Guest Speaker
Why not?
Peter Rosenberg
The days are winding down to the summer and baseball is supposed to be getting us excited. A lot of people got excited about the football. Both the jets and the Giants won on Saturday. Big 30 to 7 win for the jets over the Packers. Justin Fields looked pretty good, very mobile, effective. And I guess the same could be said about Jackson Dart and the Giants win in Buffalo over the Bills. I've been around long enough though, that I don't put any stock negatively or positively in the preseason. Just don't get anybody hurt because I did 16 seasons of jets football and we did every preseason game. And Peter positive, negative. All of a sudden they kick off for real in the regular season and it's a completely different show. I was driving home from the shore Saturday, so I had to listen to the first half of the Giants game on satellite radio because I wasn't able to get the local station. So I on sat on serious. They only give you the home feed, right? So I got the Bills feed. And so obviously they were skewing things, the Bills, and all they kept talking about was how vanilla the Bills defense was playing. They weren't really playing a lot of guys. They weren't really blitzing, doing a lot of things and how a guy like Wilson was going to be effective because he's a veteran quarterback who could recognize that and take advantage of it. And it just was a reminder to me, like who's playing? Like neighbors didn't play and they're not showing you a lot. You don't want to see anything negative. You'd rather guys play well. But I would tell you and you might not believe me, but I'm doing it long enough that if Jackson Dart looked awful and Justin Fields look awful. I would still say to you, hey, it's the preseason. Doesn't matter. You rather have positive than negative. But at the end of the day, that doesn't mean what you're seeing now is what you're going to see once they kick off for real. So just keep everybody healthy. Okay? But just take it. Take it for what it is.
Guest Speaker
How high were people getting for this?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, I mean, listen, it's social media I get, but you can see there's a new sheriff in town and Glenn isn't going to take all these penalties. And he. And he was in the players faces, I'll give you that. They still committed a ton of penalties, though. You do feel good about the fact that he's not. It doesn't seem to be as passive on the sidelines as Salah was. Remember, Salah was all gas, no break. Remember, he was the guy running up and down the sidelines when he was a defensive coordinator, you know, and he's back to doing it again now. But when he was a head coach, he was just different. So it was nice to see that Glenn looked like he was keeping up the Persona that he showed us.
Guest Speaker
Even though camp open, even though everyone will tell you, oh, that's not what you want these days, and that doesn't play the same way it used to. And we'll see how it actually plays.
Andrew
Just.
Peter Rosenberg
Just win games. So let's see. I want to keep everybody healthy. That's the main thing. Don't get anybody hurt. It's going to be tough enough for these teams to win games. We don't need to see anybody hurt. I was happy that Jackson Dart looked like he had a clue. He was mobile, looked like he had a presence. Same thing, you know, Fields. Listen, he's been in the league for a few years, so I expect him to kind of know what he's doing. But running a new offense, there was. There was a level of confidence that you got from both of these teams.
Guest Speaker
Sure. But it's definitely better than the alternative.
Peter Rosenberg
It's still the preseason. Let's all be cool.
Guest Speaker
It was better than the alternative. Both Dart and Fields look pretty good. But, like, even to a naked, untrained eye like me or you, preseason still looks very slow. It just doesn't look like real games, especially with the quarterback. Like, you can kind of see, like in Dart, you can see everything that he knows he's supposed to be doing. You could see him sort of thinking, oh, but what he did looked pretty solid. Yeah, I thought his motion was Like a little bit slow. I thought all of it looked a little bit slow.
Peter Rosenberg
It all looks slow.
Guest Speaker
But again, that's what pre season is.
Peter Rosenberg
And especially the first one, because remember, it wasn't, you know, camps just open, you know, and, and so you're like two weeks in and all of a sudden you're playing games and you just got there. It must feel like you just started. Now all of a sudden you're going up against competition and then there's only two more of these. That's why it spills into the regular season too. And that's why early September games feel like preseason games. But of course it looks slow, different, but just it is what it is, man. It's never changed in all the years of covering football, man, everybody thinks they figured it out in the preseason. And very few times do you see carryover. For every Victor Cruz exploding on the scene in the preseason and a carryover to the regular season, it's whatever happened to that guy? I was always really excited about that first preseason game.
Guest Speaker
For every Victor Cruz, there's 20 of those.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, there's, there's so many different stories of guys not being great and guys end up being better than you thought. Guys, nobody's playing, nobody's caring. And I'm telling you, it's going to get a lot worse once they go to 18 games. Everybody gets excited. We were talking, I was talking to that, the, we did the teed off challenge, espn while you were away. And I got the chance to do an hour of radio with Dave. He's all pumped for 18 games. Can't wait for 18. I was like, I don't want 18 games. He's like, what do you mean? Because now they're going to cut the preseason down to two games, which means now awful football is going to spill into October and they're going to do load management and you're going to see Patrick Mahomes take a week off because the Chiefs have a two game lead and it's a long season and he's getting ready for the postseason. That's not good. Week 17 already is meaningless for half the teams playing. Right. Nobody's in the games now. You can add another week to it. I don't think, I don't think it's good. And it's going to come at the expense of another preseason game.
Guest Speaker
And then of course, it come at the expense of the players, of their health because if you do have to play more games regularly, everyone worries so much about injuries in the preseason, injuries in the preseason. Are completely freakish. Like, it just happens. Injuries in the, in regular season, it has to happen. That's the way they play. They're playing with their hair on fire. You are just likely to get hurt. So adding another game, if you're a team that's fighting, if you're a bubble team, that means you're fighting for 18 games. Because what at that point, Don, it'll become, you know, the worst team to get in will be, you know, 9 and 9 or 8 and 10 is what you're fighting.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Guest Speaker
Those teams are going to just be killing themselves over a really long time.
Peter Rosenberg
And meanwhile, you're, you know, they'd be flexing for the most part, but there's going to be a big 425 game between the Chiefs and the Bills and both teams have the division wrapped up. And. And Allen and Mahomes aren't going to play.
Guest Speaker
Yep.
Peter Rosenberg
Because, hey, listen, we got two more weeks. We're getting ready. They've already clinched home field. Or it's not.
Guest Speaker
You know what else. By the way, speaking of that, do any of you guys know how many Monday night double headers they have this year? I'm not asking rhetorically. I don't know the number. I just kept looking and was shocked at how many there were. It's over and over again.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a big hit.
Guest Speaker
Well, I don't know why we're doing. I mean, respectfully, to this. It's five double headers. I don't know one person who's clamored and I just wish we had more Monday night double headers. Do you realize that that by its nature kills what makes Monday night special?
Peter Rosenberg
I think this is the last year for them.
Guest Speaker
Oh, they're done. They're moving on.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know the logistics and. Or why or the reason for any of it. But listen, more football.
Guest Speaker
Oh, Jimmy Pitar announced the end of it.
Andrew
That's part of the whole deal with NFL.
Guest Speaker
Got it. Okay, listen, I'm not smart enough to understand the business that we announced a new deal with the NFL Network, and then with that, we're announced that we're getting rid of the doubleheaders, but we do it as we're like, I wish. For example, I know it's too late.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, now with a bang.
Guest Speaker
I know it's too late and the tickets are sold. But don't you wish they could have gone? All right, well, if we're doing it, just switch these games to Sunday. How many? Tell me right now how many people out there who have their Monday night tickets for. You know, you live in Detroit and you have the Monday night doubleheader game. How many people out there would be sad and unable to do it if they changed and said that's a Sunday one o'. Clock.
Peter Rosenberg
They'd all be, it'll be fine, everyone, I'm telling you. At least I know from a Giants and jets perspective that most of the season ticket holders hate primetime games.
Guest Speaker
That's the worst.
Peter Rosenberg
Hate them. Especially Jet fans that have to go from like Suffolk county, have to leave their house at like four in the afternoon right after work, drive three hours to MetLife Stadium and not get home till like two o' clock in the morning after their team probably blew a two touchdown lead in the fourth quarter. It's like they don't want to. Giant fans too. The younger kids love it. When I was younger, I loved the primetime games because I had no responsibilities. I stayed up all night anyway. I'm going to watch Goodfellows till 3 o' clock in the morning. Might as well watch them football.
Guest Speaker
Great point by Donald. You know, he's still that way, by the way.
Peter Rosenberg
But now that I've got, I've got. No, I'm not because I got the twins now, like, I barely get. I barely remember what the weather people look like now. I can't even see the block. Thank God Lee Goldberg works weekends now. I get to see what he looks like now. It's like, can I get to bed before the news?
Guest Speaker
I know. And imagine if Marco starts really falling in love with the NFL and begs you to take him to a Monday nighter. It's going to ruin your week.
Peter Rosenberg
I. One of my earliest memories, I remember the Giants are playing on Monday Night Football. And remember back in the day, kickoff was at nine, all right. And it was like mid-70s.
Guest Speaker
Do the kids even know that, that for like our whole life. Kickoff was nine. Do you remember when kickoff was nine?
Peter Rosenberg
Really? Yep. Nine o'. Clock.
Guest Speaker
That was. No, when we say kickoff at 9, I think that's when you heard the song. It might have been 9 11, 9 14.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, they, they usually got to it pretty quick. But you go to some of the early Monday Night Football animation, it's like it's again, no effort. And then you'd go to a, you know, half in the bag. Howard Cosell kind of set everything up and then they kicked off right away. But yeah, so maybe 9:05, but that's still late. And on a school night. Oh yeah. And remember the Giants were like playing the Cardinals. It Might have been like 1976, 77.
Guest Speaker
There I say, like you dream about.
Peter Rosenberg
No. And I, and my, my father sent me to bed. My bedtime was like at 8:30. I was like, I was like, maybe so 77. I was 9. And I'm listening, I'm in my bed listening to my dad listen to the game downstairs. So I can kind of hear the game. Sure. And then it got interesting and I was like at the top of the stairs listening to the game and my father like went to the bathroom and I guess he saw my shadow or whatever and I got in all kinds of trouble.
Guest Speaker
Yeah. That's a beating of a lifetime.
Peter Rosenberg
And that was because there was no. You didn't care about going to sleep. Sleep. But now you get these older people, like in which I'm now one. It's like, you know, I'd rather the game be at 1 o' clock on Sunday.
Guest Speaker
I'm not even by the way, up till 98. It was 9 o'. Clock. Because that's, that's why for me it still feels new. Because for me it was my childhood. Up until I was like 19 years old. I was like, oh, game doesn't start till 9. And then it started switching like, oh.
Peter Rosenberg
You gotta go Anthony. Anthony's, you know, he was, he was born in 94, so he's 4 years old.
Guest Speaker
Yeah. He doesn't know.
Peter Rosenberg
And the other thing that Anthony, I think he's heard about it but doesn't know. Didn't live in a world where like Monday night was it, they'd throw a Sunday. Sunday night was the goofy. Sunday night was the, oh, we're playing on Sunday night. We'll just throw it on ESPN and they do a good job. But let's not give him any great game Monday night, Paul.
Guest Speaker
Oh, it meant, it meant Sunday night basically meant nothing. You just happened to have a game that was on there.
Peter Rosenberg
Just something like that.
Guest Speaker
Even though, even though, as I got older, obviously Mike Patrick and Theisman became a joy.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't, that's why I won't, I won't disrespected the point of calling it Thursday night. No, but it was somewhere between Thursday and Monday, confirmed. Thursday low end, Monday, high end. And now, now Monday's like, no, we'll play double headers, doesn't matter.
Guest Speaker
But Sunday, Sunday's the one now isn't that funny? It really has fully reversed. And I don't know what's going to happen now with this whole NFL. This whole situation is going to change things. It's Very interesting. Yeah. We're living in fascinating times and most notably because of the NFL schedule.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Guest Speaker
Nothing else interesting is going on but the NFL schedule.
Peter Rosenberg
But, but it is. But to your point about earlier, that at least the first game of the doubleheader in Detroit would be 7 instead of the 8 20. So it ends a little. A little earlier. Now, are you going to stay up for, you know, the Bronco Seahawk, you know, 10:30 kickoff? That's the question.
Guest Speaker
This is what blows my mind. So, so week one, let's get y', all, let's. Let's go through this because I do find it fascinating. Okay, so week one, because they start things out on the Thursday and they have a Friday game this year again, of course, in Sao Paulo, because, you know, this was a tradition we needed, was Brazil and football.
Peter Rosenberg
And it's two years in a row now.
Guest Speaker
And by the way, and by the way, no one there I might be in the 1% of people for maximum love of both football and Brazil.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Guest Speaker
I've got no use for this. All right. I love her anyway.
Peter Rosenberg
You're watching on tv, they'd be playing on Jupiter.
Guest Speaker
I guess you're right because I just don't care about like just Friday night. Think about how weird this is. Friday, September 5th, Patrick Mahomes is playing at 8:00 clock at the Chargers. That's a real game. So that week, the Monday Nighters, Minnesota, Chicago, only one game like it's supposed to be in America. But then week two, Tampa at Houston at seven. That's a game that Dave Rothenberg wouldn't talk to his family for. And that's a game that I'm not even thinking about. So I'm not even. And then at 10, I mean, both of these games, the Chargers at the Raiders. So two, two bad games equal one good one.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes. I think in the NFL's logic, that's.
Guest Speaker
That's because six hours of mediocre. That's the plan.
Peter Rosenberg
But this is the conceit the NFL has because those two games individually would beat like an NBA or NHL playoff game or any of the baseball playoff games I know might be the World Series game.
Guest Speaker
Yeah. And it's crap without any effort. Week three is normal. Week four, the jets are in on the action. Okay, jets at the dolphins at 7:15.
Peter Rosenberg
That's not nothing.
Guest Speaker
And the Bengals and the Broncos at 10:15. I'm good. I mean, it's a fun.
Peter Rosenberg
If I get Cincinnati from last year, then I'm good, right? If you get Cincinnati from two years ago, And Denver from last year. That could be a really good.
Guest Speaker
That could be a good game. I mean, listen, none of us can be this. It keeps going on and on, though. Then week six, Buffalo at Atlanta. Okay. All right. What? I love this place. All right, you do you vote.
Peter Rosenberg
You speak fondly of espn, even off the air.
Guest Speaker
I love this place. Okay. They've treated me great my whole life and I just had a fantastic paternity leave. I adore espn. Wwe. Don, we have the wwe Ples. For God's sake.
Peter Rosenberg
That must have been something.
Guest Speaker
Oh, great news for me. What is this? Week six, Buffalo at Atlanta, 7:15. Chicago at Washington, 815. So some weeks it's a seven and a ten. Some weeks it's. What are we doing? What are we doing?
Peter Rosenberg
They've been doing that for the last few years and I still don't completely grasp it.
Guest Speaker
They switched the.
Peter Rosenberg
I know our company gets both, but doesn't one kind of take away from the other? I know that they don't overlap. They overlap, but there is going to be. They both will finish. The last one will finish uninterrupted and the other one will start under. Interrupted. But still doesn't one feed off the other. Like, if one game is a blowout, then. Then you get nothing.
Guest Speaker
Then you get Week seven, Tampa at Detroit at seven, Houston at Seattle. Oh, that's a good one. Houston. That's the rivalry game. Houston at Seattle at 10:00pm on ESPN.
Peter Rosenberg
No, they. Listen, you do have people like Dave Rothenberg that there's no such thing as too much football. And I. And I'm kind of in that camp too, because I love football as well, but I can distinguish between the good and bad. I'm not just going to believe everything they feed me tastes like filet mignon.
Guest Speaker
You know what it's like the double header on a Monday with football, something you love so much. It's like. It's. I'm trying to find the. I'm trying to find the comp that's appropriate, but not.
Peter Rosenberg
It's like, for example.
Guest Speaker
A threesome for a guy sounds like an absolute dream.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Guest Speaker
Then someone goes, I'm gonna up the ante. Let's make it four.
Peter Rosenberg
Four on one.
Guest Speaker
You might go. All right. Even for me. I don't know what to do here. This is. Two was already so insane. Four, I mean, it sounds like, I guess the thing to show off about it.
Peter Rosenberg
It's great. On paper, it sounds like, amazing.
Guest Speaker
Okay, I get it. Sure.
Peter Rosenberg
But, yeah. There's only so much that can Be seeing it.
Guest Speaker
Sounds interesting. Living it. Seems difficult. It's the same thing with the Monday night doubleheader. Oh, wow, two. But then my Monday comes and I go, I bear, I have a kid now. I barely have time for one.
Peter Rosenberg
I, I, I was trying to formulate an analogy. You went there. That's the analogy. That's the best anything I, Anything I come up with. You would have been, you would have.
Guest Speaker
Been thinking about that.
Peter Rosenberg
I was thinking more along the lines of, like, there you have a meal, and then you have dessert for dinner, but you're not having dessert for lunch. And you're not, certainly not having dessert for breakfast. For every day, the Monday doubleheader feels like dessert for breakfast.
Guest Speaker
Right? It's just, I don't, it's like, okay.
Peter Rosenberg
It'S not awful, but is it really necessary?
Guest Speaker
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Am I overindulging a little too much? I just had pancakes and now.
Guest Speaker
Which, by the way, is dessert.
Peter Rosenberg
And now I'm gonna have a sundae. Makes sun. That makes sense. I, for dinner, we'll go to Rita's. We'll get a nice, like you drink.
Guest Speaker
A flow reader, whatever.
Peter Rosenberg
But I'm not suggesting to Nancy. After, you know, we hit the diner for pancakes, let's, let's get to everybody some pudding. Anybody interested in some pudding?
Guest Speaker
It's, it's a lot.
Peter Rosenberg
That's the second game of the double header Monday. Peter's analogy was throwing another woman into the mix. And then one of the two or three.
Guest Speaker
See, that was the one.
Peter Rosenberg
Mine was more Disney and maybe a little bit more accurate.
Guest Speaker
No. You think? Yeah, Well, I guess you're probably right, because certainly mine does have its perks. Whereas, like, I sincerely don't, because after.
Peter Rosenberg
Every meal, there are people that are gonna give it the old college try. Like, I don't think I can do it, but yeah.
Guest Speaker
No, no. I think everybody.
Peter Rosenberg
Why not five?
Guest Speaker
I think everybody want to give it the old college try. But in the end, you might go, I would have been fine with just.
Peter Rosenberg
You'll walk out with a, with a clearer picture in the world, as usually you feel after that whole thing happens and say maybe there was a few too many.
Guest Speaker
So it's just a lot, and I'm excited. Actually, the best news I've gotten is that we announced it's over. I think we will look back on. Remember the Monday night doubleheader? What a weird thing that was.
Peter Rosenberg
I really thought that it was a cool thing. Week one. Let's celebrate week one, shall we?
Guest Speaker
Yeah, it made sense. Week one. But now they Added Friday. Once you added the third. When did we start kicking off the year? On Thursday. By the way, what year was that? How many years do you think we're into that, Don? 15. You think we're 15 years into the Thursday opener? 12?
Peter Rosenberg
No, I believe we are 20.
Guest Speaker
That many into the Thursday opener?
Andrew
Well, when.
Guest Speaker
Huh?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I do. I do. When was the first not listen.
Guest Speaker
06. You nailed it 19 years into the Thursday. So for our life growing up, it opened on Sunday, one o' clock Sunday.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, and also the NFL would. People would freak out, but it would be the Labor Day weekend.
Guest Speaker
It wasn't.
Peter Rosenberg
Isn't it? The NFL is not afraid of Christmas.
Guest Speaker
Nope.
Peter Rosenberg
They're not afraid of the NBA or baseball World Series. They're not afraid of anything.
Guest Speaker
Nothing.
Peter Rosenberg
Except Labor Day weekend.
Guest Speaker
No. They won't mess that holiday. And by the way, it's so funny. They're so greedy. Think about it. How much would they really take a hit on that weekend?
Peter Rosenberg
They wouldn't.
Guest Speaker
How much would it really impact you that they don't want to do that?
Peter Rosenberg
I think instead we're going to be.
Guest Speaker
Playing till April instead.
Peter Rosenberg
Goodell's on vacation. He just refuses to work. It's probably what it is because they could probably the Labor Day package on Peacock or what's another. Where is your. Your wrestling?
Guest Speaker
What, at Labor Day? Yeah, I'll be in Paris.
Peter Rosenberg
Ooh.
Guest Speaker
Now listen, that's a company that doesn't stop either.
Peter Rosenberg
They keep adding.
Guest Speaker
We go further and further and further.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Guest Speaker
But this one I'm excited about. Like Paris. Paris. I'm very. I'm very here for. There are some trips that I'm like, that seems a bit far. Like Perth is far. That's a far.
Peter Rosenberg
On the other end of the plan.
Guest Speaker
Saudi Arabia is a pretty. That's a pretty big trip. Although it's not that much further than Paris. But to me, the Western Europe ones, I get that WWE in Western Europe makes sense. Now the NFL, the amount of NFL in Europe is to me, insanity. But I asked on my trip in France, I hung out with a German guy at one of the resorts little hotels we were at. And he said he was very. He had spent a little bit of time in America and as a result he loved the Berlin games, like very. Was very into it. Said they're packed and they're a great time and people are actually because. Because of America's sort of prominence around the world, a lot of people have connections to America. So there is more of an interest than you would think because for every person in Barcelona or Germany, they have a family member who lives here, they visited one day.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't doubt the experience for the people that go, but if I'm sitting home and the game's at 9:30, where do I care where it is? What do I care?
Guest Speaker
Right?
Peter Rosenberg
It's 9:30. I think the most attractive thing is it's 9:30. I get a game early instead of having to wait late.
Guest Speaker

Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Guest Speaker
I didn't listen to anything you just said.
Don Hahn
Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. This is the NFL binge.
Guest Speaker
Oh yeah, baby. NFL binge time.
Peter Rosenberg
Binge me.
Guest Speaker
Except very special. I brought along my friend Andrew. Not Andrew.
Andrew
He's great though, by the way, I.
Guest Speaker
Haven'T talked to Andrew in a long time.
Peter Rosenberg
He reached out to me when I got the devil job and then I text him back, how's it going? And we had a little back and forth. That was it. That feels over.
Guest Speaker
Not something.
Peter Rosenberg
Wow.
Andrew
Well, you always thought that anyway.
Guest Speaker
Well, I'll tell you this though. He got at least Anthony. At least Andrew got more than Ty did.
Andrew
True. Got a response.
Guest Speaker
Ty got nothing.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't feel remotely bad about it.
Guest Speaker
Ty got eggs.
Peter Rosenberg
I was. Well, because he won't let it go, which makes me want to double down on. Not to get back at somebody more.
Guest Speaker
No, he read. He read. I had him read me the text because I wanted to judge whether you were a bad guy or whether his text was generic enough that, like, you know, whatever.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it was.
Guest Speaker
No, no, his text was really solid. It was a good. It was good.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it was outstanding. It's a good text. But I told him that it happened the day it was announced, so, you know, I'm being inundated.
Guest Speaker
Oh, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
With tech.
Guest Speaker
Because you left me on red too. It was a ghost town.
Andrew
Lots going on here.
Guest Speaker
Yeah, everyone's getting.
Peter Rosenberg
No, that was on. That was on X.
Guest Speaker
No, no, no. On text two.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Andrew
Oh, no. Is this true?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't think so.
Andrew
This is bad.
Guest Speaker
Don was so on fire that day, he may not even remember. I said.
Peter Rosenberg
And I never responded.
Guest Speaker
I said, oh, boy.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't.
Guest Speaker
Like, I said, oh, here we go. Monday, July. There's a lot in this text message. So many topics. Number one, please take no offense to me leaving the chat, which he didn't respond to either because I was dead to him. Followed up by a week later. I'm over the moon for you, Don. Truly. That's on Monday, right? Eggs.
Andrew
Eggs.
Guest Speaker
Wait a minute.
Andrew
You were on the show?
Guest Speaker
Yes, I did. I was on the show.
Peter Rosenberg
So that. That. That hurt. That.
Guest Speaker
But then. But then on the 8th, I put up a. I sent him a post that I post. I put on Instagram and I wrote, I know you don't do much on ig, but look at all the love on the post I did. Everyone's so happy for.
Andrew
By the way, Eggs again. He still doesn't know how. What his idea sign in is.
Peter Rosenberg
There's a lot of issues with Instagram. And then.
Guest Speaker
And then on Friday, July 18th. So now, two weeks after I reached out, I just got a trying to lawyer for you.
Andrew
It's not going very well.
Guest Speaker
How's your time off? Three weeks in.
Peter Rosenberg
But that was me.
Guest Speaker
That was you, though. But that's.
Peter Rosenberg
That's.
Guest Speaker
That's good. No, you're still a loving friend. You just didn't have any time to reply to people when you got the big news.
Peter Rosenberg
And. But. But the thing with Ty and I said this before. It's the day of. And he did it during the show.
Guest Speaker
That's tough. That was an overwhelming moment.
Peter Rosenberg
But. But he doesn't tell you about him when he got his SNY gig?
Guest Speaker
No, he did.
Peter Rosenberg
How?
Guest Speaker
I was. He did. I think he read your text. He did. He was very tough. So what's the issue?
Andrew
Why is this on that. On that symbiotic relationship?
Guest Speaker
He wanted the one back the way he got you back to you.
Peter Rosenberg
Are you Telling me that this was a topic last week again.
Guest Speaker
Well, what else would it have been a topic?
Peter Rosenberg
When is he going to let it go, Jacob?
Guest Speaker
When do you think he'll let it go? I don't think he's ever going to.
Andrew
Let it go because he brought up.
Guest Speaker
The fact that I didn't have him and my close friends. Oh, no. By the way, I learned this about Ty last week. This should.
Peter Rosenberg
He struggles with his confidence.
Guest Speaker
Well, he's Alan, remember? And remember, Alan is like his closest contact in the. In the building, probably. They work together so much.
Andrew
Oh, yeah.
Guest Speaker
He learned the insecurity thing. The way Allen gets about you and Michael. Ty has the exact same thing. They're the same guy. With who, though?
Peter Rosenberg
With that. With anybody. With Alan.
Guest Speaker
No, everything.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, everything.
Guest Speaker
He just. He wants to be thought of. All right, sorry. We've taken too much. Let's get into the Bing.
Peter Rosenberg
This is the nothing. No, that's not. It's a. It's a Bing.
Guest Speaker
It's a bin.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not the NFL binge.
Andrew
No, no, no. But, but, but you guys mentioned it. And since we didn't want to put too much stock into the preseason, we have other people to do that for us. Here's Mike Tannenbaum on unsportsmanlike, talking about how the Giant should handle dart after his preseason debut.
Mike Tannenbaum
He played very well. And in speaking to the Giants over the last week, they're thrilled with him every day in the building. I would have given him his playbook in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and say, jackson, here you go. Be ready on opening day and never look back. And that was sort of our attitude. Mark Sanchez, when we had him at the Jets. Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, great placeholders, great bridges like Joe Flacco. Put this guy in there, let him go live with the growing pains, and you'll be much happier when we get to December.
Peter Rosenberg
Can we get him on? I'm tired of bashing Mike. Not to his face. Like, he keeps on starting Jackson. Why? And he keeps comparing it to the Sanchez. The jets were probably going to the playoffs the year before Mark Sanchez, before Far Vern injured his shoulder.
Guest Speaker
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
The Giants are one of the worst teams in football. Give the kid a chance. How would you. How does it make any sense? Forget about Dable saving his job. Even if Dable had a contract extension like Brian Cashman has, how does it make sense to have this quarterback play against that schedule right out of the box? Why?
Guest Speaker
I mean, unless your philosophy is, overall, I just believe in playing, playing, playing, playing. And that's it. And now, if that's how he feels, then. But then you need to keep that same energy all the time. You know what I mean? If that's what you. Your philosophy is. I don't believe in people sitting. But, like, I mean, people are getting a little crazy. Michael asked today. Oh, well, he asked Jordan. Will. Will now, will Jackson Dart jump over James Jameis Winston? And I'm like, well, what's the point then, assigning Winston? No, but. But the point is you don't want to throw him in until he's ready.
Andrew
Remember, Shador is a star now.
Guest Speaker
Oh, and Shadow, by the way, These.
Peter Rosenberg
People are all in the same. But LeBron James backed it up, and you know that's true.
Andrew
He did.
Peter Rosenberg
Nobody's going to get upset with anything LeBron James has to say.
Andrew
So Tannenbaum today, tomorrow. What do you want here? Do you want them?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I just. I want to understand the logic. And also Mark Sanchez, the Jets traded up to five to get him. The Giants traded back into the first round, took him 24. What would we do?
Guest Speaker
How?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't. There's two things I take issue with.
Guest Speaker
Go ahead.
Peter Rosenberg
Number one, why. Why would it benefit anybody, the Giants or Jackson Dart to have him start in Washington week one? And why does he keep comparing it to What Sanchez did in 09? It's apples and wrenches. It's apples and human skulls. I wanted to come up with something different. Wrenches is Michael. So my thing will be apples and human skulls.
Guest Speaker
I do. Oh, that's. That's a good one. I do, I do. I sometimes do skyscrapers.
Andrew
Oh, there you go.
Peter Rosenberg
I like skyscrapers.
Andrew
We can hear. We can hear from one of our other friends of the show, Dan Orlofsky, on Pat mcafee. What did you see from Jackson Dart?
Dan Orlovsky
I wouldn't rush Jackson Dart on the field. I think Russell Wilson is the starter and hopefully has some success. I think the best thing for the team and for Jackson Dart is that Brian Dables, his coach for the foreseeable future. And that happens if they're capable of, like, winning and being competitive this year. I thought Dart looked really good as well. The things that you liked were he made some, I guess, different kinds of throws that weren't demanded of him. Some timing routes on the outside to the perimeter, balls across the middle of the field weren't just necessarily crossers. I love that. I thought he was really strong in the pocket. That's one of his calling cards. I thought out of all the kids in the class this year, I thought he was best in the pocket. Just the strength and the climbing of the pocket while remaining a passer. You saw the athleticism. The touchdown pass along Jordan Humphrey is actually an audible at the line of scrimmage. So again, just verification, recognition, aggression.
Andrew
Now I like, I like Dan's thought process here in philosophy because kind of what you said, Don. Peter, if you're throwing Jackson Darden right away into this gauntlet of a schedule and maybe he handles it, I don't know. But if he doesn't, if it's another bad season for the pick that you picked, you probably aren't keeping. Dable and Shane may be gone right now. The guy that you thought was going to be your future, he's going to get a whole nother playbook on the coach next year, most likely two years from now. And that doesn't help either.
Guest Speaker
No.
Peter Rosenberg
And also another thing with the, with the Sanchez comparison, Sanchez, that didn't work. I know they went to back to back championship games. Wasn't because of him.
Guest Speaker
That was the part I was thinking too.
Peter Rosenberg
He was a game manager, he did a good job. I'm not going to take anything away from him. But did he end up having a great career?
Guest Speaker
Peter, he did not. That's the part I was thinking like let's not, let's not hang too much on what happened with Sanchez. It didn't work out long. Well.
Andrew
And we discussed this last segment with something else. For every quarterback that starts right away and has success, you can name 10 to 15 others where it probably was so detrimental to their ability that they never became what you thought they could.
Guest Speaker
Well, I'll say this. Can you think of another quarterback in history whose first two seasons were their best and then after that nothing.
Peter Rosenberg
Hmm.
Andrew
Have to look back at that.
Guest Speaker
Yeah, you'll have to think on that. Take your time.
Andrew
Well, I mentioned him slightly earlier. Let me give you the stat line of Shador Sanders and the Cleveland Browns. 14 of 23 for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
Guest Speaker
Sorry, sorry. Because the 2012 Kaepernick and RG3 would probably fit in that right?
Andrew
Injury didn't help RG3 though.
Guest Speaker
No, no it didn't. So that's something both are extenuating for sure.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, for sure.
Andrew
14 of 23, 138, 2Touchdown Shador. How do you think you did?
Shador Sanders
I wasn't nervous so I went. I didn't really have too much adrenaline. It was just, it was just getting comfortable. It's plenty of games before. Like I was nervous but I Felt like I knew the answers to the test. So it's like when you feel unprepared, then you know when you don't feel like you're ready for the moment. I know I'm ready for the moment.
Peter Rosenberg
Moment.
Shador Sanders
Did I play up to par? No, I don't feel like I did. But overall, the main goal was to win, and that's just. And that's honestly what we did.
Andrew
Mike T. On sportsmanlike, what did you think?
Guest Speaker
Expected?
Mike Tannenbaum
Impressive. Kept the ball in the fairway. You know, it's a little bit like the NCAA tournament. You want to survive in advance. And I thought, you know, that second touchdown he threw, rolling to his left, that's an NFL touchdown.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Mike Tannenbaum
He had a layer of the ball. And look, I've said this for, I don't know, a year now. He's a good player. He's a good quarterback. And he obviously had been working really hard at his craft and took advantage of the opportunity. I don't think there's any question he's a better NFL quarterback prospect than Dylan Gabriel.
Andrew
By the way, I thought that even after they drafted Dylan Gabriel, before they drafted Shador.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Guest Speaker
Listen, these analysts, I love Mike T. Lovely man. They all confuse me because what Jackson Dart did was so great that he would have handed him the playbook the second the draft happened. What Shador did was just keeping the ball in the fairway. You know what I'm saying? Like, what was the Dax and dart was that much more impressive than what Shador did. I will say I'm starting to like Shador's demeanor. He's growing on me.
Andrew
Well, certainly better now that he's separated. Away from the Colorado.
Guest Speaker
Yes, Away from the Colorado. And just seeing, sort of. He just seems to be like, you know what I'm saying, Don? Taking this whole thing in stride and really trying to, like, earn it.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Guest Speaker
I'm sort of feeling. I'm sort of feeling what Shador is putting down right now.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. And I always felt, don't feel bad for him. He's still in the NFL. He still has a chance to show.
Guest Speaker
Everybody what if you do, if you're good, you're going to do it.
Peter Rosenberg
And he'll be given that opportunity. Now, let's see. And a lot of people are going to have egg on their face, including the team that drafted him.
Guest Speaker
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Because they drafted him.
Guest Speaker
Kind of.
Peter Rosenberg
Kind of.
Guest Speaker
They barely drafted him and didn't look happy about it. No, like.
Peter Rosenberg
Like they lost a bet.
Guest Speaker
But he did. He looked pretty good. Shador.
Andrew
Yeah. I mean, Look, I think that what you get out of these preseason games, as you guys mentioned, you don't want it to look bad and it looked good. Now, we'll see what happens in the next one and we'll see what happens from there. But we will see where it goes from there. I saw an interesting article, multiple contributors on ESPN 2025 NFL Future Power Rankings projections for the 32 teams. So this is essentially to take a look at where you think these teams are going to be over the next three seasons.
Guest Speaker
Next three seasons.
Andrew
It was compiled by Ben Solak, Lewis Riddick, Aaron Schatz and Seth Walder. So I ask you guys forgetting the locals for a second because I'm just going to spoil it for you. Not top five. They are not in the top five of who people think have the most healthy futures of the next three seasons. Who do you believe is in the top five? Who is your number one team over the next three seasons in the National Football League?
Guest Speaker
Are they still going to go? Philadelphia, Peter.
Andrew
They are going to go Philadelphia.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't agree.
Andrew
Their overall roster is ranked number one. Their front office is ranked number one. I don't think you. I think people can make the argument that that's fair. Quarterback NFL ranked eight. Coaching ranked tenth.
Peter Rosenberg
So the top five.
Andrew
Yeah, top five. Phillies number one.
Peter Rosenberg
Baltimore.
Andrew
Baltimore's number two. Look at you guys. Baltimore's number two.
Guest Speaker
There's anything even interesting here?
Andrew
Second best overall roster in front office. Quarterback and second overall best roster minus.
Guest Speaker
The quarterback, the Raven.
Peter Rosenberg
There you go.
Andrew
Like I said, I don't think the top five is going to surprise you, but you guys have been doing so good. Do you have number three?
Guest Speaker
How about Detroit?
Andrew
Detroit is not number three. They're in the top five, though. Don, do you have a guess for number three?
Guest Speaker
Buffalo.
Andrew
Buffalo is also in the top five, not number three. Does the Kansas City Chiefs. They believe.
Guest Speaker
Quarterback, my time is wasted.
Andrew
The overall roster.
Peter Rosenberg
So let me just translate. Who are the five best teams in football?
Guest Speaker
Okay, how about this, by the way, Don? And you know, you know what I was hoping for. But of course Washington being in it would have at least been interesting.
Andrew
Okay, where are they, Peter?
Peter Rosenberg
Six.
Guest Speaker
Six.
Peter Rosenberg
No, 30.
Guest Speaker
No.
Andrew
Somewhere in the middle. They're 10th.
Peter Rosenberg
I guess it's not bad.
Andrew
Quarterback. They have them ranked fifth in terms of quarter. Now, granted, you're talking about.
Guest Speaker
Well, but who are the four ahead?
Andrew
Well, we already mentioned a couple of the teams.
Guest Speaker
Exactly. So this whole thing is. Yo, yo. Okay, it's already people that are just currently good. I mean, I Just thought they. You would think. The interesting part would be they're showing you they're predicting some people that aren't already dominant in the league.
Andrew
Well, something that's going to make the New Yorker sad. The giants ranked 31st.
Guest Speaker
Well, again, this is lazy, too. And that's not fair, I don't think.
Andrew
And the jets are ranked 29th.
Peter Rosenberg
Wait a minute.
Guest Speaker
Wait a minute.
Andrew
Yes, dear.
Peter Rosenberg
So this is over the next. How many years?
Andrew
Three.
Guest Speaker
Three years.
Peter Rosenberg
So they obviously don't believe in Justin Fields or Jackson Dark or Jackson Dart because nobody believes that Wilson or Winston's going to be their quarterback in year two or three. It's over the next three years.
Guest Speaker
Step further than that, Don. They don't even believe the. Apparently the hype in the Giants defense at all. Because you can't be 31 if you have a top five defense in the league.
Peter Rosenberg
And why is Kansas City. Because they're never going to get well. So Mahomes is never going to get worse over the next three years.
Guest Speaker
He's only going to get better, apparently. Even though last year I thought he was worse.
Peter Rosenberg
Kelsey's going to continue to change his mind and not retire over the next.
Guest Speaker
Keeps going everything.
Peter Rosenberg
So two of the best players. You make an argument may not be anywhere close. Like Kelsey's going to be gone. Is Mahomes in year three of this conversation going to be what he is now?
Guest Speaker
According to them, yes.
Peter Rosenberg
You know what? I'm tired of these lists. Stop them. Save them for when Alan and Peter are on. Well, I will say this when I'm here. No more. These are all. Yo, yo, let's. People love football. So let's make a list about football. Yay. Who's got the best uniforms?
Guest Speaker
Yay. Top five, top five.
Peter Rosenberg
Kansas City's got to be number one.
Guest Speaker
Why? Because it's the Chiefs.
Andrew
And that's why we do an NFL binge.
Guest Speaker
Damn right. I love what he did. Keep doing it. Even though they're awful. I love it.
Peter Rosenberg
The heaviest offensive line.
Guest Speaker
Top five heaviest. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Which top five running backs with the smallest feet.
Guest Speaker
Oh, that's an interesting one.
Peter Rosenberg
That's.
Guest Speaker
That was. I just thought there was. I really thought. I thought in the top five someone was going to be interesting like, oh, you don't say Pittsburgh.
Peter Rosenberg
Wow.
Guest Speaker
I wouldn't have thought.
Peter Rosenberg
Because you know what that means that you got to think into the future. That's too hard. It hurts their head. So just give the top five teams. Because that's what they did. Right?
Guest Speaker
I guess it was the top five teams.
Peter Rosenberg
I Hate them all. As a man that knows lists, I hate all.
Guest Speaker
You're a man who loves lists. The right list.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Entertaining. And then you know what I challenge with my list? You may disagree. I don't mail it in.
Guest Speaker
Today. No Robin Williams birthday or something? Oh, it's the anniversary.
Peter Rosenberg
Ugh.
Guest Speaker
Isn't it? Must be. Could be 10. My guess is it's 10.
Peter Rosenberg
I would say it's more white is like 20. It's 11, 13, 14.
Andrew
And it is the anniversary of his passing.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes, well, that wasn't the way I wanted to end NFL binge with me screaming about the last thing that Anthony did and then talk about the death of an iconic comedian.
Guest Speaker
Well, Billy, it's because Billy Crystal posted on Instagram and he never posts. I follow him and he never posts. And he posted a picture of him and Robin and said, miss you, my friend. And so I said, oh, this must be something. I'm sorry, I just really turned things down a notch.
Peter Rosenberg

Caller
Donnie Pucks. What's going on, brother?
Peter Rosenberg
How are you, man?
Caller
What's going on, Rosenberg? Radio.
Guest Speaker
What up, man?
Caller
Same old. I know, I know, I know that you love Bobby Aaron, but I'd like to thank you for that gorgeous Jet win that you got us the other day. Must say I. I appreciate you for that. And we know you love Bobby, but on a serious note, though. Yeah. Yeah, man. I appreciate that. On a serious note, though, fellas. Yes, sir. You know, the one thing that I really enjoyed about the win this weekend was that, like, you know, for that one series, it looked really well. And it looked like, you know, he wasn't struggling or he wasn't confused or he wasn't rattled. I just think that honestly, we might need a real wide receiver too, because Carlin and Ty were talking earlier and God forbid somebody gets hurt or Garrett, you know, isn't clicking or Steel starts struggling or something, you know, there's not another wide receiver that could like, you know, you know, collect reps or like, you know, create traffic or, you know, have the other team, you know, trying to, you know, damn strategize for them. So I think that they really should try to focus on getting a wide receiver, too, or getting another receiver in the receiver room. Especially that Lazard got his shoulder injured.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Caller
I just think that that's something that they should upgrade on. And before you gentlemen let me go, Mendoza, please, man, to talk. Talk to the guys in the clubhouse, please, man. We're playing terrible baseball right now. And Don, you're 100, right? Right. It's the pitching. Like, yeah, the hitting isn't happening right now either, but the pitching is killing us little by little. But. Go Mets. Go Jets. Appreciate you guys.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. Thank you so much. The thing with a receiver, everybody believes that the jets are going to be a run oriented team because they do it well. And Fields adds that element of mobility that I think they could really want to take advantage of. But at some point, for the maturity of Justin Fields, they're going to have to try to throw the football. When they start putting eight, nine men in the box, he's going to have to throw to somebody. So we'll see who comes out of this preseason that can emerge as that wide receiver. But clearly, Peter, the way that they're going to put together their offense completely different than every other team in the NFL, at least for now, is going to be. They're going to be more run oriented because I think that's what they believe they can do. Well, they can block it better and they've got a mobile quarterback. That's where they're going to try to get most of their yards. But you're going to have to throw at some point.
Guest Speaker
Exactly. That's how it works.
Peter Rosenberg
Because they got to. They're going to put eight, nine men in the box. Dare you to beat them. And if you're going to mature this kid because remember, this is what the jets are hoping for. They signed Fields to a very economical contract that's only two years long, right? Which basically is one year. Because who knows what they'll end up doing in year two if he ends up having a brutal year this year. And if they're really bad, they'll draft another quarterback again. And they can, based on the contract they gave Fields. But they also want to develop and to see if he can be a franchise quarterback. So you can't completely nurse them along either. You want to see when you finally turn the corner, this guy could be able to throw the ball downfield. He's only 26 years old. So you do what you got to do in year one, but for the sake of his development and to see if he can be the quarterback that you're hoping he can be, you're going to have to throw it downfield. But I really do think the objective early, run the football screens, scramble out of the backfield, move the chains, that kind of deal. But you would hope your defense makes some plays, which they should be able to.
Guest Speaker
But you would hope at this stage in his career that that's something you can build to. I mean, he's capable. That was, yes, it was an economical deal. But I think the hope is there's a real ceiling for him, right? And he has a big arm, right.
Peter Rosenberg
So you got to take advantage of that. You got to find that out. So do what you got to do early. But you're going to have to find out if he could be a big time quarterback. And we'll see. What is it? The over, under five and a half. And many, many people seem to think the jets can be a 78 win team, which obviously takes you out of the conversation of drafting a quarterback high. But ultimately, if Justin Fields is going to be the man, you're going to have to go out there and find out.
Don Hahn

Don, Hahn & Rosenberg Podcast
Episode: Hour 2: NFL Binge
Release Date: August 11, 2025
In this engaging installment of the "Don, Hahn & Rosenberg" podcast, hosts Don Hahn and Peter Rosenberg delve deep into the world of the NFL during the preseason. Joined by guest speakers Andrew and an unnamed participant, the trio navigates through team performances, upcoming scheduling changes, and future projections for the league. The conversation is enriched with insightful analysis, spirited debates, and relatable anecdotes, making it a must-listen for both hardcore fans and casual followers of American football.
The episode kicks off with a discussion on the recent preseason games, highlighting notable performances by the New York Jets and the New York Giants.
Peter Rosenberg reflects on the Jets' dominant 30-7 victory over the Packers and lauds Justin Fields' performance:
"[00:54] ...Justin Fields looked pretty good, very mobile, effective."
Similarly, the Giants' triumph over the Bills is analyzed, with Peter maintaining a cautious optimism about preseason outcomes:
"[02:00] ...I don't put any stock negatively or positively in the preseason... Just keep everybody healthy."
Andrew emphasizes the importance of keeping players injury-free during these games:
"[04:15] ...I was happy that Jackson Dart looked like he had a clue... Fields look pretty good."
The hosts agree that while preseason games provide valuable insights, they should not be overly relied upon to predict regular-season success.
A significant portion of the podcast is dedicated to the upcoming changes in the NFL schedule, particularly the introduction and subsequent phasing out of Monday Night doubleheaders.
Guest Speaker expresses frustration with the frequency of doubleheaders:
"[07:40] ...how many Monday night double headers they have this year?.. It's over and over again."
Peter Rosenberg predicts the end of Monday Night doubleheaders:
"[08:18] ...I think this is the last year for them."
The conversation further explores the logistical challenges and the impact on fans, especially those with family commitments or young children. Peter humorously compares the doubleheader experience to an overwhelming meal:
"[17:57] ...a threesome for a guy sounds like an absolute dream... but four on one sounds like Disney."
The hosts collectively lament the loss of traditional Monday Night Football, reminiscing about its golden days and debating its future in modern broadcasting.
The discussion shifts to ESPN's 2025 NFL Future Power Rankings, compiled by analysts Ben Solak, Lewis Riddick, Aaron Schatz, and Seth Walder.
Andrew reveals that the top five rankings do not include some fan-favorites:
"[36:10] ...they are not in the top five of who people think have the most healthy futures."
Peter Rosenberg contends that teams like Baltimore, Detroit, and Buffalo deserve higher rankings based on their current rosters and potential:
"[36:35] ...Baltimore's number two... Buffalo is also in the top five."
The hosts critique the rankings, suggesting that ESPN's predictions overlook the potential of emerging teams and undervalue franchises with strong defensive line-ups.
A significant focus is placed on the New York Jets' offensive strategy and the Giants' quarterback dilemma.
Peter Rosenberg discusses the Jets' run-oriented approach, facilitated by Justin Fields' mobility:
"[45:40] ...run the football screens, scramble out of the backfield, move the chains..."
Guest Speaker echoes concerns about the Giants' decision to start Jackson Dart, drawing comparisons to past quarterback selections like Mark Sanchez:
"[28:25] ...the Giants are one of the worst teams in football. Give the kid a chance."
The conversation highlights the risks and rewards of starting young quarterbacks early in their careers and the long-term implications for team franchises.
The podcast features expert insights from former NFL player Dan Orlovsky, who shares his perspective on Jackson Dart's potential:
Dan Orlovsky commends Dart's performance and attributes his readiness to succeed:
"[31:04] ...I thought he was best in the pocket. Just the strength and the climbing of the pocket while remaining a passer."
