Don Hahn
Nothing better than that. And also too, those who talk about the quality of the. You know, there's some people that don't really like the AM sound. I've heard that from people. Ah, you know, like. Well, then listen on the app because, by the way, crystal clear.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
You know what I mean? Exactly. So we solved all your problems here. All of them again, 800-919-3776. You only have two lines open, so you want to get them, get on it. Now we've got a bunch of calls to get to, but just to res the topic of the day that we are discussing, among other things, of course. So now that Aaron Glenn is in as the head coach of the jets, something that we are learning is what if I told you Bill Parcells not only has A rooting interest in this because of his affinity for Aaron Glenn. He coached him, he's worked with him, he knows him well, but also that he wants to make sure he succeeds. And so if you have Bill Parcells now as part of, again, not saying he's coming in and working for the jets, that's not what it is. But if you're getting that type of support, somebody of his level and you know that he's going to make sure we're going to make sure this guy succeeds, that he's not going to be out by himself. He's never been a head coach before and he's shown up in New York and he's got to figure it out on his own. No, he's got the support of a strong network of parcels, people that are going to help him out. Does that give you a little more, a little more feeling of positivity or at least confidence in this hire? It does for me.
Alan Rosenberg
It doesn't for me for a bunch of reasons and I mentioned it earlier in the show, and I'll repeat them, that you're still talking about an inexperienced head coach that is going to be there on the sidelines, having to make in game decisions that are going to be huge for this organization and dealing with the media and all the things that you didn't have to worry about as a defensive coordinator. Now, Bill Parcells is going to be a great sounding board. He's going to probably and it seems like help you build a staff, which is going to be very important. I talked to Mike Westhoff a couple of hours ago who's helping out with that process and is going to help Aaron once the training camp starts, help out with the special teams and help whoever the special teams coach is. He's not going to come back and coach, but he's going to be a help.
Don Hahn
Well, there you go. That's another name.
Alan Rosenberg
And I asked him, I said, you know, do you like to hire? And he said, yeah, I do. Let's see what his staff looks like. So Bill Parcell's helping him with the staff is definitely going to be huge. But having to be a head coach and never been a head coach before, the scrutiny that comes with New York, scrutiny coming from the fact that the jets haven't won in almost 60 years and haven't been to the playoffs since 2010, a lot of pressure comes with that. And I've seen a lot of guys who thought they were ready for the job. You know, it's always so easy to say, well, Robert Sala this and Adam Gase that. Listen, I've been on this radio station since 2001. I've been working in sports radio since 96. I've been working in sports since 92. So I've been around like every hire, Every hire the jets have made. This is finally the hire. Oh, they brought in Robert Sala. Oh, listen, he's gonna be great. He doesn't take any BS from anybody. All gas, no break. Just see him on the sidelines, how engaged he was. The players are gonna want to play for him. They're gonna te hearts out of their chest for Robert Sala. And then he became the head coach, and all of a sudden there wasn't running up and down the sidelines and things weren't all wine and roses. Because you know what? Being a head coach is different than being a defensive coordinator. Adam Gase. Oh, it's easy to joke about what an idiot he was and didn't know what he was doing. Well, at the time we were saying, well, Peyton Manning recommended him and, you know, he was in Miami and has some experience as a head coach, and that turned out to be an absolute disaster. Eric Mangini. Of course Eric Mangini is going to work. He. He learned at the knee of Bill Belichick, the greatest coach of all time, and then he ended up having a really good first season, went to the playoffs, and that fizzled out and died. So everybody comes in with optimism. Everybody comes in working real hard and all that. Everybody was a sounding board. Everybody. Mike Manning called me. Everybody came from a great coaching tree. But you don't know until he starts to go out there and do it. And when you're fourth and one from your own 45 yard line, down three with two minutes to go, and you got to call a play or you got to call a timeout, you know, Bill Parcells isn't going to be tapping on the shoulder saying, hey, Aaron, do this. He's going to have to do it on his own. And that, to me, it's all great prep, but the inexperience, I'm still very, very concerned about that. Sorry.
Don Hahn
Now there's another element to this, as is going to be. There's a lot of layers to this and decisions to be made going forward again, defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator. You know, we are hearing that they're going to be leaning towards experience. You know, people that either have been a head coach before or have been, you know, coordinators before, not new people. So you have that. You mentioned Westhoff. There's a Guy who's got tons of experience and very successful. And even if he's not going to be special teams coordinator, if he's just around to help, it's still a value to have a guy like him. But there's also a. And I said this is the most important decision to be made going forward, and that is Aaron Rodgers. The other Aaron. And what do you do going forward? We had assumed that the easy thing to do is just keep Aaron Rodgers because you don't. When you don't have a quarterback, you're in big trouble in this league and it's harder to find one. And if you have one, whether you like him or not, at least you know Aaron Rodgers finished the season strong. Maybe you can get something out of him. But as I think about it, especially if I mention parcel's influence and Aaron Glenn is a new head coach, you want to remove anything that could undermine, impede, anything that would take away from his ability to make sure that everybody knew I'm in charge here. And so if I said to you that perhaps the thing that the jets are going to do if I'm reading tea leaves is they are going to move on from Aaron Rodgers. And if you wanted to make sure that another priority that you have is let's not forget that there were some stories about Garrett Wilson not being enthralled with the jets and there's some thoughts that he didn't want to be here anymore. I would want to prioritize making sure that Garrett Wilson's here for a long time. And so those are a lot of decisions you have to make. And Rogers at the middle of all of that. So could you go forward and say the right thing to do probably is to move on from Aaron Rodgers and this next era becomes more about Aaron Glenn and not Aaron Rodgers?
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah. Or do you just. Do you show how commanding you are that I'm able to handle this situation. I'm going to get him on the straight narrow, get the best out of him because he gives us the best chance to win.
Don Hahn
If I told you you had a choice, let's just hypothetically, Rogers or Garrett Wilson. You can't have both.
Alan Rosenberg
Like one or the other. Well, obviously you'd want Garrett Wilson. He's younger. I think quarterback's more important than wide receiver. But what am I getting Rogers for one more year? I mean, Garrett Wilson can be a guy here that could be here for the next decade making plays and helping.
Don Hahn
Receiver for a while.
Alan Rosenberg
Garrett Wilson. But. But you come in here if you're Aaron Glenn say, guys, we can go to Wilson and say, I understand you're upset, but it's a new regime. Let's make it work, man. We're going to make this work. You know, suck it up for a year. Rogers is going to be gone after the season, man. We're going to go out and get another quarterback. You're going to be a part of everything. But we got a chance here to make this work with Aaron Rodgers. Trust me. I believe Rodgers is our best hope. I think the better question is Aaron Rodgers or Sam Darnold? I mean, are you really? If you're looking to go out and sign now, it's a lot of money. It's going to cost well north of $40 million, maybe even 50, who knows? Do you want to go back there? What's the alternative? Taron Rodgers, are you going to give Tyrod Taylor a contract? Are you going to go out and kick the tires on Kirk Cousins? Justin Fields, what are you going to do at quarterback if Aaron Rodgers is not your quarterback in 25?
Don Hahn
I'm not going to bother with Kirk Cousins because he made it clear him and his wife, they had no interest in playing in New York to begin with. So why bother even going down that road? Jameis Winston, I'm all set. Because, you know, that's a. Jameis Winston's a guy that you love watching when he's not on your team, but you really don't want him on your team. Like, as a fan, like, he's a great guy. Everybody loves him. He's a great personality. But it's just the turnovers at this point in his career, he's never gotten over it. That's just what you're going to get. And I don't know if you really can go through that for a year, so. And then Fields. Fields feels like you're still kind of developing, rebuilding. That leaves me with Sam Darnold and this new regime that now can say, well, we're not the ones that moved on from. You know, you could say, well, you're bringing him back. I'm not bringing him back. I'm bringing him in. That's somebody else's guy that they moved on from. And that was a Joe Douglas. He really struggled with that decision. What do I do? I got the number two pick in the draft. There's a bunch of quarterbacks in this draft. Do I keep Sam and have to pay him? And maybe I'm. Maybe I miss out on getting a quarterback that could be a franchise guy. Then they took Zach Wilson and realized we made a big mistake. So right the wrong. The 40 million he's gonna get and change is gonna be middle of the pack in the NFL. Whether you like it or not. That's a reality. And you've seen him in Minnesota show you the ability to be. He was a renaissance man there. And it wasn't just smoke and mirrors and it wasn't all Koch.
Alan Rosenberg
You know what it was?
Don Hahn
That's a guy that walked in that locker room. You saw those videos. They loved him.
Alan Rosenberg
Yes.
Don Hahn
Like, there was something about him in the huddle and everything else that clearly goes beyond what he was doing with the football. This was not a novelty act. They legit looked at him and saw him as a leader and they really rallied behind him. So does he have that ability? Can you bring him into New York? Can you have that new coaching staff, new front office? This is new. This is not the team you had when you were here before. This is a fresh start in the same uniform. I think it's worth a try.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, I think so, too. Now, when you look at another quarterback that I don't hear really mentioned much, but he might spring free.
Don Hahn
Who's.
Alan Rosenberg
This is Matthew Stafford.
Don Hahn
Wow.
Alan Rosenberg
36 years old, but still looks like he's got a lot left. I don't know why the Rams would part, but I think there is an out.
Don Hahn
Is it just financially?
Alan Rosenberg
He's got two years left on his contract, but something worked out that he's got, you know, one year, $40 million in 2024 that I think they can. They can get out. They. And Stafford hasn't decided what he wants to do. Again, it's a. I'm just bringing. I'm saying if. Because he's not technically free yet, but if it turned out that the Rams decided to go in another direction, I.
Don Hahn
Mean, it could cost you something.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, it's going to cost you a lot. I mean, he's going to be. I got to see his age because I know he's. I know he's 36 now, but I don't know when he turns. His birthday's February 7th, so he will turn. He will turn 37.
Don Hahn
Well, he's still. We saw. He's still got plenty left.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
I mean, in snow globe, he's still zipping it.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah. I don't blame the loss on him.
Don Hahn
No.
Alan Rosenberg
You know, he's won a Super Bowl. He might not come here just because, listen, I got out of Detroit because they never won, you know, so again, I'm just saying that it might not Just be the names that we mentioned that Matthew Stafford might spring loose. I'm not saying that it would happen or not.
Don Hahn
That's interesting, though.
Alan Rosenberg
But you do have options. But Aaron Rodgers, I still think is a viable option. But it's only one year, most likely, and it does come with some baggage. But, boy, what a great way to show your fan base and the players on the team if you're able to corral this guy. And I. And I think that. Rod.
Don Hahn
Can you take that realize, though, can you take the. He could. He could get. He could play. He could be an absolute boy scout. He could be an absolute boy scout. The first day, hands folded on the desk, right? The good student brought the apple. Put it on the desk. Everything you want. Oh, Coach Glenn. He'll call him Coach Glenn. All that stuff. He'll talk about how he respects him because he had a great career. He played in the league. He understands it and players get it and players understand it. I never played for a player before and all that stuff, right? And then the minute things go, you know, I don't really agree with this. And we have seen that he can pull the rug out right in the midst of. You think he's a boy. He. Because I thought this last year, like, he was. It was Camelot. There was nothing better. Rogers was pitch perfect with everything he said. The lonely Lombardi and all that stuff. I fell for it.
Alan Rosenberg
But because he saw that he had a really long leash. Aaron Rodgers is really intelligent. I think the whole Egypt thing was to test how much leash do I have. And then he realized I really could do whatever I want. You lay the groundwork down, say, hey, Aaron, the McAfee say goodbye. You're not doing that anymore. You're about football. All about. You were the one that said it yourself that it's gotta be all about football. We can't have any more leaks, so there's no reason for you to go on. McAfee say goodbye. I'll do it for you. I'll call him up. And it's all about football. Because this is your last chance, baby. You want to be on that. That. That rung of multiple super bowl winners? You gotta look at the talent here. Where are you going? And if you can't do that, you could always retire, walk away. You're going to the hall of Fame, baby. You don't have to worry about it. But if you want to play football, you're playing for me and you're playing under my rules. Because I got to make this work. I am not going to have my future as a head coach derailed by you. So this is the way it is. You're coming to the optional minicamps. You're coming to everything. You are going to be my quarter. And if you don't want to do that, then there's the door. And I think if you lay that groundwork and if I'm Aaron Rodgers, I look at it and go, yeah, this is my last opportunity. This is my last kick at the can here to make this work. Look at the talent this team has. We finally looks like we have a coach that knows what he's doing here. They're committed to him. Looks like we got a staff you're mentioning now. You want to talk about how maybe Bill Parcell is going to have an influence. Hey, you know, he's got Bill Parcells on speed dial. You know, maybe I could build a relationship with Bill. Maybe I get. Maybe Bill talks to him. Whatever. I think Rogers would play ball that can establish a nice relationship moving forward. And that's the test to see that sets the tone. And if he can do that, well, now, if I get. I got Wilson on board, I get Rogers on board, everybody else should be able to fall in line, and that could be a very interesting test. And again, the option is, Aaron, if this doesn't suit you, you've had a great career, go out, retire. But we're not letting you go. We're not trading you. Let's make this work. Why would Rogers push back? Is the McAfee interviews that important? Is making those statements that important? You see how fragile the organization is. You see how fragile everything is. Why would he waste what he's gonna be 42 in December, Alan, how many more chances are he gonna get.
Don Hahn
This is it. And I think he knows it. And that's, again, that's why this conversation is gonna be very like this, isn't it? There's so much business to get to just even before you start talking about draft and free agency and everything else. Now, you mentioned Matthew Stafford. Here's Sean McVay talking about Stafford's future with the Rams.
Sean McVay
We'll talk about all those things at the appropriate time. I know he's playing really good football. Obviously, I love him, love working with him. What he's meant to our football team has been immeasurable in a positive way. So what we'll do is we'll continue to look at. You know, the quarterback is always the first thing in mind as it relates to how you move forward with the team. I think he's playing really good football. And like I said, when we get back, we'll talk about all those types of things, but I'm sure proud of the body of work, really proud of the way that he's played. And I think the coolest thing you can say about Matthew Gary is he shines the brightest on the biggest stages. And when you look at the seven playoff games that he's played in since he's been a Ram, he certainly gives you a chance every time you step out on the field. And, you know, for that I'm sure appreciative.
Don Hahn
I mean, that does not sound like a full commitment.
Alan Rosenberg
No, it doesn't sound like it's a lock. He's coming back.
Don Hahn
Right. So what you're suggesting now keep in mind too, Nick Caley is the passing game coordinator on the Rams, a tight ends coach as well. That's a name that's been circulating about like another, a guy who could be an offensive coordinator in the waiting.
Alan Rosenberg
Okay.
Don Hahn
And if you want to, you know, make connections, he spent six years with Bill Belichick in New England. Just saying.
Alan Rosenberg
Okay, Right. So if he ends up being Stafford.
Don Hahn
Is, you know, if you do Stafford and then him, you know, that's something also that's interesting. Now, again, this is all hypothetical, everybody. We're not suggesting this is happening, but you just try to connect dots and there's one to connect with.
Alan Rosenberg
But all we're trying to do is whether you're for Rogers or against Rogers, you have to weigh your options. So if you are somebody like Keyshawn Johnson on Tuesday comes on our air and says, I wouldn't bring Rogers back.
Don Hahn
Right.
Alan Rosenberg
All right, then what are you doing? So what are the list of quarterbacks? They're going to be your quarterback in 2025 for your rookie head coach. And I think Rogers is a viable option compared to the guys we just mentioned. And we're just throwing another one on the hopper because he's not locked into coming back to the Rams.
Don Hahn
You just heard the coach basically suggested.
Alan Rosenberg
That again, he's 37, but we're talking about a guy in Aaron Rodgers who's going to turn 42 playoffs.
Don Hahn
He's still getting younger at quarterback. What's the difference? 800 now at 93776. Man, we got a lot of calls, Donnie. Let's just get through as many as we can here. Nick is in Smithtown. Hey, Nick. Oh, hey.
Nick
What's up, Don and Alan? So first off, I want to say that I love the Aaron Glenn hire, but every Article I see now is how he's our new messiah is going to fix this mess. And I can't just take that sliver of hope because the media outlet puts out like, you know, positive stuff about the jets and then the season starts and it flows in my face and then it's the same old Jet.
Don Hahn
Well, that's. That's the life of a Jets fan, Nick. That's the problem is that year after year you have hope that things will change. And I've used this a lot during the midday shows. Not sure if it's heard much on Afternoon Drive, so I'll introduce it here. Don, I don't know if you've heard me say this, but I'm a big Snoopy. Peanuts. I love that cartoon. It's one of my favorites. I grew up with it and I think I liken being a Jets fan to this scene where Lucy holds the football and tells Charlie Brown to come kick it.
Alan Rosenberg
Right.
Don Hahn
And the minute Charlie Brown gets to the ball to kick it, she pulls it away and he falls flat on his back. And then what happens? In recurring cartoons, she does the same thing. Charlie Brown puts the ball down and he's like, this time I'm gonna kick it to the moon. And he runs as fast as he can. She promises she's not gonna pull it away, but guess what? Pulls it away flat on his back. He falls for it every time. That's the life of a Jets fan.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
And every now and then you're just hoping for once, just let Charlie Brown kick the damn football.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
And that's what you are asking.
Alan Rosenberg
Find the right guy. They have not. If you want to say Rex was the right guy, you played in back to back championship games. But. But if you're judging it on Super Bowls, they have not gotten it right since we buback. That was in January of 1969 when they won that Super Bowl.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Alan Rosenberg
The majority of people listening right now were not alive for that or don't remember that. Including the two of us.
Don Hahn
Yes.
Alan Rosenberg
So they haven't gotten it right. And every hire Allen, we hear, this is it. This is finally it. So this one's a little different because he's a former Jet. He was a leader when he was a Jet. The jets played well while he was a Jet. And it seems like he's got the backing of Bill Parcells, but other than that it's kind of not that much different. Robert Salano had coaching experience, right? Adam Gay, some, but not a tremendous amount of success. He was an offensive guy. You Know, you go back over the years, Alan, even the ones that kind of worked, like Herman Edwards and Eric Mangini, they were first time head coaches. And you ask yourself the question, why is that? Is that because Woody Johnson doesn't want someone that's going to be authoritative figure with a lot of history and push back on him? If that's the case, then why would Aaron Glenn be any different than anybody else that we've had? If a Fisher Ott's from the head, if Woody's going to get his fat hands in there. That's why I'm dubious about the Bill Parcell stuff. Because one thing, Bill wasn't here for Woody before, right? So listen, he knew how to deal with Jerry Jones, so he knows how to deal with a meddling owner. But you know, Jerry Jones knew football. He was the general manager of the team. Or is now Woody Johnson is just some guy that happens to be a billionaire that owns the team. But he thinks he knows.
Don Hahn
He steps in when things go bad, right? When things are falling off, that's when he steps in. So you got to make sure whatever's going on, there's no issues. So he can stay out, but he's not. He's going to get involved if things go south. And that's what happened this past year.
Alan Rosenberg
Right. It's like Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder.
Don Hahn
Nice.
Alan Rosenberg
Where he says, you know, the only thing worse than somebody that doesn't know is somebody that thinks they. That doesn't know, but thinks they know.
Don Hahn
That's a great line.
Alan Rosenberg
And that. But he thinks. And so it said, then if that's the case and he's going to get his fat hands in, then Aaron Judge, Aaron Rodgers, every Aaron, even, even Aaron Boone's not going to work because Woody's going to get involved.
Don Hahn
Another great line from Days of Thunder. I'm more afraid of losing than I am of getting hurt.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
Oh, what a great line.
Alan Rosenberg
And Robert Duvall.
Don Hahn
Yes. The great Robert Duvall.
Alan Rosenberg
Yes. Chose that movie over Godfather 3. And I wonder how much that would have changed at least the perception of Godfather 3 if he came back as Tom Hagen.
Don Hahn
Tom Hagen? Yeah, the consigliere. Wow. I didn't know that. That's still a fantastic movie. Nas in Pinebrook. Hey, Nas, you're up next.
Nas
Oh, my God. Hi, guys.
Alan Rosenberg
What's up?
Nas
Two things. I just got the email that I was the winner of the Jalen Brunson signed basketball at the ESPN Michael K Farewell show.
Alan Rosenberg
How about that? Very nice.
Don Hahn
Amazing. Congratulations.
Nas
Thank you. I got married At Madison Square Garden. I am like the biggest Knicks fan you've ever met.
Don Hahn
Wait, we got married at Madison Square Garden? Let's tell the story.
Nas
Okay, so in 2000, during the Eastern Conference finals between the Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks. My wedding was game seven on Sunday. That was the infamous Patrick Ewing finger roll. On the Friday when they lost game six. So at my wedding, which I was supposed to have it televised and have photo op at the. At the. At a box and the whole nine, that all changed because they lost the game.
Alan Rosenberg
I thought the finger roll was. Wasn't the finger roll 95?
Don Hahn
95?
Nas
No, that 95. No, I thought it was in 2000.
Don Hahn
Well, they lost, but.
Alan Rosenberg
But, but they did lose to the Pacers in 2005.
Nas
My bad. But in 2000 was when they lost to the Pacers.
Alan Rosenberg
Yes, they did do that.
Nas
And we ended up getting married with the WNBA floor down instead of the Liberty, which was heartbreaking.
Alan Rosenberg
But how much did that set you back?
Nas
Honestly, it was about 14k. I had to bring everything in because the only room. Yeah, total. Because including my wedding dress, like, I was very economical. But it was the first time they ever done a private wedding there. So I worked really close with the marketing team and we converted the lobby of the Paramount into my reception area.
Alan Rosenberg
This is awesome.
Don Hahn
Yeah, this is great.
Nas
Yeah, it was phenomenal. I have great photos. I'm looking at my wall of fame right now. The center photo is. They put my name up on the marquee right above Pennsylvania Station. It was like they did a top notch job.
Don Hahn
This is like. What was the Deeds. Remember that? The Adam Sandler.
Alan Rosenberg
Mr. Deeds.
Don Hahn
When. When he. He didn't he go to the Garden to. He went on the garden floor to propose to.
Alan Rosenberg
Right.
Don Hahn
What's her name in the movie?
Nas
I don't remember. I didn't see that movie.
Don Hahn
Such a. You'd love it. You'd be able to relate to it. So.
Nas
So, yeah, but my.
Alan Rosenberg
So you're Drew Barrymore was the actress, right?
Don Hahn
No, it wasn't Drew Barrymore. No, it was.
Alan Rosenberg
I'm not a big fan.
Don Hahn
What's her face? The Beetlejuice, blah, blah, blah, babe. That's what it is, right? She was from that funny name town. Anyways, so if I was to guess, is your wedding date June 3rd?
Nas
No, the 4th.
Don Hahn
4Th. Okay.
Nas
Well, that was the Saturday. The 2nd was the loss. The 4th was my wedding day.
Don Hahn
All right. Wow.
Nas
Yeah.
Don Hahn
That's a great story, Nas.
Nas
Thanks. My proposal was directly related to that too, because I was telling my Husband. The morning that he was going to propose, we were at breakfast, and I said, you know, I just booked a skybox at the Garden for my team. It's not that expensive. We should do that with a group of people. And he said, well, who would you invite? So I started making a list. And he's like, well, you know, you're making a list. We could get married and do something like that. And I said, well, we don't even have a date. So at that moment, he's like, well, may set a day and let's make it official. And he got down on one knee.
Alan Rosenberg
Nice.
Nas
So that's why we got married.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, you deserve a championship, Nas. How about that?
Don Hahn
How about that?
Nas
For sure, I deserve a championship, and I'm gonna. And I deserve this ball. I just went on the NBA fan site and I bought the case for it. I'm so excited.
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, good.
Don Hahn
Well, congratulations, Nas. Good for you.
Nas
All right, but I want to get to my point real quick, because you guys are killing me with the Chiefs vitriol. You're killing me.
Alan Rosenberg
Why?
Nas
Next to my picture of my wedding is a sign. Derrick Thomas.
Don Hahn
Oh, wow.
Alan Rosenberg
It's got your own back.
Don Hahn
Chiefs fan.
Alan Rosenberg
Back before they were good.
Nas
Miserable before the Tay Tay era, which is breaking my life, because I love that the little girls are watching football with their dads, but it is diminishing the women like me that really understand this sport. You know what I'm saying?
Alan Rosenberg
I hear that.
Don Hahn
So you're mad at Don because Don doesn't love greatness like you do.
Nas
I met Adam because I adore him to such an extent, and he's killing me with the hate, with the. With the Chiefs hate. I mean, it's a phenomenal story. I understand that it's coming because of the vitriol that happened with the Patriots during the Tom Brady era. But this level of hatred is very. It's very difficult for someone.
Alan Rosenberg
The credits are rolling on this story. It's over. Bills are beaten.
Don Hahn
Wow. Okay, Nas, here's what we're going to do. Monday, after the Chiefs win, as they're going to do, and go to the super bowl, you are the first caller on the show. Please call in.
Nas
I will do that.
Don Hahn
All right, thank you, Nas.
Nas
I'm in because I honestly need to do this. I want to be the dynasty that we deserve to be. The calls are killing me, too. Don't get me wrong.
Don Hahn
That's fantastic. We're going to make this happen. Nas, I want you to be the first caller on Monday. If the Chiefs win because you need, because you are a diehard fan. Derek Thomas, you're going back.
Alan Rosenberg
Like that's, that is going back. That's when they were frustrated. I think he still holds the record for sacks in a game. Sacked David Craig seven times.
Don Hahn
Do you like, think about this? That franchise used to be one of those franchises that always ran into the wall.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, the Chiefs never could get over the wall. If I'm not mistaken, the Derek Thomas game where he sacked David Craig seven times.
Don Hahn
Right?
Alan Rosenberg
He had him in his grasp for an eighth sack. Craig shook loose and threw the game on a touchdown. Like that was the Chiefs. Back in the day. The Chiefs were kind of like the team you forgot.
Don Hahn
November 11, 1990.
Alan Rosenberg
November 11, 1990. That was the day. The seven sacks. But they were fine then. They weren't irritating.
Don Hahn
They were like Stairway to Heaven all the time.
Alan Rosenberg
Now they're the macaroons.
Don Hahn
Now they were like Stairway to Heaven. More calls coming up. Stay with us. Don Hunt Roseberg 800, ESPN there's nothing.

Big Wild Thinger.
Alan Rosenberg
I know it's unfortunate it didn't age well at all, but I'm more of a funky Cole Medina.
Don Hahn
All right, that's fair.
Alan Rosenberg
Now, do you notice I do like Tone Lo.
Don Hahn
What's sampled in this song?
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, this is the.
Don Hahn
You hear it right there. Should have given it away. If you know your rock well, Is this the one?
Alan Rosenberg
That's Van Halen. Jamie's crying.
Don Hahn
Correct.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
Well done.
Alan Rosenberg
I like Tone Loke. He was in his cameo in what was that Andrew Dice Clay movie? Ford Fairlane. Oh, my God, I was such a Dice guy. My first time ever at Nassau Coliseum was to see Andrew Dice clay in like, 1990, and I went to see Ford Fairlane and I'm like, oh, dear God, this is awful. This is not good. But I do like. But funky Cole Medina, that's good.
Don Hahn
So when you heard Mike Woodson talk, like, right away, you're like stone low.
Alan Rosenberg
Absolutely.
Don Hahn
You have to absolutely love it. 800-919-3776 tonight at 7. So right after the show's over, they will reveal the All Star starters for the NBA this year. Now, it's a different format with the All Star Game and all that stuff, but whatever. But being named a starter, that's a big deal. There's a possibility don't. That the Knicks might have two All Stars named to the starter. Now, they've had two All Stars in the past, but to have two, that's not enough. Named as starters. You know, it's been. If I'm not mistaken, I think it's Clyde and Pearl.
Alan Rosenberg
That's a long time ago because, like, who would have been on those 90 teams?
Don Hahn
Like, there was a year it was Ewing, Oakley and Starks, one year, three of them. But Patrick, I don't think any of them were starters, actually, if I'm not mistaken, I think Patrick was a starter a couple of times. Once Shaq came in the league, he had no, you know, he wasn't going to win.
Alan Rosenberg
He had no shot. But, you know, you know, Starks isn't going to be a starter.
Don Hahn
And then there was Carmelo Anthony and Amari Stoudemire. I think there was a year where there was. It was Tyson Chandler, you know, but they weren't voted like Carmelo was voted a starter, but two that were voted starters. Now remember, the fan vote is only 50%. So while Damian Lillard, last I checked, was a few thousand votes ahead of Brunson on the fan vote, he's got the big sneaker deal. So the vote in Asia really helps him big time. Brunson needs to get his own sneaker deal. This is what we're doing now. He's got to get to a point. Now if De'Aaron Fox can have his own shoe, I mean, Brunson needs to get his own shoe. He's in New York. But there's also the media and the player vote and you got to feel like median players both will say, well, Damian Lillard is, you know, a great and all time great. Jalen Brunson is right now statistically playing as one of the top five players in the league. And I'm not saying this, look at the numbers. He's probably top five or top six in the league when it comes to overall statistics. And then of course, his team winning, so he deserves it. And Carl Anthony Towns, just by fan vote alone, is probably going to get in as a starter amongst the front court. So you've got two players on the Knicks team that could be all star starters. It is not insignificant. It is certainly just something that is like, you know, it's, it's just a nomination, right? It's, it's not going to do anything different. It's not an MVP or anything, but it is saying something about the talent that's on this team. And I'm curious to see tonight if Brunson does get it. And I wonder how fans feel about it as well. Is this a recognition of a player that you feel like should start getting that kind of recognition around the league as one of the top players? Because he's not getting it. When you think about it, Nick, fans love him. NBA fans just see him as, yeah, he's good, but he's not. He has not reached that star level that I think you would expect at this point. Two years now into him being one of the top scoring guards in the NBA. Does that matter?
Alan Rosenberg
To some people it might not. This is one of those things where the game doesn't matter, but the recognition does.
Don Hahn
That's right. That's what I was getting to, you know, that recognition I think is important. But I think if, you know, again, in New York we always say this how, you know, the idea of being in New York helps elevate your, your status, your profile as an athlete. And a lot of times people say that that doesn't exist anymore because of social media and everything else. You don't have to play in New York anymore to have that status.
Alan Rosenberg
Not in the NBA. I don't think so.
Don Hahn
Maybe, maybe not. But it is something that matter. You know, Billy Wagner said he came to the Mets because he felt like playing in this market would help him. Now he went nine, nine years in Houston.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
But he said being in New York would have helped him when it comes to getting a chance to be a Hall of Famer because of again the market and elevated and all that stuff now again is before social media. But I do think playing in this market on this stage does still do something for you as a player. I think it matters. And for Brunson, he's proven the opposite. That as good as he is and as much as New York has fallen in love with them and you could argue right now, popularity wise, is he maybe second to Judge as far as most popular pro athletes in New York that play in New York?
Alan Rosenberg
Oh, after Judge is still number one. Judge is number one because it's the Yankees and he's just Soto still now he's new still.
Don Hahn
Right. Like wouldn't.
Alan Rosenberg
It's still very new and I think.
Don Hahn
The city's still split. Mets, Yankees. Right. You're not going to. But unify the Knicks do unify the city more than any other team.
Alan Rosenberg
And the contract, what he did, the sacrifice that he made, be hard pressed.
Don Hahn
To find anybody that would say, yeah, I don't like Brunson. Right.
Alan Rosenberg
Everybody. Everybody loves them.
Don Hahn
Yeah. So it'll be something to watch tonight. Something I'd be definitely.
Alan Rosenberg
What time is that?
Don Hahn
I think so tnt. Right. This is Thursday. So TNT has the games tonight and so I think it's usually in the pre game which is probably 7:00 is when they'll start revealing that. And so again I think Towns is a lock. Brunson is right there on the outside. It'll depend on the media vote and then the player vote to see if he gets the edge over Damian Lillard. So we'll keep an eye on that for you and let us know what you think about it. 800-919-3776. More your calls coming up. We do also have hockey tonight. The Rangers and the Flyers at the Garden an hour from now. Don Legreco will be doing the pregame show right here on 880 ESPN. So you certainly want to stay tuned for that. Alan Rosenberg
Now if Baby It's Cold Outside got canceled. This thing must have an absolute thrash, right?
Don Hahn
We know what funky Cole Medina is, right? Remember Spanish Fly? Yeah, like that's.
Alan Rosenberg
I mean, I remember it in theory. I never used it.
Don Hahn
No, I was gonna ask you if it worked.
Alan Rosenberg
I have no idea. I mean, I wouldn't even know where to get it.
Don Hahn
Spanish Fly?
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah. Where would you get.
Don Hahn
I don't know. Yeah, I mean, I imagine it's probably like, you know, Boone's Farm and they just put a different label on it. Right.
Alan Rosenberg
But.
Don Hahn
But the whole idea is like it's just alcohol.
Alan Rosenberg
Maybe it's cold outside. Just kind of little suggestion.
Don Hahn
This song is about listen more than words by extreme.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, but that's like Unskinny bop from Poison.
Don Hahn
Exactly.
Alan Rosenberg
But it's. That's fine.
Don Hahn
This is straight up.
Alan Rosenberg
I checked that wasn' illegal.
Don Hahn
I mean, did you? By the way, the last verse about hi, my name is Sheena. And then he found out later that Sheena. Sheena was a man.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
I don't know.
Alan Rosenberg
That's the 80s and I'm down with the ladies. There's something wrong with you.
Don Hahn
The kids today would hear that song and it's just, you know, this is a different generation now.
Alan Rosenberg
But I do think that the younger generation has to realize that, you know, there was just a different time. That's a time does change. We evolve as human beings and what we laughed at and thought was actually cool. We accept now that, you know what we were. We were wet on, that we were wrong. But you know what? But I. It's. It's still. It's still a good song. It's an interesting song.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Alan Rosenberg
Don't judge me. I never did that stuff.
Don Hahn
Now, what sample is that song?
Alan Rosenberg
I don't know. Would you know it?
Don Hahn
I. I haven't. I, like, I heard it a little bit, and I'm trying to remember it. Jay, can you play it again? This just the beginning. I'm trying to like, like it. Just think for a second. It's not my. Is it my Sharona from the Mac maybe, like, just slowed down.
Alan Rosenberg
Could be. I could look it up.
Don Hahn
You got to look it up.
Alan Rosenberg
I do know that Jamie's crying.
Don Hahn
Yeah, Jamie's crying. You got that in first note now.
Alan Rosenberg
That's all I got on Tone Low is those two songs.
Don Hahn
I think that's all everybody's got on. I just want me that in baby's kids.
Alan Rosenberg
I was missing something. I just. Because that's all. That's all I got.
Don Hahn
Look it up for me, and I'm gonna do this. Hey, Everybody, it's Superbox Bonanza 6. So earlier in the show, we had a winner. Apple TV was given away. So here's your chance. Every qualifier will take home an ESPN prize pack and have a chance at one of 10 super box prizes like someone won earlier in the show. So the number for today was 21. So be caller number 21 right now at 888-987-ESpn. That's 888-987-ESpN to select a box for the big game with a chance to win $250 in the first and third quarters, $500 at halftime, and a final score payout of $1,000. It's all brought to you by Tully, Mardu, Irish whiskey and Sloman's security. Was I wrong?
Alan Rosenberg
No, I was just looking at Wikipedia. The song contains several samples.
Don Hahn
Oh, a different sample.
Alan Rosenberg
Get off your ass. And jam by Funkadelic.
Don Hahn
Okay.
Alan Rosenberg
Hot blooded by Farnie.
Don Hahn
That's what it was.
Alan Rosenberg
Hot blooded is the song also satisfaction by the Rolling Stones.
Don Hahn
Really?
Alan Rosenberg
When his song. When this song is mentioned in the lyrics. Christine 16 by Kiss. All right now by Free. All right now.
Don Hahn
Yep.
Alan Rosenberg
You ain't seen nothing yet by Bachman Turner, Owner, Overdrive. Nothing yet.
Don Hahn
That's a lot of.
Alan Rosenberg
And the cowbell sample is from Honky Tonk Woman by the Rolling Stone. So he just. You know what? He has almost nothing to do with this.
Don Hahn
I Got a Fever.
Alan Rosenberg
Really?
Don Hahn
The.
Alan Rosenberg
The only prescription, the only thing, obviously the only thing Tone Loke had to do. Do with that song was how inappropriate.
Don Hahn
Funky Cole Medina. He brought the inappropriate, right? Oh my God.
Alan Rosenberg
Musical stuff. But that's a lot, man.
Don Hahn
There's a lot of samples there. There's a lot going on in that song.
Alan Rosenberg
He's still with us, right? Let's see.
Don Hahn
Tone Loke.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah, I don't know.
Don Hahn
You know, it's funny, I. I was in Utah for a Knicks Jazz game two years ago and the halftime performance was Young mc.
Alan Rosenberg
Okay.
Don Hahn
Which was ironic because he was no longer young.
Alan Rosenberg
Yeah. And Young MC was wrote this song. He did Funky Cole Medina.
Don Hahn
How about that? And so it was interesting to watch that performance because while he sounded. Which to his credit, the same, he again, Young MC was an ironic name at that point. So.
Alan Rosenberg
Wow. How old do you think Tone loke is?
Don Hahn
Oh, God, 58.
Alan Rosenberg
Bang. He will be 59 March 3rd.
Don Hahn
Look at that. Look at me. Wow.
Alan Rosenberg
He just felt like he was old then.
Don Hahn
Well, he had that voice, right?
Alan Rosenberg
So. So what?
Don Hahn
What would you rather have, his voice or your voice? Because you got a great.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, thank you. I appreciate that. Well, listen, he made a lot more money with his voice.
Don Hahn
You're doing pretty good with yours.
Alan Rosenberg
So 1989, that song came another summer. So what was he, 33? No, 23.
Don Hahn
He was young. He had a voice like that at 23. Can you imagine? Right.
Alan Rosenberg
Wow. So let's get him on.
Don Hahn
We should.
Alan Rosenberg
Where's he from?
Don Hahn
I don't know. He's got to be a Oakland.
Alan Rosenberg
Well, he's born in Los Angeles.
Don Hahn
There you go. Figured that. All right, 800 now. 193776. Remember, at 6:30 we go to a Rangers pregame. So we get your calls for the rest of the way. Coming up next in the 6 o'clock hour. Stay with us, John. You got some Mazda?
