Game time is brought to you by Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey. Because when it's game time, folks, your turn. Peter, you know, it's the moment.
Allen
It's Teddy time.
Alan
He wasn't feeling it, though.
Peter
No. You know what?
Allen
I thought Alan was gonna do it.
Don
No, I did.
Peter
The first one I just lay out.
Don
We did take turns.
Peter
We got to come up with something different.
Don
We do.
Peter
This is the Tullamore. People deserve better.
Don
They do.
Peter
I'd rather go back.
Allen
They get a lot.
Peter
I mean, we should ask him.
Don
No one's gotten more mileage out of this read.
Peter
Get him on the horn.
Allen
I would love to look at what the fine details are in the Tullamore due deal because this. It feels like we've been doing this.
Don
Yeah. On the arm.
Ethos Advertiser
I don't.
Allen
This is special. We give a lot.
Peter
Well, St. John's they were looking for their 12th consecutive road when they're going to be in Marquette. Marquette coverage immediately following dan grass on 880 at 840. And we're taking a look at the quarterfinal game between the US And Sweden. Still one nothing USA early third period. They're killing off a penalty by Vincent Trocheck. So keeping an eye on that just four and a half minutes into the third period, Tullimore Dew, the original triple distilled, triple blend in and triple cast matured Iris whiskey. Be sure to grab a Tullamore do or try the new Tullamore Dew Honey Glasses up to enjoying Tullamore Dew responsibly. Nancy has chimed in.
Allen
Oh, your wife.
Peter
On the New Jersey music debate.
Allen
Your wife.
Peter
I kind of said this, but she put it in a better perspective.
Allen
Well, she's smarter.
Peter
She said Sinatra left New Jersey. Bon Jovi left New Jersey. Springsteen has never, ever left New Jersey.
Allen
Wow.
Peter
It's gotta be Bruce. As Much as this topic kills me.
Allen
Why does the topic kill her?
Peter
I don't think she's a fan of any of you. Any of them. She liked. She liked Bruce early on, but.
Allen
Well, I mean, none of her type.
Peter
Is what you're saying. No, it's just. She's good. Not. Not making any kind of statements. All pure music.
Allen
Are you sure?
Don
No.
Peter
Yeah, she.
Allen
Well, what are you doing?
Peter
Why are you being that guy? I'm just telling you, it's not political.
Allen
No, no.
Peter
I was afraid of having this conversation begin with no. You were trying to twist it.
Don
What?
Peter
That conversation, Alan. Was I.
Allen
Was I talking about politics?
Don
No, you were not.
Peter
No, I was not.
Don
You were talking about.
Alan
And we know she's listening. This isn't right.
Rich Eisen
What do you mean?
Allen
That's even worse. We don't do this. Isn't you saying that.
Peter
So Nancy, who knows, as she's not a hip hop fan, knows a lot about music. She knows a lot about music.
Allen
Yeah. Very diverse taste.
Peter
And she's. She's definitely that guy. Like, if I make a mistake about something, she'll, like, make fun of me.
Don
Yep.
Allen
Love it.
Peter
She loves.
Allen
But I also know that her favorite.
Peter
She's not mod, I'm telling you. All right, all right. The reindeer games of her favorite baseball team or hockey. Those are reindeer games. Music. You think she's motivated by music? By looks. Who's her? Who's her?
Allen
We'll tell you. Her number one is, and then we'll get into it.
Peter
Cleveland Mack.
Allen
Okay.
Peter
All right.
Don
There's not a lot of handsome there. No, there is not.
Peter
Lindsey Buckingham.
Don
Not a lot of.
Peter
A lot of things. Not.
Allen
Who else? Who else at the top?
Don
Yeah.
Peter
And then Mick, Fleetwood.
Don
Forget it.
Peter
We'll fight.
Allen
Who else at the top? Who else up there besides Sleepwood?
Peter
Mac. Who else?
Allen
Anyone else at the top?
Don
What else we got?
Allen
It's Chris, Isaac and I. I don't think that's by. I know. But he looks. But it was. But he was sexy. He wasn't handsome. But he was just.
Peter
That video. There's nothing sexy about him. He dresses like it's a country and western star. Ever see him?
Don
And he's like 106 pounds. It's really skinny.
Peter
Yeah.
Allen
And he sort of. And he sort of essayed. Who was that on stage that he made?
Don
Oh, that was brutal.
Allen
Forcibly made out with.
Peter
Yeah.
Don
And then. Was it Jim. Who? Was it Jim Carrey that just undressed him? Yeah, it was great.
Peter
And obviously the Beatles are a favorite. And George is her favorite. I would say George Is not the best looking guy.
Don
He's the third best looking guy.
Peter
Yeah, Ringo's fourth.
Don
We know Ringo.
Allen
Just listen.
Don
Yeah, Ringo got.
Allen
Ringo's homely.
Don
Right?
Allen
Respectfully.
Don
But he's, you know, he's Ringo. He's fun, he's a good time.
Allen
His name's Ringo for a great time. Come on, give him some drumsticks.
Don
I'm trying Ringo.
Allen
So Nancy hasn't weighed in.
Don
I'm trying to be the.
Allen
So she has weighed in. Nancy, a true New Jerseyite in her own right, has weighed in that the answer is it's Bruce.
Peter
It's Bruce.
Allen
The question is, if the debate was in their heart, who's most Jersey, then she would be right because she proved it with he's never left.
Peter
He's never left.
Allen
But if the question is who is most associated with New Jersey?
Peter
Well, then it begins like if you're an older person, you might say Frank. Now if you're somebody that grew up in the 80s, you'd probably say Jon Bon Jovi. But I think Bruce, who's been relevant from the 70s to today, but the.
Allen
Long hair and glammy rock vibes is what makes people associate Bon Jovi with Jersey.
Don
That's my point.
Peter
He hasn't worn his hair like that. You saw him at the Super Bowl.
Allen
But that's who he was. But people still picture they were all like that. They're still thinking shots of the heart. You know what I mean?
Peter
Nobody thinks Jersey even though they're not from New Jersey. You look at Poison.
Don
Yeah.
Peter
Like they wore their hair that way. But no, but glam garbage.
Don
Understand this is not from a Jersey perspective. Now. I think this is right. Peter, from the outside looking in, what would you associate with Jersey? Not what a Jerseyites associate.
Allen
It might be more about that.
Don
This feels more like it's good. But who is real? Who's so Jersey?
Peter
But there is no that I'm. And I'm from Jersey. There is no. No. But I'm saying there's no. Let's go here. Maybe Bon Jovial show up. That's a Bruce thing. Let's go to Asbury Park. Oh, yeah, let's go to the Stone Pony. Because maybe Bruce will show up. Like there are people that kind of like go around Jersey thinking, hoping they'll run into him. That's quintessential New Jersey.
Don
And that's Billy Joe.
Peter
Better chance of seeing Bon Jovi at Vancouver than you do.
Allen
Well, you know what? That goes a long way.
Don
And that's Billy Joel on the island.
Peter
Right? Billy Joel.
Don
There's been, like, Billy Joel, like imitators who'll sit at a piano at some, you know, some piano bar somewhere in the Hamptons, just, you know, covering a couple of Billy Joel songs. And all of a sudden, Billy Joel literally will be sitting there having a drink, walk over and sit down and, like, play and let the guy sing. Like that literally does happen.
Peter
I always felt that. That what Bruce Springsteen is to Jersey, Billy Joel is too long.
Don
Oh, completely agree.
Peter
We have the poll.
Allen
We have the poll up on the YouTube chat right now. Just.
Peter
I can just imagine.
Allen
So you go ahead and vote in there.
Peter
Yeah, they could. Because you have. Do it this way, Anthony, because then we'll rig it. Remember we used to do with K, Michael.
Alan
K's a bad guy.
Peter
Yeah, but don't do that.
Alan
I put that there.
Peter
No, it's Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi. And K's Frank Sinatra, Andrew Anthony Volpe. And then Volpe will win. And then we're back to sports and we all shut up with our music. Just put Volpe in there.
Alan
I put the pole.
Allen
Yeah, he's leaning in.
Alan
I could be out very quickly. It doesn't take much.
Allen
Yeah, I mean, he's in the third period.
Peter
All right. 1-800-919-3776. Let's jimmy in Montclair. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Jimmy?
Caller Jimmy
Hey. Love the show, as always. Great show today.
Peter
Thank you.
Caller Jimmy
So, as a Jersey guy, I definitely.
Peter
Say that Bon Jovi is a little more Jersey. I mean, I'm only 33, and I feel like a lot of the younger.
Caller Jimmy
Crowd is more attached to Bon Jovi as opposed to other two.
Peter
I do think in age, if you're. If you're 33, you're going to be probably more attached to Bon Jovi than you would Bruce Springsteen, because let's face as good as Bruce. Listen from a new music. I know he produces new music all the time. You're thinking Bruce Springsteen, you're thinking 70s, you're thinking born to Run. And that's way before Jimmy.
Allen
Born in the USA.
Peter
Right, right. And that was 1984. Yeah. So to Jimmy, who's born in three, you know, you're going to be thinking about Bon Jones.
Allen
And also I do want to give a nod to, you know, some of the great New Jerseyites since then. You're talking about the Red Man, Joe Budden, Queen, Latifah.
Peter
Latifah.
Allen
A lot of great. Naughty by nature, many greats.
Peter
Well, Shaq, he doesn't present jersey. He Was born there.
Don
Whitney Houston.
Allen
Oh, Whitney Houston. That's a pretty big one.
Don
It's pretty big.
Peter
That's, that's, that's huge.
Don
Yeah.
Peter
All right. What else you got, Jimmy?
Caller Jimmy
So I think Yankee fans have to.
Peter
Stop living in the past.
Caller Jimmy
I mean, the past is the past and no one respects them anymore. So.
Don
You'Re.
Peter
Jimmy, you're talking about other teams like, like the Dodgers dancing on their grave. The Blue Jays with their comment. That's what you're talking about, right?
Caller Jimmy
Correct.
Peter
Yeah, because they, they are, they are respected. But Allen, you've talked about. I don't, I don't think anybody in Major League baseball walks around big bad Yankees. Dodgers didn't. Blue Jays didn't last year. That edge has been lost.
Don
It's the line from Curt Schilling, the mystique and aura. Right, right. They're the dancers.
Peter
But, but the Curt Schilling that was back when it existed. Like if you're, if you're a 30 year old ball player that this is, this is in history books. Right? Like the Yankees, again, they've been consistently a playoff team, but as far as like championships, the Dodgers have won more championships, the Royals have been to more World Series. Like, so they're like everybody else. And that's the way baseball designed it, with revenue sharing. And guess what? If they do institute a salary cap, it's over. That's where it's going to really be, where everybody is kind of in the same boat.
Don
That's why the Canadiens aren't the juggernaut they used to be.
Peter
Dylan Larkin, Cowboys aren't the juggernaut. Right. Everybody playing in this game right now, this USA versus Sweet. They, they weren't alive the last time, the Canadians, and it was only 1993.
Don
Yeah.
Peter
So there's this mystique about them that they read in the history books. But as far as current time, it's just another team that they play. Understood based on what? And here's the thing. The Yankees are good. So they don't really have to live off of the past because they're good now. They haven't won, but they still could be good. That's why I took the.
Don
But if I wanted to get your attention done as a teammate, if I felt like you're a guy that just kind of puts the jersey on. Like, like you said, you're from a generation where it's like, it's the Yankees. Yeah, it's cool, it's New York and all, but you know, it's like I'm anywhere else And I wanted to get your attention. What Judge and Stanton did is the way to do it.
Peter
Yeah.
Don
Is to just kind of remind, you know, remind you of the jersey you're putting on and the fraternity you're in. You know, it's almost like, come walk with me out to the outfield. I want to show you something. And you bring them into. You know, I know most of you players don't come in here and see the monuments, but why don't you take a look? Because the jersey you put on, that's these guys.
Peter
Yeah.
Don
Like, you gotta live up to this. And you're just trying to. You're trying to. You know, you're trying to raise all the boats. Right. You're trying to get the tide up higher.
Peter
Absolutely.
Don
And that's. To me, that's. I think now I could be dead wrong. I think that was the intent here. They're both amplifying the idea that it's different here. And we need to start playing and acting this way, because lately we have.
Peter
It might be urban legend. I never. Somebody can call and maybe Kofi will send the article again. I don't know if it's factual, but it was out there. Could be an urban legend that when Dom Mattingly came to the Yankees, he thought Babe Ruth was a fictional character, like Casey at the bat. Like, he didn't know that.
Don
That he actually was a real player.
Peter
Again, I don't know. That could be Urban Lunch, but you'd understand because, you know, guy that grew up in Indiana, but still, you know, a guy played 75 years ago, like. Like to a lot of these guys, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio and Yogi.
Don
Berra, because they're not around.
Peter
And even Nettles and Guidry and those, they don't care, like, that's their grandfather's guys, that's their dad's guys. Like, you start to get farther and farther or further or further. I guess the rhetoric away from that. It becomes like you're resting on your own. Laurel, you're absolutely right.
Don
And I do think today's athletes just don't look at history the same way.
Peter
No, they don't. We used to. But also, in fairness to them, when you start to. Disney, like Jeter, I'm sure still resonates. You know, a Rod still resonates. Matsui, that 09 team, and even go back to the 2000, you start bringing up those guys when they. Even if they show up, you know.
Don
Like Andy Pettit walks in.
Peter
Andy Pettit, I think still probably resonates but do you think any of the guys from the 70s, you think if like, you know, Lou Piniella or Greg Nettles, Ron Guidry walk in there, they'll say that Reggie.
Don
Yes. There's a legend about him.
Rich Eisen
There is.
Allen
He's different, but.
Peter
There'S a mystique and all those things. But at some point you do when you the fart, the more distance that's created, it starts to be like, all right, does it matter anymore?
Don
Well, it doesn't feel real anymore. They don't. The legend you like. I get what you're saying. It sort of wears off a little bit. The impact.
Allen
Right.
Peter
And. But listen, every. The Giants haven't won at the clip. The Yankees have, but the Giants have a winning legacy. But do you think any of the guys on the current team, maybe Eli Manning, but that, you know, Lawrence Taylor or Harry Carson or Phil Sims or, or even, even, dare I say, you know, Wyatt or Sam Huff, they don't resonate with them anymore. It's too far away.
Don
It's, it's yet. So I think I, I do think you're right about that. It'll be fascinating the next time we get like one of the current athletes, current players as an interview to ask him that directly.
Peter
Yeah.
Don
Think about it. The Abdul Carter wanting.
Peter
Well, the fact that he has four tells you he didn't get.
Don
He has no idea. Like, oh, I know he's great. But they all see, you would know that's. It's, it's, it's sacrilegious for you to ask for that number and you should know that. But he doesn't. And we get mad at him and he's just like, what do you mean? He's a guy.
Peter
What.
Don
Like he just doesn't understand it. That's this generation, they don't have the same regard.
Peter
And I don't even want to go after this generation. I think it happens to all generations because I remember, well, I remember there was.
Don
LeBron's doing it right now, the way he's talking.
Peter
There was talk about, you know, like Vince Coleman not knowing who Jackie Robinson was. It was 35 years ago. I think all. I just think it just becomes you focused on yourself and you don't think about those. They think about the modern times. And the modern times for a lot of guys are, hey, the Yankees are really good, but you know, the Dodgers are really good too. Well, it's why LeBron's are really good.
Don
LeBron's been doing it and he's feeding that. That A lot of guys are building off of, which is the idea of the way the game's played today versus what it used to be. You remember J.J. redick talking about plumbers and electricians, right, that. Well, he. What he was doing in the 50s. Look who he's doing it against. As if, like now we're going to just completely disparage the history of the game. And you say it so flippantly, I.
Peter
Know that you don't realize it starts.
Don
These are the pioneers.
Allen
These are people.
Don
Again, you're like, without them, you're not here.
Peter
But they don't think about it and they don't think about it in every sport, in every generation. They just don't think.
Don
You just go, always. If you parachuted me back then, I would dominate.
Peter
Yeah.
Don
I used to joke all the time that I was born too late, that I'd be dunking on Dolph Shays if I was like, born like the 19.
Allen
1901.
Peter
Yeah, exactly.
Don
You know, like, because of the athlete that I was at a short period of my time, my life. But you don't realize that if you. If I did live in that time, I probably wouldn't have been any good because of anything else that was available to me to become whatever the hell I was for a minute.
Peter
Let's go to Cody in San Diego. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Cody?
Caller Jimmy
Hey, boys. How are you guys?
Don
Good, good.
Allen
Good.
Caller Jimmy
So I think that a lot of this conversation revolving around the Yankees can be compared to European football or soccer.
Don
Okay.
Caller Jimmy
Like, the loyalty fans have to clubs is not predicated on winning. It's just about the, the reputation, the standards that the club represents, like by putting on the pinstripes or the crests of a, you know, Man United or, Or Real Madrid. It's not about winning.
Peter
Well, I think the Yankees are cherished. And that logo means something, the brand. Because of the win.
Don
Yes. Yes.
Peter
All right. Because I don't think any of these team. This is where you lose me sometimes. I think they've all had bad guys on the team. They've all made their share of mistakes. I mean, there's some organizations that are worse than others, but I'm not going to hold the Yankees up to any other standard of they've won more than everybody else. And that's why the Lakers are popular. That's why the Yankees are popular for a while. You know, the Cowboys are very popular. All based on the fact that, hey, for a long period of time they won and they set a Standard, and then the legend grows from there, right? They do it the right way and they wouldn't tolerate this and. Well, you know, listen, they know how to share a bad guy. Listen, the Yankees are no different than anybody else, okay? They had their share of steroid guys, they had their share of bad guys. They made their share of mistakes as well, but they resonate because they won a lot. And that's kind of. I can't answer to soccer. I'm not a soccer fan.
Don
And they've won in several decades, right?
Peter
Yeah.
Don
Like, Chicago Bulls had a. Had a run of six titles in eight years. The rest of their franchise is history.
Peter
And the Patriots and the Chiefs, there's certain teams that have had, you know, they had their dynasty run, but not a lot before, not a lot after. The Yankees, they're kind of going through it now because they haven't won a championship.
Don
They've had one in every decade, but.
Peter
There seems to be. Every generation's got their Yankee team that won. Not everybody, or at least got to.
Don
A World Series every decade. Right?
Peter
And I do think, and just like that guy that tweeted, you know, calling the Yankees losers for not winning, you became a fan because you thought you were going to see a bunch of championships. You haven't. So they're a bunch of losers, right? But, like.
Allen
Well, I think there's also the argument that they're losers because they seem okay with mediocrity. And that's a fair argument. Cashman. Cashman having a loser's mentality to people, I think is a fair argument based on what he's saying.
Don
Meaning, I'm in the black every year, so I'm winning.
Peter
I don't mind that we're mediocre.
Allen
Here's what we win, but we don't win at all.
Peter
See, I think that's a Hal thing, not a Brian thing. You can. You can say that Brian's frustrating because he wants to win his way, but I think Brian wants to win because it's on his legacy, right?
Allen
He's the general manager and the handcuffs are given to him. He doesn't set the prices.
Peter
But I think, and I'm not saying this is bad, but I think it exists that I think there is a part of, like, Hal, where he's like, dude, I'm winning. Look at. I'm. I'm generating a lot of income. I'm winning. He wants to win. But I don't think he. He looks at it as a failed season. When they're in the black and the building's full and the ratings are high and they win 90 games and they go to the playoffs. I don't think he's crying. That's why everybody talks about what would George do? Well, George realized that if I don't start winning, I'm not gonna make any money.
Don
Yeah, business is bad. But right now with Hal and everybody, business is good.
Peter
Business is good.
Don
But at some point, because of the brand and the history, you gotta win one and you gotta go for it. 09. Remember, they went for it. He went for it. Let's go. Let's do it. Sign him too. Let's get to share. Right? That's the difference is when does that happen again? I think that's what Judge is trying to suggest.

Don
Oh, looks like no.
Peter
Mika Zabadajack. Andrew got. Andrew.
Alan
You'll get there, don't worry.
Don
Anthony.
Peter
Anthony. Peter Cusick was like, I can't bet him anytime. Goal scorer. That would be unpatriotic. Well, now, how do you feel?
Don
How do you feel?
Alan
Tell me you did patriotic.
Don
What's patriotic is win some money. That's. That's America.
Allen
Yeah, that's America.
Peter
That's America.
Don
Oh, let's see.
Peter
Wow.
Don
I don't.
Allen
By the way, it's the US Versus Sweden. It's under two minutes to play.
Peter
He hit his.
Allen
Anthony, the US has been up one nothing the entire game.
Peter
I don't think they pulled Markstrom yet, did they?
Alan
They said empty net, but I. It did. If they did, it was very early.
Peter
Wow, this is amazing. So a little over two minutes to.
Don
Go and I see that.
Peter
How do you feel?
Allen
What's the issue?
Peter
I gotta ask.
Alan
What is your problem with Hellebuck?
Don
He doesn't win when it matters.
Peter
He's just not a big game player.
Alan
Did you see Jeremy Swayman in the city?
Peter
That wasn't two minutes. A minute and a half. Yeesh, A minute and a half.
Don
Come on, man.
Allen
And this edition of the All Puff.
Peter
Podcast, if you're a Ranger fan that you like to be like, oh, well, at least it was a Ranger that tied it. Or you disgusted?
Alan
No, no, no, no. I don't. I don't care about that, to be honest. Listen, he's had a good year. This isn't going to like wake him up. I'd like Vincent Trocheck or J.T. miller to score. Might wake them up. Well, maybe. I mean, let's do this.
Peter
Oh, it was a hell of a shot.
Allen
Now real quick.
Don
Yeah, short side.
Allen
Now real quick.
Peter
They lose. Look at this.
Allen
No, no, guys, guys, no, no, no, no. Look at this.
Ethos Advertiser
It's radio.
Peter
They can't see.
Allen
Please let me have a conversation.
Alan
I was answering you, Peter.
Don
I'm stuck. I'm sorry. I'm locked in. Right, that's all I've got my country right now.
Allen
Turn your mic off. I got it. So what I was going to ask you was they. They lose today? No, that's it.
Alan
No medal and no meddling.
Allen
It's a race.
Alan
Pretty embarrassing if we're going to be honest.
Peter
Who we play in Rammer, once they get to the semis, a loss, then you move on to the bronze medal.
Allen
That's right.
Alan
This doesn't bode well considering all the teams that have tied it late today have come back in the overtime and won Canada, Finland.
Peter
Well, because I got to tell you, when. Because I saw this with the Devils when they were trapping back in the 90s. You get that one, nothing lead, you hold on for dear life and the other team ties it. You can't ratchet back up offense that.
Don
You were kind of dormant like playing the prevent defense.
Peter
And then you just try to get it. Got to wake up again and restart the game. So there's 48.7 seconds to go in regulation. Looks like they're going overtime. And the overtime rules are the same as the NHL. They'll play three on three, so it could be over pretty quick. But it just happened as we were coming back from bridge.
Alan
I told you I didn't like what I was seeing.
Peter
Oh boy. So we'll see, man. But this is very Captain America.
Don
What are you about to.
Peter
So we're keeping an eye on this pressure on them.
Don
Just like the Canadians. It was tons of pressure.
Peter
This is on NBC, right? This is on the. They're not NBC proper. Yes, it's on NBC proper.
Allen
Like you dream of it.
Don
Yeah.
Peter
So I'm a big Connor Hellebuck fan, but Allen's not wrong.
Allen
What about Clutterbuck?
Peter
He did go to a conference final back in 18, but he's not known as a money goalie.
Don
That's been. That's been the knock is that he's really good until.
Peter
I still think he's the best of their options. They got a chance here. Wenberg with Wenberg. We're under here guy Warrensky Warensky, who I had is at any time goal scorer seconds.
Allen
Can they get one last rush here, Donnie? No, they're not going to.
Peter
No. So they're gonna go to overtime. Play a little three on three overtime.
Don
White knuckle time.
Allen
Now wait, hold on. Is. What are the rules here in the.
Peter
3 on 3, like the NHL 3 on 3?
Allen
Sudden death.
Don
Sudden victory.
Peter
Why don't they say sudden victory?
Don
Yeah, that's been a change.
Peter
Life just sounds more. More vinyl.
Allen
Yeah, well, it's. Yes, it's more violent. Yeah, exactly. Gives us something negative. Hey, you know, I didn't mention to you guys. I just mentioned off the air.
Don
All right.
Allen
How familiar are you guys with Torren Italy?
Peter
Just the Torino or the oh, six.
Allen
That's where. That's the Gran Torino. What's what Isn't there an event there?
Don
Maybe that is. Yeah, it's Torino, right?
Allen
Oh, sure. Oh, great.
Peter
Yeah.
Allen
Yeah.
Don
I don't know if it's all.
Peter
I don't think they filmed the movie Gran Torino. Grant.
Allen
Grant.
Peter
I would have been odd.
Don
That would have been odd.
Allen
It was it about though the. That is the. Oh yeah.
Peter
Grantee is about the car.
Don
Yeah.
Allen
That's the Clint Eastwood vehicle.
Peter
Yeah. Yes.
Allen
Where he plays the bigot on his.
Don
Right.
Peter
For some reason they decided we got better taxes. We can. Let's. Let's shoot the whole thing in Italy in Torrent.
Allen
So WWE announced that they're having an event there in May. Oh and I am a big, big Italy fan. Never been to Torrent. I didn't know how it looks cool looking at the pictures of it. But like Natalie and I, you know, remember last year was France.
Peter
Was France year yes.
Allen
Feeling like Italy here now.
Don
Nice.
Ethos Advertiser
Get some.
Peter
Now how far is that food? Milan.
Allen
Milan is 90 minutes and Florence, which I feel like we'd have to make the trip because I love it. And we're gonna be. Is four and a half hours, but we could split that. Split it into two hour. Venice. I've never done. Let's see.
Peter
That looks cool.
Don
I really want to go to Venice.
Peter
Yeah.
Allen
Natalie's been to Venice. I've never. Natalie's been everywhere. But Venice is. It's four hours.
Peter
Also.
Allen
Unfortunately different direction than Florence. You never don. Have you done Italy at all?
Peter
No, I've never done Europe.
Allen
How have you never gone to Italy?
Peter
Never.
Don
Your name is.
Allen
Yeah, no, but his name's Donald. Marco Lugreck.
Alan
Nancy doesn't fly.
Allen
Okay, well then Drugger, then throw her on the plane.
Don
Mr. T didn't like to fly. They got him in a plane.
Peter
Are we.
Allen
You going to be able to.
Don
I mean, it's the first. First pull I could come up with.
Allen
I mean, what do you. Don't you don't you want to go? I mean, your dad. Your dad literally got off the boat. He didn't speak. No, he's born here. Grim. Or your dad was born.
Peter
Dad was born here.
Don
Oh, Grandpa's off the bus.
Peter
Grandpa, Grandma and grandpa off the boat.
Allen
Your dad didn't speak a lick English. A true Italian.
Peter
Yeah. And he went to Italy when he was in. In the navy and.
Allen
But. But never took you guys back.
Peter
Northern Italy. That's why blue eyes.
Don
Okay.
Peter
And my brother more like the help. 20. What is it? The 21.
Allen
23. And me.
Peter
23. Andme. Oh, 6 and 1 and it says that he's from Switzerland.
Allen
Oh, right.
Peter
Sure.
Don
Yeah.
Peter
Because that's how close to the border. Listen, over time has that border maybe shifted?
Allen
Sure.
Peter
And bloodlines kind of changed a little, you know, that's how Northern Italy.
Allen
No one knows what's happened. No one knows whose sister in law was hooking up.
Ethos Advertiser
Yeah.
Don
You go on a ski trip, things happen.
Allen
Yeah, exactly.
Peter
We were at war. Yeah. They didn't keep, you know, sister in law, whatever name. It all counts.
Allen
You could always say we were at war.
Don
Tony Clark could say that, right?
Allen
I'm not sure.
Peter
The overtime is underway.
Allen
Wait, that's it.
Peter
They play well. They go right to three on three. The difference is they play 10 minutes.
Allen
Yeah, but they jump right to it. No break.
Peter
Then they'll go right to a shootout. If they do not decide this, I.
Allen
Don'T like to start for the US I already don't like it.
Peter
Well, it's all about possession.
Don
Yeah.
Peter
And if you don't have a puck. But now the US has the puck.
Don
Who we got?
Peter
I gotta tell you.
Allen
Here we go now. I do like this.
Peter
Hold on. No, the most fun that I have calling games is the 3 on 3 on 3. Overtime.
Allen
Can you give us a taste?
Peter
Can we risk it? No, we can't risk it with the Olympics.
Don
We gotta lay out. We gotta lay out, though. Let them go.
Allen
We don't want to be great.
Peter
They would.
Don
Yeah, we don't want to be great, but it's not even our network. People need to know what's happening.
Peter
First of all, it's the Olympics, so.
Allen
All right, who has the radio rights? Anybody?
Peter
I think somebody would come in here.
Alan
Iheart, if I'm not mistaken, pull me right out.
Allen
Right.
Peter
I don't even think it'd be a letter. I think that they would just.
Don
The guys in suits would walk right in the room, pick you up and drag you out.
Alan
The noises you heard yesterday, they come through the ceiling.
Allen
What if.
Peter
What are the rules?
Allen
That he starts doing it as the jackhammer starts in 15 minutes.
Peter
That should change everything.
Allen
Oh, this is exciting, though.
Peter
It's very.
Allen
The US and Sweden in a 11 tie at OC or the chance. What are the semis.
Don
We have not beaten the Swedes. Beaten the Swedes in the Olympics since, like 1960.
Peter
1960, right.
Don
Because in 80, that was a tie.
Peter
Adam. As anytime. Goal.
Don
Where are you?
Allen
I thought you can't call it them. Well, I didn't.
Peter
I just.
Allen
You said a name.
Peter
I can't say.
Allen
But in hockey. In hockey, saying a name means a lot.
Don
It does.
Allen
It's not the same as commentary in another sport. You say that.
Peter
They gotta tell you.
Allen
You don't like how it looks, right?
Peter
No. Oh, he fell. I just can't. It's so hard to do a show. I can't look away.
Don
No, I can't.
Allen
No. It's three on three hockey in the Olympics.
Don
People are going to have to.
Allen
There's meddling on the line.
Don
We're going to get you through it. We can't get play by play, but you'll know from the tone of our voices. All right, this should be illegal. Agree or disagree?
Peter
Kick them out of the zone. What Alan's talking about is usually, see on three on three hockey, they. The team with the puck will take it out of the zone and kind.
Don
Of start over and then do it.
Peter
And the NHL is considering making that illegal.
Don
Yeah, backcourt.
Peter
Because it does kill Also takes a lot of the fun out of it.
Don
And it kills time, which we don't want to do that.
Peter
Zabanajad, who tied the game late, has the puck back behind. I thought you're not.
Allen
You're not allowed to do that. You can't stop.
Peter
I'm not doing it in the traditional sense.
Allen
No, you did it.
Peter
I'm talking right now. Breaking it up a little bit.
Allen
You got to do what he's. You got to do it. Alan.
Peter
Larkin has the puck. I didn't tell you where he has it.
Allen
What do you do?
Don
There he is. There he is. Why are we going five hole?
Allen
I got a good look at it.
Don
That's the second time Now, Peter, your.
Alan
Thoughts on a red line backcourt violation Just for over. I like that in this type of situation.
Allen
Well, it's interesting you say that. Only done in the three on three.
Alan
Well, no, no, no, it's not done at all. Oh, you mean like just playing the reset on power plays. You see it a little bit, but there's still four guys on the ice.
Allen
Yeah, I'm going to say you don't really see it much though, in.
Don
In full, but it's a full on strategy and it allows you to do a line change while possessing puck. And they have to be careful because if they try to line change like.
Allen
You can now, you can scorch them.
Don
But it just. It's almost like it stretches the ice and the game slows down and you're like, come on, come on, come on, let's.
Allen
But at the same time, it's like.
Don
Dragging it three on three.
Allen
Don't you need a little bit of a slowdown?
Don
No, should be go, go, go.
Allen
I mean, it's just so hard.
Alan
In the beginning, that's what it was.
Don
It was phenomenal.
Alan
It was. He missed. You missed. Come down the other way. You missed and then somebody scored.
Don
Remember that time the Flyers just stayed behind the net like for a minute. Wouldn't come out with it.
Allen
Like, how long can you last doing three on three?
Alan
Gotta be some quick line changes and you're gonna be smart. Line changes.
Don
Look. Oh, don't get a chance.
Peter
I'm telling you. You know, they don't have a problem with the ice. The NHL is eventually going to go to 10 minute overtime.
Don
I think you're right.
Peter
Who wants to see how exciting this is? Who wants to see the shootout?
Don
Just Quinn.
Peter
Quinn Hughes is like just playing with the fuck between the circles.
Allen
Don, that's a great point. Like, who wants to rush this so you can get to a shootout that is unrepresentative of the game.
Peter
Now, it doesn't represent the game as much. Yeah, but it's fine. But it's a lot closer than the shooter.
Allen
It's a lot closer and it's fun.
Peter
But how long does the shootout take?
Don
How long does the shootout take?
Peter
It could take a while.
Don
Two to three minutes. Five minutes. Right. So five more minutes on overtime. It can't hurt anybody.
Allen
Well, they just.
Peter
But the argument has always been they can only do the dry scrape after regulation. And can the ice take another 10 minutes of play? Well, they're doing it in the Olympics with world class players and bad ice, bad arena. I'm sure it was not even finished when the Olympics started.
Alan
If we dusted off the binder that Don and I created on the defunct game of conduct podcast, we'd be all for everything you guys are saying. Even if you got the 10 minutes, just make it ties again. I don't need the shootout. I'm all set. I don't want to see.
Allen
Yeah, the shootout.
Don
It's. It's. I don't.
Alan
I don't want to see. I don't want to see games end in a skills competition. Now, you can make an argument this is a skills competition because it's really not traditional hockey.
Don
But it's still hockey.
Peter
But it's still passing. You're still checking.
Allen
Oh, no, this is definitely still shooting.
Peter
It's so much closer to what a traditional sense.
Allen
Oh, now Alan's sick that the US Went out of the zone.
Don
Sick.
Allen
Well, guess what? They messed up too.
Don
On side.
Peter
They're on side, but they get to, like, start over. And you shouldn't be allowed to do that. But you are. But I do think that's something that might change.
Allen
The biscuit.
Peter
And a basket. Quinn Hughes.
Allen
Quinn A.
Peter
In overtime, the US advance.
Allen
USA. USA.
Peter
Nice shot between the circles. 6, 33 left it over.
Kodiak Advertiser
T.
Peter
And then they just show. Sweet. So close as they show Savannah.
Don
Gracie's texting me.
Allen
That was fun.
Peter
That was fun. And you know what we could have ignored? I just could not look away.
Allen
Sorry, but you said we could have ignored it. No, you couldn't have. You literally used the wrong word.
Peter
It was just too much.
Allen
You should have ignored it. We couldn't. We were captivated.
Don
Can you see what Gracie says? She said let the last line.
Allen
Yeah.
Peter
Poor Mark.
Don
Poor Markey because she's a Devil fan.
Peter
And Jacob Markstrom's the Devil goaltender that gave up the goal. He gave up two goals. He couldn't have Done anything about that? It's three on three. Quinn Hughes is a world class player.
Allen
How about this? I actually prefer, I think the soccer shootout to the hockey shootout.
Alan
I don't disagree with that at all.
Allen
Because the soccer thing, even though it's very hard and stadium act against the goalie, there's a level of drama to it that's different. And also soccer simply, your body can only take so much and now you're getting to the point where they just cannot go off.
Don
Can't run, right?
Peter
Yeah.
Allen
Like you had, you had 30 minutes to 90 minutes. These guys have now run 12 miles. You have to do something. In hockey, as hard as it is, there are line changes. You can keep going and make this work. Ten minutes is not that long.
Peter
Quinn Hughes gets his first of the tournament.
Don
Oh, that's a pretty good one.
Peter
Matt Bold. And Austin Matthews get the assists at 327 of overtime and the USA advance.
Allen
There you go. So the US went to the semis, goes glove. Well, you called him, you said, why does he keep going? 5 hole, went glove side and gets Marky.
Don
You got to know your scout, you got to know Markey.
Alan
Now Peter, your guy. A lot of concern why Sid left the game.
Allen
Yeah, they won.
Alan
They won. But he left and he's going under imaging. They don't know what's going on with that.
Don
The knee bent under his leg when it was. Who took him down.
Alan
It was Goodis.
Don
It was Goodis, right?
Allen
Yeah, that's. That's not what you want.
Don
So now we have us.
Alan
No, I keep getting it mixed up. It's. It's Slovakia. US Slovakia. Because two plays, three and one place. It is Canada. Finland, which is not going to be. Finland's not going to be easy. Canada, Finland, Finland.
Don
So. But the gold medal still potentially could be us.
Alan
The only way they face each other.
Peter
Now, Mike Sullivan has been very aggravated because every time that plays it's at 9:10 local time. 3:10 here. Because of course they want the United States to at least get a chance to enjoy the hockey at a decent time and not like watch clock in the morning. But Mike Sullivan thinks it's been like exhausting for them to play so late in the day till really late is a pretty late time. But I'm assuming that it's going to be 10:30 and 3:10 again.
Don
When is that?
Peter
Friday we have the times. Yeah. 3:10. United States play Slovakia at 3:10 and what's the time?
Don
10:40Am 10:40 on USA. That one's on USA. And US will be on NBC, NBC proper.
Peter
So it'll be another 9, 10 start. But hey, listen, Mike, if you win against Slovakia, you'll have an 8:00am start, which will be a 2:00 clock start. So you finally will avoid the three, the 9:10 start. But by then 3:10 here in the United States. But it'll be the gold medal game.
Don
So, so on our show Friday, we're going to do this.
Peter
The US because of this win, the US does put themselves in a position to guarantee at least a shot at a medal because if they do lose in the next round, they could still win a bronze medal because the losers of the semifinal games will play each other early in the morning on Sunday in bronze medal game. So at least they've guaranteed themselves a shot, not, not a medal, but they guarantee them a shot at a medal. So US Moves on to take on Slovakia on Friday and we'll do this all over again on Friday.

But I would hope that we pack this bar so that if the Knicks get a little bit of revenge here after two blowout losses in Detroit, that Knick fans can let Bart have it. Let him hear it because he's been chirping, man. He's been crowing all year and he's got every right to. Is it really good this year?
Peter
Yeah, I guess.
Don
Man, shut your hole, man.
Peter
So Kofi comes through again. We love Kofi.
Don
Love Kofi. Love Kofi.
Peter
There is a book that came out called the New York Baseball and the Rise of a New City by Kevin Baker. And in Kevin Baker's book there is a quote, it says Mattingly was a rookie. He was being shown the locker room. The clubhouse guy says that was Babe Ruth's locker and Mattingly said, you mean Babe Ruth was real? So this would have been what, 1982?
Allen
I hear you, by the way, because Babe Ruth feels religious at times.
Don
There is a legend, but you grow.
Peter
Up in Indiana and you're a baseball fan. But, you know, it's, it's odd, but it kind of just tells you. And nobody's gonna say that Dom Mattingly was a stupid guy. Dom Mattingly didn't love baseball. But these things, they don't, I shouldn't say they don't age well, but it's like, you know, when you don't have a lot of footage and you have pictures and then, you know, the Casey at the bat, like, things can just get like. I don't know, is it real? What's real? What's not real? You know, we're in New York, so we're inundated with it, Right? And we grew up watching Yankee games. And even if you watch Met games, you know, you hear about the records and see things. If you grew up in Indiana and you didn't have a baseball team to follow and you just played the game, you heard the name, but you don't know what's real or not. But that's kind of. So it was an urban legend, according to this book that actually happened. 1-800-937. You seem to be like, in a way about that.
Don
No, because that one's got me. How could you not know? Oh, it's, it's like one of the most famous names in sports.
Peter
Right.
Don
You could find somebody that's never even, like, has no interest in sports whatsoever. Right. And if you ask them, name one athlete you've ever heard of in your life. Babe Ruth, probably Right. Five names you'll hear.
Peter
But if you never saw any footage and you didn't follow the game and you thought it was just a made up story. Made up story. Like I said, Casey at the bat.
Don
Yes.
Peter
Like, like that's a fictional story.
Don
I think Aaron Judge is Casey at.
Peter
The bat come to life.
Don
Of course, we don't like it when the mighty Casey has struck out.
Peter
Yeah. Then the mighty Casey has struck out.
Allen
Yeah.
Peter
Paul in the Bronx. You're on ESPN New York, Paul. Hi, Paul. I think we lost Paul. He was on hold for a while. Hopefully he didn't fall asleep. Probably did, but he said a Yankee fan base was entitled, so that was what he's going to comment. Please call back Stephen Queen. John, espn, New York. Hi, Steve.
Caller Jimmy
Hi, Don. And hello, gentlemen. That whole thing about, you know, World Series or bust, you know, I'VE been a fan a long time. When Steinbrenner bought the team, The Yankees were a.500 team at best. And they couldn't really do much the first couple of years they were playing. Steinbrenner sold the legend of the Yankees. Not the legend, but the history of the Yankees. And all those people were still alive. And by the way, that Don Mattingly story. I've heard that story years ago. I think Phil Rizzuto even said it once on one of the broadcasts. It is true.
Peter
Okay, but.
Caller Jimmy
To get. Yeah, exactly. To get back to my point, people like Phil Rizzuto and all the other players. Steinbrenner loved the Yankees. I believe the boss did. And he really was a one was smart in this way. He sold the Legends, all those retired numbers, and then everything else like that. He kept on doing the Old Timers Day forever. I mean, that's part of the. The marketing. And one little other point I didn't mention to your producer. I went to a Yankee game for the first time in years to fill in. And there was a nice family, four people all dressed. You know, the kids are dressed up. They're like 5, 6, 7 years old in Yankee outfits. And we're talking. And I was saying I was an old Yankee fan. I hadn't been to the stadium in a long time, blah, blah, blah. And he said, isn't this wonderful? This is where the Legends played. I said, which legends? And he mentioned Mickey Mantle and all.
Peter
That stuff you had.

No, those were tourists from New Orleans. Wonderful, a nice family. They believed the legend. You know, it's kind of like that movie with John Wayne. And I forgot what it is. I'm getting off my point. Anyway, that's what I think is happening. And the younger people, younger people, people in their 30s and 40s and 20s are spending so much money to go to games they expect the Yankees to win because they have had the money. Now they don't have as much money as the other two teams. I'll shut up.
Peter
Now, you look at the history of the Yankees. When there was no draft, they were the best. Then the draft came in, and then there was a little bit of a lull in the mid-60s for the Yankees because now things kind of evened up a little bit. And then the Yankees figured it out, and then they started to dominate again. And then free agency hit. And when you look at free agency, when it hits in the. In the mid-70s, you know, the Yankees won in 76, 77, took advantage of it, but then other teams were able to grab players, and then they kind of evened itself out again. And then you went through the 80s where they didn't win as much. And then there was the big market, small market. Yankees were the big market. They started to win again, and then they put in revenue sharing, and then other teams started to win a little bit. There's always the ebbs and flows.
Don
It's just.
Peter
It's harder to win. The Yankees have always been the gold standard. They always kind of set the standard. But now take a look at sports. Salary cap, revenue sharing, hedge fund owners coming in, buying teams, just throwing tons of money at a problem where all of a sudden the Padres can afford Manny Machado. Right. That can happen. Before, the Padres are always. They lost guys, now they're able to jump into it. And it's just to hold any team to the standards of the past. It's just unfair. When these commissioners have all done what they do to try to bring parity and even things up a little bit. Like they think that the commissioners all are hoping for. Dodgers, Yankees and Lakers, Knicks. No, the commissioners want parity. They want the smaller market teams to excel. They want all the owners to make money. They don't want teams to move. They don't want teams to die on the vine. Silver wants to see the Sacramento Kings be good. And the Memphis Grizzlies.
Don
Absolutely.
Peter
And the Oklahoma City Thunder be good.
Allen
Yeah.
Peter
Yeah, that's exactly it. And every rule they try to implement is to help all the owners make money and have a chance to win.
Don
But it's also, like you were just saying, it's the Yankees always adjusting to the times and eventually getting it right again. And being the quote, unquote Yankees. Right. The standard. The Dodgers have sort of taken that as the evil empire, the team that everybody just is trying to compete with but can't. And it's David versus Goliath when you play them. And I still think that's why. I think fans get frustrated, because you know that a fan would say, well, that was always us. Now we're not that team anymore. And so you're frustrated by it. But it doesn't mean that what goes around comes around. Eventually it will come back around and they will be that. And there's gonna come a time where somebody, whether it's Steinbrenner, just realizing it's time to sell and, you know, get as much. He's gonna get how much? 20.
Peter
Like, yeah.
Don
So that day will come, and then the day comes when somebody else comes in and they will spend because. And then it will be like, see, there they are. They're the Yankees. Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.

This episode is a prime example of Don, Hahn & Rosenberg at their best: serious debate, generational perspective, nostalgia for legendary sports eras, and in-the-moment analysis. The show balances insightful takes (on both music and sports), fun audience interaction (from calls to live polls), and organic, must-listen radio when the game is on the line.
While some inside jokes and references reward longtime listeners, newcomers will appreciate how accessible the personalities and discussions are—especially the exploration of why sports legends, whether Springsteen or the 1990s Yankees, matter differently to each generation.
