Dan Grasso
Today is breaks go faster, Show's been.
Don Hahn
Good, Show's flying by. Maybe that's lots of calls to get to. I figured out now the sound page, it only took only took three hours. Yeah. Anthony, by the way, is like dripped in sweat because he's been just trying to keep this whole thing together. Yeah, he's. He's like got his finger in the socket right now. Like he's ready to go.
Dan Grasso
We got some really talented people here. We had technical issues during the Ranger game yesterday and Tom Bower saved our bacon.
Don Hahn
Shout out Tom Bauer.
Dan Grasso
Clearly Anthony working extra hard with the new studios and getting through the glitches. So you guys can hear the show without any interruption.
Don Hahn
So Jacob Perry playing all the music like he, you know, he can.
Dan Grasso
Julian and Joe are ready for the night shift with Dan Grasso who's in the building.
Don Hahn
So Dan Grasso, full grass of vehicle.
Anthony Pusick
You don't get that every day, right? I also believe that Allen is going to come with me to MSG for a little while.
Dan Grasso
This just check out.
Anthony Pusick
And check out Monday Night Raw. Now truth, listen, truth. I'm in. Truth be told, given the events the last week, I probably wouldn't be going tonight to Raw, but we did a contest and we gave away tickets to a winner and I'm supposed to go. So I'm going to go. Let's do it.
Don Hahn
And I've got two hours before I have to be ready for a Knicks game.
Anthony Pusick
So that means Alan can come with me to the suite. Eat a chicken finger like you dream about. Like you dream about and. And feel a little bit of Monday Night Raw. I'm reading now online they've. It's over 17,500 sold tonight at MSG. Packed house.
Don Hahn
Love it.
Anthony Pusick
I don't know if they're Hulkamaniacs anymore. Based on what I saw on the first episode of Raw, Netflix didn't seem like there were a lot of those left.
Don Hahn
No, I just remember he used to always use those as the capacity of the building.
Anthony Pusick
Right, Exactly. Filled with Hulkamaniacs, brother. So, no, that'll be fun. I'm curious for you to get to feel it out.
Don Hahn
I'm looking forward to it. I have not seen the building set up for wrestling.
Anthony Pusick
When was the last time? Like ever?
Don Hahn
No, no, not for. I've never been in the building for wrestling. To see what it looks like.
Anthony Pusick
It's, it's the best. Now you're going to enjoy it even if we just get to hang for a while?
Don Hahn
A little. Yeah, a little bit. A little bit. That'd be great. We want to hang with you at 800 now at 93776. Got a lot of people to get them. Let's go to Felicia in Mississippi. Hey, Felicia. Felicia, how are you?
Felicia
Hey, guys. How's it going?
Don Hahn
Good, good.
Dan Grasso
How's Mississippi today? Good.
Felicia
It's actually really pretty here today. It's like in the 60s and really sunny.
Don Hahn
It was like that here today.
Dan Grasso
Yeah.
Don Hahn
Love it. Yeah.
Felicia
So just first, real quick, Peter, I wanted to send out my condolences to you and Natalie. My husband. I can't have kids, but we have a lot of animals, so there are babies. I have a 16 year old dog. So you had me tearing up because he's, you know, he's getting up there. He's obviously up there in age already. So my heart goes out to you guys.
Anthony Pusick
Thank you. And all you can do is just try to enjoy and be present. I'm just, I'm getting choked up right now because someone. I posted an interview with Jay USO today promoting the Raw tonight and someone said, look at Rocky in the background. And 12 minutes in, Rocky just came and like plopped next to me and just sits there and wow, thank you.
Don Hahn
Give him the best life you can.
Anthony Pusick
That's.
Don Hahn
That's all you can do.
Felicia
Absolutely.
Anthony Pusick
So thank you so much for the love though. We, we feel it.
Felicia
Yeah, of course. But just real quick, guys, and forgive me, I feel silly because I, I couldn't hear you guys and it didn't dawn on me that I could like have the phone on hold and then put the app on to listen to me on hold just in silence for like an hour. So forgive me if you guys already said some of this stuff, but I'm a Jets fan do not just Islanders. So I have misery from both ends of my teams. But I'm excited about Fields. I think it's going to be. I think it's a really good change for us because it seems like a lot of times the jets, they either try to drop somebody and we know our record with drafting young QBs or we've gotten, you know, quarterbacks who are clearly past their prime, and I think Fields definitely have the talent, and it'll be cool to see him, you know, reunited with Garrett Wilson. So I just. I'm excited about it. As a Jets fan, I don't. Not saying we're going to super bowl by any means, but I'm excited.
Don Hahn
Yeah. Excited. I don't. As a Jets fan, Felicia, as. I don't. I don't know if I'd say excited. I'm very intrigued. Right. Like, I'm really interested.
Dan Grasso
That's a good word. To put it. Yeah.
Don Hahn
To see how does this work. They've got a. They've got a couple of really good running backs. And yes, the Garrett Wilson thing that she brought up is exactly why I'm. I'm really intrigued because we know Garrett wasn't happy at the end of the season. The offense, the system, the way. Just the standard around the organization. Rogers, like, a lot of it, had him disillusioned and disenchanted, and to a point where there were some rumors that he was like, you know, I don't think I want to sign here. I might want to get traded out of here instead. And you don't want that. I mean, as one of your most talented wide receivers you have had since, what, drafted since Keyshawn Johnson. And so to have somebody like this in your organization and then to have him reunite with a quarterback that he had some great success with in college, that's going to be a really interesting thing to see develop. So, yeah, I think intrigued is probably the word I'd use here.
Dan Grasso
Well, that has to be the word, because if he plays to the back of his football card, it's not going to work out. Right. He's been good, but not great. Well, he's been. I think he's been slightly above average, but he's only 26. Can this new regime of offensive coaches tap into something and he could become a star player, or will he just continue to be that? It's not quite there yet. He's 14 and 30 as a starting quarterback. That's not all on him. He was 4 and 2 last year on a good football team, but they still felt like they can do better. Doesn't look like he's going to have any competition. I mean, Tyrod Taylor. Taylor, that doesn't help you as an organization if that were to happen.
Don Hahn
Right.
Dan Grasso
So he'll be given the opportunity.
Anthony Pusick
Oh, boy. So, Jeff Passon, the old passinator.
Don Hahn
We have news.
Anthony Pusick
New York Yankees ace Garrett Cole will undergo Tommy John surgery tomorrow to repair a torn right ulnar collateral ligament and will miss the 2025 season.
Don Hahn
Well, there goes the season.
Dan Grasso
Can't say you're surprised, right?
Anthony Pusick
You can't say you're shocked, Certainly, yeah. You can't say it's not what you want.
Don Hahn
I mean, I was going to say, to quote a man that once said, it's not what you want. No, I mean, they. They could just think about this run right now. Embarrassed in the World Series. Not beaten. Not. Not defeated. Embarrassed in the World Series to a point where the team that beat you, mocked you at their parade. Mocked you. They. They auctioned the ball that Aaron Judge dropped. So that's the. This is how we began the off season. Then Juan Soto decided no one ever in the history of the world ever decided this. He did. I'd rather be a Met than a Yankee. He did that. So now that happens, then. Okay, you try to make up for it. Max Free. That's nice. Had a couple of little, like, you know, trial pieces when it comes to Bellinger. When it comes to Goldschmidt. All right, I see what you're doing. Then Giancarlo Stanton shows up and his elbows are broken. Shot gone. Can't swing a bat. Can't swing a bat. Don all off season, can't swing a bat. Done. All right, that happens. Luis Hill has a lat issue. Can't throw for months. Months. Can't throw. This is your rookie of the year. This was one of your critical starters. Can't throw. All right, well, he still got Cole. Still got freedom and. Nope, now Cole's gone. What else am I missing? Anything? Jason Dominguez can't catch a fly ball. What else am I missing? Something. Oh, DJ LeMayhue got hurt again. Breaking news. You don't have a third baseman. Like what? More. Oh, wait, I forgot. The owner said that what the Dodgers do is unfair. Forgot.
Dan Grasso
Let's add that part of it.
Don Hahn
Let's throw that out there now. Like, what next? Are they going to put names in the back of the jerseys? What next?
Anthony Pusick
Oh, that'll be good.
Don Hahn
A lot.
Anthony Pusick
What a season.
Don Hahn
This has already begun, and they haven't thrown the first pitch yet, but let's assess.
Dan Grasso
All right. Because some of the things that you listed are on the Yankees. Giancarlo. Stan's on the Yankees. They traded for him, right? They kind of knew his injury stuff. Right. Brian Cashman, say, last year, we know Stan's going to get hurt. Like, so that's kind of on them.
Don Hahn
Remember when we killed him for saying that? And he was actually right.
Dan Grasso
He was absolutely right. Shouldn't have said it, but still he was right.
Don Hahn
We were all thinking that's on.
Dan Grasso
That's on them. Cole's not on them. Pitchers get Tommy John surgery. Can't do anything about that. That's circumstances. Dominguez is kind of on them.
Anthony Pusick
Right.
Dan Grasso
If he can't play left field, that's because they went out and got a center fielder in Bellinger. And instead of getting a left fielder and leaving Dominguez in center. So that's kind of on them. Not having a third baseman is on them. So some of this is self inflicted. Soto, I don't know.
Don Hahn
That's not on them.
Dan Grasso
Unless you do find out that they wouldn't give the suite, but he would be on that again.
Don Hahn
I guess you're right.
Dan Grasso
But can we put Soto in the we're not sure category? But like some of it's on them and some of it's just circumstances. Cole is certainly circumstances. But you acquire injured players. Injured players are going to get hurt. You know, they're in a bad contract with Stanton. You know, no third baseman last year was no left fielder. Some of this is on them. But it's still a very winnable league, still winnable division. You're going to be fine, all right? It's not going to bottom out. I wasn't in love with them to begin with before Cole got hurt as far as winning a championship. But this American League is going to keep them in it. They're still equipped to make acquisitions during the deadline. I'll believe a Yankee under.500 team when I see it. I still think that you're going to be competitive despite all the issues you're talking about.
Don Hahn
But doesn't it feel like this franchise is suddenly snake bit? Something about what?
Dan Grasso
He just went to a World Series. Relax yourself, will you, please?
Don Hahn
This is where you start to lose. You just told me it's like not that difficult. So now wait, is it that that was a great run to the World Series or did they get there because everybody else sucks too?
Dan Grasso
But wait a minute.
Don Hahn
You got there and you got embarrassed.
Dan Grasso
But when you say snake bit, look.
Don Hahn
At all this stuff.
Dan Grasso
Yeah, Cole, that's. That's a. That's a tough spot heel. Yeah, well, pitchers get hurt. We get it. But you know, the lack of a third baseman, the lack of a left fielder last year, some of the issues they have with guys that are hurt because they acquire guys that have injury problems.
Don Hahn
Snake bit was the wrong Word, Eh? They've been kind of something that I don't want to say. Curse. That doesn't make sense. There's something bad. There's bad karma happening with this team with not just the injuries, but some bad decisions and just all the stuff that's going on right now. They just look like. They look like a team that just. They can't get out of their own way.
Dan Grasso
What happened?
Don Hahn
Like, they're a mess.
Dan Grasso
This is the thing when we talk about the Yankees, and I never bought into. They bought their championships because the core four they drafted well. They did everything well.
Don Hahn
All right, they built around those things.
Dan Grasso
But they did have money and they spent money. And what that money. Everybody looks at money as the big free agent acquisitions. Money gives you depth. The Yankees always, back in the day, made sure injuries weren't going to be a problem because we have an All Star sitting on the bench, just chomping at the bed. We'll go get Tim Rains, we'll get Glenn Allen Hill. We'll get Jalene Davis, we'll get Jose Canseco. We'll go out and get Roger Clemens. They always double, triple, quadruple down to make sure that if anybody got hurt, it didn't matter. But clearly they're working on a budget. That's why I think they've kind of come back down to earth in the sense that they can't back up All Stars with All Stars. So if somebody gets hurt, it's gonna hurt the organization. I think that's where the Yankees are different, honestly. Is that because of revenue sharing? Because of the issues you have spending a lot of money and Hal wants to have a budget. Now, you could argue as a fan whether he should or not, but clearly he does. So you don't have an All Star at every position. You don't have the depth on the bench. So when somebody gets hurt, you're not going to replace Garrett Cole, no matter what. That's a guy that you can't replace. But would this rotation been able to survive at 20 years ago? Would they have then go out and add the best pitcher available? 5 minutes after the news comes down? Those days are over. So you're kind of going through what a lot of other organizations go through because they now kind of treat themselves like everybody else. They don't overspend. They kind of given themselves their own little bit of a budget. And I think this is where it hurts them.
Don Hahn
The Dodgers went through this with their pitching. Kershaw was always hurt, right?
Dan Grasso
Well, they were devastated in the playoffs. Last year.
Don Hahn
And Bueller, Right. Worked out.
Dan Grasso
And Ohtani. Yeah, right.
Don Hahn
Tony was last year's news. That was. That was the big news.
Anthony Pusick
Wasn't able to pitch, and I really wasn't that effective in the playoffs.
Dan Grasso
Well, when he hurt the. What was that? The elbow or whatever on the side.
Anthony Pusick
Yeah, he never. He never got right back there.
Don Hahn
Go ahead.
Dan Grasso
I'm sorry.
Don Hahn
The shoulder, right? Wasn't the shoulder.
Dan Grasso
I remember. Yeah, I think it was the shoulder.
Anthony Pusick
Yeah. Charger now.
Don Hahn
But I'm trying to. Me, I'm trying to find the optimism as best I can. And as you were going through it all, I guess that's what I've got to do, is I've got to find the optimism in the fact that teams have endured this. This is nothing new to the sport. It's just happening right now to the Yankees, especially with a guy like Cole. It to me, though, the Dodgers had a lineup that was a killer lineup. Yankees don't have that. They don't have a killer lineup. Unless Dominguez becomes the prodigy that everybody thought he'd be. Unless Goldschmidt finds whatever he found at the end of last season. Bellinger, with comfort at center field, can. Can reach back and find that MVP form. If that stuff happens and Volpe has another good year, Jazz, you know, really does pick it up, like, whatever start. Like, if that happens, then you can overcome it because we've seen it done in the sport before.
Dan Grasso
And I.
Don Hahn
But my initial reaction is the season's over, but of course, I'm being facetious, but I.
Dan Grasso
And I. But I think a lot of Yankee fans are not when they say that. And I don't think there's enough evidence to say that they're done. The American League is not great. They do have talent. I mean, Goldschmidt can hit.
Don Hahn
Yep.
Dan Grasso
I'm a little worried at 37, but still, they picked them up for a reason. Bellinger won an MVP not that long ago. All right. Dominguez has. It's called the Martian. They don't nickname average players. We'll see if he actually comes through. All right. They do have, right now, four starters that all could be very good. And we'll see. You got guys that, you know, whether it's Warren Loisa guy, I don't know who they're going to throw out there. Nobody thought about Heel last year. He ends up winning your Rookie of the Year, and you have a general manager and I think an owner that will move the needle as far as finances, if he believes the team can.
Don Hahn
Do so can they do something with this contract for this year that gets him back to under budget with Cole if he's out for the season? Isn't there an insurance thing? They do that in other sports?
Dan Grasso
I don't think. Not in baseball.
Don Hahn
There's nothing like that.
Dan Grasso
Or the insurance coverage from the luxury tax thing? No, Michael would be able to answer that. I don't know that for a fact. Maybe Anthony can look it up. I don't think there's any relief to the threshold because the players out for the year.
Don Hahn
Because that would be the way that. Then if you said that to Hal, it's like, all right, well, this 30 million comes off the pay because we're going to get that money back from insurance. Now you'll say, all right, well, let's spend that to go.
Dan Grasso
That's the case then that's a lot of money to spend, right? I mean, that makes $36 million a year.
Don Hahn
Let's go take on a contract now that we can like a guy on expiry.
Dan Grasso
I'm not going to say they're going to be fine. But, Alan, you are equipped to overcome this. You are maybe not to the extent the Dodgers because you don't have that.
Don Hahn
Payroll in the American League. Yes, I do agree. The American League. Now, again, you know, Baltimore has pitching issues all themselves. They've got injuries as well. You know, Boston's the one team that's a bit of a wild card. What are. You know, they did. They did land a big picture in the off season. They have some special young players they're excited about. So, you know, like, that's the team to watch. So again, if you're just joining us, Jeff Passon with the report. Garrett Cole will undergo Tommy John surgery tomorrow to repair a torn right UCL. He'll miss the entire 2025 season.
Anthony Pusick
You're saying that's big news?
Don Hahn
That is bigly very.
Anthony Pusick
And maybe, just maybe you Yankee fans, as we take your calls, maybe you can just go into a season with low expectations and see if this team can get scrappy and make it a fun year for you. No, I'm not.
Don Hahn
You gave me a you people right there.
Anthony Pusick
But that's not a diss. I'm being serious. Like you go into a year, let's hope we make something happen again.
Don Hahn
Pitching wise, we know is everything in the sport. And if you're not getting pitching, you know you're in big trouble.
Anthony Pusick
Don, tell me. Now, here's the hater part of me. Don, tell me. You can't picture A situation, though, where now, because of this, obviously, we're probably going to get ourselves a healthy dose of Stroh this year, right? Tell me you can't see a situation, though, where, because he ends up in the spotlight and like a big situation, like the full nozzle gets unleashed, like, once the pressure's on and that he has a few bad outings and the media starts talking about him and John Boy and they're, they're having a conversation, you could see the whole thing just unravel.
Don Hahn
They'll be, they'll be calling for anybody from Scranton. Anybody but him. Oh, it'll be, it'll be wild. All right, let's hear from the people. 800-919-3776. Let's go to Eric and Long Beach. Eric and Long Beach. What's happening?
Dan Grasso
Hey, guys.
Don Hahn
How you doing? All right, Good. We're cooked. Yankees are cooked. It's over. I have a question, though.
Dan Grasso
Remember in the beginning, in the off.
Don Hahn
Season when Cole opted out and kind of strained. You opted out, and then they just signed them again to the same deal. You think you knew something was wrong then and after he opted out, maybe realized he could. Couldn't pass a physical or something, because that was strange. It's a great, it's a great point if you think about it, right? Because that was such a weird thing. He OPS out, it was going to force the Yankees to add a year right to the, to the contract. And the Yankees were like, no, we're good. And you thought, okay, well, he's going to be a free agent now. He's going to go out and test the market, and you know what, what's going to happen? And then all of a sudden, he just changed his mind and then opted back in and they didn't have to pay him or whatever it was that they did, but they didn't have to pay him the extra year. And he came back on very. On the same deal. Is that because he just wanted to be a Yankee? He didn't want to go through Frazier's process? Or is that because he was worried that if, if I, if I, if I get tests on this thing.
Dan Grasso
I don't know if you could see it coming like that, though, with Tommy John.
Don Hahn
I don't know that's what he was suggesting. Like, did he.
Dan Grasso
No, no. I think it's on the table, but I also think it's on the table. He just didn't want to go anywhere, and the Yankees weren't going to give him the extra year, and he just Said, all right, I could test for it, but I really don't want to leave.
Don Hahn
And the Yankees knew it, and the.
Dan Grasso
Yankees knew that he wasn't going to leave.
Don Hahn
It is interesting, though. And other teams were probably like, well, we don't know what that elbow's like, because again, last year, there was a time where you thought they might lose him for the year last year, but it ended up being where rest helped it, and it was fine. And then this year, not so good. Let's go to Ralph from Brooklyn. Hey, Ralph from Brooklyn. How are you?
Ralph
Hey, what's up, guys? So I want to talk about this whole Jared Cole think us right now. I don't know how I'm gonna even sleep tonight. We're losing him. We lost him for three and a half months in last year, this year and part of next next year. How much of it do you think is the fact that Cashman knew he wasn't really going to sign Soto and he had a short window of opportunity. Soto and Judge, one year we got to do whatever we got to do. And so they bypassed. They went for a second opinion. They were told originally he needed Tommy John, this guy in California, Dr. Elk around, whatever his name was, told him, no, he don't need it. Yeah. And so they. So they sat him for three, four months. And I, me, I'm the type, you know, he got. If you need the surgery, you need the surgery. And it now biting us in the.
Don Hahn
I don't. I don't think that he held off surgery. If you're. If the UCL is torn, it's torn. He wouldn't be able to throw a pitch. He was almost lights out in the play.
Dan Grasso
Could it have been a Tanaka situation.
Don Hahn
Where it was like just a little bit?
Dan Grasso
Just a little bit. And I remember going through that and everybody was like, well, eventually it's gonna tear. And it never did.
Don Hahn
Never did.
Dan Grasso
Now, I was talking to Michael about it earlier today, and he said, you know, if you look back at the way Tanaka pitched, he probably would have been better off getting the surgery because he never really found it again. But you don't open up the body unless it's absolutely necessary, and you don't go out and get a preemptive surgery until it happens. It happens. And Tanaka was able to pitch for years. I don't even know if he ever had it. So I don't. I don't know if it's as cut, dried as that. Where, hey, you're gonna get. This is gonna go on you so get it now. No, I'm gonna wait. I want to try to squeeze out with Soto and Jaw. I don't know if it really was ever out laid out like that. I don't know if it works that way with Tommy John because again, to knock it oh, it's gonna tear. And it never did.
Don Hahn
And it never did. No. There was a thought that it could it wasn't hanging on by a thread, you know, like it was just slight tear and anything it would have kept going.

Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. Definitely a theme on this show. Like, since. Since we've, you know, made the changes here and I. I gotta get full credit. Don To Jacob. I tried to tell people, like, he has a range when it comes to music and finding music and the right sound and all that stuff, and things that are relative that will appeal to all three of us. And I think what Peter and I have learned, and I think what a lot of people have learned, because I don't think it was as noticeable on the previous show, like, your depth and appreciation for music.
Dan Grasso
Yeah, I'm glad you said that, because I think Michael was much of a music appreciator.
Don Hahn
Yeah, you guys didn't do a lot of it.
Dan Grasso
We really didn't get that deep into the music.
Don Hahn
Right.
Dan Grasso
I wonder what the theme was there, because Rick Rubin didn't have anything to do with that.
Spike
Oh, he had a little to do with that.
Dan Grasso
A what?
Don Hahn
Well, he was. What was it at? I just had it up.
Spike
Give me one second.
Don Hahn
Okay. Well, what. Yeah, yeah, I'm some. I'm looking at, like, some of his.
Spike
Production work that he's done throughout the 80s and the 90s, and it's credited as Children of the Grave is one of those.
Dan Grasso
Yeah, but he. That came out in 1971. He would have been. He would have been. He was six. Yeah.
Don Hahn
Six years old. He's a. He was a prodigy.
Anthony Pusick
He really did. I'll tell you what, though. That guy's.
Don Hahn
It's in his. It's in his credits, though, you're saying. So he must have sampled it. Maybe.
Dan Grasso
Yeah, probably.
Don Hahn
Or you.
Anthony Pusick
What did you guys play? So I was trying to find a charger. What were you playing?
Dan Grasso
Black Sabbath, Children of the Grave.
Anthony Pusick
I don't think he was in on that, but he.
Dan Grasso
He.
Anthony Pusick
I'll tell you what. I don't think the level of how much different random stuff he did is truly, like, from. I mean, from. From Run DMC to the Dixie Chicks.
Dan Grasso
It'S like a pretty Slayer, Andrew Dice Clay. It's.
Anthony Pusick
He's done everything.
Don Hahn
Was it his idea? Aerosmith, Run dmc?
Anthony Pusick
Probably. I mean, I believe so, because that.
Don Hahn
Was one of those. They. They both said that this will never work, I think. And it worked famously.
Dan Grasso
I didn't like it, though.
Don Hahn
He didn't like it.
Anthony Pusick
Why not?
Dan Grasso
It's not good.
Anthony Pusick
Really?
Dan Grasso
Really didn't care for it?
Anthony Pusick
No, I thought it worked pretty well.
Don Hahn
I thought it worked Very well.
Anthony Pusick
I didn't even know the Aerosmith one. I only knew the. The one with the original.
Don Hahn
You mean the original?
Anthony Pusick
Yeah, yeah.
Don Hahn
Same sounds.
Anthony Pusick
The exact same. And I knew that he was.
Don Hahn
He was rapping back in the 70s with that song.
Anthony Pusick
Well, and I didn't know that. I didn't realize that when they did it, that Run and DMC were just rapping the words to the song. Yeah, I did not ever realize. That's what makes it worse.
Don Hahn
Think about those lyrics were already rap lyrics. They just weren't done by rappers. Yeah, they weren't.
Anthony Pusick
Video was so big, man.
Don Hahn
Yeah, it's true. It was.
Dan Grasso
Speaking of big, in 1986, the hip hop group Run DMC covered Walk this Way in collaboration with Aerosmith. As we know, while working on Raising Hell, Rick Rubin pulled out Toys in the Attic at shows. Run DMC had freestyled over the first few seconds of the song.
Anthony Pusick
Well, because it just comes with the drums. It just starts. The original just starts with the doom.
Dan Grasso
Yeah. Not knowing what the full song sounded like or even hearing the lyrics. So. Yep, Rick Rubin, tremendous.
Anthony Pusick
You guys, the. I've had the. I've had the pleasure. I've had. I've done a few cool things in my day. I've. I've hung a couple times at Shangri La at Rick's place.
Don Hahn
Wow.
Anthony Pusick
Yeah, it's a. It's a mic drop. It's a mic drop name Drop. Hey, where's my Drop? Here it is.
Don Hahn
But I. I saw Drop stereo.
Anthony Pusick
Yeah, actually, it's appropriate. It's the Beastie Boys. And. Yeah, I'm not kidding. The first time I went there, you go to meet. See Rick Rubin and you're invited there. And I got there, and you're greeted by someone else who is not Rick Rubin. And he's got one of those, you know, the weird. You know, the white dogs with the dreadlocks. No, you don't know those dogs. You see them in the dog show, but, like, you've never seen one in real life. They're like a white dog and they just have, like. Their fur literally looks like it's in dreads kind of.
Spike
Yeah, it's like dreaded out.
Don Hahn
Okay.
Anthony Pusick
And I see one of those dogs running around. And then I swear to you, I looked over and he, like, floated. He just appeared. Rick Rubin was just sitting there. There's an episode of Lil Dicky Show Dave where he goes to meet Rick Rubin and they make it like a whole thing. And I was like, this is not that far off from real life. He's a huge wrestling fan. That's how I got to know him.
Dan Grasso
And of course, those towards the end of his life, those records that Johnny Cash had. Oh, he did those, too.
Anthony Pusick
Who else do we forget? There's some other crazy names there, is there? Foo Fighters or Queens of the Stone. He did like a. It's a wild run that Rick river went on.
Dan Grasso
Meat Puppets. Who's good?
Don Hahn
Wolfsbane, Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Anthony Pusick
Oh, Chili Pepper. He did Massive Chili Peppers.
Don Hahn
Sir. Mix a lot.
Anthony Pusick
Sir didn't fit in. No.
Dan Grasso
There's no such thing as not fitting in.
Don Hahn
AC DC was another one. Wow. Yeah. Johnny Cash, like you mentioned.
Spike
Donnie Slayer, System of a Down. Sheryl Crow.
Anthony Pusick
Sheryl Crow, too. Yeah. He didn't.
Don Hahn
Sheryl Crow.
Anthony Pusick
Yeah.
Don Hahn
What you want to know?
Anthony Pusick
I would want to know because you know what's going to happen next. Don Allen's going to hit us with a. You know, Sheryl Crow's second album is a no Skip album. He's going to hit us with a random. No, just a random. He loves Sheryl Crow.
Don Hahn
No.
Anthony Pusick
Although I will tell you, the Sheryl Crow hits that are big hits are great records.
Don Hahn
Oh, yeah.
Anthony Pusick
All I want to do is a great popper.
Don Hahn
Yeah. That got tiresome quick.
Anthony Pusick
No, I, I, I.
Don Hahn
To me, it's Strong Enough. Great song. Like there's. There's.
Anthony Pusick
There's a strong enough. You feel because you like music. You can cry, too.
Don Hahn
Why not?
Anthony Pusick
Strong Enough.
Don Hahn
Tremendous.
Anthony Pusick
All I want to do is Too happy for you. Got that happy little chord and it's.
Don Hahn
Come on. It's just kind of corny, really.
Anthony Pusick
I think All I want to do, Don.
Don Hahn
I guarantee. I bet you she doesn't like that song.
Anthony Pusick
I got a feeling I'm not the only.
Dan Grasso
It's corn pone.
Don Hahn
It's definitely.
Anthony Pusick
I'm a fan.
Don Hahn
Yeah, it is.
Anthony Pusick
It's got a beautiful riff.
Don Hahn
800 now and 93776. Garrett Cole done for the season. Tommy John surgery awaits. Yankees without their ace. We want to hear from you. Let's go to Jonathan out in la. Jonathan in la. What's up, Jonathan?
Ralph
Hi, guys.
Don Hahn
That's how we sound. That's how we feel.
Ralph
Yeah. First things first, Peter, sorry for your laugh and hopefully your dogs and dog in heaven, man.
Anthony Pusick
Thanks.
Ralph
But, fellas, this was a literally gut punch to the stomach. I really had hope and everything was looking like it looked last year, that he was going to be good. He was going to come back by the outside. Well, he's out. But let me tell you guys one thing, man. The Dodgers won the one the World Series with Jack Flaherty, Bueller and Yamamoto. All right, that's it. And we were hitting better than the Dodgers and also the Rangers won the World Series where Montgomery and some other guys without Shirza and without the ground. I mean look, thank God the AL is not as heavy as the nl. I still have open my Yanks but yeah man, at the end of the day it's just a gut punch and I just hope that will Warren or we just get a secret gym again and just hopefully the best man. But it, it sucks man.
Don Hahn
It does. Now the thing to point out is that you mentioned right they got Jack Flaherty right from the Detroit. The Yankees wanted to get him and didn't. But that's, that's that mid season acquisition that allowed you to have at least three starters that you can go to and then Bueller, you know, got himself back by the playoffs. But you know that's, that's kind of what is now going to be on Brian Cashman's plate is to find that expiring contract guy that you can grab just to mercenary the rest of the.
Dan Grasso
Season and there's going to be a pitcher on a team that isn't going anywhere like Cease is with San Diego, right? I mean Padres have a tough start, there's going to be pitchers available and you know what? And even if Cole didn't get hurt now he's your stud we saw he'll got hurt. Maybe Schmidt doesn't live up to expectations. We know Stroman has been good in the second half. You were probably going to need another pitcher anyway so they were on the lookout of always trying to get better and they're equipped to do that. And, and there are plenty of examples. He just stated to remember no Scherzer, no deGrom for the Rangers. They win the World Series. Dodgers were decimated by injuries with their rotation still won the World Series. Although the Yankees aren't going to hit like the Dodgers hit last year.
Don Hahn
That's what I mean. Like the lineup certainly is a big. And their defense too. I mean they were great lineup could run the bases and great defense. All things that the Yankees weren't last year and they focused on being better at this year. We just got to see it. Nick and Astoria.
Dan Grasso
Hi Nick.
Don Hahn
Nick, what's happened? Nick in a story. What's happening man?
Dan Grasso
He's not there.
Don Hahn
Lost. We lost him unfortunately. That's a shame. They want to be part of that conversation we had earlier. Let's continue. This is off Topic. But Jerome in East Orange. Jerome, what's happening?
Anthony Pusick
Hey, what's going on?
Don Hahn
What's happening, man?
Ralph
Hey, listen, man, I got an issue with you guys, you know, having an issue with LeBron James saying that he's putting on a show, okay? Because Stephen A. Smith went on his show, okay, and spoke directly to LeBron James about the issue he had with him and his son. So now you're saying that it's an issue. When LeBron James stepped to Stephen A. Smith to say what his issue is, you're saying he's putting on the show. Nah, man.
Don Hahn
Stephen A.
Ralph
Put it on the show first.
Dan Grasso
But he has. He literally has a show.
Don Hahn
He has a show. That's is only one person put on a show.
Dan Grasso
This one has a show.
Ralph
Okay?
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Ralph
Okay, so. So you're saying, oh, he should have had a private conversation. It wasn't a private conversation with Stephen because he had.
Dan Grasso
You're not understanding the concept of having a show.
Anthony Pusick
But that's a fair but.
Dan Grasso
No, it's not. But why?
Anthony Pusick
Why?
Dan Grasso
Why? Because you have to undefended. You're part of the media. You have a show. That's what you do. So you don't speak privately with your opinion.
Anthony Pusick
But to the caller's point. To the caller's point, I'm defending you. But to the caller's point, if Steven's gonna do it on a TV show, what's wrong with LeBron doing it while people can see? Like what?
Dan Grasso
We don't even know what was said. It was just. The show was theatrical, maybe.
Ralph
Not about a family issue on a live.
Dan Grasso
Oh, no, no, no. It's a family. It's a public issue, man. He's on.
Anthony Pusick
They're both.
Dan Grasso
They're Lakers. He's an NBA analyst.
Don Hahn
It's not his son, it's his teammate. It's not his son, it's his teammate.
Ralph
You know what?
Don Hahn
He's an NBA player.
Ralph
Stephen A. Smith is a big boy too. You know what I mean? So he can handle it.
Anthony Pusick
Oh, totally.
Don Hahn
Nobody said he couldn't handle it, though. That's not what this is about. But all this was about was LeBron did what he did for a reason. He put himself in front of everybody and he made that confrontation very public. Cuz he wanted it to be seen. Like, I don't think I ever said that it was the wrong thing. What I said was, is that he wanted everybody to see.
Anthony Pusick
What's the caller's name?
Don Hahn
It was Jerome.
Anthony Pusick
Oh, Jerome's gone.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Anthony Pusick
To what I would say to Jerome too, is Like, I hear what he's saying. I do. But if you were at. To defend Allen's point about it being a show, these things that were said about Bronny and LeBron were not the day before. If you were that upset, you're not making the phone call the next day.
Don Hahn
Kind of my point. Like.
Anthony Pusick
Like, if, for me, if someone brought up something like. And again, I don't fully agree. It's a. Just a family issue. Because LeBron has chosen to make this a family team, very public thing.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Anthony Pusick
But if someone had said something about Natalie and I wanted to address it and I had a way to get in touch with that person, I. I'm either a. He has two. Two options. One, pick up the phone the next day and call him. Two, he gets a microphone in front of him every day. The second someone hands me a mic. Hey, guys, real quick. I'm gonna give you a really good clip. I'm gonna give you a clip. I wanna talk to Stephen A. Smith right now and cut a promo on him. Right.
Dan Grasso
The next day, if you want to.
Don Hahn
Exactly right.
Dan Grasso
But Natalie's not fair game. Bronny is. Because as Allen said, that's LeBron's teammate. They're on the Lakers.
Anthony Pusick
But it's a blurry line in the sense that he's talking about his parenting specifically. Which we all. We all did. It was part of the conversation.
Dan Grasso
But parenting in the sense of the way he is and why he's on the team. So me. It's public domain now. Again, nobody feels bad for Steven. He can handle himself. But LeBron tried to make it a spectacle. But he's not helping Bronny at all because everything's being nepotism. He's a basketball player. He's 20 years old. He's a grown man.
Don Hahn
That. That's the thing, is that you're not making it any better. And you made it about yourself. You wanted the world to see. Look at me being the big defense. I'm defending. I'm being a dad. So relatable. And it's just like these are the types of things that kind of get tiresome with him. And it happened again. That's simply as that.
Dan Grasso
We got a Schefter note.
Anthony Pusick
Oh.
Dan Grasso
What else that happened. Sources. Former Bronco quarterback Zach Wilson has reached a one year, $6 million fully guaranteed contract with the Miami Dolphins.
Anthony Pusick
Wow.
Don Hahn
Wait, he can't be QB2 there.
Dan Grasso
It's a fully guaranteed. That could grow to 10 million.
Don Hahn
What is it with the Dolphins? These former Jet quarterbacks remember Mike White. They had Mike White for a while and now they've, now they're going to go with him. Zach Wilson, if something happens to Tua, it's no way Zach Wilson, like the next guy up knowing that Tua is that guy that you know at times.
Anthony Pusick
No. If Tua has a great year next year, God willing he'll play what, 13 games. If he has a great year, God willing He plays 17. But it won't happen, probably.
Dan Grasso
I'm assuming a fully guaranteed deal that can go from 6 to 10 is based on whether he's QB3 or 2, right?
Don Hahn
Probably games played. Yeah, something like that.
Dan Grasso
Or if he wins the backup job, he elevates to $10 million a year, which is what Josh McCown made to back up Sam Darnold, if you remember.
Don Hahn
Remember that. Yeah.
Felicia

Peter Rosenberg
Hi, Alan. Hi, Don. Peter. If James Dolan offered me a ticket to the next game at Madison Square Garden and said Knicks, Rangers or St. John's do you know what I'm picking?
Dan Grasso
St. John's There you go.
Peter Rosenberg
There you go, fellas. Ovechkin, he's got 33 goals. I think he's got 13 or 14 empty nets. So he may not break Gretzky's record this year, but he will break the record for empty net goals. Now, what the Rangers did last night. I'm serious.
Dan Grasso
I know, we know.
Anthony Pusick
That's what makes it funny.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. What the Rangers did last night, two goals shorthanded on the same power play in baseball. You know what I would compare that to, fellas? Tell me if I'm wrong. A team getting hitting two grand slams in the same inning.
Dan Grasso
That's a good one. I wonder what the odds are for both.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay, now, what makes this unbelievable yesterday is imagine Yankees hitting two grand slams in the same inning and still losing by four runs. That's impossible. Impossible. Okay, now, Cole. Figure Cole for 185 innings, maybe 180 this year. Usually a team pitches 1500 innings a game. 1500 innings a year. So you need 1500 innings from your start, from your pitches. 1500. He'll give you 180. It's about 12%. It's really not that big a deal. Plus, analytically, if you factor in just like the NBA centers and the NFL running backs, starting pitchers, still important, but not nearly as important as probably even 10 years ago. So it's a great thing to have excellent dominating starting pitching. Look at the Dodgers. Dodgers didn't beat the Yankees in the World Series because of starting pitching. But if you have dominant starting pitcher, it's certainly a plus. And you know what Cashman's record is? He's always great in relief pitching. One last thing, Peter. As a kid, I used to watch roller derby. Was roller derby ever on the level, or was that like wrestling, I wonder.
Anthony Pusick
I believe roller derby derby was quote, not on the level. I believe that was a good call.
Don Hahn
Roller derby had a day.
Anthony Pusick
I missed it.
Don Hahn
It was like, remember, like in chips and like different TV shows, there'd be one episode where roller derby. Some kind of crime was happening in roller derby. It was the weirdest thing.
Dan Grasso
I knew it was there, but I never knew where to find it. But you were kind of reminded it was there. But it seems so underground.
Don Hahn
It was. It was just. I never did you did you know that there were rules and how. I really.
Dan Grasso
I would like, you know, I would watch a roller derby documentary just to find out what was the end game. What were you trying to do? Was the last one standing? Is that what it was?
Don Hahn
That was its peak, right? They had to win a peak.
Dan Grasso
Who are the hall of famers? Like, who's the Wayne Gretzky of roller derby?
Don Hahn
Well, you know what? Maybe Spike and St. Pete will know. Well, let's ask if. Let's see if Spike. If Spike knows when the height of roller derby was. You're a historian, spike?
Ralph
Yep. Late 50s.
Don Hahn
Late 50s.
Anthony Pusick
Really? I didn't know far back.
Ralph
I used to watch it like I used to watch wrestling. I. I gotta say this first. First of all, good luck and break a leg in the new place. Couple of quirks here and there. Peter, I'm with you. I. My heart's broken for your loss, and I sent Natalie and you a little message. I've been through it. It's horrible. All I suggest to you is. Is take. You must have a thousand pictures of the dogs.
Anthony Pusick
Thousand. And she looked yesterday and Natalie on her phone. On her phone had. You guys want to take a guess at how many pictures Natalie had of Rocky on her phone and that her phone recognized his photos of Rocky.
Ralph
Okay.
Anthony Pusick
She had 6,000. Oh, that's on her phone. That's just she. That doesn't include her cameras. I had 1600. So, yes, I'm excited for Maya to have those growing up, but go ahead, Spike.
Ralph
So, yeah, yeah, I. I said this to you real quick since I'm a. Obviously, I'm a dog lover. I. I've had 12 of my own dogs, and I'll be 79. So every 12 to 15 years, always had two, because, you know, to deal with it, they can play with each other. You only predeceased your last dog. So when you're ready. When you're ready. Because you know Bear's gonna go looking for Rocky for a couple of weeks. That's the way it's gonna work, usually. Unless you had them cordoned off, and I don't think you did looking at pictures of you online. All right, let me get to the sport. So my heart's with you, man.
Anthony Pusick
Thank you, buddy. I appreciate it.
Ralph
It's worth it. It's just a gut wrencher, but you a great dog, people. And my six up there are gonna be greeting him and putting the front of the line as soon as he get there.
Don Hahn
Thank you.
Ralph
So I got you covered. Okay, so here, Alan, I gotta tell you this. And one thing about Don. I showed up at a couple of Don's music events. He does a standing broad jump for his exit when he's finished.
Anthony Pusick
All right.
Ralph
With Willie Wilson and the Willies. He does it. He takes the mic, he drops the mic, and he does a standing broad jump off the stage.
Dan Grasso
It's getting harder and harder as I get older, but I. But I do appreciate that's how I like to finish off every song. Thank you for the call. We were up against it. I think we're beyond it.
Don Hahn
We're almost beyond it. Yes.
Anthony Pusick
Appreciate the love.
Don Hahn
We were trying to figure out how things work. The clock situation here is one that is definitely gonna be figured out. But this has been good by day.
Anthony Pusick
By day.
Don Hahn
By day yeah Sing it.
Dan Grasso
Right to thee more clearly to follow.
Don Hahn
Thee more nearly day by day by day Amen. Amen. I mean, that's really where we're at, but this was fun in the new studio. This is where we'll be at. Obvious the remainder. And it's great because we are breaking in all the new equipment. As you can tell, we appreciate everybody for all their efforts today here at the studio. The new studio, Good Karma Brands, and all the people that work so hard to put this together, but no one more than Anthony Pusick, who has spent the entire show not listening because all he's been doing is just trying to make sure we stayed on the air. And he did. Great job, Anthony.
Anthony Pusick
Good job.
Don Hahn
