca
Yes, yes.
Alan Hahn
You're in good hands.
Rachel Herzog
You can either put it right on the sushi, the classic way, or you can mix it in your soy sauce to make it like spicy soy sauce.
Alan Hahn
This is amazing. One thing we need to do, though, Rachel, when you guys do get back from this very, very long road trip that you guys are on, is we're gonna have to figure out a way on an off day where you can make us some sush. Come in and we have a nice meal.
Peter Rosenberg
Makes us the sushi. You want to try her sushi?
Alan Hahn
I want to see how good it is. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. I'm down for Herzog Sushi lunch.
Alan Hahn
I'm all about some Herzog Sushi. I think it'd be great as long as you're okay with it.
Rachel Herzog
Or maybe that loves to host. I love hosting family dinner. I try to do it all the time. I love to cook like it's my favorite pastime. So on my off days I'm always, always cooking something new. I'm sharing it with my neighbors across the hall in my apartment building. So you guys, we find a day you're welcome to come over, you get to meet my cats. If you don't like cats. I don't want to hear the slander and we'll have a great time.
Alan Hahn
There'll be no cat slander and we might just bring some Comrexes over over and just have do the show.
Rachel Herzog
All right, well make sure the highlight of the year.
Peter Rosenberg
Make sure you get some good video and photos and we'll all be following along on social media and on the.
Alan Hahn
Broadcast or tomorrow night.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, thank you Rachel.
Rachel Herzog
You've been a photograph every stage staring it down wide eyed mid bite and the reaction he got the whole.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, the best.
Don LaGreca
Thank you Rachel. It's been great joining the team. You've made it a lot of fun to work with and she's terrific at what she does, guys because she brings to the table as a sideline reporter. What a lot of people don't is that she played played at St. Cloud State. She knows the game, she was a defenseman. So she puts in the work and she's really made a really fun transition from radio to television for me. And we got a great team of people, you know, behind the scenes people, you know, Roland Dratch, one of the best producers in the business. Tommy. And then obviously working with Bryce and, and Kenny. But Rachel's been terrific. Thank you, Rachel.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks Rachel.
Alan Hahn
And Rachel, I have to send you, I have to. My 10 year old daughter plays and you got to see her, she's a rip. It's a lot of fun. So we got a lot of hockey to talk.
Don LaGreca
Absolutely.
Rachel Herzog
Send it my way.
Alan Hahn
You got it.
Rachel Herzog
Yes, 100%.
Alan Hahn
All right.
Rachel Herzog
I appreciate you guys having me on. This is a lot of fun.
Alan Hahn
Great to have you. We'll talk to you again.
Don LaGreca
You got it.
Alan Hahn
All right. This is going to be fun. This is gonna be fun tonight.
Don LaGreca
Rick DiPietro chimed in.
Alan Hahn
Are you sure you should read this.
Peter Rosenberg
I think you should lay out here and move forward.
Alan Hahn
There's a lot of tiptoeing and there's.
Peter Rosenberg
A lot of sushi and fish chalk.
Alan Hahn
You know what I mean?
Peter Rosenberg
I just don't think this is a great place.
Don LaGreca
I'm gonna forward it to you guys, and then you decide whether you, whether this is something that should be right or not.
Alan Hahn
I just.
Don LaGreca
You just should be receiving it now, yet.
Alan Hahn
No, I don't even understand it.
Don LaGreca
Again, I'm not sure either.
Alan Hahn
Peter, I'm with you.
Don LaGreca
Like, I, I, I'm. I, I think I know, but I'm not.
Alan Hahn
Oh, yeah, no, I know. And it's, it's not. No, don't say don't.
Anthony Pusich
Even if I don't know, it's not worth saying on the.
Alan Hahn
Once you say it out loud, you're gonna go, oh. And just. Oh.
Peter Rosenberg
I liked it. You know what? That was more. More creative than his usual.
Alan Hahn
It was really good.
Peter Rosenberg
That was actually pretty good.
Don LaGreca
For people that might be confused that it was all about Peter going after.
Peter Rosenberg
God forbid.
Don LaGreca
God forbid.
Alan Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. I don't want to know how the sausage is made, man. I just want to know. It's good. Hear more of Don Allen and Peter weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 880 ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers before you go.
