Don Hahn
This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Peter Rosenberg
That sounds like heaven to me.
Don Hahn
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers.
Alan Hahn
All right into the big five o'clock hour we go with Don McGregor and Peter Rosenberg. I'm Alan Hahn. 880 ESPN, the ESPN New York app as well. And guys, it's probably a good time for us to just let everybody know his baseball season is about to start Thursday. Right?
Peter Rosenberg
Can you imagine what we'd be talking about now if that exhibition game between the Mets and the Yankees was for real with Nimmo hitting a three run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game? Completely different world. Yeah. A week from now it'll be completely different situation.
Guest Speaker
Good thing it's less than meaningless now.
Alan Hahn
It is less than meaningless. But you're right though, if that was a real game, think about the just the absolute anxiety going on with the Yankees right now.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
Just wild. But for those who everybody that we should tell them when the Mets do play afternoon games and early starts, stuff that does cut into our show on 880. We will be going live on 1050.
Peter Rosenberg
Right?
Alan Hahn
What? But the ESPNY app is the easiest thing to do because you don't have to change channels or find it somewhere else. You just always know.
Guest Speaker
I thought we weren't even going to mention 10. Yeah, 1050. Sure, 1050. 1050. But that ESPN New York, that's what we're doing.
Alan Hahn
But we're doing What?
Peter Rosenberg
Just that ESP 1050 is literally for the people that do not have a phone. Yes, again, I don't make a dime from it because it's free. Yeah, that's why I don't make a dime from it.
Alan Hahn
Which I don't like that we should make people.
Peter Rosenberg
But I would. But. But you don't have to pay.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
But I get the apprehension because I know on the television side with the app you roll your eyes. Oh my God, another app I gotta download to watch my Mets and Yankees play. And I gotta watch the. Now there's a playoff game on Amazon. I gotta download that it's not like that. It's easy, it's free, it's on your phone. And all you do is you get in the car, you hook the Bluetooth up anyway for your car's gonna already do it because you're gonna use your phone. And then, bang, you have it. Like you should have it. Just when you get stuck in the Holland or Lincoln tunnel and you can't get reception. Doesn't matter. You listen to the app. You have that vacation, the Guam you've saved up for since your senior year in high school. Guess what? You can hear it in Guam. I'm being honest again. I don't make a dime from it, but I do think it's where we're going as a society. Do yourself a favor.
Guest Speaker
So get with it.
Peter Rosenberg
You don't have to worry about the signal. And if in my car, you. You hook it up at home, you can just ask Alexa. Play 880 ESPN.
Guest Speaker
Bang.
Peter Rosenberg
You're listening to it in the kitchen. I mean, that should be the way you consume. So when you roll your eyes, all the Mets are on. What do I do? What do you do? Just go to your phone. Bang, it's there. And as soon as you go on the app and you hit the tile instantaneously, you're listening.
Guest Speaker
Now, if you're wondering, if you're saying, wow, these guys are really doing some intense shilling for this app.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right.
Guest Speaker
I have the explanation. Let me explain for you, everyone, because we either mistakenly or intentionally, I don't think any of the three of us are sure yet volunteered. We said, with all due respect to the Mets, we can't preempt our show every time. Like, there's just too much going on, and we don't want to leave our people. So what we're saying is, people, we have volunteered to work on days when we could have been off. So you need to come on the journey with us and listen on the app. Because whether the Mets play or not, Don Hahn and Rosenberg continues on the app every single time.
Alan Hahn
No off days.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, we have an app for you. But wait a minute. We have an app to listen to the show?
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
And I don't think people need to have the app when the Mets are playing to go on and listen to somebody else do our show.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Doesn't make sense. You know, when, when the, when the.
Alan Hahn
Nets, you want to listen to the Mets. If you want to listen to baseball, you have that option. But if you're like, you know, there's other stuff going on in the world of sports, I want to hear the guys. That's why we're there.
Peter Rosenberg
When the Knicks and Rangers are playing at the same time, the Rangers don't go, oh, I guess we've got the day off because we're not an MSG proper.
Alan Hahn
Right, Right.
Peter Rosenberg
When the Nets are playing on. Yes. And the Yankees are playing, they don't go, oh, we got a day off. Now, they might want to take the day off because then they'd get the L and get a higher pick, but they're going to still play the game. The show must go on, I'm saying, man. So all those people out there that do not have a phone or they've got a flip phone or that their phone is hanging on the wall with a big, huge cord, by all means, 1050, it's there for you. Consume it, love it, rub it on your forehead. But if you're like everybody else on the planet with a smartphone, download the damn app. Do yourself a favor.
Alan Hahn
There you go. All right, so now you've heard it.
Peter Rosenberg
That's your commercial. Air that during commercial breaks.
Alan Hahn
Right? There's your promo. We just cut it, print, done, run it, and there you go. Listen, we just wanted to look because baseball season's about to start and there's a lot of questions. I don't know what's going to happen.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know if I'm ready.
Alan Hahn
I don't know if I'm ready either. I got to be honest with you, the weather today, I'm not ready.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm looking forward to it, but we just. There's so much going on, like, you know, with the Knicks and the Rangers hanging on by a thread. We got the Giants looking for a quarterback.
Alan Hahn
No, I know, but we will be. We'll be knee deep in it, and that's what we love about it. So before we get back to call to 800, now we're 93776. Don did mention there is the Giants in the quarterback situation. There's a draft coming up. Cam Ward had the pro date today down in Miami. Right now again, he's supposed to go number one now.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. It can only go down today, right?
Alan Hahn
Like, what could. I mean, what could you possibly do today that's going to make guys go, oh, yeah, like, why even have a pro day if you're Cam Ward? What do you need to do?
Peter Rosenberg
I like that he's doing it.
Alan Hahn
Everybody thinks. Well, of course everybody thinks he's going number one. Everybody believes he's going number one. And that Tennessee's taking them. They're not trading the pick. Remember all that stuff. I know you guys get sick of hearing about the, these mock drafts because it does roll around. But we are now reaching the point where the BS is being filtered out and the reality is setting in. And the reality is the Titans are going to take him at number one. So it's what the Giants do it too. And what the Browns do it. I mean, the Browns do it too, and the Giants do it. Three is going to be a lot of question marks about who's the next quarterback being taken, who's going to be available when the Giants pick at three, there's no chance of them moving up. And so like the story is now starting to unfold, which is why Jameis Winston being signed by the Giants before the weekend started is a very interesting development. But I don't think it's their answer. I think it's just a piece that they need to put in the room because they only had Tommy DeVito.
Peter Rosenberg
Let me explain this to people. All right? When you open training camp in a perfect world, you'd like to have four quarterbacks on your roster. One likely to get cut, one that'll move to the practice squad, and two that'll be with the big club. Ideally, not everybody. If you've got an incumbent starting quarterback, you maybe don't need that fourth quarterback. But if there's balls in play here for the Giants had one. And likely the one that they had was either going to be your practice squad guy or your guy that was going to get cut, which means I had to go find two other quarterbacks at least. Well, they found one basically for free. There are kickers making more money than Jameis Winston. So my belief in Winston is. I'm not thrilled because I don't know how great he is as a quarterback. He did throw 30 touchdowns to throw 30 interceptions. So it can go either way. But for $4 million a year, guys, it's a no brainer and it doesn't change the landscape at all because they needed another body in the room. So they could still get Aaron Rodgers, they can still get Russell Wilson.
Alan Hahn
Right?
Peter Rosenberg
They could still bring in Joe Flacco or they could, they could draft a quarterback. But the fact is they can kind of control bringing in another veteran. They can't control the quarterback because you said Tennessee is going to take a quarterback at one. You know how I know that? Because they would trade with the Giants if they weren't. Because would you say, at least on the surface, that Hunter and Carter are generational talents coming out of college. So if I'm not taking a quarterback, I'm going to take one of those two. Yes, that would be available to me at three, because I know the Giants are going to be taking a quarterback at one and in all likelihood, all right, Cleveland will take a quarterback or one of the two generational talents, which.
Alan Hahn
Means you'll still have a generational talent, right? Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So they're obviously going to take a quarterback. So that means Ward's gone and then we'll see if Sanders is going to be available to them at three or do they trade the pick down, take another quarterback? The fact is, Winston is a body. He's very capable. No, but.
Guest Speaker
No.
Alan Hahn
Why are you laughing, Peter?
Guest Speaker
It's just not what you dream of hearing when you're a quarterback.
Peter Rosenberg
No, but, but I'm sorry, But that for $4 million a year in the NFL, Peter, what else might play corpses to get paid more money than $4 million a year as a quarterback in the NFL?
Guest Speaker
No, it's true. You know what?
Peter Rosenberg
Backed up Sam Darnold For $10 million a year, James Winston's going to make four.
Guest Speaker
Honestly, it's calling at this point, Alan, for that price. Warm might be too much of a description.
Peter Rosenberg
Is there fog on the mirror? Right?
Alan Hahn
A little. It shows you, though, so that he chose the Giants more than the Giants chose him. He wanted so bad to be in New York. I think he's already probably nailed it. Yeah, I think he's probably thinking about a post career at this point. Everybody knows he's got a great personality. He'll be tremendous on tv. Right. So you come to New York, you know, there'll be lots of media around, you'll get your personality and a lot of quotes and stuff and you'll have reason to talk. You hope. And then in the end, if you think about it, the Giants are like, yeah, for this price, why not? Because their plan is probably everybody. As much as no one wants to hear it, it's still waiting for Aaron Rodgers. They're still waiting for Aaron Rodgers with the hope that Rogers might say, I'd rather go there than Pittsburgh or perhaps other places. Now, Minnesota made it clear that right now we're all set.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Alan Hahn
But you know, my good friend Jeff Darlington, name drop, did say on get up this morning that there's like, those aren't the only teams that are still sort of interested in Aaron Rodgers and that Rodgers isn't sitting around choosing between Pittsburgh, New York or retirement. He's not doing that. There's legit opportunities for him that will could come to play depending on the draft and other things. And that the Giants right now could simply get Rogers, have Winston and there's your quarterback situation and then you have good reason at three to go for one of the generational talents. Right. There's one.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Alan Hahn
Or if that first fails and you don't get Rogers, you have Jameis Winston as a guy who has started in this league. It can capably handle it and you draft yourself somebody. If not Shador Sanders and Jackson Dart or the kid from Louisville that now everybody's talking about.
Peter Rosenberg
Now you look at what they had. Daniel Jones, right? Yeah. Best case scenario, Daniel Jones was what, a guy that can maybe throw 25 touchdown passes, wasn't going to make a ton of mistakes maybe because he couldn't afford to because he wasn't going to throw for a lot of yards and throw touchdowns. Jameis Winston, you know, can throw 30 touchdown passes because he's done it. So if Brian Dable can fix the interceptions, if I got a guy that could throw 30 touchdown passes, this could turn out to be a bargain.
Alan Hahn
And if it's not, love to watch Brian. I would want an ISO cam on Dable on every snap just to see his reaction to things that Jameis would end up doing.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. And if it doesn't work out and he doesn't listen and he doesn't improve, okay. I didn't invest that much financially.
Alan Hahn
They can cut him after that.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, so. So it's really a no brainer but to think that they've now has their, their QB one, maybe he would, maybe he could win the job. But right now they just needed another quarterback to go in there. I think it works as you said for Winston because he's in New York. You know, he's going to have a career post, his career and why not do it in New York and be able to latch on when his career is over. But there's, there's clearly talent there, guys. It's just finding a way to crack it open. And it's kind, it's kind of what the jets are doing with Justin Fields, except a lot more expensive. Not that I think the jets overpaid for Fields, but hey, for $20 million a year they're hoping that they can kind of crack the code on him. He's a lot younger, 26 to 31. But that's what the Giants would do, crack the code for not really that much of an expense and that's what they did. But it doesn't affect me either way, Alan, as far as direction they're going to go, I still don't know. I in my heart, I still believe they're not interested in Sanders and no, they're not getting Ward.
Alan Hahn
Really.
Peter Rosenberg
And now they're going to have to go find another runner because you can't go into the season, right, Peter? You can't go into the season with Winston and DeVito. No. You're going to need another body in there.
Guest Speaker
No, no, you absolutely can if you want to run back last year.
Alan Hahn
Oh, God, no problem.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, I think John Clear, we're not running back last year. Listen, if you want to keep your.
Alan Hahn
Job, Tyler Schuck from Louisville is a name to watch. It's the name that all the guys that are putting their homework in on the draft, all the ESPN guys, all my buddies over there, Louis Riddick and what they keep talking about this guy as if he'll be the next name. We already know Jackson Dart went from a guy that could go in the second round. He could be a third round. He's a day two pick now. He's a top 10 pick. All right, so there's another quarterback that everybody's in love with. And then shuck is the kid from Louisville who has played very well in college. He's a little bit older, he's got some experience and he's now working his way into the top 25 first round pick draft and maybe even Pittsburgh takes him instead. So keep your just listen for that name and keep your eyes out for that name.
Peter Rosenberg
Alan, Peter, whoever wants to volunteer for this, talk to me. I'm stupid. I need this explained to me. All right, so watching games in college doesn't matter. It doesn't matter.
Alan Hahn
Maybe watching games.
Peter Rosenberg
What do you mean? Well, you did in college. All these guys finish up their college, they're eligible for the draft.
Alan Hahn
Oh, I get.
Peter Rosenberg
They play. They got all their games on tape. Oh, this guy's a third round pick. And then all of a sudden because of the combine, because of Wonderlic or their pro day or I'm not doing anything today, so I'm going to have another mock draft. They move up. How do you move up off the field? How?
Alan Hahn
Well, because the more you talk to scouts and the more you talk, the more is revealed during the season. Scouts are going to give you a little, a little bit of this, a little bit of that. But until they sit down with the general managers who aren't putting a lot of time into the draft during the regular season, you're not really Going to get a sense until the season's over. And it's like, you know what? Our needs have changed. We need this, we need that. That guy fits it. And my guy just. I sent him some film and he fell in love with the guy. That. That does happen.
Peter Rosenberg
So are they not paying attention to the college game?
Alan Hahn
Well, GMs can't be doing that. They're worried about their own teams in their. In their NFL. Your scouts are doing this for you.
Peter Rosenberg
I feel like I'm being led by my nose with all this stuff. Every year, we are every. You sit there, you watch college football, you know, suck for Sam, and all these things come out, and then a million things change. And the next thing you know, there's a. You know, Baker Mayfield gets drafted first.
Alan Hahn
Overall, and the biggest sham going is the NFL draft and the NBA draft.
Peter Rosenberg
Two of the biggest shams go once, right? That's not going to change. Yeah, you only got two rounds, so you can't really jump that out.
Alan Hahn
Come on, Donnie. We hear about kids. I'm telling you this. I've covered. Oh, my God. What's this going to be for me? Is this 20? This might be my 20th NBA draft.
Peter Rosenberg
That's a lot.
Alan Hahn
And you're not an old man. As a reporter and then as a broadcaster, and I host. I host now for ESPN Radio, the NBA draft. I've been there the last three years, so this has become a thing as well. And you see what happens as you get prepared and they tell you about how great these guys are and how the NBA ready and all these words and phrases you hear about these players, and then they get drafted and you get all this hype, and then they go into the room and you start watching these players. And then three years later, you're like, wait, that dude's already playing in Europe? Like, you gotta trust me. Like, there's names where I laugh because I remember how I did all this prep on this guy, thinking this guy's gonna be a great pick. And now, like, he's in Europe already. He's playing in Greece. So it is. Sometimes it is such a. It's a great show, it's a great production. It's all wonderful theater. But in the end, you're right, Don. Nobody knows until we know. And the only time we know is when the games begin.
Peter Rosenberg
But don't you feel like you're being led? Like, shouldn't. Shouldn't what you see on the field be the end all? Be all?
Alan Hahn
Yeah, listen with your eyes is what.
Peter Rosenberg
Herm Edwards always Says how many, like in draft day, like how many of his friends, how many of his teammates went to his birthday party. It's too much what went on on this part time job. His Wonderlic wasn't really where it needed to be, the combine or his pro, like, come on, man. Like, you watch him play the game of football and then, and listen and he's been a good kid and he's actually played pretty well. But this jump that Baker Mayfield made, didn't they have it right all along? He wasn't worth the first overall pick in the draft.
Alan Hahn
No, no, he wasn't. The guy that went, Let me see, what draft was that? That was the, that was Sam's draft.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, yeah.
Alan Hahn
The guy that went seventh, which should have been number one.
Peter Rosenberg
And I remember when Ernie, the guy went 30, of course he fell in love with Eli. Watch him at Ole Miss. There wasn't any. All of a sudden full bloom after the fact. He watched him play football.
Alan Hahn
The great quote, Peter, I don't know if you ever heard this one. The great quote from Herm Edwards goes, it's not you play to win the game. It's not that. It's listen with your eyes. He always said that about, about talent. And you know, when you, when you know about a player, your eyes will tell you, don't, don't, don't listen to what everybody says. It's what you see. And that is the biggest part when it comes to the draft. And that's why with the giants and the 3 pick, if Sanders is not the guy, if you don't feel like in your heart of hearts that he fits the way you want to play. What he. I still think he's going to be a great, I think he's going to be a great pro. But if I'm wrong, fine, I'm wrong. I'm not getting paid for this. But with them, they got to know. And you don't pass on Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter because you need a quarterback. Right, Right. Which is why I think they sign a guy like Jameis Winston. Because for them it's like, at least we've got a guy that if we can't get the guy we want in this draft, we can just keep moving forward by getting generational talent. That's what's got to happen here. And I'm curious to see if that's where this goes. 800-9193776 Again, Cam Ward's about to begin his pro day.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
And Joe Shane is there. He should be. That's your job. You're supposed to go. But all Joe Shane's going to walk away going is love to draft them, but I can't because I'm third and the team that's number one probably is going to do it. Let's go to Dave in Westchester on the Giants. What's up, Dave?
Caller
Hey, how you doing? Assuming that Mara is an intelligent guy, I think that they can take one of the generational talents and sell themselves. They were going in the right direction by them getting James Winston. I'm now 100% convinced that they're going to take Shador Sanders, who I definitely do not want.
Alan Hahn
But why are you convinced that? Why are you convinced by that? What, what is convincing?
Caller
A couple of reasons. I just don't want to get into over on the radio. I just, I don't want to. I don't think he. Personally, I don't think he's that good. I'd rather get the quarterback next year and take Abdul.
Alan Hahn
What don't you like about Shadow Sanders, Dave?
Peter Rosenberg
It's a safe place to safe place.
Alan Hahn
What don't you like about him?
Caller
I mean, if he was so great, why did everybody have all these different things that he was dropping his, this, he's that, is this, he's that. And all of a sudden Mel Kuiper comes up and says now he's, now he's going to be picked third. I, I just, I don't think he's all that great. I just don't think he's, that's fine. All that good.
Peter Rosenberg
I could understand the apprehension.
Caller
I think if you, no matter who, I don't care if you have John Elway, who I think is the greatest quarterback ever. The Giants are winning seven games. They have the hardest schedule and they don't have a good team. They have a million holes. I know the quarterback is the most important position, but you think just getting Shador Sanders, if he's great is going to.
Alan Hahn
Well, you're not going to win. You're not going to win right away, Dave. But you, you draft, you're not winning next year. Well, you draft a Shador Sanders. You draft a Shador Sanders because you think over time you're going to have that answer at quarterback for a long time, that you feel like you'll start to win at some point. But there's no quarterback you're going to draft no one like Trevor Lawrence. Generational talent. You drafted him. You did not expect to win right away. That's a reality when you're drafting that high. You Suck. You're not going to turn it around in one year. Now, Washington, the Commanders certainly changed that narrative, but it rarely happens that way. Doesn't work that way.
Peter Rosenberg
They've got to be able to accumulate talent. At the same time, I still think they can draft a quarterback.
Alan Hahn
I think they're filling holes, by the way, I do think they are filling some holes on the process.
Peter Rosenberg
They are. And the idea that you're not going to win this year or next year, the two things that I think are very overrated. You look at a schedule, you know how many times we'll look at a schedule and go, oh, my God.
Alan Hahn
Based on.
Peter Rosenberg
I thought that team was going to be so good and they stunk. That's fair, you know, and vice versa. Like you looked at the Commanders, right, Peter, and said, we got the Commanders, we should be able to win. That's two wins for the Giants right there. They always beat the Commanders.
Guest Speaker
I heard that.
Peter Rosenberg
And then the Commanders are playing in the championship game. So I don't get caught up in the schedule. And also you could, if you make the right decisions, you can turn it around. I don't think they're going to win a Super bowl in two years, but you don't think they can win five, six games and then maybe jump to seven or eight games. Like the idea that they're going to awful again. Draft Arch Manning and we know he's any good. I don't know. Can't keep losing games every season and expect that everything's going to get better once they find the quarterback.
Alan Hahn
Well, this whole notion that, well, we're not going to win anyway, that doesn't make sense. You draft players to make your roster better and then over time, eventually you'll have a good roster. That's just how it's supposed to work. This notion that one guy is going to change all the fortunes that doesn't exist in the NFL. It's not one guy.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not the NBA.
Alan Hahn
It could be a good draft and then a couple of good free agency picks and then your draft from last year got better and all of a sudden you find yourselves like the Washington Commanders, where you're pushing for the, for the NFC Championship. But that's. You got to build it right.
Peter Rosenberg
And the other thing is, it's not like the jets who blew up their front office and now it doesn't matter. There's no expectations. Their owner, John Maurer, rightly or wrongly, has decided to run it back with this and he wants his team to win so they're going to have to try to win. So the idea to root for them to lose, blow it up again. If that's the case, then don't draft a quarterback because that's not going to work out for anybody. They're going to try to win games, root for them to win games and just hope for the best.

DonJon Rosenberg, 880 ESPN and on the ESP New York app you definitely need to have on your phone.
Peter Rosenberg
Speaking of apps, I had to pay the parking and is that where you went?
Alan Hahn
You just ran?
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, no, no. I just had to get where there was an ample reception, so that meant being near a window.
Alan Hahn
Oh, he's just using an app to pay the park. Yeah, that's a good deal.
Peter Rosenberg
I've been very fortunate.
Alan Hahn
You find in the parking, man, like, it's unbelievable. You really are like, you just, you have a way to find parking. I took the train today because the weather was trash and when I got out of the subway, I looked at where you always park and there was a gigantic box truck unloading whatever for whatever, taking up like four spots. And I'm like, Donnie's not getting a spot today. Then I went for, I went down to some stores that I wanted to go In Soho. Came back, truck's gone, three spots open.
Peter Rosenberg
And I'm like nine. I found my spot.
Alan Hahn
Of course you did. It's ridiculous. Well, how you do it?
Peter Rosenberg
The worm's gonna turn.
Alan Hahn
I'll be circling for hours like it's European vacation. Look, kids, Big Ben, Parliament. Like I won't be able to get a spot. You.
Peter Rosenberg
I've been fortunate that every day that we've been here, I've found parking on 6th, which is good.
Alan Hahn
Velvet rope all there for.
Guest Speaker
Look at you.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, Peter found the. Well, I went by that. That quote unquote spot, Peter, that you found last Thursday or whatever it was.
Guest Speaker
Uh huh.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I.
Guest Speaker
It's open again.
Alan Hahn
Shady.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it's. It's not.
Alan Hahn
You don't.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not legit.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, you don't.
Peter Rosenberg
I investigated it. It's not legit.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, you're getting a boot on your next time you do that.
Guest Speaker
Alan, real quick, I need to stop here because. What, what are you saying, Don? Why? How would it not be legit?
Peter Rosenberg
Because it said 9:30 or 10:30 that you're free to park at 10:30, but above that is a sign about like a school medallion or something. You have to. And I don't have that. I'm telling you, I did the investigator. You got away with it. Good for you. Not a legit parking space. There's no such thing as a free space in New York.
Alan Hahn
No, yes, there are.
Guest Speaker
What do you mean? My whole entire block, there's always free space.
Alan Hahn
No.
Guest Speaker
Respect. I say this totally respect.
Peter Rosenberg
I saw the sign. I'll take Alan. I'll take you after the show and show you. Ace of bass says it right there. School zone and something that you needed.
Guest Speaker
No.
Peter Rosenberg
Right on, right on. Right in front of our building.
Alan Hahn
Go check it out after the show.
Guest Speaker
Right on. 6 on 6th Avenue in front of our building. There was no medallion sign. Simply said alternate side parking. Like 9 to 10:30 Tuesdays. That's it. I'm telling you.
Alan Hahn
What was this?
Peter Rosenberg
I think it's a fantasy. I think we might. We might have to say he was sick last week. I think he was seeing a mirage. We're lucky we didn't lose Peter last week.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. How's the voice? You good? Like you, you. I mean, you sound all right, but you do sound a little gravelly. Like a little bit.
Guest Speaker
Well, I'm just. I'm just saying I just want to stay at this, like, level today. I feel a slight little soreness in my throat. Only because they put an even bigger camera down my Throat today.
Alan Hahn
Oh, wow.
Guest Speaker
To look. But, no, I feel. I feel pretty good. I just want to be like, guys, this scared me. Like, I. I'm not going to lie. Like, you know, as Don knows, I used to make fun of K and said he was lying when he was gone that whole summer. And obviously I was joking. It was very serious. But it really never crossed my mind like that. Like, the three of us, we lose this voice, you know, respectfully, Don, I mean, Alan, to your writing career. That's not what you're doing anymore. We lose this voice right now, we lose our livelihood. And I was like, oh, man, I got to take care of this thing. So it did freak me out a little bit, but I feel pretty good right now. Lots of hot tea, lots of manuka honey, lots of water, and some steroids. Oh, I got to take my steroids. Thank you.
Alan Hahn
Getting jacked very bonds this radio.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know if it's psychological, whatever, but anytime I've had to take steroids for, like, any kind of ailment, I do seem to get more out of the gym. Maybe it's psychological. I don't know.
Alan Hahn
It's not. No, legit psychological. It's like you feel like it's the. It's the most incredible feeling. Seriously.
Guest Speaker
Oh, but here we go. Here comes. Here comes. Here comes pr.
Alan Hahn
Hannah. You talk about.
Guest Speaker
You start getting excited about roids. Talk about a pr.
Alan Hahn
I started going back to my doctor like I was Pookie.
Guest Speaker
It'd be cool.
Alan Hahn
By the way, just one more week. Just one more week, Doc and I. Just one more week.
Peter Rosenberg
I just want more.
Guest Speaker
We know. You know, listen, give me. Give me. Give me a few more weeks, guys. I'm gonna be 50. Home run. Brady Anderson.
Alan Hahn
You know what I mean? Brady Anderson. That's exactly. That's exactly the reference. What can Jameis Winston mean for the Giants? Our good friend Chris Canty this morning said this.
Chris Canty
Jameis Winston is the pace guard for whatever quarterback that they draft.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Chris Canty
Like, they're going to be an open competition in training camp, and they're hoping that their young guy wins it. And then, oh, by the way, Jameis Winston, because of his pedigree, because he was the number one overall pick, can help that young quarterback, if that guy needs it, deal with being thrust into the NFL spotlight, especially in the most intense market in the entire country.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, a little mentorship, guidance, you know, that kind of stuff. I think Winston knows where he is at this point in his career. He was once that guy that was drafted to be a Franchise savior. So he certainly understands that part of it. So. But if I'm, if you're a Giants fan and you were trying to send me, which I saw this on social media after he was signed, his stats, these numbers that are like, you know, like how he's going to turn the Giants around. He's the best quarterback the Giants have had in a decade, by the way. If that's the case, it's been a bad decade.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, and we know it has.
Alan Hahn
Like, come on, man. Like, like, all due respect to James Winston, this is, this is not a savior. This is not a guy that's going to put on the jersey and suddenly give you guys, you know, credibility as a winning franchise. He is somebody that you needed, someone who can functionally play the position. He wanted the job, so you gave him the job for now.
Peter Rosenberg
If you look at it, the circumstances are not exactly the same because the jets are not going to be in a position you wouldn't think of taking a generational quarterback at 7. But what they did with Fields is kind of what the Giants are doing with James Winston. And that is trying to see if you can, if you can tap in to the unquestioned upside potential of the quarterback. The difference is at 26, Fields commanded more money and Winston commanded less money, being 31. But otherwise it's, hey, maybe we can get the best out of these quarterbacks. Maybe we can find something here. And the Giants are hoping that, that Winston plays, that Jameis plays so well that he ends up being more than they expected. And you get a really cheap quarterback that can throw you 30 touchdowns and if not, all right, no big deal, then you're just a backup to whoever our next quarterback is going to be.
Alan Hahn
I'm not feeling it. Jordan Renan earlier today on the Giants quarterback situation. After now signing Jameis wins, they're still.
Jordan Renan
Looking at the veteran quarterbacks. They're waiting on Aaron Rodgers just like they were before. And now they at least have a veteran quarterback that they know they could start if they need to. Look, they're just going to add as many bodies at the position as possible. That's the conclusion that I've come to here. It could be in free agency, it could be multiple veterans, it could be in the draft. Just keep stacking at the position as much as possible. Because the reality is all these veteran quarterbacks, none of them are the answer long term anyway, right? The only thing that ultimately matters is the Giants find their quarterback of the future, which is when John Maris spoke at the end of the Season, he said three things. Number one, he called out the defense. Defense wasn't very good. What they do, they signed a bunch of defensive guys. He said they needed offensive line depth. They signed a bunch of depth offensive linemen.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Jordan Renan
The other thing he mentioned, and he said this was the number one priority this offseason was find a quarterback of the future stuff. That's still going to be the goal. But add as many veterans, as much, give yourself as much protection as possible.
Alan Hahn
That's.
Jordan Renan
That seems to be the plan here at the quarterback.
Alan Hahn
I don't believe that they're trying to find the quarterback of the future. Their first target was Matt Stafford. Then they were connected to Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. Now they just brought in Jameis Winston and they're still trying to be in on Aaron Rodgers. Russell Wilson left without a deal and I don't hear as much about Russell Wilson as you did. So to me, they don't. If they love Cam Ward, they know they can't get him. They don't love anybody else in this draft and they're trying to get a vet to get him through at least another year or two before they get back into the quarterback market in the draft. I don't think that they are trying to get their quarterback of the future.
Peter Rosenberg
But who would be trying to get it? Joe Shane, right?
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Why would he be worried about a quarterback of the future when his Future isn't beyond 2026?
Alan Hahn
Because that can save his career if he was able to land Cam Ward and Cam Ward turned into everything that they hoped he'd be, which, again, no one. You got to understand this. This is also based on what's around you. Cam Ward is going to be, you know, he has potential to be a good quarterback. This is not a generational talent. This is not a guy that would in any other draft be the first quarterback taken. He's not even the best player in the draft.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Alan Hahn
So the problem is, is that because of the circumstances, what's around him, he. He looks a lot more pretty than he does. Right. And that's why there's this sense of, you got to get this guy. There's no guarantee that he's going to lead you to the promised land.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Alan Hahn
So for them, but you got to be careful.
Peter Rosenberg
But is Cam Ward or Shadur Sanders enough to get Shane an extension? Because you don't want to fire the general manager after the first year of your young quarterback.
Alan Hahn
You don't.
Peter Rosenberg
He may not be generational, but he's still a pick that you would have Taken third overall. So that's my concern is I'm willing to blow this up. I was willing to blow it up last year, but the problem is I don't want Shane and Dable to be let go at the end of 2025. And I've got my third overall pick dangling there now having to worry about a second offensive coordinator, second head coach, second general manager and stunt his growth. So I don't think they're going to take a quarterback. That's why I kind of, I'm dubious on the whole, well, they're looking for the quarterback of the future. Their best future might be, hey, maybe we get Aaron Rodgers and he plays two seasons. Maybe we can turn Jameis Winston around. He's only 31. Maybe he can be Geno Smith Mach 2 and go win us a few games for the next three, four years.
Alan Hahn
Don, that's not on the table. That's not.
Peter Rosenberg
But I know, I don't think it is either. But I'm just saying if you're hoping to find your future quarterback outside the draft and you're hoping it to be some veteran, then really you can only go buy time.
Alan Hahn
I'm telling you. Why would they talk like you would make a swing and miss for Matt Stafford? Because you know, we got nothing. And at least this, this, if I get a guy like him, my owner goes, well, okay, you got a top 10 quarterback. That's a great move. Couldn't get him.
Peter Rosenberg
That's the bonus. Now what? I can't get that out of my mind. They were willing to pay $50 million over the next two seasons at least.
Alan Hahn
Doesn'T that for Matthew Stafford?
Peter Rosenberg
And now all of a sudden you're going to pivot to your whole job, save two quarterbacks that might not even be there at three. Like, I don't believe in my heart they like either of these two quarterbacks. I think that they're going to try to get a veteran to go along with Winston and they're either going to trade three down, draft the quarterback later, or get the generational talent at three and then hope in the second round there's some quarterback to get out of Louisville or something that they could say can be our project.
Alan Hahn
Travis Hunter could be that guy. And like you talk about a guy that could end up becoming an all timer. Travis Hunter's got that kind of ability.
Peter Rosenberg
Would you take him over Carter?
Alan Hahn
He will. I don't think you'll have that choice, but it's a great question.
Peter Rosenberg
You will if both quarterbacks are taken.
Alan Hahn
I'll say this if you just paid, you just prayed. Oh, God, help me out. You have Kayvon Tibet on one side and they brought it. Burns. Brian Burns.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
You paid him a ton of money. I mean, now you're going to draft another edge rush guy, but it's doing.
Guest Speaker
That fresh rookie contract.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a, it's a pretty important position. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know if Thibodeau's. Yeah.
Guest Speaker
By the way, sounds like. Feels like Thibodeau's. This isn't lasting forever. Do you realize that? How fascinating this is though? So you have, you have like at least three scenarios happening. You have. For this coaching staff. You have. They, they get the young generational quarterback and get a chance to develop that quarterback. Probably their best case scenario because if somehow it works out, they could have just bought themselves five years. Right? You have the. They get a veteran who's capable, an Aaron Rodgers. They're able to do enough to stick around. Then you have another scenario, guys, where if it ends up being Jameis Winston, Tommy DeVito and whoever else they get off the scrap heap, I don't care what they were planning. It's going to end up being the end of these guys. It's going to be a 2 and 15 full start.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, then you're going to. Yeah, then you're going to start and that's it.
Guest Speaker
So like there's, there's so many different scenarios and I wonder if anybody knows what's actually going to happen at this point.
Alan Hahn
No, they don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
How could they know? No, they don't because they don't know in their heart what Tennessee and Cleveland are going to do. Right. So you don't know if the quarterback is going to be there. You can't plan for that. How could you plan for anything? And Aaron Rodgers is probably not going to choose you.
Alan Hahn
How can you plan for anything? That's the problem.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, you can plan for everything, but honestly, you can't say this is what we're going to do. We're going to draft a quarterback. Oh, really? Well, what if, what if both quarterbacks are gone at 12 now what are you going to do? Is Jackson Dart. You're going to take him at three.
Alan Hahn
When you're not an attractive option. And I don't know how well they planned this off season. I really don't. They knew they wanted to move on from Daniel Jones, couldn't wait to get out of that business. That's fine. You get out of that business. And then you realize, well, we have an empty quarterback room. We've got to get, we got to get at least capable quarterback play. And you've gone this far into it and you still don't have capable quarterback play and you have a draft where you don't have the ability. Like this is so poorly planned out that they have painted themselves into a corner. Seriously. Like they're forced now into things such as the desperate swing for Matthew Stafford.
Peter Rosenberg
And that's why this is desperate times right now. But you would have a completely different perspective if they fired Shane and Dable. You'd be like the jets, we got a new regime. No pressure. Let's just compile talent.
Alan Hahn
They did the smart thing. Go get a young, still sort of proving himself quarterback in Justin Fields. And at least we could say even if it doesn't work out, we took a shot.
Peter Rosenberg
We took a shot. But, but, but you got to have a plan.
Alan Hahn
They don't. The Giants look like they don't have a plan Don. They were swinging.
Peter Rosenberg
They honestly don't know what's going to happen at one and two. They can't know.
Alan Hahn
800 now. 193776 we'll get back to you. Call. It's such a compelling conversation that still for another month this is going to be a huge story for the Giants. The quarterback situation for them is, is, is a massive story. But the lack of plan going into this off season that we're starting to see unravel might be the bigger story. Was it a mistake that they didn't clean house? 800 now we're not. 3776 more your calls coming up. Don Han Rosenberg 880 ESPN brackets busted.

All right, let's do a little game time brought to you by Tullamore du Irish Whiskey. Because when it's game time, it's Tully time. Islanders host the blue jackets at 7:30. The Devils welcome in the Canucks at 7:30. And the Nets face the Mavericks in Brooklyn tonight at 7:30. And this is a very interesting game in the NBA. There'll be a lot of eyes on this game. Do you know why?
Peter Rosenberg
Don LeCruc, I would think because of Anthony Davis availability.
Alan Hahn
Anthony Davis plans to play tonight.
Peter Rosenberg
Bang.
Alan Hahn
His first. That's been since February 8th.
Peter Rosenberg
February. It's been that long?
Alan Hahn
Yeah. And he has no reason to play.
Guest Speaker
A little scrimmage in full preseason action.
Alan Hahn
The team even kind of gave him the option to shut it down. Like, you know, like there's no Kyrie Irving.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, there's nothing happening here.
Alan Hahn
You know, why don't you just get right and we'll just do this again next year. And Anthony Davis knows what, of course his reputation is about, guys. Availability is his worst ability. And so I think he's trying to prove something here by showing up. And I like it. So it's a big story in the NBA tonight.
Peter Rosenberg
And not for nothing, the Islanders, if they could be Columbus, and Columbus is in free fall or 27 and 1 in their last 10, they would get to 75 points. That would tie them with Montreal for the final playoff spot. Now Montreal would have a game in hand.
Alan Hahn
Yep.
Peter Rosenberg
But they would leapfrog over the Rangers as well. Still with a game in hand on the Rangers who are in Los Angeles tomorrow. So believe it or not, the Islanders have some meaningful games.
Alan Hahn
They are like chipping like they're doing a little like point here, a point there instead of getting the two like again, the Calgary loss was, you know, that's not a great one, but they just seem to like they get a couple of overtime games. They're chipping away with some points. The Islanders are. But you know, you're right though. Another big game at UBS tonight. So one to keep an eye on Tullamore Dew, the original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Tullamore Dew. Or try the new Tullamore Dew Honey. During tonight's action, glasses up to enjoying Jalam or DU responsibly.
Peter Rosenberg
I once did shows with a great talk show host. You may be familiar with this, Michael K. Who said, just keep swimming. That's what the islanders need to do. They just keep swimming. Alan Hahn told me that a long time ago about the islanders.
Alan Hahn
There's two things I tried to make stick with that team a couple of years ago when Rick and I were doing shows, and one of them was just keep swimming. Right from Finding Nemo. Yeah. Because it's just sometimes your mentality has to be that Rick didn't like. That was corny. So that didn't last.
Peter Rosenberg
It is corny, but it's still.
Alan Hahn
But it was my thing. I tried to make a thing. The other thing I tried to make a thing was get it right back to where we started from. You know the. The song from Slap Shot?
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah.
Alan Hahn
They use that now after wins at ubs. Anthony might remember, but I know that when Rick and I were doing shows, I would play that Rick hated it, and I was trying to make it a thing. Like, you know, every. Every team has like, that song. Yeah. I just never had a song, so I thought, let's make this the song now. It's the song. I wonder who over there picked it up. But I'll never get credit for never.
Peter Rosenberg
But we won't go back and find.
Alan Hahn
Them in the archetype.
Peter Rosenberg
It was corny, though. Like when St. Louis used Gloria.
Alan Hahn
Of course it was corny.
Peter Rosenberg
It's always corny.
Alan Hahn
It's fun.
Peter Rosenberg
Grimace was corny.
Alan Hahn
Grimace is very corny.
Peter Rosenberg
And Rick works blue and so. But you can't use any of his. Like, right, Peter? Like, if Rick had to come up with some sort of slogan, they wouldn't know what to do with it because they couldn't use. No.
Guest Speaker
I mean, listen, nothing's quite. Where there's a meth man, there's a Mets fan. You know what I mean?
Alan Hahn
So say anyways. But yes, big stuff happening at UBS tonight. 800 Iowa, 937-7-6 on the Giants as the fans all right now are trying to figure out what's going on. Let's go to C.J. in Brooklyn first. Hey, C.J. what's up?
Caller
Nothing much. Nothing much. I had, you know, response to notion, put it out there that the Giants are, you know, going to be able to stay put and get a guy like Shador. There's no assumption that, you know, the Browns are going to let Shador slip past them at 2. I think their organization that I think has a good fit for him in terms of the quarterback or the coach that's very quarterback centric looks for smart type of quarterback. Similar to, you know, the guys that want a West coast offense, I think they would do well to get him ahead of the Giants. But we have to have a, you know, we have to have a understanding that there could be a world in which both quarterbacks go one and two. And in that case, I would want the Giants to get the best player available. And that for me would be the guy out of Penn State. I think we can short Abdul Carter path for us and have us give us the looks of 2010, 2012, where we had NASCAR style packages, rushing in the quarterback and really returned us to glory days.
Alan Hahn
You know what? C.J. is a good call. And again, I wasn't, I wasn't at all overlooking the fact that Cleveland could draft a quarterback and they could take Sanders or, or whatever they end up doing or somebody could trade with them. But you have no idea. But no, that's a real thing. And the Giants, that's why I think they're looking for all these veterans, because I don't think they're going to be, by the way, a guy they want.
Guest Speaker
I hate to be this person. There was a time very recently, I will. There was a time very recently where the Washington Commanders, they got Chase Young, they got Montez sweat, they got Duron Payne, they literally just drafted every year. A first round pick was a D lineman from Alabama. Need that quarterback. It's a nice thought to be like, let's just build up this D line and we'll dominate football. Allen, you know, not all of them are going to turn out. Kayvon's already not turning out.
Alan Hahn
Many people think he's got so much talent, but it's so much healthy and all the other things that go.
Peter Rosenberg
A lot of commercials though. He's getting a lot of play.
Guest Speaker
He's a good looking kid.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, no, he's got a great personality. He had the whole thing. Remember the whole thing with him was, was Michael Strahan was somebody that he admired because of not just what he did on the field as a player, but how he's turned his career into what it's turned into on the TV side. And he, he was seeing himself as somebody that could do that too, being in New York. And I thought, wow, that's real early to be talking about that. But okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Now this was tweeted out. I'm not sure. What the ProMat 2025 is Deion Sanders was at the ProMat 2025. Jacob. Do we know what that exactly is? But it was something he was at.
Alan Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
And Deon was quoted in saying we are hoping for New York. Shador wants to be a giant again.
Alan Hahn
Remember he was wearing the cleats. So he was wearing giant cleats.
Peter Rosenberg
So does Deion say to Cleveland we're not going there? Is it going to be like Eli point two here where maybe the Giants feel like we can get could be interesting. But do the Giants want or does.
Alan Hahn
Do you do this because you're trying to push Cleveland to do it? Because I don't think like again, are the Giants in love with him or are they. Are they playing this off pretending like they love Ward but deep down they really did want Sanders.
Peter Rosenberg
All that's why all these and they're just games. We don't know why. Again, no offense to any of the people that report on this. Why would any general manager tip their hand? Unless you're in Tennessee and you know, hey, I got the first overall pick. I don't have to worry about it.
Alan Hahn
Well, sorry. I'm watching his pro day right now above your head there, Don. And it's like I'm laughing because it's like he's just, you know, he's just flicking passes. The only thing that could go wrong for him if he blows out his ACL as he's dropping back. What else could go wrong? Like no matter what he does here. Nothing's going to go wrong here.
Peter Rosenberg
You wouldn't think.
Alan Hahn
Anyways, enn's coming up next. Never goes wrong. Your calls are going to be a big part of the final hour. 800-hour-93776 so stay with us. Don Hahn and Rosenberg 880 ESPN.

In case you didn't know, these young men are driven. They are prodigies, the savants. The ones we've been waiting for. Like Damian Lillard, for instance. He doesn't seek guidance or mentorship. He's a leader. He isn't waiting for the baton to be passed to him. He's taking it for himself. He's relentless in a pursuit of greatness, always pushing to one up himself. He is accomplished, but far from satisfied. He embodies what it means to have an unstoppable drive and are shaking up the status quo in their community and beyond. And Damian Lillard drives a Toyota.
