Peter Rosenberg
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers, well.
Don Hahn
We ask you to line them up. 1-800-919-3776. Take you up until 7 o' clock. At that time, Pat O' Keefe is going to take over Knicks Pacers game one of the Eastern Conference Finals. How you feeling, everybody? Let's get back into it with Raul in the Bronx. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Raul?
Caller
What's going on, Don? You know, I'm good, I'm good. I'm just feeling optimistic, you know, it's been a long time coming. I've been the Knicks time my whole life. Grew up in Washington Heights. For the Knicks, it was dark days, but it feels good to experience this.
Don Hahn
Why not? Are you nervous? You excited?
Caller
Yeah, I'm a little nervous just because, you know, it's uncharted water for us. I've never been here. I'm only 32 years old and it's my first time. But I think that how game one goes is like how the series would go. So I'm not, I'm not scared. I'm just more, more nervous, like. But it's a good nervous, to be honest.
Don Hahn
Ma, listen, there's there, I think there's a difference between being nervous and anxious. Why wouldn't you be? Anx, you're 33 years old. You've never seen your team this far, this deep into the playoffs. And I kind of agree with that sentiment, Peter. I think game one is always the tone setter. The Pacers have not faced any adversity. So if the Knicks were able to win game one, the Pacers literally will be down in a series for the first time. So that can kind of change things where if the Pacers win. All right, not that big of a deal. The Knicks have been able to win on the road in this postseason, but it just fuels the Pacers right there. They're 8 and 2 in the postseason, go to 9 and 2, win on the road, grab home court advantage. I think tonight's not that, not the end all, be all, but I think it is a tone setter. I think he said it right.
Peter Rosenberg
That is exactly the verbiage. I just said that to someone earlier, tone setter. I do not think they need it. I think this is a series where they could easily lose tonight, win Friday, go win in Indiana. It's not a be all, end all, but with the momentum they have, you want to win. Here's the main thing I want to see from them. Besides a win, of course. What I would like to see from this team is coming out of the game and playing at the very least even basketball. And that was just something down that throughout the Celtics series until the end when they finally finished them off, just felt like every first quarter they're down 17 to 5 and you're like, well, what's going on here? This is at the very least an even matchup. They should be able to get out to a good start and not always be playing from behind, which though they do it very well, is not what you want to be playing with fire.
Don Hahn
And I don't think you can expect to just do that all the time. It's kind of the way the game is built. Even the way the Thunder won in impressive fashion last night. They trailed in the first half. I don't think you get that caught up. But again, the whole fallen behind 16, 18, 20 point, it's no way to live. The way they won the Celtics series, Peter, is not the way you normally win series. You want to find a little bit more consistency. People that believe the Knicks can win this series believe that they found it at the end of that Celtic series and now it'll run into this Pacer series. Or is it just going to be. That's how they are. They're kind of inconsistent. They'll put up stinkers and followed up with a great game. Not be able to take the. The prosperity and give it back. I think you're living dangerously.
Peter Rosenberg
It's just not what you. What you want to do. Can I tell you what I'm personally very excited about, Don?
Don Hahn
What's that?
Peter Rosenberg
I'm personally excited to get to root for the team.
Don Hahn
Yeah, how about that?
Peter Rosenberg
Like now that the Celtics series is over, I don't have to hang on to sort of. I don't know, It's. This is very. I got to tell you guys, I'm not even kidding. It's a little More personal and complicated than I can even get into. Because. Can I just tell you the truth, Don? The truth is I want to just probably be a Knicks fan. My wife is a Knicks fan. This is where I live. When you're around it in this world, like I said, the football thing isn't an option. It's not an option. I'm commanders for life. I'll never have. I can't imagine a situation that maybe in another world, Don. Let's say we have the Giants on our air or we had a weekly with their quarterback and I really liked them. Maybe I'd be like, I have a slight fondness. I don't hate the team, but I can't imagine a world in which I'd ever root for a football team here. Besides, if the jets made the super bowl, of course, and it's not against the Commanders, sure, I'd be go jets, no problem. But I don't really have a lot of up for grabs in my sports world, and I've really found it hard and you've pointed this out to, like, hold on to love for this team from my childhood that wasn't from my hometown. So, like, I feel a real guilt. I can't just abandon a team I've rooted for and I have a fondness for my whole life. But I was. I'm more excited about this than any, Don. If the Celtics have been playing right now, me rooting for them alone while my wife doesn't even watch for a city that I don't represent. And frankly, the Celtics fans annoy me. I'm rooting for Dave Portnoy. Like, no, I don't want to do that. Oh, shut up, Anthony.
Don Hahn
Well, that's the thing you got to get over, all right? When it comes to all the other sports, you're a fraud. Let's be honest. The only thing you committed to were the Washington football team. Commanders Redskins. That's the team that you fell in love with. That's your hometown team.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Don Hahn
You were kind of up for grabs on the other three sports. Nothing really seemed to click.
Peter Rosenberg
Even college. Even college. Until I chose Maryland.
Don Hahn
Right. But, you know, because look at the teams you root for. Both of them, not from Washington. Both of them great franchises. You hopped on the Penguins bandwagon. They're winning cups with Mario Lemieux. You hop on the Celtic bandwagon. You got Larry Bird. They're winning championships. So you were kind of up for grabs then. And then you kind of stuck with it because the team's been good. And then hey, this is what I've committed to. So you've been up for grabs on these other sports besides football. So just continue to be up for grabs. You're up for grabs again. You live in New York. You married a Knick fan. Your daughter's probably gonna grow up being a Knick fan. Just be a Nick fan.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, look at the post I just put up of her right now on Rosenberg radio. It's a tremendous.
Don Hahn
The only thing you're afraid of is, well, people are gonna think I'm a fraud if I become a Nick fan. They think you're a fraud anyway, but get over it. Just enjoy yourself. That's what it is. You're a Knick fan. You're gonna jump on the bandwagon. And you know what? Next year, the Celtics are great again and the Knicks stink. Then you'll be a Celtic fan. Nobody's holding you any kind of standard in basketball, hockey or baseball. Football. You're the only one that you're committed non fraud. So just own the fraud. Doesn't make you a bad guy. I've said that some of my best friends are frauds. Don't be afraid of it, man.
Peter Rosenberg
By the way, it's such a great. Isn't it a great take by Don. Well, what's the point? What am I fighting for?
Don Hahn
No, I don't know what you're. You're fighting for not being a fraud.
Peter Rosenberg

I appreciate it.
Peter Rosenberg
And by the way, it's like deep. Like I really was sitting there watching these games and with the exception of when Tatum got hurt, where I sincerely felt like, damn it, besides that, I was kind of like, ah, Celtics won last year. I want to see the Knicks win. That's. That's fraudulent.
Don Hahn
Right?
Peter Rosenberg
That's fraudulent.
Don Hahn
But you know, you're following the money and you're kind of rooting for you. Hey, you're. The Knicks are on your radio station. It's good for your career. It's good for our show that the.
Peter Rosenberg
Knicks are good and you relate to that part.
Don Hahn
I relate to that.
Peter Rosenberg
You fully abandoned, gave up fanship. You became a grown up.
Don Hahn
I'm working with the team, sure, but you're kind of working with the team of Jason. I mean, you benefit from this run.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm absolutely working with the team of Jake.
Don Hahn
So we're all kind of rooting.
Peter Rosenberg
But I mean I'm, I'm very excited. I mean, frankly, this will probably be the most I've ever been in now. I mean, I'll be honest in terms of my fraudulence again. Up for grabs. Mets 20, 15 and 16. I was, I was pretty excited about the Mets, but this is. Basketball is different. I love basketball considerably more than baseball.
Don Hahn
Yeah. So.
Peter Rosenberg
And respectfully, that Mets team was pretty likable. This, this Knicks team's very likable.
Don Hahn
And you hang on to the non fraudulence in football and you've Been very consistent with that.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you.
Don Hahn
Let's go to JT on Long Island. You're on espn. New York.
Caller
Hey, can you hear me?
Don Hahn
Of course.
Caller
So apologies. But, Peter, first of all, you'd be bad guy, man, if you. If you. If you just defraud yourself like that. I know, I know. That's like, kind of like the role you're going. But that's besides the point. Go, Nicks. Get some revenge tonight. First of all. And, Peter, I got to push back on you with the. The Knicks Celtics rivalry. I wish Colin was here a little bit because I'd like to hear his perspective on this. But there's. There's definitely juice there between the Knicks and the Celtics. When you think about it, just how much juice there is with. With different rivalries. You know, maybe not like, from a competitive standpoint, if that's the kind of con you're having, but, like, you think about. You think about in division, like, I know the markets there, too. And there's kind of that competition just in general between those two cities. It's like the closest city to us. Like, you think Philly, too. And all the rivalries that New York has with Philly just based on, like, you know, Don, you know, like Rangers, and it's like Broad street versus, like, Broadway with the.
Don Hahn
You're talking about. JT is geography. New York, Philadelphia, New York, Boston. But really, it's been a long time. This is the first time in a while that the Knicks and Celtics have both been good at the same time. Yeah. You want to go back to the Bill Russell days. You want to go back to Clyde and all that. Yeah. But it's been a long time since that's been heated. And you talk about New York and Philadelphia. Yeah. Mets, Phillies, because they just played in the playoffs last year. Well, what's. Rangers, Flyers at this point. It's been a while since they've met. It's been like a decade. The last time they met in the postseason. Flyers. Been bad for a while. Knick Sixers kind of became a thing last year, Peter. With the embiid stuff, but there really isn't much of a recent history between those two teams. Geography. Yeah. New York's always going to hate Philly. New York's always going to hate Boston.
Peter Rosenberg
But that's the point. And that's how Allen felt, too. There's a regional thing, but there's no.
Don Hahn
Regional thing between Knicks Pacers. Has nothing to do with New York and Indiana.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it's legit basketball.
Don Hahn
Yeah, it's legit basketball.
Peter Rosenberg
That's what makes that so appealing. The Celtics thing, yes. They had a real history for the old school fans. If you're young, it's just regional. Sorry. Yeah, there was some regular season stuff over the last couple years. Remember the Knicks had the Celtics number in the regular season. Blah blah, blah, blah blah. They love Boo and Tatum. Okay. But it's not really anything. Not like this.
Don Hahn
No, this is definitely something special and it's, it's going to grow within the next couple of weeks of what I think is going to be pretty long.
Peter Rosenberg
And remember what I said yesterday on first take, the ability for Tyrese Halliburton to play a real role in this rivalry because of how heelish he knows how to play. He's a great player and he likes playing the heel. It could get. I hope there don, don't you hope there's spice? I hope there's spice.
Don Hahn
I want to see spice. I think there will be. I think there'll be a lot of spice in the series and begins tonight right after us. This episode is brought to you by State Farm. Knowing you could be saving money for the things you really want is a great feeling.

That is the definition of what New York sounds like right there. By the way. It's havoc from Mobb Deep's birthday today. And this song. I made a joke. I made a joke. And of course it's Biggie's birthday as well. I made a joke on first take yesterday. I keep the song up for one more second. Jacob. I said New York is in such a frenzy right now that I called the bank and this was the hold music. No, I was lying.
Don Hahn
Oh. But it was believable.
Peter Rosenberg
It sounded believable at the time though. Now how do you feel about this, Jacob, when I was trying to prove the New York moments. Did you watch the clip I posted?
Don Hahn
Oh, yeah. With the Martinelli's and the wash chips.
Peter Rosenberg
So I was thinking about bringing a chopped cheese up there. And then I wanted to bring a quarter water. But down by South Street Seaport, you can't find a quarter water. Yeah, you can't find them in my neighborhood on the Upper west side. Yeah, I don't know if they sell it in my neighborhood either. Yeah, like I don't know where you'd find a quarter water these days. And Don, you're from Jersey, you're not from New York. I obviously know about this from New Yorkers. Quarter water isn't actually water. It's the little plastic juices that had the tin foil film on the top.
Don Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
And it just. And it just colored. It's basically water with some, a little bit of sugar and food culture.
Don Hahn
Thinking about like grade school.
Peter Rosenberg
Exactly.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
So those were famous, you know, famous bodega drinks. So I wanted to bring a quarter water and a wise potato chips, if not a chopped cheese to show the New York vibe for a bit on first take. Something to do. I went down to the place at South Street Seaport. All I could get was. The closest I could get was the wise chips and the Martinelli's apple juice. Now let me ask you, Jacob, how do you feel about Martinelli's as a classic bodega choice? They didn't have Arizona either. I'm going to say that.
Don Hahn
Well, Martinelli's is a classic also.
Peter Rosenberg
The best apple juice. It is the best. You know, the Martinelli's right now, granted, it's more expensive, obviously, than a quarter water or an Arizona. It's like gourmet bodega food. But I thought it still proved the point. And the wise chips, by the way, if anyone's wondering if you haven't bought them in a long time, the wise chips have gone from 25 cents a bag. My wife was alarmed. 50 cents a bag. Now for a wise chip, I got the honey barbecue. Anyway, I threw that up on my Instagram as well. I was just trying to come up with something different, something fun to do to set the tone of what this New York energy is like. If you're late to the show, you're probably not listening because, let's be honest, you turned on 880 and a Mets game was on you. But why in God's name would I want to listen to this today? More on 1015, the ESPN New York app, if you are late. Earlier we had Ben Stiller, we had Jadakiss, or as Don, of course, knows.
Don Hahn
Him, we're getting a lot of callers that are very confident. Ben Judicus was on. He's a little nervous.
Peter Rosenberg
Jadakiss, Jadakiss. I would be judicious.
Don Hahn
I'm judicious. Embarrassing, but probably worth it.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, what do you. Probably absolutely worth it. So go check out the podcast if you want to hear. Judicus and of course, Ben Stiller talking about the next, by the way. Both very knowledgeable fans.
Don Hahn
No, big time.
Peter Rosenberg
Like there was neither one of those guys. Gives you simpleton answers.
Don Hahn
Good on the Pacers and everything about them. No, he's. He's definitely. These are real educated fans, for sure. Dave, way out in Switzerland. You're on ESPN New York. What are you doing out there?
Caller
What's going on, fellas? I'm in Switzerland, out here in Lucerne, actually, on work, but I just wanted to say, Go, New York. Go, New York.
Peter Rosenberg
Go.
Caller
Peter, you look great on freaking ESPN yesterday.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks, buddy.
Caller
Keep rocking the suit, you know. That's it, man.
Don Hahn
All right.
Peter Rosenberg
That's it. You gotta take game one.
Don Hahn
All right. I think tonight's gonna be very, very important. Can they recover? Sure. But I just, I have a feeling, Peter, this is one one going back to Indy, so it probably doesn't matter.
Peter Rosenberg
I've had that feeling, too now. I'll tell you what, though, Don. If they look dominant, will you start to think, like, if they win, not only win 2 0, but like, they really cruise in both games. You're, wow, there's a matchup problem here for Indiana. This team. Because there is a Chance. Remember, we did not see them healthy last year in the playoffs. This year, this team, this version of the Knicks, did quite well. 2 and 1 and dominated them in the games they won. Towns was fantastic. If they were to dominate them over the next couple of games, would you start to think like, we're going to the finals here?
Don Hahn
Yeah, I think if they win these two games, you say in convincing fashion, it's hard not to think that for sure, especially the way the Pacers are playing. If you're able to take care of business like that, that'd be pretty incredible. Richard, in Manhattan, you're on ESPN New York Hour. Richard.
Caller
Fellas, Sunday the Pacers play the Knicks, Game three. Now, Indiana is a state that's crazed about basketball, but you know what's going on Sunday. And Indianapolis.
Don Hahn
Yeah, the 500.
Caller
Yeah. What do you think will be bigger there? Maybe you guys should get in touch with somebody out there Friday. Ask him.
Don Hahn
It's interesting, but go ahead.
Caller
Yeah. One, two, Knicks. These are the two best, and nobody approaches them. Not yet. Number one is Frazier. Number two is debusscher. That's it. Everyone else, you can put in the jar and take one or another. Right now, Brunson is on his way up, obviously, but he's nowhere near Debusser.
Peter Rosenberg
And certainly Ewing was nowhere near debusser.
Caller
No, they didn't win anything until the Bush had came. They went to three championships, they won two. They went to three other conference finals. The Bush had made the Knicks. Are you kidding me?
Peter Rosenberg
I know, but they were nothing. The player, Richard, who you add, who kind of makes a team, it doesn't necessarily make him a better player.
Caller
Oh, he changed everything. He put the other guys in better positions. Bradley was a guard, he moved to forward. Reed was a forward, moved to the center, everything.
Peter Rosenberg
But I'm a better basketball player than Patrick.
Don Hahn
You had. No, but here's the thing, all right? Butch Goring getting traded to the Islanders changed everything. And they go on to win four straight Stanley Cups. Does that make Butch Goring better than Roger, who never won a Cup of the Rangers? Of course not.
Peter Rosenberg
Right?
Don Hahn
Of course not. The Busher was exactly what they needed to win those championships. Is he Patrick Ewing now, Brunson win Now, Brunson's a legitly, legit good player. Great player.
Peter Rosenberg
He could be all time.
Don Hahn
And if he wins the championship, I'm sorry, there's going to be a generation of Nick fans. They're going to believe that he surpasses everybody. Oh, yeah, but we were only halfway. Still, eight more games to get. We'll see if they can get it down to seven tonight. Pat o' Keefe is coming up next. He'll be all over it. And then, of course, Tyler and Monica with a play by play at eight o' clock. Let's do this again tomorrow at three, shall we? What kind of mood is everybody going to be tomorrow?
Peter Rosenberg
Let's do it.
Don Hahn
Let's find out.
