Rosenberg
Game time is brought to you by Telemardu Irish Whiskey. Because when it's game time.
Alan
I like when he holds it.
Rosenberg
Tigers beat the Mets 6 to 2 this afternoon. So the Mets have to settle, taking two out of three against the Tigers while the Yankees will continue their series in Houston versus the Astros at 8:10. Telemore due. The original triple distilled, triple blended and triple cast matured Irish Whiskey. Be sure to grab a Telemore due or try the new Telemore Due, honey, during today's action. Enjoy Telemore due responsibly. So the Yankees beat the Astros. And yeah, it was kind of. Griffin brought it up like, you know, bunting the first bun. I didn't have a problem. I know Michael destroyed it today when I was driving. He's like, why would you bunt first and second?
Alan
Well, he went the wrong way because you're right. You don't want to bunt towards third when there's a runner on second. But he should have bunted the first right.
Rosenberg
It was poorly executed, but it's two nothing. It's early in the game. You want to move the runners in the scoring position. I understand the batter's over 300. I understand that Freed is a really good defender. I wouldn't do it, but I'm not going to kill him. But, you know, in. What was it in the sixth or seventh inning? You're down 6:1. I mean, what are you doing to me? Whenever I see that, that's telling me I just want to get all. I can't make. I can't get a hit here. I'm just gonna. I'm just gonna fake it and sacrifice so I don't look embarrassed. Like, that's what I look at.
Alan
So we saw Volpe do that a couple of years back to Soto did it.
Rosenberg
Remember Soto when he was struggling? He did it too.
Alan
Sorry. Taking punts. Right. But yeah, the it's funny. The Astros really didn't look like themselves, and it looked like they were trying to get the Yankees to make mistakes. And those are the types of ways you get him to make mistakes. Freed was fantastic. Even when he was struggling. He lost control of the sweeper for, like, a couple of pitches. He ended up hitting someone. But I thought overall, though, and he said he was physically ill throughout the game. He was nauseous, which is. Which is odd because he was making the. The Astros hitter. Hitters look sick. He was really, really good. And by the way, don't look now, but remember when he was struggling for a bit and we were worried about the innings count and whether the fact that he was. Was it fatigue that he was dealing with, that he's getting this deep into the season. So his last four appearances, his last time. So one of them was the one nothing loss, no decision, but he's won the other three. But his numbers are actually fantastic. If you just look at his last three starts, two. And, oh, his ERA is 0.90. 18 strikeouts to eight walks, two earned runs total. That's pretty good stuff. And he's averaging. He's getting into the sixth inning. He's not getting to the seventh, but he is averaging into the sixth inning in these. In these outings. So that's showing me that whatever it is that he had lost for a little while there, he's getting it back. He's pitching like an ace.
Rosenberg
Yeah. And that's what you want. So they, you know, this gauntlet, as they call it, of these 12 games, the Yankees get a win, and that's good, but you got to win. Yeah, that's the thing, is there are certain pitchers. You got to win. Freed's on the mound. You have to win. So we'll see what they do the rest of the series and then this weekend against Toronto. I still stand by the fact that the games against Toronto and Boston are more meaningful because they're worth two, because they're in the division. Um, but let's not forget, Red Sox won last night. Blue Jays won last night. So the had to get the win to kind of keep pace with everybody else. So we'll see what happens tonight. On the Met side of things, they lose. Okay. They took two out of three. Just want to win series, but kind of a lethargic day altogether. Holmes doesn't make into the fifth inning again. Four and two thirds, three hits, five runs, two of them earned.
Alan
You're not getting walk three.
Rosenberg
That's just the way that it Is right. Bullpen gives it up again. I don't know how you pitch, Helse. I mean, you had Soto come in. He gives up a couple of hits, and then Helsley comes in in two thirds of an inning. Three hits, three runs, all learned. Walked one. Did have a couple of strikeouts, but he gives up a home run, the big three run home run that broke the game open. This is a three. Two came. He came into. Yeah, and then it gets, you know, busted all open.
Alan
He put himself in a bad spot right out of the gate because he gives up the leadoff single and then he. Then he walks Gleyber Torres. So now you got two on and he's trying to be aggressive against Kerry Carpenter and he takes him deep and all of a sudden the game's over in a blink. It's three, two. Like if you're Mendoza and you're looking at an opportunity that they had to get a sweep, right. And to keep it, keep it rolling. Now, obviously, because they had been. I mean, they've been mashing the baseball lately, they weren't going to get to 10 runs in this game. It's clear. It's three, two. All right, so this is a game where you're a little more under control. I don't know how you're putting gunpowder on the mound right now, but what do you guys literally like? Honestly, he's a powder keg. You don't get him right when it's a one run game in the seventh. You get him right when you give him a little bit of a cushion to come into a game. That was a dangerous decision by Mendoza.
Rosenberg
But what are you supposed to do? You can't hide a relief pitcher.
Alan
Well, you're not hiding him. You just don't use. Don't use him.
Rosenberg
Don't use them. But again, you're four and two thirds. So, you know, you got to go deep into the bullpen. McLean was great last night, but he only gave you six, so you had to get nine outs out of your bullpen. You do have a day off. But they thought they cleared it up, right? They thought it was because he was tipping pitches.
Alan
Yep.
Rosenberg
All right, well, maybe it's not tipping now. Maybe he just doesn't have it. It's ridiculous. He's a. He's. He's throwing, you know, gasoline on a fire right now. It's really pretty embarrassing.
Peter
How long do you. Do you wait to get super aggressive with all the kids?
Rosenberg
I mean, it feels like every Interesting you bring that up because the other topic of Conversation with the Mets is that they laid out their rotation for the Cincinnati series coming up.
Peter
All right.
Rosenberg
And they've got a four and a half. It's four and a half now, game lead. All right, so Peterson is going to start on Friday. On Saturday, they're going to go with Tong, makes his second appearance. And Sunday is going to be the opportunity. They say it's tbd, but it looks like it's. It's going to be because McClain pitched. Yes, Tuesday. So McClain's going to pitch again on Sunday. No, Senger. That's Senga's day. And they. The talk from the Mets is that they're thinking of sending him down to the minors. Now they've got to get his permission.
Alan
That's wild.
Rosenberg
So he can decide to say, no, I'm not going anywhere. I think he's worthless out of the bullpen. First of all, his legs aren't great. So the whole up and down stuff. And then also he's not great in the first inning. So if it takes him a while to kind of get going and lately he hasn't been able to get going at all, I don't understand how he's going to be held in the bullpen at all. And what do the Mets do if he doesn't go to the minors because they're trying to fix something? Does he. Is he the bigger guy? And just say, you know what, we got to get this fixed. The games are too important. We can't do it in the big leagues. I'm going to go. I'm going to go down. But what if he says no?
Peter
What are you going to do? So then the roster spot is just wasted.
Rosenberg
Well, obviously you put him in the bullpen, but he's not going to be good at the bullpen. And I can't start him anymore, Peter. I can't. Sproat's going to come up at some point and you're going to have your rotation. I just cannot have Kodai Senga pitch for the Mets anymore unless he goes someplace and fixes whatever's wrong. So the games are too important.
Peter
The hope would be Sprout is in the rotation as well.
Rosenberg
Yeah. Because then if you, if you, if you sent Senga down, I guess your rotation would then be. You got McLean, Tong, Spielson, Peterson and Maniah. And then in Holmes, I think eventually is going to have to go to the bullpen too.
Alan
I agree.
Rosenberg
Because he's not giving any. He's not giving any length.
Alan
And in the playoffs you're going to need a guy that can give you three to four innings straight because you might have a game where a starter early doesn't have it. And in the playoffs, you don't wait. Like, if a guy doesn't have it, you know, let's see if you can work it out. No, now.
Peter
Or you risk. If you don't have someone who can give you some innings, you risk one of those grueling games in the middle of a series where now you've thrown off your whole rotation.
Alan
Or you tax your bullpen because you got to use a guy every time.
Rosenberg
McGill's supposed to come back.
Alan
Really?
Peter
Tyler.
Rosenberg
Tyler McGill's supposed to come back. I'd like to see him come out of the pen, but we'll see what they decide to do with Spro.
Peter
I believe that name is an error.
Alan
On the birth certificate by Lower.
Peter
Yeah, someone made a mistake.
Rosenberg
They.
Peter
Someone spelled Tyler wrong. Oh, Tyler. T, Y, L, O, R. And now this kid has been Tyler.
Alan
You know, it's like the bar's name is ty lower.
Peter
Tyler McGill, and they went off.
Alan
Is it Tyler? That's right. Ty Lower.
Peter
That's what we call it. And because. Because why? You've never met a Tyler in your life.
Rosenberg
I know. I can't say that I have.
Peter
Ty Cobb. Ty. Ris is an atrocity also, which is.
Alan
Why he went with Ty.
Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan
You know, but I don't know, you know, back.
Rosenberg
What was he born in, like, 1899? I mean, Tyler McGill. No, no. Tyrus just might have been. Again, they were named horace. We had 12 of them died. They probably didn't put a lot of effort in naming the kids because they weren't sure they were going to be on the Earth that long.
Peter
Right. It's all a complete.
Rosenberg
Don't name them. Don't have too many letters because they. Because the tombstone charge costs money.
Alan
Yeah.
Peter
We already have so many tombstones, so we got. We got Ma, Pa, Paw.
Rosenberg
Paw.
Alan
Paw.
Rosenberg
Paw Paw.
Alan
By the way, family's so poor, they just name their kids numbers.
Peter
Yeah, we're 38. We're gonna be dead in a year also, you know, we'll be dead by 40, so we got to have that set up.
Rosenberg
Yeah. Get it all set up.
Peter
There's a lot of tombstones you got.
Rosenberg
To have, like, they. Actually, I think. I think there were times back in the. In the 1800s where the. Where the. They probably did them both. They had the birth certificate and the death certificate right next to each other.
Alan
So because you never knew, you might.
Rosenberg
Just keep them in the Same drawer.
Alan
Hang on.
Peter
You flip the stick, flip it over.
Rosenberg
I love that. That would be great. See? Saves paper. Not that they were caring about saving trees back then.
Peter
Well, how are they even making paper?
Rosenberg
You remember, they would. They would take a whole tree down, make a toothpick. They didn't care.
Peter
But someone figured out how to turn trees into paper, by the way. That's impressive.
Rosenberg
Just at some point saying, I want to write something down.
Peter
How do you do that, though?
Alan
You ever take a tree down?
Peter
Have I ever taken a tree down?
Alan
Have you ever yourself taken a tree down?
Peter
Not even close.
Alan
What you've Don. You had.
Rosenberg
I have.
Alan
You've never handled a chainsaw in your life.
Rosenberg
Yes, I, I. There is something very masculine.
Peter
Sure.
Rosenberg
But you've done that about taking a tree.
Alan
Yeah.
Rosenberg
Matter of fact, I was at my buddy's house. He. He. He pulled down. He got his tree down.
Alan
Yeah.
Rosenberg
And I guess he miscalculated where it was going to land. Now it's on top of his garage.
Peter
Great.
Rosenberg
So, God, he flung a video of this. And me and him, we should have. This is about 20 years ago. Are pulling the rope to get the tree, not realizing that once this. Once the momentum and this tree starts coming off the. It's coming down, it's gonna fall on us.
Alan
Yes.
Rosenberg
So we're pulling. We're pulling in here come timber. And we're, like, driving out of the way because, listen, we're very, very fortunate to be alive.
Peter
Alan, you have a chainsaw?
Alan
Well, I have two of them.
Peter
No, wait, two.
Rosenberg
Yeah. Serial killer.
Peter
Yeah.
Rosenberg
What are you with Leatherface?
Peter
He's Leatherface. Allen Leatherface.
Alan
I have two shades.
Rosenberg
No, but why would he have. Why would you have two.
Peter
What do you need, two chainsaws?
Alan
One is a pruning saw way up high. You have to have the extender on it.
Rosenberg
Well, then that's.
Alan
But it's. It's a chain.
Rosenberg
What are you.
Peter
What are you using?
Rosenberg
What are you.
Alan
Pruning dead tree branches that could fall and hurt people.
Peter
Got it. So you have that many trees in your yard. Can you imagine what's going on?
Alan
You live by a preserve, so there's lots of trees.
Peter
And, and you're. How often are you taking out the old chainsaw?
Alan
In the fall, usually.
Peter
What about the big. The big one, though? That.
Alan
Oh, well, after a storm, some that might start to, like, go over or whatever like that, you got to take them down. You got to finish it. And the last storage firewood sometimes. But they. It's hard to really dry them out. You got to. You got to really dry them out to use them as firewood. So. But no, it. It's what you'll learn, though, is sometimes when a tree.
Peter
I will not learn this.
Alan
You should buy. If you're covered in that kind of sawdust. Yeah, it's. You can't get it off. I feel so good. No, it's something about it.
Rosenberg
It is pretty cool.
Alan
Something when that. When you start and you just start taking that tree down or you're cutting them. Cutting up the tree once it's down and it's just all over you. Smells good. Because it's like that fresh tree wood you.
Rosenberg
You nailed Alan a few weeks ago.
Peter
Excuse me.
Alan
You did?
Peter
Well, you didn't even notice. It wasn't that good. You're. You're.
Alan
You're.
Rosenberg
You're certifiable. You are very, very quiet. You're very quiet.
Peter
He's, by the way, new nickname is Leatherface Love. This man is out here chainsawing. How do you know?
Alan
I'm just saying. Oh.
Peter
Oh, I'm wrong.
Rosenberg
Before I started working with him, he would be the least likely to kill somebody. Now he's wiping out Steve Hart.
Alan
Am I moving up the chart?
Peter
Steve Hart. He's tied with Steve Hart. Yeah, he's right there.
Rosenberg
The next guy that's going to come in is to take care of chainsaws. Apparently.
Peter
Apparently.
Alan
You're saying that. That.
Peter
No, it's the way you described. Really?
Rosenberg
It was.
Peter
You feel that sawdust coming all over you.
Rosenberg
It was real. It was. It was way too erotic for what.
Peter
We were talking about. Yeah, I didn't expect.
Alan
Well, I was trying to get to how. How you get the paper.
Peter
So. Yeah, so.
Alan
Because. Because when a tree, sometimes when it snaps, when it cracks.
Peter
Yeah.
Alan
You'll get like a really thin piece of. Of the. The tree wood, like the middle of it.
Peter
And it's almost paper, like.
Alan
And it's almost paper, like. And you could see how that became parchment paper, which then became like, somehow they figured out what to do with it from there. But legit. Like, if you go back 500 years, you can look at that and go, yeah, I can write on that.
Peter
Basic technology all amazes me. The oldest stuff, cameras. Can't conceive of it. It's impossible for me how they came up records. You take the sound, you record it.
Alan
Sure.
Peter
And you slap it on the thing, and then when you take a needle to it, it projects the sound.
Alan
Insane, what you're doing right now.
Peter
Insane.
Alan
Alexander Graham Bell.
Peter
The man deserves all the Credit Agb if you're there.
Rosenberg
Not abt.
Peter
He's not on the ir.
Rosenberg
Like the Salem witch trials, you kind of understand, like, when wacky things happen back, they, like, magic's on the table. So when the person's like, listen, I just took your picture. Look insane, and you see some witcher, you'll be like, how did you do? Are you some kind of demon? Like, what's going on?
Peter
A picture.
Rosenberg
And then they explain to you how they did it technically, and it's completely over your head.
Peter
It makes no sense.
Rosenberg
Makes you want to, like, stay away from.
Peter
I know. Anyone can explain a record to me over and over again. It makes no sense. In fact, it's not as if, like, the MP3 is more impressive. Neither makes sense to me. In fact, I would say the record makes less sense to me. The computer, I can almost make more sense of.
Alan
Do you think that programming in code makes sense?
Peter
No.
Alan
The fact that it's just 0 and 1. Think about that for a minute.
Peter
No, no, It's. It's insanity.
Alan
But it's a whole combination of all that that suddenly makes sense. It's the matrix. No idea.
Rosenberg
I don't. I'm with Peter. But I do. But I am with Alan, where I think every once in a while, you do want to be involved in something, whether it's cutting a tree down.
Alan
You got to get out there, man.
Peter
I'm giving a hard time because he sounds like a psycho. I'd be interested, but, like, when? Realistically? Now?
Rosenberg
One day. City dweller. No, no.
Peter
One day. Now. One day there is a world Natalie and I have talked about because we have some concerns about the state of the world.
Alan
Suburbia, maybe.
Peter
Well, potential suburbia could be on the table. But even if we stay in Manhattan, do we one day move on from having a small place near the beach and maybe go upstate and get, like, someplace that's on mainland somewhere so at least we have one home that's not on an island.
Alan
Peter. Peter Poconos.
Peter
I don't know about Peter Poconos.
Alan
Peter Poconos up there.
Peter
Just Peter Croton on the Hudson. You know what I mean? Peter Westchester.
Alan
Shoot yourself a buck.
Peter
Shoot yourself a buck. Yeah, so maybe I'd cut a piece of wood down. Shooting a buck is not.
Rosenberg
He's not. He's not doing this is why.
Peter
With a bow.
Rosenberg
Even worse. We're getting close to that time of year. It's gonna be odd now that there's not gonna be anybody on the show to reprimand me for this, but this is why I shovel. I have a snowblower, and I save it for, like, when there's a foot. Anything less than that, I'm going out and shoveling because I just. I need to do something.
Peter
I would like the blower. I've never had one, but that sounds awesome.
Alan
Complete, Completely. Gonna just rev it up.
Peter
Oh, you love it.
Alan
It's It. I mean, if 6 inches of snow, 100% just going to rev it up, burn all the gas, well, what's the point of it?
Peter
Because then even if it's less than that. Right. If it's three inches, you have that annoying feeling of where it's the shovel scraping the sidewalk. That's not fun. Oh, you know, you guys will be happy to know this. I recently did get.
Alan
Whatchamacallit power tool.
Peter
A power washer.
Rosenberg
Power wash. Oh, that's it.
Alan
I got addicted to that.
Rosenberg
I need that because. Because with the landscape, we have a white fence, and it's like turning green.
Peter
Oh, yeah. Or my house was my house.
Rosenberg
You got to be careful with that. Are you gonna take skin off?
Alan
No. Because you'll be obsessed with it.
Rosenberg
Because you'll know you'll very satisfy.
Peter
Very satisfying.
Alan
Asmr.
Rosenberg
Buttle had one, and he was going like nuts on the house, and a bug landed on his leg, and he just instinctually, like, shot himself in the leg trying to get the bug off. And he, like, ripped skin off. That stuff's powerful.
Peter
Oh, you can't do that. They're different. There's multiple nozzles on it.
Rosenberg
I think, honestly, there's multiple nozzles. There's always multiple nozzles.
Peter
Always multiple nozzles.
Rosenberg
And Greg was the king of the nozzle because he decided, I'm going to go.
Peter
Can't do this.
Rosenberg
If you have it, like, on real, you could probably tear your high.
Peter
The highest level one. You can mess up your house, you can mess up your car. There's a lower level nozzle that if you want to wash your car, you would do. And then there's ones that are, like, for like, siding on your house. You go up a phone, right?
Rosenberg
Yeah.
Peter
But I felt like a man.
Alan
That's good. Satisfying twice a year, right? You do the. Your path. Pathway.
Peter
Yep.
Alan
And like Don said, on the. The fences, what I got to do.
Peter
The house is white, so you got to get those better. All right.
Rosenberg
So we were talking about again, so good on getting the job done. Is it. Is it. Is it the tipping his pitches well, the last two outings after the hole, I think he's tipping his pitches. He still is getting shot.
Alan
You want to hear these numbers? I just jotted down some numbers on Helsley that'll blow your mind. His era with the Mets. If I said 10 as an over under, well, it's over 11.45 and it's.
Rosenberg
Only like 14 innings.
Alan
14 earned runs in 11 innings. With the Cardinals, he had 12 earned runs and 36 innings, which is like.
Rosenberg
A three earned runner.
Alan
This is SNY had this stat which tells you all. So he has 3.5% of his career innings have been with the Mets. 3.5% his career earned runs with the Mets. 13.6% of his career earned runs. So 3.5% of his innings are the Mets. 13.6 of his career earned runs. This guy was not giving up runs like this.
Rosenberg
No.
Alan
Until he put on a Met jersey.
Rosenberg
Right. So now the question. Now the questions become, can he handle New York? Marlos Mendoza was asked, has New York affected him? I wouldn't say in New York, you know, like, this guy is a closer, closer, especially when you're that good, you know, for him, I mean, I think it's just. If anything, it's just the struggles, you know, but whether It's New York, St. Louis, whatever the case might be, big league players are going to go to stretches where it's hard, but I wouldn't put it on like New York. These guys built for him, so. Well, apparently not. Something's wrong, so I'm sorry. New York's on the table because it's a thing, even though it's not in New York.
Alan
Like he's. He's playing in Detroit.
Rosenberg
Yeah, but you're still representing New York. The pressures of being in New York. Listen, this pressure is everywhere. But you're in St. Louis. The crowd's usually pretty encouraging. Although they're really down on the team this year. They're not. Not drawing well. Is it this.
Alan
Do you mind if I say this, Don, without you getting offended?
Peter
Oh, wow.
Alan
Just try not to be offended and don't listen.
Rosenberg
This is almost impossible.
Alan
No, don't be offended.
Rosenberg
How can I not get offended?
Alan
I think it's different, the playing in New York thing, between the Mets and the Yankees. I think the Yankee thing, it's true. The Met thing, their fan base, they embrace you. They love you. Citi Field is a much different vibe than Yankee Stadium. Do they get frustrated over time? Yes, they do.
Rosenberg
I will give you that.
Alan
But he comes into Hell's Bells, the whole place goes crazy. Like he was welcomed with open arms. What pressure are you feeling compared to.
Rosenberg
Because there's different. There's different things. All right? Yeah. The crowd's part of it, but also it's. It's the intense media scrutiny. Right. Because there's more fans. So I don't know. Is he on social media? I'm sure he's getting destroyed there.
Alan
Are you really getting the intense coverage that used to get back in the day? Back in the day, though. It's not the same.
Rosenberg
It's not. But it's still different than what you're used to. Right.
Alan
If you.
Rosenberg
Because I listen. St. Louis is a baseball town.
Alan
Yeah.
Rosenberg
But you walk. I am.
Alan
Three baseball writers from one paper.
Rosenberg
Right. And. But here, you know, when they. And they travel. So in Detroit, you know, you're. You're seeing, you know, probably a dozen surrounding you. So after the game today, after another meltdown, he's probably got 12 to 15 people surrounding him, asking questions.
Alan
Yeah.
Rosenberg
What's going on? Like in other places, it's, you know, you have less media. They're probably not as. I don't wanna say mean, but they're probably not as biting. They're probably not as critical. The questions probably aren't as venomous as they are in New York because, hey, you were brought here to help the bullpen and you've, You've, You've made it worse. And, yeah, it may not be the Yankees. It's still New York. Right. You know, you feel that there's just a lot more media. There's just a lot more attention. You've got two. All sports radio stations. You've got how many newspapers, You've got how many people covering the team asking question after. You can't hide anywhere. I'm sure in St. Louis, after a bad outing, if he decided not to talk to the media, nobody was going to complain. If he doesn't come out to talk, there'll be five or six people that are going to be, you know, yelling and Ethan, where. Where's Helsley? Why is he not here? What's going on? Right. Because they're going to be ticked off. Why isn't he speaking?
Alan
There's.
Rosenberg
Yes, it's tougher for the Yankees than the Mets, but it's still New York. It's tougher for the Giants than the jets, but it's still New York. There is.
Alan
I get that. I just don't know if I want to go there as a reason why he's not performing up to par. Is it that he's a closer and he's not Playing a closer role.
Rosenberg
That's a possibility.
Alan
He himself said it. I remember at the trade, wasn't he the one that said he was surprised by the trade because they already have a closer? Yeah, he was. I believe he's the one who said that.
Rosenberg
You can't rule out the possibility that maybe he just doesn't have the stomach to play where there's gonna be a lot of scrutiny. Steve Phillips told general manager of the Mets. Not the Yankees, the Mets. I did shows with Steve. I got to know Steve, consider him a friend. He told me stories. He would get death threats. He wouldn't be able to go out to dinner with his wife when the Mets were struggling because the person at the other table be screaming at him, couldn't walk down the street. You'd. That happens in other cities. Yes, I'm sure it does, but not to the extent here. There's places that you can go in other cities and maybe not get that meanness that you might get recognized is.
Alan
A, like, that is one of the biggest.
Rosenberg
But there's probably more of a sense of, hey, you know, go. You'll get them next time. We still believe in you. I don't think they're, they're threatening the life of the general manager in St. Louis the way they do in New York. And listen, I'm not proud of it.
Alan
They're, they're so fed up with that baseball team in that town. They're not going to games and they, you always go to gates.
Rosenberg
That's what happens. But when they're mad, they just don't go.
Alan
Well, but they don't go.
Rosenberg
But in New York, they'll go and they'll scream. But if they see you out. That's exactly right.
Alan
If they see you out, though, you're going to hear about it.
Rosenberg
Yeah, but it's just, I, all right, I could be dead wrong. I've only lived in New York my entire life. I just know one of my good.
Alan
Friends covers the Cardinals, so I, I.
Rosenberg
I know, and I'm sure there's scrutiny, but it's not like it is in New York. And, and Steve Phillips, for most of the time, he's the general manager. He was good.
Alan
Mm.
Peter
The Cardinals are a weird example though, too, because it's like literally the life of the city and they're so used to winning there. Yes, but not every place is like that. Not every mid market team is St. Louis either.
Rosenberg
But when they're mad at the show.
Alan
So you're buying into the. On the table is that Helsley just can't handle New York.
Peter
No, I don't think that's the reason. I don't. But I do buy into the idea that New York is unlike any place else, and I think it keeps people away from this.
Rosenberg
And I'm also trying to fight him that it's not just a Yankee thing, it's a New Yorker.
Alan
I think it's heavier, there's different levels. But this is like. I just.
Peter
Again, it was bad for Soto and Queens.
Alan
In 36 innings with the Cardinals, he gave up 12 runs. In 11 innings with the Mets, he's given up 14. That's an incredible. Just flip of a switch. And all he did was just change addresses. Something else has got to be a play here.
Rosenberg
Well, and I don't doubt that.
Don Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Peter
I didn't listen to anything you just said.
Don Hahn
Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts.
Peter
Just made the list, buddy.
Don Hahn
This is the list with Don, Han and Rosenberg.
Rosenberg
All right, we got a dual list for you today because Alan came up with one that I think is hilarious. Mine's lame in comparison, but I do think this one will be controversial. People are going to be very upset. I, like, I might have done this list during the pandemic, Peter. But things age differently. You watch movies again and stuff. I'm gonna give you, since we're on the eve of football.
Peter
Oh, yeah.
Rosenberg
The top five football movies.
Peter
All right. Yeah, it is lame.
Rosenberg
But don't you see? It's gonna stir people up.
Peter
Yeah, no, no.
Rosenberg
Especially when they hear this.
Peter
It's only lame because it sounds like, so basic. But we haven't done it. Well, there's.
Alan
There's one that has to be number one, and if it's not there and it's a bad.
Peter
We haven't done.
Rosenberg
Yeah. Here. They'll chainsaw me.
Peter
Yeah, listen, you know, I think I should go back to our guessing days.
Rosenberg
All right, I'm good with that. Since he's all.
Peter
This is.
Rosenberg
This is. That's okay. Of him, too. Like, it is number one. I know.
Peter
I know what you call. I know what you. Mahal is going to be on it.
Rosenberg
What's your call?
Peter
Yeah, the one that you guys haven't seen it and you guys always talk about it. You and K. The TV movie.
Alan
The one that I.
Peter
The song.
Alan
Yes. Brian Song.
Peter
Brian.
Alan
Brian's Song's not number one.
Peter
Brian Song is on there for sure.
Alan
It's a bad.
Rosenberg
Listen, I. I am. I. I have Brian's Song at two.
Peter
Okay.
Rosenberg
The reason I don't have it in number one, it was a TV movie, so that takes a.
Peter
By the way. No, he takes a bit of a hit. TV movie is the definition of movie.
Rosenberg
Of Jason, let's be honest. So it is good.
Peter
That's true.
Rosenberg
It is good.
Alan
All right.
Rosenberg
And I've got it. It too. So hopefully you're not.
Peter
Where's. Where's Mr. Rudiger?
Rosenberg
Rudy.
Peter
Rudy Rudiger. Yeah.
Rosenberg
For me?
Peter
Yeah.
Rosenberg
It's my list, right?
Peter
Yeah.
Alan
Yeah.
Rosenberg
I got a number one.
Peter
Oh, yeah.
Rosenberg
My wife, that's always like. She'll. I don't know what it is about my wife. Is Stephanie like this? Is Natalie like this? She's not in the room. She's not in the room. I'm in the living room by myself. Kids are asleep. She's not in the room. So I'm slipping around. Rudy's on. I gotta watch it. Have to watch. I've seen it a billion times. I love it.
Alan
I agree.
Rosenberg
It's inspirational.
Alan
It's.
Rosenberg
I think the football, it's quality.
Peter
It's good. The football's good.
Alan
It stops surfing. That's a. That's a. Stop surfing.
Rosenberg
Doesn't matter where in the movie. Awesome. All right. Pulp. No. Kid spot.
Alan
Yeah.
Peter
Old school. There's good.
Rosenberg
Fellas.
Peter
Goodfellas, Casino. You just stop.
Rosenberg
It's just me. Rudy gets me. Yeah. All right. And then answer will come in the room and she'll be annoyed. And it's not like I'm. She's in the room. Okay. What do you want to put on? Like, I'm not keeping it on. No, she's annoyed. I'm watching it. For the billionth time, why you're not in the room. It's not annoying. You.
Peter
Let you be. Let me be.
Rosenberg
I listen, I get that. I'm not for everybody.
Peter
No.
Rosenberg
But clearly I'm for her.
Peter
She said yes a long time ago.
Rosenberg
All right, so this is kind of a hurtful problem, right?
Peter
Totally.
Alan
And she keeps coming back for more.
Rosenberg
She didn't leave it yet.
Alan
No.
Rosenberg
It's hot.
Alan
Rudy might put it over the top. You put it on one more time. She's walking.
Rosenberg
So Rudy.
Peter
Rudy won. We got Brian.
Rosenberg
When he finally gets accepted, he's sitting like, come on, come on. Stop.
Alan
There's so many. The five foot nothing, 100 nothing.
Peter
I know, I know. I know that. I think that Dom would include this one. It's underrated.
Rosenberg
He knows he's underrated by the.
Peter
Michael Scott appreciates this movie. There's only one cure for the Monday blues. Varsity Blues, Blues 3.
Rosenberg
Now, you might think it's corny.
Alan
Good.
Rosenberg
Because it's an mv. I love it.
Alan
It's good.
Rosenberg
It's.
Alan
I don't want your life.
Rosenberg
It's Van Der Beek. You know, I get it. It's great movie, all right. And it's an MTV production. But I'm telling you, it is really, really, if you listen, I was the same way. I'm not gonna watch this. It's stupid. It's an MTV movie. Look who's in this movie. Come on. James Khan's son. Come on. Stop it. But you get wrapped in. And the football's quality, like they're playing. They look good.
Peter
Yeah.
Rosenberg
And it's funny and it's poignant.
Alan
Ms. Davis, go to the prom with me.
Peter
By the way, that relates to. That relates to the other list.
Alan
Yes, it does. Yes.
Rosenberg
They did for Southern accents what the Departed did.
Alan
Yeah. For the Boston.
Rosenberg
It's way over the top.
Peter
That's way over the top.
Alan
That's your best take of the summer. That's your best take of the summer.
Peter
All right. And welcome back. If you happen to be in the car, you're listening. Baseball. You're here on Don, Han and Rosenberg. We're in the middle of our. Your time is perfect, and you're. Yeah. Great timing. Don is doing the greatest football movies of all time.
Rosenberg
Greatest football movies of all time. And so far, we've got Rudy at one, Brian Song two, Varsity Blues three.
Peter
These were guests in order.
Rosenberg
So you guys have done a great job. 4 and 5. And I'm telling you. 5. This could be controversial, but I will stand by this movie. But you. Any more guesses? Oh, yeah, yeah.
Peter
I'm not done.
Rosenberg
I got a lot of honorable mentions, too.
Alan
Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait. Would the Replacements make this?
Rosenberg
No, it's garbage.
Alan
Come on. That's a fun move.
Rosenberg
Even Jon Favreau's like, I didn't agree to this. He said, I'm not going to mention the movie. He thought it was going to be because it's on my list.
Alan
Any given Sunday.
Rosenberg
He thought it was going to be really good. And then next thing they're, you know, they're. They're dancing in the prison. No, it's called Any Given Sunday.
Alan
Any given Sunday is definitely on this honorable mention.
Rosenberg
Okay, I'm a fan. I am a fan. People pan that movie. I get it. But it's still a really cool movie. But I got it. How about Waterboy? I'm not. I'm not a fan.
Alan
No, no, no. Remember the Titans?
Rosenberg
No, I knew that wouldn't be there. That radio. VR. Marshall.
Peter
Stop it. Stop it. About Blindside. Stop it.
Rosenberg
Found out the whole thing is made up.
Alan
Now that we know the truth, that movie no longer holds water.
Peter
All right, so. So can you real quick? Give me. Give me era. Give me Eric.
Alan
No, no, no, no, no. The Philadelphia.
Rosenberg
You're on.
Alan
No, no.
Rosenberg
Invincible.
Alan
Invincible.
Peter
No, no.
Alan
What's the one?
Peter
Silver Linus Playbook.
Alan
No, that's actually pretty good too.
Rosenberg
You know, you're.
Peter
No, no, no. I'm just trying to see what he was guessing.
Rosenberg
That that movie was so corny. And then because it was Philadelphia, Andrew Gunling's like, this is the greatest movie ever. That movie was so irritating. What?
Peter
Everybody bond.
Alan
I understand that you put the man on the list because it's good. Anything. Anything's possible.
Peter
No, Varsity was a good movie.
Alan
It is a good movie.
Peter
But anything's possible for the Monday Blues. Varsity Blues. Real quick. I. I want. I want to know the era, because this is a lot.
Alan
Yep.
Rosenberg
Era.
Alan
Era.
Rosenberg
Fairly recent. And then back in the day. 70s.
Peter
Back in the 70s.
Rosenberg
He's on it. He's on.
Peter
Is he?
Rosenberg
Every time he's done that, you've been wrong. He's got it.
Peter
Every time.
Alan
You got Prison. Prison.
Rosenberg
Yeah. Longest Yard.
Peter
Original. Longest Yard. The original, yes.
Rosenberg
The remake's not bad.
Peter
That's fine.
Rosenberg
But the original is a classic and I've got Reynolds.
Peter
Burt Reynolds.
Alan
Santa's the remake. Burt Reynolds is the original, so.
Peter
Yeah, that's right.
Alan
So long as Yard's good.
Peter
Number five.
Rosenberg
Controversy with five. And I know people are gonna get irritated, but I'm telling you, watch the movie. It is outstanding. We refer to it all the time. Nobody saw it, but it's awesome. Refer to it.
Alan
North Dallas. 40 on. That's not even in consideration.
Rosenberg
Honorable mention. It's an honorable mention.
Peter
This is a recent movie.
Rosenberg
Fairly.
Peter
And we referrally.
Rosenberg
We. Because whenever this time of year comes up, I always refer to the movie. You'll know when I say it. You never. You might not even have seen it.
Peter
I might not have seen it. Alan, what do you think about.
Rosenberg
I don't know if Alan saw it, but I think it. I think it's tremendous. And every time it's on, I watch it.
Peter
I. Drama.
Rosenberg
And it's gonna be controversial. Yes, it's a drama. Very famous actor that's known for his sports movies.
Peter
Very famous actor known for his sports.
Rosenberg
Big time comedian. Also an actor is the coach. And it's a real team.
Alan
Oh, wait, he's on it. No, he's not on it. I was and then I wasn't. You're right.
Peter
He hasn't been on all day because.
Alan
A million movies are coming.
Peter
I know, I know, but hold on. You said big time comedian.
Alan
Yeah. When you said comedian. I had.
Rosenberg
But also actor. But he started out as a comedian. And he's the coach.
Peter
And he's the coach.
Rosenberg
And an actor that recently died young is in the movie as well.
Peter
And an actor that recently died young, big time comedian. Is the coach.
Alan
Yes.
Peter
Eddie Murphy.
Rosenberg
No.
Alan
Wildcats.
Rosenberg
Wildcats. Is deserving of an honor. It's the sport of king Better than diamond rings Necessary roughness got no love. I like that. More movie. Good. Scott Blackula, Cathy Ireland.
Alan
Bacula.
Rosenberg
Bacula. What is it? Bacula.
Peter
Anthony, you have any idea what this could be?
Rosenberg
No. You gotta get. You gotta get mad. You're gonna get mad. I'm angry, but I. I'm.
Peter
It's part of the common vernacular, like, that we talk about. I'm just.
Rosenberg
I always bring it up, but maybe, Maybe when I bring it up, it's over your head because you didn't see it. And I'm just talking to myself, now that I think about it, maybe.
Peter
Oh, man, this is tough.
Rosenberg
Especially talked about it when Zach Wilson was drafted.
Peter
When Zach Wilson was drafted. So is it. So is there a pretty boy? Is there a pretty boy?
Rosenberg
No, but it's like, why. Why wasn't he captain? Why was this ringing any bells? Anthony's on. Anthony's got it. Anthony got it. No.
Alan
All right, I think you should tell us.
Rosenberg
He stood. Oh, he wants to end the segment. I thought he stood up because he was involved. He stood up. He's like, all right, we're done.
Peter
I thought it's enough.
Rosenberg
And you have another list. And you know what's sad is that we're not really close to needing to break. He's just really irritated.
Peter
No, it's just taking too long.
Rosenberg
All right.
Alan
I feel bad for you here.
Rosenberg
You're excited.
Alan
I mean, I have, like, Draft Day.
Rosenberg
I love that.
Peter
You know what? I forgot about Draft Day.
Rosenberg
And I understand it's controversial, but don't.
Alan
Be mad because known for his sports movies, Kevin Costner. Kevin Costner done a million baseball movies.
Peter
Who's the young actor who died?
Rosenberg
The one that was Chadwick Boseman.
Peter
Chad Chadwick Boseman's in it.
Rosenberg
He plays a linebacker. I'm telling you, if you've never seen it, I think it's underrated. I think I like Started it.
Peter
I've never finished.
Rosenberg
Really gets into when. When you watch the. A lot of those things, actually, I think they did a really good job.
Alan
When he starts working the phones.
Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan
That's when the movie really hits. It hits at that point when he's now moving pieces and he's. He's like, mind. You know what. Ing the young GM and making him do. Like. There's a lot that goes on there that's really compelling. It takes forever to get there.
Peter
It's a hell of a list.
Alan
Takes forever. So. So your list is Draft Day, Varsity Blues, Longest Yard, Brian Song and Rudy.
Rosenberg
That's right.
Alan
Okay, so you don't have any given Sunday.
Rosenberg
Any given Sunday, North Dallas 40, which is classically great.
Alan
You don't have all the right moves.
Rosenberg
I. That. I love that. But it's.
Alan
You don't have Wildcats and you don't have the Best of times.
Rosenberg
I thought about the best of times. It's Robin.
Alan
Robin Williams vehicle. When you said comedy, I forgot about it.
Peter
I forgot about it.
Alan
Great movie.
Peter
Yeah.
Rosenberg
I don't have it on the list. And also Heaven Can Wait. I. I had as.
Alan
I never think of that as a football movie, but.
Peter
Yeah, but some. There are a lot of people out there. I know you thought it was Poe Dunk. A lot of people remember the Titans in Love that movie.
Rosenberg
Remember It's a true story.
Peter
No, it's. It's a true story. And it's.
Rosenberg
It's always we are Marshall, but I'm good.
Alan
We are Marshall's pretty good, too. Okay, well, that's all right.
Rosenberg
But this.
Alan
Well, we don't have time for mine.
Rosenberg
You're acting. Then we'll come back.
Peter
Maybe I'll do it on the other side.
Rosenberg
No, dude, you can do it.
Alan
No. No way. We could do it here.
Rosenberg
All right.
Alan
Go to the other side. Because it does relate to Varsity Blues in some way.
Peter
It does.
Rosenberg
So it does.
Alan
A very famous scene.
Peter
Is that song. Is there. Do you remember the song?
Alan
I. I don't have it. Because I think it's hot for Teacher. If I'm not mistaken.
Peter
It might be. It might be.
Alan
Wasn't it Hot for Teacher?
Peter
Don't give it away.
Don Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Peter
I didn't listen to anything you just said.
Don Hahn
Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts.
Rosenberg
You just made it this funny.
Don Hahn
This is the list with Don Hahn and Rosenberg.
Rosenberg
They're going to continue doing it because Alan has a list.
Alan
Now, to be clear. Because I show some humility.
Rosenberg
Losing confidence.
Alan
It's not confident. No, no, no, please, not this. This. I'm an expert. I'm just saying I never wanted this to get to the air. This was for fun in our little group chat. Because, like, it was. It was motivated by the fact that Def Leppard's anniversary. Def Leppard's Hysteria was on the Billboard charts today, 1988. The first of three straight weeks at the top.
Rosenberg
And I.
Alan
And I, featuring the anthem. Pour Some Sugar on Me. And Don replied.
Rosenberg
And anthem.
Alan
Yeah.
Rosenberg
How did I reply?
Alan
Stripper music is what Don said.
Rosenberg
I'm a big believer.
Alan
Which. And then Anthony replies, interesting list idea. So bang, your fault, Anthony. I'm sitting on the train going, well, I got time to kill. And I just said, okay, here's my top five. You know, gentlemen's club. Gentlemen's club. We all know.
Rosenberg
Champagne Room soundtrack.
Alan
There you go.
Peter
There you go.
Alan
So here's number five. GQ, west side, late 90s.
Rosenberg
Can't do it Too good.
Alan
This song came on and you're just like, it's. It's go time.
Rosenberg
I don't.
Alan
I don't. And whoever's coming out is top shelf liquor.
Rosenberg
Listen, I. I just. I believe this list should be pejorative.
Alan
You can disagree.
Rosenberg
I think this is too quality. I'm not saying it doesn't get played.
Alan
It's a high end club we're talking about.
Peter
You're saying it's beyond that, though it shouldn't be limited.
Rosenberg
It's a good song.
Alan
Okay, but I'm giving you memory.
Peter
I can barely hear it.
Alan
Then if you don't like that one, you won't like number one. Number four.
Rosenberg
Guys, a genius. Stop it.
Alan
Nine Inch Nails, Closer.
Rosenberg
Yep, I get the I Get again theme. This is too good. Okay, but that's me, sure.
Peter
But this, to me, this.
Alan
It'll get cheesy, I promise.
Peter
But this one here, like, I don't.
Alan
It's intense.
Peter
I'm not a big purveyor of the. The gentleman's club. And I believe you that it works there. I don't hear that. And hear that though.
Rosenberg
Fair enough. But these next three are money.
Peter
Yeah, these ones, you do hear it.
Alan
But yeah, I'm going from memory and experience. That's different Gossip, Long Island. All right, so number three.
Peter
This is Warrant Warren.
Alan
And we all know.
Rosenberg
She's my cherry pie.
Alan
Cherry piece. And we all know how wrong this is. And whoever comes out in whatever. Whatever the costume is, you know, it's all wrong.
Rosenberg
Well, let Me tell you, but it's there.
Alan
It's.
Rosenberg
They wrote this for that in mind for the club.
Alan
Yes.
Rosenberg
I mean, if you see the video.
Alan
Yeah, it's.
Peter
Yeah, that's. That was what the plan was.
Alan
Right. All right, so number two, then. As Don said.
Rosenberg
Right.
Alan
Correctly, as we all know, this is almost a cliche club song.
Rosenberg
This is.
Alan
This comes on and, you know, it's still early in the night, but it's just getting started.
Rosenberg
This is when Def Leppard took a turn for me.
Peter
I don't think I know him before this.
Alan
This album is one.
Rosenberg
Is this, you know, high and dry?
Alan
Yeah. No, they had. You have to, you know, Pyroman. Pyromania has been sampled.
Rosenberg
But like the first two albums and then all of a sudden, again. Stripper music.
Alan
Yeah. Then. Then it just got. Then they just.
Peter
I hear you, man.
Rosenberg
Pour some sugar.
Alan
Yeah. It just. Yeah. So. All right, last but not least, a.
Peter
Lot being said there.
Alan
The most obvious. And speak of a song that was literally not just made for the club, but made about the club.
Rosenberg
Right.
Alan
I mean, he's naming some of the famous clubs around the country. It's just obvious, but it's. And then he names the songs.
Rosenberg
Another Molly Crue took a turn. First two albums. Amazing. And then it just became.
Alan
They also decided they want to just make money now.
Peter
Yeah. I thought Motley Crue, that's all I think of too, is videos now.
Rosenberg
I. I think.
Alan
Yeah, that's the video.
Rosenberg
You gotta get some.
Peter
As a kid, I'm trying to understand. I'm. I'm seven years old. Trying to understand why are the videos filled with all these hot half naked ladies? And then also all these men dressing look like the hot half naked ladies. What the hell is going on?
Rosenberg
They want the ladies so bad that they decided to make them.
Peter
They want to be like.
Rosenberg
It's a whole LA glam scene. I just never. Poison another thing. Poison.
Alan
Yeah.
Rosenberg
Awful.
Alan
This was about making money at that point, because MLE Crew, when they first came up, they had pentagrams and they were like devil music. And Shot of the Devil was their second album, which was a great album, but the problem is you don't make a lot of money that way. This is where you get your radio play, not shout at the devil. So they did. And it's. How's it working out for him? Is Dominic.
Peter
How's it working out? That's the thing. Yeah.
Rosenberg
So anyway, so your soul.
Alan
So there's the list I could. Now there's one that John Winthrop mentioned that I Now is a good one. Mad at myself for not thinking of it, but I wanted to give him credit. That's Lenny Kravitz. I mean this two notes in it screams like.
Rosenberg
Okay, not the Guess who version.
Alan
It's got to be the Lenny Kravitz.
Rosenberg
You remember who was in the video for this? And she's.
Peter
Isn't this from.
Alan
Guy, I thought this was from.
Peter
Oh, no, no, no. This is from.
Rosenberg
I don't remember what it's from, but Mike Myers.
Peter
Austin Powers.
Alan
Austin Powers.
Rosenberg
But in the video it's in her prime. Heather Graham wasn't Heather Graham.
Alan
No, she was in the other. Okay. No, you're right.
Peter
Heather Graham was really a moment in time.
Rosenberg
You could probably find some white snake too.
Peter
White.
Rosenberg
White Snake was big at the clubs.
Peter
I mean, that name's a mouthful.
Rosenberg
It's a certain demographic.
Alan
Going to leave it there.
Peter
Well, we covered a lot today. We've done it all, I guess.
Rosenberg
So many places I could go.
Alan
You just see what happens when we're on the app.
Rosenberg
Only dropped the topic bomb and now I can't talk. Yeah, now I can't talk further about the white snake analogy.
Alan
Well, their. Their video was. That video was pretty good. Yeah, so. And by the way, I meant to be for the air, but Don insisted, so there you are.
Rosenberg
No, everything's meant for the air. It's just a matter of whether we can get away with it.
Peter
We thought this would be.
Rosenberg
We'd be alright, but we're already back on 880, so.
Alan
You're welcome.
Rosenberg
File your complaints with the FCC. 1-800-919-3776. Want to get into the Mets? Helsley can't get the job done. We got Carlos Mendoza talking about that Soto. I got some things to say about Juan Soto as well. It's Don Ana Rosenberg taking you up until 7:00 clock here on ESPN New York.

Don Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Alan

Later, the trio lightens the mood, riffing on the most iconic football movies of all time, and the all-important "Gentlemen’s Club (Stripper) Anthems" list.

This hour is a quintessential DHR experience: hardcore Mets/Yankees reporting (Helsley’s collapse, coach/media pressure, and pitching puzzles) paired with unfiltered, hilarious detours (chainsaws, masculinity, and iconic club rock). The list segments—Don’s top football movies (with fierce debate and sharp NYC takes) and Alan’s tongue-in-cheek strip club anthems—bring variety and laughs, with tons of music and movie hot takes to incite arguments at your next tailgate.
Recommended for: New York sports obsessives, movie/rock fans, and anyone who loves irreverent, thoughtful radio that’s as likely to break down a bullpen as it is to break down Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me.”
