Don LaGreca
Fellas, you know Degree Cool Rush deodorant, right?
Allen Hahn
Well, last year they changed the formula and guys were mad about it. One dude even started a petition. So guess what? Degree heard us, admitted they messed up and brought the original Cool Rush scent back exactly how it was. And it's in Walmart, Target and other stores now for under $4.
Don LaGreca
So grab some and remember why its.
Allen Hahn
Cool, crisp and fresh scent made it the number one men's antiperspirant for the last decade.
Don LaGreca
Degree Cool Rush is back and it.
Allen Hahn
Smells like victory for all of us.
Peter Rosenberg
This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Don LaGreca
That sounds like heaven to me.
Peter Rosenberg
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers.
Don LaGreca
402 in the big city. Don Lagra, Allen Han.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, we really need to like you pick up.
Don LaGreca
We are at Stout. Come on, it's game five. These are the people that are gonna be taken to the streets. Or when you get a clap on the street.
Peter Rosenberg
It's early. It's early. It's early.
Don LaGreca
Game time is brought to you by Telemardu Irish Whiskey. Because when it's game time, I thought.
Peter Rosenberg
I thought, I thought. You're so much better.
Don LaGreca
Well then what you. But then read it better than I'm gonna do it.
Peter Rosenberg
I want Don to do it because Don does it better. Because Don, when it's game time, it's. That's what I'm talking about. That's what I'm talking about. The Knicks are looking to close out the Pistons tonight. Coverage of Game 5 at 7 is on 10:50am why? Because the Mets are starting a series with the Diamondbacks and coverage immediately follows us on 880 at 6:30pm so again, if you're on the radio, it's on 10 50. But of course the ESPNY app is where you only need to keep it. Yankees continue their series with the Orioles at 6:35. This is a big one, Don. The Devils trying to avoid elimination game 5 in Carolina at 7:30 telemore do the original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Telemore do or try the new Telemore do, honey, during tonight's action.
Allen Hahn
Oh yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Glasses up to enjoying till the more dew. Responsibly.
Don LaGreca
Well done.
Peter Rosenberg
I mentioned it just in the previous segment and I am curious to just take the temperature here a little bit. It is the Tom Thibodeau stuff and it's the whole idea of the minutes police. We've all heard this Frank Isola Was on Michael K earlier. He's coined that phrase. It's. Who are the old school basketball fans here? The people that you've watched basketball for, like for years. I don't ever remember fans being so caught up in how many minutes a player is playing. Not to where it's too many, but sometimes for players, sometimes it's not enough, right? It's always for a player. I remember saying, Mason only played 16 minutes. That's not enough. I need Anthony Mason out on the floor more. He didn't play enough. I never said, oh my God, Patrick played 45 minutes. Oh my God, how's he going to play his next game? I never as a fan thought that way. So we get to the playoffs now and if you look at all the box scores, what do we see? The star players are playing 39, 42, 43, 45. That's what you do. Do you think anybody that's ever trained, if you're an athlete, do you think that you just ease your way through a season and then when the playoffs come, you go from averaging 33 minutes a game to 45 minutes a game and nothing physically happens to you? You got to be conditioned up to it. And that's something Jalen Brunson has talked about and no one wants to listen. All the fans want to believe that that's the right way. You got to protect your players. They shouldn't play a lot. That's how they get hurt. They get worn down. How many people have told me this? He grinds his players out. He wears them down. How does that, how does that even make sense when you have his favorite player, the guy he leans on the most in. Jalen Brunson, who only gets better in the fourth quarter, who's averaging the most points in the fourth quarter in the playoffs this year and in his nick career is over a point per minute player in the fourth quarter and overtime since he's come to this franchise. Can you guys make sense of doesn't make sense.
Don LaGreca
Don't you feel like it's kind of over? Like I really haven't had list? You're closer to it than me. But I don't think people are talking about it the way they were earlier.
Peter Rosenberg
Not in the playoffs, no, but they were all season. As if it was a fireable offense and all he does is get his star players ready to play big minutes and to get play through fatigue, to play through it to a point where you are, you, you're tougher and you're able to handle it and it's not this whining about, like, I had to deal with this. So again, The Lakers played five players a whole second half the other night, and LeBron James is one of them. Forty years old, out of one side of mouth, you're talking about how mar you marvel at LeBron at 40 and all the things he can do. Then the other side, you're like, boy, you can't play him 45 minutes. Hang on a second. He was making unbelievable defensive plays, but he made a couple of bad offensive plays. We're going to blame that on fatigue or just blame it on the fact that he made a bad play. Like, I don't understand how this always becomes a topic of conversation that players just can't play.
Don LaGreca
But is that really what Nick fans feel, or is that just the anti Tibbs crowd and that's their piece of ammunition and they're going to hammer that home. And whenever the team struggles and if, God forbid, they got bounced in the first round and they get swept against Boston, it'll come back again. I just wonder if we're giving this more air than it deserves. Is this really what Nick fans think, or is it the very vocal minority of Tib haters that are always just going to hammer that point home?
Allen Hahn
Well, it's the thing to say about him. When things don't go well, it's the best thing. The two things you have against Tibbs are he's never won the big the big one on his own as head coach, and he plays his players a ton of minutes. And supposedly other players around the league are aware of it, and people don't seem to rate him that highly.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Allen Hahn
So that is a thing that exists for sure. So I just think when things don't go well, it's the default thing to go to. Now, right now, things do look good for him. Now, ironically, the only person who seems to be struggling with anything appears to be Brunson. Repeatedly, which we know his minutes are have nothing to do with tibs. That's who Jalen Brunson is. He's a guy who wants to play 45 minutes every single night if he can. And he's now been sort of on and off dealing with that ankle, but everybody else seems to be in good shape. This is exactly what you want. Did you want.
Peter Rosenberg
There's no one on the injured list. He left the game and everybody thought his series might be over. The way he got up off the ground and the next day was not on the injured list. No, Nick is on the injured list.
Allen Hahn
Mitch is fully healthy. OG's good. Everyone appears to be available in good to know. You couldn't have asked for more.
Don LaGreca
And if somebody gets hurt, is it always because they play too many minutes during the regular season? Or maybe they just happen to get hurt? People get hurt.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes, it does happen. It's just like I said, it's one of those. One of those things that's annoying to me about the coverage of the team is that it always faults back to that whenever things go wrong versus maybe sometimes a player just didn't play well.
Don LaGreca
But this kind of goes back to the last conversation about expectations. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Don LaGreca
So you put expectations on Tibbs, lead me to a championship. If you don't, then it's typical Tibbs. He didn't win the championship in Minnesota, didn't win a championship in Chicago. Are you putting unfair expectations? Was the idea of getting Thibodeau as the head coach to win you a championship or get you back on track? I think it was to get them back on track and then, yeah, hopefully eventually get to a championship, which I still think is on the table. He's not that old of a guy where now all of a sudden the clock is ticking. I still think there's young enough players. This is still year one to me of this current roster of players.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
But, you know, why has it always kind of go back to, well, he didn't win, so get. Get rid of him. Was that ever the expectation, Allen, to win a chance?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Yes. I think when you. Whenever you start a new regime, I think Darren Muji and Aaron Glenn with the jets, you think their goal is to just get good. Oh, they want to win a champ. Everybody wants to win a champ.
Don LaGreca
Just because you're impatient, that means now you've got to speed up this process. Right. Everybody comes in and nobody knows what the timetable is. It's not like tenure in teaching. Well, I teach this many law this. This many years, and I get a tenure and I can move up here. No, it's not that way. It might take three years, it might take five years. You might have to pivot like they did this off season. All right, we had a roster. We don't think it's good enough. Let's make a trade. And now, because you make the trade now, everything is in the 20, 25 basket. The same thing with, like, Met fans. Oh, well, they got Soto, so they got to win the World Series this year. Why does it have to be this year? He's got 14 years left on his contract. Why is it about this year they made a trade to bring Karl Anthony, Towns and Bridges here. Why does the championship have to be this year and it's a failure? Why? Because of the, the self imposed expectations that now the team has to live up to. Was that their expectation? Does, does Leon Rose look at this as a failure? Does he look like that they're, that the pace is slowed, that they're not moving in the right direction?
Peter Rosenberg
I will give you what Jalen Brunson said. Last year when the playoffs ended, he was asked if the season was a success. He said, did we win a championship? Did we make it to the finals? And the response was no. He says then it wasn't a success. And that's how he looked at. They look at it as that. And so I think it's the mindset's there. Which by the way, you know, as I think I said this at the start of the season, we aren't far removed from the days when it was can they make the playoffs? Can they get out of the lottery? Can we stop talking about losing at the end of season? Like the, the idea that the Knicks are now in the conversation as one of the top teams in the league, they are one of the elite franchises in the NBA. Again, that is an accomplishment that has been made in a five year span pretty quickly.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, right.
Peter Rosenberg
So that's stage one. Like you said, stage one is to get out of the suck and get to elite. They are an elite franchise in the NBA. They are run well, they have great players, they're competitive, they are well coached, they're in a big market. There's everything you want, you've got. Now the question becomes how do you go from this stage to get that chip that they've been waiting on time. And fans will always say, I've been waiting since 73, even though some of them are like 30 years old. But I've been waiting since 73. Everybody's been waiting since 73. But I'm with you. This is not a one year window. This is not the mellow year. When Jason Kidd and, and Sheed and all those guys came in and they thought, let's just go for it in one year. This is a window of at least three years starting here. And you're trying to get it done in this window.
Allen Hahn
Right?
Don LaGreca
And, and what people don't want, they want the quick fix. They want the instant rice, of course, put in the hot water and serve. Well, it doesn't work that way. And you look at the championships that have been won recently and the journey that it takes to get there.
Peter Rosenberg
Denver, it took them 10 years. Right.
Don LaGreca
It takes a long way. Or just even recently in New York, you know, you go to the 96 Yankees, it took losing to Minnesota, losing to Seattle in 95, and then winning in 96 or even when they won in 2009. Right. Look at, go through Joe Torre in the first year, missing the playoffs, and then they finally get back and then they win the World Series. Or you look at the 86 giants and losing to the Bears and losing, losing to the 49ers in 84, losing to the Bears in 85. And guess what? Second round both those years. And then you took, you know, the jump. I mean, the chapter and verse Rangers win the Presence trophy. You bounced in the second round in 92, missed the playoffs in 93 with Messier.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Don LaGreca
And then the next year they win the Cup. I. So it's all part of trying to get there. And sometimes you got to take a step back and you. And you're disappointed, but it helped you take three or four steps forward the next year. I, I just think that we live in a world now where it's like, all right, we made a trade, now go win me a championship. And if you don't, failure.
Peter Rosenberg
But here's the.
Don LaGreca
Make a trade.
Allen Hahn
When you fire the coach, when you.
Peter Rosenberg
Get a guy like Messier, immediately it becomes, well, you get a guy like that championship. Right now, you're expecting it when you draft somebody like Patrick Ewing. Championship. When you sign Aaron Rodgers. Championship. Right. That's all those things that word associates with those players.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So I'll ask you, let's do word association. If I say at this point, what you've seen from Jalen Brunson, because every player, every team's got to have the guy that makes you feel like we can win a title. Right. Giannis in Milwaukee, they believe they can win a title because of what he became. So if I'm telling you the Lakers went and got LeBron championship. So if I'm saying Jalen Brunson, are you looking at a player and saying championship?
Don LaGreca
Yes, I am. I think he's got all of the abilities to take a team to a championship.
Peter Rosenberg
What are they?
Don LaGreca
Well, the ability to score in the fourth quarter, to carry his team to will his team to victory.
Allen Hahn
Availability generation.
Don LaGreca
He's constantly able to play, give you the minutes. Seems like he's a team leader and just has all of the elements that you need to get you there, but you can't do it by yourself. But it's a major piece that they have in place.
Allen Hahn
When was. How often does a player does a point guard who plays the way Brunson plays lead a team all the way to glory? Because. Because Steph isn't a fair comp for anyone. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
He's not.
Allen Hahn
But he doesn't drive to the basket. He doesn't get.
Peter Rosenberg
He's. He's a prolific shooter.
Allen Hahn
He's the best shooter. Shooter of all time.
Peter Rosenberg
Of all time.
Allen Hahn
So. So besides Steph, we saw Iverson make it to the finals and get beat up pretty bad by la.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Allen Hahn
Who else is in that comp? Because Iverson's probably the best.
Peter Rosenberg
Ch. Chauncey Billups, though, a little bit bigger.
Allen Hahn
Little bit bigger.
Peter Rosenberg
There's a guy that kind of led that team. They had a lot of great pieces, but he made all the shots that matter. Chauncey bills, he's Mr. Big Shot. Mr. Big Shot. Well done.
Allen Hahn
But. But at the same time, didn't have nearly as much on his shoulders offensively.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Allen Hahn
Rip Hamilton probably was the primary option for them.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Yeah. And.
Allen Hahn
And they were holding teams to 88 points a game.
Peter Rosenberg
Defense was the story.
Allen Hahn
So it's it. So even though I believe Brunson has absolutely has championship metal, it is hard to picture players like him leading people to the problem.
Peter Rosenberg
That's why I asked the question. It's tough because normally it is the, the six, nine or seven footer, but in this league you're always looking at like in Giannis, who is a Greek freak, literally freak of nature athlete, who, as he developed, you just started to say, well, this guy's unstoppable. And when you have a player like that, you can win a championship. You know, it's why Kevin Durant keeps bouncing around, because teams look at him and think, I can win a championship with a guy like that. Look at Nikola Jokic, a seven footer who's an all world player who does everything, but he's a seven footer.
Allen Hahn
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Think about all the different champions. And we've had a different champion. Now how many years in a row? I think it's what, five years in a row that you've had a different champ. And each one of them, the main piece has been a LeBron, it has been a Giannis, it has been a Jokic, it has been those type of people. And that's why I asked that question. You believe in winning a championship and you have a championship window. When you have that one guy on the team that you either drafted, acquired or found, that becomes that that guy can win a championship. And that's why I ask, do people truly believe that Jalen Brunson, his stature and you don't even hesitate, Doc.
Don LaGreca
No, I. That's exactly who you need. But there's also players around him, and I could also understand that's important. I can also. I will have the conversation with people. Is Tibbs the guy to get them the chip got him on track. But is it at least a legitimate question, Alan? Is it a conversation? Is he the right coach to get you the championship? I think he can, but I do think it's a conversation.
Peter Rosenberg
And don't you think it's important that Brunson thinks he can? Yeah, because if Brunson's your main piece, if he's your Patrick Ewing. Right. If that's. What if. If he's your. What Melo was. If he's your, you know, Walt Frazier, it was Red Holtzman that he believed in it. Patrick believed in Pat Riley and then Jeff Van Gundy. You know that like, you have to have that connection. And it is without question that Brunson has that connection to Tom Thibodeau believes in him. And that's something that. As long as that exists, I don't think you question it.
Allen Hahn
Do we also add. Real quick, Sardon, just also add, though, that. Yeah, the cat piece of it. Like, we're not asking this to happen with just Jalen Brunson. He is the offense and that's that.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Allen Hahn
Cat when he's in his own. Is it, Alan? He's a prolific offensive player. One of the great Monica said on the call the other day, this may be the best shooting big man of all time.
Peter Rosenberg
He's talking about, yeah, him and Dirk, but. Right, him and Dirk Nowitzki. Seven footer. Yeah, right. Those are two guys that can shoot the lights out at their side.
Don LaGreca
But I do think that we put so much onus on the championship. I think all you ever ask as a general manager is to get players to give you the opportunity be in.
Peter Rosenberg
The game to win. Right. Have a shot.
Don LaGreca
Doesn't mean you're gonna. Because you know what? It's still really hard to win and things can happen and guys get hurt, and there are things that are beyond your control. Like this year, like, who knew Cleveland would take that huge jump? And that was something that was not part of the process, you know. So is Josh Allen not a winner because he hasn't won a Super bowl yet? He's a hell of a quarterback. But you know what? He's unfortunately, unfortunately got maybe A slightly better quarterback and a slightly better team that just always seems to be in his way. You know, maybe in another era, the Knicks would have rattled off two, three championships if Jordan wasn't in the way.
Allen Hahn
Right.
Don LaGreca
I mean, or Olajuwon.
Peter Rosenberg
They think about it, right? That's like. It's funny too, in Nick history when you look at it, The Knicks in 69, they ran into the Celtics. They could just couldn't beat the Celtics. They lost to him in 69. And Richard hit the call. They lost in game seven. He gave us the whole history of it. But what happened after that year was that Bill Russell retired. Even, even Clyde told us that, like, you know, once he retired, we knew the door was open, but it was just trying to finally overcome that team. Him retiring opened the door and they wanted 70. Well, in 93, the Knicks ran into Michael Jordan for the umpteenth time and couldn't get past him. But what happened after that summer? He stepped away from basketball. The door was open. They 94, they went to the finals. That was supposed to be their championship, but they could not get past in game six.
Don LaGreca
Gave it a hell of a try. I just think, I know some teams make it look easy. The, the Yankees made it look Easy. In the 90s, the Chiefs and the Patriots have made it look easy in the NFL, like there's some team, obviously LeBron, wherever he went, there's certain teams.
Allen Hahn
Warriors.
Don LaGreca
The warriors just kind of made it look easy.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, they're always in it.
Don LaGreca
You know, the Lightning made it look easy winning back to back out. The Panthers right now just seem to be in some sort of vortex now where they're difficult to beat. And that means all the other teams have to kind of figure it out, you know, but there's only a handful of those teams. Everybody else is just trying to, To. To take advantage of the few opportunities you get.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, think about right now.
Don LaGreca
That's the process the Knicks are in.
Peter Rosenberg
Think about Milwaukee is probably going to lose Giannis this summer.
Don LaGreca
Right?
Peter Rosenberg
Right, Probably. But you can't cry because you drafted him, you developed him, you got a championship out of him.
Don LaGreca
That's it.
Peter Rosenberg
And if he wants to go because he doesn't see a future, so be it. Right.
Don LaGreca
Worked out.
Peter Rosenberg
But you got your championship out of that. It wasn't like lost when Patrick ended up in Seattle because they, they couldn't come to the grave. They finally had to move on. That felt like it was like that it's over. And he was your hope every year that you could win a Championship. And once he left, that hope left with him. And I think that's the hope. You always are looking for that next player that gives you that hope. Like what you have with your commanders. You have hope because you got Jaden Daniels, but you may not.
Don LaGreca
It may never happen.
Peter Rosenberg
So having the guy that gives you hope, and that's why I asked about Brunson. Is Brunson the kind of player that gives you that kind of hope?
Don LaGreca
That.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, as long as that guy's on our team, every year, we're going to be in it.
Allen Hahn
But that's also why, you know, even as I. Even as I said earlier, I wasn't heartbroken over losing to Philadelphia in the championship game because. Because of that hope and it coming out of nowhere. You do also go, though, man, making it deep in the playoffs doesn't happen often.
Peter Rosenberg
Don't waste the opportunity.
Allen Hahn
Don't wait like we were there. The fact of the matter is you did get there. And so the Knicks aren't at that point yet. But if, like, they were to somehow, for example, steal game one in Boston, win the series, steal game one in Boston, you got to start dreaming about it, because it's not guaranteed every year that you get to a situation where you're leading the best team in the league in a playoff.
Peter Rosenberg
I think the dreaming starts if they can finish the series tonight. Because if they take care of business tonight at the Garden especially, look good in this series. Big, like just. Just. Not even big, just.
Allen Hahn
Just like, just confident beginning to end.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, three minutes to go. You kind of like, okay, they got it, like, under control. And then the crowd starts to have the crescendo. If you can do that here, I truly believe there'll be a renewed belief about. Let's go. Bring them on. Like, you will get a. We want Boston. You will get all that stuff in the building tonight because that's what winning does. Lose tonight and have to deal with this hole, go back to Detroit and all that stuff. I think the crisis in confidence continues.
Don LaGreca
Well, of course, because you got to take care of what's in front of you. If you can't take care of what's in front of you, what are you thinking about? You know, two, three steps down the road. So let's. And that's what I said when I'm evaluating this series. Like, listen, I know they're good enough to make it out of the first round. I know they're better than the Pistons. So why. Why am I living and dying every single game? So all could be forgiven, win tonight, win easy, rest some guys in the fourth quarter, blow them out, sit there and then we'll see what happens with Boston in Orlando. Hopefully that goes a little bit longer and then you take on the Celtics and see what you can do right now.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's do it.
Don LaGreca
Let's make it happen.

Allen Hahn
All right ladies and gentlemen, we are live at Stout on a big nick clinching Tuesday, hopefully and I Can't Take It Tuesday is special today because we have someone with us. So I think we all, we all could take every single day if she was a guest, if she if she was just a member of the show.
Peter Rosenberg
Speak for yourself, Peter.
Monica McNutt
I love it. Thank you.
Peter Rosenberg
There are some days I can't take. Can't take Monica McNutt a little much sometimes. Hi guys.
Allen Hahn
Hi Monica.
Monica McNutt
What's up? Hey people. Hi guys.
Allen Hahn
I had the pleasure of being sent as I am. It feels like almost Every day by my wife to go do returns at FedEx on Sunday.
Monica McNutt
Huh.
Allen Hahn
And so I was in the car as this game went down the stretch, and I had the pleasure of hearing the dulcet tones of Monica McNutt call a big, big Nick Wynn. You're crushing it.
Monica McNutt
Oh, man. Thank you.
Allen Hahn
You really. And I love watching the videos. My favorite thing about watching the videos is. Exactly. Well, no, because we have a thing on this show. You probably don't know this much.
Monica McNutt
Okay, tell me.
Allen Hahn
We do a thing on this show where when color commentators step on their plate by play, we crush them. We play it back. We have people. We. Our favorites, like my. My boy. Well, our boy. No one worse in the world than the great London Fletcher in Washington steps on every call. And so I love getting to watch Monica, who's like, you could see her physically holding in the words till it's time, and then bam. Yeah, you knock out of the park every time.
Monica McNutt
Yeah, I appreciate that. It has been a focus for sure. And working with the terrific Pat O'Keefe who hosts our studio shows last year was a different experience. And working with Don a little bit. Don, right? Mixed in a little bit. And then, of course, Tyler Murray has asserted himself on the throne this season. It's been a different experience working with each guy. And Tyler in particular is so good. Like, he just got. He has a big voice, but you really gotta let him get the call out because he's gonna crush it. And I would hate to be that infamous play by or color addition that ruins a call.
Allen Hahn
And so you never are.
Monica McNutt
You never.
Peter Rosenberg
But that is. But in all honesty, that is something that you have to recognize early. And you did. And I think the videos allow you to. To hold your mouth shut, yet your energy still comes out.
Allen Hahn
That actually is a good tool. You see it?
Peter Rosenberg
It's great. Yeah. Oh, but funny thing is, is, though, is I. When I called game three with Mike Breen, I thought about it. I. Boy, he was like, this quickly. No, I went like this with the phone.
Allen Hahn
I was like, oh, we're not filming it.
Peter Rosenberg
This game's getting. This game's getting pretty good about filming. You're on. No, I didn't even do anything. I just had my phone out and I'm in my head, I'm like, what would he think if I. So I went to snap my kids. So, you know when snap, the video comes up. So I just am holding it and right away he's like, old school.
Don LaGreca
Oh, I thought he was down from stepping on it.
Monica McNutt
Yeah, that's what I thought.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Allen Hahn
The camera. He would never dare step on the call.
Don LaGreca
Oh, he comes from Michael K. Wants to pin guys up against the wall.
Allen Hahn
No, no, no. I mean, Alan would know better than not to step on Mike Green's call.
Don LaGreca
Mike doesn't know that.
Peter Rosenberg
Truth is, I forget to speak because when he's calling the game. And, Monica, I know you called the game of Mike.
Monica McNutt
You're like, mike. Mike is sitting next to me.
Allen Hahn
Go ahead.
Monica McNutt
Where's my popcorn?
Allen Hahn
By the way, you just reminded me of one of my favorite early stories at being in New York. So glad. Glow in the Dark. And we're gonna get to Can't Take It Tuesday in one second. But we're off the rails as always. Can't Take It Tuesday. We're coming up. But Glow in the Dark tour, the. The Kanye west tour back in the day. And I got a phone call from a. From an artist, Consequence, who was like, will you DJ my show? We were very tight at that time. I don't know if it's the concepts, the name drop, but the djing at the Garden deserves a name drop. So. So, you know, the name drop hasn't even gotten there yet. So it was one of the coolest couple of days of my life, Right? I'm new to New York. I'm just finding myself, and now I'm going to DJ on the stage at the Garden. So I hang out. This is the days of the flip cam. I have my flip cam with me. I'm standing backstage. I have all access. And as you can imagine at this time, this is pre. This version of Kanye West. No controversy yet. This might even be pre Taylor Swift. Like, this is just. He's on top of the world. Everyone is showing up to this show. I'm standing backstage, and Jay Z and Beyonce walk into the room. And at this point in time, I am very bold.
Monica McNutt
Wow.
Allen Hahn
And I am always with my flip cam. And I just hold up my flip cam and start filming Jay Z and Beyonce walking towards me and Jay Z like, cat, damn. Darth Vader walks up to me and just holds his hand up and lowers.
Peter Rosenberg
His hand to me.
Allen Hahn
And I just organically just take my camera. I'm like, I'm sorry.
Monica McNutt
This is the appropriate response.
Don LaGreca
I'm gonna put down.
Allen Hahn
I shouldn't have filmed the queen, right?
Don LaGreca
And no confirmation. He might have been sterile for a year.
Allen Hahn
I don't know.
Don LaGreca
I don't know. I don't know. All right, so.
Allen Hahn
So I'm gonna. I'll set it off here so Monica can get the vibe. Even though I know you know, and I, I alluded to this earlier. My can't take it Tuesday. I cannot take the Bill Belichick relationship anymore, bro. I, it's, it's, it needs. Someone needs to step in here. I'm saying it right now. Six Super Bowls, 10 appearances, the greatest coach we've ever seen. You could still kill your reputation. Okay? You have enough time at 73, where if you don't get this thing back on the rails and, and say, hey, it was lovely, I had a good time. I'm gonna now coach this football team, try to sort of make the most of what's left of my career. This guy could absolutely pull. Play himself on an international scale. Who is going to be the friend? Does he have a friend who can say to him, my guy, enough is enough? I can't take it. I saw her on the field with him. I thought that was bad. Now she's cutting off interviews. It's pretty crazy when he's talking. Bill, I've never been a fan, but I'm trying to help you. I cannot take it. End this relationship and save your reputation, for God's sake. Oh, there are some perfectly wonderful 45 to 55 year old women you could be with who aren't going to show up at your job.
Monica McNutt
Yeah, I feel that passion.
Peter Rosenberg
You felt.
Allen Hahn
It didn't.
Peter Rosenberg
And I know you see, this is how we set the tone. Can't take it Tuesday.
Monica McNutt
I love it.
Allen Hahn
What are you not feeling these days, Monica? Oh, man.
Monica McNutt
Okay, so I was going to do a little spin on the words and like, can't take it in a good way. But let me go to my. You could do any. Well, that's, that's culture that you and I hear first. I'm gonna do my real. Can't take it. And I know this is a little sensitive, but I can't take the officiating in this playoffs.
Allen Hahn
Go ahead.
Monica McNutt
I just think it has been far too much of a storyline. It is taking away from the brilliance of these teams, these athletes, these coaches. And I get it. When you're talking about officiating, best case scenario, we say nothing about you. Right. And so I get it. It's a thankless job. Well, let's get to that because I feel like we've slapped. And Han and I were talking about this the other day, we've slapped physicality on it, and then when it matters, we don't want physical. And this is not just this particular series that we're all interested in tonight in Game 5. I'm thinking I'm looking at it at large. I think there are moments, even last night, Rockets, warriors, where it's just out of control. Like, it's. To me, it's just out of control. And so I would like to see higher quality officiating so that we're not thinking about that, because we've gotten some really great series. Well, not that many, but we got some really great plays. And I just think this is a stain on it all.
Peter Rosenberg
I love that take because it's something that we've talked about, Right. It's like all of a sudden being able to just, you know, just throw a forearm into someone's face.
Monica McNutt
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
That's a screen. Well, playoff basketball. And it's that. No, that doesn't make it good basketball. And it does take away from the game. And when you say, well, that's how they played in the 90s, you always get that reference from the announcers. This is 90s style basketball we're seeing. And I'm like, I was there. That ain't it.
Monica McNutt
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
We didn't play like that. Like it might have looked. At times it got physical because someone got a little, you know, you know, too much of a box out. And we're going to have it out because back then you knew I could throw a punch and maybe I've only missed a game. But it wasn't as if you were just literally grabbing, grabbing someone and walking them across the court in the screen. No one set screens like that. You held your ground on a screen, you fought through hard on the screen, but there was no holding, clutching, grabbing. There was no one jumping over your back to get a rebound and not being called. What Duran did to Hart, by the way, where he throws his hip into heart, his heart's going up for a rebound, he knocks him down. No call. Like, those are dirty plays. That's not 90s basketball. That's not playoff basketball. That's bad basketball. And we're allowing it to happen.
Allen Hahn
And it puts you in a bad spot because you allow it to happen for 47 minutes.
Monica McNutt
Yep.
Allen Hahn
Now here's the end of the game and Josh Hart now all of a sudden makes contact. But it was an egregious contact. But if you're a Pistons fan, you're certainly upset by it. Yeah. So you need it. It's just not going to work that way. You cannot change the world.
Don LaGreca
This is the to tamp down all they will let them play crowd.
Peter Rosenberg
But what about.
Don LaGreca
Let Them play.
Peter Rosenberg
But what about hockey, Don? Is it different? Is hockey suddenly more physical in the NHL? Do they call less power penalties? Is it so egregious that the game now just becomes clutch grab and grind and not as free flowing, entertaining as the regular season?
Don LaGreca
You might let a little bit more go because of the importance of the moment. I, you know, I think you got to be in the moment, the series. I think any player would just ask, just make it consistent so I know.
Peter Rosenberg
How to play the game and I'm.
Don LaGreca
Well, you're gonna call in the first period or the first quarter, I mean, call it in the fourth, Call it game two, the same as you called game one. I want to know how to play. I don't want to have to scout the officiating as well as the other team. And if I think, Monica, if you keep it consistent, you can live with it no matter how it is.
Monica McNutt
I agree that there is a little level of spice in the postseason, but I think when you're watching a game and you're like, oh, the refs have lost control of this one, that's a problem. That's a problem for both teams in my mind.
Peter Rosenberg
What do you think is going to happen tonight? Do you think because of what happened at the end of the game, will this game be called Tighter or will the Pistons get away with all the stuff that they've been getting away from most of this series and kind of open it up instead of, I don't know, I want to say a makeup call kind of deal? But what are you expecting out of the crew tonight? You got Mark Davis, you got Jason Goble, and you got, I think. Is it. Travis Ford is the third.
Monica McNutt
Oh, Travis Ford, my guy. This is what I think is going to happen. This is, I think initially they're going to be trying to tamper down all the physicality, but by the second half, bets are off.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, like, I think it's closing.
Monica McNutt
Yeah, like obviously everybody's gonna be sensitive to three point shooting, especially late in this ball game.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah.
Monica McNutt
But to a degree. And this even in this series. And I think, I wonder if you guys feel the same way. It feels like the Knicks have gone back to who they were last season. And I don't know if you credit the Pistons for bringing that out of them. I guess you do, because that's a great point.
Peter Rosenberg
That's a great point you're making.
Monica McNutt
But they like my whole thing in this series is like, physicality is cool, but if you're, if you're the Knicks and we've seen it. All you got to do is get past that first huff puff. We're gonna blow your house down. Physicality, and then make the defense defend. Right. And that's what they've been able to do. And so I think they've responded. Even when we were. What was game three was the first one in Detroit. This team is not really reckless, gonna start a fight. But the little huffing and puffin, I think it was good for team morale and, like, bonding, closing ranks. And so I think they'll probably try to call it close or whatever. First half, Jamie Bickerstaff is on the refs from the jump ball.
Peter Rosenberg
Like, I felt like he was too emotional in those two games.
Monica McNutt
Oh, my God.
Allen Hahn
At the end of four, he was really.
Monica McNutt
But Keith, like, from the tip, though, y'all. From the tip, dude.
Don LaGreca
But explain this to me. How is that good for his team? They want to play physically. Begin to complain about the officiating. Doesn't he want it to be no calls?
Monica McNutt
Irony, right?
Don LaGreca
So that you can now be that physical team. If they're going to start calling things, the Pistons have no shot.
Peter Rosenberg
But it's controlled emotion, which is what Tom Thibodeau always says. And for. For jb, you had a young team. The last thing you want them to be is, like, too jacked up, especially in a. That was. You were there for two games. That building was loud.
Allen Hahn
I have to get.
Peter Rosenberg
It was incredible.
Monica McNutt
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
The atmosphere at Little Caesars, by the way, Don, I don't know what. What hockey's gone on in that building, but they're saying in Detroit that those two games were the biggest games ever played in that arena.
Don LaGreca
Oh, yeah, because the pistol. When was the last time the Red Wings any good? No, no, they have been.
Peter Rosenberg
They.
Don LaGreca
They've been awful. They haven't done anything since the Joe so that.
Peter Rosenberg
That the LCA finally had, like, some real. Real, like, action. It was loud in there, and it was loud. Very, very good.
Allen Hahn
Monica. Let's talk about what matters for a moment.
Monica McNutt
What matters?
Allen Hahn
How are you feeling about this beautiful stadium in Washington, D.C. that we're gonna host a Super Bowl?
Monica McNutt
So I'm a newlywed, love my husband, but he's, like, giving me all the details yesterday, and I was like, I'm sleepy. I can't keep up with all this. I'm excited, I promise.
Allen Hahn
Did you see the rendering?
Monica McNutt
He has not. Yes, we've seen the rendering. We've talked about the 8000 parking. We've talked about the pro rideshare situation. We've talked about using the Metro to get back downtown and all of the things that we're pumping into the Washington, D.C. metropolitan ecosystem in support of this new arena.
Allen Hahn
It's going to be, I mean, just relative to the dump that was FedEx.
Monica McNutt
Field, I think very fondly and even in this playoff run. Sorry to sidetrack my New York folks, but I thought a lot of my grandparents who were no longer with us and they were season ticket holders and they had the stories of the original RFK rocking and being drunk to stay warm and like the whole bit. And so I'm, I'm excited.
Allen Hahn
Let me ask you one obligatory question.
Peter Rosenberg
This DMV update was brought to you.
Monica McNutt
Anyway, one question.
Allen Hahn
We have a lot of guests. It seems like a lot of our guests are in my crowd. Huh? We had legs on a couple weeks ago talking about big commander's guy in your family who was the obligatory Cowboys fan. Was there a cowboy hater?
Monica McNutt
My mom's sister's husband, my cousins and my uncle.
Don LaGreca
Oh, the whole squad.
Allen Hahn
That whole squad.
Monica McNutt
My aunt never really dabbled one way or another, but the whole. Yeah.
Allen Hahn
It's like in every D.C. family, there's always one section.
Monica McNutt
I dated a Cowboys fan for a while. I should have known that wasn't going to work.
Allen Hahn
Wow. You really should have. And, and how is, how is raising the puppy going?
Monica McNutt
Well, his full name. His name is colloquially Lucky. His full name is Douglas Jaden Jackson.
Allen Hahn
Oh, my God. Same middle name as my daughter Hunt.
Monica McNutt
Okay, but.
Allen Hahn
And I'm guessing for the same reason.
Monica McNutt
And Douglas, come on, tell me why. Wow. Okay.
Allen Hahn
You doubled up.
Don LaGreca
We got.
Monica McNutt
We got Doug Williams.
Allen Hahn
I couldn't name her Doug.
Monica McNutt
We got Jaden Jackson or Jaden Daniels. Excuse me. And we got. We call him Lucky. But his full name.
Peter Rosenberg
Wow.
Monica McNutt
Commanders all day.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay. Did we get through this, Don? Did we.
Allen Hahn
Last August, did we get through this?
Peter Rosenberg
We knew the commander's thing was going to happen. Take it Tuesday. By the way, this is my. Can't take it.
Monica McNutt
It too.
Peter Rosenberg
Can't take enthusiasm.
Allen Hahn
Well, no. And also hearing about. Hearing about a. Hearing about a team. Good. It's hard. You got a Jets fan, you got a Giants fan. All they can do is talk about.
Peter Rosenberg
Their stadium that looks like an air conditioner with no roof on it because.
Don LaGreca
You know, weather in New York, the big Phoenician line.
Allen Hahn
I know the Met. MetLife is so bad. I, I feel bad cuz WWE has SummerSlam for two nights there this year. And like I, I feel bad when I was like, yes, SummerSlam is coming up. I'm like, oh, we're going back to this dump again. I hate met life. I mean, there is nothing. It is a totally fine place. Once you're inside to sit and watch a game, it's totally fine. But there's just nothing appealing about it beyond.
Don LaGreca
Because that when you. At the time when you spent $1.6 billion, totally fine was the objective. Yeah, I think they actually put that on the blueprint.
Allen Hahn
This will be totally fine.
Peter Rosenberg
This will do well. And this will do.
Allen Hahn
I was just. I was just in allegiant. I mean, that place is crazy. It's incredible. Dallas is incredible. Allegiant is incredible.
Don LaGreca
Minnesota, Atlanta.
Allen Hahn
Minnesota is fantastic.
Don LaGreca
I didn't even get to go inside. Just driving outside. So what about Monica?
Peter Rosenberg
You've been in Sofi so far. That place in la, right? So far.
Monica McNutt
Stunning like, just stunning like. And slap on some California weather and sunshine.
Allen Hahn
That adds a bit. Bit too.
Monica McNutt
Like what?
Peter Rosenberg
So there's my other. Can't take it Tuesday. I can't take it that when all these new stadiums open up around the NFL, I keep having to go back to MetLife Stadium and stare at it and go, is it old enough yet to replace?
Monica McNutt
It's charming.
Peter Rosenberg
When is it getting old enough to replace?
Allen Hahn
And that's the thing. It'll never be charming either.
Peter Rosenberg
Never.
Allen Hahn
So, like, it hovers between nothing. Charmless. And to your point, Allen, you're stuck with it. At least.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, got 10 more. At least 10 more.
Allen Hahn
Well, FedEx. FedEx is now up to like 26. No, 28 years. Yeah, it's basically gonna have like a 25 year run.
Peter Rosenberg
But didn't the Texas Rangers just get a new baseball stadium like 20 years later?
Don LaGreca
I think the Braves went from Turner Field to the new place in 17 years.
Peter Rosenberg
Can't wait to see something.
Allen Hahn
But what would they do with.
Don LaGreca
I don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, what do they do with. With Brendan Byrne Arena.
Monica McNutt
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
What's. What's the eyes?
Don LaGreca
No, I think it's TV studios.
Peter Rosenberg
There you go. All right. So you figure it out.
Don LaGreca
Wow.
Allen Hahn
Well, I'll be there in three weeks for Cowboy Carter.
Monica McNutt
I was just about to say, I'm debating if I'm going to try to scramble to get there for Cowboy Car.
Allen Hahn
What do you mean? Debate it? What do you.
Monica McNutt
Well, it's a long story.
Allen Hahn
It's not.
Monica McNutt
I mean, it's not really a long story. I just didn't. I. If I had to choose my big concerts this summer. It's Kendrick.
Allen Hahn
Oh, for Beyonce.
Monica McNutt
Yeah. And I love Cowboy Car.
Allen Hahn
I love cowboy.
Peter Rosenberg
Did you hear that?
Allen Hahn
I don't love gnx.
Peter Rosenberg
That was very judgy.
Monica McNutt
I just. Oh, maybe I did Renaissance. We did renaissance.
Allen Hahn
Oh, I didn't do Renaissance. And so I missed.
Monica McNutt
And it was the whole thing.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Allen Hahn
Well, we'll continue this offline.
Monica McNutt
Yeah, I mean, if you got tickets, let me know. I'll join you.
Allen Hahn
Oh boy.
Peter Rosenberg

Podcast Summary: Don, Hahn & Rosenberg – Hour 2: Monica McNutt Joins the Show
Introduction In the April 29, 2025 episode of Don, Hahn & Rosenberg, hosts Don LaGreca, Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg delve deep into the current state of the New York Knicks, focusing on coaching strategies, player performance, and championship expectations. Joining them in the second hour is special guest Monica McNutt, adding fresh perspectives to the discussion.
1. Tom Thibodeau's Coaching and Minutes Management (00:08 – 07:05) The conversation kicks off with a critical analysis of Knicks' head coach Tom Thibodeau's approach to player minutes. Peter Rosenberg raises concerns about the "minutes police" phenomenon, questioning the necessity and impact of managing player time excessively.
"It's always for a player. I remember saying, Mason only played 16 minutes. That's not enough. I need Anthony Mason out on the floor more."
Alan Hahn counters by emphasizing the importance of conditioning players for playoff intensity.
"The only person who seems to be struggling with anything appears to be Brunson... everybody else seems to be in good shape."
Don LaGreca adds that injuries are part of the game and not solely due to minutes played.
"And if somebody gets hurt, is it always because they play too many minutes during the regular season? People get hurt."
2. Championship Expectations vs. Patience (07:21 – 12:10) The trio discusses the high expectations placed on Thibodeau to lead the Knicks to a championship. They debate whether these expectations are justified or if they stem from impatience among fans and management.
"But why has it always kind of go back to, well, he didn't win, so get rid of him."
Peter Rosenberg highlights the mindset of expecting immediate success with star players.
"This is a window of at least three years starting here. And you're trying to get it done in this window."
Alan Hahn emphasizes the need for patience and acknowledges Thibodeau's role in building the team.
"He has all of the elements that you need to get you there, but you can't do it by yourself."
3. Jalen Brunson: The Catalyst for a Championship (12:11 – 15:43) A significant portion of the discussion centers on Jalen Brunson's pivotal role in the Knicks' aspirations to secure a championship. The hosts compare Brunson to NBA legends who have led their teams to glory through exceptional performance.
"He has the ability to score in the fourth quarter, to carry his team to victory."
Peter Rosenberg questions whether Brunson possesses the same championship-caliber presence as players like LeBron James or Giannis Antetokounmpo.
"Do people truly believe that Jalen Brunson, his stature and you don't even hesitate, Doc."
Alan Hahn compares Brunson's leadership and shooting prowess to other great point guards.
"He's the best shooter of all time."
4. Historical Comparisons and Building a Championship Team (15:43 – 20:09) The hosts draw parallels between the Knicks' current trajectory and past successful teams like the 1996 Yankees or the Denver Nuggets, emphasizing the long-term process required to build a championship-winning franchise.
Don LaGreca (17:04):
"Why does it have to be this year? He has 14 years left on his contract."
Peter Rosenberg (17:04):
"This is not a one-year window. When you draft someone like Patrick Ewing, championship."
They stress the importance of sustained effort and strategic planning over immediate results.
5. Transition to Monica McNutt’s Segment (23:56 – 41:48) In the second hour, Monica McNutt joins the show, bringing a fresh dynamic to the discussion. The trio shifts focus to officiating in the playoffs, with Monica criticizing the current standards and their impact on the game's quality.
"I can't take the officiating in this playoffs. It has been far too much of a storyline."
She elaborates on how poor officiating detracts from the athletes' brilliance and the overall excitement of the games.
"No, that's not it. That's bad basketball. And we're allowing it to happen."
The conversation then touches on specific games and the emotional responses of referees, with Monica advocating for more consistent and higher-quality officiating to preserve the integrity of the sport.
