Game time is brought to you by Telemardu Irish Whiskey. Because when it's game time, guys,
Peter Rosenberg
it's totally time. There finally. Isn't that what I thought we decided? I thought we had decided.
Alan Hahn
I thought so too.
Don
And yet there was.
Alan Hahn
I'm boycotting anyway. I'm out.
Don
You know what? I don't blame him.
Alan Hahn
Out.
Don
The way you were abused by me the other day.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, he deserves.
Don
You deserve it.
Alan Hahn
No, you deserve it. I'm out. You don't want effort. You don't want effort.
Don
So you want an effort?
Alan Hahn
No.
Don
Well, no, Peter was the lack of effort. You were just not good at it.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I mean, I'm proud of the
Alan Hahn
lack of effort at least. You know what though? I give you, I gave you an effort.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
And you still couldn't at least appreciate.
Don
Now, now we got nothing. Now we got like five seconds of nothing.
Alan Hahn
Right? So this is what you want. This is what.
Don
No, that's not what I want. I want Jake.
Peter Rosenberg
That's what you want.
Don
The audio. I want you guys out. The next host of Thunder in an exhibition game. Coverage begins at 6:30 here on 880. The Devils host the Maple Leafs at 7 and the Islanders visit the Ducks at 10. NHL. Why are you hating on the island? Make them go out west in March.
Alan Hahn
Killing me. Killing me.
Don
But at least I got something to watch Tullamore do. The original triple distilled, triple blended and triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Tullamore Dew or try the new Tullamore Dew. Honey. During tonight's action, glasses up to enjoying Tullamore due responsibly. Always a pleasure to welcome in Monica McNutt. 4 o' clock is hers during basketball season or after. Football season is over on Wednesdays and she joins us on Don on the Rosenberg. How are you?
Monica McNutt
Hi guys. I'm great. I, I.
Alan Hahn
Okay.
Monica McNutt
The exhibition thing threw me for a loop, but I think I'm up to speed on the bit.
Don
Well, we're just, I'm exaggerating, but come on, man, this should be a big deal. Thunder, Knicks is a big deal, right? We knew from the end of last year that these two could be a preview of the NBA Finals. And yet they're playing at the garden at 7 o' clock on ESPN in the second of. Back to backs for both teams. Both had played on the road the night before. You got Mike Brown saying, we could win, we can lose, it doesn't matter. I mean, come on, man. I want to enjoy a game and I will, despite what everybody's saying. But the regular season can't be this meaningless, Monica. But yet everywhere you turn, you're being told by the people that are playing in it that it doesn't matter. And it frustrates me.
Monica McNutt
I do understand this. I do understand this, Don. But I think who said to us the other day, where were we?
Don
On the road?
Monica McNutt
Somebody actually did acknowledge the regular season. I mean, listen, first of all, it's gonna matter because you gotta get your seed. Like, duh, you gotta play well in the regular season. I think in this era of guys looking ahead and the 65 game rule, I get how that has become the commonplace response, but we know that's not entirely true, right? Like, we get it. This particular matchup, yes, it's two of the NBA's best teams, but they'd have to go through a lot before they run into each other again in the postseason, potentially. But this matters. It matters to the fans, it matters to the city. I think it matters to the New York Knicks players. I don't know what Mike was talking about.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I feel the same way, Monica. Like, I feel like across sports, if you have two of the best teams in a conference that could be in, in football, in basketball, in hockey and baseball, those games matter. When there's some of the best teams in the league, in theory, you always want to show out to some degree. And I don't know, it's just, it's odd you would think that particularly with a team like the Knicks, who, even if they're not the best version of themselves, are a marquee market. It's just, I see where Don's coming from. It's an odd. It's an odd thing, but.
Don
But is it too, a little Monica? Isn't it kind of like, you know, I was going to break up with you anyway? Kind of like that. Listen, just in case we lose, don't freak out too much. Everything's going to be okay. So is it more preemptive by Mike Brown to say it doesn't matter?
Monica McNutt
I Think that that is a kind assessment, but I'm. Whoa, watch your language. I think that's crap, though, because the one thing that I do enjoy about Victor Wembuyama is he's not ducking no smoke in no press conference. He wants to win every game he goes out and it matters to him.
Don Hahn
Right?
Monica McNutt
Like preemptively knowing your team has a shortcoming.
Don
So what?
Monica McNutt
The shortcoming is an opportunity to get exposed. I mean, the Raptors been smacked on by the Knicks four times last year, but when Darko Rakovic was asked yesterday about the opportunity to play a good team, which they haven't beaten, he was like, I love it now. He could have been lying his ass off. I don't know. But the energy of each opportunity mattering because you're trying to get better. Like, I don't think anybody needs to be coy about that. Y' all make a whole lot of money. Fans in the entire city want to know you care.
Don
Alan, I love the fact that she was concerned about crap but then just threw her ass out like it was no big deal.
Alan Hahn
Listen, listen, this is, this is what we do when we bring people on the show, right? Like we, they come around us and, you know, things loosen up a little bit. That's what we like to see. We want it unfiltered. Yes, but I, I, I, I get that part. And that's Don, Peter and I were talking about this at the start of the show, just about that frustration, right? Other leagues there is the big game feel. And then you have a game like last night, NBC does the throwback broadcast. And last night, because of various injuries and other things, that's just an awful game, a 30 point game. And fans are getting fed up with this product. But from a Knick perspective, and we were just talking to Tim Bontemps about this, I'm wondering if you agree, Monica. The regular season feels like it just is really a ramp up to getting to where it's going to be. Judgment Day. You can't. Like whether. I think what Mike's trying to say is, if we beat them, I still have to prove. We still have to prove we can win. When we get to, if we can get to a conference final, we have to prove we can win in the playoffs because that's why I'm here and the previous guy isn't. Doesn't it feel like that? Like this next season, as much as we want to look at games and measuring sticks or freak out about a loss or get excited about a win, we all know none of it matters until we see the results of the spring.
Monica McNutt
I hear you on that, Han, but I think along the way, I don't want to hear a coach say it doesn't matter. You can tell me that this game is not the end all be all, but I don't know if I want to hear the words it doesn't matter. From the day, it's like, no, it does matter. Right. And I would argue to you that even though that is true for this organization, if we zoom out and make this a league wide conversation, why do you think everybody up and on with the ball tanking like they want it to? They want it to matter. And so I get it. Yes, we came into the season with high expectations of this New York Knicks squad. And Mike Brown is completely spot on. You were brought here to get this team over the hump, which is back to the NBA finals. But I think you should be a little more mindful of all that goes into getting through an 82 game regular season when you have the opportunity to discuss it. The facts are though, you're right. The championship is not going to be won tonight at the Garden. But as I like to go back to last year, every game is an opportunity to get better or get worse. You practice yourself.
Alan Hahn
All right, so what is it about the knicks over these 19 games that have four very loud losses and 15 wins that we just sort of go, okay, on to the next one? It's very strange, but that's what we're doing right now. But still, what is different, tangibly different that you're seeing from this team?
Monica McNutt
I think that there is a defensive identity emerging. It looks better on nights where you have Mitchell Robinson, but I do think there is some pride and communication developing on that side of basketball. And for as much as things were attempted to change, they stay the same. The reality of this team in terms of their productivity, they've got to be able to hit threes. Jalen Brunson has to play well. And from there you tell me how it falls in line. I'd like to see more of big nights from car. Anthony Town's baseline double double for him. But after that, like if you give me good three point shooting, this defense that's rated in the top 10 and Jay, the plays well, like you got a shot. That's. That has been the formula.
Don
How concerned are you about the Celtics? The.
Monica McNutt
The intangibles concern me about the Celtics, y', all, because they've been there and I don't. You either got experience or you don't Like, I can remember being very frustrated with that statement early in my career, but it's real, right? And they have experience, and they have a very clear hierarchy. And seemingly, from where we sit, there is no consternation, if you will, in the locker room over roles, because everything seems to be very clearly defined and clarity is love and communication, and that's what they got going on.
Peter Rosenberg
Now let's get to the important subject here.
Don
Monica.
Peter Rosenberg
Been enough dilly dally. Let's be honest. We've been playing enough games.
Alan Hahn
Let's.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's get down to brass tax.
Alan Hahn
Don't.
Monica McNutt
I think this might be where I let you down, but go ahead.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, did you get a chance to watch Wayne's World?
Monica McNutt
I did not. That's why I was like, I'm going to let you go. I know, guys, Wednesday totally snuck up on me.
Peter Rosenberg
Comes at you fast, right?
Alan Hahn
I mean. I mean, I had a road trip where there was lots of downtime.
Don
Oh, yeah?
Peter Rosenberg
What'd you watch on the flight?
Monica McNutt
Here's the thing. Here's the thing. So I'm in my reading era, so I'm trying to get off screen. I'm reading. So I was reading on the flight. But honestly, when I agreed to it, I really thought I was going to watch it the next day because we had an off day. First of all, when I get an opportunity to sleep, I don't deny myself that. So I slept, then I worked out. Then I ran into some friends, and I looked up and, like, the day was gone. So I'm going to work on it. I will report back when I get to it. We got another long road trip coming up with long flights. I won't read the whole flight. All right, Don, you know, I forgot we're streaming, though.
Don
I feel like it's gonna be Damian Woody.
Peter Rosenberg
We're looking at Woody part two. Maybe that's.
Monica McNutt
No, no, no, no, no.
Peter Rosenberg
You're the new Woody. You're gonna be the new D. Wood. And by the way, listen, I love Damian. It's almost like it seems like maybe this is the thing. The more we love the guests, the more they hate us and disrespect us, Don. Maybe that's how it goes. And since we all love Monica so much. No, maybe we're gonna have a nice, toxic relationship. That's what I. That's the path we're on. Yeah.
Monica McNutt
No, no, no. Listen, listen. The flights on this fast road trip were short. Little, like, I'm a lock in and read.
Peter Rosenberg
Right? You can't really get in it Four
Monica McNutt
or five hours on the way out to the West Coast? No. So you got more time? I like our chances.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, I'm down.
Don
I'm down.
Alan Hahn
West coast, right? I could see Monica in LA going. Go outside in the sun. No, I'm going to sit inside.
Peter Rosenberg
I gotta watch Wayne's World. I gotta watch Wayne's World.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Monica McNutt
You better catch me on the flight, though. Cause you're right. Competing with that LA sun gonna be tough, right?
Alan Hahn
When your agent calls and says, let's go in Manhattan beach, like, no, I'm watching Wayne's World.
Don
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Sorry. I got my.
Monica McNutt
My woman of my word.
Peter Rosenberg
My local yokel radio hit. I do every week. I gotta. I gotta make sure these goofballs leave me alone.
Don
These New York goofballs.
Alan Hahn
Silly movie.
Monica McNutt
That's funny.
Don
What's the most.
Peter Rosenberg
What's the most. What's the most intriguing thing happening for you outside of New York Knicks basketball in the NBA?
Monica McNutt
Oh, well, that's a great question. Honestly, for me, it's just going women's basketball and whether or not we're going to get to a WNBA season. What happens March 10 with all the CBA stuff and then how.
Peter Rosenberg
And how is that. How is that looking? How is that looking, by the way?
Monica McNutt
You know, it's looking a little bleak, if I'm honest. I think we're in a really dope time in women's sports, and you guys all got women in your lives. You're sports guys like. So I'm sure that you can appreciate it. But I think it is. This is really delicate because the WNBA sets the table for the way that other women's leagues go about negotiating their collective bargaining agreements. So it is a very important one to get right. But I also sit with the fact of all the women that I loved and fell in love with when I was watching the league years ago, yes, they laid the foundation. But sometimes you go into an agreement, you move the ball further, but you're not going to move the ball 60 yards. You want to be good with, you know, 35, 40. Right. Like, so. I think the now is important, but also the big picture. And this feels like a moment that if we don't get to a season, it'll be a loss on all sides.
Alan Hahn
So, Mon, I believe you start something exciting on Friday on msg, Right. Like this. On this trip, correct me if I'm wrong, you will be filling in on TV as the color analyst, right?
Monica McNutt
I will. Tyler and I are your fellow radio companions. We will kick it off in Denver I think he and I are back together in Indiana for my life. Last game of the road trip. But, yeah, I'm excited. It's always fun to jump in the TV chair. It's a better seat than radio, typically, but it's fine.
Alan Hahn
So, yeah, no, you say it. So let's see. This is. Again, this is the beauty of you. You say it so flippantly, like, yeah, this is what we're doing. Like, when Peter asked, what's. What's happening in your life? That's the answer I was expecting that this is.
Monica McNutt
He said, not Nick. He said, not Nick.
Don
That's right.
Guest or Sponsor Voice
Something.
Alan Hahn
You know, this is You. Personally, though, I find this to be awesome. So I'll say it for you. I think this is awesome. I'm looking forward to it. The fact that you and Tyler, who have unbelievable chemistry as we hear it on radio all the time right here on ESPN New York, will get to hear it and see it on TV in a TV broadcast with both of you. And what I'm hoping for is the same exact chemistry that you don't try to change what you guys do because it's tv and think, oh, wait, now we're in church. Now we're not in recess anymore. We have to behave. No, please don't behave. Like you guys should be who you are. And it will be very, very entertaining. Which, by the way, that Friday night game in Denver, that's another one of these. Hey, that's a good game. That's a big game.
Monica McNutt
Yeah, it's a big one. I appreciate that, Han. And, you know, you have been a North Star of sorts since I've arrived in this great town. So I received that information. But I also know there's got to be a little bit of editing because I want to keep my job. And we get a little inside jokey on radio sometimes. But, no, I think the chemistry will shine through. And we will probably have a joke of, like, that's a radio joke. You guys should listen to us on the radio in postseason.
Alan Hahn
Well, we will. I'd rather tell you to dial it back than to ramp it up. That's what I'd rather do.
Monica McNutt
So, Yeah, I got you.
Don
All right, we'll talk to you next Wednesday, hopefully with a review on Wayne's World.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right. We'll pray.
Monica McNutt
All right. That's my goal. I got y'.
Don
All.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. Bye, Monica.
Don
Thanks a lot, Monica. You know, it's interesting, like, I give Alan credit for having the conversation about the NBA regular season, because, you know, you love Basketball, and you're involved in it, and the majority of your work is around the regular season. And Monica, the same thing, like acknowledging there's an issue, but when you're really close to it, maybe you can kind of see past it. But no, there's a lot of people that can't, you know, especially the people that have other things to do. And you know that that's the thing is you just can't take it for granted. Hey, we're the NBA. We're popular. Everybody's going to be able to consume our product. And I think off a reputation they do. There's certain nights, like Friday night, you know, that ESPN's doubleheader, and then there's always a game on Saturday night on abc. And people gravitate towards that, but you keep getting banged over the head to who's not playing. Coaches saying, it's not that big of a deal. Players and even fans just saying, oh, just wait till the postseason. It just. It just chips away at what still is a really cool product and people not, you know, consuming it the way they should because there's just other things to do.
Alan Hahn
Don, it frustrates me to no end because, yes, I am in the world. And sometimes when you're in the world, like you said, you feel like it's the only thing that matters. So you can. You kind of don't see it from the macro view of, you know, the, the. The. The overall sports fan who's got plenty of things on the menu to choose from, whether it's a great college basketball game tonight or a great NHL game tonight or whatever else is going on world that you could tune into. And so if you see two marquee teams going head to head, you're like, well, I want to watch them play. And then you turn it on like, this is. I'll do this. Because, as you know, I will make the choice between the NBA and the NHL On a given night, if I don't have a game, I go home. And that's what I'll say. What's on tonight? And if it's a better NHL game, if the Islanders are on, forget it. They supersede everybody. But I'm saying, in general, if it's a better hockey game than the NBA or a better college game, if St. John's is on, like, I'm like, you know, that's a pretty good game. I'm gonna watch that. Because if I go to pick, because I have league pass, I'll go to any NBA game I want to watch. And I'll say, this looks like a good one. And then I'm like, oh, wait a minute, he's not playing and he's not playing. And then they're coming off about, forget it, I'm out. Because, you know, you're just not getting the best of it on that night.
Don
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
And, and that's what frustrates me is I don't want to watch what looks like a middle of the season game that doesn't have the same amount of juice. I want a game with two teams that don't like each other. They're getting after it like that's what you want. That's part of the entertainment value of watching the regular season when it's two good teams.
Don
And then you have people like J. Will, who our fans respect, saying they shouldn't have the 65 game rule and arguing against that. So it just, it just compounds and compounds and the product, come post season, it's, it's over. Don't worry about it because it's going to be compelling and it's going to be fun. And that's what these television networks buy into. Yes, because that's the other thing too is at the end of the day, ESPN might be upset that they might not get the marquee game in March that they wanted to, but they're also buying in play air in these regular season games because come post season time, that's when the money's made, that's when the ratings are going to pop. That's what they're buying into. And, and then it'll be fun and it'll be great again. But there's still 82 of these suckers. Okay. And there are compelling stories if you pay attention to it. So yeah, it just, I can understand it frustrating the basketball fan to no end. Let's go to Dietz in Colorado. You're on espn.
Peter Rosenberg
New York.
Don
What's up, man?
Dietz
Don Han. Peter, thank you for having me here. So I may have, I may have a solution to what's going on in NBA right now.
Peter Rosenberg
All right.
Dietz
Part one is maybe, I don't know the logistics or how this would affect. Affect local markets, but maybe one week could be like a West week where you have like all the western teams play. And then Thursday, maybe you can have like, maybe a double header that highlights the rookies from the draft. Friday, Saturday you have your marquee matchups, like maybe Denver versus Minnesota or Lakers versus okc. Okay. And then the next week west is off, but that week you have eastern teams play same Idea. Thursday, highlight the rookies. Friday you have your matchups like New York versus Boston and so forth. And in those weeks, you kind of almost highlight like westweek. You can highlight maybe like the history of the Western Conference. Same thing with the East. Highlight the history of the Eastern Conference and then maybe pay attention to more of those.
Monica McNutt
Like this week.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. The one thing that we're missing here is that it should only be able to exist in a world where there's one arena and everybody plays in that one arena. It's very difficult to schedule dates in arenas around the country.
Don
Trying too hard, bro.
Peter Rosenberg
That was.
Alan Hahn
But I was. He really put thought into it. I needed him to know that it's no, but is arena.
Don
The problem is not the presentation.
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Don
The problem is getting the players to care. Getting the players to play. That's the problem.
Alan Hahn
I think the players care. It's the teams that feel I got to hold him back. I got to sit him out. We need more time or we don't want to win. You know, there's. I mean, Don, look at the bottom of the standings in the east and the West. I saw somebody with a stat. It blew my mind. The bottom teams in the, in the, in the, in the lottery right now are on a combined 40 game losing streak.
Don
Yeah,
Alan Hahn
40 game losing streak. Like they aren't even trying to. Like that's why Oklahoma City last night in Chicago, that's why they sat SGA and they sat Hartenstein because they knew it's the first game back to back. This game means more to them because it's at msg. It's their only visit. So they all get a little something extra from the sneaker companies to play in this game. Dirty little secret, but true. That's why stars never miss a game at the Garden because they all know it's from the West. They all know they got to play in this game. And so they sacrificed, although they won it because the Bulls, they know the Bulls aren't trying to win. And so they could. They can get away with it and win.
Don
Yeah, it's crazy.
Alan Hahn
Like the same thing happened with the Celtics. They sat Jalen Brown out against the Bucks and second game back to back. Giannis,
Don
you found it.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh boy.
Alan Hahn
What was what. What happened now what I do. And you never had to say oh boy. And you never had to say never, no. And you never had to say oh, is. Is she Gilgis Alexander gonna play tonight? And you never had to say wow, it's.
Don
It's.
Alan Hahn
What was wrong with the other one?
Peter Rosenberg
No, it's, it's just the. Never had to say. He was just giving context when he played the full club.
Don
It's like, it's like I'm watching Fried Green Tomatoes. Like Fanny Flagg's gonna come into the room.
Alan Hahn
Flag, now
Don
I don't know who he is anymore. No.
Peter Rosenberg
Honestly, every day there's more.
Alan Hahn
This is a dangerous place we're in right now. Yeah. Because you know what's gonna happen is I'm gonna now develop a tick and I won't be able to talk anymore. And then you guys will win.
Peter Rosenberg
And then we get what we want.
Alan Hahn
First of all, you got what you didn't want me to begin with. So this is how you kill me off? This is how you.
Don
This is how you kill me off? All of a sudden he can't talk. No, we don't want that.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh boy.
Don
But I will say this is entertainment through concern.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Both at the same time.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don
That we're trying to entertain an audience but also saying maybe get checked.
Alan Hahn
So if he was that bad. Yeah. Hey, that one. I don't know. What was that?
Don
Just take a look at whatever medication you're taking to see if suddenly one of the side effects.
Alan Hahn
I'm not taking any. Maybe that's the problem. Out five games on the road.
Peter Rosenberg
It's now one or two a week are coming up.
Alan Hahn
Oh my God.
Peter Rosenberg
What are we going to do with this guy?
Don
I just want to get to the bottom of it.
Alan Hahn
I'm concerned, really. It's. I am going to be paralyzed to
Don
a point where I can't talk anymore
Alan Hahn
or, or what will happen is, is because I'm so careful. I am desperate to not go. I have. I had this terrible Long island accent as a kid and I fought through it to a point where I got rid of it. And I'm, I, I, it's going to come back. Because the only way I can tell back to that. And then you'll really be disgusting.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not that bad.
Alan Hahn
Nobody likes that.
Don
Yeah, man. We're gonna get you through this. Don't you worry about it.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not that bad in the first place.
Alan Hahn
Hey, Argo. All right.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
I don't know what I mean.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm gonna watch Argo.
Alan Hahn
No, Don knows what I mean when I say Argo.
Peter Rosenberg
Argo.
Alan Hahn
There's more to Argo.
Don
See?
Peter Rosenberg
Argo.
Don
BLEEP I Honestly, this is high level disgust with you for the Argo.
Peter Rosenberg
Then.
Don
This is way worse than Anthony not seeing office space.
Peter Rosenberg
What about. No. What about boys in the hood, though?
Alan Hahn
What about Boys in the Hood?
Peter Rosenberg
Not have Anthony not having seen Boys in the Hood.
Alan Hahn
I don't think Anthony would understand it. He saw it. Alan wasn't here when we had Anthony
Peter Rosenberg
saw Boys in the Hood. Yeah, because unlike our guests who disrespect us, Anthony at least.
Don
No, he runs and he. And he takes care of business. And you need to take care of business because.
Sponsor Voice
Yeah.
Smalls
How?
Don
Haven't you seen it yet?
Alan Hahn
It's been an hour.
Don
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
You know what I watch the way
Don
I watch Breaking Bad.
Peter Rosenberg
I was going to say, should I pull it down in every commercial break at three minutes at a time?
Don Hahn
Watching someone close go through loss really changes your perspective. You see how quickly grief can turn into financial stress, and it's something no family should have to deal with during an already difficult time. Experiences like that make people think differently about planning ahead and protecting the people they love. Life insurance isn't about expecting the worst. It's about being prepared and knowing your family will be supported if something unexpected happens. That's why life insurance through Ethos is worth considering. They make the process fast and easy. Everything is 100% online, so you can get a quote in seconds, apply in minutes, and even get same day coverage. There's no medical exam, just a few simple health questions. Peter Rosenberg
You just made the list, buddy.
Podcast Announcer
This is the list with Don Hahn and Rosenberg.
Don
All right, it's Wednesday and Wednesday is list time.
Peter Rosenberg
We love a list.
Don
Let's do it. And this one is kind of sad in the sense that and it's hard to believe we lost John Candy 32 years ago today. He passed away on March 4, 1994.
Peter Rosenberg
How old was he?
Don
43, if he was a dad. And did you see the doc?
Peter Rosenberg
I have not watched the doc yet. I heard it's tremendous.
Don
It's very much because he was just. Who didn't like John Camp?
Peter Rosenberg
He was so lovable.
Don
And because he passed away so young, he wasn't in a ton. And he wasn't a feature player in a lot.
Peter Rosenberg
No, he had a lot of bit parts.
Don
But I think when he was in he always left an impression. So as we did with Robert Duvall about a month ago, I figured I'd go with my personal my top five John Candy characters.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, show me roles. I just named the movie. And you'll name the character.
Don
Oh yeah, of course. Because you may not know. I will the character.
Peter Rosenberg
Show me Planes, trains and automobiles.
Don
Thought about it.
Monica McNutt
Wow.
Don
What animated number one.
Peter Rosenberg
What you want about Me, I'm not changing.
Don
I like how like me, my wife likes me, my customers like me because I'm the real article. What you see is what you get. You know, during COVID Alan, I did a list of my top five plot twists, like movie enders, you know, like Sixth Sense and Shutter Island. Planes, Trains Automobiles deserves consideration because I don't think anybody had his wife being gone. And the way they did it with, you know, on the subway with Steve Martin. And he kind of pieces it together and then goes back to the train station and sees that he can't go home because he doesn't have a home to go to. It's a funny movie, but it's also very pointy.
Peter Rosenberg
But Don, remember me and Natalie just watched it.
Don
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
That was my first time ever watching it all the way through. And I was blown away by the ending and had to be number one for that reason.
Don
Yeah. And it's just. And that's why the doc is named the way that it is. I like me because that's one of his most famous lines. So for me, that was easily number one. Alan, do you have a contribution?
Alan Hahn
Of course you do. I mean. I mean, I'm sure, like, you're gonna go Uncle Buck.
Peter Rosenberg
Have to.
Don
Oh, by the way, Del Griffith was his name in playing trains at Automobiles. You guys are doing very well because I've got Uncle Buck, Buck Russell.
Peter Rosenberg
Number two.
Don
Number two.
Peter Rosenberg
Take this quarter, go downtown and have
Don
a rat gnaw that thing off your face.
Guest or Sponsor Voice
It's.
Alan Hahn
It's.
Peter Rosenberg
That line is not nice, but it's effective.
Don
I wanted to play the whole scene. It's like two and a half minutes. But that whole scene where he's got to go to the principal to talk about the girl getting in trouble, it's. It's so great. And I. I think that it. It certainly. I. I got it, too. You could very easily make it number one because that's. That's his movie. He doesn't have a lot of movies where it's his movie. That certainly is his movie. So I've got that at number two. Now it gets a little harder. Three, four, five.
Alan Hahn
I'm curious about a couple of characters that he played that he. Not necessarily was a main character.
Don
Right.
Alan Hahn
Make the list.
Peter Rosenberg
Answer that part first. Some. Did some of the bit characters make the list?
Don
Well, when you say there. I guess.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no. Like. Like less than co. Star.
Alan Hahn
Less than Co star.
Don
Yes. Bit.
Peter Rosenberg
Bit is a little too strong. But before we go there, Alan, do you wanna. Do you have a couple others that he's co star level.
Alan Hahn
Well, I don't think it's. It's not. It doesn't feel co star. It's definitely like a regular in the movie and a.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Alan Hahn
A hilarious character to me with. With some definite lines that I remember.
Don
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Because I'm thinking there's still major movies he starred in too. Sure.
Alan Hahn
Oh, yeah, no, of course. But I'm. I'm just already going to the. Because I'm more curious about what would the. What would a supporting actor movie be? Well, I'm just going to throw it out. I'm going Stripes.
Peter Rosenberg
He loves Stripes.
Don
Stripes.
Alan Hahn
He's so good.
Don
You talk about Ox.
Alan Hahn
Yes,
Don
My friends call me Ox. You might have noticed I've got a slight weight problem.
Alan Hahn
No.
Don
I went to this doctor and he told me I. I swallowed a lot of aggression along with a lot of pizzas. So you guys are on a roll. One, two and three.
Alan Hahn
That character. I love that character. The mud wrestling scene. Come on now.
Peter Rosenberg
Now are. So do you still have movies he started.
Don
I would not say he starred in either of these two. I do have two movies he starred in. His honorable mentions.
Peter Rosenberg
Summer Rental.
Don
Yeah, Summer Rental. Great Outdoors and the Great Outdoors. I. I like them. I just. They weren't as iconic to me as these other. These other roles and at least some around. I think the Great Outdoors. It's interesting. I confused it because they're kind of.
Peter Rosenberg
They're similar.
Don
Very similar.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, now, character. Not a huge character.
Alan Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
But a gigantic film. You thought about Home Alone?
Don
Well, I thought about Home Alone.
Peter Rosenberg
It's just.
Don
It's too.
Peter Rosenberg
Too much of a bit part.
Don
It's. It's too.
Alan Hahn
Bit. Okay.
Don
Very.
Peter Rosenberg
But it's a bit. But. But he's like the only person kind of who does that.
Don
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Like he shows up and has his mom.
Don
We said it just. It's so. It's just at the end of the movie. It's more of. It's really a cameo.
Alan Hahn
When you think cameo.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, it's when. It's when the mom starts. She said, rest her soul, Catherine o'.
Don
Hare.
Peter Rosenberg
It's when she starts the trip home.
Don
Interesting. It's her. But would have, you know, her heavenly birthday today. Wow. So that's kind of interesting. Right? She died. She was born on the day, you know, the anniversary of John Candy's death. I didn't think about that anyway. And JFK also fit into there too. But that's very, very small. But I thought he did. It gets good. That's a serious role.
Alan Hahn
I was going to ask you about the JFK role because it was serious, but yet there was something compelling about the way he played that character. So good.
Don
It was good. But I wanted to honor him in comedy. All right, so these are the two.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. I don't know. Alan, what do you got? So now we know it's not any of his major starring roles, but it's
Alan Hahn
not any of those baseballs can't be space, right?
Peter Rosenberg
I bet it could be Barf.
Don
See, how about this? This is crazy.
Alan Hahn
All right, number four.
Peter Rosenberg
Hi. You're rolling, Alan Barf.
Don
Not in here, mister. This is a Mercedes. Ah, that's my name.
Alan Hahn
Barf.
Smalls
Barf.
Monica McNutt
What are you? I'm a mog.
Don
Half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend. I know you don't appreciate, but I
Peter Rosenberg
guess that clip's already funny.
Alan Hahn
He sells it so well.
Don
And that's more. That's. That. That's poster. Like, he. He. He got credit. That's. That's a big moment. So you guys have one through four. This is an older one. This is one of the older ones. And I will give you a little bit of a hint. It involves the star of the movie we talked extensively about yesterday.
Alan Hahn
Yesterday.
Peter Rosenberg
So it's the Hanks vehicle. Is he in Bachelor Party?
Don
No.
Peter Rosenberg
Come on. I'm trying to remember what he's in with Hanks. That's big.
Don
It's big. It's not big.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a big early. No, it's not big. It's a bit. And it's early Hanks, though.
Don
Early. The same year as Bachelor Party.
Peter Rosenberg
Same year as Bachelor Party.
Don
So it's a 1984 vehicle.
Peter Rosenberg
Whatchamacallit's the other 19 early Hanks movie.
Don
Well, it's not volunteers. I'll give you credit. 5. Freddy in Splash.
Guest or Sponsor Voice
Splash.
Peter Rosenberg
Do you hear me?
Monica McNutt
I love him.
Don
Give me a kiss.
Alan Hahn
Freddy, give your older brother a kiss.
Peter Rosenberg
What's the matter?
Alan Hahn
You too, pink?
Don
Give me your.
Peter Rosenberg
I love this guy's head.
Monica McNutt
Hey, Curly, here's a buck.
Don
Go watch my car.
Peter Rosenberg
Not enough people will appreciate listening to the show that my guest for number five was Fish Woman.
Alan Hahn
Fish woman.
Don
So you couldn't hear.
Peter Rosenberg
I couldn't remember.
Don Hahn
Mermaid.
Alan Hahn
Mermaid.
Don
Yeah. No. And. And the great thing, like, I could have went with the other scene earlier in that scene where he's like, they. They printed my letter. Penthouse printed my letter. I'm in Penthouse Forum. They printed every word.
Alan Hahn
I'm a published.
Peter Rosenberg
That's so good.
Alan Hahn
You know, if you want to talk about, though, a girl, another great Bit part was him as the guard in Vacation. I thought again where they take him on all the rides.
Don
Yeah, he's a hostage outsider.
Alan Hahn
Told you he's hysterical.
Don
Well, he's hysterical pretty much everything.
Alan Hahn
It just. It is. It's not even what he says. It's just how he carries himself, his mannerisms. It's. You almost feel bad for him while laughing at him at the same time.
Don
But there's so many good roles.
Peter Rosenberg
If you wanna. If you want to know what's going on in the chat, I'm told. Oh, anger, hostility, sadness and disappointment.
Guest or Sponsor Voice
Rage.
Peter Rosenberg
Because we did not mention Cool Runnings.
Alan Hahn
Oh my God.
Don
And put them on your list. I. I didn't care for the movie.
Alan Hahn
Oh, no, I'm good.
Peter Rosenberg
I'll take it to the next level. I don't think I've ever seen Cool Runnings in full.
Alan Hahn
Jesus. You can't. Oh, really? That can't be true.
Don
It's not as bad as Argo and I'm not gonna. Kidding. Well, because it's a Disney movie. We're all supposed to watch it. I know that'll dare you.
Alan Hahn
It's not a Disney movie. You're all supposed to watch it. It's just people are really fun. Sports movie. No.
Don
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
No, it's not sports adjacent. It's sports bobsled. That's. That's a sport.
Peter Rosenberg
And it is based on a real team, correct?
Don
Yes. It's a true story.
Peter Rosenberg
Also different.
Alan Hahn
Different era. I was a kid, so I watched it when I was a kid. I don't know how much adults would.
Don
And I think a lot of our audience is probably around your age. Anthony. Listen, you're gonna leave things out, all right? He was an icon. That's why he gets his own list.
Alan Hahn
But put it this way, I didn't think based on the list because you curated it along with me. I never thought. Why aren't you mentioning Cool Runner?
Don
And.
Alan Hahn
And I also wasn't funny in the movie. He's the coach.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, you're serious.
Don
No, it's big.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don
It's not the guy that comes up with this.
Peter Rosenberg
Is his role serious, though?
Alan Hahn
No. Well, yes. He's not. It's not. It's not a comedy.
Peter Rosenberg
He's not being goofball.
Alan Hahn
John can. No, he's trying. He's trying to get the Jamaicans doing a bobsled night.
Don
Right, right.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, he's serious about it, but because he's John Candy, you're watching and kind of just being like, that's John Candy. He's kind of Funny. You know, like, it's just.
Don
I don't think there should be outrage though, Alan, but people get outraged, especially in chat room.
Alan Hahn
I am mad at myself for not mentioning it, but you guys having it come to mind.
Don
No, but you know what? You're good.
Alan Hahn
I was trying too hard.
Don
That's just like the hall of fame. If it didn't come to mind, then maybe it doesn't belong on the list.
Peter Rosenberg
Here's the I will.
Don
You guys want one through five? No, we killed it. No, no.
Peter Rosenberg
We used to be Fish Woman. But listen, I can't feel bad about this.
Don
It's.
Peter Rosenberg
I came out when I was 14, okay? At 14, my focus was not running out, like, to see a movie like Cool Runnings. And then you go to college, you move on with your life.
Alan Hahn
Like, Natalie grew up on TV enough to just stop and walk.
Peter Rosenberg
But, Alan, Alan, when did you have your first child? What year?
Alan Hahn
2001.
Peter Rosenberg
Like. Like by the time your kids, like 6, 7 years old. That's a movie that's already kind of in the lexicon. I just kind of missed it.
Don
Don't feel bad, man.
Peter Rosenberg
But I see why people who grew up on it would think of it as. Oh, my God. That's what they think of when they think of John Candy.
Don
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Don
Well, this is my five. They can come up with theirs. I've got Freddy from Splash, number 5 bar from Spaceballs 4, Buck Russell from Uncle Buck. That's on Buck, Ox from Stripes, Maisie's Uncle Wart, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. It's no Uncle Buck 2 and then Stripes 3. So, yeah, we had some fun with that. That was good.
Alan Hahn
Ox is my favorite of all his characters. My favorite number one. Oh, he's easily number one. I could watch a movie as Ox as the main character.
Don
That and also when they're going through the obstacle course, he kind of just runs off the course. There's so many.
Alan Hahn
You guys have what, like a. Like a six week program? You know, it's perfect.
Don
It's perfect for me. Again, we've talked about this. I love Stripes. And then they go to Germany and it dies. Just shut it off.
Peter Rosenberg
Just.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, when they do that to Back
Don
Jack Boom Jugger, like a lot when they do roll crap.
Peter Rosenberg
What about Canadian Bacon? Consider it.
Don
Yeah, it's, it's, it's. It's okay.
Peter Rosenberg
It's got some of your favorites, though.
Don
Oh, no, Alan. Alda's in that.
Peter Rosenberg
It's got Candy and Alda, but again,
Don
you're leaving a lot of good stuff out. Like it pained me. We. Anthony will tell you, we went. We watched almost the entire movie of great outdoors looking for a really good quote. Now I was also motivated by that too. Like how good were the quotes? We watched the whole scene where he's. What was it? The old 96er where he's got to eat the 96 ounce steak.
Alan Hahn
Oh yeah, he's an icon.
Don
You're gonna leave stuff out. Blues Brothers. He was great in there.
Peter Rosenberg
He really did get a lot more done. Now, speaking of legends who. Who have passed, Lou Holtz is no longer with us.
Don
Oh, really?
Peter Rosenberg
Today at 89 years old? That's right. The first question that comes to my mind is once a jet, would Michael take it? The answer is no.
Don
The answer is absolutely no.
Alan Hahn
89.
Peter Rosenberg
89. Alan, you taking it right now?
Alan Hahn
Yes, I'll take it.
Peter Rosenberg
You're probably.89 is a good number. It's right on the precipice of 90.
Alan Hahn
It's really. It's right on the edge of 90. That's.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a great. You taking Don they offer right now? Absolutely not.
Don
Done.
Peter Rosenberg
Sign the.
Alan Hahn
Sign it up.
Peter Rosenberg
89.
Don
Sign it in blood. We did a lunch with a legend with him. He couldn't have been a nicer. Really? He talked about something with lunch with legend. I think about to this day. And that was like maybe 15 years ago.
Peter Rosenberg
Can you tell us on the other side?
Don
We will.
Smalls
Smalls here.
Don Hahn
Look.
Smalls

I do want to say, before you honor the tease, Alan and I have been very into the Yuka app. Is it Yuka or Yuka App?
Alan Hahn
Right, it's Yuka, Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Alan, do you realize that the chips that Don has as a snack.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So the UK app, if you don't know, it's a thing that will guide you at least a little bit on, like, what's healthy based on, like, fat, calories, saturated fat, sugar, and then additives.
Alan Hahn
It grades food products.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, it grades all food, you know, based on health. Based on health.
Guest or Sponsor Voice
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Some of it being a caloric standpoint, which you don't care about as much, but I do. And then other things being, like, additives. Right.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don
I just. So I'm.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm hungry, and I don't have any food. I couldn't find a parking space, so I didn't have time. So I just reached in Don's bag, and I go, don, can I have some of your chips? He goes, knock yourself out, because he's a great guy. I scanned Don's chips.
Alan Hahn
Oh, no.
Peter Rosenberg
It started beeping like I was gonna die.
Alan Hahn
Warning. It literally beep, beep, beep. Flashing you one of these warnings.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, because I guess chips, I mean, we're talking about, like, what they uts or ruffles.
Don
Yeah, ruffles.
Peter Rosenberg
When you're in that, like, neck of the wood, there's no upside. Right. So it's just a level of poison.
Alan Hahn
You went there.
Peter Rosenberg
It was a four.
Don
Lowest I've seen. I went and got a roast beef sandwich for lunch.
Peter Rosenberg
God blessed.
Don
That worked out today. And I get.
Alan Hahn
I wanted some chips you can eat,
Don
like, now that bag of chips back repug Don. That's. That's a day.
Peter Rosenberg
How long does it last you now?
Don
It's. That's since Monday. And I've had some help. Mike Brown chair is a big help when it comes to chips.
Peter Rosenberg
You're jumping in on the. You know, those chips. He's nodding his head.
Don
All right, sorry.
Peter Rosenberg
To honor the Louisiana Holtz tease.
Don
Yes. So we did a lunch with. With a legend for him. We used to do this. I wouldn't say it was every month, but whenever we would get a significant person, we'd have these legend lunches, and usually at the New York Athletic Club, something like that. And Bonnie Bernstein was the host, and I went. Got to meet him. You're a big fan of this.
Peter Rosenberg
You're a big fan of that era, the show, as I recall.
Don
Huge fan. Because I got so much Reading done. And he said, listen to your body. He goes, that's what I do. If it doesn't matter if it's 3 o' clock in the afternoon, if I'm tired, I go to bed. If I wake up at 3 o' clock in the morning and up I get up. If I'm hungry, I eat. I listen to my body all the time. Your body tells you if you're tired, listen to your body and go to sleep. Now that's tough for us to do. If all of a sudden I want to nap at 5 during the show.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean I do it, you know.
Don
But he said just listen. And I always think about that too. Like if it's 9 o' clock at night, you know, man, I'm tired.
Alan Hahn
I don't know if listen to your body is best advice. I mean, why on listens to his body and he's.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, see that's. But that's the difference because I.
Alan Hahn
His body sometimes tells him no. He's anchoring for one thing or another.
Peter Rosenberg
But I'm gonna push back.
Alan Hahn
I hate to, I hate to end up getting you in trouble.
Peter Rosenberg
I hate to crush you here, but I'm going. He's not listening to his body.
Alan Hahn
What's he listening to?
Peter Rosenberg
His brain or cuz addiction stuff isn't your body you're listening to if you're a food addict. He's listening to I feel blank feeling. I want to eat.
Alan Hahn
His brain part of your body though.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, but, but listening to your body's hunger is different than your. I want to. I see what I'm saying.
Don
Like I said, I think because, because this, this is when I think about it, it's like, like when I get up.
Peter Rosenberg
Go ahead.
Don
Like the other night. I don't know why he can't do it himself.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay, but what's on a. Marco.
Don
Marco is a mover. When he sleeps. Okay, so sometimes he knocks his covers off and then I'll get like 4:30 in the morning. Daddy, Daddy. And I go in there. What's the matter? Can you fix my covers? So I got, we're gonna have, we're
Peter Rosenberg
have to work on this in time.
Alan Hahn
Marco, like Veruca, like from Willy Wonka.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, no, he's not.
Don
He is a spoiled brat. But that's not why he's screaming.
Alan Hahn
And I want it now.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, it's weird because Alan turns southern during the day but Marco turns British at night.
Don
Yeah, it's crazy. So now it's 4:30. I go back to bed in the morning. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Can you fall asleep back at 6.
Don
And his alarm goes off at 6:45. So I got another 2:40. I got another 2 hours, 15 minutes of sleep.
Alan Hahn
Yep.
Don
Couldn't fall back to sleep.
Alan Hahn
Damn.
Don
So I started reading a book, and then I got a little tired and I was able to fall back to sleep. I think that's what he's talking about. Like, don't sit there, Toss and turn and force yourself. Get up, do something. Go read a book. Go do. You know? And then when your body says you're tired and go back to bed, like, you think about it, it's like, if I'm gonna just toss and turn and not fall back to sleep and listen to the alarm go off, that could have been 2 hours and 15 minutes of me doing something productive.
Peter Rosenberg
You could have written a letter to
Don
the editor and then the same thing. Like, oh, well, I go to bed at 11:15. I go to bed. But if your body's telling you you're exhausted at 9 o' clock and you're dozing, go to bed. It sounds simple. But think of all the times that we fight that.
Peter Rosenberg
No, you're absolutely right. Now, let me ask you a Lou Holtz question, though.
Don Hahn
Sure.
Peter Rosenberg
I'll say mine, then. I'll allow you guys to say yours, if it's okay. What player most do you most associate with Lou Holtz?
Don
Tim Brown.
Peter Rosenberg
I said I was going to go first.
Guest or Sponsor Voice
Tim Brown.
Peter Rosenberg
No, mine is Rocket. Ishmael. Based on my age, you know what's
Don
not a bad one? No, that's not bad. I want. I want to do over.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no. Rock Man Dude. You got to be. You got to be. Because there are people out there thinking, but they're wrong.
Alan Hahn
No, that's not strange.
Don
That was a big no, that's.
Peter Rosenberg
He was the man, dude. Right.
Don
If.
Peter Rosenberg
If you're, if you're out there, you
Alan Hahn
know, you know, if you're.
Peter Rosenberg
If you're a younger person out there and you've only heard the name, or just, just look up Rocket. Ishmael.
Don
There's.
Peter Rosenberg
His nickname was Rocket for a reason.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, Al, who do you got?
Don
Who do you.
Peter Rosenberg
What player you most associate with?
Alan Hahn
No, that's where I was gonna go.
Peter Rosenberg
Rocket or Tim.
Alan Hahn
No, Ishmael.
Don
Yeah, they're both not a bad one. But I. Now I just wish I went with Rock.
Alan Hahn
Rocket was a brand name back then, like Sports Illustrated, like he was always referencing him. Yeah.
Don
His brother's name.
Peter Rosenberg
Bob.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, it was Bob. Rocket and Bob wasn't as exciting.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, Rocket and Bob Ishmael he wasn't as popular, but he was good. He's a punter. Heavyset punter.
Alan Hahn
Actually, I think it was Jeremy.
Peter Rosenberg
Jeremy.
Don
Jeremy was.
Peter Rosenberg
Jeremy Ishmael. Heavyset white man who just punted, but
Don
they were broke a minute. You're making fun of me. No.
Peter Rosenberg
Here. If you wanted me to get one of these, I would have said Rick. Myra.
Alan Hahn
Not necessarily A.
Peter Rosenberg
Did Rick Meyer win the Heisman?
Alan Hahn
Are you telling me?
Peter Rosenberg
No, I'm asking.
Alan Hahn
I think he did.
Peter Rosenberg
I think Rick Meyer might have won the Heisman Trophy. So did Rocket, but with good reason.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, he earned it.
Peter Rosenberg
Rocket, Ishmael and Desmond Howard were like a year apart. Same year, Right around the exact same moment.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. College football, man.
Peter Rosenberg
Guys, I didn't always. I know what you're saying, Rosenberg. You hate college football. Not always. There was a time it was dope.
Alan Hahn
It was special cadre.
Don
Ishmael.
Peter Rosenberg
Ah, quadrille.
Don Hahn
Right, right.
Peter Rosenberg
Good call.
Don
He. Yeah, he played Vikings, Packers, Dolphins, Saints, Ravens. He was a good player.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don
So you guys are making fun of me, but I know, like, if you
Alan Hahn
weren't as fast, they called you Quadray.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don
You're really the rare Q not followed by you.
Peter Rosenberg
But it's really interesting because Quadri had the career and Rocket didn't.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, where did Rocket get drafted?
Don
That.
Peter Rosenberg
Now that's a memory I do not have. Where's Dave Rothenberg?
Don
Well, you know. You know why you don't have a memory of it?
Peter Rosenberg
Why?
Don
Because his pro debut was with the Toronto Argonauts. He didn't make it to the NFL till 93. He graduated in 90. Right. Played two years in the CFL and then he went to the Raiders and played there for. From 93 to 95. Then the Panthers, and then he finished his career with the Cowboys.
Peter Rosenberg
So hold on.
Alan Hahn
He got a cool 18 million from the Argos.
Peter Rosenberg
So that's why he went there then. Right.
Alan Hahn
A lot of Argo references.
Peter Rosenberg
So it had to be money.
Alan Hahn
It was a fourth round pick of the Raiders.
Don
Yeah. Fourth round pick, you go, hold on, hold on.
Peter Rosenberg
In the same draft. So you're saying in 90, he was a fourth round draft pick of the Raiders, and he was like, bump that. I'll go be the biggest star in the CFL.
Alan Hahn
18 million to play in Canada because
Don
they're not paying a fourth round pick $18 million.
Peter Rosenberg
So.
Alan Hahn
So wait, wait, wait.
Don
We got a break.
Alan Hahn
No, no, no. I got to do this full circle.
Don
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
By the way, it was the offer. He got the owners, Bruce McNall, Wayne Gretzky and John Candy.
Don
John candy. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Wow.

Caller 'Dietz' from Colorado proposes radical schedule changes to revive NBA regular season interest (e.g., “West Week,” “East Week,” focusing on rookie showcase doubleheaders and marquee matchups with historical themes).

The episode is lively, tongue-in-cheek, deep with New York and sports culture references, and refreshingly candid. There’s an ongoing friendly antagonism among the hosts—especially when discussing old movies and generational tastes. Monica McNutt brings analytical depth and energy, especially when calling out sports industry nonsense. The show fluidly mixes sports journalism, nostalgia, and humor, making it engaging whether you’re a diehard fan or a casual listener.
