This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Alan Hahn
That sounds like heaven to me.
Don La Greca
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers.
Alan Hahn
So a big day in sports. You had the Knicks lose in overtime to the Celtics. And what you want to get from that, whether you feel good about the fact that the Knicks were competitive or bad that they just cannot beat a team. Can't beat the top three teams. Zero wins against the top three teams in the NBA. But they were competitive. And give Boston credit for at least looking like from a roster standpoint they were going for it. Yankees win, but Williams, not good. Gave up three runs in a non save situation in the ninth inning. But they do salvage a game in that series. Allen and the Mets, their winning streak comes to an end as they just couldn't get anything done against the Marlins in that finale. Now the Mets go out west. How about this trip? Sacramento, Minnesota. Oh, what does that do for you?
Don La Greca
That doesn't sound like hold on, does it?
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, I'm looking down for a second. No movement.
Alan Hahn
No movement.
Peter Rosenberg
No movement.
Alan Hahn
I could see from here there was no movement.
Don La Greca
When you say Sacramento, I thought like Sacramento, Minnesota is an NBA trip. That is not a baseball trip. But that's a baseball trip. That's where we are right now. Yeah.
Alan Hahn
And looking at it, it doesn't seem like the people of Sacramento have taken to this ace team.
Peter Rosenberg
I haven't seen that. How bad is it?
Alan Hahn
Not good. I mean it's a minor league ballpark and there's like flies there. I, I mean the Patriots had more for their opener yesterday and it was like zero degrees out.
Peter Rosenberg
Someone, someone's got to do a 30 for 30. I don't know if I'm. Maybe I've already missed this doc on the A's on, on just what's happened to Oakland sports fans and how messed up it is.
Don La Greca
I think there was one.
Peter Rosenberg
Was there already one?
Don La Greca
I thought I said, well, there maybe it was a mini one. It wasn't like What? The big. The big ones. I think it might have been one of the.
Peter Rosenberg
I have to. I have to interrupt. Don, look at the TV behind you real quick. I'm gonna throw out a take right here. And I'm putting Don right in a bad spot.
Alan Hahn
I'm gonna predict what you're gonna say. Why does our guy, Lee Goldberg, feel like he's gotta wear glasses that look like goggles?
Peter Rosenberg
Look at the whole thing. I want you to look at the glasses. I want you to look at the color and style of the shirt, and I want you to look at everything. Don, I know you know him and like him. I don't know him at all.
Don La Greca
Leave the man alone.
Peter Rosenberg
It looks as if he went to the store. Whatever the store is. And said, I want to look like a blank bag. That is. No, no, no, listen.
Alan Hahn
I cannot get on board with that.
Don La Greca
How.
Peter Rosenberg
What is he doing?
Alan Hahn
It's a walk.
Don La Greca
He does what he remembers.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay, I get it. You're a New York meteorologist. Settle down.
Alan Hahn
You could criticize the outfit, but you went there.
Peter Rosenberg
Look at why.
Alan Hahn
Salt of the earth.
Peter Rosenberg
He's a lovely good guy.
Don La Greca
He'll always stop and talk to you. Always. He'll put up with you asking about the weather when he's like, you know, put on the tv. You can find out.
Peter Rosenberg
No, he looks. He'll tell you, by the way, literally, the look of in is such a nice man. Like, I can tell he's a nice man. But you got Don, you have to admit, that outfit's tough. Why wouldn't someone pull him aside and go, this isn't you. Don't do this.
Don La Greca
Don't do this, Don, from now on. We should probably do that with Peter.
Peter Rosenberg
Maybe you should.
Don La Greca
We're gonna do that with you from now on.
Alan Hahn
But I could criticize a guy's look, but you went there. What, did you call him again?
Don La Greca
Yeah, he did.
Peter Rosenberg
I didn't call him anything. I said, it looks like he went into the store and said, I want to look like a blank bag. That's not the same as calling someone.
Alan Hahn
Looks like that store was successful.
Peter Rosenberg
The look is. I hate when I have.
Don La Greca
Salesperson was on point.
Peter Rosenberg
They did their. They did that, you know.
Don La Greca
Followed direction. Let me save you, Peter, by informing some Nick fans of something. I don't love this. Since I'm. Excuse me. Easy. I have made this trip to Detroit against my better judgment because it's apparently still winter. Knicks are playing the Pistons. This could be a first round matchup. Very excited to be able to call this game on MSG tomorrow. And the Knicks have already announced that OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mitchell Robinson will all be out.
Peter Rosenberg
Great, grand, wonderful.
Don La Greca
So we got that going for us. So real quick, the remaining games are back to back. Just so you understand, the other one's Cleveland the next night. Of course it's Cleveland, because you always play Cleveland. The second game of back to back. That's how the NBA scheduled this year. They're playing at home. It's the last home game of the season on Friday against the Cavaliers. Oh, regular season, I should say. The Cavs play in Indianapolis, though, the night before as well. And by the way, if the Pacers lose to the Cavs, which I'm a bit. I'm. I might call Kenny and just tell him I can't just, just lay out yet. Just get this one. Then the Knicks can clinch third. But if the Knicks, Lou, continue to lose here and the Pacers continue to win, third place is not done yet. Even though it's magic numbers one, it's not done yet, so. Oh, and how important was this game to the Celtics? Here's the list of the players who will not be playing tonight in Orlando for Boston. You ready? Drew Holiday, Al Horford, Christoph Porzingis, Jason Tatum, and Derek White. The entire starting lineup is not playing. Jalen Brown is listed as questionable, which essentially, you might as well just say, he's probably not going to play.
Peter Rosenberg
I would say so.
Don La Greca
They put everything they had. They played their guys last night knowing they weren't going to play their guys tonight.
Alan Hahn
Right. Because I think they officially locked up the two with the win against the Knicks. Right. And they can't get one nowhere to go. So that's, that's the smart move. But God, again, no offense, I've been to both cities and I find charm in both. But Detroit, Cleveland, back to back, that's. That's a little rough.
Don La Greca
Well, at least Cleveland's at the Garden.
Alan Hahn
Oh, okay.
Don La Greca
Okay. Yeah, we have the Garden on Friday. Yeah, no, it's.
Alan Hahn
Oh, no, no, no, no.
Don La Greca
Listen, going to the Garden. Quick flight, too. It's not bad. Like the, the travel itself. Not that anybody gives a crap about my travel, but it's fine. It's more or less that it's a back to back and they still need to get a win or a pace or loss, and you're seeing. They're already like, all right, we're going to sit some guys. They're already doing that. So last night feels like the last time the Knicks were really going to go all in on A game in the regular season and they went to overtime and lost.
Alan Hahn
Let's get the damn playoffs started already.
Don La Greca
Man, we're all feeling that. Yeah, because that's.
Alan Hahn
It's all. That's all the Garden's got now.
Don La Greca
Yeah, just the. Just the Knicks. At this point, it feels like the Rangers are pretty much tapped out.
Alan Hahn
And listen, I don't want to get too deep in the weeds. Gabe Perot is a healthy scratch. Why, Lavi? What do you. He's like, because sometimes it's good for a kid to sit and watch. No, sometimes it's good for a kid to just play. Let him play. Forget your season's over. I'm not mathematically eliminated. But you know what? You got a chance here to play NHL games. All value moving forward. Yeah, I get. Sometimes sit, watch.
Don La Greca
But it's not January where you might like. Hey, he'll watch a little so he can get ready and play some more. They have. What do you have, three games left? Five more games.
Alan Hahn
Well, he'll have four more games after that. Listen, he knows a lot more than I, but I just think he's a kid. He probably wants to play in a home game. You know what? Don't play. Don't play him at ubs. Sorry. Don't play him in Florida. All right. Or Carolina. You know, give the Ranger fans that are really red hot right now. There you go. To get to see your future. But. And I don't think coaches make decisions based on that, but me personally, I just think there's value in playing. I get what he's saying every once in a while, but.
Don La Greca
Donnie, doesn't the front office also have a little say in this?
Alan Hahn
I'm sure they do. And listen, Chris Drury has been in that spot, right? A young kid getting called up, but I don't think he's played poorly. Like, I could see if he completely looked like he was lost. All right, let's sit him down. We don't want to do any damage, but he's playing on the power play. I mean, the team hasn't played well, but I wouldn't blame him for it. And there is value to watching, but with so few games left, I think there's value in playing in these games. Let him get his first NHL goal. Let him. Let's have something positive happen here, which is an absolute disgrace.
Peter Rosenberg
Speaking of absolute disgrace, I don't know if anyone heard this, but I have been handed some pretty compelling audio. Michael K. Has went back onto his Chicken Tender account.
Don La Greca
Here we go.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's listen What Kay has to say.
Michael Kay
Well, Meredith, I'm glad you're giving me this opportunity. I'm here to apologize. I feel awful. I feel guilty because you know, every single person out there comes to me for the truth. They want the truth about tenders. And on my last review, I. I didn't give you the truth and I'm embarrassed and I like to be non tendered just for the last one. Here's why. As I was doing the review, the executive chef here at Comerica park was standing two feet to my right, beaming because he had put these tenders together just for me. And I let it influence me. Ashamed and I'm embarrassed. I promise you that it will never happen again. I gave Those tenders a 7, 9. They weren't. They weren't a 7, 9. I'm not going to bash it in retrospect, but it was more in the six category. It wasn't a seven, nine. I couldn't do it because I'm gutless. Because the chef was right there. Now you have to decide, do you come back to me for more tender reviews or have I betrayed your trust? I hope I haven't because I'm coming clean right now. I will never do it again. And also I partially blame Meredith. Why was the chef here? Why would you put that kind of heat on me? Just get me the tenders, let me eat them, let me review them. I don't need the guy who created the tenders standing there waiting for a score.
Don La Greca
It will never dragging Meredith into happen again. The accountability. So that he had to share the accountability. By the way, it's. You know how the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Peter Rosenberg
Right?
Don La Greca
So the whole idea of credibility, I'm sorry, it's gone. There's no going back now.
Peter Rosenberg
I got to tell you, right? He should run for president, this man. The lack of accountability after that whole thing, you. You seem like you're gonna take accountability and by the way, it's Meredith's fault.
Don La Greca
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean it's unbelievable.
Alan Hahn
So many flaws in this. First of all, he just doesn't have the stomach to do it, man. Now you just don't do it anymore. Now you just, you're out.
Peter Rosenberg
You gotta move on.
Alan Hahn
Cuz I don't have it.
Don La Greca
Delete the.
Alan Hahn
I don't have the ability to critique like that. Like I thought about doing something like that. Not a video, but like on social media about books. Because I consume a lot of books. So I figured why not do a book review?
Don La Greca
Sure.
Alan Hahn
But I don't have the stomach to do it because a lot of these people. I know, right. Usually the publishers are sending me the book for free, and I don't want to be that guy. Like they're trying to promote the book. And if I'm gonna go out there and bash it, because I just don't. I'm not a critic in that sense. I just thought it would be fun. So I decided not to do it, otherwise it's gonna be compromised. So if he's not gonna have at it, you know, the real critics, the movie critics, they'll say it to your face. This is garbage, right? Because that's what they are. They're critics. They can do it. So if you're not gonna do it, don't do it. But if you are gonna do it, then, then you know what? Don't come clean like that.
Peter Rosenberg
And the last thing I want to say about this, that really upsets me about what happened with Michael and his tender review. He's up to over 32,000 followers on Instagram already for his Chicken Tendy account. There is someone out there in our orbit who is doing some incredible food reviews, and that man is Christopher Carlin.
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Chris's Corner. On Chris's Instagram page is some of the most wonderful, warm, feel good content you could find.
Alan Hahn
Carl's Corner table.
Peter Rosenberg
Exactly. What did I say?
Alan Hahn
Carlin's Corner.
Peter Rosenberg
Carlin's Corner.
Alan Hahn
You made it into like a post game, A baseball post game.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right.
Alan Hahn
Now let's go to Carlin's Corner. Tom Sieber, how's the wing?
Don La Greca
So good.
Peter Rosenberg
Chris's Corner. I got it wrong twice. Anyways, we love Chris. Chris's Carlin's Corner table is tremendous and he deserves all that.
Don La Greca
Brought to you by Schaefer Beer.
Peter Rosenberg
Exactly. And Ben said it. Hedges. But so that bothers me too. Now, speaking of fraudulence, not just for Michael K. How about it's already been a rough, rough few weeks for Rick Patino. Did you guys happen to hear this over the last 24 hours?
Don La Greca
Well, as a kid I used to go watch Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, even reserves like Hector Lopez, Johnny Blanchard, Kubeck, Richardson, Cletus Boyer, one of the great third baseman of all time. Whitey fought on the mound, Yogi. And you grow up as a youngster sitting in the bleacher seats, I think for $1.18 at the time, if I can remember, with my two girl cousins while I lived with my grandmother in the Bronx. But I was always a Met fan of Kuzman. And Seaver and going back to Tommy ag. And I'm one of the few people that rooted for both teams. Anything with, with NY on it, I'm 100% behind it. Certainly. Donovan Mitchell has worked with the Mets for a long period of time, and I love Donovan Jr. As well as senior.
Alan Hahn
Why? Well, while he's wearing a Met jersey.
Peter Rosenberg
He was wearing a Met jersey.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. Just so don't.
Don La Greca
He had to play the game. This is playing the breakup.
Alan Hahn
Don't play the game.
Don La Greca
He had to play the game. Clearly there's something that they're doing, the little collaboration or something, and he's just. He's got to play the game and give you that whole, you know, the, the, the that, that spiel. But, but he, he talks Yankees fluently. We know this.
Peter Rosenberg
We know this.
Alan Hahn
So he's a fraud.
Don La Greca
I. I'm not gonna say fraud. I'm gonna say. Just.
Alan Hahn
Why aren't you gonna say fraud? You just don't want to be accurate.
Peter Rosenberg
That means you're a fraud. If you won't say fraud, it means you're a fraud.
Alan Hahn
Takes one to no one.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, my God.
Don La Greca
See, I'm out of the building for a day.
Alan Hahn
Well, but I don't understand how you would. Could defend.
Don La Greca
Know what he's doing here. He's got to play the that.
Peter Rosenberg
But that's what a fraud is.
Don La Greca
Where is that from, by the way? What is that? Where was that from?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know. Mets. Was it from Snyder? I'm finding out right now it's clearly.
Don La Greca
Like a Mets thing.
Peter Rosenberg
It might have been a Met thing.
Don La Greca
You know, he knows he's got to just let me. Let me give him a little something.
Alan Hahn
No, but here's why I'm going to. See, I don't. I don't deal in treetops. I go all in.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right.
Alan Hahn
He. The way he described all the players, that was the tail end of the dynasty. Kubeck is the perfect example. Right?
Don La Greca
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
They win the series in 62, and then they get swept by the Dodgers in 63. And now it started to fade. The 60s were not good. And then late in the 60s, all of a sudden, Seaver Kuzman, the mets are winning 69. He's like, oh, the Yankees aren't good anymore. I'm going to root for the Mets.
Don La Greca
You're saying he flipped?
Alan Hahn
Oh, he flipped until all of a sudden the 70s came and the Mets started to fade. In the late 70s, Yankees came back and he flipped back. And now, because it's been so long, because he's old as dirt. It's just. I don't even remember anymore. I just like both teams, but there's the fraudulency right there. Right there. Oh, great team dynasty. Oh, there's a new team that's starting to win, and the Yankees are old and they're losing. I'll become a Met fan. That's the definition of. It's pure.
Peter Rosenberg
It's pure fraud.
Alan Hahn
It's uncut, cold.
Peter Rosenberg
It's the real fraud. No, this is the re. You know what? You know what I'd like to respond to him by saying again?
Don La Greca
Donovan Mitchell played for him at Louisville, Right? Like, you know, his father, like, worked with the Mets. Like, this is a personal relationship, and.
Peter Rosenberg
He'S just one of my thousand players that I coach.
Alan Hahn
Family. Michael, for 22 years. Am I rooting for the angles?
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, boy.
Alan Hahn
Point.
Peter Rosenberg
God. Now, real quick, you know what I want to say to Patino sometime? I got to tell you, man, you are my absolute number one favorite college coach of all time. I mean, I root for you. Yeah. I root for you and Calipari. Like, you and Coach Cal are just my two. I root for you, and I root for Coach Cal. And besides that, I mean, those are. I'm sorry. I just love great college basketball. I love coaches who came up in the 80s and 90s. You're my two guys.
Don La Greca
I see what you're doing.
Peter Rosenberg
I root for you both. Would he feel good, or would he think I'm a fraud?
Don La Greca
No, he'd hate that because he's the last guy he'd want you to also, like, huh?
Peter Rosenberg
Interesting.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Interesting.
Alan Hahn
But he goes way back to, I did my.
Don La Greca
I did my best to defend him. I did my best. I. I even took the arrows from you guys as well.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know why.
Don La Greca
As far as I can go, this is.
Peter Rosenberg
He doesn't even defend his own players. Why are you defending him? But. But.
Alan Hahn
But why? But again, I. It's not pejorative. Some of my best friends are frauds.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right.
Alan Hahn
But it's fraud. He's a fraud. By my definition, he's a fraud.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, Don, I have good news for you.
Alan Hahn
You don't have to defend them. It can't be defended.
Peter Rosenberg
I have good news for you. I have been talking, unbeknownst to you, to the powers that be here at the radio program. We feel we need more fraud. More fraud conversation, more fraud delineation, more fraud expertise. We are starting a segment. It's more than a segment. It's more a theme on the Friday show.
Don La Greca
I like this.
Peter Rosenberg
Where anyone out there, you have a question, you have a friend in your life who's shown fraudulent behavior. We have an email address, dhrespnmail.com dhrespnmail.com we also have phone lines, which you can call. And throughout Friday's show, we'll be doing something called Fraud Alert Friday, where you, Don legreco, will make the final delineation.
Don La Greca
The fraud judge.
Peter Rosenberg
He is the judge, jury, and executioner. And executioner. When it comes to frauds, I'm a fraud with a capital F. And we will hear about. You have to mention the whole thing might be dedicated to Pitino on Friday. This is one of the great fraudulent conversations you ever heard. No, easily.
Alan Hahn
I was gonna say, if you're somebody out there that's like Patino and you wanted to call and wondered what I would think, you don't have to call.
Peter Rosenberg
Exactly.
Alan Hahn
But if you are someone where there's a little nuance to it, that's.
Peter Rosenberg
That's what we're looking for.
Don La Greca
Well, didn't we have the one guy who said that he was a Yankees fan that became a Mets fan? And you said, what if your son had a Yankee? He said, I'd smack it off his head.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, that's Sam Diaz. And he sent the video.
Peter Rosenberg
He sent the video smacking the hat off his child's head.
Alan Hahn
And it wasn't as graphic as you would think.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Alan Hahn
Still rude. And it's.
Don La Greca
Listen, I grew up in a house where I was the black sheep. I turned on everything that my parents rooted for, which doesn't really happen. They were Mets fans. They might. They would watch Met games every day. Scream and yell and go crazy. And I would. Me. It's PIX11. I got the Yankees. I want. I want to hear Rizzuto. Right? That's what. That's what I was about. For whatever reason, I was right. And then it was the Islanders and Rangers thing. They would watch the range. They did. They refused to pay for Sports Channel. Remember when there was Sports Channel and MSG were. And they wouldn't pay for Sports Channel, so the only time I saw the Islanders on television was on channel 9. W r. When they played road games, Home games. I was listening on the radio. Barry Landers. Barry Landers and John Podfit. The great John Potman.
Peter Rosenberg
The only Potvin I recognize.
Don La Greca
Stop it. So, like, that's the house I grew.
Peter Rosenberg
Up in, by the way.
Don La Greca
Is this trying to tell me I'm a fraud?
Peter Rosenberg
Is this an early sign, Don, of the fact that Alan's a bad guy. Like, he just, he just decided to troll.
Alan Hahn
You've already made that decision.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, it's been becoming more and more clear as things come up. And is this. He decided at a young age, I'm gonna troll my entire family.
Don La Greca
That's not how it went down.
Peter Rosenberg
It's what it feels like.
Don La Greca
Didn't go down like that.
Peter Rosenberg
You didn't decide on some level, whatever.
Don La Greca
These people say, I was a. I was a child.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm doing the opposite.
Don La Greca
I was a child. I just, I like this. I don't need to follow you. I want to do my thing. And to their credit, they let me.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, John, go crazy.
Don La Greca
Didn't yell at me. It's okay. That's your choice.
Peter Rosenberg
I got news for you. John Wayne Gacy was a child. At some point, you know what?
Don La Greca
I don't know if. But I was going there.

It may be hard for many of you listening to believe this, but Tomorrow would be 35 years since the release of the debut album from who I believe to be one of the greatest groups in the history of American music. And that would be a Tribe Called Quest hall of Famers and. Yeah, that's right, Rock and Roll hall of Famers, friends of us here at the radio station, and my close personal friend, the wonderful, the talented Q Tip from A Tribe Called Quest joins us right now. Tipster. It's Peter, Don and Alan. How you doing, buddy bros?
Q-Tip
How you guys doing?
Alan Hahn
Happy anniversary, man.
Q-Tip
What? Thank you. I appreciate it. How are you, Don?
Alan Hahn
I'm doing well, man. I don't hear from you anymore since the jets have just taken your soul.
Q-Tip
Well, you know, it's hard to crawl out of the crib, you know, but there's this spring on the way, which means, you know, there's a draft coming and we got a, we got some new gm, new coach and kind of new old coach and we'll see what's happening. What's up, Mr. Hahn?
Don La Greca
What's happening? We have, we have Justin Fields.
Q-Tip
Big fan.
Don La Greca
Oh, right back at you. Justin Fields spoke today. I'm looking forward to hearing what he had to say. New quarterback, which feels like every other year for the jets, right?
Q-Tip
It kind of does. Right. Like, I'm really hoping that we can get this thing right. It's hard to, to fathom, you know, all props to, to Willie Joe. Oh, Joe, Willie. But you know, we got to get a 4,000 yard passes. We gotta get some W's, man. We gotta get some wins. I kind of feel like Aaron Glenn has democracy. You know, we got the Parcellian effect there. Great coaching tree. And let's, let's just see what happens, man?
Peter Rosenberg
You. So you. You gave up pretty early this year, like, you. And it might have been, what was it, three or four weeks in Tip, when you were like, I'm done. Like, this is not happening this year. What was it so early that let you know? Like, this was just. Even if Rogers was seemingly healthy, it was just not going to happen for the Jets.
Q-Tip
I mean, as soon as Salah got fired, I was just like, what? You know what I mean? It was kind of like Homer Simpson meme, you know, going back into the bushes backwards. It was like. It was kind of like, I'm not gonna do this to myself this fall. I'm not gonna, like, beat myself up. I'm gonna have to, like, take a couple of weeks, you know, I have to kind of, like, calm down so I can enjoy some semblance of some football, man.
Peter Rosenberg
So wait, but when you say you. When you say you did that, this is always what interests me about, like, obsessive football fans. And you're as obsessive a Jets and football fan as I know. When you say you're going to take a step back, how did that actually play out in your life? Like, did you outright skip games or you just didn't have the same mental commitment?
Q-Tip
I just didn't watch for a couple of weeks, man. I went to go, you know, I went to a couple of, you know, I went to Yankees, Dodgers, World Series there.
Don La Greca
Oh, that made you feel better?
Q-Tip
Yeah, right? I mean, the only saving grace is that I wear with my boy Paul Simon shouts out to Queens and all that.
Peter Rosenberg
Wait, wait, hold on. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Let him have it. Wait, Tip, hold on, hold on. Tip, hold on. When you say you went with him, do you mean that you guys sat next to each other because the Yankees put you there or, like, as. As friends together?
Q-Tip
I'm really cool. Paul and Sons and. Yeah, we're Yankee fans, you know.
Peter Rosenberg
So you and I have never discussed this. Do you understand the importance that it's lit? Yo, Tip. Yesterday. No, no, I'm not gonna.
Don La Greca
Sure, he's gonna. Schnur.
Peter Rosenberg
Yesterday on my Instagram, yesterday, on my inst. I put up. This is so funny, and it's crazy. You've never mentioned that. So I put up a story, and it's a screenshot of Midnight Marauders and lyrics to Go is playing. Oh, no, no. The order. I got the order wrong. It was the Graceland album, and I wrote on the stories. I wrote. If I was stuck on an island with one album, this is in the conversation. And it was a picture of the Graceland cover. Five minutes. Five minutes later, I posted the Midnight Marauders cover with lyrics to go playing. And I said, but it's probably this. That is so wild.
Q-Tip
I didn't know that, man. Well, hopefully that kind of magnetism could play out for the jets this year, man.
Peter Rosenberg
God bless you.
Q-Tip
We could get some wins.
Alan Hahn
You know, on that note, since you brought up, like, Paul Simon, I've always wondered, like, in sports, like, Pat Riley wrote a book about coaching that every coach in every sport has read. Cause even though they may not be basketball coaches, they can relate because coaching's coaching, right? Is it the same for music that here's Paul Simon legend, folk become pop artists, and here you're in the hip hop world, but you're both musicians. Can you still relate even though different genre, different generations. Can you still talk the commonality of music?
Q-Tip
Oh, yeah, absolutely. Because, I mean, if you make it analogous to sports, right, like, you know, you look at it, you take a basketball player and you take a football player, for instance, and there's a certain regimen you follow. There's some roach, there's some repetition. You know, there's a guideline you have to do to work, to. To hone your craft, you know what I mean? And that, that could be in anything that you, you know, that you have an apprentice of. So, yeah, so he and I related on music and, you know, things we like and, you know, how we go about doing things, how you go about recording. It's just like, you know, how, I guess Aaron Judge would go about to prepare for a season and what he does with body and his mind and his regimen and what he does before a game and stuff like that. So it's pretty analogous.
Peter Rosenberg
Are you feeling. What's your level of optimism for the Knicks heading into the playoffs here?
Q-Tip
Well, I mean, it was a tough loss last night. Jalen is getting back. What was his minutes last night when he had 30, but 30 they went to over.
Don La Greca
Stand back. I could tell you, top of my head, 38 minutes.
Q-Tip
Yeah. 24 points. What? Oh, 27. Well, I think as he goes, so goes the Knicks. Right? Because, I mean, I mean, we love Cat, what he's been bringing. And Mitch has been, you know, he's been. He's been. He's been looking all right. You know, usually after an injury with him, he still seems like he's still a little bit gimpy. Shouts out to Mitch, though, you know, but Jalen is the. Is the. You know, is the straw that stirs the drink. Shout out, Reggie. Reggie Jackson. But, you know, I think that it depends, man. I mean, we're. Right now, currently, we're sitting at three. Maybe tonight we may. Depending on what Indiana does. We may. You know, they win.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Q-Tip
We dropped a four. What is that?
Don La Greca
Not yet. Yeah. Not. Not. Not quite yet. But it's. It's. It's kind of getting too close. It's one loss by the Pacers.
Q-Tip
If it was to end today.
Don La Greca
Who.
Alan Hahn
You're good.
Peter Rosenberg
You're in the. You're in the three.
Don La Greca
Play Detroit. Yeah.
Q-Tip
Detroit is tough.
Peter Rosenberg
Detroit is tough. Some people. Some people might prefer Milwaukee. It depends who you ask.
Q-Tip
Yeah, I think. I think Milwaukee would probably. Detroit is.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, no tip.
Don La Greca
He said Detroit is. And I'm like, I'm hanging on this.
Peter Rosenberg
This could be so many different things, right?
Don La Greca
What is.
Peter Rosenberg
Detroit is. It's. It's Motor City.
Don La Greca
Yeah. You know Motown. No, I think he's gonna say 313.
Alan Hahn
Tough. Detroit.
Don La Greca
Well, physically tough.
Peter Rosenberg
And I do wonder that has become. The conversation is like, ah, you really don't want Detroit. But, like, do you really want.
Don La Greca
Before we get him back, Peter, is it wrong for me to ask him a music question that I've always wondered about a lyric that he once said?
Peter Rosenberg
Why would. I can't imagine it would.
Don La Greca
Because I don't know. Because I don't know if it's appropriate. I do want to ask him about the 90s, though, because there's something about the music, and the New York scene was such a. Like, the sports scene and music was such a great vibe.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, again, I don't know exactly what you. You're going to ask, but I have to assume. Don, it feels like a very safe question, doesn't it?
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don La Greca
Like, I'm sure you could answer it, but I've always wondered this because I've said it a million times. I've always, like, I don't know what this means, but I. But I love saying it. It's the ad Rocks down with the Ione. What does that mean?
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, Ione skies. His wife. That was the dumbest question ever asked. I'm so glad I saved that question.
Don La Greca
Is that a really dumb question? I didn't know that.
Alan Hahn
Well, if you don't know that, how can it be a dumb question?
Don La Greca
That's what I mean. I wanted to know, by the way. Always, like, that's so cool. Like, what does that mean? That sounds.
Peter Rosenberg
It sounds cool to say, totally busting your chops. No, it's a Totally reasonable question. Wait.
Don La Greca
Because he found a way to rhyme it to Chachi and Joni, which is like amazing, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, it made sense when you think about it. That's Ione sky. Now, don't ask how we got there, Tip, but you were on. You were on the Ione sky.
Don La Greca
But I'm so glad I didn't ask that question.
Peter Rosenberg
But you were on the verge of saying Detroit is blank, and then we lost you.
Q-Tip
Oh, wow. Well, Detroit is tough, you know, and the younger, fast, you know, they athletic and Cade is just coming into his own. You know, they got a mean backcourt there and it's just really solid coaches. They're tough out.
Don La Greca
You sound nervous. So you sound nervous.
Q-Tip
I mean, I'm a little nervous. I mean, because, you know, I want. I want Jalen at no minute restrictions. And I understand.
Peter Rosenberg
Don't worry. He's got the right coach for it.
Q-Tip
You think? I mean, our coach is extra minute.
Peter Rosenberg
Exactly, exactly.
Q-Tip
But you know, it's funny because you never would have to worry about that back in the days. You know what I mean? Like, I mean, if it's today, you know, you know, Michael Ray Richardson, if he's healthy, he's playing every game, every minute of every game. You know what I'm saying?
Don La Greca
Because that's what they wanted. Players wanted to play or want to play.
Q-Tip
Yeah, yeah. I don't, you know, it's just a lot. It's. It's weird because you would expect, you know, today's athlete to be maybe 3 inches higher, about 10 more, you know, pounds of muscle mass and be able to go further than the athlete yesterday. But those guys, and they got the best footwear and all of this stuff, but, you know, guys are getting bone spurs and, and Achilles and I don't know what it is, but anyway, I, you know, I feel like as Jalen go.
Don La Greca
So we go, it's like cars, cars. Back in the day, you get 200,000 miles on a car today. That's right. Three years in, you turn it around, they're better, technology's better, but it's not. They're just not built the same.
Q-Tip
No, it built. It built out of plastic.
Don La Greca
Exactly.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, now we got to ask you a couple music things related to the to tribe, of course, because it is 35 years, which is super cool. And tomorrow is your birthday. Happy early birthday, tipster.
Q-Tip
Thanks.
Peter Rosenberg
Then you were like 18 years old, 19 years old, working on this album.
Don La Greca
It's crazy.
Peter Rosenberg
Did you. Did you guys have. Or did you guys have an idea early on, any of you how serious you were going to ultimately be in music? Or were you sort of toying around when you made people's instinctive travels?
Q-Tip
Oh, well, we did. I did. I did a lot of that when I was 15. Actually. I got the Benito when I was 15. 14. Yeah. And throughout high school, I, you know, I was kind of stitching it together and, you know, getting a lot of the ideas together. So it was a couple of years in the making. So by the time we got to do it, it was pretty quick and we knew what we wanted to do, but, you know, it wasn't. Yeah, we wasn't really toying around, as you said. I mean, you know, we were honing it. We were honing it, was working and doing all the things, you know, it.
Don La Greca
Was like, for me, growing up on Long island, it was like a sound that. That I was drawn to. And the timing of it for me was so perfect because it was. I still think, like, that's the heyday of hip hop. But for me, I also connected because you guys were from. Were local, you were from around the way. Like, you know, De La Soul was literally, like in, you know, two. Two towns over and, you know, Jungle Brothers and Leaders of the New School. I mean, those guys, Hempstead and all that stuff like that, that helped me connect even more. But for you guys to all find each other and have that sound and then like, the different collabs you guys did and all that stuff, as Peter was saying, it is amazing to think that something that probably started as for you guys was just a vibe turning into an industry, literally. Like, you couldn't have. You couldn't have it even anticipated what it turned into, right?
Q-Tip
No way. I mean, you. You know, you have your. You have your. Your aspirations. But I guess, you know, because you're a teenager, you know, you're gullible in essence, and naive, which is a good thing. So you don't really expect it to kind of turn into what it turned into, you know what I'm saying? So it was definitely. It definitely wasn't anything that any of us have foresight about.
Alan Hahn
Now you're older, more experienced, and I'm sure, more talented than you were when you were a teenager. So. So if you were to go back, all that talent could make that album better. But was the rawness and the inexperience what made that album click?
Q-Tip
Yeah, I think. I think it was the. The rawness, the inexperience. I think that there was a. There was, I guess, a novelty to what we were doing that was interesting at the time, you know, and a lot of it, hip hop was still pretty much underground. You're talking about, about in 1990. So 10 years prior, you know, everybody's still listening to like the first rap record, Sugar Hill gang, 10 years in, 10 years earlier, which is relatively new, you know what I mean? And at the same time, which is interesting that hip hop was coming out of New York. There was the, the New York punk rock scene too, which kind of like was going on in the same way. So it was just, it was just a product of being, I think being in the right place geographically and just youth and just all the, you know, those combinations that kind of led it to be what it is. But I don't think anybody really. Yeah, I wouldn't, I wouldn't trade it, you know, I definitely wouldn't. Time Machine back with what I know.
Don La Greca
Now the tax deadline is almost here and Taxact has live experts to help answer any last minute questions you may have. Questions like can I claim my SUV as my home office? If I answer work emails in my car?
Alan Hahn

I mean it's one of the greatest songs ever made. Real quick guys. Game Time brought to you by Tullamore. Do Irish Whiskey because when it's game time, it's Tully time.
Don La Greca
Oh yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Mets Marlins and Yankees Tigers. They played afternoon games. What would what happened in those games?
Don La Greca
I should have looked up the Marlins beat the Mets 2 nothing and the.
Peter Rosenberg
Yankees got a win 4 nothing. Right?
Don La Greca
Wait, wait, wait. I had to update 43 Yankee win because they couldn't hold the lead. The Marlins won five nothing. I'm. I don't know why I said two blank. The Mets and the the Yankees had a four nothing lead into the ninth. Devin Williams struggled, ended up four three. Mark Leiter had to come in to actually get the last out. So some some Devin Williams anxiety. Already shaved the beard already tell them.
Peter Rosenberg
Or do the original triple distilled, triple blended and triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Tullamore do or try the new Tullamore Dew. Honey, during today's action, glasses up to enjoying Tullamore Dew responsibly.
Don La Greca
You know, Don, I'm kind of enjoying this just, just being like, you know, just. Just being part of the gallery, you know.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, dude. There's a lot of upside to not having to read.
Don La Greca
Just shouting out stuff and just saying.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a lot crazy. And by the way, it used to be even more. But that's neither here nor there. Real quick, we got Q Tip back on the phone. Tip. We lost you. It's all good. Before we close out, we're wrapping up the hour here, but I did ask you a deep emotional question. And then you disappeared, which we thought Don thought was dramatic pause. And then you were just gone.
Q-Tip
It's this technology here.
Peter Rosenberg
Just. It's the matrix. What I was saying was we're celebrating 35 years of the first album after hours, my favorite record. Listening to you. The way you describe Fife, like loud in the streets, yelling about sports. It always hits me with such like a real personal feeling. All these years now after we lost your brother Fife, I'm just curious. I don't know if you go back and hear the album, but when you hear a record like that and those images that I find to be so powerful and emotive. Can you listen to it? How emotional is it going back and listening to stuff like that?
Q-Tip
Yeah, I mean it definitely has that has that elicits that emotion that. The remembrance and all of that. You know, I don't really listen to what I've done before, but sometimes I may catch it arbitrarily if I'm out somewhere and somebody's playing something and I've heard that before. So it definitely transports you back for sure.
Peter Rosenberg
I always thought it was funny too. Everyone who listens to Tribe Called Quest guys knows that fife is a huge sports head Tip. Not everybody knew that you were basically as Big a sports fan as fife.
Q-Tip
Oh, yeah. I mean, we were. Yeah, that, that was our thing. We like the same things. Yankees, Jets, Knicks, Rangers. I mean, you know that. That was the line up there. How are we going to do the Yankees this year? Are we just gonna hand this thing over to the Dodgers? Like, they might as well just give it to him now.
Peter Rosenberg
That's what it feels like right now, man.
Q-Tip
Oh, my God. It's. It's. It's just disgusting.
Peter Rosenberg
Singing New York, New York on the field at Yankee Stadium. Like, you can't have that.
Q-Tip
What do you think it done?
Alan Hahn
Get out of the American League first before you worry about the Dodgers. Right. I mean, I understand the American League is. Looks like a cakewalk, but just be careful. Red Sox, you know, are still there. I think the Orioles have a ton of good young players. And then we'll see what the Texas Rangers are. They won the World Series a couple of years ago. I think the Yankees are going to be fine. But the Dodgers. Yeah, but even it's baseball, right? They've lost a couple of games in a row now. So just. You got to get there.
Q-Tip
It's a long season.
Alan Hahn
It's a long, long season. Look at the Mets last year. I'm telling in June. I'm saying sell everybody off, and next thing you know, they're.
Peter Rosenberg
They're exactly a tip. We love you, man. Thank you for making time. Happy birthday. Happy anniversary. We'll talk to you soon.
Q-Tip
Love you guys.
Peter Rosenberg
Later, buddy. There he is, the legend, the Rock and Roll hall of Famer, the great Q tip from A Tribe Called Quest, Queen's finest.
