You don't wake up dreaming of McDonald's fries. You wake up dreaming of McDonald's hash browns. McDonald's breakfast comes first.
Dan Rosenberg
Ba ba ba ba ba.
Don Hahn
This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. That sounds like heaven to me.
Dan Rosenberg
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 880 ESPN, the ESPN New York.
Don Hahn
App and your smart speakers 503 in the big city. Don and Dan taking up a little sign. 6:30. Then it's our coverage of Knicks and Hornets, Rangers, Leafs. They will be on 10:50am Anton bleed, a 30 year old out of Hartford has been called up by the Rangers. So wonder if somebody's under the weather or not going to be able to play tonight for the Rangers is just.
Dan Rosenberg
A forward or a defenseman.
Don Hahn
He's a forward. 17 goals, 11 assists.
Dan Rosenberg
Maybe it's an USO parson in situation.
Don Hahn
I don't know what's going on, but.
Dan Rosenberg
What do you call those two little dots above the A in parson and because it's obviously from a foreign tongue.
Don Hahn
I don't know.
Dan Rosenberg
I only what's like the actual grammatical or the punctuation name of that. Anthony, do you know by any chance.
Don Hahn
Well, Motley Crue used it, right?
Dan Rosenberg
Yeah, that's a good point. Forgot about that. A diuresis. Oh, I'm sorry.
Don Hahn
Thanks. Sorry for that. You take some Pepto Bismol?
Dan Rosenberg
You should. I guess that's what the dots are for.
Don Hahn
Like you dream about, right, Anthony?
Dan Rosenberg
Diarrhea. Haven't heard that in a while.
Don Hahn
Oh by the way, it is now time for the tournament update which is brought to you by Sun Cruiser and Sam Adams. American Light. Looks like Auburn's gonna be okay, Stacy. Early on there's less than five to play.
Dan Rosenberg
Flexing their muscles. Flexing.
Don Hahn
And Auburn's up 74 to 53 on Alabama State. McNees is speaking of diarrhea. Up on Clemson with eight and a half to go in the second half 48 to 29. They're at the half. BYU 39, VCU 28. They're midway through the first Gonzaga blowing out Georgia 30 to 10. Finals from earlier was Houston winning over SIU. Edwardsville 78, 40, Wisconsin 85, Montana 66. Purdue knocks off High Point 75 to 63 and was Creighton over Louisville. The final score there was 89 to 75. And of course at 945 from Providence, Rhode Island. It'll be St. John's versus Omaha in their first round matchup. And that's the tournament update brought to you by Sun Cruiser and Sam Adams. American Light. So baseball now has joined the conversation. Getting ready. A week from today, we will be underway. The Mets will be in Houston. The Yankees will be home for the brewers. And that's going to be a nationally televised game. Yankees brewers on espn. Joe Buck is going to have the call for that one. So I think the Yankees are in good shape just because it's the American League, but I guess the Texas should be better. Houston, still Houston, although they did lose a lot, but they always seem to lose a lot and still kind of hang around.
Dan Rosenberg
By the way, Houston, I've been talking, the guys know, I've been talking about the last couple of days. Have you seen the Astros new city Connect uniforms?
Don Hahn
No.
Dan Rosenberg
They immediately go into like the top two or three in baseball. They are a huge improvement because remember they had ugly Space City ones the last couple of years.
Don Hahn
Well, I'm not a fan of any of them.
Dan Rosenberg
Fantastic. It's like that old 90s logo with the Astros that like shooting star but matched with the modern Astro colors. It's very sharp.
Don Hahn
I gotta see.
Dan Rosenberg
Very, very sharp. And by the way, you said the Yankees. So opening day for the Yankees is a national TV game.
Don Hahn
That's right.
Dan Rosenberg
Game two for the Mets on Friday night. National tv. It's an Apple TV vehicle.
Don Hahn
That's national TV adjacent. I don't know.
Dan Rosenberg
You gotta pay extra for it.
Don Hahn
It's not bad. It doesn't blow me away. I mean looking at some of these City connect jerseys are awful, but it's.
Dan Rosenberg
That's what I mean.
Don Hahn
But it's all right.
Dan Rosenberg
I never had a problem with a normal uniform.
Don Hahn
I never had a problem with the old time astro, you know, the 80s astro uniforms. The.
Dan Rosenberg
No, that's kind of like what they have now. Color scheme a little bit. A little bit the H with the star in the background.
Don Hahn
I like the old Jose Cruz.
Dan Rosenberg
Remember Jose Cruz Jr. There was an offspring for the Blue Jays, an outfielder, of course.
Don Hahn
Because if you're, if you have dad in the league, gotta play for the Blue Jays, right?
Dan Rosenberg
Absolutely.
Don Hahn
Kind of like a rite of passage. Well, we started the day with St. John's they've got a huge game coming up against Omaha 9:45. It is an amazing, amazing season for St. John's and it's so good to have them back in the, in the sports landscape. Four regular, four losses by combined seven points. They win the regular season, Big east, they win the Big east tournament and they come in as a two seed. So I know people are excited about it. 1,800919377, 6. And expectations have to change. And we had a caller earlier, Dan. It's like, hey, listen, I'm alum. I'm just happy they're back. I'm happy that, that they're playing big time games. All right, you could be happy about that. But you're a two seed, lost four games. You know, you want to make a run here. And sweet 16, I think is probably the bare minimum.
Dan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
But certainly tonight you should be able to take care of business and at least get, at least get to Saturday and then. And then get into next week and then you kind of see what happens, see what the matchups are. These one and dones get a little scary, Dan. They just do. You can't afford to have an off day. Of course, the negatives about St. John's not a ton of experience, but they do have a ton at the coaching position with Rick Pitino. They are not a great offensive team. Not great from the perimeter, not great at the foul line, but they play a tenacious defense that should compensate for that. So I don't see a national championship or a final Four. But, you know, if this team were to get to the Elite Eight, I think you have to be ecstatic. And I think that that should be the goal for any team that's a two seed in their bracket.
Dan Rosenberg
I think throwing the fact that, you know, Patino is not going anywhere number one. So it's not like you have to do everything this year. No, you know, you're not like losing, you know, a crop of players that aren't ever going to be replaced again. I mean, in this climate, they're going to be able to reload. And he will reload. But I agree, you got to get to the second week. So you got to win a couple of games and get to the sweet 16. Other than that, I think it's a good year. And it's like you said, the one and done format. It's hard, man. Like, that's why people always want to throw cold water on Gonzaga and say that they're fugazi because, you know, they win all these games, but they've never won a championship. They got to the, you know, national championship game a handful of years ago, but, you know, never anything to show for all these. Like Gonzaga's made it to at least the sweet 16 done nine consecutive years. You know how hard that is? Do you know how hard that is to minimum nine straight times win at least two games in the tournament? That's hard.
Don Hahn
I know it's incredibly hard, but they went from where is this school, what an underdog to where people are complaining they haven't won a national championship. So you get, when you do it that often, eventually be like, all right, when are you going to get it done? You know, it's interesting. I guess who was it that. I guess it was Griff that had Michigan State in the Final Four. Michigan State's interesting too. You know, Izzo's national championship was what, 2000.
Dan Rosenberg
That was the last time the Big Ten won a national champion.
Don Hahn
Now they are in every year, right? But it's like at some point it's like, all right, you know, Tom Izzo, great story. Michigan State is in there every single year. I think he's had the most appearances of any coach in the history of the tournament. But like they haven't won in 25 years.
Dan Rosenberg
Yeah, I got him in the Final Four because you know what, they're, they're built the same way like St. John's you know, they've got depth, they play defense, they can out physically, they can out tough. You. Jace Richardson is a freshman. His father was Jason Richardson who played for Michigan State way back when and was in the NBA. You know, he's become like their kind of go to guy. So Michigan State is almost kind of like another version of St. John's and that's why they're going to be extremely tough, I think as a 2 seed, ironically enough as well.
Don Hahn
All right, Knicks had an awful loss. Huge game for the Rangers tonight. So there's a lot on the table. A week away from Major League baseball season beginning. In my mind. I know a couple of games already in the books for the Dodgers and Cubs, but whatever. Did you see the numbers? They got 25 million people in Japan watch those games.
Dan Rosenberg
Well, did you see what the cheap. Did we talk about this? The cheapest ticket get in price for that game. One of those games. Upper, upper tank, $3,500 or 3,500 yen. What are the other. I don't know what the conversion is.
Don Hahn
I don't know. But that's still incredibly popular. But again to the point. So if they're that hungry for baseball, that hungry to see Ichiro, they have to be regular season games. Like there would have been a complete lack of interest if the games were just exhibition.
Dan Rosenberg
You could add a charity softball game. They probably would have packed the place.
Don Hahn
Well, I mean, you're giving up regular season games and then you know the joke of then they're going to go back to. They're going to go back to Arizona and continue with spring training for another week. It's just, it's silly. But when you see those kinds of numbers, then you understand why they went there. But I would say, Listen, if the 25 million people watched it on television, they were getting all this outrageous amount of money. I think they were just happy to see Major League Baseball. Did it have to count?
Dan Rosenberg
Crazy perhaps.
Don Hahn
My guess, no, I know, but like.
Dan Rosenberg
This is something they've done before and look, I don't think it's changing anytime soon. I think they're going to try to play this card as often as they can with other countries. They did it with Australia. Right.
Don Hahn
It's a money grab. But I'm sorry, it's opening day. Now, I'm not a Dodger fan or a Cub fan, so whatever. But you know, to celebrate the national pastime on opening day for the Dodgers, you know, celebrating winning a World Series last year and their first regular season game starts at 3:00 in the morning. I don't know, I just got, you.
Dan Rosenberg
Got to be really committed to. I mean like as a die Hard fan, like you said west coast, it was 3:00 in the morning.
Don Hahn
These games are going on and it's opening day. It's not just any game, it's opening day. I know your home openers where you're going to raise the banner and, but.
Dan Rosenberg
Still it's, I mean, like again. And I know it's different from when we were kids and everything, but like even. All right, let's say you're a Dodger fan. 3:00 in the morning, it's the middle of the night. Pitch blackout, you're sitting on your couch. If you are a die hard, does it really feel like freaking opening day in the middle of the night?
Don Hahn
Not. But the game counts, right?
Dan Rosenberg
But it means a joke.
Don Hahn
I. But I'm fought.
Dan Rosenberg
It's a joke.
Don Hahn
The NFL could mess, right? Even though the NFL, everything they touch turns to gold. So when they play games in Europe, the fans love it. They eat it up. They love the 9:30 games. You know, it just adds another layer of football for fans on Sunday. And it doesn't matter. It's Sunday, get up at 9:30, even 6:30 in the morning. Out in the west coast. Not a big deal, but they've got it figured out here in the States. They, they can't not get people to watch their games and be interested in their games. You know, baseball, it's been a bit of a struggle. I know they got monster ratings for Yankees and Dodgers, of course, that's the two of the flagship franchises in the sport. Yet nobody watched Rangers and Diamondbacks the year before, you know, so you haven't mind your P's and Q's here in the States and you're so worried about selling the sport in Japan and apparently they can't get enough of it. So I'm not making any sacrifices for what happens with my fan base here in the United States where I'm trying to cultivate and get back to where it was, you know, for a money grab in Japan. But you know, everybody's looking at the dollar and money was lost during COVID I get that. But as you said, it's not going anywhere any anytime soon. There'll be an opening day in Australia and eventually a Yankees and and Mets are going to be involved in this and we'll be affected by it. So.
Dan Rosenberg
Well, Dodger, Dodgers, Padres was Australia right when they did that, was it last year or the year before or whatever it was which counted, right? I didn't, I didn't watch either one. But isn't didn't the NFL also announced they're going to play a game in Australia? They are next year, right?
Don Hahn
26 I believe so, yes. But you know, it's and I don't know the time difference of where they're going to be able to start it.
Dan Rosenberg
But that's 16 hours by the way. Australia.
Don Hahn
Okay, so 16 hours.
Dan Rosenberg
There's 16 ahead.
Don Hahn
Ahead.
Dan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
So if they played the game at.
Dan Rosenberg
Seven in Australia 9:15am Friday morning right now in Australia.
Don Hahn
9:15Am not so it'd be perfect. They'll start the game where it'll be. It'll be another one of those 9:30 vehicles on a Sunday. Right.
Dan Rosenberg
But it'll probably be Monday. The game will be played in Australia on Monday and we're watching it on Sunday. If you want to keep it Sunday, that would make it like 1:30 in the afternoon Monday while we're watching at 9:30 in the morning Sunday.
Don Hahn
Crazy. Greg Joyce covers the Yankees for the Post. As just tweeted Aaron Boone still won't say whether Clark Schmidt will start the season on the il, but seems headed that way to give him time to build up properly. He threw 32 pitches in live BP today. Yankees liked how he looked. Just a matter of building pitch count.
Dan Rosenberg
Hey, again, two things if you're a Yankee fan. Number one, forget about what the price tag was. Be thankful that Cashman gave Max freed over $200 million whether it was worth it or not, because you need Bodies, that's number one. Number two, just keep looking back at the Mets of last year. Their season didn't start till mid June. I still think the Yankees are going to be able to survive all this pitching.
Don Hahn
They will.
Dan Rosenberg
I really and truly do.
Don Hahn
But I will say this, it could cost you the division. Now maybe it won't matter. You're not one and done anymore. You get a best of three and, and maybe you get all three games at Yankee Stadium, who knows? But it could come at the expense of winning your division.
Dan Rosenberg
Hey, if I took, I mean, look, you're up against the eight ball anyways. If I told you, you know, before the season even starts, your best pitcher, who's one of the best in the game, isn't going to throw a pitch for you for the next year and a half. You're already up against it. But you can still compete. You know, you could still win. Like I said, the St. Louis Cardinals, what was it, 2011? Adam Wainwright, who was their ace. And Adam Wainwright was a damn good pitcher, you know, finished in the top five. People forget, like I know, because he pitched. He was like 80 and he was all broken down at the end. But like there was that four or five year stretch. Adam Wainwright was like a top three four starting pitcher in baseball. He was that good. They won a World Series in 2011 without him throwing a pitch because he had Tommy John.
Don Hahn
Listen, it's possible the Texas Rangers lost to Grom and won the World Series.
Dan Rosenberg
There you go.
Don Hahn
But you are talking about a team that took a hit offensively by losing Soto. And listen, Goldschmidt might rake, Bellinger might rake, but they also may not. I mean, Bellinger's a little far removed from the MVP and Goldschmidt's gonna be 38 in September, so. And as already bothering him. So you got problems offensively. And the one thing you felt like you had was your pitching. Your bullpen was spectacular and you had one of the best rotations in baseball. Well, you may start the year with three members of your rotation on the aisle. So that's not nothing. But like you said, Mets were done in June. I was on the air saying they should sell. And they end up making the playoffs, but they made it as a wild card team. So Boston's improved. Baltimore is still Baltimore. They won 90 plus games last year, 100 the year before. I don't know what they can do in the postseason. Based on the last two years, not much.
Dan Rosenberg
I'm telling you, watch the Red Sox. The Red Sox are making the playoffs this year I might even pick them to win the division.
Don Hahn
I'm telling you now I'm in that. So that, so now you're, now you're dealing with having a W and depending on what seed you are having to win on the road. So it's, it is just a little bit different. 1-800-919-3776. Let's go to Dave in Westchester. You're on ESPN New York.
C
Hey, how you guys doing? I'm a St. John's fan, but I'm not going to be really disappointed and upset if they lose in the sweet 16. I mean, Rick Pitino's there, he's got Repoli, but he's done it without the nil deal. It's not like the Yankees. I mean, I'm 62 years old. I don't care what Michael Cade says. Anybody my age, if the Yankees don't win the whole thing, the season is a dis master. St. John's if they lose in the Sweet 16, I think it's a pretty good season and a good year. The Tino's going to be back. He does it everywhere he goes. In two years from now, if he's not in the final game, I'll be disappointed. I gave him four years, he's ahead of schedule.
Don Hahn
Well, there's no question, but let's see how it looks. You are a two seed, so there's a chance that you could be upset in the sweet 16. I'd like to know. He was just saying a disaster. Would you say that? The Yank, right now, right at this second, if I told you the Yankees didn't win the World Series, it would be a disaster. No, with all the injuries, I mean, see that just whatever. I'm not going to get into that.
Dan Rosenberg
It's a crapshoot. I don't know. I mean, I feel like we're so far removed from this, I haven't even really gave it a lot of thought, to be quite honest with you. Let rewind to last season. You lost in the World Series. Was last season a disaster for the Yankees?
Don Hahn
Well, I mean, I'm sure for those people that say it's World Series or nothing, then yeah, I guess it was a disaster.
Dan Rosenberg
Well, that was only your second trip there in 2020.
Don Hahn
Why do you think all we do is get inundated with phone calls? Fire Boone, fire cash, boom. This is an embarrassment. You want to see an embarrassment? Take a look at a team across the river and the Giants or the jets not making the playoffs in 15 years or what The Islanders have been since they won their four straight Stanley Cups. I mean, come on, like so you, you. I always have this conversation, but it's just so frustrating. If you want to live in a world where it's the Yankees winning the World Series or it's a disaster, I ask you this question. Are you a fan of the team or just a fan of the winning? Because anybody could be a fan of a team that's supposed to win the World Series every year like so are you telling me that if the Yankees all of a sudden and it could happen, it's happened to the spurs, it's happened to the Canadians, it's happening right now with the Dallas Cowboys where you end up going decades without a championship. You don't all of a sudden you don't finish above.500. You have a four or five year span in which nothing go way and you finish under.500 and you're out of the running for like a five year stretch. Are you going to, are you going to quit on the team or are you going to make the necessary adjustments like everybody else has? Because you know what, Take a look at baseball and tell me who wins championships every year. The Texas Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks were playing in the World Series in 2023. Neither of them made the playoffs the next year. The last repeat champion in Major League Baseball were the Yankees in 99, 2000. That was 25 years ago. It's easier to win in the NFL than it is in Major League Baseball, right?
Dan Rosenberg
And think of how long it was between back to back champs in the NFL.
Don Hahn
Right? But the days of the dynasties, they're over, okay? And it's not bad that as you're trying to kind of rejigger expectations, you still finish above.500 every year. Most of the time you make the playoffs, you just came off of going to the World Series. All right, George Steinbrenner 100 years ago, say second place is the first loser. Okay, fine, yay, yippee. He said that. But the reality doesn't exist anymore because if it did, Aaron Boone be out of a job. Brian Cashman would be out of a job. So why are you holding them to a standard that the Yankees don't even hold themselves to anymore?
Dan Rosenberg
No, they're not. I mean, now you don't even have to shave anymore.
Don Hahn
So if you think last year was a disaster, that's on you, man. That's on you.
Dan Rosenberg
Just a preemptive kind of strike for all the Yankees fans out there like before, like the panic and the Hysteria and all that stuff sets in throughout the season. If you don't like Boone and you don't like Cashman and you wanted those guys gone yesterday, despite what their contracts are, I know Boone got an extension, all that stuff. But if you're still unhappy with them and you want them gone, guess what? These injuries, especially the pitchers and Cole, most notably before the season even starts, Don, it gives them a built in excuse. Oh yeah, to where they should keep the jobs. And nothing's going to happen to them.
Don Hahn
Because they're ready going into season with an alibi. Now buckle up because it ain't changing anytime soon.
Dan Rosenberg
1 and look, I said they'll be fine. They may not win a championship, but They've only won one championship in the last 25 years anyway, so what's the difference? I still think the Yankees could have a good season and one that ends in October. I do.
Don Hahn
Yeah, I do too baseball. But you know, I'm just going off of what that caller said. When we don't win, it's a disaster. I mean, can you honestly say that this year, as wide open as the American League is, can you say that when you may start opening day with three of your five pitchers on the IL Stanton probably not going to be playing until God knows when. All right.
Dan Rosenberg
Questions around the diamond too.
Don Hahn
No, there's a lot. There's a. There's a lot to get to.
Dan Rosenberg

Oh, I know the Humpty Dance. I just didn't know from the beginning.
Dan Rosenberg
It's like the Hokey Pokey, except the Humpty.
Don Hahn
It's not like the Hokey Pokey. You turn yourself around.
Dan Rosenberg
That's what it's all about.
Don Hahn
It's all about. Ooh. 1-800-919-3776. Let's talk to Brashear in Beth Bethlehem. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Bobby?
C
Hey, how you guys doing? Thanks for taking my call. I was just saying I feel like the best move for the Giants to avoid malpractice is as a coach. You deal with the known versus the unknown. We know for a fact we gotta face A.J. brown, DeVonta Smith, Debo Samuel, Scary Terry, Ceedee Lamb, whoever else they pair with them. Let's draft Travis Hunter. And if Mero feels like he wants to give Shane and Davo a chance, give him an extension. Get a quarterback later on or don't get one at all. And I got a question, Don. What is the deal with Quentin yours at Texas? He kept Arch Manning on the bench for two years. Is he that bad or what's the deal?
Don Hahn
Well, no, you had a starting. You had a starting quarterback and they wanted to win now. And he's going to get his opportunity next year to get a chance to play. And he got a chance to play because of the injuries. But I don't think there's anything going on there in Texas. Here's the thing with the Giants. Yes, you're absolutely right. I don't think I ever talked to Dan about this. If you were going to bring back Shane and Dable, I would have extended them. Hey, you believe in them, right? So why have them sacrifice your future to try to save their job in the now? Give them an extension allowed them to draft a quarterback. The jets have completely taken all the pressure off of Aaron Glenn. They went from a team going to the super bowl to now they there are going to be no expectations around the jets because they went out and got Justin Fields. Nobody know what kind of quarterback he's going to be. If Rogers had stayed, hey, we might be able to win 10 games. Maybe we'll go to the playoffs, make a run. They didn't want that. The Giants now have a general manager and a head coach that are expected to go out there and win games. So don't be surprised that they're trying to go after Stafford, go after Rogers, try to get better at the quarterback position because they won that game against Indianapolis and the first thing Dable said after the game was see what happens when you get good quarterback play. So if you believed in them, Dan, extend them or let them go. You're half pregnant with this now. And then you make the statement after you tell everybody that they're coming back is I don't want to be here like this next year. So what do you. How do you expect them to conduct themselves, Dan? How would you do it? Can they afford to think about the future when they know they don't have one? Give them a contract extension? They didn't. So as a Giant fan, I'm left with them trying to win as many games as they can. Otherwise we're starting from scratch again.
Dan Rosenberg
Clemson within eight by the way, with two minutes to play. So they've come back from the dead but might be running out of time. We'll see. But with the Giants like, all right, you've already tried to get these veteran quarterbacks so you're trying to win games, but I think you're doing it more so because you're trying to save jobs, not win games to show progress. Right? They're doing this to win games, even if it's a few to justify Shane and Dabel coming back next year. So if you're going all in down with these veteran quarterbacks, whoever it's going to be, then why wouldn't you draft a player who's going to be able to step in on the field day one with your first round pick and help you win games next year? Because that's what you're trying to do. Apparently it's not build for the future. So that's why I think they're out on one of these quarterbacks Even if they fall to them at number three draft the guy who's going to play day one.
Don Hahn
Unless they don't think there is somebody to draft that can play day one.
Dan Rosenberg
There's got to Travis Hunter plays day one. Oh, I'll tell you about quarterback, non quarterback, right?
Don Hahn
No, there's plenty of guys that they could take. Listen, if both quarterbacks are taken, you could take Carter at 3. I mean nobody is going to complain about anybody. They take any non quarterback they take at three because if the quarterbacks are gone it'll be Carter. If one of the quarterbacks is gone, it'll probably be Hunter. So I think you're in good shape there with the third pick but you're not going anywhere without quarterback play. And the other thing I will say that also doesn't get a lot of play is I believe that Shane and Dable think they've got more talent than we give them credit for. I think they believe nobody else does but I think they believe if they bring in the right quarterback and he plays well that they can compete for a playoff spot.
Dan Rosenberg
Well, what was it the bye week back in November last year? I mean I don't know if Anthony could find the cut that might have been left at our old studio when we moved the cart. Might have still been there. But when Joe Shane had his bi week press conference, what did he keep saying? Don? And we were all like laughing at him. He's like, I don't think we're that far off. Remember, like you're the laughing stock of the NFL. We're not that far away.
Don Hahn
Now in his defense they did get putrid quarterback play and you can't win without good quarterback play. But they did strengthen the offensive line, they did strengthen the secondary which is the two areas they needed to get better in free agency. They're going to have the third overall pick in the draft, I believe. Yes, they're trying to save their jobs, no question. But I think John Mara is in it as well to say, hey, I think if we get good quarterback play, if Aaron Rodgers goes out there and throws 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions for 3,500 yards, that we can compete for a playoff spot. And that's what he wants. Now he could be proven wrong because maybe one of those quarterbacks will play well and they still lose. But I think that's also the little secret that the Giants believe they're closer than anybody else in the world believes they are. And I always circle back to that Indianapolis game. Listen, Indianapolis wasn't any good but they were. That was a meaningful game for them. They needed that game to make the playoffs. And the Giants beat him. Scored a ton of points against them because they got decent quarterback play.
Dan Rosenberg
Well, I.
Don Hahn
And it was the first thing Dable said in the postgame press conference. See what happens? You get a good quarterback play. So he's basically telling you, give me a good quarterback and I can win. Right.
Dan Rosenberg
He's trying to control the narrative. I think that was in like, hey, let me help save my own ass. That's what that was.
Don Hahn
But that. But that's the. That's the mode they're gonna be in, right? Save your ass mode.
Dan Rosenberg
Right. Well, we beat it. And remember that game we took? The Colts lost that game more so than the Giants wanted. The Colts just mailed that thing in. And the Colts have been a disgrace the last couple of years.
Don Hahn
Oh, I. Again, I don't think anybody's hanging their hat on it, Dan, but the point is, is that they won a game that everybody and their mother wanted them to lose, that everybody was shocked. They could not get out of their own way, especially at home. And listen, it wasn't pretty. And Indianapolis definitely gave it away, but the Giant special teams, when they ever see a kick return for a touchdown, for God's sakes, with that team, they couldn't help but win the game. Like, everything seemed to really be coming together for them. And it was the first thing Dable said, get quarterback play. So he must think if he gets a decent quarterback. But hey, it's their own fault because that regime was the one that brought Jones back.
Dan Rosenberg
Well, right. And it's also kind of mixed messages. So what are you saying? Oh, see what happens when you get good quarterback play? Would you agree that the year before that, don, that Tommy DeVito gave them, quote, unquote, good quarterback play, yet they somehow still won three games with him as the quarterback? So which one is it? Good quarterback plays, it leads to success or not? Because I don't think Tommy the veto was quote, unquote, good. If he was so good, then why did he come back? The next year is the third stringer if he was so good and won them three games. Right.
Don Hahn
Lock 17 to 23, 309, four touchdowns, no interceptions, a quarterback rating of 155.3. Right. So he played out a couple of.
Dan Rosenberg
Throws out of his rear end against a mediocre team at best. You know what I mean?
Don Hahn
I don't buy. I don't buy it, Dan. But my opinion doesn't mean anything. I just think that they look at. Yes. They're trying to save their jobs. Yes. John Mara wants a winning season because they've been an embarrassment the last two years. And quite frankly, with the exception of that fluke in 2022, and I'm sorry, I'm a Giant fan, it was a fluke. They were 9, 7 and 1. They very easily could have finished 7, 9 and 1, not made the playoffs. They got the perfect matchup in Minnesota and they beat them and then got thoroughly embarrassed. Since the day that they were bludgeoned by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the playoffs in 2022, they have been a colossal embarrassment. And John Mara wants that taste out of his mouth. So everybody wants to win, but I think they believe they can with a decent quarterback. But I don't know if they're going to get any of them because Diana Rossini is reporting that they hope that Wilson and Flacco will choose them. So that means they must have made offers to them, Dan. Because how do you choose somebody when you're not offered anything?
Dan Rosenberg
Right.
Don Hahn
So we think they're waiting for Rogers and they. And though they made it all, they must have made an offer to Wilson, made an offer to Flacco. And those guys are. I don't know, Joe Flacco's. Ah, my couch is looking pretty good price.
Dan Rosenberg
A nice couch, though.
Don Hahn
That's. I'm sure it's state of the art. It's probably one of the. Where you can charge your phone.
Dan Rosenberg
Plus, he's like 6 5, so he probably needs one where you can spread out. You got good leg room, nice recliner, cup holders, all that stuff.
Don Hahn
I.
Dan Rosenberg
Maybe George Costanza couch with the refrigerator.
Don Hahn
Refrigerator, yeah. Costanza. I got to bring this up. I feel bad. There's always a guy that's on hold forever, but we just didn't really continue the conversation about Rutgers. But he's still there. And I want to just throw some love to Moose in Jamaica, who's hung in there for 151 minutes. I apologize, Moose. So we'll give you some time here. I'm so sorry.
C
Done. Yeah, I came up with other points too, but like, I literally went to get a cheeseburger. Like. Like, I mean, coming back from class and. And all this other stuff. Right. So. Yeah.
Dan Rosenberg
You could have went to Albuquerque to get that cheeseburger.
C
Not even around the corner. Not. It's New York City. Everything's open. But first things first. Good evening, Don and. And Dan. How are you?
Don Hahn
Good. How are you, buddy?
C
Still. And chill it so yeah. Not to rain on Dan's parade about Rutgers, but another comp that you were mentioning as I was calling or thinking about calling because I had a Knicks point. I'll get to that too. But Philadelphia 76ers were pinned to give the Knicks a run for their money for the third seed. Now they're a lottery team that's a comps of Rutgers this year. Ironically.
Dan Rosenberg
Yes and no. I think it's different because Philadelphia hitched their ride to two guys who were injury prone careers and they didn't play all season in Embiid. And Paul George, like Rutgers took two high school kids. And I know that Harper had some issues in January, he was sick and then he hurt his ankle and he missed some time. But still it's still no excuse to not even be a 500 team where in basketball one guy can make the difference. Don't you had two of the most nights the two best players in terms of God given talent on your team and they only won 15 games.
Don Hahn
And I don't think Philadelphia at this moment is trying.
Dan Rosenberg
No, they've, they've, they'll now forget it. They wave the white flag. Yeah, yeah, right.
Don Hahn
The Rutgers was. Rutgers was still trying down the. They were still trying to win those games like so because they still wanted to see if there was some portal into them making a run in, in the, in the tournament and trying to get into the dance. They, they still made an effort to win every game they could and still finished under.500.
C
Yeah. So I'll get to my next point and I'm only talking about the expectations with Philly, not necessarily the reality in terms of what was spoken before the season. It's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's negligible. I can't even say the word. It's negligible.
Dan Rosenberg
It's all. I see what you're going at, Moose. It's cool.
C
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And about the Knicks, all the talk on New York sports radio, I mean just, just like. I mean especially this station with Han over and the whole Boston Cleveland thing. I think the Knicks may have a legit chance to be Boston, but it may come down to that one game they need to win on the road in the second round against Boston where somebody has a hot start and somebody closes on the road. And the thing is I don't think it's that likely but not impossible because Boston plays defense. Something the Knicks come playoff time with Mitchell Robinson and the two athletic wings they have need to commit themselves to. And I guess the fans want to see it on the regular season towards the stretch run for taking my call.
Don Hahn
All right, no problem. I appreciate that.
Dan Rosenberg
You know, it's funny about Cleveland. They won 16 in a row and they followed it up with three straight losses.
Don Hahn
Yeah, right. But they're also probably in, you know, they're not going to get caught.
Dan Rosenberg
No, they're locked. I think every, the only, the only thing Cleveland has to play for and Oklahoma City is best overall record in case they both meet up in the NBA Finals as to who gets the.
Don Hahn
Home court and, and I've always felt in sports it's one thing to, to get up for games that you need to make the playoffs. When you start like talking about seeding and hey, we want to win this game because if we face Oklahoma City in the final, we want home court. That sometimes isn't enough to muster the effort that you're looking for. I mean, like I said, I'm not trying to apologize for the Knicks effort in San Antonio. They' locked into the three. You know, Cleveland won 16 straight games. They've got nothing left to prove. They're finishing the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. They're probably not completely focused now. Let's just get to the playoffs. That's why I don't spend a lot of time, Dan, you know, grading the Knicks in these last 14 games because they're locked in. I don't think there's anything they can do, positive or negative, that's going to change hearts and minds about what you're going to feel about them going into the playoffs. And I think they know that.
Dan Rosenberg
Here's the question, okay. And we may not get an answer, but here's the question, can the Knicks even make it through round one with a less than 100% slash compromised Brunson?
Don Hahn
I think it's seriously in doubt.
Dan Rosenberg
I agree.
Don Hahn
I.
Dan Rosenberg
Because as of two days ago, he was still in a walking boot.
Don Hahn
Well, that's why if you're looking for something in these last 14, getting Robinson 100% and in case you missed it, not playing tonight, they're not. He's not ready for a second of back to backs, which you brought up to my attention yesterday, it's one of five they have. I mean, it's ridiculous the amount of back to backs that they have, but making sure he gets to 100% and getting Brunson back with enough time where you feel comfortable, he's at 100% come playoff time. Because right now, at this moment, I think there's a better chance they lose in the first round than beating Boston. Would you agree?
Dan Rosenberg
Yes. Oh, they got no. There's a better chance of making it through a week without a new sinkhole and I 80 than beating Boston.
Don Hahn
Oh, that is ridiculous. Did you realize that one of the mines, if you don't know what we're talking about, every day they're finding, like, these sinkholes on Route 80 because there are mines that were built under that they built 80 over back in the day. I swear to God, I think it was because, you know, we built it a hundred years ago. By the time these things fall apart, we'll be dead. So what does it matter?
Dan Rosenberg
Right?
Don Hahn
Right.
Dan Rosenberg
Yeah. So civilization won't exist.
Don Hahn
One of the mines they found goes back to the Revolutionary War. Now, you don't have to be like an A plus in history to know that that goes back to 1776.
Dan Rosenberg
That's unbelievable. Imagine what kind of gems you can find under there.
Don Hahn
There's a guy I know, Gary, lives up in Sussex county, and he's got a job like Whippany and he has to take root 80 to work. It's a 20, 25 minute ride. It takes him an hour and a half every day because 80 is just an absolute debacle. Not to mention you could be driving and all of a sudden you'll be, you'll, you'll, you'll see, you know the tomb of George Washington underneath you. Yep, there you go.

Thanks to Dan over the last couple of days, filling in as Allen's been traveling with the Knicks. March has been a tough month for Allan. He's fighting through it with all the travel, and then all of a sudden, Peter under the weather. So he's taking the rest of the week. So he'll be back on Monday, but Allen's gonna be back tomorrow. Well, I've St. John's the recap. We'll assess where the Rangers are. Crazy, man. Win a President's trophy and now you got 13 games left around the outside looking in for the playoffs.
Dan Rosenberg
I was having a conversation with our friend Anthony during the commercial break. I could say that, right? He's our friend. Communal friend.
Don Hahn
Yeah, for sure.
Dan Rosenberg
Okay. So there's obviously a chance that they could lose tonight to Toronto. Toronto is a good hockey club. Could lose Saturday. How many more of these losses before you sit there and say, realistically, you know what? It's time to wave the flag? It's not happening.
Don Hahn
Well, I think we're dangerously close to that now because. All right, if you lose tonight and I. And I think they'll bounce back with a better effort. They have to. I mean, it was awful on Tuesday against the Flames. Don't look at the 21 score. They could have lost that game. 8 1.
Dan Rosenberg
It's crazy that 15 shots on goal would be considered an improvement.
Don Hahn
Yeah, that's incredible stuff, right? So they sit right now to a point back of Montreal for the last playoff spot. So you're like, don, what are you worried about, man? They're only a point back. You got 13 games left. Well, Montreal's got two games in hand. And Montreal's played well. They're seven one and two in their last 10. The Islanders, they're only two points back of the Rangers. They also have two games in hand on the Rangers. So if the Rangers were to Lose tonight, Montreal wins. Well, then the Rangers would be three back of a playoff spot and the team they're chasing would have two games in hand. If the Islanders win tonight. All right, Rangers catch a break. They're only a point still out. Montreal still two games in hand for Montreal, but then the Islanders would be tied with the Rangers and the Islanders would have two games in hand. So I mean, listen, you can make this all go away by starting to win games, but that's the thing that disturbs you. They law there right now. This is game three of a four game homestand. They lost the first two to Edmonton and Calgary scored just two goals in both games combined. It's, it's beginning to look like if you lose tonight, then you start asking, you lose to Vancouver and go oh and four on the home stand and then you're just wondering when your next wins come. And never mind making the playoffs.
Dan Rosenberg
Right? And then you can't even take the west coast for granted. Even though you know a couple of those teams are just laughable.
Don Hahn
I understand. But right now the Rangers can't afford to look past anybody. The Los Angeles Kings are a playoff team. They've got 81 points right now. That's nine points more than the Rangers have. That's how you start the trip. And it was also a team that I think beat the Rangers five to a Madison Square Garden earlier this year. All right, Then you got Anaheim and Seattle, I mean and Anaheim and San Jose. Anaheim has 66 points. All right, that, that's not that much different than the Rangers, right? They've only won three in their last 10 and San Jose is the worst team in the league, but a team that only lost by a goal to the Rangers of Madison Square Garden. The point is, is that anytime you go out west, I don't care how good you are, you can't expect to win every game. And normally you'd say I just come back with four of a possible six points. But if you don't win the next two games at home and you only get four in the next three, now you're coming back home with only eight games remaining and, and you might be four or five points out of a playoff spot and you're dead. That's why tonight is huge. Just Dan just to see a better effort, like if they play lights out and Toronto's just the better team and you win, maybe if just feel better that you put 30 shots on goal and you just lost to a better team, no harm, no foul. If they go out and Stink up the joint like they did against Calgary. Lose this game. 5, 6, 1. Tell me how you're a playoff team no matter where you are in the standings. Tell me you're a playoff team.
Dan Rosenberg
You can't.
Don Hahn
And already they called up Anton Bleed, who's a 30 year old journeyman player who's down in Hartford. So clearly something's going on. Peter Laviolette mentioned earlier today that he's got some roster things going on. So I don't know if somebody's sick, somebody's hurt you didn't tell us about. So they might be limping into this game physically. So all just not, not very good.
Dan Rosenberg
And one other thing too, like you wonder down the stretch like if they are still going to be in this thing, right? You figure that and then you've already seen it because he's back in there again tonight. Like Igor's going to get a lion's share of the workload he already has. And you wonder just how much he's going to have left in the tank. If you get down to that, you know, final, let's say five, six games, you're still alive and he's having to carry, you know, the bulk of the workload.
Don Hahn
Yeah, he's going to have to, he's got, you know, he's playing tonight, he's going to have to play against Vancouver. And then when you go out west, you do have back to back games against Anaheim and San Jose. But if he's healthy and you'll have a couple of days off between the Tuesday game against the Kings and the, the Ducks and Sharks on Friday and Saturday, I think he's got to just keep playing. Now maybe you play quick against San Jose. Cause San Jose is the worst team in the league unless it quicks good. I mean, I guess if you can't play your backup goaltender against the worst team in the NHL, then what are you doing? But at this point, when you need every single win and he's ready to go, I mean, can you really afford to play your backup? This is what you pay him 11/2 million dollars for, right?
Dan Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
Like there was like 50 times, I think during Hank's career he played back to back days. It just, you got to do it. You got to do it, man. And I think he's been fine. Don't get me wrong, he's only allowed, what is it, five goals in the last two games. So it's not like it's his fault it's been an offensive thing. But that Arvidson goal against Edmonton Yeah, he probably would like to have that one back in what ended up being a one goal game until Connor McDavid scored late. So all right, all this on the table of 1-800-919-3776. Take up until 6:30. At that time, 880 is going to have Knicks and the hornets and then 1050 is going to have the Rangers and the Leafs on 880 ESPN New York FanDuel is turning the excitement up even higher for college basketball through the first two rounds of the tournament. Detailed Summary of the "Don, Hahn & Rosenberg" Podcast Episode – "Hour 3: Yankees, Giants & Rangers"
Podcast Information:
In this engaging episode of the "Don, Hahn & Rosenberg" podcast, hosts Don La Greca, Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg delve into a diverse array of sports topics, primarily focusing on Major League Baseball's (MLB) New York Yankees and Texas Rangers, the National Football League's (NFL) New York Giants, and updates from the NCAA Basketball Tournament. The discussion is rich with insights, debates, and notable moments that provide listeners with a comprehensive overview of the current sports landscape.
The episode kicks off with a detailed update on the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Don Hahn begins by summarizing key games and team performances:
Notable Quote:
Don Hahn (01:40): "Early on there's less than five to play. Auburn's up 74 to 53 on Alabama State."
The conversation shifts to St. John's impressive performance in the tournament. As a two-seed, St. John's has shown resilience with only four regular-season losses by a combined seven points. Despite lacking offensive strength—struggling from the perimeter and at the foul line—the team's tenacious defense under Coach Rick Pitino has compensated, making them a formidable contender in the Sweet 16.
Notable Quote:
Don Hahn (05:19): "I don't see a national championship or a Final Four. But, you know, if this team were to get to the Elite Eight, I think you have to be ecstatic."
Dan Rosenberg adds:
"I think throwing the fact that, you know, Patino is not going anywhere… if you're a two seed in their bracket."
Shifting to baseball, the hosts discuss the upcoming MLB season with a spotlight on the Yankees and Astros:
Yankees vs. Brewers Game: Scheduled as a nationally televised event on ESPN, featuring legendary broadcaster Joe Buck. The Yankees are anticipated to perform well given their strong position in the American League.
Houston Astros’ New Uniforms: Dan Rosenberg praises the Astros' new City Connect uniforms, considering them a significant improvement over previous designs.
Notable Quotes:
Dan Rosenberg (03:05): "They are a huge improvement because remember they had ugly Space City ones the last couple of years."
Dan Rosenberg (03:30): "It's very, very sharp. And by the way, you said the Yankees. So opening day for the Yankees is a national TV game."
Don and Dan delve into MLB's efforts to globalize the sport, particularly through games in Japan and upcoming plans for Australia:
Japan Game Viewership: A staggering 25 million people in Japan watched recent games, indicating robust international interest.
Australia Plans: The potential for MLB to host games in Australia, mirroring the NFL's strategy, is discussed, highlighting the logistical challenges like time zone differences.
Notable Quotes:
Don Hahn (09:27): "It's a money grab. But I'm sorry, it's opening day."
Dan Rosenberg (12:05): "They did it with Australia. Right."
The conversation transitions to the NFL, focusing on the New York Giants:
Quarterback Dilemma: The Giants are criticized for their handling of quarterbacks, particularly the decision to bench promising players like Quentin Sellers despite their potential.
Draft Strategies: The importance of drafting a quarterback capable of contributing from day one, such as Travis Hunter, is emphasized over relying on veteran players whose performance may decline.
Notable Quotes:
Don Hahn (23:47): "Well, no, you had a starting quarterback and they wanted to win now. And he's going to get his opportunity next year to get a chance to play."
Dan Rosenberg (26:10): "There's got to Travis Hunter plays day one."
Don and Dan analyze the Texas Rangers' chances of making the NHL playoffs:
Current Standings: The Rangers are trailing the Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders, both of whom have games in hand.
Goaltending Concerns: The call-up of Anton Bleed, a 30-year-old journeyman, raises questions about the Rangers' goaltending depth and overall team health.
Upcoming Games: Critical games against Vancouver, Anaheim, and San Jose could determine the Rangers' fate in the playoff race.
Notable Quotes:
Don Hahn (37:19): "I think it's seriously in doubt."
Dan Rosenberg (44:19): "Yeah. So civilization won't exist."
Throughout the episode, the hosts interact with listeners, incorporating their viewpoints into the discussions:
Notable Quote:
Caller Dave (15:46): "Rick Pitino's doing it everywhere he goes. In two years from now, if he's not in the final game, I'll be disappointed. I gave him four years, he's ahead of schedule."
Further discussions revolve around team-building strategies, particularly for the Giants:
Coaching Accountability: The pressure on coaches to deliver immediate results versus building for the future.
Player Development: The need for the Giants to develop or acquire a reliable quarterback to enhance their competitiveness.
Notable Quotes:
Don Hahn (26:14): "Unless they don't think there is somebody to draft that can play day one."
Dan Rosenberg (31:18): "That's a nice couch, though."
As the episode nears its end, the hosts summarize key points and tease future discussions:
Yankees' Playoff Hopes: Don reflects on the Yankees' potential postseason performance amidst pitching challenges.
Rangers' Critical Games: The importance of upcoming matches in determining the Rangers' playoff eligibility is reiterated.
Teasing Future Content: The hosts hint at more in-depth analyses of the Yankees, Rangers, and other teams in subsequent episodes.
Notable Quotes:
Don Hahn (47:31): "More of Don, Hahn, and Rosenberg. Thanks to Dan over the last couple of days, filling in as Allan's been traveling with the Knicks."
