Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 880 ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers. Big 5 o'clock hour. We go with Don Legreca and Peter Rosenberg. I'm Alan Hahn. 800-919-3776. The number get in line and get get into the conversation with us. So as the Mets and Yankees are both playing right now, both teams still two nothing for both. Right. The Mets. Oh no. Four nothing met.
Joe
That's right. Nimmo with a big RBI double.
Don Legreca
Okay, there you go.
Joe
Blue Jays bullpen.
Don Legreca
Yeah, well that's again find the, find the weakness of the team. Right. The Yankees by the way, as you remember, IKF kind of fulfiller. Yeah. Love Connor booting the ball around the field. So the Yankees have two on in the top of the third here and the Martian played so they're up to nothing as well. So keep your we'll keep you updated on this stuff. You don't need to worry about that. But I have some news guys that, that I think we've been anticipating for a while and it's now it makes things kind of intriguing on many different levels. So if you didn't hear Jalen Brunson practiced today with the Knicks. The Knicks played in Cleveland, as you know, Thursday night and no Wednesday night. They have been in Atlanta the last, the last two days. So they have practice in Atlanta. They play the Hawks tomorrow afternoon. Don't ask me why, they just do. It's probably the NBA probably is being smart about avoiding any playing games against the final four. That's why you won't see a lot of NBA. I don't think you see any NBA games on Monday night because that's the championship night.
Joe
Right.
Don Legreca
So the games in the afternoon, Atlanta. But the Knicks have been sitting around in Atlanta for two days. But they are practicing and on the court today was Jalen Brunson. He participated fully in practice, came out of it okay. And so he's been upgraded to questionable for the game tomorrow. Now what does that mean? Does that mean he's going to play? Not going to play. Remember it's the first game of back to back. They play Sunday night against Phoenix. Would you think that he would probably because you're not going to go back to back right out of the gate. So I imagine the game you'd want to play him in is the home game. Of course. That makes sense.
Joe
Yes.
Don Legreca
So my guess is that's what you're going to see if he's this close to. He practiced, everything's fine. The players even were joking around. I think Josh Hart said he looked. He looked the same. He was getting buckets, he was giving up buckets. You know, just taking a shot at his defense. But you could probably term it imminent return. He's not the only one. Now remember, they were down to their fourth and fifth point guards. Deuce McBride is closer campaign also could end up playing even tomorrow as early as tomorrow. Mitchell Robinson, as we know, it's a back to back. So will we see him tomorrow or will we see him again on Sunday at home? I think there's a high probability that Sunday night at home against the Phoenix Suns, you might see the first time the entire roster available and now see if they can spend the last week of the regular season figuring it all out. 10 man, 9 to 10 man rotation that you can play now pretty confidently if you're Tom Thibodeau and that might be the team that. Now you start to say, what can this team do in the postseason? But this is basically it now. This is going to be what the team looks like finally healthy as we're getting into the last week of the season. Does this generate any optimism, I want to know from Knick Fans right now, 800-9193776 because the talk has been they're not good enough. This is it. Like the second round and out. Some people are even saying, I don't even think they're getting out of the first round. They're not getting much respect nationally anymore. Not like they were early in the season, but yet this is the first time we're going to see them all together, all healthy. And when I say healthy, I mean not working. A guy in like Mitchell Robinson now can play. He could give you 20 minutes. We saw what he can do. He's looking more like himself. They are a different team with him healthy. So does it change any. I'm not going to say expectations, but for either one of you, is there a little more intrigue now into what this team can look like with Brunson back out there healthy, with Mitchell Robinson healthy and in the rotation and going nine deep at the very least that you can do off your bench now?
Alan Hahn
Well, how would you. How would you be interested in this team and not have an extremely high level of interest on what they look like over the coming days? To me, the only question, Alan, is how much they allow Jalen to do and how involved is he going to be here over the next week? Because to your point, any conversation you've had about this team over, basically since the All Star break has been a. Well, when we get everyone together, first it was Mitch, then it was Jalen. So now we will finally know what this team can be. And that's why I said yesterday, guys, I really think it's important. And I think, fortunately, Brunson's the kind of guy who just generally wants to be on the floor. It's why I think it's really critically important he plays some real minutes over the next week. So they're not trying to find their first true groove in the first round of the playoffs. You mess around, get the wrong matchup, guys, you know, you could end up getting bounced while you're trying to figure things out. So I really hope. I think. I think it's incredibly important. If you're a Knicks fan, guys, I think you're more locked in, Don, right now than you've been in a very long time.
Joe
Well, because let's say they really, Joe, what do they got, six games left and I would be five?
Don Legreca
Like, think about it. Tomorrow is probably the one that they just throw away, right? Like, tomorrow's the one where you're not going to have Jalen out there. You probably don't have Robinson out there because you want them for the home game. And then you just do, you know, from Sunday to Sunday, finish the season, let's see what you got.
Joe
So five games, win them all. Dominate and tell me you're not going to feel good now, is it enough to say, all right, now let. Now let's go after the Celtics and the Cavs. The way we look now, can five games do that? I guess it depends on what those five games look like. I think one of them is against Boston, right?
Don Legreca
One's against Tuesday night, national TV against Boston Thursday or no, Friday night at the Garden against the Cavs, Right? So you have two shots at both of them before you get to the end of the regular season.
Joe
Now, let's not fool ourselves. It's not like those games could be incredibly meaningful for either the Celtics or the Cavs. Cavs will have clinched one, Celtics locked into two. So those games may not mean anything.
Don Legreca
But it will to the Knicks, don't you think? Mentally, don't you need to get over the hump?
Joe
I'll tell you this. They go out there and beat up on the Celtics and the Cabs, you can feel as good about it as you want. It's still all right. Those games didn't mean anything to Boston and Cleveland and look what happened earlier in the season when you were non competitive against them. So at least it could be debatable lose to them. That's a difficult thing to get up from, right?
Don Legreca
Yeah.
Joe
So, so how it looks matters but I think winning maybe it doesn't matter as much because the Cavs and bought and, and Celtics don't need it. But if you were to lose those games of those teams not needing it, that would probably be an issue. But no, to Peter's point, if you're invested in the Knicks, how are you not watching these last few games finally healthy? And is there enough they can do in those five games to change the narrative? I don't think so, but I guess it's possible if those five games look.
Don Legreca
Incredible, if it, if it looks like it did at times earlier this season. And again that's the impact offensively is the return of Brunson. The impact defensively is of course what, what Mitchell Robinson brought and how all the players keep talking about how different they feel when he's on the floor. They're a better defensive team because of what he brings to the center position. And as we all know it's. It's what. But car. Anthony Towns played the four in Minnesota. He had Rudy Gobert who's a four timer, three time defensive player of the year, big man and it just changes everything when you can have that aspect. And so they are going to look different and it's not really something they've looked like all season. Now one other thing though to point out and this I think is going to be the tricky part that you know, because we all, we all have our critical eye. I think there'll be a lot of people wondering, let's see. OGN and OBI's averaging over 22, 23 points a game since Brunson went out and he's playing like a, like a superstar. And you know, Mikhail Bridges up until the last game was also averaging over 20 a game and he was also looked like a guy that looked more engaged offensively and was contributing a lot. Towns would did his normal stuff the 25 and 13 that's he's been doing all season. So there was no change, no effect on him. But when Brunson comes Back now into this mix, does Bridges go back to being the guy that looks kind of disconnected, disillusioned, not really part of the offense? Does Anna Nobe get frustrated? Because, okay, I'm not getting the ball anymore or I'm not getting my opportunity to score. I can get to 20 every night if. If I. If I can. Like, I think for Brunson, it's going to be interesting not only to work his way back and get confident, you know, and play the minutes with the starters and look like Jalen Brunson again coming off that ankle.
Alan Hahn
Yep. But also everything.
Don Legreca
Making sure you don't disrupt what you like. Silver. You hate saying silver lining to an injury, but if the silver lining is that, that Anunoby and Bridges figured out their role in the offense, I know if you're Jalen Brunson, the last thing you want to do is disrupt that.
Alan Hahn
It's a great point because there are certain things that have been working and you don't want those things to step back while your superstar is now back at the forefront. It's a really good point. And that's exactly why the more time they get, the better. And you guys tell me, you look at the final few games, you're telling me if they were okay, Atlanta and Phoenix, whatever, let's just. Let's just hope they win those games. Guys, if they lose to Boston, Detroit and Cleveland, three out of their last four, that is a gigantic difference about how you feel about this team versus them winning two of those games. Like, wouldn't it be nice, Allen, you even down the stretch here. I don't even care whether the Celtics are have everything locked up. Don't you really? Wouldn't you love to get a win against Boston or Cleveland in the last.
Don Legreca
Week of the season? I hate to make it sound like the, you know, like it's imperative and must win. I do think there's a mental edge. Even if Boston's like, look, we're not going to play all our guys, who cares? I think Boston's still trying to chase one, though. I don't think it's completely out of the realm. Right. So you'd think these games do matter. Is it on national tv? But I'm with you. Like, I kind of feel like as a player, you're going to want to feel like. Like, because I think they left Cleveland, as you know, again, as bad as the second half was, they were 1 for 15 from three. They lost 71, 45 in the second half of that game. They were with three minutes to go up, up 13. They had a 15 point lead on that team in on the road without their star player. Like there, there was a part of them that walked out of that building saying we competed with them though and we weren't even at our best. That that gave them a little feather. But I do think you gotta have the confidence of okay, we can beat them because oh, and six is 06.
Joe
That we can do it. But again, doing it four times in a seven game span is a whole nother story.
Alan Hahn
But still you certainly believe it more. Don, if you could win one.
Joe
Well, hey, and what I'm intrigued by is how do the Celtics and Cavs handle it?
Alan Hahn
By the way, Alan, they'll both be done. It's the Celtics are five out right now at six to play. It should be wrapped by that.
Joe
So let's say you're locked in Peter, and you're the Celtics. Do you say let's play hard, let's beat them again, let's really hurt their confidence?
Alan Hahn
No, you probably say let's show them.
Joe
Or do you say, you know what, we're not going to play anybody. So even if you beat us, we got the excuse we didn't play. We're not even going to give you the opportunity to gain that confidence. That's probably the way the Celtics and the Cavs are going to play it. So the Knicks can do with it whatever they want. Hey, we won the game, we got some confidence. But if you're playing a bunch of like, like D league guys or G league guys, really, what can you honestly get from it? Would get what? I guess whatever you want from it. But is it really going to mean anything if you go out there and beat a bunch of bench guys?
Don Legreca
No, it's not. Again, if Luke Cornett and Peyton Pritchard are starting and yeah, it's not gonna, it's not gonna hit the same. But I also wonder this too because.
Joe
You know, God forbid, lose the game, then forget it.
Don Legreca
No, but there is also something to be said about don't show them everything because you really don't want to put too much stuff on film here. So if you, if you have this idea of, okay, if we get to the second round, we got a lineup that we're going to throw out that we think is going to match up well against Boston. Like we might, like you might be sitting there saying to yourself, we got this lineup that we're going to put against Boston that includes Robinson as a starting five, Towns at the four because they're, that's the one area the Knicks really struggle is that Boston just was bigger than them everywhere. So instead now Adenobi goes to the three and he's checking Tatum because, you know, like he can handle Tatum, like he. Adonoby's defense, one on one is phenomenal. So if you move him there and you don't have a Josh Hart on the floor that they could say Porzingis, go, go guard Josh Hart. Because you know Josh Hart's not a threat unless he's cutting, slashing, you know, running fast, break. We know he's not a one on one player. Like he knows it too, if you change that element. And now they got a mud. You got a much different looking lineup out there. How much do you want them to see that? But you also want to kind of see yourself, don't you? To see all. How does this look? So it's a very strange thing, but that's what makes it so that's what makes these games interesting. What, what are they willing to show that they want to use if they ever. If they do get to that second round matchup?
Joe
So when you throw all that in, the game's not meaningful for the Celtics and the Cavs, you're not wanting to show your hand. Really, all I think you can gain from it is how does Brunson and Robinson look?
Don Legreca
They look good.
Joe
Does Brunson still have everything going? Does he then, then that's, that's where I think you forget about the final score and all that. How do the injured players look and then just go from there. I think that that's going to be more important. Like, wouldn't it be more important, say that they lose the game but Brunson goes. Brunson scores 50 but they lose the game or the Knicks win the game, but Brunson looks awful. Like you'd rather just have Brunson and Mitch playing in these games, playing well and the outcomes are meaningless at this point.
Don Legreca
Yeah, I don't know. But I think probably if you're a fan, what you want, if you're the Knicks, if you're the organization, you want to get out of the week saying to yourself that all right, the captain looks like himself. The confidence is, you know, because his footwork's everything for him. And with the ankle injury, you want to make sure that he could still do all the things that he normally can do to keep defenders off balance, that, you know that with Brunson on the floor, Anunoby is still attacking aggressive, he could still get his buckets. He's still getting a free throw line. All the stuff that he was doing, he's still doing okay. That's good to see too, that the defense, you know, is still like, they're. They're coming around. It just has to come together. That's all you're looking for at this point is just make sure that this is finally everything you've been waiting for from the start of this season to this point is they were waiting to see what they can be when everybody is available and healthy. And this final week of the season is what you have is that opportunity to do that. So that's where we're at. And I know it's. I know what you're thinking, Peter, because I can hear it. Just get to the playoffs. Can we just get to the playoffs? Need to, right? Because it does feel like we're talking in circles now, waiting for things, but things that won't matter until there's a playoff series to be in and see what it looks like. But we're only. We're literally one week away.
Alan Hahn
I literally had that conversation earlier today. Some was, you know, I'm here at doing evolve tapings for wwe and someone's like, oh, you know, what are you guys talking about up there? And I said, you know, we've kind of gotten to that spot where like, you know, we're talking about the. The Torpedo bats.
Joe
Sure.
Alan Hahn
It's really a nothing burger, you know, draft stuff. A draft stuff which again, there's some meat to the bone, but sometimes we're just scratching. And what you're really waiting for is let's. Let's get these playoffs started and see what we have. Is this Knicks team capable of truly competing? Are they what they were on paper at the start of the year? A team that really competed in the playoffs last year came up short and then added this year and I believe added. And again, will they feel another thing we haven't even talked about. How much will they feel the lack of physical that Julius Randle brought to this team in the playoffs last year.
Don Legreca
And Hardenstein and Josh Hardensteinzo.
Alan Hahn
That's. That's three pieces, Allen, that were all on the tough side that are now all gone. How does that affect them? So there's a. There's just so many questions to be answered and I would. It would be so fun for this city if they gel well when Brunson starts playing and all of a sudden guys, you could. You could believe they could do something.
Don Legreca
And they would take over. I really like if they start to show whoever they play in the first round again, whether it's Detroit, whether it's Indiana, whether it's the bucks, because all three are your opponents options right now in the 3, 6 matchup. They're still very, that's going to go down to the wire which is also going to be interesting to watch, right how who's doing what, who's going to finish sixth is also something that you're going to watch. But that, that's, that's all you're. If they all of a sudden go into a first round series and you start to see that team that we saw, you know, that was fun to watch in December when everybody was believing like, well this team's legit look, this offense is one of the best we've seen. Remember I had that bold statement in January that this is the best team, the best team as far as talent goes that we've seen since 73. Like all that stuff can still come back. It's not like it all went away, but they've had these injuries, they've gone through schedule stuff, all that stuff. They get a week off to reset and start the playoffs. I think with, even with the Yankees and Mets underway, this would be the biggest story in New York and everybody would then be talking about it is what this team can be. I still feel like they're a transaction, transaction cycle away from being, you know, a contender. And what that transaction is going to be will be the talk of the whole off season. But it's still curious to see what they can be this year.
Joe
I hate the style points thing, but not even, not even so much style points. It's just you don't want to have to go to war in the first round and have, and you want to be able to go into that second round against Boston in full effect and not you just went seven with Detroit, two games went into overtime, a couple of guys are banged up and then. And you're not at your best, you're going to see people pumped. If they make short work of whoever they face in the first round, if they sweep, maybe Boston goes five or six in their round for whatever reason. As Peter likes to say, they play with their food a little bit, go up 30 but then lose a couple of games or something like that, you're going to start to see people getting really pumped. But if they, they stumble into that Boston sweeps there, it might not feel the same. But I think this city will be captivated. If they were to say sweep the Pistons in the first round, I think they'd Be all fired up for Boston.
Don Legreca
I'll tell you what, if you're Boston too, right. As a 2 seed, the game that, the matchup for me, that would be interesting. And if you're a Knicks fan, again, this is what you're rooting for. Because you, if you got to go through a knockdown, drag out with a, with a young, physical team like the Pistons, I would. Peter, I know you're a Celtics fan, so just. I'd be a little worried about the potential of the Orlando Magic, who are right now sitting in the seventh seed if they win that. And I think they would beat the hawks in the 7, 8 matchup to get that seventh seat. A Celtics Magic playoff series in the first round would not be easy. Orlando was hurt most of the year. That's why they're under.500. But if you remember how they started the season, they were tough. They were really good. Bonkerra had a 50 point game. He's like a budding superstar. Tough, strong. They've got Franz Wagner. They have got a tough, nasty team with a coach who coaches that way. They could also take a piece out of Boston as well. And if you're a Knicksman, that's exactly what you're rooting for.
Joe
Weren't they talking up Orlando in the beginning of the season?
Don Legreca
Yeah. Oh, yeah. No, no, that was. They. I mean, again, their coach is a great guy. No, Jamal Mosley, really. Well, they, they were expected to be good if they had all kinds of crazy injuries, but by again, the Bonchero injury, the Wagner injury, you know, with weird like sports hernia type things. Strange. But they're back now and they're healthy and they are, They're. They're a handful. You should see the way they're playing right now.
Joe
Yep. So it's.
Alan Hahn
But don't forget that. And don't forget this part though. Listen, as you're scaring me a little about Orlando, let's not forget Knicks end up getting Detroit.
Don Legreca
Oh, no, I'm.
Alan Hahn
It's about. It's about as unsexy a matchup as you could get with a lower seed in the playoffs. It's the team that. No, they are literally. The Pistons have literally become that team that no one feels like seeing in the playoffs.
Don Legreca
No way. You do not want to play them. No.
Alan Hahn
In fact, that could be. They're going to test the physical. You talk about a series where you're miss. You'll miss the guys you had. This would be a real series to test the Knicks.
Don Legreca
That's what makes that Series dangerous. You'll come out. If you come out of it without, like, looking like you just dominated a young team. But if you come out of it and they, like, kind of manhandled you and God forbid you lose that series, the noise and the pressure. Oh, my God. It'll be ramped up because that's all anybody, you know. It's New York. Wait, we got out toughed. Oh, that's not acceptable like that. That would be devastating on many levels for the franchise. So we'll see. But like I said, if you get out of it and you're a little limped because of how hard they play, I just want the Celtics limping, too. Oh, yeah. I probably could have phrased that better, but, you know, Orlando against Boston would be the series that you'd say, okay, let's see if Orlando can also take a piece out of Boston as well. All stuff to watch.
Joe
April is going to be packed with stuff, man. Busy Knicks draft, early baseball, you know, maybe if the Rangers can sneak in.
Don Legreca
Yep.
Joe
Get at least two of the three locals in the postseason. Yeah, it's going to be hopping, man.
Alan Hahn
You hear the company, man. Donna's including the draft when you know he cares with you.
Don Legreca
Well, but the NFL draft, massive.
Joe
I'm honestly as hyped as we are for all of these things. I could have just said the draft and April would be popping. For some people, the draft is going to wipe the floor with anything it faces. It's going to be like a machine. I mean, ratings wise and the table.
Alan Hahn
Ratings wise, of course. I mean, I am not a. I.
Joe
Am not a draft guy, but I'm not either. Like, I don't like the whole idea of, like, sitting there watching the draft over important playoff games when I can look at the computer and see who was selected but not the unknown of to not really know right now who the Giants are taking at three and who the jets are taking at seven. Is. Is a talking point.
Don Legreca
Yeah, it is.
Joe
People are going to care. But I'm with you.
Don Legreca
The.
Joe
The whole, like, sitting there watching, and.
Alan Hahn
I'm going out for a party. A draft party. I mean, do you remember, Don, when I ranted and raved about how big Nashville was for the draft? And I thought it was, like, the biggest collection of losers ever created in America. I'm good. I'm so good.
Don Legreca
That's NFL Con. It really. No, it is. They. People. People dress up for it. Yeah. That's NFL Con. That's all.
Alan Hahn
I'm good. I'm so. And especially this year I don't even know where we're drafting.
Don Legreca
Oh, your team?
Alan Hahn
Yeah, 27.
Don Legreca
I don't know if there's ever a draft to go. It'd be in Green Bay because it's probably the only time you'll see grass like instead. And not at Lambeau, but anywhere else because usually everything's covered in snow and ice.
Joe
You can set Green Bay on fire, it still wouldn't be lit.
Don Legreca
Wow. Okay. 809-3776 is there's an NBA story that is not involving the Knicks or the Nets or anything local, but it is an NBA story that is worth talking about only because it is something that has been a problem with this league. As far as who's next. Last night we saw the, the warriors and the Lakers and we saw LeBron and Curry just have an absolute battle shot for shot down the stretch. It was a phenomenal game, phenomenal ending and a potential first round series. So why is somebody 40 and 37 still carrying the league? Because of players like John Morant who don't get it. If you haven't heard about this story out of Memphis, you don't want to stay tuned and listen because this is why a lot of people are frustrated with the future, or at least the presented future of the NBA and are also concerned. So we'll get to that coming up. We have calls at 800 now. A9 3776. But first, it is Alan Hahn here. I want to tell you about my friends at Bath Fitter. So they're going to remodel a bath in my home. The final four is tomorrow, everybody. So it starts with Florida, Auburn, 6:09 tip off and right after that you'll get the second half of the final four which is Houston and Duke, Cooper Flag and them boys and Cooper Flag trying to do something like again. Carmelo Anthony is going to be inducted into hall of Fame and part of the reason why he's a first ballot is because as a freshman he led Syracuse to a national championship. Cooper Flag can do the very same thing this year and then be the number one pick in the draft. That was your tournament update. It was brought to you by Amazon Pickup. Amazon Pickup is a convenient and secure way to collect your Amazon packages from locations near you. Again, 800 now and 93776. The Yankees now with a 51 lead in the top of the fourth and they're still two on. They still, still trying to get some more here. The Pirates are a mess by the way. They have good players, but their fans are already chanting sell the team. They've got like Giants fans can relate to this plane flew by with a sell the team banner as well. Gorgeous stadium, great sports town, poorly run, cheap baseball team and that. That market deserves more, no question.
Joe
And that stadium deserves better.
Don Legreca
Oh, that stadium's phenomenal. It's one of the best ones, wouldn't you say? In the lead in the league.
Joe
I mean, I haven't been to them all, but I've been to a lot. I think I told you the story. There's a couple of years ago, late in the season, Rangers were in Pittsburgh. So it was April, they had a Saturday night game. So the hotel was right by the ballpark. You look out the window and they were playing and bought tickets like 12 rows behind home plate for like 35 bucks. Out there watch six innings of Pirates, Reds. I mean it wasn't even that it was interesting or compelling baseball, but the ballpark is just breathtaking. It was just so cool to be there.
Don Legreca
Yeah, but it's been a while.
Joe
They had that little, little run with, you know, those wild card appearances, but just could, just can't. It's been a long time, man.
Don Legreca
Too long.
Joe
Yeah, it's really just a shame what's happening.
Don Legreca
How. I mean not to go too deep on this but like how is it that the Steelers are just so well run Penguins, you know, again, well run. They've been always competitive, always good. And then you have this and they have the best pitcher in the sport. They have good players but it just, you know, schools are going to be somewhere soon. Right. Like he's going to be. I mean, I didn't mean school skins. He's going to be somewhere in.
Joe
Well, that's the problem that you become just a minor league for the bigger market teams and.
Don Legreca
Right.
Joe
And that's why I've always argued if football, basketball and hockey can have a salary cap and certainly in football and basketball still have the high end players make obnoxious money. 50, 60 million dollars. Explain to me how baseball can't figure it out. I know they have a strong union, but now, you know, you've got players making more money than like the Marlins payroll. If you have a salary cap, you'd have a floor. There'd be a. There'd be a minimum. Teams would have to. Or that they'd have to pay out. So that would help a lot of the players be able to earn money because it would give them other options of places to sign for teams that needed to get to that floor of the salary cap. And the big high end players can still get theirs. How is. And I just don't get.
Don Legreca
It's the principle.
Joe
They don't see it.
Don Legreca
Yeah. And you'll have to lose a year of the sport to get it. You know, and I don't think anybody's willing to do that. So, you know, it's a shame because you're right. But it's not going to happen. The Mets are up five nothing, bottom of the eighth. So the home opener going well at Citi Field. So that's good. And you know, we'll keep you certainly.
Alan Hahn
A good time too. This it looks like. I mean, listen, I know.
Don Legreca
How could it not be? It's five nothing. I mean this is exactly a home run. Yeah. You know, Soto comes through as well. This is great.
Alan Hahn
It. Listen, absolutely. The game has gone the way you want it and everyone's always up for a home opener. But Don, you know what I'm saying, It feels like there's a little extra zhuzh there. Yeah, there's zhush.
Don Legreca
Don, you feeling zhush?
Joe
Well, yep, but you always feel on an opening day.
Alan Hahn
But it just looked different. The, the home run reaction to Alonzo looked more playoff than opening day. It was, it was raucous in there.
Don Legreca
Talk about a welcome back. If he didn't get the biggest cheers. Considering how the Met fan felt about him at the end of last season and felt about him when the news got out that the Mets were going to move on from him. I mean it didn't Stearns actually say that publicly at one time? Like, that they're. They're moving on.
Joe
Yeah.
Don Legreca
And then they had to back. They had to backtrack and bring him in. So for like, this is like Wilmer Flores all over again. Right. Like, except better. You know, Flores was crying out there, and fans fell in love with Will Flores. But this is different. This is like, this is our guy. We wanted him. We booed the owner and almost like bullied him into bringing him back. And now he's back, and on opening day, how does he thank us for our support? He hits a home run right out of the gate.
Joe
Yeah, listen, you got Soto, we got Lindor coming off a great postseason. Alonso coming off a great postseason. Vientos came off a great postseason, although he's really, really struggled in the early going. I mean, they gave me such a miracle run. You finally have an owner that is going to, you know, go double and triple down to make sure that they team stays relevant. It's, you know, there's a lot of excitement, but, you know, to Alan's point, opening day, there's always going to be judge on opening day, but. And then we'll see what happens tomorrow night when it's cold and it's raining, if the same energy exists. But I have a feeling City Field is going to be pretty electrical here. If they play well and they've got this kind of star power, it's going to be fun. I did get a tweet. I wanted it. Since we're on this. Yep, I did get a tweet. I wanted to read it on the air rather than to respond to the individual.
Don Legreca
The rivalry stuff.
Joe
Yeah. Napalm kicks.
Don Legreca
Yep.
Joe
So says Alan Hahn. There is no real all in capital letters rivalry. Don Don legreca is dead wrong that Soto leaving bothers us. It's not him leaving. It's the Met fans thinking they are it and being obnoxious about it. That bothers us. Met still Little bro. One player leaving. Even Soto won't change that. I want to thank you, Napalm, for actually making my point. Because I. The Mets are living in your head. Because if they're little bro and it doesn't bother you, why would you even respond to Alan's tweet? Right. I mean, and it's not even really. I'm not talking about not being little brother anymore. That's not even what I brought up. I just brought up the fact that I think a lot of Yankee fans are, in a way that he went to the Mets. But Napalm you're making my point that about. Because if they're little brother and they don't matter, then why are you even responding to the. Why the obnoxious Met fans. Well, how do you. How should the Met fan feel about going out and getting one of the best players in the sport not excited? Should they sit there and go, well, you're. We're still not the Yankees, so it's nice to have him. But I better be quiet of the. Or big brother's gonna smack me around.
Don Legreca
They want. They want Mexicans to be Canadian. Just very polite and like, oh, that's nice. Oh, don't want to upset you, though. Don't care too much.
Joe
Obnoxious means that it bothers you. So for you to say that leaving quote, unquote, bothers us. Napalm, you made my point. Thank you. And you articulated it way better than I could. So I know that you wanted to respond to me like you got. You know, you. You actually made my. But you voted for me.
Alan Hahn
That's. Don't you love when that happens?
Joe
And we. And I. And I and Napalm. Thank you very much, by the way. By the way, service to me.
Alan Hahn
This. This happened to me.
Don Legreca
I had.
Alan Hahn
Guys, I had an awkward moment on. On First Take. I forgot to tell you guys about this yesterday. Oh, well, I got into a. I got into an argument with Kendrick Perkins.
Joe
Oh, no.
Alan Hahn
About the Lakers. And I messed up because I got into an argument that was much more of a sports talk radio argument like Don and I would get into. That was semantics based. And that's not really how First Take operates. Essentially. What happened, Don, tell me if you relate to this. Kendrick Perkins put up a tweet the night before saying, the most important Laker is Austin Reaves. Okay. And I said. I started the segment with a hot line. I said, as a wise man you may know of once said, stay off the weed. Right?
Joe
Right.
Alan Hahn
And I said, you. I said that was a very cute thing to say on Twitter. But Luka Doncic is the most important Laker. That's the only thing to be said.
Don Legreca
I disagree. LeBron James, that's fine too, by the.
Alan Hahn
Way, Allen, now you and I can have an argument about LeBron vs. Luka.
Don Legreca
Right?
Alan Hahn
The point. The point. Kendrick and the point. And Kendrick, as he's arguing with me and thinking he's winning the argument was proving my point. He just kept repeatedly saying how because of who LeBron and Luca are, the extra piece that they need is Austin Reeves. He is what the Celtics got from Jrue Holiday or Kristaps Porzingis. Yeah, basically. You're repeatedly telling me he's the important third piece they need to go over.
Don Legreca
The top after them.
Alan Hahn
After that.
Don Legreca
Let me explain this perk and other former players are big on explaining this thing that they call, quote, unquote, the others. The others is I always joke about the original Gilligan's island theme when they didn't name the professor.
Alan Hahn
Don't get started.
Don Legreca
And the rest. Right, because you weren't good enough to have your name in the credits, but you're just the rest. So instead of the rest, it's the others. So you have the two stars and then it's the others and then boys. And them boys. Right. And what we've learned in the playoffs in the NBA is. And them boys are probably the reason why you win these champions for sure. But they're not the first reason.
Alan Hahn
Correct.
Don Legreca
It's just our. And them boys are better than your Endem boys.
Alan Hahn
Correct.
Don Legreca
And that's what Austin Reaves is the first pick piece of. And them boys know it starts with Luca and LeBron, but who is that third or fourth piece that you're like, yo, this guy had a series and helped us win it.
Alan Hahn
And by. So, so I tried to say to him, hey, how about this? Let's agree on that. If the Lakers do something big in the playoffs, it will be because Austin Reeves did special things for them. I can give you that. Yeah, but what. But you're, but you're missing the fact that what I'm arguing with is the fact that you said it wrong. And they, like when you're arguing with ex athletes, they won't, they don't understand. They don't want to give you the semantic credit, but sometimes that's what the argument is. Yeah, it's, it's not that he's the most important player. I'm sorry, he's the most important player not named LeBron James or Luka Doncic.
Don Legreca
Right.
Alan Hahn
Anyways, I learned a lesson.
Don Legreca
They can't get past that. That's what happens. It's, it's, it's almost like you. It's accepted that it's the two stars. It's the rest of it, that they'll say, well, that's the reason why. Because these two guys are always there. They're, they're, they're the, the givens. But anyways, yeah, that does happen. But we're going to get into. Speaking of stars, coming up next, the John Moran situation in Memphis, which for many people who always say I don't watch the NBA anymore. I don't like the NBA or the NBA slipping. Here's another example of a young star who doesn't get it and is contributing to that narrative. We will explain, but first, Peter, a message.

So Yankees putting up what, nine runs last night? Seven so far today. So the offense kicking in. That's good to see. The Mets, meanwhile, that game is flying. They're in the top of the ninth now. There is one out. I'm sorry, Two outs, updated. So they're pretty much almost done. Five nothing for the Mets. Good home opener for them. In the meantime in the NBA, there's a story happening that I just felt like we should talk about. It involves John Morant, who's been through like he was a guy that felt like, boy, this guy could be one of the superstars of the future. Huge following, a fun player to watch. He's in Memphis. Grizzlies had a pretty good team a couple of years ago where they were just, you know, you felt like this was a guy that was on the rise. Number two pick in the draft. He and Zion were the top picks. And he got into some issues. As you remember, there was one club incident. There was a picture of him passed out drunk on a road trip. I think it was Denver. And he's in a strip club and he's just passed out on a couch with cash on the floor, guns around him. Like it was very strange thing. So they already, the league already kind of like talked to him about that. Like this is not a good look. Then right after that conversation, he's in a Instagram live video with a buddy of his in a car. And what are they doing flashing guns right after they talked to him. Then there was also this report that in the summer doing some pickup basketball, playing against like some kid, like a 17 year old, they got into an argument, he went in his house, got a gun, came out and threatened the kid.
Alan Hahn
I remember.
Don Legreca
So there's all that going on, right? So now, which we are seeing around the league, he everybody does this weird gesture. We know in the NFL they're banning all kinds of gestures, but after making like a three, some guys will sort of, you know, do some kind of finger pointing. Then it becomes finger guns. And in some it's very obvious what they're doing is it's shooting. And Morant has been doing it. So he and buddy heel did it in a game earlier this week when Memphis played Golden State, pointing at each other. And it was more in fun. But again, when you, John Morant, you have that in your history, it's not great. So as Shamsherania was will say here, Morant was fined for it. And then the league Called him to talk to him about his actions. So listen to Shams here.
E
On Thursday, the league came out, they warned Ja Morant, they warned also Buddy Hill. They warned the Grizzlies, they warned the warriors as well, like knock it off with the gun gestures. But of course, a lot of the messaging was around John Morant. He had the one right there that was a lot more blatant, a lot more forward than Buddy Healds was. And we know the context with John Morant. Clearly the league is watching it. The sentiment around John Morant is like he's been doing these gestures really all year, possibly in games that are not seen as much as the ones we saw national TV yesterday, the game against the Warriors. Every warriors game is big. So the league, league officials, they spoke to John Morant, they spoke to Buddy, they spoke to everyone with the Grizzlies, everyone with the warriors over the last 48 hours and basically said, don' do it again. It's inappropriate. And refrain from doing it. And then John Morant, hours later goes out and does it four minutes into the game. The word that I'm getting today is that I think there's an understanding here. And you know, I think there would be some surprise if he does this again.
Don Legreca
Okay, now boys, four minutes into the game, after the league already reached out to you and said, listen, this is a bad look, stop doing it four minutes into the game. You're going to. What was that? Muscle memory? Or was that defiance? Is he a rebel without a clue? Because this is a guy that already his, his reputation has been tarnished. And then after the game, by the way, adding, adding to the just the ignorance is he starts saying, oh, I don't care. People are going to say things about me now and I don't care anymore. Like, like him acting like he's the victim in all this. No matter what I do, people are going to be critical of me. But you built this house like you're in it now. How does he. How could he possibly think that I'm just going to keep doing this and feel like that people are going to love me because I'm the rebel. He's. It's not thrown his career away because he's a great player and that's not going to change anything. But the league is desperate for a new generation of star players and he was supposed to be one of them. And these are the actions guys that I feel like pushes some fans who are maybe not die hard, they love basketball, but they're more of like again, the bigger Audience that everybody's trying to draw in, and they just get turned off by the league because of this stuff. It's complete ignorance.
Alan Hahn
So I'm not sure. That's almost a separate conversation. I don't know how much. I agree if that. It turns fans off.
Don Legreca
Oh, it does. You could see it. The reaction to this.
Alan Hahn
Listen, it turns me off. Relative to the idea of him being a marquee guy. I'll say that. Like, you're just not going to be. I mean, if you really look around at the people, you know, who can stand the test of time, they basically have to live a pretty pristine life in order to do that, particularly in this era of social media. Right. Like, you know, LeBron's biggest controversy will be people just don't like something that he says on an issue. The guy doesn't get in trouble. That's. That's never been a thing, right. I mean, you know, except riding on an awkward boat with his friends. Right?
Don Legreca
Like, there's no right.
Alan Hahn
There's no actual controversy. So to me, it's just very disappointing. You know, Anthony Edwards has his own personal life, stuff that isn't related to stuff like this, but still makes him maybe not the picturesque character you're looking for.
Don Legreca
What really Zions had, hell, his issues, like all these young guys that everybody's waiting to say, take over, you know, Luka is another great example. He's a guy that got traded because your franchise doesn't believe in you.
Alan Hahn
Well, yeah, Luka, again, Luca hasn't done anything bad, but people worry. Drinks too much and he eats too much, and he's not disciplined. Doesn't stay in shape. To me, what really drove me over the top on this John Moran thing is the fact that they had just talked to him. Now, if this. Hear me out, Don. If this had been the. And we were very tough on John Morant when the subject first came up a couple years ago, if this had been the first thing that had happened since all the controversy followed by the injury, this was the first thing. There was no previous conversation. And in a heated moment in a game, he did something dumb. I'd give him slack. Mistakes happen, but that's not this. They told him it should have been top of mind. They were trying to look out for. For him in his brand, and he blatantly showed them up. It's like, is this guy hopeless? What are you doing?
Joe
When the story first broke, I was just taking a look, and I wanted to see what kind of support he was getting on social media, which he Got a ton because they feel as a double standard, one of the first things that I saw was pictures of other star players doing the same thing. So why is he being singled out? Well, there's two reasons why he's being singled out. Number one is cuz he's got a history of maybe not gun violence or breaking the law per se, but getting into gun controversy, glorifying the gun culture.
Don Legreca
Glorifying.
Joe
Glorifying the whole gun thing. And to me, this goes beyond the conversation of gun control because I'm sure there are people, especially in Tennessee, that are big gun advocates that still don't go for the Instagram posts of showing off with the guns and all that. That's not the culture that you're like selling to. The people that support owning guns don't automatically support that kind of behavior. Maybe some do, but I don't think overall that culture is going to fly to people like that number one. So it's tone deaf in that sense that maybe a player that's got a pristine record does it. All right, maybe you let it slide. It's not great, but you know, you let it slide. He's got that history that makes it look bad. And also they are desperately trying to make this guy the face of the league. They want a post LeBron, Steph Curry, NBA to be about Ja Morant. And it's not going to happen if he continues to conduct himself this way. The league is doing him a favor. They're not picking on him. They're saying, dude, do you want to be the face of this league? Then stop doing this. Don't get involved in this. You've got the talent, you've got the chance here, post LeBron and Curry to become the face of the NBA. And you're doing damage to your reputation. You're doing damage to that. So we're trying to do you a favor, man. Wake up. Don't be like this. So he feels like the typical kid getting picked on, but what they're doing is they're trying to wake him up to the money and the fame and the exposure that he's probably ruining by doing something like this.
Don Legreca
It's an Allen Iverson story all over again. I'll quickly tell this story because this was early on when I was covering the league is Iverson. There was an out rap album he was going to make and he had this one song and David Stern was concerned because it was. It had a lot of misogyny and a lot of the things that again for the NBA, like, well, we can't have an NBA player doing this. So he brought. He went and visited. He met with David Stern, and Stern took the. The lyrics and read them to Allen Iverson. And Iverson, later on tells a story about how at the moment, he was, like, giggling. He was trying because he knew it was serious, because, I mean, the commissioner comes to see you. That's a serious thing. So he was kind of chuckling to himself because it sounded so bizarre. He said, it ended up being embarrassing to me because I'm hearing these lyrics and I'm saying, yeah, it's weird coming from him. And all David Stern was telling him was, listen, you know, you can have. You do what you want. You want to sing songs, right? But just understand, wherever you go, you still represent our league. You represent us, and we can't have this. And Iverson said years later, he realized what a huge mistake he was making back then, doing the things that he was doing to try to be rebellious and to feed into some people that love the rebel, the anti establishment, go against the man and all that stuff, right? And how it cost him in his career, things that he probably could have had. Iverson's still a beloved player. There's no question about it. But he said years later, sometimes you listen to people who tell you what you want to hear instead of the people that tell you what you need to hear. And that is, I think, exactly what's going on with John Morant right now. Unfortunately, he got fined $75,000. That doesn't mean a thing to him and the money he makes. But it's just a story to watch going forward, because again, with this league, it's. It's LeBron and Steph Curry, the old men, the Expendables, still carrying this league because the next generation as the Zions and the. And the Jaws and different players, they can't figure it out. Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. I don't want to know how the sausage is made, man. I just want to know. It's good.
