Peter Rosenberg
The Mets welcome in the Rockies with coverage beginning immediately following us on 880 at 630 and the Yankees visit the Dodgers in a World series rematch at 10 10. Tullamore due the original triple distilled, triple blended and triple cast matured Iris whiskey. Be sure to grab a Tullamore Dew or try the new Tullamore Dew honey during today's action. Glasses up to enjoying Tullamore Dew responsibly if you heard the traffic. Apparently it's bad out there on a Friday getting ready for the weekend as we close in on the summer. But Nick, fans really excited about the fact that there is going to be a game tomorrow, 8 o' clock and they have a chance so don't to on the road guys.
Alan Hahn
And Don, do you do you do you agree with me now with my take though from yesterday that because of the way they won the playoffs are fully back on. Everyone is fully hyped up again of this fan base.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes. Got it right. That's what I mean because this fan base always skews positive. So I just want a chance because I'll tell you what, I was in the building now Alan's in the building for Knicks way more than I am. But I've been in that building a lot that for a team that was down 3:1 I thought that building was up. They were excited. Now the Knicks got off to a great start. Was like 60 run to start the game. And you know, but I've been in buildings where there's apprehension, there's a nervousness, there's a fatality to a finality to like you're going into the building going I'm in this man. But it's not, it's not going to they were amped because they feel like that they still believe I give Knick Fans a lot of credit, sometimes irritatingly so positive about what's going on. So the fact that they were able to bring it down 3:1 and win in the fashion in which they won, as you said, Peter, that I think a lot of Nick fans really believe they can do this.
Don Hahn
And Jalen Brunson didn't hesitate like out of the gate, like you saw him. Like we always talk about this in these types of games. You're looking for your stars to play like stars. Obviously Towns had had some great moments as well, but it was the tone setting by the best player on your team. And you could argue the best player in the series in Jalen Brunson. He had 32 points. He had 14 points in the first quarter. Got him off to a great start. But that was. Guys, this, these are the things that come out of these games. Because you know when you're watching a playoff run, you're just game to game to game and you're flying through the emotions. But sometimes you got to just kind of get in the helicopter, get that aerial view, look down and like, let me see the whole thing of what. Just what has gone on here. That was his 10th 30 point game. 30 or five assists, right. His 10th time in this, this playoffs. 10 that he's had 30 points and at least five assists in a game. There's a list of now four people who have ever done that in NBA history. One of them did it this year is as well SGA. The other two, only guys you might have heard of them. LeBron James, Michael Jordan. I know that's the list. That's the kind of thing you know when we've talked about Knick fans for years have always been like, just want a guy that can be one of the best players in the league. It's been so long. A guy you can really believe in rely on. You got that guy in what he's doing. All SGA did was win MVP this year. And Jalen Brunson is doing those kinds of things. That's what this run has been. And him setting the tone the way he did to start the game, does that not tell you this is a special player? This is not just a, you know, pretty good. This is one of the NBA's best players. And that this is at the biggest stage, the biggest moment and his team facing elimination. I gave you the numbers earlier. When the team lost a playoff game this year, they're six and one and all he's doing is averaging. What, what did I say? 30 and 7, shooting 50% so there's a lot to consider when it comes to what he's done in this run and to continue to establish himself as one of the great Knicks of all time already. And he's 28 years old.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it's special, but there are going to be those contingent of fans are going to want to see this be done, become to finally win that. And, and I look at. It's the thing that's out there, like, can you beat the Pacers? Yeah. I mean, being down 3:1 makes it very, very difficult, but going in, it almost felt like a fait accompli. This team was going to go to the NBA Finals, but in all likelihood, even if they came back and won this series, they're probably not winning the title because the Thunder just looked like they're unbeatable right now.
Don Hahn
Yeah. Although Jay will said this morning that the way the Knicks played last night, it said. I saw. Jay said that if they could play like that, they have a shot at beating the Thunder. That's how. That's what we have the cut like. Listen to what Jay says here. I wonder if. If what you saw last night, if you would agree with what Jay said.
Alan Hahn
That team that we saw last night, where Carl Anthony Towns is aggressive, Jalen Brunson setting the tone, quarters one through three defensively picking up Tyrese Halliburton full court, turning him multiple times, taking the.
Peter Rosenberg
Air out of the ball.
Alan Hahn
That team's defensive performance in taking care of the Rock is not only the reason why they have a chance to win this series, but that gives them the fighting shot against okc. I will still have OKC favored, but if that shows up, that will give them their best odds to compete for a world championship. The question is, I don't know which team is going to show up. That's what happens.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, he just answered the question. That's why God love them. It's kind of a foolish thing to say. Yeah, if they play that way, but they've been maddeningly inconsistent all playoffs. They don't do that every single night. That's the problem for this team to be able to win a title. They've got to do what they did last night six more times. Have they even done it six times in these playoffs? Like that's the problem is.
Don Hahn
I think it's twice.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, twice.
Don Hahn
Game three in this series. But yeah, even OKC doesn't do it every night. No, they just do it more often. But. But even they had like. They had a stinker. Their game three was an absolute joke. Of a game embarrassing. They were down by 45 points. An NBA champion can be down by 45 points. But so that just shows you it is hard for a team to bring it every night at that level. But can you do it four times more than your opponent can in a seven game series?
Peter Rosenberg
And now the reason it could happen in this series is because maybe it was the desperation of facing elimination for the first time in these playoffs that brought it out of them. As you said, they never can handle prosperity. Even in the game last night we were sitting together, the Pacers have the ball and it's all of a sudden they cut it to a four point lead. They've got the ball. And Allen's like, watch, they're going to nail a three here. And for as great a start as they had, they're only going to have a one point lead. Now. The Knicks got the stop, but it's like that's what happens. Like all of a sudden, in the blink of an eye, this great start, the building's going nuts. And there was a potential going into the second quarter with just a one point lead.
Don Hahn
It was bad enough, remember that it was 25, 18, had the ball and I'm thinking, okay, you got to score here, you got to keep push. They don't get it. And then next thing you know, you look up and it was 25 to 23 or whatever it was. And then they ended up 27, 23 to end the quarter.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, it's that. Those are the things that. But that, that's the NBA. There's going to be runs and you're not going to play a perfect 48 minutes no matter how hard you try. But they were facing elimination for the first time and they came up with that effort. So can I wrap my mind around, oh, maybe you do it in six and seven because you're facing desperation in both of those games. But now they go up against the Thunder and do it four out of seven against the team that I think is even better than the Pacers. But, you know, first things first, let's get there. I understand what Jay is saying, but anybody could say that if Minnesota put the effort together that they put into game three against the Thunder, they would win the series. But it just. You're not capable of doing that every single night. You're not.
Don Hahn
But isn't the point, what Jay's suggesting is, is that going in, you look at the Knicks as a team that should be the better team in the series, but they've only for two games been the better team, you'd say two and a half games or two and three quarters games, because game one, they were the better team throughout the majority of that game. And so that. I think there's something to be said about that as well. It's sort of. And will. This will never stop until the series is over. They will be chasing game one. They are still chasing game one.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
And that's the part that's frustrating. And Don, when you said it, it was so prophetic. They're going to have to win five games.
Alan Hahn
Yep. And it's, and it's interesting, they sort of exchanged giveaway games. But the fact of the matter is the Knicks are still the team in that spot as we head into game six that needs to get back the one that they lost. And then even when they get it, if they were to tie the series, then you got to do it again on Monday night.
Peter Rosenberg
But every team, that's why the best team doesn't always win. When we say best team, the team that has the better players, I think you look at the Knicks and you say they're better because I think they've got better players. But the better team is the team that no matter what they are, they bring it consistently and they find ways to win. I mean, there's plenty of teams out there I could say are way more talented than other teams, but they, they can't put it together. They can't put it together in that post season, for whatever reason, they, they, they couldn't find the consistency necessary to win 4 out of 7 games. And, and that's kind of what this. Too many times we walk away going, that's not it, man. What's going on. Last night, it was it. And we know what they're capable of doing, but part of being a championship caliber team is doing it more times than not. Yeah, the Thunder had an occasional hiccup, but they're not inconsistent. And when they do have a hiccup, it's a big margin for error, like being up 20 in a series and losing the first game in Minnesota and coming right back and getting back to three 1. And you saw the Knicks put together a really good solid effort that they're capable of in, in game three of this series to make it two one only to give it right back in the next game and be down 31 again. So that's what's so maddening about them is they can't string all that together. And that's part of being a great team. So I understand what Jay's saying this is what if they play that way they can, they can win a championship. But the fact that they can't play that way on a consistent basis tells you they're just not quite there yet.
Don Hahn
But they've gotten two of the last three games after losing the first two. And, and again I keep going back to in the first two games they were the better team for, for the majority of the first three and change of the court. I mean again they, they blew a double digit lead with minute three minutes to go. So like it's not like they've been thoroughly outplayed. In fact, the point differential in this series, guys, is now in favor of the Knicks because of this 17 point win. It's, it's crazy what this series has been, but it's all about chasing game one. It continues to be about that. And I'll give you the history because I love it because it's Nick's Pacers and there's always chapters and everything else. And I think I mentioned this yesterday. The Pacers have only once, they've never blown a 31 lead series lead. They've only once had a team get a game seven. And that team was the Knicks in 95. And that series began the same way. Game one at the Garden. Knicks in control until Reggie Miller goes eight points in 8.9 seconds. And a win turned into a stunning loss. And they chased that game all the way through, but they managed to get the win in game five, get the win in game six to force the game seven at the Garden. And they had the ball in their best player's hands with, with a chance to win. And he missed the finger roll, but it was right there. And all I'll say is this. Wouldn't you sign up right now for Jalen Brunson with the ball in the same situation and see if he can make the shot that sends him to the finals.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, definitely more so than anybody else that you can think of in the NBA at this point. But you know what last night did, guys, as good, as great as it is, if they end up not winning the series, the win yesterday is going to mean that game one cost you.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Like if you lost last night, you lost and you lost in five games. So maybe you could wrap, you look.
Alan Hahn
Out mat in the end you look back and you feel like you're outmatched.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. You know what? The better team won. Yeah, we blew game one, but we're going to win the series anyway. That now is going to haunt you because now you've got a Game six. So even if you lose Game six, you could think to yourself, wow, if we had taken Game one, we'd be going home for a Game seven. You know, and that's the thing that really stinks, you know, so as much as you wanna. If you're not gonna win the series, if you didn't want Game one to haunt you, the quicker you would have gone out, the better.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
But now it's gonna be. It's always gonna be there, man.
Don Hahn
Yeah. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
What might have been now, the fallacy, the predetermined outcome, right? Like, did the Pacers play the way they played last night because they knew they were up 3:1? You know, did the Knicks take game two because they were down OT, like, so you don't know how it's all gonna play itself out, but you just do the math and you say, God, we should be going to Indiana up 32 in this series.
Don Hahn
And Halliburton put it all on him again after the game and vow that he will be better for Game six. And so that's the first thing you're wondering about going into when Game six begins, is the Knicks approach to how they guarded him. It was much different that they all admitted it. Even Halliburton said he's like, yeah, they did some different things with me. But the base of what they do defensively did not change. And the obvious thing that they did was they had Mikhail Bridges pick him up at the other foul line, 50 plus feet from the basket and put pressure on him so that he wasn't downhill into offense quickly. And they weren't getting a shot up with the clock at 17. They were only getting their offense started with the clock at 17. And that change, that slowed the pace down, it slows them down. And it played into what the Knicks wanted to do. And as Legs told us, we had Tim Legler on earlier, the other thing was, is how the Knicks were in attack mode into the paint. And it was that the Pacers couldn't just score quickly or get the ball out and get up the floor fast. When you're taking jump shots, it's easier to do that than when somebody's beating you in the paint and getting to the basket, because everybody's kind of in that all. They're all stuck together in the paint. So how does Halliburton try to change it? How does he try to attack it? And does he either continue to struggle with it if. If so, it'll be a compelling game, or does he go back into what we saw in game four where they have a counter and then the Knicks once again start getting exposed with some of their defensive issues. It's, you know, it's the adjustments from game to game, but it's also the stars. You know, we love talking about play the bench and play guys off the bench and we're going to have unsung heroes and X factors. But we all know the series is won because of the stars. And Brunson answered Halliburton's epic game four with an epic game five and an epic performance by him. He had 30 points and three quarters. So now it's which of the stars continues to be the bigger star that leads his team. That's why I kept thinking this is going to be a seven game series because they're so evenly matched. But is Brunson able to play a higher level than what Halliburton Kent.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, and Knicks are 6 and 2 on the road, so they shouldn't feel intimidated going back to Indiana tomorrow. Danny on Long island. You're on ESPN New York. What's up man?
Caller (Danny)
Danny from Long island who is in Forest City, North Carolina watching the young man play in the Carolina Collegiate League.
Peter Rosenberg
Nice.
Nordstrom Advertiser
Wow.
Caller (Danny)
All good stuff. All good stuff. Best part of the trip, guys. I wander down the main street, I walk, I wander into the North Carolina video Arcade Museum. $8 an hour. Play every game you ever played.
Peter Rosenberg
What?
Caller (Danny)
Bar none? Games, pinballs and TV set up with the game systems that we played with back in the 80s.
Alan Hahn
Wait now. Unlimited?
Don Hahn
Unlimited.
Caller (Danny)
$8 an hour. I walked from Asteroids to Pac man to Frogger. I blew George Costanza's record out, by the way. I could have fell into that wormhole the entire day and forgotten that I have a 6 o' clock lunch date with my dinner day of my son. Unbelievable walk through time.
Don Hahn
That's awesome that I don't remember where.
Caller (Danny)
I put my keys 10 minutes ago, but when I stand in front of a Pac man machine, I know exactly how to juke that blue back out of his head.
Don Hahn
Do you remember obviously there was never timeout in the mall that had all the arcades and stuff like that, right? Like, do you think that if they brought that back with exactly what Danny said where you have like, you know, Xboxes and all the different game game consoles they have and you just can play. You could you pay, pay to play all day. You have those with big screen TVs along with, you know, old, old time arcade. Do you think that would be because, you know, kids have nowhere to go anymore Again, like it's the same thing, but the malls are still there and people still go to them. Do you think that would work?
Peter Rosenberg
I think.
Don Hahn
Or is that just past.
Peter Rosenberg
There's a place that's similar to that in Somerville called Yestercades. Oh, they have that. There's. And what I find. What I find with Marco. I play the hockey video games. His favorite still, NHL 94.
Don Hahn
It's the best ever.
Peter Rosenberg
They like the. Some of the throwback games they like. So even though it's really punch, you know. Thank. Well, you had a fraud thing, so I'll let you finish in a second.
Caller (Danny)
I do have a fraud thing that, that It's.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not just for the adults. The kids can get into it too. So what do you got with fraud wise?
Caller (Danny)
So the kid who's 21, grew up a big Curry fan. Like every kid in America, he suddenly thought the game was just three point shooting. He was very good. Played through high school. Curry, Big Curry fan. Last week, he's home for a week. He goes to the Nick watch party with a Knick jersey on. I said now. He said, well, I wasn't never really a Warriors fan as much as I was a Curry fan. Now, there were other jerseys. As Alan knows, these kids collect jerseys. There was, yeah. I still, I still have the Jeremy Lynn jersey. There was lots of jerseys throughout the years, but he was a big Curry kid. Loved the game, loved the way he played. Is he now. Is he now required to be a Warrior fan for the rest of his life?
Don Hahn
Ooh, Don gave.
Peter Rosenberg
No, listen, how old is he?
Caller (Danny)
21.
Peter Rosenberg
So he. 21. So he probably fell in love with basketball like a decade ago.
Don Hahn
But he had a Jeremy Lynn jersey. You said. Right.
Caller (Danny)
Listen, Alan, you know when you try to fill up the Christmas stocking, the kids love the jerseys.
Don Hahn
Yeah. I mean, the players, it's a different generation. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
I. I gotta say, I would think a lot of NBA fans and. Danny, thank you for the phone call. Listen and tell me what you think about. My answer is that you. You do like other players. There's never been a rivalry between the Knicks and the Warriors. All right, all right. If you say, well, I like Curry.
Don Hahn
Although Curry, remember, that's the. That's the one that got away. That's.
Peter Rosenberg
I know, but it wasn't like.
Alan Hahn
But it didn't make it a ride.
Peter Rosenberg
Curry's fault.
Don Hahn
No, no, no, I know, but I'm saying, like, that's, that's one that hurts.
Peter Rosenberg
So I mean, you can have favorite players and it's Not a rival.
Don Hahn
No.
Peter Rosenberg
So I, I, I'm, I'm, I'm cool with that. Like a lot of people, a lot, especially younger kids, they, they like teams, but they also like other players and it's kind of what makes the sport as popular as it is, quite honestly.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So you're going to let it go? I will let it go. Yeah. I'll allow it.
Don Hahn
I think I agree with the ruling.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, now if, if it, if it was, you know, back in the day and I was just, I listen, I, I just, I just love Reggie Miller. I'm sorry. No, that, no, no, there's gonna be certain guys. No, it's not.
Alan Hahn
Can't do it.
Peter Rosenberg
Somebody in your division arrival. No, that, that doesn't make it like.
Don Hahn
I'll tell you what, I'll, I'll admit this. The closest I came to fraudulent behavior was the fact that I really, really loved Larry Bird. And I'm, you know, again, as a kid, I'm a Knicks fan, but like, you know, the Celtics were on CBS every Sunday. Every Sunday. And you know, they were a great team and they were fun to watch, but I just thought he was just so freaking good.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, you can appreciate, but I didn't have a Bird jersey around with a Bird jersey.
Don Hahn
No, I never wore a Bird jersey. But the fact that like I just, you know, like I, when they were in the playoffs because the Knicks weren't most of the time, you know, I was all about, you know, like seeing him and watching him and I loved watching them win because of him. But I was never a Celtics fan.
Alan Hahn
No, it's, it's sounding, it's sounding similar though.
Don Hahn
It's close.
Peter Rosenberg
It's right there. I think you appreciate other players and stuff, for sure. Carlos Mendoza spoke some interesting stuff. For trip details and to enter, check out the ESPN New York app and find the Fairmont Mayagoba tile to submit your entry. Mangrove is a shrubber tree that's right near the beach. So Yankees and the Dodgers, that's the series to watch, certainly the rematch of the World Series. And as Alan said before, let's not get too caught up in it. You know, as far as like the Yankees sweep, that's doubt to be something. But it's not going to make up for what happened last year. But it's still cool to get them together. Two of the best teams in baseball for sure. Mets are taking on the Rockies. Mets took two out of three from the White Sox. And now we'll see if they can take care of the worst team in Major League Baseball. But Carlos Mendoza spoke because right now Juan Soto just can't hit. He's batting.224. He's been a mess. Carlos, in the pregame today is. Let's see if I get it here, right. Has it just disappeared on me? Is it a struggle to try to get Soto going offensively?
Don Hahn
No, I mean, he's going to get going and we've seen it, you know, pretty much seems like every day he's hitting couple balls hard, like the results haven't been there, but he's going to get going. I said it last game here, he didn't hit ball hard, but there was something there. Like whether it was the balance, there was something there. But again, every day I sit here and like you look at the numbers, he's going to get going here pretty soon.
Peter Rosenberg
See, there's two things at play here. Yeah, he's going to get going. He'll play to the back of his baseball card. But I'm tired of these managers, all that. We, we see something, it's results. Okay, you see something. I need to see hits. I need to see RBIs. He's not hitting with runners in scoring position. He's got eight home runs. But you know, I still think he could do a better job with extra base hits. He's not a great defender, he's not a good, great baserunner. But he's supposed to be a great offensive player. So a little tired of hearing about, I'm seeing this, I'm seeing that. I need to see hits, I need to see some offense. And he says, have you felt the need to talk to Soto?
Don Hahn
Not really. You know, because he knows he's in a good place. So treat him the same way I.
Anthony Pusick
Treat the other guys, too.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know what you say to a guy that's struggling, Peter. I mean, it's one thing about the not busting it down the first baseline or whatever. We have a conversation. How do you tell a guy hit, he wants to hit, right?
Don Hahn
Hey, stop struggling.
Alan Hahn
Hit. Better see that ball.
Don Hahn
Hit it next time.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, you aim for the ball.
Peter Rosenberg
But I'm telling you, it didn't get a lot of play.
Don Hahn
Try this torpedo bat.
Peter Rosenberg
I mentioned it on, on sportsmanlike today. He should be sending those Jeter gift baskets to the Knicks because if it wasn't for the Knicks, we'd be talking a lot more about this. But that day game against the White Sox, not a lot of fans because that was a game that was shifted from night to day. But you started to hear some boos after another Ofer. And now you're going to get, you know, it's a weekend series. Rockies aren't good. But you just heard during the traffic reports, it's, it's. They've got fireworks tonight. You're going to get big crowds. And I'm telling you, especially against a lousy team like the Rockies, he starts going over four, he's going to start to hear it. Yeah, big time.
Don Hahn
Yeah. So we have. Because Stern's talked today also about him. The same kind of thing is like the Mets keep talking and it's the right thing to be saying because it's what we all expect. It's, you know, he's going through it right now. He's got to work his way out of it. But history tells you he will because of his incredible talent in hitting. And it's a matter of time. But they've got to live through this right now. It's not fun. It sucks. Like, come on again. And I know to make the big deal about the contract is the low hanging fruit. But there is also something to be said about the new toy that you get as a franchise regardless of the contract. When your team signs a star, one of the biggest names in the game, you kind of are like excited, you know, it's like opening the gift and the toys broken and now they got to return it. And you got to wait for your parents to return the toy and then the new one to show up before you could play with it. It's the same thing. It's like you're just waiting for it to work. Like, come on, I want to see it. We were excited about what you can be and you're not that yet. And so that you're, you're past Memorial Day, you're almost into June months.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm saying Sunday will be June 1st. And you know that. You know.
Don Hahn
So do you have a problem with it? Do you have a problem then with the fans starting to grumble, even drop a few booze at this point? Because it's, well, it's the first year of 14 years, but no, but it's still. With three months in, at some point, I kind of want to see it because there's been so much hype about it.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. I mean, listen, I don't advocate booing, but I get it. You know, that's what happens in New York. It, it's kind of a rite of passage for these guys who come over and they don't live up to expectations and the fans are disappointed and, and, and they're going to boo. I mean, he's got a, he's got to understand that I'm not going to get mad at the fans. They pay good money. They want to see production, and you're not getting it. And it's, I do think it's going to come around, but I didn't think it was going to take this long. But, you know, the Mets continue to win series and they're a playoff team right now, and hopefully they'll turn it around. Yankees, Dodgers. We talked about it earlier in the show. It's a joke that none of these games run.
Don Hahn
Yes, it is.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, I felt bad for Michael flying back. He was available to come back to do the show yesterday because he's not doing any of the games of the series. And it's nice to be on national television. But, you know, you got apple tonight, Fox tomorrow night, ESPN on Sunday Night Baseball. I'm sure the Mets lost Sny in the three games the Mets and the Dodgers played last weekend. But what are you anticipating? Allen, as a Yankee fan, you're not going to be able to make up for what happened last year, but you're having a great year. But this is a nice test, right? I mean, this is one of the best teams in baseball. And never mind last year. It's a great way to kind of measure up. Hey, we've gotten off to a great start here. Let's see if we can keep it going against a really good team.
Don Hahn
Yeah, but like, you got freed to start it out, which I think is great. Right. Because right out of the gate, you get your ace right now. And he has been off To a great start. You talk about again, the new toy. I mean, he's been tremendous. So you get him on the first. So it's almost like the tone setter for a series. But Free doesn't have the same history, at least in pinstripes against this Dodger team. I don't like. You're right, you can't make up for a loss in the World Series. But isn't there a little something extra to this series? If you're Aaron Judge, if you like several guys on that team that were there last year that know all the things that were said, the embarrassing game five, the blown lead, the whole thing about how you were sent home on your home field. I guess in that kind of a. In that kind of environment, there's got to be. It's. You could. It's too early in the season. It's. I don't care. This is the kind of. Just like the Met Series, you need juice early in the season. You. You need these kind of moments that feel like a playoff atmosphere, that let's see what we're about. When there's some pressure and some intensity. I think you need to kind of see. I'd like to see a locked in Judge, which he's been right. I'd like to see the team though, play as clean as they can. Just tight on all the fundamentals. Just because, you know, that's what was the embarrassing look of the team last year in the playoffs.
Peter Rosenberg
I get it, you know, but even if you sweep them, I don't know if it's going to make that feeling go away.
Don Hahn
It's temporary. It feels good. It doesn't make it go.
Alan Hahn
You feel better and it feels better than getting swept.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, naturally.
Don Hahn
But. But also don't you think too again losing Soto the pivot to what you were able to do. Bellinger, Goldschmidt, obviously freed if you can play, if you look a lot better and take them on and take two out of three the end of the weekend. No, it doesn't make up for the World Series. But doesn't it tell you as a fan, okay, the 36 was it 35 and 20 that that start now it's a little more legitimized because of handling the defending champs.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it's. It's very unfair.
Don Hahn
But it's just.
Peter Rosenberg
It just the way it is is that, you know, the American League is weaker than the National League. Right. So the fact that the Yankees are dominant in the American League, we knew that that's why they kept losing players and Vegas still had them going to the World Series as the favorite because the American League's not great. And this is, this is a, they're still a test because, because if they get swept or lose two out of three, you know what the narrative is going to be. All right, yeah, you're good in your little junior circuit over there, but what are you going to do against these, these dominant National League teams? Well, they took care of the Mets. The Mets were a playoff team last year. They took two out of three. And now it's the Dodgers. And so this is all part of the breakdown of our. Exactly how good are you? Because, you know, the Yankees get graded differently. You're supposed to win the division, supposed to be great in the regular season, but how do you do against the elite teams? And are you going to be prepared to beat these teams when it counts? So, yeah, it's, it's a nut. It's after with the Knicks and obviously tomorrow is going to be, you know, obviously talking about the Knicks, but at least for tonight, get a little bit of a break. There's nothing else going on. And it should be a lot of fun to watch that game tonight at 10:10, unfortunately for the early risers, but still good.
Don Hahn
Is there anything at all like where you're watching or concern. Concern, silly. But judges back now in right field. Remember he was playing center in the World Series, if I'm not mistaken? Right. He was. He was center because he had Soto and. Right, right. So he's back in right field. Well, you remember right field in Dodger Stadium has that silly little curb.
Alan Hahn
Oh, yeah, the one that, the one that hurt the foot.
Don Hahn
The one that. Yeah, it's, it's really devastated the season.
Peter Rosenberg
They put, didn't they put something there, though, like a padding or something?
Don Hahn
How about a jackhammer? How about, how about we just do that and take the cord? Why is it there? Let it go.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah. Maybe just let the ball hit the wall just.
Don Hahn
And not try to make to fight another day.
Alan Hahn
I thought you meant Allen. I thought you meant Allen.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, no.
Alan Hahn
By the way, both be true.
Don Hahn
As a Yankee fan, you worry about everything and that's the scene of the crime.
Peter Rosenberg
No, this is, this is a bit of their bugaboo, right from what happened to Judge a few years ago. What happened to the World Series should be a lot, a lot of fun. 1-800-919-3776. Let's get back to the busy phones and let's talk to Joseph in Levittown. You're on espn, New York.
Caller (Danny)
All we are saying is give Tibbs a chance.
Peter Rosenberg
That's all I'm saying.
Caller (Danny)
Boys, let's go.
Peter Rosenberg
Bing bong.
Caller (Danny)
Bing bong. You know, I want to liken the Soto thing to the Knicks and make it more impressive for the Knicks. You know, you got to give a guy time to be in the new, on the new team. New, not the new market for him, but, but these guys, you know, Cad Mikhail, brand new team and here we are, you know, best freaking time of our lives for Knicks fans, for me as a 33 year old guy. And yeah, it's pretty, pretty, pretty cool to watch. And you know, whether we win or lose, it's been a really good ride so far.
Peter Rosenberg
So cool.
Don Hahn
You're 33. So you really. Your memory of even just getting to the finals in 99 is nothing, right? Not there.
Caller (Danny)
My earliest mix memory was playing the trails with Latrells freewell on like PlayStation 1 NBA game, turning off the fouls, scoring 80 points on the trails free. Well, that was my earliest mix, mixed memory. And now finally we're two games from the finals and it's been cool, man.
Don Hahn
That's tremendous.
Peter Rosenberg

Mets fans, get ready to roll with DP and Rothenberg for the third annual pregame party. It all happens this Thursday, June 12th. Come join Rick and Dave Live at Publicans in Manhasset from 6 to 10am for the ultimate pre game party. Then ride the train with them from Manhasset Station to Citi Field. The fun keeps going in Lot e starting at 11:30 right up the first pitch when the Mets take on the Nationals, it's all brought to you by Yingling. Traditional Lager legends stand the test of time and Tullamore do. Because when it's game time, it's Tully time. Alright, take you up until 6:30, then it's Mets baseball. We've got ENN coming up at 6. But if you're a sports fan, guys, especially this time of year, you get a little superstitious. You don't want to buck trends. You don't want to do things differently than when things are going positive. And if things are going negative, maybe you'll change things up. But Anthony Pusick's a big Knick fan and he's got a bit of a dilemma and he wants our help.
Anthony Pusick
I wouldn't say big, but I am.
Alan Hahn
This is huge.
Anthony Pusick
I am a little stitious. Not superstitious, but a little somewhat so here. So here's my dilemma, because, of course, our station has the games. Yes. Great place, from what I hear. So we get logs for every day at this station that need to be printed out before I leave the building.
Alan Hahn
We love logs.
Anthony Pusick
I love them, and that's what I do. So before Game 6, which was a Saturday for the Celtics with the Knicks up three to two, we had the Saturday logs, the Sunday logs, and the Monday logs. If there's anything that we love, especially.
Alan Hahn
After a big meal on Sunday, anything.
Anthony Pusick
We love, it's an if necessary. Right? So we always have to prepare, and we always have all these things to go. So we had Monday's schedule, and it had a Knicks log on it with all of the commercials. And I said, on the Friday night, I'm not printing this out. We don't need it. There will be no game seven. Now fast forward to today. I got all of the schedule for Saturday, Sunday, Monday printed out Saturday printed out Sunday. I stopped myself at Monday. I have the full calendar printed out for the whole day. And there's an extra attachment for a log for Game 7 of the Knicks game. My question to you guys is, do I manifest it and print out the log because I want that game to happen, or do I do what I did last time and not print it out?
Peter Rosenberg
So, yeah, because.
Alan Hahn
So last time it worked.
Anthony Pusick
What you're saying last time I said, we don't need this. We're not going to need it. But it was different. They were up three, two, right? I didn't want a game seven. Now I want a game seven.
Peter Rosenberg
So what's the vibe? Is the vibe the positivity of the Knicks winning, or are you looking at the vibe of I want the game seven?
Anthony Pusick
It's like, what did I manage?
Peter Rosenberg
You made debate you. By doing what you did, you made the game seven disappear.
Anthony Pusick
I did.
Peter Rosenberg
Even though it helped the Knicks, you made the game seven disappear. So you're afraid that if you do it again, you're gonna make the Game seven disappear. We don't want that. Or do you just look at it as if I do the same thing, it's still gonna end up positive for the Knicks. Don't even look from a Game 7 standpoint. Just do what you do.
Don Hahn
Do what I did last.
Peter Rosenberg
I say you do the same thing you did in the last series.
Anthony Pusick
No printout.
Don Hahn
Right? Like, that's. To me, I feel like everything, you know, it's the idea of, you know, put the left shoe on first and the right. Like, whatever it is that people do that are stitches, you just Stick with the pattern. So I feel like the pattern is to not do it.
Anthony Pusick
All right, Peter, you've been struggling with this one. I need your. I need your guidance on this.
Alan Hahn
I think you got to go with whatever worked. Whatever worked last time you do the same thing.
Anthony Pusick
Here's the problem. I don't know what worked. Right. Was it me manifesting that I don't need this for a Game seven or I need to put this paper in this studio?
Alan Hahn
Listen, do me a favor. Just don't mess things up, because I went to the game yesterday.
Peter Rosenberg
See, it's a problem.
Alan Hahn
You saw what happened. Now, can we get to the real issue at hand, please? Yes, please, Don, correct me if I'm wrong. Huge game Saturday night.
Peter Rosenberg
No. Yes.
Alan Hahn
Don't you think that Rick D. Pietro and Michael K should do the right thing and just do shows on Sunday to follow up a huge Nick game?
Don Hahn
It's a really big show. I mean, it's.
Alan Hahn
You know, what's the difference between being on the air on a Sunday and being on the air on a memorial Monday? They're both the weekend.
Anthony Pusick
Nobody more dialed in than Pat O' Keefe, who's going to be on from 8 to 12 on Sunday.
Alan Hahn
Well, if I'm one of those guys, I'm making a phone call and saying, I got a volunteer. Got to be in. You got to show commitment. You know what I'm saying?
Peter Rosenberg
Don, he's not going to do that. Why? Something just happened that's going to make my brain explode. Wait, something just happened? It's gonna. I'm gonna kill somebody.
Alan Hahn
Wait, wait, no, wait. What just happened?
Peter Rosenberg
I'm gonna tell you. Coming up next, it's E and M.
Alan Hahn
Wait, what the hell is going on?
Peter Rosenberg
I. I don't even. I can't. I don't even know if I could address it on here. Do you know what I'm talking about, Alan?
Don Hahn
I do.
Alan Hahn
I did it.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, my God.
Alan Hahn
What happened?
Peter Rosenberg
How rude. Spike in St. Pete. What are you doing? Get him on the phone. What are you doing?
Alan Hahn
Wait, what happened?
Peter Rosenberg
What happened? What is he talk. What did you do? Spike, what did you do?
Alan Hahn
Wait, what.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, goodbye. I'm getting, like, a message on my phone from Spike.
Alan Hahn
Okay, while I'm on the air. But what do you mean?
Peter Rosenberg
I'm not even. I'm not even sure what this is.
Don Hahn
It's.
Peter Rosenberg
It's like an instant message, but it's a call. But he's calling. He doesn't have my number.
Alan Hahn
Is he calling on, like, through IG dm?
Peter Rosenberg
Yes, yes.
Alan Hahn
And it's ringing.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Don Hahn
Did you hear it?
Alan Hahn
I didn't know what I heard.
Don Hahn
I heard it.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm sorry. I apologize to our listeners, but that was off putting.
Don Hahn
No, no, that's. That, that's, that's taking a step over the line.
Alan Hahn
Not to mention, not to mention the last text from Alan to our group chat where he really revealed some of the most important thoughts he's ever had in his life.
Don Hahn
Listen, things affect you when you're a kid. Oh, if you can relate, you can relate. If you know, you know.
Peter Rosenberg
No, I love everybody wanted to just.
Don Hahn
Make you smile but then, then that happened to Don now.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, that gets me back on track. Thank you, Alan.
Don Hahn
You're welcome.
Peter Rosenberg
I think rather have that in my mind.
Don Hahn
Woosa nn.
Peter Rosenberg
That would have been great if it happened during enn. It would make sense. It didn't quite make sense there an 880 ESPN New York and ESPN app. We're so bad.
Alan Hahn
All right, guys. I know it feels like we just talked about this, but I think it bears repeating. Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. I don't want to know how the sausage is made, but I just want to know. It's good. Here my more of Don Allen and Peter weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 880 ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers.
Release Date: May 30, 2025
Hosts: Don Hahn, Alan Hahn, Peter Rosenberg
Platform: ESPN New York
In the third hour of the Don, Hahn & Rosenberg podcast, the hosts delve deep into the current state of the New York Knicks' playoff journey and address the ongoing struggles of Mets' star Juan Soto. This episode, titled "Knicks & Soto Struggles," balances passionate sports analysis with engaging listener interactions, providing a comprehensive overview for fans eager to stay informed.
The primary focus of the discussion centers on the New York Knicks' impressive performance in the playoffs, particularly highlighting Jalen Brunson's pivotal role.
Jalen Brunson’s Stellar Performance:
Don Hahn praises Brunson’s contributions, emphasizing his ability to set the tone for the team.
"He had 32 points. He had 14 points in the first quarter... this is one of the NBA's best players." [02:51]
Alan Hahn echoes this sentiment, noting Brunson's consistent high-level play:
"He's 28 years old and establishing himself as one of the great Knicks of all time." [04:02]
Team Dynamics and Fan Base Optimism:
Peter Rosenberg highlights the unwavering optimism of Knicks fans, even in challenging moments.
"Knick Fans give a lot of credit, sometimes irritatingly so positive about what's going on." [02:13]
The hosts discuss how the Knicks have managed to maintain a positive momentum despite being down 3-1 in the series, with remarkable comebacks that bolster fan belief in the team’s potential.
Historical Context and Future Prospects:
Don Hahn draws parallels between the current series and the 1995 Knicks-Pacers showdown:
"The Pacers have only once had a team get a game seven. And that team was the Knicks in '95." [09:46]
This historical reference serves to underscore the significance of the current playoff run and the high expectations placed on the Knicks to perform under pressure.
The conversation shifts to Major League Baseball, where the hosts compare the Yankees' rematch against the Dodgers to last year's World Series and analyze the Mets' ongoing struggles.
Yankees-Dodgers Rematch:
Discussing the high-stakes matchup, Alan Hahn remarks on the historical tension and the pressure to perform:
"It's not going to make up for what happened last year, but it's still cool to get them together. Two of the best teams in baseball for sure." [25:40]
Peter Rosenberg adds a strategic perspective, assessing the Yankees' chances:
"It's too early in the season... just like the Met Series, you need juice early in the season." [32:30]
Mets’ Juan Soto Struggles:
The hosts express concern over Juan Soto's underperformance at the plate. Don Hahn remains optimistic about Soto’s turnaround:
"Every day I sit here and like you look at the numbers, he's going to get going here pretty soon." [26:12]
In contrast, Peter Rosenberg voices frustration with the ongoing struggles:
"I need to see hits. I need to see RBIs. He's not hitting with runners in scoring position." [26:33]
The discussion touches on managerial approaches and the pressure on Soto to deliver consistent offensive performances.
Listeners contribute through calls, sharing personal experiences and engaging in light-hearted banter about sports and nostalgia.
Caller Danny from Long Island:
Danny reminisces about visiting the North Carolina Video Arcade Museum, drawing a nostalgic parallel to the hosts' own experiences:
"I wandered into the North Carolina Video Arcade Museum. $8 an hour. Play every game you ever played." [17:00]
Anthony Pusick’s Superstitious Dilemma:
Anthony seeks advice on whether to print out a game seven log, reflecting on previous superstitious practices:
"Do I manifest it and print out the log because I want that game to happen, or do I do what I did last time and not print it out?" [40:16]
The hosts provide guidance, emphasizing sticking to proven patterns to influence outcomes positively.
The episode underscores the themes of resilience, leadership, and the weight of expectations in professional sports.
Leadership Under Pressure:
Jalen Brunson's ability to perform in high-stakes moments illustrates the importance of strong leadership in turning games around and inspiring teammates.
Consistency vs. Talent:
While the Knicks boast talented players, the discussion highlights that consistent performance is crucial for championship aspirations. The comparison with other NBA greats like LeBron James and Michael Jordan sets a benchmark for the current team.
Fan Passion and Psychological Impact:
The hosts acknowledge the psychological interplay between fan support and team performance, emphasizing how positive fan engagement can bolster a team’s morale.
Don Hahn, Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg provide a nuanced analysis of the Knicks' playoff run and the Mets' challenges with Juan Soto. Their blend of statistical insight, historical context, and relatable anecdotes offers listeners a comprehensive understanding of the current sports landscape in New York.
Notable Quotes Highlighted:
