Peter Rosenberg
this is the Don Han and Rosenberg podcast.
Don LaGreca
That sounds like heaven to me.
Peter Rosenberg
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers. Oh, yeah, baby. Don han and rosenberg503 on this beach bash eve. Wednesday, July 1st, bar a tomorrow, the spot to be to hang out with all of us. Alan is off for the day. He'll be back, of course, for tomorrow's big show. Michael broadcasting one to three. We're on three to seven. Everyone will be around. Everyone hanging out. We don't know. Do we have any updates on the il Don,
Don LaGreca
What I. What I can. What I can gather from a conversation earlier. Hopefully I'm not speaking out of school. It could affect the. An aspect of the events tomorrow, but not the participation, if you understand what I'm saying. I think said person will be there, but maybe not doing something that has been promoted he's supposed to do, if you get what I'm saying.
Peter Rosenberg
I do. And I do.
Don LaGreca
Because you know.
Peter Rosenberg
Because I know.
Steve Cohen
Yeah.
Anthony
Well, Rick told everybody today that his back is. Is in bad shape. So I think everybody can put two and two together and figure out there's a chance that he might not be able to play goalie tomorrow.
Don LaGreca
Well, I didn't know he mentioned it this morning. I listened this morning. I didn't hear it. I just heard that apparently he went away, Peter, to the islands.
Peter Rosenberg
Which islands?
Don LaGreca
In the Caribbean.
Anthony
Saint Barts, I believe.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah, Saint Bart's on the picture. Yeah. Saw him and Nick Sirianni and apparently,
Don LaGreca
yeah, he befriended Nick Ceriani, which now caused a bit of a problem between he and Dave because Dave can't. Dave can't fathom that there is a world where a person could coach the team that you hate and be a nozzle as a coach, but maybe, just maybe away from the field, might be a halfway decent person. Doesn't think that that's remotely possible.
Peter Rosenberg
Now listen, I wouldn't know because I probably wouldn't say anything if I saw Nick Sirianni, but if I ended up in conversation and he turned out to be a great guy, I mean, and also, why would Rick Care.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, he's a Jet fan.
Peter Rosenberg
It makes no. No difference at all. So, I mean, listen, it's a great bit for the radio. Like, I love the idea of Dave now, of Rick now, actually kind of getting into the Eagles. Like, if he really gets close with Sirianni, that would just be great. Radio don't. And why not? You're a Jets fan anyway. Like, make the Eagles your second favorite team if you're Rick. That's just.
Don LaGreca
He said that. Well, wait, no. The way that. What Rick said was, what would be wrong with them being my NFC team? Like, obviously, the jets are his number one team, but is there anything wrong with maybe having a team in the other conference that's not a rival and saying, listen, I got to know the coach, seems like a nice guy. I'm going to root for them, too. That's not fraudulent behavior. If they, if they became your team and you dropped the jets, that's being a fraud. But I think everybody is open to having a second favorite team that's outside your conference or league.
Steve Cohen
Right.
Don LaGreca
There is there. There isn't another team you have an affection for even slightly. In hockey. You're a Ranger in hockey?
Anthony
No, no.
Don LaGreca
So you don't like. You know, I think the Sharks are a decent. You know, I don't mind if they do well, not when they're at the Garden or when they play the ra.
Anthony
But you know what?
Don LaGreca
I like their uniforms. They seem like a cool team.
Peter Rosenberg
There are teams in football because I, you know, football is my hockey for Anthony.
Don LaGreca
Right?
Peter Rosenberg
I'm with Anthony. I don't have a team in football that I care for in any way, but there are teams that I hate less than other teams, for sure. Like, I don't hate the Packers.
Anthony
I enjoyed watching the cup this year. I was not rooting for anybody in particular. I just like watching hockey. Peter likes watching football. Even if the commanders are out, he's watching the games. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
I might. I might prefer, like, if whoever's playing the Patriots or whoever's playing the Chiefs, I'm probably. Or whoever's playing the Eagles, I'm probably rooting for them. But, you know, but I got to
Don LaGreca
know John Tortorella and I'm a fan.
Peter Rosenberg
That's torts to you and me.
Don LaGreca
And I rooted for Vegas because of Torts. Now, obviously, I wasn't going to root for Carolina. Got no love for Carolina, but. And anywhere Torts goes, as long as it's not, you know, a division rival or a team that I don't like for whatever reason, I would probably root for that team to do well, not over my team, but if Torts ended up in. Calgary, I'd be like, why? I wouldn't mind seeing Calgary do some stuff. Obviously not when they play the Devils, but, you know, I wouldn't mind. What would be wrong with that? Would that make me a fraud, Peter?
Peter Rosenberg
No. No. I think it's a fraud to enjoy another team that's not a rival of your team. Is fine.
Anthony
Days are Rick's already won because Dave's discussed it with Rick for even being in his presence. So it's a. It's already one. It's already working.
Don LaGreca
I got to be honest with you.
Anthony
All right, well, this is a friend.
Don LaGreca
Listen, nobody hates more than I do. I'm a big hater. But if I ran into somebody that I hated through sports, right. Like, obviously, I'm trying to think of. I'll tell you, I grew up a Devil fan, so I hated the Rangers, and rightly so, as a Devil fan. You hate the Rangers. Right. But then I start working for the Rangers. I get to meet Adam Graves, who's one of the salt of the earth. Couldn't be a nicer guy. Mike Richter, tremendous human being. Brian Leach, Mark Messier, terrific people who treated me well, and I. And. And got to know them. And you know what? I became friendly with them and proud to say that I know them. So I'm. I'm supposed to just ignore the fact that they're great human beings because they happen to play for a team that was a rival of my team when I was growing up? That's just stupid. Honestly. Isn't that stupid?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. I mean, listen, I think some people might be surprised by this because they think that you'd be quick to call any of this fraud. But I like that you're not. You're surprising me here.
Don LaGreca
Well, now, listen. Now, they would say, well, you're working for the Rangers. Of course you're gonna be nice to them. Yeah, but I didn't have to, like, I didn't have to tell you that they were great people. I would interview them when I had to interview them, and I would talk to them when I had to talk to them. But to sit there and not have a relationship with them because they happen to be on the rival team. I'm robbing myself of spending time with a quality person. Like Adam Graves is a. I'm telling you, is a tremendous human who I've talked to. He's given me advice as a father. The two human beings talking to each other. Am I supposed to shut all that, the possibility of all that down? Because, oh, he's Adam Graves. He scored the overtime goal in game five against the Devils in 97. I hate him. I can't have a relationship with him. Then I'm doing myself a disservice.
Peter Rosenberg
I would, I'm being serious now. I would befriend someone on any. If I met them in real. Like I'm, I'm hosting an event and they say, hey, Peter, we need you to interview Nick Sirianni and, and Saquon Barkley for this Nike. Which, by the way, I used to do for Nike.
Anthony
Sure.
Peter Rosenberg
I used to, I used to do so many interviews for Nike. That's how I interviewed some of the, how I know Kevin Durant. It's how I drop. It's how I interviewed Kobe Bryant. It's how I interviewed Paul George. Yeah, you're supposed to keep hitting the drums. I, I, I, I, I've interviewed LeBron James. I mean, listen, that'. Bobby.
Don LaGreca
This is a marathon drop. I mean, this is this machine gun dropping that Peter's doing. But it all, it's all for the purpose of the point.
Anthony
But you know, Dave would say, no, that's the point we're making.
Don LaGreca
Not.
Peter Rosenberg
Let me, let me just say this real quick. So I would of course, become friends now. You guys remember. You know, we actually haven't talked, spoken very recently. And I actually saw. I got to reach out to him. I heard he got engaged. But you guys know I'm tight with Victor Cruz. Yes, go ahead, Jacob. When, when Cruz was active, dude, we used to like hang out. And then he'd get me tickets to the Redskins games. And literally one year, Cruz scored the game winning touchdown to beat us in overtime. You probably remember, Don, it was the RG3 here. Yes, and the Giants beat us in overtime. And while I'm stuck in parking lot traffic, Cruz calls me on speakerphone, screaming from the locker room, I should not be his friend. He's a human. This is a real life human being. Like, we're having a sports.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, but you know, it's fun.
Peter Rosenberg
Dave Rothenberg.
Don LaGreca
That's right. Like he could not give human monies.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Don LaGreca
To Danhausen because he's not human. His money's not human monies.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it's not human monies. You're right. That's the interesting part.
Don LaGreca
So, but listen, we digress, but I just thought that that was.
Anthony
Dave really doesn't want to do this watch party with you, Peter.
Don LaGreca
That's another thing.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, wait. What?
Anthony
Not you, not you. It could be, it could be the Pope. It doesn't matter. He. He doesn't want to watch a Giant game outside. Yes. He can't do it. He said he's gonna punch you.
Don LaGreca
Oh, then you know what? He'd get his ass kicked, I'll tell you that. You know what? By me.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right. That's right.
Don LaGreca
Not that Peter couldn't handle himself, but Peter wouldn't have the chance to handle himself. You should have raised his fist to Peter.
Anthony
David.
Don LaGreca
Be out cold.
Anthony
Peter, when you, when you hear how they talk about this in the morning, it's like you're asking Dave to drive cross country to do like a two hour radio hit.
Peter Rosenberg
First of all, I love where this is going because obviously what this is going to. Don, this is going to be amazing. We have some exciting stuff I believe hopefully unfolding here for the radio station in the future. And this is going to be a great event to hang our hat on because obviously the promo machines already rolling. We're months away. It's July 1st. We are talking about a wash. Anthony, can you give me the exact date? We're talking a Washington Commanders New York Giants Thursday nighter. I believe like you dream about smells like, smells like a Thursday.
Anthony
Is that the November 12th vehicle? Yes, November.
Peter Rosenberg
November 12th. So we're talking week, week eight, you know, something like that. Week ten.
Anthony
Yeah, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And Dave Rothenberg is. The plan is, I believe, Dave Rothenberg, Rick D. Pietro, Peter Rosenberg, Don Legreca, a 2 on 2, a 2v2 watch. Along with the idea being, it really being. Listen, Don's obviously a Giants fan too, but Don and I know him and I could watch a Giants Commanders game together and it wouldn't make a difference. So it's really, it's me versus Dave with one person on each of our side. That's basically what's shaping up here.
Don LaGreca
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
And Dave is freaking out because as you guys know, he has to be like huddled in a corner by himself to watch a regular season Giants.
Don LaGreca
And listen, I will tell you this. I have said, I've been on record, I would rather watch the Giants by myself, especially if it's a big game. I don't like being around other people, but I'm also a professional being asked by my radio station to participate in an event that's good for the radio station and good for everybody involved. Guess what? I'm a professional first and foremost. I'm gonna go do it. And he's being unprofessional by not doing it. You Tell him that you can't sit there and watch a giant game on YouTube for the betterment of the radio station. You got to tap out.
Anthony
He says he can't be responsible for what happens.
Don LaGreca
No, I'll tell you what, though. He doesn't have to worry about a damn thing because the second he gets out of line, he's unconscious. So it doesn't matter. Honestly, like, he can't control himself. He doesn't have to worry because the second he gets up, he's out. Matter of fact, he needs to be careful that he doesn't get punched by me, Peter, or Rick. He should not go just out of fear for his own life, because the guy is mental, he's unstable, and he's unprofessional.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, come on. You can't. Listen, I do not miss Washington football games. I've told you guys the stories. I'm talking about seasons, when they are, you know, 5 and 10 heading into the final week of the season. They're. They're 3 and 12, and I am going on a vacation to an island, and I'm spending the Sunday in my hotel room so I can watch a 3 and 12 football game. Play their final game of the year, you know, with Patrick Ramsey at quarterback. Okay, I've done it all. I'm a fan.
Don LaGreca
But you're also a professional talk show host that has an assignment and a
Peter Rosenberg
human being who's 46 years old. It's week 10, and we're gonna sit. By the way, it's not some bar where we don't know if we're gonna have a good view of the television. I understand all of the concerns. You want to be in a safe environment to watch your team that you love. We're watching it at our home, our radio station, with a giant television in front of us. It is as safe as can be. We're good to go. There's nothing to about. He's just a complete. And I say this respectfully, freak.
Don LaGreca
But I will tell you, would I choose to do this over just sitting in my man cave watching the Giants commanders. I would rather stay home, but I've been given an assignment.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, and by the way, this is a paid assignment. Just to be clear, it's paid. You know that.
Don LaGreca
No, I know that.
Peter Rosenberg
But if you were to ask me, would you rather watch a football game where your team's going to win or lose or occasionally. Every blue moon. I'm not even. Playoff game. Every blue moon. Watch a regular season game of your team and get paid a Few bucks to do it. Why not?
Anthony
It's fun. It's fun to. It's fun to talk about. Let's hear what Dave had to say.
Don LaGreca
You don't know how badly I don't want to do this. They want to take me out of
Peter Rosenberg
my normal habitat and they want me.
Don LaGreca
And it sounds like they're going to
Peter Rosenberg
force me against my will to watch
Don LaGreca
a Giants game during a couch cast.
Peter Rosenberg
Yep.
Don LaGreca
Here's the thing.
Peter Rosenberg
He was strong. Aren't you?
Don LaGreca
I want it to be understood if I start cursing, if I start taking off clothing, I think that's what people want to happen.
Anthony
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
But I'm not to blame at the
Don LaGreca
thing or right now taking right now.
Anthony
No, I feel.
Don LaGreca
It feels terrific.
Anthony
So if I.
Peter Rosenberg
If I. I'm telling you, whatever I do during that couchcast, I'm not to blame.
Don LaGreca
He's not stable. I mean, in all seriousness, he's not stable. I mean, we're talking about a regular season. It's week 10. The Giants might be one and eight.
Anthony
Don, now who's being.
Don LaGreca
I'm just saying I don't want to be one. I don't think they're going to be one and eight. But, like, he don't know. He can't control, honestly, because if he starts disrobing, he's getting smacked.
Peter Rosenberg
Now that's a drop. Now, Don, I want to explain something to everyone. Do you realize how old the man we're talking about is? Have you looked at Dave Rothenberg on camera? He's a gray beard. And I say that he is a gray beard. He's an older gentleman. You are. If in the olden days, back in the day, he would be considered an elder, he would be passing anytime. This would be considered. He lived a good life. His kids would be 30 years old already, you know, 35 years old, maybe. And his in his time would be coming to an end on Game of Thrones. He would be like a wise man who people come to sit with. And yet he's a child lunatic who said if I take off my clothes and if I hit my co worker, I cannot be to blame.
Don LaGreca
Oh, my. And here's the other thing, too. You know how I love Dave. I told pound for pound, I me too. He's pound for pound, the best guy on this radio station.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right.
Don LaGreca
Pound for pound, we are doing an event around the New York Giants. How would it look just for the reputation of our radio station moving forward if we did something involving the New York Giants? Dave wasn't involved. Honestly. Like, that's just ridiculous. He should take pride in the fact that he's the number one Giant fan, and there should be a moment where he's involved in it. It should make him sick not to be involved in it. If he's any kind of a professional.
Steve Cohen
Well.
Peter Rosenberg
And you know, how fun. There's. There's a lot of potential fun leading up between the two. Between me and him. And then depending what happens in the game the next day and the. You know, what if. Hey, Don, on the flip side, what if the Commanders and Giants are both good at that point? This is a really meaningful game. That'll be. Guess what? That'll get tons of views. It'll be good for the radio station.
Anthony
That would make me more scared now.
Don LaGreca
Never. Never mind all the tough guys, though, because, you know, I love Dave.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
Let's say he got up and just. He can't be held responsible. So he just takes. He hits me in the face. Am I supposed to go, well, he's just a big fan, you know, that's Dave. It's my. It's our fault for putting him in this situation. He just said, my habitat. He's an animal.
Peter Rosenberg
He's an animal. You know what? No. If that happens, if he stands up, you drop him right where he stands, Don. The only choice you have.
Don LaGreca
Listen, what I was. I was giving you an example of what am I supposed to do? No, I wouldn't. I wouldn't. I would react, and then I would be able to say, well, how am I supposed to react? I just got punched in the face. He is the. The equivalent to him is being asked to do his job out of his habitat is like, it offends him to the point where he can't be held responsible for his actions.
Peter Rosenberg
He's a wild animal. It's. It's. Honestly, we should all talk about with. Probably with our perspective, with our respective management and. And. And teams, whether we should even put ourselves in this situation.
Don LaGreca
There should be an intervention, honestly. Like. Like, how would that hold up in a quarter?
Peter Rosenberg
Like that.
Don LaGreca
Let's say he assaulted somebody during a Giant game, and he tells the judge, well, I'm sorry. I'm just a super Giant fan. It's their fault for putting me in that situation to begin with.
Anthony
I think you'll sign waivers. No, I think you'll have to sign waivers.
Peter Rosenberg
I like the idea of. The idea of this.
Steve Cohen
Be.
Peter Rosenberg
My wife just did something very funny. I like the idea of this being an intervention. Instead, we set it up. Maya, I'm doing a program. I'm doing the program right now. You got to relax. The radio program? No, I know it's an Internet only vehicle today, but it's still a radio program. I like the idea that we tell him he has a watch along and when he gets there it's an intervention. This would be amazing.
Don LaGreca
And then show that on you.
Peter Rosenberg
Now you got Dave Rothenberg's intervention live on YouTube.

Visit vikingpets.com protecting your home inside and out. So the Mets are losing five nothing as they play in the seventh inning. Season's pretty much over. The Yankees have lost seven straight games as they're in free fall right now. They had a bug going through the team and they've also, you know, still playing without judge and all that. We'll get to the Yankees in a moment, but Steve Cohen said he was going to speak and he spoke on the podcast called the show, an excellent podcast on baseball from John Heyman and Joel Sherman. And Steve said or talked about Stern's job status.
Steve Cohen
Listen, I'm in my conversations with him. He's incredibly thorough. You know, there aren't answers that I walk away and say, oh, you know, I don't agree with that, or being pretty buttoned down and knows what he's talking about. Okay, we're two and a half years into a contract. Everyone forgets. Does he get any credit for 24? Does that not count? We almost made it to the World Series, and that was just two years ago. So it's a mixed record, guy. I mean, I'm not gonna say it's going great, but it's too early to really make evaluations. And I feel really strongly that if we're gonna burn insurance, that's a terrible place to be. And every time you burn insurance, guess what? The next time nobody wants to come, is someone gonna put their career in your hands? If you're gonna be, you know, short term oriented and I have a contract, it's a five year contract, and we're going to live that contract out. Well.
Don LaGreca
So much there, Peter, first of all, and this, that was a minute of pure fury if you're a Met fan. So if he was looking to kind of calm the masses, he just insulted everybody. First of all, he talks about how thorough he is. And when he talks to him, Steve, how would you know you're not a baseball guy? If somebody was talking to me about quantum physics, I go, you know, that was really impressive. I didn't know any of that. And the guy could be lying through his teeth. But that's a minor point. The other point, 24. Well, 24 was pretty much with players that he didn't acquire. And even if he did, Peter, you know, who told you 24 doesn't matter? You know who it was that told you that 24 doesn't matter? Hmm. David Stearns did, because he blew it up. So why does he get credit for 24 when he told you it was a mirage. I got to get rid of these players. It doesn't count. So you're using 24 support of Stearns. You don't even have Sterns on your side of the argument. And he's going to live out the contract? Really? He's going to live out the contract? You're sitting on $23 billion, and this is the Hill you're gonna die on. Oh, it's gonna look bad if we fire people. Why does it look bad? He's halfway through the contract. He blew up the team. Team's on their way to losing 100 games. And he's gonna live out the contract, Peter. No matter what happens, he's gonna live out the contract. A contract he could easily buy David Stearns out of. And this is the Hill you're gonna die on. 23 billion. I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna waste it. I'm not gonna blow it up. Looks bad. Burn and Churn. What is this, a poker game? You burn and churn when the guy you got is not working. It's only burn and churn if you keep hiring the wrong people. But maybe eventually you hire the right person, you get back on track. But don't give me the ball. Oh, what about 24? No, 24 doesn't count because the guy you're trying to support doesn't agree with you. Otherwise he wouldn't have blown it up. Oh, my God. That's infuriating. But there's more. Now here's Steve Cohen. Is Stern staying through the whole contract?
Steve Cohen
I'm going forward with David as our leader. Listen, there's no guarantees in anything, okay? I'm going to evaluate this as we go along. And listen, David knows that it hasn't worked out the way he thought it would work out the way I thought it would work out. He'd be the first one to admit that he's made some mistakes. And this is a guy who's reflective. You know, what am I looking for? I'm looking for someone when, you know, when things are going great.
Don LaGreca
Hey, it's easy.
Steve Cohen
When things aren't going great, you know, are you reflective? Are you adaptable? Are you flexible? I believe David is. And I hear it. We'll figure out what changes that need to be made. But the change that's not going to be made is, you know, moving David out. At this point, I'm just not going to do it.
Don LaGreca
All right, so a little bit more of just, like, not guaranteeing he's going to Stay for the length, but he's not going anywhere. So at the end of this year, it'll be three years. So we'll see how it gets evaluated moving forward. But it looks like he will be the president of baseball operations at the start of next year, if there's a next year, which is obviously the cloud that floats over everything that we're talking about. But Peter, he. It's just so frustrating to just hear him talk about this guy as if it was a big coup getting him in the first place. This is. I keep repeating this. I haven't heard anybody else say it. I have no proof that I'm right.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay?
Don LaGreca
My conspiracy theory is Major League Baseball suggested him and Major League Baseball's telling him, don't fire. Why else would. Why else would he stand? He's not a baseball. And I'm not criticizing Steve for this, but just because you own a team doesn't mean you're a baseball savant, right? That you usually get recommendations from other people that are baseball savants on who you should hire. Who recommended David Stearns? Who is the one that's telling him, you got to stick with this guy? I think it's Major League Baseball. I think this is the insurance policy of him getting a team in the first place. I'm not going to spend like a drunken sailor. I got it. I got a GM from a small market who's going to run my team and not spend a lot of money and not have me spend money hand over fist. I think Major League Baseball recommended David Stearns, and I think it was under the pretense. If you want to own a team in baseball, you're going to have to prove to me that you're responsible financially here. Hire this guy. And I don't think he's. I'm not going to say he's not allowed to fire him, but I think he doesn't want to fire him for that reason. Am I reaching. Is this like, you know, second shooter level or am I onto something? Tell me, because if you think I'm a moron, tell me. I could take it. I'm not Dave Rothenberg. I won't punch you. Does my conspiracy theory theory hold water?
Anthony
I think Peter had to step away for a brief moment.
Don LaGreca
I understand that. I'll ask you, Anthony, am I a moron or am I onto something? Those are the two picks. Pick one.
Anthony
Well, you're certainly not a moron.
Don LaGreca
Thank you.
Anthony
I find it. I find this whole back and forth interesting. Look, I'm all for your owner doubling down and saying that he's going to stick with this guy. But I think the reasoning was kind of flawed.
Don LaGreca
Oh, for sure.
Anthony
And you can, you could say that it's only two and a half years into a five year contract. But we hear a lot about five years with Steve Cohen. He said in five years they were going to have a championship. That of course didn't happen, which is why David Stearns is here in the first place. And now he's saying we got to let this five year plan run out. Now I'm not going to disagree with him in saying if you fire people within every two years, years, you'll look crazy. Look at all the times we talk about. It was crazy how George fired people
Don LaGreca
as often as he did, but there was always somebody. Because you know what, Anthony? I'm going to be able to pay more than anybody else. So no matter how much you think, oh, I don't want to go be the Mets gm, look how Steve Cohen fires everybody. Yeah, like they would think he's a wacko. Firing the general manager after a hundred loss season. But you know what, no matter even if there is a salary cap or luxury tax or whatever, we end up pinpointing at the end of the lockout next year, it's not going to count against that. Hiring managers and general managers, he could pay them whatever they want. So if somebody doesn't want to come here, throw another mill on top of the table, guess what? He'll come. So I don't think you have to worry too much about that because as long as you're able to pay top dollar and you're in New York, somebody's gonna want the job.
Steve Cohen
All right?
Don LaGreca
If you're, if you're in Miami or you're in Milwaukee or you're in Kansas City and you're not spending money, then you might have a difficult time finding somebody that wants to take your money. But you know what with the Mets shouldn't be a problem. Now the other issue is Lindor and Soto and them not getting along. So Steve Cohen talked about the relationship between Lindor and Soto.
Steve Cohen
I don't see them going anywhere. And frankly, I think that's a story that was last year's story and that I actually am told and believe strongly that these guys are getting along much better. And so I just don't see that as an issue anymore. You know, listen, I'm lucky enough to have two high quality players like that. And you know, with the elimination of whatever issues there were last year, I mean, I'm Thrilled that they're on the team.
Don LaGreca
Where are they going? I am sure that if he could, Stearns would let go of Lindor. Soto's not going anywhere. We know that. And Lindor's not going anywhere because of how much money he's got left on his contract. So the idea that any of them are going anywhere is ridiculous. If anybody goes anywhere, it's Soto, when he can opt out. So, Peter, I know you had some connection problems there, but overall, it's amazing. When he tweets and when he speaks, it feels to me at least, like he makes matters worse.
Peter Rosenberg
I have not been impressed over the last. What are we at now, Don? It was Friday, right? It has not been a great five days in terms of saying things that are going to make you feel better if you're a Met fan. I did not. I felt that way. I felt that way when Stern spoke last week. I felt that way with what we heard from Cohen today. But isn't this kind of where we knew this thing was going, Don? I mean, I guess not. I guess there has to be some level of frustration if you're a Mets fan, if you believed that this was a temporary thing with Mendoza and then we'd get through the season and they'd really fully move on. Was that what your expectation was? So you thought this was. You thought Mendoza was just a holdover to get you to the off season and it was full start over?
Don LaGreca
Well, I thought that that would be on the table. No. If you fire Mendoza and then you don't get any better, then. Then obviously the problem must be the roster. Let the guy go who built the roster. But once they ended up pivoting to Green, and you heard at the press conference that, no, he's just going to be a placeholder. He's going to evaluate the roster, then we're going to hire somebody else. That's when I knew he wasn't going anywhere. Stearns. So all I needed to see was the press conference to know that he wasn't going anywhere. And. All right, whatever. That's your money. That's your team. You could do what you want. But you got to give me more tangible reasons why this guy still has a job. And don't tell the public. Well, 24. Yeah, 24. You came within two games of going to the World Series. I get that. That didn't buy Mendoza. Mendoza still got fired. What about 24 Mendoza? And also, where was Cohen at the press conference? Why wasn't this conversation had by the attended media the day that Mendoza Was let go. Why is this happening a week later on a podcast? Why wasn't he standing there with David Stearns firing Mendoza? Well, you want to get blood on his hands?
Peter Rosenberg
That's a very interesting point, too.
Don LaGreca
You know, I don't like the whole deal, man. I just don't like it. I think it stinks.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, I guess the argument would be, I guess the argument would be if, you know, you're definitively sticking with Stearns and he's the guy running your team, then he is the one who should be out there by himself firing the manager. Right. It kind of goes if, if Stearns ends up getting fired too, it actually then would speak more towards Cohen. Should have been the one out there. But if he's really still confident in Stearns, Don, I guess it does make sense.
Don LaGreca
Well, that would only make sense, Peter, if David Stearns owned the firing. But he said it was a collective. It was. It was a collaborative. That the organization decided it was time to let Mendy go so he wouldn't own it. So there's nothing wrong with Cohen being there. It was all collaborative. You're telling me the owner wasn't a part of that collaborative?
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Don LaGreca
You stand there and say, we fired Mendoza. We believe he was the one at fault. And then you can answer the questions, why is Stern still have a job? The media asks Stearns, why didn't you resign? So I would think Stearns would have gotten some questions about, why is David Stern still have a job? Did you not want to answer them? And he didn't go anywhere with a soft landing is John Heyman and Joel Sherman. So it's not that he's afraid to answer those questions, but was the image out there, hey, I think David Stearns is the one that's got to own this. Then why didn't David own it? And just say, I'm the one that let him go. I fired him. I hired him. I fired him. He didn't do that. So by the fact he didn't do that, I think it would have been better for Cohen to be there and answer the questions that he answered on the show the day that Mendoza was let go. And he didn't. Why? I don't know. Was he on a trip? But did he have another business thing going on? I have no idea. But I know that if I own the team, I would be there to answer those questions on a big day where you let your manager go, not go on a podcast a week later and then spew this nonsense. I mean, I'm enraged about the whole comment. Well, 24 then why did he blow the damn team up? I don't know if there was a follow up because John and Joel are very good at what they do, but my follow up would have been, well, your own general manager, your own president of baseball operations told you that it wasn't good enough because he blew the team up. And he probably wanted to blow the team up immediately and was probably Cohen. That said, don't, because Alonzo hit the biggest home run we've seen in 25 years of history. So we can't let him go.
Peter Rosenberg
But that's what makes letting him go the next year even dumber. It says to me, Don, that you basically felt like you had to keep him, keep it going another year because you were scared of the fans being too upset with you, but you still never really believed in him. You just sort of kicked the can down the road and of course ultimately got it wrong because they are not a better team now, minus Alonzo, minus Nimmo.
Don LaGreca
And again, I feel I'm a fan. But when I do these things, it's not. It's not just for me. It's for all the Met fans who don't have a voice that just probably hear these cuts and just are disgusted by it. As the Mets continue to lose games and become more and more irrelevant by

Another trade for the Rangers? According to Molly Walker of the Post, they are going to be trading will be Borgen to the Bruins in exchange for a 2027 second round pick and a conditional 2028 third round pick. Condition is that the Rangers receive Boston's 2028 second round pick if Boston makes the conference final in either 26:27 or 27:28 and Borgn plays 50% of the team's playoff games. That's a word salad for sure. But you know, getting Dersey in the tro check deal, getting Pedersen as well makes Borgin expendable. Plus you save a ton of money on the cap. Which is what every deal is about in both the NBA and the NHL is when you're trading players for picks. Yeah, you like the picks, but what you like is getting rid of that salary so you could be a little bit more active in free agency. Rangers clearly are in A rebuild and they're on their way to doing just that. We were talking about the Mets, Yankees. Peter, seven straight losses. Now this one was a little bit different in the fact that they're already playing without one third of your offense. Jones couldn't start because apparently there's a bug going through the team. And so there was a couple like Goldschmid couldn't play go, you know, Goldie couldn't play and Jones couldn't play. Jones eventually pinched hit a little bit later on in the game, but so they were really shorthand and they were too hit for most of the game. They were down to nothing. Got a couple of runs in the ninth, but then things got away from them in the top of the 11th inning. Bases loaded walk by Duvall. Then there was a throwing error after a base hit that ended up leading to an extra run on a two run single with the bases loaded. So it all kind of fell apart there. But you know, I've been leading the charge that there, there are excuses for this losing streak, but I can understand a Yankee fans frustration. It's a losing streak in which six of them came against Boston and Detroit who are grossly under.500. You know, I still think that they are trotting out their starting pitchers and hitting that should be able to do better than Owen. Seven over the last week. Now they got the day off and the Twins are coming in this weekend and they beat the Twins all the time. So if this losing streak continues, Peter, there's going to be some problems. So Judge kind of called him out saying they lack focus. I think Grisham has a chance to come back this weekend. So they are getting healthier, Peter. But seven straight losses is not nothing. And now you're starting to see the Rays. Who I don't. I. Anthony, are the Rays playing tonight? Are they off? But oh no, they got to be playing. It's Wednesday. I mean, check the score.
Anthony
They play Kansas City tonight, all right,
Don LaGreca
Or Kansas City tonight. During this seven game losing streak, the Razor won six in a row. All right, so they went from three games back to now all of a sudden three, four games up in the loss column. Now there's still plenty of time. It's only July 1st. But Peter, this is an issue. No matter how many excuses there are seven straight losses or seven straight losses, especially to the teams they're losing to. Not good. Oh, we got.
Peter Rosenberg
Sorry, I'm muted. I muted.
Don LaGreca
Sorry.
Peter Rosenberg
I say this and I mean this like this is authoritatively okay. If we can't talk Seriously, about a seven game losing streak and the implications. Let's not talk baseball.
Don LaGreca
I'm with you.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's wait till. No, Don, if someone. If it happens tomorrow at the beach bash, if we get a hey, hey, hey, nothing, then fine, cool. I Don, I got no issue. We'll wait till October 1st. But if we look at things in chunks, a seven game chunk where you're losing to terrible teams and is a reason, at very least for a conversation. I have to give you a quick update, Don.
Don LaGreca
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Because this tournament is absolutely insane. Senegal, I don't know if you have it on in your house. Senegal was up to nothing on Belgium like 15 minutes ago. It is now the 89th minute and it is 2.
Steve Cohen
2.
Anthony
Wow.
Peter Rosenberg
Belgium has made up a two goal deficit in the closing minutes here.
Don LaGreca
Well, and how significant is that? And this is coming from non soccer guy, but I know only one goal off of the greatest comeback in the history of the World Cup.
Peter Rosenberg
I thought you were going to say and the winner is waiting for the US in the next round.
Don LaGreca
Well, there's that too. But still, we looked it up last week and the biggest comeback in the history of the World cup is three. They were down two. Nothing made it to. They haven't won yet. But still, that's how significant that kind of comeback is. Ian's coming up at the top of the hour. Want to get some calls in 1-800-919-3776? Let's go to Charlie in Queens. You're on. Donna Rosenberg. What's up, man? What's up? How you doing, guys?
Anthony
How you doing?
Don LaGreca
Good, man. What do you got?
Peter Rosenberg
So I got two points.
Don LaGreca
One is to Mr. Judge Lagreca. Another fraud or Michelle's moment colleague of yours. I know she's from Missouri. She was claiming that, oh, let's say Jason Tatum's from Missouri. He's in the Boston Celtics. Oh, he wins a championship. Oh, that's a title of our own. He claims a champion. So you can't do that. Like it's like for example, like Don Mattingly last year. Oh, if he won the World Series last year with the Blue Jays, that's a Yankees title.
Anthony
No, it's not.
Don LaGreca
That's fraud. No, that's a fraudulent behavior. Well, the only way it would be a fraud though. Charlie, does she have an NBA team? She's from St. Louis, so there's no St. Louis team. I know she's a Blues fan, Cardinals fan, but if she didn't have an NBA team, then it could be the start of something. Now, if she keeps jumping from team to team, then that would be fraudulent, but if she didn't have an NBA team, and Charlie, thank you for the phone call. Peter, you be ruler. I don't think she had an NBA team. I don't know her as well as you do, but being from St. Louis and there being no NBA team and she follows the local teams, I don't think she had an NBA favorite team.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, she didn't. She definitively was on, I believe, on the hunt for a team.
Don LaGreca
Well, there you go. She found it. She found a hook.
Peter Rosenberg
If you're. If you're from another city that doesn't have a team in the sport. A sport in the team. A what? A team in the spot.
Don LaGreca
That's right.
Peter Rosenberg
I said it. Right. And you don't edit, and your penalty is a helmet, and I know your penalties, but if you're from a city that does not have a team in that sport, and then you move someplace, it's the new place that you live, and you start rooting for that team and they win, there's no fraudulence there. Why wouldn't you?
Don LaGreca
Well, she was looking for an NBA team, and she found Boston because Tatum's from Missouri. Listen, I've heard stranger reasons why people follow teams. Now, if next week she's rooting for the Knicks, well, and that.
Anthony
That's.
Don LaGreca
That's a different story.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, sorry. I have it backwards. Took the Celtics for Tatum. That, that.
Don LaGreca
Now that she's off the Celtics, is she off the Celtics?
Peter Rosenberg
Now, I kind of missed this.
Don LaGreca
I'm just going by what Charlie said. Charlie said that she roots for the Celtics because Tatum's from New Zealand, from Missouri. And that's fraudulent. No, I don't think it's fraudulent. It would only be fraudulent if she
Peter Rosenberg
then jumped, then said, oh, the Knicks are really good. I.
Don LaGreca
Now that would be fraudulent. Or if she was a Laker fan, I go, you know, I'm going to switch to the Celtics because T is from Missouri. But it sounded like she didn't have a dog in the fight, wanted one, and found a hook. Now we'll see where we go with it.
Peter Rosenberg
If you don't have a dog in the fight and you find one with a hook, that makes sense. Now, for me, the problem with that has always been it has to be sincere. You know how many people have told me, don, I'm going to help you find a European soccer club. I'm like, oh, I wish I watched soccer year round. I just don't. I'm going to help you. I'm going to help you find it. And I can, I, I can't make it up. I have to have the moment happen that creates it. I don't think now if I sincerely like if some kid from Maryland went on to be the best player at Juventus maybe in that organically hit me and it hit in a real I couldn't just pick it. Do you see what I'm saying, Don? I can't just say like on paper it makes sense. It has to legitimately, you know, start something. But if maybe it did that.
Don LaGreca
But I don't know enough about Michelle Smallman's history with the NBA.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, the reason I'm pushing, the reason I got a little confused about Smallman was and this is I don't want to throw controversy into all of this. I saw Smallman at a nick celebratory party, a private celebratory.
Don LaGreca
Well, I saw he lives in New York and you know, I don't think any right going through. I just want to be careful though
Peter Rosenberg
because the Don it's one thing for me to be there a everyone knows I'm a fraud. You know, I'm a longtime Celtics fan. I'm there just hanging out. But if you're a brand new Celtics fan who just kind of came on board for tenuous reasons and now you're partying with the world champions in the
Don LaGreca
city that you live, I need more information. But thank you Charlie to alert us on this. Penny.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you, Charlie. Thank you, Charlie. First for snitching right here on the radio.

Hosts: Don La Greca, Peter Rosenberg (Alan Hahn absent)
The third hour of the Don, Hahn & Rosenberg show covers a whirlwind of New York sports talk, focusing heavily on Mets owner Steve Cohen’s public backing of President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, as well as the ongoing struggles of the Yankees, and the looming “couch cast” event involving Giants superfan Dave Rothenberg. In between, the hosts traverse themes of sports fandom identity and relitigate what constitutes being a “fraud” as a fan. Woven throughout are classic, high-energy exchanges and memorable rants—most notably Don La Greca’s furious response to Cohen’s statements.

This episode offers a classic mix of impassioned New York sports talk, with Don La Greca’s biting analysis shining as he rails against Mets management logic, while Peter Rosenberg provides levity through banter about fandom, coworker chaos, and the nature of sports passion. The debate over “fraudulent” fandom, the futures of Stearns and the Yankees, and the fallout from simply caring too much about sports delivers all the drama and wit listeners expect.
