Don Hahn
This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Peter Rosenberg
That sounds like heaven to me.
Don Hahn
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers.
Peter Rosenberg
403 in the big city. Don and Rosenberg hanging out with you until 6:30. Then it's Mets baseball. Has anybody peeked outside yet? It still looks grim.
Alan Hahn
When I was outside earlier, it did not feel like a day. You wanted to head to the ballpark.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Lots of wind and I see lots of precipitation.
Peter Rosenberg
Precipitation. Now it's the last game of the series and the Pirates are only in here once, but it's still Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh. They've got a common off day tomorrow I believe.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Come on.
Peter Rosenberg
But I didn't think they'd be able to get in yesterday either. And they did. So that's all going on. We got the list coming up at 4:30.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Can we just fast forward to that?
Alan Hahn
No.
Peter Rosenberg
It's so fun, dude. You got to show some patience, man.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I can't.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, Nick's still a major topic of conversation. 1-800-919-3776. So we'll go to Dave in the car. You're on ESPN New York. What's up Dave?
Dave
Thanks for having me on, guys. Dennis Haslam said the former Miami Heat forward who's been, I GUESS he's like 20 plus years in the league, was asked a question today. He said, which team right now, based on all the circumstances absolutely needs to be thinking they got a win right now. And without even any hesitation, he said, the New York Knicks. And I've been on that vibe for a while. Like the moment they put this team together, I was like, I hope they know the windows beginning to close. I think the injuries to Boston, I think their clutch play Indiana, which is a team that, you know, we know the Knicks had much less and still took them seven games. It is not far fetched if the Knicks can beat the Celtics tonight for them to go to the finals. And the other thing I just want to add to this, I don't look at Boston losing Tatum between now and next year as a loss. There's a lot of high, high octane free agents who can fill that slot and run off those big screens and keep Boston a threat in the NBA for the next few years. Let me know your thoughts about that. Have a good day, guys.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Thanks, Dave. The Celtics have no salary room to add anybody. That's not happening. They actually might break up that team. He's a luxury. I completely don't expect anything that dramatic.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't remember was he saying Haslam, who had that?
Unnamed Speaker 1
You don't as Haslam. Yeah, I completely disagree.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't. I don't not look at the Knicks window closing. If anything, how is it?
Unnamed Speaker 1
It's just opened.
Peter Rosenberg
I think first of all, we're in the infancy. Forget last year. Now they made the trade. Now the trade seems to work because the trade was made to match up with Boston and so far, so good. Right. They're up three games to one in the series.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
As you said, the Celtics have no cap space. Cleveland, that might look like it was kind of a flicker. You don't know.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Boy, I'll tell you what, what happened in the playoffs for them really revealed something about that team that if you are in that front office, you almost got to make changes.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. So they're on the verge of making changes.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Celtics are up against a cap wise. We're still waiting for the Sixers process forever. I mean, right now the Knicks have to feel like they're better than the Pacers. All right. Orlando, I think is a team possibly on the come, but they're still behind the Knicks.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Very young. Yeah, very young.
Peter Rosenberg
So. So the Bucks, you know, they're going to lose, like, so. No, I think right now this could be the beginning of something big for the Knicks. I don't know. You want to strike while the iron's hot. Your opportunity to win is something you want to try to take advantage of here because you don't know if you're going to have this path again. But as far as feeling like, oh, we better win now because the window's closing, I think it's swung open. I think it's. This is the infancy of what could be a fun three, four years here.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I mean, you look, consider what you're doing in this run so far along with last year as well, is like you're sending out that message of a team that you don't want to play a playoff series with because they are relentless and they're really, really hard to just. You can't just beat them, be up 12 and think they're going away. You. They are one of those teams you hate to play in a series. That's what the Knicks have become because, you know, they have a guy like Brunson, they have clutch gene in them. They are relentless. They've got a coach who just three or four games into the series, that coach is like, all right, I know what we're doing. Like, I know we can do like that. Like, it may take one or two games, but by the time you get into the series, you can see the adjustments that they make and how they make it work. So I think fans have a hard time taking macro views because it's the team you watch every day. So you see all the flaws because you watch them every day and you focus on flaws. What you don't do is like from the outside look in and go, I don't want to play them. I don't play that team. Because look at them. Like Detroit kind of sent that message to me in the first round. That's a team that, you know, next year they'll, they'll be there and to see if they make some changes to get a little bit better. But they're a team that kind of showed you you don't want to play them in a playoff series because they're nasty and they're physical and you're going to be banged up. So the Knicks have done that to me in the last couple of years. They have kind of sent a message of that team you don't want to play. And if they catch, if they're healthy, they're that kind of team. That does remind me of the late 90s version of the Knicks where they kept having bad. It was a lot of bad luck. The 97 thing with the fight. 98, Ewing gets hurt, 99, they got all the way to the finals, so. But they were just that good, hard playing veteran team that if you weren't right, they were going to run you right over.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I think we're very early in this whole thing. Let's go to John in Miami. You're on espn. New York.
John
Gentlemen, good afternoon, man. So proud of my Knicks, obviously, you know, pulling this out hopefully tonight, I guess. I got a question and this is obviously predicated on the fact if we could pull out the W tonight and we go to the NBA Finals and hopefully win a chip. But I'm seeing like two tales of basketball. I'm seeing regular season play with obviously the last decade, the evolution of the three ball, and then now come playoffs, the refs are swallowing the whistle and letting the physicality reign free, which obviously from a Knicks perspective, we definitely love because I think that's our strong suit. My question is this being a copycat league, do you think that the Knicks are able to be successful through continuing through the playoffs? Do you think that more teams will gravitate away from the three point shot and get more physicality with the advent of having the center be viable again within the NBA? Guys, thank you so much. Let's go Nick's I'll shut up and.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I'll let you guys talk.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks a lot.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I don't think the three balls going anywhere.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Unnamed Speaker 1
But I'll tell you what I'm curious to see if teams start changing the mentality of rest and all those things. Because you know what, in a regular season, having a bench or having like guys you can play eight or nine or ten deep, that's all nice. But what we're learning in the playoffs is that when you're asking your stars to play 40 minutes a night in the postseason, not all of them can handle it because they're not built up for it. I'm curious to see if that, that mentality starts well.
Peter Rosenberg
Like you said in the copycat league, if Knicks go on and win, go to the finals, win a championship, hey, let's do it their way. But it's really up to these players. Do they want to. Like you said, it's a mentality that's existed for a while now and it's happening in all sports. The analytics stuff is not going away. Now sometimes you buck a trend, right? The Texas Rangers, they hired Bruce Bochy, they won a World Series. Yeah, but you still see analytics in baseball. It wasn't like they all just threw it away. It's not. There'll be subtle changes here and there, guys, but I think the three is here to stay. Want to throw this in? Because we have the list coming up at 4:30. But we talked about the leakage in the NFL with it.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah, let's get some leakage.
Alan Hahn
More than leakage.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, what do we got? We want to start with jets or Giants.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I think jets.
Alan Hahn
Because you like sleeping, like napping on Sunday?
Unnamed Speaker 1
Well, no, because I know once we get to Giants, Peter's going to have. He's going to take. He's going to take the pulpit. So I think we go interesting the jets schedule mainly because it is a very curious opener.
Alan Hahn
How much, how much do we know of each team, Don? We know all of it every single week.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah, all the reporting is out already.
Peter Rosenberg
Buys and national television.
Alan Hahn
So crazy.
Peter Rosenberg
Give me Jets. The story with the jets just quick, only two primetime games. They got a Monday. They got a Thursday. They also have a standalone game in London. But I'll give you the schedule opens up September 7th at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Of course, Justin Fields loves this.
Alan Hahn
Now for the record though, we do we really want to do this without.
Peter Rosenberg
Doing win, loss, loss, loss, win, game.
Alan Hahn
I mean, it's kind of hard. Like don't you just Naturally hear the games and go, I want to say right now whether they're going to win.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Or lose, I'm not playing that game today.
Peter Rosenberg
Interesting.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Can we play that game like in July when training games open? You want to do it then and we kind of know. Right?
Alan Hahn
Yeah, we know nothing. It is, it's like it's extra all you know.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Why. Why are they scheduling the Steelers at MetLife against the Jets?
Peter Rosenberg
Because it's Rogers. But because it's a one o' clock game is they're not sure that it's going to be Rogers. So they're playing it safe. But that one o' clock home against the Steelers, then home against the Bills. So the good news is they start at home. Bad news is they're always Steelers and Bills.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Steelers aren't really going to be very good. Now there's a feeling that the Steelers might be really bad this year.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, not if they have Aaron Rodgers.
Alan Hahn
I'll believe it when I say I.
Peter Rosenberg
Think Rodgers is going to join a bad Steeler. He hasn't joined him yet for Metcalf, but you're right. If it ends up, you know, if no Rodgers, different story. All right. Then a back to back road games at Tampa and then at Miami. The Miami game is going to be an ESPN game, but it's going to be the first game of a double header. It's a 7:15 Monday Night Football game, so it'll be the first of a double header. So those are the two games on the road. That's their first nationally televised.
Unnamed Speaker 1
What's the date of that one?
Peter Rosenberg
That is September 29th at Miami, Monday, September 29th. Then they're home against Dallas at Tottenham to take on the Broncos.
Alan Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Home against Carolina and then at Cincinnati. Then they have their buy.
Unnamed Speaker 1
So there's a lot of home games.
Peter Rosenberg
So they got a lot. Well, yeah, because I whole lot. Just based on it, I'm thinking that that Bronco game might technically be a home game.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah. But. Oh wow.
Peter Rosenberg
Because that said, because it doesn't say I just. As Todd. I'm not sure 100% because I'm looking at their home games. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. They've got eight, not counting the Bronco game. So is that their, their ninth home game or are they scheduled to have eight this year? I don't know. I'd have to look it up.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
But so what can, what do you think their record could be? 3 by the by. I mean you're talking about 2, 3 bucks, 8 games.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Dolphins, you said it's the Jets, Right?
Peter Rosenberg
It's the Jets.
Alan Hahn
Let's call it 1 and 7 and move on.
Peter Rosenberg
I.
Unnamed Speaker 1
She's.
Alan Hahn
I'm just being honest.
Peter Rosenberg
And I'm being told that is their ninth home game. So they'll get eight games at MetLife. But that is a technical home game.
Unnamed Speaker 1
At top, you're losing one home.
Peter Rosenberg
I could see them beating the Bucks. Why not? I mean, the Bucks are a playoff team. It's not impossible to beat the Bucks.
Alan Hahn
No, but they could.
Peter Rosenberg
Dolphins kind of up and down.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You don't know what you.
Peter Rosenberg
I think they can get a split on the road with Tampa, Miami. I say they lose the first two.
Unnamed Speaker 1
That's at Miami in September.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Oh, they are. So it's going to be like 9 million degrees on the sideline.
Peter Rosenberg
I say they're 1 in 3, lose to Dallas 1 and 4, beat Denver, Carolina. Is it crazy? 3 and 5, that's not great. 3 and 5, it's not bad.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I'd sign for that.
Alan Hahn
It's on the table.
Peter Rosenberg
Then you come home, then after the buy, home against Cleveland. That's a winnable game.
Alan Hahn
Sure.
Peter Rosenberg
At New England. That's a Thursday. So short turnaround.
Alan Hahn
Oh, what a game.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Oh, wait a minute.
Alan Hahn
The rest of the country's drooling for that.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Wait, are you chasing Patriots on a Thursday?
Peter Rosenberg
That's at New England, where it should be.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Is that at New England?
Peter Rosenberg
It is at New England.
Alan Hahn
Right where it should be.
Unnamed Speaker 1
That's trash.
Alan Hahn
That is a dreadful game.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Like, first of all, that. That sets the jets up poorly.
Alan Hahn
What do you mean?
Unnamed Speaker 1
Short week like that. Got to go on the road.
Alan Hahn
I don't feel bad for the Jets. I feel bad for the viewers.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, now at Baltimore, they will have extra rest, but they're at Baltimore.
Alan Hahn
Mark it up. Derek Henry rushes for 223 and six touchdowns.
Peter Rosenberg
Now back to back home.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Not against Aaron Glenn's defense.
Peter Rosenberg
Back to back home games against the Falcons and the Dolphins. There could be a. Those two. Then you're at Jacksonville, at New Orleans.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Oh, you can get those.
Peter Rosenberg
You can get those.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You can get those.
Peter Rosenberg
Sure. Home against the Patriots at the Bills. Okay, so I look at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Yeah, I could think that I could see 6 or 7. Schedule.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah, I'd sign for 6 or 7.
Alan Hahn
Sure. I think that sounds. I could hear. I heard 8 and then it's the jets. I'll subtract 2. So let's call it 6 and 11.
Unnamed Speaker 1
He's very negative.
Alan Hahn
I'm sorry. I've been doing this now for over 10 years you guys have.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You also both gave the Giants and.
Peter Rosenberg
The jets around eight or nine wins last year. Exactly.
Alan Hahn
And I'm done. I'm done doing it. I just subtract. I didn't say, you know, me and Don did. So I'm Hearing the number 8 and 9 sounds logical.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You're going under regardless. Just because you're like you're going to under promise and hope they over.
Alan Hahn
I'm going to assume, I'm going to assume that a couple of those games that we said, oh, they could win those, that's exactly how the other team see those.
Peter Rosenberg
One person thought the Giants would be bad last year.
Unnamed Speaker 1
That'd be you. All right, speaking of the Giants, why don't we get to them? Because the opening night thing now is going to take a while to get through.
Peter Rosenberg
Giants, they are at Washington Sunday, September 7, opening day, 1 o' clock at D.C. against the Commanders, then at Dallas.
Alan Hahn
That opener is a Sunday at 1.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Alan Hahn
Just a nothing game though. It's a regular Kenny Albert.
Peter Rosenberg
Regular old Kenny Albert.
Alan Hahn
Regular old Sunday. I'll tell you what it won't be. It won't be Last year's Week 2 Giants Commanders game where we were not able to get into the end zone once. I'm confident it won't be that.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm kind of also confident it's not going to be a Chris Myers vehicle.
Alan Hahn
You don't think Chris Myers.
Peter Rosenberg
No, I think it's going to be Kenny Albert.
Alan Hahn
Kenny Albert.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You're not worried?
Peter Rosenberg
Week one, hey, both games are competitive.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Carter making his debut. Ian Burns meet at the quarterback. Me. Wow. That could change.
Peter Rosenberg
Here's my. Here's my bowl.
Alan Hahn
That is a horrible thing.
Peter Rosenberg
Here's my bowl.
Alan Hahn
And they'll meet where the quarterback is supposed to be. But James going to be down.
Peter Rosenberg
I am right now going to tell you the Giants will split against the Commanders.
Alan Hahn
You giving them a split split just because.
Peter Rosenberg
Just cuz. All right. I think the Giants are going to be better this year.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I think defensively they're going to be tough.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. At Washington, at Dallas, then a Sunday night. Mike Tirico, NBC Here we go. MetLife.
Alan Hahn
Oh yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Giants, Chiefs like you dream about.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Oh.
Peter Rosenberg
Or nightmare about.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. Reminiscent of like wasn't it wasn't a week three a couple of years ago then the Chiefs game that Zach Wilson came into.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Chief's not very good early in the season.
Alan Hahn
Remember that? You never know.
Peter Rosenberg
Never know now and then night game in New York City and then home against the Chargers. So I'll ask you this since we're not playing the win, loss, loss, loss, win game at Washington, at Dallas, home against Chiefs, home against the Chargers. Is it, can I get 1 in 3? I think I can get 1 in 3. You could get 2 and 2 potentially.
Alan Hahn
You could get 2 and 2 potentially, but.
Peter Rosenberg
Or you get New Orleans. I mean if you fancy yourself a team that's improved, I think you win at Saints, right?
Unnamed Speaker 1
Oh yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So maybe you're two and three home against Philly. I would think that's a loss done at Denver.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Is that home, home against Philly, Is that the game that Russell Wilson. That's the last time we see him.
Peter Rosenberg
Also by the way, that home game against Philly is a Thursday night vehicle.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Oh yeah, that, that's dreams. Probably the last game we'll see Russell.
Peter Rosenberg
By the way, the Giants three prime time games. So that's their Thursday home against Philly, then at Denver. At Philly. So they get the Eagles done first half of the season at Denver, at Denver.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I take it back. Russell Wilson still playing.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay, you want that game, you probably want that home against San Francisco.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Ooh.
Peter Rosenberg
And then at Chicago. So three road games in four weeks at Denver, at Philly, home against San Francisco, at Chicago.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Where are we now in the month, months?
Peter Rosenberg
We are now November 9th, week 10.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Okay. It gotta feel like when is Jackson dart start to become, you know, the, where the, the rumbling start to begin about dart.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay, well if we're looking at like how many wins at this point? If we think maybe they get two in the first five. I probably only see maybe one. They're probably like a, maybe a three win team by week 10. So they may be three and seven. Then home against Green Bay. I don't know what to think of that. Remember they were messed two years ago and one on Monday night football against love of the pack.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Any given Sunday or Monday.
Peter Rosenberg
Then at Detroit somebody might die. Then at New England, that's a Monday night at New England.
Alan Hahn
You should win that game.
Peter Rosenberg
I think you should win that game.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You think so?
Peter Rosenberg
So that puts us up to like four wins. Then you got the buy late by for the Giants.
Alan Hahn
You gave the, you gave the Giants the Saints, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Yes, I give them one of the first four. Then I give them the Saints. That's two. I give them one of the four against Denver, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Chicago. That's three. New England could be their fourth win. Then the final four coming out of the buy.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Is that at New England?
Peter Rosenberg
I'm sorry, no, home, home.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Home against Washington, home against Minnesota. See Minnesota's strange too, because in a.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Sense don't know what they're going to be.
Peter Rosenberg
You got a rookie quarterback, right? I mean, J.J. mcCarthy hasn't played a regular season.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Now we're in December, you said, right, I'm in.
Peter Rosenberg
You were in December.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Like I said, I think you've got the prodigal son under center. At some point here you have to. If you're at 2 wins, 3 wins.
Peter Rosenberg
Could you see, I know it's a nationally televised game, but it's home against the Patriots.
Unnamed Speaker 1
New England.
Peter Rosenberg
Could you see New England being your first opportunity?
Unnamed Speaker 1
Would you want to do that? I don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know. But you're not going to start him in Detroit?
Unnamed Speaker 1
No. Hell no.
Peter Rosenberg
You're not going to start him in maybe Chicago?
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, you would like to think if you're going to have Jackson dart play, it's going to be a little bit of a soft land.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I don't know if I want to put him up against Mike Vrabel on a Monday night. All right, don't want to do that.
Peter Rosenberg
Then you're at Vegas and at home against Dallas to close out the season. So the Giants have three primetime games. Home against Kansas City, home against Philadelphia for the Thursday night at New England, Monday Night Football. So two of the three are at home. They get three primetime games. Okay, no, no Europe games for the Giants. Now we talk so much about, well, you gotta be this record or that record. I just need to see what it looks like. And I'm not even talking score because I was talking earlier today, like let's say the Giants lose to Washington 2320. You say you were competitive against a team that went to the championship game. But if I had a 20 nothing lead going to the fourth quarter and lose 23 20, I'm not going to be happy. Of course I'm not going to be happy with my coach. I. I'm not going to be happy with my defense that coughed up 23 4th quarter points. I'm not going to like the way that looks like. I need to see what it looks like, guys. It goes beyond score, it goes beyond wins. Now I know the bottom line in this league is what's your record? But is it possible that this Giant team might win five games and it just looks a hell of a lot better than it did last year when they won three and were non competitive in the majority of the games. Won one game at home and I might see more competitive games. A defense that looks like it's good Losing games because maybe Jackson Dart is losing the games late in the season because he's too young to know how to win them or Russell Wilson gets hurt and they've got to play Jameson Jameis Winston who's lost and can't I. I need to see what it looks like, guys. I can't just put oh, you got to win at least seven games that schedule. I don't know if anybody in the situation that they're in is capable of winning seven games with that schedule. That's the toughest schedule in the league, guys.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I think the only thing that would concern you is if defensively you couldn't stay in a game.
Peter Rosenberg
That would be.
Unnamed Speaker 1
It's asking too much of an offense that you know that you really don't have a ton of great weapons. Like if, if your defense is stout but it's just overwhelmed because your offense just can't produce. Like again, it's like what the jets look like for two years ago, right? If your defense is good, but your offense clearly just isn't there, doesn't have enough dudes, then yeah, you could probably say to yourself, I have more building needs to be done. This guy needs to develop whatever it is. But yeah, no, I think if I'm a Giants fan, I'm focusing more on is can the defense get to a level of being competitive so that the offense now has to catch up and you can just make the excuse. It's a very young offense.
Peter Rosenberg
But I've got my. Yeah, but, but I got my quarterback screaming all last year, I need quarterback play. Well, you went and got two veteran quarterbacks and then the quarterback that you traded into the first round for now, I'll give him a pass on dark cause he may not play. And if he does play, might be late in the lost season anyway.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
But all he. Because he. What, what did he say when he had like nobody at quarterback against Indianapolis? Yeah, and it was like, oh, well, you know, give me quarterback play. Look what I can do. Well, I'm giving you Russell Wilson. Granted, he's on the back nine, but he's Russell Wilson. He's way better than Daniel Jones who hurt. Right. He's better than anything you had last year.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I don't know what you're getting from Russ. I have no idea.
Peter Rosenberg
But between the combination of Wilson and Winston.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Well, you know what Winston's going to give you.
Peter Rosenberg
But are they both going to some awful.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
No, but. Is it? No, but the thing both will be God awful.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I'm not saying God awful, but like no Winston. If Winston does play, you know what you're going to get? You're going to get a couple of touchdowns, you're going to get a couple of turnovers. And that's the part that puts pressure on your defense and makes your coach crazy. You know that with Russ, you might just get empty possessions that just don't go anywhere because he scrambles and nobody knows what the hell he's going to do.
Peter Rosenberg
Is he better than Drew Locke?
Unnamed Speaker 1
Of course. I mean, again, the guy has a pedigree.
Peter Rosenberg
Drew Locke threw four touchdown passes against Indianapolis. If I got to get something out of Russell Wilson and you got to.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Get something out of your coach, I think David's game plans have to matter also right now.
Peter Rosenberg
Is it possible that Russell Wilson's garbage? I guess, but. But there's probably. If he doesn't look good, then maybe my coach isn't good enough to make him look good. I don't know.
Alan Hahn
I think I actually feel comfortable knowing what we're going to get from Wilson and Winston. I think they, you know, neither will be awful and you know, neither will.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Be great, but no one will be care. If the team has a losing record and we're in December, everybody will be asking for Jackson Dart.
Peter Rosenberg
I just want a team that can function.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah, start there.
Peter Rosenberg
Hopefully that, that, that, that right there makes it look a lot better. The list.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Can't wait for that.
Peter Rosenberg
Good one. It's coming up next here on Don Hahn and Rosenberg on 880 ESPN New York and the ESPN New York app.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Hey everybody, it's Alan Hahn here to tell you about my friends at Bath Fitters. So I've been telling you about this. They remodeled the bath in my home. My wife Stephanie, so excited about this. We updated a bath by our pool down in the basement. It's converting a tub that was old and decrepit and disgusting and nobody used it to a shower. Just make it this, buddy.
Don Hahn
This is the list with Don Hahn and Rosenberg.
Peter Rosenberg
Time now for the list brought to you by bat365. The Knicks on the verge of doing something nobody thought they could do. And that's beat the Celtics, blah, blah, blah. The thought was, what's a list of the times where New York got the better of the city of Boston? Stuck it to Boston. I mean, really handed them their head. How about that?
Unnamed Speaker 1
I like it.
Peter Rosenberg
You like it?
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Number five.
Alan Hahn
You're just reading them. Go ahead.
Peter Rosenberg
What do you want me to do? You want me to miming them?
Alan Hahn
Sometimes we guess, sometimes you read.
Unnamed Speaker 1
No, I want him to. He should read.
Alan Hahn
You want to read.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
The way we've been doing this is I read them and then we debate it.
Alan Hahn
No, then we say.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Then we say. You forgot about last time.
Alan Hahn
I get last. Literally the last list, I guess. But it's okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Don't get mad at me.
Alan Hahn
I'm not upset.
Unnamed Speaker 1
No, he's. You can tell he got a little. A little triggered.
Alan Hahn
Well, I'm getting a little bit now it's starting to get. Now it's starting to happen. It's getting real, and it's starting to get a little annoying.
Peter Rosenberg
This might be ultimately when he just. He starts to hold on to the Celtics.
Unnamed Speaker 1
He's going heel. He's going to go heel now.
Alan Hahn
Well, no, like, what if they. If they win in dramatic fashion tonight? Maybe that's the day I come in talking trash, gets physical. Tonight starts getting intense.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yep.
Alan Hahn
We'll see. Who knows?
Peter Rosenberg
All right, number five, let's go. We've got to go with the 73 Knicks on their way to a championship in the conference final. Beat the Boston Celtics, won a game seven in Boston, a 68 win. Team Celtic. Right. Team night. 68 wins.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yes. And I believe was that the first time they lost a game seven at home. Yes. In the playoffs. They had never. At the Boston guard, the old Boston Garden. They had never lost on the parquet.
Peter Rosenberg
It just does not happen. So we've got it. Number five. And Walt has told you just how big that game seven was for him.
Unnamed Speaker 1
One of his proudest moments he always talks about that game.
Peter Rosenberg
Now this is all encompassing as far as a season is concerned. How about what the 78 Yankees did to the Red Sox?
Unnamed Speaker 1
Let's go.
Peter Rosenberg
Big 13 game deficit. And then of course the Bucky Dent home run and the playing game.
Unnamed Speaker 1
He's got a middle name, Don.
Peter Rosenberg
I know, but you can't say it on the air unless you want to say Bucky Bleeping Dent. I work blue. So if I'm going to say the word, I'm going to say it.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Say it.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Don't.
Peter Rosenberg
So at number four you've got a dump button.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Relax. Yeah, exactly.
Peter Rosenberg
1970.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I don't know what we got.
Alan Hahn
Do it now.
Peter Rosenberg
Number three.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Let's go.
Peter Rosenberg
I've got the 86 Mets. The Red Sox have the lead in the ninth inning. Two outs, nobody on. Yes, Allen, it's over.
Unnamed Speaker 1
The Mets actually they had bubbly in the clubhouse.
Peter Rosenberg
Michael tells the story that he was in the clubhouse waiting because he was going to actually interview the Red Sox coming off. Interview the Red Sox winning the championship. Coming off the field to win the champion.
Unnamed Speaker 1
That was his assignment.
Peter Rosenberg
That was his assignment at Shea Stadium. All the bubbly. They've got the. The tarp, the seat covering plastic covering the. And Mrs. Yorkie's there. And then all of a sudden the Mets come back and win the game. They literally picked her up and carried her out of the locker room.
Unnamed Speaker 1
That must have been a sad.
Alan Hahn
Not what you are.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Imagine if there was social media back then and you have this video surfaced of this. This.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Elderly owner being carried out.
Peter Rosenberg
Being carried out like the Oscar.
Alan Hahn
All of it would have played so bad.
Peter Rosenberg
It was really bad. And the Mets actually put up on the scoreboard. Congratulations to the Red Sox for winning the World Series. So how about the 86 Mets doing it to Boston at number three gets by Buckner topped only by number two. And that's the Giants ending the Patriots perfect season. They were going to go 18 0. Allen, they're going to be the first team ever to go 18 0. Finally ending the. The Don Shula Dolphins being the only undefeated team member. Shula used to always pop the bubble every time.
Unnamed Speaker 1
They still do.
Peter Rosenberg
Still did. Even though Don is no longer with us.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah. So the helmet catch.
Peter Rosenberg
The helmet catch. Tyree Plexco Burris with a game, inning, touchdown. All that Super Bowl 42, that's number two. Now you might be saying to yourself, what could be number one? What could be number one? And I give Allen credit for. Because I'm always thinking in terms of actual games. But does it get any worse for Boston than just handing. Handing over for cash Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees Basically gave the Yankees a dynasty. Made the Yankees what they are. Because think about it. If the Red Sox hold on to Ruth, whatever happens to Ruth, maybe they keep him a pitcher. Maybe he never develops in anything. Do we have a 27 Yankees? No, we have a Yankee dynasty.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
They still would have Garrick.
Unnamed Speaker 1
And there's no murderer's row is not.
Peter Rosenberg
The same significant piece to their history. Would never happen. And you just wonder how many championships would be lost. How would we look at the Yankees now? Now Boston certainly got up from it, but it took like 80 something years.
Unnamed Speaker 1
All right, only 86 years.
Peter Rosenberg
86 years. Basically the a Mrs. Yorkie time. It took a full Y. You're saying it was a full Y. It was a full Yawkey.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I've been one and a half. Yeah, you never know.
Peter Rosenberg
But now. So that. That to me, even though it's not a game, how could it not be for. No. No Nanette, which a play that I think closed very quickly ends up being number one. So we got the 73 Knicks over the Celtics at number five. The 78 Yankees number four.
Alan Hahn
Beautiful list.
Peter Rosenberg
That's three. Super Bowl 42 is number two. And selling of Ruth to the Yankees and of course beginning the curse of the Bambino, which lasted a long, long time being number one. Now before we get to the calls and just a reaction off the list, if the Knicks win tonight or at any point win this series, does it make this top five?
Unnamed Speaker 1
No, Peter.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Alan Hahn
But it's damn close.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You need a ring.
Peter Rosenberg
I think the only thing.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You need a ring.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, let's say like Boone.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Boone's home run in 033.
Peter Rosenberg
That was.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You talk about ripping the heart out of a team again. That didn't last long enough because a year later, obviously they had their, you know, their. Their revenge might have contributed to it. But boons03 home run is like, as you know, as close to Bucky Dent. Right. But they didn't win the World Series that year. They lost to the Marlins.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right. And six.
Unnamed Speaker 1
So again that. That's a great moment, but it doesn't. It can't be put on this list. So I think you got to have the title.
Peter Rosenberg
If the Giants won the super bowl.
Unnamed Speaker 1
The, you know, all the things we're talking about. Bucky did. They won the. They won the World Series that year. The Mets won the World Series. Like there's, you know, the Knicks went on to win the 73 championship. I think that's gotta be a prerequisite for making this list or knocking anybody off.
Peter Rosenberg
So if the, if, if, if the Knicks go on to win the championship this year, would you consider putting it on the list? Or that's, or is it too early in the playoffs? Because we are only talking round two. The reason I say that.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah, but you think about it. They weren't so underdog. Not supposed to pass, not supposed to be. Couldn't beat them all all regular season. They owned you. They are. They beat you by 16 points a game. But what are you knocking off that's a hefty top five.
Peter Rosenberg
Top five. Think of what didn't make it all right. The Giants other championship against in 2011 against the Patriots. Didn't make him catch all right. And also didn't make the list because I thought it was too early. But that Islander win against the Bruins in round two of 1980 was hugely significant. They were a very high seed. Now they had to go on and beat the Sabres and then the Flyers. That was a 1 through 16 format. So Boston I believe was the. They were either. I think they were like the three seed or the. I trying to remember exactly. But they were one of the, you know, they. Listen, they were the Bruins. They were very good. They weren't that far removed from their back to back championships and they were a great team. And remember the Islanders going into that 19 straight series run that they had the four straight Stanley Cups. They were upset by the Leafs in 78, upset by the Rangers in 79. If they had lost to Boston, they.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Were going to blow up the team.
Peter Rosenberg
They were probably going to blow the team up. But they get Goring, they get Kenny Morrow from the Olympics. They beat Boston, they beat the Sabres, they beat the Flyers to win their first of four straight Stanley Cups. That's pretty significant. So one of the great have Aaron Bleep and Boone.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yep.
Peter Rosenberg
We don't have the, the Islanders and we didn't have Super Bowl 47. So it's tough list, man.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah, no, it's not easy to get on a list like that. But those are special. Quick story about that Islanders Bruins series. The late great Clark Gillies always tells the story about going into that series. He knew he. And this is, you know again NHL when men were men. He knew he had to fight Terry O'Reilly. Terry O'Reilly was one of the badasses of the NHL and that's just how the game was back then. And in the old Boston Garden. Remember There was the smaller rink. They played on the smaller rink, and it made it difficult. You couldn't get anywhere. So they would build up.
Peter Rosenberg
I can't believe they got away with that for as long as they did in Chicago, too. Yeah, it's crazy, but especially there, the.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Corners were tight, and therefore, if you were a team that played speed or you just. You had no room and they would. They always got big, hulking players that just manhandled you in the game. And so O'Reilly just would lead the way as far as the physicality goes. And Gillies was the Islanders tough guy. And he knew going into this, I'm going to have to face him. I got to fight him. He wasn't afraid of him, but he just knew the moment was coming. He said that before the. I think it was game one or two. He was in the hotel room and he was like, gonna throw up. And the Boston media was talking about how the Islanders are soft and the Bruins are gonna roll right through him. Nystrom was furious. They were getting Gillies all fired up. He said he threw up before the game because he was so nervous and anxious about what he had to do. But then when he had the. He faced him up and that was okay. It's go time. Dropped the gloves, absolutely pounded him. It's one of the greatest fights now. It's on grainy video. But I had a friend of mine back in the day, in the 90s, a Newsday guy who had those fight videos they used to make on vhs, and he gave me a copy of it to watch.
Peter Rosenberg
Like the Don Cherry Rock Em Sock.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Unnamed Speaker 1
And I'm telling you, man, just watching it now, it was just an epic fight. And the Islanders, from that point in the series forward, just ran rough shot. Sent them home.
Peter Rosenberg
When I get done with it, I'm gonna give you the Ken Morrow book that Alan Crocker.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I have. I have it. It's my summary.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm really buzzing through it. It's. It's really good stuff. And the Olympics. And then Kenny Morrow went from. Was it like 62 games, preliminary round, like, all the stuff that they. To get ready for the Olympics, then the Olympic Games, and then, like, they won. They won the gold medal on February 24th. And then like a handful of days later, he's.
Unnamed Speaker 1
No, no. He was on the Nassau Coliseum Ice.
Peter Rosenberg
March 1, I think it was, against the Detroit Red Wings. A day game at the Coliseum, plays the final 18 regular season games, and then goes on a Cup run. It was. It was identical from the February 24th they won the gold medal. May 24th they won the cup. So in like three months he won a gold medal and a Stanley Cup. Just really incredible stuff. That was the list brought to you by bet3.5.
Alan Hahn
He brought it again.
Peter Rosenberg
Whatever the moment, it's never ordinary at bet3.6 5.

Unnamed Speaker 1
He had a 3:1 pitch and of course they throw that silly curve that goes out of the zone. He can't lay off it. It'd be calling me. All right, Castillo, come on, show me something. What do you got?
Peter Rosenberg
Right down the middle. Just blew it by him. It's something you tell you grandkids.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I'll tell you what, I give him credit.
Peter Rosenberg
He challenged fastball.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I thought he made a coward about it and throw it out of his own unethical.
Alan Hahn
He thought he'd be unethical by not wanting.
Unnamed Speaker 1
He was surprised by it. Yeah, he was. Because he was so late on the swing. Yeah, he was absolutely surprised. He was going to throw him a.
Peter Rosenberg
Fastball there if the Mets play. And it looks like they're going to play. No Juan Soto tonight. I guess he's getting a day after the Mets are looking for the sweep. Yankees are playing the rubber game of the three game set. I'll tell you, there's just so much going on.
Alan Hahn
What was the Mets score last night? Don?
Peter Rosenberg
The Mets score last night. That was in. Got him 2 to 1. Just gave me a second. I mean I was watching it Will Marco.
Alan Hahn
It was an easy one.
Peter Rosenberg
It was one of the rare times like Marco was up because it was actually a pretty quick game. It was after 9:30. It was after his bedtime. But he was, he was getting caught up. I was flipping between that and. And jets stars. I was rooting for the jets, he was rooting for the Stars. So there was some problems there. But 9th inning got. Got a little dicey. Lindor, another error, but the Mets got out of it. And I. We actually had our first like, sports high five moment.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Really?
Peter Rosenberg
They got. He got the final out. We high fived for bed. Buddy, you got to get up there.
Unnamed Speaker 1
He's starting to, like, starting to feel Mets again.
Peter Rosenberg
He's starting to feel Mets. Well, because, you know, the Yankees haven't done any favors recently playing these west coast games.
Unnamed Speaker 1
It doesn't help him.
Peter Rosenberg
So. No, he's getting. He loves Lindor.
Unnamed Speaker 1
This is a big weekend for him.
Peter Rosenberg
This is going to be.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Think about it. When does he turn 8?
Peter Rosenberg
He turns 8 December 5th.
Unnamed Speaker 1
This is a big weekend.
Peter Rosenberg
This might be the turning point.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You think this might, this might clinch.
Peter Rosenberg
Might.
Unnamed Speaker 1
I almost feel like maybe have him on. Can we have him on Monday? We'll recap.
Peter Rosenberg
Check his availability, see if he's.
Unnamed Speaker 1
How he's feeling about the weekend.
Alan Hahn
No, you know what? Honestly though, it should be Don, without telling him, should pull out the phone and record a conversation.
Peter Rosenberg
That's.
Alan Hahn
That's the way to do it. What are you feeling here?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Nervous.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Do. Do like Monica McNutt does. Just set the phone up on video on a table. The two of you are watching. And then when. Whenever the game ends on Sunday, then you just kind of have it. Assess with him the weekend and see what he's feeling.
Peter Rosenberg
Because what I, I'm being really serious here. Like, I am not swaying him now. He sees a lot. See, I gotta watch the Yankees too, but, you know, I'm not pumping my fist when the Yankees win the way the Mets win. So he sees that I'm a Met fan.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
But I'm not influencing. I'm not telling him what to do. I want this to be organic. Is the only way it's actually going to stick if it's. If he's the one that's making the decision.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You're doing the right thing.
Peter Rosenberg
So you're doing the right thing right now. He loves players. He loves Lindor. He loves Soto. He also loves Judge.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
So what'll be interesting this weekend is that he'll start rooting for those players to do well. But at some point, I'm going like, all right, so who. Who you want to win this game? You know, and that might.
Unnamed Speaker 1
You'll know. You won't have that test going. You'll know late in the game. If they're close games. Don't you think you'll know just by the way he's reacting. I think that's big. This is big.
Alan Hahn
This could be a very important weekend.
Unnamed Speaker 1
By the way, Bedtime. Really? At school, you send them to bed.
Peter Rosenberg
What do you do?
Unnamed Speaker 1
Like, when they're tired, they go to bed.
Peter Rosenberg
Even on a school night.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, but you don't have. You don't believe in bedtime. Well, let me say this. Don't act like Don's the weird one for having a bedtime.
Unnamed Speaker 1
No, I found that interesting.
Alan Hahn
That exists.
Peter Rosenberg
You found it interesting?
Unnamed Speaker 1
I never did that.
Peter Rosenberg
Even. 9:30? That's kind of aggressive. It should be early.
Unnamed Speaker 1
But I'm watching a game with Zach, like we watch.
Peter Rosenberg
He's 16 years old.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Well, no, he's not. He's 20, but whatever. But no, when he was Marco's age, we would sit up and we might even watch the west coast game.
Peter Rosenberg
Even on a school night.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Oh, yeah. He would sit with me. Yeah. He'd fall asleep on the couch. I'd carry him up. But I'm not sending him up. We're watching sports.
Alan Hahn
Watching sport now. Why? So did only he get that?
Unnamed Speaker 1
Yeah, the girls aren't interested.
Peter Rosenberg
So did they get.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Now Cali will fall asleep on the couch watching hockey with me and. Same thing. I'll carry her up now. I can't. She's getting kind of big.
Alan Hahn
But. But. But neither had a bedtime.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Not really.
Alan Hahn
I will say this. I'm.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Because they know, like, when they're tired, they go to bed.
Alan Hahn
It's tempting. It's hard to know who I want to troll here more between Don and Alan.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Why are you trolling? Why? It's my bedtime.
Alan Hahn
No, no, because both things are interesting. Like, you sound crazy by sound. By sounding surprised that Don has a bedtime.
Unnamed Speaker 1
No, I didn't mean it.
Alan Hahn
But in reality, I didn't have a bedtime as a kid, really, either. Like, my parents would if it got very. If. Like, if the Orioles were playing like a West coast game and they could hear me listening to John Miller at 1:00am they might be like, okay, turn off the radio and go to bed.
Peter Rosenberg
No, I didn't really get a bed. But at seven.
Alan Hahn
Seven's very young, though.
Peter Rosenberg
And plus, it's. Also. Do me a favor, because I gotta deal with him in the morning and listen, he's actually a pretty early riser. Like when they sleep in. Like Jalen will sleep. Like if I don't wake her up, she might sleep till noon.
Unnamed Speaker 1
Love it.
Peter Rosenberg
She's definitely like me.
Alan Hahn
That's like you, right? Till noon.
Peter Rosenberg
It's funny, Marco, they get up at 6:35 like on a non school night. Marco will get up at 7. Like you run downstairs and you know, grab the computer or whatever. But if he's, if he's up when he doesn't want to be up, like every answer is tremendous. And not wanting to eat and then going and then trying to pass out on the couch. I'm doing myself a favor.
Alan Hahn
That makes sense.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, all right. A lot of people want to talk about the list. We'll get to that too. Nick's a lot of things on the table, but you never know where the show's going to go. On Don Hahn and Rosenberg right here on ESPN New York and the ESPN New York Apple.

The episode kicks off with a deep dive into the NBA playoffs, focusing on the potential of the New York Knicks overcoming the Boston Celtics.
