Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers. Hi, the Big Five O'Clock Hour. We go with Don McGregor and Peter Rosenberg. I'm Alan Hahn. 800-919-3776 is the number we have lots of calls, lots of conversation. The Knicks with a big weekend. They follow up a bad weekend with a really good one. A couple of comeback wins. Some clutch play from Brunson Mitchell Robins impactful in just a few minutes. But you can see it again. You know, your eyes will tell you the story sometimes. And what did Herm Edwards used to say? Listen with your eyes. And that's what I did this weekend watching the Knicks and it just looked different and I want to see more. And that's what March is going to show us. St. John's clinching the regular season Big east championship, Confetti trophies at Madison Square Garden. Big celebration and we're a week away from the Big east tournament and see if they can have another celebration there. Yankee injuries to discuss. DJ lemayhue is going to get an MRI on the calf, although he feels like it shouldn't be too bad, but still the fact that he's already has something he's dealing with. But Luis Heal has been reported now he had an MRI and he's got a lat strain and that means he's a no throw for six weeks. So that's where the Yankees begin things. The Rangers Islanders play tonight at the Garden. And the Rangers already making some more deals as they are starting to reset the franchise. And we got tons of calls to get to fellas. So again, we have a little potpourri.
Don McGregor
Yeah. Of we're ready for you. Come on, bring it. What's on your mind?
Don Hahn
All right, let's go. 800-937- what's on your mind, New York?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't like that voice.
Don Hahn
I didn't like doing it.
Peter Rosenberg
Very uncomfortable.
Don Hahn
See, when I Talked about hating DJs, that's the voice that would make me craz. Matt's in Nashville. Hey, Matt.
Matt
Hey, guys. Just a couple points about the Yankees. You know, obviously going into, I guess this spring training, third base was A whole losing dj. I agree with Don. Like kind of a bad guy. You don't want to say it because nobody roots for injuries, but it's not a bad thing. I mean, at the end of last year they kind of had to ilm. It was awkward. I still don't know. That was really real kind of a veteran way of not making sure he got embarrassed by not being on the playoff roster. But I mean, Alan, you mentioned earlier he's still good defensively. Just don't know if he can hit. I don't think he's good defensively anymore. Like, I absolutely doesn't have to.
Don Hahn
Matt, I'm not going to argue with you. Right. Because I. My question is then why is that the answer? That was their first option at third base, right, Matt?
Matt
So I think that makes me wonder.
Don Hahn
Like with Brian Cash and then what are we doing? If that's your option and you're telling me it's not a big deal. If it's not a big deal, then why was he even the option?
Matt
I wouldn't say it's not a big deal. I think it's more of we just knew that was going to be a shortcoming. Like, I wish we had a much better third base. I mean, I'm excited about Peraza, but he doesn't profile as a third base bat. He's a little more contact than Pop, but.
Don Hahn
Right. But there's no thing with Peraza feels like, you know, Esteban Florial, who we kept hearing about for years.
Don McGregor
But I think the Yankee fans, they always complain that the Yankees are cheap. Why are they spending more money? Why with the third highest payroll in baseball, do you have glaring holes every year? This year it's third base, before it was left field. That why are there points?
Matt
And I think it's very fair. I mean it's, it's a, it's a problem I have, but it's. I think it's just the situation we're in. I think it's just bad contracts that kind of build up year over year. I mean there was, it was 10 million to Sevy, 10 million to Hicks for years that, you know, that kind of hamstring. You got 27 going to Stanton right now. You got 18 going to Stroman. And like I'm not going to complain about Stan. I love him as a Yankee. He performs in the playoffs playing on Stroman either. Because you know what, like, at the end of the day, him as your fifth starter is not the end of the world. That's why he'll going down hurts, but it's not the end of the world because he's probably just your fifth starter, maybe your fourth. And now you got Stroman hopping in. So. And then Peter, just to talk on what you mentioned earlier about Dominguez. Dominguez clearly isn't like a very good left fielder in terms of glove. I think they're hoping he's going to figure it out. But the. And Griffin mentioned about how he was great in the minors. Defensively, I haven't. I don't think anyone can truly know because who's actually scouting miners defensively unless you're in a front office of some.
Don Hahn
Right.
Don McGregor
But the front office felt like he can make the conversion to left. You went out and got a center fielder right thinking.
Matt
And that's why I wouldn't move Belly because Belly is an all world center fielder. He's unbelievable. So center field's a much more important position defensively to have. So I can either go like I can move belly to left, which is. That's fine. And it makes Dominguez more comfortable in center, but he's just going to be fine. I think I'd rather have a bad left fielder and a great center fielder than wasting an elite defender and left and just having a fine defender and center.
Don McGregor
Yeah. Unless. Unless there's just something about him not wanting to play left field. The prestige of being a center fielder. Remember, it wasn't like he had a ton of options. But was what made going to the Yankees attractive for Bellinger? Was it the short porch or was it, hey, center field for the New York Yankees, That's a thing. Left field for the Yankees isn't the same kind of thing. But yeah, here's a veteran, an MVP, a Gold Glove guy. What did I say? Only 49 games, 47 games in left field. So obviously it's not his thing. But this is what spring training is for. Who's to say that they won't make that switch at some point, if he continues to have issues in left field, maybe they will convert him back to center field. But they are thinking about ways to make up for losing Juan Soto and they're hoping Bellinger, with that short porch, Dominguez can rake the way he did when he was first called up a couple of years ago. So obviously their motivation, Allen, was to try to improve offensively. And when you lose Juan Soto, you can understand why.
Don Hahn
Yeah, it's a lot to make up for as well because not only you lose Soto, you also don't have Stanton. At least for the start of the season. Bob is in Florida.
Don McGregor
Hey, Bob, what's up?
Bob
I have two questions because you're talking. How about Brunson?
Don McGregor
So is Brunson the best Knick closer.
Bob
Of all time in Nick history? And which new athlete do you want to see in all major sports, culinary athletes do you want to see? Like in the last moment of the game? You want to see Judge Brunson Scanton?
Don Hahn
Mariana Rivera. Oh, you all time or you mean current?
Bob
My current New York athlete.
Don Hahn
Current New York athlete.
Don McGregor
Really good question.
Don Hahn
I like that one, Bob.
Bob
Like all time in Knicks history.
Don Hahn
Okay, I can answer that. I like that. That's a good one. I do like that. Current, right. And that includes everybody. So quarterbacks, all of it, right? Well, every team has a quarterback now, but I like that, Bob. I'll say this, and I was. Wiley Zerbiak and I were talking about this. When you think about it, what Brunson is showing you this season as the NBA's top scorer in clutch moments and highest efficiency shooter in clutch moments. Carmelo Anthony had some clutch shots in his career, but they weren't. There was a lot of times he didn't make those shots. Patrick Ewing, we know, is probably known more for ones he didn't make than the ones he did. So keep going back. I honestly can't think of another player that was just the guy that had dagger after dagger in big moments. They just, you know, Jamal Crawford is the closest thing I could come to. And as much as we love Jamal Crawford, he didn't play on great Nick teams.
Don McGregor
No.
Don Hahn
So it wasn't like these were high leverage games that he was doing it. Brunson's doing it in high leverage games. So he, you know, just by default, he might be one of the best. Now, let's go through it, shall we? Whether it's baseball, a pitcher, or. I want this guy at bat. I don't think it's Judge.
Don McGregor
No, it can't be Judge. It can't be Judge. Is it Stanton? I guess. Yes. Dan's been big in the postseason.
Don Hahn
There's no football guy.
Don McGregor
There's no football guy. I don't think. There's no net.
Don Hahn
Diaz. Edwin. Diaz. Soto. Soto came up pretty bad.
Don McGregor
He has. Would be in the conversation. Although I wouldn't put him over Brunson. I don't think there's. I mean, listen, Alonso hit the big one. I get.
Don Hahn
I think still like big stop and a big moment, you know?
Peter Rosenberg
You know, don't. Don't sleep on playoff g. That's what I said.
Don Hahn
I said stand at the very beginning.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes, but he doesn't have the moment. But he's had a lot of moments.
Don Hahn
He certainly had that V moment against the Guardians. He was insane.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I mean that doesn't give me.
Don McGregor
Standby against the hardest.
Don Hahn
Throwing closer in the game. And he hit it. He hit it to friggin Cincinnati.
Don McGregor
Diaz would be there. Shusturkin. Why not Shusturkin? He's gone to two conference finals. Brunson hasn't. I mean, with as a Nick. So Shusturkin would be there.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, and no one we're talking about in this group.
Don Hahn
Kreider was Kreider. That could be.
Don McGregor
But I. Not. Not to the level that Brunson.
Peter Rosenberg
None of these guys have gone all the way. So they're all in the same category. They're on the same general range. Right.
Don Hahn
I guess you're right.
Peter Rosenberg
I think Stanton and Brunson are a fair comp.
Don Hahn
That's interesting.
Peter Rosenberg
Although. But the difference is what Brunson gives you all year long for 82 games. Respectfully to Giancarlo.
Don Hahn
Now again, Aaron Rodgers, if he was still a Jet, would he be in the conversation? No, you don't want. As a Jet. He hasn't done it as a Jet.
Peter Rosenberg
Now as a Giant. What you just wait and see.
Don McGregor
When he mentioned history, obviously Mo would be the one. Right. Even though. Even though he did lose an 01.
Don Hahn
Number one with a bullet though, he's.
Don McGregor
Still like literally a closer. The greatest in the game. 100% in the hall of Fame.
Don Hahn
How close do you put Derek Jeter on the list? He was money in clubs.
Don McGregor
He was big. And Eli with the two Super Bowls. So those are the three that jumped Piazza. He was. He did. He was clutch for sure. But you know, he had moments, but not. Not to the level of the other three.
Don Hahn
Any. Any pretty clutch. Yeah, I was going to say 86, Mets level stuff.
Peter Rosenberg
Keith was.
Don McGregor
Keith was very good of the hitters. Like they were all pretty clutch in those moments in 86. But Keith had some, you know, really big hits.
Don Hahn
I mean, Eli.
Don McGregor
That's right. Eli. Because, you know, two super bowl winning drives and he had a lot of winning drives.
Don Hahn
He had a lot of game winning.
Don McGregor
No, he did. So Eli would be there, but it's the M.O. would be. And then any. So it's hard to put.
Don Hahn
If Moe's one, who's two.
Don McGregor
Would it be Eli? Just because of the two super bowl drives, don't you think it has to.
Don Hahn
Be right there, right like, because of that. And. And again, he also had clutch moments in other playoff games. Conference championship.
Don McGregor
We do have a list Wednesday. We can hold this off till then. Or do we ride this out?
Peter Rosenberg
What about John Starks?
Don Hahn
Just kidding.
Peter Rosenberg
Too soon. You know, we just did a read.
Don Hahn
He's got. He's got two car dealerships, and you got to do that.
Don McGregor
Frazier was money in that. In.
Don Hahn
Well, in 1970, very few players who have had a better game seven in a championship Right. Round than him. And the stats that he put up in that game. And it's overshadowed because of Willis Reed.
Don McGregor
Right? Exactly. But he was money.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Don McGregor
In a championship, in a decisive game. So he would. He would have to be considered.
Don Hahn
Wow. All times tough.
Don McGregor
Phil Sims had one of the greatest super bowl performances in history.
Don Hahn
Like. Like Whitey Ford. Like, you'd have to really go back if you want to. Like, who's getting the ball when you need a win.
Don McGregor
I'm. We can work on this and really get to work.
Don Hahn
I see what you're doing. Okay. All right, let's keep it rolling. 800 now. 193776. Trying to get the people that have been waiting the longest. Dan is in Saratoga. Hey, Dan.
Don McGregor
Hi, Dan.
Jeremy
What's up, guys? How you doing?
Don McGregor
Good, good.
Jeremy
Hey, I have a comment on the Knicks, and I really have. I've been itching to ask Peter a question, so if I could I get to that afterwards?
Don Hahn
Peter first.
Jeremy
Okay, Peter, since you're a music junkie, I am, too. I'm gonna list my top two hip hop songs of all time. I want to see what you think.
Don Hahn
Songs, top two.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Jeremy
Yes. I'm going. Souls of mischief. 93.
Don Hahn
Tool acidity.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Jeremy
I'm calling Lost Boys. Renee.
Don Hahn
Lost Boys.
Peter Rosenberg
Listen, they're Lost Boys, Renee. Listen, they're both in the conversation for fantastic hip hop songs. I mean, 93. Till infinity has become. I think a song like a fair amount of people would choose is like, their number one perfect hip hop song.
Don Hahn
Never get sick of it.
Peter Rosenberg
People like. I love it. It's a great, great record. Renee is a fantastic song.
Don Hahn
Heartbreaking story.
Peter Rosenberg
Sad. Beautiful, wonderful song. My favorite thing about the song, Renee, I don't know why you laughed. You're obviously a complete psychopath, right? Yeah. It's about a guy's girlfriend getting killed. Not hear the song. It's.
Jeremy
I know the song, but I just. Yeah, Don.
Peter Rosenberg
Don just, you know, his choice to laugh there shows we're talking to a maniac.
Don McGregor
I was gonna say it's somebody that has killed his girl. Well, you laughed.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, it's.
Don McGregor
It's a. But just like it wasn't one of those uncomfortable. I'm nervous last night.
Don Hahn
But the thing is, the story starts out so sweet, right? He meets her, they fall in love, they get a little hot dog, they.
Don McGregor
Go for a walk.
Don Hahn
Then all of a sudden he goes back to her place. She has to pick up some food for the dog. Then all of a sudden, she puts on a hoodie and some leggings like, yo, I got attend the Rooney. Like that's great. Like. And then. And then the next thing you know, I wake up, she's dead.
Don McGregor
And they say.
Peter Rosenberg
And they say to her, Mr. Cheeks, Renee's gone. And that's how the song ends. And he's laughing now. The most insane part of that song to me, though, the most insane part is he's telling the story about she's been shot. Her mom calls and says, meet me at St. Luke's right? I get on the Van Wyck, I gotta make it there quick. He's flying down there, right? He's going. And then he goes. Talks about going 100 miles an hour. Says, I'm going to buck. I'm smoking.
Don McGregor
Boom.
Peter Rosenberg
And the whole nine. Yeah, you still made time to smoke the blunt.
Don Hahn
Gotta get there on the way to.
Peter Rosenberg
The hospital knowing your girl's got a light.
Don Hahn
I had a light.
Peter Rosenberg
I gotta ask Mr. Cheeks about this one day. It's a great record, though. There's no question.
Jeremy
It is a great record. Really quick on the Knicks. Really quick on the Knicks. I'm sorry, I know we're 40 and 20. I know where we are. I'm really happy with the team. But I think this Mikhail Bridges signing is going to be up there with the Saquon Barkley sign that you're drafting a number two five first round picks.
Don McGregor
Don't.
Don Hahn
Don't get fixated. Don't get fixated on the five again. Some of them are so heavily protected that the value of them are not like what you think they're not like, all of a sudden they're going to have all these, you know, third overall picks. These are picks that are so protected. They're going to be in the twenties. But. But you're. But you're right now just like the Barkley thing, which didn't end well for the Giants because of how he left and you got nothing for him. The result of Bridges, you can't judge the trade until you see what comes of it. That's all I'm saying. So if they sign him Then they have him, and you hope he's part of winning. But if they decide, all right, we're. We're not going to give him the extension that he's due this offseason, and they flip him for something else, it still carries over. You get what I'm saying?
Jeremy
This is why I think he's not gonna work out with the Knicks, because the interview did with him a couple days ago where he was, like, really timid. I think the fans are getting to him, and it's just gonna get louder and louder.
Don Hahn
I don't think you're wrong. I don't think he's.
Jeremy
Vote for it.
Don Hahn
When he said. Yeah, when. When he was asked about the crowd reacting to him doing something, and he said, I didn't hear them. I didn't love that. I didn't love that as a response. Anytime that starts to happen, it kind of suggests that he's not, you know, not listening. Tessa West Caldwell. Hey, Tess.
Alan Hahn
Hey, guys.
Bob
Thanks so much for taking my call. So I do have a comment really quickly about the DJ and the live band. I love the weddings where it's just an awesome dj, where he does everything from his station. He gets the crowd going. He gets everybody bumping. You playing the right music. I don't like when they also have an mc. That's the one.
Don McGregor
There you go.
Don Hahn
I think that's my issue. Maybe I shouldn't have said dj.
Don McGregor
I should have said when there's an.
Don Hahn
MC and it's this guy and he's got, like, the. The tux that I got from, like, you know, I don't know, 40 years ago.
Bob
He rented it real quick.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Bob
Like, after the wedding. Yeah, that kind of thing.
Don Hahn
Like, I can't. Like, you give me the cheesy. The. The cheesy. Like Don did. The voice. The little radio voice. Like. Like, I. I've had. I had a bad experience, which is why. But I'm getting crushed for this take, so I'm gonna have to.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't. I'm surprised you're getting crushed, because a lot of people, when I first brought this up around my wedding, were saying, no band is better. I'm surprised you're getting crushed.
Don Hahn
You're thinking. But I'm not talking about when I.
Bob
See breaks and stuff like that. Like, the band.
Don Hahn
I'm not talking about the wedding singer movie. Like, I don't mean that kind of band. I. I mean, like, again, like, I don't know. Never mind.
Alan Hahn
What do you mean?
Bob
Because that's the only band I know a Live band.
Don Hahn
How do I explain what I was. What I told you, like. Like a. Like a jazz band.
Peter Rosenberg
Like a. Oh, no, you mean like a jazz quartet. But they can't play, like me. Dance music.
Don Hahn
No, they don't.
Peter Rosenberg
No, you just mean, like, when you.
Bob
Have a live band like that, what do you do? When they take five, they need to take a break. So what are you playing?
Don Hahn
I eat, talk to people.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, listen as. As God is my will.
Bob
It's corny because it's like, now you hear everybody's conversation. That's why I don't like live bands. Because some type of music.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, no, you gotta play music during the band's break, Tessa. But let me just say this. My cousin got married a few years ago, and he was so psyched about the band they got, and they paid a lot of money. Just so you know, a decent wedding band.
Don Hahn
Oh, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
You're looking at 10 grand. 10, 15 grand. It's real money, so. Absolutely, I swear to you, the entire wedding, between setup, breaks, and just how long each song goes. I'm not kidding. They played about 11 songs. Like, when you add it up, because each song is about six minutes long. They take a break. They don't. Whereas a DJ, you can hear 75 songs. Songs during your wedding.
Don Hahn
I understand.
Peter Rosenberg
I want those moments.
Don Hahn
I think. I think MC is my issue, not the DJ song. There you go.
Bob
I agree. That's exactly what it is.
Peter Rosenberg
A badass stinks a badass.
Bob
Because they're corny, and it's like they're cornballs. So, like, get away from people.
Don McGregor
Thank you.
Don Hahn
All right, so, Tess.
Bob
Get away from me.
Don Hahn
Tess, you get what I was saying? Then you understand. I just use the wrong. The wrong way to identify Gemini.
Bob
That's that Gemini connection. I get what you're saying. It's the mc. You like. You like. You like the dj. So my question is this. And it's really for Don. I'm trying to, like, you know, stay on my Lakers coattails and my devil's coattails. That's the only thing that brings me happiness as a fan right now. Because we're winning, we're thriving with Luca. We're doing great, and my Devils are doing great. But as far as.
Don Hahn
By the way, Jack Hughes took a big right shoulder.
Don McGregor
Yeah, they sent him home, dad. He's not on the road.
Bob
I'm a little nervous, but I'm still trying to be optimistic. I'm still trying to be optimistic, but we always have injuries during the spring, so I'm trying to stay Calm with them, too. But with the Giants, I'm going to be honest with you. I am at the cliff now because I feel like we're the new 016 Lions, where all of us are going to be wearing bags. I'm really serious. I'm about to decorate a bag to go to the game in the 25 season because it's like, we're so embarrassing right now. Nobody wants to come play with us. So it makes me feel like. So now we're going to have to only get better during the draft, and that's going to take forever because these are young players that need time to thrive. Learned. Like, we're gonna be bad for, like, the next, like, I don't know, five years, like, done. How are we gonna deal with. Listen, listen, I've all. Listen. We're done with the season and I still. I'm still panicking and I'm still. My stomach hurt. I'm still taking Tums. Like, I don't even know what we're gonna do it. Then you got Peter over there. Happy for you, Peter.
Don McGregor
I ain't gonna find no. Yeah, you're not.
Bob
They're, like getting everybody. They keep moving up. Like, what are we doing?
Don McGregor
People like you, Tessa, this is why they kick the tires on Stafford. This is why they might bring in Rogers, because I think they're with. You want to have an eye on the future, bring in a young quarterback. At some point, you want to start winning games and giving your fans a little something. They paid through the nose for parking and PSLs and season tickets. They deserve to see something that looks like a football team. So we'll see if they actually get Rogers to try to make something happen and then draft the quarterback. Now we're in rumors they're going to take somebody first overall, which I think will create a buzz if it's Ward or Sanders because of having the first overall pick.
Don Hahn
Oh, yeah.
Don McGregor
So we'll see there. But that's what I'm talking about. We had a meet. We were talking during the show about, like, Giant fans. Just like, you know, we talked about during the show with Anthony.
Don Hahn
Checked out.
Don McGregor
I think the fan base is checked out. We're not getting a ton of calls on the Giants. When we talk about the.
Don Hahn
There's no excitement about the fact that.
Don McGregor
They have a chance to get a hype. First of all, you have no belief in the organization. You have no belief in the owner now.
Don Hahn
Yikes.
Don McGregor
So. And even though they went to the playoffs and won a playoff game, still post super bowl, It's been basically two seasons and one playoff win since 2011 and we're. And listen, the jets have been slightly worse because they haven't gone to the playoffs at all. But I'm telling you, you're losing a generation of fans. The fans that you have now are like checked out. They'll get back in, they watch the games. But a generation of fans you could possibly lose because why would you want to climb on board with this with so many other options? It's that bad and I'm sure the Giants are conscious of that. You just can't roll out. We're the New York Giants. Look at our history, look at our ped and think that's going to be enough to get a fan base excited. 2011 was quite a few years ago and it's been really bad since then. I mean post Eli has been God awful and they and the worse than that is just not believing. I think Jet fans are a little excited about this new regime because it's new and Aaron Glenn is somebody they know they can sink their teeth into that. But the fact that the Giants ran it back with Shane and Dable, they don't really have the, the confidence in the fan base. John Mara, I'm sorry Michael even brought it up too today. Great guy, bad owner. I'm being honest.
Don Hahn
Two things can be true. Both can be true. Both can be true.
Don McGregor
He's a highly respected guy that I, that I really do have affection for because growing up the Maras were something that's important but I'm sorry his resume post Wellington passing away. Yes, two Super Bowls. But a lot of that was built under his dad and built by the legacy of Ernie. Of course he and since then left to his own devices he has made poor decisions. So right now there's not a lot to believe in. Jet fans have a new regime. That's why I wanted to change over with the Giants. Get fans excited about a new coach, a new general manager, a high draft pick. But running it back I think was a huge, huge mistake. But this is what we're left with now. They've got to show that they're more 20, 22 than they were in 23 and 24 of the of the major teams. It's a historic fan, team history, franchise, all that.
Don Hahn
One of my favorites of the major teams we have here in New York. The confidence level in ownership or in just the hierarchy? Right. Where would the Giants land? It's got to be almost at the bottom.
Don McGregor
I mean Yankee fans are hating on Hal and Brian but they're still a club giving you something. They're giving you something.
Don Hahn
You know, every year they're going to build something.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not enough, but relative to most teams in sports, they do great.
Don Hahn
The Mets are still going to be up there too. Their ownership proving that they're all in.
Don McGregor
The jets have to be there because of Woody. So no matter who they bring in, even if you believe in Glenn and Muji is Woody, you don't think jets.
Don Hahn
Are still believing in what they want to see it.
Don McGregor
But, but as long as Woody's there, wouldn't it make you a little nervous?
Don Hahn
Yeah, there's a little feeling of if it goes wrong, I'll believe that over it's going to go right.
Don McGregor
I think Devil fans believe in their, their team. Islander fans. I mean you're an Islander guy. I mean it's Lou, but Lou hasn't. It's been a few years since they made those runs, but I still wouldn't put it the last level of the two football teams. Knicks, you got to be high on them. Nets, I think not. Not terrible.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Don Hahn
Okay so they're really believing in love the coach, where they're headed when it comes to, you know, can they get a high enough draft pick to, you know, to kind of reset this thing.
Don McGregor
Mets, I don't think it's ever been higher. I mean Stearns, how do you, how are you down on Stearns? He's great. So are we forgetting anybody? No, I think we covered, yeah, jets and Giants and then is everybody else. Right. And the Giants I think right now are, are dead last because at least the jets freshened up the coaching staff and the general manager.
Peter Rosenberg
It's for me, I know we got a break, but last thing I'll say on this is when I found out the Debo news this weekend, it just reminded me of like how different it is having Adam Peters here.
Don Hahn
When you have capable leadership, it's so obvious you don't need to be like.
Peter Rosenberg
You can just see it and also how.
Don Hahn
And clearly yours franchise, how quickly does it happen too?
Peter Rosenberg
Because like we spent a lot of time guys going oh, does Joe Douglas have it? Does Joe Shane have it? What I you guys agree this now Adam Peters has now been there one full year. Look at the moves they made last offseason.
Don Hahn
And that's how you see.
Peter Rosenberg
And now the first one, a fifth round pick for Debo, like listen, maybe it won't work out but he didn't take a major risk. The potential upside for Deebo is huge. The risk of you blow a fifth round pick. You don't want to, but it's worth it to take a shot at someone who could change your offense.
Don Hahn
Yeah, we got more of your calls coming up. A lot of conversation to go with you and Peter. You got something for me here too?
Peter Rosenberg

People kill Lars for not being a great drummer. I, I, I'm fine with Lars old. I mean, is he the greatest drummer in the world? He sets the pace for a really heavy band. I've never felt like they were deficient drum wise. But he does get ripped.
Don Hahn
Is it because he gets a lot of attention because of his facial expressions? Like he's a very expressive, big personality kind of drummer.
Don McGregor
I don't know what it is about.
Don Hahn
How he gets ripped. Aren't drummers like really like background, I don't want attention types, right? Oh yeah, usually, Usually they're not like, like out front. Unless of course you're frontman like Phil Collins or somebody like that.
Don McGregor
A lot of them like Tommy Lee, Neil Pert from Rush wouldn't until the last shows that they did, he would never even come out and bow with the rest of the band. He. If you're a drummer, I think you like that solitude of being behind the kit and not really being out there.
Don Hahn
I agree.
Don McGregor
But you know, Lars is certainly somebody that you think of that stands out. I don't know if it's that or whatever. I'm no drum expert Hurt, but I've.
Don Hahn
Always, I think it's more of like the theatrics of in videos when they would show him. He was always just very theatrical with what he was doing. It made it out like as if he was like pouring his heart into everything and maybe overdoing it. But it was entertaining. What's the craziest, like when it comes to the kit and performance that you've ever seen? Because I still think Tommy Lee flipping while.
Don McGregor
Well, yeah, that was still the most incredible attention getter. But yeah, that was pretty incredible flipping around and keeping time, you know. And keep Keith Moon with the explosions throwing the Drums around and all.
Don Hahn
That was a bit much.
Don McGregor
Those are guys that kind of jump to mind.
Don Hahn
Okay, let's continue with the call, shall we? 800 now, a 93776. Felicia in Mississippi.
Don McGregor
Felicia, talk to me.
Peter Rosenberg
Felicia.
Don Hahn
She's got us on mute, I guarantee.
Peter Rosenberg
And then my crooked letter feels so bad. Crooked letter.
Don McGregor
I told you guys.
Don Hahn
Oh, my God.
Alan Hahn
I had you on mute. I'm.
Don McGregor
What's on your mind, New York?
Alan Hahn
Oh, I'm so.
Don Hahn
So.
Bob
So.
Peter Rosenberg
What is it?
Don McGregor
Mi. Crooked eye. Crooked eye eye. Crooked eye. Crooked eye, eye. Hump. I come back, I. Is that what it is?
Alan Hahn
I think the S's are crooked, not the eyes.
Don McGregor
No, it's M. I. Crooked eye. Crooked eye. I.
Peter Rosenberg
Not crooked eye.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. I thought you said crooked eye.
Don McGregor
No, he did.
Peter Rosenberg
He said crooked eye. It's crooked letter.
Alan Hahn
Okay, okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Crooked letter. Crooked letter. You're saying crooked eye. It's not crooked eye. Crooked letter.
Don Hahn
Crooked letter. Humpback.
Don McGregor
Humpback.
Don Hahn
I. Humpback. Humpback.
Peter Rosenberg
Guy I don't know about.
Don McGregor
I don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, I'm getting confused.
Don McGregor
God forbid I ever go there.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, my God.
Don McGregor
I don't have any desire to be there. That's all. I mean, I. I'm sure, Felicia, you'd want to get out of it.
Don Hahn
Let's be honest.
Don McGregor
You call the show. You. You love us, but be honest. It's just us talking here. If given the opportunity, you'd leave in post haste. Right.
Alan Hahn
So I'm going to be. I have horses. I've been in horses my whole life. I have my horses on my property, and I couldn't afford that in New York or New Jersey. There's no. I have eight acres.
Peter Rosenberg
But what if you could.
Alan Hahn
Yes. Now.
Don McGregor
I'm just joking.
Peter Rosenberg
Kidding. A Jazz. Go ahead. All right, what do you got?
Alan Hahn
Felicia, hey, real quick, I wanted to say, Alan, like, I feel so dumb. I should have recognized you were going to be at the Knicks game at the Grizzlies, and I totally would have bought tickets and sung by and said hi, and it didn't dawn on me until Friday, so obviously I couldn't get tickets. But. But, yeah, anyway, we.
Don Hahn
We did talk. It's all good. I did. I did. There was a lot of Nick fans there in that building. I was kind of surprised by that. But, yeah, I was right there. It's all good.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, well, next time. But all. I just wanted to get your opinion on yours, too, Alan, since you're. You are an Islanders fan. So with my heart, I don't want to make any Big moves just because I'm so attached to some of these players like Brock. But in my mind, I really feel like we need, we need to move on from some people. Like we're just stuck in that cycle. And like you mentioned on the show, I think it was Friday. You were talking about how this franchise, like us Islanders fans, like, we're content a lot of times just making the playoffs, squeaking in. But I just feel like that mindset needs to change. And I actually do have confidence in like Ledecky and the ownership. Like back to your previous segment. But. But I'm kind of over Lou. Like, I love Lou. I respect him. I appreciate him bringing us back from having Garth Snow. But I think it's time just to get like some new blood in the organization. And I don't mean his son because I know that's kind of been tossed around, but I just wanted your opinion on what you think the Islanders should do. I really do feel like we should. We should make some moves and, and get. Get younger and just get some new blood in the. In the organization.
Don Hahn
Yeah. There's two ways they can go is just let guys like Nelson and Palmieri walk, right. And then just try to clear up because they're right now with the contracts they have and some of the no move clauses. And Don, the no move clause is what really kills you, right?
Don McGregor
It does kill you.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don Hahn
Gotta clear some money off so you can try to start a reset.
Don McGregor
It's not good enough, Noah.
Don Hahn
Dobson's gotta get paid. Do you really pay him? Do you think he's. Is he that important to you? Because I feel like he's a one side of the ice player and he's not even like he. He's not elite enough on offense for me to get to overlook the. What he doesn't do on the other end of the ice.
Don McGregor
It just. It means making a sacrifice. The devil's made it. The devil said, all right, we're gonna be irrelev a few years. We're going to collect a bunch of draft picks and then we'll eventually get better. Are the Islanders and Ledecky and Malkin willing to do that? Because what they have isn't good enough. It just is not good enough. So how do you get there?
Don Hahn
And while you still have your goalie in his prime.
Don McGregor
Right, but you want to take advantage of that. But as we've seen, you got Shusturkin in his prime and it's still not good enough. You got to be able to build a team in front of A great goaltender. The idea, all you need is a hot goaltender and one goal scorer and you can make a run. Okay, power play. Back in the back when 16 of the 21 teams made the playoffs, now half the teams miss some decent to good teams are going to miss the playoffs this year and the Islanders look like they're going to be one of them. And now what is it? No playoffs this year. Likely last year first round exit. I think the year before, no playoffs. It hasn't been great since those two third round exits.
Don Hahn
Final fours, right?
Don McGregor
It is. You've got to change it because I'm telling you, Washington's not going anywhere. Carolina is a really, really good team. New Jersey's up and coming Rangers are starting to kind of do a facelift where they think they're going to get better as the years go on. This Columbus story is scary good where they lose one of the great players in the game and yet still get better. They're loaded with really good young talent. You just take a look at the landscape, Felicia, and you just say to yourself, how do we get there? And how you get there is to just not keep doubling down on first round exits. And that's, that's a hard pill to swallow when you got a brand new building and you're trying to fill it. But you've got to find a way to start infusing some really good young talent. Now, Barzell screwed him over with the injury. I get it, he's a world class player. But you just can't have one injury derail you like that. They need to just get better.
Don Hahn
I'm going to ask a crazy question here and Felicia, thank you for the call. Always good to talk to you, Don. If someone comes to you about Barzell, do you listen or do you say, no, no, no, we can't, that's, he's too talented, he's our all star. Or do you say if I can get a lot and maybe dump one of the contracts that I can't get rid of, do you do it just to get that hard reset like the reboot that you need?
Don McGregor
Yeah, you got to make those.
Don Hahn
Is he filling seats?
Don McGregor
Those are the pieces that you can redo. I mean a lot. Look at they had, they had Devin Tavis in their organization and they moved him. Right. That decision like that was a very.
Don Hahn
Difficult decision because they had Dobson, they thought, oh, we can move on from.
Don McGregor
So I understand the apprehension of giving away good young talent, but one player is not going to change everything. If you can get picks, if you can get other prospects. You've got to be able to rebuild this. I understood what they were doing. They were close. They should have won the Cup. If they beat Tampa, they beat Montreal, they win a cup. Covid or not, it's a cup.
Don Hahn
I agree.
Don McGregor
And that opportunity was missed. And since then, they are so distant from that now it's over. I'm like, could they make the playoffs?
Peter Rosenberg
Sure.
Don McGregor
Could they go on a little bit of a run here? But they're never going to be an elite team of the Eastern Conference doing it the way they're doing it until they can swallow that pill and make the moves to get younger, get faster, become what you need to be in this game. Everybody wants to play well defensively, but you take a look at the teams that are good. They're flying. Speed, the ability to score goals. Right? And you've got the goaltender. I get. But you know, what good's the goaltender if you don't have the guys up front to get the job done?
Don Hahn
And they're hosting the All Star. Right. This year.
Don McGregor
So the guy coming up. Yeah.
Don Hahn
It's almost like you don't want to be a terrible team hosting. Like, there's a lot there with ownership that they're afraid to make that reboot that might cost you a year where nobody's going to games and it kind of turns into, you know, the forgotten franchise.
Don McGregor
Because that can happen.
Don Hahn
I get it.
Don McGregor
But what I would tell. Listen, I did have Ledecky's ear. He doesn't ask me. And Malkin's got. They've got the majority of the team. You probably would have to talk to him is to say, listen, I've been in this market. I've covered hockey for 30 years. All right? I've been through and seen this Islander team being completely irrelevant. Flying commercial being an embarrassing organization.
Don Hahn
I covered that team.
Don McGregor
Right? Embarrassing. It wasn't even. It was NHL ajs.
Don Hahn
All right, Don. They were flying southwest with those little cards in the B group.
Don McGregor
No.
Don Hahn
And they were trying to trade with a group by saying, I'll sign something. And they had so little talent on the team. People in the able group were like, sign something. Who are you? I don't know who you are.
Don McGregor
I know. It was so bad. And yet when we started this radio station back in 2001, one of the first things Tim McCarthy. Did we sign the Islanders? And what did the islanders do in 02? Went to game seven against Toronto. Three straight years making the playoffs. Guess what? They all came back. Islander fans are passionate. And I'm not going to sit there and watch, watch a team be embarrassing. But if you let them in on the rebuild, you let them know what you're doing. I'm telling you, they're going to come back. Now, the building may not be full. I get it. But when this team finally turns the corner, they will be there. They might be dormant for a while. They're passionate. Islander fans have been through a lot. But the one thing I don't think they want to be through is some kind of partial. We're trying to sneak in half pregnant. They want to know where they're going, get the right people in there. I'm telling you, they might not show up right away, but they are not going anywhere. You're not going to lose those fans. They've been through too much.
Don Hahn
You know what they need? They need the process, what the Sixers did. That's what they need to do that. Because, you know, fan bases, they get all behind that kind of stuff. Jeremy in Jersey City. Hey, Jeremy.
Jeremy
Hey, guys. Thanks for taking the call.
Don Hahn
You got it.
Jeremy
I was leaving work and I just tuned in. I heard you guys talking about Pete Rose, and I gotta say, you know, the Baseball Riders of America don't know everything. I think the easiest way that they could have solved this problem with Pete Rose was if he did all of this betting that he's alleged to do as a manager, then you just don't induct him as a manager. You induct him as a player.
Don Hahn
I've always wondered this, Jeremy. I used to. I used to think that all the time, like what he did as a player, like, from what we know, didn't bet. Like this was him as a manager betting on stuff. And we all understand that, but his playing career is still his playing career. And Don, so. And by the way, Jeremy, you're wrong. The Baseball Writers of America, they know everything. Just ask them.
Don McGregor
But they're not even. But they're not given the opportunity to vote. He's not on the ballot because the hall of Fame won't let him because he's been banned.
Don Hahn
So. But do you. Does that make sense, what Jeremy said? Because I've always wondered that why can't he just be inducted as. As a. For his playing career? Because that's really what you're celebrating. You're not celebrating the. What he did as a manager, but. Right.
Don McGregor
It sound like. I know you're right, but he's banned baseball. But yeah, listen, he was also player manager when a lot of this stuff.
Don Hahn
Was going on too. I Guess.
Don McGregor
And I'm sure he was betting while he played as well, but whatever. Again. So he's banned from baseball, so we're going to pretend all the things he did didn't happen.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, that's what's so stupid about it. By the way, did you see this? Anthony sent us a picture, a post from Jalen Brunson, who said something special coming soon and posted one of their roommate show pictures with the man standing with them. Appears to be their next guest. James Dolan gonna be a guest on the roommate show?
Don Hahn
That's a get. I think the last time he appeared was on your show.
Peter Rosenberg
Probably a case show vehicle. At least that he did a sit down. No, he may have. I think he went on with Carton at some point afterwards, if I'm being honest. I think he did.
Don Hahn
Oh, okay.
Don McGregor
I don't remember. Even though I think. I think you're right. Very few. But that tells you the players must like them.
Peter Rosenberg
They would otherwise, no basketball talk. Brunson and Hard are just huge fans of his band. That's all. They just. They just want to talk about the music.
Don Hahn
Well, it's not live as we know it. It's a recorded podcast. There's me a lot of nervous nellies all around watching this whole thing, but this will be. This will get some hits.
Don McGregor
The idea that nobody wants to play for the next Alan because Dolan was so bad. Yeah, I think.
Don Hahn
How's that looking now? It's amazing. Winning is the best deodorant, isn't it?
Don McGregor
Listen, all these owners are the same.
Don Hahn
Just hire the right people and that happened finally.
Peter Rosenberg
Listen, they have different. There are different versions of them and some are more thin skinned than others. So like, listen, you know, you guys both work at MSG as the guy who doesn't. Not that you wouldn't say this anyway, but it is a little more awkward. Dolan has had his moments of things that you. What are you doing? Like the cameras being able to see who walks into the building and if anyone's ever wronged them, they're not allowed.
Don Hahn
You know, that's not the only arena in the league that has that stuff, right? Facial recognition and everything. That's a very common thing.
Peter Rosenberg
But there were people who worked for law firms that had stuff against them who were not allowed. Stuff that was out there. I'm just saying. Not saying it was true. I'm saying stuff that's out there.
Don Hahn
You mean access to grind.
Peter Rosenberg
And by the way, it all. Well, it felt like there are certain owners that are tougher than others. But to your point, Don, they are mostly they're rich guys. A lot of them are tough business people. They're not going to be your best buddy. But if they put together a team and let people do their job, it's fine. And right now, as we always pointed out with Dolan, if he was as bad as Snyder was, or respectfully these days, Woody was, then the Rangers wouldn't have been successful. But the Rangers didn't have those problems. So obviously there was something else happening within the basketball operation operations that you.
Don Hahn
Hired and having those people and getting.
Don McGregor
My point Right, right, right. Being an owner isn't necessarily a skill set. All right? You're not hired and fired. You just happen to have the money to buy a team. So it really comes down to two things. Do you get involved or not involved and do you hire the right people? That's really comes down to. And sometimes it's very fluid because there was a time John Mara hired the right people. He hasn't recently and now the team has sunk. And he's also been known to get involved. Not as fat hands as Woody. But John Mara I think had a lot to do with Saquon not being traded. I think he had a lot to do with constantly doubling down to try to get Eli another championships. We've seen that. But if you own a team, this is not a skill set. It's just I happen to have billions of dollars.
Don Hahn
Just think about the great commercial opportunity if you had Woody Johnson do an indeed commercial where like they show the record that he's had over the last couple of years and somebody says you need indeed, indeed and indeed I do. You're not good at hiring. Let us help you hire.
Don McGregor
Perfect. The perfect example with an X is that he finally seemed to get it right with Leon Rose and now things have turned around. Isaiah Thomas not so much.

Peter Rosenberg
Well, they put it. Especially when he tries to put it on the beat and it's not on beat. That's. I mean it was almost on beat, but it wasn't.
Don McGregor
I. I find it's really a triumph for hip hop and for. For them. They've announced their last tour.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't believe them, by the way.
Don McGregor
Well, you never believe any of these bands. I mean, I remember the who had their last tour in 82 and how many. Two members are gone and they still find a way to still play. But random way. I'm watching the news, okay, Channel 7 news. And it's a story on the news that Wu Tang is gonna have their last tour. And I.
Peter Rosenberg
Which is why it was a smart plan.
Don McGregor
And I was saying to Nancy, I said, you know, that. That really it's a triumph for music because it's almost. Have they heard any of these songs? You know, like. And again, I'm not for censorship or anything, but you wouldn't think that this would make the news. You would think this is the stuff that they wouldn't want to say on the news. News. I think we've come a long way.
Peter Rosenberg
We have. Well, and also remember the people now who are the age, the people that are on the news grew up on Wu Tang as well.
Don McGregor
Well, you would have to say growing up on Wu Tang is a little different than, you know, growing up on, you know, Run dmc.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, it is. But like, but by the way, but Wu Tang's not like given to where music is gone. Wu Tang's not that hardcore. It just has cursing in it. Really. Their themes aren't. No, I mean, Ghostface has his moments on solo stuff, but like a lot of storytelling. But yeah, most of it.
Don Hahn
And silly stuff.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, most of it, Don, I think is just cursed. I don't consider Wu Tang to be like. I would play Wu Tang for Maya for sure.
Don McGregor
Not every song.
Peter Rosenberg
No, not every song is for the children. And you have to remember that. That's the important part. They are for the children.
Don McGregor
So once I was just happy, you know, Once all day.
Peter Rosenberg
Already said that. You know the truth and it's happy birthday, Method man today, by the way.
Don McGregor
I would say.
Don Hahn
Oh, man. 52.
Don McGregor
I was gonna say 52.
Peter Rosenberg
I'll go 51. What's the answer, Jacob?
Don Hahn
The answer is give me a drum roll, somebody.
Peter Rosenberg
Because he needs to type in return and chat. GBT 54. 54.
Don Hahn
Oh, he's my age.
Peter Rosenberg
He looks great.
Don Hahn
Wow. 71. I love it.
Peter Rosenberg
Method Man's your age, huh?
Don Hahn
I'm not yet though. My birthday's not till June, so. Cap older than me.
Peter Rosenberg
Happy birthday. Meth. I'm gonna hit him up right now.
Don Hahn
The. You remember name drop.
Peter Rosenberg
Hit the button.
Don Hahn
One of the great. One of the great moments in jets, of course recent history is hard knocks from two off seasons ago.
Don McGregor
Right.
Don Hahn
You remember when he gathered the team around and he said that. That little speech about cheating the man in the glass?
Peter Rosenberg
Very much so. That's like memorized it word for word.
Don Hahn
That was. You did?
Peter Rosenberg
No, I thought he did. I thought it was a memorized from him.
Don Hahn
Yeah, I actually saved it on my phone. I love it that much.
Peter Rosenberg
It was really great.
Don Hahn
I can't. I can't remember it word for word now, but it's probably the peak of the Aaron Rodgers era right there.
Peter Rosenberg
Yep.
Don Hahn
It didn't get better than that.
Peter Rosenberg
Q Tip and Method man went out that year and Q Tip was so excited about Rogers.
Don Hahn
I mean, how could it not be this.
Peter Rosenberg
This last?
Don Hahn
Are we wrong to have had that moment of this is awesome?
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Don Hahn
Were we that naive? Because I know Giants fans now are. Are, you know, like we all got mocked for being excited about Aaron Rodgers, then got the I told you so.
Peter Rosenberg
No, you had every right.
Don Hahn
Don.
Don McGregor
When he came out in with the. On a 911 with the American flag. American flag.
Don Hahn
Well, that's it. That was.
Don McGregor
That was it. Right?
Don Hahn
That was full stage staff. Full staff in that moment.
Don McGregor
Because even when he played well, I. I guess he played well in the. In at times in the San Francisco game on opening day this year. But did it get any better than that?
Don Hahn
That was. Like I said, that was that. That's it. That's full staff. Here's what he said. You can fool the whole world down the highway of years and take pats on the back as you pass, but your final reward will be heartache and tears if you cheat the man. Man in the glass said that to the team. Then they went on to cheat the man in the glass.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, the glass broke. Glass shattered. By the way, I'm getting a little bit of hate from Cleveland town. Cleveland, because on Levitar today, they asked me about. About the basketball. And I said, cleveland came up and I said, I'll give you guys a top. I said, if Cleveland wins the championship this year, name me the last time a team that unsexy won a championship.
Don Hahn
Detroit Pistons, 2004.
Don McGregor
Yeah, that's always what everybody goes to.
Peter Rosenberg
So a radio. It looks like a radio guy.
Don Hahn
What's the name? Is it Anthony Lima? Oh, no.
Peter Rosenberg
From Cleveland. 92.3 the fan. So one of us, a sports fan, a sports yo, yo, like us in Cleveland reposted it that I said that. But, like, what do you want me to say? I meant it. It's no insult. I love the Cleveland story. That's not a sexy TV for national tv.
Don Hahn
And here's the worst part. They think you're like, they think I'm.
Peter Rosenberg
A New York guy.
Don Hahn
This New York guy thinks the Knicks can beat us. And meanwhile, you're a Celtics fan, by the way.
Peter Rosenberg
I said that clearly on the show because they were talking about the Heat Knicks game yesterday and LeBatard was, of course, sounding sad about the Knicks. I mean, about the Heat. And I started smiling and I said, no, just to be clear, I'm not a Knicks fan. I'm a Celtics fan. I'm just smiling because I think any fan in basketball who's not a Heat fan gets a little happy to finally see the Heat down bad a bit. They've been good. The Heat have basically become, over the last 20 years, like the San Francisco 49ers. They are always good. Like, they are just there every. They'll randomly pop up in a final for no reason. Like, they are just there.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So, like, yeah, am I enjoying that? They're down for five minutes because you know they're going to add Spoelstra. They're going to add one piece and be right back.
Don Hahn
Giannis will go there next year.
Peter Rosenberg
And then all of a sudden, it's the Eastern Conference.
Don McGregor
It's not good enough to be the best team in basketball. They also want the world to think they're sexy, too.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, like, who cares?
Don McGregor
You got a chance to win a championship. We're not going to rate championships on sexiness.
Peter Rosenberg
And by the way.
Don Hahn
No, but you know what?
Peter Rosenberg
Everybody will be my Celtics on Friday.
Don Hahn
Everybody will. Everybody will do this whole thing about how. Oh, for the NBA. This is terrible. Oh, the rating. You know how we are.
Don McGregor
Listen, I went through growing up as a Devil fan. Oh, he's killing the sports left.
Don Hahn
It's true.
Don McGregor
But did I want to take, you know, give back the championships?
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Don McGregor
Here's how you do it. Giants, all they do is run on the ball back in. Back in 1990. Boring. By the way.
Peter Rosenberg
You know what?
Don McGregor
I'll take my Super Bowl.
Peter Rosenberg
There are worse things in the world than an entire league which is not made up of marquee markets believing that their team can also win. Like, is it the worst thing in the world of a team not called the Chiefs or Eagles win a Super Bowl?
Don Hahn
I don't have to chase a superstar and have like a mega team to have a chance to win. I think every now and then in a league, you got to have that team win a championship. I do think it's. You're right. As much as. Of course, it does make me throw up in my mouth.
Peter Rosenberg
No, listen, we'll see if it ends up being Cleveland. I think that from a basketball fan standpoint, on the other side at least. And let's just remove the Knicks for a second. The west is going to be fascinating no matter what. A lot of stories, but we'll see. We'll see if the Knicks can get past the Celtics or. Or Cleveland. They'll have to do one of them.
Don Hahn
But 6:00 hour more. Your calls coming up at first, Peter.
Peter Rosenberg

In the "Hour 3: NY Clutch" episode of the Don, Hahn & Rosenberg podcast, hosts Alan Hahn, Peter Rosenberg, and Don McGregor delve deep into the vibrant world of New York sports, delivering insightful analysis, spirited debates, and engaging conversations. This summary encapsulates the key discussions, notable quotes, and the dynamic interplay between the hosts and their listeners.
The episode kicks off with Alan Hahn highlighting the New York Knicks' impressive turnaround after a disappointing weekend. He remarks, "The Knicks followed up a bad weekend with really good performances, including comeback wins and clutch plays from Brunson, Mitchell, and Robins." (00:36). Hahn emphasizes the positive signs for March, anticipating more thrilling performances as the season progresses.
Transitioning to college basketball, Hahn celebrates St. John's securing the regular-season Big East championship. He paints a vivid picture of the celebrations, "Confetti trophies at Madison Square Garden... Big celebration as we approach the Big East tournament." (01:45), underscoring the team's momentum heading into the conference tournament.
A significant portion of the discussion centers around the New York Yankees grappling with injuries to key players like DJ LeMahieu and Luis Heal. Hahn details, "Luis Heal got an MRI for a lat strain, making him a no-throw for six weeks." (02:16), highlighting the challenges the team faces as they navigate their high payroll and roster adjustments. Matt, a caller, adds depth to the conversation by questioning the Yankees' decision-making, "Why is DJ their first option at third base despite defensive concerns?" (03:14).
Don McGregor steers the conversation towards clutch performances in sports, particularly spotlighting Knicks' Brunson. Hahn lauds Brunson's consistency, stating, "Brunson is the NBA's top scorer in clutch moments and highest efficiency shooter in clutch situations." (07:01). The hosts compare Brunson to legendary figures like Carmelo Anthony and Patrick Ewing, ultimately positioning him alongside others like Jamal Crawford for his reliability in high-pressure games.
Engaging with listeners, the hosts field questions about the Yankees' third base strategy. Matt (03:03) debates the decision to stick with DJ LeMahieu, suggesting concerns about his defensive prowess. The discussion evolves into broader implications of payroll management and the necessity for the Yankees to balance talent with financial sustainability.
Shifting gears, Jeremy, another caller, sparks a light-hearted segment on hip hop music. He shares his favorites, "Souls of Mischief - 93 and Lost Boys - Renee," prompting Peter Rosenberg to extol their merits. Peter adds, "Both are fantastic hip hop songs that resonate deeply with fans." (12:19), showcasing the hosts' versatility in bridging sports with cultural conversations.
The discussion expands to encompass other New York teams, including the Giants, Jets, Devils, and Islanders. Hahn and McGregor dissect the Giants' struggles, expressing skepticism about their future prospects without significant roster overhauls. McGregor asserts, "You can't keep doubling down on first-round exits without infusing young talent." (37:17), emphasizing the need for strategic rebuilding.
Conversely, the Jets receive mixed reviews. McGregor contemplates possible moves, saying, "Listen, we're done with the season... They might bring in Rodgers to give fans something to cheer about." (20:03), highlighting the anticipation surrounding quarterback acquisitions.
Alan Hahn brings attention to the New York Islanders' predicament, urging a reset to foster future success. He argues, "The Islanders need to infuse young talent and move on from certain veterans to avoid becoming irrelevant." (33:29). The hosts discuss the delicate balance between maintaining fan loyalty and making tough decisions for long-term gains.
The conversation touches upon the longstanding Pete Rose controversy. Jeremy questions the Hall of Fame's stance, "Why can't Pete Rose be inducted as a player if his managerial bets were the issue?" (39:17). The hosts dissect the complexities of Rose's legacy, ultimately defending the Hall of Fame's decision to uphold his ban, stating, "He's not on the ballot because the Hall of Fame won't let him in due to his ban." (40:11).
As the episode nears its conclusion, the hosts engage in playful banter about iconic drummers and the theatrics of live performances.
