Don LaGreca
Baseball is back. The Mets play host to the Reds coverage immediately following us right here on 880 at 6 30. And the Yankees are in Atlanta to take on the Braves at 7:15 Tullamore due. The original triple distilled, triple blended and triple cast mature at Irish Whiskey. Be sure to grab a Tullamore Dew or try the Tullamore Dew honey during today's action. Glasses up to enjoying Tullamore Due responsibly. You know, being a good employee like I am. Alan of course you are. I'm listening to the breaks, listening to the commercials, finding out what sponsors believe in us and who doesn't. And I heard something, I guess from today on the Michael K. Show before we jumped in to save the day like we did. In case you missed it, we did the last segment of the Kay show bullpen sesh bullpen session. And we were able to workshop some, some stuff. And Michael saying he thought the answer was clear, that the Mets have a better chance of winning their division than the Yankees do. And Michael's entitled to his opinion. I want to get yours, Allen, but clearly I, I believe in the Blue Jays. I believe in the Phillies way more than I believe in the Blue Jays. And I know the Red Sox had a 10 game winning streak. They lost today to the Cubs. But I know there are more teams in the American League east that can threaten than there are teams in the National League east that can threaten. But ultimately it's about winning your division. And I still think the Yankees are winning the east and I would have more faith in them doing it than I do the Mets. Because even though the Phillies are flawed, they're still the Phillies. They have been a perennial playoff team. When have the Blue Jays ever done anything recently? And that was I love being Canadian. I would love the Blue Jays to win the division, don't get me wrong, but when have they done anything? And the Red Sox had to win 10 straight games just to get within two or one of the Yankees. Were you surprised he said that?
Peter Rosenberg
I'm a little surprised that he said it, but I'm not entirely surprised. I mean, we had John Heyman on earlier and when we asked him who we think out of the baseball teams is closer to breaking this, you know, long drought of waiting for one of the New York teams win a championship out of the baseball teams, and he said the Mets. He looked at the Mets as a team that is a little more, I guess, balanced as a roster to get there. Now, that could change by the deadline. We'll have to see what, think what happens. And he did also reveal to us that a scout has told him that the Yankees, they're expecting the Yankees to do something big or they're preparing to do something big. So a lot of things to watch over the next couple of weeks. But, you know, again, like, when you look at it, it's not that crazy because they're a half game out and they have not really hit their strike. Like, really honestly, when did the Mets look like? Because, you know, when they were winning early, Soto wasn't really Soto. Then they're pitching. Their starting pitching was hurt. They were overcoming it with a bullpen that then had to tax and wore it out. And that's why they kind of have treaded water going into the All Star break. But now that they got their starting pitching healthy, Soto looks like he's starting to be Soto. And now, you know, at the deadline, you do expect that Stearns is going to find an arm or two for the, for the bullpen. I'll tell you what, they might be that team.
Don LaGreca
Well, I, I will, I will say this. I, I think the Mets are a better team than the Yankees. And I, and I think that's what John Heyman was saying.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
That the Mets are better and the Mets are going to be better in the second half than they were in the first half because I think it's going to hit. And they got healthy with their rotation.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
But them having an easier time to win the division is, Is a separate question. All right. They're not. Mets and Yankees are not in the same division or who's going to finish with a better record. I just, I just don't believe when it really comes, the push comes to shove and we're going to find out next week when, when the Blue Jays come to town.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah.
Don LaGreca
That the Blue Jays have the stomach to do it. And clearly I think that the Yankees are more equipped to get better at the deadline than Toronto. But Don, not the Kutcher or the Red Sox. Even though the Red Sox has done a good job beating the Yankees.
Peter Rosenberg
The Red Sox I were not expect. That's the team that I'm like. I wasn't expecting it. So I don't know if I'm buying in on them yet. Right. Okay. But when it comes to Toronto, we've been waiting for them, haven't we, to. Because that's been a team that has been sort of. They're on the rise. Just wait for this. It's been like three years that all we've been hearing about is the young talent on this team and how good it could be. Guerrero and Bichette and them boys, as Stephen A. Would say. And you've been waiting for it. And maybe this is finally the year it starts to. It starts to click. You know, that's all you're saying is just like, is this when it starts to click for them?
Don LaGreca
But, but it's still, you know, Philadelphia has been there, done that.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Don LaGreca
And Toronto hasn't and recently Boston hasn't. The Yankees are coming up, going to the World Series. So with all their flaws, I'm still going to bet. And Vegas, I think agrees with me that when it's all said and done, they're winning the East. And I can't say that about the Mets. As confident as I am in them that they're a good team, I just, as much as I hate them, I have. I have a respect for the Philadelphia Phillies. And I think they're not going to go quietly into that good night. And if you want to tell me, well, they're flawed. All these teams are flawed. The Dodgers don't look flawed because they won the World Series last year before they took two out of three from San Francisco before the break, they had lost seven straight games. Right. The Giants have been up and down. They actually haven't played great since they got Devers. As you. As you heard John Hammond say, San Diego's had injuries. Arizona has been decimated by injuries. You know, the Cubs look like they're going to run away with the Central Division, you know, so we'll see if Milwaukee, who did close out a great first half of the season, whether they're. They'll end up winning that division or not. I doubt it. But who knows? They're still right there. I just. It's going to be, it's going to Be tough. I just don't. I want to believe in them. I'm with you. I want to believe in the Blue Jays. I think it's a great story if they were able to find a way to do it. And the Rays, I know Michael talked of the Rays, they're always there, but they're not doing it, not in that ballpark, not with all the things that they've got going against them. I would not concern myself with the Tampa Bay race.
Peter Rosenberg
They're going to be on the road a ton now, the next month and a half. And you were there when Michael said. Because we were back and forth about the Major League Baseball help them by not having them play all these games at Steinburton Field, but not in a dome in July, August, the worst weather time to be in Florida. And we first thought, oh, no, no, that schedule was already out. And he said, no, they changed everything. So we do know that's why they did it. So the. The Rays are. Well, you know, they. They know already they're not going to be home a lot over the next six weeks. How much did that really impact them being on the road as much as they're going to be on the road. So I. I'm with you on that one, but I. I am not. This series next week feels like the first big, like the real test series of the season. And especially now, starting off the second half with a series like that, after what they did to you in Toronto, I do think there's a little bit of, okay, what are you guys made of? How much are you going to take this serious? And maybe they are. By the way, they're setting up their pitching for this Brave Series by the fact that they're going with Ian Hamilton with an opener here instead of moving everybody up by giving Rodin a little more time off because, okay, he pitched one inning, 18 pitches in the All Star Game. And there's. That's not high leverage. It's not pressure, but it's also, you know, did he get a break during the All Star break? No. So maybe you're just giving him that break. All right, let's give you a couple of days before you have to pitch again. Not necessarily, because, oh, that. That outing in. In Atlanta for the All Star Game was taxing, but more just mentally, physically. Let's give you a little break. Are they pushing all that and freed with the blister? Let's make sure you're right. Let's keep you out of the humidity of Atlanta and not have you pitch if it's. Even if it's close or not close, let's get you right. Because that Blue Jay series, we're looking at that saying we circled it and said here's when we get back into first place and then we stay there. That's what I'm looking at.
Don LaGreca
Yep. And they certainly can do that. Now. We have not heard, at least to best of my knowledge here at 508, from Aaron Boone on the reasoning for the opener tonight. But Carlos spoken already? Not yet. At least according to Anthony and I've been looking on Twitter. I haven't heard anything last I checked. And starting lineup, it's a 7:15 start. I don't know if the extra 10 minutes matter, but Carlos Mendoza did speak before the game against the Reds today at Citi Field. Brooks Raley's back after Tommy John, so that's going to help the bullpen. And Carlos talked about getting him back in the Mets bullpen.
Carlos Mendoza
Yeah, it's huge. You know, it's kind of. It feels like a trade deadline acquisition here. You know, we saw it last year for the first couple of months. A lot of you guys saw him the year before that. And how special is to have a guy like that that not only can get lefties out, you know, he's a guy that, with the way he's pinned the baseball, you know, you feel good about whether it's a righty or a lefty, you know, the experience guy that comes in in the middle of the inning with traffic clean in and get you three outs, you know, could be in the ninth, could be in the eighth, could be as early as the sixth. Like there's a lot of flexibility there that having a. That is important and we definitely missed it. And I'm glad that he's back.
Don LaGreca
Yeah. So that's going to be nice as far as in addition to the bullpen. And I was thinking the same thing that Carlos said it's like an acquisition.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
That they're able to add him to the team. Quickly diverting back to the Yankees, Brian Hoax said. Max Freed said his blister issue is improving. He is hopeful to be ready for the start of the Blue Jays series.
Peter Rosenberg
See, see, it does feel like they are. They're making it clear and they're not hiding it. That that's here. Look again. This is a, this is interleague play coming out of the All Star break against the Braves on the road. It's not exactly for the Yankees. All right, let's make a statement now. They want to make a statement in this series against Toronto.
Don LaGreca
All right, but you also don't want to put yourself deeper in a hole next week by not taking care of business against the Braves. I mean, you gotta live in the now at that point, but it's still kind of curious. But getting back to the Met conversation, Carlos continued about giving us updates on two of their injured players, Winker and Marte.
Carlos Mendoza
So Winker got an epidural today, so he's probably down for another seven to 10 days with no baseball activities. So, yeah, he's still ways away. Marte continues to do baseball activities, so I don't know, three to five days. He's going to run the bases. High intensity, sprinting, hitting velo machine. Like three days, four days, five days, but he's definitely progressing.
Don LaGreca
All right, that's good news from the offensive standpoint. Now more on the Yankees as things are now trickling in on Boone. Schlitler would have started tonight according to Aaron Boone, but he is dealing with discomfort near his right biceps. The Yankees sent him for an mri, which Boone said came back clean. Okay, all right. So I came back. It's these guys tell you the starting pitching situation in Major League Baseball is the, it's the, it's the white elephant in the room that. I don't know what you do about it, man. You know, and all, all these people that call up and complain, I don't trust this guy. I don't trust that guy. Never mind that. What you should be saying is we should get pitchers because I don't have any faith that these guys are going to stay upright the entire season. The kid comes up, you know, throwing 100 miles per hour. People are so impressed with him. And now technically, I guess missing a start because he would have started today, do you think? And now he's not making a start this weekend. And I guess the MRI came back clean. But you know, what's next week going to tell us?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, you know, you understand, right? Like, it's also. We're in an era where anything that bothers you, you have to report.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
They have to be cautious because, you know, in the old days, guys wouldn't say anything and then they'd have a dead arm. Right. And they wouldn't understand why an infection. Like, they want you to self report everything that bothers you and if you don't, they hold it against you. So you have to, you have to say something. So I understand it. And so a little, little, little whatever it is, it's bothering them. The. What did you say? Bicep Right. It was near his right bicep. So you have to report everything. They have to be overly cautious, especially middle of the season and especially if this is somebody that, you know. Heyman has said there's a guy that you could, if you wanted to make a big move, he could be a piece that you end up moving.
Don LaGreca
But, but, and, and Boone went on to say that they do expect him to start against Toronto. So I guess if everything. You know, so I guess it really will find out how that's going to lay out when Freed feels okay to pitch. So, hey, the MRI came back clean. He's going to make his next scheduled start, so that's all good. But let's see how he feels getting into that start and let's see how he feels after that start to see if this is also now something to keep an eye on. But you just can't keep these guys healthy. But you're right.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I bet you he's healthy. I just think they're just being cautious.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, but obviously you have to. But he's not feeling well. Something's wrong. So you now have to go find out what it is and hopefully it goes away and it doesn't come back. But it's just amazing that these guys just their availability. So that's the reason they're going with an opener.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, they're going bullpen game, actually. So it looks like Hamilton's going to give you the first inning. They're not going any bulk reliever that Boone was saying. So you'll. You might see a pitcher or two give you two innings, but I think he's going straight bullpen for this game.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, that's right out of the gate. You know, mostly an opener is not going to give you more than just a couple.
Peter Rosenberg
No, but generally it's an opener and then somebody will give you like three innings. You know, they'll do it like that, but it doesn't sound like they're going to just keep changing out arms, just the whole game.
Don LaGreca
Well, and now, you know, if you want, there's a deal on the table and the pitcher you want, you know, just, just was in an MRI tube and missed the start. Now that now the deal's not going to happen until he pitches next week and looks good and like. So these are the things that even if he's fine, still can, you know, muck up the root works here as far as trying to get a deal done before the deadline. Let's hear from you at 1-800-919-3776 Pete's in Staten Island. You're on ESPN. New York. What's up, Pete?
Caller
Hey, gents. How are you?
Don LaGreca
Good, man. Hey, Pete.
Caller
All right, so there's two trades that the Mets and Yankees are doing. Quick little substance. You got the. The rookie is going to come out of the bullpen today, and I think they're going to try him out and in the start. But getting back to the trades, arenado is back on the table and they're also talking about Sonny Gray. He's willing to imagine Wavis no trade clause, which would be exactly a big, big hit. I don't know why they would need another starting pitcher, but, you know, if you get killed back and you got him in between the two lefties. But there's a lot of, you know, Sports Centers. Sports Illustrated already brought it out. I think you'll probably hear about it this weekend.
Don LaGreca
I don't see how there's any possibility they would trade for Sonny Greg. I mean, clearly this was a not being able to handle New York situation when he was first here.
Peter Rosenberg
He's been good everywhere else, and he's.
Don LaGreca
Been good everywhere else, but that was never the question. The question is, can he handle New York? It felt like it was a little bit much for him, and now I'm going to trade for him and have him be a part of a pennant race my postseason.
Peter Rosenberg
St. Louis is.
Caller
He'll be a number four.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
It doesn't matter if he's going to start. If he couldn't handle being in New York. And Pete, thank you for the phone call. I'm not denying your interest, your rumors, but I'm just. I'm evaluating it and saying. Everybody seemed to think that Sonny Gray couldn't handle New York. It wasn't a question of his ability because he was successful before and after he was a Yankee.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, everywhere else he went, other than some injuries, he's actually. He's actually been decent. And you know, St. Louis, the Arenado thing, look, he. He's got the no traits. He can control where he goes. The. The Cardinals would move off of him and the money. But the Yankees, as far as I remember, and we talked about this and a friend of mine who's down there in St. Louis, who covers the car, and he is giving me a lot of intel on this. And he said that the Yankees were trying to get the Cardinals to eat most of the salary. You know, almost like John, Carla, Stan, and the Cardinals are saying no, that they are. They're not doing that. So if you want them, you Got to take the, you got to take.
Don LaGreca
The contract and things can change, you know. But right now the Cardinals are a game and a half out of a wild card spot.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
Now they lost six out of their last 10, but they still have a plus run differential, plus 17. And I would think in that town, you know, that they love their baseball that they're going to want to see if this team can find a way to get into the postseason. Now let's see, between there's a lot of baseball that's going to be played between now and July 31st. So if a game and a half falls to five and a half then maybe they'll do it and look like Aaron Aldo that would, would want to go to the Yankees and he is an A plus defender and he can hit. He's certainly older than the office. Not having a great year. No.
Peter Rosenberg
The offense has fallen off the last two years. The evidence is there that it's just, it's not at lemayhue level yet, but it probably. But it's get. It's kind of declining to where it's like he's not what he was. But unlike lemayu, he still is a. Like you said, a plus defender. He's still a very good defender.
Don LaGreca
Terrific. Terrific defender. And he'll hit a lot better than what you're getting right now at a third base.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, of course. And what you want to do a lot of times if you're a general manager is if you have your like like again Suarez in Arizona and Arizona is thinking the Yankees are desperate. We can really, you know, we can really hold their feet to the fire. They want this bad. If you create like the leverage of. Well, we've got this option too, you know, and you have it as a real. Alright, so we're not going to do that. We're going to do this instead. I do think that that's something that if you're, if that if you're a cashmere any smart gm, you always want to make sure that the target you really want that team knows I really want them. But I do have a better, another option that won't cost me nearly as much and I'm just fine going in that direction too.
Don LaGreca
I'm not thinking what, how many, what does he got two more years left? Three?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I think it's two.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So yeah, it's still. But it's a lot of money.
Don LaGreca
It's a lot of money.
Peter Rosenberg
He's 30, what, 6? He's, he's older. Right.
Don LaGreca
He is born in 91. So yeah, he just turned, whatever. So he's 30, 36. Yeah, nice.
Peter Rosenberg
30. 35, 34.
Don LaGreca
34 years old. But he has left on his contract. He is signed through 20, 27. So this year, next year after.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, two more years. You said 26. He signed through 27. So there's two more years, right?
Don LaGreca
Well, you got, I'm saying this contract, then two more years on top of that, right? He becomes a free agent in 28. So 275. $275 million on a nine year contract. So two years on top of this and now you're paying a guy, you know, 35, 36 years old. You know, I think the Yankees are trying to get out of the business of that. Plus you don't want to landlock, you.
Peter Rosenberg
Know, well, Lombard, so that's, that's why.
Don LaGreca
Suarez is so attractive, right? He's having a better year. He's a free agent at the end of the season.
Peter Rosenberg
Hits, bombs, let him walk and you.
Don LaGreca
Can just walk away and then you can open the door. Lombard Jr. Had a great spring that just, he just wasn't ready. But maybe by next year he will be.
Peter Rosenberg
He's 19 and you just don't want to put a 19 year old this high yet. You don't want to, you don't want to advance the cause. But he's also not your typical 19 year old because as you know, his father played and now he's coaching. He's grew up at the major league level. He's comfortable around pros because he grew up around pros. So this is not an overwhelming level for him mentally and mature wise. It's just the physically part that he's. Just make sure he's right.
Don LaGreca
And so far this year, Arenado's got a 1.3 war. He's got 10 home runs batting.246, 42 RBIs. So you know, Suarez is the much better player, younger player, bigger agent. At the end of the year, 31 home runs, it's, it's a no brainer. Again, I don't know. Suarez's defense, I know Arenado's defense is top notch, but those aren't, those aren't great numbers. Maybe he feels rejuvenated going to a different ballpark and all that, you know, but they're only a game and a half out. I don't, I don't think the Cardinals are going to give up on a chance to make the playoffs, but I don't know. We'll have to wait and see. On that 1-800-919-3776. Continue your calls. We got ENN coming up at 6 o'. Clock. It's Don, Han and Rosenberg with you here on ESPN New York.

Don LaGreca
I have. I do love. I love miniature golf. I could putt.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, you love miniature golf, do you?
Don LaGreca
But there's gonna be a guy that put the puck. Put the puck. Listen, my head's in the right place. That put the ball on the green and then allow me to put.
Peter Rosenberg
We need to get you a Happy Gilmore putter, which looks like a hockey stick, as you know, and you'll be right at home.
Don LaGreca
Are you. Are you feeling this Happy Gilmore, too?
Peter Rosenberg
I have. I have not invested in it.
Don LaGreca
Well, it hasn't happened yet. I guess.
Peter Rosenberg
The.
Don LaGreca
What is it coming out? I guess start streaming.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, No, I mean, like, you know, people get into, like, all the. The. The trailers and stuff, and I'm a big sandler guy. I did. You know, I'm good right now.
Don LaGreca
I don't. I don't mind that take. Listen, I enjoyed Happy Gilmore.
Peter Rosenberg
I thought it was great.
Don LaGreca
I like golf movies. I'm more of a Billy Madison fan than a Happy Gilmore, so I'm kind of curious, but I'm not. I'm not gonna rush to Netflix on the 25th and watch it. I might. I might watch it at some point. I'm not good, like you said. But I'm not rushing to.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm not invested. I guess I'm Scotty Scheffler, you know, it's like, he's not gonna. It's not doing anything for me. You know, if I have to watch it, I'll watch it.
Don LaGreca
Well, you're never gonna have to watch it.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, you never know.
Don LaGreca
The only way you're gonna have to watch it if it ends up being just unreal and everybody talking about of the conversation.
Peter Rosenberg
You mean like Love Island?
Don LaGreca
I haven't watched Love Island. Will not.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, the winner is. She graduated from liu.
Don LaGreca
Don't care.
Peter Rosenberg
You're welcome.
Don LaGreca
She could have graduated from Ramapo with me. I wouldn't watch it.
Peter Rosenberg
You would have walked. She would have walked with you. You would have followed her up to get your diploma and you still wouldn't watch it.
Don LaGreca
Why would I watch Love Island? My time is so limited. Honestly, if we're friends. Right. And you know me at all.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
And I were to walk into the station and say, you know what I did last night? I watched Love Island. I want to get punched right in.
Peter Rosenberg
The forehead, right in the face and.
Don LaGreca
Just say, like, what's happening?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, I first have you. I definitely would check on you, like your. Your mental state.
Don LaGreca
Stupid.
Peter Rosenberg
Make sure you're good.
Don LaGreca
The Bachelorette.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. No, it's not for me, but it's the kids. They're loving this. This is the younger generation, the 20 somethings. And apparently it's the guys who are watching it from what I understand through my son.
Don LaGreca
Right. Are abusing themselves.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, no, no. It's different guys.
Don LaGreca
Okay?
Peter Rosenberg
It's because the girlfriends are so into it and talk about it so much. They're now it's almost like the tractor beam. You're still. You're drawn into it. You have to watch it. Now. I got caught up in something like this with Stephanie way back in the day. There was Jessica Simpson. Was. Was in. It was a reality show that she did with Nick Lachey.
Don LaGreca
Oh, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And you know, people thought I. There was a time where people thought I was. I looked like Nick Lachey. All right, so that was a thing always on the.
Don LaGreca
On the heavier. That heavy. But like, he was a thicker.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you.
Don LaGreca
Looking guy. Why do people think you look like him?
Peter Rosenberg
You remember now there was a time I was a lot thicker.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, that is true.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, I was a heavy sports writer. I was. I'll send out the pic. I'm not ashamed. I was pushing 240, 250. But anyways, so she watched. She loved watching it because, you know, again, she's the cute little blonde. So that's your Jessica Simpson. And so I'm like, all right, what are you into? So we started watching it together and I Got caught up in it to a point where I was actually, like, debating and talking to her about it, and I'm like, how did this just happen? But it does. So I get it, but it's not for you and me.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, it's not.
Peter Rosenberg
Not our thing.
Don LaGreca
But, you know, Nancy has good television taste.
Peter Rosenberg
That's. That's helpful.
Don LaGreca
So that does help. And the only thing I want, like, the only thing in the summertime, I'll get, like, the Quiz with Balls. I'll watch.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, because it's got Jay Farrow. He's funny. And it's kind of. The kids like it. And it's a trivia thing.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, but that's different. That's. Your mind is stimulated.
Don LaGreca
I'm not the reality stuff.
Peter Rosenberg
The reality show stuff is. It's not stimulated. It does nothing for your brain. All it is is just eye candy.
Don LaGreca
But there was one that Nancy was watching because when Declan was over last summer, he kind of got into it. What was the one where you had to guess the family, like, who. Who the person, the celebrity the person was related to.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah, I know the one you're talking about. It's.
Don LaGreca
I think it was on abc.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
And so I'm watching it, and I'm like, how do they not know it's Donny Osmond's kid? It looks just like him. And then Nancy's like, none of these people know what Donny Osmond looks like.
Peter Rosenberg
Exactly. They have no idea.
Don LaGreca
I'm like, well, they're never gonna forgive it. Figure out who it is. And they never. They didn't. I don't think they did claim to fame. That's what it was.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. That was kind of interesting.
Don LaGreca
Clues and stuff.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. It was an interesting concept, by the way, to put a wrap on the. The CEO and the. The HR executives who were fought. Right. I think. Do you know now that there's a. There's a new word now in our. In our lexicon, if you've been coldplayed, that means you've been caught cheating in a public space.
Don LaGreca
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
So if you ever need to reference that. Don, now you know what to use on our Coldplay. Oh, they were Coldplayed. Yeah. It's like they're getting a lot of.
Don LaGreca
Attention, but it's been a while since they've gotten that kind of.
Peter Rosenberg
Exactly. Yeah.
Don LaGreca
God, it's weird what gains traction. Right?
Peter Rosenberg
Like, it's unreal because I don't know.
Don LaGreca
Who this guy is.
Peter Rosenberg
Do you think that they'll get their sit down on Dateline or one of these shows, right? They're. They're going to get their sit down.
Don LaGreca
Especially in the summer. They're going to need it.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, they're going to.
Don LaGreca
Why you would be remotely interested.
Peter Rosenberg
They're both placed on leave, which is interesting because she runs HR and he's a CEO of the company. Who placed them on leave. Exactly.
Don LaGreca
You know, that's a good question.
Peter Rosenberg
But that's what happened.
Don LaGreca
I guess. I guess that's what you do to say that you're doing something.
Peter Rosenberg
Shouldn't they have just deadpanned it? Oh, no, don't react at all. Because then the video wouldn't have even gone viral. No, it was their reaction, their shock. And then the woman behind them, she. She's the one that gave it away because there's a woman behind them that. Her reaction, which is that. That blank eating grin, like she knows, you know, she had the office cool.
Carlos Mendoza
That it was gonna happen on the Coldplay concert.
Peter Rosenberg
Like, she's like, oh, they got busted. And she almost seemed to enjoy it. She's the one that knows the whole story. But this. Somebody's got to get to her.
Don LaGreca
Well, but, but the thing is, they weren't the only people in the suite, right?
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, it was a whole. Yeah, but come on. They were so literally hugging.
Don LaGreca
It was so obviously this was something that he didn't want the general public to know, but he wasn't exactly hiding it.
Peter Rosenberg
No, his co workers knew this was going on, so.
Don LaGreca
So screw him. I mean, really, honestly, what do you expect? Like you were keeping it a secret. Like, this isn't like, you know, what was like, you know, at the, at the, at Rogers center. There's the hotels there and like a.
Peter Rosenberg
Drape that used to be the Renaissance. I actually stayed there during a baseball. It was great. Yeah, Pretty cool.
Don LaGreca
But like, if, if it was accidentally found out, like you were in a public place, you were with people the people knew within the company. Yeah, you're in a suite full of that you're acting that way in front of. You're just mad that the whole world found out, but you didn't care who that most people knew.
Peter Rosenberg
So it's the problem of what, 60, what was it, 40,000 people at Boston? Right, that was, that was, that was at the TD Garden. Well, wherever it was, there was still 20,000 people were there or more.
Don LaGreca
But Alan, if I'm cheating on Nancy, where the, where the company knows it and I take her to a Nick game in the suite, right? And everybody in the suite knows that's not my wife.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, that.
Don LaGreca
That's not Nancy. Dawn knows. Everybody's in there knows. Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Having a moment.
Don LaGreca
So I'm gonna get upset when I end up on the jumbotron and a bunch of strangers find out.
Peter Rosenberg
It's a fair point. Yeah, it's not. It's almost like you want to get caught. You want to get. You're hiding in plain sight. You want to get caught.
Don LaGreca
I usually think that when something happens to this extent, they were probably behind.
Peter Rosenberg
So are you calling fraud? Should we bring this to the court?
Don LaGreca
You know what? That's a good way. I got the right hand.
Peter Rosenberg
Should we bring this to the court? Is this whole outrage fraud?
Don LaGreca
I think this all played out exactly how they wanted it to play out. Lot of attention.
Peter Rosenberg
And the company that you never heard of, now everybody knows about. What is it? Astronomer. Astronomer. Whatever it is. Yeah, that's the company.
Don LaGreca
Listen. And he wasn't afraid for people. You think a suite full of people are going to keep their mouth shut? Like. So it was gonna get out. I wouldn't be surprised if his significant other knew that this was going on.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Just don't embarrass me. Well, you just got embarrassed.
Don LaGreca
You got embarrassed. But you know what? At the end of the day, she's gonna get her 15 minutes out of it, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
And everybody's gonna get it when it's gonna be forgotten about soon enough. And they put themselves on lead. They get a paid vacation for it. It's all. We're all getting played. We're all getting.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, you're getting Coldplayed. And by the way, you know what?
Don LaGreca
I think Coldplay was on.
Peter Rosenberg
They got Coldplay.
Don LaGreca
Listen, we need something here. I haven't had eight in 20 years.
Peter Rosenberg
They have a song called Trouble, by the way, which is. Sounds the song, if you look at the lyrics, sounds a lot like, I got caught and I'm sorry. So it's. You know, it does feel really connected. But anyways, that's what's going on in our world right now.
Don LaGreca
It's going on, and I'm trying.
Peter Rosenberg
Why? We need sports. Yeah, we need sports badly.
Don LaGreca
I tell you, sports just seems really, like, sophisticated compared to what's happening around.
Peter Rosenberg
The rest of the things that. Right, the things that get social media popping.
Don LaGreca
Well, let's go to Bobby in Queens. You're on espn, New York. What's up, man?
Caller
Hey. Hi, guys. Thank you so much for taking my call, man. What I wanted to say was the perfect acquisition is Guarez. And if Arizona thinks that they're going to heist teams. They're out of their mind because first of all, you don't give up a lot for a player for 60 days because that's really what it comes down to. Second of all, you know, I'm not sure you. You guys realized it. You know, nobody's perfect. But Galleon has been batting practice this year. He's got an ERA way close to six.
Peter Rosenberg
He's been good lately. If you, if you've seen some of his starts lately. He's had some big strikeout games. And you know, the Yankees love the high strikeout.
Caller
Like the funny thing about. Yeah, but the funny thing about it is there's two great starts this year against the Mets and Yankees.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay, well, early in the season, yes, especially what he did to the Yankees. But I'm talking about more recently, like before the All Star break. He had a couple of. I think it was the Giants. He might have had like a 10 strike. He had a big strikeout performance recently.
Don LaGreca
In 115 innings, he's got 110 strikeouts. So he's averaging pretty much a strikeout and inning. He gives you innings. He's made 20 starts already this year.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
So. Yeah, but I'm with you. It's a five.
Peter Rosenberg
ERA is 440. The RA is 540. 49.
Don LaGreca
It's not good. But he's also on a. On a team that's not good. Listen.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I'm right. He had 10 strikeouts against the Giants July 1. And then he actually had. Against Arizona. I know. I mean, I'm sorry. Against the Padres, he had nine strikeouts. So he had a couple of really good starts. How many runs did he give up in those games? Two and one. Now, the Angels, his last start before the All Star break was not good. He gave up a ton of runs and a ton of hits against.
Caller
So do you want. So if you're the Yankees, you're going to give up a prospect for a guy. You don't know what you're getting?
Don LaGreca
Well, I don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
He's not somebody you're giving up on, Bobby.
Don LaGreca
Here's how you're looking at it. Kind of the wrong way. You don't know what you're giving up for. So if it's a prospect that they feel like they can afford to give up, it might be worth the shot. He's been good for his career. He's having a bad season on a bad team.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, they're a bad team. Yeah.
Don LaGreca
But maybe a change of scenery. He's a big strikeout guy, he makes every start, he's probably going to be right up there in innings pitched. These are the things that general managers love to see and they're looking beyond the pedestrian numbers. We look at. They don't care that he's 7 and 10. They probably don't care he's got a 5.40 earn run average. They see the strikeouts, they see the innings. And if you got. And you can give up somebody that you think is expendable, that's why I never understood, I don't want that guy. I don't want to. You're not going to willing to give up anybody for him. Yeah, listen, if you, if you, if you give up Jones, if you give up Lombard Jr then I can understand you being upset, but can I see what the package is before I flip out and say I don't want the guy?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. He's given his. His real weakness has been the home run ball. He's. He's given up 21 home runs already. That's a, that's a ridiculous number for halfway through the season.
Don LaGreca
Right. But, you know, but the strikeouts, maybe they look at that as being more important.
Peter Rosenberg
Maybe, maybe they think we'll get them right, like there's something we see, maybe.
Don LaGreca
We can fix it, you know, and again, maybe they're not even interested at all. I don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
But he was an all star two years ago. That's all I know.
Don LaGreca
But I think they love the innings, they love the strikeouts. Those are things that really are eye popping. The general managers.
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, guys, it's Ceedee Lamb, wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys. I'm partnering with Abercrombie this season to tell you all about their viral denim. All you need to know is denim should fit like this. My jeans need to check a lot of boxes fit first, trend second. They need to go with whatever I'm feeling. Peter Rosenberg
More sweat and raise your game. Gatorade, is it you?
Don LaGreca
The McDonald's snack wrap is back. You brought it back. Ranch snack wrap, Spicy snack wrap. You broke the Internet for a snack? Snack wrap is back.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks for listening to the Don Han and Rosenberg podcast.
Don LaGreca
I didn't listen to anything you just said.

Peter Rosenberg

Honey, during today's action, glasses up to enjoying Tullamore Dew responsibly. Was that the song you were talking about?
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Don LaGreca
No. There you go.
Peter Rosenberg
That's not Trouble. Trouble's a little slower and drippier. But that's a good. That's a good cold place on them.
Don LaGreca
I always get Coldplay. And what was it? Snow Patrol.
Peter Rosenberg
Snow Patrol.
Don LaGreca
What's it. What's the. Not Snow Patrol. That's a movie, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Who you think of?
Don LaGreca
I don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know. Come on, come on. Because I think I know what you mean. It's something patrol, though.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, but. Yeah, help me out. Jacob or Anthony or something. Somebody. Yeah, forget what it does. Somebody on social media will tell me.
Peter Rosenberg
But I think you're right. It might be Snow Patrol. Yeah, there was a. There was a band called Snow Patrol. Okay, sorry, what did they say?
Carlos Mendoza
Chasing Cars.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Don LaGreca
I like that.
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, how do you like chasing cars? We got there Chasing cars.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, because it was in. And listen, I don't watch the show, but I stumbled upon it. I think it was. What's that hospital show that's been on forever on abc?
Peter Rosenberg
General Hospital.
Don LaGreca
No, Grey's Anatomy. Grey's Anatomy.
Peter Rosenberg
She's gone. They're still Anatomy.
Don LaGreca
It's a lot.
Peter Rosenberg
They're still really. Gray's not there anymore. But is she. I don't even know.
Don LaGreca
I don't watch. Is there a Gray?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Meredith, wasn't that not Morocco? It's Gray. The main character.
Don LaGreca
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Or one.
Don LaGreca
I. I never watched the show once, but it's been on for like 20 years.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Don LaGreca
It must be pretty good.
Peter Rosenberg
And they were on it.
Don LaGreca
But they did. They used the song. Somebody died on the show.
Peter Rosenberg
A lot of people died.
Don LaGreca
I. But I think it was a main. I don't know. I. I just stumbled upon the song. I liked it. And apparently the video for the song had a lot of scenes from Grey's and Addams. Me. It's a good song. Listen to it. Al, what do you think oh, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I heard this.
Carlos Mendoza
It's in a lot of stuff.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, yeah. If I just lay here. Yeah, yeah, that whole thing.
Don LaGreca
Listen, I know it's not great, but like I said about Biodome, sometimes there's.
Peter Rosenberg
Songs you like that it's definitely very drippy.
Don LaGreca
It just. Yeah, it's. It just hits you and just. It got me. Let's go. Let's go to Adam in California's got something interesting. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, man?
Caller
My guys, thank you so much for taking the call.
Peter Rosenberg
Attaways.
Caller
So before I get to the baseball of it at all, I just wanted to clarify something with Alan that he mentioned before about that Janet Jackson album. Correct me if I'm wrong. Wasn't it on the COVID of the Rolling Stone magazine that had the picture of her and someone else holding her chesticles or what?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, yeah.
Caller
Because on the original album, wasn't it just like a headshot of her with her arms over her head?
Don LaGreca
Oh, no.
Peter Rosenberg
But I thought there were hands.
Caller
It was on Rolling Stone.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, I. I don't think that was the album cover. I think that was the COVID of Rolling Stone because they. But I think the COVID of the album was not just her.
Caller
I think it's just a headshot.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, listen, could it been inside the jacket? It could have been also. I swear I looked it up earlier.
Caller
It was definitely on the Rolling Stone magazine covering Stone.
Peter Rosenberg
All right.
Caller
Yeah. All right. So, yeah, I was originally calling about, you know, basically all the holes and the problems that the Yankees have. I'm getting the most anxiety from your callers and the other Yankees fans. They're driving me nuts, driving me up a wall. They're acting like the sky is falling the second. The unofficial second half of the season hasn't started yet, and they're just blowing.
Don LaGreca
Their top over it.
Caller
But if you. If I can. I did have something that. In that John Hammond interview that kind of triggered me. He meant when you brought up the possibility of baseball implementing the swing off in the regular season. He seemed kind of taken aback, and that kind of confirms my hesitant about the whole thing. I mean, are we getting a little crazy with the whole swing off in the regular season? I know it's talk radio. You got to talk, and it's all fun.
Peter Rosenberg
We were just.
Caller
What are we. Are we getting into bullpen coyote territory with this stuff?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, I think we were. We were creating this thought of how could it work? And it was, to be honest, Adam, to take you behind the curtain, what Don and I were doing to start that show that day was just throwing it out there. Like, you know, it was entertaining. Caught my attention. We'll never see it. Nobody really want. And then calls came in from people trying to justify how it could work. And what did that, Don, that took us what, an hour or two?
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Where we talked about it and it wasn't like we were pushing it. It was the fact that everyone else was sort of in the same place of, you know, it was interesting. How could it work? And that's all.
Don LaGreca
And all. All I'm saying to you is the reason. As we started to talk it through, two things jumped to my mind. One, if I were to tell you five years ago that we would settle extra innings by putting a ghost runner at second base, you would be like, that would never do that. How are we going to figure out earner and average run scored? They did it. So it tells you that anything is possible. And the CBA is up at the end of next year. And if the players want it and they fight for it and the owners think, hey, if we can get something out of them that we wouldn't get otherwise to give them this, then there's the. There's the opening for it to happen. I don't think it will. I would bet against it happening, but if the players want it. And is it any. Any crazier than the ghost runner? And then Alan brought up a great point. Well, you don't do it after 10, after 11, but maybe after 12 innings or it's already after midnight and you want to get everybody out of there, especially places like, like Washington D.C. that's not the greatest of areas. And they down the trains at like 11:30. And right. It, it opens up a door to where, hey, maybe.
Peter Rosenberg
Yep.
Don LaGreca
It seems a little bit more feasible than it did when we first started the show.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, that's, that's, that's what we did. And it was really a reaction. Again, this is all a part of the listener experience is that they were, they were telling us that they wanted to talk more about it and that's why. That's why we did it. All right, let me, Let me just now put a bow on the Janet Jackson thing because I knew I was right. So the Rolling Stone cover is the full version of the album that was in cut up. The COVID of the album just showed her face with the hands above her head. And then throughout the album, it was the next pieces of it. They didn't do the whole thing. Rolling Stone. It was the original photo without moving like, you know, when you open up the album, it was like the, like her, the rest of her body was sort of on other parts of it, so. And the hands, by the way, was the boyfriend at the time, Renee Elizondo.
Don LaGreca
Interesting. Listen, this is what we do on this show.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, we just have to make.
Don LaGreca
Sure that we open doors, we kick them down sometimes, and we remind you.
Peter Rosenberg
Of the glory that was the 90s that I know Anthony just loves to talk about. He hates that it's his favorite topic. Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. I don't want to know how the sausage is made, man. I just want to know. It's good. Here, more of Don Allen and Peter Weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers.
Don LaGreca
You've seen the headlines, heard the debates.
Peter Rosenberg
Some say the three point ball has created a monotonous rhythm to the game.
Don LaGreca
Has the three pointer ruined basketball? And how did we get here? The rise of the three point shot can be partially traced to an eccentric Kansas genius named Mark Manley, whose story didn't turn out quite the way he imagined.
Peter Rosenberg
I decided I wanted to have one of the most organized goodbyes in history and I think I will be successful.
