This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. That sounds like heaven to me. Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 880 ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers. Listen. Shorts are fun. The oversized car goes on a grown man. Grown men mature. Like if you're a dad. God forbid, a grandfather. Just come on. How about the dudes should be evolving.
Ty Butler
As men who work out in the gym in jeans. Those.
Peter Rosenberg
That's the he's not working out. Whoever's at the gym wearing jeans. Isn't it? He's not working out. He's there.
Ty Butler
They're doing pull ups.
Peter Rosenberg
They're doing pull ups. They're lifting weights.
Ty Butler
I don't understand it. So what does that say? I don't want to draw any conclusions.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not legs day. That's what it says.
Ty Butler
No, but there is. There is to me. I don't want to offend anybody, so I'm not going to say it. But if you're working out in jeans, there is a certain perception about you.
Bart Scott
Oh.
Ty Butler
About where you just came from. Oh, I already know.
Peter Rosenberg
Can fill me in or am I going to be left out of this conversation?
Ty Butler
That working out started up top.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. You went upstate to the clink clink.
Ty Butler
And you're upstate.
Peter Rosenberg
I get it. You're used to wearing denim in the gym. Is that what you're telling me? Understood? Yeah.
Ty Butler
That's the perception.
Peter Rosenberg
Understood. Ty Butler in with us here. It's Don Hahn and Rosenberg. Don't be back tomorrow. And we have again it calls at 800-919-3776 several to get to and we certainly will. We've been talking a lot of Yankees in the first two hours. We'll get back into the Yankee conversation as they play game two against the Rays tonight. The Mets in San Diego against the Padres. Not quickly on the Mets before we get into the football. Just quickly. It was an entertaining game. It was not a good start for Montas. I think they. I think. Well, Mendoza was gone in the third inning for arguing balls and strikes which he had every right to argue on. Soto, which that will be gone once of course the ABS system now comes into play. Cause it's just ridiculous. Some of the balls and strikes issues that you have that'll be cleaned up. But it wasn't a terrible game for the Mets. It was not a good Brazabon game. It was not a good Montas game. And in the end they ended up losing on a walk off to a really good Padres team. So it's, you know, the Mets of the streak is over, but they're still, I think they're still playing good baseball.
Ty Butler
They had one seven straight. I'm not going to get, you know, too up in arms about that game last night. They're in the midst of a tough schedule. But you know, the Phillies losing last night as well, they get a bone there.
Peter Rosenberg
Yep.
Ty Butler
I'm starting to. And maybe this is prisoner of the moment, but it's a, I'm a vibes guy.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Ty Butler
Starting to feel like, you know what Mets could win. The National League Dodgers are a mess right now.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't think it's outrageous to say that like Don has been trying to convince me all year that the National League is a tougher road. And there's, there's just so many good team. Padres, for example. The Padres almost took the Dodgers out last year. We all forget that.
Ty Butler
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
But like that's a good team. I know the Dodgers will look at. The Dodgers are loaded. The Phillies are good.
Ty Butler
But the Giants and the pot.
Peter Rosenberg
These Giants, yeah. Everybody has flaws. The Giants certainly do. But the Cubs are the other stories. Are they going to have that vibe going?
Ty Butler
And the brewers, of course I don't trust them. Don't trust the brewers paper champs.
Peter Rosenberg
I look at the Mets as you do. I look at the Mets as a team that I feel like, you know how I said about the Yankees, it just doesn't look right. I've watched the Mets enough to say it's there. There's a few tweaks that Stearns has to make. Bullpen is obviously one. They, they maxed out the bullpen to start the season because of all the injuries to starting pitching. They have got to rehabilitate that, that bullpen. They will, there's plenty of moves to be made and they will find themselves an outfielder, Harrison Bader, somebody like that. Just to, just to. Just to get some, get a bat in the outfield when you need one. But for the most part, Mauricio had another terrific game. What a big, big home run that was. What a big moment that was.
Ty Butler
The grand stem. I know you're not.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm Not a big Vientos guy, but I was always by the way, walking. Who was it he walked in front of? It was McNeil. Right. They intentionally walked McNeil to get the Vientos and Vientos didn't makes him pay. Like that's that, that those are all good moments. So I'm with you. I don't think it's outrageous to say like if you were to ask me one of the New York teams is going to go on a run, not both. Which one do you pick? The Mets. And I don't think, I don't think I'm saying that with any kind of spite towards my own team because I'm frustrated with them. I'm saying it because the Mets look.
Ty Butler
Like, well, yeah, one, one is coming off of a seven game win streak, the other is like since June 13th. Okay, so recency bias put teams in baseball.
Peter Rosenberg
I think I also trust Stearns. At the trade deadline he showed me something last year.
Ty Butler
I have been saying this for weeks. They have to win that division.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Ty Butler
They're a wild card team. I agree the path is too arduous for them to, you know, be able to get to the. I agree to the World Series just because for all those teams we talked about, like you can say everyone, every one of them have flaws. The Mets, that rotation, if they don't get another arm, you're still going to be worried about that bullpen being tacked.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes, but I think they're going to get arms. They will.
Ty Butler
And if you're playing the wild card, it's three straight days. So how do you, if you're Mendoza.
Peter Rosenberg
That'S what they lived through last year.
Ty Butler
Yeah, but how do you, if you're Mendoza, dealing with the bullpen issues you have now work around having to play three straight games.
Peter Rosenberg
No, you can't.
Ty Butler
It's clear with your season on the line.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, no, it's, it's clear that if you're, you can, you know, and you've all the rumors tell you, all the, all the reporting tells you the Mets are in on as many relievers as they can get their hands on and they're going to, you know, they're going to make moves. I just, from last year and watching what Stearns did, I kind of have a trust in him that I see. Let's see if he proves me right. Makes a couple of pickups. That helps that, that bullpen. And then of course, you know, mania goes tonight. Can they stay healthy? Montas wasn't good last night.
Ty Butler
He had been good in his last.
Peter Rosenberg
He'D been all right, but he wasn't good last night.
Ty Butler
That's not a guy. Yeah. That's not a guy you're going to trust.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, no, you're. You're.
Ty Butler
Look, your main guys, Mania, Peterson and Sanga.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes. In a playoff series, they're going to be those guys. Holmes is going to the bullpen. That should. That should help you a lot in the postseason. A guy like him and. And then Montas becomes another guy.
Ty Butler
If Montage can give me like four or five innings, which is all he gives you anyway. I'm just don't. Don't get bludgeoned.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Ty Butler
And in the timeframe that he's in.
Peter Rosenberg
The game in the meantime, like I said, football continues with training camps. They had the Back Together Again weekend, which was a lot of fun. And the New York teams aren't really either teams. There's no celebration going on right now. There's the Aaron Rodgers stuff. Doesn't hover over the jets anymore. And the jets have been sort of this team without turbulence. It has been a steady as she goes. It has been a. It has been a quiet. Which is a weird thing to say about the jets, but it's true. A quiet, normal training camp outside of.
Ty Butler
The Justin Field scare.
Peter Rosenberg
But even that, Think about it. Even that. In the moment you heard about him being carted off the field, the first reaction. I know mine was it just, here we go again. Like it just every year, this freaking curse. Like I joke with my friends all the time that Joe Namath had to have sold his soul. He had to have. So, like, what kind of curse can just hang over this? But it turns out to be not as nearly as bad at all. In fact, he's back on the field, which is a good sign. But it's just. It has been quiet now. It wasn't quiet today. Why Bart Scott was there. It's never quiet when Bart Scott's coiled.
Ty Butler
Up with the Mickey D's, man. McDonald's, you say they had the McDonald's bag. Just Bart. No, Bart being Bart.
Peter Rosenberg
That's Bar P. And Bart is right. But Bart and Carlin were at jets camp today. So they talked with Justin Fields, among others. But let's. Let's hear from Justin Fields, first and foremost. Remember, the Steelers wanted him back, Ty. They did want to talk to him to bring him back. He said no. And he waited instead of taking the offer that the Steelers were giving him until free agency began and right away sign with the Jets. So they asked him why the jets just the opportunity.
Justin Fields
You know, I think me and AG have the same mindset. Of course, him coming from Detroit, they've been successful over the last couple of seasons. And me playing in Chicago, me playing against them in my first three years in the league, you know, I seen, you know, their mindset. I've seen their culture. I see how they play the game of football. So I think just that exciting piece, AG really stressed about how he was going to change the culture, and I just wanted to be a part of it. So, like I said, I'm excited to be here.
Peter Rosenberg
AG being Aaron Glenn.
Ty Butler
I also think that there is a little bit of ill will about how he was handled last year with Pittsburgh. They were born, so he gets bench, but, yeah, I'm for it.
Peter Rosenberg
Absolutely.
Ty Butler
I didn't remember that. Obviously, I remembered he played in Chicago, but him going up against those Lions defenses, I didn't remember that.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I mean, that's. So there's a. There's already that understanding. I remember Glenn got the job, and you started, like, hearing already, like, Aaron Glenn knew exactly what he wanted to do when he took the jets job. There were coaches he wanted, there were players he wanted, and clearly Justin Fields was one of them. So that's. That's important. But for Fields, there is a comfort zone here that he didn't have in Pittsburgh. Why Garrett Wilson, number one was. You know, those guys are close. They played together, Ohio State, and it's. That does factor in for him when it comes to a decision of having guys that he has played with and in the offense. For a guy that has bounced around, that has had different coaches and different systems, you got to feel like that's an important thing.
Justin Fields
Yeah. I mean, I know with Garrett and Ruck, it's definitely easy for me to read their body language, you know, when they're running certain routes, when they might see something, when they're settling down in a zone. We've gotten those reps way back in the day, and to be honest, when I got out here, it felt like we didn't even miss a beat. So with Garrett, with. With Ruck and all those guys, it's definitely, you know, great seeing those guys here. And, you know, if you told me five, six years ago that we'd be playing on the same team, I wouldn't believe it. So it's. It's.
Peter Rosenberg
It's.
Justin Fields
It's definitely great. Great having those guys back.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, Ruck being Jeremy Rucker at the tight end as well, who was at Ohio State and had a. They've all played Together at Ohio State, Justin Fields, who has played for several different coaches, including of course, Mike Tomlinson, was asked to compare Tomlin to Aaron Glenn.
Justin Fields
Yeah, I think both of these coaches, I think they're both great leader of men, they're both defensive minded. You know, they both are very passionate about the game. But I think the biggest thing is the ability to talk to, you know, players and leading them, you know, in all circumstances, on a good day, on a bad day, through adversity, through the good times, you can see it. And you know, as a player, it's not hard for you to, you know, decipher what coaches can do that and what coaches can't. But, you know, right off the get go, you can still see that AJ Is that kind of guy, that he's a great leader in that he knows what he's doing and he knows what he wants to instill into our team and like I said, what culture he wants to build this place up to be.
Peter Rosenberg
Glenn has been a guy that right from the start you could tell he's got the commanding voice. Even. Even when he talks to the media, he talks in that coach speak, addressing my players kind of way. And that's very Tomlin esque, isn't it? Yeah. Like when Tomlin talks to the media, he does have a cadence about him that is as if he's addressing players. Glenn does the same damn thing for me as a reporter back in the day. Like, I hated that. Cause I'm always like, don't just talk to us, don't. You're not addressing a player. But then I understand that for a coach, it's sort of like I got to stay in that mode. And I've realized that that's sort of just that that's how they deliver when they are speaking in the public, whether it's to media or whether it's to his players.
Ty Butler
Now, what hasn't been lost on me is it feels like whether it's the players or you're getting from even Mike Tannenbaum taking shots at last year's coaching.
Peter Rosenberg
Staff, I'm getting to that.
Ty Butler
Garrett Wilson had something to say. Avt, Will McDonald and Tannenbaum, I don't know if it was get up or first take, talked about how they're vastly improved. Like there have been some Scud missiles taken at that coaching staff of last season.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, well, let's ask Garrett Wilson what's different about camp between this year and last year. Now, this is Garrett talking to the media. This is not from. From Barton Collins.
Garrett Wilson
Yeah, just the competitiveness. Not just talking about being competitive. Like, no, no, no. You got to train that way. It's got to feel like that at practice. It's got to feel like if you lose, it sucks at practice. It can't just be, oh, it'll, you know, we'll turn it on when, when the game comes. Right. I think that's the main thing that I see that's different. Just the way we're practicing, the intensity, the stakes. It feels like there's stakes. You know, depending on which period it is, the stakes feel higher based on whether it's a competition red zone or a two minute. It feels like you won the drill when you won the drill.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Garrett Wilson
And it feels like you lost when you lost. And to me, that's. That's how I like it. You know, it's practice, yes, but there's also ability to. An opportunity to practice winning and get that feeling and what it takes to just do it right on a consistent basis. And I think it starts out here. So that's something that I love to be a part of. And, you know, throughout these first couple months, I've seen it, you know, for sure, with the way he's hammering home stuff in meetings.
Peter Rosenberg
Now. You mentioned what other players have said. Breece hall has said some things. We have heard players. And you hear Garrett referencing this difference in tone with the coaching, where things feel more important, where you feel like you're being led. You know, you heard Justin Fields, who wasn't here last year, but talking about certain guys, you just know, you could just tell their leader of men. And it's. You're taking it as shots at Salah. I'm taking it as there's a young core on this team. Sauce. One of them. Garrett's obviously one of them. Breeze is one of them. AVT is one of them. There's a bunch of them. They were begging to be coached, and it sounds like they were being coddled, not coached, and they didn't like that. And they like this better. That's what it sounds like to me. They wanted this more than that. And I don't know how much of it is solid or how much of it is Rogers presence being such a magnet. And Rogers is a guy that, as you know, he sort of likes to take the pressure off. He doesn't like the intensity. And he is somebody that will call you out, but don't say anything to him because he and Garrett butted heads a lot. And in the beginning it was kind of cute because he thought, oh, I Love it. He's passionate. And he was almost patting the kid on the head. Then after a while, Garrett's like, well, hang on. When you're wrong and I call you out, why do you like you? I'm supposed to take it from you, but you don't take it from me. Like, it's two way street. So a lot of stuff was going on there that it didn't feel like there was anyone in real control. This feels like with Aaron Glenn that he's got control of the whole thing. The players practice early, so they're not out in the heat. They're there early. There's a demand to be there early. There's a standard. Ty, I know that all sounds like a bunch of fluff.
Ty Butler
Sounds like what we were saying about Robert Sala when he first got here.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't remember ever saying there was a standard with Robert Salah, there was passion and energy and emotion. With Robert Sala, I don't remember knowing.
Ty Butler
That there was a standard that was going to be the standard.
Peter Rosenberg
That was passionate energy.
Ty Butler
But that was the standard back then. That was the standard.
Peter Rosenberg
It wasn't a standard.
Ty Butler
The passion and emotion, like, that was the standard. That was the culture.
Peter Rosenberg
It was very Rex like. It was very Rex like, which is, I think, why it was received so well. Because Rex came in, was bombastic, had his sayings and phrases and how we're going to play and what we're going to do.
Ty Butler
Then that we all ate up and got us excited about the season.
Peter Rosenberg
So you. You don't feel like Glenn, who has a very parcels influence in what he does, you don't feel like. And I know, look, I've done this before training camp. It's. It's Shangri La. We all fall in love. It's great.
Ty Butler
It's Camelot against your own players.
Peter Rosenberg
I am not talking about team success in the immediate future. What I'm talking about is a franchise that has been so rudderless, so wayward, so whatever works today, let's play that now. They desperately needed somebody to sort of set a standard of. This is what we do every day. It's regimented. We have to be regimented. And everybody's gonna fall in line. And if you don't, you're out.
Ty Butler
I get it.
Peter Rosenberg
And there's players that are telling you, man, we have been craving this.
Ty Butler
No, I understand that. And I am not. Here's the problem or my problem.
Peter Rosenberg
Mm.
Ty Butler
I am a fan of this team that has been burned for so long. I gotta see it to believe it.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, I don't disagree.
Ty Butler
All of this sounds great. In July, of course come September if the they're 04. All of that culture stuff and standard. Well, thanks.
Peter Rosenberg
We all know that.
Ty Butler
But that's what I'm saying.
Peter Rosenberg
But we all understand.
Ty Butler
Get excited about asking you to be excited. What a culture.
Peter Rosenberg
When did I ask you to be excited?
Ty Butler
Whether it's emotion or it's a standard, like we can choose the words we want.
Peter Rosenberg
At what point did I say I want you to be excited?
Ty Butler
I'm just telling you how I feel listening to that. It's great.
Peter Rosenberg
But the players aren't. You were saying you didn't like the shots being taken or attempts of shots being taken at Robert Sala. And I'm telling you I don't know if they're taking shots or telling you how badly they just wanted to be coached this way.
Ty Butler
I didn't necessarily say I didn't like it. I just. I thought it was. I thought it was something that caught my attention.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, look, I'm not asking you to put the pom poms on because I'm not either. And I don't like. I'm not looking at this season as like they're going to be this special team that's going to shock the world. I'm looking as did my favorite football team finally figure out the fact that enough of the pomp and circumstance and how about just shut the hell up, go unnoticed and untalked about and just build a standard again. Detroit Lions. We all laughed at Dan Campbell, but that second season by the end of that year was like it's starting to happen.
Ty Butler
The announcement of their arrival starting to turn. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So this could be a 1 in 16. It could be.
Ty Butler
Okay, so here's the deal.
Peter Rosenberg
But while you're on the way, you're starting to develop something. That's all I'm saying. And if I have to live through it to get to where the Lions are, I'll go there. But that's what Dan Campbell did in Detroit.
Ty Butler
Did that Dan Campbell led Lions team have that the jets don't?
Peter Rosenberg
The quarterback then. I was going to say a quarterback, but quarterback. But that's what Justin Fields.
Ty Butler
They're holding to a Super Bowl.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes. And he was also kicked out by his previous coach. Thought he was unemotional, not a leader. Get him out of here. Ran him out of town.
Ty Butler
Yes. But he also had taken them to a Super Bowl. So his resume. He's got a lot more accomplishments on his resume than Justin Fields.
Peter Rosenberg
I got you.
Ty Butler
They Were. Come on, they were scoring a ton of points. Let's not do that.
Peter Rosenberg
I got you.
Ty Butler
Let's not act like that.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm not saying Justin Fields is that. But this is a short term, cheap option. Look at a guy to see if Justin Fields can turn into something that you thought he could be and if he doesn't, you can find one. I'm not saying it's the same script. I'm saying for Majet perspective. When was the last time it was quiet, it was drama less. And it felt like for once all they're doing is just getting to work and going to work. They're not trying to make headlines. They're not trying to get your attention. They're not trying to do anything. They're just get to work. Go to work and get the job done. A little standard and let the little engine that could just puff away down the tracks while we just sit back and watch instead of being impatient. They got to win now. They got to. They gotta. I just gotta win Super Bowl. They gotta do this. They gotta do that. No, let this just marinate. And I'm fine with it. Even if it takes another season, I am fine with it. Because this sounds more like what it should be versus the past, where it had a lot of slogans and a lot of. Right. Everything had something.
Ty Butler
Oh, gosh, no brain.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Come on.
Ty Butler
No, I'm with you. I guess this is the emotional part of it.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, the Fitzmagic stuff.
Ty Butler
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Like with Bowles, like, it just. There was always something where, like, what are we doing?
Ty Butler
Polls did have that inaugural year where they went 10 and 6.
Peter Rosenberg
You mean someone else's team. He coached someone else's team to a 10 and 6 record.
Ty Butler
I mean, I guess technically, if you're naming Sauce and Breeze.
Peter Rosenberg
And what happened in the last.
Ty Butler
Joe. Doug Douglas's team. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
What happened in the last game?
Ty Butler
Yeah, they went to Buffalo and imploded.
Peter Rosenberg
And showed you who they really were.
Ty Butler
Exactly. But I guess this is the emotional part of me talking.
Peter Rosenberg
I hear you. All right, well, let's hear some more talk. This is now Aaron Glenn. How does Fields look? Because you talk about quarterback. Listen, he's improving every day as a quarterback. And the thing is, he's starting to.
Garrett Wilson
Really, really get the respect not just.
Peter Rosenberg
Of the offense, but the defense. Because the way that he operates, the way he comes out every day, he's steady Eddie. Right.
Garrett Wilson
Never too high, never too low.
Peter Rosenberg
And man, he's really starting to understand this offense. And the thing is, he still has a ways to go and that's okay. We have a long way, all right? We have a lot of time and I expect him every day to continue to improve in that aspect. That's exactly what I'm talking about. All of that right there. Aaron Glenn with Bart and Carlin, 800 now. 193776 we'll get your calls on the jets and we'll catch up with the Giants. How things are going there, including Russell. Russell Wilson as the number one quarterback, but Jackson Dart has a shot at the SEC as the backup and wouldn't that be a story? We continue Ty Butler in with Don Han Rosenberg, ESPN New York.

Peter Rosenberg
Is that what I'm doing, or am I trying to help people? I'm trying to uplift.
Caller
It's a mix of. It's a mix of the Knicks and bart.
Peter Rosenberg
That's why I'm trying to make. I'm trying to make the world better. I'm trying to help you better yourself. Help me help you.
Caller
That's right. All right, fellas, real quick, before y' all let me go, man, I'm really excited about the Jets. Ty, I understand you're tired of hearing speeches, mantras, and this. You know that. And the third, you want results. We all want results. But I'm just so psyched from what I saw on Saturday and what's going on and what Aaron Glenn is bringing to the table and how the team's responding. And I'm not gonna lie, they're throwing shots at Salah because it's true. Like, you see, Aaron Glenn is just, you know, trying to put the proof in the pudding. I'm not necessarily saying what he's saying has come to light yet, but it's just little things that you see that we haven't seen before. And I'm fully. I'm fully invested, and I'm buying in, man. I'm going to about four games this season. Can't wait for week one. We could press the fast forward button right now. I'll do it six times because I want to get there whether we win or lose. I love my organization. I love this team, and I just want to see the. The. The. I just want to see the results. Hey, real quick, Ty. I understand you don't like people smoking and all that, but this is my. This is my.
Ty Butler
Nah, just this. On the train. It's on the train.
Caller
As long as you don't smoke in front of kids or you don't smoke in front of somebody's, like, business or establishment, like to make other people feel uncomfortable. As long as you don't do that, we good. Because as soon as I get off work, the boulevard is in the air.
Ty Butler
Listen, I got no problem with y'.
Peter Rosenberg
All.
Caller
It's in the air.
Ty Butler
I got no problem with you guys.
Caller
I know. I know that. I enjoy.
Ty Butler
I grew up in a household of smokers, man, so I got no issues with that. It was just coming to work on the train that's the last thing I want to smell like what happens if Rogers throws a party on Aaron Glenn's defense in week one?
Peter Rosenberg
I am not going to go on record and saying that's not happening. But that's not happening.
Ty Butler
But if it does happen, it's not happening. Which is why if it DK Metcalf. You're saying that it's not happening?
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Ty Butler
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Week one, Aaron Rodgers, Week one. Look at his history.
Ty Butler
Which means that there is tremendous significance in the fact that if it does happen, you're going to come on the very next day and say what? Because that's significant. If you're confident it's not going to happen, it means that it's significant. If it does.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. In a crazy world where Aaron Rodgers has a good start to a season, which historically he doesn't, let's say he does. And the jets defense gets smoked, I'm going to continue to say this is a marathon. It's a new. New. It's a new regime. The young core is becoming the leaders of this team now.
Ty Butler
So it's not a bad look.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Ty Butler
You dismissed him. No disrespectfully.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Ty Butler
And your defense just.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Ty Butler
Torched.
Peter Rosenberg
Doesn't matter.
Ty Butler
By that 42 year old who we told.
Peter Rosenberg
Doesn't matter. No. He does. He. His timeline no longer fit the franchise's timeline. It doesn't. There is no looking back, Ty. What the jets did, they needed to do. They needed to get out of the business of the back page and of appealing to media and coverage and getting attention. Get out of.
Ty Butler
That'll be on the back page.
Peter Rosenberg
If he throws a look, you can't avoid it. And there's going to be face palm. Same old jets moments. They're coming. Be ready for it. But it doesn't mean that if the right people are involved and I know what I know from what Aaron Glenn and why he was hired and Parcell's influence, if all that I know about this and why Glenn wanted this job, why Parcell suggested him to get this job. All this and the support he's getting from a lot of really good people tells me that as long as Woody Johnson stays the hell out of the way in time, this will be right. The only thing that can ruin it is if the owner gets bored and wants to jump in again. And that's where the mistakes begin. Let's go to Dan and Old Bridge. Hey, Dan.
Caller
What's going on guys? Been a great show.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you. He's pretty good. He's pretty good.
Caller
He is Good. I've talked to Ty, I talked to both you guys multiple times.
Bart Scott
But I'm happy Ty's getting, you know, prime time spot.
Caller
Oh yeah, but he's killing it. You guys both doing good. But yeah.
Bart Scott
As a lifelong Jeff fan, you know.
Caller
I don't want to reiterate what everyone.
Bart Scott
Else has been saying, but to me it just seems like this version more is like an actual team. Unlike a bunch of players thrown together like a Madden video game kind of last year. I feel like that's what Glenn and company is obviously like they've been saying, trying to instill in everybody. It's that team spirit. And you touched on Woody Johnson too. And I mean I've kind of read numerous articles. I hope they're true that Woody's kind of, you know, taken a step back more than he was last year. And I think that that's part of the recipe, you know, for us to have success going forwards. But I'm looking forward to it. I think it's going to be a run heavy offense. You know, as far as Justin Fields, we'll see what happens. But yeah, but I'm optimistic on everything.
Ty Butler
Yeah, no, no, it's also different. Appreciate the call, Dan. We've removed the anxiety because last couple years it was man got away Super Bowl.
Peter Rosenberg
This was about the lonely Lombardi.
Ty Butler
We went from haven't made the playoffs in eight straight years to better win the title in the next two. It's like, man, wait, and now we're.
Peter Rosenberg
At longest drought in the NF currently in the NFL and you know what I'm saying, it can go another year.
Ty Butler
Yeah, I'm not mad.
Peter Rosenberg
It can go another year. I am not going to be mad if they don't make the playoffs this year.
Ty Butler
Dan just triggered something for me and it is you go into a season absence of the anxiety that you had the last couple years, which is kind of refreshing.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Ty Butler
But make no mistake about it. I'm not with you on the like there's no pressure on this pressure on them to win.
Peter Rosenberg
Why? What pressure?
Ty Butler
Because wins matter. Of course. But I'm not, I'm not saying like we're firing the guy at the end of the season. Well then you got to show some type of growth. Like all of this talk about culture and standard. But if it doesn't materialize and lead to wins, none of it matters.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm sorry. If they go, if they go one.
Ty Butler
Give me a number.
Peter Rosenberg
They go one in 16.
Ty Butler
Okay. Yeah, that's a red flag.
Peter Rosenberg
Hang on. 16 games. The point differential is like you're minus 20.
Ty Butler
That tells me you're a team that does not know how to win.
Peter Rosenberg
Can close, Right?
Ty Butler
Why?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, young team don't have all the pieces yet.
Ty Butler
That young don't have all the pieces yet. Allen, your wide receiver just got a second contract.
Peter Rosenberg
Yep.
Ty Butler
Your cornerback just got a second contract. Your running back, I don't know that he's going to get it, but he's looking for a second contract.
Peter Rosenberg
That running back room is packed.
Ty Butler
Jermaine Johnson's looking for a second contract.
Peter Rosenberg
Coming off an injury.
Ty Butler
Quincy Williams, Yes. Relatively young, but these guys have been in the league long enough to where it's time to start winning some football games. Not a Super bowl again. It's not what it was the last two seasons. 1 6. You're outlining, like, the perfect scenario where we can digest losing 1 in 16 with a minus 20 point differential, which is impossible, by the way. It's impossible. That's excruciating. Imagine sitting there for six for 17, 18 weeks.
Peter Rosenberg
Remember the win, you know, put you on a plus side. So one blowout win. No, look, I'm.
Ty Butler
You're not sounding, you know, a beat fourth, but you also know 13.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm being facetious now. All right? One in 16 is not acceptable. Of course. Especially even if you're losing close games, because at some point, you got to learn how to win the close games. What I'm trying to say is, is that sometimes a season is not defined by your record, but what it looks like. And only those. Those situations only matter in the start of a rebuild. And that's where you're at. You cleaned house, you're starting over, and now you're. You're. You're. You're handing the franchise off. C.J. mosley's gone. All the veterans that were supposed to be a leader.
Ty Butler
I don't know that I can call this a rebuild.
Peter Rosenberg
How is it not? We've literally got a new coach and a new general manager.
Ty Butler
We spent the last two years.
Peter Rosenberg
And a new quarterback.
Ty Butler
We spent the last two years talking about Rodgers being the perfect fit for this team. Why? Because of how talented they were? That talent Still.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it's not. No, no, no, no. It's a different team.
Ty Butler
It's the talent that we talked about still exists. The older guy and saw that. I'm not talking about the older guys.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, that's a big part of it because the older guys were supposed to be the leaders, the ones that got you there. And those guys are gone. But we. So now you're asking the next generation to step up.
Ty Butler
Everyone kept saying talented. They're a quarterback away.
Peter Rosenberg
They were a different roster.
Ty Butler
It's not a.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not a different roster.
Ty Butler
You just gave second contracts to two year. Two of your players.
Peter Rosenberg
That's two.
Ty Butler
It's not a.
Peter Rosenberg
How many are on the freaking team? 53. 3.
Ty Butler
It's not a complete. I don't know if I. I'm calling this a rebuild.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's see.
Ty Butler
Not a complete rebuild at least.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, what is. Ira Thing. Ira, Staten Island. Are you with me? That this is really more of a rebuild than the start of a rebuild? Or. Or do you believe a tie, that this is the same roster, just a new coach, and therefore the expectation should. Should remain somewhat the same?
Ty Butler
Not the same. I. I said don't give me super bowl talk, but it's not a complete rebuild. Okay?
Bart Scott
No, I totally. No disrespect to Ty. I totally agree with you, Alan. And I think there. It appears right now they're approaching this the right way and they're building from the ground up. And even though they do have some pieces left from the last regime, it's still a rebuild because there's different mentality. You got a quarterback that we really don't know if this guy's going to get it or not. I'm optimistic about it, but it has to prove it to me. And the good thing about this is, you know, it's been years since they've set the groundwork to try to get this thing right. And will it work or not? I don't know, but we're just gonna have to wait and see. You go back. I hate to throw Parcells out there because that's where Glenn came from, but it's so similar. And once again, Parcells had all the, you know, their credentials at that point. Aaron Glenn never called a play in the NFL as a head coach, but it just feels the same. I'm not saying he could have the same success, but he's approaching it and trying to build this the same way. And that, to me, that's exciting. Do I expect the playoffs this year? No. But I expect them to get better week by week. And that week one game. Allen, you're 100% right. I know the fans. It's a storyline. Rogers, Fields, whatever it might be. If they lose Sir Rogers, so be it. There's 16 more games. If they end up going 8, 9, losing to Rodgers, I don't care.
Ty Butler
Yeah, I mean, that's the difference between making it. I mean, you would care because that one loss would be the difference between you making a mess in the playoffs.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, but like, I don't know, I have it and Iris feeling the same way. I have a much different feeling about the jets this year than I did.
Ty Butler
The last two years going into the impatient for me. Yeah, you're a bit more impatient.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, you're, you're, you're definitely a little more tight. But I think Ira and I both have seen enough to know like this at least looks more like what it should be. Thank you. Iraq.

Peter Rosenberg
One that says agree with Alan. The other one that says agree with Ty.
Ty Butler
The dichotomy.
Peter Rosenberg
See, that's how you know we're doing it right. So we'll get to the calls. 8993776 shortly. But as we were just talking jets, let's catch up on the Giants as we continue to go camping here. Russell Wilson was named the starter. That's not a big surprise. Brian Dabel was on K. Adams podcast up in Adams and explained why he made that choice now.
Garrett Wilson
Yeah, he's had, he has a lot of experience. He's, he's played a lot of football. He's played at a high level. I think he's, he's been good for our, for our young players on both sides of the ball with how he approaches things, his process, his communication, still throws it well. You know, he's looked good in camp. He's down a little bit in weight, he's moving around pretty good. So I think a lot of guys have a lot of confidence in him. And again, he's a player that's played at a high level for such a long period of time that players that are young, which we have a lot of young players on our team, you know, look up to him a little bit, ask him a lot of questions and he's been, he's been excellent with the guys.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, it just seems like the obvious thing to do for the Giants is the reason why Russell Wilson chose to play here. Not just because it's New York, it's a big market, but because there was a clear opportunity here for him to play and that he still believes in his talent and what he can do. We saw last year with the Steelers that his scramble mode still messes up a lot of offenses because if he doesn't see the first option, you know what he's going to do. He's going to start scrambling around and that's not easy to do. I don't know how long they stay with Russell Wilson. I think early in the season what you're going to see out of the Giants is not only ability to run the ball, which they're going to do a lot. I think he's going to. There's going to be a couple of highlight, highlight plays with him and Neighbors because Neighbors is begging for the deep ball and we all know the moon ball. That's what Russ does. So I do think you're going to get some highlight film stuff. I think early on in the season the offense might have a little something special to it. But the more people see the, it's just the way it seems to go with Russ. But we all know this is like a season that either the defense is going to be so good, I think their defense could be special. Like my optimism with the Giants is this. I think they off to a better start than we think and I think their defense is the reason why. And as long as that defense is stays healthy because they don't have a lot of depth at all. They're very shallow. One injury can mess up things, but the one area they're not shallow in anymore is they can get to the quarterback and we don't. Brian Burns is special. Abdul Carter has, like. You should hear Bourne Burns talk about Carter like he already knows. Like he. They're not even playing real football yet. They can't tackle. Like, they can hit, they could bump. You know, you can't take a guy to the ground, though. But they can see already in Carter that he's a hunter when it comes to the quarterback, and they love him. But Kayvon Thibod, though, to me is such an X factor because, you know, like, when he was drafted, like, Bart and I interviewed him before the draft, and he had such a personality and he talked about even like, loving the idea of New York and if the Giants draft him, he would love it because he loves the idea of New York and he sees himself as he could build a career like Michael Strahan. And what he was saying is not necessarily like, you know, sack record, but along with that on the football field, he thinks, you know, I could become a big star in New York. Like, it's a perfect place for me. Like, he was excited about it. Then he came to New York and they know they weren't good. And he kind of didn't look like a guy that had his motor running all the time. And that was the.
Ty Butler
Which was said about him coming into that draft.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right. The issue is the talent's all there, but the motor's not always running. And then late in the season, if you remember, he started putting up numbers and everybody wanted to dismiss it, like, ah. Like it's all like, yeah, because now nobody cared. Or the other opponents weren't really trying against the Giant. Whatever it is. It's like some. Some late numbers in a season are considered fake hustle. But Burns was talking the other day about KT Thibodeau, and he said he flipped the switch somewhere in the middle of the season where he just, he got it. He understood what needed, what he needed to do. Coming to facility early, getting your work in, being a professional, how do you handle yourself? And the results started to show on the field. And that's why Burns, who's a straight talker, I don't know if you ever talked to him, but Burns is straight talk, no filter. And he said that's why he trusts him, because he thinks he flipped the switch. He figured it out last year and now coming into Training camp. Like, he's. He's that guy now. He's a pro and he's expecting him to have a big season. So if you tie, if you have him and Burns and then Abdul Carter lives up to what he can be. And I'm telling you, physical ability off the charts. It's a lot of for a rookie learning everything which will come. Those three guys could wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks. And you got three of them that you can just keep rotating in and out throughout a game. A Giant defense, and then let's throw in Dexter Lawrence. I don't care who's in the secondary. That quarterback's not going to have time. This Giant defense could be the reason why the Giants are better than anybody wants to anticipate, which includes, I believe, espn. Bet that has them. Right. With the shortest odds to go under on the win total.
Ty Butler
Yeah. Most bets for under wins on the season. Pucyk sent that to us.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I'm not saying take the over. I'm just saying I think they're going.
Ty Butler
To get the Giants to win the super bowl. According to Alan Hunt.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. No, that's not what I'm.
Ty Butler
Here's my. So I agree with that.
Peter Rosenberg
So I feel there's optimism there.
Ty Butler
I agree with, with everything that you just said.
Peter Rosenberg
And I don't know what the offense is going to be. I have no idea.
Ty Butler
That was the point I was going to make. That defense, as good as it is projected to be or could be, going to have to score some points. And I asked you this before the show, Russell Wilson, this version of him at this advanced stage, because we know he's. He's lost some of that mobility. He's not scrambling the way that he once was. Is he capable of giving you two to three great games? And if the answer is yes, then to your point that if we're constructing an argument for the Giants starting off better than we anticipate, it's the combination of the defense being excellent. It's Russell Wilson giving you like two or three great games. And it's also Brian Dable, remember two years ago was the coach of the year. So if those three things all work in tandem, then yeah, then the Giants can be. But I don't see it. What I do see, though, and you push back on this. I think they're winning Week one, like at Commanders. I think the Giants are beating Washington.
Peter Rosenberg
Week one in Washington.
Ty Butler
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
A commander's team that has high expectations.
Ty Butler
A commander's team that the Giant that.
Peter Rosenberg
Went into Detroit and just Stole every. Crushed everyone's dream in Detroit.
Ty Butler
Beat you guy Aaron Glenn's defense.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. And then. And then gave the. Gave the Eagles a fight.
Ty Butler
Week one is the most anything can happen week in all of aside from week 18.
Peter Rosenberg
You know what it is?
Ty Butler
You don't really know what's happening.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I'm with you and I know what you're saying. Week one is the. Is the. It's. It's like the Instagram filter of football. Don't believe it. Don't believe what you're looking at.
Ty Butler
I mean we saw the Patriots beat the Bengals last year. Week one of the Bengals ended up making the playoffs. But the Giants have always had success against that organization.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Ty Butler
You could argue should have beaten them last year and it's week one. Jaden Daniels, is he due for some type of a sophomore aggression? Maybe Russell Wilson. That. That is going to be the freshest. Russell Wilson is all year long because we're not going to see him at.
Peter Rosenberg
All during now Commander. Commanders are favored seven and a half in this game. Now they're the home team.
Ty Butler
I don't care about spreads in week one.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. But. But all right. But I'm just saying. Put your money where your mouth is. Would you take the Giants and the points?
Ty Butler
I would right now in a heartbeat.
Peter Rosenberg
Heartbeat. Okay. Because if they don't win that game, it's going to be, you know, at Cowboys, Dallas and then it's Chiefs on Sunday night. That's your home opener. By the way, is Mahomes and the Chiefs on Sunday night Football. That's your home.
Ty Butler
The chip on the shoulder. Chiefs.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes. Yeah. Chargers at Saints looks like the potential first win if within a short then.
Ty Butler
A short week against the Thursday night Football Eagles.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Yeah. So. But I think, you know, look, defense travels well. Defense can keep you in games. Defense gives you a chance.
Ty Butler
You got to score.
Peter Rosenberg
I. And I'm with you. But with Russ with Neighbors, I think the Giants have a running game that includes Russ, of course. But I do think they've got a running game that could be the weapon. They're not. I don't think it's going to be an air it out even though Neighbors is going to want it that way. I just think you're going to be so focused on trying to stop their run that that's where you'll take advantage of Neighbors. That's where the moon ball comes in and you just go, oh my God. Because there it goes. And Neighbors can get after it. Neighbors. The difference between last year and this year on K. Adam's podcast said this.
Garrett Wilson
I would probably say the people that.
Ty Butler
We put in this building this year.
Garrett Wilson
You know, adding, you know, a few more quarterbacks, Jameis Dart Russell, you know, Juwan Holland, you know, Adibo. So having those athletic guys, having those, those leaders that's on defense and offense, I think, you know, it's the is the drive that we've been feeling. We've been seeing a lot of leadership from those guys. So we're moving in the right direction, but still a long ways to go.
Peter Rosenberg
He could be special. And again, the connection with Russ will be something to watch. But we all know that at some point during the season, if things aren't going well, the Jackson Dart talk will get louder and louder. And he, by the way, is playing for backup right now. That's on the table for him, him and Jameis Winston. So keep an eye on that. Thanks for listening to Madon, Hunter, Han and Rosenberg podcast. I don't want to know how the sausage is made, man. I just want to know. It's good. Hear more of Don Allen and Peter weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers.
