Peter Rosenberg
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers with Don McGregor. Peter Rosenberg, I'm Alan Hahn. The Knicks are looking to go up 20 on this series with the Pistons tonight. And you know MSG's got it all covered. MSG networks, you tune into MSG award winning coverage beginning with the pregame show. You'll see me, Bill Peto, you'll see Wally Zerbiak and Of course Monica McNutt who's going to join us here momentarily. That starts at seven and game two. Tip off on MSD Networks, of course with the hall of hall of Fame broadcasting crew of Mike Breen. That's right, he's in the house with us. And Walt, Clyde Frazier, we have you covered for the first round of the series. I want to remind everybody, by the way, that starting next year, the regional sports networks will no longer have the ability to cover the first round of the playoffs. So this is it for us when it comes to getting a chance to cover playoff games and calling playoff games. So I always say about watch with your family, well, this is some one of the last chances to do that. Especially again when you get Breen and Clyde. That's something you don't want to miss. So the aforementioned, of course, Monica McNutt who's going to be part of all of our coverage and you'll hear on the radio coverage tonight on 10:50am Kind enough to join us right now to get into a little more conversation on the Knicks. Monica, thanks for giving us some minutes here. How you doing?
Monica McNutt
No problem.
Peter Rosenberg
Hi guys.
Monica McNutt
Besides, besides the fact that my allergies are whooping my behind today, I'm great.
Peter Rosenberg
It's that kind of.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, it is a problem.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. So, Monica, for three quarters the Pistons thought this whole Mecca thing in the playoffs was like no big deal. And then came the fourth quarter and things got a little different in this building. You've called enough now playoff games here you've been around here long enough. Now, what did that fourth quarter feel like while you were on the air calling the game?
Monica McNutt
You know, early in the game, Han just you could feel playoff energy, right? Like being in the building. And Pat and I looked at each other, we probably said it on air, and we're like, ah, I'm struggling to parse out the whistles from all the noise. Like, it's so noisy in here.
Peter Rosenberg
This.
Monica McNutt
Then the third quarter happened, and it was, like, eerily quiet in that joint. And then the run happens, and I remember basket 98. Pat and I look at each other like it's loud again. And the only thing that got louder than that was one on one when Jalen Brunson hits that three. So, yeah, I mean, you could tell. This is the thing that I've always enjoyed about Nick fans since being a part of the organization is they are really riding with their team, and they're doing it so smartly. It felt like they could all see what I think we all saw in that you were questioning it for a minute whether this young, hungry, very much together and unified Pistons squad was about to throw monkey rich in the plans. And then, you know, I cannot give enough shout outs to Cameron Payne for the way that he was able to come in and have a monster 15 minutes and basically turn the ball game around.
Alan Hahn
Did you see that coming? I mean, did you see the use of him or the use of the bench the way that you saw it in game one going in?
Monica McNutt
I did not see the productivity from the bench, just based on what we've seen all season, Don. But what I will say that the end of the third quarter, there's a moment. I don't remember exactly what happened now, but you can hear Malik Beasley talking to his guys. Like, the rim mics picked it up. And again, these little details that make the moments, particularly when you talk about postseason, I'm like, nobody's saying anything amongst the Knicks, right? Like, nobody is kind of that voice of like, hey, we good? We all right? Let's stay in it. And then enter camera Payne. And we actually asked him about that post game, and of course, he's like, he wants to slay to do most of the talking. But he was the voice that was like, come on, y'all. It's one step at a time. Let's get this crowd back into it. We're at home. Let's go. Let's go. And that's exactly what happened.
Alan Hahn
Talking to Monica McNutt. She's got the call. Coming up, game two and she did a great job. Pat O'Keefe, you've got those GoPros which has really become kind of a staple in the broadcast booth now for these playoff games. And your reactions are just so genuine. Do you even realize that that GoPro's in your face during the.
Monica McNutt
Yes and no. I think last year when the clip went viral, Pat and I both were kind of like, ah, we should have said this, we should have said that. And so I think it's just another omen. And you guys are all sports professionals, journalism professionals. It's just another omen to like be prepared for whatever the moment provides. It does now give me a little bit more reason to be mindful of my cadence because I don't want to get too excited and it not make any sense, but other than that. And I vividly remember Cat taking that wild ass three point shot. So this last one was very much legit.
Don LaGreca
Monica, last week Stephen A said that he feels like this Knicks team has every, every reason to compete with the Celtics and force them to seven games. Obviously that's a long way away. We are one game into this thing. Coming off of a week in which you didn't know what team was going to show up in the playoffs. Have your expectations changed at all and what do you expect for this team?
Monica McNutt
Well, the one the most interesting stat going into yesterday, Peter or Saturday night was I believe and Han, you got in the stat pack too. I might be about to mess up the numbers as I try not to do, but sometimes I do. I think that the starting this team has only been healthy. Healthy. It's like 30 games. Ish. And so there is this idea that like at full strength, what does this team look like? I thought Mitchell Robinson had a terrific game one. I thought Kat made great decisions all around in game one and he kind of got going late. But there is this idea that this is the most we've seen this team at full strength all season long. Right? Like we've not been able to achieve this consistently. I will say that playoff basketball, you have to play the game and you're going to need playmakers down the stretch. You've got Jalen Brunson, who in my opinion should be clutch player of the year. If the defense that you saw from game one in terms of your opportunity to go with your jumbo lineup, the Mitchell Robinson can be the solve that a lot of folks hope that he would be. And this team can put together a complete game, a series worth of complete games because frankly, I felt like three of the four contests this year were done by halftime. Right. I think you got a chance. Like you got a chance. And I also would say say this because even people were talking about the Knicks in game one being like it shouldn't have been that close with the Pistons. Hold that. Because this is playoff basketball and both teams are doing their damnedest to win the ballgame. And so I think having a chance doesn't necessarily mean or. Or being favored in a series, I should say, doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to wipe the floor with these teams. Like, this is going to be a battle well scouted, well prepared. You got all stars on both sides. So I say that to say I do think the Knicks can make it far more interesting than we saw during the regular season. But if I just go on what we've seen this year, they've got a lot to do to close that gap.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, it's funny though, this first round, Monica, if you saw yesterday's games too, like, there really haven't been close games. Like a lot of these games have been. The Memphis Thunder game was impressive.
Alan Hahn
That's ridiculous.
Peter Rosenberg
But really like the Denver Clippers series is going to be competitive. We know that that went to overtime. But a lot of these games have not been. I guess. I guess the Magic gave the Celtics a little something. But it always felt like. Like Don always likes to say bat the bunny. It did feel like the Boston was kind of batting him around a little bit and that was winning time. They put him away. They really haven't been good first round at all.
Monica McNutt
So I think OKC is that good and Memphis is that much of a mess. Right. Houston I kind of fell asleep on. But we've known. And I love Houston, but we've known Houston is a little bit on the anemic side when it comes to offense, so wasn't super shocked there. The Lakers was probably my biggest head scratcher and I don't know that I expect to see that again, at least not on the Lakers side of it all. And then, yeah, Clippers, Nuggets I think is going to be fantastic. Even. Even Cleveland last night, like they. Tajero had a monster game. I put it this way. Your fours and five fourth. Well, no, because the Pacers were four and five. They whipped them too. Your three, six and your other four and five are going to be kind of entertaining.
Peter Rosenberg
You hope so.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
What do you think about if camp you expect Cade Cunningham is going to have to make some adjustments, but the Knicks made it look like they were Trying to take the head of the snake out and make somebody else beat them. And for three quarters, you had Beasley making some shots early you had Hardaway had a big third quarter. Tobias Harris had the big first half, but all three of them went invisible in the fourth quarter. Is that a strategy you think that could work for the Knicks? Is essentially, if we could just keep him frustrated and keep Cunningham from getting into any rhythm. Will live with somebody else beating us because we don't think they can.
Monica McNutt
100%. 100%. And I kept calling that out throughout our broadcast because at halftime, I think he was already one shy of his average on assist. I think he might have seven and a half times, but it's still been held on the double figures as far as scoring goes. And it's like, okay, like, is this volcano bound to erupt at some point, or is this the strategy that you live with because it was like whole Cade Cunningham or let Tobias Harris make the entire Philly fan base wish they had kept him. Right? Like. And if you had to give me my choice, a half from Tobias Harris or a complete game from Kate Cunningham, I'm gonna take the half from Tobias Harris. So, yeah, I 100% think that that's a strategy, but it's funny. And that's one of the questions I actually want to ask Tip today, Han, is because I think our observations, not that they are wrong, but this idea of, like, getting a guy going or letting a guy have a bucket, like, what does that sound like? Or even how does that come across when you ask a coach? Because to me, if the Knicks can find a way to get Cat going earlier, I wonder if we do see a more dominant performance. Although you look at his numbers, he had a terrific game when it mattered most. So from a coaching perspective, is that something that you are looking at or are you trusting your guys, as Chibs always says, to allow the game to dictate what you need to do.
Alan Hahn
Now, Bridges did great defensively in game one, not much offensively. And Allen just mentioned he's the type of player go out and score 30 tonight. You have the pulse on what we can expect from Bridges tonight in game two.
Monica McNutt
I just think he's a guy that has to do whatever is asked of him and let the rest come to him. Right. I keep going back to this legracka early this season, right after the trade. Matter of fact, we were in Detroit. I think it might have been Game 5 of the season, less than 10, for sure. And I asked Jalen Brunson because this is when all everybody was debating the Bridges trade. Whatever, whatever. I'm like, what does it look like for Mikel Bridges to be playing his best basketball? And his answer without missing a beat, y'all, was when he doesn't have to think, right? And so I'm hesitant to say a bunch of do this, do that, prioritize for Mikal Bridges, because I just want him to go out there, play hard, get over screen, knock down shots, and be a master in the mid range. Like, I don't want to make it too complicated for that young man because I think his will starts spinning a little bit, and then you get things that are not necessarily beneficial for him individually or as a team.
Peter Rosenberg
We were talking about Tom Thibodeau earlier in the conversation, Monica, and you've heard all the narratives and everything else, and it's funny. One of the things you talked about was how the Knicks are at full health. And I thought, wait, I thought he wears his teams down. I thought they fall apart at the end of the season, they could be fully healthy. But, you know, I mentioned something that I don't think it's talked about enough, and that is simply his decisions that he made in the second half. The adjustment factor with him liking the small guard, the two guard situation, whether it was Deuce and Payne, whether it was Deuce and Brunson, or when it was Brunson and Payne, which seven minutes together, they were plus 14, they were terrific. It just seemed like he found something he likes. And it sounded like after the game, that could be something we see a lot of in this series. Detroit's not very big, and if they don't have Isaiah Stewart, they're not. They're very small. Like, could that be an X factor for the rest of the series?
Monica McNutt
For sure. And I think as much as, you know, there's both sides of the coin in terms of the reputation of Tibbs. Right. But I think as much as people try to pin him in, I do think that when he says he's looking at the game and allowing it to dictate what he needs to do, there's truth to that for him. We've seen and we've heard him talk effusively about the McBride Brunson lineup. Right. Camera. Payne was having a terrific game. That was undeniable. So that was a terrific adjustment. It fed up the pay for the game. It actually helped to get Josh Hart going as well, when you really look at it. And so I don't. I personally don't think that Tom Thibodeau is so rigid in his approach that he is not evaluating the flow of the game and what's working. So, sure, let's. Let's see some more of that. Let's also, I wonder if, you know, Landy Shaman looks a little bit gunshot to me, or maybe not gunshot, a little deer in the headlights a little bit to me. But let's see if one of these other guys can get it going in terms of the productivity off the bench. Because for Deuce to shoot two threes and not hit anything but the backboard.
Alan Hahn
That'S uncharacteristic when you see a game end the way the game it ended on Saturday. Are you just curious to see if it carries over to the first quarter tonight, or do you just think that you start from scratch? 0, 0. Doesn't matter.
Monica McNutt
You know, that's a great question. Look, record. I think the carryover that I'm more interested in is the Pistons response, if I'm honest, because JB Vicars have said pregame, and I love this quote because, you know, one of the themes of the postseason at large in the NBA has been the inexperience of some of these young teams, which we did see in Game one. But he's like, you get experience as quickly as you learn. And I thought that was just a great way to sum it up in terms of, like, you don't necessarily have a season to learn from this if you're the Pistons and trying to shake it up.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Monica McNutt
But can you not have three lane violations in Game two? Right. Like, can Thompson and Duran avoid picking up three fouls, you know, in the second quarter? Like, what things can that group learn from? What has Cade Cunningham learned from the way that O.J. anunoby was defending him? So I'm more curious in the carryover as far as the urgency and the notion that this young group is chomping at the bit, looking at a chance to make it right. Because as a Hooper, anytime you catch a nail, the only thing you want to do is run it back and make it right. So I'm curious about that side as much, but I do think that the Knicks understand the advantage that they have playing in the Garden, taking care of business at home and wanting to go up too well in the series.
Don LaGreca
Watching the game so closely is, you know, much more than I do. Monica, I'm a fan, you know, you're an expert. I feel like there are these moments where Cat, like, gets more motivated and more mentally focused on doing the other things. Like offensively, he's always dialed in. But from a defensive and rebounding standpoint, Monica, it seems like he has these moments where he lapses and moments where he picks it up. Is that just me, or do you gauge that he's sort of in and out at times?
Monica McNutt
No, I'm totally with you. I thought. Yeah, I thought game one, the four steals were huge. And every time one of those deals led to a run out, I want to say in the next couple of possessions, there will be a loud clapping of a defensive rebound, right? And so I think especially in the course of that run, you can see the momentum. You can feel the momentum. Cat is very much a momentum type of player, right? And he took that wild three and he missed, but he was coming up with the stops defensively to finish. And then he did find his way in terms of scoring, obviously with the big fourth quarter that he had. But, yeah, and I think, like, I don't know, Rosenberg, if I would make that just a Cat thing. I think that is the nature of athletes sometimes. And the elite ones are able to avoid falling prey to whatever Uncle Mo is serving up as far as momentum goes. But particularly guys that are big time scorers, we know that, like, everything changes once the ball starts going in. And you have to really lock in to be energized by something else.
Peter Rosenberg
One thing we've learned in this conversation, guys, is that McNutt loves to go last name.
Don LaGreca
I like it big last name guy.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, Don is so much simpler to say, more efficient. She goes, lagreca. No, but it's like, give me the three silver. Well, Ma, get ready for the game. I'll see you here in the building in a little bit. And we look forward to hearing your call tonight on 1050.
Monica McNutt
Sounds good, y'all. Talk to y'all soon.
Alan Hahn
All right. Hope the allergies are better. They are kicking butt, though, man. Last couple days, even I don't. I'm not an allergy guy, but even I'm suffering a little, little bit.
Peter Rosenberg
Last few days, it's this time of year, right? Oh, the pollen, the wind. It was windy, like crazy, right? Then you get a little bit of that heat, which we haven't had that kind of heat. And we're feeling it like, you open your windows right in the house this weekend? Yeah, you had the windows open, right? At least on Saturday. First time I went upstairs and I was like, damn stuffy. Had to get the AC going. That's a good thing. Let's get some goals. 800 now. 193-776-SEEAN in San Diego has a question. Go ahead, Sean. Hey, guys.
Alan Hahn
Alan, I was, I was curious if you had an opinion on Jalen Brunson's.
Peter Rosenberg
Post game press conference. He seemed like a little bit shorter.
Alan Hahn
And a little less friendly than usual.
Peter Rosenberg
Was he, you know, annoyed by the.
Monica McNutt
Line of questioning or.
Peter Rosenberg
I was a little thrown off by it. He was at the podium, I was in the locker room. So I only got to see it after the fact. I wasn't in the, in the room where the podium is to do all that. But I do know this time of year he doesn't really want to reveal much. He goes into a different kind of mode where he's not going to be as thoughtful with his responses. I thought yesterday after practice he was a little more like that, a little more thoughtful in his responses. I think for him, he's, you know, he's just kind of dialed in. It's a little different personality because I know, you know, we know him. He's. He's one of the, the nicest guys you'll talk to. He's very thoughtful. He understands the media and how it works. So I wouldn't put too much into that or read into it too much other than the fact that he just wanted to handle it and get out of there.
Alan Hahn
The sense I got is that it's celebratory, right from the media standpoint and the way the game ended. And he's all business, like, dude, we got a lot work to do. We just won one game here and we've got bigger fish to fry. So I'm not going to sit here and take bows after doing what we're supposed to do, winning game one at home.
Don LaGreca
That's right.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, but that. Isn't that the way you took it, Peter? Like, I don't know how much you saw, but you know how Brunson is. He's all business and you know how the media can get to. He had a phenomenal game, 21 point.
Peter Rosenberg
Run and over this whole sneaker thing. You saw the thing right where he left, he came back with a different pair of sneakers on. And then, right, of course, he had a 12 point quarter. And when they asked Thibodeau, like, you know, Brunson went in the back. Did he change his sneakers?
Alan Hahn
Oh, here it is. You want to hear it?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
I think he grabbed his cape.
Peter Rosenberg
I love that. Don.
Alan Hahn
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Don LaGreca
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, everyone. Hold on.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
Was that, Was that real?
Peter Rosenberg
That's a real. Yeah, he. He said that.
Don LaGreca
Laughter hold on that response. Was that done?
Alan Hahn
No.
Don LaGreca
Maybe.
Alan Hahn
I'm gonna lay out. I'll lay out. All right.
Peter Rosenberg
I think he grabbed his cape.
Don LaGreca
It sounds like a live studio audience.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, right? That was studio audience. That was studio audience laughter.
Alan Hahn
I'm telling you, if I.
Peter Rosenberg
If I play Seinfeld sound out of it, right? You know that little Seinfeld Diddy that he plays? It's a commercial.
Don LaGreca
You play that.
Alan Hahn
If I played ball, right? If I was an athlete or a coach and I rented out, like, the stress factory in New Brunswick holds like maybe 300 people and just had media go, you would think that I was the greatest comedian in the history of the sport, event of anything. I'm George Carlin.
Don LaGreca
It's so true.
Alan Hahn
It was a funny line, but dear God in heaven, please.
Peter Rosenberg
But delivered by a guy you don't expect it from. He sits there like Peter, you know, because you're always playing the send them off music. He will monotone you into submission. He literally is the teacher. Bueller. Bueller. He does that. And so for him to pause, deliver that and turn his head. If you saw the video of hysterical, he turns his head sideways and just grins. Looking nowhere, just looking off into space with a grin. It's like he knew this is gonna kill him. And. And it was. But you're right, though, with the laughter. It did sound like we were at a nightclub.
Don LaGreca
Wow, that was something.
Alan Hahn
I. I really. That was.
Don LaGreca
Now, can I get it one more time? Can I get it one more time, but with Don, your ad libs on it, please.
Alan Hahn
Okay, sure. I think he grabbed his cape.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you. Never not funny.
Don LaGreca
Thank you.
Peter Rosenberg
We do need to add, like, can we find though, the Seinfeld Diddy that you. That he plays into commercial and put that at the very end of.
Don LaGreca
So you want. You want the same thing, but you want the under it. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Alan Hahn
So you want the credit one, like, where it's the last line. All right, here we go. Ready?
Don LaGreca
All right, here we go. You can make it work, guys. Here you go.
Alan Hahn
I think he grabbed his cape. Come on, get Larry David. Seinfeld, too.
Peter Rosenberg
So good. I hope Larry's listening right now, man, because it's so good. Anyways, we've got. We've got a little NFL binge.
Alan Hahn
That's right.
Peter Rosenberg
Pause on the NBA stuff and get it some football. Guess what? The draft is this week. I know you're fired up. Giants have the third pick, jets have the seventh. Could be a big deal. Can the Giants find their quarterback? What are they saying? There's a lot going on going into this draft on Thursday. So we'll do that with you coming up next. But hey guys, Alan Hahn here to tell you about my friends at Bath Fitter. They're going to remodel a bath in my home. It started today. The work began today. It is like we got excited just to see them rip this thing out. It's amazing. Kevin was there by himself and put in the work and we are fired up. It's going to be done tomorrow. Tomorrow. That's it. So my wife Stephanie, she's running this. She's excited. It's a bath, by the way, by our pool that we put in last year and we realized everybody's using it. So we realized that, you know, the 90s have great music and great movies but not really good for a bathroom. And this time of day we need to update it. The shower was the worst part and so we're converting the tub into a full shower so that guests can use it, the kids have sleepovers and we're not embarrassed anymore. So we had a Bath Fitter consultant took us through the process with their free in home consultation. Stephanie handled all of it. She picked out style and color, all the specifics, accessories to update our bath customized just the way we want it and we're almost done already in a blink. Bath Fitter works fast. Deliver the highest quality work without delay. Bath Fitter is a permanent solution by the way. A one piece seamless wall for a watertight fit and a lifetime guarantee. You can trust the bathfitter team like we are, as they have been in business for 40 years with millions of happy customers. And right now, by the way, you can save up to $500. Alan Hahn
Yeah, this is our Monday thing.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, like this. This makes me feel like. Guys, you can start sniffing foosball again. We're going to talk, of course, a few things related to the draft locally and we'll start off with our very own. Dan Orlofsky was on get up this morning and said that he believed Shador Sanders would want the Giants to pass on him.
Peter Rosenberg
If I were Shador Sanders, I wouldn't want to go 3. I would want to fall to at least 9 if I'm Shador Sanders. And I look at the New York Giants who have given up the most pressure in the last two years to their quarterbacks and the quarterback has taken the most sacks in the last years of the NFL. I don't want to walk into that situation. And that's said with all due respect to Brian Dable.
Monica McNutt
I love him.
Peter Rosenberg
I just don't. I don't want to be a quarterback that is a traditional pocket passing quarterback that needs to be on time and in rhythm and have to go experience in the NFL. What I did the last two years I've talked about. Shador's tape is so difficult to evaluate because the offensive line protection is so bad for such extended periods of time. Why would I want my NFL life to be like my college life if I'm Shadore and I get the chance to sit there and go three or nine? I'm like, dear God, let me go Nine over three.
Alan Hahn
Go. Moronic.
Don LaGreca
Go ahead.
Alan Hahn
Simple. Let's say that's just a simpleton way of looking at things. Honestly, I'm not saying that Orlovsky is, because he's a, he's a bright guy. So he'd rather drop from three to nine. You know, much money that is. And also what the Saints really protected, the quarterback Derek Carr, basically, that got him killed over the last two years. All right, why is every. Why does everybody do this? It's so frustrating. Everybody looks at the vacuum of the absolute. Now he's going to get drafted to a team that's got two veterans on it. He's probably not going to play for half the season if that. And you're worried about what they did in 2024. They're going to be better at protecting the quarterback. And if they're not, jobs are going to be lost. Other people are going to come in to fix the problem. So you're saying his whole career he's going to be running for his life with the Giants. They'll never fix the offensive line problem. The Saints will. Where he's going to draft, he's going to drop from three to nine. No way.
Don LaGreca
And organizationally, Allen, you really think, respectfully, like, you trust the Saints future more at this moment than you would that the, that the Giants won't figure it out? As, as we've said, guys, the Giants do usually figure it out. I, I'm with you, Don. I don't understand that take.
Peter Rosenberg
I understand the take. The take is to protect the player. And that's what Dan's talking about. Dan, Dan's looking at from a player perspective. Right? What he's saying is, you know what he's saying? The Giants are a cesspool. It's the last place you want to go. Their, their, their, their hierarchy is on their way out on their last leg. They haven't gotten the offensive line stuff right. Who's to say they're going to finally get it right now and you're going to get killed in the media? Why would you want to go there? I think he's saying that in the nicest way, but that's not what he's saying because you could tell he hasn't. He has a relationship with Brian D. But that's what he's saying. You're going to go there. They're going to be forced to play you. You're not going to be ready. You're going to get eaten alive.
Don LaGreca
And why would they be forced to play?
Peter Rosenberg
Don't go There.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
Quarterback.
Peter Rosenberg
Because that's how the media. They're not going to win. Media is going to call for it and they're going to be desperate enough to try to save their jobs by playing him.
Alan Hahn
This.
Peter Rosenberg
Show me what this kid can do. You drafted him. Show me what he can do.
Alan Hahn
First of all, this is why it's so painful. They're not drafting Sanders, so I don't even know why. It's a conversation.
Peter Rosenberg
We know they're not. We. Look, look. I guess we should have preface it with they're not taking him three.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
No matter what.
Alan Hahn
And also, Allen, if that's what he says, then say that. Don't say, well, they've got no offensive line. He's gonna run. Just say all the things you just said. Now you're starting to make sense.
Peter Rosenberg
That's what I heard, but what he said. That's what I heard. Well, no, because I want to avoid that cesspool. That's what he was trying to do.
Alan Hahn
Then say it, man. Well, if you got something to say, then say it. Don't, don't. Don't tell me it's the offensive lie. But what he really meant is New York success pool be forced to play an immediate. Well, then say that. If that's your opinion, then that's what you say. Don't say something that is idiotic as the. They can't protect them. Like, they're never going to try to change that. And like the Saints did a great job protecting Carr and he's willing to drop from 3 to 9 and take that kind of financial hit for a guy that thinks he's the best player in the draft. Come on back to me, for God's sakes.
Don LaGreca
But it's irrelevant. I mean, they didn't go out and get Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to then bring in the rookie quarterback.
Peter Rosenberg
Also, I think one of these guys, if they, if. Now here's the other scenario that could happen on, on Thursday night. And it's very likely and we're, we'll probably get some, some shefty here on this in a minute, but I think there's a scenario where Joe Shane has to be more agile than any of these guys in this draft because if, if you see something where the Jackson Dart kid goes to, let's say New Orleans, the quarterback needy teams, somebody is going to take a quarterback before we get to the later stages of the first round. It's not just going to be Cam Ward at one and then nothing. It just doesn't feel like that If Dart goes, you know then, or if Sanders even goes, you know that someone, there's going to be a run and you better be ready to make a trade, a move up, whatever it is, into the first round so you can get that quarterback. Because they have to get a quarterback in this draft. They don't have to do it at three, but they got to get one. And if you're down to the third best guy in this draft, this draft that doesn't have a lot of depth at quarterback, you might say to yourself, now it's not worth taking one because this guy's not any good. So they've really got to be ready to go. That's what you're also watching in this draft, to see how agile that Joe Shane can be in his ability to move up and be ready. Just in case someone takes a guy like Sanders that you wanted to get, hopefully later in the draft to at least put him, and now there's not as much pressure because he's not the third pick in the draft.
Don LaGreca
Let's stay with the Giants for one moment and hear from Brian Dabel on the importance of Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston as leaders on this football team.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I think that's important for the quarterback position.
Alan Hahn
Again, Russell has been doing this for a long time, as is Jameis.
Peter Rosenberg
Both of those guys, I asked them.
Alan Hahn
To get up this morning in front.
Peter Rosenberg
Of the offense and talk a little.
Alan Hahn
Bit about their story, kind of where.
Peter Rosenberg
They came from and who's important to.
Alan Hahn
Them in their life and what's important.
Peter Rosenberg
To them in this game. And they both did a great job.
Alan Hahn
But it's really early in the process, but they understand what leadership is. They've done it in a number of.
Don LaGreca
Places and expect them to do that here.
Peter Rosenberg
Both guys go here. Please let me. Let.
Don LaGreca
Both guys are such good leaders. We needed, we needed two of them. That's how, that's how good they are at this point.
Peter Rosenberg
Never mind both. Can I get video of this? Two guys that you would never put up in front of the room to Talk Seriously. There's two. If you had to pick out of, out of 60 quarterbacks in the, in the, in the NFL right now, a number one in the backup out of 60 of them, would there be two guys that you would say, would you be less. Would want to put in front of a room and speak seriously about your background? Who is, who is less relatable than Russell Wilson?
Alan Hahn
Maybe James Winston?
Peter Rosenberg
You talk about, you talk about the laugh track like that. Give me, give me the seinfeld out on that one. Please put that on social media. What he said to the players. I would love to watch that one. You gotta be kidding. This is your leadership, Don. This is your team. And that's, that's what we're putting up in front of the team and saying, this is our leadership. These two guys are who we want to be our leaders on this team.
Alan Hahn
Maybe by example, if they go out and play well. But Mr. Mr. Unlimited.
Don LaGreca
But listen, let's. I'll push back a little bit on Wilson. He's a Super bowl champion. I think he could be a Hall of Famer. He had a great career. Relatable, it seems. No, most, most teammates don't seem to love Russell Wilson, but he can tell at least a story of success. I'm sorry, what is Jameis Winston's great story of success in the NFL that he's talking about?
Alan Hahn
People?
Peter Rosenberg
He's still in it.
Don LaGreca
He's trying to find it.
Peter Rosenberg
That's it. He's still in the league.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, that's right.
Don LaGreca
Look, you can hang on. You too can hang on until you get a media job. All right, let's go to the jets for a second and hear from Muji. That's right, Mooge. On air on Aaron Rodgers comments about how he was treated.
Peter Rosenberg
I understand the question. I addressed that at the combine, but today I just want to talk about the draft and jets players. Do you have any regrets from that meeting? I understand the question, but I'm just going to talk about the draft and current jets players.
Don LaGreca
All right, Mooge, how about this? Will you exercise 5th year options on Sauce Garrett and Jermaine?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, we have time to make that decision, but I do anticipate exercising those fifth year options on those players.
Don LaGreca
All right. And lastly, Big Moosh, how about just the overall state of the jets roster at this point?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I feel good about where this roster is at right now in April. And I feel good about going into the draft and adding some good players that can help us win. And after the draft, it doesn't stop. We'll be scouring the street list for workouts, the alternative list, leagues, potential trades, and that just never ends. But feel good about where the team's at now and feel good about, you know, adding players that are going to help us in this draft.
Don LaGreca
Well, I always feel good about my team's, my team's roster. When I start hearing my GM talk about exploring alternative leagues. Yes. Oh, listen, it's always, it's always the first thing that makes me go, oh, so we're good is what you're saying.
Alan Hahn
That's right. Because there was. How do you think they found that. That donkey that was able to kick the field goals, you know, that was an alternative league, right, with the Tony Danza movie.
Don LaGreca
Listen, they may. Maybe they'll find the next Rod Smart playing and, you know, the next He Hate me will be playing.
Alan Hahn
They go, good job, Peter.
Peter Rosenberg
He was great.
Don LaGreca
Let's. Let's grab another He Hate me from. You know, that league is going. Going on right now.
Peter Rosenberg
We go back. Can we go back, though, to the. The beginning. The first. First two cuts or the first cut that had two questions in it about Rodgers? How do we feel about Mooch deciding we're not going to put any more oxygen into the Aaron Rodgers drama? Because I feel like that's the right play. And from now on, it's a non factor from the jets perspective. If he wants to keep throwing darts and if he wants to say more things, fine. But if you're the jets, that conversation has to end. It has to be over. You're over it. You're moved on. You got more important business to deal with than answering anything that Aaron Rodgers had to say about you. Agree?
Alan Hahn
Well, thank you. Whatever I'm trying to. Words I'm trying to find. Because whatever it is, I'm just very frustrated with this whole thing that. Then why can't you just say it? You know, why does it sound so rehearsed, like he's read it from a script? Like, you know, hey, we moved on. It's all the way. You say things like, you know, what Aaron said, his thing. We've moved on from Aaron. We're talking about the draft now. Okay, I don't. Aaron's not here anymore.
Peter Rosenberg
You put emotion in it right there. You put a little, Little sass.
Alan Hahn
No, no, but that's what I like. That's what I want.
Peter Rosenberg
Deadpan.
Alan Hahn
I don't want. No, it's not Deadpool. You know, I. I really would rather answer questions about the draft. Just give me something. Like what? Aaron. Aaron who? We've moved on. Aaron's not here. It's not relevant to what we're trying to do here. Again, why just can't you speak with conviction instead of like you're off a script that's sounded like PR was with him before saying, listen, when I asked him about Aaron Rodgers, here's what you should say.
Don LaGreca
We're folk.
Alan Hahn
Say, repeat after me. We're focused on the draft. Right. I appreciate the question. Don't. Don't show disrespect. Don't show disrespect. I appreciate the question.
Peter Rosenberg
Don't show anything. Show no emotion.
Alan Hahn
Don, that wasn't no emotion. That sounded like a nervous Nelly.
Peter Rosenberg
It would know. What he didn't want to do is give an attitude to the media because it's not their fault. I know why you're asking. No, I'm not attitude, but I'm not giving you attitude. I'm just going to let you know we got other things to worry about. I'm not worried about this dude like this. It's just a complete dismissal. I know why you're asking. I'm not trying to be that guy.
Alan Hahn
I don't know, Peter. Maybe I'm not articulate. Well, Peter, isn't it how you say things better like than more than what you say? I. I don't know. It just felt like, what are you hiding? Like, why don't you want to talk about this?
Peter Rosenberg
They don't care.
Alan Hahn
Well, then if, then, then have the tone of you don't care. What's wrong with having the tone of I don't care? Why are we talking about Aaron Rodgers?
Peter Rosenberg
Because you're breathing more oxygen.
Alan Hahn
I believe you. I think you. I think you breathe more into it now. What are you not telling us, Mooch?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't.
Don LaGreca
And by the way. Well, and by the way, Alan, that's their bad now that they want it dead because they're the ones that had to make it a whole thing by hand.
Peter Rosenberg
Make it a thing. He made a thing. Well, how did they make a thing?
Don LaGreca
The way that they handled it. That the immediate big announcement of we've moved on from Aaron Rodgers the entire way it was done, which of course has left them with a situation that none of us believe is particularly desirable. I mean, the big upside that they went for was, was taking their shot on a discount. Justin Fields getting his last chance at the NFL. The whole thing was weird. I mean, they did do this.
Peter Rosenberg
I thought everybody was fired up for Justin Fields. Now I'm.
Don LaGreca
Listen, I made Justin Fields guy. I think he has a high.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, we are. Yeah.
Don LaGreca
I, I think he has a high ceiling. Did. I think he was worth immediately going, we have no interest in Aaron Rodgers. No, I don't think he was worth that. I, I would have, I would have.
Peter Rosenberg
Explored the way this, the way. I can't deny that. But they got somebody instead of being like the Giants. But now you're. You're desperately swinging for somebody because you know nobody wants to come play for you. Now the Rogers thing Like I said, when he revealed what he revealed on McAfee, I didn't like the look. I didn't like how it came out because, you know, don't do it that way. Because now you gave him all the motivation just to. To bring it out there, to tell the world about it, to brag about it, whatever it is you want to say to make the jets look bad. So I didn't like that. I like, have a little class, a little dignity. But now that that's all been revealed and he's the one that put all that story out there, now it's like, okay, let it die now. He means nothing to us at this point. He's not our guy. I didn't coach him. I didn't bring him in. That was somebody else's guy. So whatever you got to ask me about him. We moved on. We got things to do.
Alan Hahn
And I think that could have been the tone. I just didn't like the tone. I gotta tell you, Ben Binge was great because every cut you played irritated me.
Don LaGreca
There you go. That's your NFL binge on this Monday, April 21st.

Want to bring this up quick, guys? And we're going to get into the Yankees and the Rays over the weekend and the Mets and the Phillies coming up this week, which is a pretty big early April series or early season April series is how the narrative there was the collective what was going to happen assumption. Soto was going to get killed over the weekend against the Cardinals by the Met fans. To what actually the reality was in that the Mets fans being very supportive, they didn't turn on him. He had a decent series. He had some big hits. Mets swept the Cardinals. Mets never sweep the Cardinals, never mind sweeping a four game series. Didn't like how they blew the leads yesterday and Friday, but still, the Lindor home run was special. Alan, you were on that, the way the Mets fans serenaded him, really. So there was that whole collective, like almost people telling you what the Mets fans were going to do on Thursday when they returned home and how they were going to react to what the actual reality was. And that was being tremendously supportive. Soto even mentioned it after the game about how cool it was that the reaction that he got, like, here is Soto on the standing ovation that he got.
Peter Rosenberg
This is a great feeling.
Monica McNutt
It's a great feeling, you know, when.
Peter Rosenberg
You have a fan base supporting you, when you're doing bad, when you're doing good, it's just great. I mean, I really appreciate what they did. I feel like they don't know.
Monica McNutt
How meaningful is that.
Peter Rosenberg
I think it means a lot for the players when they do that and it feels really special. Are you surprised by it?
Monica McNutt
100%.
Peter Rosenberg
I was like after my first battle, I was like, why are they getting up and shooting?
Monica McNutt
That's kind of exciting and I really enjoy it.
Alan Hahn
I think that's because these players, whether they pay attention or not, they're told, hey, get ready man, you're going to hear it when you get back home the way you started. And I'm sure there were some of his Yankee buddies too, saying, oh, you're gonna get killed when you get back to Citi Field. And he didn't. So, you know, give the Met fans credit. Everybody assumed that, you know, Michael was on the Air saying, you know, I can't believe Met fans have turned on Soto on social media. Stop with the social media being the narrative of how things actually are. All right? You got 40 plus thousand people in a building and they were supportive.
Peter Rosenberg
That's a great point about that. The social media versus reality thing, I think we're all learning that now that's not the pulse of the fan base. They want to be the pulse of the fan base because they're the loud minority, right? They always say the silent minority. This is the silent majority. This is the loud minority. A lot of times on social media. And that was something to behold. And it does say a lot too, because it is New York. And the reputation of New York is the tough crowd, the discerning crowd, the type that will let you know when they're not happy with you. But a lot of times what we're learning in this, this generation is you'll hear it in the moment when they're frustrated with you. But I think you're seeing a fan base that wants to see it go well. So that's why you're going to see more encouragement. But if he had, you know, if he went 0 for 5 with three strikeouts at Citi Field, I guarantee you by the fifth at bat, he's going to hear about it. But it's always in the moment and you always have a chance to redeem yourself with this crowd because they're so behind this team. They so want to see it win.
Alan Hahn
And I also think this happens in New York quite a bit. Or just when you think you figured them out, they love to surprise you. Like, the narrative is, you know, like Met fans almost being told you're gonna boo this guy to where they're like, oh, no, we're not. We're gonna actually show you how supportive we can be for this guy that is invested in us for the next 15 years. And he's gonna be great. And the fact is, the Mets continue to win, sweeping the four game series against the Cardinals, maintaining a lead in the division. And that's why this week is going to be really interesting with Philly. I'm not going to get crazy, but, you know, it's a nice late April series to kind of figure out where you are. But they're among the best teams in baseball. With Soto not hitting, Alonzo continues to contribute. This pitching staff, you know, slowed down. What was a great offensive team in the Cardinals this weekend? Like I said, they blew the leads on Friday and Sunday, but it really set up for the way that offense that's really been struggling guys to come up and that, that, that Lindor home run was special, man. I, I know they blew the lead and got scary, but you know what, it was a bomb. The way the fans reacted, that was, that was a pretty cool moment on Friday night.
Peter Rosenberg
And that's what makes Citi feel special. Like, I'll be the first to admit, like, Yankee Stadium has a little bit of a stale feeling to it. Even the new building, like, it doesn't have the same roar the old place had in the playoffs. It can get loud. I'm not trying to say that, but there is something about Citi Field that just has this communal feeling. And you know, I had it on and I used, I saw, I reacted to it right away. I know that they. My Girl, by the way, is the most singable song, right? So if you have that as a walk up song, it's so freaking singable that everybody's into it, but for whatever reason, there was a vibe that night and the whole place started singing that song to the point that when the song stopped and he's taking the at bat, they're still singing it. And a great job by sny, by the way. The director, I don't know who the director is, but he's cutting to people in the crowd and couples and the guy singing to his girl. And like, it just seemed such a cool thing. It was cool. And then what do you know, like the next freaking pitch, gone.
Alan Hahn
It was really like, what a.
Peter Rosenberg
It was such a cool moment for April baseball.
Alan Hahn
And as an old school fan like me that, you know, the Cardinals have not been a rival for, for a while. But I go back to when they were in the same division and there's just something about that jersey, especially when they wear those road jerseys. I'm like, God, takes me back to the Tommy Her, Willie McGee, John Tudor Cardinals with, oh my God, Whitey Herzog.
Peter Rosenberg
Little trivia, Donnie little trivia. Last time the Mets swept the Cardinals in a four game series, it had.
Alan Hahn
To be 40 years ago.
Peter Rosenberg
Can you give me a year 86? Yes, a year 86. Yeah.
Alan Hahn
That's a long time ago. Now listen, there's not that many four game series, but that was. That's pretty special stuff.
Peter Rosenberg
