This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg Podcast.
Peter Rosenberg
That sounds like heaven to me.
Alan Hahn
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers. 6:00 hour with Don Legreck and Peter Rosenberg. I'm Alan Hahn. 800 now 193776. Super bowl commercials weren't a big deal, were they? I mean, we had a couple. We had a couple. But the.
Peter Rosenberg
What are the ones that jump out to you? Any of them?
Alan Hahn
Well, you mentioned.
Peter Rosenberg
What?
Alan Hahn
We were just on the break and I really.
Peter Rosenberg
Crystal.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. Yeah. The Harry Met Sally remake was good.
Peter Rosenberg
I like that. And they threw in the Dunkin Donut.
Alan Hahn
Stuff with Affleck and all that. I. I love that. Like, that was so good. It was so funny.
Don Legreca
Honestly.
Alan Hahn
I know it's cheesy. No, no, I love it.
Don Legreca
I was just gonna say. I don't even remember it. I don't remember anything.
Alan Hahn
Oh.
Don Legreca
To me, commercials died whenever it was five, six years ago, seven years ago, when they started releasing them early.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, they're dead.
Don Legreca
No one waits anymore. It's. To me, there's no anticipation.
Peter Rosenberg
I saw the Billy Crystal one early.
Don Legreca
That was fun.
Peter Rosenberg
And I saw. I never even saw it last night. Did they air the Groundhog Day one with Bill Murray?
Alan Hahn
If they did, I didn't.
Peter Rosenberg
I saw that. I thought that. That one I didn't see yesterday, but I saw it earlier.
Alan Hahn
Now, the Gronk stuff you mentioned, you're right. That was just too much Gronk. How about the cowboy head guy?
Peter Rosenberg
It was too phallic for me.
Don Legreca
Oh, that was weird. There you go. I looked away. I was like, I don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
That was. What was it for? That's the problem. Couldn't tell you. I don't know.
Alan Hahn
Couldn't tell you.
Peter Rosenberg
But I did like the pickleball one with Willem Dafoe.
Alan Hahn
Oh, my God. Well, is there something about his face?
Peter Rosenberg
There is something about that.
Alan Hahn
When he smiles, he still looks wicked. He's still.
Peter Rosenberg
I think because he always looked old. Young. He has aged very well. Cause I bet you he's probably close to 80, right?
Alan Hahn
That's a great point.
Peter Rosenberg
But even when he was in platoon, he looked like he was in his 70s.
Alan Hahn
He's. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
I wonder how old he is.
Alan Hahn
I got IMDb look that one up. That's a good one. Did you see the. The David Beckham, Matt Damon one? That was good. Where he was like the long lost brother you have. He's called Other David. His parents break it. David Beckham's parents break it to him that you have a brother that you never knew about and he goes to America to meet him.
Peter Rosenberg
I think it's a.
Alan Hahn
It's a Stella.
Peter Rosenberg
I heard it talked about today. I didn't see it. My wife's got a thing for David Beckham and she was upset she missed. So I don't know when they aired it.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Because some of these things, if they're. I gotta be honest with you. I have zero interest in the pregame where I was at. It was on. I didn't really even think to glance. I just. Please kick off. So if it was any commercial leading into the game, I probably didn't see it.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And even in the game, it was. It's.
Alan Hahn
It's hard. No, I get it. But it used to be a thing. And I think Peter's right. It's not a thing anymore because you go to YouTube and you can see most of them. They spent $8 million on a commercial. It's insane.
Don Legreca
I just don't. Why release it early, drop it the day of. And then when people love it, you put it on YouTube the next day and everyone shares it. It feels so backwards to me, man.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know. Alba Dafoe will turn. How old? Just guess. July 22nd will be his birthday. He will turn.
Alan Hahn
I'm going 72.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Don Legreca
Peter Willem Dafoe.
Alan Hahn
Mm.
Don Legreca
I really don't know, but I'll go. By the way Kendrick referenced him in one of the songs last night. I'll say 70.
Alan Hahn
Good.
Peter Rosenberg
He'll be 70.
Don Legreca
I'm good at this.
Alan Hahn
Wow.
Peter Rosenberg
But he looks great.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, fantastic. He was born July 2219-5580-0919-3776. Let's go to Dave in the car. Hey, Dave. Hey, what's up, guys?
Caller Dave
I love your rant, Don. That was really good. And I just want to talk through things out here about the jets and the Giants. I'm glad the jets did that. Fly this guy in with all his ego and say, bye, we're good. Well, we'll take the hit. We'll do without, but it'll be on their terms. Now to the Giants, I want to bring you guys back in time a little bit. Jerome Bettis was leaving the Rams or he was being traded or whatever. He had lost a step. He goes to the Steelers. The Steelers decide, you know what? He's not what he used to be, but he still can. Smash mouth. They built an offensive line around him because they saw the greatness in the guy, and that's what the Giants should have done. There's absolutely no way Dabo and Shane should still have their jobs. And if McCaffrey going to the Niners and blowing it up in the NFL isn't enough to show you that you had a guy with that same capability. What I'm trying to say here, guys, they could have got some pedestrian quarterback, but if they decide to put six linemen down and build a team around greatness, they would have been a more respected and better organization. They wouldn't have had championships, perhaps with Barkley in the near future, but they would have been a winning organization. That's my position on it. And they're never going to live this down. They're never going to live it down. It wasn't about him staying with the Giants and they don't win anything. It's about you did nothing to build the most talented, respected build around the most greatest thing that was in your organization. And guess what? As a New York player, you just. We just lost one of the best guys to ever play in New York sports. That's my rant. I'll let you guys go.
Alan Hahn
Thanks. Curse of the Bambino on the Giants level.
Don Legreca
Listen, I hear Anthony in my ear not agreeing with everything that's being said here, and perhaps it was an aggressive take. But first of all, hold on. Start. For saying Saquon Barkley will end up being, respectfully to Frank Gifford, Joe Morris, Curtis Martin, he will be the greatest running back who's ever played in this market. That's the pace that he's on. He just had basically the greatest season of all time.
Alan Hahn
Curtis Martin is a whole family like Curtis Martin.
Don Legreca
Saquon's a Hall of Fame.
Alan Hahn
Well, I'm saying we know where we're going. Curtis Martin is probably the standard, is he not?
Don Legreca
If he is, Saquon will surpass Curtis Martin. Okay, I'm confident. I'm very confident now. I'm not talking about, by the way, the time spent here, because we don't know what that'll do. But I'm saying when we look at what was here, the caller's not wrong. He may be the greatest running back who's ever been in this market. And the Giants were caught up in what was the current way of thinking running backs don't matter now you look up this year, you go, I'm looking at Baltimore, I'm looking at Philadelphia, I'm looking at. It seems like running backs are kind of coming back. The question is, are you going to be the team who's early on it or are you going to be following the trends? They were following the trends of you don't spend money at safety, you don't spend money at running back.
Alan Hahn
No, but they also the head coach they hire doesn't have a use for a running back.
Don Legreca
Apparently not.
Alan Hahn
That's not his offense. That's.
Peter Rosenberg
That's basically Howard spent eight years with the jets, so you make the case in the hall of Fame. He's a Jet.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Saquon's going to go in probably, I would think, as an Eagle if he spends another six years there.
Don Legreca
Correct.
Peter Rosenberg
There's no reason why he wouldn't.
Don Legreca
But that still won't change talent wise, who he was existing in this market.
Peter Rosenberg
But again, we're losing because, yeah, running backs have become more important. But again, you don't pay for them, you don't draft them second overall. Like the whole thing goes back to they should have never drafted him in the first place if you weren't going to appreciate him and pay him. You don't draft him that high. Now Shane didn't draft him. That's probably why he felt like he was expendable. But just be mad why they were in the situation they were in because if you looked at the giants for 20, 25, yeah, it would have been sexy to bring him back. Would have made the fan base happy. It wouldn't have really helped. They still are convinced, even though many capologists have proven it wrong, that they would not have been able to bring in Burns and the other two offensive linemen which were needs. And when you look at how they ran the ball this season, as poor as they were, they did a pretty decent job running the ball, but they were never in a situation to take advantage of his talents because Gettleman and now Shane have not done a great job of building a winning organization. The Phillies were a winning. The Philly Philadelphia Eagles were a winning organization. McCaffrey going to San Francisco, hey, San Francisco thought they were close, but you know what? McCaffrey got hurt and it didn't work. Out. There's an example where it didn't work out well.
Alan Hahn
The year it did work out, they got to the Super Bowl. He was fantastic, right? He was very candidate.
Peter Rosenberg
But now it's not going to age well. And the same thing now. Philadelphia won the super bowl, so it doesn't matter. But if Saquon gets hurt next year and it's in the cap hit is a big one, it could affect them in a negative fashion, but that doesn't matter. They won the super bowl, but the Giants were never in a position to take advantage of Saquon's talents. That's what you should be ticked off about.
Alan Hahn
Moose is in Jamaica. What's up, Moose?
Caller Moose
Hey, what's good, fellas? Evening. How are we?
Peter Rosenberg
How are you? What are you doing?
Alan Hahn
What's happening?
Caller Moose
Chilling. That's what's good. So, yeah, I just like to add something to the all discussion behind the idea of the parody in the NFL. I was looking up some things. I just noticed since the 2015, 2016 season, the only two Super bowl winners to either play in the wild card round or be a wild card was in 2020 and 2021 with the Buccaneers and the Rams. The other team didn't play. I want to hear you guys discuss the need for this for the playoff spots that we have so many of them, as opposed to the importance of the regular season. Which one matters more? And that whole conversation, I want to hear your.
Alan Hahn
So what you're basically suggesting is, is that the. The extra wild cards are unnecessary because it's rare that a wild card team will get all the way to the Super Bowl. It might be rare, but it does happen. And I think to leave that door open for a team that might have had injuries in their season to cost them some wins at some point, but they're a very good team. Again, the Giants are a great example of the year that they won the super bowl. You know, 9 and 7. I mean, you can have like a year where you finally get it right towards the end. Candy tells the story all the time about the 2011 Super Bowl. They basically said like, we weren't right. We weren't healthy. But down the stretch, December, everybody got healthy and that defense suddenly got it right. And they were right. They were ready for it at that point. A whole season can get you there, but if you. If it keeps you out, it's a lost opportunity if you don't have these extra wild cards.
Peter Rosenberg
But don't you believe the idea that there's parody in the NFL is really starting to Slip away. When you look at what's happening in baseball, when you look what's happening in the NHL, that's true. Parody. Baseball's not had a repeat champion since the Yankees. That's over 20 years ago.
Alan Hahn
That's amazing.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, so. And when you see, you know, teams like the Texas Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks go to the World Series and then the next year they don't go to the play playoffs tells you that there's way more parity in baseball. There's way more parity in hockey. Basketball starting to see a little bit more parity. Football, I'm sorry. When you have the Chiefs and the Patriots basically representing the AFC for two decades, it's a myth now there isn't parity in the NFL like there used to be. I think there's way more parity in baseball and hockey than there is in football. Of the four major sports, I think right now the NFL is third and the. And probably the NBA is close.
Alan Hahn
No, the NBA. Think about it. The last repeat champion we had the Golden State Warriors.
Peter Rosenberg
Right, Right.
Alan Hahn
Like it's been, it's been a new champion for. Is it almost seven years now? Like it's been. That's the thing that I think they wanted in the NBA and you're getting it. But I also think it does hurt because the Chiefs, while you guys were tired of them, you still had an emotion about it. Right? Right. If this was a random super bowl between like the Eagles and like the Lions, you're interested because it's the Lions and there's some history there because they've never won. But if it's. I don't know, I can't just think of any other team that's already won one.
Peter Rosenberg
There's nothing but the idea of you.
Alan Hahn
Have to have an evil empire. You still. I feel you still have to have a team.
Don Legreca
Although Lions, Bills would have been dead.
Alan Hahn
Sexy because that's a rarity. One, that's one where they both looking for their legacy. That gives you an extra special story. But I'm sorry, like Suns, Bucks did not have me excited as an NBA Finals. There was nothing compelling until you watched.
Peter Rosenberg
The games and then the games. And certainly Rangers, Diamondbacks didn't do anything for anybody either.
Alan Hahn
Oh God, no.
Peter Rosenberg
Yankees, Dodgers, way more sex. Because there's sexy matchups and there's unsexy matchups. I mean, if you get a Panther, Jaguar, Super Bowl, I don't care. That's never going to be sexy. No, it'll get a huge rating, but it's Never going to be sexy.
Alan Hahn
No.
Peter Rosenberg
But what you want to do with parody is to be able to tell every fan base, hey, maybe this is your year.
Alan Hahn
You have a chance.
Peter Rosenberg
And but in the NFL now, there are still several teams, unfortunately two in this area that will have none chance. Zero.
Alan Hahn
None chance.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. So but then. And that's. And that's a problem. But there could be a baseball team that might think, hey, with all these extra wild cards, maybe we can put things together, finish a Couple of games above.500 and be in the race in September and have a reason to believe. But there are several teams that know there's no hope in Carolina this year. There's no hope in the two New York teams here. There's no hope in New England this year. Several.
Don Legreca
I mean, I maintain, by the way, and I'm not saying we can disagree on this, I still think that if we'd gotten Washington, Buffalo would have been a repeat super bowl with a rookie quarterback. I think people would have been very excited come Super Bowl Sunday. More so than a lot of people were to watch Kansas City do it again. I really do. I'm not Detroit sexier. I agree. Detroit because of the no Super Bowls.
Alan Hahn
Is sexier, I think.
Don Legreca
But the upstart quarterback against a team that hasn't ever won it. It's a repeat from 91. I think there would have been judge there. There are options here. This we got the worst case scenario, especially if you live in this market or in an NFC east market, to have to suffer through that game.
Alan Hahn
I think you're right. CT in Connecticut. Ct. Hey, how you going?
Caller Moose
How you doing? Don?
Alan Hahn
What's up?
Peter Rosenberg
What's up?
Alan Hahn
Oh, hi.
Caller Moose
So I mean you mentioned back to back camps. I forgot to mention. And one of the most, I would say high parody sports, college basketball, UConn Huskies right up 951 back to back. But I want to. Now I got you on the floor. I want to segue into St. John's a little bit. I've been kind of high on them all year. I think most of the Big east has. And not a lot of mentions on social media. Not a lot of mentions on this show. What are your thoughts on the Johnnies? Obviously the Big east is a pretty well knit organization of schools outside of Seton Hall. I think all of them have a chance this year. What are your take on the Johnnies and the win last week?
Peter Rosenberg
I love what they're doing defensively. I love the fact that they're in the top 10 and now this is their time. Listen, we Had a lot going on with the super bowl and the Knicks. There's a lot of things coming up here, but now it's college basketball's time. You're getting close to the tournament. They're a top 10 team. I've been saying it in our meetings that we need to get on board with this thing, that if St. Peter's can make a run and everybody's talking about it, can you imagine St. John's making a run? So it is a resurgence. It's a great story. They got a big time coach. I think it's a lot of fun that I think now that the super bowl is over, always looking for that compelling story. You know, the Knicks are what the Knicks are and that was a tough loss on Saturday, but they're still very good. Rangers are going to be battling for a playoff spot, but I'm telling you, when the Johnny's play and once we get to the Big east tournament, once we get to the dance, there's going to be a lot of focus on this team. So I agree they have flown under the radar and that's a bad job by us. But to defend us, there's been a lot of other things going on, but we're getting into February. Not a lot of Rangers and Knicks in February. Once Rogers is done, there's not going to be much NFL to talk about. It's going to be a St. John's time here.
Alan Hahn
I think we've got to also acknowledge something and it's only fair to say this, St. John's has not really given us enough over the years to say, like to dive into it in November and December.
Don Legreca
Correct.
Alan Hahn
Like you've got like what you had recently, especially the Friday night win, to win at Gamble. Come on, against that team down 60, they were losing that game. And yet they showed you something that night. That was a statement win. Marquette was a statement win. You needed to have a couple of statement wins. Yes, early in the season they had a couple of performances that caught your eye. But for St. John, there's been so long. It is not anymore tradition to feel like, hey, this team is good this year. But Rick, this is why you get Rick Pitino. This is why last year at the end of that season is why I went crazy on the old show saying, they got to go get Rick Pitino. He's at Iona. He's right here. You give him one more shot at it at his age to do what he's doing. They put together a great coaching staff. It took two years to get here but they have a team that plays the way New York loves, which is our gritty defensive style. They are a team you do not want to face early in the tournament. They are going to be a team that for the first time, and I can't remember, have a chance to win the Big east tournament at Madison Square Garden. That's going to be a lot of fun and they can get a very high seat in the tournament and make and give you something for the first time in a long time to talk about.
Don Legreca
In fairness, though, to anyone who hasn't covered them a lot yet, they just got back to back wins over ranked opponents. When they played Baylor earlier in the.
Alan Hahn
Season, that was out in. I think it was. Where was that? That was a tournament. It was. That game was double overtime.
Don Legreca
It was a loss, though.
Alan Hahn
An overtime loss, but it was a crazy invitational.
Don Legreca
So they lost to the first ranked team they played. In all fairness, it's an awesome story. It's been a slow build. Now we are here. This is the time and listen, I think that this could be a really fun thing over the next month.
Alan Hahn
Yes. And by the way, March 14th, we will be at the Irish exit at Moynihan Station.
Don Legreca
Oh, it's official.
Alan Hahn
Well, it's somewhat official. We could say it. So the Big east tournament at Mattis Square Garden, it's always the place to be. And on the 14th of March, we will have another one of those get out and see the people shows. The Irish exit is the name of the place at Moynihan train station. So we'll be right by the Garden and we'll be celebrating the Big east college basketball and St. John.
Don Legreca
And presumably they'll be playing that night.
Alan Hahn
I hope. They gotta have one at the prime time.
Don Legreca
No matter. No matter which day they're playing, they'll be playing the night game. Right. So you can be able to come through, hang out with us on your way to the game.
Alan Hahn
Show me. We're going. We're going. And then. Oh, yeah. Can we make it? Can we lock it in? Yes, we're all going to the game. That.
Don Legreca
I can't lock in the thing. But I. I like the sound.
Alan Hahn
I'm dragging to this one.
Don Legreca
I like the sound.
Alan Hahn
All right, pic's in.
Peter Rosenberg
So we got our third. When he's with.
Alan Hahn
Love it.
Peter Rosenberg
Now you got it.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, because he never goes to anything.
Peter Rosenberg
He's a shut.
Don Legreca
My God, he's a shut. He's full shut in.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, let me see now.
Alan Hahn
Something came up.
Peter Rosenberg
I can't make it. It's all it took.
Don Legreca
It just took one thing.
Peter Rosenberg
We want to sit, listen. It's a new show. You probably don't know how it all works yet, but this show is into everything and we have open lines always in the last hour of the show and even during the show sometimes. So if you want to talk Johnny's basketball, you want to talk college basketball, don't call and complain. We don't talk about it. Call and talk about it.
Don Legreca
Done.
Peter Rosenberg
Because we're going to be in on it. And I'm telling you now that you know that they have become a story and it's kind of slowing down just a little bit that they are going to become a topic of conversation. So this is different, man. So just jump in. We're ready. We're prepared for it.
Alan Hahn
Dom. We promoted it at our show on Friday, if you remember.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, absolutely.
Alan Hahn
We talked about how big that game was. They were playing UConn, the two time defending champs. They were playing up in stores like this was. It was on campus. Like this is. That's a tough place to play. We were talking about another statement thing and I love Patino after the game when he was asked about a statement, when he kind of laughed like, what kind of. What statement? We're a good team. We're 12th in the country.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know what else.
Alan Hahn
What kind of statement are we making now?
Peter Rosenberg
That doesn't mean they're going to make a run and win the whole thing. But.
Alan Hahn
But they could.
Peter Rosenberg
But they. Well, they certainly can win the Big east and they're. That means they probably were talking to Wally about it on Friday. Probably a two or three seed in their region.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, they could get. Yeah. Again, the Big east. People have to understand, it's just. There's not enough. The SEC is loaded this year.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah.
Alan Hahn
It's amazing how the SEC has become a basketball.
Peter Rosenberg
Auburn, Alabama is that one, two, these two hated schools and all that. So there's plenty of storylines. But we got Alan. I don't know you went through it on your show, but this kind of came up every like February March where we don't do a lot of college or any college basketball and then it becomes a big thing. But that was before St. John's was.
Alan Hahn
Into it and it's St. John's versus, like you mentioned, St. Peter's like we have had over the years, teams in the local area that do get into the tournament and then you want to get into them then. But you know, you know, on the grand scheme of things, you're not Going to spend a lot of time talking about some of these programs. But St. John's is a program that when it is at an elevated status.
Peter Rosenberg
Like it is here, we look at.
Alan Hahn
It like a pro team.
Peter Rosenberg
And I know it's a different conference, but if you were to ask me, before the college basketball season started, Rutgers, what local team are we going to be talking about to be Rutgers because they had the great recruits and Ace Bailey and all that, and they've had a really disappointing season. They lost to your Maryland Terps over the weekend. And I don't. They're not making the tournament unless they.
Alan Hahn
Get out of the league very young, you know, again. And Bailey's got a lot to learn. He's probably going to come out and be in the. Be in the draft. He'll be a lottery pick. But you could see, like, there's a lot he's got to learn yet.
Peter Rosenberg
But he. But he's so into it and that. That building's been pretty electric there. So the good on them. Even though it's been a disappointing season. Isn't it crazy? Like, isn't that. What a coincidence. There's that just. He happened. His name's Ace Bailey. There were two. There was a hockey player back in the 30s who was almost killed by Eddie Shore. And that's how the All Star Game started. Peter was to raise money for Ace Bailey, who was almost killed on the ice by Eddie Shore. He recovered and ended up having a son who was a scout for the Los Angeles Kings. His name was also Ace Bailey and He died in 9, 11. He was in one of the planes flying from Boston.
Don Legreca
That's crazy.
Alan Hahn
One of the planes that went into the tower.
Peter Rosenberg
Went into the tower that was flying from Boston to la. And so you think, how can there be another Ace Bail. There is no connection, but it's just kind of odd. And it's a nickname because I think his first name kind of sounds like Ace. I'll probably be educated on social media about it. But you think Ace Bailey. Is this another generation of. No, it's.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, but it. He's gonna be. He's gonna. They. They see him as a guy that's definitely a lottery pick. But when you watch him in the college game, you can just see there's a. There's a lot that he has to develop and he'll probably have to do it in the NBA. But, you know, it has not been the season you thought it'd be at Rutgers. But for St. John's yes. This is a team, as everybody says. Got to keep an eye on this team. With Rick Matino coaching and the way they play, they definitely feel like a team that could be on a run that we haven't seen in a long time. So we will definitely be behind it. No question about it. More recalls coming up, more to talk about with you. But Peter, you got a little fanduel for me?
Don Legreca

Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. So we have like we were just Talking about with St. John's guys, college basketball is starting to heat up. We're in February now. That means in like about what, two weeks, three weeks we're going to have like it. Now it leads into tournament season. That's going to be a lot of fun. We have the NBA All Star Weekend coming up. Now that's not what you're looking forward to because we all know that's an abomination, right? Seriously, it's a mominous so. But the good news is on the other side of the all star.
Don Legreca
Oh yeah.
Alan Hahn
28 games to go. And that now, now it's a sprint.
Don Legreca
Starts to feel like the playoffs. When you get out of the All Star.
Alan Hahn
Oh, it starts to now you're looking at your scoreboard, watching your seat because the Knicks are now, of course two and a half back of the Celtics. That was a bad game Saturday. That was a bad look Saturday. I thought Everything said after the game was the right thing. But the way they approached that game and how the Celtics sort of exposed what is the biggest concern about the Knicks, which is their size. They're not very big. That. That was shown. That was shown there. But still you're trying to see that worst. Hold on to third. They play the Pacers tomorrow night in Indiana. Pacers are four games back, so you're closest. You're still closer to second than you are to fourth. So, you know, but that's when we start looking at the scoreboard, we start setting that stuff up. That's a lot of fun. Same thing with the NHL. You got this four nations going on, which, if you're a hockey fan, you'll watch it because it's probably gonna be really good hockey. These are the best players in the league, all playing for their countries against each other. And a little round robin. I think it's a better idea than playing an All Star game anyway, because they're gonna care. You're playing for something, right? So there's a lot going on now all of a sudden in the world of sports. And that's.
Peter Rosenberg
That's what we're all about normally in the NBA, if it's any other team.
Alan Hahn
Oh, by the way, pitchers and catchers on Wednesday, which I never cared about.
Peter Rosenberg
As big a baseball fan as I am. All right, pitchers.
Alan Hahn
You catch good.
Peter Rosenberg
Now I know where they are, so I won't lose them. No, no, you' we're not anywhere.
Alan Hahn
You're not. You're a little fired up. Come on.
Don Legreca
When they play, they play pitchers and catcher.
Peter Rosenberg
When I'm a little fired up. Well, good.
Alan Hahn
Never.
Peter Rosenberg
Listen, I'm all fired up for the Mets, but you know, pitchers and catchers. I'm just telling you, no movement.
Alan Hahn
Okay, now you're not feeling it, you know, not even a wiggle.
Peter Rosenberg
Now nothing. Eat all the mango you want. It's not moving. I love what you're saying now. When normally in any NBA given team that's the three seed in the conference, you know, you're just twiddling your thumbs to the playoffs. Well, we know the Knicks don't play that game. They want to try to finish as high as they can in the standings. So their games are going to be meaningful. Normally, you know, the New York Rangers over the last couple of years, this time of year, you're like, let's just get to the playoffs. Well, their playoffs are now. Every game they play, you're five points out of a playoff spot with 27 to play. And you can look at 27 games being a lot in the NHL. It's not. With all these three point games, all these teams playing each other, it's tough to gain ground. So every game the Rangers play is going to be like a playoff game. So the two Garden teams are going to be playing meaningful basketball and hockey down the stretch. And as you said, we'll get news on Rodgers and there will be things coming out of spring training. We'll also be getting some games on our air too, as we'll be airing some spring training games and stuff. So you're going to start to feel once they actually start playing games, I.
Alan Hahn
Mean, seeing Soto in a Met jersey.
Peter Rosenberg
It'S going to be something. At bats I never got. I understand pitchers and catchers, you're that much closer. But being a hockey guy and you being a basketball guy, I didn't need baseball as much as some people. Not till Jim, if you're a football, baseball guy. Yeah, after football season's over, like, get me to baseball. But it used to, I used to always cringe, like when Mike and Amado would be like, oh, it's February. Nothing's going on. I'm like, nothing's going on. I got games every night. What are you talking about?
Alan Hahn
Exactly?
Peter Rosenberg
But not everybody's built like we are. But I do think, unlike most February's and Now you throw St. John's into the mix.
Don Legreca
Hello.
Peter Rosenberg
It does feel like it's going to be a really fun time here in the end of the winter.
Don Legreca
Way more fun than football. The funny thing is you gear up for football, like, football season is going to be good. We got to stop doing that. Let's stop until the teams here give us a reason to think it. Let's not act as if like, oh, things are really going to pick up in September.
Alan Hahn
I'm with you. I think again, as a new show, the accountability factor with our football teams needs to be at 100 this offseason.
Peter Rosenberg
You got no problem with me.
Alan Hahn
This has to. Because I do feel like there are times where we just get the hope thing built up and we start to look at it, you know, and Rosie, all the good things that could happen. And we play the win loss thing with the schedule and we start turning, finding ways to get this team into the playoffs and that it's got to stop. We have to judge all decisions with a fine tooth comb because you have a returning regime with the Giants that has not proven itself and you have a brand new regime with the jets that has no experience. We have to hold them accountable this season because it doesn't do the fans a service if we are telling them, giving them all the fluff and tell them how much fun and how good this could be because it doesn't work out that way. They need to be held accountable.
Peter Rosenberg
I can only speak for myself, but I do feel I'm guilty of this. Oh, Sam, Donald's going to work out because at some point they got to get it right.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, well, they're going to go to the playoffs with Aaron Rodgers because at some point they're going to get it right. No, I don't think they're ever going to get it right. And the Giants, until they do, until they do, until they, until they prove it. All right, I'm done with the law of averages thing. All right, until otherwise proven, this is what you are. And the Giants too. As much as it pains me to say, there's the petty wall, it's the Giants. They always seem to figure it out. Well, you know, we've got a little run here where they haven't been able to figure it out and there's no reason to believe they're going to figure it out. So you're right. Listen, you don't have to worry about holding teams accountable with me. I got no problem doing that. Even my favorite teams. But you are right. As great as football is and as much as we look forward to it, it's not going to be Unicorn or rainbows if this team, these teams are going to continue to conduct themselves the way they're conducting themselves. I don't care how good the draft.
Alan Hahn
Is.800 now a 93776. Let's keep going with the calls here. Last caller crew Tommy in Connecticut. What's up, Tommy?
Caller Tommy
What's up, Al, Don, Peter, how are we doing tonight?
Peter Rosenberg
Good.
Caller Tommy
Just want to talk a little bit of puck and I'm sure at least Al and Don want to talk to me about it. So we got, we got a bean pot tonight. I think it's awesome. You know, BC is an absolute monster. It was great that CT Ice tried to do their own thing with it. With. Yeah, I love it.
Alan Hahn
I think it's a great idea what they did.
Peter Rosenberg
Did you see the final?
Alan Hahn
The final was a great game.
Caller Tommy
It was fantastic.
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Caller Tommy
And then what are your thoughts on the four nations? I think these rosters are awesome. I think these guys are going to be playing for their, for their countries way harder than just like the stupid skills competition we used to have for the regular All Star game.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't think. I don't think they're going to be teams. They're going to be taking off in this. If they. Because if they didn't want to play they would. They didn't have to play. I don't think Finland's going to be any good. Us I think it's going to be great. Canada is going to be an absolute beast. Although I don't love their goal.
Caller Tommy
They're. They're a wagon.
Peter Rosenberg
Donnie, just look at their. Look at what was the power play we were talking about during the podcast. Anthony and Marner McKinnon McDavid. How did. I mean how did. Not scoring with that. It's incredible but it balances out by the fact that even though Hill won a Stanley Cup, I know the Aiden Hill is somebody that really puts fear into you. Can you do this still?
Alan Hahn
Can you take. All right, so it's a penalty kill. I got four out there, right. Can I go three skaters and two goalies against that power play? Can I just throw two with the net?
Peter Rosenberg
It is. It is pretty bad. And I think and we also need to mention this too is I don't as great as it's going to be. I don't know if you're a Ranger fan. He hung up or disconnected. The Rangers are sending six guys. Is JT Miller now is on Team usa?
Alan Hahn
Is this some concern?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, you know what they're going to play hard and you know who's one of the best teams in the NHL and they're sending no one. Is Washington. Now you could say maybe they'll get stale. Doesn't matter. They got a 10 point lead in the division. I think that benefits the Capitals rest. Get an older Ovechkin rested, get these guys all geared up for the run. And then you got the Rangers who are going to be playing 27 basically playoff games coming back. Kreider, Zabanejad, Fox, Trocheck, Miller, you know Vakkaninen to a lesser extent because you know he's the sixth defenseman on the team. But you know some pretty important guys are going to be going out there playing every other day representing their country. And I think USA Canada are on a collision course to go the distance here in Boston because they're starting in Montreal, then they're going to go to Boston. I wonder if that works to their advantage or disadvantage. Will they all geared up after playing some meaningful hockey and then teams like Washington be stale. Oh you're they going to be like exhausted now coming back from this emotional high of playing for Their country and then diving into essentially playoff games in the end of February.
Alan Hahn
It's rest versus rust, obviously. How many games total would you think this is going to be?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, it's over in two weeks.
Alan Hahn
It can't be a lot of games. 6. And there's not a lot of travel.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, they're starting in Montreal, like I said, and then they'll go to Boston. So, yeah, it's not travel, but you're representing your country, man. You're playing hard and all you need.
Alan Hahn
You want to be embarrassed and all.
Peter Rosenberg
You need is somebody to block a shot, break something and not be available. You gotta be holding your breath a little bit for this. But I do think representing their countries, especially in Canada. Sidney Crosby's coming off an arm injury and he's gearing himself up to play in this thing. What left does Sidney Crosby have to accomplish? All right, he scored the golden goal. He's got three Stanley Cups and four nations that nobody heard of five minutes ago.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
And he's gearing himself up and taking shots so he can be ready for Team Canada, because that's the way it is up there.
Alan Hahn
So it's a total of four games, Anthony.
Peter Rosenberg
Four games. Didn't we get to the championship?
Alan Hahn
Five games. It is four games. I am right. All right, so. So the three round, three round robin and then the two best records, championship play the champion and that's it. All right, so that's, that's not a lot of hockey. It's just. But it's intense hockey, so. But it'll be fun, I think, for the sport. It's good because your All Star game doesn't sell the sport anymore, not like it used to. And I think it's been a long time. He's going to have to figure something out too. Let's take Chris and the in season.
Peter Rosenberg
Tournament everybody cares about. They can play a four nations too, if they want.
Alan Hahn
Well, that would be unbelievable. But the problem is you'd have to have a Europe team. But I think what you just said, eventually, Peter, what's going to, I think replace the All Star game is going to be in season tournament later, like after super. And that could be a little final, being this, that kind of thing where you play it. And then the, the All Star weekend would be the championship game of the in season tournament. And I think that would make more sense. Chris, go ahead.
Caller Moose
Hey, guys, how's it going?
Alan Hahn
Good.
Peter Rosenberg
What's up?
Caller Moose
I wanted to call about Seton Hall's situation. So I don't know if you remember a Few years ago they got Holloway.
Alan Hahn
Yep.
Caller Moose
Coach Holloway from St. Peter's after the big elite eight run. I don't know if you guys have heard of the analytics website KenPom for college basketball. This is the worst Seton hall team since Ken Palm was invented. And it actually only would have been his third best team at St. Peter's so I, I loved him at St. Peter's my dad teaches over there, so we're always at the games. Obviously best, best team in school history. But Seton hall is going to have to make a tough decision at year's end to want to get your guys thought.
Alan Hahn
I mean, he signed a six year contract. They have not. It is not worked out. Didn't you guys have them on? Yeah, right. You guys had them on, I believe.
Don Legreca
I think you do.
Alan Hahn
I. Nil. They don't have a lot of money. No, it's Seton hall like it's a small Catholic school. They're not going to get a lot of money. You know, even St. John's you know, the rapole has helped them big time. Pitino and his influence has helped them big time. I don't know if you're going to get a big name coach to take that, but this was a guy that money.
Peter Rosenberg
But again, this was.
Alan Hahn
He was a great recruiter.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. But this is before nil and he was able to take St. Peter's to the elite eight.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And now you would think at least a better shot at Seton Hall.
Alan Hahn
He's got four. If he has four years left on his deal and he's like two and a half million a year or something like that. Like you're eating that money if you're that school.
Peter Rosenberg
No, you can't, you can't. The fan.
Alan Hahn
I'm sure whatever the fan base is, there's, you know, not happy.
Don Legreca
But did the guy forget how to coach?
Alan Hahn
Well, it's. Recruiting is very difficult.
Don Legreca
That's what I'm saying. It's very. That's. That's probably the challenge here. He's not able to overachieve.
Peter Rosenberg
It would be our loss. But Satan Hall's getting you. Bring back pj. Throw back.
Alan Hahn
No, we can't lose him at espn.
Don Legreca
I love PJ, by the way. This would, that would be like.
Alan Hahn
I think when you lose to Georgetown though, that's when the fan base. Can I throw everybody?
Don Legreca
I mean, can I throw something out here? Don, can I throw something out here?
Peter Rosenberg
Do it.
Don Legreca
Buck Showalter.
Peter Rosenberg
Call Buck.
Alan Hahn
Bring it back too.
Peter Rosenberg
No, you like Dick Vermeil coming back. Right? Get PJ Back, Buck.
Don Legreca
Yeah, we love Buck.
Alan Hahn
Dylan in Connecticut. Go ahead, Dylan.
Caller Moose
Hey, guys, I went to CTS last year. Do you think they should do a more like with the bean pot where they split up between. They do the first round at their home venues and then go to the Garden and like with cti?
Alan Hahn
No, no. Because the thing about being in the bean pot is playing at TD Garden. Like, that's what it's all about. Like, that's why in the Hockey east, the whole thing is getting to the championship because you want to play in the arena.
Peter Rosenberg
Right. It's not like it was special guard.
Alan Hahn
Well, it's.
Peter Rosenberg
But it's the same. It's similar. You're playing in Boston.
Alan Hahn
It's that feel. It's just something special about. And that place is packed. Like, that's what it's about. It's playing in the arena, in the, in the NHL arena and knowing you're going to have 18,000, 20,000 people at the game. And you can fill it because they will fill it. They love their hockey up there. And you know, bubc, it just feels like every year, every now and then, Northeastern will push their way in.
Peter Rosenberg
But it was something Peter said during the football. Like. Like, didn't it change a little bit with the playoff system in football, they were playing home games early on. So I. I get what he's saying. Some of these venues are awesome.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And it's not like old Boston Garden, where that was like a big deal to play there. It's. It's an arena 18,000. But it doesn't have the nostalgia that the old place had. I mean, Chris Terrari playing there. No parlaying him getting. Playing a conference final in 95 because of how good he used to play at the Garden.
Caller Moose
Remember?
Alan Hahn
Yeah. Yeah. Like I said, I think there's something special for the players about it. It's like the Big east tournament. The same thing. Come to the Big east tournament. It's all about playing in New York. It's all about playing at Madison Square Garden. The fact that you had that one day at the Garden where it's like from. From noon till midnight or even after.
Peter Rosenberg
The players, probably every game.
Alan Hahn
There's tons of games. It's all on one court. There's just something special about it. Ryan Reynolds here from Mint Mobile. I don't know if you knew this, but anyone can get the same Premium Wireless for $15 a month plan that I've been enjoying.

Game Time Brought to you by Tully Mordue Irish Whiskey because when it's game time, it's Tully time, boys. Only one local in action tonight. The NHL is on hiatus. As you know. The Knicks don't play till tomorrow, so the Nets and the Hornets is your local game at 7:30. However, I have a game for everybody to watch tonight if you're interested.
Peter Rosenberg
Do it.
Alan Hahn
But that is Game Time. Brought to you by Tully Mordew the original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cast matured Irish Whiskey. Be sure to grab a Telemar Dew or try the new Telemore Honey during tonight's action. Glasses up to enjoying Telemore Dew responsibly. Luka Doncic is probable for tonight's game between the Jazz and the Lakers. ESPN has the game. It's on 1030 though, so it's a late tilt. But I mean, Peter, you know, I mean you get the late shift tonight with the baby. You can sit up, you know, just put her right on your chest. Let her nap while you're watching for the first time. Lebron and Luca as teammates.
Don Legreca
It's a What time tip?
Alan Hahn
10:30. A little late. Little late.
Don Legreca
9:30 would have been acceptable. 10:30.
Alan Hahn
Tough for you with the.
Don Legreca
I might throw it on, though.
Alan Hahn
I mean, level of interest from you for that. Yeah.
Don Legreca
I would. One to ten.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don Legreca
Seeing Luca play game. Seven and a half game, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
Donnie, that's up there. No hockey tonight.
Peter Rosenberg
If that had been. And a 7 or an 8 o'clock tip, it would be very, very.
Alan Hahn
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
There's no 10:30. There's no shot.
Alan Hahn
Zero. None for you.
Peter Rosenberg
Zero.
Alan Hahn
Not even first quarter. What are you watching at 10:30 other than the back of your eyelids?
Peter Rosenberg
We're probably cleaning out the dvr. There's probably some shows that we have to watch that we didn't get a chance to watch.
Alan Hahn
Really.
Peter Rosenberg
And then, I mean, the Jazz suck.
Alan Hahn
They'll be up by 20, probably at the end of the quarter.
Peter Rosenberg
It's going to be a tough sell with the wife, but there's a very good chance she'll pass out. There you go. And I'll. I'll flip it on.
Alan Hahn
All right.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, more interest than I would have at any other 10:30 NBA game.
Alan Hahn
I agree. Yeah. This is an interesting one. Just to see what it looks like, so. But we have it on ESPN tonight, so I thought I'd bring that up. Meanwhile, the. The Mavericks owner, he said something that I felt like these are things that are necessary to say. They are defending themselves, like, crazy about this trade. But in the Dallas Morning News. What's his first name? It's Demont. I don't know his first name because it's not Mark Cuban anymore, obviously. But he said, in my mind, the way teams win is by focus, by having the right character, by having the right culture, having the right dedication to work as hard as possible to create a championship. And if you're not doing that, you're going to lose. If you look at the greats in the league, people you and I grew up with, Jordan Bird, Kobe, Shaq, they worked really hard every day with a singular focus to win. And if you don't have that, it doesn't work. And if you don't have that, you shouldn't be part of the Dallas Mavericks.
Peter Rosenberg
Strong. But you are trying to show your fan base why you dealt them.
Alan Hahn
That quote's gonna come back to haunt him.
Peter Rosenberg
Fine, but he's gotta. You can't sugarcoat the reason. He's giving you the reason.
Alan Hahn
Just say nothing. It's not necessary to do this.
Peter Rosenberg
But when you're getting death threats and they're marching outside your building and they're protesting, they. I can't fault an owner. He made the deal. There's a reason why the deal was made.
Alan Hahn
Don't trash the player on the way out. It's. It's classless. I. I just say we're better off with Anthony Davis, who, by the way, got hurt. He's hurt already. Going to be out for a couple of weeks. I'm not kidding.
Peter Rosenberg
No, he didn't.
Alan Hahn
Abdominal strain. He had another one in the middle of a game, non contact. He's gonna be out multiple weeks now. He won't be in the All Star Game. Guess who's replacing him? Kyrie Irving.
Don Legreca
Kyrie, Perfect.
Peter Rosenberg
I understand saying nothing, but when you're trying to defend yourself, I don't think there's anything wrong necessarily.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
Which is being honest. We all know why he was dealt, so anything he says that's not that is going to be bs.
Alan Hahn
Say less.
Peter Rosenberg
You're probably right. Lay out. But if you're going to speak, speak honestly. I guess trying to sell his fan base. Who wants him dead? Why? It happened.
Don Legreca
By the way, another takeaway from this weekend. I'm good. Respectfully. I'm good on the Jameis Winston content. Yeah, there are two kinds of people, I guess. It's not for, like. It's not that he doesn't have any sort of charisma or interesting things to say. It's just so. It's so obvious now that this is it for him and he's just going for it to be that guy.
Alan Hahn
He's gonna be on a network soon.
Don Legreca
Fox, I'm sure.
Peter Rosenberg
They've obviously.
Don Legreca
I guarantee they've already made the offer.
Alan Hahn
Richard.
Don Legreca
Same guys who have Gronk.
Alan Hahn
Richard in Manhattan. Richard.
Caller Richard
Hi, Don. Peter Allen, by the way. Some running backs. Better than Saquon even at this point. Ladamian Tomlinson, John Riggins, Frank Gifford and Curtis Martin.
Alan Hahn
We got one minute, Richard.
Peter Rosenberg
One minute.
Don Legreca
That's true, but.
Caller Richard
Go ahead, Alan. You may correct me. I've been following St. John 60 years. At the end of this week, they'll be the only team in the Northeast in the top 25. They've never sat alone. There's always been either Georgetown, Syracuse, Boston College. In the old days, Saint Bonaventure, Niagara, Holy Cross. There were always other Northeast schools up in the top 25. St. John's is going to sit alone.
Alan Hahn
You're going way back.
Caller Richard
Yeah, I don't remember. I don't ever remember St. John's being alone.
Alan Hahn
Northeast college basketball just. It's not what it used to be. There's just not. You know, UConn is the only other team and UConn is not even in the top 25 this week after losing.
Caller Richard
St. John's the best game I saw, of course, was a St. John's game Friday night. It's the best game I've seen by a New York team since October 3rd, the night that Alonzo hit the homer against Milwaukee. So four months, that was the best game in New York. The St. John don't sleep on Isaiah Hartenstein.
Alan Hahn
Not the comeback.
Caller Richard
He's 30 and five in the starting lineup.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, I don't know about best since the Knicks have had there been some.
Don Legreca
