Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers. Into this 6 o'clock hour we go. This has been a show. Like this has been, this has been a show. The debates have been flying. We've been all over the place, whether it's sports, music, movies. We've kind of hit it all, boys. And I give credit at the very beginning. There's Anthony Pusick starting the fire with his angry Anthony on the Rangers rant. So it has been fun, but I want to get. I love it. No, this is, this is what we're about and we're letting everybody know. This is our personality. You never know what you're going to get on a given day, but you know you're going to get something. But I hesitate to go here because we've been having fun, but I just saw something that is starting to trend and it go, you know, look, we're all about the, the age of the athlete and the empowerment, right? And the age of the athlete, control, quote, unquote, controlling their message and the athletes with their podcasts and they can then say what they really feel, right? Not taken out of context and all that stuff. That's not always the best thing. Draymond Green, case in point. Apparently on his podcast he said something that was so misguided and so incorrect like it's, it's not even accurate.
Peter
All right.
Don Hahn
That I don't know how you, if you just shrug and say, oh, my bad, that, like, you can't get away with that and anyone else in media can't get away with that. But he's going to. So he's talking about car, Anthony Towns not playing against the Warriors Tuesday night at the Garden. We knew that he had, he was out for personal reasons. And a lot of us knew without really being able to go public with it, because you want to wait for the family to do it, that it had to do with his girlfriend, Jordan woods, something personal that happened on her side, and he wanted to be with her because she was distraught. It was a close friend of hers that she revealed who died of breast cancer. And so he went to just, you know, they. You know, a close friend dies, everyone feels it, and you need a day. And Townes is here in la. He's going to play tonight against the Lakers. He said this morning that he appreciated the fact that the team gave him the time that he needed to just get away and tend to personal matters. Draymond Green went on his podcast and said that from what he believes, the reason why Towns didn't play was because Jimmy Butler was there. He said, quote, some wouldn't. Some would say he didn't play because Jimmy was in the building. They said, cat ain't play because Jimmy came to town. And we all know the history that he had with him in Minnesota.
Rosenberg
Oh, boy.
Don Hahn
Like, if any member of the media did that, the amount of vitriol you would receive about a careless take like that, just for your own. This whole idea that you could say, you know, I don't know, I'm just hearing, and you just throw it out there, and no one's gonna say a thing. And Draymond probably won't even acknowledge it, have nothing to say about it. He'll never be held accountable for it, but it's just reckless. It's careless. And he says, and you know what? As we know society, everybody wants to believe it because everybody wants to believe the salacious part of the story. They love that better. He just used that as an excuse. He just didn't want to face Jimmy as if he hasn't been on a basketball card against Jimmy Butler since Minnesota. So, like, this is the kind of stuff I. I get the age of empowerment. I love the fact that a lot of athletes want to have their podcast, want to have their say. They want to have takes about. About stuff in their sport, get stuff off their chest. That's great. This. Come on, man. Anybody else does this in the world, they're getting. They're getting called to the carpet. They might even lose credentials. They might even have an inability to even talk to anybody else anymore. But not Draymond, because everybody's afraid of him. So nobody's going to say a word. And he gets away with it.
Rosenberg
It's not even just, like, afraid of him. It's that. That's not really who he is. Right? He's a ball player. He's not a journalist. He's not really a talk show. He's a. He's an athlete with a podcast, he's going to.
Don Hahn
What are they going to do?
Rosenberg
You can't take the podcast away from him. I mean, if you want to criticize him, he could just say, well, listen, I'm not an announcer. I, I'm not a professional talker. I'm a. I'm a basketball player that has an opinion and I got a podcast because I want to be able to talk to my fans. There's no level of accountability for that. There way there be a level of accountability for his play on the court because this is a side hustle for him. This isn't who he is where he wants to be.
Don Hahn
When his career's over, though. Don't.
Rosenberg
When his career is over, this is.
Don Hahn
Who he wants to be. He wants to sit at the desk. Well, that's why talk after games.
Rosenberg
To hold him accountable and keep that in mind. And these networks need to keep that in mind. But unfortunately, those types of takes are probably going to get him a gig after his career is over because then he'll become a guy that is a former athlete that's now doing the side hustle of working in the media. Like he's not going to be fully committed to it to the point where there's going to be any journalistic responsibility or any responsibility whatsoever. But here's what's gutless about it. It's actually a gutless take because if he really showed guts, he would say, in my opinion, he's afraid to play Jimmy Butler. He hides behind. I'm hearing. Who are you hearing from? Other people that have the opinion that he didn't have the guts to go against Butler. If you think that, don't say, I'm hearing people say, you know what? I believe he's gutless. He's making this up because he didn't want to see Jimmy Butler, but he does. He's not strong enough for that. He's going to hide behind. I'm hearing people. Because that'll be his out, right? Oh, I didn't. I'm just saying I heard it from people, so I'm just bringing it up. I just heard you didn't have the guts to have the opinion yourself.
Alan
Has he had the opportunity since word has gotten out to apologize?
Don Hahn
This. I believe this dropped this morning.
Alan
The new.
Rosenberg
Which.
Alan
Which the pod or. I mean the, the pot or the news.
Rosenberg
It went to become public knowledge. It was the reason why he was out before the.
Don Hahn
Before the game.
Rosenberg
So you believe he was the reason when he said it?
Don Hahn
Oh, I, I think, I think he was trying to. I think he was just using it as a way. First of all, he right now is trying to fluff Jimmy as much as he can. That's all Draymond's been doing. Everything he says about Jimmy Butler is, if the guy walks on water, water turns to wine. Like, that's Jimmy Butler right now in the warriors, because he's like their last chance to make any kind of legitimate noise as a team. They know it. And so he's done nothing but just praise him constantly. And so I think this is another way to do it. Like, let's keep in mind, when Jimmy Butler was in Miami earlier this season, the Knicks went down to Miami and Cat had 44 and 13. He's so afraid of him. He dropped 44 and 13 on the heat. So, like, it just. It just Google just one second of it to say to yourself, yeah, I could do this. And it's just all in fun, and it's at Cat's expense. And a lot of times, people. Townes is a nice guy, so he's never really gonna do anything. You know, he'll just. He'll always just whatever and just move on from it. But it's just one of these things. Like, what? Somebody died, man. You know what I mean? It's one thing if he had the flu. If he was sick, you know, and he had the flu, somebody died.
Alan
If he actually.
Don Hahn
And it was close to his girlfriend of many years. Oh, it's just. Come on, man. Like, it just. But it's not about Draymond. To me. This is just. This is the dangerous place that we go with a lot of these. These players that jump on podcasts and say whatever they want. And some of it is the most ridiculous thing. Jeff Teague the other day said that. That the Knicks. If the Knicks traded Jalen Brunson for Kyrie Irving, the fans wouldn't be mad at all. I said. I responded on a post, which I rarely do. I said, Jeff Teague should be drug tested for saying that. Like, but. But he could say it and no one cares. Well, it's a player. He must know something. That's the problem.
Rosenberg
Yeah, it's.
Don Hahn
Players say things, and it's this. This weird, like, instant credibility because you're a players, you must hear things. So you're saying this with confidence, even though really what you're doing is you're just throwing blank wall and you know that it's going to get clicks.
Rosenberg
Right. Enough people are going to.
Don Hahn
That's a dangerous place.
Rosenberg
Because he's A player he must know, right? The people that he's talking to must be in the know. He has zero credibility. But to a certain circle of people, he has all the credibility they need. That's why it's really scary stuff. And we'll see if he apologizes, and we'll see if the apology ends up getting as much heat as this gets. Probably not.
Alan
But remember, we just talked about this the other day, too. This is. This is what it is to make gains in content these days. You. The loudest, the loudest, most ridiculous thing said is, is what moves around. And you want to have your clips moving around social media. I mean, honestly, it's full circle back to what. It's funny, too, because Kevin Durant just went on his show, and of course, they're buddies, but Kevin Durant was just complaining about how the negative things that just move around social media. Meanwhile, your boy whose podcast you were just on, he traffics in it to. To. To get clicks, as everybody else does.
Don Hahn
I'm not even trying to.
Alan
Not even trying to just put Draymond out there. He's keeping up with the Joneses, but it's. It's trash.
Don Hahn
Yeah, it's. That's a great point, too, kd. Everything KD just said is the problem around the sport and why there's this perception of negativity around basketball. And there it is, right there, saying something so careless like that. So meanwhile, we do have a game, though, today, and it's. It is the Knicks and the Lakers. Another national televised game for the Knicks, and they have struggled playing on national TV lately. They just lose. The last time they played the Lakers on national TV was back at the Garden last month on a Saturday night. Building was buzzing, and the Knicks were terrible. And this was before the Luka trade. Now they've got Luka and guys, I'm telling you, I've watched them closely. Luka has almost like LeBron has already played like a guy who's reverse aging. Like, he's still the numbers. He's putting up the performance. But since Lucas joined them, LeBron has looked even better, if it's possible. And it's as if Luka has injected even more life into LeBron James to a point where when you watch these two guys play together, we all know this in, in. In sports, that take teamwork, you. You know, it takes reps for a play. Like. Like, again in hockey, Don, you know, a new line made you make a trade. Guy gets on the line, you know, you're gonna need some shifts together. And kind of figure stuff out, get that chemistry so I know where he's gonna be. We understand each other. It takes reps, it takes time, it takes. Basketball is especially true with stars who are used to always having the ball in their hands. Dwayne Wade famously had to, 20 games into their first season together with LeBron, had to say, all right, I defer. You take the ball. I will be. I will be the sidekick here. I'm going to let you be the man. Because we're fighting over the ball and it's not working. With Luka and LeBron, it has been seamless from day one. The two of them, the telepathy between them, it is something to watch. They right now are the best show in basketball. And it's a strange thing to say, but it's kind of true. They could kind of help save the sport a little bit because it had been fallen off. Who's the next face? You know, Cleveland is great, but they're kind of boring. In Oklahoma City, they're kind of boring. And the Celtics are kind of boring. But it's like this. This is Showtime again and LeBron again. And this game tonight, you're going to see there'll be a lot of eyes on it because it's New York, it's la, and the Lakers are they. They just right now, they have found something with this trade. And it is something to watch. It's compelling.
Alan
I totally agree. I think it's one of the most exciting storylines for the rest of the season. I mean, I guess nationally it's probably the top storyline. You know, you've heard my feelings on Cleveland. Incredible basketball they're playing, but not a ton of people running to their TV to see what they're doing. The Celtics, honestly, I think the average person says, been there, done that, seen this team, catch you in the conference finals. I think there'll be some intrigue around the Knicks and whether they're real deal. But I think after, you know, in the West, I think the Lakers are going to be the most much watched story, followed by Golden State, because post Jimmy Butler, this Warriors team seems like they could be legit.
Don Hahn
Don, is this something that knowing how you are obviously drawn into. Into hockey in the NHL and I get it, I have a hard time balancing the two when we get to the playoffs, it's so difficult. But I love both. But like, is a Luca LeBron story enough or is it not LeBron again? It feels like it. Like LeBron James once again is here to save the NBA. LeBron James is once again the biggest story in the NBA. It's not the guy who's going to win MVP is she? Gilgis Alexander. The guy who's won three of the last four is Nikola Jokic. But, no, it's the guy that's been playing for 20 years, who's over 40. He's the one that's still going to be the top draw in this sport.
Rosenberg
But it's interesting how the narrative changes, right? Because it is the Lakers. The Lakers are always going to have eyeballs on them, for better or worse. And at the beginning of the season, it was all the, you know, the brawny stuff. It just looked ugly.
Don Hahn
Yeah, you're right.
Rosenberg
It didn't look like the right thing to do, and it was kind of like a joke. And now it's kind of become a redemption story where it's about. It's about LeBron in a different way. We thought that, you know, life. Who's gonna be the new face of the NBA? As if we're saying that the LeBron James era is over. And now there's kind of an underdog of. An underdog of LeBron to now finding another reason to kind of be engaged by this kind of ageless wonder. It kind of gives you another reason to root for him. I. I wasn't necessarily a fan of him, but there is a quality right now of this Laker story that's underdog enough, where it just becomes really interesting. Even more so than I think it's ever been for him.
Don Hahn
An underdog. LeBron James, the underdog story. It's true, though.
Rosenberg
I mean, there are two seed.
Don Hahn
They are.
Rosenberg
You remember the conversations the beginning of the year or where it just like they look like they were done.
Alan
Oh, I was. I was having. I was enjoying those conversations. I was supporting those conversations.
Rosenberg
Now, you're the person to ask, then you were somebody that was outwardly rooting against the Lakers because of forcing, you know, brawny down our throat and everything. I mean, do you have you turned around on is this interesting enough where you want to see this through? Oh, yeah. Positive way. Or are you still rooting against them?
Alan
No, no, I. At this point, listen, it'll pain me to see J.J. redick do well. I would love his NBA career to completely flame out, but. Well, listen, it doesn't go away. That's not. That's not how this rivalry works. But at the same time, I, you know, even though I pushed back on Allen in terms of just enjoy greatness with the Chiefs because they made me sick to my Stomach. In the case of LeBron James and the Lakers. I like when the Lakers are good. I, as a Celtics fan, I want to play the Lakers in the finals every time like that. That, to me, is when the NBA is at its most fun. And I want Dodgers, and I just want to see this. This story play out. If Luka and LeBron are that great together. It's just a random intergenerational sort of superstar story I did not have on my bingo card.
Rosenberg
You know, that's. That's interesting you said that. It just popped into my head. And then you said, you know, Dodgers, Yankees, we just had Dodgers, Yankees, World Series. That's like the quintessential World Series, right? Lakers, Celtics would be the quintessential final same thing, right? I mean, it was just every eyeballs old. I mean, listen, no, no disrespect to the Knicks, but I think from a national perspective, because of the history, even though there's. There's history between Knicks and Lakers, but more relevant history of Knicks, of Lakers, Celtics, though, that would pop much like the Yankees and the Dodgers.
Don Hahn
Yeah, no, no, that'll get you again. Of course, everybody wants the ratings and everybody wants to talk about the ratings and all that stuff, but that's what gets you the sizzle. See, to me, it's about the sizzle. I could care less about ratings. Like, that's not important to me because it doesn't put anything in my pocket. For me, it's the sizzle. What is going to get me motivated, Like, I'm fired up to see it. I want to watch it. And if my team's not involved, what makes me say, yeah, but I need to see this? And it's that, like, it is definitely that there is something to be said about that matchup for, for all the myriad reasons why Lakers, Celtics is just the start, but it's LeBron. It's. It's the Luca LeBron story. It's. Can the Celtics repeat for the first time since 1969? Think about how long ago that was. You know, there's a lot of little things here that make that more of a sizzle type Finals then. And no offense, but I'm telling you it will not have the same appeal, even though the records tell you it should. Thunder, Cavs will just not have sizzle. Be really entertaining, but it's not having sizzle.
Rosenberg
Maybe. Maybe I'm off. You guys. Could that. That hits like, like Rangers, Diamondbacks did in the World Series two years ago?
Don Hahn
It does.
Rosenberg
I'm sorry, it's that's not going to do for me. And you know, NBA's fourth for me. You know, I'm watching regardless. But I'm sorry, the Lakers and Celtics is going to have me in every game interest. If you give me Cavaliers OKC again, great story. You know, neither have been good for a long time, obviously since LeBron with the Cavaliers and OKC got to go back to Seattle. Last time they won a championship. So there's some interest there. That's not sexy. They're sexy and there's not. Right.
Don Hahn
If you're getting Cavs, Thunder and they're head to head with the Stanley Cup Finals. You're watching Stanley cup finals and you're asking me what happened in the NBA Finals. Right. Like that's what you're doing. What happened in that game? And I love both. I had, I probably have the channel surf a little bit, but I gotta be honest with you, if the Stanley cup final has, has something in it, if it's, you know, Vechkin's in it, if McDate like last year, McDavid, I'm all in. I was watching that. Like there's certain things that if that has more sizzle, I'm in on it. And that's not, that's just a reality today.
Alan
It's not a knock and listen, SGA and Donovan, there'd be fun players in great place, great players to watch. But the fact is everyone knows this. If it's okc, Cleveland, those, those will be, those will be record low numbers. I mean, I mean I'm not saying all time, but looking back at the last few years, those numbers will be down. It's just, it's just a fact.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Rosenberg
So it's kind of curious. So to me, I'd have trouble coming up with a hockey one because the ones in hockey now, they share the same conference. So it would be an impossibility. So I'd have to think about the hockey one. But if baseball, we all agree Dodgers, Yankees, that's the pinnacle. Pinnacle on the NBA would be Lakers, Celtics. Yes, I think pinnacle in football, Cowboys, Steelers, history. Two nationally followed teams, different conferences. I don't think it gets sexier than that. I.
Alan
That's a really.
Don Hahn
Football.
Alan
Isn't it funny? Football's the hardest one because you don't.
Rosenberg
Need sexy to get a rating, obviously.
Alan
Right.
Rosenberg
But could it get sexier than that? Honestly? Maybe. Maybe I'm showing my age.
Don Hahn
I gotta, I. Yeah. But as far as rating chief still will get you the bigger rating. But if you're talking about sizzle you know, I think we're out of that era where you go with, you know, Cowboy, Steelers. Because of the history. I don't know. I think that exists anymore.
Alan
What you're looking for more. I think Don. The would have been. No, no. How about this? I think the sexiest game that would. You guys probably won't disagree. The sexiest game available at this moment would be Buffalo, Detroit. I think that has the most intrigue. Getting to see one of those.
Don Hahn
But there's no last year.
Rosenberg
Yeah, you're losing the history, but you're also having that neither team has ever won a Super Bowl. I. Yeah, I understand that football's weird, but. But I do think history is important. Plus, I think the Cowboys and Steelers are one two most popular teams in the country. So to have those two teams play each other.
Don Hahn
Yep.
Rosenberg
With the history, I don't know a hockey comp. Because again, you can go like you would say, Canadiens, Maple Leafs. But they're in the same conference now, right?
Don Hahn
No, you can't do that.
Rosenberg
So now you got to think it.
Don Hahn
Has to be Rangers. Don't you think it has to be Rangers and then someone.
Rosenberg
So I guess what Rangers. Blackhawks is the only one. Rangers.
Don Hahn
Kings.
Rosenberg
I'm sorry, the Kings are in la. They're not sexy.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Rosenberg
Blackhawks aren't sexy now because they're bad. But back in 2014, I thought really hurt the NHL or the Kings winning over the Black. If you had a Blackhawk Ranger. Because you had a Bruin Blackhawk and that was good.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Rosenberg
But if you want to go Stars, would it be sexy to you, Peter, because you're, you're, you're, You're a fan, but you're not. You're not a hockey guy. Like, baby.
Alan
Yep.
Rosenberg
Would Ovechkin McDavid do anything for you? Oilers, Capitals, Again, not necessarily dead sexy teams, but if you had an Ovechkin McDavid final, if you had a cross. Sidney Crosby McDavid, Penguins.
Don Hahn
Penguins, Oilers.
Rosenberg
Would that do it?
Alan
Well, remove Penguins from it. Obviously, that's not.
Rosenberg
Well, the only reason I brought up Ovechi, because if he breaks the record, I think there is a sexiness to seeing if he can win a cup while breaking the record in the same.
Alan
I think that's the sexiest thing out there this year. Obviously, again, I have a little bit of a bias. Grew up, of course, going to Caps games all the times. All my friends from home love the cap, so I certainly have extra incentive there. But I think the star power of at this moment you get Ovechkin, McDavid. That is a, that is a sexy thing. And I will say I think that we may see a little bit of carryover from the Four nations into the NHL playoffs this year. I think we hope so.
Don Hahn
The physicality, yeah, if you're the NHL, you're going to allow some of that physicality. You have to. Sorry.

You don't wake up dreaming of McDonald's.
Don Hahn
Fries, you wake up dreaming of McDonald's hash browns. McDonald's breakfast comes first thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Alan
I didn't listen to anything you just said.
Don Hahn
Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. This is what happens when we have arguments about music is it leads you to having to say bad things about good music.
Rosenberg
Oh, I love Steve.
Don Hahn
You're trying to make your point. Still. He dance very good.
Rosenberg
No, but I just don't think they're more relevant than the Eagles to a younger generation.
Don Hahn
No, I don't think so either. But this is more groove music and this is more relatable. It goes beyond. Like, this might be a little more transcendent. You can, you know, it's sampleable. I do think there is something about that that is part of this conversation for whatever reason. Some NFL news, Don. We're seeing this more and more. So Joey Bosa we told you about, he's been cut by the Chargers. He's out there. They also have to deal with Khalil Mack. And I think the plan is to keep Mack and sign him at a different deal. But Bosa might be gone. Like, he might be done. So there's a guy talking about a great edge rusher who could be available, but this is a bit of a surprise. The Cincinnati Bengals are. Are letting Trey Hendrickson. You talk about a guy who's one of the best at getting to the quarterback. They're letting him seek a trade. And he even said it's been an honor and privilege to represent Cincinnati over the last four years. The NFL sack leader Joe Burrow can't be happy about this. Now, obviously he's on the defensive side, but still, that's an odd one. And there's a guy that everybody's going to want. So you got Miles Garrett, you got Hendrickson, there's some big names. Bosa available there. And then the wide receiver market. Don, there's a ton of quality veteran wide receivers. And the Giants, who have themselves a star, a young star in Malik Neighbors. How do you not get one of these guys?
Rosenberg
Yeah. And it just depends on whether you can get those guys to want to play in. Will it be a transitional period of quarterback or, hey, come play with Aaron Rodgers his last year. Do you see the way he played in the second half against with the jets and you know, convince those guys to get there. And then you lock in maybe a Metcalf. Long term. You've got neighbors. Metcalf got your running back and Tracy.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Rosenberg
And then you draft the quarterback at three or even trade up to one to get Ward and then transition into Ward and make sure that he's got some real lethal weapons in his first year as a starter to take advantage of. I think that's what the Giants are looking at in the reasoning to go and kick the tires on a veteran quarterback. Hey, if I can get this guy and then get him receivers. The problem with Stafford was he was going to cost you $50 million a year which might take. He would be like anybody for these guys. But if you get Rodgers cheap, you're not going to have to pay your rookie quarterback. Now you can be in the market to really make some splashes with weapons.
Don Hahn
Think about that too. You help a young quarterback by getting them good receivers, right? Guys who know how to get open, guys who, who are versatile type players. So I'm really curious to see there they sounds like they're going to be busy when the when business opens but there's a lot of options out there for them to pursue. Now on the NHL side we have the trade deadline tomorrow and there's a report now that the Rangers after making the move with Riley Smith they got a third round pick. They took that third round pick and apparently are flipping it to Vancouver. I'm right with Vancouver, right?
Rosenberg
Carson Suchi and yeah he's big defenseman.
Don Hahn
Big lefty defense with a year left on his contract but he's a vet. But still you like that.
Rosenberg
I. Well here's why I like it and don't like it. I don't like it because this really smells like we're not going to see Adam Fox again this year. And you know he had the upper body injury put on injured reserve. You go out and, and you get a defenseman after getting a defenseman in return with, with the han in the deal you made with Colorado. So why are you getting all these extra defensemen? You never, you never have enough defensemen. Those guys get hurt all the time.
Don Hahn
Aren't those guys depth guys though, right? You're talking about guys that are going to be third pair, right? Dahan and and such. He probably are third pair of guys.
Rosenberg
No, well, I don't know where such he plays. I mean for who are you going to take Vodka nine and out. He's also a left handed shot. He's actually played pretty well. Zach Jones, he's playing in your in PP1 right now. He's your first power play.
Don Hahn
So he's coming after Fox's replacement, you.
Rosenberg
Know so, but so I don't see who's necessarily Borgin I think has been playing terrific. He had a shorthand goal the other night. He's been blocking shots. Keandre Miller isn't going like so yeah they're all depth guys but it also tells you that One of your depth guys like Zach Jones probably going to be on the, on the ice the rest of the year because I don't know if Adam Fox is going to come back. Listen, he's a negative player this year. I think he's a minus 13 in Vancouver, but he's a plus player his whole career in Seattle he was a good player. As you said, he's big. You never have enough defenseman. Another year left on his contract. They have reworked this entire defense. You know, Gane obviously is lingering. Gane is Truba and for a third round pick that you just got for Riley Smith, who I didn't really think had a future here. It's never a bad thing to be adding defensemen and who knows what else is going to happen between now and 3 o'clock tomorrow when the deadline hits. Are they going to use one of these defensemen to move for something else? I still think there's a chance Crider can get dealt. He's on ir but he's been skating feeling as he could be activated at any time. So is he being held out because of the back or is he being held out because. Because they're looking for a trade partner? Yeah, don't know. But I think there's still other moves to be made here before we hit 3 o'clock tomorrow.
Don Hahn
It's going to be busy and we'll be right on the air for it and have all the breakdown of any more moves to be made including on the Islander side of things. Don. I mean nothing's happened yet but boy, Brock Nelson and the emotions that he showed the other night, it's almost like he kind of knows, right?
Rosenberg
Yeah. And in case you missed it, he was. Shannon Hogan was interviewed him after the game. That was a big win against Winnipeg. Way to bounce back. Second of back to backs, lose a tough game to the Rangers, beat the best team in the NHL in your building. And he was interviewed not just for TV but also in the arena. So the fans and. And you saw he got emotional. It's a great place to play. That building, that organization. He'd been there his entire career. It'll be tough to see him go. But at this point, even with that win, I just don't see the Islanders a making the playoffs and if for some reason they did, I don't see a run in them. So if you've got assets to move, man, I think it probably makes sense. Although it hurts. You know, these are the guys that, you know, I could see Islander fans being in love with right it's like Crider too. He loves Cryder gone. But there's, he's not, he's not an easy guy to move, man. He's the third leading scorer in franchise history. He's tied for the most power play goals in franchise history. He's a legacy guy, you know, he's the longest tenured Ranger and what would.
Anthony Pusick
It do to the locker room him?
Rosenberg
Well, Anthony just can't help it. I love it but that he's your typical Ranger, but I'm just saying.
Anthony Pusick
But, but I'm just asking a question.
Rosenberg
I, I know, I, I, hey, when you're talking about changing a core, he is the core, right. And I think, and I don't know this for any fact, but I believe he should have been the captain, not truba. When they tr, when they traded McDonough, they were looking for a captain. I said that Chris Crider is the guy. Chris Kreider is the first guy that speaks. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He's Mr. Ranger now. For all I know, he was asked and turned it down. I don't know, but I thought if you had made him the captain, I think things would have changed here a little bit. I just get the sense that it just never, it never worked with Truba as the captain. I think Kreider should have been. But again, I don't have a kick coming if he turned it down. I don't know the answer to that. But I thought that he was a stand up enough guy, respected enough in that room to make it happen. And unfortunately now it just seems like kind of makes sense to move on. But please, Anthony, at least acknowledge he's a great, first of all, he's a great guy. And I know that's not supposed to matter, I know that's not supposed to matter, but it's, it's a tough thing to see leave the organization.
Anthony Pusick
Yes, I agree anyway, but it should not break the organization. That's all I'm saying.
Rosenberg
No, I, at some point should. Nobody should. When you haven't won. Nobody should. But I'm just saying at least acknowledge.
Anthony Pusick
I'll give you a good example.
Rosenberg
You know, they'll say, you know, don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.
Anthony Pusick
No, no, no, no, no. But I'm, but you know, if Barclay Goudreau could cause the uproar and he was a great guy too, and a great locker room guy, if he and Ryan Lindgren can cause the drama in the locker room, I'll give you A good example. Dan Girardi was at the game last night. You saw him there, right? Don't. Yes, he was there. And I thought to myself, wow, I remember the good days with Tanjirardi. What were the good days? A couple of Eastern Conference finals appearances in a Stanley Cup Final. No Cups. And I love Dan Girardi. He was a great Ranger. But every single person in my lifetime of the good Rangers teams are going to end up with no Cups.
Rosenberg
You don't. Jeez, I get that.
Don Hahn
What were the good times? Oh, all we did was go to two Final Fours in a Stanley Cup Final.
Anthony Pusick
And I'm very grateful for that.
Don Hahn
Serious.
Anthony Pusick
But what are we holding on to now?
Rosenberg
I don't want to put Anthony. I don't want to put words in Anthony's mouth, but you know what? You know what he's trying to avoid? What? What the Knicks and the Jet fans do. Where the glory days were, the almost days. Right. You don't want to have to. You look back fondly at the mid-90s where the Knicks almost won. You look back at the back to back championship games for the jets when they almost won.
Anthony Pusick
Alan, do you want to hold on to this? Islanders core? Brock Nelson got. You had a lot of good moments.
Don Hahn
No, no. But that's. That's the conversation we have. Brock Nelson, it's like, basically, you know, okay, what I was about to say is this is why the Giants should have traded Saquon Barkley, not let him walk.
Anthony Pusick
Yes.
Don Hahn
Because when you have players like this and they meant something to you, but you still have to get something for them so that the last thing, Last contribution they make is something positive. Hey, we remember he had a great career. We had to move on from him. But that draft pick, we got turned into this. Like, that's what you want, some type of a legacy left behind, a lineage that you can connect to. Not. He walked away and we got nothing for him. You could have held onto him too long because we were too emotional about the business aspect of it, where it's time to go.
Anthony Pusick
But you can appreciate these moments and then also say, I think it's time for a change. Yeah, I've been beating the drum of this Rangers core is not able to get it done since the last coach.
Rosenberg
If I'm. If I'm of the opinion, and I am, and I've told people in Pittsburgh this and I respect that, their opinions, but I got into arguments with people in Pittsburgh. I think the Penguins were nuts to hold on to Sidney Crosby. Makes no sense anymore. All right, you keep doubling down, and now you get worse and worse every year. You've got a major asset. You could trade the Colorado for a Don.
Don Hahn
You only trade you. You only trade him for a pick that could be. That could wind up in the top 10.
Rosenberg
But my, my, my point is.
Don Hahn
Or multiple first, but elite.
Rosenberg
But don't be like, you got to get a. No when, when you're falling apart as an organization, you do that. But what I'm saying is if I'm willing and listen, I'm not a Penguin fan, but I'm saying if I can have the opinion that Sidney Crosby could be traded, who's won three Stanley Cups, then there's no reason why guys who haven't won anything can't also be traded. You can't just hold. This is not. I can understand Anthony's frustration where it's like, oh, we just, we got to hold on to this core because they. Of what was accomplished the two third round visits two of the last three years. Or the fact with Kreider because you have an emotional attachment. I'm just saying acknowledge him as he walks out the door, but don't keep him because of some, you know, legacy. You got to get better as a franchise. This is what kills franchise.
Don Hahn
It's not enough holding on guys. You can't. You can't deal in emotion. I don't think Chris Drew, he is dealing in emotion. It's the right way to do it, and everybody else will get emotional and you have to block that stuff out because eventually if you do it right, you'll be proven correct and everybody will say you handled it the right way, but you stayed strong and you. Anthony's true.
Rosenberg
Let me ask you this, Anthony and Alan, because you're both in the know.
Anthony Pusick
I know nothing.
Rosenberg
If, if JD or Gordon had made those deals, do you think. Do you think the players would have reacted the way they did or did they react the way they did when Drury took over and go, all right, he's one of us. He's going to get it. He's a former player. You know, he. I play. You know, a lot of us played with him and against him. You know, he's going to have our back. And jury's all business. You're used to the GMs that you never played with or GMs that didn't play. Now, JD obviously played, but you know what I mean? You're like, hey, all right, they're businessmen. They're going to do what they do. I wonder if they felt like Chris is going to have our back. And maybe they were taken aback by the fact that he's all business, but he should be.
Anthony Pusick
But he did. Donnie did. They've had three coaches. They had Quinn, they had Gallant. Now they have Laviolette. They've had three opportunities with this core to do it, and they couldn't do it.
Rosenberg
I'm saying. Yeah, it's a great point, but Drury only has.
Don Hahn
Anthony's right. Anthony's right. He actually did. They almost for. They forced him to this. He kept giving them the benefit of the doubt. I like the core. It's got to be the coaching. Maybe we need a new voice. Maybe the core. We're too good. They're so close. It is that. And then you realize, you know what? All right, it's not the coach. Because we'd love you to let you know. It ain't the coach. Well, it's not the coach.
Rosenberg
Well, I. I honestly think, listen, Quinn was gone because Quinn was about the rebuild and. And jury wanted to bring in his own guy. I think he admitted, at least at the time, that Gallant was the wrong guy. And he brought in Peter because like, all right, he's a guy who's won a cup. He's. He's been to the Stanley cup finals with three different teams. Three to bring him in. And you got. I gave him a three year contract. Not five, not four, three. Because this is how long I think the window is. And in the middle of that contract contract, you completely fall apart. And he shifted gears. He did the right thing. I think he. I don't think he overdid it, Anthony. I think he. All right, here. All right, boys, here's your shot. All right, I'll let Gant go. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. But now when I bring in Peter, you better show results. And they did last year, but not so far this year. I think he gave them a fair amount of rope. I don't think he gave them too much rope. I think he gave him a fair amount of rope. They may not think so, I think, but I think they did.

Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. Don, did you hear this? This little story that Matt Rempe told after the game last night about his encounter with Tom Wilson? This is great. It is. So I, I Remy Remy put a hit on Ovechkin, a pretty strong one, and Wilson went over to him because that's what he does. And he kind of had it. And he says, and, and the way Repeat tells it, he said, don't hit ov. Don't do that to ovi. And Reppy said, I told him I'll hit anyone I want. I like that.
Rosenberg
You gotta love that. And you and listen, I know Ranger fans have no love for Tom Wilson, but you believe me, you take a second and I still believe.
Don Hahn
Absolutely.
Rosenberg
Even though they won anyway. That was a huge mistake. He wasn't on Team Canada in the Four Nations. And you wonder how that fight when they played each other earlier in the Four nations would have gone down if it was Tom Wilson on the ice instead of Braden Hagel. Brandon Hagel. Not saying. They're not saying that. They wouldn't have fought him anyway. But I just wonder how it turned out. Fine for Canada, but it might have hit differently. I don't know.
Don Hahn
I like that. I like that. Ryan and Rockville center what's up, Ryan?
Ryan
How you doing, guys? I just wanted to ask. Ask what? For the Islands to move on from this. We, we know it's coming, right? We know this is probably going to be a couple rough years after this and they have to unload a franchise beloved player. But what is fair market value for a guy like Brock Nelson? If you were to go to Colorado or, or even over to Jersey or something like that, they have, they have to cash in on this because they're. What Lou has done. I know he was trying, or who was done with, with, with these draft picks is. We have nothing. We have, we have nothing. We have Cole Eiserman that hopefully will come become a star for us. He seems like a one way type player. What is fair market value for a guy like Rock Nelson?
Don Hahn
What do you think, Don? Like, what is we talking? You know, can you get. What do you get? A third? What are you getting?
Rosenberg
Yeah, probably maybe a second or a third. He is a rental, right?
Don Hahn
So, yeah, he's a rental, but boy, he can, he can. If you're a good playoff team.
Rosenberg
You know who I think he's not just a rental. I think he should. I think Toronto would love to have him. They can use, I think they can use him.
Don Hahn
How many scores do you need?
Rosenberg
But I, but you know what, I just think that it's, it's a position. He's a center, left handed. He's big, he could be physical. He doesn't have to score on that.
Don Hahn
Great shot, but he's got, he's got a great shot. That's what he does. He's great shooter.
Rosenberg
Yeah, but I just. They could be a nice little add to their power play, little depth center, which you need when you, when you face off. Palmeri, you know, he's got experience. He's playing this down like a final, right? I mean, yeah, but I don't. You're not getting a first. I mean, you just get, you're probably going to get a third round pick. It's not going to be that big of a deal. And that's why you got to ask yourself. We just, it's, it's ironic, right? We're having this conversation and what was in the commercial break, you know, buy tickets to UBS to see the Islanders, like, so you have to ask yourself for Lou. Okay, all right, I'm going to get a third round pick and that's nice and I need to rebuild, but you know, I'm also trying to sell tickets. My team's still alive in the playoffs, like, is it worth it at the end of the day for a third or fourth round pick to completely make the rest of your regular season meaningless. Palmieri, I, you do it right, Paul Mary, listen, he's a, he's a devil to most people's eyes anyway.
Don Hahn
That's what the Giants did by not trading Seiko. They were so worried about eggs over their heads to finish the season. Who cares? Get what you can so you can build forward. This era is over.
Rosenberg
Okay. And he is 33, so you're probably likely not bringing him back. But I'm just saying, I, I, I'm thinking like Malkin and Ledecky and I'm saying, oh boy, I get a third round pick which may or may not be a big deal to my organization. But losing, losing Brock Nelson and what the fans are going to feel and now playing, you know, 10 or 12 home games the rest of the season in front of nobody because everybody's going to say we're done. I don't know. I do it because I think you can't worry about it, but because you got to do what's best for your organization. But it's something, I'm sure it's going to creep into ownership's mind.
Don Hahn
Like this is, well, no, no, this is the part that you hate the most because this is the dismantle. And moving on from pieces is the hardest part. See, the easy thing is to hang on and hope it works out and hang on and hope catch. Like maybe we could do this. But the reality is with some players that you do have some value, you've got to just start collecting it. And you know, the worst part is coming up next, which is you're going to lose, you're not going to be good enough. Like, I know this sounds crazy. Don't like Barzell, somebody that this summer you got to think, you got to wonder, you got to say like, is this a guy that is somebody you build around to try to build a winner? Is he a, is he a force multiplier or is he just a supremely talented skilled player who'd probably be better off somewhere else where there's already established high level players there that he adds to that team rather than he's the team.
Peter
Right.
Rosenberg
He's a great offensive player. Player on a team that didn't have a lot of offense.
Don Hahn
Yeah, but is that like who you.
Rosenberg
Want to have be your best offensive player? Horvat. The same thing. And then you gave Horvat the big contract because you made the trade for him. But are these franchise build around guys.
Don Hahn
Top line that they were supposed to be like you were trying to find somebody, anybody that can connect with a guy like him. It's the hardest thing to do. And so look, I, I tomorrow is going to be a very interesting day for the Islanders. The Rangers have done a lot of moves already. Curious to see what the Devils do. The trade deadline is tomorrow right before the show begins. So that, that whole thing will be very interesting. But with, with about 30 seconds left here, Don, let's just Knicks, Lakers tonight it's the first of a double of a back to back which is very difficult. Lakers, then Clippers tomorrow night. This is a nationally televised game. The Knicks are not good on national TV. They're also not good against teams over.500. What do you need to see tonight? Because I think I need to see a close game, a battle. I need to see the Knicks show some grit.
Rosenberg
Yes, it all depends on how it looks. I can, I can stand a loss. But you need to be competitive. You get blown out again, that would be very disconcerting.
Don Hahn
Yeah. And again, the way Luke and LeBron have been playing, man, it has been a show that'll be on TNT TV. We'll have the coverage here on 880 following Ty Butler, who's up next? Don, see you tomorrow.
Rosenberg
You got it, buddy.
