Peter Rosenberg
Well, when, when, when you're lost in life, this is, this is when you most need your friends. And you know what, as we bring in Alan Hahn, who's supposed to be on his day off, but apparently this is the biggest sports season in ages. You know, we had some conversations in recent times about my level of Celtics fanship. It takes a moment like this for me to remember how much I love this team, Alan, because I am nauseous. I am sick to my stomach. I do not understand. People are rejoicing in Philadelphia and crying in Boston as the Celtics send Jalen Brown to Philadelphia for Paul George, who, by the way, if you're wondering, has a $54 million player option next year. This is not a one year. It's Paul George, two first round picks and two second round picks. Alan, how floored are you? And can you make sense of this, please?
Alan Hahn
The only way. Hi, guys, by the way.
Commercial Announcer 2
Hi.
Commercial Announcer
Hello.
Alan Hahn
Only way I should make sense of this is that someone has abducted Brad Stevens, Right. And they're running the show right now in Boston. Because there's a couple of reasons why this doesn't make sense. Number one, Jalen Brown was supposed to bring you Giannis. Like, that's what he was supposed to bring you a piece that was gonna like, that's a seven years in a row top three in the MVP voting. Like, that's what you're supposed to get out of this. Paul George is, is just like. He's kind of like running on fumes. We saw him in the series with the Knicks. By the fourth quarter, he had nothing left. Right? Like, this is not who. You're not bringing a player. It's making you better. And then on top of it, you're sending a guy that you know is going to be V for Vendetta every time he sees you. You're sending him not only in keeping him in the East, a team that is a rival of yours that you have to see four times a year. Like, none of this makes sense. I hope it makes financial sense for Boston, but I really can't explain it at all. Well, the only round picks.
Michael Kay
Yeah, I reached out to Gunling just to get the sixer side of things. Like, does this make any sense? He goes, no idea. None. Stunned. I don't think I fully understood just how desperate Boston was to trade him. I need someone to explain it to me. What does Boston know that no one else knows? And that's a great point at the end of that text. Like, what ticking time bomb? Is there something that's gonna come out that make him. You know? But otherwise, what we did was, all right, Kawhi's gone, Ja's gone, Giannis is gone. KD doesn't make sense. Harden doesn't make sense. Is there somebody out there they're making room for? Is there another move that will make this make sense? But I can't imagine there's anybody out there that would make it make sense.
Alan Hahn
No, No. I don't know of somebody out there that would make sense on that team, the way they play. And so I need it to be explained. It does feel like we got to move on from this guy. And whatever it takes, it just. That's what it feels like now. We just need to move on from this guy. And that's the part that I think is the biggest concern is what. And that's why I love Gunling is such a fan. It's like, what do they know about Jaylen Brown that we're going to find out and regret?
Michael Kay
Right.
Alan Hahn
That's what a fan usually.
Peter Rosenberg
Alan, I just. Earlier in the show, earlier in the show today, I waxed poetic about Brad Stevens in talking about the Mitchell Robinson of it all and saying, hey, you know, this isn't a move that gets me, like, super excited the second I hear it as a Celtics fan, but in knowing what Brad Stevens is like, this is a move that. Actually, Alan, this is the crazy part. It made me think, oh, they're keeping the core together because they obviously think they're close because Mitch Robinson is not the kind of player who makes you a contender. He's the kind of player who takes a contender over the top. So I am completely lost now on how you make the move for Mitch Robinson, which you think is this little final kind of tweak, but now you blow the whole thing up by sending off Brown.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. Mitchell is like a Time Lord 2.0 for them, isn't he? Like, he's what Robert Williams III was for them when they were A championship caliber team. That effort, energy, rebounding, shot blocking center that you played with, you know, with Al Horford, who would come in and be more the stretch five guy, like it's a really compelling fit. If you had kept everybody else together. That's what it looked like. It looked like, oh yeah, that's the championship team that they had and that's what Mitchell Robinson's going to do. And then you do this and now it's a gaping hole at shooting guard. Gaping hole now, now if they don't,
Peter Rosenberg
if we don't find out, if we don't find out that there's some other shoe that's going to drop. Where would this rank to you in all time shocking moves? I don't just mean because of the magnitude of the move, but in terms of an overall seemingly terrible move from a guy with such a pristine reputation like B.R.
Commercial Announcer 2
stevens.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, that's where you get me. I mean nothing's ever going to top Luka Dontis for Anthony Davis, right? Like that's always going to be number one all time.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay, good.
Alan Hahn
You know, head scratching, right. Like that's never.
Peter Rosenberg
Although I, I don't know man, I, I might push, I might even push back. But can I even push back though? I mean, I, I, I, I guess I would offer though AD at that point still offered much more than Paul George currently does. I just think Paul George is finished.
Alan Hahn
It's weird. Are you putting Jason Tatum now? Where, where is Jason Tatum supposed to play? Like, is that, is that your, like is that your, those your wings? Like is I, I, again there's, it's mind boggling. It's gotta, it can't be financial like it's not a salary dump or are they looking at it as, you know, in two years we're out of this versus Brown, we'd have to extend. They don't, they didn't want to be in the Jalen Brown business any anymore, period.
Peter Rosenberg
I guess not.
Alan Hahn
No one else in the league was willing to offer something better. No one in the league wanted to off. No one in the league saw that he's on the market and I'm going to make a move for. Remember Milwaukee chose the Heat deal because they thought that Brown would come to Milwaukee and not want to sign an extension and they were going to have to deal with moving on from another star player right away. So there's no other team in the league that was willing to make a move because of that reason and that's why Philly was able to win this thing. It's it's incredible. The east is the east is going crazy, boys. It's going crazy. Giannis in Miami, Kauai's Toronto, Jalen Brown's now in Philly.

If you really believe in Cleveland before the end of the day, we were
Michael Kay
talking about it earlier in the show, Alan, about why would the reports be that they would have gotten boat raced by the Knicks. And if they truly believe that, I guess they figure we might as well just blow it up.
Alan Hahn
That's crazy.
Michael Kay
Let me.
Alan Hahn
Wendy had said that a couple of times, right?
Michael Kay
He said that a couple times.
Alan Hahn
Wendy had said a couple of times that he had heard that Boston, you know, felt like even if they got past Philly, they just did not think they were good enough to beat the Knicks in a playoff series. And so now that the Knicks won a championship, they're just kind of saying we're, we're not good enough to beat them anymore and we've got to rethink everything. But that's a massive rethink. Dumping your, your 1B. You're arguably they're both one. You could, you could make the argument either way. Which one, which ones you. Who was your better player? Jaylen Brown or Jason Tatum? Everybody told me it's Tatum. I don't know. I saw Jay.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, I think it's close. I always thought it was close.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, I think it's close too. So you moved on from your, one of your best players and your return was pennies.
Michael Kay
Well, think about it now. Think about now, the east, right? Forget Boston. You didn't have to play Boston to get to the finals and to win the championship, but you did have to play Philadelphia, who just got a lot better over the last hour. And you did have to play Cleveland, who might have LeBron James next year, right? So. So at least the teams that you played made moves to get better. Not saying that they still are going to beat the Knicks, but they got better. But the team you didn't have to play, the team that fell apart against Philadelphia in the second half of that series, looked like they just tapped out.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, my choice. By the way, are you watching Detroit, fellas?
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Michael Kay
What happens?
Alan Hahn
Gone. Well, Tobias Harris is gone. Okay. Isaiah Stewart is gone and Jalen Duran can't get. They can't agree to a contract. So the, the big bad Detroit Pistons 60 win team. That was that team that the Knicks were. Everybody thought, you know, I mean, they got smoked by them. They might be a different team next year.
Michael Kay
Why weren't they on in on Mitch?
Alan Hahn
I. I don't know. Yeah, I don't, I don't know. I really didn't know that Boston was going to be in on, on Robinson. I thought for sure that he was going to be headed to. It's headed out west and I thought the Lakers would try to get in on that. So that. That's. It's two moves by Boston today that really caught me by surprise.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, dude. And listen, it goes one of two ways now. Either. Either something else happens and we go, oh my God, Brad Stevens is the greatest. Or it doesn't happen and we go, oh my God, Brad Stevens fell off a cliff. It only goes one of two ways. There's no other way around this.
Michael Kay
There's some. There's got to be something else.
Alan Hahn
Or he's been abducted.
Peter Rosenberg
Or he's been. I like the alien abduction.
Michael Kay
That would make a lot of sense. It's never happened. I'm really looking forward to maybe talking about that tomorrow. Listen, Alan, rest up because we got a big day tomorrow to beach bash. Doors open at noon. It's gonna be phenomenal. So enjoy the rest of your day off and I will see you at Bar A tomorrow.

But I might jump in there. Peter or you. You'll be angry. You could treat.
Peter Rosenberg
By the way, I decided I enjoy it. I'll block some goals now.
Michael Kay
If you are going to kick past whoever it is in goal tomorrow, shoes are required. Alright. So if you got your sandals, you're not doing it. We're not paying for broken toes. Plus music from Surfing for Daisy who will be playing an hour before and after the shows. And I'll be doing my song. A lot of people had some fun thinking of songs I might be doing tomorrow. But they got them all wrong. There was some.
Peter Rosenberg
Everyone got it wrong.
Michael Kay
Everybody got it wrong. I want Charlene, you know, now I think it's. I think it's a contender. I've been known to do a couple of songs. I could try to do that one. I know it. And now I look at it completely different because of Peter. It's all brought to you by Spiked a Boost Mobile, Miller Lite Fanatics Fest and NYC and the New Jersey Lottery Fanatics Fest. Nyc. Not the exact city of New York. You must be at least 21 years of age to enter.
Peter Rosenberg
Do you think that this sums up the situation? Well, my. My cousins from Boston are named Ben and Jeremy. Okay.
Michael Kay
Ben and Jeremy.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes. Not Ben and Jerry.
Michael Kay
That's too close to Ben and Jerry. They should have rethought that.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, there's a third child, Annie, so that doesn't really fit. It's not like just them, you know what I mean? But actually I wonder, was the ice cream big when they were born? How long has the ice cream been big for?
Michael Kay
Well, I remember it like in the
Peter Rosenberg
early late 80s, early 90s.
Michael Kay
No, I would say going back, I'll look it up, but I wouldn't be surprised. Mid 80s.
Charles Barkley
Yeah.
Commercial Announcer 3
I got the answer for you was May 5th, 1978.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, wow.
Commercial Announcer 5
Wow.
Michael Kay
So yeah, it was around, but obviously
Peter Rosenberg
not as iconic probably. I feel like you got more iconic in the 90s.
Michael Kay
I would think in 78 it was probably just a local Vermont creamery.
Commercial Announcer 3
It gained national attention 81 after being featured on Time magazine declared it the best ice cream in America.
Commercial Announcer
Wow.
Peter Rosenberg
But I. I still think it's probably later when it became like literally it's you Know, it's. It's up there with like, briars. You know what I mean? I am, probably. But anyways, we're getting off the beaten path here.
Commercial Announcer 2
Way off.
Peter Rosenberg
However, my. My cousin Ben, his. His little boy Oliver, actually, remember, Oliver was featured on our show years ago.
Michael Kay
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Because I showed him. I showed video when he was like 5 years old of how incredible he was driving a golf ball.
Michael Kay
I don't remember that.
Peter Rosenberg
Remember that? You remember we put the video up against someone else. Like, I don't remember who he put him up against, but he was better at hitting a golf ball than someone at like 5 years old. Anyways, he's very into sports. Oliver, he's like nine now or whatever. And Oliver just asked my cousin, who is Paul George, which I think sort of sums it up. This is a kid, Don. This is a little kid who is so into sports that my cousin took him to the World cup in Boston last week from D.C. they went up to Boston for the World cup. So they could see that's how. That's how into sports they are. And he said, who is Paul George? That's where we're at, folks. That's where we're at. And I'm. And I'm disgusted that I haven't felt this much about the Celtics. Isn't that. Is there something wrong with me? I'm a negative person. I'm feeling more right now in this moment than I felt for them in years. And it's anger and it's disgust.
Michael Kay
Well, in case you missed it, Jalen Brown dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George, a first and a second round pick. And if you're wondering, well done. There's got to be more going back to Boston. Well, that's all we got. Now, is there another deal on the horizon that's going to make this all make sense? It doesn't feel like it because usually they announce these three team deals right away, and we can't think of a player that is available that would make this make sense again. If Giannis was still out there, I'd say, okay, get ready for Milwaukee to be included in the Nissan. Giannis, but he's already in Miami. Ja is gone. Kawhi is gone. None of this makes any sense at all. And I just wonder, Peter, from a personal standpoint, since it's like the first time you felt anything for them and it's disdain.
Peter Rosenberg
Am I out?
Michael Kay
Are you out? You just part of an amazing Knicks run.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it's not how it works. You know that it's real quick, some more details.
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
If you're wondering, it may get worse.
Alan Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
It depends how you look at it. 2028, first round pick that could convert from a first to a swap that is more favorable to Boston.
Commercial Announcer 3
Okay.
Alan Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
2031, unprotected first. 2028, second round pick, most favorable with the Warriors OKC in Milwaukee. And a 2030 second round pick, most favorable. So those two, let's just be honest, they're nothing.
Alan Hahn
They're.
Peter Rosenberg
They're just things you put in. They're not real things.
Michael Kay
Words to make, to fill out the story.
Peter Rosenberg
Their words. The trade is essentially Jalen Brown for Paul George. And it. You know, Adan, I really think we can argue tomorrow about this. I think it's worse than Don Chichen AD I do. Because I guess what.
Michael Kay
Listen, I know it certainly is.
Commercial Announcer
I think.
Peter Rosenberg
I think Allen was off AD at the moment of the trade. Obviously he was injured again afterwards. But like, I believe that there's more AD could do for a team at this stage, by far, than Paul George. And Doncic is not that much better than Jalen Brown. I know he's a sexier player and he scores more, but do you know how good Jalen Brown is on both sides of the ball? He is a prime time player on both sides of the ball. I think this is worse. This is like Don. It's insane. It's absolutely insane.
Michael Kay
I completely agree. Let's close it out. We got, you know, Daniel, New York, hang in. Ty Butler's coming up at 7:00'.
Commercial Announcer 2
Clock.
Michael Kay
I want to give you more time than just the 45, 40 seconds that we have left in the show. So I apologize. Hang in there, Daniel. Ty Butler is going to be coming up next. You know, he's going to break this down into a fine powder as well. Because even if you're not a Sixer fan or a Celtic fan, if you're a Knick fan, it just shifts power, right? Like now, Philadelphia is a lot stronger. You know, Boston might tap out, but Philadelphia is better now. But again, we'll talk a lot about this tomorrow. We've got the Beach Bash. Get there at noon. Hydrate yourself. It's going to be really hot. Water is going to be available there. Peter, I will see you tomorrow.
Peter Rosenberg
See you tomorrow, buddy.
Michael Kay
I'm looking forward to it. See you tomorrow at the Beach Bash. Ty Butler's next. Don Han and Rosenberg, ESPN New York.

Episode: Hour 4: Jaylen Brown Traded
Date: July 1, 2026
Hosts: Alan Hahn, Peter Rosenberg, Michael Kay
This episode dives into the shocking NBA trade sending Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George, along with two first- and two second-round picks. The hosts grapple with the rationale (or lack thereof) behind the move, its potential implications for the Celtics, 76ers, and the broader NBA landscape, and the emotional roller coaster felt by fans and analysts alike.
Peter Rosenberg highlights the contradiction of adding Mitch Robinson “as a final tweak” and then trading Brown, which “blows the whole thing up.”
Alan Hahn:
Speculation and jokes about Brad Stevens being “abducted” and disbelief at the deal.
Rosenberg’s anecdote about his cousin’s son not knowing who Paul George is, humorously underscoring the lopsidedness of the swap:
This was a passionate, bewildered, and often humorous deep-dive into one of the most baffling NBA trades in recent memory, capturing the rollercoaster of emotions and speculation from New York’s top sports voices.
