B
Hey, did you guys see the Frankie Focus mascot at the.
C
I don't know how to feel.
E
I heard you're a big fan.
B
Introduced today to some kids. Frankie Focus. You know, cuz all the students now you have to put your phones away.
C
That's a good.
B
Which is fine.
E
Yeah. Something.
B
But they decided to bring a mascot to a middle school here in New York City. Well, we need a mascot for something like this. And by the way, it's the creepiest, weirdest looking man. Like who's this is your tax dollars at work. What are we doing?
C
What do you do?
B
Like, isn't there anybody in that cabinet? That's as. This is being like spitballed. Right? We're storyboarding this. Just somebody raise your hand. Go. Hey, let's not do that.
C
Well, help me out for a second.
B
As the kids would say, it was.
C
Cringe because Alan, you've got older kids and younger. What age should they have a cell phone?
B
It's a great question. Cali's 10 and we're not. We're not there. Okay, Gracie, we're saying no to that. Gracie got it younger, but because she was on a bus by herself.
C
Okay.
B
And we thought it was just. Just to have a phone to stay and talk, like that kind of thing. And then we would just like when she didn't need it, we took it away. But the I. I can't imagine from seeing it like there's an iPad and every kid has an iPad. And we've also tried to dial that back, but for me personally, not until high school.
C
All right.
B
Because when do you need it? You need it when you're sensitive and you're alone. You need to text me when it's time to pick you up. And that's not until you're going to like after school practice in high school.
C
What's the average age that having a cell phone at school and it being a distraction. What's the average age?
E
I bet it's happening.
B
Elementary school, seven, eight years old. It could be the third grade, the fourth grade.
C
They've got, well, fourth grade, that's 10.
B
Because like was nine.
C
Well, Jalen and Marco are seven and they're in second grade. So I guess they'll be in fourth grade. They'll be going on 10.
B
Yeah.
C
Like, my point is, is if you got like a Sesame street kind of looking character, like, is that going to be relatable to the kids that have the problem with the phone? Are they going to look at that and go, what are we doing? You know, I mean, I know, I know we as parents think our kids are going to be into all the kiddie stuff. Like, I find myself, like some of the things we're taking the kids to. I almost think that it's doing it for me and the nostalgia than them, like, do they even want to go to Sesame Place anymore? Or do I want to go because I have fun there?
E
Because you've taken the kids.
C
It's memories of when I took them, when they were 2, 3. Like, at what point, like dragging your 13 year old, you know, to go see Bluey and you're like, you know what? You've got the problem, brother.
E
I don't, I don't think the mascot is gonna hit.
C
I don't think that's my point. The mask. And again, could probably tweet it out. It's. It's a Muppet looking like a furry green.
B
It's got glasses on, it's got like Yoda ears, but it's all hairy. Like, you know, like you would have a Muppet or Sesame street character.
C
Right?
B
So it's a monster looking thing with glasses and his dopey smile. And that's supposed to get kids encouraged to go, well, Frankie Focus doesn't need his phone. I don't either.
C
Right. I know you. I know as parents you don't want to let go. That's Frankie Focus. Oh, I know you want to focus that your child there's always going to be five or six, but there's going to be some point where this, this isn't hitting. This is actually laughable.
B
This was laughable.
C
It kind of, kind of came across.
B
This felt laughable.
C
So, anyway, also laughable. The Giants offense, very familiar. And it's a joke that wasn't funny two years ago, and it certainly isn't funny today. All right, no touchdowns, zero production in the red zone. So of course, Giant fans are all thinking, we'll get Jackson Dart to play. Look how great he played in the preseason. He could be creative. We should do something. Well, that's not going to happen. Russell Wilson is going to be the quarterback. Week two in Dallas against the Cowboys. Now, Darius Slayton, who is the longest tenured New York Giant, was asked his thoughts about Jackson Dart and the Russell Wilson situation.
F
I think that's the natural thing these days, you know, in the sport of football, which is unfortunate at all levels of football, even at the college level, the pro level, is that everybody wants new as soon as they think that things aren't going well. But the reality is, is that things take time. And not everything is just a 911 situation. You know, we have good coaches, we have good quarterback and Russell Wilson and, you know, it's one week, you know, and I think in the history of football, if you kind of look at the history of football, it hasn't, it hasn't always served people well to just throw people in the fire, because I wouldn't want to be throwing the fire like that. You know, obviously Jackson believes in himself. He's obviously believes he's a good football player. We believe he's a good football player. But at the same time, this league is hard. This league is tough. And you know, you see players get chewed up and spit out all the time by this league, which is something I would never want to happen to him. So, you know, as far as all that goes, like I said, he said, russ is our starter. Russ our starter is for however long, whatever. And he's playing, he's going to play good ball, we're going to play good balls in offense. And whenever Jackson's time come, it comes.
C
Now, what that tells me is, is that they still have faith in their quarterback, Russell Wilson.
B
It also tells me, though, that as a room, they're not ready to jump to the kid right away for various reasons. One of them could be the fact that they, they know he's like, this is not the situation to put a kid like that in.
C
Right?
B
They, like veterans, will Recognize we are not in a place where a kid should come in and start now. It doesn't mean it won't happen during the season where, yeah, it's now. We should put them out there. But he's. As a veteran, he's been illegal a long time. He's recognizing this is not the time. Not now.
C
No. And also, there might be a little selfishness on Slayton's part of, hey, I'm a veteran, and I don't know if I want to, like, throw a season of my career away by having to babysit a young quarterback. I'd like to see if maybe Russell Wilson, the quarterback, was better. He thought he was better, but that. But I think he knows as a veteran that that's not the case. It's change for change sake. Right. So let's wait and see. You're taking on Dallas. Dallas doesn't have a strong defense. See if the Giants at least can play a little bit better offensively and then give you a reason to believe. All right, well, we'll see what happens against Kansas City. Tough spot for the Giants because Dallas is always a difficult place to play. And Dallas is still a good football team. They hung with the Eagles, for God's sakes, last Thursday. And they're going to be rested, right. Because they haven't played since Thursday. So they'll get the de facto by. And then you might in week three, Peter, take on a 02 chief team because what, the Chiefs are playing the Eagles this week, Right?
E
Yep.
C
So how do you think that's going to go for the Giants? It's. It's. It's not great, but I just thought I just need it to look better. I go, put up 28 points against Dallas, you lose the game. 31. 28. I'll go. You know what?
B
I think we're all right.
E
Well, you just said you said it. It was nice that you said it, but you didn't mean it.
C
Mm.
E
Or you meant it in a dream way. You didn't mean it like, oh, that could happen way.
C
No, I said, you're not buying this. I.
E
28 points against Dallas.
C
Well, Dallas, I get it. Again, I'm not saying it's gonna happen. And I'm not saying. No, I'm not predicting it. Good. It's just. But if you do, then you're not making any changes, right? Even if you lose the game, you score 28 points. All right. No, you feel good. Maybe Thomas plays. Wilson plays a little bit better. Not a great defense. Dallas has. So, you know, maybe Maybe you score a few.
E
Man, listen, I'm. No, I'm not Dan Orlovsky. I didn't play in the NFL, but I've been watching quarterback play for a long time.
B
You're a non player. You have a non player.
E
I'm a non. I'm a non player. Which means I'm somewhere between rat and cockroach in the sports media landscape.
C
No, shouldn't be that way.
B
Depends on your perspective. But.
E
But I've been watching quarterback play for about pushing 40 years now. About 40. 41 years.
C
40.
E
Yeah. Now I caught up with you, Don. Now I've been watching 40 years. Russell Wilson, even if they protect him a bit more, just the way the ball looks coming out of his hand now, he is not the guy he was. There's no, there's no version where he's turning back into old Russell Wilson.
B
You do know that Denver ate a ton of money just to say, play for us.
E
Just say, we're good.
B
Think about that. They gave him a huge contract and then parking spot and an office.
E
Right.
B
And saw him play and then went, keep the money.
C
We're all set.
B
Don't come back.
E
Yeah.
B
And then does anything else need to be said?
E
Right. And then Pittsburgh, who didn't know what they were going to do, they had a hope they could maybe get. Rogers still said, we're all set.
B
Yeah, we're good.
C
Yeah.
E
So those are. By the way, I want to be clear, the two organizations who said we're all set on Russell Wilson were the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
B
Two quarterback needy franchises.
E
No, no, not only that, and two franchises who live in the upper echelon of just solid NFL franchises. Denver, not as much as Pittsburgh, but still pretty consistently there in the competition.
B
Sean Payton knows what he's looking at, though.
E
Usually. But I mean, and here in New York, the Giants go, we like this. Well, it was a game. Give me Winston while we're at it.
B
Preseason, he didn't. Wilson was decent in preseason. He didn't see a lot of them, but he was decent. And again, we looked at the schedule and the feeling was just give me somebody who's capable. And you remember. But using it, he at least was capable, but it wasn't nearly enough.
C
Right. And now the Denver thing, he was a diva. He still thought he was the, you know, the super bowl quarterback, but if he'd been good, but if he was, okay. But they realized they could do better with Aaron Rodgers. So I'm not asking Russell Wilson to get this team into the playoffs. I Just want him to play well enough to keep Dart on the bench.
E
The move is Jameis Winston.
C
Well, it might be.
E
The move is James.
C
It might be, but I don't.
B
You're right. I think the next move is Jameis Winston. If you're going to make a change, that's changed.
C
But this is why it's not going to happen. Because Jameis Winston isn't even the backup quarterback.
B
It doesn't matter.
C
All right, you say that it doesn't.
E
Matter, but they can switch it.
B
He's been in the league for 10 years. He could just step in. It doesn't matter.
C
Need to give a reason. Why am I demoting Dart? I start the season, he's backing up Russell Wilson. But now why do you need a reason?
E
The reason isn't as simple as. Hey, kid, listen, here's the deal. Nothing's changing about what you're doing. We're not ready to go to you yet.
C
Why wasn't Winston the backup to Wilson?
B
Because you want the kid to have that line.
C
You still want that, but now it can happen. Because it's not like Russell Wilson is going to be deactivated. He's not going to become the backup to Winston. If you're not wanting Dart to play, so why did you have to do it? All I'm asking is if the long term plan was as we all hoped would be, is that Dart wouldn't play for a while. But yet this regime decided to make him the backup quarterback. Why? Because I guess they wanted to honor his. His preseason. They didn't want to seem like they were. Tone, death to his preseason. Let's elevate him. Beat out Winston. But if you don't think the kid's ready by making him the backup quarterback and having him dressed for games means he is one play away from becoming your starting quarterback. If you're not ready for that to happen, then why is he backing up Wilson?
E
But hasn't the point been that. You already said earlier in the show, because this is overall a bad regime. They didn't get it right.
B
And this is why I wouldn't go there.
E
Well, hold on. I'm saying what Don said. Don said he would have blown up. He would have moved on from naval.
B
I understand.
E
So isn't it possible the guy who you would have already moved on from is not getting this right? Because think about it. You're not demoting Jackson Dart. You're keeping Jackson Dart in the exact same spot. I would just swap Wilson and Winston.
C
Okay, you could do that.
E
You leave them in the exact same spot. Winston, now you're in street clothes. Jameis Winston is our quarterback. And then you keep Dart. You, we still think you're ready to be the backup. We don't think you're ready to be the starter.
B
I honestly think that that could be the. Well, first the plan is Russell's decent enough to carry you to the point to then when you want to hand the baton. And then Jameis becomes the. Because then you move on from Russ, you trade him whatever it is. And then Winston is the easy long term backup. But I think if he struggles another week and you feel like there's just, there's no choice, we got to do something here. But we can't go to the kid because you're not giving a rookie quarterback his baptism on a Monday night in the home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. But you, I'm sorry, that's not the place.
C
But guess what? On like what happened the last time a Monday night game where the starting, the veteran starting quarterback tears his Achilles.
B
Had starts in his pocket.
C
But, but I'm saying is you don't want Dart to start on Monday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs. But if Russell Wilson tears his Achilles on the first play, then guess what? Jackson Dart is your starting quarterback. He's got to play the rest. Like I don't get the reps and I get playing with the, you know, working with the ones. You can jimmy switch it any way you want to. But if you don't want him to play and you have him the backup at an NFL game, you are, I keep saying it one play away from having him play in an NFL game. So what that tells me is this regime probably feels like Jackson Dart's our savior. So be prepared at some point, way sooner than it probably should be, that Jackson Dart's going to trot out there. And if they get smacked around by the Dallas Cowboys, it's not going to be Jameis Winston. And that's going to play against Kansas City. It's in all likelihood going to be Jackson Dart.
B
I hate it.
C
Or if not, then it'll be against the Chargers in week four or maybe it'll be the Saints week five. But at some point, to save his job, he's going to say, go out there, kid, and save my job. And I'm definitely afraid that that's going to be the case because he won't save his job. Even if he plays well, he's probably not going to be enough to save his job. And now you could do damage to the kid, because this offensive line is a mess, this team is a mess. And I don't want his first taste of football to be that kind of complete and utter failure. I think this kid's got a decent future and if Dable and Shane don't have a future, I don't want them dragging the quarterback down with him. That's why when it was on the table, they could have traded back into the first round to get a quarterback or contemplating taking a quarterback somewhere else in the first round. That why they brought this regime back. I still don't know. I didn't understand it. And not give him an extension when you brought him back. So you said, go out there and win games, coach. And now he's going to say, I don't, I can't, I can't win games with this quarterback. I'm now going to have Jackson's jock dart start and I'm fine with them going down with the ship. I don't want them to take the quarterback with him.
B
Remember why they're still here. John Mara explained it. He had the documentary about his father, right? And how his father. There was something that he said that he watched Documentary got emotional because his father said something about patience and how important that was. And once he learned that, he said that inspired me and it told me like, I've been turning it over every two years. We can't do that. I've got to stick with something. So that's what that was. That was his mission statement. He heard his father say something and it inspired him to not make the change.
C
All right, so, so that's why he.
B
Did what he did. It didn't sound like there was a plan to it. It sounded like it was an emotional decision.
C
All right, well then that's the problem with John is he thinks too much with his heart instead of his head because all that consistency didn't happen with McAdoo. Didn't happen all the way through Judge. Then finally he finds religion with Dable and gives him a fourth year.
B
Well, Dable was coach of the year.
C
Those other guys, well, that was two years ago and he won nine games.
B
Other guys didn't have success like.
C
But the point is, is that an embarrassment for two years after that, but. But still didn't believe in the consistency enough to give him a contract extension. So go, go coaching GM for your jobs, guys. So. So basically I'm on my fourth wife. My, my wife is cheating, but I don't want to get a divorce the fourth time, so I'm gonna Sit here and be with this piece of human filth. But I'm wait. Because I saw a documentary about my dad's life and I said, you know what? I'm gonna stay married to this piece of filth a fourth time because I can't imagine getting married a fifth time.
B
That's not. That's not a good analogy.
C
It's a great analog. No, no, it's the analogy.
B
No, it's not.
C
The previous coach gifting gold Coach of.
B
The Year, he could have coached, what, a playoff game? At least he could say that.
C
I am not defending it.
B
I'm telling you, this is the only thing he could say is that at least this guy better than what we had before. And maybe I got to give it another.
C
Interesting. Doesn't make it the right decision. Didn't help Schirmer. Didn't. Didn't help McAdoo, who won 11 games.
B
But it's not a cheating. It's a guy who actually won.
C
I tried to clean it up.
E
It wasn't. Neither was particularly clean. No, he did a different version. Neither was great.
C
But if you had to rate what.
E
Was worse, we always said once we get on am, things are all crazy.
B
I don't feel like that was a good analogy. It was not a good analogy, but.
C
I think it's a great analogy because what you're doing is you're not sticking with Stable and Shane because you think they're doing a good job. You're doing it because of the embarrassment of the previous three. Yes, Right. But you said, oh, well, he was coach of the year, won nine games. All right, well, Matt won 11 games and still lost his job after the.
B
One thing he could fall back on.
C
Let's just say. Can we just.
B
Can we just.
C
Just talk honest?
B
I am talking honest.
C
I know his last name is Mara, but he's not his dad. And I'm not sure his dad was even his dad in the sense of his dad had George. Yo. We make the Maras out to be the gold standard of NFL ownership.
E
Guess what?
C
They're not. Right now, the Giants are a dumpster fire, and John Marra is a major reason why. Okay? God love him. I think he's a great human being. And bless the Mara family. But you know what? Wellington didn't know what the heck he was doing. They were flying planes over and burning tickets, and then the league said, here, take Jordan. And then all of a sudden, he's a genius. Well, nobody's been able to save John from these hires. Nobody's been able to Stop him. All right, Again, God lie. I think he's a really nice guy, but we got to stop it is what it is, right? They are an absolute moronic franchise right now. Who's to blame for that? Who's been in charge of this? Because he thinks with his heart, because he's a fan. He's the guy that's kicking the garbage cans. He's the guy that's got blood in the ground with his team. That's great. But unfortunately, he should use that. That Ivy League head of his and try to figure out how to fix it instead of having him watching documentaries. And that's the why you make a decision. All right? Wellington's not here anymore. John, it's up to you. God love him, but he's gone. We miss him, but you can't have the emotion of watching a documentary on your dad make it. This a bad decision.
E
And by the way, you know, respectfully, John is getting up there. It's time to start turning this thing around again. What's your guess on John's age? 70.
C
I think he's 60, 67, 68 years old.
E
I'm not saying he's ancient, but these years go quick. You got to turn this thing around. This has quickly become. It went like, oh, The Giants, every four years, win 70. Well, if you take the time that it's been since 2011 and move that forward, we can't do that. That's 14 years. It'll be 84 years old. You gotta, at some point, start not worrying about whatever things were and worry about what things are right now. And it took me a while to realize it, too. I always took the Giants. I just. I treated the organization with the highest level of respect because they always seem to do the right thing. They have not done that for the last.
B
They've not been the same since they.
E
Since Coughlin.
B
Since they sent Tom Coughlin out of the building and the standard changed and it's never been the same since.
E
Nope.
B
That's a real.
C
He walked right after. The press wouldn't shake his hand, right past John.
B
That was a seminal moment in franchise history.
C
And again, good person, good man, good Giant fan. Doesn't make you a good owner.
E
It just doesn't.
C
And it's a problem. But nobody really want. Because he's such a good guy and he's an institution. Nobody wants to pick on him. But really, look at what's happened since Alan said Coughlin has left. And look at the one coach after the other, each decision after the other.
E
Bad, bad bad, bad, bad.
C
Yes, they stumbled into a playoff. Bertha won a playoff game in 2022. But anybody that watched the games the way I did knew that they were smoking mirrors, man. And it's been a long time since 2022 and that playoff win. This could be a third consecutive year of just absolute papa. Fans deserve better. 1-800-919-3776 tons of phone calls to get to. That was a nice tribute last night at the Video Music Young Blood with.
B
With Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Joe Perry. I I younger now. He's. He actually I think knew Ozzy. I think like they, they had a connection.
C
He's English, right?
B
Yes. And you know, you could see he, he has obviously the young, powerful voice. Did you notice how Tyler was trying to stay with him?
C
Yeah, it's tough.
B
Like that was almost a competition. Well, you remember mama, I'm going. I'm coming home.
C
Steven Tyler, like they Aerosmith had to cancel the tour because he lost his voice and he's over 70. But I'm glad.
B
Did you hear the crazy train? Yeah, that young bull did.
C
Well, you sent me. I never turned it on, but I'm.
B
Saying like, all right, so you did a great job.
C
No, he did a good job.
B
That was really good.
E
All right, look, Don didn't hate it.
B
Didn't hate it.
C
I was hate.
B
I wasn't sure if he would go for it or not, but it wasn't bad. Mariah Carey, good to see her.
E
I just. The award show is so weird because it's still completely geared towards kids.
B
It felt like 50 year olds and 20 year olds.
E
Right.
B
But nothing in between.
E
So like LL Cool J's hosting. Yeah, they're honoring Mariah Carey at the beginning. So clear. Busta. They so clearly were forcing everyone to clap as they were setting up to announce the tribute for Ozzy. Yeah, they're like, and we honor the Prince of Dark. I can't even get the word darkness out of their mouth before everyone's screaming like, these people don't know. They don't nickname. They don't know what that is.
B
It's a crowd full of girls 17 the arena.
C
Listen, I, I really appreciate the effort. Yeah, but you're not playing to the room. No, you're doing it because you feel obligated to do. But there wasn't a song and I wouldn't expect them to know. I wouldn't expect. That's why you needed young girls to know who they might have heard Ozzy Osbourne, but they don't know the songs.
B
So at the Grammys then don't. Who, who's it got to be?
C
Who, who should you know?
B
There's going to be some tribute to Ozzy obviously at the Grammys, right?
C
Yeah, so.
B
So what? Who would you prefer it be?
C
I didn't have a problem with Youngblood.
B
Thought he was great.
C
I, I, I, I mean there's so many guys. But if you could pick.
B
He's not a known commodity though, you know what I mean? He's, he's still very young. It's not, it's still niche. There's not a lot of rockers left. He's like somebody that's keeping it alive for a young artists, but.
E
Yeah, but you could go with someone who's 50 and they're still way younger than us.
B
Yeah, well that's why I said if you had your choice of someone you thought could pull it off, who should it be?
C
Well, I think Rob Halford could pull it off. He's got a tremendous voice, you know, lead singer, Judas Priest, but it's a contemporary. He's also. Yeah, I don't know how relevant Judas Priest is to a young, you know, Grammy audience.
B
Well, you don't need to worry about the audience. You worry about doing it right.
C
But just, you know, somebody that knew him and somebody that I think is still relevant like you. That's the combination. You want to try to find like that somebody that will honor it the right way but, but also be relevant to the audience. I don't know if there's any like Grammys is skew a lot older than I think at the MTV Music Awards, naturally.
B
That's why I'm asking.
C
But not that, but not that much. You're still gonna have like a bunch of 30 somethings that you know, probably aren't going to relate to you.
B
You obviously was a fan. Black Sabbath.
C
Right.
B
So if you, if there was somebody that you felt that would move you.
C
Oh, it moved me.
B
Like you're in charge of this.
C
What would give you movement? Rob Halford would for sure. Like I said, Steven Tyler wasn't bad.
B
Not terrible.
C
Not terrible. But since it's, that's already been done. It's such a good question because Sabrina Carpenter.
E
Yeah, I think that was.
B
By the way, she had a fantastic performance.
E
Oh, she's a sick person.
B
Sounded like a Janet Jackson song. It was really good.
E
She actually.
B
No, that was dojo.
E
That's doja.
B
That's.
E
She's a great performer, too. I like that.
B
Very good.
E
But Sabrina's a hell of a performer, too.
B
Did not expect the rain, but it happened.
E
Yeah.
B
How do they do that in arena?
C
What's that?
B
It just starts pouring rain from the ceiling and the stage now is going to be soaked with like. How do they do that?
C
Well, where does the water go?
E
I don't know when.
C
We don't know when. When the metal lands. Leaked during the final four. 96. Nobody thought it was a cool thing.
E
Yeah, not the same.
B
I was covering games at Nassau Coliseum. We pulled that. It was umbrella night and we had to use the umbrella because it started that route. That roof was leaking so bad.
C
That's weird. Like, it was umbrella night and then the roof leaks on umbrella.
B
Incredible.
E
That is special.
C
Something was going.
E
And by the way, no one gave credit to the commanders when they had sewage leak.
B
That was. Yeah, that was real sewage.
C
Good idea. There'll be Sewage leaking in MetLife Stadium when the Giants return home against Kansas City. 02 still looking for their first touchdown. Let's go to Danny on Long Island. You're on ESPN New York. Hi, Danny.
G
Good afternoon, men. As the. As the show historian, I can tell you that there were two words used about 10 minutes ago that will not be on Drop Madness.
C
And yeah, unfortunately, it really is unfortunate.
G
And we used to have a guy on the show who used to appear and he now appears on the 1 to 3 show. His name was Steve Young and he used to say that the first three weeks of the season were like a preseason. I remember I used to think that was insane because they all count in the standings. But basically you saw some teams that traditionally play good defense that didn't have any. So I would warn anyone from saying, like the jets beat a good defense yesterday. Well, we don't really know if the Steelers 2025 version is going to be a good defense. They got blown off the line both sides of the ball. So we don't. We're going to. We're going to make statements based on what we think we've seen in the past, but doesn't really like. The Ravens have always had a good defense. They played them twice a year. I know Ray Lewis is long gone, but they're well schooled, they're well oiled. They just replace parts with a matching part and they're going to have a good defense. What happened yesterday, these guys don't even practice and then they're at full speed. It's hard to, it's hard to get anything. That's why we call it overreaction Monday. Right. It's just everybody's either 0 and 1. I mean Detroit looked pitiful. The commanders didn't look good. The Chiefs lost the Steelers, okay, they scored a lot of points. But you know, you know when you say about like Wilson, just remember my guy Mike Tomlin, he looked at at field last year and said no, you know what, Wilson's my guy. So then he caught Wilson for Rogers basically couldn't. He could, I mean he could. He cut field, he could have reached signed field. They went in the run. So now when I'm looking at that game list and I'm saying yeah, we're going to lose, we're going to win some games this year with Rogers, but for a long term composition, did they make the right move? Because it feels looks really good. He can move and you have to be able to move in this version of the NFL you can't be a statue. And Rogers throws well on the move when he's rolling out and he seems to feel well and 90% of the game is played from the head up in football. But when he's in the pocket, he's a statue. And then I'm watching Jackson last night where he's 25 yards behind the line of scrimmage. It looks like youth peewee football and he turns it into like a 25 yard run. I think they said he ran a total like 67 yards on the play. You have to be able to move around, you have to be able to run. And lastly, I got a kick out of talking about the field goals because the NFL is going to, is going to, you know, the way they left to change rules because they don't want this to be a field goal league. You know, Roy Jarello won three Super Bowls with the Steelers. He pitched, he kicked for 10 years. He made one field goal over 50 yards in his entire career and over 40 yards he was at 30%. Chris Boswell is at 93% overall and is hitting things from 60 that could have been from 70. Are they going to go to college? Hash marks which are further out makes the, makes it a much difficult. More so because I can't imagine that the NFL and think about it, when you get the kickoff, you get it at the 35 yard line, you nearly.
C
You need to go.
B
I disagree.
G
25 yards.
B
Here's why I disagree. Here's why I disagree. No league ever wants to squelch scoring. No league.
G
Didn't they change the ball, didn't they change the ball at one point to make it harder? Did they still do that?
C
Yeah. And then I just don't think what's.
E
What would be the, I guess what's the downside of people making scoring.
C
But I, but I feel goals are. Here's the downside. Yeah, they're cool the down, like they're not upset about it. But what you do like to see is not settling for these long field goals. You would like to see touchdowns. You would like to see teams going forward on fourth down. If I know all I have to do is cross the 50 yard line, I could kick a field goal. It's too punitive for the defense. Like you said, you get the ball at the 35 yard line, right? Well, did I rip? Did my defense fail? If I, If I allow 20 yards, if I allow one first down, that means I got to give up points.
B
Here's the thing you got to think about, though. It's still a low percentage kick, even though the percentage is higher now than ever before. If you miss that kick, look where you're giving the other team the ball. I know it's still not a smart move if you have a kicker with a big leg and you need the points. That's where it changes. Now instead of having to go for a fourth down, if I'm down three or two or one, I can kick that and feel like I have a shot later in the game. You're not doing that in the first quarter.
C
I get it.
B
60 yarder in the first quarter.
C
Danny brought up the K ball. Yeah, they went to the K ball because they felt like teams are relying too much on the field goal because these guys are getting too good and we want people to go for touchdowns instead of field goals. All right, well, now they're kicking 60 yard field goals like so you, you might, they might feel like we've got to try to do something. Yes, it's more scoring and it could be fun to see a guy break a record, but you also don't want to see like that, especially when you're getting into overtime now.
B
So much more involved. This wind, you know that these, these are not.
C
If it's snowing in Buffalo or if it was snowing in my life stadium. I don't but still, let's not make rules. It is pretty incredible.
E
Well, did you guys squelch?
B
Did you guys see. At the end of the game last night, you see the video where Hopkins and Lamar Jackson are going off the field?
E
Oh, of course.
B
And a Buffalo fan tap hits Hopkins on the head.
E
Yeah.
B
And then Lamar tries to tap Lamar. Jack. Lamar Jackson shoves the dude, like, three rows back. So, like, that's becoming. There's an interesting, like, conversation happening. Of course, Buffalo is saying he's assaulted a fan, and Lamar is saying, I got to be better. I got to just ignore.
E
Team didn't say that the team suspended the fan.
B
Yeah. Yeah. Oh, no. And it's the right thing to do because he's the one that. That initiated the content.
E
When I first saw the video, I didn't understand what's happening because, like, I thought he was, like, being a fan.
B
Then I topped the helmet pretty hard.
E
He did. Then I'm like, oh, it's a Bills fan slapping a Ravens player in the helmet.
B
Yeah.
C
It's kind of like the analogy of, well, if you don't want to get mugged, don't go down the dark alley.
E
Right.
B
Okay. But they're going to their.
C
The guy that in the dark alley still should get arrested. But it's still a good idea not to go down the dark alley. Don't. Don't go near the fans.
B
No, no. They were walking to the tunnel.
E
They shouldn't have to avoid getting near the fans.
C
But it might be a good idea to just not listen. They have to think about that stuff right now. You have to think about it. But that these fans, they're all brazen. They all think that it's. It's crazy. If we had ENN today, I'm sure we were talking about the. The woman in Philadelphia that took the ball away from the father who gave it to the kid.
B
How about that?
C
People are just.
B
Oh, my God.
C
People are just ridiculous.
E
People are animals. I mean, let's be honestly. You slapped DeAndre Hopkins in the head. What are you doing?
C
Well, you're a little.
B
You're a little jacked up. Your team just won.
C
But the thing is, what makes you think in a world that's a good.
E
Idea, there's no world of drunkenness or happiness in which I would understand touching a person, professional athlete, putting your hands.
C
This is how emboldened they are. That's why you got to throw the book at these people, because this is how emboldened you feel like, I can do that.
E
Just like, I don't understand stealing the baseball from a dad who just gave it to.
C
There's a part of me, as much as I'm like so psyched to see Marco become a sports fan, the positive byproduct of him just not being into music or not being into sports is for where I think it's going. Like going to games now, it just feels like. It feels dangerous. And you just wonder where is it going to end? Above people with the fans running on the field, trying to get involved. Like even going back to the World Series, just thinking it's okay to grab a ball out of a. I was never afraid to do that.
B
There's a weird entitlement happening. There is a great word that we haven't seen. And I remember videos from the 70s of some of the similar type of action. I mean, people were jumping on the field and there was a lot of acting up happening back then. But to this degree, now is different. And I just think it's not dangerous. Don. I wouldn't say. I'm saying that there's an obnoxious level to where I do think about that. Going to a game and sitting in the crowd. It's almost like you have to accept that someone's gonna be obnoxious and there's nothing you can do or someone's gonna.
E
Be cursing and inappropriate.
B
Well, that's obnoxious.
E
I'll say this. When I was in Paris a couple, a couple of weeks ago and I brought Maya out into the bowl at the WWE show, I at her age, only seven and a half months, I would only do that at WWE right now. I'm not a football game. No, I am not bringing a seven month old near a football stadium. Near. Honestly, an arena. Competitive.
B
Maybe a baseball game.
E
Maybe I'd have a daytime baseball game. But like, I hear you, like, there's a certain thing with, with sports even there.
B
Imagine a magic ball comes your way.
E
I know someone's running bowling into me because a ball, stupid.
B
You're like, just say, oh, maybe I'll catch it. I told you. I almost caught one at Citi Field and this guy just decided I'm. It's about to go right to me. I have Emma and Zach. They're both like, you know, seven and eight years old and I'm about to catch it. And a guy behind me thinks it's a good idea to put his beer.
E
Oh yeah.
B
In front of me. And now the beer gets knocked out of his hand and my kids get covered in beer because he just thought it was a good idea to do that instead of let me just catch the damn ball. It's, it's, now I've got two little kids. Am I supposed to turn around and just start beating the hell out of this guy, which I really wanted to do? No. Cause I got two kids.
E
You got to go wash off your kids and try to find a way to still enjoy the game.
B
Now I got to figure out how to explain to them like, this guy's just a moron. That's all. You know, adults are morons. It happens. But it's, that's, that's reality.
C
More your calls. 1-800-919-3776, taking up until 6:00'.

B
You know, everybody always talks about like the the Four Horsemen stuff and the show crossovers. This is like the Opportunity to see all the shows kind of together. You don't get that?
C
No.
B
And so you know the banter is going to be off the charts.
C
Morning show and afternoon drive very rarely mix because just the hours tell you it's tough. Well, Peter's been waiting for it all day.
B
Oh, boy.
C
And that is Tessa in West Caldwell. You're on ESPN New York. Hi, Tessa.
D
Hey, guys. Thanks so much for taking my call.
G
I appreciate it.
D
Yeah, Pete, I'm glad you have been waiting for all day, but I'm. I drink a couple sips of tea.
G
So I can stay calm just to get my points across. I know we don't have too much.
D
Time, but listen, Pete, good job.
G
Good job with your team. I said.
D
I said the other day when you crashed out that you have a good team. But I'm never going to crown your team because this is my point about your team.
G
And then I'm going to trash my own team.
D
You guys are supposed to be the new Cinderella team. So you guys are supposed to put your cleats on our throat and smash our windpipes.
G
But you didn't do that.
D
All you kept doing was get leaving the door open. But because our O line is trash and a bunch of big baybacks robots. That's why, you know, you guys were able to pull the win out. So I just want to say good job. And do you have a good team? Absolutely. But I can hear it in your voice. Your voice is all smug. All day. High pitched, excited. Calm down.
E
High pitched and excited.
D
Now you're keeping me calm.
E
Guys, hold on. Don Allen.
B
All day you actually have behaved yourself. I thought you'd be. I thought you might be unsufferable.
E
My team beat the local team here. I've barely talked about it. Yeah, Tessa, you. You cannot. You do everything in your power to find a reason to talk trash. Even when you lose. Even when I don't do anything.
D
What did you say on Thursday? The good, the bad, the ugly. I'm always gonna have something to say. You damn right. But now let me talk real trash about my team. And I know Don can relate. Listen, Don, why can't they just do their job? I mean, I don't know if you guys will. You guys have. You guys have kids. So you guys know who Baymax is? The big. The big robot. You know what I'm talking about?
B
That's what we got.
D
A bunch of freaking marshmallows that can't move. They all look like they belong on Jay Z. Besides Andrew Thomas, what is going on why are we this terrible? You got Russell Wilson running around like a bunch of wild dogs is chasing him. You got them running backs running into big backs and butt cheeks all day because they can't make a hole. They can't do nothing. What is going on? Why can't somebody just do their job, draft correctly or just train these guys up? I don't know. I don't know. I just. I don't know. The play calling is trash. The play calling is trash. I can't take the play calling offensively. What is Mike Casker doing? What is he doing? He didn't do nothing that he was.
G
Doing in preseason.
E
When Tessa was talking about the defense and all the things that were going to happen and how bad it was going to be for Jaden Daniels. And then here we are on the Monday after the first game when they played, and all she's able to do is rip how bad the team is. Man, that did not go how you thought.
C
Defense wasn't bad. It wasn't great, but it did.
E
But we got out of the game alive, didn't we? We survived the game.
C
I keep circling everything that Tessa said.
E
Didn'T sound like how she thought it.
C
Was going to sound when you're poorly coached. This is what football looks like, all right? This is not basketball where talent's going to shine through and LeBron James or Kawhi Leonard or whoever you want to bring out. It's going to just take control of the game or, you know, any other sport. Football is all about the scheme and the coaching and the play calling and the execution. Yes, I get the players do control it. But when it looks bad all the time and nothing seems to function, to me, it comes to preparedness, which is on the coach. Comes to play calling, which is on the coach scheme, on the coach. You know, I was looking. I was taking the deep dive. Like people that I respect like looking at plays. Just like Kurt Warner on said, I can't blame Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson didn't look good, but what is he supposed to do when nobody's open? He doesn't have time. And I'm tired of hearing, well, the offensive line is trash. Well, how come the jets were able to score 32 points? They lost their best guard, Their offensive line's not great. Every year, oh, we got a chance to beat so and so because their center's out or their tackles out and still can't get to the quarterback because you're not scheming properly. You're not. That's what football is. It's a chess match. And I think every week, Peter, they get exposed, they get out.
E
Coached. Yeah, I mean, it's, it's not a great situation. This team, this, this head coach has really, since, since year one, when, as you pointed out earlier, we were already, you and I were already not particularly impressed. Since then, it has not really been a thing. This, this team has not been well coached. They have offensively been a disaster. And that's just the crazy part is you think you're getting this guy who supposedly was the magic ingredient with Josh Allen. We have not seen any of that.
C
You know, Josh Allen looks the same as before. And after scoring a ton of points in a league where they just hand.
E
And guess what? Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito, Russell Wilson, they all look the same too.
C
And every once in a while something comes together. Like when they beat the colts last year. DeVito beat Green Bay. Catch a team, right? That's why I'm willing to be calm, because it is just one game. I don't know what Washington's going to be. For all I know, Washington might have an undefeated season and be the best team in football. And we'll look back and go, well, of course they didn't score. Nobody scored against Washington this year. Same thing with the Jets. Maybe, maybe this the year. Pittsburgh's defense isn't very good and everybody's, everybody's gashing them for, for 200 yards on the ground and they're giving up 30 points a game and we'll look different. Remember last year when the jets lost to San Francisco was like, oh, well, it's San Francisco. Well, San Francisco ended up under.500. It ended up not being all that. So the loss looked even worse. So we're gonna have to wait and see. But it just, the irritating thing, it just looked the same as it always looked, not being able to score in the red zone. They got some breaks just to be able to get into the red zone. You got eight plays, 13 plays in the red zone. Six points. Come on, come on. Matt in Manhattan. You're on espn.
E
New York.
G
Hey, guys, how you doing?
C
Good.
G
A couple points. Good to hear from you guys. Alan, they're trying 60 yard out field goals on a regular basis.
C
These teams we saw in the first quarter.
G
Second quarter, yeah, any quarter, right out, boom. 60. Good. 63. They're trying them out on a regular basis. So, yeah, it's getting a little crazy.
C
And I'm glad you brought up that point, Matt, because the, the thing that they have is, well, if I miss this 60 yard field goal. I'm giving them the ball at the 50 yard line, but they don't care because you know what you get. They're going to get there. Just stop them from scoring touchdowns. That's what the defense is saying. But you know, late in the game, you know, it started at the championship game a couple of years ago where, you know, Mahomes was able to get the field goal range in 13 seconds because these guys just kick bombs.
E
All right? And between how high powered the passing game is and how long you kick a field goal from three points can happen in five seconds.
G
Exactly. And then to another point, the Giants, you know, I called a couple weeks ago, everyone was high on the, you know, they were scoring all these points in the preseason. There was a lot of optimism and I called and I said nothing's changed. It's the same regime, you know, nothing really changed. They got a few decent players, but the organization hasn't changed. And sure enough, they came out and they were uncompetitive again.
C
They just do not.
G
I know you're, you don't want to blow your lid. I know it's only one game, but in reality it's two years in one game now. Same.
C
Well, that's, that's why you can't ignore it, Matt. You can't ignore it. But let's see what it looks against Dallas. Dallas doesn't have that great of a defense. But, but come on, it just feels like the same old Giants. Well, I just wanted to take this second. We got a minute to go. Over the weekend, we lost Davey Johnson, manager of the Mets, 86 team and 82, you know, a life well led. Hell, heck of a player, Peter on the Braves, on the Auras. He actually made the last out of the 69 World Series for Baltimore when the Mets won. And then he came here and he changed the culture of the team. In 84 and 85 they came close and then won the World Series. So we've already lost Gary Carter from the 86 Mets and Buddy Harrelson and now Davey Johnson. Well, you know, it's been 39 years, long time ago. It's hard to believe because you were too young to remember 86, but like.
E
David was in his 40s. That's one of my first sports memories, is 86. I remember pretty well. Had this not been a football Monday, and we know what sports people are like when it comes to a first week football Monday, Davey Johnson's passing would have gotten a lot more time. Yeah, and a true baseball stalwart in this town.
C
And the Yankees and the Mets would have gotten more love too for their weekends. But we're love. Not great love for the Mets losing two out of three. But we'll get to the baseball of it all tomorrow. Mets baseball coming up next here on ESPN New York.

Hour 3: Giants QB Plan
ESPN New York | September 8, 2025
This episode dives deep into the New York Giants’ turbulent quarterback situation in the wake of a dismal season opener. Don La Greca, Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg debate the present and future of Russell Wilson as the starter, the role and readiness of rookie Jackson Dart, and possible shakeups including the potential for Jameis Winston to step in. The conversation expands to ownership decisions, coaching regime scrutiny, shifting norms in NFL offenses, and wider New York sports culture—complete with the hosts’ trademark passion, candor, and colorful analogies.
Alan Hahn (Giants regime):
“That’s the problem with John is he thinks too much with his heart instead of his head because all that consistency didn’t happen with McAdoo. Didn’t happen all the way through Judge. Then finally he finds religion with Dable and gives him a fourth year.” (16:28)
Peter Rosenberg (On Russell Wilson):
“Russell Wilson... even if they protect him a bit more, just the way the ball looks coming out of his hand now, he is not the guy he was. There’s no, there’s no version where he’s turning back into old Russell Wilson.” (09:00)
Alan (regarding the QB controversy):
“All I’m asking is if the long term plan... was that Dart wouldn’t play for a while, but yet this regime decided to make him the backup quarterback. Why?” (11:20)
Darius Slayton (on starting a rookie):
“The reality is, things take time... Not everything is just a 911 situation...” (05:13)
Tessa (Caller):
“You got Russell Wilson running around like a bunch of wild dogs is chasing him. You got them running backs running into big backs and butt cheeks all day because they can’t make a hole.” (44:59)
For listeners pressed for time:
This hour is a real-time snapshot of New York football disillusionment—blunt, funny, and sharply critical, with no punches pulled. The focus is unrelenting on the Giants’ faltering QB strategy, a regime viewed as directionless, and a city’s longing for leadership with the courage to build, not just react.
