This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Alan Rosenberg
That sounds like heaven to me.
Don Hahn
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 880 ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers.
Alan Rosenberg
5 o' clock in the big city. Don Hahn and Rosenberg hanging out with the old 6:30. At that time we're gonna pass it over to our coverage of the Mets and the pirates here on 880 ESPN. As the Mets won a game, they blew a lead, but they did win on a walk off sacrifice fly by Pete Alonso. And the Cabrera injury. Did you see that last night, Alan?
Don Hahn
I know that was hard to watch.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, that was really rough to watch. And you know, another home run barrage for the Yankees. Talk about dark cloud. That's certainly a dark cloud around the Yankees so.
Don Hahn
Well, just in time. DJ lemayhue now activated.
Alan Rosenberg
Yes. So we'll see what he's going to bring to the table. He's actually doing pretty well with the Somerset Patriots. But we were waiting on an update on Jason Tatum and it's no surprise the Celtics had tweeted this out. The Tatum underwent successful surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon. No timetable is currently available for his return, but is he expected to make a full recovery? Further updates will be provided when appropriate. So when you know, Achilles, any kind of history, I would think that you're. You're talking about brilliant pretty much all of next year, right?
Don Hahn
Yeah, it, it feels like it. It's.
Chuck D
Could he be back? Maybe back for playoffs?
Don Hahn
That's, that's hard to imagine because you're talking about less than a year and in this sport, the demand. I, I just, I don't know if that's the smart thing to do anyway.
Chuck D
But Rogers got back so good and he was great.
Don Hahn
Not really.
Chuck D
I know, I'm kidding. It took him the whole season to even get it together at all.
Don Hahn
Yeah, it took him a half year just to even get feel right again. So like kd, if you remember, wasn't that, that was over a year if I'm not mistaken.
Chuck D
So was it over a full year for Katie? He did it in the playoffs.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Chuck D
And he missed the whole next year with the playoffs. Oh yeah. Because then he skipped the entire year and came back and was gone. Right, right.
Alan Rosenberg
It's. Listen, Nick should have to apologize for it. You know, it is what it is and you feel bad but you, you know, the Celtics still are alive and we'll see if this is a rallying cry for them. That's why I caution Nick fans as much as you're in a celebratory mood, and you should be. The work is still not finished. I would expect, you know, the heart of a champion to come out, rally around their fallen teammate, you know, at home building, and try to force a game six. And if you're a Nick fan, you want to try to avoid that at all costs. As cool as it would be, guys, to clinch that series at home and Everybody takes over 7th Avenue and First time they clinched a home series since, you know, 2000 and all that, I don't think you want to dance with the devil, man. You know, don't give this team life. That's what you would do. Losing game five gives them life.
Chuck D
I really think the Celtics are going to go tremendously hard on Wednesday. Obviously, a lot will fall on Jalen Brown. And you lose. What you immediately lose is the threat that Tatum constantly is. Now, he took over in the first half, I mean, the second half. But don't forget, guys, in the first quarter, Tatum was being that guy who every time he moved Drew in a second defender. And what did that lead to for Derek white? Wide open, three pointers in the first half. So losing Tatum is more than the 40 points that he can bring you and the clutch shooting. It's all the other ways that he confuses things for the Knicks defense. So it's a. It's. It's going to be. You know what we've been talked a lot about Joe Missoula. There's been a lot of good and a lot of bad said about him. Alan, this will be the most interesting thing he's faced since he's been head coach, coming up with what he's going to do tomorrow night.
Don Hahn
He's the guy that talks about like embracing the darkness, right? That. That every journey is going to. Not always in the light. You got to go through this, all that, whatever it is. Like he, he does a lot of this stuff. So I imagine this for him is just a long. I'm not going to say it's things that he enjoys because of course you don't enjoy this. But I do think. I don't think this is something that would worry him or scare him. I think this is one of those things that he feels like, let me see if I can rally these guys together. This sets up all the motivation and everything else, and all they're looking for right now is that one game, you know, one game survival type thing. But yeah, I mean, this is the big challenge. This will be defensive schemes. This will be everything that they can do to take The Knicks out of what they want to do and hope they have a night where Brown is great and the threes are dropping.
Alan Rosenberg
We were talking about the great Chuck D's tweet and maybe it was a little over the top going after the Celtics. So we figured, well, let's reach out to him. And Chuck D joins us here on Don Holland Rosenberg, the legend. How are you, sir?
Chuck D
Man, what do you mean over the top? I mean, it just happened to be bad timing that the tweet was going around at the time that Tatum got injured. But it wasn't about his injury. It was about that. That bush league style of play that backfired on him. And I was tweeting the whole time to my guys in Boston who I vehemently go tweet or X or whatever back and forth with. And it just happened to go around. But you know, people out there, they're on social media, but they don't know how to read social media. They're a bunch of headline readers. So they saw the one tweet and, and they put it in and they glossing it in bronze and sent it around when I had a whole timeline going back and forth. Matter of fact, the whole playoff, you know, that's what we do. I mean, those are the fan seats when the games are played. So we know our place. There's no such thing as a professional fan. So that just happened. It was unfortunate that happened to Tatum. I'm a big fan of Jason Tatum. I think I'll be playing a concert soon in Boston. I'm definitely in and I might wear Jason's jersey that night. But the people I was going back and forth with, there's Celtic fans giving it to me for two years and I gave it to him back. This style of ball was unethical. Bush league.
Well, that's Chuck. That Chuck. Listen, that's the part, the bad timing. I totally understand. I went back and read your whole timeline. I saw you. It was not based on that moment. The part that I question, I am a Celtics fan. What's unwavering, what's unethical about the way they play the game. I just don't understand what's unethical about it.
Understand this. Hacker Mitch in the second quarter, Bush sacking players at the perimeter. Bush. They're not mixing it up. Regardless whether you want to win or lose. It's unwatchable basketball. Unwatchable. 24 teams in the NBA are unwatchable because they mimic that bush league style. And here's the other thing. They took six trades in a row at one particular time. How bush is that?
Okay, no, listen, I don't agree with you.
However you have to, man, you probably didn't vote for. I voted for.
So who the hell do you think I voted for? Wait a minute. Why'd you go there? Do you know who you're talking?
You said you don't agree with me and that's okay.
No, well, Chuck, no. No need to. That's. That's. That is completely out of bounds and couldn't I. Unless.
Oh, wait, you the referee now? You the referee?
Well, I don't know. Well, listen, congratulations on who you voted for then. I think we probably voted for the same person, but who knows? I'll just say this, but nothing that you just said was unethical. You're wrong.
It's not boundaries. I'm just a fan in the seats. Look across those boundaries. The players are all a fraternity. They get along with each other better than we do as fans. But you know, we as a Knick fan, we beat each other up as Knick fans. You know what I'm saying? So there's no out of the boundaries for me.
That's fine. I just don't understand what's unethical. Bush league. I can hear the argument. I just don't get what's unethical. I mean, I don't just don't get it.
Don Hahn
Let me jump in.
Chuck D
Because you don't shoot six trades in a row. You don't. You just don't do it.
Don Hahn
That's why we call.
Chuck D
The only way to defend ethical style of that is to match it with threes. Because no matter what you might say, three is always going to be bigger than two. So then you're going to have a perimeter to perimeter type of game. And the only way to match it when you play a real basketball, just trying to score the basket, it's like the only way we could get more than two is to get three. And it turns into much after a while.
Don Hahn
It's something unwatchable. It's something that, Chuck, that I know that we have talked about with the Celtics even going back to last year. And I've constantly used the same word to consistently use arrogance. And that is something that other people have nodded their head when I've said it. They play with an arrogance, with the style of play, which is this arrogance of threes. And we're just going to bury you in threes and we're going to take a lot of them. So, you know, I remind people when everybody says they're the best three point shooting team in the NBA, that is factually incorrect. They are not the best. In fact, they were top 10, but they were 10th. Do you know the Knicks were a better three point shooting team than them? The difference is they took more. So of course when you take more, you're going to make more. And that's what they're about. And they're about riding that wave of threes. And it is something that a lot of people watch and I've talked to scouts about and there's a lot of scouts that root against them because they hate the style. They don't like it for the sport, they think it's overusing the three, that it's not entertaining.
Chuck D
Take them off the TV work, being on national television playing trash ball like that.
Well, now let me ask you this question.
No, let me ask you a question. Analysts. When the analysts get fired because they've been terrible all the year, cultures get fired. You know, players get traded and dropped off the team. Even bands. Bands end up if they don't do good records of concert performances, they don't do them no more. Analysts are like people. If they say any old thing, here comes the tornado. It's a heat wave. You answer that to me.
I feel you. That's fair.
That's been so much credit. I mean, the guy that got older got exploding cybertrucks all over the place. I'm a Knick fan. That's all it is. I've been a knick fan since 1967. I attended a game with my dad in the old garden on 50th and 8th. I don't want to hear anybody tell me about the Knicks.
Now let me ask you a question though, Chuck. What do you think of the Knicks offense when they get the ball moving off a rebound and they're in transition, it really moves well, it can stagnate when they get into the half court. What do you think of the Knicks offense under Tibbs?
Give Tibbs credit for developing a style and a system where players are able to plug in and out of. You know, I mean, it develops itself. Because you know what? He has a brain on the floor that's equivalent to Isaiah Thomas, who's the main motor, the engine of the Detroit distance, who went all against the aisle to beat teams like Chicago and also go up against the Lakers and the Celtics and hand it to them. That's what Jalen Brunson is. He's Isaiah Thomas, Tim Hardaway and Barry Sanders on the basketball floor.
Don Hahn
I've heard the Barry Sanders one before. The footwork, it's incredible. Chuck, you are realizing that the Knicks now are the favorite to get out of the east according to Vegas, that they are the second highest odds to win the NBA championship. What a difference a couple of weeks makes is this.
Chuck D
Pay them no mind, Alan. Pay them no mind. As a matter of fact, I got my ears closed. As soon as everybody on the TV stations are now favorite Nixon, I start seeing the gazy fans show up. The celebrity role gets tripled back with people that don't even know the lineup of last year. Corny ass celebrities, man. I mean really, I'm closing my eyes and I'm enjoying a ride game by game. Win, lose a draw. And when the game is over, I go back to my regular life. But when the game is on, anything could be said and anything could happen. And that's how real New York fans feel. Real New York basketball fans have seen it. We could take anything. And really our biggest fights are against ourselves.
Chuck, who's your.
Don Hahn
So you say that.
Chuck D
Let me ask you, Chuck, besides Jalen, who's obviously going to go down in Nick lore as an all time great if you had to pick another guy on this team. It's a pretty lovable bunch. Who do you think is the most classic kind of New York Knick on this current team?
Josh Hart is Josh Hart, man. But then again, I don't want to individualize. Look, when I first started following the Knicks, give y' all a real story. Listen. New York, 1967, at the knee of my father. But I finally started to understand a little bit about the game. It was a 68, 69 season right now. 68, 69 season. All of a sudden we got this trade where. Where the Knicks traded a guy who I liked, Howard Coleman. I just liked his name and I like Bellamy. And we traded the guys. I'm like asking my dad, well, we're getting the guy called the Butcher. I'm like, we got the Butcher, Dave. The Butcher comes in and we never lost after that until we ran up against the Boston Celtics who were old and Bill Russell made me cry. But then that's what bit me. I was like, I like this game. I'm also a Mets fan and I also was a Jets fan. So I was spoiled in 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73. I couldn't understand how we got Earl to Pearl Monroe who killed us in 1970 and made me cry. That's how long I've been a Knick fan. So a lot of young guys out there, they're comparing it to the 90s Knicks where you know, we didn't win, but you know what? We gave it a fight. The 73, 72 Knicks. 70, 69 Knicks. Yo, this is what this team reminds me of. So you really can't peel off individuals. Everybody got their thing. I was telling Allen last a couple of weeks ago that Bridges finding a role. He could be our Bill Bradley. Bill Bradley's rap jersey is hanging up in the garden and most fans don't know why. Because you can't find a stat that says Dick Barnett or Bill Bradley actually deserves to hang in the Raptors. Bill Bradley found his role to the coal mines trade. It just. He was just that extra whatever. That's just Josh Hart. That's, that's also Mikal Bridges. That's what you're not going to be in that top rank. OG reminded the deal with OG reminded me when the Bush had came to the Knicks. And here's another thing about the condition that Tims puts the Knicks through. He's a basketball coach talking to basketball players so we can't get into minutes, police and ratcheting and all that. These guys play basketball. You look at the trade. OG goes from Toronto where they had some kind of cupcake conditioning and the Knicks style water out. He had the Paul Hammy last year and this year he's Superman. Now on the counter, look at IQ and RJ's conditioning up in Toronto, right? Is it different from this year? And some Knicks happen to retain that Tim's ethic. Like Hardenstein putting the joker in a three or four game yoke. Not stopping them but giving them issues with non stop relentless whatever he puts on him. Then you got Julius, you got Julius and Dante in Minnesota. You don't think that it came to Minnesota putting that extra off in it. We got six all over the NBA that are the engines to the motors of these teams. Now the Knicks motor, you can't individualize it. I'm telling you. Cat. OG Bridges, see, And the captain, Josh Hart. They remind me of the 72, 73 Knicks. The Minute Men. Deuce. Yeah. It's only eight or nine people that might show up, but they all in sync. They are carnivorous, they are vipers. And when they get to know each other, if they like each other, the only thing that's going to divide them is money. And usually money, you know, corrupts the room, you know. You know they say when money talks, God walks out the room. So we just hope that that doesn't become a factor.
Alan Rosenberg
I just like the fact that they're almost like the anti NBA. There's no load management. They don't take nights off. They're personal. That makes it so much fun to watch this team.
Don Hahn
Yeah, they want to play.
Chuck D
Skip all players. They're not the Catholics. They're not this that. They're basketball players. They turn the game into something else. I don't know what. Yeah, yeah. The stray ball stack at the perimeter, that's another game. Even the can do that. It's unwatchable when you got teams going. Look, you might say, okay, the Knicks and the Celtics, it might go through that. You ever seen a Wizard and Daz game where they're going tray to trade and missing everything?
Oh, it's bad. It can be bad.
Take me to a commercial break. All right, now, I'm in the entertainment business. I'm in the entertainment. I do a concert around the world, whatever I want the bottom line, if the crowd is doing something else with their phone and not paying attention to the stage, they're out of here. Sports, we're in the United States of sports. Sports is everywhere. We ain't got to watch. We gotta watch that crap and garbage. I want to see good basketball, well rounded. The trade been there since 1979, but they utilized it. You want to hear, before I go, you want to hear my solution for the trade? The trait disease in the NBA, Even the arcade games, the old arcade games, they start counting the three after like 20 seconds. In or 60 seconds, you'll get a three pointer for the first 40 seconds. Then if you hit the shot after 40 seconds, they give you three points. I believe that the NBA, you ain't got to change a floor, you ain't got to change a rule. You should say that three point accounts after four minutes to go in the quarter. That will fix the trade problem because it created an inside outside game. The center would be usable. And then when you get down to the final four minutes of the quarter, then the trade counts and it would make.
And it would create a lot of excitement because if a team's down big, they know that after. In the final four minutes, they could start jacking threes to try to come back.
Well, that's what happened in the 80s. They didn't utilize the trade until crunch time.
Don Hahn
Yes, that's.
Chuck D
That's very interesting, Chuck. That's. That's cool stuff.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, man, thank you for.
Chuck D
I know I'm talking about. Been a fan a long time, but, you know, my mentor and my Mentor and the guy I listen to. I listen to Alan Hall.
Alan Rosenberg
What?
Chuck D
He's very.
Hey, me too. Me too.
Big shout out to my guys at Nick Fan tv, we introduced me to a long time ago. And also guys I listened to, you know, Justin Terminy and Eddie Johnson. And then my list is short. I listen to 9 million people across talking about one game like football lost me. Because here comes the game and you got eight people talking about the one game lost me. You lost me. I rather listen to Stevie Wonder record.
Don Hahn
Well, that. That's for damn sure.
Chuck D
Hey, congrats on the. On the nomination for the Songwriters hall of Fame, by the way, Chuck.
Well, they know the songs. You know, I'm. I'm thankful for it, though. I got. I got. I got an award last week for Stacks Records and down in Memphis, and I was saying hello to all the Job Morant fans and all that, so I appreciate my awards. I'm finding a place for so many of it, but it's not about me. It's about. About making rap music and hip hop very much legitimate. Like rock is. So that's been my fight all my life. I'm in the trenches with my people, Q Tip and cp, the franchise online and the Knicks Nation. And this is a good time, but my old self is enjoying one game at a time. I make no predictions and I try to keep an even key, but I'm very honored that you guys asked me to talk. And I will go in the back and then try to go to my app, bringthenoiseapp.com and try to make that hopefully as big as Twitter. X.
Alan Rosenberg
All right, well, enjoy the run, man. Thanks for giving us a couple.
Chuck D
Thank you, Chuck.
Don Hahn
Appreciate you.
Chuck D
Thank you.
Alan Rosenberg
That's Chuck D. He brought it, man. I mean, listen, listen, that.
Don Hahn
Just so you guys know, like, I. I love him. I've gotten to know him over for a long time and. And that's a bit of a taste of about maybe midnight, 12:30pm he just, you know, all of a sudden, here come the texts. And it's. He has so much passion for this team and it's the way he can turn phrases as you could hear him. And I'll just sit there and read. And I. I try to keep up with the train of thought, but his mind just works so fast. And so that. That right there is a bit of an exact. I. I sat back and listened because it's like, yeah, I've been in this conversation.
Alan Rosenberg
No, let him go, man. It was fun. I mean, I. Again, I stand by unethical being over the top.
Chuck D
Yeah, I still don't agree with that.
Alan Rosenberg
But hey, if you got that kind of a reaction, I'll do it again. I'm not going to apolog is brought to you by Television Irish Whiskey because when it's game time, fellas, it's oh boy.
Don Hahn
Sorry. Even better.
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, he keeps the old school there. The Mets continue their series with the Pirates coverage immediately following us here on 8:80am at 6:30. And then the Yankees and the Mariners continue their series in Seattle at 9:40 telemore. Do the original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Telemore Dew or try the new Telemore Dew. Honey. During today's action, glasses up to enjoying Telemore Dew responsibly.
Don Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Chuck D
I didn't listen to anything you just said.
Don Hahn
Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. Good stuff.
Chuck D
One of the great records ever made.
Don Hahn
Did you guys see what I texted in the group?
Chuck D
Yeah, by the way. And, but for the record, had he known it would have probably been worse.
Don Hahn
Just tremendous. I love him. I love them. I don't want to read it out.
Alan Rosenberg
To you guys, but that fumbling.
Don Hahn
Just love them.
Chuck D
He doesn't live here anymore. He doesn't listen to you?
Don Hahn
No, he listens. He does.
Alan Rosenberg
Where does he live now?
Don Hahn
La.
Chuck D
I don't think he listens. If he, if he. Allen, if he listened, he knew he was talking to.
Don Hahn
Yeah, no, no, I don't mean he listens like regularly religiously. But he is. He. When he's in New York. He has told me during the show if we're talking about a topic that's interesting to him.
Alan Rosenberg
But you know, it's not like we identify ourselves constantly. Maybe we should considering the text.
Chuck D
I don't know. By the way, Al, tell. Tell him one was tell him it was me and see how that goes over.
Don Hahn
Oh no, I told him it was you. He had, you know, he just laughed at himself.
Chuck D
But listen, he came out a little hot. But in the end it turned out to be a really compelling all over the place kind of full Nick conversation. Dug it.
Alan Rosenberg
No, it was. It was good stuff. You just let him roll.
Don Hahn
No, it's. And the way he turns phrases is great but his, his whole thing was reacting to. Because his tweets last night, you know, he was, you know, he was drunk on Nick's juice right for the win and he was getting Heat for what he was saying and I guess so he was feeling a certain way because, I mean, I just, like, I barely got the text to him, like, you know, you want to jump on about your. And he goes, which one? The one about karma? Yes. Like, like, yeah.
Chuck D
So he had to, he had to know the time and went, really? That was just bad time.
Alan Rosenberg
But, but the thing you could tell.
Don Hahn
It was cathartic for him. Like he needed to get that out.
Alan Rosenberg
But in fairness, and I'm glad he brought it up, is that that was in a conversation he was having with a bunch of Celtic fans. Like imagine that you're going at like Alan and I would like Mets, Yankees and we're kind of just going at each other. And then you just arbitrarily just took one of the comments we had and just posted it up there for the world to see.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Alan Rosenberg
Not knowing the back and forth, you'd be like, oh my God. And I'm sure, you know, he's. Now he's going to double down on the whole unethical thing, but he probably figured in that moment I'm just going after Celtic fans. I don't care. I hate them. I hate their team. I'm going to call them unethical. And now he's got to defend that comment to a bunch of. To the world who only saw that one tweet. And because he's. Chuck D. Doesn't feel like he has to back down to anybody, didn't walk it back and tried to own it. So not again.
Don Hahn
It's the style of play that he is against. He doesn't like it.
Alan Rosenberg
If I had to guess, he's not a fan of the general NBA because that's the way the game is played. Now if he's going to go after the Celtics, there's a lot of other teams he could go after. That's kind of the way the game is right now. And I. One of the reasons I like the Knicks as much as I do is because they seem to be the anti NBA. They seem to do the opposite of what all the other teams do to be successful. And that makes it fun.
Don Hahn
So that's why you want to root for him, because you want that to win over the current way people play. It's almost. And I said, I've said this before with you guys. I firmly believe this and I really think that this needs to stick. The Celtics to the NBA are the Yankees to Major League Baseball. The Yankees refuse to play any other way. This is who we are. Home runs are Nothing. It's fun when we hit them. Just like the threes for the cell. It's fun when they hit them, but when they don't, man, you look bad, it looks bad. And you can lose games you shouldn't lose, but because you're stubborn with it and you refuse to change it and Brian Cashman refuses to do it, this is what we believe in. This is our analytics team. Well, I'm telling you, the Celtics are the same thing. They have analytics guys. Their numbers tell them if we do this all the time, it's going to work out more than it's not. And when we lose, it's not because we did anything wrong. It's because the numbers tell you you're going to also lose at times. It's. This is. It's the same exact mentality. And if you're a baseball fan, you can't love that. You can't love the way they play because you love the team that does get on base and get them over and get them in. You love the guys who can bunt, who can hit opposite field, who are, you know, are all about just making contact and all those things that used to make baseball fun, but those teams don't always win.
Alan Rosenberg
There's not a baseball comp because I don't think that team exists. But the Knicks are like if there was a baseball team out there that had their slugger bat 4th and their speedster lead off and they're all their pitchers goal seven innings, you know, and just completely throw the analytics out. I'm sure the. Listen, I'm sure the lead off batter.
Don Hahn
Bunts to get the first.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah. Small ball and all that stuff. So they kind of just go. And they kind of buck the trend, which makes it a lot of fun. This Yankee starting lineup is brought to you by Certa Pro Painters. Now, the Mariners have their lineup out for the 9:40. The Yankees do not. So we're just going to go with the starting pictures. Max Freed's going to go for the Yankees. He's 60 with a microscopic 1.05 earner on average. And Brian Wu is going for Seattle. Wu is 4 and 1 with a 3.25 earner, an average. Whoo. He's actually. He's actually pitching well. Freed's got 47 strikeouts. Who's got 44. So he's been good for Seattle. That's the Yankee starting pictures brought to you by Certapro Painters. When choosing a painting professional for your home or business, the choice is simple. Choose happy. Choose Certapro Painters. Let's get back to the phones. I'm sure Chuck D stirred a lot of stuff up. Hopefully they. They play that out in Boston. I'm sure they'd love it. Let's go to Dave in East Meadow. You're on espn, New York. What's up, Dave?
Chuck D
Let's go.
Alan Rosenberg
All right, five, baby.
E
So listen, a couple of points with last night's game. Alan, I think you remember In Detroit, Monica McNutt, she was talking in the postgame how everybody filled their role. It was the same thing last night. That's my first point. I mean, JB did his thing, but Bridges stepped up. And I mean, when McBride actually hits his first two out of his first three shots, he usually plays well.
Chuck D
Mitch.
E
Phenomenal. Towns. At least he rebounded. He needs to actually learn how to post up on guards without throwing an elbow. But I mean, and we talked. You talked about on your show yesterday how we had to get everybody off early and get balanced scoring, and we did it. And how many times do we have an athlete, a premier athlete, talk about things, all the cliches about what has to be done. Like Ewing tried to. And a lot of times they don't back it up. JB backed up every thing he talked about after the previous game. And that one offensive rebound in traffic, we laid it up underneath on kp, left handed. To me, that was his signature play last night. That was that little bit of extra.
Don Hahn
Yeah, I loved that one. It just got under him and it just to be able to finish there. I thought the one that really resonated was he had, I think Horford and he had him on skates. And Horford tried to overstep to get in front of him. And Jalen Brunson did this step back shot with Brown, I think, or White behind him, trying to defend.
E
Yes, right behind him on the left wing.
Don Hahn
Yeah. And he just drilled it. And that was one of those, like just. Yeah, he's in his bag. That, that was. That was special. But, you know, that was one of my keys for. For the game is you can't have any passengers in a game like that last night. Everybody in the box score has to have contributed something. And when you look at the box score, you can say that everybody did something. Adenobi had a 20 point game, you know, Bridges had a 20 point game. Brunson went for 39, Towns 23 and 11. Even Hart with his foul trouble. Only six points, but he still had nine rebounds, five assists. You know that it's all the little things. You're looking for from everybody. And off the bench, you got, you know, Deuce and. And Mitchell Robinson. Mitch Robinson, eight rebounds. Didn't get. Didn't. Didn't take free throw, which was nice, but everybody did something. You can't have passengers when you get this deep into the playoffs.
Alan Rosenberg
Let's go to Stephen Booten. You're on espn, New York.
F
Hi, guys. Thanks for taking the call. So, Alan.
Chuck D
What? What? Whatever. Did they ever mention anything about OG's hammy? Because when he went for that dunk and then he was running back, he kept grabbing at us. Was it just a cramp or.
Don Hahn
He said it never got mentioned. Yeah, og, after the game, said that. He said he felt.
Chuck D
He.
Don Hahn
It felt weird. He had a weird feel, like if something happened. And it felt weird. But he said, but I'm fine, because.
Chuck D
You know, I did come back for that dunk. I was texting my buddy. I text my buddy. I said.
Don Hahn
I said, you went down.
Chuck D
He's like, no.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
F
And then what did.
Don Hahn
I got the rest of the game? I mean, he was. He was very good the rest of the game, so.
Chuck D
Well, they got going on in that training room. Every time somebody goes back there, when.
F
Jalen gets his ankles retaked, when he.
Don Hahn
Comes back, it's Miyagi.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Chuck D
That's it.
Don Hahn
That's all. Yeah. I mean, what. I don't know what to say.
Alan Rosenberg
No. Because these guys want to play. Everybody's banged up at this particular point of the season, Right?
Don Hahn
Yeah. Towns has that finger that. Remember we saw him say in game three, it's broken, or I broke it. And yet then he went 10 for 11 in the paint with nine dunks or whatever it is. Nine. Nine for nine on dunks and layups.
Alan Rosenberg
Got it done.
Don Hahn
How'd that feel?
Alan Rosenberg
Let's go to Merv in Winfield. You're on ESPN New York. So, Merv.
Chuck D
Yeah. How are you doing? As you sit on hold, like you guys say, some other stuff comes up.
G
But real quick, the. The thing about the Celtics, I think.
Chuck D
It'S more the coach than the players. Like, he just talks to people with the arrogance and like that.
I won't argue on that. I will not argue on that.
Alan Rosenberg
His.
Chuck D
He has a. He has a weird tone.
Yeah. As far as this team, man, it's. It's like old school 90s.
Don Hahn
You got you.
Chuck D
You know, you, like, love every player on a team that they do and just enjoying the ride. And I listen to the radio more than, you know, wherever I start watching or listening game, that's where I Stick to. Because the whole jinx it thing, which I know it doesn't exist, but it does in your head.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, listen, if as a fan, you got to do what you got to do, man, whether it exists or not, if you believe it's real, then it's real.
Don Hahn
Is there something wrong with me yesterday? Please don't answer that until you hear this part, because I'm sure you'd say yes just right away. Yesterday, I didn't sit in my usual seat. So. So for game three, I sat in my usual. The sideline. See, I was sitting next to Lisa Salters, and obviously that it went terribly wrong. Like, that game was just brutal. So. So game four, when I. When I went in the building, I said, I'm not going to sit there, but I'm gonna be in the vicinity because there's really nowhere else for me to go. So I was in the tunnel, and it. It started to get better, and so I was like, all right, this is good. And then they went 12o to finish the first quarter, and I walked away like, okay, I can't stay here now. So I circle around and I went to the other tunnel, and I went to the other side. You know, where alumni row is, where all the alumni are. And I saw a couple guys said hello, and I stayed there. And the second quarter got a little better, but it wasn't right. And it was still nine at the half. Nine or eleven, whatever it was. And I said, okay, this is definitely not good. And I got to a point where I said, that's it. I'm out of the building. I left the building. Where'd you go?
Alan Rosenberg
Across the street.
Don Hahn
Just. Yeah, that's it. I'd left. I usually would have waited to the end of the third. I left the building. I said, that's it. Like. Like there's no spot that feels right. I got to get out of here. That's how I couldn't sit. I couldn't. Like, it was one of those games that you just felt, like an energy that. I could not sit in that for that whole night. Couldn't sit. And then I finally said, I gotta get out of the building. Like, something's not right. It didn't feel right. And then, of course, second half was so much better, and unfortunately, I had to watch it on tv, even though I was literally right across the street from the building.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, and that's the way you're gonna consume it tomorrow. So I guess that's good news, right?
Chuck D
Exactly.
Alan Rosenberg
And now if there's a game six, so we don't want you even near the building. How about that?
Don Hahn
Well, I might even. I might have to be in the building, though. Might have to.
Chuck D
Can you believe we could be looking. I mean, listen, I know they have to win, and it's. I still. I still think it's going to be work. They're going to have to really, you know, win another game here.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Chuck D
But I can't believe we could be staring a Knicks Pacers conference final in the face. And. And Don, I guess you know what I relate to about you. This is this series, like we can give a hard time to me, you know, about calling me a fraud. Now I'm down for a good time, but it's sort of on some level, almost the way people give you a hard time for being a guy with a devil's tattoo who now is the voice of the Rangers.
Alan Rosenberg
Right.
Chuck D
At a certain point, maybe 18 championships is a good time. As much as I would love to see the Celtics win, and it's great. You got to start rooting for yourself. And of course, as much as the Celtics are a lot of fun to root for, I'm not from Boston. I just fell in love with that Larry Bird and that team a long, long time ago. Reggie Lewis, I was really a Kevin Gamble guy. I'll be honest with you. But in this moment, for us to get to have that as a show, as a new show, Don Hanna, Rosenberg, that we've been building, where Don and I have now, you know, been matched up with Allen, we have this trifecta going to this year potentially get to have. This is so cool. I'll be honest. In addition to all the Knicks people in my life, I'm rooting for. Me, too. This is fantastic, Don.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah. Well, Larry did take a job with the Pacers, right. I'm sure the Pacers played the Celtics while he was the coach.
Chuck D
And he did not root for the Celtics.
Alan Rosenberg
No, he did not.
Chuck D
He rooted for himself.
Alan Rosenberg
He rooted for his team and himself.
Chuck D
And every time the Knicks play the next day, win, lose, your draw. It's usually win or lose. We come and do a show that gets a lot of ears on it. It's a lot of fun to do.
Alan Rosenberg
It's interesting. It's an interesting.
Chuck D
And it certainly does help that this team is, let's be honest, it's a very charming team.
Don Hahn
And they have a very, like, have a star, you know. Again, I love Carmelo Anthony, but I don't think Melo was loved universally by Knicks fans when he played here.
Alan Rosenberg
No, no, no.
Chuck D
He was.
Don Hahn
I think you'd be hard pressed to find a single Knick fan that says, yeah, I don't. I don't really rock with Brunson.
Chuck D
No, no, that's not a thing. That is not a thing. That is so true.
Alan Rosenberg
Unless you were one of those guys that. That hated that they got them and just didn't want to let it go because there are people like that at.
Chuck D
This point, you'd look so. And I'm not suggesting, by the way, in saying that none of us are saying that that's fair to Carmelo and.
Don Hahn
And personality wise, Carmelo, it's not. But there were guys who hated the trade. There were. There are fans who just hated the trade.
Chuck D
Yeah. But then they leaned into play. They made it sound personal with Carmelo too. And it was completely undeserved. Everyone universally agrees Carmelo is a great guy who never deserved that.
Don Hahn
Right.
Chuck D
But it's funny how people are. And the public is fickle. One guy they may not love. One guy they love is Jalen Brunson. He is right now, hands down. When we did that, that poll, was he the number one most popular?
Don Hahn
I believe he was.
Chuck D
He was one. Right.
Alan Rosenberg
I'd have to look it up because.
Chuck D
Judge has a split. Soto Lindor have splits.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Chuck D
Jalen Brunson is the guy.
Don Hahn
There is no split.
Alan Rosenberg
No, it's. And it just gets getting bigger and bigger by the game.
Chuck D

Alan Rosenberg
Game time. Drama is brought to you by. I tell them I do Irish whiskey because when it's game time.
Chuck D
It'S challenging. Was it a drop I got.
Alan Rosenberg
It's. It's been really poor today. Okay, I'm just gonna say I don't like to. I don't like to attack people, but what about. What about soiled ourselves today with the Tullamore do?
Chuck D
All right, try it again.
Alan Rosenberg
No, it's Tully Time.
Chuck D
How about that?
Don Hahn
Hmm?
Chuck D
How about it's Tolly time?
Don Hahn
That's.
Alan Rosenberg
I like that one.
Don Hahn
I'll take. You didn't say Marty McFly.
Alan Rosenberg
We soiled ourselves, but we still found a way to chuckle about it. The Mets continue to play the Pirates tonight and that coverage will begin right after us at 6:30 on 8:80. And the Yankees will be in Seattle to take on The Mariners at 9:40.
Chuck D
Seattle more.
Alan Rosenberg
Do the original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Telemore do or try the new Telemore do, honey. During today's action, glasses up to enjoying Telemore do responsible. We got ENN coming up at 6 so let's hammer the phone calls, fellas. Let's go to Jonathan lla. It's always fun to talk to him. Hey, Jonathan, how are you?
G
Hi, guys. Go New York. Go New York.
Chuck D
Go.
G
I guess Dave in the morning wasn't really happy with me doing that. As a Laker fan, I mean, I'm so happy that the Knicks have a 31 lead over those hated Boston Celtics. So Alan, and to all of. And to all of New York and all the New York Knicks fans listening, congratulations and I really hope you guys make the NBA Finals. And dang it, win it. Win it for New York, man. You guys deserve it. And guys, I want to win on the. On the Rob Manfred thing. Honestly, I think that. I mean, I'm a big baseball fan in general. I'm 35 years old. I know past, present. And it's just, it's. It's a clown move. Seriously, this guy, first of all, what he did with the Astros and then put tucking in the Ohtani, you know, big old the gambling thing and now this. He waited till Pete Rose, I guess, passed away. Pete Rose said it in his documentary. He doesn't even want if he. If it's gonna be. And when he's dead, he'd rather not even be in the hall of Fame. And now him doing that, it's like a disrespectful move. Seriously. But I'm tired of this guy. I really hope they get rid of them. I know not. I know it's not gonna happen, but I think it was just, excuse my language, with a stupid clown move, what he did. But it is what it is, man. That's what we gotta live for.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, Peter.
G
Sorry for your Celtics brother. Go New York. Go New York.
Chuck D
Seems authentic at all.
Don Hahn
No, Lakers fans always find a way to make it about them.
Alan Rosenberg
But. But I do get A Laker fan kind of climbing on the Knicks bandwagon.
Chuck D
That makes sense.
Alan Rosenberg
There's a rivalry there with the Celtics, right?
Chuck D
That's the rivalry right there.
Don Hahn
Absolutely.
Alan Rosenberg
Let's go to Danny on Long Island. You're on espn.
Chuck D
Real quick, Danny, one sec. Just on the note of the Shoeless Joe thing, Keith Overman with a funny tweet. He said, funny thing. A White Sox fans elected Pope. And five days later, Shoeless Joe Jackson suddenly becomes eligible for the Baseball hall of Fame. Danny, what do you got, buddy?
F
That's actually the first thing over and said that was funny in quite some time.
Chuck D
Show your bias there.
F
We'll leave it at that was a great day, a great sports day in New York City. Everybody's happy except for the 2370 self identified new York Net fans who hook themselves onto the wrong team. I mean, they gotta sit this one out. Imagine being a transplanted New Yorker and you said, okay, what am I going to Rooster? You know what, I'll pick the Nets. And now all of a sudden you got, you have to sit through this. But you know what? You talk about Game 5. You got to win Game 5, guys, because you look at these players going down all over the league. It's only a week ago that Jalen Brunson was walking off the field during every game for an ankle. You, you can get hurt playing these games. They're very physical. The rest, the less games you play, of course it's better. You hope they win and the other series goes seven. Let those guys get knocked around, twist a few ankles. Everybody's on, you know, on adrenaline and run. You need that. You can't afford to be playing these games. Guys get hurt. But I really want to hear from today. As I was walking my dog yesterday and the great Spike from St. Petersburg called up and said, I see no avenue for the Nick to win tonight and no possible way that they win the series. I love you, Spike. You're going to get buried in your Springwell jersey or actually married in your Springwell jersey. Buried in your Clyde jersey, which is, which is not a bad jersey. It's not a choice to be, to be married in any jersey. And quite frankly, I want to see my wife's look when I tell her that's what I'm going to choose to wear. But you can't really come back to that because as a fan, I'm always optimistic. I always have to find out how we can do this, what has to happen. And there's always a way, there's always an answer always. You know, sometimes it's not going to happen, but you got to at least convince yourself because why bother watching the game? But you know, there's no avenue at all.
Alan Rosenberg
Danny, he said it. So what do you have to say for yourself? Spike?
H
I have to say I respect Danny. I was just telling my wife and Danny came on that I hadn't called for quite a while and Danny said it was good to hear my voice because we have law enforcement in both families and I called to apologize. I sent each one of you a message. I didn't see a path, I didn't think there was a path and I was dead ass wrong. So Danny, you nailed me on that and now I'm going to turn it all around and say I see a very viable path. And how is it poetic justice if it's going to be the Indiana Pacers? So a great call, Danny, you made me feel good and I'm just telling my wife that guy said such nice things about me and this all worked out well. Peter, you're a Celtic fan. I'm really feeling bad for jt but I understand he had the surgery and let him come back better and stronger. He put on one of the all time great playoff performances ever. Kept moving further out, further out, further out and he didn't waver. It's just an unfortunate accident.
Alan Rosenberg
But. But Spike, you're probably very, very happy to be wrong as the Knicks do now have, as he put it, a.
Chuck D
Viable oh, they have a path already.
Alan Rosenberg
To a championship or at least out of this series. Don Hanna, Rosenberg enn is next on 880 ESPN New York and ESPN New York app.
