Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 880 ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers moving into the big 5 o'clock hour. Don Hahn and Rosenberg, 880 ESPN and the ESPNY app with Don Laca and Peter Rosenberg. I'm Alan Hahn. 800-919-3776 is the number to get in on the conversation. The biggest story of the day so far, although the Myles Garrett trade deadline's a pretty big story in the NFL. But the big story coming out of the weekend that caught everybody by surprise in the overnight on Saturday night all through Sunday was Luka Doncic being traded from the Dallas Mavericks for Anthony Davis. We have never in the in NBA history with all the major they have. There's been blockbuster trades made in this league for the last couple of decades and you can outline each one of them, but they have never. There's never been a trade between two players that were all NBA players currently off of last year. All NBA players. That's never happened. They've never traded two players who are averaging currently over 25 points a game. That has never happened. This is significant when it comes to just history. But Luka Doncic, being a guy at his age as a player that would you be considered a friend, one of the rare franchise players in the NBA. He was moved and it sent shockwaves throughout the NBA. And what does it mean going forward? Obviously it's first and foremost, guys. We were kicking it around earlier. Like think of trades made in all of professional sports where it involves current superstars. And there's a good one to think about. Don, this is a hockey reference. When the Rangers back In the early 70s, they had Brad park and John Ratel. Now Brad park at the time led the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Final. They lost, but they got there and he was a star in the league. They traded him for, as you know, Phil Esposito. Phil Esposito, who was a star star in the league for the Boston Bruins and The trade, you know, I mean, Espo became a star in New York on the ice, off the ice, and even as a broadcaster. But that's the closest thing I think we can come up with. Right. When it comes to two current stars being traded for each other in professional sports.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Because the biggest trades in the history of. Of of sports. All right, you just mentioned that one that was in, I believe, 1975. So that hall of Fame, you know, the two hall of Famers traded for each other, and they were great players at the time. So I think almost that, that, that, that runs parallel to this move that we're talking about, the Lindros trade between Philadelphia and Quebec. But those were two future hall of Famers who hadn't played in the NHL yet, right? No, for the Forsberg and Forsberg. Forsberg and Lindros. So they, you know, they, that was young. The Herschel Walker deal in the NFL comes to mind. There's been plenty of salary dump deals where big names were moved in Major League Baseball, football. You don't see deals like that. The trade deadline so early, and it's very difficult with different systems and stuff. So I don't think there would be one in football other than the Herschel Walker deal. And in basketball, you mentioned Kareem Abdul Jabbar, but there was not another player of his ilk going back to the Bucks. So this is as significant a deal that we've ever seen. And you, you understand it from the Dallas Mavericks perspective because of the future, and they can. And because of Doncic and the issues with him moving forward. And they get a player in Anthony Davis, although he's 35, six years older than Luka, can help you win a championship now in what could be a very wide open Western Conference. And of course, you know, what the Lakers can now do if LeBron James decides to stay, or even this year, maybe making something happen. But, God, you could have gotten more, I would think. Now, now, you had said that Kyrie might have been involved. Stephen A. Said no, it was something that Dallas wanted to do, that was somebody that they wanted to have, but they couldn't have found. Were they just. Were they so afraid, Allen, that if they started to shop him around, word would get out? Like, what was the motivation other than. So Anthony Davis was the only player they wanted?
Don La Greca
Well, again and again, Stephen A. Joins us at 4 o'clock and you can catch it on the podcast. Wherever you get your podcast, always make sure to subscribe to our podcast because you won't miss a thing on the show. But Stephen A explained to us as, and he's correctly explained to us. Nico Harrison is the gm. He was a longtime executive at Nike. That's where I met him many, many years ago when he was there. And that's how we develop our relationship. And one thing that Nico Harrison, he worked closely with Kobe. Now, who was Kobe's agent, Rob Palinko, who is now the gm, has been the GM for the Lakers. So they have had a long standing relationship together. And when you start kicking around things, you always do that with a friend, right? Like if you are thinking to yourself, I don't know if we want to give this guy $345 million, like, I'm not really comfortable doing it. And you, you, you know, you start talking to people that you're closest with. So he has started having those conversations with Polinka and it started to become, who am I comfortable with? What do I need on my team? It's almost like I, I can imagine a scenario, guys, and, and again, I, I did sex with Nico today, but we didn't talk about any of the details. So, so I'm just hypothetically think about it like this. Like, like, like Peter, I just, we're talking and we both are like. And I'm asking you, what do you think? Like, I don't know what I'm gonna do. And then you just say like, well, who? You know, I would take them. And then I would tell you, well, you, you'd have to give me your best player and not LeBron, he's 40. You'd have to give me Anthony Davis. And as if you, Peter, went in your head, like, I might do that. And that's the kind of the genesis of these types of situations. This is how this kind of goes down. And you don't want anybody to know because if you, Polinka, you don't want anybody in the league to know because wait, I can get this guy now. I've got my next 10 year, 15 year star, that when LeBron leaves, I don't have to go through a rebuild. And if it right, so you have that.
Jeff Darlington
And if at this moment you like what Anthony Davis is giving you, but you don't think it's going to lead to a championship, right? You would much rather hit your horse. Is that what you do? You hitch to a horse?
Don La Greca
You hit your horse too?
Jeff Darlington
You horse your horse to a wagon. You'd rather hit your horse to the Luca wagon. Who you think can be your guy and be a big star for a really long time? Ad, of course, is a great player, but his game doesn't have the sex appeal of Doncic and he has the history of injury problems. So you see the appeal, Don. And putting it with Luka Doncic, I.
Peter Rosenberg
Think you hit your wagon.
Don La Greca
You hit the wagon.
Jeff Darlington
There it is.
Peter Rosenberg
Ramona Shelburne tweeted out that Palenque understood nothing could leak. Not a breath of it. They learned the same lesson many times throughout their recent history with blockbuster trades. The infamous failed trade with Chris Paul in 2011. So that was probably the motivation. If I start shopping them, somebody's going to leak it and we're going to lose a lot. Or maybe the NBA. Maybe the NBA would then shut it down, you know, once, I don't think. Because that's what happened with Paul. Right. Like if it starts to get out there, that's.
Don La Greca
David Stern stepped in.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, David Stern stepped in and did.
Don La Greca
Not think it was a right. He didn't think it was a fair trade.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Don La Greca
And so he said no, he was. They were not going to. Going to. And you never see that happen because it always goes through the clearinghouse and the league has to approve the deal. And, and Stern made it clear, I'm not approving that. And you never see that. Now in this case, there's no way Adam Silver would have, if he got wind of it, would say, I'm not approving that. It's an all NBA player for an all NBA player. Well, what's wrong with the deal? Just because people on Twitter want one to include five first round picks? Because that has been the norm. No, the only reason why these trades for like Kevin Durant and others included multiple firsts is because you're not getting a star back. You're literally getting an all NBA player for an all NBA player. How is that not an equal trade?
Peter Rosenberg
And it just doesn't affect the competition level of either team. I think the Lakers have to feel that in a way they could be better. Clearly. And now Dallas feels that they have a chance to win a championship, so nothing really tipped the scales either way. Now I think this can age way better for LA based on the fact that they've got a player that's much younger, but because of, you know, the history with his weight problems and all that. But, you know, caveat emptor. Right. So that's, that's on, on, on la, but they're still betting on a, on a young world class player. Dallas feels like they got better even though they lost about 5, 6 years in age by bringing in Anthony Davis. No, there's no way that nix this. But if it goes. If this had been something that had been a bidding war and you're going into the All Star break, it's the, that that could be something that would have sent up a red flag and caused some issues. But hey, it's good for the sport, right? You said it earlier that this has kind of become a sport where a lot of other things are more important than the actual games being played and.
Don La Greca
The trades and signings.
Peter Rosenberg
Other than being a Knick fan and seeing your team having this great regular season, it's been kind of a snooze fest this year, right? As far as like real excitement until we get to the playoffs and then it's going to explode. Because I think it's wide open this year and it's going to be a lot of fun and the trade deadline is going to be great. But this gives us a little bit of an appetizer for the deadline and then once we get past the deadline, then, then it's a race to the finish and then hopefully the playoffs are going to be great. But this has kind of been a not too exciting regular season for the NBA that all of a sudden just heated up.
Don La Greca
And Michael K. Had Brian Windhorst on earlier today. Wendy a good friend of the show, obviously, and Wendy very plugged in, especially when it comes to all things LeBron. And the, the sense is, you know, LeBron and AD were very close. You know, Clutch Sports, which is LeBron's agency, which his, his longtime friend Rich Paul runs that, and they represent Anthony Davis as well, that LeBron can't be happy about this. He was definitely left in the dark. That's what all reports say, that he had no idea this was coming. He was playing the Knicks and putting up a 30 point triple double on Saturday night. And the reports were he was out to dinner with his family here in New York City when he was told of this trade and was caught off guard. So there was some thought that if he's not happy about this, oh, you just traded for my replacement. I guess I'm done here. That maybe he would say, all right, I'm going to waive my no trade and I want out. And I maybe, you know, again, all those stories about him joining Steph Curry and Golden State, those two have talked about how fun it would be to play together and maybe that could be a cool thing to see. Brian Windhorst, though, told Michael K. What he thinks about LeBron possibly demanding a triple.
Brian Windhorst
I mean, I can't say for sure how things are going to happen in the next four days, but I don't think so. Not in the next four days. We'll see after a couple of months when we get to the summer. But, you know this concept that the most important thing in the world to LeBron is winning a championship. He cares. He wants to win. LeBron wants to be a Laker. LeBron wants to live in Los Angeles. That's what his priority has been. He wants to be right by the Lakers franchise. The Lakers franchise is done right by him, including drafting the Sun. So how do you pay that back? You pay that back with helping the Lakers franchise out, which can be fitting in here, and working with Luka to make it work, and so that when he does retire, that he helps leave the Lakers franchise in a good place with Luka in the centerpiece. We're in this world where if you don't try to win a championship every second, every day, you're looked down, down on. Well, it might be a process that LeBron plays a role in. In the last act of his career. Could be playing with his son with the Lakers and help him transition to Luca. That's something that I think he would entertain.
Don La Greca
So, guys, I entertained it for fun. The idea and something Stephen a brought up on. On Get Up. And also, first take this morning of what, What. What do you think LeBron should do? So it's again, a personal opinion, and it's like, well, he should just demand a trade to the. The Golden State warriors or to the Knicks and finally play in New York, which has always been a flirtation for 22 years now. That's fun. We do it for radio. But I'll say this, what I believe is exactly what Wendy's saying here. I think LeBron looks at this like, okay, this is a guy who I can mentor, who I think we can try to have some success with. They'll go find a center. They're going to try to find one, and they'll be as competitive as they can be. And then at some point, LeBron's going to say, okay, I think I'm done here. Like, I'm going to retire now. And that's it. And then it's Luca's team going forward. And then all eyes are on Luka and whether or not he will do all the things, you know, everybody's going to be watching him physically now, just like everybody watches Zion every moment, every picture of Luka, if he looks a little chubby, if he doesn't look right People will be all over his case now because this is such a big deal. I think there's so much more pressure on Luka Doncic now more than ever than There is on LeBron James in LA.
Jeff Darlington
And. And how much more pressure is there for Lu than there was three days ago? I mean, you had just taken the Mavericks to the final, right? We know there have been issues about his. His weight, what kind of shape he's in, but the bottom line is everybody loves you. The public loves you. You've been there for your whole. I mean, not that short an NBA career at this point. It's the life that he knows in the US Is living in Dallas. Everyone's satisfied with him. All the fans are obsessed. And you've been good. Now you got to go start over again. Live up to the Laker way. Live up to the way your. Your hero, Kobe Bryant did things in Los Angeles. LeBron James and I think Windhorse gave some really good. A really good reminder about the situation. LeBron's in there. Like, listen, we can be critical, and we have been critical at times. At least I have been about, you know, the brawny thing and whether I thought it made sense and whatever. You cannot deny that LeBron James has mostly been a great guy who doesn't carry himself like a nozzle. It is unlikely, Don, that he would turn around. Around after how the Lakers have been to him and then put them in a terrible place because he's so desperate to win a championship with a fourth team. It does make sense that he would want to try to get them because he wants to be in la. Like, I mean, not speaking at a school, but I told you guys, I got together with Rich Paul recently and about something unrelated, and we were chatting and he talked about, like, he's very open about what his process is in terms of finding homes for players, and he's really big on not sticking players places where it looks good on paper for basketball for. But not for their life. And he was saying. He was always. He said when LeBron was considering where the next stop was after Cleveland, rich said to LeBron, you're going to LA. You know why? Because you're already happy there. Your wife's happy there, Your business is good there. Where else are you going? It's a great point.
Peter Rosenberg
No, because, listen, it. Would it be sexy to go to New York and slay the dragon with the Knicks? That would look really great on his resume. But would he truly be happy here? And I think he does want to do the Lakers right now. To Alan's point about the attention on Luka, usually you don't get a lot of attention. La, we, we saw, we saw Manny Ramirez go to LA was like the perfect place for him because they didn't care about his work ethic. They love his long hair and you know, so those are kind of the way the LA fans are. Not with the Lakers. I mean the Lakers are. They're an established franchise about winning. They're like the Yankees of the NBA. Like the. Right. Maybe the Boston Celtics are. But they're right there. Right. There's a brand and there's a certain expectation and attention. The Lakers get that I don't think a lot of other teams in LA get where when he was a maverick. Allen list. The Mavericks are important, but they're not the Dallas Cowboys. They're not the most important team in that market. You can go relatively ignored with all that. But in la you're going to be expected to win. You're going to be expected to do the best you can. They're not going to tolerate him coming in overweight. Certainly LeBron's not. Or Palenque or anybody involved in that team.
Don La Greca
So we'll see MZ following him. If they catch him at an in and out burger. He's. It's.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, that's the thing.
Don La Greca
It's everything now.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. So he's going to have to. And we'll see if he can handle that, you know, because there is, I think a little bit of a different expectation. Again, Dallas is a big market, but you know where the Mavericks stand in the sports landscape compared to the Dallas Cowboys. But in la, yeah, the Dodgers are a big deal, but the Lakers, man, because of how much they've won with the attention on LeBron James. I mean, I don't know. I'm not from LA. Peter spends a lot more time there. But if you were probably like to rank the teams, maybe the Dodgers are a little bit more popular because it's baseball compared to basketball there. I don't know. The Lakers might be number one. Just be how much they've won and LeBron being there. It's definitely 1 1A, right?
Jeff Darlington
I don't think it's 1 1A. I think the Lakers are a distant 11 to everything.
Don La Greca
Yeah, Magic and Kobe are. Are just. They resonate in the. The entire southern region.
Peter Rosenberg
But it's not, but it's not even that. It's. Listen, maybe the Dodgers are more popular. I don't know. I. You might be right, Peter. I. I don't know. But I don't think the attention to winning is on the Dodgers the way it is for the Lakers, because the Dodgers haven't won as much as the Lakers.
Don La Greca
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, the Dodgers have, you know, won a championship. They've had two championships since 1988, you know, but the Lakers, they've established themselves as a perennial winner. They got the best player in the sport on the team. Like, I think there's probably a lot of focus on them than there was a lot of focus on Luka in Dallas.
Don La Greca
I also wonder again with Luka is now you're going to a team that ain't your team. This is LeBron's team. Like when Dallas, it was always his team. Even when Kyrie showed up, it was still his team. This is now someone else's team, someone else's standards, someone else's rules and everything else. That's going to be a lot to see how Luka handles it. And I'll remind everybody that Luca came up, he grew up. And Kobe Bryant was his favorite player. Kobe Bryant used to try when he would go to game. Kobe loved Luka, loved, loved his game. And if Kobe sat courtside, there were a lot of times because Kobe was multilingual and he would, he would trash talk Luka in Slovenia. And Luka loved it because he would look up like, wait, wait, who's saying that? In my native language, he turned. It's Kobe. And so there was a special thing there. And I just wonder again, like all this stuff connects, does it become something that maybe wakes him up, maybe gets him the locked in player that the NBA has been begging for, but it's.
Peter Rosenberg
Like the best case scenario for him, Right? You're not the man, but I'm gonna groom you into becoming the man.
Don La Greca
LeBron has to want to do that part. And I don't see evidence that that's going to be on.
Peter Rosenberg
Maybe not right away, but. But it's going to be understood, right? You are going to be your LeBron.
Don La Greca
Yeah. I don't think he's going to mentor as much as he's just going to set the standard. This is how we do things around here.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, that like it's, it's a man.
Jeff Darlington
Right. I don't think he's going to sit.
Peter Rosenberg
Him down and, you know, tutor him on how to be a Laker, but I think just by osmosis, you're watching this guy work, you're watching how he handles the media, the attention on him, and just knowing in the back of your mind, one day he's going to be gone and now I'm going to be the man. And he's going to probably be better for that.
Don La Greca
Yeah. 800-919-3776. A lot of people want to sound off on this. Let's go to Chris and wants all to start us off in this hour. Hey, Chris, how we doing?
Chris
Guys?
Caller
Real quick before I get on the Luca.
Chris
Peter, who are we rooting for for the Super Bowl?
Jeff Darlington
Oh, God, the last week, man, the amount of videos that I have been sent of Eagle fans tormenting Commander fans. I don't know if I've ever reversed on a take more.
Caller
I'm glad, I'm glad.
Jeff Darlington
I might, I might wear my home's jersey during the Super Bowl.
Caller
Yo, sing some Taylor Swift. That's all you need to do. Let him, let him suffer twice.
Jeff Darlington
No, listen, I love. And by the way, I'm very high on Taylor right now after she, after she dapped up Jay Z when Beyonce won album of the year. Very high on Tay Tay this week so that I'm on Team Chiefs now. I hate them. I hate, I hate them to death. But I'll be rooting for them.
Caller
I'm. I'm gonna take some. A little victory lap that I, that I helped out a little bit less.
Chris
Than the Eagles fans.
Caller
But anyway, Alan.
Chris
Luca.
Caller
Yep, Luca. The reason why it's not a fair trade is because Luca carries you single handedly to the finals.
Jeff Darlington
Like the year there is that guy Kyrie Irving.
Don La Greca
I mean, he did have Kyrie two years.
Caller
Listen, besides that, the year before they got Luca, the year when they missed the, they, they decided to miss the playoffs. Before that, the year prior to that, they were in the Western Conference finals.
Don La Greca
Right?
Caller
And that's why there's like three people you trade Luca for and it's Giannis Jokic and maybe that's it. Anthony Davis. Like, like I'm just like. Let's just be real. The guy said he called no other team to trade Luka Doncic. That is, that is a fireball offense. This is the same guy who couldn't change a PowerPoint to get Stephon Curry to resign with Nike. He left Kevin Durant.
Don La Greca
Come on, that's an old story, Chris. That's an old story.
Caller
Alan, this guy didn't call the other teams. Alan, Alan. I'm just saying right now, hypothetically.
Don La Greca
But again, Chris. No, no, Chris, Chris, what you're saying, I've heard all day long and it's. You gotta understand, you need to know more of what's going on. Chris. You're doing it as if this is some type of, like, generalization. They had a specific need on that team and it was to get the best big man possible. They got the best big man possible. Tell me who they could have gotten instead of Anthony Davis that would have made them a better team.
Caller
Any. Any big. Besides Wemby and Joker. You could have got for Luca plus five picks.
Don La Greca
Once again, but you're missing the point, Chris. Who is better than Anthony Davis that was available? No one.
Caller
Anthony Davis.
Don La Greca
Just say no one. You're wrong. Just say no one, Chris. There's no one better.
Caller
You can't tell me that a guy who you have conditioning problems for, you're going to trade for Anthony Davis, six years older with the most litaniest injury history. His nickname is Street Close for a reason. I'm not that.
Don La Greca
What's he doing this year? How's his numbers look this year?
Caller
He's a great player, but there's a reason why they lose in the finals when. When. When LeBron can't rely on him because he's not that type of guy. You know, I was scared.
Don La Greca
So who would you have rather them trade for that was a legitimate trade candidate? Just give me the guy. Just tell me.
Caller
Alan. The thing is, I can't make a legitimate trade because it's Luka Doncic Allen. Like, the Nets would have given him.
Don La Greca
Every pick, but Chris. I'm trading him. I'm trading. I am moving on from a guy who I don't want to give $345 million to. You know, if I'm trading a guy, I don't want to pay. And I need a center. I know. I need a big man. I need the best big man possible. I need an All Star because I'm giving up an All Star and you're going to tell me anyone.
Caller
Do you like Chad Holgram?
Don La Greca
Are you serious about a guy that can't stay healthy? You're talking about a guy that can't stay healthy.
Caller
Six picks. Aaron Wiggins, Isaiah Joe. How is that not a better trade, first of all?
Don La Greca
Because. Can I answer it?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Jeff Darlington
And you're missing it. I'm sorry, he's missing it.
Caller
We're not missing it.
Jeff Darlington
You are missing it.
Don La Greca
By the way, those six picks are useless because they're not gonna lose. Oh, my God.
Caller
If he doesn't play and he's gone in two years. Years.
Don La Greca
You are spending too much time on social media listening to people who don't know. You're spending too much time listening to people who Pretend to be reporters. They don't talk to the people involved. That's what this show gives you. People who actually talk to those who made the trade. I'm telling you what happened. They wanted the best big possible to put, put him with Kyrie because they wanted to win now.
Jeff Darlington
Correct.
Don La Greca
Is might be a nice player at, at some point, once he's healthy enough to actually play, but he's still super skinny and still very young. I got a guy that's already won a ring who's played with the best player and one of the best players in the history of the game in LeBron James, and he's now ready to step in and play with a guy like Kyrie, who they have a relationship and they know him and they're going to connect and it's going to work. Work. They know it and they think they can win. Right now they don't want six picks. Six picks is for later. That's what teams that are blowing it up and getting rid of a star do. Who's the big man? Who's the big man that you wanted to get because you weren't getting Jokic? Who else are you getting?
Peter Rosenberg
And they wanted to keep it on the qt and, and also.
Don La Greca
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
What you're saying is, is that if they did open it up, this still might be the deal they end up making.
Don La Greca
That's a good point. So very good point.
Jeff Darlington
What's the, what's the QT again? What's the what, what's the qt? What is it? I know what it means, but what does it mean? Because we, you know, my people, people my age would say down low on the, on the low.
Peter Rosenberg
I think, is it quiet time?
Jeff Darlington
I don't, is on the quiet. I think it's quiet, quiet time.
Don La Greca
Created.
Jeff Darlington
By five year olds.
Don La Greca
Let's go to the Google on that. Go to the Google on that. I, I, we put, I mean, I like Chris. He's a good caller. He cares, he's passionate about basketball. So I gave him more time than I probably should have. But we have more calls to get to. But coming up, we also have a Super Bowl. By the way, this is amazing that it's over. It's kind of like overshadowed a little bit of the NFL and what a, what a, what a Pro bowl weekend it was, huh?

It's been a while since we've talked some football because we've had so much basketball headlines going on these days. But we do have a Super bowl on Sunday, Chiefs and the Eagles. And joining us right now, one of the better, one of the best ones we have is our ESPN NFL reporter Jeff Darlington, who is embedded with the Chiefs at Super bowl, and he's kind enough to give us a few minutes here. Jeff, how you doing? It's been a minute.
Chris
What's up? How are we doing guys?
Don La Greca
All right. Roger Goodell even has to now answer these questions about the allegations of the officials favoring the Chiefs. How tiresome of a story has this become with the Chiefs and even in the NFL?
Chris
I mean, I think it depends on who you ask. I certainly understand people. It's a tale of all the time for me. I kind of thought it jumped the shark a little bit when I heard a Patriots fan recently lamenting the calls that the Chiefs get in this dynasty. It's like the lack of self awareness in some cases kind of tells the story. But you know, it's something that the Chiefs obviously. Is it frustrating to them? Sure. But I don't think it like necessarily drives Mahomes, for instance, to any type of degree of frustration. It's one of those things too where it's not. I know some people say he throws his hands up and maybe does a little bit of a flop occasionally, but I don't think that it's not one of those things that he can necessarily control. You know, like, it's not like he's going to be like, hey Raph, would you put that flag back in your pocket if it is a close call? So it's not really a narrative that he. I don't know what he's supposed to do or say in this one, but.
Peter Rosenberg
I do think he has taken it to an art level, whether it's slowing down at the sideline or just the lateness of the slide. And good on him. If he's able to fool the referees, then we've seen that from great professional athletes. But I'm not going to exactly say that there's nothing he can do about it. I think he's done a great job of working the rules in his favor.
Chris
No, that's fair. I guess I'm talking. Yeah, you're right. Even the slides a little bit late. The one that I really don't, I definitely don't deep dive on the conspiracy theory that like this is rigged and it's set up and I, I personally just can't get wrap my head around the fact that like enough people are keeping this big of a secret. I just, it doesn't, doesn't work for me. But the idea, one that really does ear kidneys when quarterbacks slow up on the sideline or like, or they like fake it, like they're going to keep going and then they take a hit and it's like, what do you want the defender to do? Like he's got to get the guy down. Those are the ones. I think that if the NFL could find a way to manage, it might at least chill out the fans to a degree.
Jeff Darlington
We've been talking Jeff at least, especially Don and myself. Alan. Alan doesn't hate the Chiefs. Don and I have absolutely had enough. I cannot believe I'm seeing Chiefs Eagles. No, it's not embarrassing.
Don La Greca
Greatness.
Jeff Darlington
It's called being a normal fan. I just can't take it anymore. I never claim to be a professional, but let me ask you, since you're. You're close to the team, who do you find, like, is this actually a likable bunch and who do you really enjoy getting to cover?
Chris
Listen, I actually really enjoy Mahomes. And I know you, you know, listeners. Little eye roll it. I get it. But like, he is not. You know, there's a line from Batman where he says, either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain.
Jeff Darlington
Yeah.
Chris
Like, I understand that there's a lot of factors to things that maybe frustrate fans or make him unlikable, but behind the scenes, like, he is. He. He. And we have a lot of them in the NFL right now. Like, Josh Allen's another one. He's a dude, you know, he loves co lights and watching SportsCenter. Like, he. He. And playing some video games. Like, it. It's not. He's just a really normal human when you're around him. And I think that that's why he translates really well in a locker room.
Jeff Darlington
And Mahomes doesn't give you. Mahomes isn't diva superstar. Ish.
Don La Greca
He's.
Jeff Darlington
He's easy to approach.
Chris
No.
Jeff Darlington
Things like that.
Chris
Oh my God, no. Not even close. No. I mean, he talks sports. Like, you know, I've, like, I'm trying to think of an example I can use. But like, I. I've been in a room with him where there's highlights of a game on and he's like talking through the highlights of the game as if he's just a normal fan. I. I don't. I mean, he's a dude and know. But like I said, a lot of these guys are Josh Allen. Same way. But. But I do think that Mahomes is much more likable than perhaps the dynasty that he is currently encapsulating might interesting. Might otherwise provide.
Don La Greca
Yeah, you saw. You saw Jeff. His reaction to the Luca Doncic trade. Like he had a series different emotions as a Dallas Mavericks fan.
Chris
He watches more ESPN than you would probably believe. All these guys. That's the other funny part, by the way.
Jeff Darlington
Kelsey too. Jeff. Kel, he doesn't seem like. Wow.
Chris
No, no. In fact, you know what's Funny about Travis is that, like, the higher his profile gets, like, the more with the Taylor Swift stuff almost, it. He's kind of like becoming more normal. Like, I don't know how to explain it, but no, he's a good dude, man. Like, these guys are really good people.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, around this time of the Patriot dynasty, the great talk show fodder would be who needs who more, Belichick or Brady? Will it ever get to that point? Just because he was drafted so high and so. But I feel like Andy Reid sometimes is kind of left out of this conversation of greatness.
Chris
I think he's, He's. I think he has gotten himself back in it. Especially if he were to win the Super Bowl. I would say that the Belichick Brady analogy feels a little bit different. Like, it's easier to debate that because I think, like, Mahomes is such a freakish player in so many ways, whereas Tom, who, by the way, proved this narrative wrong, but feels much more like a soldier, product of the system kind of guy. And I think that that's what leads to that debate. By the way, Belichick defensive coach, although that, that kind of. I don't know, I, I tend to think that Mahomes is just such a super freak when it comes to a lot of what he does on the football field that you're always going to say it's, it's more Mahomes than anything else, but.
Jeff Darlington
By the way. But Jeff, I can completely push back on that because the difference is we do have the case of McNabb, who you kind of feel like was a pretty good quarterback, who was amazing with Andy Reid. It'll be interesting to see if we ever, if we ever get to see Mahomes without Reed.
Chris
Well, it's always a tough debate, though, because, you know, I, I would always. It's funny, like with Bray, even when he went to Tampa and before he won the super bowl and completely killed this. But, you know, I was always like, if he goes to Tampa and doesn't play well, I mean, the dude is 44 years old, like a player at that point. Like, unless he's playing in the peak of his career, it's. He's not going to be able to settle that debate. And then Brady goes and wins the super bowl and does settle the debate. But, But I, I think I, I just think with Mahomes and Andy, I don't know that we'll ever find out for sure, but I don't know. I mean, if Mahomes is playing for the Bills, Are they winning Super Bowls? I. I will never know the answer, but I. I think that Mahomes definitely does have something different than anybody else in the league.
Don La Greca
We're talking with Jeff Darlington, our ESPN NFL reporter. He is spending Super Bowl a week with the Kansas City Chiefs. And by the way, you never can say never anymore. If Anthony Davis and Luka Donjis get traded for each other, who's to say there's a world in the NFL where Mahomes gets traded? But how about. I don't know. I mean, I'm just kidding, but just a little. A little off the super bowl story. But Miles Garrett asking for a trade, which might not be a. A shock, but just in your notebook of. Of teams that, although I guess 31 teams will line up for a player like this, where would you think would be the. Yeah. What would be the best landing spots? And I mean realistic landing spots for a player like that?
Chris
Yeah. I heard someone float the Commanders. It might have been Schefter just, like, as possible places. And that, to me, made the most sense because that's a team that's like. You know, there was a lot of people within that organization that Magic Johnson even was basically like, man, I thought we would. Who's now a partial owner of the Commanders. I should point that out. He. He was kind of like, I. I knew things were heading the right. Right direction, but I didn't think we were going to get to where we got this fast. So that could make a team in the offseason say, all right, maybe we should speed up this sort of building process and go get someone like Miles Garrett who can immediately give us a veteran presence who's a superstar player. So I'll say that, to me, would be the one that makes the most sense right now.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, Peter, why don't you give him your top five quarterbacks? I'm done. But Peter came up with top five quarterbacks. The station almost blew up.
Jeff Darlington
I didn't. I didn't think it was. No, he was not. And that's why the station.
Chris
Listen, you can make Lamar.
Don La Greca
No, no, let him give it to you.
Jeff Darlington
Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, listen, I. I appreciate you, but. But my. No, the.
Peter Rosenberg
The.
Jeff Darlington
The logic was not about Super Bowls or anything like that. It was just who I think, you know, going into next season, I think the best skilled quarterbacks are and that defenses go. Oh, my God. About. That's how I viewed it. And I had. I had burrow, one dive. Joshua Lamar. Lamar. 2. Patrick, 3. Josh, 4. Jaden Daniels, 5. And the station almost blew up because I didn't have Mahomes number one. And I understand, I understand Mahomes ability to win. I understand the things that he does that you just go, oh my God. But I also saw a guy this season, in spite of their incredible record, Jeff, that just didn't terrify me week to week at the helm in the same way that he has in previous years. I don't think that's.
Chris
It'S not insane, but he didn't have. Could you imagine Patrick Mahomes with Jamar Chase T. Higgins?
Don La Greca
Like, that's what I said.
Chris
I mean it just, it's a nice player.
Jeff Darlington
Like, but can you imagine Joe Burrow?
Chris
He's a nice player.
Jeff Darlington
Can you imagine Joe Burrow with maybe the greatest offensive head coach in history?
Chris
I, I, I agree that isn't. But could you. What would you think Joe Burrow with these weapons that Mahomes has is as good as he is right now with the Bengals with chasing Higgins?
Jeff Darlington
Probably not. And, and I do think you get to a situation at some point where it becomes one place plus one equals three with the Chiefs, it's like, yeah, the combination of what they are kind of now makes them a perfectly impossible team to beat. That kind of can't be replicated. So. No, I hear that. I hear that.
Chris
I also, I could see you making a case for Lamar over Mahomes, except until you bring up the fact that he's got Derek Henry now. Like again, play the game of putting Derek Henry on a Mahomes offense sense. I just.
Jeff Darlington
You're saying Derek Henry's better than Pacheco. It sounds like that's what you're saying.
Don La Greca
It's a reach, Jeff.
Jeff Darlington
That's why you make the.
Chris
It really is. They have, by the way. Yeah, they have, by the way, gotten to the point. I feel like the, the Chiefs to where it has become similar to what it was with the Patriots where like you have such a clear and defined culture that you can plug and play guys better than most organization. So whether that's that, you know, Andy Reid, Brett Feach, whoever it is, it definitely seems to be at least giving Mahomes a boost when it comes to his ability to get these teams to Super Bowls.
Don La Greca
Yeah, this is great stuff. It's always great to have you on. So thanks so much. Don't be a stranger. Enjoy the Super Bowl. And you just know that Peter is a commander's fan. So what you said about Miles Garrett.
Chris
Now commanders every, every right to be excited. But hey, watch what, watch what you wish for in five years, everybody's gonna hate the commanders like people hate the Chiefs.
Jeff Darlington
You know what? I pray. I pray you're right, Jeff.
Chris
There you go. All right. Thanks, guys.

Don La Greca
What is this?
Jeff Darlington
Should have been song of the year, but I'll take album of the year for Beyonce. That would be Texas Hold'em And I will see you. I'll see you at MetLife Stadium. I will be there. Kids, that's. That's date night for mom and dad.
Don La Greca
When is this?
Jeff Darlington
I. She just announced the tour that she's doing four nights at MetLife in May. End of May, just for it.
Don La Greca
So she's. She's already going after Taylor now She wants to. She wants to get 2 billion dollar tour.
Jeff Darlington
Well, no, no, she's not doing nearly as many cities I think doing. No, because she did. She. She did last year. She already did the Renaissance tour and did a pretty huge tour. So this one, it looks like 10 cities, maybe 30 dates. So it's, it's light work relative to like huge tour. But no, they do.
Don La Greca
Okay. Stops in New York City. That's. That's pretty big for four stops at.
Jeff Darlington
MetLife is a wild amount.
Don La Greca
That. That's, that's huge.
Jeff Darlington
That's a lot of.
Don La Greca
That's going to be. That'll be the. The four biggest performances at MetLife Stadium in the last decade.
Peter Rosenberg
Right? Exactly.
Jeff Darlington
Don't forget Taylor did a couple also.
Don La Greca
So Taylor did too. I should. I should say. But.
Jeff Darlington
But he might have the stones, you know.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know. I'm sure there was a Princeton Ski Shop thing going on in that life.
Jeff Darlington
Yeah, there. There are things that can happen. They're just not football related. As long as it's not football related.
Don La Greca
Let'S just say that it'll be all right. How about this? It's the happiest any crowd would have been since Taylor last performed there. That much.
Peter Rosenberg
The biggest football game played in MetLife Stadium honestly was the Super Bowl. And by the way, I mean since.
Jeff Darlington
By the way, a complete. Even that sucked and it wasn't even a good game.
Peter Rosenberg
Even.
Jeff Darlington
Even the super bowl unrelated to the Giants and Jets was a horrifying affair.
Peter Rosenberg
Now you can't blame MetLife because the Giants did win a Super bowl with that as their home building and they did win a playoff game in MetLife when they beat. When they basically shut out the Atlanta Falcons gave them. There was safety.
Jeff Darlington
Now I got. I got.
Don La Greca
In the last decade they have soiled the themselves both in that building.
Peter Rosenberg
No, like I said, Princeton Ski Shop. If. I don't know if we had the sasso softball there, I think that that would have been a bigger event than anything that's happened football wise the last day.
Don La Greca
Can I. Can I just get to this real quick here please, if you don't mind. And again, I. I know we like to go off on tangents, but I'm getting yelled at today for clock management. This is bad. I'm Mike McCarthy all of a sudden. I can't.
Jeff Darlington
Go ahead. Go ahead, Mike.
Don La Greca
So. Exactly. So. So speaking of Mike's, the great Mike Miller who's been fantastic with a lot of our draft coverage in the NFL these days. I meant Matt. Did I see Mike McCarthy Matt Miller. Anyways, let me just get this straight.
Jeff Darlington
Go ahead.
Don La Greca
It's Matt Miller. All right.
Jeff Darlington
Okay. All right.
Don La Greca
See, that's what happens when I got five voices in my ears right now. So he spent a week at Senior bowl, talked to all different team executives and everything else, and got a sense of what everybody's feeling going into this draft. So he put together a mock out of this, and he just posted on ESPN.com why I'm bringing this up right now is because it's suddenly a change of heart when it comes to what a lot of people think is going to happen at the top of the draft. Instead of quarterbacks at 1 and 2, there will not be quarterbacks at 1 and 2. From what he understands at Tennessee, at number one, he says they're going for Abdul Carter, who's the next generational talent edge rusher in the NFL. He's from Penn State. And remember Chad Brinker, who's the team president of Tennessee Titans, said they're not going to pass on generational talent and they think that Carter is that. So they would try to set it up like a Micah Parsons type thing and build a defense around him. Keep that in mind. At number two, it's the Cleveland Browns. Speaking of generational talents, they're looking to trade or he. They have to trade Myles Garrett because he just asked for one. But they have the number two pick. They also have the Sean Watson. They're stuck with him in that contract. Will they go quarterback? Apparently not. They're also going with a talent that can help them immediately, and that's Travis Hunter, who is the combo wide receiver, cornerback. Everybody knows his story out of Colorado, the Heisman Trophy winner. That leaves the Giants now at number three with the choice of any quarterback they want. Want, Right. And what Miller is saying is that the Giants will take the quarterback that they have followed very closely. And I know this, that they have been at a lot of his games this year. Cam Ward of Miami would be then the Giants pick at number three, and he says they're in a quarterback or bust mode, and so they are going quarterback and that Ward is the fit.
Peter Rosenberg
Wow.
Don La Greca
If you're a Giants fan, you got to be happy about this if it happens that way. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, listen, if. If you feel that you like one of these two quarterbacks or love one of these two quarterbacks, then by all means, then that's. That would be great. I don't have a preference over either of the two because I didn't see enough of them or know enough about Them to be able to say I want one over the other. So I guess that opens the door for Shador to go to the Raiders at 6 because I don't think New England or Jacksonville will be taking a quarterback. So that would. And I'm sure the Raiders would be very happy with that. I'm sure Sanders would be glad to go there. So interesting. And then works out well. And then was that leave the jets at 7. What does he have the Jets.
Don La Greca
Jets at 7 would be building up that. That offensive line. Will Campbell from lsu, the tackle and so you'd have him and Olufashanu basically trying to figure out if they could be your cornerstones going forward.
Peter Rosenberg
God, I hate.
Don La Greca
I know it's not any lineman.
Peter Rosenberg
Like maybe. Maybe just I'm shell shocked because the Giants have done it with almost no success outside of Thomas.
Don La Greca
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Go back to Flowers and obviously Neil.
Don La Greca
Yeah. Well the Jet. The. The jets. The Jets a couple you know a decade ago with. With my Tannerbaum didn't did a pretty good job when they were able to get a couple of big pieces in the offensive line that ended up being corner pieces for a long time and of course we'll see if they could do that again here. But it's. To me it just stops at the Giants at 3. If they can get the quarterback that they like the most. Like if they have the pick of anyone at 3 that sets up to be perfect. Exactly what they would want. And so you know thought it would share it. So that's what we did.
Peter Rosenberg
And isn't it funny that if that turns out to be the case. So I guess isn't out of the realm of possibility. I had mentioned to you last week what are the chances of one of these two quarterbacks dropping to seven? You're like zero. I was like well can you imagine under that scenario the jets would just miss the team ahead of them would take one of the two quarterbacks.
Don La Greca
Could they trade up with someone maybe. Maybe even Jacksonville to get ahead of the Raiders and take Shador Sanders? Would that be that crazy? With this new group led by Aaron.
Jeff Darlington
Glenn for some reason the video keeps going around on social media over the last week or so with that jets. The jets commanders field goal that the jets hit from like 56 yards that gave the Commanders Jaden Daniels. It's just.
Peter Rosenberg
It's just.
Jeff Darlington
It's just such a crazy thing to think about man. All of these things. I know Don. We like to argue about it and what's tanking and this and that but man, it is such a crazy little thing that can change your entire trajectory.
Don La Greca
I didn't, I didn't need that right now. I needed Superbox Bonanza 6. Each qualifier will take home an ESPN prize pack. Don, Hahn & Rosenberg Podcast Summary
Episode: Hour 3: Doncic Trade & Jeff Darlington
Release Date: February 3, 2025
The episode opens with hosts Don La Greca, Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg diving straight into the most shocking news in the NBA: Luka Doncic's unprecedented trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. Don La Greca sets the stage by highlighting the rarity of this move.
Don La Greca [00:35]: "The biggest story of the day so far... Luka Doncic being traded from the Dallas Mavericks for Anthony Davis."
Alan Hahn emphasizes that this is the first trade in NBA history involving two All-NBA players, both averaging over 25 points per game. This move is likened to monumental trades in other sports, underscoring its significance.
Alan Hahn [00:38]: "They have never traded two players who are all NBA players currently averaging over 25 points a game. That has never happened."
Peter Rosenberg draws parallels to historic trades like Brad Park for Phil Esposito in the 1970s NHL, and the Herschel Walker deal in the NFL, illustrating the magnitude of trading two prime superstars.
Peter Rosenberg [02:54]: "These are comparable to the Brad Park and Phil Esposito trade... one of the rare blockbuster trades involving current superstars."
The hosts discuss the Mavericks' perspective of trading a future franchise cornerstone in Luka for the veteran presence of Anthony Davis. They debate whether Dallas prioritized immediate championship potential over building around Doncic.
Peter Rosenberg [04:50]: "Anthony Davis was the only player they wanted... Dallas feels like they got better even though they lost about 5, 6 years in age by bringing in Anthony Davis."
Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg explore the increased pressure on Doncic as he joins a high-profile team like the Lakers, comparing it to the scrutiny faced by stars like Zion Williamson.
Don La Greca [12:19]: "There is so much more pressure on Luka Doncic now more than ever... All eyes are on Luka."
Brian Windhorst's insights, shared by Don La Greca, shed light on LeBron James' possible reactions to the trade. There's speculation about LeBron's mentorship role and how this trade might influence the Lakers' future dynamics.
Brian Windhorst [11:22]: "LeBron cares deeply about winning and wants to be a Laker. He might play a role in Luka's development and the Lakers' success moving forward."
A heated caller segment features a passionate debate about the fairness of the trade, questioning the decision to exchange a young, franchise player for a seasoned veteran with injury concerns. Don and Peter defend the Mavericks' choice by emphasizing Davis's immediate impact and championship viability.
Caller [20:40]: "The reason why it's not a fair trade is because Luka carries you single-handedly to the finals."
Don La Greca [24:03]: "They wanted the best big possible to put him with Kyrie because they wanted to win now."
Shifting gears, the conversation moves to the Super Bowl featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. Jeff Darlington provides insights from his vantage point with the Chiefs, discussing controversies around officiating favoritism and quarterback performances.
Jeff Darlington [29:00]: "Roger Goodell even has to now answer these questions about the allegations of the officials favoring the Chiefs."
The hosts critique the Chiefs' dominance, with Chris highlighting Patrick Mahomes' likability and leadership, juxtaposing it against the team's perceived favoritism from officials.
Chris [31:59]: "I actually really enjoy Mahomes. He is a very normal human when you're around him."
Don La Greca introduces a segment on potential trades within the NFL, speculating on where a player like Myles Garrett might land if he were to request a trade. Suggestions include teams like the Commanders, with Chris advocating for their interest.
Chris [37:09]: "The Commanders might speed up their building process and go get someone like Myles Garrett."
Matt Miller's mock draft analysis is presented, predicting a shift in priorities with teams focusing less on quarterbacks and more on defensive talents like Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter.
Don La Greca [45:50]: "Matt Miller predicts that at number one, Tennessee will select Abdul Carter... and the Browns will take Travis Hunter at number two."
As the episode wraps up, the hosts balance discussions on both NBA and NFL topics, offering listeners a comprehensive look at major trades and upcoming games. They encourage audience interaction and tease future segments on draft predictions.
Don La Greca [51:03]: "This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. Stay tuned for more insights on the NBA and NFL."
This episode provides a deep dive into one of the most significant trades in recent NBA history, offering comprehensive analysis and lively discussions that will engage both dedicated fans and casual listeners alike.
