Finding coverage that best fits your needs. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. That sounds like heaven to me. Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8:80 ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers.
Peter Rosenberg
DHR on ESPN New York, 5 o' clock hour. It's 5:03 in the big city as Don McGregor might say. Peter Rosenberg, Alan Hahn gonna get you to 6:30, then we'll get you to Mets baseball. Phone lines open 1-800-919-3776. Got some Yankee calls to get to. But first, Alan, you talked about the importance of that game yesterday. And I will say this before the wheels came off and I know you would argue the wheels came off early, but it at least was a game that was up for grabs. Not in the Michael K. Sense, in the, in the real sense.
Alan Hahn
It was very winnable.
Peter Rosenberg
It was a winnable game and it was, it was a back and forth game for a while. It did, it did to me, Alan, start to feel like a Yankee Red Sox game. Yes. Wacky. Yes. Some terrible errors on both teams, particularly the Yankees of bad pitching as well. But it was close and I felt a level of intensity and then it, and then the wheels just completely fell off.
Alan Hahn
Although it did lack like the edge of a, you know, again, we still aren't getting the same juice. You know, Yankees Red Sox is just, it doesn't, I think it's more from a fan perspective at this point than it is between the players. Michael Case said something earlier today that I kind of, I see it and I hate it, but I see it. So I know he's right is the Yankee approach to everything is always even keel. They don't believe in emotion, they don't believe in any of that stuff and being, you know, getting extra juiced for a series and all that stuff. And you know, he has talked about that and I, I think you see it, it's very buttoned up. You've said this, right? A very corporate approach to things. I'll get that in a minute. I think that that's part of the problem number one. But it's the relief pitching that doesn't come through. That's Part of the frustration. I know there's the four errors. I know the late one, the ninth inning era, you know, Goldschmidt, that's not, that's, that's a problem. Obviously, the three errors in the second inning was not great. I just, to me, pitching, this was all about pitching. That was the issue. They did not get good enough starting pitching, and obviously the bullpen stuff was definitely not good enough. You're at home, and you just can't give up a picket fence through the middle of the game because that's those little, you know, death by a thousand cuts. Yeah. Like, that's how you. And then obviously, De Los Santos giving up the bomb. I, I just thought the approach and all that stuff just still didn't feel like a team that had that steely determination of, we're gonna let this team know that it stops here. You've lost now six in a row to this team. Six in a row. And everybody knows it's not just some other team. This is the Red Sox, and they have your number this year. You're playing at home, and, and it's August in a series that, you know, they're a little behind you, and you could really bury them. And I just didn't see it. Now, I, I, I look at, I look at tonight's start for Max Freed. I, I know this is going to sound like hyperbole, and I understand that it is technically a false statement, but emotionally, this feels like that must win. This is what, this is what an ace does to stop. This is what he does. He comes in and he sets a tone. Like, who's the tone setter? Like, what's the, what is that that you're looking for? I was waiting for somebody to come out of the bullpen and do the tone setter. All right, enough's enough. Like, every time the Yankees would take a lead, it would give it back, take a lead, give it back, give it. Who was going to come in and just shut it down? It didn't seem to happen. So this, this game tonight feels like it has a lot more importance to it, because three out of four I felt like, and I'm not the only one. Others have said it. Jeff Nelson said it yesterday. 3 out of 4 felt like a requirement because you wanted to put credibility into the 8 of 10 that you won going into the series, that, hey, things have turned. Yes, you played some teams that aren't very good in bad pitching, but maybe something started to click and you get into a rhythm, and now you're Playing a team that, that is important, that is a winning team and to lose the first one, I don't like. But if they now to walk away two and two while okay, it's still even and still two wins is still important in the standings. I'm looking at this as more of an emotional tone setting credibility series because you're going to go right back to playing bad teams again and they could win the next give 8 of the next 10. But I still think if you're trying to give me reason to believe in October, you gotta. This is a series as well as when you play the Astros and all this stuff, you still got to show yourself good enough to go toe to toe. I just did not like, I did not like the tone of that game last night. I blame the pitching more than I blame anything else. The throws, yes, they were bad, but to me this was about their pitching.
Peter Rosenberg
Listen, that's a fair one for you to pick Alan. But I would argue the errors are just as much a part of the narrative. Yes, they didn't lead necessarily every time to the runs, but it still shows that, that lack of it.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, they weren't, they weren't tight.
Peter Rosenberg
No one was tight. No one was sharp.
Alan Hahn
No, no, it was. You're right.
Peter Rosenberg
From early on when you see Jazz Chisholm, I mean Jazz's throw hasn't landed yet. You know this, it just shows like there is.
Alan Hahn
And that's a double play, right? Like that's a double play. That's it. That's, that's two outs there. And instead the throw was just a little loose and it air mailed and it just led to some other play. But you know, the Red Sox weren't good either by the way. You know, they, I mean getting picked off at third base, they had their own issues. So I also look at it where both teams really didn't play well. It's just the Yankee bullpen was just so poor that the Red Sox took advantage of it. Scratch out and they're not a great offensive team. Scratch out some runs at 10 hits. You know, I do think it's more about the Yankee pitching and the effort in the bullpen and what they've been trying to establish with what they did at the trade. It's very similar to the Mets. What they did at the trade dime was supposed to lock up what had been a weak point and instead this, this bullpen is not one that you feel full confidence in. So I am, it's once again watching tonight to see show me something. I think if you're a fan, that's the general consensus is just show me something heart. Show me fight. Show me that you're a little more dialed in because of who you're playing. Show me that it's August, but it's late August and there is a little chill in the air now at night. Show me that you've got that sense to you of, okay, it's go time, like it. And remember when Boom was saying that over and over again how, like, it's. It's time. We got to go. It's time for us to go. It's time for us to get right. All that stuff when they were losing those series in a row the way they did, it feels like even more now, the urgency should start to show itself in the way they play, and not just against bad pitching in Tampa, in that stadium, when you knock out 14 home runs, it should be showing against a rival, a historic rival in a series at home. Right now, that's. And you have your ace on the mound right now in Max Freed, who has struggled lately. I need to see him dig deep and give me a start. That is that tone setter so that the guys in the dugout know, okay, he's bringing. He's dealing well. Get him some runs.
Peter Rosenberg
Here's John in Washington who clearly feels similarly about this team not being up. What's up, John?
Caller/Listener
Hey, guys. Alan. I think we're in the same. I think we're the same wavelength. Yeah. I'm actually the guy that called Michael earlier today.
Alan Hahn
Yep.
Caller/Listener
And. And I. I'm the one that made the statement about how I feel like they just lack the intensity when they have to get up and play division rivals or whether it's the Astros, just teams like that. And I equated it to my. My boys, they do martial arts, and a lot of times their personality is just to be kind of relaxed. But then they'll go against someone that just is intense, and it catches them by surprise almost. And I told them, I was like, you have to be ready because they're going to come like that. You don't know what your opponent's going to bring, but I promise you, they're going to bring their best. So you have to. You just have to have your own intensity. But. And. And really what I said is I like somebody like Ben Rice because he kind of reminds me of like, a Jorge Posada, Paul o' Neill type. And I know you can't have all those guys on the team, but I feel like that's kind of what the Yankees are lacking. They, you know, somebody to just say, okay, enough's enough.
Alan Hahn
Remember, John, when they made the trade for Jazz, that was one of the first things people said about Jazz, was, hey, they've got somebody with a little bit of a personality. He's got some swagger. He's not afraid to, you know, to. To just show some emotion and all that stuff. You know, Caballeros is actually the same way. He's got a little bit of that, too, where you hate to play against him, but you love to have him on your team. That kind of guy. I just. But, you know, the. It always starts with the leader, doesn't it? And Aaron Judge is that guy that is stoic and doesn't. And Stanton's the same way. You don't see Stanton really get to emotional. He doesn't really get very animated. They sort of are like. It really does feel like they're sort of like the stormtroopers. You don't. You just. You don't see their faces. They don't react. They don't do it. They just march in and just start shooting like it's nothing crazy. I don't think. See, baseball is not a sport that. I think you come in and you're all jacked up because I think it can work against you. So I'm not talking about pumping your fist and. And all that stuff. But you love that about o', Neill, who played that way. And Posada was very, you know, he'd get in your face. Rogers, Roger Clemens, we love that. But I do think it's the way you play. I think it's a coach more than anything. But honestly, John, I wanted to see the pitchers show me a little something more. And I just feel like it's just when you need it most, it's not there. Like, that's a game where the team comes in at 5am and guys are a little road weary and a little fatigued.
Caller/Listener
Oh, yeah.
Alan Hahn
It's like, all right, pitchers got to take care of this game. And they didn't.
Caller/Listener
Yeah. Yeah. And who. And even Louise Hill, right from the start. You know, he comes out and he just. I'm in the West Coast. So I listened to yeah. And I'm like, man, dude, you got to start throwing strikes.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Caller/Listener
And again, I just think that the whole, you know, everybody talks. We got to get to the postseason. Everything just leads to the postseason. Well, whatever you are in the regular season is going to manifest in the postseason. So if you're a team that makes errors and all that. That's just going to continue in the postseason. So that's why I really don't really have much faith when they get to the postseason, I feel like it's just going to repeat and people are going to be, you know, auctioning off baseballs again.
Alan Hahn
John, thanks for the call. That's my fear. And why Everybody who's trying to tell me that I'm a hater and all that stuff, I want to be miserable. I'm rooting against them and all that stuff. Come on. Like, it's. It's what I see. And, Peter, I think I've said this a million times. What I see, I just. I. It just doesn't look right. And so you could say a regular season, you can't get up too much for these. Some of these games. No, but there are certain series that do feel like a little more. And these always. Red Sox, Yankees, always do feel like a little more. Especially when they've got your number and you're trying to make sure, okay, it's got to stop here. And instead, it's a poor outing. I just. Those are the types of things that, when you watch, you just say, in the playoffs, though, when it's time to dial it up, can you. Because I haven't seen you do it.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's keep it going and head over to Joe in Chappaqua. Hey, Joe.
Caller/Listener
Hey, guys. Thanks for taking a call.
Alan Hahn
Hey, Joe.
Caller/Listener
So I went to the game last night, and, you know, I'm used to Yankees, Red Sox games being, like, four hours long or whatever.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Caller/Listener
But the pace of that game was horrendous. It was horrendous.
Alan Hahn
Let me ask. I mean, you were in the building, so.
Caller/Listener
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
Did it have a. Was there a buzz at all? Or was it definitely not like that usual buzz? Because it did feel. Again, this is on a screen. Flat. Like, it felt flat.
Caller/Listener
Yeah, I think. Go ahead.
Alan Hahn
No, that's why I'm asking you. Did it? Did it? Yeah. Was it like that in the building? Because some people always say, well, I've said before, like, wow, the building didn't sound like. Oh, no, in the building, it was loud. It just didn't come through tv. Remember last year in the playoffs? I felt that way. And that ended up being the broadcast more than it was the actual stadium. So you're telling me it didn't. It felt flat.
Caller/Listener
Last night, it fell flat because, you know, they couldn't get ahead of any batters. It was like a three. Oh, count, a three, one count. Then they'd walk A guy. Then they'd have an error. Then it was just. It was horrible. I just glad I got my bottle in and got the hell out of there in the ninth inning.
Alan Hahn
That. Thank you, Joe. That has been, I think the common theme from a lot of people that at least I got the bobblehead out of this. Now tonight's lineup, there's no stand as expected. Judges obviously still. DH Bellinger's playing right field, so you got Rice is going to play first base. Wells will be back behind the plate. You know, it's still. It's a good defense is the better defensive lineup. But with Freed at on the mound, I just feel like that's. That's the guy I'm watching more than anybody else. How about this though, Peter? Both teams tonight are not on regular. Their regular tv. Amazon, obviously. The Yankees broadcast Amazon, yes, broadcast, but it's on Amazon and we love Amazon. And the. The Mets are on apple. So again, if you wanted to watch both. No last channel. Sonny, you gotta go to this and if you want to switch over to see what the Mets are doing, then you gotta hit the back button and then slide over to the other app and then click on it and hope you're still logged in and then go find the game, then click on that, then wait for the little spinny wheel to stop before the game comes on.
Peter Rosenberg
You hate the spinny wheel, don't you?
Alan Hahn
Hate it. I just hate the fact that I just can't hit last channel. Want to watch both. Don't you?
Peter Rosenberg
Listen, we're in a new era. ESPN is on demand now. Things are different, my friend.
Alan Hahn
Can they just all. When are they all gonna be on espn? All right, we've seen the report of the ESPN MLB thing. Let me just do this and just get it done.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, we might as well just get this. Just rip the band aid off, for God's sake. Let's go to Will, who wants to talk Yankees in the Bronx, appropriately enough. What's up, Will?
Alan Hahn
Hey, Will.
Caller/Listener
Hey, what's going on, guys? Just have two quick points to make. One for Han and one for you. Pete, I just wanted to. I agree with you on the pitchers from last night, for the exception of Tim Hill, which I think in my opinion, consistent pitcher coming.
Alan Hahn
But they use him, Will, it feels like, because obviously he's got the weird, you know, the, the submarine pitch style, like the weird arm angle they really like. He. I think he only faced what, two batters that he did. He faced three.
Caller/Listener
I think it was three because I saw he pitched well.
Alan Hahn
He hasn't. He has to face three. What am I saying? Of course he. He faced three. But I mean, like, it's. You don't. You only, like, he's not somebody that you get a lot of. Right. He's definitely a situational guy they throw in, but I think he's been good. Yeah.
Caller/Listener
He got him out of a huge den last night and kept him in the game where it was still four to three.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, well, look, when I, When I say the pitching was an issue, it's.
Peter Rosenberg
It's.
Alan Hahn
It's obviously a blanket statement, but it doesn't include everyone. It's more of. It's like, he'll heal. Needed to give you. Like, he gave you five innings, and I know they're still kind of getting him there, but five walks, you know, like that. Like, he was not sharp. And obviously, you know, Deval was not good. Weaver looked like he had not a lot in the tank. And the De Los Santos, like, he had no shot at that point when he gave up the home run.
Caller/Listener
Yeah. He shouldn't even be coming out the pen ninth inning. It shouldn't even have him.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. But I like Hill. I like him.
Peter Rosenberg
So what's your. What's your gut feeling for this weekend?
Alan Hahn
I. Like I said, I. I don't know why. I. I don't know if I could trust it. But in all honesty, like, I need to see again with Freed on the mound. You have to say to yourself, despite his struggles, which he's got to be right. He's. He knows how big this game is. You need to get this one. And then, you know, Will Warren's going up against Garrett Crochet on, On Saturday afternoon. That's like, Garrett Crochet is really good. So that's going to have to be. And Will Warren's been good lately, so that's a tough one there. And then Rodan's on Sunday, Sunday night, by the way, so hopefully he's not dripping with sweat because at least it's at night. And maybe the. The weather will be a little bit cooler. But I need to get three by whatever. However, whatever it takes. I need three before you go to play.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, listen, I love your approach. I think there's a chance that by some point this weekend you'll be saying, I need two, I need two.
Alan Hahn
Well, no, you're right, because if you.
Peter Rosenberg
Don'T get the first two, you're desperate for two.
Alan Hahn
Think about it Sunday. Like, Sunday has that other must win feel. If they split the next two and they're down right then you know what?
Peter Rosenberg
The Red Sox taking three or four.
Alan Hahn
If Freed wins tonight and then Crochet just dominates on Saturday, then it becomes Rodon's got to win this game because you got to come out of this thing two and two. At the, at the worst, two and two. But going in, I wanted three out of four. Like, show me you've really turned the corner. Show me you've got momentum. The Red Sox had been struggling and so this and you're, you're at home. They own you right now.
Peter Rosenberg

Yes, exactly. Enough with the food. Do you know who the Iowa State quarterback is?
Alan Hahn
He's a guy.
Guest/Additional Commentator
Yeah, he is a guy.

He is a guy.

I was state quarterback Former. He could play Charger Jet Ram.

Rocco Becht. Anthony Becht's son.
Alan Hahn
That's right. I've seen. I've seen Beck. He's been tweeting stuff. Shamrocks and whatnot.
Guest/Additional Commentator
And by the way, I'll tell you what. Kind of like. Kind of like Iowa State in that game.
Alan Hahn
Oh, you're gonna sprinkle.

I like. I like Rocco.

You're gonna sprinkle.
Guest/Additional Commentator
I like Rocco. I think.
Peter Rosenberg
Hold on. I'm just curious. I'm not doubting you.
Alan Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
How far in are you, Anthony, that you have a strong feeling on the Iowa State being three and a half point dogs at KS Utah.
Alan Hahn
Look at you knowing the line already.
Guest/Additional Commentator
Well, listen, Peter's law again. Peter's locked in block. So we love. No, I just. Look, I. It's just a guess on my end. I'm not. Anytime. I bet. I don't bet a lot of money anyway.
Alan Hahn
Anyone named Rocco. But you got a. You got a what?
Guest/Additional Commentator
Everybody remembers what really impressed me. And this was actually Cam Ward's last game as a collegiate athlete. He got pulled after the first half against Iowa State. And Rocco Becht drove his team down the field multiple times in the second half. Beat Miami 42 to 41. I forget the bowl. Forget which bowl it was. It was the Pop Tart bowl where another Pop Tart got murdered.
Alan Hahn
Oh, yes, that's right. And he.
Guest/Additional Commentator
And I. And he. Look, he lost. He lost in the Big 12 championship to ASU. And that wasn't a good game overall, but he had some impressive. The last time he played Kansas State was last year. 29, 21 win at home. This is a neutral field in Dublin. I know. Kansas State still apparently, according to the rankings, pretty good.
Alan Hahn
Dublin.
Guest/Additional Commentator

Caller/Listener
Peter Allen.
Alan Hahn
Oh, yeah, sure.
Caller/Listener
You guys hear me?
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah.
Caller/Listener
Oh, good. Max. Freedom. A lot of pressure on him tonight. Boy, after the failure last night, this is probably his biggest Yankee game probably all year. So he's definitely got a guy. Got to get it done. You know, I had a feeling that Boone just played the game too casually with the relief pitches. Didn't do anything out of the extraordinary, you know, just the usual, usual five pitches, couple guys don't have it. The guys that had it, he takes out, you know, he took out Leida. Six people. Defective.
Peter Rosenberg
Richard, you've had enough of Boone. I can tell.
Caller/Listener
Oh, well, it's not that I gotta criticize every move, you know, whenever I see something. Now, as far as Don talking about frauds. Peter, I grew up the biggest Dodger fan in the world. I really didn't under my, you know, 61, 62, 63. My grandparents were big Dodger fans. I was the biggest, biggest non Jewish Sandy Koufax fan there ever was. I know all his stats. I remembered every year from 62 to 66 those five years I remembered every no hitter, the perfect game, the big games in the World Series like they were nothing. And the reason I grew up a Dodger fan was because my grandparents and I didn't understand Brooklyn had left. Maybe I understood, but I really didn't do. I was too young when they moved in. 57. So I was the biggest Dodger fan. And a lot of guys my age between 68 and 75, they're Yankee. I mean, they're Dodger fans and Giant fans. So whenever the Giants and Dodgers come to Citi Field, the Yankees standing, they're my cousins, they are still our relatives. I don't look at them as being Los Angeles or San Francisco teams now. It's changed for me as I got a little older, especially when I was in college, the Yankees started getting better. Verden was the manager. They had that great year in 74, finished second at Baltimore. And then Billy came in in 75 and that cemented it. Then I converted to the Yankees and I had no more love for the Dodgers, but that's how it was. Now it is fraudulent behavior, but that's the way it was. I was a big, big Dodger fan, but as I got older, more New York in me, you know. And then Billy Martin, I just fell in love with the Yankees and Billy Martin. That whole team and of course, later on with Willie Randolph and all the boys, Mickey Rivers. But that's what happens. And it is fraudulent behavior. I'll agree.
Peter Rosenberg
It happened. This is what it happened. No, you're right.
Caller/Listener
This is the way it was, fellas.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, we appreciate your honesty, Richard. Everyone has a fraudulent moment. Unfortunately, you killed Alan Hahn. Let's go to Brad. Go to Brad and Montclair. Brad, your feelings on the local baseball competitiveness, you're not feeling it?
Caller/Listener
I'm not feeling any competitive. Competitiveness, Pete. Like, so. You know what? I've always. The thing about the statistics, and which I think they're very helpful, but it's like, it kind of removes the, like, kind of face to face, me versus you kind of competitive, I want to beat you kind of mentality. And, you know, it's like the guy that called in about the karate or the MMA or whatever and that his guys are more laid back. And then when they face someone that's really bringing it to them, they're kind of taken aback. I mean, it's like the same thing. Like, neither team, it's like you can tell they're just out there. They're doing their thing. They're doing what they're coached to do. If they, you know, if they put the right swings on the right balls or whatever, they get their launch angle right or whatever, they don't care about the results. Like, that did not used to be the way. Like the Yankees, when they won 96, 2000, whatever. Those guys were out to beat you. When the Yankees played the Astros. The Astros were out to beat the Yankees. They wanted to play the Yankees. They wanted to beat the Yankees. These guys are out there just swinging the ball or swinging the bat and, you know, kind of hoping things work out, you know, like, and with the Mets, I mean, these guys, they go four or five innings, first sign of trouble, they yank them out. They. They'd never work through anything. It's ridiculous. Like, these guys, you know, they're. They're just. They're soft. And I just wanted to get your guys take on that.
Alan Hahn
It's a different approach. It really is.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, to what it used to be.
Alan Hahn
To what? Yeah. That's why we really can't just live in the past. We can't do it. You know, the attitude was different. All you got to do is just see the quotes from the. From the former players and how they feel about what they're watching in pinstripes now. It's all you have. It's all you have to do. Just see what different players. We just talked to one of them yesterday, Peter. Right. Did he sound like a guy that's all in on it, or does he sound like a guy that's like, nah, man, we need to see more? And so it's just. It must just be a different approach, because it seems to be rampant around the league. Give me the team that looks like they're out. Like they're just locked in and playing.
Peter Rosenberg
With their hair on fire. Yeah, right.
Alan Hahn
Like, everybody. They get hot for a little bit. I mean, the brewers got hot, right? That was something. But even they probably were like, oh, damn, we won that one again. Like, they had a couple of crazy comeback wins and stuff. And usually it's because the opposing team's pitching sucks. And that's kind of what you're seeing around the sport. Relief pitching comes and goes, and starting pitching is not reliable. And so with the right matchups, you'll get some wins, you'll get into a rhythm. But no one seems like unbeatable. No one seems like the Evil Empire. Nobody. And so it's. That's why everybody does have a chance to win. It's a matter of exactly what people say that I can't stand get to October, and it's a crapshoot. Hope it works out. I just. I don't understand it. But that's just what we're seeing in the sport entirely. It's not really that inspiring until a team gets hot. Then it becomes inspiring. Like we saw Freddie Freeman and the Dodgers last year. Like we saw the Braves when they overcame injuries and found their way to a World Series a couple of years ago. It can be inspiring when the team gets hot at the right time.
Peter Rosenberg
I know, but it makes it. It makes it like, well, then what am I doing in the regular season?
Alan Hahn
Exactly.
Peter Rosenberg
What the hell am I watching?
Alan Hahn
All you do. Thank you.
Peter Rosenberg
If I'm supposed to wait, I'll judge when it's over. Let's go to Jay, switch things up. Jay wants talks of football. What's up, Jay?
Caller/Listener
Hey. How you fellas doing? Before anything, did I hear a Peter Rosenberg name drop on Supreme Court?
Peter Rosenberg
You're damn right you did.
Alan Hahn
Wait, I hear it.
Caller/Listener
Wow.
Peter Rosenberg
I have. I did an intro. Alan, on Ghostface's new album, there's a song where they.
Alan Hahn
They, like.
Peter Rosenberg
They use my voice at the beginning of the song. It's pretty cool.
Caller/Listener
Great album, man. It's a great album. And I love. I love you was able to do that. That's my favorite rapper, but thank you.
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, you know What? Jacob, if you could find it, it's called Metaphysics. You could play. It's the beginning of the song. We could play.
Caller/Listener
I know. I just. I just heard it. I made it three times because.
Peter Rosenberg
See, there you go.
Caller/Listener
But nice. But yeah. So I got a crazy take and it seems that it. It's kind of trending. But with Indianapolis having a top 10 offensive line, Jonathan Taylor being as good as he is and a pretty good receiving corp in a relatively weak division, I'm thinking Danny Jones could shock a lot of people. And I just wanted to see what you guys thought and an outside chance of even being, dare I say, most improved player worse than he was. I just wanted to see what you guys thought. I think everything is lined up for him to pretty. Have a pretty shockingly good season. I just wanted to see what you guys say was.
Alan Hahn
Jay, if I didn't hear your voice and that you just tweeted this, I would think it's a Shane Steichen burner account. But it's not crazy because of everything that you said. There are weapons there, there's an offensive line there, the division. It's not crazy if he just like, look, Daniel Jones has been his own worst enemy at times because he does a little too much. And then there's other times where especially if he's under pressure, he panics. But if he just can give you what he gave Brian Dable and the Giants a couple of years ago, a very, like, again, running game is the basis and just keep it simple. He's part of the running game because as we've learned, he can scoot like that. There's no reason to think that he could be in that conversation of a guy that you would, quote, unquote called most improve. You know, again, we've seen this. Geno's done it. Sam Darnold's done it. We have seen quarterbacks. Baker Mayfield have just found new life in a new situation. So there's a reason why he won that starting job because there's guys there that are. They don't have time anymore to invest in a quarterback like Anthony Richardson that just is kind of. He's stuck in neutral right now in his development. They need to start showing progress in winning games to save their jobs.
Peter Rosenberg
I still do just. Just because I'm messy and I don't have any dog in the fight. I would love to see Daniel Jones look great this year. Oh, it'll be fun.
Alan Hahn
You mean great like when you say great like Daniel Jones, like winning games, just winning games.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no.
Alan Hahn
He's.
Peter Rosenberg
He's shown he can win games before. If he took a full step forward, like. Yeah, you know what I mean? If he was better than he was three years ago in the playoff year.
Alan Hahn
Oh, wow.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm not going to step better than that.
Alan Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, like. Because I believe Sam Darnold, for example, has taken multiple steps forward as a quarterback since he got away from the Jets.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. Being healthy was the first one he had to do.
Caller/Listener
Right.
Alan Hahn
Talent and protection is the second one. Daniel Jones. I feel like we know what his ceiling is. I think we've already seen it. I think for him, it's a matter of stability around him. His offensive lines have been so bad with the Giants that all he ever could do is just scramble. Like, he just. You could see it. He was rushed, he was panicked. There's a lot of times it was all because it was a bad line. And then, of course, who's he throwing to? He didn't really have a ton of skill around him as well. They had Saquon, and Saquon did most of the damage. So now he's on a team that's kind of. They have some pieces and an offensive line, so can he be capable? I just don't know if he's ever going to get better than what he is or what we.
Peter Rosenberg
Maybe, you know what? Maybe I'll holler at him, you know, when I'm out there. September 20th for Russell Palooza.
Alan Hahn
Wow.
Peter Rosenberg
In Indianapolis. The. The first WWE that's a plug ple on ESPN. I can't believe how soon it is. One month from now, I will be at St. Elmo Steakhouse.
Alan Hahn
Just come on.
Peter Rosenberg

Alan Hahn
Oh. Like you dream.

How good is the sauce? This has got to be, like, the greatest sauce yet. No, I haven't been to Indy.
Alan Hahn
Oh. Show trip.
Peter Rosenberg
It's. It's.
Alan Hahn
The sauce is the boss.
Peter Rosenberg
The sauce is boss. You want. You want to put. You want to put everything in that sauce. You know what I mean?
Guest/Additional Commentator
Interesting.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, I will say this.
Guest/Additional Commentator
It's spicy, isn't it?
Alan Hahn
Put the sauce on everything. You don't want to put everything in the sauce.
Guest/Additional Commentator
Yeah, it's spicy. I don't know how that would work.
Peter Rosenberg
Whatever it works.
Alan Hahn
It's not.
Peter Rosenberg
Spicy is not quite the wrong word, even though it's called that. It's. You know, the feeling wasabi gives you. Yeah, it's hot like that.
Guest/Additional Commentator
That can't go in everything.
Peter Rosenberg
No. It's dangerous. It'll clear you out, though.

Alan Hahn
That's nice. Excellent. Good for you. That's very cool. They had to give you chills.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I was pretty happy about that.
Alan Hahn
That was a nice.
Peter Rosenberg
It's really, really a solid album too. And yeah, Ghost Face, one of my all time favorites. So I'll take it.
Alan Hahn
All right. I was thinking to you today, I was mowing the lawn, all right, cutting the grass as we say out here on the island. And I just, you know, go through music. Just, I have headphones on. I just listen to random music. And there was a, a yacht rock song came on. Oh, that you might not even know Boss Skaggs. JoJo.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know JoJo.
Alan Hahn
You didn't. You wouldn't know JoJo if Jake could look at it real quick. The beginning of the song has a little riff and a little beat and I'm like, this could be sampled and turned into something. And I thought, I'm gonna ask Peter to see if he can work on it. Make, make it, make it something. And then I thought, be cool if Peter could take. Because you and I both agree that the Blue Eyed Soul does have a lot of good, like baseline beats and stuff that are sampleable and because of what we use on our Show Rise. And I'm like, what if Peter just made some beats out of some yacht rock songs that we all kind of like and just made that sort of our, like, a consistent sound to the show. So I'm giving you work, which I know you love, so you mean even.
Peter Rosenberg
So just as simple as, like, looping.
Alan Hahn
Just loop it in with a beat and just put a little extra beat here. This is. This is the beginning of JoJo. Like, if you just loop that with a. With a heavier bass. What do you think?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't think you really have to do anything except, like, the rest of.
Alan Hahn
The song is just the typical, like, you know, like, just silly stuff. But the beat, though, has something to it.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't think you have to do anything to it except loop it. I think it sounds great.
Alan Hahn
Well, get on it. Get on it, man.
Peter Rosenberg
That's not hard. That's nice. I do like Boss Gag, so I'm not shocked. I like it.
Alan Hahn
But, yeah, that song's called JoJo.
Peter Rosenberg
We love JoJo. We have a few minutes of phone calls before Ian, so let's. Let's hit them. Let's go to Damien first on Route 80. What's up, Damien?
Caller/Listener
Hey, guys, can you hear me?
Alan Hahn
Yeah, we got you.
Caller/Listener
All right. First time, long time. Love the show, guys. And whatever that was that you were just playing, that was a dope beat.
Alan Hahn
So I like that. He likes it.
Caller/Listener
I like it, love it, love it. Reason for my call is I'm a lifelong Giants fan, and I have never been more confused as to how to root this season. I mean, it's always been hope that the defense comes together. You know, let. Let Eli get on a run, right? And hopefully we catch a hot streak. Then it was hope the defense comes together and the secondary gets better, and hopefully Daniel Jones figures it out. This year, though, I am so torn. I mean, they've looked good, they moved the ball, they put up points. The defense, front seven, in theory, should be sick. So do I root and just get behind Russell Wilson? I know the schedule is brutal, but do I root hard and get behind Russell Wilson, Mr. Unlimited. To just ball out and, you know, we steal some wins? I mean, we got winnable games against, like, you know, like the. The Saints, the Raiders, maybe the Bears, maybe we hang with the Cowboys, the commies. But, you know, do I hope and really root that Russell Wilson lights it up and we steal some wins and sniff the playoffs? Or do I root that we take some good steps forward and we just lose to teams that right now are better than Us end up like 2 and 6 and they go, you know what? Let's put the kid in and let's just let him run with it, really, and kind of just root for the future like I have. I'm so torn. I have no idea which way to go. It's driving me nuts.
Alan Hahn
Damien gives us a really interesting question here, Peter, because what is it that you want? Do you want to just stay competitive enough with Russell Wilson that there's no. Remember I said all you need is a reason? Like, if you're dable. I'm just looking for a reason, and then I'll put the kid in. Don't give me a reason. What if Russell Wilson doesn't give him a reason and we're into December out of the buy, and you're like, you know, I mean, they're. They're win out of a playoff spot. Don't you just have to ride it out and tell. Tell Jackson Dart, this is a. This is your gap year and we'll see you next season. Don't you have. Don't you owe it to the franchise, the Fans, the other 53 like you? You.
Peter Rosenberg
Let me ask you question.
Alan Hahn
Got to play.
Peter Rosenberg
Let me ask you a question. Do you think you could have the quarterback.
Alan Hahn
In Dart? Yeah, I think they know they have a quarterback.
Peter Rosenberg
You think they know they have the quarterback?
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
If that's true, then why on earth would you root for anything but winning? If that's Russell Wilson, great. If it's Jackson Dart, great. But if you know you have the quarterback, well, how important is your draft pick next year? You got Abdul Carter this year.
Alan Hahn
Oh, it is important.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, no.
Alan Hahn
Not.
Peter Rosenberg
Not more important than winning at this point. They have to win games.
Alan Hahn
Why would you. Okay, okay, okay. You know what I'm saying? Yes.
Caller/Listener
Like, you've got.
Peter Rosenberg
You have a quarterback, you're going to try to. You're trying to lose games this year.
Alan Hahn
No, you're talking about the credibility. See, I think a season, a season where, like, look, if Russ does, like, goes in the wayback machine, you're in trouble because now all of a sudden it's like, well, don't you have to sign him? Like, if he. I know he didn't show it that much in Pittsburgh, not enough nearly for them to want to keep him. But if, for whatever reason, Russ turns back into, like, let him. Let Russ cook Russ, then you have the dilemma of, wait, shouldn't he play more? Shouldn't you sign him again, which you don't want. What you want is that it's just good enough to where there's credibility and stability and winning, which is very important for a franchise of where they were last year. And then just sort of say, well, you know, but it's time to move on. Like, it's an interesting place, though, for a fan, but as I said, it's a great place for a fan because it's way better than the weight of expectations and the anxiety of what if they're not as good as we thought they'd be? And it's also better than, my God, we're going to suck. Everything sucks. And Saquon's on the Eagles, right? This is a pretty good place to be where you are right now as a Giants fan. The jets, meanwhile, you know, tonight against the Eagles, they close out their preseason and. What are you looking for? I don't. I feel like the jets are, in a way, the jets almost feel like they're sort of in a.
Peter Rosenberg
No, they're in. They're in purgatory.
Alan Hahn
Not purgatory. More of just sort of limbo right now.
Peter Rosenberg
You know what limbo sounds a lot like?
Caller/Listener
What?
Peter Rosenberg
Purgatory.
Alan Hahn
But it sounds nicer.
Peter Rosenberg
It sounds way better.
Alan Hahn
It's nicer.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no. Way nicer. All right. Speaking of way nicer, we got ENN with Anthony Pusick.

Hosts: Alan Hahn, Peter Rosenberg
Theme: The urgent question of the Yankees’ missing edge—on the field, in the bullpen, in the dugout, and even among the fans—set against the backdrop of another messy Yankees-Red Sox series. Plus, calls about NY sports culture, frustrations with modern baseball, and a touch of football and hip-hop.
Hour 3 opens in the aftermath of a lackluster Yankees-Red Sox game, with Alan Hahn and Peter Rosenberg dissecting the team's apparent absence of intensity, both on the field and in their general aura. The central question: Where’s the juice? The hour ebbs through caller frustrations, the "corporate" feel of modern Yankees, bullpen woes, the energy (or lack thereof) in the stands, and broader concerns about both local baseball and football. Fun musical sidetracks and pop culture nods keep things lively.
Rosenberg (00:57): "It did, to me, Alan, start to feel like a Yankee-Red Sox game... some terrible errors... particularly the Yankees... bad pitching as well. But it was close... and then the wheels just completely fell off."
Hahn’s Analysis:
Notable Quote:
John from Washington (08:35): Echoes the lack-of-intensity theme, likening it to martial arts competition: “You have to have your own intensity... someone to just say, okay, enough's enough.”
Joe from Chappaqua (12:45): Recaps the lethargic in-person game experience – painfully slow, energy missing in the stadium as well as on TV.
Streaming Frustrations (14:03):
Complaints about Yankees/Mets games being on different streaming platforms, difficulty for fans.
Will in the Bronx (15:47):
Praises Tim Hill’s relief pitching amid blanket criticism of the staff ("got him out of a huge den last night... kept him in the game").
Richard’s Dodger-Yankee Confession (26:13):
Explains how generational loyalty and city pride affected his baseball fandom.
Brad from Montclair (28:55):
Critiques baseball’s shift from face-to-face battles to stats and process, softening the competitive edge.
Peter (32:04): "If I’m supposed to wait, I’ll judge when it’s over. What am I doing in the regular season?"
Jay Calls (32:16):
Positive outlook on Daniel Jones’ potential in Indianapolis, might “shock people.”
Damien on the Giants (41:26):
Torn between rooting for Russell Wilson or investing in Jackson Dart for the future.

This hour is a showcase of New York sports angst: smart, funny, and brutally honest. Hahn and Rosenberg (and their callers) mourn the absence of old-school fire—on the mound, at the mic, and in the stands—while poking fun at modern annoyances (streaming woes, "spinny wheel," and emotionless superstars). Interwoven are nods to pop culture, hip-hop, and playful music production ideas, keeping the tone quintessentially New York—restless, plugged-in, and always expecting more.
