Peter Rosenberg
That sounds like heaven to me.
Don Legreca
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3.
Alan Hahn
On 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers. All right, into the big five o'clock hour we go with Don Legrecka and Peter Rosenberg. I'm Alan Hahn. 800-919-3776. We got calls to get to. We got lots of news to get to. And Don has a take to get to now.
Don Legreca
Oh, you teased it big. You said you're going up and in on Judge Bird.
Peter Rosenberg
Even though everything the Yankees have done tells you the mission statement is no longer championship. What does Judge always say? We didn't win the championship. That's all that matters. Like, he's still outwardly talking about the mission statement that just actions speak louder than words. But Judge still carries the water for it. And the same goes here, where if you don't want to play here because of a beard, you don't want to play here. I think Judge is playing that role of the other guy because he knows the fans respond to that because he's the captain. He's doing what he has to do, I think to kind of just play well, how else are you gonna play? Are you gonna fall in line or are you gonna push back and go, hey, those guys don't wanna play here? I was the one that took the discount. I'll just stay here. I was okay with the policy. But like the caller said, he doesn't wear a beard, but I think he sometimes will because he's the captain, kind of take the reins for the other people to say, I wanna have that standard, like what Alan's saying, because I think the fans rally around that. But you don't think they ran this when they made the decision in the first place. Come on, he's under contract for the next decade. They run the trades and free agent signings by him. I'm sure they ran this by him. If Judge said to Hal Steinbrenner in the same tone that he Said it to the press the other day. Do you think Hal would have done it?
Alan Hahn
Can I read for you? Go ahead. What he said. Judge said, if that little rule is going to stop you from coming here, then you probably shouldn't be here. If a little rule like that's going to stop you from doing your job, then I don't think. I don't know. So I haven't heard too much about guys. It's stopping them from coming here. But Hal dug in a little bit more than I did on that. Then he said this. We definitely talked about that, because that was one of my big things, rules. It's all about discipline, especially playing with the Yankees. This is a disciplined group. That's the one thing I learned all the way from the minor leagues up. You have those certain rules that teach you discipline, teach you a certain way. That was my big concern. I didn't want a lot of these rules to start changing.
Peter Rosenberg
All right?
Alan Hahn
That is why I brought it up. That's why I feel like even Don Mattingly said, times change. It's okay. Like, we all understand that in a vacuum, yes, you can see it from a time change. But when you start to see that, then you ask yourself, well, what else are we gonna change around here? And Judge express enough of a concern. He said, quote, all of these separate, separate us and make the New York Yankees the standard. We talked about a lot of those things. I just wanted to reiterate with him. I understand the facial policy, but let's keep a lot of these other things in check.
Peter Rosenberg
And I think that's the only thing that's gonna change. They're gonna put names on the backs of the jerseys. They're not gonna do that. They're not gonna all of a sudden have a, you know, a neon pinstripe jersey as their alternate jurors. Not doing that. So I think. I think that caller before says, we're probably going a little too far with that, but just maybe we're missing the angle of, if he was that animate in the meetings about it, then why did the Yankees do it? You're still going against your captain. One of the partners, a guy that you invested a lot of money in, he seems pretty adamant on the side of not doing it. They did it anyway. Was it that important? Why was it so important?
Alan Hahn
Must have been.
Peter Rosenberg
Or was it that that judge kind of playing the other side publicly, but didn't really have that kind of venom in the meeting? Because I just can't imagine that Hal and Brian Cashman, all the Powers that be with the Yankees would defy what their captain wanted.
Don Legreca
That is. I was thinking the same thing. I'm like, I wonder how he actually expressed it, because he sounds there like he wasn't into it, like he's not thrilled about it. So do they go to him and say, hey, here's what we're doing? And he was like, really? And they're like, we got to do something. And he's like, all right, I'm not.
Alan Hahn
Into it, as long as it's just that let's not start. Like, he also reiterates at the end, all right, if we're doing that, fine, but let's not start tearing down all the standards that. By the way, by the way, by.
Don Legreca
The way, it kind of does go with Judge's personality. I'm not talking politics here, but I'm saying as a guy, he's a pretty conservative guy. So it's not. This isn't shocking that he would fall. He doesn't do anything expressive with how he dresses on the field. His look like he's not gonna show up next week with a beard, you know, that it's not his style. So I'm not surprised that this fit in the wheelhouse of things that he wasn't. That's not a shock to me.
Alan Hahn
Okay, well, the Yankees had a spring training game today. It was canceled due to weather, so there wasn't a game. However, as always, there's news, and the news of Giancarlo Stanton and his elbow issues, you know, continues to be in the headlines for the Yankees. The original report from the Post was he was going back to New York to get some testing on these elbows. But Aaron Boone. This is from Brian Hoch. Aaron Boone said he is in New York, meaning Stanton, of course, but the situation is, quote, personal in nature, and I'm going to leave it at that for now. That's all I can comment on that. So coming back to New York, I guess, is not about the elbows, but a personal situation. But still, you know, injuries for the Yankees, that. That's with Stan, of course, is a concern. Injuries for the Mets guys, who was 7 4. What was the score today? Do you remember?
Peter Rosenberg
7 4, 7 4, right.
Alan Hahn
They lost to the Cardinals in a spring training game, but. So we already knew about Frankie Montos being out, but now there's Sean Mania and an oblique injury that's going to keep him out for a couple of weeks, plural. And Mania did explain what the injury was a couple weeks ago. Pretty much at the very beginning of camp.
Caller
It Kind of nothing really got any better.
Alan Hahn
Didn't really get worse, it just kind of plateaued. And yeah, I think the worst part is that it just never got any better over the last couple weeks.
Caller
So I've been throwing, been pitching and recovery hasn't really been the greatest in between. And so that was kind of why we said something.
Alan Hahn
And when he first felt this kind of right when I got here, nothing grabbed or anything like that. I was sore and I was like, okay, that's interesting.
Caller
And then just never really got any better from there.
Peter Rosenberg
Have you dealt with these before? Is this something or is this a new thing?
Alan Hahn
Very new thing for me.
Caller
I've never had anything like this before.
Alan Hahn
Blows your mind, doesn't it? That's two starters now in a rotation that was supposed to be six.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, that's why I was a little concerned about it. Just because it looks like he's not going to be ready for opening day. We know Montas won't be ready until probably, you know, May at the earliest. So now you got to go out and find a pitcher. Now I think Quintana is somebody that they're definitely going to sign. He's still out there and he wants to come back. Last year wants to come back. So I think that's inevitable. Listening to Howie during the broadcast today, he didn't seem like he was overly concerned about it. Remember, it's a long year, guys. This team was dead in the water in June last year and came within two wins of going to the World Series. So if they've got to start the year, you know, mixing and matching the rotation. I know they want to do a six man rotation for Senga, but maybe they're going to have to back off that early if they don't find a replacement. I'm a little concerned about it because you are trying to convert a closer into a starting pitcher. So if that doesn't work, you'd be down him. So that's putting a lot of pressure on guys like McGill to now be a part of the starting rotation. I'm not overly concerned about it, but it is, it's something to look at. And I think they do have to go out and get themselves another pitcher. What if Homes doesn't work out, Alan?
Don Legreca
How is that even possible?
Alan Hahn
But still though, that is definitely part of the concern going into this season. It's that you went six man rotation. Manaya looks like your ace. He certainly pitched like one last year, but. And then you have Senga, who you're hoping can also be an Ace So that feels good at the top you got a one and two that you feel good about based off past. But now and then Montas as a three isn't so bad. But you that was a wild card. Now you don't have him. Now you don't have Mania. Senga, you know, is somebody you were trying to keep on in a six man rotation for a reason to give him a little extra day rest. And then Clay Holmes is a not, not a gamble but an experiment. So you're really starting the season compromised with your starting pitching which as we.
Peter Rosenberg
Know it's compromised is alarming. Yeah. But they do have I think the wiggle room to add because it's weird with all these injuries. It's like oh, bad the Mets have these injuries but also now you know why Stearns doesn't want to invest big money in long term contracts on these pitchers because they always get hurt. So you're probably always erring on the side of having seven, eight guys in the spring because somebody's going to go down, somebody's going to go on the il, somebody's going to be ineffective, somebody's going to get demoted to the bullpen and you're still going to have to have five, maybe six guys to go out there and start for you. So get it out of the way. Find out what you have now rather than this happening in the middle of a pennant race and you can't recover from it. But with two guys on opening day when you're arguably your two best starters, two of the three because the ace that you're going to have to go out and get Quintana. I would think they're probably going to do that at some point.
Alan Hahn
I'm sure they're in touch and that's a direction we'll see when they do go there. But it is early in spo. But it's amazing how these kind of things can creep up early on and make you worry.
Don Legreca
This is why. This is why. This is why I hate pitchers and catchers. People get excited for like the start of spring training. It's only bad news.
Alan Hahn
Why do you show up and already hurt like that? It blows my mind how you get.
Don Legreca
Fired on your day off.
Alan Hahn
What have you been doing?
Don Legreca
I know. Well, I never liked this time of the year. You never get good news. Oh, good news. We know someone's going to have a great year. That can't happen. The only news that can come from right now is bad news.
Alan Hahn
Well, when you get late in the season and you're Getting a player back, that's also a big value. So let's switch gears to the Knicks and where they are after a hell weekend where they got smoked by Cleveland, they got smoked by Boston, and everybody in the national media is pretty much writing them off as having any chance. Like they basically are declaring, don't include the Knicks when you're talking about contenders because they're now 07 against the three teams that have a better record than them in the NBA. And they're not. Not only they owe seven, they're losing by an average of 20 points a game. So they're nowhere. They're not even on the same surface as those teams. But the Knicks will tell you, well, we're not quite whole yet. And things could change dramatically with the impending return that we've been telling you about for a few weeks now of Mitchell Robinson. Sham Charania on NBA Countdown gave the latest on Mitchell Robinson and when to expect him back in the lineup because he already has been cleared for practice. He has been practicing, but they have not put him in uniform yet.
Commercial Announcer
Mitchell Robinson is closing on his season debut. Sources tell me his goal is to.
Don Legreca
Make his return to the lineup at.
Commercial Announcer
Some point over the next week.
Peter Rosenberg
He did multiple full scrimmages over the last several days and he's going to.
Commercial Announcer
Have another session scheduled for early in the week.
Peter Rosenberg
And then the Knicks.
Commercial Announcer
Robinson will make a determination on when.
Peter Rosenberg
That target date could be.
Commercial Announcer
This is someone that was a starting center for the Knicks last season.
Peter Rosenberg
He's expected to be an anchor for.
Don Legreca
The Knicks defense alongside Karl Anthony Towns.
Commercial Announcer
Potentially finish together for the Knicks.
Alan Hahn
So you heard Stephen A. Yell. Yes. Because any Knick fan right now is looking for any sliver of hope. Couple of things from what I understand. He's. They are trying to get him in game condition, which is hard to do. All you can do is scrimmage and that's the last thing. And when you haven't played as long as he has for a big man like that, you know you're going to be sucking wind in practice. It's just going to be. It's going to be tough to get there. But I'm also looking at the schedule and guess who the Knicks play on Wednesday.
Don Legreca
Who's that?
Alan Hahn
Next game Wednesday, The Sixers.
Don Legreca
Okay.
Alan Hahn
Joel Embiid.
Don Legreca
Oh, yeah.
Alan Hahn
Remember the last time Mitchell Robinson was seen? Joe Embiid grabbed his leg and pulled him down.
Don Legreca
That was the last time he was seen.
Alan Hahn
That was the last time Mitchell Robinson was seen. Yeah.
Don Legreca
Is Embiid currently playing on Wednesday Right.
Alan Hahn
Now The Sixers are kicking around the idea of whether they should shut him down for the rest of the season. Yeah, because his knee is so bad. And I said this morning on get up. No, you should make him play. Why should he get the parachute out of a lost season? Make him play because he didn't want to take the summer off like he should have right now. Oh, but now he's going to get a pass while everybody else has to show up and tank. No, make him play. But if you're Mitchell Robinson, who's the one guy you just want to make sure you see? You want to see Joel Embiid.
Don Legreca
So I'm curious, by the way, we'll see if he plays Wednesday night.
Alan Hahn
Like I said, I'm curious to see if that's the game, because there's three. They played Sunday. They don't. They're off today, Tuesday, then they play Wednesday.
Don Legreca
Respectfully, this is the most overhyped. Like, we're so grasping at straws for something to change this team.
Alan Hahn
Say it.
Don Legreca
It's like, yo, guys, guess what?
Alan Hahn
Yep.
Don Legreca
We're going to the Jackson 5 concert. You're not going to believe it. Tito's available. Well, I can't believe we're going to see Tito at msg.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Don Legreca
But you forget Michael's playing, right? Oh, yeah. Michael's been playing all year, but Tito.
Alan Hahn
Plays bass, and it's a very important part.
Don Legreca
No, no, and listen, don't get me wrong. The concert. Concert's gonna be better because Tito's there.
Peter Rosenberg
Sure.
Don Legreca
But, like, the hype around it, it's not to minimize what Mitchell Robinson brings. But, guys, it's not. Wilt is coming back. Hakeem's not coming back.
Alan Hahn
Is this like, Matt Rempe needs to be in the lineup?
Peter Rosenberg
Don, it's one notch above it. But here's the difference, okay, is that they're poor defensively and he's a great defender. So it's not even really Mitchell Robinson. It's just a guy that really plays defense when nobody seems to play it. But it is pretty overhyped at this point, because how much of a difference would he make against these great teams when you lose him by 20 points? And how long is it going to take him to get into game rhythm? And I'll see when I believe it, that he goes out there. Like, maybe he'll be available against Philadelphia. This is not the first time. We thought he was going to be ready in December, then January. Now February is almost over, like, so. And it's.
Don Legreca
By the way, guys, I'd ask you something.
Peter Rosenberg
It's the last week of February.
Don Legreca
I almost texted to the group yesterday, but I said maybe I did. I don't remember what I text you guys. I consider myself to be a pretty motivated broadcaster, I think people would say. I certainly like to have a. I like to work. I like to get out there and do a lot of different stuff.
Peter Rosenberg
A lot of jobs in the air, as they say. Sure, sure.
Don Legreca
Big ones. And yeah, I'm out here. Like, listen, I've traveled, like, way too many weekends since my daughter was born. I work. Is there something wrong with me that, like, when I turn on my tv, the amount that I see Stephen A on, I go thinking as him, I go, I'm good. How does he work that much?
Alan Hahn
Like, you mean he should just say no sometime?
Don Legreca
I just don't know how he does it.
Alan Hahn
Like, you know how much he makes, right?
Don Legreca
I get. But when do you get to spend it? When do you spend the money?
Alan Hahn
Listen, you gotta understand. Every weekday, every weekend night, you're getting paid that much. You. Hey, you're not new to espn, right?
Don Legreca
Who, me?
Alan Hahn
Like, they make you work. Like you gotta work.
Don Legreca
No, no.
Alan Hahn
The more you make, the less you work. That's not true.
Don Legreca
I just watch everybody in our.
Alan Hahn
In our company that make the most, they work the most.
Don Legreca
Yeah, no, you're probably that opposite.
Alan Hahn
A lot of other.
Don Legreca
That is true life.
Alan Hahn
Not at espn.
Don Legreca
That is a. That is a good point about espn.
Alan Hahn
That man works and he works for his money. Anything about what he makes?
Don Legreca
No, you can't say he's not working.
Alan Hahn
He works for every doubt.
Don Legreca
But here's my. Here's my thing. So I don't want to get in Stephen A's pocket, but that. We're already doing it. So let's say Stephen A. I know the rumors around his deal were something like 25 million a year, 30 million. He wanted some sort of. Whatever the number was, let's call it 20 million. Okay. The value that Stephen A. Brings to ESPN, I would say 12 million of that is that he is the main reason we get eyeballs during the day. He hits those first take. Those first take numbers every day. Listen, other people are great on that show. We know that. Mad Dog's been great on it. Other. I thought Max was great on it for a while. Dan can be great on it, Ryan can be. Everyone could be great on that show. But Stephen A. Is the bread and butter of first take. Star of that show. If I was, I don't know if I was able to make 12, 13 million from first take. Would I also want to spend my Friday night doing the ESPN game, my Sunday all day doing the national. It's just such a low.
Peter Rosenberg
Where is he gonna have time to run for president?
Don Legreca
And he's gotta plan a campaign.
Alan Hahn
I believe he's fourth ranked now in the probability.
Don Legreca
Yeah, he's come. What are we doing?
Alan Hahn
Well, did you also see though Works his ass off. Sunday was a busy day for us, NBA wise. I mean, it was. We started out with that 1:00, Knicks, Celtics. So NBA Countdown was at 12:30. And there's Malika and there's Stephen, KP, Wendy and Perk.
Don Legreca
Okay, Right.
Alan Hahn
And then at night we had a doubleheader and there was Malika and Wendy and Perk.
Don Legreca
They were there all day.
Alan Hahn
All day.
Don Legreca
Yeah. And the middle game of what? Dallas, Golden State.
Alan Hahn
Yep. Yeah, that was the. Right. We had the double head in the afternoon, double hair at night. One was on abc, that was on espn. And those three, the whole day, man.
Don Legreca
Yeah, I know. I just look up every time. I'm in different places I've traveled, I'm in a different part of my life. There's one thing consistent. Stephen A. Is always on my tv. Every hotel I'm in, Don. I turn on the tv. Stephen's with me. It's actually very reassuring. I always have Stephen.
Peter Rosenberg
He will take a significant amount of time off once the NBA finals are over.
Alan Hahn
That's correct.
Peter Rosenberg
Probably won't work very much in the summer.
Alan Hahn
No, and that is true.
Don Legreca
He'll take a nice little.
Peter Rosenberg
Take a nice shot.
Don Legreca
It's a little break there. No, he gets a little break there.
Peter Rosenberg
And again, this is the toy store. We're having fun.
Don Legreca
No, it's a fun gig.
Peter Rosenberg
It's just sports.
Don Legreca
It's a fun game. But he's got. He's got to look like Stephen A. Every time. You got to get dressed up, got to look like the tall drink of water that he is.
Alan Hahn
Does a pretty good job of it.
Don Legreca
Sure does.
Alan Hahn
800-919-3776. Adam is in California. Adam.
Caller
Hey, boys. It's great to talk to you again. I just wanted to touch base on the. The rule changes I called last week about the facial hair. This soft pivot to another Sinatra song is a big nothing burger. I mean, it's not like they're following a loss with the Cars for Kids jingle. So that is Nothing Burger.
Alan Hahn
You want to get people out of the building.
Peter Rosenberg
Listen, I'm sure this didn't have anything to do with it, but the first thing I thought of is that's the song they use to close out the Joker, which I thought was, like, perfect ending to that movie. That had nothing to do, but that's what I think. I mean, I grew up on that song, but it completely changed once they put it in the Joker.
Don Legreca
Didn't the Joker take place in the Bronx?
Peter Rosenberg
Went down those stairs right near Yankee Stadium. Right. I'm sorry.
Don Legreca
Wow.
Caller
I don't remember that. I got to rewatch that, Don. That's hilarious. But I hate to. I want to piggyback on what Peter was saying. And I hate to disagree with you, Don, because I love you, but the whole edit from a couple years ago, I believe it was after the Yankees missed the postseason. The year Judge got injured, I think that was complete. Nothing but complete eye wash for the fans. The new rules that they're putting out has nothing to do with that. As Peter said, it's just nothing but some for the fans. I don't know where these new rules are coming from, but at least the beard one has some sort of impact on the field, getting new prospects and new free agents or whatever. So I totally agree with that. But let's not lose our heads here. As long as they don't put names on the back of the jury, I'm 100% on board.
Peter Rosenberg
I respectfully disagree with you disagreeing with me on the audit, because I'm not sure what the heck the audit did. Like, what did they do?
Alan Hahn
Well, they need beards and apparently change this. Change the music. But if they put names in the.
Peter Rosenberg
Back of the jersey, they're not. They're not going to do that. The two things that I would.
Alan Hahn
Are you sure? Can you.
Peter Rosenberg
Two things.
Don Legreca
I'm telling you absolute certain. No, you can't. You can't say without Blue Zone. He can't.
Alan Hahn
No, I don't think he can't.
Don Legreca
And I'll say this, too, because I think everything that they've done so far we've said on this show, someone. I mean, in this time slot, I should say someone at some point. We've talked about the beard should go. We've talked about. Should you really play New York, New York after a loss? It's a little weird. I think they're going to take my idea about the names because I feel that I'm not a Yankee fan, so no one cares what I think. I think the Gray Road should have the names on the back. I think that would solve your problem.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know.
Don Legreca
And then you could sell those and people could get the jersey with the name on the back, but here they sell them with a pinstripe. I know, I know. But it's so whacked that they sell them. Sell them. Whereas at least if they existed on the road grays like the Red Sox do. Oh, God, you really hate that.
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Don Legreca
On the road grays.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know. What purpose does it serve? Like the beard thing. I understand the end game. Yeah.
Don Legreca
There's not much.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. The song, that's a nothing burger to me it is. But it would be so jarring to put the names on the back. People would go nuts, crazy. What would be the upside to doing that? Do you think you're losing out on free agents? Do you think there are fans that are begging to have judge above the 99? I know I was going to sign.
Alan Hahn
With the Yankees, but I want my name on the back of the jersey.
Peter Rosenberg
But go then buy the stupid jerseys that I don't even know why they sell in the first place.
Alan Hahn
Apparently the name on the back is more important than.
Peter Rosenberg
They're not going to do it. I'm telling you. There are two things I really feel strongly about. One, that I would be absolutely flat. I would be floored if they put the names on the back. The other one, not as much conviction, but pretty close, is that they would have an alternate jersey. I just don't think they would go there.
Alan Hahn
I think alternate jersey, well before name on the back, that I agree with.
Peter Rosenberg
But I don't think either of them.
Alan Hahn
You don't think alternate jersey either?
Peter Rosenberg
No, I just don't know who it benefits. Like, honestly.
Alan Hahn
I mean, that benefits the pockets. It benefits the pockets, but you would.
Peter Rosenberg
Be selling your soul just a bit as far. Listen, I know they put the ad on the jersey, but everybody was doing that and again, it didn't that big. It wasn't that big of a deal. Yeah, but because they put the ad on, could they. I just think the uniform is just too iconic. I do. I just don't think they would ever go there. It's embarrassing when they had the. The players weekend and they had those softball jerseys the major League baseball forced them to use. They're not doing that guy. Honestly, that would be a conversation. This is nothing compared to putting the name on the back.
Alan Hahn
They are doing the giveaways, which they've done in the past, which they have the hockey jersey, they have the basketball jersey.
Peter Rosenberg
That's fine.
Alan Hahn
Those are giveaways. That's fine. I don't care about that stuff.
Peter Rosenberg
You know what the first thing that I noticed they did, and it's going back a few years, the first thing that was un Yankee, like was the judge's chambers. Remember when they did that and realized, like, that's not what the Yankees. A little different.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, a little different.
Peter Rosenberg
So that kind of opened the door that, hey, we're looking at major creatures.
Alan Hahn
A thing without being a thing, right? Like bleacher creatures just were a thing. But they didn't have to turn it into something marketable. Judges Chambers was the first fun thing they did that was.
Peter Rosenberg
It was unsanky, like it was very.
Alan Hahn
Met, like, which isn't a bad thing.
Peter Rosenberg
But it was very met, like. So you know what, the thing with the Mets, like you might have met it pejoratively, but I don't look at that as a shot because, oh no, it's not. When the Mets came in in 62, they knew they were going to be bad and they wanted to be anti Yankee in the sense that we're going to have a mascot, we're going to be fun, we're going to let fans bring in.
Alan Hahn
They were the hippies, anti establishment, right?
Peter Rosenberg
As Casey Stengel used to say, the placards. And like, that's kind of what they were about and that's kind of their tradition, which is fine. And listen, more teams do it than not, right? If you look around the league, I mean, I cringe at cheerleaders at a hockey game, but you see some of the non traditional markets do that and you think outside the box. And I never had a problem with the Mets kind of having that be their foundation. Yankees didn't need to go there. Why? Because the Yankees were rattling off championships every. They didn't have to play those reindeer games. But in a world where there's way, listen, there's way more parity, there's more parity in baseball than football. Football tells you everybody, all the reason football is so popular is, is that everybody starts training camp thinking they can win the Super Bowl. Unless you're Kansas City or New England lately, nobody wins. But meanwhile they haven't been a repeat champion since the Yankees won back to back 25 years ago. So now you're kind of like everybody else. Still special, still probably slightly better than everybody else. But let's be honest, they've come back to the pack a little bit.

I can listen to music like this all day. Honestly, as a metalhead, I'm saying this.
Alan Hahn
I. I want Peter to go home and the movie. Hold Maya, look in her eyes and let. Let this song play and tell me you'll. You. 30 seconds. You're not weeping?
Don Legreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
You won't be able to control this.
Don Legreca
First time I ever saw your face.
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Don Legreca
So which one do we play last time?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, there was killing me Soft. Those are the two big ones? Yeah, those are the two most well known.
Alan Hahn
Again, Jake, what did you play before? I don't know.
Don Legreca
Why?
Peter Rosenberg
It was the closer I get to you.
Alan Hahn
Oh yeah, that. Which is also remarkable song to duets.
Peter Rosenberg
A bunch of great duets too. And she had hits going into the 80s.
Alan Hahn
But that song, the first time, just when you. Especially when it's a baby. Just try to hold your child and stare at her. While this song is.
Peter Rosenberg
Do you sing to. I sang to Jalen all the time.
Alan Hahn
I'm sure you do.
Peter Rosenberg
Marco didn't like it, didn't react to it.
Alan Hahn
Jalen slapped you right in the face, didn't he?
Don Legreca
No, he just.
Peter Rosenberg
He's built different. He's just. He's that guy.
Alan Hahn
Enough of the sappy crap.
Don Legreca
I've sung a little bit. I've sung a little bit, but so far more. It's like I'm just holding her and feeding her and listening to music with her.
Peter Rosenberg
I did a lot of listening to music in the nicu. I was playing like some metal and they told me, you know, you shouldn't do that. Your child will grow up aggressive. And I said, please leave. That's my child in the nicu.
Don Legreca
Hold on, hold on.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, hold on.
Don Legreca
In the nicu.
Peter Rosenberg
It wasn't like blaring it. It was just. I had it on the iPad.
Don Legreca
Wait, hold on. But what's kind of music?
Alan Hahn
What are you playing exactly?
Don Legreca
Can you give us an example? Of what?
Peter Rosenberg
You give me some lyrics. I gotta find it. All right. In the meantime, I want to be able to. I will get it. We'll rejoin the next segment. Okay, but the song that I sang to her, to Jalen, was Where have all the Flowers Gone?
Alan Hahn
Oh, wow, that is a.
Peter Rosenberg
You ever hear that?
Don Legreca
By who?
Peter Rosenberg
A lot of different bands, but it's Pete Seeger song.
Don Legreca
Okay, well, that doesn't sound like where.
Peter Rosenberg
Have all the Flowers Gone.
Don Legreca
Oh, yeah, I know.
Peter Rosenberg
Long time pass.
Don Legreca
But that's a normal song to sing to a child.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I'm gonna.
Alan Hahn
It's a lullaby.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm gonna. I'm gonna get it.
Alan Hahn
Okay, well, Game Time is brought to you by Tully Mardu Irish Whiskey. Because when it's game time, it's Tully time.
Don Legreca
Damn right it is.
Alan Hahn
One local action. One local in action tonight. Oh, this is a barn burner. Nets and the Wizards.
Don Legreca
Oh, like you dream about.
Alan Hahn
Like you dream about 7:30.
Peter Rosenberg
Somebody was very disrespectful during the break.
Alan Hahn
What happened?
Peter Rosenberg
I'm not going to say who it was. Somebody said, we've got no games tonight. And I believed him. And then. That's very disrespectful to me.
Alan Hahn
Nets and Wizards.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, the chances that we would open the show or even discuss Nets Wizards were very. Not a. Donna Peter with you until seven. And then we were going to have the great Brewers Pirates game coming up at 7:00. Do you know who I was gonna say? I thought you were on? I was gonna be the great Alan Hahn. And then I looked, I glanced down, I go, oh, we got a meaningless baseball game.
Don Legreca
Why are we airing this like you dream of it.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you, but I rolled with it.
Alan Hahn
Game Time brought to you by Tullimore Dew. The original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Tully Mordu or try the new Tullamore Du Honey. During tonight's action, glasses up to enjoying Tullamore Dean.
Peter Rosenberg
Same person just said to me, the company now agrees. Cause they don't have baseball. That is a. Oh, but again, these are nameless people. These are faceless, nameless Nick. You. I was playing like some metal and they told me, you know, you shouldn't do that. Your child will grow up aggressive. And I said, please leave.
Don Legreca
What would you do? Well, I haven't, truth be told.
Alan Hahn
Mind your business.
Don Legreca
I haven't even played. I haven't.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks.
Alan Hahn
That sounds like such a robotic thanks. Right?
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, well, that was on purpose. Thanks.
Don Legreca
Yeah, I had a purpose.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks. No, no, that was the thanks I gave to the Collier.
Alan Hahn
It's just the way you do it. It just.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you. I wanted.
Alan Hahn
Well, that one, it's like an automated. Thank you.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you.
Don Legreca
Now, by the way, I haven't even really played a lot of hip hop records yet with Maya, but you should go hockey. No, I will, I will.
Peter Rosenberg
I wouldn't right now.
Don Legreca
It's RB and singy song stuff and Billy Joel and Paul Simon, but I'm.
Peter Rosenberg
In the NICU doing no Adele. I haven't played around Skin to Skin, you know, for hours on end. I needed to play something.
Don Legreca
How many hours of Skin to Skin did you do?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, probably about an hour.
Don Legreca
Wow.
Peter Rosenberg
And a lot of whenever we did it, the doctors, the same doctor that I threw out said that that was really important, especially for your kids in the NICU preemies. That's something that's pretty important. But it gets, you know, I can only a little tedious. You know, I was listening, I actually text him like Chuck Caton was doing a game for Carolina in Edmonton, listening it at, you know, 3:00 in, you know, 1:00 in the morning. So there's a lot, a lot of varietals were being thrown at the kids back then. And I had Marco and Nancy had Jaylen, so there's a lot of Marco.
Don Legreca
Oh yeah. I just, I can't wait to hear the metal song he was playing for these three pound babies.
Alan Hahn
I really like, really excited about Tib and Brewster. Tib?
Caller
Yes. I can't believe you guys are saying this is a nothing burger about the song, man.
Don Legreca
Go ahead, take us through it. Take us through it.
Caller
Well, it's part of the emotion of the game. Like as a fan, I'm not going just to watch the Yankees and cheer my team and all that. This isn't a business thing for me. Like I'm going to hang out with my friend who meets me there for the game and I'm going with my husband and we're, you know, we're having a good time and singing the song on the way out is part of the tradition. And I also feel like that's part of the Yankees thing. Like one loss is no big deal. We're the freaking Yankees, okay? We don't care about one loss, so we don't need to play a different game just because we lost so long. Just because we lost the game. Like, who cares? It's one game. I know we're not really that great.
Don Legreca
Anymore, but I hate that I hear what you're saying.
Caller
It's part of the whole thing. And I can't tell you how many games I've gone to where there's, like, people nearby me who are, like. They're tourists. They're from a whole other country. They don't know anything about baseball, but they want to go to a Yankee game. And the Yankee game includes Frank Sinatra. I'm sorry.
Don Legreca
Well, you will get Frank, but you.
Peter Rosenberg
Got Frank when they lost. You got Liza.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. So things have changed back in the day.
Caller
Oh, yeah, well, that's true. But, yeah, I mean, you need the song. You need the song.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
You'll get it when they win.
Alan Hahn
You get it when they win, Tiff. And then I.
Caller
Like I said, I can't guarantee I'm gonna go to all whims.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, my dear God in heaven. Do you. You have the ability to listen to music other than paying to go to Yankee Stadium? They or Frank. Yeah, I'm pretty sure SXM has a Frank Sinatra channel.
Alan Hahn
Different.
Peter Rosenberg
I gotta go. I gotta get Legend seats out. I gotta pay 1200 bucks a game.
Alan Hahn
So just to hear it.
Peter Rosenberg
New York, New York, Frank Sinatra.
Caller
It.
Alan Hahn
It hits different in the stadium, and we're all singing.
Peter Rosenberg
Wait a minute.
Alan Hahn
It's up to you.
Peter Rosenberg
And how long have they been doing it? Because that song came out in, like, 80. So what were they doing pre 81 when they were winning those championships in 77 and 78? What were they playing? You don't know? Because it doesn't matter, actually.
Alan Hahn
What were they. Thank you, Tim, by the way, for sparking this conversation. No, they played the classic Yankee. That was what they played. Because that's all they had.
Peter Rosenberg
I think what they should do is when they lose, they should play the. Yes. Rain Delay song. Right. Because that's sad. And did you, you know about the Rain Delay song?
Alan Hahn
I'm aware of it.
Peter Rosenberg
It is the introduction to Yankee baseball on. Yes. Slowed down.
Don Legreca
We figured it out.
Peter Rosenberg
Did you know that? I know. If Alan knew.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, yeah, you can hear that. You know? Or they could just go. Why not just do that?
Don Legreca
Easy, simple, quick.
Alan Hahn
Just let you know. All right, get out.
Don Legreca
Time to go.
Alan Hahn
We lost. Get out of here. Ben. In East Village. Ben.
Caller
Sup, guys? I wanted to chime in on the convo about the recent changes the Yankees have been making with two really quick points. Number one being. I think what you guys said about these being the result of the audit that they mentioned is really interesting. And I was wondering if you think that bringing back the game aspect of Alzheimer's Day is on the docket as an upcoming change they can make. And my second point real quick is that, Don, I really liked what you were saying about the strength behind, like, what the captain's saying with these changes and, like, the beer change specifically. And it reminded me of the time when Nick Swisher was able to kind of influence the clubhouse etiquette with the music being played in the clubhouse. Although, even though, like, Derek Jeter was not for that, he was against, like, having music being played. So just an interesting story to kind of remember all these things, how they.
Peter Rosenberg
There's always been subtle changes. It's not the same Yankee team that you saw 30 years ago or 60 years ago or 100 years ago. There's. You evolve.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, I.
Peter Rosenberg
It just shows you how important this team is that every little thing that they do is scrutinized. That's why I thought it was a mistake having a press conference with the beard. You're making it bigger than it should be. All right, Just do it. Did you change the song and let everybody find out on opening day if you lose the game? It's like, why is this becoming a story, man? You know what? It is. Again, this all comes down to the fact that spring training is borderline stupid, Right? It lasts so long, a hundred media people are there because there's nothing else going on. And they've got to ask questions and do things when there's literally nothing going on.
Alan Hahn
But the access you get allows you to have countless stories.
Peter Rosenberg
Right? Because, again, I feel bad for Boone. He's got to talk, like, a billion times, right? And a lot of times, there's nothing to say. I just talked to you before the game, got to talk to you after it was a meaningless game. And then he'll talk at batting practice the next day.
Alan Hahn
General soreness.
Peter Rosenberg
Nothing changed from the loss yesterday to batting practice the next day. But there'll be still 50 there people there, and they all got to ask a question. I don't have a question. What do I do? I don't know.
Caller
You know what? I don't know.
Alan Hahn
What is that? What are you doing?
Don Legreca
He's doing the laugh.
Peter Rosenberg
Just being annoying.
Don Legreca
Did I get some dog?
Alan Hahn
Is that media?
Peter Rosenberg
Jacob.
Don Legreca
Jacob, can you give me some. Don media laughs, please? When you get a second, go ahead.
Alan Hahn
What is that?
Don Legreca
There's more of them. Lots of them. Don hates the laughing. Media scrum.
Peter Rosenberg
You've been there.
Alan Hahn
Oh, God.
Peter Rosenberg
Where a player or a coach will say something that's completely unfunny. A mild joke, but instead of sending the message, you're not funny. So I'm not gonna laugh.
Alan Hahn
Raucous laughter. Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
It's the. I'm telling you, if you. If any of these coaches or players wanted to get a second life after they retire, go on the comedian circuit, but only invite media, you'll kill.
Don Legreca
Every time.
Peter Rosenberg
Every time. My hearing is. I'm telling you, I've been in the scrums. And when I was a kid, I would say it really Don come up with a question because it'll seem silly. You're sitting there with your microphone. Ask a question. Be relevant. Be somebody. And then I realized I didn't have a question. You know what I did? I laid out, didn't embarrass myself and culminated a career instead. Don't give him a credential anymore. I'm just telling you. And I'm not talking about anybody specifically. I'm just talking about the whole. You've all been there, Alan, You've been there. Oh, God, yes. Have you been sitting there. Microphone and obviously one on ones. But I've been talking in a scrum. There's 25 other reporters.
Alan Hahn
One guy.
Peter Rosenberg
There's no need to ask a question. Everything's gonna be covered.
Don Legreca
We're wrapping it up. Time to go.
Peter Rosenberg
And you sit there and you go, boy, I could really be. Make something of myself if I just had a question.
Don Legreca
And here we go. And what you get is.
Peter Rosenberg
And then you ask a question, and it's just something stupid. Lay out. I'm telling you.
Alan Hahn
We have. We don't want you to lay out. We have tons of calls to get to. So we will get to the song.
Peter Rosenberg
That I play, oh, for my daughter.
Alan Hahn
The lullaby that Don played in the nicu.
Don Legreca
Can't wait for this.
Peter Rosenberg
I wonder if you've heard of the band.

Peter Rosenberg
Kmfdm. Yeah.
Alan Hahn
Off the walls in the house.
Peter Rosenberg
There's rumors of what KMFDM stands for.
Alan Hahn
Let's throw some theories out.
Peter Rosenberg
There is that they're not a big fan of Depeche Mode. Kill Mother Blank. Depeche Mode.
Alan Hahn
Oh, wow.
Don Legreca
Really?
Alan Hahn
That's what.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. I don't know how true it is, but that. I like that you don't like that song. That's a good song.
Alan Hahn
Meat is.
Peter Rosenberg
And believe me, Jalen is the Is timid flower. It didn't affect her at all. So relax yourself.
Alan Hahn
I just. No, but. But Marco's probably like. You put this on. He's probably ready to run through a wall.
Peter Rosenberg
He was ready to run through a wall anyway.
Alan Hahn
Right?
Peter Rosenberg
He's just. That's just. He's.
Alan Hahn
Is he the first one out? Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
He's 15 minutes older than Jalen.
Alan Hahn
His way. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
However, did not breathe for the majority of those 15 minutes. They had to resuscitate him out of the womb. That's so.
Don Legreca
That's crazy.
Alan Hahn
Rebellious again.
Peter Rosenberg
He is that guy.
Caller
Right?
Don Legreca
He didn't care.
Alan Hahn
I love it. I love that.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's see how they react to me not breathing for 10 minutes.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don Legreca
This should be interesting.
Alan Hahn
Let me make them beg.
Peter Rosenberg
While everybody's getting excited about Jalen coming out, they're not going to notice because I'm blue.

Nine minutes away from a 6:00 ENN like it's supposed to be.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't think we can go back.
Alan Hahn
You ready for it?
Peter Rosenberg
Unfortunately, we will.
Alan Hahn
I think we should hot six on the platter.
Don Legreca
You haven't even heard it yet, Dom, but you feel that confident?
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, you can sit in silence for 20 minutes. It'll be better than any 4:30 enn that we've ever had. I'm going to be Aaron Judge to this radio station with the, with the beard policy. I am going to be outwardly against the move back to 430.
Alan Hahn
We had a standard. We should keep it that way.
Peter Rosenberg
If you didn't like it at 6, then you know what?
Alan Hahn
You shouldn't have been listening.
Peter Rosenberg
Don't listen.
Alan Hahn
Let's take Matt in New Jersey. What's up, Matt?
Caller
How you doing?
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks for taking the call. So, a couple things. I always thought that the, the retail jerseys were sold with the names on them because it had something to do with the players Association. I heard that's, that's not the case. But, you know, I got a number 13 Antonio Osuna jersey in 2002. Okay, 2003.
Caller
And then that got.
Peter Rosenberg
Because I always wore number 13, like my whole life.
Caller
And then, you know, my parents gave me that and then that became an A rod jersey for the next like 10 years. And I think there's something to do.
Peter Rosenberg
With, you know, if you had a number 25 Yankee jersey, you got a.
Caller
Lot of mileage out of that the last 20 years or so.
Peter Rosenberg
And I think it's only a matter of time before we see them start.
Caller
Playing on field with those navy blue.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, batting practice style jerseys. That City Connect program is, has been so successful and, and, you know, Boston's adding a second city Connect.
Caller
I think it's only a matter of.
Peter Rosenberg
Time before the Yankees say, you know what? To me, that would be a bridge too far. Remember, they haven't sold naming rights to Yankee Stadium. Why? Because they believe Yankee Stadium is a brand and they're willing to sacrifice certain money because they want their stadium to stand alone. That's that, that uniform is the same thing. It's just as iconic. So matter of fact, I would probably have less of a problem naming rights to the stadium than I would changing the jerseys because that's. That stadium is brand new. It's not even on the Same ground as the old place. So I would have less of a problem with that. But the. No, they can't put names on the back. Or having the city connect. All the city connect. Jerseys are garbage anyway.
Alan Hahn
But I think they're going to do it. That's the one. I think they'll do the names on the back. I'm with you. They know they can't, but the city connect. You can. You can. Like the spring training uniforms. Remember back in the day, it was always, you got the pinstripe pants and the dark blue top. That was always like a spring training thing. Like, I'm not a big jersey guy, but that was one jersey I actually did get from way back because I thought it was cool. But, you know, that's why I don't think it'd be that outrageous to do.
Peter Rosenberg
People would die.
Alan Hahn
You really think a city connect would be that big of a deal?
Peter Rosenberg
People would go nuts. You see how they're going nuts?
Alan Hahn
They'd riot.
Peter Rosenberg
The song, for God's sake.
Don Legreca
Well, they would really care about a city connect. It's just a thing.
Alan Hahn
It's a thing. Well, we'll see.
Peter Rosenberg
The only time the Yankees have ever played a game of meaning without the pinstripes was the silly, stupid players weekend.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Because they don't make enough money. We got to give them their own weekend. And they wear softball jerseys and. And with. That's why I love Brett Gardner. He's always my favorite Yankee. He didn't want to do put something stupid on the back, you know, and they were ridiculous. But that was an initiative. They had no choice. But when given the choice, since they formed. Those have been the uniforms. Pretty much, I guess. I think there was a time there were no pinstripes, but when they went to the pinstripes by choice, unless they're being forced by the league by some mandate, they've never done that. You know, you could talk about Frank Sinatra. New York, New York.
Alan Hahn
That's.
Peter Rosenberg
That's nothing. The beard policy, that was nothing. 50 years. 50 years, right. It's the Yankees. They've been around for 100 years. The names on the back of the jury, people would hemorrhage from the eyes. Honestly. Would be really bad. Like scanners.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. Not something.
Peter Rosenberg
And rightly so.
Alan Hahn
Anybody wants to say no, then that's why when you start to see what judge said, the standards starting to slip, you start to say to yourself, all right, like judge said, all right, you want to do this, fine. But let's not just start taking away all these standards. Make sure we maintain something. So I'm glad Judge said what he said. Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. I don't want to know how the sausage is made, man. I just want to know what.
