Alan Hahn
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 880 Eastern, ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers.
Peter Schrager
All right into the 4 o'clock hour we go with Don Lagra and Peter rosenberg. I'm Alan Hahn. 800 now 193776 to the calls. We'll get you there. Mets and the Twins are now tied. We into the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but yet a runner on second. Diaz is pitching for the Mets here. Obviously not a safe situation. So we'll just keep an eye on.
Peter Rosenberg
This curious on the road. You brought it up to me during.
Peter Schrager
The break, so we'll discuss, we'll see where this goes, but we'll keep you posted. Certainly on that. But into a football conversation we go or continue at least after Joe Shane spoke today telling us a lot of things about the Giants and their draft situation on get up this morning, we boy, we had a crew in on the NFL side of things and one of the guys is one of our new faces here. It's a phase everybody knows, but now part of our team at espn, that's Peter Schrager, who's kind enough to give us a few minutes and join us right here on the show, making his debut.
Dave Rothenberg
Welcome.
Peter Schrager
What's up, Shregs?
Jacob Anthony
Guys, what's up? Fired up to be with you and Alan was cool kicking it today. And Peter, Don, big fan of both of your work. So this is cool for me.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you. Right back at you.
Peter Schrager
But let's get it started on the Giants stuff here since we were just talking about it and you guys, I know, talked about it a lot. There are fans, believe it or not, Peter in New York that even argued with a legend like Carl Banks on why the Giants shouldn't take Abdul Carter at 3 because it's redundant. You already have a guy like Burns, you this and that. Like it seems like an obvious thing for them to do and it seems like he's probably like 95% going to be there at the 3 pick. What are you hearing? What do you know about that?
Jacob Anthony
I go back to week 16 and Malik Neighbors goes for about 200 yards and the Giants beat the Colts. And in a lot of ways, it was this cool moment for Giants fans. All right, look, Neighbors is a stud and we've got some talent here, but it knocked them out of contention for that first pick. I think they would have taken Cam Wardens in the first pick. I truly believe that would have been the selection. But they don't have an option right now to get him. He's going to be gone in the first pick. The thought is that Travis Hunter goes to or Abdul Carter goes to. I believe, and I've said this all along, and here's where I'm kind of hamstrung by the whole mock draft industry. I talk to every team a lot. I do, and it's my job and I take a lot of pride in that. I'm pretty plugged in for the local teams, too. And at no point, at no point was I one of these guys is out there being like, well, Shador is going two or three. And I was always. There are three blue chip prospects in this draft. Travis Hunter, Abdul Carter and Ashton Genti, the running back who would not go third overall. If the Giants could get one of these two guys, Hunter or Carter, that is the decision that probably will be made. Now. They look at their team and this is from sources within the Giants organization. They look at their team and they think the strength of their team is up front. So that is not wrong that this might look redundant. That said, if you can add an Abdul Carter to a defense that already has Dexter Lawrence, who might be the game's best defensive tackle, Kevon Thibodeau, who's a young up and coming pass rusher who we're hoping has a big leap this season, and Brian Burns, who's been established as one of the best pass rushers in the sport. You have a strength, you have something that you can lean on. They added to the defensive backfield already this offseason with the two players and in Pawson Obito, and then of course, the safety Javon Holland, and then you got Russell and Jamis to kind of hold the fort. And then you maybe get a quarterback later in the first round if you trade back in or the second round, that to me is nothing. Is not crazy. Passing on Shador Sanders is not crazy. And if I'm a Giants fan, I'm doing flips. If you have Abdul Carter in the.
Peter Rosenberg
Building and I'm old enough to remember 1981, when the Giants selected Lawrence Taylor, they had tons of linebackers they didn't need a linebacker. But, you know, you don't pass on Lawrence Taylor. Is Carter at that kind of ilk, where, yeah, we got a lot of defensive linemen, but you know what? Can't pass on this kind of talent.
Jacob Anthony
They passed on Micah Parsons a few years ago. They traded back. They ended up getting Kadarius Tony in that draft. And I think that's one of the original sins of this Giants team. That and paying Daniel Jones. And that's where you're at at this point. You don't have, you know, to look back and say, well, we. We missed on Josh Allen. You took Saquon. That wasn't the worst decision in the world at the time. It didn't work out. Whatever it is, you can't pass on the same type of player. And that is what Abdul Carter is now. I can't say he's gonna be as good as Michael Parsons, but he asked to be moved this year so he could show his versatility. He played defensive end, he could play off the ball, linebacker. He could do a lot of different things. And it's, It's. It's unanimous across the board. Every GM I talked to, it says two guys, Hunter and Carter. And then if you need a running back, this guy Genti could be the best of all of them. So those are three premier players. You have the third overall pick. Unless you're trading back. I don't think it's a redundancy to take an Abdul Carter because you don't have a special talent like him who can move all over the chessboard.
Peter Schrager
Shregs, what do you then make of the Giants last minute having workouts and no more private workouts with Shador Sanders, with Jalen Milroe, with Tyler Schuck, three quarterbacks that more than. I mean, they're not going to take him at 3. Does it indicate a move up into the later part of the first round or, you know, something that they would want to do to start the second round? It seems like they still will be targeting a quarterback. It's just not necessarily that three pick.
Jacob Anthony
It very well could. And I don't think it's crazy to think that One of those four quarterbacks would be there at 34. And it's not crazy to think that all of those quarterbacks could be there at 34. Or if you want to trade back into the first round, if you really like one, the conventional thinking is Shador Sanders will go in the top 10. I don't have a team for him right Now I everyone assumes New Orleans Raiders, Raiders, they just signed Geno Smith to a deal. They look at Geno to be the quarterback of the future, like for the, for the near term, the short term. And they have a sixth overall pick. They're not looking to take a quarterback. So it's interesting. Shador could slide or I could be wrong and he can go like you said, six to the Raiders, seven to the jets, nine to the Saints. And I'll put my hand up and say, gosh, I from all my intel that did not go that way and I've been surprised before but 34 is a really nice pick and if you want to trade up so you get the guy for a fifth year and you want to get a quarterback where it's different. If you take them at 34, you got only a four year contract. You take them at 32, you get them for five years. And that's why the Ravens traded up to get lamar Jackson at 32. It's why the Vikings traded up to get Teddy Bridgewater at 32. You move into the first round, you get an ext year on the contract where you could pay them the rookie deal. That's conventional thinking. And one of those guys will be there for the second round pick for sure. Is there someone they really like? Well, they're going to take all their do their time and their due diligence to see if, if there's someone they love. And a lot of the times with this, this final workout is to just check the box like we know we like them. We just want to meet them one more time to make sure the Giants are doing that. I respect it.
Peter Rosenberg
So when you're saying all the quarterback you think there's a world in which Sanders is there at 34, I'd be very surprised. But he could still sink pretty deep into the first round though.
Jacob Anthony
I think it's possible, guys.
Peter Schrager
I mean that's interesting and that's. That's been kind of the whisper. If you could felt this the whole even though everybody has mocked him high.
Jacob Anthony
A lot of tension, a lot of tension with this because of multiple reasons. One, we've been wrong before and said, oh, quarterback isn't going to go that high. And then you have egg on your face. Everyone was telling you Shador, you don't want to go. Dion is a huge presence in our world, a huge presence in football world. Dion obviously is one of the greatest players of all time. But he worked at NFL Network for many years. He worked at CBS for many years. He has relationships around the league. Who wants to be the guy to say, I think Chidor Sanders is going to sink like a stone? I don't think it's going to happen, but I think there's a possibility that Cam Ward goes one, and then it's a game of chicken and it's like, who's going to take the next quarterback? And if he falls past the saints at 9, I don't know. Another, I mean, 21 to me, would be the bookend, it would be the backstop. But if the Steelers like someone better, well, then I don't have another team that's in that first round that's like, we have to have a quarterback in the first round.
Dave Rothenberg
So in your eyes, Peter, like, what's the. What's the real deal on Shador? Like, we've gotten such mixed signals on what he could be. And you're saying there's a chance a team would decide this could be our guy, but other teams who need a quarterback would stare him right in the face and say, I'm good. How do you essentially view Shadors talent?
Jacob Anthony
Yeah, this is, this is the problem with the draft process because not. Not. It's like not every one size fits all. I say it's like Baskin Robbins. You got 31 flavors, you got different quarterbacks. So, like, one guy might look at a quarterback and say, that's not our type of guy, or that's not my type of offense I want to run. Another one would say, oh, I love it. What Shador brings is incredible anticipation, great poise, awesome leadership. These are more like the intangible stuff. It's not the Anthony Richardson, you know, giant body and 4, 340 that wows everyone and forces the Colts to take them fourth overall. It's not the Trey Lance, where it's like, oh, my gosh, he can run the 4, 3 40, but he also can throw it. It's not Zach Wilson, where he's going to throw that ball at the pro. That stuff is what's tantalizing. Door doesn't have that, doesn't pop off tape. What he has is like more of a Drew Brees, more of a Baker Mayfield, where it's. It's not the physical ability. It's more of, oh, gosh, he's running around behind a terrible offensive line and he's still making the play and he's still throwing the pass. It's hard to put that on paper. Okay, well, that's. That's what I'm going to bank with. It's much Easier to bank on the freakish athletic ability, even if you're way off. And the guy doesn't have the same numbers and the same career at college.
Peter Schrager
All right, I wanted to give you an opportunity because you had so much passion about it, and we were on the set together this morning about the Knicks. So give me a prediction of what you see in this series coming up with the Pistons and how you're feeling as a Knicks fan.
Jacob Anthony
I'm nervous as hell, guys. I'm nervous because the last 10 games of the season, it's like, I know we didn't have Brunson, so we're watching a lot of Delon Wright, and we're watching a lot of, you know, Tyler Kolek. We're watching. So I don't. I don't have this vision of them recently of, like, humming at all parts. And now it's, okay, here comes the playoff. Suddenly we're going to turn it on. I'm worried about game one Saturday. Like, come out of the gates. The last time we saw the Pistons was a couple days ago, and I know we didn't have the full team, but it was like, all right, that team scares me. They're young, they talk a lot of smack, they're tough. This Isaiah Stewart seems like a nightmare to deal with. And it's. We made all these moves. We had such a good first few months of the season, and now it's the playoffs and it's like, all right, we're just going to snap our fingers. And Brunson and Cat and Bridges, it's all going to work. Guys, I'm being honest. I'm nervous about this first round series, and I'm on these ESPN shows this week, and Alan, you're there, and it's like, you know, if they don't get past the Celtics or the Cavs, it's a disappointment. I'm like, tough as the Cavs. Let's beat the Pistons. The Pistons scare me. Am I the only one voicing that opinion?
Dave Rothenberg
No.
Peter Rosenberg
There's a lot of fans.
Peter Schrager
You sound like a lot. What? A lot of fans.
Dave Rothenberg
Yeah, a lot of fans. They should scare you.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, are you one of those fans that if they were to lose to the Pistons, you'd want Tibbs gone?
Peter Schrager
Oh, don't say it. Don't say it, Shrek.
Jacob Anthony
I wouldn't. I wouldn't. Because I'm looking at a roster of the last few weeks, and it's like we're asking, you know, Shamet to score 20 a game, and we're asking you know, big moments we have. We have guys that have not been asked to campaign is being asked to lead us, you know, to score. It's. It's going to come down to these big new acquisitions, like, this is the moves we traded all these draft picks from. Mikhail Bridges have a ton of playoff experience, but we're asking him, like, you need to be. You need to step up. So I am not going to blame Tibbs. I think the roster looks great going into the playoffs, but, gosh, is that bench thin. And that's nothing against the players that were asked to do a lot over the last month of the season. But we can't be asking for big minutes out of, you know, Shamet and Kolek here in the playoffs and asking them to lead us. No way.
Peter Schrager
No. This is why you made these trades. It's time for the stars to be stars. You're going to be there Saturday.
Jacob Anthony
Step up. Yes, step up. I mean, I love you in the regular season, but this is why we brought you in here. No more. And this. This. This Pistons team, they're tough around the rim, and they're angry and they're mean, and it's like, all right, Cat, that's. Let's see that side of you if you got it, because you are. If he can bring it, like, guys, this guy could be a legend in New York.
Peter Schrager
Yeah, I think he knows it. You're going to be there Saturday. You got all this draft coverage to do.
Jacob Anthony
I'll be there. I'm gonna. I'm gonna. I'm gonna see if I can get there Saturday, 6 o'clock. If I'm not there, I'll be on my couch biting a pillow, being like.
Peter Schrager
You and a million other Knick fans. Shregs, thanks so much for the time and always great to talk to you awesome guys.
Jacob Anthony
So happy to be around and appreciate all your work. And it's really cool to be on the show.
Dave Rothenberg
Cheers.
Peter Schrager
Peter Schrager again, just as you saw him on NFL Network for many years. It was a fun show. The good morning football and a lot of his coverage as well, and he's now a teammate. Espn.
Peter Rosenberg
Just. Just the mere suggestion that there. All this time, all this talk, all this chatter, that there's a world in which we're going to go into day two and Sanders isn't picked. Now, he said he didn't think it.
Peter Schrager
Was going to happen, that somebody would. Would make the move and just do it, but who?
Peter Rosenberg
But I just. I've been picturing it.
Peter Schrager
One quarterback in a. In A first round of a, of a draft. Think about it that way. 1. One quarterback's going to go in the first round. When's the last time in a league.
Dave Rothenberg
In a league in which. A league that has bereft of quarterback.
Peter Schrager
It has. What was the last time only one quarterback was selected in the first round of an NFL draft?
Dave Rothenberg
It's a great question.
Peter Schrager
The last 25 years and having one.
Peter Rosenberg
One go.
Dave Rothenberg
One.
Peter Schrager
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Having the one and nobody else get picked. Listen, I don't think it's going to happen, but if you don't like him, you don't like them, right? I mean, like, it's one thing to say, okay, I got a chance here to take a quarterback late in the first round, but it's one thing to trade back into the first round after you've already selected someone in the first round. But to have that be your pick and you're not in love with them, even though it might be a low first round pick, if it's somebody's first pick, Allen in the first round, you gotta still like them.
Peter Schrager
Anthony's looking it up. 2022. 2022 draft. It just feels like every year there was always a couple of.
Peter Rosenberg
In fairness, this was not looked upon as a great draft.
Peter Schrager
No.
Peter Rosenberg
That we've heard things like old JJ McCarthy would go ahead of Ward and Sanders.
Peter Schrager
All right, let's. Let's take a look. It just. Can you name the one quarterback taking 2022 draft. That's what I'm doing here. That's what I'm doing here. The 2022 draft.
Dave Rothenberg
It's probably staring us right in the face. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
First legitimate staring us.
Peter Schrager
No, there wasn't a quarterback taken in the top 10 that year. The quarterback selected. Oh, I thought this draft had somebody, but no, it did not. I'll give you this. The quarterback selected was pick 20. And the team that picked him is picking around that same time and could.
Peter Rosenberg
Be looking for a quarterback. It's baby hands, right? Pick it.
Peter Schrager
Yes. Yeah.
Dave Rothenberg
The Baby Hand Assassin.
Peter Schrager
That's wild.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know whether it's because of his hands or whatever, but it's. It hasn't worked out right.
Dave Rothenberg
I mean, he's still playing. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
But it was. This is his third team.
Peter Schrager
Was the next quarterback taken in that draft.
Peter Rosenberg
But guys, the, the days of taking a flyer on a quarterback, it's just too important a position to just get it wrong.
Peter Schrager
And Desmond Ritter was the next pick.
Peter Rosenberg
There you go.
Peter Schrager
Third round. Malik Willis, third round.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a quarterback league. And yet. And really the only reason that Sanders is getting the play is because it's Dion's son.
Peter Schrager
Yeah, that's what. You know, it's funny, Mel Kuiper has said if his name was Jones, he'd be a second round pick. And yet he's also saying that he's the best. He thinks he's one of the best quarterbacks in the. Here's Mel Kuiper. This was Barton Carlin where he ranks Shador.
Mel Kiper
I'm a Shador guy, but I do think there's a significant gap for me personally between Shador and Dart and Shadore and certainly Milroe and Shuck because I go, I go Shador, then Cam. So I'm Shador all the way. But to me, there's no Tyler Schuck and Jalen Milroe in the discussion with Shador Sanders. In terms of my grade there, there, it's a huge difference between the grade of those two and even Jackson Dart. I mean, Jackson Dart going to be around 26. Shador's at 5. That's a pretty good difference.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it sounds like he's.
Peter Schrager
Melkyr's been doing the draft for a million years and he has quarterback ranking Shador Sanders ahead of Cam Ward. Cam Ward is going to be the number one pick with a bullet. And Shador Sanders might get picked in the first day and might not. And by the way, he's not going to be in the green room. He's not going to be there. He did not take the invitation. He's going to be home.
Peter Rosenberg
But what does that tell you?
Peter Schrager
Well, it tells you that he doesn't want to be in the room with the camera on him, waiting for him. He doesn't want to be Aaron Rodgers and Dan Marino. He doesn't want to live that life.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. But actually his father's well aware of it.
Peter Schrager
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Like, if you are a guy that believes you're the best quarterback in the draft and if you know you're going high, you're there. I know it's Lambo, it's not sexy, but you're there. The fact that he's home tells you that there's a, there's there's a feeling that is as confident as you are. And I get you want to be confident that you know that there's, there's a possibility, there's a possibility that we can go deep into the first round and he's going to slip it. It's going to be Brady Quinn, it's going to be Thurman Thomas. Where they can keep checking in at the living room.
Peter Schrager
You remember the Aaron Rodgers one. That was unbelievable.
Peter Rosenberg
They could always turn off the camera at home.
Peter Schrager
Right?
Peter Rosenberg
So. But if you're sitting there in the, you know, in the green room, and they keep. They keep showing you as each pic goes on and on and on and on. And they do that for anybody that's projected. Imagine for him, Sanders son about so.
Dave Rothenberg
So they're going to turn down a camera in the house, too?
Peter Rosenberg
There's no camera in the house, is there?
Dave Rothenberg
No, I'm guessing no. If you're not going to go, no, I got to turn down. No, they're going to.
Peter Rosenberg
They're going to have a setup, but they're not gonna have a setup where they're gonna be peeking in on him. Every pick if he selected third, all of a sudden there's a camera there and he's celebrating with the family in the living room.
Dave Rothenberg
If he slips to 34, I wonder.
Peter Rosenberg
That camera's not gonna turn.
Peter Schrager
He's already dismantled.
Dave Rothenberg
I gotta tell you. How does that conversation work? What do you mean, I wonder? Like, ESPN does the draft.
Peter Schrager
Yeah, everybody does the draft.
Peter Rosenberg
Abc, espn, NFL Network.
Dave Rothenberg
I don't know how they go about talking to the families about where they're getting cameras installed in people's homes. Right. Everyone has to agree with it.
Peter Schrager
Yeah. And usually, like, some are fine with it just being set up in the living room. Everybody's sitting. I'm sure in those situations, there's a camera somewhere else in the house that you'll go and do your interview. You know what I mean?
Dave Rothenberg
Yeah, but like, if you know the.
Peter Schrager
Pic, it's coming to you. Cause you know, there's delay. You know what's coming and you're there for it.
Dave Rothenberg
But what if Sanders family's just like, hey, we're not doing well.
Peter Schrager
Remember, they do their own production of things and they probably will want exclusive on our thing. You know what I mean?
Dave Rothenberg
For whatever.
Peter Schrager
I don't think they'll share the original reaction. I think they'll do a sit down in front of, you know, they'll do something where they sit down in front of a camera that's static, that's in one one place in the house.
Dave Rothenberg
Wow, big news just came out of my football world.
Peter Schrager
What happened to you?
Dave Rothenberg
Washington D.C. and the Commanders. Close to a $3 billion deal for a new stadium at the RFK site in D.C. that is like for commie fans. It being out in Maryland, like, has always been wrong. Like, it would never be. If you want to know when do you officially say, like, it's over and we're back to the glory? If they go back to the original RFK site in dc, that it's true, Return to glory.
Peter Schrager
The building's still up, right?
Dave Rothenberg
Still there?
Peter Schrager
Because I think they drove past it and saw it was like a ghost town.
Dave Rothenberg
They've used it for soccer, they've used.
Peter Schrager
It for concerts, but it's not in great shape.
Dave Rothenberg
No, no, no. They would. They would blow it out and put it right there where it used to be. It would be. I don't know. Have you been to Fed. You've been to FedEx, right, Tom? Yeah, they're formerly FedEx. It is.
Peter Rosenberg
It's Landover, right?
Dave Rothenberg
It's in Landover. It is a dump. It's not near anything. There's nowhere to park.
Peter Rosenberg
I was there, whatever the year was Thursday night. Jets at the time, Redskins opening the season. So it might have even been earlier than that. So we're still going back away.
Dave Rothenberg
And it was dumped then, and it was new. It was a new dump, so. And it was always just such a bad look.
Peter Rosenberg
I felt that they did have public transportation. I remember taking the. I remember, like, staying in.
Dave Rothenberg
You know, how far.
Peter Rosenberg
Taking the train.
Dave Rothenberg
You know how far it is from the subway to the stadium.
Peter Rosenberg
Awful.
Dave Rothenberg
You know what I did the last time I took the subway to a game? I was, like, 25 years old. I literally just jumped in. A ride with someone, a stranger, you have to get. It's such a long walk from the train to the stadium. It's a nightmare. And it took energy away from this southeast neighborhood, which is a pretty rough neighborhood that the stadium was in. And at least once a week, you know, for the football season, it was alive and people were making money, and it was like a good thing.
Peter Rosenberg
Where is that in relation to where the Nationals play?
Peter Schrager
Well, the Nationals are right downtown.
Dave Rothenberg
The Nationals are in Southwest, so that's not a great area, which I had never even set foot in in my life until the Nationals went there. Southwest.
Peter Rosenberg
I was at the first ever game the Nationals played there.
Peter Schrager
Really?
Dave Rothenberg
So was I.
Peter Rosenberg
Show a buster.
Dave Rothenberg
Only I was there, too. That's very rare.
Peter Rosenberg
That's more Sunday night, Braves, Nationals.
Dave Rothenberg
Oh, in Washington. Sorry. I went to their first ever game, which was at Philly. Yeah, that must have been something. Oh, like you dream about. What's more random? Me choosing to go to the first ever Nationals game. Or don't. Doing the radio show with Buster. Only for the first home game.
Peter Schrager
What do you mean? That's not random? Don has done everything.
Dave Rothenberg
It's true.
Peter Schrager
Much, everyone, that is true.
Alan Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Dave Rothenberg
I didn't listen to anything you just said.
Alan Hahn
Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts.
Jacob Anthony
You just made the list, buddy.
Alan Hahn
This is the list with Don Hahn and Rosenberg.
Dave Rothenberg
You know, I love a list. We all love a list, don't we?
Peter Rosenberg
I love Lamp.
Dave Rothenberg
Now I want to say I love Lamp. Do you really love Lamp or are you just saying that?
Peter Schrager
Did you say that?
Peter Rosenberg
I said that.
Dave Rothenberg
He said it. Oh, you both said it.
Peter Schrager
You both think of the same thing. I didn't hear you.
Dave Rothenberg
Now listen, here's the. Let me just say I'm honest about lists, though. Lists that go beyond reason. I love Don's top fives. That he's always done is because with the top five, you can have a reasonable list that you truly believe in. When you get to like a top 25, oh, Lord. When you're beyond five or 10, certainly 10. But even five guys, don't you find that, like, all of a sudden the. The numbers are completely nothing? Like, you're just saying, what's the difference between 17 and 15? It's nothing. It's nothing. You're just saying you're trying to find places to put everything. With a top five, you can mean it. You know what I mean?
Peter Schrager
Yes. And you also are leaving usually at least one item out that could be in the top five.
Dave Rothenberg
Exactly.
Peter Schrager
And it leads to a better conversation about whether or not you should or shouldn't. Like, for instance, at some point, maybe at the end of these playoffs, we could do a new top five all time NBA players. Because maybe a player who's currently playing might do something to push his way into that top five.
Dave Rothenberg
But when you're down in the teens, what are you doing so right here? Today's top five is very personal to me. I'm not saying I wouldn't change my mind on it, because of course I would on a different day when it's something this near. And dear guys, this weekend from Las Vegas. It is the 41st edition of WrestleMania and it is bigger than it has ever been. It's absolutely crazy at this point. My WrestleMania weekend starts tomorrow. I'll be on First Take interviewing Cody Rhodes with Stephen A. The champ is gonna be on First Take tomorrow. Then I'm heading out to Vegas. Friday night, I'm hosting the red carpet for the hall of Fame, which I'm very excited about. Of all the, like, silly broadcasting things that like, we kind of aspire to. I've always wanted to host a proper red carpet show where I'm just interviewing whoever comes by.
Peter Rosenberg
Very good at that.
Peter Schrager
Yeah, it's my vibe wheelhouse for you.
Dave Rothenberg
It's right in my wheelhouse.
Peter Schrager
Absolutely.
Dave Rothenberg
I've never gotten the chance. And me and my friend who does a fantastic job, she's really becoming in a lot of ways, the queen of the NHL television broadcast. Jackie Redmond and I will be. Will be doing the coverage on the red carpet and then the countdown show Saturday and Sunday, which includes, by the way, guys, my full one on one sit down with triple H. That'll air in two parts over this weekend. So super excited about that.
Peter Schrager
Yeah. Oh, yeah, that was well done.
Peter Rosenberg
No, well, you have to use the names if you're promoting something you got.
Dave Rothenberg
So we.
Peter Schrager
Are we going tux? Are we going suit? We going three piece? What are we doing?
Dave Rothenberg
Well, you know, this is like my seventh or eighth WrestleMania. I am always a tux guy for this weekend. So I am bringing two different tuxedos.
Peter Schrager
Really?
Dave Rothenberg
Three different jackets. The third jacket, the one is a shaw collar, one is the pointed regular tux collar, and the third one lapel is the lapel collar. And the third one is the velvet, the full velvet, blue velvet, which, I don't know, we'll see if I feel like wearing it. I. I do enjoy it.
Peter Schrager
So that probably for the red carpet show.
Dave Rothenberg
That's what I was thinking. I would think velvet on the red car.
Peter Schrager
Little pop out of the pocket too.
Dave Rothenberg
Yeah, something there. And yeah, I'll make. I'll mix up black and white shirts, short bow tie and long tie. I'm mixing it all up all week.
Peter Schrager
Smart. All right. Lots of content for our, for our socials here. Oh, I'm sure for the show.
Dave Rothenberg
I hope they're dialed. Socials, screen grabbing me all week, all of it. Pictures, video, everything.
Peter Schrager
Look at our guys. Look at our guys.
Dave Rothenberg
And by the way, everything that I'm doing this weekend, all those pre shows and everything, they also all air live on YouTube so it's easy to watch and grab all of it now. Top five WrestleManias of all time. This is highly debated among wrestling circles. And this year I've seen quite a bit of it. I'll get into it. Number five. I wanted to pick one from the modern era, the truly modern era. And by that I mean the two night era, because the two night era started during COVID That was how it began. There was no crowd. They decided a wacky thing to do. It over two days with no audience and now it's led into what is the future two day events. I'm curious. Jacob Anthony, you guys can feel free to weigh in on this. I decided to go with my number five WrestleMania of all time, WrestleMania 38. Okay. It included Roman Reigns defending the title against Brock Lesnar, which was a super cool moment. Important in the Roman Reigns reign that we've seen. It also involved Mr. McMahon's final appearance. He had a match against Pat McAfee. We got to see Mr. McMahon get stunned by stone cold Steve Austin. We also got to see Steve Austin on the first night have probably his last ever wrestling match. And it exceeded all expectations when he beat Kevin Owens in a no holds barred match. Up and down. It was just a lot of fun. Logan Paul's first WrestleMania match with the Miz. He was incredible against the Mysterios. And of course, Bianca Belair, who's never been pinned at WrestleMania, beat Becky lynch for the championship. That's my number five WrestleMania. And for all of you people, you old heads who are going, I know nothing about that. Now I'll jump into the stuff. You'll be a little bit more familiar with my number four WrestleMania match of all time. Guys, how do you not talk about when wrestling was maybe at its most cool, its most mainstream, as mainstream as it is now. I think they're always chasing this moment. WrestleMania 14, Shawn Michaels and stone cold Steve Austin with the special guest referee scorching hot. Just a year to remove from jail, Iron Mike Tyson. I mean, this is when Mike Tyson was. If you didn't live through this time like the kids out there, you don't even know what it was to have intrigue as an athlete. Like the intrigue to see Tyson do anything after he got out of jail. Do you guys remember people wearing the I'll be back shirts? They were everywhere. Bootlegged constantly. And then Mike Tyson ends up involved in WrestleMania. He did a great job. I remember seeing it at the time and thinking, how are they working with this guy? He's completely unhinged. And yet he did an incredible job. It's just an iconic moment. Fleet center in Boston. Obviously the main thing you talk about is Austin and Michaels with Mike Tyson. But the Undertaker beat Kane, which is absolutely classic. You got Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie having a tag team match. There was just so much. The Rock beats Ken Shamrock. An awesome, fun one. But of course, that Mike Tyson involvement, to me is just so critical. The number three WrestleMania of all time. Now we're getting into Hulk Hogan territory. WrestleMania 18, Toronto, Ontario, at the Sky Dome. One of the most memorable things you will. If you want to see what electricity looks like in an arena, please go look at the moment when Hulk Hogan was standing across the ring from the Rock. It was something that, like, you never believed it was even humanly possible that you would see these guys have a match. And now when you guys look back at it, we thought of Hulk Hogan as, like, so old at that time. How could he even have a match? He was like. He was like 43 years old. He wasn't even that old. They put on a banger of a match, the crowd went up and down. But even beyond that, Chris Jericho and Triple H. Steve Austin and Razor Ramon Scott Hall. The Undertaker beat the living hell out of Ric Flair. Kurt Angle and Kane up and down. A fantastic card. WrestleMania 18, number three for me. Let's stay right next to it. I absolutely adore this WrestleMania. I know some people may not agree. The second best of all time to me goes out to Seattle. We're talking prime era. Limp Bizkit. This is pure attitude era at its finest. WrestleMania 19. The look of Safeco Field, guys, in Seattle was just insane. Hulk Hogan, Vince McMahon. All right, triple H beat Booker T. Which a lot of us are still very upset about. Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar. But of course, it was the rubber match between the Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. The last one. The Rock beats Steve Austin and sends him into retirement. And we didn't see him again until WrestleMania 38, 19 years later. That, to me, is the second greatest WrestleMania of all time. And number one, guys, it pains me to say this, Dave Rothenberg was there. It blows my mind. I can't believe it happened. I was lucky enough that a teacher's assistant at my primary school school recorded it on VHS for me, because, I don't know, you guys are. You guys might both be too old to appreciate this buying, getting pay per views as a kid. Because, like, you guys didn't really have that as an option as a kid, right?
Peter Schrager
Oh, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah, for sure.
Dave Rothenberg
There were pay per view as a kid. I mean, as a kid. Yes, as a little kid. What was. On point.
Peter Schrager
Not little kid, no, hbo. You'd have to pay. But. But yeah, teenagers, maybe. Teenagers. Yeah.
Dave Rothenberg
I was 8 years old. My parents did not buy pay per views. Now. They acted as if.
Peter Schrager
Expensive.
Dave Rothenberg
I remember, guys. No, no, expensive. It would have been like I was asking for a new house. Like, in retrospect, sometimes the answer is just bad Guy why they couldn't shell out 2999. It would have made my life. But fortunately, a teaching assistant named Mrs. Clemens loved wrestling. And the day after WrestleMania she brought me a VHS cassette with the greatest wrestling event of all time from The Pontiac's overdome. WrestleMania 3 right there for me to consume as an 8 year old.
Peter Schrager
Wow.
Dave Rothenberg
Ooh, yeah. All the feels, obviously what you just played. Macho Man, Randy Savage and Ricky the Dragon. Steamboat having what many believe is the greatest match of all time for the Intercontinental Championship. The undercard is great. All of your favorites are all over it. Roddy Piper and Adrian Adonis, because Roddy Piper was retiring for the first of nine times. But of course, you can't talk pro wrestling and what happened to this business without talking about Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. As I've gotten older, I've only appreciated more and more the story that they told in the ring and, and the fact that Andre was able to have that match with how physically bad off he was at that time. Guys, the guy like couldn't move anymore. And he managed to have one of the most epic matches of all time for me. I know people may see it, otherwise, it's the greatest. It'll never be topped. Number five, Mania 38. Number four, Mania 14. Number three Mania 18219 at Safeco in Seattle. And the greatest WrestleMania of all time, number one with a bullet. His WrestleMania.
Peter Rosenberg
I was ready to fight you. If it wasn't three, there wasn't being a top I knew it was going to be, so I just popped up the Wikipedia page to be prepared. And it brought back so many memories for me. My brother and I had the same room growing up, but then obviously when I went to college and we didn't stay in the same room, but whenever I'd be home and in his room, that WrestleMania 3 poster was always up there. And I just popped it up with Hulk looking right at Andre Pontiac Silver Dome. Such a big deal.
Dave Rothenberg
It changed everything. Without that, without that event. I mean, Vince McMahon really bet a lot of the business.
Peter Schrager
What year Was that again?
Dave Rothenberg
87. March. 87. It was a big, big deal. And I have one of the original event posters framed in my living room. I got it a few years ago in a mint condition black and white. It's a crazy thing because I guess what I also love about it and why it makes me feel so good is I lived through it and it was such a part of my childhood. Yet when you look at the poster, it's like, oh yeah, I am connected to like, old times. It looks literally like old times.
Peter Schrager
Is that the Super Bowl 3 for wrestling? If you think about it, yeah. Like, put it on the map for good.
Dave Rothenberg
Kind of confirmed. Because one, at MSG was a big deal. The fact that it was successful, it sold out. It was MSG, right. It was Mr. T. It's Cyndi Lauper. It's all those things. Liberace 2, they tried to get even bigger and they had. They had things in la, Chicago and New York. But the card for those who is.
Peter Rosenberg
Not it was at the Coliseum. Right. Two. Yes.
Dave Rothenberg
But it's not memorable in the same way. And then three, they go to the Silver Dome, which holds nearly 100,000 people. Now, was the real number 93,000. Nobody knows. But either way, it was packed to the gills.
Peter Schrager
Right.
Dave Rothenberg
It was certainly over 80,000, right?
Peter Schrager
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And Wikipedia has the attendance at 78,000, but that just might have been what. What Pontiac Silver Dome was for football. I don't know.
Dave Rothenberg
That's what people now say it is. WWE always said it was 93. They had a tendency to exaggerate. I don't know if Andre was quite 75 either. But, you know, I think their attendance figures have gotten more legitimate as the years have gone on. But. But yeah, it just the fact that it was Hogan versus Andre, too. Guys, Andre is a bad guy. It. Like, I've never. This is the one thing as great as wrestling is right now, and I love it, Mania weekend will be amazing. If you have kids of that age, throw on Peacock this week. Even if you haven't been watching it. Throw on Peacock Saturday or Sunday evening, you'll have the time of your life. But we'll never live in a time where when the bad guy like Andre the Giant is going to the ring, he's just being pelted with garbage by the whole stadium. It was still real enough then. You know what I mean?
Peter Schrager
I do.
Dave Rothenberg
It looks go look up him entering the ring. Him and Bobby Heenan are just swallowing.
Peter Schrager
There was a real visceral hatred.
Dave Rothenberg
Yeah.
Peter Schrager
For those characters then. That you definitely felt something.
Dave Rothenberg
Jacob, you think I should have included 17.
Peter Schrager
Yeah.
Anthony
TLC 2, like rockin. I mean, Rock and Stone Cold, Triple H and Undertaker.
Peter Schrager
There's always the one, right? You make a list of five. There's always gonna be one that was.
Anthony
That one of those WrestleManias, like, early in my childhood that I remember vividly. Like, that's probably the one that I've seen, like, cover the COVID the most.
Dave Rothenberg
Yeah. It also had Shane versus Vince.
Anthony
Yeah.
Dave Rothenberg
Street Fight, which Is I also say.
Anthony
Too probably that Brett Shawn Michaels Iron man match, Was that WrestleMania 13?
Dave Rothenberg
Yeah. And that's getting honored this weekend at the hall of Fame. Anyways, that was my list and I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you. If you don't like wrestling, thank you for tolerating.
Peter Rosenberg
Did a great job. You know what? You know what I found out today? Actually just found out a little while ago, David, my brother, who's on his way right now to Vegas for Wrestlemania was on Michelle Beatles podcast.
Dave Rothenberg
I just saw that too.
Peter Rosenberg
And he, he talked about. Remember I always bring up the two game sevens. Rangers, Capitals, Devils, Hurricanes. And this station made me go to, to, to Madison Square Garden for that event. What was, what was the event again? It's 2009. I forget what. I don't know if it was a Royal Rumble.
Dave Rothenberg
You have to interview someone or something.
Peter Rosenberg
No, I just. I had to be with some listeners this week. Me and Michelle were in the suite, so I brought my brother and it was a smack, I guess. Must have a smackdown. It was like a Monday.
Dave Rothenberg
Oh, there was Raw.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. And that was that day my brother's show, Busted Open debuted. I never knew that, that it was the same day, the same day history.
Dave Rothenberg
And now it's the biggest wrestling radio show in the world.
Peter Rosenberg
He was saying that Michelle has some ties to my brother's.
Dave Rothenberg
Yeah, I saw the headline and didn't know what they were talking about because.
Peter Rosenberg
We were all hanging out. I was ignoring the wrestling. They could have been just around bunnies. I was. There was two game sevens at the same time. This nation's done me dirty many times. No worse than that.
Peter Schrager
But you always show up.
Dave Rothenberg
The list was brought to you by.
Peter Rosenberg
It was a sponsor.
Peter Schrager
Oh yeah, how about that?
Dave Rothenberg
Like you dream about. The list was brought to you by bet365. Whatever the moment, it's never ordinary. At bet365. Now, guys, I have a message from betterhelp. Therapy is a big investment. There's no way around it, all right? It's an investment mentally, emotionally and financially. All right? But think about it. Your state of mind is important as the state of your body. You know what right now is a good time for? What is that a good time for? Game time. Brought to you by Tullamore Do Irish Whiskey. Because when it's game time.
Dave Rothenberg
Oh, he's back.
Peter Schrager
It's so back. Mets lost to the Twins in 10 innings.
Peter Rosenberg
Disgusted.
Peter Schrager
Wow. 43 was your final. They rallied in the eighth. They were down three, zip, tie it and then, you know, the ghost runner ends up scoring. And that's the game. That's so the Mets take an L. They dropped to 11 and 7. Now on the season, the Yankees will close out their series with the Royals. I believe they can go for the sweep.
Peter Rosenberg
Correct.
Peter Schrager
705 first pitch tonight. Devils hosting the Red Wings at 7:30. Can the Devils just get to the playoffs? Now? Enough of this. Enough of these games.
Peter Rosenberg
It's kind of got like a Nick feel to it.
Dave Rothenberg
So boring. We know.
Peter Rosenberg
And we've known for like two weeks. They're playing the Hurricanes. Enough already.
Peter Schrager
Yeah, even last night's games. Like, can we, can we just go on?
Dave Rothenberg
That's the thing about these.
Peter Schrager
Welcome our audience on 880, by the way.
Dave Rothenberg
Oh, now we do.
Peter Schrager
We are on 880 now. Back on 880. We were on the ESPN New York app, of course.
Dave Rothenberg
What did you guys think of the list? Oh, you missed it.
Peter Schrager
They missed that. But you can get it on the podcast, of course. So always make sure and subscribe to the podcast. Tell them. Or do the original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Telemardu or try the new Tullamore Do. Honey, during tonight's action. Glasses up to enjoying Tullamore Do.
Dave Rothenberg
Oh, I need to tell you something.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes, please.
Dave Rothenberg
I have a major announcement at 5:00.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, cool.
Dave Rothenberg
Don't. No, sell it.
Peter Schrager
A major.
Peter Rosenberg
I said. Oh, cool.
Peter Schrager
That's a major award.
Dave Rothenberg
No, no, Alan, give me something better than that. Than him just saying. Oh, cool. Like I just told him I wore pro Keds to work.
Peter Schrager
Thanks.
Dave Rothenberg
I have a major announcement at 5:00.
Peter Schrager
Can't wait.
Dave Rothenberg
I didn't say rip off Bart Scott either. Let me try.
Peter Schrager
I don't know what he wants me to do here.
Dave Rothenberg
I mean, no curiosity.
Peter Schrager
Oh, this guy really wants you to perform for him, huh, guys?
Peter Rosenberg
Clown here.
Dave Rothenberg
I'm gonna try again. Let's see what Don does. Don.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Dave Rothenberg
I've got a major, major. I'm talking about. This will impact your life. You're gonna care. Five o'clock. Your life will be affected. I'm announcing for seven minutes.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm intrigued.
Peter Schrager
I am intrigued.
Peter Rosenberg
That's not the way he sold it, by the way. He way oversold it the second time.
Peter Schrager
Yeah. The first time he's like, I have a major announcement to make.
Dave Rothenberg
I think, I think I'll put it this way. Is it the biggest thing that's ever happened in the history of life? No. Is it bigger than something Michael K. Would tease when he would be like, hey, guys, I have something very exciting coming up and it'll be nothing and a sandwich. And it'd be I brought baloney to work. No. You're gonna hear a big announcement on this program that's gonna affect everyone's life.
Peter Schrager
Everyone's life.
Dave Rothenberg
Everyone, my life, you, the audience. Everybody's affected by this.
Peter Schrager
The audience is affected.
Dave Rothenberg
5:00.
Peter Schrager
We have to wait. We have to wait another six minutes.
Dave Rothenberg
And talk to the people in between.
Peter Schrager
Bigly Frank in New Jersey. What's up, Frank?
Jacob Anthony
Peter, especially for you. There are going to be some tremendous matches this weekend. I know I have my own particular favorite. What is your most anticipated WrestleMania match for this weekend?
Dave Rothenberg
I think I am most curious. I'm. I think I'm ultimately most curious about the Cena Cody match because I just don't know where they go with that. I can't really picture either thing happening. And to me that's what makes that riveting. But I think the, I think the actual, in terms of the quality of match, the triple threat on Saturday night, I think is going to be a gem.
Peter Schrager
Jonathan in la. What's up, Jonathan?
Jacob Anthony
Hi, guys.
Dave Rothenberg
Hi.
I
For three of you guys and for Peter, differently Peter, I'm actually going to WWE World. I'm just gonna be going to WrestleMania Sunday, but I got tickets to meet Mike Tyson at 10 in the morning Sunday. I'm asking you, are you going to be at WWE World Sunday morning?
Dave Rothenberg
But you're meeting him at World or somewhere else you mean?
I
Yeah, I'm meeting them at World. I got those tax those tickets that you can actually meet.
Dave Rothenberg
Oh, I didn't know Tyson, I didn't know Tyson was doing me a meet and greet at at World.
I
I couldn't afford a Stone Cold or Undertaker. So Mike Tyson was the one.
Dave Rothenberg
Mike was under Mike. Mike was priced lower than Stone Cold and Undertaker. What are they running what are they running to meet Mike tyson at the WWE World.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm curious.
I
Was 180 for me and my son.
Dave Rothenberg
Does that include a picture?
I
Yes, a picture and meet him and autograph, I guess. But undertaking so cold we're looking at 450 to $600.
Peter Schrager
That's.
I
Are you gonna be at Will?
Dave Rothenberg
No, I gotta be at the building. I'm gonna be at Mania already by like 10:00am so this thing he's talking.
Peter Rosenberg
About was where we were at last year in Philly, right?
Dave Rothenberg
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Dave Rothenberg
It's even bigger this year. They're going even harder.
Peter Rosenberg
Sorry, I mean Vegas, you might get over there.
I
Peter, guys, really quick. The playoffs are. Are you about to start? I just want to see what are you guys. Pick some good hardwood on who's going to win the championship and some good ice picks on who for Donnie, who's going to win the Sandy Cup.
Peter Schrager
Hardwood. We haven't done a hardwood over there, Peter. Thank you, Jonathan.
Dave Rothenberg
Thank you, buddy. Look for me on. Look for me. I'll be outside for the second like the second and third hour of the countdown show. You can go to our outside stage and find me. I'll be out there.
Peter Schrager
Don, one bold prediction about the Stanley cup playoffs.
Peter Rosenberg
If Montreal makes it. They need a point tonight to clinch eight. They. My bold prediction is they'll beat Washington.
Peter Schrager
I like that. See. Wow. I'm going. I'm going something similar. The Chicago Bulls tonight playing for the eighth seed.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Peter Schrager
They have to win and then they have to win again. I think they're getting the eighth seed.
Jacob Anthony
Okay.
Peter Schrager
And I think they're going to. They're going to get a couple of games off of Cleveland.
Peter Rosenberg
I can see that.
Peter Schrager
Their offense the second half of the season for them. People sleep on this team because they give up a lot of points.
Peter Rosenberg
Pretty bold picks we just made.
Peter Schrager
Yeah, yeah.
Dave Rothenberg
Don't look at you guys. Not messing around.
Peter Schrager
Lock them in. Eight seat. All right. I guess big news in the 5:00 hour from our own Peter Rosenberg. That and let's discuss the Mets all of a sudden.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Peter Schrager
Juan Soto, by the way. 0 for 5, 3 strikeouts. What's their record now since he opened his big fat mouth?
Dave Rothenberg
Yankee. Yankee boy hates what he feels about.
Peter Rosenberg
It because they won the day he said it. They're 1 and 2 to but I think you're going to want to angle on when it was announced, which is.
Peter Schrager
They'Re owing to just saying he homeward yesterday. That's nice. Did they win?
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, but he homeworked Lindor. Cost them the game.
Dave Rothenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Han and Rosenberg podcast.
