Don Hahn
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers. All right, Allen Hahn is off to Nick's coverage. But don't worry. Don't you worry. You got sweet, sweet Pete.
Peter Rosenberg
I've never heard you refer to yourself as that and I'd like you to stop.
Don Hahn
No. Well, it came from Cody Rhodes. It's a long time ago.
Peter Rosenberg
Was that a name dropped?
Don Hahn
Oh, yeah. You know, absolutely it was, but I wasn't prepared to hit the button.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, darn it.
Don Hahn
No. It's a bad job by me. It's a bad job by me. There we go. Thank you. Don is with me as well, and we're going to take you up till 7 o'clock. Phone lines jammed. We're going to get to everybody in a moment. But real quick, guys, I don't know if you're aware, Super Bowl 59 is this week and Roger Goodell spoke as we just talked about, not just about the Chiefs getting all the calls and that stuff, but here's Goodell on a potential 18 game schedule. Don, why have the word potential?
Caller
How do we look at the off season and how do we look at that with our partners, the players, and try to continue to make advancements in this case. And if we do, 18 and 2 might be a possibility because we know that fans, I think, love football. They want more football. But we have to be incredibly sensitive and smart about the balance and how we deal with that. And I think that's something that I think we're all interested in focusing on. But it hasn't begun yet.
Peter Rosenberg
It's. It'll be there because why would you have 17? Why would you have an odd number of games? Baseball plays 162, basketball and hockey play 82. Even number of home games and away games just make sense. 17 is the nice little appetizer for 18. But the one thing that these leagues do, Peter, is they're going to show and feign concern so that when they do it, it'll say, well, they really struggled with the decision and they really tried to look at both sides. It's just a waiting game until they're able to get it into the new cba. And it'll come at the expense of a preseason game, which nobody cares about until the season starts, and say, boy, those lack of preseason games has really made the month of September suck because nobody can hold onto the football. And there are 15 penalties on each side in the early games. But whatever, they're going to get there, Peter, sooner than later, believe me.
Don Hahn
You know what I'm going to do. Don't. You're not gonna believe what I'm.
Peter Rosenberg
I have no idea.
Don Hahn
You're gonna see growth like you wouldn't believe from me. Like you dream about. Okay so much. Every fiber of my being is curious to push the button that says Goodell on dei, but I'm gonna go ahead and lay off. We don't want to go there. Do we want to go there? We don't want to go there, do we?
Peter Rosenberg
No. Now you got me wanting to hear. You could have just laid out and I wouldn't have known.
Don Hahn
But it's here. But I know I was gonna.
Peter Rosenberg
Can you play it and not comment on it?
Don Hahn
Oh, sure. Here's Goodell on the NFL's practices.
Caller
I believe that our diversity efforts have led to making the NFL better. It's been attracted better talent. We think we're better when we get different perspectives, people with different backgrounds, whether they're women or men or people of color. We make ourselves stronger and we make ourselves better when we have that. And it's something that I think will have a tremendous impact on this league for many, many years.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Don Hahn
It wasn't the same comments that I. That I read.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't. I don't know what they do, what they don't do. I know who does end racism in the back of the end zone. Well, that's now out. Well, I don't know if that to be a. I mean, it sounds like it's going to the.
Don Hahn
They're saying online the end racism will not be in the end zone as of Sunday.
Peter Rosenberg
But I would love in those situations to say the things that you've done. I'm sure they have done things right.
Don Hahn
Down what you've actually done there. I hear what you're saying, but not bad stuff. That's Roger Goodell, of course, but we played earlier, the stuff about the Chiefs getting all the calls. We've been arguing all day long. Don and I are kind of in lockstep a and how sick we are of the Kansas City Chiefs and our lack of interest in the super bowl.
Peter Rosenberg
But we appreciate their greatness, so at least I do.
Don Hahn
But we also talked some about the Mahomes thing and you know, Don and I ended up, I don't think we planned this, but we ended up sort of being in lockstep on my homes, which is that he's awesome. But it does seem like there are certain people who like are taking the Mahomes love to another level. Griffin in Connecticut. Griffin, you think Alan has Mahomes fever?
Caller
Yes, yes, yes I do. Because here's the point. So, okay, ask Alan Ms. When he, when he gets back. So if you give Mahomes a pathetic defense, a disgustingly bad defense, a defense that really stinks, it is on the bottom level like the Bengals defense. Are they still going to go to the Super Bowl? That's what he's trying to let me know because don't, don't sleep on this chief defense. Chris Jones is a beast and he's pretty good. And their secondary is not that bad either. So the Chiefs have had a great defenses for these three years too when they made it. So if you get moments of credit defense, they're still going to make the Super Bowl.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know. As much as you need a quarterback, Griffin, and nobody is debating that you need a great quarterback to have a chance to win the Super Bowl. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a quarterback that single handedly got a team a Super bowl championship. I mean there's got to be other aspects of the team that are great, whether it's the Patriots with, you know, an outstanding defense or having having one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport roaming your sidelines. I mean there's got to be other things besides being a great quarterback.
Don Hahn
If how about this, Don? Would you have said, and by the way, there's a reason it didn't happen. Would you have said if the Commanders had beaten Philly with another last second Daniels drive and then they went on to win the super bowl doing the same thing that might have been the closest we would have ever seen to a quarterback single handedly winning for a team?
Peter Rosenberg
Probably they're not very low, they're not very good. Although they're good, they have an excellent coaching style.
Don Hahn
They don't have a stout defense and.
Peter Rosenberg
There'S a reason why it didn't happen.
Don Hahn
And there's a reason why it didn't happen.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, when you look at Jalen, hurts, you say, well, Don, he's not great. And yet they're in the Super Bowl. Yeah, but they've got an elite defense. They got elite offensive line. He's got elite running back with the. With two very good wide receivers. Right. And Brown and Smith. So there's other aspects. We talk up the quarterback. It's not like the NBA where if I put LeBron James on the Wizards, they're probably making the playoffs.
Don Hahn
Yes. Or close.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, he is going to make. He's going to make that team much better because he's LeBron James. He could put him out. Certainly LeBron James in his prime. Maybe not 38 LeBron James, but you know what I mean? But there's a lot of really good quarterbacks that didn't win the super bowl that don't get the recognition because they just didn't happen to be on the right team or didn't have the right coach. So when your first argument is, well, Mahomes is winning at a clip that we've not seen anyone, not since Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle and Gila Floor have we seen somebody win at this clip. That's great, but does that mean that he's that much better than Josh Allen who doesn't have the coach or Joe.
Don Hahn
Burrow, who doesn't have the coach or the defense?
Peter Rosenberg
Doesn't have the defense.
Don Hahn
So doesn't it seem like. So the first Chiefs win was in 2020. That right? Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Don Hahn
They beat the 49ers.
Peter Rosenberg
And a big difference between the quarterbacks in that game, by the way, wouldn't you say?
Don Hahn
I would say so. That was. That was the Jimmy G Super bowl. And that was 31, 20 Chiefs win.
Caller
Right.
Don Hahn
The next year is the. Is the Bucks. And the Bucks crushed the Chiefs. They just remember that. They just absolutely had every answer. That's the Brady Super Bowl. And they had every answer. It seemed like for the Chiefs offense. Then the Chiefs don't make the Super Bowl. The next year, Rams beat the Bengals. Close game. The next two Chief Super Bowls, 38, 35 against Philly 25, 22. It just seemed like the Chiefs had all the sick offensive weapons early. And the second, they sort of lost Tyree Kill and the offense took a step back. Don, it seems like their defense has gotten better every year. So as their offense hasn't been quite as stout, they've now had a defense that's just unbelievable. It's again, not to take anything Away from Mahomes. But those other things have to be there. Which of these teams. Look at all these super bowl teams in recent years. The 49ers were incredibly balanced last year. Incredible coaching, fantastic defense. Eagles the year before, the same thing. The Bengals offense was fantastic. Their defense was better then certainly than it is now. Bucs were great on both sides of the ball with Arians and Todd Bowles. And then of course, the Patriots of the Patriots. So an incredibly balanced team. It's just. It's just not just the quarterback.
Peter Rosenberg
It's just. It can't just be the quarterback. And I thought it was a really interesting exercise this morning on Rick and Dave. Dpa. Jordan Rothenberg, great show. Where they play that Mary Cuddle trash. They did Kelsey Jones, Spagnolo, who do you marry? Who do you cuddle? Who do you trash?
Don Hahn
Genius stuff.
Peter Rosenberg
And I think. And both of them trash bags. I think Rick had. Jones was marrying Jones cuddling Kelsey trashing Spags. And then I think Dave married Kelsey Cuddle Jones and trash bags. I'm Marion Spags. Listen, Jones is amazing, right? He's a Hall of Famer, so it's Kelsey, but I probably. I'm probably going to go Spags, Jones and then Kelsey. I'm trashing because I think Kelsey's a product of how good Mahomes is and how good Andy Reid is. Offensively, I think less so Jones being a product of Spagnolo, but that defense is great because of Spagnolo. And I don't want to lose if I'm the Chiefs, I don't want to lose him. Coaching is so, so important in the NFL. I know the play like Rick's argument. The players play. He wants to give them credit. I'm assuming a former player would have that opinion. But in the NFL.
Don Hahn
Listen, Kelsey, you got a coach. Kelsey's great, too, but at this stage of his career. No, you're telling me right now. Just this is. They plug in aging Zach Erst on Zach Ertz on that offense, he's not getting a lot of catches.
Peter Rosenberg
A ton of catches.
Don Hahn
Like, I mean, and as good as Kelsey is, we're not acting like he's Prime Gronk, where there was absolutely no answer for the man. He caught the ball. You just could not answer.
Peter Rosenberg
There's a lot of Patriots in the Chiefs. When you watch them, it's like, I see Kelsey make a catch. I don't see. I don't see a defender in the screen. And then. And then he takes off again. I'm not taking anything away. From him. That's coaching, man. That you can run a play, that Kelsey, who is a Hall of Famer, can be that wide open.
Don Hahn
Yeah. And at this stage of his career.
Peter Rosenberg
And that's why I said that. Wasn't that the. Wasn't that all the Tom Brady dropping back the pass and throwing to a wide open Welker or a wide open Edelman and that? Yeah, that's. It's the greatness of Brady. It's the greatness of those receivers to get open, but it's also the scheme of. I'm going to draw up a play that's going to completely confuse the defense to where Kelsey doesn't have anybody within 10 yards of him.
Don Hahn
Let's go to Ty in the Bronx. What's up, Tyler?
Peter Rosenberg
What's up, baby?
Caller
Hey, what's going on, guys? How you doing?
Don Hahn
What's up, man?
Caller
I just wanted to chime in on the Mahomes stuff. Listen, I'm. I'm a little bit younger. I'm 32 years old, so I haven't watched all the great quarterbacks from the 70s, 80s, 90s. But I'm gonna have to say if Mahomes pulls off his three feet, I think there's no question that he's the best quarterback of all time. I think he's already the most talented. But if a couple calls go their own way or if a couple bulls bounce their own way, they're. They're right on the cusp of going to seven straight Super Bowls. And one of the point I'll make about Mahomes, when Michael Jordan won his first three peak, there was no question anymore. He had the stats, he passed the eye test, he won three straight. It's like, all right, there's no question anymore. He's the best we ever seen. And that's really all I can say about that. I'll push back if you guys have any comments about it.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, listen, he's great, but you're. You're now weighing his greatness on all of the championships. He's got a Hall of Fame head coach. Does Josh Allen have a Hall of Fame head coach?
Caller
No.
Peter Rosenberg
No, he does not. And I think John Harbaugh is great, but is John Harbaugh, Andy Reid, and Lamar Jackson's about to win a third mvp.
Caller
You can't be in the top, top echelon of quarterbacks or in the graves of all time if you don't have a great coach. Montana had Bill Walsh, Tom Brady. You need that. So he was lucky enough to get that, but he's also exceed expectations.
Don Hahn
You know, my problem with your argument. I'm sorry. My problem with your argument, Ty, is that you said there'll be no question. They'll definitively be questions.
Peter Rosenberg
There's going to be a question.
Don Hahn
Plenty of questions.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, now, again, you've. You've limited your time to watch.
Caller
But if you, if you say, okay, he may not have the strongest arm of all time, but he's got one of them. He may not be the best scrambler of all time, but he's got. He's one of them.
Don Hahn
It's true.
Caller
He's. He may not be the most clutch, but he's one of them. It's an amalgamation of all these things together.
Don Hahn
That's fair.
Caller
He's there.
Don Hahn
You add it all up.
Peter Rosenberg
He's.
Don Hahn
He's ranking on every one of those charts. It's a great point. That's a good argument.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, but it just so. Because he will have won more Super Bowls than Peyton Manning. He is clearly better than Peyton Manning. Five MVPs for Peyton Manning, right? Name a couple of his.
Don Hahn
You just mentioned you talked about open receivers, though, when Peyton Manning was playing, like it wasn't even fair watching what they were doing. They'd play in Indianapolis, you just knew he was throwing for 380 yards. Reggie Wayne would be open by.
Peter Rosenberg
There'd be no one Dungey at Coldwell like he, you know, I guess Pagano was there too, but it wasn't. It wasn't Andy Reid, who's an offensive guy on top again. I feel like I'm trying to take away, but again, we're using the championships as to drop the mic. I'm sorry. I think John Elway was better. I think Peyton Manning was better. Now, Tom Brady didn't have the. The scrambling ability, but, you know. You're telling me he's clearly better than Tom Brady.
Don Hahn
Come on.
Peter Rosenberg
Clearly better than Tom Brady.
Don Hahn
Come on. Clearly better than John. Let's go to Richard Manhattan. Hey, Richard.
Peter Rosenberg
Hi, Richard.
Caller
Don. I don't understand. Rangers is losing five, three. Saturday, three and a half minutes to go. Why do you pull the goalie? Last week the Rangers lost to Colorado. Even streng they scored a goal with a minute left to go in the game. Why do you. And then right away, Boston scores. A good team like that gets the puck. Boom, game over. At least make it fun. I don't understand it. I never will. I don't care who does it. So that's that. If I was the ESPN television programmer, I would treat Ovechkin just like Sosa and McGuire every time he scores a goal. Let's cut into the regular programming. I want to see Ovechkin. I think it's fantastic. I love what he's doing. And you, you, Dave and Kenny, the three of you. The best threesome I've ever heard. Saturday, Don, Dave and Kenny with that, with that. With JT and KeAndre Miller and then the Petersons and they're going back and forth. That was so hilarious. Then I put the game on right on tv and I had you guys on. I had the volume on the tv, but I have to listen to the three you guys now. The best game I saw all week, any sport, was Saturday night, Winnipeg at Washington. The two best teams in hockey. Did you see the game, Don?
Peter Rosenberg
Yes, I did. Very good game.
Caller
Was that one of the best games you've ever seen?
Peter Rosenberg
That was really good. Those are two of the best teams in the league. It was fantastic.
Don Hahn
Ever. Ever seen as dropping best game you've ever seen?
Peter Rosenberg
Trying to get to the goal line here.
Don Hahn
Richard. Richard, have you ever heard of Brazzers?
Caller
No.
Don Hahn
There are better threesomes out there. I'm just. I mean, listen, I. Don't get me wrong, I love what don't and the gang do, but you can find a better threesome, Richard, I promise you.
Peter Rosenberg
Now to the point about pulling the goaltender with three and a half minutes to go. And it was amazing. Rangers lose the Face off, bank scored a goal. Like 10 seconds later, you're getting an offensive draw. You're down by two goals. You don't know the next time you're going to get the opportunity to have the Face off in the zone. You need two goals. I know it seems early, but Patrick was started doing it. Everybody else is doing it. I'm not going to freak out about it. Winnipeg and Washington, it was a great regular season. One of the greatest games I ever saw. It was a great game. Let's not get crazy.
Don Hahn
It was the greatest game he's ever seen.
Peter Rosenberg
And what else? And thank you for the compliment, but you don't ask a question with no intention of hearing the answer. It does frustrate. I love him, but, you know, you asked me a question, I'm prepared to answer it. And then I got a.
Don Hahn
He just said he just didn't matter. He didn't need an answer. Let's go to Dennis in North Carolina. Hey, Dennis.
Caller
Hey, man. I think even Don the browser's comment flew over his head.
Don Hahn
You know, I. I thought I'd get more appreciation.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know what he said. I, But I didn't want to expose myself as ignorant. You did it for me.
Caller
This is a Disney company, guys.
Don Hahn
Yeah. It's not appropriate. You could figure it out. I said there are better threesomes out there, so you can.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, this is in the adult.
Don Hahn
There you go. That's what I was trying to. Because it was an interesting way to describe it. Normally people don't describe three people doing commentary.
Peter Rosenberg
I figured that's where you were going. I just didn't think you would go there.
Don Hahn
Well, why not ask Richard, though? You never know what answer you're gonna get. He might have like, Peter, Peter, Peter. I, I, I, I, I'm not a Bradley's guy. I, I've, I've always been an ex videos guy. You never know what he's gonna say. It's Richard, for God.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right. I do like oral surgery. Go ahead.
Caller
So we were talking about Nikki and Tommy, who was worse, and he always.
Don Hahn
You know, and Goodfellas, the Pesci characters. Right, right.
Caller
And all you got to do is see whose death is worse and why it was worse. I mean, it's by far Nicky.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Caller
Killed a guy with a pen. He killed a guy with a pen. And then he also had relations with.
Peter Rosenberg
His best friend's wife. Yeah.
Don Hahn
You know, well, not more than had relations. More than had relations. Made. Made her his, his girlfriend.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
And lied through his head.
Peter Rosenberg
And you're right. Not only was he, Peter, was he brutally murdered. He was brutally murdered by somebody he was friends with five minutes ago. Like, like they had to kill Tommy because he was out of control. Like, that was strategic by the family because he was starting to cause them problems.
Caller
He was a Tasmanian Devil. They had to get rid of him. And did you know that 95% of the scenes, most of the scenes between Dinero and pesci were all improv.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't, I don't doubt it. They were, they were brilliant. I was anti casino when it first came out. I'm like, this is just a Good Fellows ripoff.
Don Hahn
I think a lot of people felt.
Peter Rosenberg
Like over time I've learned to appreciate. I don't think it's as good as good, fellas. It's close, though, but it's really close.
Don Hahn
It's, it's like flirting. It's, it's flirting right there, like you dream about. Let's go to, let's go to Kyle in Denver. Hey, Kyle.
Caller
Hey, guys. What's going on? Had to call in today. I'm pretty sure today was the best.
Peter Rosenberg
Don Hein Rosenberg so far.
Don Hahn
Oh, how do you, what do you think about that? What do you that. Wow.
Caller
We got, we had Shakespeare, we had Michael K. We had Brathers, we had Bob with shoes and Greeny Freddie Keith.
Peter Rosenberg
That's right.
Caller
It was stacked.
Don Hahn
You know what? Here's why you're dead right about it. I'm gonna tell you why you're dead dead right. Because if I were to have one critique of what we've done so far, and a lot of it has not been, you know, it's not necessarily fair. We've had a lot of personal life things happen in the first month of the show, but we haven't gotten to be together a lot. And so as a result, sometimes the shows and I know this is a very Rosenberg thing to say, but Don, hear me out. Sometimes the shows have almost been too sportsy today. We were able to sit right in that sweet spot of very sports with lots of fun also. So I. Kyle, I don't necessarily disagree, but I loved yesterday's show too. I thought yesterday was a banger as well.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you. You guys are starting to cook. I love like the rolled black sleeves kind of version.
Caller
You know, I was happy to hear Michael K's voice because I'm just glad.
Peter Rosenberg
That he's still alive.
Caller
I haven't heard his show.
Peter Rosenberg
I knew when you got one to three, I don't know what you do for a living, but he didn't disappear. And. And you also have his podcast. You can listen on the app. So listen, there's other day parts besides 3 to 7. We've got a wonderful morning show from 6 to 10. Dpietro and Rothenberg wonderful with RJ and Ray contributing there as well. And then at 10 o'clock we've got Bart and Carlin right into K1 to 3. And then there's no Knicks and Rangers or Mets. Dan Grassa, hell of a lineup, jumps in from 7 to 10.
Don Hahn
So that's Don's best friend.
Peter Rosenberg
So I understand that you've got a lot going on in your life and you can't always listen live. But all this is available to you in podcast form.
Don Hahn
We have, as he's known by Alan, Javier in Queens.
Peter Rosenberg
There you go.
Don Hahn
Javier, what up, man?
Caller
I'm good, man. Thanks for taking my call.
Peter Rosenberg
Always.
Caller
I didn't want to talk some Knicks. I was at the game last night.
Don Hahn
Talk to me.
Caller
I'm very excited. But with the Super Bowl, I think with Philly, even like non sports fans know that like they booed Santa Claus and they cheered for Michael Irvin when he blew out his knee. Like, I think that Philly is known across the country, even amongst like non sports fans is like kind of tough sports city, you know.
Don Hahn
Oh, absolutely. I totally agree. That's. It's. It's definitely a known thing.
Caller
I was, I was in the red Terminal market. I was buying a sandwich from the Knicks. His very famous sandwich place had a Yankees hat on. And I wanted to buy their shirt and they were like giving me a hard time to buy the shirt. It was like kind of crazy, but like very silly. So just putting that out there with Jalen Brunson. What I wanted to ask you guys is, you know, he played. You know, he's the reason they won last night. And like I was, I was thinking about this and outside of Shaquille O'Neal, can you guys name a better free agent signing than Jalen Brunson? Not once, but twice. He went to the Mavericks and he offered them to stay for four years. 55 million and they turned it. Like Dallas is looking bad right now. Like not, not to put more dirt on their grave. But like I there. His free agent signing is one of. To me is arguably one of the best free agent signings in the history of the NBA because these guys don't really hit free agency like that other than Shaq and Shaq won the titles. That was a different thing. Shaq could have signed with anybody for any amount of money. He was going to be great. Like they took a chance on Brunson. The time they did before this was Jerome James and that did not work out right. Like this guy who performed well in the playoffs and the overpaid. But Brunson, like this signing is. I mean, I don't know what you guys think or if you can come up with another signing that's. Well, when this one has been.
Peter Rosenberg
We had this conversation last year and the names that came up, you know, the Rangers have had a lot of success with Artemi Panarin, went to a conference final a couple of times. But no, but basketball. Were any basketball ones mentioned when we started talking about like the great free agent signings of all time? No, this would have to be the best. I listen especially from a New York perspective. But if you were to go all through the NBA, how did. How did Toronto get Kawhi Leonard? Kawhi Leonard was. That was a trade and it was only the one year. But they did win a title sign.
Caller
Straight up with Golden State. But like Brunson is like a different animal. It's like this guy that like their team didn't want to sign. Like Oklahoma City wanted to keep KD Orlando wanted to keep.
Don Hahn
No, it's true. But that's what makes the Brunson one brilliant is that like no one was.
Peter Rosenberg
Expecting and we'll see if it ends up resulting in a championship. But he has almost single handedly because I don't want to take anything away from Leon Rose and and certainly Tibbs, but he's really just changed the culture of this team the way this team is perceived.
Caller
Now.
Peter Rosenberg
They haven't gotten out of the second round yet, but now he's made this place a destination. He's made the Knicks among the elite teams in the NBA and Brunson probably deserves a large, a large amount of credit for that.
Don Hahn

Peter Rosenberg
You're entitled.
Don Hahn
Thank you. It is Don Hahn and Rosenberg. All right, like you dream about that.
Peter Rosenberg
Poll is got 10 minutes left. By the way. They changed it to who's scarier, Tommy from Goodfellows or Nikki from Casino? Hell, yeah. And right now, Nikki from casino's up 51.4%.
Don Hahn
I mean, it's hard to argue with.
Peter Rosenberg
But I thought it would be more of a landslide. But it's close.
Don Hahn
No, no, but Goodfellows are more popular, too.
Peter Rosenberg
I get it, but that's not what we're asking.
Don Hahn
We got a line open 1-800-919-3776, if you want to get in on any of the topics from today. But speaking of, you brought that up, the Tommy and Nikki thing. Here's Dave in New Brunswick. Hey, Dave.
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, what's up, Pete?
Caller
What's up, guys? Hey, real quick, I just want to. I want to congratulate you guys on the show starting up. But listen, today I was. I was all upset about when you guys split up and all this stuff, whatever. But today I heard a call on.
Peter Rosenberg
A mic show that made me understand.
Caller
Why this had to happen.
Don Hahn
Oh, I can't wait. No, I don't know what you're talking about, but I can't wait. Go ahead.
Caller
All right. So he tells Mike, I'm gonna try to do him justice, the guy. Because I don't. I don't really remember. He says, mike, I love you and only you. You know, before you were with the other guys and, you know, they would get off topic and they would talk about things. I just want to hear sports. I don't want to hear the games or the jokes. And I was like, I mean, this is the candy store, baby. You know, you want to do. You don't want to laugh. You don't want to talk about real life stuff, you know, and this guy, he was going on and on. And, you know, Michael, of course, said, well, yeah, he likes to talk sports. And what. Then they probably talked about the Yankees.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know.
Caller
I had to get off the.
Don Hahn
But you know. You know what the dumb thing about it is, Dave, is that, like, he's a K fan. K loves K. Used to love. He's insulting K's show, too. K loved that show. Like, it's such a weird take.
Peter Rosenberg
Go ahead. All right. There's a. There's a lot of people that just want sports, hardcore sports for. At the time, it was three and a half hours. Our show's now four hours. Michael's two hours. I get it. But I don't want to live in a world where we can't have a little fun and kind of break from it. And I find it interesting because everybody goes back to Mike and Chris and how they invented the medium of, like, sports, radio, whatever. Nobody broke more from sports than they did. They do an Academy Award show, they would start talking about the Sopranos. Because I think the best sports talk shows, the best shows, period, are just a bunch of buddies getting together, talking. And as big a sports fans as we are, if I'm at a bar with my buddies, yeah, it's probably 80, 90% sports. But we're talking music, we're talking other, you know, movies. That's kind of what we do. So it's not your cup of tea.
Don Hahn
There's other options if you don't want to hear this. I had diarrhea. That you dream about. I don't know what to tell you. Right. Maybe you don't like entertainment and don't.
Peter Rosenberg
You want to listen to a person that dreams about that?
Don Hahn
Go to Dan in the car. What's up, Dan?
Caller
Hey, guys. Just calling in to address that audacious comment from a caller earlier that Patrick Mahomes is undoubtedly the greatest.
Don Hahn
Undoubtedly the goat.
Caller
Yeah. And so he, I don't, so he's not in the top 10. I don't think he's even the top 20 for all time passing yards, passing touchdowns, passing completions. I, I, I'm from Boston, but I'm down in New York and I just can't. I mean, that's like ridiculous. It's like my oldest son who's 19, who says that without a doubt, LeBron James is the greatest ever because he's never seen Jordan play. And so I think everyone has like this kind of like current bias towards like, sure. Who they grew up with, watching. And so, yeah, he's a fantastic quarterback and if he goes another 5, 10 years, 100% in the conversation. But I think it's just only, he's only played seven or eight years.
Peter Rosenberg
There's just no way. He's only 29. And I'm sure he's going to be up there with all the things that you said. He's not in the top 20 of this, not top 20 of that. I'm sure by the time he gets, if he continues to be healthy and plays till he's 35, 36 years old, he will be. He's a, he is an amazing quarterback. And I don't think it's that crazy to say he's the greatest quarterback you ever saw. But when you start to say, that's it done, or you're saying, well, he is because of the rings. Well, I think it's being very unfair because rings also come with the coach, comes with the talent around you circumstances. There's a lot of things that go into it besides just, oh, he's got the rings. Or I'm sorry, Joe Montana was amazing, but does that automatically mean he's the greatest ever played four for four.
Don Hahn
Can I say this, though? Here's why I do like Montana as a, as a name to throw out there at the top, though, because Montana really was a fantastic quarterback and had the four for four.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Don Hahn
You know what I'm saying?
Peter Rosenberg
No, I get it.
Don Hahn
I think he is a fair one for people to offer because you watched him and you went, oh, wow, that man throws a perfect ball.
Peter Rosenberg
But, you know, for embryo three of his Super Bowls, he had, you know, maybe the greatest football player of all time. In Jerry Rice.
Don Hahn
That's right. And then they continued to win without him.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, and Bill Walsh was one of the great coaches of all, all time.
Don Hahn
What did he ever invent?
Peter Rosenberg
You know, and you're right. And then Steve Young was able to jump in there and also win a Super Bowl. Listen, who you, who you play for matters. And I think the Buffalo Bills are a terrific coach and a team and I think they're well coached, but they're not the Kansas City Chiefs. They're not the New England Patriots. So we look at Allen not playing in a Super bowl and say, see, he can't be compared to Mahomes. Well, maybe he can be because maybe he's dragged that team farther than maybe Mahomes would if he was a Bill. And LaMar Jackson's won MVPs, which means he has been amazing in the regular season, hasn't been able to do it in the postseason. And he's only had Derrick Henry one year. So you can't just say, well, he's got, you know, he's got a Hall of Famer in the backfield. He hasn't had it the whole time of his career. And let's see where it ends up. Because Manning didn't have any championships either at 27. And look at what he was able to do post 27. And now I think Jackson could do the same thing.
Don Hahn
Tom. And each Eastchester, what do you got for us? Tom?
Caller
Hey, guys, in terms of the best free agent signings, especially in like the same realm coming out of nowhere, I think Chauncey Billups deserves a lot of consideration. Six years with the Pistons, six conference finals appearances, a championship and a runner up in game seven in another. And the Pistons really haven't been that great of a team since.
Don Hahn
You know what, it's not bad. And I will say also similar to Brunson, did anyone think prior to Chauncey Billups getting to Detroit that he was going to be getting a team to a championship? I just, it's actually not a crazy. I want. I'm trying to look at his timeline here because obviously he went to Boston, that didn't work out. And then he's in Toronto for a second and then Denver, Minnesota, and all of a sudden in O2, O3, Detroit signs him and he just goes on a run and cements an absolutely incredible career with a championship. Don, who. Where the other biggest star on that team was a defensive player who basically was a big rebounder and shot blocker. And Ben Wallace.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. And hall of Fame, hall of Frank hall of Fame career.
Don Hahn
The next. The other best offensive player on that championship team was Rip Hamilton. Ben Wallace who is nothing but defense.
Peter Rosenberg
It's.
Don Hahn
It was pretty. Listen, he wasn't as sexy a player as Jalen Brunson because Brunson has the hard nosed New York guy, hardcore defender, all of it. Plus he's sexy on offense. Billups game wasn't quite as pretty. But Don, he was a really good player who transformed that team.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. So I'm just seeing like in his time in Denver, I guess it was the lockout shortened season of a 98, 99 so 45 games but then only 13 games in 99, 2000 and then he went to Minnesota and then he started to get healthy it looked like and then it all came together. Yeah, he went to Detroit when he was 26 and then he went back to Detroit at the end of his career when he was 37. But now that is a tremendous comp. Not just the fact that he was able to win a title in Detroit, but would he have if he stayed in Minnesota or kind of bounced around. Would he have been a Hall of Fame player? Probably not.
Don Hahn
Jay, I want to give you credit Jay and Newark because you called with the same thing and you had not heard the phone call when you called.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. So you deserve it, your moment.
Caller
Yeah, I guess great minds think alike. You kind of stole my thunder there. But your last caller was absolutely correct. I thought of Tauncey as well but the backstory was that they actually chose Terrell Brandon over Chauncey Johnson wanted to stay in Minnesota. So again, you know, I'm not going to steal too much you guys time because the, the other caller just pretty much put it all out there. But Johnson and you know what? They both kind of remind me of each other. Jalen and Chauncey, they're both very blue collar, very, you know, very hard nosed players. But yeah, that, that was it. I thought that was a good comparison. But you guys are great and you are getting better with time. Like the Knicks are so nothing but continues to succeed.
Peter Rosenberg
Guys, thank you.
Don Hahn
You're a good man. Jay, thank you for the call.
Peter Rosenberg
Everybody goes back to that 04 Pistons team as the probably the last team to win without a stud. Now Bill was went to the hall of Fame but you know, did you take it? Take a look at Chucky Atkins, Eldon Campbell, Hubert Davis.
Don Hahn
Was Rashid there?
Peter Rosenberg
Don't. Yes, he was.
Don Hahn
Okay. He was a big spark for that team too when he was in Detroit.
Peter Rosenberg
And Ben Wallace was there. So then listen you don't win a championship with nobody's. But there wasn't Richard Hamilton. There wasn't that, you know, forever player. Even though Billups is in the hall of Fame, I don't think anybody is going to, you know, put him. It's Mr. Big Ranks of the. Of the greatest.
Don Hahn
Listen, he was a really good player. And guard Rip Hamilton was your score, but even Rip Hamilton being your big score. What's Hamilton's career average? 19 points. 20 points?
Peter Rosenberg
That's a good question.
Don Hahn
Ben Wallace was like a 10.12 rebound player.
Peter Rosenberg
Richard Hamilton's average points 17.1.
Don Hahn
17. And that was, he was there like gun that team. It's crazy to think about a team like that winning a championship now.
Peter Rosenberg
But they, they took advantage of the, of the small window after, you know, after the Bulls and before the Lakers and that's what Alan was talking about what might happen here. Because if you think that San Antonio is going to put it together, you know, they can go on a little bit of a run that this might, we're might be in a window where we're seeing different champions and you've got to kind of take advantage of them while you can.
Don Hahn
The Celtics are very good.
Peter Rosenberg
They're not absolutely dominant and, and yeah, absolutely. So and so there could be a couple of different teams here until somebody. And it seems like it might be the Spurs. Wemby might be the next great team. But we'll see. We'll see.
Don Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Han and Rosenberg podcast. I didn't listen to anything you just said. Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. Yo, what record is this again? I haven't heard this in forever. Harvey, what is this? Or do you just choose a bed and hit it? No, this is a two chains off his two chains record. I love this record. Forgot how much I like this song. Two chains is a coach in the celebrity game. We learned earlier today.
Peter Rosenberg
We did. Oh, by the way, the, the voting is over. And Tommy and Goodfellows won 52 to 48.
Don Hahn
Comeback. Big comeback for Tom.
Peter Rosenberg
What happens when you mention something and hey look, it's surprising. Nikki's went and now he's not like you dream about.
Don Hahn
Let's, let's talk to the people. Close out with your phone calls. 1-800-919-3776. Lewis in the truck. Hey, Louis.
Caller
Hey, what's going on guys? It's my first time call. This has been a PhD vehicle. I was called on my case show I want to say a couple of things. First of all, the PhD thing is I think you guys should name it that because you guys are like the doctors of sports radio. And the way you guys operate on these topics is like surgical. But the other thing I want to say was, is that when you. When you talked about the Nick and Nikki and Tommy thing, when Tommy died, Jimmy actually cried, man. When Nikki died, nobody even batted an eye. So I think, like, Mickey was great.
Don Hahn
You know what if we still did point God on the show? Because you're so right. Like, as bad as Tommy was.
Caller
Yeah. Jimmy still loved Jimmy.
Don Hahn
Falls apart when he dies. Cuz, like, right. Don't get me wrong, he was like, disgusted when he killed Spider. And like, he did things that were too much sometimes. But, like, he loved him, Nikki, everyone was scared of everyone, just wanted him out.
Peter Rosenberg
Tommy had an anger management problem and he was crazy. But everything he did was to support the family where Nikki just went rogue. Like, he was just. He. His ego was just way too big for him. So I.
Don Hahn
It's a great call. That's a good call.
Caller
I have one more thing, Peter, one more thing to say before you cut me off yesterday. I was trying to call in for the weekend warrior thing. And my thing is, is that Jay uso, whether he's an athlete or not, he knew before he stepped in that ring he was going to win Royal Rumble. John Cena knew he was going to lose. That's why you can't put him over any athlete for weekend. Word. That's just. That's just my opinion.
Don Hahn
I mean, I'm pretty sure Don agrees with you. Obviously Don agrees with you.
Caller
And that's my whole thing with it. Like, you can't put somebody who put up a triple double. I don't even. I don't even like LeBron James, but he. LeBron James had a better weekend, man.
Don Hahn
No, see that CBC, that's where you changed it. You can argue he had. He was more of a warrior. He didn't have a better weekend. I'm telling you. LeBron went home after that and nothing happened. The Lakers gained. Whatever. Jay uso's career completely changed. So if you want to go with the argument of LeBron's an actual warrior, Jey Uso is a performer. Okay, I understand. That's a fair argument to make. I choose not to agree, but I get it. But who had a better weekend? I'm telling you, Jey uso celebrated his life, a life accomplishment, more this weekend than LeBron's little triple double at the Garden, he does that. LeBron does that without trying, it's just down. That's called a Tuesday.
Peter Rosenberg
But it was on that particular weekend at the Garden on national television. It was a triple double for what is he, 38, 39 years old? Listen, it's not bad.
Don Hahn
Listen, it's not bad.
Peter Rosenberg
That was so Monday.
Don Hahn
So Monday, let's go to Ben, who wants to have a throwback case show moment and apropos of nothing, bring up the Yankees. What's up, Ben?
Peter Rosenberg
Hi, Ben.
Don Hahn
You know what, Don? I took the five seconds of dead air.
Caller
It's on you.
Don Hahn
Yeah, it's on you. Well, and I'm already going. Why are we getting. Why get the random who's the Yankee breakout call at 6:51 Super bowl week.
Peter Rosenberg
Last call crew suggests it's kind of. So we, we leave it open for you?
Don Hahn
No, we do, but, but, but. And I answered it. But then when I hear 4 seconds of dead air plus the topic so.
Peter Rosenberg
Random, you gotta move on.
Don Hahn
Gotta move. Thank you. Let's go to our good friend Jonathan in la. What's up, Jonathan?
Caller
Hi guys.
Peter Rosenberg
Hi.
Caller
So I'm deep cleaning my house once again because I'm getting ready for my daughter. She'll be here anytime now. And I can't stand, I can't stand to call you guys, bro. That other caller was right, man. I was listening to the case earlier because I always have my AirPods on. I'm a driver, I get home, I always have them on, always listening to all the shows since I wake up. And yeah, this guy called in saying that he just wants sports, that you guys will talk about this other nonsense. Well, let me tell you guys something, bro. I am 35 years old. Other like I used to, I did not used to listen to, to sports radio at all. And no offense, but ESPNLA is not my cup of tea. But until one day I'm a Yankee fan. One day I put the Michael K show on back in 2018. That took off, bro. That took off. And when I heard that you guys were gonna break up this a few months ago, honestly it broke my heart. Like I even posted a post on Instagram that you even liked it, Peter. And. But I thought it wasn't gonna be the same. Honestly. I love Michael K. But if I have to choose from Michael K solo to you guys, I'll go with you guys. Any capital. You guys do a hell of a. We have baby talk, we have sports talk, and look at you. I listen to your guys show and there's not even no Yankees Involved and what? One more thing, Peter. There's rumors going on that Canelo might face Jake Paul. If that happens, bro, you think Canelo kind of loses a little bit of respect like always? Fellas, great show. Love you guys. Thank you.
Don Hahn
I think he only loses respect if he somehow loses the fight. Like, if he. If he. If he beats him and crushes him, I don't know if he loses any respect. I think he'd get a ton of eyeballs. And then if he dominates and shows in a completely different class. But I'm also hearing possibilities of Canelo and Terence Crawford. There's a lot of different Canelo talk about what could happen. So let's go to CJ In Brooklyn. What's up, cj?
Caller
Hey, how's it going, guys? Peter, I had a concept for you, or just, you know, a little thought that I wanted you to expand on. And, you know, as a Giants fan, for as long as I can remember, you know, your team, Washington, has for us been an automatic two W's, right? And now that. That slips, right now we're in that position, and you guys probably see us as that going forward. And I just think there's two factors that I think that are worth noting and you guys, a turnaround. Obviously, the. The obvious one being the change of ownership with Snyder going out and his toxicity obviously affecting a lot of the franchises and the decisions that they've made over the years. And then on a more superstitious kind of point, I think the change of the name of, you know, the team, I think affected a lot of things kind of from a football gods.
Don Hahn
I have a standpoint. Totally agree with that. Yes.
Caller
And I think there was a lot of consternation over the changing of that name for years prior to, you know, the force change in 2020. But I think, you know, the team, you know, was really pushing back against, you know, for obvious reasons or for not obvious reasons, for others, that kind of name change. And I think, you know, people who were outside of football who were more political and more socially active, you know, had their preferences. And then you had old school fans.
Don Hahn
Who were, you know, and by the way, I. C.J. i had to have an argument this weekend with a fan, a friend of mine, who was like, still being like, are they going to change the name back now? Josh Harris finally stood up yesterday at a press conference of the super bowl and said, we are never changing the name back, and we like the name Commanders. We're moving forward. That's our plan. And by the way, I totally agree with the sentiment. I know a lot of people just don't like the name once they got Jaden Daniels on and started winning. I think you just move forward. Now I don't.
Peter Rosenberg
It's over.
Don Hahn
I think it's over.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
And by the way, get the idea of Redskins out of your head. I mean, the fact that people still think that's humanly possible is absurd to me. And why would you want to change anything to go backwards at this point?
Peter Rosenberg
No, you don't want to do that. Everything's good right now. It's fine. And listen, I'm not taking anything away from Daniels. He was amazing. But I think you got yourself a legitimate head coach. You got a legitimate OC gm. Berry is obviously certainly better at an OC than he was a head coach. You got a gm. New ownership. It's a fresh start. There's a lot of things going well for Washington besides the quarterback. That's why I push back on that. All of a sudden. The Giants would have been what Washington is if they had drafted Daniels.
Don Hahn
To the point of the Giants owning the commanders in the 2000s. It's currently 5, 4 and 1 giants. The tens were 13, 7 giants, 2000s were 14, 6 giants. So, yeah, it's basically been W's for a very, very long time. All right, we have Knicks basketball on the way. We'll see you tomorrow, 3:00pm right here. Don Hahn and Rosenberg, 880 New York. Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast. I don't want to know how sausage is made, man. I just want to know.

Episode: Hour 4: Brunson Comp
Release Date: February 5, 2025
The episode kicks off with a discussion surrounding Super Bowl 59, focusing on Roger Goodell's recent comments about a potential 18-game NFL schedule. Don Hahn questions the tentative language used by Goodell, highlighting skepticism about the feasibility and timing of such changes.
Peter Rosenberg expresses doubts about the NFL's claims of balanced scheduling, suggesting that the league might prioritize extending the regular season over maintaining competitive integrity.
A significant portion of the episode centers on Jalen Brunson's recent move to the New York Knicks. The hosts commend the Knicks' management for securing Brunson, emphasizing his transformative effect on the team's culture and performance.
Don Hahn draws parallels between Brunson's impact and that of former NBA stars like Chauncey Billups, highlighting the strategic moves that can redefine a franchise's trajectory.
A heated debate ensues about whether Patrick Mahomes is the greatest quarterback of all time. The hosts and callers weigh in, comparing Mahomes to legends like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Joe Montana, considering factors such as championships, individual statistics, and team dynamics.
Don and Peter argue that while Mahomes is exceptional, attributing greatness solely to him overlooks the importance of coaching, team strength, and supporting players.
The hosts engage in an entertaining comparison between characters from iconic films Goodfellas and Casino, debating who is scarier and analyzing their motivations and actions within their respective stories.
The segment highlights the nuanced portrayals of these characters and their impact on audiences, blending sports talk with broader entertainment discussions.
Throughout the episode, multiple listeners call in to share their opinions on various topics, including team strategies, player performances, and personal anecdotes related to sports fandom. Notably, discussions about the Washington Commanders' name change and Super Bowl preparations are touched upon.
Peter Rosenberg and Don Hahn conclude the episode by reflecting on the diverse topics covered, reiterating their commitment to blending sports insights with engaging conversations.
This episode of Don, Hahn & Rosenberg provides a comprehensive blend of sports analysis, player evaluations, and pop culture discussions, enriched by listener interactions and insightful commentary. Whether debating the legacy of a quarterback or analyzing impactful player signings, the hosts deliver engaging content for avid sports fans and casual listeners alike.
