A
In the pocket baby. In the pocket.
B
A loss. So we just have two picks each. So it should go pretty quick, pretty painless. Get back to your calls. A lot of people still want to talk about the fraud of it all. Got Tess on hold. I know Peter's excited about that, but we just wanted to just touch on quick. The baseball, just a real interesting night. You know, president in judge hits two home runs. Yankees beat up on the Tigers. So now they set things up against the Red Sox here. And baseball always has these moments. Usually it's kind of a Met thing, you know, grimace and or something that kind of gets everything going in. The Yankees a couple of years ago had the, the turtle like there's always something because it's a long black cat.
A
Right when that isn't it. That's 69. The black cat.
B
69 with the black cat that was in front of Leo Durocher.
A
Leo derocher.
B
Right. So could this be one of those moments? And I'm not going to get political, but it was a big deal and it certainly, you know, the Yankees were really into it and Judge hit two home runs and met the President before the game and all that. Like it just, just seemed like it was a moment. The Yankees played their best baseball since, you know, the series before. So is that something that can kind of get them going against the Red Sox? And Toronto won as well yesterday. So it's getting late, early. We're down to the last, what, 15 games here. But you know, you wanted to get to 8 and 4. In order to do that in the gauntlet, they're going to have to sweep in Boston. So how you feeling about the Yankees going to Fenway this weekend?
A
They got a sweep. Wow, that's like I'm standing On that business, they've got to go up there. And so you got to set, you got to those. The bullpen was so bad against Detroit, the starting pitching was fine. The bullpen was God awful against Detroit for two games. And then you had the opportunity of going up against an opener and you know, you opened up a can against that, the opener. And the way they approached that game, the Tigers did, and you did what you're supposed to at least salvage one game out of that series. But I still think, and I don't actually believe you're the one that said it, that this stretch of games, which now is down to 12 games left out of that 12 stretch of, I mean, three games left after that stretch of 12 games. Like you're the one that said the only thing that's going to matter is what you do against Toronto and the Red Sox. Well, two out of three against Toronto and now you have a chance to send a message against Boston and still put your, put yourself in position with the last 13 against bad teams to still have a chance to win the division and still have a chance to have the top seed in the American League. Those are still, believe it or not, on the table. So I feel like after what you've experienced against this Red Sox team that you have to go up there and you've got to win all three games, no less than two, but you got to take all three. Hard to do when you consider what they're pitching, what they're gonna be throwing up against you pitching wise with bayo crochet like that, you're, you're going up against their best. And the last time you face those guys, they owned you.
B
You got heel freed and worn in the three games this weekend. Now that you could distance yourself in the Red Sox to solidify home field for the wild card. Now as far as the division is concerned, that still would be alive if you're able to, you know, sweep the Red Sox. But you're right now three back, it's four because Toronto's got the tiebreaker, Toronto's hosting Baltimore. So you're probably going to, if you, if you expect to gain any ground this weekend, you're probably gonna have to sweep Boston and, and hope Toronto loses a game and you can at least get it down to two going into the final couple of weeks of the season. Quickly, before going back to the phone calls, it just the Mets didn't get killed, but it felt like they did. They score four runs in the top of the first inning. You're thinking, okay, Got Peterson on the mount. This, we're going to get this done here. We're going to finally get a win. And they didn't do anything the rest of the game. 23 consecutive batters were retired after they scored those four runs in the first inning. And they end up losing the game. 64 bullpen implodes again and they get swept. And now they've got a game and a half lead on the Reds and the Giants.
A
It's getting tenuous.
B
Now. The Giants, they've got seven games left for the Dodgers, including three this weekend. But the Reds, you just lost two out of three two. And they have the tiebreaker. Guys, they're going to be in Sacramento taking on the ace. So the Mets are going to be taking on Texas. They're in free fall. It doesn't matter to me at this point, like, they're not going anywhere. All right, I don't want to hear. Well, maybe they can get. No, this, this is a complete free fall.
A
So you're ready to. You're pulling the plug. You're ready to give up?
C
Well, why should he? The other. The only thing you'd be hanging on to if you're a Mets fan is you should basically view your season like any crappy team that if they get to the dance, a miracle happens. But to think about them as if they were the team of earlier in the season. Alan, you're the one who brought the stat the other day. They are the fourth worst team in baseball over the last several months. So you got to think of them that way. Now, Don, he's still going to be dialed in for the playoff games. If somehow they win a. Win a series, all of a sudden, okay, let's, let's talk about it. But how excited could you possibly be?
A
No, you can't. Anticipation wise, you can't possibly have it. That is sucked away. And I'll tell you what, when you look at the faces of the players, you can really feel it slipping away, right? Like, you can really feel that idea of the belief and whatever it is, there's something that does happen in a clubhouse, in a locker room that when a team goes through the stretch that they've gone through, this is a half a season of bad baseball where you are one of the worst teams in the sport for a half season of games eventually, like, you are what your record says you are eventually the room knows it. And they're just hoping, like maybe to catch lightning in a bottle, but they kind of probably are starting to feel it too. Like, yeah, we're not that. We're not that team. The true belief in the room, which is the last thing to go. Fans will turn on. A media turns on them. The last thing to go is the room. And it almost feels like from what you're looking at, body language, even they know it.
B
How can they not know it? When you see, like you said, when you play that poorly over half a season, you're one of the worst teams in baseball. That becomes who you are.
A
Yeah.
B
And you go into Citizens bank against the divisional rival with some semblance of hope that you might be able to get a little closer to the division. And now you're what, 11 and 12 out. That ship sailed. You've got the Reds and the Giants crawling up your back. If you happen to make it, it'll just because of the fact that the Giants and the Reds couldn't take advantage of it. And Peter's right. If all. If your only hope is anything can happen. A miracle. That's not what this season was supposed to be about. That's not why you got Juan Soto. All right? That was not trying to build off of being two wins away from going to the World Series. Now, that tells me that last year was kind of fluky. Got off to the slow start and then you got hot. And that hot carried over to the first half of this season. And now you look a lot like the team that began the 2024 season and over two full 162 game seasons. What does it say? Your average? You're five games above.500. That's what you are. 146 games into the season. That is what you are. But baseball changed the rules. They now allow average teams to make the playoffs so they still can get in there. And you got to be in it to win it. But just like the Giants winning in Dallas, if all you got for me is, well, they're due well. Or miracles happen, Don.
A
That's all I got.
B
That's that. I'm not killing. I'm just saying that that's.
A
You're right.
B
That's where we're at right now. And it's. It's not. It's not good. And it's absolutely. So we'll see what happens against the Texas Rangers. But that. That's what's happening with the baseball. And we'll say yankees good, Mets bad.
A
Yeah. And. And I know we want to get to calls, but can I just. Little Maya Copa on the Volpe stuff.
B
Yes, I wanted to get to that, too.
A
I'm sorry about that that's, you know, because there's a lot more information that has come my way and also just from talking to some people like that are covering it because you know, again, you, you just get like this sense like something's not right. And everything that came out yesterday about the torn labrum and the fact that it tore a little more and then they're going to want cortisone shot. And you start just like I just was like this. I'm not right about this. And I, I can't help it. You do fall back to this. If I was on the beat, I'd start picking at this scab. Because you're just like this is this. This doesn't seem right. And what Boone is doing, it feels like he's covering for something. And at first you assume like the Yankees are just mishandling this another injury that they just are mishandling. And it just seems like it can't know. It can't be that. And so from what, from what I think this is all other reporters. This is not like I'm investigating anything, but I've just talked to other. This feel this has become more of a Volpe. Volpe and his. They don't want that out. They didn't want it out all year that the shoulder was, was bothering him. He wanted to play. They didn't want any excuses. He didn't want to come out of the lineup. And I guess to the Yankees fault they went along with it and therefore it's not all right. Well, he's not playing well. It has nothing to do with the injury because he says he can play and he wants to play. Now there comes a point, like I've said, I feel like you eventually have to save the player from himself. I don't care whether with his agent or his family want. In this case, it's looking bad for us and we need to do something about it. But now as the Yankees have reached that point in overturn where it's like, look, we keep giving him chances. Now the thing's hurting him again. He wants another shot. We got to take another mri. Look, it's showing. It's torn even more. We've got an option. We're going to play instead of him. Now it's. Let's, let's now use. Let's put it out there that there's an injury so that it covers up for how bad of a season he has had. This is really now starting to sound like a player who was very sensitive to the criticism. And I hate to say it because it's a guy who's from the area, grew up a Yankees fan. It's almost like maybe this place isn't the best thing for him. And the Yankees might be coming to that point where maybe they know, okay, this isn't for him. He can't handle this. He hears every boo, he gets down on himself. He mentally has completely fallen apart. And I've wanted to blame the Yankees for this, but it does happen in sports where representation gets in the way. And. And they want it to be like, he's a fighter, he's a gamer. He's playing through it because he wants to be there for his team. And then when it doesn't work out for him, it's, well, you know, he's been playing hurt all this time, and I don't like that. That's not a good look. These might be the last days of.
B
Anthony Volpe with the Yankees, and that would be the logical thing to do. But the problem that they're going to run into, and the reason I think they're so stubborn about playing him, is they invested so much. And when I say invested a lot, the guys, they didn't go out and get in free agency or trades while they were waiting for Volpe to come up. They didn't want to landlock him. Yeah. You know, whether it was Seager, whether it was story, like, no, you're waiting for this guy, and if he ends up becoming something someplace else, everybody's going to have egg on their face. But at the same time, you've got a con, you've got a shortstop that's under contract into next year that you could play, and if he's not feeling it, man, it's not going to work. It's too important a position to just have that kind of hitting and that kind of fielding and that kind of a problem, and already an injury. So.
A
But you might have to find it. But think about it, like, so. So going into next year, if as an organization, you just come to the realization, like, you know what? Like, they might want to move on from Volpe. They might feel like it's not fixable. He's too emotional. He's too caught up in, like, the market might be too tough on him. He can't handle, like, even a little bit of criticism. He really crumbles. Like, he doesn't need to talk to the media anymore. He's always like, he's out the back door now. Like, it's. It's. Instead of being accountable, there's a Lot of things that. That are concerning that. That these guys are finding out. And if that's the case, I mean, that's. Dom, we're not talking about. You just pull somebody off the scrap heap.
B
That's.
A
That's a premier position.
B
No, it is, but it's also somebody. But you can't afford to have somebody that's not getting the job done, not continue to be there.
A
So, no. Yeah.
B
So, no. It's a tough situation. 1-800-919-3776. Stu is in Flushing. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Stu?
D
Hey, guys. How you doing?
B
Good.
A
What's up, Stu?
D
Thanks. So I have a caveat. First. So what I'm about to say, I mean no disrespect to the court or your honor. Fair.
B
All right. Well, so let me hear.
C
All right, let's see.
A
Okay.
D
I know you want to hear it first. So over the recent weeks, I've noticed that every now and then you have. This is. Spew. Done that. You have callers who profess their allegiance to the Rangers. But they say to you, you know, congratulations on your new job. Don't get me wrong. But they say to you, oh, you know what? Because of you, I'm going to listen to a couple of Devil's games, yada, yada. And so to me, you're an enabler. Yeah. Wow. Like, if there was an Al Anon meeting for this.
B
Oh, my God.
A
That's an accusation.
B
No, no, they didn't say.
D
No, no, no, no.
A
Like he's saying, you're such a violent. Okay.
D
It's an unwitting. It's an unwittingly. It's an unwitting enablation.
A
Right, right. I get it. I get it.
B
I don't get it at all. Because it didn't. They didn't. They don't say, I'm going to be rooting for the Devils. They say they'll be watching some games. What's wrong with that? But as a Ranger fan, you can't watch other games.
D
No, no, I watched. I watched Devil. Listen, man, I'm 68 years old. My first game was Dave Ballon, okay? So the thing is that either. If you're a Ranger fan, man, you watch the Devil, you know, when they play the Rangers, but you don't watch Devil's games.
B
What I.
C
This is.
B
Thank you.
A
I think. What? Stu, I think.
C
I think I speak for all of us when I say thank you for the call.
A
No, no, think about it. How many Ranger fans will put on The Devil broadcast, just to hear Don, out of curiosity.
B
Well, my tons.
A
That's, that's an interest. But that's. You're. You're kind of pulling. You're taking people with you, which for the Devils and the Devil's broadcast is a huge win.
B
But that, that's fine, but it's.
A
These people have some fans conflicted. They love you.
C
No, but hold on, hold on. But Don, real quick, let me ask a question for you. Help me, Let me jump in here. In the heart of my Celtics fandom, you're telling me that when I see tonight the Kings are playing the Lakers. And I go, oh, I can't wait. I'm definitely watching that game. I want to see what Kobe does against the Kings. And that somehow is being a bad Celtics fan. You can't have interest in watching other teams play games.
A
Just to be clear, the premise is ridiculous. I'm more. It's, it's. I'm. What I'm. I'm trying to jump off it, make sense of something out of it.
C
You're trying.
A
I've never considered this, but I'm curious to see how many Ranger fans who have listened to Don all over the years when the Rangers play the Devils. You know, this is a dual broadcast on MSG. They have one on MSG, the other one on MSG 2. And how many will be like, let me hear Don call. Let me hear Don's call.
B
Well, then if that's the case, I'm a fraud. Because most of the time Mets and Yankees played, I watched it on. Yes. Because of Michael. Michael's my guy. I don't know Gary personally. I know Michael personally.
A
Yeah, no, no, I, I.
B
So I'd watch it.
A
What a win for the Devils. Another reason why it made sense to.
B
Hire you, but it's not enabling. Because if they said, oh, I'm going to become a Devil fan now, then they, I would call them a fraud.
A
Premise was silly. Now here's what I think of something else.
B
That's all I was on. I told you. I was on Dave Rotherberg's podcast.
A
Oh, that's a second plug, Peter. That's two.
B
And I. He said, he'll be, he'll be watching. He goes, I'm still going to be rooting against the Devils. And I'm still, I'm still a Ranger fan. But he goes, when the Devils play, I. I'll. I'll be watching. And I asked him, I said, what would you do? I said, would you root for the Devils? Would you root for Me, if the Devils needed a win at the end of the season to get into the playoffs and the Rangers were already eliminated from playoff contention, would you root for the Devils to get in for me? And he said, I'd get back to you, so. He still couldn't even give me that.
A
Listen, I respect Pocket.
B
I respect Pocket.
C
I got no issue with that. I mean, it's. He had a good year. Don, no one needs to root for anything more. You got the job. That's enough.
A
No, no, no, no, no, no. You understand playoffs means extra bucks in your pocket.
C
Well, yeah, sure, but that's like that. That's, you know, get the first round.
B
So.
C
And where do you. Where do you. Where do you draw the line? Don goes, hey, by the way, you know, I. I bet against the Giants next weekend. Can you root for me? I want to win a few bucks. I mean, that's not. Dave's concerned is Don's financials.
B
But.
C
But the idea that you can't watch another local team, in fact, that was weird.
B
I mean, I went. Growing up a Devil Van. I watched Rangers, I watched Don's. I love hockey.
C
Yeah. I never. I don't understand that logic at all.
B
But I. I guess what he's saying, I don't know what would be the comp. I. I guess you brought up Lakers. That's the team, I guess, that you hate the most as a Celtic fan.
C
Well, you're supposed to. Supposed to.
A
It's your rival.
B
But like, you're.
A
You.
B
You're a Nick fan, Allen. I mean, like, now, obviously a little bit more neutral because you work for the team, but, like, when you were growing up a Knick fan, you didn't watch the occasional net game when they were on.
A
I. I watched the Nets in the early 90s because I love Jaws and Petrovich.
B
All right, so the Fraud, it's one.
A
Of my favorite players. I love Fraud.
B
According to Stu. Fraud.
A
Exactly. I'm a fraud. No, I watch. Yeah. I mean, even now, I watch a lot of. A lot of net games when. If they're playing and the Knicks aren't, and I'll watch that. I just.
C
I'd like to catch a nap. You're looking at. Looking for a good way to take a little snooze.
A
You know, you see the other team, too, and you learn about the other team. But. And also, I mean, it's a great. Those guys are great.
C
Oh, the broadcast.
B
Fantastic. Broadcast is phenomenal.
A
Yeah. You kidding me?
B
Let's squeeze in Kevin and Peekskill. You're On ESPN New York. What's up, Kevin?
D
Hi, how are you guys? First time caller. So, yeah, I want to get your take on this, Don. I'm not a fraud in terms of my fandom, but he'll be the judge. I'm coming. I'm a big time Mets fan. My favorite player of all time is Jacob deGrom. I got his jersey, obviously, when he was, you know, on top of the world, of the pitching world. I'm coming to the game tonight, just parked. But I want to know if I can wear my degrom jersey. I haven't worn it since he's been gone, but I figure, obviously I want the Mets to win, but, you know, I figured one last time to honor the player, thank him for, you know, in some way thank him for being a great player. What do you think?
A
Oh, boy.
B
I don't know if it's fraud because again, you still are rooting for the Mets. You're not rooting for him, but it definitely. It's a bad optic. Right. Wearing the, the GROM jersey and you're honoring him. He left, man. I don't think he wanted to be here. You know, he was wanting to go to the Atlanta Braves. I don't, I think you gotta let it go, man. I wouldn't wear it.
D
So then wait till he's retired and then wear it again at the stadium.
A
Yeah.
B
Because then you can look back at the memories. But right now, he's the enemy. He left, he left under, you know, not, not the greatest of circumstances. You need this game back. I don't like the juju. I don't like it.
A
This is like, this is like an Islanders fan wearing a Tavares jersey. When the Maple Leafs come to town.
B
That's maybe that's a little. Because Tavares really screwed you guys over.
A
Yeah.
D
He's a Ranger. The Rangers aren't our rival. Never been our. And I don't care for the Rangers ever.
B
No, but I, I listen, you're not a fraud. But, but here, here's what I would worry about, Kevin. There are going to be people that are going to look at you at Citi Field and just assume because that's the jersey you're wearing that you might be rooting for him. And you don't want that. You don't want that vibe that people think you're rooting for deGrom.
D
Yeah. And I've been to many games over the last couple years and I never worn it again because I was like, you know what? He's on Another team. I can't wait till, you know, once he's retired, then I can wear it again. Maybe.
B
Because think about this. If you. Are you a football fan?
D
Yeah. Jack.
B
If you were a Giant fan and the. The, you know, the Eagles come down, you're wearing a Barkley jersey, people are going to be thinking, he must be rooting for the Eagles. He's wearing a Barkley jersey to the Eagle game. Like, if you. If you're walking around the stadium and they were playing the Reds, I wouldn't think too much. I would think, oh, the guy's a deGrom fan. And throw away his jersey the night that he's pitching. Guys. And Kevin, thank you for the phone call. I don't like the vibe. I don't like the look.
A
Do you think it also gives him an outright. To me, doesn't it give him an out? Either way, he wins tonight.
B
Well, no, because he says he's rooting for the mats, of course, but he want. He wants an excuse to wear the jersey. But you know what? I think secretly, if deGrom pitched well and beat the Mets as he's walking out of there, he might feel a little better because he loves deGrom. Because why. Why do you have to so desperately wear the jersey?
A
Yeah.
B
You know, I agree. So it just sends out a bad. What do you think, Peter? It just sounds a bad vibe, right? People are just going to think that you're rooting for deGrom. You just happen to wear his jersey on a night that he's pitching. The one time he's pitching at Citi Field, he's his return to Citi Field. You were in a degrom jersey. People are gonna think you're rooting for the guy.
C
Can I, can I, can I throw a flip to that, though?
B
Do it.
C
Go ahead, knock them. Knock yourselves out. The Mets suck. Go root for degrom.
B
Well, that takes the fun out of the whole thing.
C
I'm listening. I'm just saying, who cares?
B
Most of the people that most of. Most of fraud. Somebody sucks, right? Cause you're trying to jump ship, right?
A
If you're winning.
B
We weren't making a phone call. We're not getting that many. Other than the yo yo that went to college in a bit, found sex and completely forgot the baseball, Right? For the most part, you're not getting calls. Like, I was a Yank fan. I was tired of the championship, so I decided, you know what? I'm going to root for the Padres because I just wanted to lose.
C
No, no, you're right. I'm just saying of all pain. If you want to pay tribute to deGrom because you really loved the guy. I'm just saying don't overthink it. Your team is checked out anyway. So go celebrate. Go celebrate a guy who was part of bringing to a World Series. Knock yourself out. I don't think it's fraudulent. A little weird might not be what I do, but fraud is strong.
B
I just don't like. I don't like. I don't like the vibe. I feel you 111-800-919-3776 lot of phone calls to get to. We got our picks coming up and of course Ian at 6 right here on ESPN New York.

A
Locked and loaded since yesterday, baby.
B
Feels good to have those three, three, three, three point plays in our pocket.
A
That's nice.
B
Let's see. Ace is in Brooklyn. You're on ESPN New York. What's up Ace?
D
How you doing, Don? I just wanted to ask you, am I a fraud? Because over the last couple of years my baseball fandom has been like kind of on the fence. I feel like the Yankees have been playing in my face for the last couple years and with the statements that they made on Monday kind of showing their political leanings as, you know, as a black guy, I kind of felt a little offended. And that's why I like that you guys stay out of the politics of it all. So I wanted to know, am I a fraud? Because I'm kind of breaking up with the Yankees. I'm not going to pick up another team. But I do like seeing the Mets do good. Like I've always liked seeing them do good. I'm not going to like actively cheer for them, but it's like a nice consolation prize, I feel like. So does that make me a fraud?
B
Well, if you don't pick up another team ace, then you're entitled to do what you got to do. So I wouldn't call you a fraud. If you were to just start following the Mets or if you felt like the Yankees political leanings were more to you and then went back to the Yankees again, it's fraudulent. This is a very, very dicey subject. But you know what? It's Friday.
A
Who.
C
You know what, man up.
B
We just got to do it. No, I think we're big boys. I don't even have to. We're not giving any leanings. I understand the awkwardness if you are anti Trump and a lot of people are half the nation, probably a little less than half considering Trump won. I could understand you being in a way, if the Yankees, you know, seem to embrace Trump or were they just embracing the fact that it was the President of the United States and they would the exact same thing if it was Joe Biden? I don't know. That's why you can't get caught up in it. You really can't, because you'll be surprised. What? So if you have a favorite actor and you find out they voted for somebody that you didn't know, you're not going to watch those movies anymore. It's not if you don't make it about politics. Okay. I believe that if meeting the president to a lot of people is a big deal. Now if I had to guess, did Aaron Judge vote for Trump? Maybe. I'd probably guess he did. Doesn't necessarily mean that he did. That he was gracious to him and hit two home runs on the day that he came to visit him.
C
That was very kind of him, you.
B
Know, but the point is. So you're going to throw your whole fandom away because the Yankees seem to lean right? Well, I got news for you.
C
I got news for you.
B
I'm gonna expose the whole thing. Where do you think most billionaires vote?
C
Yeah, I was gonna say, I was gonna say two things. One, where do you think the Yankees the most buttoned up corporate team in sports, as rich as they get, by the way, the Steinbrenners relationship with Trump, well documented. If you saw the clip yesterday, Trump talked about, he was shouting Out Randy Levine casually, because they don't. So number one, as a Yankee fan, you shouldn't be surprised. And to Don's other players point, I got news for you. Look up and down all the leagues, you can probably count on one hand the people, the owners that aren't Trump guys, right? So it's. I'm not saying that means you don't have the right to feel away about it, but just know that you don't got a whole lot of options in.
B
That way, all right? But let's live in a world, okay, where the Yankees had no political affiliation, okay? If they, if they tell the President, don't come, that's a big affiliate that's going to make people think that they lean to the left. If they welcome him with open arms, which I listen, I think it's the President of the United States, okay? However you feel about him, it's the President. So anytime that's going to be a big deal when they're coming. And if you say don't come, like, like the athletes that don't go to the White House, they're making a statement. No, they're on the other side. They don't like him. It's not good business to make those types of statements.
C
No.
B
So it's good business to just welcome in the president and all that. And so.
C
But I mean, you don't have to be like Anthony Volpe who was blushing like I would if I'd met Halle Berry. But I mean, either way, listen, it's the President, United States. What are you gonna do?
B
Are we all gonna. We gotta stop this, guys, honestly.
A
Well, why does it matter?
B
So it shouldn't matter.
A
He was 24 year old kid who's excited because, you know the President United States is in his. Oh no, he wants to talk to him.
C
I'm just saying, not some people. But no, that's totally fine.
A
It doesn't matter.
B
Hold on, hold on.
D
I'm not.
C
Hold on. We brought it up. We're not going to be dishonest. You could be totally down the middle. Mr. President, nice to meet you. And you could be like, you know, very excited. Those, each one just says different things.
A
You could also be just starstruck with the fact that like this is, this is one of the most powerful people in the world right now.
C
Well, that was the energy, I think pretty crazy. That was the energy. I thought Judge gave was sort of just like wow.
B
Like just. This is.
A
By the way, Judge, how huge did Judge look in comparison?
C
I mean, he looks huge compared to Everyone.
A
But no, it just. If that was more stark than anything else. Like, she. Like. Yeah. Like Judge looked.
C
When you say. When you see those guys, when you see him in Stanton in person.
A
Yeah.
C
By the way, Stanton, who wasn't anywhere to be found in the. In the team photo. If you were to see Stan and Judge in person, who knows?
A
Maybe he was in the job. We have no idea.
C
Casual bathroom trip.
D
Real quick.
A
I love the fact, though, that. That Ace's comment was exactly what it's about, which is like, you know, like, our thing is sports is what we do. It's what we talk about. It's our expertise. Right. And I think that's the most important part of it, is that's what we provide. But there are times like again yesterday, because of the significance of the situation, that it does come up. But if you are. If you as a fan feel a certain way because you're pulled politically a certain way, that's your prerogative. And if you just decide, you know what, I can't root for this team because of something like that. That's your prerogative. Fraud. Stuff that we do is more about fan fraud, not personal fraud. Because you could have. They could. They could trade for a player that you hate, his background. I mean, there's been a lot of athletes that have, you know, terrible backgrounds. And your team then brings them in and you're like, I'm not rooting for that team because that guy's on that team. We've seen that in the history of sports. And you have. I think, Don. Right. You would say you have every right. If you are a. If there's something about that player that offends you or you don't like or you don't believe in giving that player a second chance, whatever it is that's happened in the world. We know this has happened many times, but it's. That's different than the stuff that we do, which is sports fraud, which is more fun. Not. Not about, you know, beliefs and all that other stuff.
B
No, but all I'm saying is, is people are going to support who they support.
A
Yeah.
B
For whatever reason they do it. But unfortunately, on both sides of the ledger, it just seems like, well, if you vote for that guy, then we're done. Really. All right. I don't want to live in a world like that. I don't. No. I got bad news for you. No.
C
But maybe not.
B
But I. Don't be that way. The Yankees welcomed in the President of the United States. Did they not allow Democrats into the Building last night.
D
Right.
B
Did they openly campaign for him during the game? Right. They just welcome the president. And. And I. Maybe I'm dead wrong, but I believe that if circumstances were when Biden was president, I'm sure if Biden wanted to go, the Yankees will welcome him in, too. I don't know that for a fact, but I'm sure so. And would that be okay if Republicans decided, you know, I'm not gonna root for the Yankees anymore? I mean, people are gonna have their views, man. I mean, half of this country believes different than the other half. All right? But we're all Americans, and we're all. We all want the same stuff. We all want to try to get to the same place, but everybody takes different avenues. People grow up in different. Great thing about this country is, is the living in New Jersey is completely different than living in Nebraska, which is completely different than living in San Francisco. But we all got to try to figure out a way to get along, man. We all have to. And if you've been a Yankee fan your whole life and you were disgusted by what happened last night, and you're that mad that you're walking away.
D
I.
B
Feel bad for you, because there's a lot of things you could be walking away from.
C
But then. But that takes us full circle to which, even though I would respect it, you may have to call fraud.
B
Well, that's the bottom line of it. If you're walking away. Hold on.
C
But, Don. Don, your wife. You could fall in love with the love of your life, and she's everything, and she gave you your children and she gave you everything, and she says you're no longer allowed to be a fan of that team. We don't have time for it. It's not happening. And you. Okay, honey, that sounds fine. You may love your wife, and you have the right to do so. You're still a fraud.
B
Well, not. Not in my opinion, because I think you can. You can tap out anytime you want. You can't tap back in, and you can't go root for somebody else.
A
That's the. Sure.
B
He was suggesting. Well, I'm going to kind of root for the Mets. I'm not going to be a Met fan. No, no, no, no.
A
There's no coming back.
B
There's no coming back.
A
That choice, it's over forever.
B
And like I said. And good luck finding a baseball owner that maybe leans politically the way you do.
C
Well, no.
B
Or a Packer or a basketball or a. For every Mark Cuban, there's the other 30 that went the other way. That's the way it works. You know, go, go root for the basketball.
C
Might be a little different.
A
You got the Packer players, but it ain't the owners.
D
Right?
C
Exactly. No, you got to root for the Packers. No owner. There you go.
A
That's all you got. That's all you got.
B
Now, listen. But it's. Again, I, I, I, We. We don't get political here. But sometimes when the elephant's in the room, it could be talked about and it can be talked about with humor and could be talked about with civility. That's all I'm asking for. Because, you know, we live in a really crazy. You know, the Tri State area is really crazy. I know that we technically in New York, New Jersey, live in blue states, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't people that. That think that way in the suburbs and all that. So we try to cater to everybody. And I just want to be able to. And this should be the one place where we can kind of go and all agree.
A
Sports was the one thing that divided us.
B
Yeah.
A
That was what separated us.
B
But let's just.
A
Now it's the uniform.
B
I knew a call like that was going to come, but. And it'd be interesting. It could end up being a rallying cry for the Yankees. There's a. They did play well last night, that's for sure. Let's go to Muhammad out on Long Island. You're on espn, New York. What's up, Mohammed?
D
What's going on, guys? Thanks for taking my call, man. Glad all three of y' all guys back together. So I tried to get through yesterday, but you guys are really busy on me. Don't worry. I sat and listened to the whole show. But I wanted to say this. Yesterday. I was dying laughing. Allen, you just gonna steal Don Sauce like that with the 4 and 501 in the big city? What is that about, Alan?
A
I was filling in. I was. I was running point for. For a day. And I like it so much. And I. I think it's just a great way to get into the segment. You're honoring me was important.
D
It was an homage, a nice homage.
B
Yeah, yeah, there you go.
A
I can't do it as well as he can, but I tried.
D
No, absolutely not. I didn't want to tell you that part, but, you know, you got it. And then.
A
Peter, you could have left that part out. Mo. You could have.
D
I won't get to my Mets point. But then. Peter. Peter. What The. The. Speaking of tissues and napkin, do we have D word what's going on up there, guys?
A
That was one of our better moments.
D
But no, I can't believe he just.
C
Rolled with it, too. He just kept going. I was, I was very impressed.
D
At all.
C
No, he kept rolling with it. It was impressive.
D
Last time I called, I think Don was out and you guys were getting ready for a softball game. But Alan, I called and said, you know, what were our expectations for the Mets going into the season? You jumped me. You jumped me, Alan, and said, CX the cs. And I. And, And I. I wonder, you know, and when I tried to call yesterday, I wanted to say, here's my own little Thursday rewrite. Suppose the Mets. Because remember, we needed all 6161 to get in a playoffs last year. So suppose we lose those two games and we don't get in. Do you guys still feel like we're a Juan Soto away from going to the World Series? And Don always says. Well, he's been saying lately, I'm tired of being hot. I don't want it to be Fluky. I don't want. Can we be a legit and competent team. Right. So I think last year we got hot at the right time and we. And we rerolled into the cf, into the. Yeah, the cs.
A
Yep.
D
But I don't think that we were legit a cst. And. And this year shows the proof that this team was flawed last year and they got Fluky. So I just wanted to get your opinion.
A
He makes a. Don, he makes a great point. It's what you've been saying. This is a really good point. Was last year was the fluke and you were. You were one Alonzo home run away from being out early and no one thinking anything of it or, or not.
B
Making the playoffs at all if they lose to the Braves down in that series, remember?
A
Yeah.
B
They get swept in that double header, they're out.
A
And are you thinking anything of it? Are you saying, like.
B
Well, I. I still think. I still think they would have gotten Soto because that would have been the guy. Let's. He might get us over the hump to finally get into the. The play.
A
That really does change the attitude.
B
Right.
A
When you make a move like that.
B
But the point is you are where you are. Right? Like, even if you didn't think the Mets were as good as the fourth best team in baseball, which is suggested by going to the league championship series, you're still getting Juan Soto. But the fact is, is you. You take a huge step back, acquiring the best player. So it's a disappointing season. It really is. Now listen, you got Soto for 14 more years, but there's no getting around the fact that this has been a colossal disappointment this year. Yes, they can still make a run, but like we said before, that's not what this was supposed to be about. Maybe we'll get hot late, sneak in and be the underdog you were supposed to be. You had a five and a half game lead in this division in June and now you're going to lose this division by like a dozen games.
A
Crazy.
B
That is just disgusting.

B
Well, we all did not do particularly well in week one. However, Alan and I did get our three point plays and ended up losing the other two. While Peter three, three three was shut out, flanked, if you will. And the Bears really betrayed him on that Monday night game.
A
That was. That was in your pocket, man. I had it in your pocket.
B
It was a lot of that. We march on. It's nice to see Jarvis back. We appreciate that with the picks. So we all were in last night and Alan and I got our three point play by picking the packers who covered Peter lost with the commanders. So we only have two picks each today and only three points on the line. So, Pete, you got to get your act together, buddy. You'll do it, though. You've done it. You've done well enough since being here that I know you'll be able to get yourself back up.
A
Should we have Peter go first then?
B
I think that's probably a good idea.
C
Was that how it works?
B
However it works is how we make it work. Right? And we decided what do we do?
C
Hold on. But then we have to make a decision now, permanently.
B
No, we don't have to make a decision permanently. That's the way the other show did it. This show is gonna go by feel. And the feel is you make the feel.
C
I'm out.
A
It feels like the old show.
C
I'm not doing it.
B
No.
C
I'm not getting bullied into making picks. I won't do that.
A
You. You kind of are in a struggle. So you need to like, boldly give us your picks right out of the gate. Like, I've.
C
Wait. Okay. I just. I just want to set a standard here moving forward. This means whoever two people are feeling is the way that we're going to go.
A
You guys are feeling real cocky.
B
For people that combined for six points in the first week. It's a great point.
A
That's a good point. I'm second to last place, but I'm not last.
B
Don and Allen tied with a three.
A
Point pick, but I guess one of.
B
Them has to go first today or it could be Peter who didn't get any.
C
All right. I mean, listen. What. What the hell? I don't even know what the hell I'm doing. I'm just making this thing up as I go along, aren't I?
B
That's clear.
A
Aren't we all?
C
Yeah. I mean, it's just early on, it just feels like a complete and utter crapshoot. I don't even know know what to say.
B
Sound like the Volpe injury.
C
Well, I. Exactly. Well, I'll start here. I told you guys I like them and I do. I'm gonna go right against our Alex Monaco earlier. Sorry. Give me the Cowboys minus five and a half. I just don't see a lot of. Don't see a lot of success for big Russ in this spot. Not. Not getting the protection you want. Cowboys looked pretty good on offense in that first game before things went haywire in the second half. I don't know if the Cowboys are a good team this year. Think they will be able to muster up a seven point victory against the Giants and I'll make it my one point play.
B
I'm wow.
C
I'm going to take a stab one more time at Indianapolis not being who they seem to be last week. The Broncos have a short line in Indy. I don't think the Broncos are an absolute world beater but I think the kind of team that beats the teams they should. I would include the Colts in that category. Give me the Bronqs going on the road to buck those Colts. A real battle of horses if you want. Will the Broncos my two point play minus one and a half at the Colts.
B
I like it.
A
What was your survivor pick?
B
Oh yeah. What's your survivor or you didn't make it yet?
C
I didn't make it yet.
A
All right.
B
I'm in the process of making it.
C
Yeah, come back. Let's. Let's regroup.
B
I'll have it for you. Just I'm on the app and I'm having trouble. It's my, it's my problem, not the splash.
C
Well, we know you and apps is a complicated relationship.
B
Very, very complicated. All right. So I guess I'll jump in. My one point play is I'm going to go with the Eagles getting a point and a half.
C
I like to pick.
B
I just feel like listen, the Chiefs are going to make the playoffs. They're going to be okay. But they're not. They're not that team anymore. And I think Philadelphia is becoming that team and both of them are on short rest. But you know, one of them was home on Thursday. The other one was Brazil on Friday. So I think the short rest favors the Eagles a little bit more than the Chiefs and I think Philadelphia's got it going on as the one point play and I'm with Peter too as my two point play. The Broncos covering against the Colts. I know it's on the road but as Peter said, the Broncos should be able to take care of business. I think people are getting crazy about the Colts start but I don't know how sustainable it is. And Sean Payton is 40 and 29 against the spread as a road favorite in his career and he's three and oh as the Bronco head coach when he's been a road favorite. So I like those stats. I think they bode well for me. So I like the Broncos given a point and a half as my two, two, two point play. So I got the Eagles as my one and the Broncos as a two.
A
All right, well, we're all gonna then be on this Broncos Colts game. My one pointer is going to be Broncos to lay in the one and a half. Indiana Jones, baby. I just. That was more about Miami, I think than it is about the Colts. Denver's defense is excellent. Colts, by the way, haven't had a 2 no start since 2009. Good. You believe that? So that's why I'm on the Broncos. And all those reading for the 1 point, my 2 point and my survivor pick, the Rams. I'll lay the five and a half against the Titans. I'm not worried about this whole west coast team coming east. McVeigh is 178 at 1pm Eastern starts, so that doesn't affect them. He's also 9 and 1 against the AFC south, so there's no issues here. I just feel like the, the Titans with a young quarterback. By the way, another. There's a couple of these. I think there's four of them this week. Number one overall quarterback picks going head to head. This is one of them. Stafford, obviously, and, and Cam Ward. So that's, that's one to watch. But rookie quarterback in this situation against a guy like McVeigh. McVeigh never loses these games. So give me the Rams. That's my two and my survivor pick.
B
Oh, that's gonna be your survivor pick too?
C
Yeah, I, I made my Survivor pick too, and it actually mirrors one of my picks. I, I have gone with Dallas as my Survivor pick.
A
Good. Early Dallas survivors Survivor choice.
C
I think so. I mean, I don't know how much I'm gonna love them, but I like them in this spot.
B
I really do.
A
Spot. Yeah, it's, it's, it's a good. That's gonna go.
B
And again, I don't think the Cowboys are going to be a team necessarily, Peter, that you're gonna regret not having that pick the rest of the year.
A
Yeah, I think so. Now Survivor is just a straight up win, right? Yeah. Yeah.
B
So it's picking a winner. And if you, and if you lose the Cowboys the first pick the rest of the season, I think you could survive, right? So those are our picks. So follow them and Jarv will probably have the tweet a little bit later on and we will reassess. Come up on Monday. Episode theme: Baseball's critical stretch run for NY teams, fandom “fraudulence,” Volpe’s struggles, politics mixing into Yankee narratives, and NFL picks.
The third hour dives into local New York baseball at a pivotal moment in the season, wrestling with whether the Yankees can seize momentum for a playoff push, while dissecting the Mets’ spiraling collapse and the emotional toll on players and fans. The crew peppers in debates about true fan loyalty (“fraud” talk), a nuanced discussion about reactions to politics in sports, and concludes with their NFL picks segment, all delivered in their signature energetic, often humorous banter.

This episode is a quintessential slice of late-season New York sports radio: reckonings with hope and heartbreak, arguments about what being a “real fan” means, the intersection of social issues with the sports world, and the ever-present anticipation (and anxiety) for the next football Sunday.
Memorable closing thought from Don [36:28]:
“We don’t get political here. But sometimes when the elephant’s in the room, it could be talked about…and talked about with civility. Because we live in a really crazy…Tri-State area…and this should be the one place where we can all agree.”
